Mozambique Tours & Safari Packages

Mozambique’s main draw are the countless paradisiacal palm-fringed beaches that line its 2,600km/1,616mi Indian Ocean coastline and innumerable offshore islands. Serviced by some first-class luxury resorts, it is the perfect country for a relaxing beach holiday, as well as for more active marine pursuits such as snorkeling, diving and coastal safaris. Inland, Mozambique’s national parks and reserves were once major attractions, but a prolonged civil war that ended in 1992 left them poached out and depleted of wildlife. Despite this, recent rehabilitation efforts mean that some of these little-visited parks are now slowly emerging as worthwhile goals for adventurers seeking an off-the-beaten-track safari experience.

6 Questions About Mozambique Tours

Ariadne van Zandbergen

Answered by

Ariadne van zandbergen.

africa safari mozambique

Why should I go to Mozambique?

“There are plenty of reasons to go to Mozambique. With its endlessly long, unspoiled Indian Ocean coastline, Mozambique is the ultimate beach destination. The picture-perfect setting of turquoise waters lapping on white sandy beaches fringed by swaying palm trees is like a dream come true. The marine life is phenomenal. You’ll have the opportunity to dive or snorkel with shoals of colorful fish zigzagging around the beautiful coral reefs. Or you can take a boat trip further offshore to get close to dolphins and whales. Real adventure enthusiasts might want to swim with whale sharks. Meeting the local Mozambicans is easy; these laid-back people love to welcome visitors to their piece of paradise. Go back in time with them on a traditional dhow cruise, check out the art deco Portuguese-influenced architecture, or dance the night away in one of Maputo’s edgy nightclubs. Whatever rocks your boat, don’t walk away without tasting the many tantalizing Mozambican dishes, especially the famous LM prawns.”

Where should I go in Mozambique?

“There is no shortage of stunning beaches in Mozambique. The most popular resort towns are in the south of the country. Ponta do Ouro, located at the southernmost extremity of Mozambique, is usually visited from South Africa and is a great place for diving and fishing. Nearby Maputo Special Reserve is a sanctuary for an estimated 450 to 500 coastal elephants. Nature-lovers will enjoy the bush-and-beach combo in a pristine protected environment. Other resort towns further north include Xai-Xai, Bilene, Tofo and Vilankulo. The latter is perhaps the biggest tourist hub in Mozambique. You’ll find lots of activities available here, including boat trips to the nearby Bazaruto Archipelago where you’ll enjoy some of the best snorkeling and diving reefs in the country. While you can visit these reefs from mainland Mozambique, staying on one of the archipelago’s islands is a more exclusive option. With several luxury lodges to choose from, the islands are ideal for a romantic getaway. More remote and less developed is the string of islands in the north, known as Quirimbas Archipelago. As is the case further south, the main attractions are the beaches and the marine wildlife, such as whales, dolphins, turtles, dugongs and a magnificent coral reef with associated fish. Aside from these natural wonders, you’ll get a taste of the country’s turbulent history with historical landmarks, such as the old Portuguese fort on Ibo Island.”

Can I extend my African safari with a trip to Mozambique?

“Although Mozambique has plenty to offer for a stand-alone holiday, it is also the perfect companion to a safari in East or southern Africa. It is very easy to add some days in Mozambique to a South Africa safari, for example. Connections are usually good from Kenya and Tanzania, though you might need an extra flight hop. There are few beaches in East and southern Africa that can really compete with the islands of Mozambique as idyllic destinations. The water is always warm, the reefs protect the shore from big waves, the marine life is incredibly varied and the islands are totally unspoiled. It is no surprise that you’ll find some of the most exquisite lodges here. They cater to families, newlyweds, adventure enthusiasts and people wanting to just get away from it all for a couple of days.”

Which parks should I visit on a Mozambique safari?

“While Mozambique is mostly rated as a beach destination, it has some parks and reserves worth visiting too. None of these parks competes with the top safari destinations in the likes of Kenya, Tanzania and South Africa. However, if you’re looking for a bit of an off-the-beaten-track adventure, they have a lot to offer. Gorongosa National Park, located at the southern end of the Rift Valley, incorporates a great variety of landscapes and habitats, including lakes, savannahs, woodland, mountains and rainforest. You’re likely to see elephants and plenty of antelope species here, and lions are making a strong comeback too. Limpopo, Banhine and Zinave National Parks all form part of Greater Limpopo Transfrontier Park, a vast cross-border conservation initiative that also incorporates Gonarezhou National Park in Zimbabwe and South Africa’s world-famous Kruger National Park. Limpopo NP is the most regularly visited of Mozambique’s inland parks, but most of this traffic is merely in transit between Kruger and the Mozambican coast. And while Limpopo is home to all of the Big Five, wildlife densities are very low, partly due to a lack of permanent water. The recently rehabilitated Zinave NP, by contrast, is an off-the-beaten gem where you stand a good chance of spotting elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, hippo and white rhino, along with a wide variety of antelope. Predators that prowl Zinave include lion and leopard but densities are low and sightings very rare. Set along the far south coast of Mozambique, Maputo National Park is home to elephant, zebra, hippo and several species of antelope. This scenic park now incorporates several oceanfront lodges that offer a truly special bush-and-beach experience.”

What is the best time of the year for a holiday in Mozambique and/or a Mozambique safari?

“The tropical climate of Mozambique makes it suitable as a beach destination throughout the year. However, the months of December to March can be very wet and torrential rains are not uncommon over this period. Underwater visibility for snorkeling and diving is best from April to June and from September to November, when the sea tends to be calm. The dry months from July to October are best for wildlife viewing. At this time animals congregate around lakes and rivers and the thinning bush makes spotting easier.”

How much will this tour cost?

“There are several variables determining the price of a Mozambique tour. However, as a guideline, you can expect a tour package to cost around US$300 to US$500 per person per day. The level of accommodation is the biggest factor. Most beach resorts fall in the mid-range to luxury span, but there are a few budget options as well. If you’re looking for a tour visiting several places in the country, you might need some internal flights, which will add to the price. When available, a group tour might be more cost-effective than a private tour. Taking all these variables into account makes for a wide range of prices.”

Wildlife & Wilderness: Gorongosa Safari

Known in Mozambique as the ‘Park for Peace’, Gorongosa is one of Africa’s last true wild places with the greatest wildlife restoration story. When the war ended in 1992, the landscape was devastated and more than 90% of Gorongosa’s large mammals had disappeared. Efforts were made to rehabilitate Gorongosa after the war but it wasn’t until 2004, when American philanthropist Greg Carr partnered with the Mozambican government to restore the park, that it started coming back to life. The Gorongosa Restoration Project has worked with the Government of Mozambique for the past 20 years to restore wildlife to the Gorongosa National Park, in what is perhaps the greatest restoration success in Africa.

  • Pre Departure

Important Touring Tips:

  • The itinerary is a guide ONLY and is subject to change
  • There is a mix of different nationalities, ages and cultures on every tour
  • Space in the truck is limited – PLEASE DON’T BRING TOO MUCH LUGGAGE!
  • The tours are high adventure tours, so don’t expect European Coach tours or lodge safaris
  • The tours are often created in a circular route i.e. where one tour ends, another begins
  • The rate is the same throughout the year
  • Should you be travelling to Kenya. The Kenya government has instituted a Zero Tolerance on usage of All Plastic Bags. On the spot fines (400 USD) are being issued.

What are adventure tours?

These are adventure tours perfect for people who enjoy camping and the outdoors. You get to experience the “real Africa” by camping out at night, sitting around the campfire, taking in beautiful scenery, visiting local shops and getting to know the locals.v

What is a typical day?

A typical day on either your camping or accommodated Africa overland tour starts with an early morning wake-up call and a cup of tea or coffee followed by breakfast. Campers pack-up their campsite while comfort travellers check-out of their accommodation and hit the road.

We set off to our next destination travelling through a vast variety of landscapes, making our own new memories with new friends. Each day in Africa offers a new experience from an early morning sunrise hike, quad biking, sky dive or guided nature walk. The options are endless!

We have shorter travel days arriving at our campsite by midday or early afternoon, to enjoy lunch before joining our afternoon activity or simply enjoying a relaxed afternoon at your own pace.

On our longer travel days an early start ensures an earlier arrival at our campsite. We stop off at scenic spots to stretch our legs and take in the scenery, before lunch is enjoyed at a shady spot en-route. A mid- to-late afternoon arrival at our campsite allows us to set up camp, enjoy a beautiful sunset and end the day sitting around the campfire, under the stars.

Our best advice: expect the unexpected as this is Africa! We travel mainly on gravel roads and poorly kept tarmac roads – both setting the pace at which we travel. We do our best to arrive at our next destination, safety is our number one priority and while our overland vehicles are comfortable and spacious, they are not sports cars!

What type of vehicles do we use?

  • A custom-built, comfortable, safe and self-sufficient Africa overland truck to withstand the rugged African terrain.
  • Various vehicles are used on varying tours, with each offering comfortable seats with ample leg room.
  • Each vehicle has large glass windows for uninterrupted views and perfect for game drives.
  • Smaller 4×4 land cruiser type vehicles are used for game viewing in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater, due to the roads being tougher and too narrow for the overland trucks.
  • Each overland vehicle includes a passenger safe to safely keep money + passports + flight tickets + credit cards. The keys are kept with your Tour Leader who will advise of safety requirements in place concerning the safe.Who is suited to go on an adventure tour?
  • Almost anyone can go on an adventure.

Some level of fitness is required due to accessing the vehicle and spending long days on bumpy roads (can take it out of you).EAST AFRICA TOURS require a more adventurous, fearless attitude and are suited to a younger traveller. If you are planning to trek with the Mountain Gorillas or climbing Mount Killi you will need to have a higher fitness level.

WHAT TO EXPECT ON A CAMPING OR ACCOMMODATED TOUR

Camping tours:.

A camping safari is for travellers who want a hands-on experience of Mother Nature. The guide(s) will do most of the work, but you will be required to assist with various tasks such as preparing the food, washing up, cleaning out the truck and setting up the campsite and your tent. If you dream of a lifetime African adventure, embark on a journey with us sleeping under the stars while listening to the sounds of wildlife in the distance.

We offer camping safaris suited to travellers who may prefer to travel in a younger group (aged 18 to 39). Or, you can choose a mixed age group (18 to 60). A camping safari must not be underestimated and will require active participation which means good health and a fair degree of fitness. We have a tour to suit what you have in mind, so please do not hesitate to enquire with us.

During an African camping safari you will stay in large two-man dome canvas tents which are spacious enough for two adults and your luggage. Or, you can opt to have your own tent by including the single supplement (valid on select camping tours).

Your tents are put up and taken down easily – your Tour Leader will show you exactly how to do this and help out when you are unsure. All tents are well-ventilated by means of a tent-door and window, covered with mosquito net. They also include a fly-sheet for the rain.

Most camping safaris include a sleeping mat (please do check with us upon enquiry). You need to bring your own sleeping bag, pillow and towel . All meals are prepared at the truck and you will be required to assist with the preparation.

The African campsites are basic and comfortable and you will be able to upgrade your accommodation at most of the places, but this is subject to availability. Most have warm showers and flushing ablutions, while others may have natural ablutions. Some places visited are bush camps where there are no facilities.

Accommodated Tours:

Accommodated safaris are ideal for travellers who prefer to experience African wildlife and adventure with extra comforts. You are surrounded by vast landscapes and wildlife, curiously roaming at your door-step. It is comfort, without the price tag!

Our accommodated safaris make use of a combination of lodges, hostels, bungalows, chalets, permanent safari camps, hotels and traditional huts. Our properties are ideally located at each destination for an authentic experience with incredible views.

We book Twin rooms if you are travelling with a partner or friend and Single rooms for single travellers (including single supplement). Most of the time we stay in 1-3 star properties with en-suite bathrooms in Southern Africa. In Eastern Africa we offer a combination of en-suite and shared bathrooms. In the case of shared bathrooms, you will be sharing with friends on your tour. Please bring your own towels as these are not always provided.

Select accommodated safaris include a camp assistant to help out with the smaller aspects of your vacation.

The standard of the properties varies along the trip. The Southern Africa properties are much more established than the East Africa accommodation. They vary from basic (but comfortable) to lovely properties. Due to the remote nature of the trips, accommodation choices are limited.

Distances and Road Conditions:

Our tours cover long distances so you can see significant amounts of Africa this means that there will be long days spent on the road often with nothing to look at except vast open plains. You can spend between 350km and 650km a day in the truck so it is important to be prepared.

What will you eat on safari?

Our Africa overland vehicles are fully stocked with dry goods at the start of each tour. We buy fresh produce (fruit and vegetables) almost daily to ensure fresh, good quality and tasty meals. Over the summer months fresh produce is not always available due to the heat and humidity, especially in East Africa and Mozambique – so we may have to skip tomatoes from lunch or opt for rice instead of potatoes at dinner.

Each Africa overland camping and accommodated tour include meals as per the itinerary. Often, we may only include breakfast and lunch, allowing you to enjoy dinner at a local market or restaurant. Drinks such as tea, coffee and fruit juice is included with every meal, but exclude bottle water, beer, soft drinks, alcohol etc. – these can be bought en-route or at your campsite bar.

We do cater for most dietary requirements (allergies, vegetarian, lactose-intolerant). Other requirements (gluten-free) may be more challenging on remote routes (i.e. East Africa) where starch is a stable-food in Africa. Please do speak to us about your dietary requirements and we will advise according to your trip. You will be amazed by the variety of tasty meals prepared on an open-fire!

Almost all your meals are pre-prepared over an open campfire or on the gas stove in your overland vehicle. All cooking equipment such as pots, pans, cutlery and crockery is included for you. Excellent hygiene standards are maintained at all times preparing food and washing up of kitchen equipment. Your guides will provide you with a separate washing up basin to wash hands in warm soapy water before and after each meal.

Our camping tours are limited participation tours, whereby we ask you to help out with daily chores (putting up / taking down tents) and help out your guides at meal times (rinsing, chopping vegetables).

So what are the meals like on tour? We have included a few meal options as a guideline:

Tea/coffee and juice + cereals + bread/toast + fruit. Take 2 fruits and keep one for a mid-morning snack. An occasional cooked breakfast (bacon, pancakes, eggs) is made when you have more time to allow for this (normally when you spend 2 nights at the same destination).

Juice + bread + cheese + cold meats + salads + fruit (make a sandwich for a mid-afternoon snack) Juice + fresh rolls + green salad (or rice salad or pasta salad) + fruit.

Tea/coffee and juice + chicken curry + rice, grilled or roast chicken + salad + garlic roll, grilled chicken + vegetables + salad, fish braai + salad, steak + veggies, pasta, stir-fry + rice, casserole, braai (barbeque) + salads + jacket potatoes, soup + fresh rolls.

Tea, coffee and cordial drinks are supplied with meals but other cooldrinks and alcohol can be purchased along the way.

What about children on tour?

  • Due to the nature of overland tours the minimum age limit is 18. Younger travellers (10 to 17) travelling with a parent(s) will be considered on a case-by-case basis depending on the tour, time of travel and tour availability. We do have select tours offering Family Departures, suited for children aged 10 to 17.
  • Privately arranged charter tours’ age limits will be assessed based on the route and type of tour you choose.
  • Please bear in mind that the Gorilla Trekking tours have a minimum age limit of 16 years.

Packing for your tour:

Packing sensibly is essential for your Africa Overland trip. One backpack and one daypack are needed and these can weigh no more than 25kg. A duffel bag is preferable as it will fit into the lockers on the truck, but you can also take a backpack with a compact, flexible, soft shell (without a hard frame). Please do not take suitcases. The airlines implement a 20kg per person limit on international flights for your luggage (your main bag) and a further 5 kg for carry-on luggage (your day bag). A good idea is to include a spare bag for curios that you may purchase, but don’t forget to include this in your weight for your trip home. A moneybelt is a useful item for keeping your money safe and hidden.

Take along comfortable, casual and semi-casual “wash & wear” clothes. Cotton is a good material for when it is hot, and fleece for when it gets cold. Pack clothes that don’t crease easily as the laundry facilities are limited. Find clothes that can be mixed and matched easily and are colour co-ordinated. A great item of clothing is zip-off pants. These double-up as shorts or trousers and are useful for when the weather changes. Reversible clothes are also very convenient and will help to reduce space in your bag.

Safety on Game Drives:

  • When on safari be as quiet as possible at all times and don’t make any sudden movements, this will ensure you don’t disturb the animals and get the most out of your game drive.
  • Do not jump off the truck at any time.

Accommodation (Pre Tour):

Vaccinations:

  • Please ensure you seek medical advice from your travel doctor before visiting Africa.

  • If you are entering a Yellow Fever infected area, you will be required to have a vaccination which can be done at Travel Clinics.
  • Obtain an international Certificate of Vaccination with a valid stamp.
  • Yellow Fever – Valid for 10 years and mandatory for most African countries. It is compulsory to produce a yellow fever certificate when entering Kenya, Zanzibar and Malawi and for taking part in the Gorilla Trek. Failure to present this may result in entry being refused.
  • We also recommend that you ask your doctor about: Typhoid, Tetanus, Hepatitis, Meningitis, Polio, Hepatitis A&B, Cholera
  • Tents have mosquito nets in the vents and it is not generally necessary to bring a separate mosquito net unless you plan to sleep outside, under the stars(in which case you are recommended to bring one)
  • Malaria is transmitted by mosquitoes and is more prevalent in areas where there are high concentrations.
  • Malaria is a serious problem in Africa, but if you are cautious and use mosquito repellent and take your malaria tablets you will be safe.

Main points to keep in mind about malaria: o Cover your skin with long shirts, pants and socks as most mosquito bites occur below the knee. o Make sure your mosquito net is tightly closed and doesn’t have any holes in it. o Use an effective prophylactic and speak to your doctor about options for anti-malarial tablets o Always cover yourself with mosquito repellent, especially at sunset. o Please know that malaria cannot be cured!

  • Dehydration is a common ailment on tour.
  • You should be drinking a minimum of 2 litres of water per day
  • It is preferable to drinking bottled water to avoid diarrhoea, but your guide will advise you as to whether you can drink the water or not.

How others can reach you:

  • The easiest option to keep in touch with your loved ones at home is to buy a SIM card of the respective country you are travelling in.

Photography:

  • You are not permitted to take photographs at the border crossing, government buildings and military institutions.
  • No photographs of the army, police are allowed.
  • Some tribes do not allow their pictures to be taken so please ask your guides before photographing whether it is permissible or not.
  • A fee may have to be paid for photographing the local people.

Crew and Guides

Your tour crew are people with a heart of gold and love living in Africa! With an in-depth knowledge of the local culture, history and wildlife, your crew are committed to ensuring a memorable African overland tour, 24/7.

  • Most overland tours include two crew members (Driver and Tour Leader) working as a team managing tour finances, planning activities, preparing meals and ensure you safely experience Africa.
  • Our larger group overland tours (maximum 26 to 30) include a third crew member (Camp Assistant or Cook or Translator – tour depending).
  • A pre-departure meeting is held the day before your tour, where tour crew will brief you on the nature of your tour and what to expect. At this point they would also collect any local payments needed for your tour.
  • We have select shorter small group tours including one crew member, responsible for driving and tour management. It is perfect for an exclusive, personalised African experience.

The Guides:

  • All overland guides and crew undergo extensive training courses, lectures and field instruction on an on-going basis. Specialised guides are contracted for special interest tours (including school and University group tours) or language tours (Spanish and German) or private overland tours (on request).
  • Although overland guides are trained and qualified, remember they are still human. The nature of their work and duration of overland tours, places an enormous demand on them and can be taxing at times. Please treat them with respect and enjoy getting to know them. They are great people!

Climate and Weather Conditions:

  • The weather in Africa can be unpredictable and extreme so be prepared for this.
  • You can find out the type of weather to expect on your tour from your consultant.
  • Always wear sunscreen from October to April.
  • Temperatures can drop to below zero from June to September.
  • It does rain in Africa!

Street Vendors:

  • Like with any 3rd world country you will encounter informal vendors offering you better rates than the banks. We suggest you don’t work with them for security reasons.
  • Please do not display your foreign currency in public.
  • A valid passport is required for all international travel.
  • Having all the necessary documentation for your trip is your own responsibility therefore you need to find out by your travel agent what the essential documents for the trip are in order to avoid any complications on tour.
  • Passports must be valid for at least 6 months after returning from your trip.
  • In certain cases foreign passport holders require entry, re-entry or departure permits and/or visas to enter a country.
  • Have enough pages for all visas, at least 2 pages free for every country visiting – the Border Security is strict with this rule
  • A copy of your passport should be given to your guides for safety reasons.
  • Must be valid for 6 months after the date of departure from Africa.
  • Avoid using more than one passport to avoid visa payments when travelling
  • Please note that visas are the responsibility of the traveller and African Overland Tours will not be held responsible for the traveller being denied entry should they not be in the possession of the relevant visas.
  • Ensure you have a valid onward/return ticket to leave the country when the tour ends, otherwise you need sufficient funds in your bank account.
  • Visiting the Okavango Delta, you may need a double entry visa for Namibia and or Botswana
  • Botswana Tourism Levy: As of 1 June 2017, Botswana has implemented a tourism levy of US$ 30 per person to be paid in US Dollars cash once you enter.

Medical Insurance:

  • Compulsory! No one will be allowed on a trip if you don’t have this. It is for your safety should anything happen while on tour (especially when in a remote location).

Travel Insurance:

  • It is compulsory to have comprehensive adventure travel insurance, on all overland tours. We require your travel insurance details upon booking your vacation, to include on the passenger list.
  • Most travel insurance policies do not include cover for adrenaline sports and adventure activities. These include white-water rafting, sky diving and bungee jumping. So double check your policy inclusions.
  • WorldNomads Insurance offer adventure travel insurance and, most importantly, cancellation insurance. We strongly recommend your travel insurance includes cancellation and curtailment insurance. The majority of tour departures are guaranteed (confirmed to depart) but in the unlikely event of a tour departure being cancelled, you would be protected.
  • In the case of credit card insurance, we recommend you check the fine print to ensure you have adequate cover as credit card companies offer a standard option. Sometimes, just for a simple problem, you may have to be airlifted to South Africa as many public hospitals in Africa are below western standards.
  • If you choose to use your credit card insurance, you will need to call your bank to obtain your policy details. This is how: • Phone your bank • Give them your Bank Card Number • They will ask you to verify your account • Then you need to ask for the insurance company name • Then you need to ask for the policy number • Remember to keep the telephone number you dialled

Single Supplements:

A single supplement is an additional charge you will pay for your own room. Single supplements are optional on camping tours, but compulsory on accommodated tours if you are a single traveller. Single supplements do not cover Activity Packages.

Optional Activities:

Optional activities are not included in the tour price because not everybody wishes to do them. Sometimes the activities are not available due to time, season or weather conditions

What is a Local Payment?

  • A number of adventure overland tours are made up of a Tour Price + Local Payment.
  • The Tour Price is pre-paid to secure your tour seat and include operational costs associated with each tour, such as; guide salaries, fuel, vehicle servicing, maintenance, road tolls and taxes.
  • The Local Payment is a portion of your overall tour cost paid on the morning of tour departure, in either US Dollars cash or ZA Rand cash (tour depending). It includes “on tour” expenses which cannot ordinarily be pre-paid such as: food, camping, national park entry, included activities.

Activity Package:

  • A selection of tours are made up of a Tour Price + Optional Activity Package.
  • The Tour Price is pre-paid to secure your tour seat and include operational costs associated with each tour, such as; food, camping (or accommodation), national park fees, guide salaries, fuel, vehicle servicing, maintenance, road tolls and taxes.
  • The Optional Activity Package combine the popular activities available on the tour, giving you the option to pre-pay this package (and so carry less cash while travelling) or; you can pay it on the morning of departure to your Tour Guide in ZA Rand cash.
  • Activity packages are optional 98% of the time and covers what we consider to be ‘essential activities’ on the tours.
  • It is more convenient to pay these upon your arrival or on the first day of the tour.
  • If you do not pre-book a particular activity it may not be available and you may be disappointed.

Money Matters:

  • Your spending money, visas and optional activities needs to consist of a combination of Cash and Traveller Cheques in the currency quoted (tour specific). Credit cards are only accepted at some places (mostly larger cities) and throughout South Africa.
  • Visas are not accepted in East Africa.
  • In Southern and East Africa, additional credit card surcharges from 5% to 8% may be charged when using your card. It is best to use it only in case of emergency.
  • US Dollars, GB Sterling, Euro and select international currencies are used within Africa, with US Dollar being the most popular. You will find food, taxi, accommodation and optional activity prices are all quoted in US Dollars.
  • US Dollars cash notes must be issued POST 2005. No notes pre-dated are accepted due to fraudulent notes rife in East Africa. You can pre-order US Cash notes from your local bank or foreign exchange office prior to arriving in Africa.
  • It is best to bring a combination of larger denominations (USD100 and USD50) to pay for your Local Payment and smaller denominations (USD50, UDS20, USD 10 and USD5) for spending money, visas and optional activities.
  • ATMs are found throughout South Africa and other major towns and cities through Africa. However, you may not have access to an ATM for a few days, or they may be out of order. Please note that when drawing money from a local ATM, you will receive local currency. In Zimbabwe the ATM’s limit the amount of USD that can be withdrawn (it ranges from 50 USD – 200 USD a day).
  • ZAR is mostly used in South Africa and Namibia. We recommend USD for Botswana, Mozambique, Livingstone and Victoria Falls area.

Credit Cards:

  • Most of the major Southern and East African cities do have credit card facilities available however they may charge you a surcharge to use the facility.
  • Visa and Mastercard are the two most widely used accepted credit cards in Africa, while diners or American Express may not always be accepted

Banking facilities:

  • There are full banking facilities in the major towns based on weekly business hours. Here you can change money and withdraw cash from a credit card. Visa and Master Card are preferential, as other cards may not be widely accepted.
  • It is recommended to tip for various activities on tour – we suggest a tip of 1-3 euro (or whichever local currency is acceptable) per client, per half day activity.
  • Tipping your tour leader is also highly recommended as he / she works really hard to ensure you have the best experience on your tour. A tip of 2 – 5 Euros per client per day is a reasonable fair.
  • The amounts quoted above are only guidelines for the clients.

Departure Tax:

  • Various countries require you to pay an Airport Departure Tax (Zimbabwe is one) when departing on an international flight.
  • Varies from US$10 – US$60 depending on the departure time
  • The truck has a safe for passports, money, credit cards and flight tickets only!
  • Keep your cameras, cell phones, iPad’s and other digital equipment close to you at all times (preferably in your day pack) as the operator will not be held responsible for anything that goes missing.
  • Leave your valuables at home!
  • Be vigilant and cautious at all times.
  • Always walk in a group, especially at night.
  • It is advisable to have travel insurance for your personal items.

Quality and Protection:

  • We are proudly bonded SATSA members. Our membership number is 1712.
  • We are also insured by SATIB.
  • SATSA is the Southern Africa Tourism Services Association and offers protection to international travellers against the possible loss of deposits (or monies paid) to a SATSA member (tour operator, car rental company, accommodation provider etc.), in case of liquidation. It is underwritten by Lombard Insurance and Lloyds of London.
  • SATSA is the driving force behind improving standards of tourism in South Africa, as offered by its various members (tour operators, car rental companies, accommodation provider etc.).
  • “Should a SATSA member who is a South African tourism business operation, run into financial problems, the bonding scheme allows the client to claim back their deposit without having to prove in a court or to the liquidator whom or what was paid, but simply to produce the relevant documentation to SATSA.” – Michael Tatalias, CEO SATSA.
  • Satsa Bonding Offers financial protection on all monies paid.

Luxury & Private Mozambique Safaris

Mozambique is a large country with a unique blend of Portuguese and African styles. Its history lays claim to pirates, slavers, and ivory traders while the colonial architecture, marimba bands, and local music provide a touch of drama to the towns.

Mozambique is all about the beaches, fresh seafood, fishing , snorkeling , and diving . Wild, beautiful, hot, and sandy, this is the perfect place to unwind, unplug your gadgets, and soak up the sun. No matter what your desired level of activity, sundowner dhow rides are the perfect way to end your day in paradise.

Southern Mozambique offers polished beach accommodation along with some more wild coastline further towards South Africa . Northern Mozambique’s isolated islands and coastline offer a more remote and barefoot luxury experience. Mozambique’s Gorongosa National Park has a handful of eco-lodges in the works to open and the game is being habituated. Once ready, travelers will also have a traditional safari experience, making Mozambique more than just a beach destination.

Northern Mozambique combines well with East Africa, and the south can be easily added to a southern Africa safari itinerary. Mozambique’s extensive coastline takes in varying degrees of latitude, making it a year-round destination and the perfect way to end your safari.

What to expect on a luxury Mozambique safari

  • Mozambique: Luxury & Private Safaris:  Mozambique is a casual and relaxed beach destination, ideal for  diving  enthusiasts and those who want an uncomplicated end to their safari. Service speeds are on “island time,” even at the higher-end properties.
  • Memorable accommodations : Many properties in Mozambique err on the side of barefoot or eco-luxury and are often open to the elements. Even five-star luxury lodges may be without air-conditioning. This is not universally true and there are properties that can meet the needs of travelers looking for polished luxury rooms, but eco-luxury is the general trend.
  • Mozambique game viewing:  If your priority is game viewing, the reserves in Mozambique may not quite meet your needs. They cannot compete with parks in  Kenya ,  Tanzania ,  Botswana  or  South Africa  for density of game and ease of sightings. Mozambique’s advantage is that there is a low density of vehicles so it will feel very remote.
  • Getting around Mozambique:  The country is quite large and many of the beach properties are on islands off the coast, which increases the likelihood of spending time in a small plane. For travelers who don’t enjoy flying, then Mozambique might not be the right choice.

Mozambique travel tips

  • There is a Pemba, Tanzania, and a Pemba, Mozambique—take care not to confuse the two.
  • Dive around Inhambane  for mega-fauna like whales and manta rays.
  • Go diving in the Quirimbas  for pristine coral.
  • Ilha de Moçambique  is a UNESCO site and worth a visit.

Mozambique FAQs

It would be easy to spend a week in Mozambique, especially if you’re a diving enthusiast or on a honeymoon. When visiting as a beachy add-on to a luxury South Africa safari itinerary, four nights gives you enough time to slow into the destination.

Mozambique is a malaria endemic country and visitors are at risk of contracting the mosquito-transmitted disease.

The  CDC recommends that travelers going to certain areas of Mozambique take prescription medicine to prevent malaria. Consult your doctor to assess which antimalarial is the best option for you.

If you add Mozambique on to a safari you will almost certainly have to fly into Pemba or Vilanculous and then take a road or helicopter transfer. Among the properties we favor, White Pearl  is one of the few that you can reach via road from South Africa.

Mozambique is quite a large and many of the beach properties are located on islands off the coast, which increases the likelihood of spending time in a small plane. For travelers who don’t enjoy flying, then Mozambique might not be the right choice.

As a beach destination Mozambique offers exclusive luxury in remote areas. Naturally, this exclusivity and luxury comes at a premium.

You’ll find easier on the wallet options if you stay on the mainland, and the more luxury spots will be found a helicopter away on island like the Bazaruto Archipelago.

The scuba diving in Mozambique is considered some of the best in the world.

The north (Quirimbas) offers gorgeous coral reefs, and the south (Inhambane, especially) provides sightings of humpback whales, reef sharks and manta rays. Bazaruto has a bit of both.

Depending on where you stay, you’re offered everything from shallow reef dive sites to those up to 30 meters in depth. Strict PADI standards are always adhered to and you can always do an introductory PADI “discovery” class to test out the diving experience.

If you are traveling to Mozambique specifically for the diving , we recommend going between July and October.

When is the best time to visit Mozambique?

Depending whether you go to the north or the south, Mozambique can be a year-round destination. January through March/April are the hottest and wettest months and there is always a good chance of rain. But we wouldn’t rule these months out altogether, especially if you are staying as long as a week. It won’t likely ruin your Mozambique safari, but be prepared for rain.

If you are traveling to Mozambique specifically for the diving , we recommend going between July and October. The humpback whales migrate into the Mozambique waters during that time, so if you have your heart set of viewing these magnificent creatures, time your vacation accordingly.

In addition, the south ( Bazaruto , Inhambane , Ponta Mamoli ) can have heavy rainfall and even cyclones on certain parts of the coast between January and March. In the north (the Quirimbas , Ilha de Mozambique ) the rainiest time of year is more closely aligned with the rains in East Africa, between March and May. Of course there is annual variation and in theory it could rain for a day or two at any time of year.

Because it is so easily accessible from South Africa , Southern Mozambique gets very busy during the South African holiday seasons, mainly December to January and the Easter Holidays. If you want to avoid the masses, then perhaps look at traveling out of these periods.

What are the best things to do in Mozambique?

Mozambique is well suited to travelers interested in water activities, marine life, and gorgeous beaches. Scuba diving ,  snorkeling ,  fishing ,  dhow sundowners ,  kayaking , or simply relaxing on the beach are the best ways to fully experience some of the coastal regions of Mozambique:  Ponta Amoli ,  Inhambane , and  Quirimbas .

Game-viewing in Mozambique will hopefully be successful in Gorongosa with an increase in visitors and further habituation of the animals. The safari experience can be an enjoyable one because of the lack of crowds, but you do need to search a little harder for the animals. You won’t trip over them as you would in Kenya and Tanzania .

Maputo and the other Mozambique towns are historically fascinating. The architecture, museums, markets, bars, and cafes can best be explored on foot or on guided walking tours.

Wildlife in Mozambique

Gorongosa is home to big cats, elephant, hippo, crocodile, a wide variety of antelope and smaller animals such as civets, genets, and cerval. However, the game-viewing is just not as dense or prolific as in other parts of Africa.

In terms of wildlife, Mozambique’s big draw is its marine life. Depending on where you are and the time of year you can see manta rays, sea turtles, dolphins, turtles, humpback whales, whale sharks, reef sharks, hammerheads, enormous grouper, barracuda, snapper, and tuna. The southern waters are good for seeing these larger creatures while the northern waters are rich with beautiful coral reefs.

Where to go on a luxury trip to Mozambique

  • The northern  Quirimbas Archipelago  is known for its healthy coral reefs.
  • Inhambane  is known for big fish, sharks, whales and more technical deep-water dives.
  • Bazaruto  has a bit of both and has the most polished luxury properties.
  • While safaris and game-viewing aren’t Mozambique’s strength, we are watching Gorongosa National Park as eco-friendly lodges are being built for a few days of remote, uncrowded game-viewing if you are coming from a more crowded safari destination like  Kruger .

Mozambique nestles in the south-eastern corner of Africa and boasts a gorgeous stretch of pristine coastline and the warm Indian Ocean. Dotted with white sand beaches, coral islands, and protected marine parks; Mozambique is perfect for a tropical beach vacation and is easily combined with a big five safari experience in South Africa.

Travelers can explore the bustling city of Maputo , or the palm-fringed islands of Ponta De Ouro , Bilene , Xai-Xai , Inhambane , Vilanculos , Bazaruto Island , Benguerra Island , Pemba , and the Quirimbas Archipelago . Whichever exotic destination you choose, you can look forward to a vacation full of adventure. Mozambique is the ultimate destination for snorkeling, sunset cruises, horse-riding, dolphin tours, scuba diving, and basking in the sun.

Catering to solo explorers, couples, and families; Mozambique boasts a wide selection of world-class hotels, lodges and resorts that afford gorgeous ocean views, exceptional hospitality, and sumptuous Mozambiquean cuisine.

The question of when to travel to Mozambique depends on many things including your interests, exactly where you want to visit and why you're going.

The country broadly follows South Africa’s weather pattern, with the rains falling largely between December and March .

This does vary a little between the north and south of the country, with the rains lasting a few weeks longer in the north than the south, but the pattern is the same. Humidity can be uncomfortably high during this period.

By around April or May the rains subside, the sun comes out and the humidity drops – better weather spreads gradually from the south to the north.

June to October is the dry season, with often perfect tropical weather: clear skies, plenty of sun and almost no rain. This is the best time for most people to visit Mozambique. Although still tropical, June, July and August are Mozambique's coolest months; you'll need a light duvet at night, even though the temperature reaches over 30°C by day. During September and October it remains dry as daytime temperatures climb, though it cools down a lot at night.

November is a less predictable month of transition. Sometimes the rains start, although many days remain sunny and hot. The rains generally start earlier in the north of the country.

Mozambique has become a favorite beach and island holiday destination. The warm, crystal blue water of the Indian Ocean makes it ideal for big game fishing, safaris, scuba diving and romantic getaways.

Two clusters of islands on the horizon include the Bazaruto Archipelago and the Quirimbas Archipelago – perfect for slowing down and enjoying the easy pace of island life, fresh seafood and sunset cruises aboard a traditional Dhow.

There’s more to Mozambique than laid-back island living, it also offers a plethora of big game, with the game reserves being a popular choice for safari, including the beautiful Gorongosa National Park.

Ponta do Ouro

Ponta do Ouro is a town in the extreme south of Mozambique, lying on the Mozambique Channel south of Maputo and just north of the border with South Africa. It is known for its beach, for its dolphins and for its offshore diving and deep-sea fishing. Must see attractions include a small shop called Ponki which sells authentic hand-woven kikois at affordable prices and the bustling downtown market. Fresh seafood is displayed in colorful cooler boxes and you can buy enormous crayfish, lobsters, prawns, and fish.

Maputo is the fascinating capital city of Mozambique. With its Portuguese colonial heritage, its vibrant residents, bustling markets and its delicious seafood cuisine, there are plenty of tourist attractions for everyone in Maputo. Must see attractions include the Natural History Museum, the Old Portuguese Fort, Inhaca and Portuguese Islands accessible by ferry, the Maputo Elephant Reserve, and the beautiful Maputo Central Railway Station which was designed by Gustave Eiffel.

Vilanculos is a small, vibrant, coastal town 700 kilometers from the Mozambique capital, Maputo. It boasts a new international airport and is the gateway to the idyllic offshore island of Bazaruto Archipelagos. Vilanculos is a piece of paradise with dazzling powder-white beaches, coconut palms, crystal blue waters, superb all-year-round temperate climate and is the perfect hideaway for a holiday that offers a perfect mix of relaxation and adventure. Adventure comes in so many forms – best marlin fishing in the world, snorkeling, boating, diving, kite surfing and just good old swimming. Dhow sailboat trips and motorboat trips are offered by many to fulfill your adrenaline rush or provide the amazing opportunity of swimming with dolphins or sea turtles.Vilanculos is just pure bliss!

Tofo is a coastal town in southeastern Mozambique, near the town of Inhambane. It's known for the curved Tofo Beach and nearby coral reefs which attract sea life. Sea turtles and huge manta rays circle at Manta Reef. Tofo is one of the best destinations for divers to see whale sharks and is a surfers paradise. Discover the small African street market where you can buy fresh produce and small odds and ends. If you are an angler, go fishing for King Mackerel, Dorado, Wahoo, Bonito and Yellowfin Tuna during peak season from June to August. Or hire a horse from the stables and ride along the beach in warm sea breezes. Alternatively laze on the beach all day swimming, tanning and reading long novels.

Bazaruto Archipelago

The Bazaruto Archipelago consists of six idyllic islands lying off the Mozambique coastal town of Vilankulo (Vilanculos): Bazaruto, Benguerra, Magaruque, Santa Carolina (Paradise Island), Bangue and Pansy Shell Island. Mozambique Holidays to the Archipelago are some of the best on the African continent. Renowned as the “Pearl of the Indian Ocean” the Bazaruto Archipelago offers exclusive accommodation options, relaxation, and incredible sunrises and sunsets. The Bazaruto Archipelago is a protected Marine National Park with unique habitats and species; a paradise for divers who will discover groups of dolphin, humpback whales, whale sharks, sharks, manta rays and turtles.

Bazaruto Island

Bazaruto Island lies in Bazaruto National Park, off the coast of southern Mozambique. Resorts dot the island’s white beaches, and it’s known for marine life like turtles and dugong. The clear waters of Two Mile Reef are filled with colorful fish, reef sharks, and moray eels, while the deeper area in Indigo Bay is home to sailfish and marlin. Traditional dhow boats run to nearby islands Santa Carolina and Benguerra. Bazaruto Island is ideal for honeymooners with only three resorts occupying the island.

Benguerra Island

Benguerra Island in Mozambique is the second largest island in the Bazaruto Archipelago, which broke away from the mainland thousands of years ago. Benguerra Island is approximately 55 square kilometers in extent, ensuring guests ample privacy within this idyllic paradise. The Island declared a National Park in 1971 sustains a diverse population of fauna and flora including forest, savannah and wetland ecosystems. Benguerra Island offers pristine beaches and unspoiled coral reefs teeming with marine life. Benguerra is an underwater wonderland for divers, with a rich variety of tropical fish species complemented by Africa’s only population of the rare dugong. The deep Mozambique Channel, which runs alongside the island, is renowned for its game fish and Benguerra Island offers some of the world’s best catch-and-release deep sea fishing and fly fishing opportunities.

Quirimbas Islands

Stretching more than 100 kilometers along the Indian Ocean, The Quirimbas Archipelago is set just off the northern coast of Mozambique. Many of its islands are part of Quirimbas National Park, which is known for coral reefs and waters inhabited by dolphins, whales and endangered dugongs (sea cows). Secluded Matemo, Medjumbe, and Vamizi islands have long beaches and phenomenal dive sites. Mangrove-covered Ibo Island features colonial-era ruins, including forts.  The Quirimbas Islands offer unique, unspoiled accommodation choices for visitors all year round.

The ultimate Mozambique holiday destination, Ibo Island has a lost world appeal and a rich history - an island that was once a trading post for slaves and ivory. Meet the people of Ibo, a fascinating cultural blend of European, Indian, Arabic and Chinese. They still follow and respect old Mozambique tribal customs and tribal religions on this historical island. On Ibo Island you can experience fully guided, tailor-made, mobile island hopping dhow and kayak safaris. It is the best way to explore the exotic islands, pristine mangroves, and exquisite coral reefs. It is also an ideal location to savor the incredible experience of swimming with wild dolphins in their natural environment or indulge in a private castaway picnic in a deserted tropical paradise known as Mogundula Island.

Matemo Island

Surrounded by white sandy beaches and the deep blue ocean, Matemo Island is located in the beautiful Quirimbas Archipelago in Mozambique. Matemo Island offers the warm Indian Ocean, spectacular sunsets, unspoiled beaches, as well as the incredible world of marine life that inhabits the Quirimbas National Park. The beautiful and protected tropical waters around Matemo Island are known as one of Mozambique's best-kept secrets. Diving is the ideal way to discover the magnificent marine ecosystem. The area is well known to offer some of the most spectacular fishing in the world. Other activities include snorkeling, sailing, waterskiing, windsurfing, and kayaking.

Pemba Island, known as "The Green Island" in Arabic, is an island forming part of the Zanzibar Archipelago, lying within the Swahili Coast in the Indian Ocean. Pemba is a popular tourist destination for water sport and diving enthusiasts. Pemba Bay forms a huge harbor and stunning coral reefs lie close to shore providing wonderful diving and snorkeling adventures. The surrounding landscape of the bay is characterized by forests of Baobab trees growing down to the shoreline. Dhow safaris are also a highlight and popular way to sail around the bay and beyond.

Gorongosa National Park

Gorongosa National Park is a preserved area in the Great Rift Valley of central Mozambique and has been the featured park for several National Geographic documentaries. A successful conservation story - Gorongosa’s forests and savannahs are home to lions, hippos, and elephants. Lake Urema and its surrounding wetlands and rivers attract scores of water birds. The multi-tiered Murombodzi Falls spills over jagged rocks on the slopes of Mount Gorongosa. Limestone gorges and bat-filled caves define Cheringoma Plateau. Garongosa offers open vehicle game drives through a diversity of habitat, wildlife, and outstanding birdlife. You will have the opportunity to look over spectacular floodplains and explore mystical fever tree and palm forests whilst searching for the resident wildlife. A remarkable diversity of antelope, numerous primates, and great birdlife are always encountered. With a bit of luck, you could find lions, large elephant herds, buffalo, hippopotamus and some really enormous crocodiles.

Experienced a double booking
Before payment, we experienced an issue of double booking, where suddenly our chosen lodging is only available for 2 out of 4 days. I hope Safari.com can improve their system to avoid this in the future. While it will be an inconvenience on our part to have to move lodging half way, we also understand the high demand of the lodging as we make the booking just 5 months before departure. I really appreciate Nelia's quick action informing us and providing an alternative plan which works for us. Overall it was quite a smooth booking process.

Dear Jayson, You are a star. The very professional pieces of advice and the optimal design of the schedule that turned our holidays into an extraordinary experience. Thank you so much! Leopard Hills are indeed the boutique luxury camp that you recommended. People there are incredible friendly and knowledgable. The guide was excellent. And the cook, she was a friendly star too. The flight connections went well, despite that rather long drive, and the very early morning start. Wake up calls at 4 AM should be forbidden :) Mauritius was great, Club Med The Plantation Albion was the perfect choice. (The other Club Med @ Cannonier we visited only and were glad we didn’t chose that one…) Thank you again for the superb organisation.

When to visit Mozambique

The best time to visit Mozambique for safaris and beaches is during the dry season, which runs from May to October. During this time, the weather is mild, and rainfall is minimal, making it ideal for outdoor activities such as game drives, beach excursions, and water sports. In Mozambique's wildlife reserves, such as Gorongosa National Park and Niassa Reserve, the dry season is an excellent time for game viewing as animals congregate around water sources, making them easier to spot.

The dry season is also an ideal time for walking safaris and birdwatching as the foliage is less dense, and bird species are more active. For beach vacations, Mozambique's dry season provides warm and sunny weather with clear blue skies, perfect for relaxing on the beach, swimming, and diving. The country's coastline and islands offer some of the most pristine beaches and stunning coral reefs in the world, with a variety of water sports and activities available.

It's important to note that Mozambique can be very hot and humid during the wet season, which runs from November to April, and some areas can become inaccessible due to heavy rains and flooding. It's best to plan your safari and beach vacation during the dry season to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience.

The Ilha de Moçambique is a historical gem and a wonderfully laid-back slice of heaven. The Mozambique island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its cultural and architectural significance, notably its fine 16th-century fort and associated chapel.

It’s the island, not the mainland, that first took the name ‘Mozambique,’ derived from the sultan Ali Musa Mbiki who was the ruler in the late 15th century.

When the Portuguese arrived and drove the sultan out, they established an outpost that would dominate the Mozambique region for nearly four hundred years.

capela de nossa senhora mozambique architecture

Eventually, the mainland assumed the name of this European base, and when the bulk of trade shifted south to Maputo, the Island of Mozambique faded from the world stage.

A holiday to Mozambique Island is a perfect opportunity to relax and learn about East African culture and history.

The Island of Mozambique is the oldest European settlement in East Africa. The Chapel of Nossa Senhora de Baluarte (Our Lady of the Ramparts) is thought to be the oldest European building south of the equator.

The chapel dates to 1522 and is protected by the impressive limestone Fort of São Sebastião.

The fort was completed in the second half of the 16th century and saw off several major attacks, most notably by the Dutch in 1607 and 1608.

The São Paulo Palace Museum is fascinating, as are the Sacred Art and Maritime Museums.

coral reef mozambique diving holiday

To top off these more cultural pursuits, there are sea-kayaking trips, excellent snorkeling and diving , and boat-based humpback whale watching.

Travel Tips

  • The Island of Mozambique is not easy to get to. It’s in the country’s far north, and the roads can be slow.
  • The closest airport to Mozambique Island, at Nacala, is a two-hour drive to the north, and the international airport at Nampula is about three hours’ drive inland.
  • Mozambique Island’s upmarket hotels will arrange all necessary transfers, but if you’re on a tighter budget, prepare for an adventure.
  • Regional buses and taxis only cost a few dollars, but you may have to switch between them en route.
  • When you arrive on Mozambique Island, you’ll find many hotels, from breezy romantic suites to family resorts and affordable backpackers.
  • There are cash machines on the island, and the more prominent hotels accept credit cards.
  • Everywhere you stroll on your Mozambique Island holiday, you’ll feel completely safe, day and night.

Gorongosa National Park

A diverse and beautiful area that has recently opened up to visitors - come here for a fantastic wilderness experience of water and walking rather than for prolific wildlife.

Gorongosa National Park was once a superb game viewing destination. Before the onset of the civil war in the 1970s, it was considered one of Africa's finest parks, with large populations of herbivores and predators. However, Gorongosa's game populations were hugely affected by the troubles Mozambique suffered, and it is only in recent years that a restoration project has been put in place to re-establish the park and its game viewing. The Carr Foundation, a U.S. not-for-profit organization, has teamed with the Government of Mozambique to protect and restore the ecosystem of Gorongosa National Park and to develop an ecotourism industry to benefit local communities.

When to go to Gorongosa National Park

Our month by month guide: What it's like to visit Gorongosa in Mozambique

Mozambique in January

January is one of the wettest, hottest and most humid months in Mozambique, with average daytime temperatures reaching the low 30s °C, dropping only to around 24°C at night. Although the rain falls mostly as tropical downpours in late afternoon/evening, with the rest of the time sunny, there are definitely better times to visit. Diving is generally good, but visibility can be limited. Dolphins are abundant, but humpback whales have moved out and this is the last month with a reasonable chance of spotting whale sharks and manta rays. On beaches, turtles lay their eggs and by the end of the month some are beginning to hatch. After the busy Christmas/New Year period lodges are almost empty, so it’s a good time to avoid the “crowds”.

  • One of the wettest & hottest months, with high humidity
  • Diving is fair but visibility can be poor
  • Great for dolphin viewing
  • Turtles laying eggs, which begin to hatch by end of month
  • The low season so lodges much quieter, but for a reason

A time to avoid if possible

Weather in January

Mozambique in February

The hot, wet weather continues, with rainfall at its peak in February in the south, and temperatures as high as those experienced in January; this is also the start of the cyclone season. Such storms are relatively rare but when they do occur they bring widespread devastation and disruption. Although the sea is wonderfully warm, beaches can be pretty windy and diving at this time of the year can be more challenging, with choppier waters and sometimes pretty poor visibility. As such, lodges tend to have good availability. The chances of seeing manta rays and whale sharks are minimal now, but turtles are still laying eggs followed by hatchlings making a dash for the ocean.

  • Rain & hot weather peaks, as does the humidity
  • Start of the cyclone season
  • Diving conditions can be more challenging
  • Great month for turtle watching

Weather in February

Mozambique in March

Rainfall is still high, peaking in the north – where it continues for longer than in the south – and the threat of tropical cyclones remains (2019 saw Idai wreak havoc). Temperatures fall ever so slightly but it’s still hot, with daily temperatures averaging 30°C and nights around 23°C. It’s still pretty humid but this begins to drop away towards the end of the month when the weather generally starts to improve. Diving, as in previous months, can be OK with warm seas, but conditions are unpredictable, and visibility is still only fair. Of the key marine species, only dolphins are now regularly seen and the last of the turtle hatchlings make for the sea. Availability is usually good, but when Easter falls in March, lodges can get booked up early.

  • Rainfall eases but still a chance of significant downpours
  • Cyclones remain a threat
  • Diving is reasonable, but visibility can be hit and miss
  • Turtle spotting excellent
  • Although low season, Easter can get booked up quickly

This is not a great time to visit

Weather in March

Mozambique in April

Although rain still lingers in the north, the rainy season in the south draws to an end. Temperatures are still high but as the rain peters out, humidity drops considerably and so it feels much more comfortable. There is still a small risk of tropical cyclones (as in 2019, when cyclone Kenneth hit), but these are usually extremely rare. Diving conditions improve with increased visibility and the sea is still warm, so April can be a lovely month for diving or a beach holiday. It is also excellent for fishing, with most of the game fish species being present. Lodges begin to see more visitors and can get especially busy over Easter.

  • Rainy season comes to an end in the south
  • Good weather for a beach holiday sets in
  • Diving, improves with increased visibility & warm seas
  • Excellent fishing conditions
  • Visitor numbers begin to increase, especially around Easter

A good time to visit, with pros & cons

Weather in April

Mozambique in May

As the rains cease in the north, May marks the start of the dry season across Mozambique (although the odd freak cyclone has been known to make landfall, this is exceptional). The days are warm and sunny, with low humidity and temperatures around 27°C, while evenings start to cool to around 16°C. It’s a really good month to visit coastal areas and as such the lodges get a bit busier and prices start to rise. Diving continues to improve with good visibility and calm waters, and the excellent game fishing conditions continue. Lastly, Mozambique’s biggest international music festival, Azgo, takes place in Maputo during May.

  • Start of the dry season: virtually no rainfall & humidity drops
  • Diving continues to improve with good visibility & calm seas
  • Excellent fishing conditions continue
  • Azgo international music festival in Maputo
  • Lodges get busier & prices increase

A very good time to visit

Weather in May

Mozambique in June

Good weather continues with pleasantly warm days, clear skies and a bit of a breeze – ideal for a relaxing beach holiday. Diving conditions are near perfect with good visibility, though note that sea temperatures are dropping by a couple of degrees. Southern right whales start appearing along the coastline. The excellent deep-sea fishing continues. On Ibo Island in the Quirimbas Archipelago, 24 June sees the Feast of St John the Baptist – celebrated as Kueto Siriwala (“to not forget your roots”) day. Expect dhow races as well as traditional music and dance. Lodges are getting busier and with Mozambique’s month-long summer holiday beginning in late June, it’s advisable to book well in advance. This is one of the best months and prices increase, reflecting the move into this peak season.

  • Weather now very good
  • Southern right whales start appearing along the coast
  • Diving conditions are superb
  • Kueto Siriwala festival on Ibo
  • Lodges getting busier & therefore prices higher

Fantastic: the very best time to visit

Weather in June

Mozambique in July

The dry season is now in full swing so clear blue skies abound. Warm, sunny days and cool evenings continue, with average temperatures between 25°C during the day and 16°C at night. July is definitely one of the best months to visit the Mozambique coast, though beaches can be a little windy. Humpback whales begin making their long annual migration from Antarctica to the warmer waters off East Africa to calve; if you’re lucky you may get to see them, especially at the end of the month. Diving and snorkelling conditions are reaching optimum levels with generally excellent visibility, though the water is now chilly by Mozambique standards. Fishing is still very good for most game species. Lodges are filling up due to northern hemisphere school holidays.

  • Warm sunny days & cool evenings
  • Diving conditions now almost perfect
  • Humpback whales begin arriving
  • Fishing still very good
  • School holiday time, so lodges are filling up

Weather in July

Mozambique in August

As in July, the days are lovely and warm – great for lying on a beach, though there’s a slight chill to the evenings and the sea is at its coolest at around 16°C. This is one of the best times to visit Mozambique, and is a great month for diving as visibility now reaches its peak, but it can be a bit windy. Humpback whale numbers are increasing, and manta rays and whale sharks start to appear, though are not a common sighting. Fishing drops off a bit but some species such as sailfish and queen mackerel are still taking bait. August is very popular – probably the busiest month – so lodges can be quite full and family-friendly resorts will have more children around.

  • Days still nice & warm with cooler, but pleasant evenings
  • Optimal diving conditions.
  • Whales numbers increase; the odd manta ray & whale shark may be seen
  • Fishing starts to tail off a little
  • Lodges at high occupancy levels, so can be busy

Weather in August

Mozambique in September

In September, temperatures begin to climb and warm, sunny days continue, although evenings are still cooler (averaging around 28°C in the day and 19°C at night); this is historically the driest month in Mozambique. Whale watching is getting even better as numbers increase and, as in August, diving and snorkelling conditions are excellent with great visibility. Sightings of whale sharks and manta rays begin to increase, and while dolphins are seen throughout the year, September is the start of the best dolphin-viewing period. The fishing is good with marlin, sailfish and kingfish all possibilities. Although the school holidays have ended it is still high season and still a popular month – it’s our favourite month here.

  • Arguably our favourite month
  • Temperatures start rising – the weather is beautiful
  • Superb diving & snorkelling conditions continue
  • Sightings of whale sharks & mantas rays pick up
  • Great for dolphin viewing & whales still present in good numbers

Weather in September

Mozambique in October

October is the hottest of the dry months with daytime temperatures peaking at around 30°C and evenings feeling balmy at around 20°C. With the heat building, the rains can begin right at the end of the month. The fishing is very good, especially for the bigger game fish like marlin. October is also considered the best month for whale watching, and one of the best for dolphins, which are present in good numbers. The chances of seeing whale sharks and manta rays also increase as the seas warm up; this, and the next two months, are best for sightings. Like August and September, October is also excellent for diving and snorkelling, with superb visibility, thus it’s another popular month, and carries peak season prices.

  • Hottest of the dry months
  • Excellent whale & dolphin watching
  • Chances of seeing whale sharks & mantas increase
  • Diving conditions remain excellent
  • Fishing for certain game fish species is very good

Weather in October

Mozambique in November

As the dry season ends and the wet season starts, the weather becomes a lot more unpredictable. Days are very hot with humidity increasing, though rainfall is still fairly low. November heralds the return of turtles coming ashore to nest and lay their eggs. With visibility still pretty clear, diving and snorkelling conditions remain good. There is still a decent chance of seeing humpback whales before they begin heading off towards the end of the month, whilst sightings of whale sharks and manta rays remain good, and dolphin sightings excellent. Fishing for certain species, especially kingfish and marlin, remains excellent. It’s no longer high season so prices of some lodges come down.

  • Days hot but weather becomes a somewhat unpredictable
  • Diving still good
  • Start of the turtle-nesting season; humpback whales begin to leave
  • Good month for dolphins, whale sharks & mantas
  • Lodge prices starting to come down

Weather in November

Mozambique in December

Days are still hot, with rising humidity making it feel a lot stickier. Average daytime temperatures hit 31°C+, with evenings around 23°C. December is one of the rainiest months, but expect short sharp thunderstorms as opposed to lengthy rainfall. The turtle-nesting season is now in full swing, so seeing females laying their eggs becomes a possibility. As humpback whales head back south, sightings become scarce, but dolphins, whale sharks and manta rays are still present in good numbers. Fishing for marlin, bonito and kingfish is still excellent. Sea visibility is generally good, but it can become a little hit and miss as the sun and warm seas encourage plankton blooms. Christmas and New Year are very popular periods despite invariably carrying price supplements.

  • Days are hot & a lot more humid
  • Turtles laying their eggs on beaches
  • Whale season is now largely over
  • Dolphins, whale sharks & mantas are still present
  • Christmas & New Year get booked up early, & cost more

Idyllic island of the mist

Africa Geographic Stories & Galleries

Thursday, 10 November 2022

africa safari mozambique

Picture the scene: you’ve spent the day exploring the azure waters of a marine sanctuary, suspended in the amniotic embrace of the Indian Ocean and marvelling at encounters with its enigmatic residents. Sun-kissed and slightly salty, you sip a cocktail (of a suitably lurid colour) and watch the hues of the sky and sand as Africa delivers one of her speciality sunsets . Mozambique’s Bazaruto Archipelago has all the ingredients of a sublime safari, albeit ocean-themed: fascinating creatures, breathtaking scenery, and exceptional biodiversity.

africa safari mozambique

Bazaruto Archipelago National Park

Bazaruto Archipelago National Park spans a vast 1,260km²  (126,000 hectares) off the coastline of Mozambique, encompassing five islands, diverse coral reefs and critical marine habitats . Declared a protected area in 1971, Bazaruto (meaning ‘island of the mist’) is the country’s oldest marine park. Three of the five islands are home to a tiny rural population of some 5,000 people, who survive predominantly through subsistence farming and harvesting the archipelago’s natural resources.

The eponymous Bazaruto Island is the largest of the islands by a substantial margin. I ts eastern edge is dominated by enormous and ancient dunes , while the interior is pockmarked by inland lakes and wetlands, home to crocodiles and abundant birdlife. Benguerra and Magaruque Islands to the south are similarly structured on a smaller scale. Santa Caroline (also known as Paradise Island – for good reason) is the only true volcanic island, uninhabited and positioned between Bazaruto and the mainland. Finally, tiny Banque Island (and its satellite Pansy Shell Island) occupies the southernmost tip of the park – little more than a stretch of sand.

Each of the five islands has a unique character, but all share the same fundamentals: long stretches of the white sandy beaches for which Mozambique is renowned and a cornucopia of life in the seas around them.

Mozambique islands

Bazaruto’s picture-perfect beaches roll on as far as the eye can see. This profusion of natural resources paved the way for abuse through overuse, illegal fishing practices, poaching and poorly regulated tourism activities, which threatened Bazaruto’s rare and endemic marine life. Fortunately, the park became the first marine reserve to fall under the management auspices of African Parks in 2017 when they partnered with Mozambique’s National Administration of Conservation Areas to protect the country’s sapphire treasure.

africa safari mozambique

The non-profit organisation immediately set about securing the region, clamping down on illegal fishing and turtle poaching, and intercepting commercial fishing vessels. To ensure the park’s long-term future, African Parks immediately established a community engagement programme to build a relationship between local communities and park management teams. Through scholarships, learning materials, uniforms, and several other initiatives, such as disaster relief, the goal is to ensure that communities sustainably benefit from their country’s resources. African Parks also worked with tourism operators in the region to formalise the regulation of activities conducted in the park.

The result is a thriving seascape with flourishing aquatic inhabitants (including endangered sea turtles and rare dugongs) and exceptional potential for high-end, low-impact tourism.

Bazaruto landscapes

Ocean safari

Bazaruto is one of the most valuable marine sanctuaries along the East African coastline, protecting critical habitats for many rare and endemic species, including iconic oceanic megafauna. The temperate and calm waters of the area act as one of the most important breeding grounds and migratory corridors of East Africa’s coast. Pods of six species of dolphins (bottlenose, common, Fraser’s, humpback, spinner and striped) cut through the turquoise waves. Below the surface, silver flashes and kaleidoscope colours reveal some 2,000 species of fishes. For half the year, migrating southern right and humpback whales move through the warm waters, their leviathan figures breaching out of the water before slamming down in a cloud of spray. Now and again, the long black fins and sleek tuxedo forms of orcas (killer whales) move silently through the tranquil seas.

For elasmobranch (cartilaginous fish – sharks, rays and so on) enthusiasts, the waters of Mozambique are home to 122 species. In particular, the country is famous for its whale shark encounters. These gentle giants are the biggest fishes in the world, reaching over 14 metres in length, dwarfing those fortunate enough to swim by their side. They congregate around Bazaruto between October and April and (provided they are treated with respect) are slow and docile, allowing for the deeply humbling privilege of time spent in their harmless company. Each of these prodigious plankton-eaters is covered in a unique constellation of white spots, which help scientists keep track of an individual’s movements across the globe.

The whale sharks generally prefer the deeper waters further from the coast, along with other pelagic sharks, manta rays and myriad fish species, including kingfish, king mackerel, marlin, and sailfish. Closer to shore, deep calm blue gives way to the hustle and bustle of the reefs. Coral reefs cover just 0.1% of the ocean yet support 25% of all marine life, which gives some idea of the tremendous diversity on display. In Bazaruto, these vibrant oceanic hubs support a plethora of fauna and flora, from eye-catching fishes to flamboyant nudibranchs.

Every year from November until March, the seas fill with female sea turtles bobbing through to nest on the islands’ beaches. Many (but not all) are returning to the place where they once made the terrifying journey to the sea as hatchlings at least thirty years previously. African Parks has implemented a turtle nest monitoring programme and has since confirmed that five species of turtle: leatherback, loggerhead, green, olive ridley and hawksbill turtles all nest on the beaches of the Bazaruto Archipelago.

Bazaruto

A mermaid’s tale

Yet of all the marine wonders of Bazaruto, the dugongs are the archipelago’s most sought-after residents. Dugongs are the only surviving representatives of an entire family (Dugongidae), and those inhabiting Bazaruto are the last viable population in the western Indian Ocean. Cousins to the manatee, these peculiar-looking creatures look a little as though someone crossed a hippopotamus and a dolphin. Some historians have even postulated that the dugong may be the origin of mermaid mythology in certain cultures.

These massive (up to around 500kg) animals are strictly herbivorous, and their snouts are adapted to vacuum up seagrass from the ocean floor, imparting a rather woeful expression to their round faces and earning them the nickname “sea cows”. Due to the fragile nature of this remaining population of some 300 individuals, African Parks has implemented strict rules for viewing them from boats or underwater. Swimming with dugongs is only permitted in the presence of a guide and is limited to four people at a time. These restrictions (along with the other widescale protective measures) have already proved successful. At the end of 2021, Mozambique documented the largest dugong herd in East Africa in nearly thirty years.

Explore & stay

Want to go on a safari to Bazaruto? To find lodges, search for our ready-made packages or get in touch with our travel team, scroll down to after this story.

Bazaruto Archipelago National Park is open to day visitors and is easily accessible from the nearby towns of either Vilankulos or Inhassoro. Visitors will find accommodation options within and around these mainland hubs to suit almost any budget, from backpackers and hostels to private villas and five-star luxury. However, many visitors opt to stay within the park at one of the magnificent lodges tucked away on a private beach.

Unsurprisingly, most hours are whiled away enjoying the soft white sands of the beaches or exploring the cerulean waters beyond. Hence, activities such as diving, snorkelling, kite surfing or deep-sea fishing are the order of the day. Tiny sailboats transport sun-kissed visitors between islands, stopping over for an intimate picnic beach without another living soul in sight. Experienced equestrians can crest the dunes on horseback before galloping through the sea spray, while less-experienced riders can sit back in the saddle and let their horses amble through the lapping waves. Helicopter flips, sunset cruises on local dhows, beach barbeques and dune boarding – this magical section of the Mozambican coast is a tropical beach paradise.

For those able to drag themselves from the sea, there are inland hikes past scenic freshwater lakes (many of which are home to Nile crocodiles, so swimming is not advisable!) framed against a backdrop of enormous dunes.

Deciding on when to visit is a matter of personal priorities based on both temperatures and seasonal movements of marine life. The park is at its hottest from October to March, when the whale sharks concentrate around the Bazaruto waters. This is also the rainiest time of the year; December through April is considered cyclone season. Unless the goal of the trip is to swim with whale sharks, many travellers prefer to visit during the milder winter months between May to September. The first humpback whales move through Bazaruto in July, with the stragglers departing around October. (For a seasonal calendar of wildlife viewing and weather and up-to-date feedback on research conducted in the area, the Bazaruto Centre for Scientific Studies website is an excellent resource.)

A synonym for blue

While it may not include the standard African safari “fare”, there is no question that a sojourn to Bazaruto Archipelago is defined by a celebration of its spectacular and diverse wildlife. The intoxicating thaumaturgy of water and light accentuates the stunning seascapes supporting rare and endemic marine creatures.

From the Zambezi to the Sea: Accounts From a Grand Safari in Southern Africa

T here are many ways to construct an African safari. Not that you need a theme — simply deciding to decamp to the Masai Mara in Kenya or maybe South Africa’s Kruger National Park is ample enough reason to take a safari. You go on safari because you can. No grand excuse is necessary.

Nature plans better than we could, anyway. In certain instances, it’s timing that’s the key, taking a safari to coincide with the Great Migration in the Serengeti, for instance. In others, geology could dictate the path for you because there’s no need to follow an imaginary line on a map when our planet has already taken the lead.

The Zambezi River crosses into or serves as a sliver of border for Angola, Botswana and Namibia. But it begins its journey in Zambia, the country for which it’s most associated, and serves as the demarcation line between Zambia and Zimbabwe before flowing through Mozambique and into the sea beyond. Handing the reins to nature, what if you followed its course and combined a river-centric safari in Zambia with a stop at Victoria Falls — the Zambezi’s most notable feature is one of the Seven Natural Wonders in the World — and concluded with Mozambique’s beautiful coastline, where the Mighty Zambezi meets its match and empties itself into the Indian Ocean? Let’s find out.

Safari Along the Zambezi

This itinerary was put together by The Luxury Safari Company , founded by Rose Hipwood in 2010. She specializes in bespoke, high-end safaris, and it was Hipwood’s idea to head to Lower Zambezi National Park for a glimpse of what makes the ecosystem so spectacular. From there, I knew I didn’t want to miss out on Victoria Falls and that I wanted to pair the safari with a coastal excursion. She made the whole thing happen in style while ensuring every logistical challenge was handled with ease.

After flying to South Africa, connecting from Johannesburg to Lusaka, Zambia, and hopping on a bush flight, my first stop was the newly renovated Chiawa Camp in Lower Zambezi National Park. The camp is nestled alongside the riverbank in a prime swath of real estate for wildlife viewing, and as if on cue as we arrive via speed boat, four elephants make a slow, graceful crossing across the river to a small, low-lying island where they enjoy whiling away the hot afternoons.

The river is omnipresent in Lower Zambezi National Park, not only its physical being but in the way that it has dictated and shaped its surroundings while providing for the wildlife who call it home. Even in dry season, with a sweltering heat wave sending temperatures soaring well past 110 degrees, the river is large and full of life.

It’s easy to see why founder Grant Cumings handpicked this locale to serve as Chiawa’s home back in 1988. “We were the first camp in this entire national park — there were no roads, no protection,” he says. That doesn’t mean things were quiet, though. “The poaching was insane,” he adds. “We’d find dozens of elephants poached every year.”

Guides with experience dating back to those early days still speak with sadness about the state of the wildlife in the park at that time, hearing gunshots in the night and watching the animals that weren’t killed flee en masse. The presence of Cumings and his team, followed by the deployment of a well-trained, armed park ranger service funded in large part via tourism, was able to turn the tide.

Little did I know that Chiawa’s aforementioned renovation was chronicled with a reality television show , an idea that seems about as far removed from the camp’s rough and tumble origin as you could imagine. But the impact of the overhaul was clear — its nine tents were enlarged and upgraded, and a new solar energy system was installed to provide the camp’s full electrical supply. Also clear is that Cumings would make for excellent TV fodder. He’s a walking anecdote after a life spent in the bush, prone to telling visitors things like how their planned canoe ride will take them down the “channel of death” and that a few people “get wet” and fall off their canoes into the water each year.

I recall the line later that afternoon as an enormous crocodile slides into the water 10 or 20 feet ahead of my canoe. While you know hippos and crocs are all over the place, it’s a different feeling to see one disappear from sight and remain lurking nearby, you fully aware of its presence.

That only heightened the senses though for the viewing that was about to unfold. A herd of about 18 or 20 elephants head to the channel, including wizened matriarchs, a few adorable, awkward youth, and one with a snub-nosed trunk who had to dunk its head under the water to have a drink — possibly the handy work of that now unseen crocodile. They drink and splash and then decide they’ve had enough and cross the channel. Being in such close proximity in the canoe, hovering right above the water without the protection or escapability of a large vessel, provides an eye-opening perspective and appreciation for the majestic creatures and the place they call home.

Beyond game drives and perhaps perilous canoe rides, Chiawa offers boat cruises, catch and release fishing outings, pontoon boat lunches on the water and walking safaris. The latter is another chance to gain a different vantage and understanding of the Lower Zambezi and its wildlife.

After establishing Chiawa, Cumings has since expanded to operate three safari camps, with a fourth on the way this year. Down the river from Chiawa is its sister camp Old Mondoro ; while it’s a short ride away and rests on the same riverbank, it’s an entirely different setting. Old Mondoro feels less like an enclosed camp within a national park than a scattering of small constructions within the wilderness.

When elephants or buffalo pass in front of your tent, it’s clear they’re not coming onto your turf; you’re visiting them on theirs . There are no fences or manicured paths, this is a bush camp that’s very much in and of the place. It’s pure, wild Lower Zambezi. A leopard may take a casual moonlit stroll 100 feet from your dining table, or you may be unable to leave your tent for a stretch if the resident buffalos have taken up outside your front door.

Back at Chiawa, I went on an afternoon game drive with Sam Simunji, a seasoned guide who called his safari vehicle the Lucky Limo. The name proved apt, as the drive played out in the way of many game drives, a long lull with nothing happening before an unforgettable moment erupts, seemingly conjured out of thin air. But in this case, Sam predicted it and even made a maneuver to ensure it took place.

He found a group of four lions dubbed the Ginger Boys, so named for the mane of the eldest member. One or two of the adult males in the group, which was splintered off from a larger pride, are his children. The lions were lazing about in the oppressive heat when a male elephant approached the area. He lurked a good distance away but was eyeing the lions the whole time. Sam, eyeing the elephant in turn, backed our vehicle away, explaining that he felt the elephant may approach or confront the lions, and that we would be in their path should they need to flee the scene.

Now repositioned, we had a great view as the elephant decided he had enough of those lions brazenly hanging out in his domain, trumpeting and charging the group, a tusked freight truck roaring ahead at full speed. Would there be a scrap? Not quite. Four terrified “kings of the jungle” scampered away in great haste, tails between their legs and fright filling their eyes, looking back to see if they were safe.

Sam laughed with glee. Later, he explained that he was taught to anticipate action and put himself in an appropriate place, not only for what’s happening but for what might yet come. “The most important thing I learned, that I still use to this day, was when I was told ‘Sam, you live here, you know how the animals behave,’” he says. He allowed the development to happen and then put us in prime position to see it.

The Zambezi Feeds One of the Wonders of the World

After an action-packed stay in the Lower Zambezi, it was time to follow the river to its fiercest point, Victoria Falls. It may not be the highest waterfall or have the most gushing flow, but if you combine the factors of height, width and flow, it’s considered the world’s largest. The Mighty Zambezi powers it, and powers is an appropriate word.

There are myriad excursions to pursue in and around the falls depending on your tolerance for thrills, as well as the season and conditions. Take an observational walk, getting soaked along the way; hop on a zipline over or bungee jump into its gorges; or go for a dip right at its edge in Devil’s Pool. But the best way to appreciate its splendor is to get a bird’s eye view via helicopter ride. This allows you to see not only its vast expanse and its sheer strength but also appreciate the complete system of which it’s a part. There’s the mile-long face of the falls itself, sure, but then there’s the canyon system it has carved out over the eons, a series of jagged, 100-meter deep switchback gorges that the falls pour into as the Zambezi recollects itself and marches forward.

Plan to spend a few nights at Matetsi to make the most of your stop. The luxury, 19-villa lodge in Zimbabwe is located about 45 minutes away from the falls, making it easy to take one or several trips throughout a stay. Yet, by being located outside of the cities that line the falls on either side of the Zambia-Zimbabwe border, you also get to keep the safari lifestyle going.

Conservation is of the utmost importance to Matetsi, as it’s more than a swanky place to rest your head — it’s a gigantic private game reserve. Matetsi stewards 136,000 acres of territory, including nine miles of riverfront, home to all manners of wildlife. They employ a dedicated anti-poaching team and have constructed 16 solar-powered watering holes around the terrain, ensuring wildlife have ample water sources during dry season. They also support a number of nonprofit initiatives and work closely with neighboring communities.

Amid the Gorillas of the Albertine Rift

Matetsi’s vast reserve serves as a playground for guests, though you might be tempted to stay put in your lavish, enclosed villa, equipped with a plunge pool, soaking tub and contemporary styling, with floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors providing an expansive view of the Zambezi. Elsewhere, there’s a spa and gym, lap pool and a wine cellar, while game drives, boat cruises and elaborate breakfasts in the bush are among the activities.

While it may be hard to steal the limelight from Victoria Falls, Matesti does its best to do just that. It’s a top destination for those who want to see the falls and benefit from a fuller experience and showcase of Zimbabwe’s wilderness at the same time.

Mozambique’s Beaches May Be the World’s Best Kept Secret

The Zambezi doesn’t vanish into oblivion after Victoria Falls, of course. The 1,599-mile river has a solid stretch of road ahead of it before reaching the Indian Ocean, its mouth found about halfway up Mozambique’s lengthy coastline. We’re following the river’s path, but as some travelers may want an East African safari to Kenya or Tanzania with a visit to a sun-soaked beach like Zanzibar, when in southern Africa, you can do the same in Mozambique.

Mozambique’s coast may be one of the world’s best kept secrets, and when flying into Vilanculos (or Vilankulo) and getting your first glimpse from the air, its beauty stuns you with immediacy. Its powdery white sands and turquoise waters are on par with anything found in the Maldives or Turks & Caicos.

I’ll concede the Zambezi delta is quite far north of Vilanculos, but it served as a capable stand-in nevertheless. The river got us to the coast, but the reason we’re here specifically is the Bazaruto archipelago found mere miles off this stretch of Mozambique’s coast.

Plan a stay at the beachfront Santorini Mozambique , an estate-like getaway whose whitewashed walls and blue accents and décor are evocative of its namesake and also a fitting match of its environs. Santorini has five suites spread across its main villa, where there’s a pool, bar and numerous little hideaways to lounge and soak up the vibes. There are also three private villas, one of which, Villa da Praia, is expanding from three to four bedrooms next year. Across the grounds is a lush garden and a spa and a that takes guests straight down to the shore, toes in the sand in a matter of steps.

A visit to Santorini is focused on getting out onto the water, and an outing to Magaruque Island in the Bazaruto archipelago painted a pristine portrait of what the region has to offer. An excursion might include a private picnic lunch after a snorkeling session, where dolphins and turtles may make an appearance, and a cruise around the islands, where a flamboyance of flamingos numbering in the hundreds may be found.

Along the way, step off at Pansy Island, a fantasy-scape of pastels come to life, which in truth is more sandbar than island. The colors veer toward the absurd: white sands amid brilliant blue waters, the bright pink and coral of those flamingos. It’s serene, unbothered nature, and you realize you’re the tiniest speck in the vast Indian Ocean but that you’ve arrived at perhaps its most perfect point. Who’s to argue? There’s nobody else in sight, it’s a personal paradise, your chance to play castaway for a day.

It’s a world removed from Victoria Falls and the safari camps of Zambia, but all you have to do is retrace the river to piece it together. The powerful, life-giving force of the Mighty Zambezi and its meandering route across the continent connected the dots and set the stage for us, remember?

It’s clear that there’s much more to explore, that one visit won’t be enough to satiate the craving. “The pages are the same, but they get rubbed out and written with new stories every day,” Cumings says of the daily safari experience. Even when you know what to expect, you’ll still be surprised. Even if you’ve been there before, you’ll see something new and different and exciting. That’s the essence of a safari and the ideal that keeps travelers coming back time and time again.
