The Best New Cruise Ships

Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas will be the world's biggest new cruise ship.

Cruising is one of the fastest growing sectors of tourism, with passenger numbers projected to reach 37.2 million by 2025, according to Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA). Cruise lines are responding to this growth by building new (and often, larger) vessels with all the bells and whistles, including technological advancements that are more environmentally friendly and create the capability to use alternative fuels.

U.S. News has compiled this roundup of new cruise ships that have just set sail or are scheduled to launch later in 2023 and in 2024, plus a preview of new ships coming in 2025 and beyond. The list includes everything from expedition and luxury yacht-style vessels to reimagined ships and megaships – plus the debut of a brand-new cruise line.

This year will be a big one for new cruise ships, with three major vessels on the way that promise to break new ground in cruising.

The most notable of the three, Icon of the Seas , is the first of a new series of megaships from Royal Caribbean that will be larger than any cruise vessels ever built. It'll be loaded with all sorts of gee-whiz attractions, restaurants, bars and entertainment.

Icon of the Seas is just one of two major new Royal Caribbean cruise ships arriving in 2024. Also on the way is Utopia of the Seas , the sixth and final vessel in the line's hugely successful Oasis Class of ships.

The year will also bring the first new ship in more than a decade from storied cruise line Cunard (Queen Anne) and the first of a new class of ship from cruise giant Princess Cruises (Sun Princess).

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

The new ships from Cunard and Princess Cruises will both feature notable updated designs for the brands, with an expanded lineup of restaurants, bars and entertainment areas.

All three vessels — Icon of the Seas, Queen Anne and Sun Princess — are the three new cruise ships for 2024 that have us the most excited here at TPG. But they're far from being the only major new cruise vessels arriving during the next 12 months.

To whet your appetite for cruising in the year ahead, take a look at our list of nine new cruise ships arriving in 2024.

Carnival Jubilee

Maiden voyage: Dec. 23, 2023

newest cruise ships 2024

This newest ship for cruise giant Carnival technically arrived at the end of 2023, but its maiden voyage on Dec. 23 was so close to the start of 2024 that we're calling it a new vessel for 2024.

The 15-deck-high ship is a sister to the line's recently unveiled Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration , which have made waves in the past two years for their huge size and what might be the most unusual attraction ever on a cruise vessel: a deck-top roller coaster .

Like Carnival Celebration, Carnival Jubilee measures 183,521 tons, putting it in a tie with the former ship for the position of biggest vessel ever to sail for Carnival (at 181,808 tons, sister ship Mardi Gras is slightly smaller). Carnival Celebration and Mardi Gras, notably, are a whopping 35% bigger than the next-biggest Carnival ships currently afloat, and they are bigger than all but a dozen other cruise vessels in the world.

Like Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration, Carnival Jubilee has a roller coaster on its top deck. Dubbed Bolt: Ultimate Sea Coaster, it's similar to the roller coasters on its sister vessels, with an 800-foot-long track and vehicles that reach speeds of 40 mph — give or take.

Also, like its sisters, Carnival Jubilee was designed to hold up to 6,630 passengers. That's just a tad below the 7,600 passengers that will be able to fit aboard Royal Caribbean's soon-to-debut Icon of the Seas — the new world's largest cruise ship (more on that vessel below).

Related: The ultimate guide to Carnival Cruise Line

In addition to a roller coaster, Carnival Jubilee has a giant water park on its top deck. Like its sister, its interiors are filled with a far broader array of suites than you'd find on earlier Carnival ships. But the vessel isn't a carbon copy of the previous vessels. New features include two ocean-themed zones with new bar and dining options — including an underwater-themed bar adorned with octopus arms that will serve drinks.

The development of ships on the scale of Carnival Jubilee and its sisters has been a big deal for Carnival. Until recently, the line had resisted the trend among major brands to build even bigger vessels that offer a supersized megaresort-at-sea experience.

Carnival's last new vessel before the arrival of Mardi Gras in 2021, Carnival Panorama, didn't even crack the top 40 list of biggest ships when it debuted in 2019.

Carnival Jubilee is sailing seven-night voyages to the Western Caribbean out of Galveston. Fares start at $669 per person, not including taxes and fees.

Icon of the Seas

Maiden voyage: Jan. 27

newest cruise ships 2024

Call it the new grande dame of the megaship world. At 250,800 tons, Icon of the Seas will be the biggest cruise ship ever built, and it'll be chock-full of more amusements, restaurants, bars and entertainment venues than any cruise vessel ever.

In other words, if you're a megaship fan, this is your new go-to ship — assuming you don't mind vacationing with a lot of other people.

In size, Icon of the Seas will be about 6% bigger than the biggest of the Oasis Class ships, the one-year-old Wonder of the Seas. But it'll be able to hold about 7% more people — 7,600 passengers as compared to Wonder of the Seas' total capacity of 7,084 passengers. That's a new all-time record for a passenger ship.

The bigger passenger capacity is in part due to the ship's greater focus on family travelers. Icon of the Seas is being built with more cabins offering extra bunks to accommodate families with children. It'll also have more amenities geared to families, including a new-for-the-line outdoor "neighborhood" called Surfside dedicated to families with young children.

Related: Icon of the Seas will cater to families

Surfside notably will feature splash areas for babies and kids, pools and lounge spaces for parents, family-friendly eateries and shops, and a bar with "mommy and me" matching mocktails for kids and cocktails for grownups.

Icon of the Seas will also feature the largest water park ever built on a cruise ship, with a record six waterslides. No other vessel comes close when it comes to water attractions on a cruise ship.

Other notable new attractions will include the AquaDome — a massive, glass dome-covered area at the front of the ship. A true engineering marvel (the 363-ton glass dome had to be built separately next to the ship and winched into place), the AquaDome will be home to the AquaTheater — a venue found in a different location on Royal Caribbean's Oasis Class ships that hosts acrobatic and diving shows in a high-tech stage/pool.

The AquaTheater will be the marquee attraction within the AquaDome, which will also offer dining and drinking venues, as well as cozy seating areas for daytime and evening hangouts. One such spot, the Overlook, is an elevated lounge featuring special nooks (Overlook Pods) and wraparound windows providing fantastic ocean views and easy viewing of the aqua shows.

In addition, Icon of the Seas will have a record-for-a-ship seven pools, four of which will be at a main pool area called Chill Island. The latter area will be home to the line's first swim-up bar on a ship, Swim and Tonic.

Related: The ultimate Icon of the Seas guide: Pricing, itineraries, and what's on board

Ten new food outlets on the ship will include Surfside Eatery, a family-friendly buffet in the Surfside neighborhood, and Empire Supper Club, an upscale venue designed to evoke the atmosphere of New York City in the 1930s. The latter will serve an extravagant eight-course meal (think: caviar and wagyu), with each dish paired with a cocktail created by celebrity mixologist Tony Abou-Ganim.

Among lodging options, Icon of the Seas will boast 14 new cabin and suite types plus 14 categories of rooms that already exist on earlier Royal Caribbean ships. That's a whopping 28 types of accommodation in all.

Many of these cabin categories are family-friendly rooms that sleep four guests; some can accommodate six or eight guests. In total, 313 cabins and suites are listed specifically as family-focused accommodations, though many regular room types can sleep more than two people.

Note that Icon of the Seas is just the first of three sister ships Royal Caribbean has on order for delivery by 2026, all of similar dimensions. Together, they will make up what is known as the Icon Class.

Icon of the Seas will operate seven-night voyages to the Caribbean out of Miami. Fares start at $1,577 per person, not including taxes and fees.

Sun Princess

newest cruise ships 2024

Like Royal Caribbean, Princess Cruises is going bigger with its next new ship — a lot bigger.

Under development for more than six years and the first of an all-new series of vessels for the line, the 4,000-passenger Sun Princess is about 21% bigger than the biggest ships currently in the Princess fleet. And yet, while it's 21% bigger, it's designed to hold just 17% more passengers.

In other words, its space-to-passenger ratio will be greater, making the ship feel roomier — if only modestly.

Sun Princess will also be the first Princess ship with suites that come with exclusive access to a private restaurant, lounge and sun deck — a sign Princess is finally getting serious about pampering its best customers.

In addition, Sun Princess will boast an innovative new type of "cabana cabin" along the ship's extra-wide 10th deck, which will come with access to a private deck area (sort of a riff on the Havana-class cabins found on a handful of Carnival Cruise Line ships). Plus, the top deck of the ship is getting some unusual-for-Princess sizzle with the addition of a glass-dome-topped pool area that will transform into a nightspot after the sun goes down.

Related: A sneak peek inside Sun Princess under construction

Other notable differences between Sun Princess and earlier Princess ships include the lack of a buffet restaurant on its main pool deck. Don't worry, buffet lovers: There will still be a buffet-like venue on the ship. It will be eight decks below the pool deck, closer to the ship's central piazza and just off the ship's outside promenade.

The ship's main theater, to be called the Princess Arena, will also have a new look. Its new-for-Princess in-the-round shape can be converted into a more traditional proscenium-type theater or a keyhole-type theater to allow for different types of productions.

The ship's three-deck-high piazza, called the Sun Princess Piazza, is getting an upgrade, too, with a new circular shape, a stage that pops up from the center of the floor for performances and a giant, three-deck-high moveable LED screen that will play a role in evening productions in the space.

Among other standout venues, Sun Princess will feature a secret hideaway for magical performances designed in partnership with the Magic Castle performance venue in Los Angeles. Kids should love the new-for-Princess fun zone called Park19, featuring a ropes course and what's being billed as the first roll glider at sea, an electric ride that goes up to 11 mph.

Sun Princess initially will sail in Europe through the fall before repositioning to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, for voyages to the Caribbean. Fares start at $467 per person, not including taxes and fees, for a five-night Caribbean sailing.

newest cruise ships 2024

It's been a long time coming, but storied cruise line Cunard is finally launching a new ship. Built to an all-new design for the 183-year-old brand, the 3,000-passenger Queen Anne will be Cunard's first new vessel in 14 years — an unusually long period for any line to go without a new ship.

Queen Anne, notably, will embrace the latest trends of travel and cruising in a way that Cunard ships haven't done before, including a new focus on choice in dining and entertainment, wellness and onboard celebrations.

The ship will offer 15 different places to grab a bite, more than double the number on the line's other ships. The options will include Aji Wa, a new restaurant concept for Cunard that will serve Japanese cuisine influenced by the seasons of the year. Also new for Cunard will be Aranya, an Indian eatery; Sir Samuel's, a high-end steakhouse; and Tramonto, which will serve Mediterranean dishes.

Wellness-focused areas will include a new-for-the-line, glass-enclosed Wellness Studio at the top of the ship that will offer classes in yoga, pilates, Zumba and line dancing during the day and ballroom dancing classes at sunset.

A new juice bar and a cafe near the main pool will serve healthy dishes, and the ship's spa is being built as a temple to wellness. It'll offer a sprawling thermal pool complex that includes eight heated loungers, four experiential showers, a reflexology footpath with textured stones flowing with hot water, a cold room (a first for Cunard), a large steam room, a Himalayan salt sauna and a traditional sauna. A relaxation room and wellness suite will round out the offerings.

Related: A sneak peek inside Queen Anne under construction

On the celebrations front, Queen Anne will have a lounge specifically designed for weddings that spills into an indoor reception room and, just beyond, a new-for-the-line private rooftop terrace space for wedding and vow renewal receptions.

Other notable features of the ship will include an expanded Commodore Club observation lounge and a main pool area (The Pavilion) topped with a retractable glass roof designed to be as much a showpiece as a functional structure.

Not everything about Queen Anne will be different from previous Cunard ships. A lot will be familiar. As is always the case for Cunard vessels, Queen Anne will have a soaring Grand Lobby with a cascading staircase where you can take selfies in your formal night splendor. That staple of all Cunard ships, the ballroom known as the Queens Room, is also making a comeback.

Queen Anne initially will sail in Europe before setting off on an around-the-world cruise in January 2025. Fares start at $449 per person, not including taxes and fees, for a quick two-night cruise from Hamburg, Germany, to Southampton, England. Seven-night sailings in Europe start at $849 per person, not including taxes and fees.

newest cruise ships 2024

The newest ship for the luxury line Silversea Cruises is a sister to the brand's recently unveiled Silver Nova — a groundbreaking vessel that has been turning heads since it debuted in August.

Like Silver Nova, Silver Ray will be bigger than Silversea's previous ships and feature an unusual, asymmetrical design for its public decks that reorients its key features toward the sides of the ship instead of the center. Whether you're floating in the ship's main pool or dining at its open-air Marquee restaurant, you'll be looking out at the sea (or whatever destination the ship is visiting) like you've never been able to before.

Silver Ray's pool area, in particular, will be striking, as is the pool area on Silver Nova. The long and narrow pool won't be in the middle of the deck but offset to its starboard side, and it'll be oriented to face outward to the sea. Nearly all the lounge chairs around the pool will face in the same direction toward the sea, too.

Related: The 5 best destinations you can visit on a Silversea ship

As we wrote about in our recent first look at Silver Nova , part of what makes this new outward-facing orientation for these ships so magical is that they don't have any structures rising from the starboard sides of their pool decks. Passengers floating in the pools on these ships or lounging on nearby lounge chairs get an unobstructed view of the sea off the starboard side.

Silver Ray's asymmetrical design will also be evident at two food and beverage venues at the top of the vessel — both new-for-Silversea concepts that first debuted in August on Silver Nova.

The first, Marquee, will be an alfresco dining venue that is also off-center, with an orientation that offers commanding views of the sea from the ship's port side. It'll be home to The Grill, Silversea's signature outdoor "hot rocks" dining venue, and also double as the ship's Spaccanapoli pizza outlet. The second venue, The Dusk Bar, will be an open-air sky bar at the back of the vessel that, like Marquee, is positioned on the port side of the ship.

newest cruise ships 2024

Additional dining venues on board will include versions of Silversea's main signature restaurant La Terrazza, French eatery La Dame, seafood eatery Atlantide and sushi outlet Kaiseki.

In addition to asymmetry in many areas, one thing that will be particularly noticeable about Silver Ray is its spaciousness — something it will share with Silver Nova. At 54,700 tons, the two ships are about 34% bigger than Silversea's last three new vessels — Silver Muse, Silver Moon and Silver Dawn — but they are designed to hold only about 22% more passengers. That gives them significantly more space per passenger.

With every berth filled, Silver Ray will sail with 728 passengers — the same as Silver Nova and just 132 more than the three earlier Silversea vessels.

The extra space on the two vessels has allowed Silversea to expand its lineup of cabin categories, with more large suites. As is always the case with Silversea ships, every cabin on the ship will be a suite. But Silver Ray and Silver Nova offer new premium aft suites, including a massive 1,324-square-foot complex called the Otium Suite.

Even the smallest cabins on Silver Ray will measure at least 357 square feet, which is unusually large for a cruise ship cabin.

Silver Ray will initially sail in Europe before repositioning to North America in December 2024 for winter sailings to South America and the Caribbean. Fares start at $4,600 per person, including transfers, for a nine-night South America sailing out of Panama City.

Utopia of the Seas

Maiden voyage: July 22

newest cruise ships 2024

Royal Caribbean's second new ship of the year will be a giant, too, though not quite as big as Icon of the Seas. The sixth and final vessel in the line's groundbreaking Oasis Class of ships , Utopia of the Seas is expected to carry up to around 6,700 passengers and measure around 237,000 tons, which would place it just behind Icon of the Seas as the world's second-biggest cruise ship.

Like the five earlier Oasis Class ships (the newest of which, Wonder of the Seas , is the current size leader in the cruise world), Utopia of the Seas will be loaded with lots of family-focused attractions , including multiple main pool areas, a kiddie splash zone, surfing simulators, a miniature golf course, a basketball court and even a zip line. And that's just on its top deck.

Inside the vessel, you'll find more lounges, bars, restaurants and shops than you can imagine, plus a huge casino, spas and theaters with Broadway-style shows.

As with earlier Royal Caribbean ships, it'll even have an indoor ice-skating rink.

In design and features, Utopia of the Seas will be nearly identical to Royal Caribbean's last new Oasis Class ship, Wonder of the Seas, which debuted in 2022. Like that vessel, it'll have a dedicated suite area with a private lounge, restaurant and sun deck — something not found on the four earlier Oasis Class ships.

Utopia of the Seas will be based in Port Canaveral, Florida, for short three- and four-night sailings to the Bahamas. Fares start at $431 per person, not including taxes and fees, for a three-night sailing.

newest cruise ships 2024

The world's newest cruise line, three-month-old Explora Journeys, is doubling in size in 2024 with the addition of Explora 2.

Designed for 922 passengers, the high-end vessel will be an almost identical sister to Explora 1, the line's first ship, which debuted in August. It will similarly target the luxury market.

Like Explora 1, the new ship will offer oceanfront suites, penthouses and residences designed to be "homes at sea," and it'll be packed with upscale amenities. They will include 10 distinct culinary experiences, 10 indoor and outdoor bars and lounges, four swimming pools, outdoor deck areas with private cabanas, wellness facilities and entertainment.

A creation of the deep-pocketed MSC Group, which already owns MSC Cruises, Explora Journeys plans to launch at least six of the superluxurious vessels by 2028, with the first four being roughly the same size and the last two being even bigger .

In just a few years, that'll give Explora Journeys a bigger capacity than such well-known luxury cruise operators as Seabourn and the recently relaunched Crystal .

Explora Journeys is competing in the same upscale cruise space as Seabourn and Crystal, as well as luxury lines like Viking, Silversea and The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection. It's run completely separately from its sister brand, MSC Cruises, which caters to a mass-market audience.

Explora 2 will initially sail in the Mediterranean before repositioning to North America for the winter. Fares start at $4,275 per person, not including taxes and fees, for a seven-night Caribbean sailing.

Viking Vela

Maiden voyage: Dec. 19

newest cruise ships 2024

Fast-growing Viking will continue its expansion into ocean cruising in 2024 with its 11th new seagoing vessel since 2015.

Like Viking's first 10 ocean ships (one of which has been transferred to a joint venture with a Chinese company), Vela will be a relatively small, elegant vessel designed to appeal to an older crowd looking to explore the world in style and comfort.

Slightly bigger than its sister ships, Viking Vela will hold 998 passengers at double occupancy — 68 more than its siblings. But it'll still be less than a third the size of the giant ships operated by such well-known cruise brands as Royal Caribbean, MSC Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Line.

Like Viking's other ocean ships, it'll sail itineraries that feature more time in ports than is common at many other lines. Like the earlier Viking ships, it'll also be adults-only, with no passengers under the age of 18 allowed.

While slightly bigger than earlier Viking ocean ships, Viking Vela's interior will have an almost identical look. Like Viking's 10 earlier ocean vessels, Vela will boast modern, Scandinavian-influenced decor that's soothing and upscale. Onboard activities will revolve around enrichment programs and classy entertainment, and there will be elegant meals in multiple restaurants. Cabins will be relatively spacious, with the smallest of five cabin categories having 270 square feet of space. Every cabin will have a balcony.

As is typical for Viking, the fare will include a shore excursion at every port that Vela visits. Also included will be Wi-Fi, and wine and beer with lunch and dinner — all part of Viking's "no-nickel-and-diming" philosophy.

Disney Treasure

Maiden voyage: Dec. 21

newest cruise ships 2024

Disney Cruise Line is shifting into growth mode again with the unveiling of Disney Treasure , its second new ship in two years (after a 10-year period where Disney didn't unveil a single vessel). Due at the end of 2024, it's coming out in relatively quick succession to Disney Wish, a similarly designed ship that arrived in 2022.

Like Disney Wish, Disney Treasure is part of Disney's new Triton Class of vessels, and it'll share many of the same features and layout as its older sister. But it will be far from an exact copy. Disney has announced quite a few major changes for Disney Treasure, including the addition of an all-new Mexican restaurant called Plaza de Coco that is themed around the events of the "Coco" movie. It replaces the "Frozen-" themed eatery on Disney Wish.

Also, a new Haunted Mansion-themed bar will replace the "Star Wars-" themed Hyperspace Lounge on Disney Wish.

Other new venues include Jumbeaux's Sweets, an ice cream parlor and candy shop inspired by Jumbeaux's Cafe in the movie "Zootopia," and Skipper Society, a new bar inspired by Disney's Jungle Cruise ride and its wisecracking skippers. At the latter, which will be where The Bayou is on Disney Wish, passengers will find a menu of themed cocktails and light snacks, such as waffles.

Yet another new drinks venue is Periscope Pub, inspired by Jules Verne's "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" (and Disney's 1954 movie version of the book and theme park attraction). It will replace Wish's Keg & Compass as Disney Treasure's sports bar. The bar is designed to look like the Nautilus submarine from the story, complete with a giant periscope, porthole windows and a ceiling designed to look like you're underwater.

Disney is also launching a new Broadway-style musical on Disney Treasure, "Disney The Tale of Moana." The show will feature popular songs and characters from the animated movie and marks the first time Disney has brought the story of Moana to the stage.

The ship's two other main shows, "Beauty and the Beast" and "Disney Seas the Adventure," are repeats from earlier Disney ships.

Like Disney Wish, Disney Treasure's big top-deck attraction will be AquaMouse, a water ride that swirls around the top of the vessel.

The ship will hold 2,500 passengers at double occupancy (two passengers per cabin) and up to 4,000 passengers with every berth filled.

Disney Treasure will sail seven-night voyages to the Caribbean and the Bahamas out of Port Canaveral. Fares start at $1,862 per person, not including taxes and fees.

Other new ships

In addition to the above, newcomers for 2024 include several small oceangoing cruise vessels from such small-ship cruise operators as The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection and American Cruise Lines , as well as small river ships from river lines AmaWaterways , Avalon Waterways and Viking .

Among the most notable of these smaller vessels is the 60-passenger AmaMagdalena, which is being billed as the first major river ship designed to sail on the Magdalena River in Colombia. Avalon's new entry for 2024, the 102-passenger Avalon Alegria, will be that line's first vessel on the Douro River in Portugal.

These are the Best New Cruise Ships Coming in 2024

newest cruise ships 2024

The cruise industry continues to grow, and 2024 will be no exception. The latest round of new cruise ships include much-anticipated first-in-class vessels for Royal Caribbean and Princess , as well as the first cruise ship from Cunard in over a decade. Families will cheer a brand-new Disney cruise ship.

For luxury lovers, Silversea and Explora Journeys will release siblings to ships that came in 2023. Ritz Carlton and Viking have new ships coming, each with their own tweaks from the original blueprints they used for previous ships.

Within river crusing, AmaWaterways is expanding not only the number of its ships, but adding a brand-new destination. Avalon is adding a new ship on Portugal's Douro River.

Here's what we're looking forward to from the best cruise ships of 2024.

Thrill Island Royal Caribbean Icon of the Seas

Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas Will Be a Game-Changer

The hype for Royal Caribbean's newest ship, Icon of the Seas , has been building for a long time with record-breaking sales -- and in January 2024, the latest class from the line will debut. The 7,600-passenger vessel promises to be a showstopper, especially the new glass-covered AquaDome. This 82-feet-by-164-feet space will feature 600 panes of glass and contain a signature AquaTheater, as well as restaurants and Royal's first food hall, the AquaDome Market.

While adrenaline junkies are setting their sights on Thrill Island, with the Category 6 waterpark full of slides and an over-the-water obstacle course, we're more excited about Icon's newest laid-back neighborhood. Chill Island boasts four of the ship's seven pools, including Swim & Tonic, Royal's first swim-up bar at sea, and the Cove Pool, which has an infinity edge to the ocean. We're also looking forward to The Hideaway -- cruising's first suspended infinity pool rising 135 feet above the ocean.

Sun Princess Ushers in a Whole New Class for Princess Cruises

Princess Cruises is also debuting something completely different in the 4,000-passenger Sun Princess , the first of the line's Sphere-class ships, slated for February 2024. Families in particular should look forward to a slew of new features for young ones and teens in an area called Park19. The ship is debuting the first rollglider at sea, Sea Breeze -- an electric ride that goes up to 11 mph. The area will also have a ropes course and Coastal Climb, an obstacle-course-meets-ladder adventure spanning two decks.

Those who enjoy the suite life will want to check out two new types of suites: the Signature Collection and the Reserve Collection. These new suite categories come with their own perks. The Signature Collection suites have their own restaurant, lounge and sun deck. The Reserve Collection suites include the former Club Class cabins that are on existing Princess ships, as well as new Cabana cabins that have access to a private sundeck and whirlpool, as well as a Reserve Collection restaurant.

Grand Suite on Cunard's Queen Anne

Queen Anne Will Be Cunard's First New Cruise Ship in 12 Years

Cunarders love tradition, but they have also been waiting a long time for a new ship from the grande dame line. The 12-year drought ends in May 2024, with the introduction of the 3,000-passenger Queen Anne.

What's exciting about Queen Anne is how much the line is shaking things up on the culinary front. The line has partnered with two-Michelin-starred chef Michel Roux to develop a new menu for the ship's Queens Grill, as well as the Golden Lion pub. The ship will also have a new restaurant with outdoor dining, Tramonto, with a Mediterranean-inspired menu.

While the Golden Lion and Tramonto are included restaurants, Queen Anne will have three new specialty restaurants: Aji Wa, a Japanese restaurant with sushi and an omakase tasting menu; Aranya, a new Indian restaurant; and Sir Samuels, a high-end steakhouse.

Utopia of the Seas is the Next Huge Oasis-Class Ship From Royal Caribbean

Icon of the Seas isn't the only headline-grabber for Royal Caribbean in 2024. The 6,700-passenger Utopia of the Seas follows the line's crowd-pleasing Oasis-class layout in July with the signature Central Park and Boardwalk neighborhoods, as well as the Ultimate Abyss slide.

That's not to say that Utopia will be a carbon copy of its sister ships. A new immersive restaurant, centered around the concept of being on a train, is being developed. What's also unique for the ship is that it will focus on short three- and four-day itineraries from its Port Canaveral homeport -- meaning you'll never be able to see it all in one trip.

Disney Treasure Will Have an Aladdin Theme and Center Around Adventure

A sister ship to Disney Wish , the 4,000-passenger Disney Treasure puts Aladdin in the spotlight, along with a theme of adventure. New venues onboard the ship include an interactive dining experience called Plaza de Coco, based on the movie "Coco;" Jumbeaux's Sweet Shop which takes its inspiration from "Zootopia" and adults-only lounges that are based on Disney theme park attractions.

Kids will delight in the AquaMouse slide, which has a new MIckey and Minnie-themed adventure story as well as two casual cafes named for the princesses Moana and Mulan.

Disney Treasure's inaugural cruise will be December 21, 2024.

Silver Ray Continues Luxury Line Silversea's Innovation

The second of Silversea's Nova-class ships, the 728-passenger Silver Ray will mimic its sister Silver Nova with an asymmetrical design that puts more focus on the ocean. The star on these ships is the revamped pool deck, which puts sea views front and central. While many of Silversea's favorite restaurants are onboard Silver Ray, what's most exciting in this class of ship is the relocated S.A.L.T. Lab, where the culinary adventurous can spring for a 14-course tasting menu.

Another standout on this class: the Otium spa and new Otium suites at the back of the ship. All cabins come with butler service, a Silversea trademark, and one that makes you feel truly indulged. Silver Ray debuts in July 2024.

Explora II aft view (rendering)

Explora II Will Be the Second Luxury Ship From Newcomer Explora Journeys

Following a successful launch in 2023, Explora Journeys will launch its second luxury ship, the 922-passenger Explora II, in August 2024. Expect the same features that have wowed guests so far, including a stunning lobby bar; gorgeous pools and an array of dining options that include an unlimited raw bar in the ship's Emporium Marketplace.

Built by the MSC Group as its luxury offering (making it a sister to MSC Cruises ), Explora Journeys aims to bring the upscale vibe off the ship too. Excursions are called "experiences," and from what we've seen so far, they do have offerings that go beyond the same old, same old. Another nice touch: Families are welcome on Explora II, a rare outreach on a luxury cruise line.

Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection Expands with Second Ship Ilma

The luxury hotel brand Ritz-Carlton made waves in 2022 when it launched its first cruise ship, Evrima . The next ship in its fleet, Ilma , aims to do more of the same -- on a bigger scale. The 456-passenger ship is significantly larger than Evrima, which only held 298 guests.

What won't change on Ilma is the luxury-minded crew-to-passenger ratio. Also expect the same yacht atmosphere, along with fine dining options and an expanded marina area. Ritz Carlton Yacht Collection is another line that welcomes families, although the Ritz Kids program does come with a fee.

Viking Vela Will Mark a (Slight) Change in the Viking Ocean Fleet

Viking's ocean ships have been reliably similar since the company started launching them in 2015. Viking Vela will break that mold when it arrives, as it will be slightly larger and carry 998 passengers. The extra space is being dedicated to an additional 17 cabins -- all rooms on Viking's ocean ships have views -- as well as storage space for additional technical equipment.

Size aside, don't expect too much of Viking's award-winning formula to change. The Scandinavian design ethic will be present, along with fantastic restaurants and a thermal spa that are all included in the fare.

American Cruise Lines' rendering for American Glory and American Eagle (Photo/American Cruise Lines)

American Cruise Lines Will Add Two Coastal Catamarans to Its Ever-Growing Fleet

American Cruise Lines introduced a new type of vessel to its fleet in 2023 -- 100-passenger coastal catamarans designed to travel the U.S. Two more of these small ships will debut in 2024: American Liberty and American Legend . Eventually the line plans to have 12 of these unique ships.

The itineraries really set these ships apart, as they are able to not only sail on some of America's rivers, they will visit islands off the U.S. coast such as Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard and the Florida Keys and places such as Chesapeake Bay.

AmaWaterways Will Bring a Vessel to Colombia's Magdalena River, Add In Egypt

Just when you thought there was nothing new in river cruising, AmaWaterways is shaking things up by not only building new ships, but developing itineraries in an entirely new country and river. The Magdalena River in Colombia will play host to a new river ship in November 2024: the 60-passenger AmaMagdalena .

AmaWaterways is also expanding its presence on the Nile River i n Egypt. The 82-passenger AmaLilia will join AmaDahlia to offer itineraries that begin with a pre-cruise stay in Cairo before joining the ship in Luxor for a roundtrip sail.

Avalon Adds a New Ship in Portugal

Avalon is bringing its style of river cruise ship to Portugal's Douro River in 2024, with the 102-passenger Avalon Alegria . The ship will have Avalon's signature Panorama Suites, where the bed faces the river.

Another staple of Avalon: excursions that are fall into different categories of Classic, Discovery and Active. Among some of the tours that have been revealed: a guided bike ride along the quaysides of the Douro in Porto, food and wine tastings, learning to bake traditional Portuguese pastries and a visit to one of the Douro Valley’s oldest farms with a stop to sample local foods.

The line is also planning a hands-on craft class where passengers can join a professional painter to create one of the traditional blue and white azulejos tiles seen throughout Portugal.

This vessel is the fourth ship in Celebrity’s popular Edge Class design. It features Edge Class’s unique Infinite Balcony with its indoor/outdoor sliding window.

With 3,260 passengers, 2,331 staterooms, 14 restaurants and eateries, and (for a $9.95 fee), there’s a dining option for everyone. Le Voyage, the first restaurant at sea by renowned chef Daniel Boulud, serves Mediterranean cuisine and a plant-based tasting menu.

Celebrity Ascent is currently cruising from Port Everglades until April 2024, when the ship will head to Europe in the summer and fall.

Cunard Line

The Best New Cruise Ships and Itineraries for 2024

By Scott Laird

A diverse crop of new ships will set sail in 2024 , including intimate yacht-style vessels to never-before-seen mega ships from luxury players like Silversea and Cunard. There will be plenty of bells and whistles expected of these brands, including restaurants from top chefs, but also a few features new to the industry (think glass domes on the hull). Some are sister ships to those already on the waters, but with enough points of difference to feel like something entirely new—including the soon-to-be-sailing largest ship in the world, from Royal Caribbean , of course.

Ships aside, cruises will be taking us deeper into places only lightly touched by international travel next year, too. Australia’s Kimberley region, one of Conde Nast Traveler's Best Places to Go in 2024 , is the focus for new expedition sailings from Seabourn, while Lindblad ships will hit up the little-traveled equatorial islands of the Mid-Atlantic on a crossing from Brazil to the Azores .

Cruise line: Cunard

Cunard’s new ship Queen Anne , launching in May, will be the line’s 249 th ship since 1840. Queen Anne will be helmed by Captain Inger Klein Thorhauge, Cunard’s first woman captain, who has spent time in command of Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth. The ship will have double the number of Britannia Club staterooms than the other ships in the fleet, and new renditions of the Cunard favorites—sumptuous restaurants with Art Deco styling, reimagined wellness facilities, and refreshed, classically modern palettes in stateroom design. She will sail mostly in Europe , including around the British Isles as well as through the fjords of Norway .

A new Mexican restaurant, Plaza de Coco, inspired by the movie “Coco” will be exclusive to the ship, and two bars themed for Disney Parks attractions: the Jungle Cruise-themed Skipper Society, and Periscope Pub—a nod to “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.” A new production show “Disney: The Tale of Moana” will also debut with the ship.

Cruise line: Silversea

Set to launch in the Mediterranean in Summer 2024, Silver Ray is the second Nova Class ship for Silversea, and is being billed as one of the most eco-friendly luxury ships to enter the market with fuel cell and shore power technology that will allow it to be emission-free while in port. Onboard, public spaces and guest suites are designed to make optimal use of natural light, while guests will have eight dining options to choose from, ranging from a casual grill and pizzeria to La Dame, a French fine-dining restaurant.

Sun Princess

Cruise line: Princess Cruises

Princess launches the new Sphere Class with Sun Princess —the line’s largest ship yet. Princess will introduce a new class of suites called—The Reserve Collection, which will eventually replace Princess Club throughout the fleet. There’s also a new stateroom category: Cabana cabins, which have a convertible space between the veranda and the cabin that can be used as an outdoor cabana or enclosed to create extra cabin space. The ship’s three-story Piazza will be enclosed in a glass sphere in the center of the ship, giving the space an airy feel with omnidirectional natural light. The ship’s first sailings are slated for the Mediterranean in February 2024.

The 6 Best New Cruise Ships for 2024

Are you someone who loves that “new cruise ship” smell? Ok, that’s not really a thing, but it absolutely is something that cruise lines continue to roll out the biggest, wildest, and most amazing new ships you’ve ever seen.

The cruise industry knows that it is in a constant battle to capture the imagination of the potential customers. The best way to do that is to come out with new ships that push the envelope of what’s possible at sea. Every iteration takes what passengers love about a cruise line and makes it even better.

And with so many lines introducing new ships, that also means you have the ability to find a ship that offers what you’re looking for. Whether you’re the type that wants an entire waterpark on your cruise ship (yes, that’s coming in 2024) or you want an ultra-luxury ship unlike anything else at sea, then the coming year has new options you’ll want to know about.

With that in mind, here are the best new cruise ships for the coming year that you need to know about.

Utopia of the Seas

Utopia of the Seas floating out.

Debuting in July 2024 , Utopia of the Seas is a big deal… literally. The ship is the sixth Oasis-class vessel to join Royal Caribbean. This class of ship is currently the cruise line’s largest (though it will soon be eclipsed by the all-new Icon class), and set the bar in how much you can do on a modern ship.

Utopia of the Sea will offer a massive 237,000 gross tons (making it the second largest cruise ship in the world when it arrives) and hold nearly 5,700 guests at double occupancy across its nearly 3,000 staterooms. But what’s impressive is not the size, but what you can do on a ship this large.

There will be eight different neighborhoods, three waterslides, five pools, and more than 20 places to eat. Adults will love the Solarium, a popular spot that features an indoor pool and hot tubs along with a glass roof to allow sun in while keeping things warm. Central Park will also be featured, offering a spot to enjoy lush greenery even while in the middle of the ocean. Nearly two dozen bars are also offered.

In short, if you get bored on a ship like this, then that’s your fault — especially given that you’re only going to be aboard a few days.

Typically cruise lines debut their newest ships on week-long cruises. But Royal Caribbean is instead porting Utopia in Port Canaveral and will sail 3-4 day cruises featuring the cruise line’s private island, CocoCay . They are calling it “The World’s Biggest Weekend,” and the nice thing is it means you can sail a completely new ship for relatively little. Cruises start under $500 per person.

Carnival Jubilee

Carnival Jubilee

Royal Caribbean isn’t the only line going big. Technically debuting in December 2023 , Carnival Jubilee is the third ship in Carnival’s Excel class that includes Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration.

This class of ship set a new bar in cruising for Carnival fans, and Jubilee will keep that streak alive. At 180,000 gross tons, the ship (and sister ships) are the largest in the Carnival fleet, but also offer the most to see and do.

Perhaps the most eye-catching feature is the BOLT roller coaster over the back of the ship, which has become a signature of this class. But when it comes to Carnival — a cruise line known for having lots of fun things to do onboard — Jubilee offers much more than other ships in the fleet. From multiple pools to “The Ultimate Playground” with waterslides, sport court, and mini golf, to a comedy club and casino, there are a lot of favorites packed onboard.

What we think helps the ship stand out, however, are the food options. It’s nothing special for a huge ship to have dozens of options. But Carnival offers an amazing amount of free options including Big Chicken, Chibang!, Street Eats, and Cucina Del Capitano. There are paid specialty restaurants also offered, but it’s hard to beat the included lineup.

Sun Princess

Sun Princess

A part of a completely new class of ships for Princess, Sun Princess is unlike anything else in the brand. When the ship debuts in February 2024 , it will mark the largest in the fleet at 175,000 gross tons (roughly the size of Carnival Jubilee).

As you might expect with Princess, this ship isn’t making heads turn due to wild waterslides or roller coasters. Instead, the ship’s architecture, design, and luxury are what’s impressive. One signature of Sun Princess is The Dome. It’s a glass-covered multi-deck venue that’s a pool area during the day, but at night is planned for performances that feature acrobatics.

Then there is The Piazza, another “wow” spot on board. This serves as the center atrium for the ship, with glass panels circling and offering a sphere-encased spot where you can lounge, eat, and take in gorgeous views across both sides of the ship.

Even the theater has been reinvented, with the Princess Arena. It can transform seating arrangements to fit different shows, including circular seating with a stage in the middle — unlike other ships at sea.

Then there are all the other perks and highlights. A massive center pool area, a glass-covered Sea-View Terrace with lots of sun and sweeping views, and even a two-story spa.

Celebrity Ascent

newest cruise ships 2024

If you’re the type that wants a little more luxury and elbow room, then Celebrity Ascent will definitely pique your interest when it arrives in November 2023 . The ship is the fourth in the line’s Edge class (being similar to Celebrity Edge, Apex, and Beyond), which is famous for its cantilevered Magic Carpet area that hangs over the side of the ship, moving up and down from near the water to 13 stories up.

But there’s much more to the ship than just the bright orange platform that’s instantly recognizable. For one, Edge-class ships feature some of the highest space ratios of any cruise ship, meaning there are fewer passengers per gross ton.

Veranda rooms (a fancy term for balcony cabins) run up to 228 square feet plus the balcony. Typically room sizes are around 180 square feet on most lines. In other words, you should have plenty of elbow room to enjoy the ship.

And enjoy you will. Celebrity is known for a higher-end atmosphere that’s more focused on luxury. Spots like the Rooftop Garden where you can relax and take in the views figure prominently on Ascent. Eden also makes an appearance, the three-deck lounge and bar spot that features massive windows to bring in ocean views.

Of course, Ascent will also have a focus on food. There are more than a dozen cafes, bars, and lounges, eight specialty restaurants, four main dining rooms and four included restaurants. And with menus featuring high-end dishes like Nova Scotia lobster casserole and prime rib, it will be hard to not have memorable meals on the ship.

Seven Seas Grandeur

Dining room on Seven Seas Grandeur

Technically this ship makes its debut in November 2023 , but its first full year of sailing will be in 2024. For those who care more about luxury and the onboard experience instead of huge mega ships, this is the ship you want to pay attention to.

Regent Seven Seas is known for being a high-end cruise line. Its latest iteration with Seven Seas Grandeur is pushing the bar even higher.

First, there is the space. The ship is relatively small — just 55,500 gross tons and carrying 746 passengers. That provides a “space ratio” of 74.4 gross tons per passenger, or roughly double what you find on most mega ships.

Every cabin on the ship is a suite with its own balcony, and the smallest size available is 307 square feet. That’s about 70% larger than a typical balcony cabin on a mass market ship.

Across the ship, it’s all about luxury and sophistication. From high-end restaurants (think French cuisine in one restaurant or the ability to design your own meal in another) to bocce ball courts, this is not meant for travelers looking for a cheap cruise. It’s meant to be a one-of-a-kind experience.

If you want the best of everything, opt for the Regent Suite, a 3,150 square foot suite (with 1,300 square foot balcony) with its own in-suite spa, a mini pool, and three walk-in closets. Just be prepared to open your pocketbook. We saw prices of nearly $85,000 per person for some two-week cruises for this cabin.

Icon of the Seas

newest cruise ships 2024

We’d argue that no ship is as anticipated in cruising (not just for 2024 but in history) than Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas. So what’s the buzz all about? Anytime there’s a new largest cruise ship in the world, there’s reason for interest. When it arrives in January 2024 , the ship will be the first to top the 250,000 gross ton mark. All told, Icon will be nearly 1,200 feet long and have the ability to carry 7,600 passengers at max capacity.

But it’s not just the size of Icon that’s so compelling. It’s the fact that the ship looks like nothing else at sea and features things never before seen on a cruise ship.

Let’s start with the full-fledged waterpark at the back of the ship. Category 6 will feature six different slides ranging from extreme drop slides to family raft slides. At the front you’ll find the Aquadome, complete with indoor area that features a waterfall and stage for the water-focused theater and lounge seating with wraparound views.

Eight neighborhoods are aboard Icon of the Seas, so there will be a spot for you to enjoy no matter what you’re looking for. This includes the all-new Surfside area that’s specifically built for those with smaller kids, including pool, splash area, and restaurants for families.

In total, you’ll find seven pools (including Royal Caribbean’s first pool with swim-up bar), 22 different eateries, the popular Central Park, ice-skating rink, and more. Put simply, if it’s possible, it’s on Icon of the Seas.

USA TODAY 10Best

The best new cruise ships coming in 2024 from Royal Caribbean, Viking, and more

Jason Leppert

December 7, 2023 // By Jason Leppert

By Jason Leppert December 7, 2023

Royal Caribbean International's latest Icon of the Seas seen during sea trials

The old adage of “size matters” does actually apply to cruise ships, especially in 2024. Large cruise ships are getting even larger and packed with amenities. But, perhaps surprisingly, this new fleet is also getting more intimate.

Here are nine new cruise ships to look for on the horizon, from smallest to biggest — that is volumetrically, according to available public space measured in gross tons. (It’s all very technical.)

Ilma - The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection

Rendering of Ilma's Main Pool

The smallest on the list of new cruise ships for 2024 launches in the fall. The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection’s Ilma clocks in at 46,750 tons and has a double occupancy capacity of 448 passengers in 224 suites. Travelers can enjoy five restaurants, six bars, a watersports marina, top-notch service, and more premium amenities befitting the decadent brand and its luxury-loving clientele.

Viking Vela - Viking

The Explorers' Lounge on Viking's beautiful ocean ships

The Viking brand was once solely synonymous with river cruising, but after introducing 10 ocean ships, plus two dedicated expedition ones, it’s now known as an upscale player in the seagoing market.

The adult-only Viking Vela will be a pinch larger than other Viking ships to accommodate its environmentally friendlier, fuel cell-powered propulsion system. But its signature “exploring the world in comfort” appointments, catering to 998 guests, are expected to be the same. Expect Vela excursions to Iceland, around the Mediterranean to Morocco, and more.

Silver Ray - Silversea

The engaging S.A.L.T. culinary experience

Following the debut of its latest Silver Nova, Silversea will unveil the equally luxurious sister ship Silver Ray in June 2024. Measuring in at 54,700 tons and a double guest capacity of 728, those doing the math might notice that as overall ship volume increases, the passenger count doesn't necessarily rise proportionately. (This is known as passenger space ratio.)

In Ray’s case, there is more fine dining and activity and entertainment space to go around per guest. The Marquee is sublime for open-air meals. Also, don’t miss Silversea’s magnificent trio of destination-inspired S.A.L.T. (sea and last taste) dining venues.

Explora II - Explora Journeys

Sister ship Explora I, the inspiration for Explora II

Showing again how the passenger space ratio curves can deviate, Explora II from the fresh-faced Explora Journeys (luxury spinoff of MSC Cruises) will carry 922 guests across its 63,900 tons.

As an identical sister ship to the first Explora I, the second in line will again, in the summer, offer exceptional Michelin-level cuisine and a half dozen dining venues for travelers. Private suite accommodations will range in size from 377 to 3,014 square feet.

Queen Anne - Cunard

Rendering of Bright Lights Society on Queen Anne

Jumping up quite a bit in scale to a comparatively median-sized vessel is Cunard’s 113,000-ton, 3,000-guest Queen Anne , the first new ship from the historic company in over a decade.

Launching in May 2024, the Queen Anne will reprise ocean-liner loyalist favorites, like the Golden Lion pub for classic fish and chips and pints of Guinness. New additions include the Bright Lights Society cabaret lounge, named after the fact that Cunard was the first to use electric illumination onboard.

Disney Treasure - Disney Cruise Line

Rendering of Haunted Mansion Parlor

The family-friendly Disney Cruise Line follows up its recent Disney Wish with the upcoming Disney Treasure , which is expected to launch in December 2024. The 144,000-ton vessel can carry 2,492 guests at double occupancy, or up to 4,000 passengers max.

Switching themes from Wish’s “enchantment” to Treasure’s “adventure” will be Disney theme park-inspired venues like the Haunted Mansion Parlor, Jungle Cruise-based Skipper Society, and the Periscope Pub, which will be adorned like “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.”

Sun Princess - Princess Cruises

Rendering of Spellbound Parlor Bar on Sun Princess

Another favorite among multi-generational families and couples alike is Princess Cruises, which will launch its largest-ever ship, the Sun Princess , in February 2024. Its specifications will be a tonnage of 175,500 and a double guest capacity of 4,300.

Headlining the vessel will be The Dome, taking inspiration from Santorini, Greece, for an indoor-outdoor pool experience by day, then switching to high-energy acrobatic shows by night. The Sea Breeze Rollglider lets guests soar like a bird 19 decks above the waves. And for magic lovers, the mysterious speakeasy-like Spellbound offers shows curated by Hollywood’s famed Magic Castle.

Utopia of the Seas - Royal Caribbean International

Never to be outdone in the “largest cruise ship in the world” category, Royal Caribbean International will be taking delivery of two new vessels in 2024, which will again take the title of biggest cruise ship, as well as second biggest cruise ship, respectively.

As the sixth in the Oasis-class series, Utopia of the Seas will launch in July 2024 and hold 5,668 guests (double occupancy). The ship’s Caribbean-inspired Pesky Parrot bar along the Royal Promenade, plus a food truck around the pool, are new highlights.

The ultimate guide to new cruise ships in 2024

Have you ever sailed on a brand-new cruise ship? There's a certain something about the experience — inaugural sailings are filled with a buzz of excitement, but even when ships have sailed once or twice before — they're absolutely spotless. The sheets are extra crisp having not being washed before and your filet mignon is impeccable, cooked on a spotless grill. Everything just... works. There's an extra feeling of luxury knowing you're one of the first one a ship, like the whole vessel was built for you and your sailing party.

With that in mind, we've put together this list of brand-new cruise ships for 2024 with the month that they're  expected  to launch.

It's set to be an exciting time in the cruise industry, with several new ships in the pipeline, including the biggest cruise ship in the world in January, a brand-new Cunard classic in May, a brand-new river ship sailing on a river that has not yet been cruised from AmaWaterways and more!

Icon of the Seas, Royal Caribbean International

Complete with eight neighbourhoods, seven swimming pools, six waterslides and a total of 20 decks, Icon of the Seas has a capacity of 7,600 guests. There’s no two ways about it, this new cruise ship is absolutely enormous — the most enormous in the world, in fact. Launching January 2024, Icon features future-iconic Royal Caribbean details such as the huge Aquadome theatre, the first family neighbourhood at sea, the largest waterpark at sea (the tallest drop slides and the first family raft slides at sea too), an ice rink and an assortment of dining experiences — featuring over 40 dining venues in fact! Add to that list a minigolf course, basketball court, rock climbing and a thrilling skywalk (154 feet above the ocean below) too — it just goes on and on.

If you want to enjoy big ship amenities but in the luxury, intimacy and world-class service of a small ship, give us a ring to talk about Big Ship Suites !

AmaLilia, AmaWaterways

AmaLilia is due to set sail in February along Egypt’s River Nile, and is smothered in AmaWaterways’ signature ultra-luxury. Decorated according to a regionally-inspired palette, this upscale ship features 41 staterooms, including 13 show-stopping suites; a Main Restaurant serving western fare with a local twist, a Chef’s Table dining experience, an onboard salon to treat yourself to a massage, manicure or pedicure as well as multiple public spaces where you’ll indulge your mind through the services of an expert Egyptologist talking you through the incredible destination around you. As with any river ship, the sun deck is a quintessential public area — new cruise ship, AmaLilia’s, is the perfect space to enjoy the natural beauty that surrounds you.

Avalon Alegria, Avalon Waterways

Find Avalon Alegria sauntering up and down Portugal’s Douro River from February onwards. The ship is the newest addition to their Suite Ships class and offers capacity for 102 passengers in 14 deluxe staterooms and 37 Panorama Suites, wall-to-wall panoramic windows and open-air balconies in those suites, a state-of-the-art fitness centre, an adventure centre with complimentary activity gear, Starlink WiFi access and so many more amenities. Coveted dining options include the casual Panorama Bistro, the al fresco Sky Grill and the elegant glass-walled main dining room. There are three public spaces on board this new cruise ship — the Sky Deck with swimming pool, the Club Lounge and the Observation Lounge.

Queen Anne, Cunard

Queen Anne is set to be the 249th (two-hundred and forty-ninth!) and largest ship in Cunard’s resplendent fleet, both past and present. The cruise line’s first new build in over 12 years, Queen Anne, will accommodate up to 3,000 guests. On board this new cruise ship you’ll find old classics, like the Golden Lion pub and the iconic Queens Room Ballroom, but you’ll also find brand-new offerings, such as the Bright Lights Society venue and a new-and-improved The Pavilion with a retractable glass roof and a wellness studio. By way of dining options, Cunard Queen Anne will feature Aranya serving spicy Indian food, Tramonto where you’ll be whisked away to the Mediterranean, Aji Wa for modern Japanese cuisine and of course the Princess Grill, exclusive to Princess Grill Suite guests.

Silver Ray, Silversea

Silversea are churning out new cruise ships. It’s fair enough really — following the rave reviews of their new ship Silver Nova in 2023, this ultra-luxurious cruise line is set to launch her sister ship in 2024. Ray will mirror Nova with an asymmetrical architecture and downright gorgeous contemporary design. We loved it, you loved it — everybody loved it.

Just ask Gary Buchanan, Telegraph Cruise Writer who went on board and loved it so much that he wrote a Silver Nova review  for us last year.

Utopia of the Seas, Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean new cruise ship, Utopia of the Seas, will set sail as the second largest cruise ship in the world. With eight neighbourhoods and over 40 ways to dine, this is the newest addition to the Oasis Class of ships. Royal Caribbean is promising that this new cruise ship will transform weekends away and work meetings with this behemoth — it’s an adventure park for adults and kids alike.

Porto Mirante, Riviera Travel

Experience the thrill of a European adventure with the opulence of a luxurious boutique hotel on Riviera Travel’s new cruise ship. Mirante is set to be 80 metres long with all cabins and every amenity you need spread over four decks. The sun deck features a pool to soak up the sun, a bar and ample seating for the 120 passengers on board; cabins are contemporary and comfortable and the restaurant offers a relaxed, yet fine dining experience with informal seating to harbour an intimate, convivial atmosphere.

MS Estrela, APT Travelmarvel

Is the Douro set to be the big river cruise destination for 2024? APT Travelmarvel seems to think so, becoming the third cruise line in this list to launch a ship on the Golden River in 2024. Estrela is custom-built to sail along the Douro — the sun deck features a large swimming pool, sun beds and a putting green while onboard entertainment will exhibit a typically Portuguese flair. That flair extends to the main restaurant which showcases the best of international flavours, but with a Portuguese twist. There are three cabin categories accommodating 120 guests across 80 metres of ship. The entry-level category, French Balcony Suites, feature an electric slide-down window, allowing you to bask in the glorious landscapes and fresh air as you sail right through the verdant heart of Portugal’s wine region.

EXPLORA II, Explora Journeys

Explora Journeys’ first foray into the cruising world did not disappoint one bit, and their new cruise ship EXPLORA II will match the grandeur of EXPLORA I. Indulge in the lap of luxury within huge entry-level oceanfront suites or above, each boasting a private veranda; each a sanctuary of comfort and sophistication. Culinary delights await at six vibrant restaurants, from Asia to the Mediterranean, France and beyond — all the culinary hotspots of our mouth-watering world are represented. Imagine unwinding in an indoor conservatory pool beneath a retractable roof in the Caribbean sun, a haven of tranquillity. Outside, revel in the embrace of three more pools, one exclusively for adults, or hide in one of 64 private cabanas strategically scattered around the ship. Elevate your shopping experience at sea with an industry-leading selection, including a bespoke Rolex boutique. This is more than just a cruise ship; this is a floating temple dedicated to spiritual, physical and emotional luxury.

Look at our exclusive pictures of EXPLORA I if you don’t believe us.

AmaMagdalena, AmaWaterways

AmaMagdalena is AmaWaterways’ second and final ship launched in 2024. It’s a special one too, as no other cruise line offers guests the chance to set sail up Colombia’s Magdalena River. Join 60 guests on AmaMagdalena as she sails for seven days from Cartagena, heading inland towards Colombia’s verdant heart, before docking in Barranquilla on the scorching Caribbean coast. Against a backdrop of incredible scenery, guests will be able to enjoy local cuisine and spot endemic wildlife from the signature comfort of an AmaWaterways ship. The spacious amenity-filled staterooms and suites are between 237 and 516 ft² and all feature AmaWaterways’ signature twin balcony design, with both a French balcony and an outside balcony.

A diverse crop of new ships will set sail in 2024 , including intimate yacht -style vessels to never-before-seen mega ships from luxury players like Silversea and Cunard. There will be plenty of bells and whistles expected of these brands, including restaurants from top chefs, but also a few features new to the industry (think glass domes on the hull). Some are sister ships to those already on the waters, but with enough points of difference to feel like something entirely new—including the soon-to-be-sailing largest ship in the world, from Royal Caribbean, of course.

Ships aside, cruises will be taking us deeper into places only lightly touched by international travel next year, too. Australia’s Kimberley region, one of Conde Nast Traveller's Best Places to Go in 2024 , is the focus for new expedition sailings from Seabourn, while Lindblad ships will hit up the little-travelled equatorial islands of the Mid-Atlantic on a crossing from Brazil to the Azores.

Cruise line: Cunard

Cunard’s new ship Queen Anne , launching in May, will be the line’s 249th ship since 1840. She will sail mostly in Europe, including around the British Isles as well as through the fjords of Norway.

When it embarks in late 2024, the Disney Treasure will include a Mexican restaurant inspired by “Coco.”

Disney Treasure

Cruise line: Disney Cruise Line

Set to embark its first passengers in late 2024, Disney Treasure incorporates many features from the earlier sister Disney Wish , with some brand-new additions for its first new ship in a decade.

Princess launches the new Sphere Class with Sun Princess—the line’s largest ship yet.

The Icon of the Seas will be the world's largest cruise ship with a capacity for 7600.

Icon of the Seas

Cruise line: Royal Caribbean

This is an eye-popper. Launching a new class of ships , Icon of the Seas will be the world’s largest cruise ship capable of carrying 7,600 passengers. The ship’s focal art piece will be the 82-foot AquaDome on the bow, which will house the ship’s AquaTheater for aquatic stage productions capped by a 50-foot waterfall. Also new to Icon are Royal Caribbean’s first food hall-style dining concept, the first swim-up bar, the largest pool and waterpark at sea. Icon will homeport in Miami with its first sailing in January 2024.

Ritz-Carlton’s second yacht in the fleet will be nearly twice the size of the Evrima , which launched the brand in 2022. The yacht will have 228 suites—each with private terraces—a Ritz-Carlton Spa and a Ritz Kids program venue. Guests will also enjoy a marina-style watersports platform and a nearly one-to-one ratio of onboard staff members to guests. Planned to split its time between the Mediterranean and Caribbean, the yacht’s 2024 launch date has not yet been announced.

Le Voyage, the signature Daniel Boulud restaurant introduced on Celebrity Beyond , is completely redesigned with dramatic architecture in an intimate space. Also all-new in design are the ship's casino and art gallery, plus the addition of a 24-seat outdoor terrace to Blu, the clean-cuisine restaurant exclusive to Aqua Class guests, and a new plant-based tasting menu at Eden Restaurant.

Cruise line: Seabourn

From May through August, 2024, Seabourn Pursuit will sail between Darwin and Broome, Australia, in a lonely region of the continent’s northwest coast known as Kimberley, famous for technicolor contrasts between blue ocean and multicolor terrain in all forms—from sandstone peaks to coral reefs and towering waterfalls. Guests might visit a pearl farm, or be immersed in abundant wildlife at all turns.

Cruise line: Lindblad Expeditions

In October 2024, National Geographic Endurance will embark on an epic 24-day sailing from Salvador, Brazil, exploring clusters of equatorial islands en route to the Azores. Cape Verde, the Canary Islands, Madeira, and the Azores are all on the itinerary, with terrain ranging from volcanoes to verdant jungles. A highlight of the trip will be the mid-ocean St. Peter and Paul Archipelago, an outcropping of rocks home to seabirds and endemic reef fish that can be found nowhere else on earth.

This major cruise line operator just announced its biggest ship order ever

newest cruise ships 2024

One of the world’s leading cruise operators unveiled its biggest ship order ever on Monday.

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. will take delivery of eight ships between 2026 and 2036 across its three brands.

Norwegian Cruise Line will welcome four ships in 2030, 2032, 2034 and 2036, each with a capacity of close to 5,000 guests. The additions are subject to financing.

The vessels will follow the line’s previously announced Prima-Plus class vessels.

The upscale Oceania Cruises will take delivery of two 1,450-guest ships in 2027 and 2029, and luxury line Regent Seven Seas Cruises will add two ships in 2026 and 2029, each accommodating 850 passengers.

"This strategic new-ship order across all three of our award-winning brands provides for the steady introduction of cutting-edge vessels into our fleet and solidifies our long-term growth,” Harry Sommer, the company’s president and CEO, said in a news release . “It also allows us to significantly leverage our operating scale, strengthen our commitment to innovation and enhance our ability to offer our guests new products and experiences, all while providing opportunities to enhance the efficiency of our fleet.”

Specifics about the ships’ accommodations and amenities will be announced “in the coming months,” according to the release.

The company will also add a new multi-ship pier at its private Bahamas island, Great Stirrup Cay, scheduled for completion by late 2025. The pier will be able to accommodate two large ships at once.

See Four Seasons' upcoming ultra-luxury cruise with a $350,000-a-week suite bigger than most homes

  • Four Seasons says it will begin sailing an  ultra-luxury yacht cruise in January 2026.
  • The 222-guest vessel would have 95 spacious suites and 11 dining options — but food wouldn't be free.
  • The largest suite would have four floors and bedrooms, a spa, and a price of $350,000 per sailing.

Insider Today

Four Seasons plans to expand its high-end hotels and resorts portfolio with a luxury 222-guest cruise ship.

The company says the 95-suite vessel will debut in January 2026 and cost a minimum of $20,000 per weeklong sailing.

For that price, the luxury hospitality giant says travelers would enjoy a one-to-one guest-to-staff ratio and massive suites spanning as many as four floors. If all goes as planned, the 679-foot-long Four Seasons I could become one of the most expensive and opulent options in the cruise industry.

The ultra-plush 14-deck Four Seasons I is scheduled for 19 voyages in 2026 to more than 130 Caribbean and Mediterranean ports.

Reservations opened two weeks ago. Those interested can register to join a waitlist or book through a travel agent.

So far, "sales have been very encouraging, and the demand is exciting to see," Thatcher Brown, chief commercial officer and head of joint operations for Marc-Henry Cruise Holdings, told Business Insider in a statement. The company is a joint owner and operator of Four Seasons Yachts.

Renderings make the Four Seasons I look as opulent as the brand's land-based properties.

newest cruise ships 2024

Four Seasons says its vessel will have 95 suites ranging from 537 to 9,975 square feet, some with three bedrooms.

The smallest suite starts at $19,700 for a five-night roundtrip voyage to Athens, Greece.

No windowless interior cabins here: Like other ultra-luxe cruises, the suites would all have terraces and floor-to-ceiling windows.

newest cruise ships 2024

Customers could expect upscale amenities like a walk-in closet, down-filled duvets and pillows, and marble dual vanity bathrooms, per Four Seasons.

The most premium suites would also feature additional accommodations for "personal assistants," such as au pairs or security personnel.

Some options, like the 7,952-square-foot Loft Suite, could be adjoined with seven other cabins to accommodate up to 20 people.

newest cruise ships 2024

Without connecting cabins, the Loft Suite would already have three bedrooms and bathrooms, a powder room, and a sauna.

Others, like the largest Funnel Suite, would have its own spa and kitchen.

newest cruise ships 2024

Four Seasons says the 9,975-square-foot mansion, partially perched in the ship's glass-lined funnel , will span four floors, four bathrooms, three bedrooms, and three powder rooms.

Not to mention the private elevator, pool, and $350,000-a-voyage price tag.

Accommodations of this price and size are generally unheard of in the cruise industry.

newest cruise ships 2024

Luxury operator Silversea says the largest suite on its upcoming 728-guest Silver Ray will be 1,324 square feet. Competitor Regent Seven Seas' new Seven Seas Grandeur debuted in 2023 with a more expansive six-guest 4,443-square-foot option.

Both suites' sizes and prices — Regent's starts at $42,000 per person for a total of $252,000 at maximum occupancy — would be stunted by Four Seasons' promise of a 9,975-square-foot, $350,000 floating mansion.

But cabins with six-digit prices aren't unheard of.

newest cruise ships 2024

While not a luxury cruise line, Royal Caribbean's popular three-floor townhouse on the new Icon of the Seas is being booked at an average of $100,000 a week — although it's about four times smaller than Four Seasons' largest.

Royal Caribbean and other mass-market cruise lines are beloved, in part, for their unlimited complimentary food options.

newest cruise ships 2024

Regent Seven Seas' all-inclusive fare also covers caviar, foie gras, and Champagne.

But don't expect any of these to be free on the Four Seasons I.

Breakfast would be complimentary. Lunch, dinner, and booze would not.

newest cruise ships 2024

The vessel's 11 restaurants and lounges would be priced similarly to Four Seasons' on-land properties. (A dinner entrée at its resort on the Caribbean island of Nevis — also one of the ship's destinations — ranges from $34 to $163.)

The pricing structure may sound odd to most cruise traditionalists. (Hey, at least WiFi would be "free.")

newest cruise ships 2024

But some of the ship's amenities could look familiar: Like most cruise liners, the Four Seasons I would have a pool, spa, and clubs for children and teens.

The company also promises a lounge and marina that will open onto the water, giving guests direct access to activities like snorkeling or windsurfing.

Four Seasons Yachts plans to take delivery of its $399 million vessel, now being built by famed Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri, in late 2025.

newest cruise ships 2024

A second Fincantieri-built ship would join the hospitality company's fleet the following year. The next vessel would cost more than 400 million euros, about $429.2 million, Four Seasons says.

This isn’t Four Seasons' first foray into itinerary-based vacations.

newest cruise ships 2024

The company has also found "tremendous success" in its private jet-based "cruises," Alejandro Reynal, the president and CEO of Four Seasons, told BI in a statement.

Its 2024 vacation-by-air itineraries started at $135,000 for a 16-day Asia tour. Demand has been growing, he said, "signaling that luxury travelers are looking for immersive, exclusive, end-to-end travel journeys that allow them to explore the world with their favorite brands."

But its new ultra-luxe cruise arm would be entering an increasingly crowded luxury market, soon to be dominated by like-minded hospitality giants.

newest cruise ships 2024

High-end Aman Resorts and Orient Express plan to launch their own luxury cruises in 2027 and 2026, respectively.

Staying ahead of the competition, Ritz-Carlton debuted its first 149-suite Evrima yacht cruise in 2021, with a second 224-cabin ship scheduled to begin sailing later this year. Its least expensive itinerary is currently $5,100 per person for a six-night voyage from Barbados to Puerto Rico in early 2025.

Interested in a hotelier-owned vacation at sea but don't want to pay the luxury price tag? Margaritaville's cruise is an affordable $75 for two nights.

Travel | bob graham, former florida governor and u.s. senator, dies at 87, things to do, subscriber only, travel | ncl details new dining on canaveral-bound norwegian aqua.

Sukhothai is the first Thai restaurant for Norwegian Cruise Line debuting on new ship Norwegian Aqua in 2025. (Courtesy/NCL)

With more room than its two sister ships, Norwegian Cruise Line’s newest vessel will feature several new and redesigned dining concepts when it arrives to Port Canaveral next spring.

Norwegian Aqua is the first of what the line is calling its Prima Plus class, 10% larger than 2021’s Prima and 2023’s Viva coming in at 1,056 feet long, 156,300 gross tons and a 3,571-passenger capacity based on double occupancy. That’s still smaller than the line’s popular Breakaway Plus class ships Escape, Joy, Bliss and Encore.

Still, the extra room means a shift of some of the returning venues found on Prima and Viva and the introduction of three brand new offerings.

At the top of the list is the line’s first dedicated Thai venue called Sukhothai, a specialty restaurant headed to Deck 17 with items such as Thai cashew chicken, salt and pepper prawns and Thai grilled steak salad. And yes, there will be a variety of curries. The venue’s design comes from SMC Design firm out of London aiming to blend traditional and contemporary Thai elements, according to the line.

“(Guests) will be greeted with a warm, inviting atmosphere of bamboo and rice paper pendant lights; a striking geometric patterned floor; and colorful furniture transporting diners to the culturally rich country of Thailand,” according to a press release.

It joins a pair of returning Asian fare venues, the Japanese hibachi Hasuki as well as relatively new offering Nama Sushi and Sashimi, which is found on both Prima and Viva, but will feature an updated look on Aqua. Nama’s design from NCL-favorite designers Studio DADO out of Miami will draw from Manga art.

“Guests can expect a playful dining experience surrounded by bold colors of lime green and black,” the line stated.

Planterie is a second new food offering that will actually be one of 10 cuisines to be offered at returning food hall concept Indulge Food Hall on Deck 8. The menu will be all plant-based bowls and other healthy options, the line’s first dedicated eatery with a full plant-based menu. Example items include the Southwest Bowl with smoked tempeh and the Mediterranean Goddess Bowl with spiced vegetables, tabbouleh and honey-roasted carrots.

Indulge Food Hall will get a design makeover by New York’s Rockwell Group going for deep wood accents and gold and metal furnishings. It’s one of the more popular and free options on board both Prima and Viva with both indoor and outdoor seating, and a reputation for getting cruisers their food fast. They sit down, order food using tablets from among all the available offerings such as Mediterranean tapas, barbecue and dessert.

Another new venue will be dedicated to wine. The Swirl Wine Bar also designed by Studio DADO will be “tucked away” on Deck 6.

“The hidden enclave will feature a comprehensive wine-by-the-glass menu, and an extensive list of rare and premium vintages,” the line stated. “The venue’s architecture is inspired by the captivating beauty and curvature of the geologically stunning Antelope Canyon in Arizona, with warm color hues complemented by cascading horizontal lines and serene blue touches create a perfectly inviting and enchanting space for guests to unwind.”

The sustainable-themed Metropolitan bar will be getting a new and larger home with new design as well, courtesy of Studio DADO. Moving from mid-ship to the aft on Deck 7, it will now feature a grand piano and small stage for live music with an art-deco design from mid-1900s New York.

The Commodore Room is getting a makeover for Norwegian Aqua when it debuts in 2025. (Courtesy/NCL)

Studio DADO is also reworking the complimentary dining space, the Commodore Room, with a more rustic sea-fairing theme.

“Paying homage to the imaginative narrative of the captain’s room, the venue will transport guests to the past times of maritime sophistication with antique wood furnishings; leather banquettes; floors that mimic the lines of a pier; and incredible stone accents, all with a delicate, modern touch,” the line stated.

Other venues getting makeover for Aqua include the Surfside Cafe buffet and Mediterranean seafood option Palomar as well as the Penrose Bar and Waves Pool Bar. The Whiskey Bar and Belvedere Bar are also migrating to new spaces on the ship.

The increased space also means more seating for Hasuki, The Local Bar & Grill and steakhouse Cagney’s.

The ship will also see the return of free venue Hudson’s with its 270-degree views as well as specialty venues French restaurant Le Bistro, Mexican restaurant Los Lobos and Italian restaurant Onda by Scarpetta.

Norwegian Aqua will begin sailing from Port Canaveral when it debuts in 2025. (Courtesy/NCL)

Aqua will begin seven-night sailing of Caribbean itineraries from Port Canaveral beginning in April 2025 before migrating to New York in August and then back to Florida, but sailing out of Miami from October 2025-April 2026.

Among the ship highlights will be what the line says is the first hybrid coaster at sea, a digital sports complex and the first three-bedroom duplex suites for the cruise line in its exclusive area called The Haven.

Set to become NCL’s 20th ship in its fleet, construction continues at the Fincantieri shipyards in Italy, and it marks the first of four planned ships in the Prima Plus class through 2028.

NCL’s parent company recently announced it was also working to secure funding for what would be the biggest class of ship ever for the line at more than 200,000 gross tons with four ships four ships on order from 2030-2036.

Breaking news, father of florida cruise passenger, 20, who jumped off royal caribbean ship after argument believes his son is still alive: report.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

The father of the 20-year-old passenger who jumped off a Royal Caribbean cruise ship last Thursday in a reportedly drunken, impulsive leap believes his son is still alive nearly a week later.

Francel Parker, dad of missing Levion Parker, told the Daily Sun that he believes his child — whom he called a master diver — is still alive in the waters off the Bahamas.

“As soon as he went off the side, I prayed over him. I was confident the prayers I said over my son were heard. I stand on the word of God. I believe he is alive,” Francel Parker said to the local Florida paper Wednesday.

Levion Parker was ID'd as the 20 year old who jumped to his death from the Royal Caribbean cruise ship.

The US Coast Guard called off its search for the North Port man a day earlier.

The younger Parker allegedly jumped off the 18-story Liberty of the Seas around 4 a.m. in front of his helpless dad and younger brother after getting into an argument with his father, witnesses previously told The Post.

But Francel, who runs an AC business in Port Charlotte, told the local newspaper that he wasn’t arguing with Levion and that his son wasn’t trying to take his own life.

He said Levion is a skilled diver who works on a commercial fishing boat, and he is demanding to know how his underage son was given alcohol on the four-day cruise to Cuba and the Bahamas’ Grand Inagua Island.

“We don’t drink,” Francel said. “I’d like to know how my son was served so much alcohol.”

Levion Parker is shown pictured with his family.

Another passenger onboard the cruise who witnessed Levion’s heart-stopping jump said Francel was “fussing at him for being drunk.”

Bryan Sims told The Post that he was hanging out with Levion and his 18-year-old brother, Seth, in the hotel tub of the ship in the early hours of April 4 before they went their separate ways.

After Sims had used the restroom and dried off, he bumped into the brothers and their father near the elevators.

Levion Parker's dad claims his son is still alive, adding that he's a skilled diver who works on a commercial fishing boat.

“As we were walking from the hot tub back to the elevators, his dad and brother were walking towards us. His dad was fussing at him for being drunk, I guess,” Sims said of the moment before Parker jumped.

“When we got to them, he said to his dad, ‘I’ll fix this right now.’ And he jumped out the window in front of us all,” Sims said, calling what he witnessed “surreal.”

Another cruise guest described the frantic chaos that followed.

“There was a lot of yelling, and the crew was alerted immediately,” Deborah Morrison told The Post.

A witness claimed to have saw the father become growingly upset about Levion being too drunk while on the cruise.

“His family was horrified. Just beside themselves. I can’t even begin to imagine what they’re going through.”

Francel told the Daily Sun that he threw six life rings off the ship in hopes of saving his son before the massive vessel was able to come to a stop about 20 minutes later.

Royal Caribbean said it “immediately” launched search boats to look for the 20-year-old and alerted the Coast Guard, which later took over the search.

Royal Caribbean said it called for search boats to look for Levion Parker alerted the Coast Guard.

At least 406 people on major cruise lines and ferries have gone overboard between 2000 and 2024, according to data collected by retired professor and cruise industry researcher Ross Klein.

Death rates among overboard passengers and crew members vary significantly among cruise lines, but even the safest cruise companies were only able to rescue about 40% of people who fall or jump off the ship, Klein told the Washington Post in July.

How to choose the best cruise ship cabin for you.

Balcony staterooms on Norwegian Prima feature a Scandinavian color palette with some modern design ... [+] touches.

Choosing your cruise ship cabin or stateroom is an essential part of planning a dream cruise vacation. The right accommodation can enhance your cruise experience, providing you with a comfortable retreat after a day of adventure, but some choices may turn out to be an expensive mistake.

Here’s how to select the best cruise ship cabin for your needs, whether you're seeking breathtaking views, peace and quiet, convenience, or the best value.

Cruise Ship Cabin Grades

From motel-sized inside cabins to luxurious suites that rival the most expensive land-based hotels, cruise ships offer a range of accommodation grades to suit all preferences and budgets:

Interior Cabins : The most budget-friendly option, these cabins are located inside the ship and have no windows. Although they are often just as spacious as oceanview cabins, the lack of natural light may be off-putting to some.

Oceanview Cabins : Offering a window or porthole, these cabins provide natural light and views of the ocean or ports, a good middle-ground option. On modern ships, such cabins will likely be located towards the bottom of the ship, as balcony cabins now dominate ship exteriors.

Balcony Cabins : These cabins feature private balconies allowing direct access to ocean breezes and private views. These cabins are perfect for those who prefer to enjoy the scenery privately.

Some ships offer cabins with direct access to the promenade deck, while the largest ships, including MSC World Europa , offer balconies overlooking an internal courtyard or promenade.

The newest, largest cruise ships such as Royal Caribbean's 'Icon of the Seas' offer a huge range of ... [+] cabin grades and locations.

Suites : The most spacious and luxurious option, suites often come with extra amenities and services, ideal for travelers looking for a premium experience. Separate bedrooms, wraparound balconies, and even butler service are some common features of cruise ship suites.

Pioneered by Norwegian Cruise Line, solo traveler cabins are becoming more common across the industry. Whereas for many years solo cabins were usually interior grade, there are now oceanview and even balcony cabins available for solo travelers on some lines.

Consider The Location

Perhaps more so than the accommodation grade, the cabin location can significantly impact your cruise experience.

Top-to-bottom : Cabins on lower decks are usually cheaper with the added benefit of experiencing less movement in rough seas.

However, depending on the size of the ship, they could be farther from entertainment and dining areas. On big ships, there may be 10 or even more flights of stairs between your cabin and the pool, sun deck, buffet, and other amenities found at the top of the ship. There will be elevators, of course, but you should expect queues at busy times.

Cabins on higher decks will provide better views from balconies and suites, and good access to many of the ship’s amenities, but passengers may feel the ship's movement more. You may also hear more noise from outdoor activities on the pool deck.

Cabins on middle floors offer the best combination of access to facilities and less movement in the event of rough seas.

Front-to-back : Just as important as the deck number is the cabin’s location between the ship’s front and rear.

Cabins located at the very front and very back of the ship will experience significantly more movement in the event of rough seas, so choose a cabin towards the middle of the ship if you’re facing multiple sea days or sailing off-season.

Inside cabins on the 'P&O Arvia' cruise ship are a good value accommodation option. They can be ... [+] configured with a double or twin beds.

It’s also worth knowing that most cruise ships feature main dining venues at the rear and the main theater at the front.

The Budget Accommodation Choice

When choosing a cabin, start with understanding your budget. Decide how much you’re willing to spend and remember that while the cabin is important, you’ll also want to budget for on-board activities, excursions, beverages, and other expenses.

If budget matters above all else, an interior cabin is a wise choice. You could also save money by booking a saver fare offered by some cruise lines.

These fares typically don't allow you to select your cabin in advance. This will likely result in you being allocated a cabin at the front or back of the ship, but it will save you money.

Questions To Ask Yourself

If you have more flexibility in your budget, consider what’s important to you in accommodation. If you plan to spend a lot of time in your cabin, you might value a balcony or a spacious room more. Families might look for cabins with connecting doors or extra bed options.

Before booking, read reviews of the ship and specific cabins on websites such as Cruise Critic or watching YouTube reviews. Previous travelers can offer invaluable insight into noise levels, views, and overall satisfaction.

Examine the ship’s layout to see where your cabin is in relation to key areas like the lido deck, dining rooms, and entertainment venues. Consider potential noise from above or below your cabin, especially if it’s immediately above or below a dance floor, crew area, or near the pool.

Your cruise itinerary might also influence your choice of accommodation. For scenic cruises, such as those in Alaska or the Norwegian fjords , a balcony might be worth the splurge to enjoy the magnificent views in relative peace. A balcony breakfast while sailing along a fjord will be an experience to remember.

On the other hand, if you plan to spend most of your time exploring ports and partaking in onboard activities, the type and location of cabin might be of less importance.

AIDA Adjusts Winter 2024; Announces Africa Sailings

  • April 17, 2024

AIDAprima

Due to the ongoing tense security situation in various regions of the Middle East, AIDA Cruises announced it will be adjusting the fall itineraries of the AIDAprima and AIDAstella, according to a Facebook update.

The two ships will not transit through the Red Sea, but rather cruise the longer route around Africa. This requires more extensive changes and several trip cancellations, the company announced.

“In the interests of the safety of our guests and crew, the necessary adjustments to sailing routes are the only responsible option for us. We thank you for your understanding and trust,” the company said in a statement.

The following fall/winter 2024 cruises have been canceled:

  • AIDAprima: “From Hamburg to Barcelona” on October 26th, 2024
  • AIDAprima: “From Hamburg to Mallorca 1” on October 26th, 2024
  • AIDAprima: “From Lisbon to Mallorca” on November 3rd, 2024

Also available from April 29, 2024:

  • “Globe Traveler Canary Islands, South Africa and Mauritius” from Hamburg/to Dubai or Abu Dhabi onboard the AIDAprima from October 26th, 2024 (41, 42 or 43 days)
  • 22 days “From Hamburg via the Canary Islands to Cape Town” on the AIDAprima from October 26, 2024
  • 20 days “From Mallorca via Namibia to Cape Town” on the AIDAstella from October 20, 2024
  • AIDAprima: “Orient from Dubai 2” on November 29, 2024
  • AIDAprima: “Orient from Dubai 1” on November 30, 2024
  • AIDAprima: “Big Orient trip from Dubai” on November 30, 2024
  • AIDAprima: “Orient from Abu Dhabi” on December 1, 2024

The cruise line added that it will reimburse guests for the previously made payments (except for the travel cancellation insurance) as well as for services already booked on myAIDA in accordance with the payment method originally chosen.

As a thank you for a new booking, AIDA guests will receive a voucher. It can be redeemed until December 31, 2024, regardless of when the new trip starts.

In addition to adjusted itineraries, AIDA also announced new cruises to Africa, bookable from April 29, 2024, with further details to be announced soon.

Seatrade Cruise Global 2024 Booth #4011

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MIAMI, April 8, 2024 – LG Business Solutions USA is helping cruise operators imagine the experiences of tomorrow by demonstrating its broad line of cruise-ready TVs, digital signage and DVLED displays at Seatrade Cruise Global 2024 at the Miami Beach Convention Center. According to Jacob Benner, senior hospitality sales director at LG Business Solutions USA, LG is showcasing how its class-leading digital displays can create new opportunities for engagement, messaging and exciting guest experiences.

newest cruise ships 2024

Benner said the star attraction of LG’s booth is the DVLED Zone , centered around the sea-ready outdoor direct-view light-emitting diode display (model GNEB) that can be used for virtually any outdoor display need, including oversized screens to show movies or major sporting events.

The industry-first LG technology’s marine-grade protective coatings, robust IP67 protection and corrosion-preventing design enable reliable performance and longevity, while the adjustable 6,000 nit brightness capability is designed to deliver stunning picture quality even in direct sunlight. The availability of two versions offering either 6.25mm or 8.33mm pixel pitches, combined with convenient front and rear maintenance access, makes it easy for operators and design professionals to optimize experiences and expenditures.

Visitors can also sample the company’s Ultra Slim DVLED signage displays with pixel pitches as low as 1.5mm, ponder new creative opportunities made possible by the innovative Transparent Color LED Film that transforms glass surfaces into digital displays without impeding visibility, and view a 136-inch All-in-One DVLED display with the webOS™ smart platform, an embedded controller and speakers that make it ideal for atriums and other high-traffic areas.

Booth visitors can also sample a variety of digital signage displays in the Public Space Signage Zone , such as LG’s 86-inch ultra-wide and 37-inch “Stretch” displays that are perfect for columns, hallways and maximizing utilization of unique spaces. Those looking to increase engagement will love the 55-inch touchscreen that can be deployed for disseminating information, wayfinding or to offer unique gaming options.

Cruisers who appreciate novel sights and sounds onboard will delight at the possibilities offered by LG’s 55-inch Transparent OLED display that, for example, can upgrade customer service desk experiences with advanced see-through displays. Other public signage products include the LG Kiosk, a standalone unit with a 27-inch touchscreen ideal for accessing information, facilitating check-ins or offering special event ticketing, as well as LG 75- and 110-inch 4K displays that highlight the vibrance and impact of high-quality content.

The company will also show off its advanced new electric vehicle charging stations for cruise port visitors to charge their EVs. These owner-operated chargers will help cruise brands take part in the EV charging market without relying on third parties, empowering them to set their own rates and ensure enough capacity to meet local demands.
