Dictionary Definition of 'jaunt'

A short trip or excursion, usually for pleasure or leisure, often implying a sense of casualness or informality. "The romantic jaunt to the city was the perfect getaway for the couple."

Detailed Meaning of 'jaunt'

The term is often used to describe a quick trip or outing that is taken for fun, rather than for a specific purpose. For example, a weekend jaunt to the countryside, or a day jaunt to a nearby city. A jaunt can also imply a sense of adventure or spontaneity, as it suggests a trip that is taken on a whim or without much planning. The term is often used in contrast to a more formal or structured trip, such as a vacation or business trip. Jaunt also implies a sense of brevity, it's a short and usually pleasant trip, usually it's not a long term commitment. In general, a jaunt is a short and casual trip, usually taken for pleasure or leisure, that implies a sense of adventure and spontaneity.

History and Etymology of 'jaunt'

The noun 'jaunt' has its etymological roots in the Middle French word 'jent,' which meant 'a day's journey' or 'a day's work.' This Middle French term, in turn, can be traced back to the Old French word 'journée,' meaning 'day' and, by extension, 'a day's travel or excursion.' The transition from 'journée' to 'jent' in Middle French reflected the linguistic shifts of the time. In English, 'jaunt' emerged during the 17th century, retaining its essence as a short trip or excursion, often for pleasure or leisure, with a connotation of informality and casualness. This etymology underscores the historical association of 'jaunt' with the idea of a brief journey or day's outing.

Where is the Francis Scott Key Bridge? What to know about collapsed Baltimore bridge

The collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge , a major transportation link in the Baltimore area, sparked a massive search and rescue effort early Tuesday morning.

The bridge has been a critical transportation passageway along the East Coast for decades. Video captured the collapse , after Singapore-flagged container ship, the Dali, collided with one of the bridge's pillars.

The ship had caught fire, and several vehicles fell into the river below.

Here's what to know about the Francis Scott Key Bridge.

Follow here for live updates → Baltimore's Key Bridge collapses after ship collision; rescue effort underway

Where is the Francis Scott Key Bridge located?

The bridge crosses over the Patapsco River on I-695 and is the final link on the Baltimore Beltway, according to the Maryland Transportation Authority .

It is the outermost of the three tollways that cross Baltimore's Harbor.

How long is the Francis Scott Key Bridge?

The 4-lane bridge structure alone is 1.6 miles long. The facility also includes the Curtis Creek Drawbridge. Including approach roadways, the entire stretch is around 10.9 miles long, MDTA said.

Why did a ship hit the Francis Scott Key Bridge?

The ship, a container vessel chartered by Maersk, apparently lost power a few minutes before striking the bridge, a senior U.S. official told USA TODAY .

No Maersk crew or personnel were onboard the vessel when it struck the bridge, according to a statement from the company. It was operated by a charter company, Synergy Group, and owned by Grace Ocean Pte., based in Singapore, and ultimately bound for Sri Lanka.

Accidents like this, called Marine casualties, are not uncommon, the official told USA TODAY, with an allision (an immobile object being struck by a ship) occurring about every 10 years or so. Investigators will likely look into the cause of the power outage and whether there was a mechanical failure on the ship.

How old is the Key Bridge in Baltimore?

The Francis Scott Key Bridge opened in March 1977, according to the Maryland Transportation Authority .

What type of bridge is the Francis Scott Key?

The steel-arched bridge was the second-longest continuous-truss bridge span in the world when it was built and remains the second longest in the United States and third in the world,  according to the American Civil Engineering Society .

When was the Francis Scott Key Bridge built?

Construction of the Francis Scott Key Bridge began in 1972.

Francis Scott Key Bridge has a deep history

According to the MDTA, the bridge crosses over the Patapsco River, near where Francis Scott Key, the bridge's namesake, was inspired to write the lyrics of the Star Spangled Banner.

Key is believed to have witnessed the bombardment of Fort McHenry on the night of Sept. 12, 1814, within 100 yards of the modern-day bridge. That battle is what inspired him to the national anthem.

How vital is the Francis Scott Key Bridge?

The bridge is critical to East Coast shipping. The port’s private and public terminals handled 847,158 autos and light trucks in 2023, the most of any U.S. port. The port also handles farm and construction machinery, sugar, gypsum and coal, according to a Maryland government website.

Creating a Corporate Social Responsibility Program with Real Impact

jaunt long definition

Lessons from multinational companies that adapted their CSR practices based on local feedback and knowledge.

Exploring the critical role of experimentation in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), research on four multinational companies reveals a stark difference in CSR effectiveness. Successful companies integrate an experimental approach, constantly adapting their CSR practices based on local feedback and knowledge. This strategy fosters genuine community engagement and responsive initiatives, as seen in a mining company’s impactful HIV/AIDS program. Conversely, companies that rely on standardized, inflexible CSR methods often fail to achieve their goals, demonstrated by a failed partnership due to local corruption in another mining company. The study recommends encouraging broad employee participation in CSR and fostering a culture that values CSR’s long-term business benefits. It also suggests that sustainable investors and ESG rating agencies should focus on assessing companies’ experimental approaches to CSR, going beyond current practices to examine the involvement of diverse employees in both developing and adapting CSR initiatives. Overall, embracing a dynamic, data-driven approach to CSR is essential for meaningful social and environmental impact.

By now, almost all large companies are engaged in corporate social responsibility (CSR): they have CSR policies, employ CSR staff, engage in activities that aim to have a positive impact on the environment and society, and write CSR reports. However, the evolution of CSR has brought forth new challenges. A stark contrast to two decades ago, when the primary concern was the sheer neglect of CSR, the current issue lies in the ineffective execution of these practices. Why do some companies implement CSR in ways that create a positive impact on the environment and society, while others fail to do so? Our research reveals that experimentation is critical for impactful CSR, which has implications for both companies that implement CSR and companies that externally monitor these CSR activities, such as sustainable investors and ESG rating agencies.

Brian Setzer and Stray Cats announce 2024 tour. Get tickets today

The Stray Cats are getting back in the swing of things.

Brian Setzer’s long-running rockabilly group just announced they’re hitting the road for the first time since 2019.

They’ll be joined by special guest The Midnight Cowgirls at all shows.

Near the end of their brief 15-concert jaunt, the “Rock This Town” trio will play back-to-back-to-back gigs at Lewiston, NY’s Artpark Outdoor Amphitheater on Tuesday, Aug. 13, New York City’s The Rooftop at Pier 17 on Thursday, Aug. 15 and Atlantic City’s Ovation Hall on Friday, Aug. 16.

“With just a string bass, a guitar and a drum, we have always had less instruments and gear, but more rumble, more twang, more shake and more bang than anyone else,” double bassist Lee Rocker shared in a press release.

“Now’s the right time to bring it back.”

And if you want to see Setzer, Rocker and drummer Slim Jim Phantom bring it back, tickets can be scooped up for most shows as of today.

Although inventory isn’t available on Ticketmaster until Friday, March 29, fans who want to ensure they have tickets ahead of time can purchase on sites like Vivid Seats before tickets are officially on sale.

Vivid Seats is a secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

They have a 100% buyer guarantee that states your transaction will be safe and secure and will be delivered before the event.

A complete calendar including all tour dates, venues and links to buy tickets can be found here.

It’s been a long five years since Setzer, Rocker and Phantom took the stage together.

While we can’t predict what they’ll juke, jive and wail to this time around, here’s a look at what they performed at their last show back in 2019, courtesy of Set List FM :

01.) “Cat Fight (Over a Dog Like Me)”

02.) “Runaway Boys”

03.) “Double Talkin’ Baby” (Gene Vincent & His Blue Caps cover)

04.) “Three Time’s a Charm”

05.) “Stray Cat Strut”

06.) “Mean Pickin’ Mama”

07.) “Gene and Eddie”

08.) “Cry Baby”

09.) “I Won’t Stand in Your Way”

10.) “Cannonball Rag” (Merle Travis cover)

11.) “Misirlou” ([traditional] cover)

12.) “When Nothing’s Going Right”

13.) “(She’s) Sexy + 17”

14.) “Bring It Back Again”

15.) “My One Desire” (Dorsey Burnette cover) (at the show, it was called a Ricky Nelson song)

16.) “Blast Off”

17.) “Lust n Love”

18.) “Fishnet Stockings”

19.) “Rock This Town”

20.) “Rock It Off”

21.) “Built for Speed”

22.) “Rumble in Brighton”

The rockabilly vets’ most recent record of original music hit shelves in 2019.

“40,” celebrating the band’s 40th anniversary, is a welcome return to the band’s classic sound.

Comprised of 12 tracks with titles like “Cat Fight (Over A Dog Like Me),” “Rock It Off” and “I’ve Got Love If You Want It,” the threesome pick right up where they left off.

There are no major surprises on the audience but that’s not why fans listen to Stray Cats — they do rockabilly and they do it damn well.

That being said, “I’ll Be Looking Out For You” is a surefire barnburning firecracker of a tune.

And “Desperado” is a dusty Link Wray/Dick Dale-esque surf rock instrumental you’ll want to play on repeat for weeks.

If you want to hear for yourself, check out “40” here .

Of course, Stray Cats’ opening act is a three-piece outfit.

Midnight Cowgirls, made up of singer Kandle Osborne, bassist Jennie Vee Phantom and drummer Leah Bluestein (along with self-described shapeshifter noisemaker Rex Elle) are old school country through and through.

We recommend checking out their Instagram reels here for a sample of their throwback look and sound.

While no group is quite like Stray Cats, here are five of their contemporaries on the road these next few months that you won’t want to miss live.
