What to Look For in a Mask

Masks should fit snugly around the nose, mouth, sides of the face and under the chin, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

"The best performing masks will have two or more layers of heavyweight fabric like cotton or quilting material," says Dr. Juanita Mora, a Chicago-based allergist and national volunteer spokesperson for the American Lung Association. She estimates that these types of masks will provide 70% to 79% of filtration of particles. Masks with four or more layers could provide 80% to 90% filtration. This means that single-layer masks, such as neck gaiters and bandanas, will likely provide the least protection.

In terms of material, one kind of fabric isn't better than another as long as the fabric is washable and breathable. Mora recommends flannel as a good option in addition to cotton and quilting materials. The World Health Organization recommends looking for masks that have a white or light colored interior, which can help you see when the mask is dirty or wet. The WHO also recommends finding a mask in which the outermost layer is made from a hydrophobic material, such as polyester or a cotton and polyester blend, that will help repel droplets and moisture.

As you shop around, you may see some masks that have space for a filter. Should you want to add your own filter in these masks for extra protection, Mora suggests using HEPA furnace filters or HEPA vacuum cleaner bags because the HEPA filters are already designed to filter microscopic particles. You can purchase these from retailers online, such as Amazon and Home Depot.

There are a few things to avoid in a mask, according to both Mora and the CDC: First, don't use an N95 mask. (These should be reserved for healthcare workers.) Second, don't select a mask with a valve. Those kinds of masks protect you but not those around you since your exhalations (and their particles) escape from the valve. Additionally, masks with valves are prohibited on some airlines. Third, avoid masks made from a fabric that can shed (like the fabric used to create scarves), Mora says, as wearing one could cause you to breathe in those fibers and irritate your lungs.

The WHO also says to avoid wearing a damaged face mask (one with rips or holes) and to forgo masks that fit too loosely. Masks that are dirty, wet or have been worn by another person are not recommended either.

In terms of face shields, Mora doesn't believe they're absolutely necessary for travel. However, if you or your family wishes to be extra cautious, it cannot hurt to wear them as an added layer of protection.

Know Before You Go

Mask rules and regulations will vary depending on your destination, airport and the individual airline. It's important to check the specifics of each of your providers before you leave. Nevertheless, here are some things to keep in mind:

  • You'll need more than one mask for your trip Masks should be changed daily and washed after they're worn, Mora says. You'll want to have at least two per traveler so you can wash one and wear one.
  • Order masks at least one month before your departure date Due to high demand because of the coronavirus pandemic, many commercially made masks are on backorder. As a result, companies are experiencing shipping delays, so plan accordingly.
  • Wear your mask at all times except when eating or drinking A recent study on mask efficacy found that droplets are expelled even when speaking, so it's important to keep your mask on to protect yourself and others.
  • Most people should wear a mask Masks should be worn by all travelers except for those younger than 2, people who cannot remove the mask without assistance or those who cannot wear one for medical reasons.
  • Some masks are prohibited Masks with valves or vents, those made with mesh or lacey fabric and masks that cannot be secured under the chin (like bandanas) are not permitted on some airlines.
  • Face shields are usually okay Several airlines allow passengers to wear a face shield as long as those passengers also wear an appropriate mask.
  • Plan to wear your mask for your entire journey Masks may not be required in an airport, but some individual airlines require passengers to wear them from check-in to baggage claim.
  • Change your mask when you get off the plane As you travel, your mask is soaking up your sweat, makeup and other particles, so you'll want to swap it for a clean mask once you disembark, Mora says. She adds that there's no need to swap masks mid-flight as long as your mask "has a good seal."
  • Use extra caution on public transportation Buses and trains have more people traffic, so you'll encounter more bacteria and viruses in that environment, Mora says. A mask with at least three layers will help decrease transmission. And if the bus or train car is full, she suggests grabbing the next one.

Best Face Masks for Travel

Travelers age 2 and older should wear a face mask during their trips.

Best Masks for Travel

Vistaprint RFS Reusable Mask

Vistaprint creates colorful masks for both children and adults. Masks are made from polyester and are machine-washable. They also come with a pocket for a filter, and Vistaprint sells its own filters specifically designed to work with their masks. You can choose from a variety of colors and patterns, from solids to flowers to camouflage. Reviewers say the masks fit well and seem to be durable. Masks come in three sizes: kids, adult small and adult large. Kid-size masks start at $13 each, while adult masks start at $18 apiece.

Athleta Everyday Non Medical Masks

Travelers hoping to spend their next vacation in the great outdoors should consider this option from Athleta. The adult and kid masks are designed to be lightweight and breathable (perfect for hiking or biking), and made with a spandex-polyester blend. The pleated masks offer plenty of face coverage, which customers appreciate. Reviewers say the masks fit well but wish the nose piece was more moldable to provide a tighter seal. They're sold in packs of five for $20 per pack and a variety of colors are included in each set, including hot pink, black and camouflage.

NxTSTOP Bamboo Face Mask

NxTSTOP manufactures eco-friendly attire specifically designed for globetrotters, so it only makes sense that the company decided to make masks. Its standard face mask is made from bamboo fabric, which NxTSTOP says is both one of the most breathable fabrics available and a material that combats odors better than cotton. The mask has adjustable ear loops and wire around the nose for a customizable fit. It has two layers but does not have a pocket to add your own filter. As an added bonus, you can throw this mask in the washing machine, but you'll have to lay it flat to dry. Reviewers say the masks are comfortable and find them easy to speak in. Two sizes are available: one for children 8 and younger and a second for teens and adults. Masks start at $14 apiece, regardless of size, and come in black, light green, navy, heather gray and pink. NxTSTOP also makes bamboo masks that have a pocket for a filter as well as masks designed for intense activities such as running.

Hedley & Bennett Wake Up & Fight Mask

Woman-founded Hedley & Bennett operates in the realm of professional cooks and is best known for its colorful aprons, chef coats and work shirts. Now, the company also makes its own masks designed with insight from a pediatric orthopedic surgeon. The masks, made from a cotton blend, are fully adjustable and feature wire along the nosepiece for a more secure fit. Additionally, masks come with a filter pocket; you can purchase pre-cut filters separately. The company also makes a kid-size mask with the same adjustable features. Reviews of the masks are mixed, with some praising the mask's breathability and others questioning the construction. However, it's important to note that the company is consistently updating its mask design. Keep in mind, masks are hand-wash only. Masks come in a variety of colors, including light green, beige and red. A single mask costs $22, and the company will donate a mask to an essential worker with each purchase. Kids masks are only sold in packs of three for $45 per pack.

Old Navy Face Mask for Kids

Children will need masks when they travel, too. Few retailers have more diverse options for kids than Old Navy. The company offers two different styles. One is a pleated mask that comes in fun patterns and themes, including hearts, dinosaurs and dogs. The other is a contoured design that features faces of critters like sharks, raccoons and bears. Both styles are constructed with three layers of cotton poplin fabric. Additionally, parents will appreciate that both styles are machine-washable and can go in the dryer. Overall, reviewers say these are good options for children but note that the pleated masks run small, and some say the contoured masks don't seem to be three layers. Pleated masks come in packs of five and can be purchased for $12.50. Contoured masks are sold in sets of three for $9.50.

[Buy a pack of three contoured masks here or a pack of five pleated masks here .]

Marine Layer Signature Tie Mask

Marine Layer's mask uses tie fasteners so wearers can easily adjust the mask's fit. Each mask features a double layer of fabric made from a cotton and modal blend and includes a pocket for a removable filter. Additionally, Marine Layer is making masks to send to essential workers, and you can opt to add a donation when you purchase your mask. Marine Layer currently only makes adult masks, which come in one color: navy. Masks with adjustable ear loops are also available. The Signature Tie Mask is sold in packs of five for $25.

OMK Reusable Face Shield

While face shields are not required while traveling, they may offer cautious travelers extra peace of mind. A fan favorite is the OMK Reusable Face Shield. The shield wraps around the side of the face toward the ears, which helps to provide extra protection. Additionally, the shield is equipped with an elastic headband and foam around the forehead for added comfort. As its name suggests, this shield is also reusable, though the company advises properly disinfecting it between uses. Buyers say the shield is good quality and comfortable to wear. But remember, this is not a substitute for a face mask. Pricing starts at $9.99 for a pack of two shields.

Everlane 100% Human Face Mask

Everlane's one-size adult masks are made from either cotton or a fabric blend (linen, cotton and rayon). They have two-layer construction and slightly stretchy ear loops to accommodate most face sizes. Style-conscious travelers will appreciate that in addition to solid color masks, Everlane offers patterns like tie-dye. Reviewers are complimentary of the masks, saying they are soft, comfortable and great for all-day wear. However, others note that the masks can take a long time to ship. Still on the fence? The masks are machine-washable, and the company donates 10% of mask sales to the American Civil Liberties Union. Plus, Everlane masks masks for kids, too. A set of five costs $25, for both adult and kid sizes.

Zubrex Disposable Face Mask

To avoid the hassle of washing masks while on vacation, consider purchasing disposable masks. Zubrex's lightweight, blue masks are made with three layers of a nonwoven fabric that the company says will make breathing easier. These masks also feature a metal piece around the nose so the wearer can adjust the mask to better fit their face. An added bonus? They're sold in packs of 50. Reviewers say the masks are comfortable and fit well. Packs start at $12.98.

CONICOMasks Face Mask for Glasses Wearers

Reviewers who wear glasses praise CONICOMasks' covering because it doesn't fog their glasses. The mask features a special construction that allows the top part to sit high on the nose bridge, beneath the frames and relatively flat against the skin. Plus, there is no metal nosepiece, which can sometimes make it difficult to securely use a mask while wearing glasses. While purchasers love the fact that this mask delivers on its promise to not fog their glasses, many are also wowed by the mask's dual-layer construction and its soft fabric. Keep in mind, masks are made from linen or a cotton-polyester blend, so they are machine-washable but cannot be put in the dryer. Masks start at $11.99 each and come in a variety of colors.

Proted Kids Face Shield

Everyone loves a good sticker, which is one of several reasons why this kid-size face shield is a favorite among buyers. Each of Proted's shields comes with a set of decals so kids can decorate the perimeter; stickers include dinosaurs, soccer players, ice cream cones and rainbows. The shield is made from a thick polycarbonate, while the colorful head strap is made from adjustable Velcro. When your child is ready for a snack or needs a drink, they won't need to remove the shield. Instead, they can flip it up to the top of their head. Parents say their children love the face shields and praise Proted for sending their orders quickly. Shields start at $16.95 each.

Kenny Flowers Non-Medical Lifestyle Mask

Kenny Flowers, which was founded in 2015, makes tropical-themed apparel for the beach-loving traveler. The company's face masks are no different. The coverings come in fun patterns like tie-dye, tropical leaves and parrots. Masks are a single size and have ties to customize fit. Materials vary, but most are made from cotton or rayon. They're also machine-washable. Additionally, for every mask purchased, Kenny Flowers will donate a mask to a person in need in Bali (where the masks are made). Individual masks cost $10 each, though the company also sells bundles of shirts and masks in matching fabrics.

Dr. Talbot's Disposable Kid's Face Mask

Parents say these fun face masks are a good disposable option for kids. Dr. Talbot's masks are made with three layers but are still breathable. Though the ear loops aren't adjustable, they are made from a soft elastic. Each mask also features an adjustable nosepiece. Each pack comes with a mix of designs that could include rainbows and hearts or camouflage and castles. Parents are complimentary of the designs; however, several caution that the ear loops can easily rip off. The masks are sold in packs of 10 and start at $9.99 per pack.

VIDA Protective Mask

VIDA's 100% cotton masks are made with two layers. They have adjustable straps to help wearers as young as 5 get a snug fit. For additional comfort, masks come equipped with a metal nosepiece. Each mask also has a filter pocket and ships with one disposable PM2.5 carbon filter. Additional filters are sold separately. Reviewers say these masks work well for themselves and their children. They also say the masks are comfortable. VIDA's masks are available in three sizes: kids, regular and extra large. Masks start at $10 each, are hand-wash only and come in a variety of colors. However, not all colors are available in all sizes. Mask packs are also available.

CASETiFY Reusable Cloth Mask

For each mask it sells, CASETiFY will donate a mask to an essential worker, which is only an additional bonus to reviewers. Buyers favor this mask because it is comfortable and easy to breathe in, but adults lament the fact that masks don't come in a kids size for their children. Each mask is made from cotton and has elastic ear straps. It also comes with two PM2.5 carbon filters. CASETiFY recommends replacing the filter after a week of use and sells additional filters separately. Masks come in four colors and cost $15 each.

Accessory option:

VELCRO Face Mask Extender

If you're wearing a mask for several hours straight, it's possible your mask's ear loops will start digging into your ears. This extender could be just what you need to alleviate that pain. The ends of the adjustable extender fold around the mask's ear loops. When in use, the extender secures the mask around the back of your head and pulls the ear loops off the back of your ears. According to reviewers, the extender does its job well and can help their masks fit more tightly. Others say the product is great for people who wear over-ear hearing aids, as the extender helps to keep the aids in place when removing the mask. Extenders come in a single size (a foot long) and are sold in packs of four in black, white or multicolor. Packs start at $7.99.

The Very Best Masks to Wear on an Airplane

Doctors, infectious-disease experts, and parents on the best covid-19 protection for traveling..

Best mask for preschoolers

Though the government has officially lifted the COVID-19 National Emergency as of April 2023, it’s still important to remain mindful of your personal and public health, especially in crowded indoor spaces — including airports and planes. The CDC still recommends masks for all people in areas of the U.S. that are deemed high risk and for anyone who is immunocompromised or unvaccinated. And even with the end of most COVID restrictions nationwide, many health experts believe that masking remains an important tool in protecting yourself and others from XBB.1.5 and other subvariants that are still circulating throughout the U.S.

Currently, most airlines do not require masks for staff or travelers, except on flights into countries with mandates still in place. Regardless, airports remain a meeting point for travelers from all over the world, so wearing quality masks that offer high filtration — such as KN95, KF94, and N95 respirators — can be a critical step in reducing the spread.

If you’re not up-to-date on your COVID-19 vaccines, the CDC recommends delaying travel until you are, but if you have to fly anyway, you should take extra precautions. That includes social distancing whenever possible, avoiding eating or drinking in poorly ventilated or crowded areas, and wearing a high-filtration mask. According to Dr. Aaron Glatt, the chair of medicine at Mount Sinai South Nassau and a spokesman for the Infectious Diseases Society of America, the ventilation in airplanes is actually pretty good despite the length of time you spend inside, and if everyone is wearing a mask, that lowers the risk even more. But, he says, “if the person sitting next to you happens to have an asymptomatic case of COVID and you’re at high risk, then that’s very dangerous.” That’s why Yi Cui , a professor of materials science and engineering at Stanford University who co-authored a  study on the efficiency of various mask materials , emphasizes the importance of getting vaccinated and getting your booster shot. “Your risk is so much lower. If you look at who needs to be admitted into hospitals, more than 90 percent or maybe even 95 percent are people who haven’t been vaccinated,” he says.

To find out which masks are best to wear both on the plane and at the gate, we spoke with Cui, Glatt, and nine other experts. Dr. Waleed Javaid, the director of infection prevention and control at Mount Sinai Downtown, says he gets this question all the time. “Everybody asks me, ‘Should we really have an N95?’ ‘Should we have this and that?’” His answer: “You should have whichever mask you’re going to keep wearing.” And Dr. Purvi Parikh, an immunologist with NYU Langone Health, advises wearing a KN95 , KF94 , or an N95 when flying, whether you’re up-to-date on your COVID-19 vaccine or not. “I know people personally who have gotten sick while traveling even after they were fully vaccinated,” she says, noting that if you are traveling to or from an area of the world where COVID-19 is spreading more rapidly, you should be extra careful. But if you can’t get your hands on a high-filtration mask before you leave, Aaron Collins , a mechanical engineer with a background in aerosol science who has  tested  hundreds of masks he purchased online, suggests double masking as an alternative. “It’s better than a cloth mask or surgical mask alone but not the ‘best’ solution,” he says.

What we’re looking for

Authenticity.

Some masks are more prone to counterfeiting than others, but a good way to know whether you are getting legitimate KF94s is by checking that they are indeed made in South Korea. And a good way to vet an N95 mask is to check for NIOSH approval and other labels that ensure they’ve been tested to meet specific standards. Those labels are  ASTM F3502, Workplace Performance, Workplace Performance Plus , and the code “TC-84A” followed by four more digits. Where things get sticky is with KN95 masks. Michael Chang, an M.D. and assistant professor of pediatrics with  McGovern Medical School at UTHealth, Houston , says that at this point, he suspects most KN95s are fakes since “there is no regulatory agency that ensures a manufacturer actually meets the KN95 standard.” As a general rule of thumb, both Chang and Collins agree that the best way to avoid fakes is to buy exclusively from reputable sources. “Don’t buy random brands from Amazon or eBay,” Collins says. “My recommendation is  ProjectN95 ,  BeHealthyUSA ,  KollecteUSA , or, if using Amazon, verify that you are purchasing from the brand’s ‘official’ store.”

Otherwise, check for labeling that says the mask is made from at least two layers of nonwoven polypropylene plus a melt-blown inner-filter layer. The random arrangement of fibers in nonwoven materials does a better job at filtering tiny particles, like bacteria and viruses, than traditional woven fabrics like cotton. And ideally, they should be independently tested by a third party to ensure proper filtration. In addition, legitimate masks should come in tamper-evident packaging and should be marked with an expiration date. The same applies to surgical masks, though, Collins says he would skip them if you have access to N95s, KN95s, or KF94s because the standards for surgical masks “are much looser, and the quality of them is all over the place.”

Counterfeit masks aside, the best masks are the ones that fit your face the best, and features that improve the fit of a mask such as adjustable ear-loops and a flexible nose wire can also improve its filtration efficiency. This is particularly true for children who range in size, even across age groups. To ensure you are getting the most protection out of your mask, Ravina Kullar , an infectious-disease specialist, epidemiologist, and spokesperson for the  Infectious Diseases Society of America , says it should fit snugly, covering your nose and mouth, and should fit below your chin. Any gaps around the edges will allow potential viral droplets to enter or escape. You may have to try a few before finding your perfect fit, but if you end up buying a pack of masks that are too big, Dr. Stacy De-Lin, a family medicine specialist in New York City, says you can tie knots in the ear loops or twist them once before putting them on to ensure a tighter fit. (If you’re no good at knots, there are lots of  straps  and  accessories  you can buy online to adjust the fit.)

In addition to fitting well, Chang says masks need to be comfortable and easy to breathe through. You want a mask with some resistance to catch tiny airborne particles, but not so much resistance that it forces the air to find another way in or out — usually around the sides. Lastly, if you are buying masks for children, know that they will have strong opinions about which masks they want to wear. The factors that drive those opinions can involve colors, patterns, how the ear loops feel on the backs of their ears,   or how soft the interior is against their face. If there is a high-quality mask that they willingly put on for a plane ride or school trip, that mask is probably the best.  Dr. Sten Vermund , a pediatrician, infectious-disease epidemiologist, and dean of the Yale School of Public Health, says that making mask use fun and  gamelike  will increase the chances of  children  cooperating, especially younger children.

Availability

Although stock seems to have leveled out with the relaxing of mask mandates, oftentimes the highest-filtration masks with the most recommendations (from Collins and other experts) are the ones that sell out first. So to make sure you have one to wear when you need it, we’re prioritizing masks that are consistently in stock, since an out-of-stock mask can’t help protect you or your family.

Best N95 mask

Protective Health Gear N95 Model 5160 Disposable Particulate Respirator

Early on in the pandemic as hospitals were getting slammed with COVID patients, N95 masks were in tragically short supply. So public-health experts discouraged non-health-care workers from buying them. But now they are much more readily available to the general public, and many American companies have started making NIOSH-approved N95s in soft, foldable shapes that are much more comfortable than the stiff cup styles.

This one from Protective Health Gear is made in Paterson, New Jersey, which helps the company avoid most potential supply-chain disruptions and ensures that each mask undergoes the strictest quality checks. Each one comes individually wrapped and features the NIOSH label, the brand’s logo, the TC-84A label, and even the mask’s specific lot number. If you’re looking for a comfortable NIOSH-approved N95 to wear on a plane, this is the first one I would recommend. Because it’s a bifold-style mask, it fits and feels similar to a KN95. But in addition to a soft inner layer and nose wire, it features foam nose padding to further seal any gaps and prevent air from escaping or getting in. As for the head straps, they are soft and stretchy but don’t feel flimsy. It’s the mask I would reach for if I were a doctor or if I were going to an indoor concert at the height of a spike in infections.

Best KN95 mask

Powecom Non-Medical Disposable KN95 Respirator Face Masks

Powecom KN95 masks were on the FDA’s list of approved face masks for health-care professionals when that list was necessary. Like other KN95 masks, this one claims to filter out 95 percent of small particles. Indeed, Collins has tested the kid-size Powecom masks and found that they have a filtration efficiency of 97.3 percent. In September of 2020, I bought them for my fiancé, Jacob Cohen, to wear while teaching in person. He teaches fourth grade in Brooklyn and has tried a lot of KN95’s over the last two years. They are one of his favorite masks for work, and he says that, in addition to making him feel safe in the classroom before vaccines were available, they fit more snugly than most of the other KN95’s he has tried, and they don’t move when he is talking. De-Lin says the fit of KN95s is extremely important. “I think the biggest thing that I see with the KN95 masks is they’re often not fitted well. It’s supposed to collapse along your cheeks when you inhale so that no air can enter in through the sides.” I have worn these masks on the subway, to the office, at museums, on Metro-North, at the airport, and to countless doctor’s appointments, and find them to be soft on the inside and a good fit for my face shape. They meet De-Lin’s fit requirement, collapsing around the cheeks when you breathe. When worn with my glasses, they fog less than other masks I have tried.

Best KF94 mask

BOTN KF94 (Large Black)

KF94 masks are a great option for people who have trouble finding a good KN95 fit. They open up a bit like an envelope and sit slightly off the face, giving you more room to talk and breathe. In addition to being manufactured in South Korea and approved by the KFDA, these BOTN KF94 masks are featured on Collins’s public Google doc containing filtration results for the masks he has tested. In his testing, he found them to have a filtration efficiency of 99.2 percent. Like the LG Airwasher masks favored by Strategist senior vice-president of e-commerce Camilla Cho, BOTN masks come with special adjustable ear loops. Simply pull on the little front loops to adjust the tightness around your ears and cheeks. Each mask is made with four layers of electrostatic nonwoven material, including a melt-blown filter layer. They come individually packaged in a sealed tamperproof sleeve and the brand’s logo is printed on the front of each mask. Upon testing them, I noticed how light the masks are, far lighter than a Powecom KN95 or even other KF94s I have tried. So while Powecom’s fit my face shape a little better, these will probably become my favorite spring and summer masks. The inner layer is comfortable against my skin, but I would describe it as smooth rather than soft, another reason why I think this would be a great warm-weather mask.

Best N95 mask for frequent fliers

Kimberly-Clark Professional N95 Pouch Respirator (53358), NIOSH-Approved

These Kimberly-Clark N95 masks are also a lot softer than the traditional cup-shaped N95s, making them less likely to dig into your cheeks and easier to wear for long periods of time. They’re also a favorite of Intelligencer editor Chas Danner , who says that despite looking “totally ridiculous,” the mask is super-secure. Though he originally bought them for traveling, he now wears one anytime he goes somewhere particularly risky, including waiting in line for hours to get a PCR test during the Omicron wave. The beak-shaped style of mask has also become popular with restaurant workers because of how comfortable it is for long periods of time.

When he tested these masks, Collins found that they filter out 97 percent of airborne particles. “The head straps are really comfortable, and I’ve gotten such a good seal on them I’ve had condensation pool inside the mask. I felt like I was in  Dune, ” he says. While most other masks come in packs of five or ten, you have to buy 5o to get these. Still, at the current sale price that puts them at about a dollar a mask. So if you know you’ll eventually wear all 50, it’s a very good deal.

Best colorful KN95 mask

Kaze KN95 Masks

Despite fewer people wearing masks in New York City, I have continued to mask up indoors as much as possible. If I’m quickly popping into a café or restaurant to order food, I’ll wear an Evolve Together surgical-style mask . For trips on the subway, long shifts at the co-op , or doctor visits, I wear a tighter-fitting KN95 mask from Kaze. These colorful and adjustable masks have quickly become my favorite for higher-risk situations, because they make me feel cute while giving me peace of mind. The brand sells its KN95 masks in color-palette sets ranging from popping hues with contrasting ear loops to desert neutrals, plain black and white, and pretty pastels. The masks are beloved by a large swath of celebrities — including Justin and Hailey Bieber, Dua Lipa, Cardi B, and Offset. The wide range of colors makes it easy to match your mask to your outfit.

Looks aside, Kaze masks are made of five layers of nonwoven material — including a melt-blown filter layer. They have been tested by Nelson Labs and certified by the Swiss lab SGS. The masks have little silicone toggles on the ear loops that make adjusting the fit super easy and a foam nose pad that helps create a tight seal. They are comparable to Powecom masks in softness and breathability. While Kaze masks are more expensive than most KN95 masks, you can wear them more than once as long as you let your mask air out for 72 hours — and if you save them for special occasions like flying to Paris or Rome on vacation, they’re definitely worth the money.

Powecom Children's KN95 Respirator Mask

Powecom KN95 masks were among the very first nonfabric face masks we recommended, and they have consistently held a top spot on our mask roundups since the summer of 2021. As we noted above, when Collins tested these kid-sized Powecoms, he found them to have a filtration efficiency of 97.3 percent. They are made of multiple layers of nonwoven polypropylene with a melt-blown fabric-filter layer, flexible nose wire, and latex-free ear loops. The material is soft on the skin and creates a tight seal all the way around the mask from the bridge of the nose to the underside of the chin. Collins recommends them for children ages 7 to 12, depending on face size.

Best KF94 mask for kids

BK Healthcare Dokkaebi FDA Listed Kids KF94 Mask

These KF94 masks from Korean company BK Healthcare (sold by Vida) are made from four layers of nonwoven Polypropylene, including a melt-blown filter layer and a soft inner lining. They are labeled made in Korea and available in four colors and two kids’ sizes, plus, they come wrapped in tamper-evident single mask sleeves. Strategist senior editor Jen Trolio tested several different KF94 options on her daughters but gave a slight edge to these because they come in a few different colors, the nose piece fits the youngest daughter (who was 4 at the time of testing) well, and the tamperproof, individually wrapped packaging, while not especially eco-friendly, is really handy (and though we haven’t tried it, Vida does offer mask recycling if you take advantage of the included prepaid mailing label to return used masks back to the company).

The Bio for Preschool Kids ‘U&I’ KF94 Adjustable

Collins features these preschooler-appropriate KF94s on his  public Google spreadsheet , showing them to have a very high filtration efficiency of 99.3 percent. So when I found out that fellow Strategist writer Lauren Ro bought them for her older son when he was almost 3, I asked her for more details. She heard about them through a parent at her son’s preschool, who sourced a bunch of different KF94 masks directly from a Korean importer and tried them all on her 2.5-year-old. According to the friend, this mask was the clear winner and luckily was available on Amazon. “The XXS are perfectly suited for 2- to 3-year-olds, and they actually stayed on my son’s face. He didn’t seem to mind them as much as other masks and kept them on instead of constantly pulling them down under his nose and chin,” Ro says, noting that he’s worn them on cross-country flights, all day at school, even outside, without complaining.

As a number of cities on the East Coast experience levels of smoke that are considered ‘unhealthy’ , there’s one travel essential you should still consider packing — a good face mask .

While it’s true that it’s no longer mandatory to wear masks on public transport in most major cities, and as of April 2022, most major airlines have dropped mask mandates (at least for domestic flights), there’s nothing wrong with taking extra precautions for your health. Even while you’re indoors (like at for a layover at an airport, or at a bus terminal), you can still breathe in excess smoke, which could lead to respiratory symptoms like a dry cough, scratchy throat or even difficulty breathing.

What Kind of Face Mask is Best for Airplanes and Travel?

The best face masks for travel should keep you safe and secure, while being comfortable enough to wear for every leg of your journey, from check-in to baggage claim. They should be breathable too, so you won’t feel like you’re suffocated by the middle of your flight.

Even if you’ve already landed and are playing tourist, you’ll still need to keep a good travel mask on hand. Here are a few important things to look for when shopping for the best travel mask for you.

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

Breathability: We’ve chosen masks made from ultra-breathable materials for this list, so you won’t feel suffocated, even on your longest cross-country flight. That being said, you should still always look for masks with a tight seal over the nose and mouth, especially if you’re buying disposable ones.

Material: The most protective masks will have two or more layers of good-quality fabric like 100% cotton, or have professional-grade filtration. At the end of the day, though, the best mask to wear on a long flight is one you’ll leave on for the entire flight.

The 6 Best Face Masks for Travel

Rules around face masks may be loosening, but the cdc continues to recommend them on public transportation, including on airplanes..

Face mask mandates may be loosening across the United States, but when it comes to travel, they’re still an essential item to bring along for many. Despite the lifting of the federal mask mandate on April 18, masks remain required in some airports, on some public transit systems, and in some private businesses.

And there are still plenty of travelers who will feel more comfortable continuing to wear a mask for the foreseeable future.

When it comes to “one-way masking”—meaning travelers or crew who wear a mask for added protection even if (or especially because) it’s not required and those around them are not wearing a mask—having a higher-quality mask is even more important.

Whether you need a face mask for travel due to a requirement or because of personal public health concerns, we’ve rounded up the best ones to use.

What types of face masks are allowed on airplanes?

As of press time, passengers on all U.S. flights are no longer required to wear a face mask.

While some international airlines have begun dropping the mask requirement as well, there are also international carriers that continue to require face masks and some of them will technically not allow cloth masks. Passengers on these flights are required to wear surgical masks or FFP1, FFP2, or FFP3 face masks (the higher the number, the higher the quality), which are the European equivalent of N95 quality masks (N95s pass muster too).

Make sure you are up to date on the latest masking requirement for the domestic or internatinoal carrier you are flying with.

The most protective types of face masks

Of course, wearing a face mask isn’t just about complying with rules—it’s also about providing the best protection. In this regard, N95s are still regarded as the best type of face mask to wear on flights by health experts .

“Loosely woven cloth products provide the least protection, layered finely woven products offer more protection, well-fitting disposable surgical masks and KN95s offer even more protection, and well-fitting NIOSH-approved respirators (including N95s) offer the highest level of protection,” the CDC states in its latest mask guidance . (NIOSH stands for National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.)

While KN95 and N95 masks (or respirators as they are sometimes called) can offer a similar level of protection, N95s are considered a notch above because of the NIOSH approval that ensures they are well manufactured. The CDC reported that about 60 percent of KN95 respirators evaluated by NIOSH during the pandemic were of subpar quality, so it is important to research and buy quality KN95s, typically made overseas, from reputable vendors.

Though N95 masks have become the gold standard for protection, there is one drawback to them—they aren’t washable, which means they are less reusable than cloth masks. Per the CDC, “Data suggest limiting the number of reuses to no more than five total uses (five total donnings)” for respirators. Ultimately, what matters is that the fit remains close to the face and that the condition of the mask remains sufficient to provide adequate protection. Once either of those falls by the wayside, it is probably time to swap out for a new mask.

Best face masks to buy for travel

Regardless of which mask type you wear, it’s important to ensure it creates a tight seal against your face with no gaps and is comfortable enough to wear for the duration of your flight. These are some of the best face masks available for flights, as well as other forms of travel:

Masking During Travel

CDC Respiratory Virus Guidance has been updated. The content of this page will be updated soon.

travelers wearing masks

Respiratory infections are a leading cause for seeking medical care among returning travelers. Common respiratory infections include COVID-19 , influenza , and the common cold. Masking is a critical public health tool for preventing the spread of respiratory diseases. When people properly wear a high-quality mask or respirator, they protect themselves and those around them, and help keep travel safer for everyone.

When is masking most useful?

Wearing a high-quality mask or respirator is most beneficial when:

  • You are in crowded or tight spaces with poor ventilation like airport jetways, airplanes when the ventilation system is off, seaports, or when in close-contact situations like on a train or bus.
  • There are high levels of respiratory disease at your travel destination or in the community you are traveling through.
  • You or someone you have close contact with has a weakened immune system or are at increased risk for severe illness .
  • See specific recommendations for COVID-19.
  • You were exposed to a person with COVID-19 in the last 10 days.

Why should I wear a mask when traveling if I don’t usually wear one in my community?

  • Traveling can bring you in contact with people from many different places where viruses are spreading, including different COVID-19 variants and other viruses.
  • Using public transportation and being in transportation hubs such as airports, can involve spending long periods of time in areas that may be crowded or poorly ventilated. This increases your chance of exposure to respiratory diseases.
  • Wearing a mask during travel can also help protect others who cannot avoid being in crowded places when they are traveling. Some of these people might be more vulnerable, like babies under 6 months of age, persons over 65 years of age, or those with a weakened immune system.

Your Guide to Buying N95s, KN95s, and Other Upgraded Masks for Travel

Early on in the pandemic, a relative sent me a box of disposable masks and said they were medical grade because they were marked “Made in Taiwan.” At the time, Taiwan was known for its reliable PPE, in great part because of its ramped up production and distribution of masks . But when I opened the box, I quickly realized the stamped words and “medical face mask” label didn’t mean they were necessarily legit. That's when I began to understand just how complicated it is to suss out the authenticity of the hoards of face masks flooding the market.

“Trust and transparency are key parts of your mask-selection process,” Bona Fide Masks president Bill Taubner says. “A reputable distributor should be able to authenticate the source of the masks and the supply chain.”

Taubner’s family-owned company (also operating under Ball Chain Manufacturing) is a vetted partner of nonprofit Project N95 , which serves as a national clearinghouse for trustworthy PPE products—and a great resource for finding the best disposable face masks online.

Amid the Omicron surge , the search for dependable face masks is more crucial than ever. In mid-January, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) revised its mask recommendations to encourage the use of well-fitting disposable masks.

“Loosely woven cloth products provide the least protection, layered finely woven products offer more protection, well-fitting disposable surgical masks and KN95s offer even more protection, and well-fitting NIOSH-approved respirators (including N95s) offer the highest level of protection,” the government agency now says .

The CDC recommends masking up in all public indoor settings and crowded outdoor areas, and it is required on transportation like flights and trains and in places like national monuments and national parks, regardless of vaccination status. As a result, demand for the upgraded disposable masks is at a peak. While major retailers, like Home Depot , Lowe's , Target , and Menards , are a good bet for finding legitimate ones out and about, actually scoring them may feel like finding a diamond in the rough. And while many online retailers have masks available to order, shipping times are taking longer than expected. All that is to say, patience—and discernment—are required when shopping for masks these days. “Like other reputable mask providers in the United States, we were faced with this unpredictable and unprecedented demand surge,” Taubner says of the 1,000 percent increase in orders they saw during the holidays, likening it to the shortage of Clorox and Lysol products back in 2020.

While the availability will likely continue to ebb and flow, here’s where you can start the search for the best disposable masks for travel and everyday use.

N95 face masks

While N95s were initially reserved for health care workers, the CDC’s latest guidance removes that stipulation. The government announced on January 19 that it will distribute 400 million of them from the Strategic National Stockpile for free, with pickup at local health centers and participating pharmacies. Among those who have confirmed participation (in certain regions) are Walgreens, CVS, Rite Aid, and Stop & Shop.

This type of face mask is also the easiest to check for authenticity since the CDC has a list of N95 masks and model numbers that have the met the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) standards. Simply put, if they’re not on the list, they’re not legit.

To note, proper N95s should have around-the-head elastic bands to ensure the most secure fit, no matter what the shape is—cone, flat-fold, or duck-bill.

KN95 face masks

While the tight fit of an N95 ensures that viruses can’t sneak in through the edges, many find the headbands uncomfortable, especially over long periods of time, like on a flight . KN95s offer less filtration, but they do have ear loops, which are generally easier to keep on. “The best mask is the one that you will wear and the one you can keep on all day long—that you can tolerate in public, indoor settings, and tolerate where you need to wear it,” the CDC’s Rochelle Walensky said at a January 12 press briefing .

The bigger challenge with KN95s is that the CDC says about 60 percent of the ones on the market did not pass the NIOSH standards and could be counterfeit, warning that there is a risk associated with purchasing masks from foreign countries .

More so than other types of masks, which can be otherwise vetted, there isn't one place to check KN95 standards, so where you're buying them from is more crucial. Supplies may be plentiful with fast delivery on Amazon and eBay, but the open marketplace means there's a greater chance they're counterfeit or poor quality. (Tip: On Amazon, look under “Shipping from” and avoid third-party distributors.) A safer bet is to look at Project N95's products under “Distributor” and check out direct sites, like Bona Fide , Planet Halo , and Shawmut Corporation . Once you do receive products, manufacturers like Powecom have an anti-fake check to ensure their authenticity.

Medical or surgical masks

While the loose fit of medical masks is the major reason they're not as effective at warding off the airborne virus, double masking with a cloth mask on top can help secure a paper mask's edges to your face. The FDA lists out approved surgical masks on its Appendix A , and the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) also has a set of standards. Most medical masks on the market fall under the ASTM F2100 standard as Level 2 (which protects against situations with moderate fluid exposure) or Level 3 (for high fluid exposure). In addition to fluids, these masks also shield from particulates and microorganisms, but they technically don’t protect against airborne disease on their own. While not as common but also offering higher filtration, a few masks out there fall under a separate type of certification , ASTM 3502-21, which passes a different set of tests.

Kids' disposable face masks

Finding the proper masks for kids might just be the most challenging task right now. There aren't any certified N95s for children yet, so anything labeled as such hasn’t passed the right checks and balances.

Project N95 does offer kid-sized KN95s (from Aok Tooling ) and ASTM Level 3 surgical masks (from RespoKare and Everwin Precision ), though they were temporarily out of stock at the time of publishing. Powecom and Harleys, both also sold on Project N95, do have child-sized products available through Bona Fide.  Like adults, a mask kids will wear all day—especially in school—is likely the best choice, as long as it is snug and secure.

As travel restrictions begin to loosen, one thing will remain constant (at least for now)—face masks will be required. From legitimate (and in-stock) N95 masks, to ultra-comfortable face-coverings, these are the best masks for travel.

Editor’s Note: Make sure to check the CDC’s latest mask guidelines and their tips on good mask habits to maximize protection for yourself and others .

Bona Fide N95 and K95 Masks

N95 Mask

N95 and K95 are the most protective types of masks on the market, but legitimate ones can be tough to find (watch out for poorly-made knockoffs that don’t filter as effectively). Bona Fide Masks is a reputable place to buy real ones. This site offers National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) approved N95 Masks as well as FDA authorized K95 masks .

Both the N95 and K95s fit securely to your face, but their molded design can be more comfortable to wear than a fabric mask, because the mask stands away from your mouth.

TPG’s 7 favorite face masks and where to buy them

Andrea M. Rotondo

Editor's Note

Masks aren't going away anytime soon.

Airlines and airports still require them while traveling, public transportation in many cities requires you to wear one while riding and many businesses require them for entry.

And now that the CDC is recommending the wearing of masks while indoors in high transmission areas, we'll continue to see more places where masks will be a necessity for entry.

It's important to find one that's comfortable and appropriate for you. To help you narrow down the list, we're highlighting a few of the products TPG staffers are using right now.

For more TPG news delivered each morning to your inbox, sign up for our daily newsletter .

KENNY FLOWERS

If you ask The Points Guy himself, Brian Kelly, what brand of mask he loves, he'll tell you about Kenny Flowers. These masks are made of soft, colorful fabrics, so they're comfortable to wear for extended periods of time. They are non-medical grade masks you can easily machine-wash. Masks cost $10, while a mask and shirt combo is $89.

VENTED N95 MASK PAIRED WITH A SURGICAL MASK

Several TPGers, including editor-at-large Zach Honig , prefer to wear a vented N95 mask paired with a surgical mask. These products provide top-of-the-line protection for both you and those around you.

Be aware that there are two types of N95 masks: vented and unvented. The unvented (medical grade) masks are the type health care workers regularly use -- although they can also use a vented (non-medical grade) mask paired with a surgical mask over it.

When wearing a vented mask, you are not protecting those around you -- just yourself. So, if you do buy a vented mask, be sure to also layer on a surgical mask to ensure both you and people nearby are protected from the potential spread of any pathogen.

MARINE LAYER REUSABLE DOUBLE LAYER MASKS

What we love about Marine Layer masks is the fact that they've got adjustable fabric loops or ties, depending on the version you buy, instead of a one-size-fits-all elastic. This makes it super easy to customize the fit for anyone in your family. Made from soft fabric, these masks are comfortable and breathable, so you can wear them for extended periods when necessary. Spend $25 to buy three Adjustable Sport masks (with adjustable over-the-ear loops) or five Signature Tie masks (with fabric ties).

9 of the most breathable masks for traveling

Nearly eight months into the COVID-19 pandemic , people are slowly beginning to travel again, with road trips up and global air travel starting to creep back. While not everyone is comfortable getting on a plane just yet – in an International Air Transportation Association survey conducted from February to June, 58% reported they’ve been avoiding air travel  – airlines have put into place new safety protocols, including updating air filters, blocking out the middle seat to allow for easier social distancing, and mandating that all passengers wear a mask.

Nowadays, there’s a sea of mask options available, so choose one that’s equal parts functional and comfortable. Below, find nine of the best masks for air travel, keeping you covered from security check to baggage claim and beyond.

Three face masks with floral patterns

At $5 each (€4), Gap’s triple-layer cotton masks are breathable and, thanks to the built-in nose wire, fit snuggly. Plus, the pleated design expands to comfortably cover a range of face shapes. They come in packs of three or 10, and are available in family sets, bundled with sizes for both adults and kids.

A pink face mask against a bright turquoise background

The Los Angeles-based accessory company specializes in all things cute, and its new masks are no exception. Face coverings in avocado, boba tea, or sushi-splashed prints are also supremely functional, with a HEPA filter pocket (not included, find one on Amazon ), adjustable ear straps and a removable wire nose bridge insert for a more comfortable fit. They cost $14 (€12) for each adult- or child-sized mask.

An Asian woman wearing a stylish navy face mask stands in front of a patterned screen

Like so many other companies, the Seattle-based travel bag manufacturer has gotten into the face mask business. Tom Bihn’s are a little different, though, with a meticulously thoughtful design that stays comfortable after hours of wear. (The team making the masks wears them in the factory all day.) These quick-drying masks come in two sizes, and feature smart design elements like especially soft and durable ear straps, and a bendable nose bridge fitted with a removable, standard twist tie (like the ones that close plastic bread bags.) Plus, they published the mask pattern with how-to video online , and for every mask sold, the company donates one to a person in need, transparently tracking their donations with a public spreadsheet. The cost is $13 (€11) per mask.

A black mask with elastic ear loops

The Austrian label known for luxe legwear and lingerie is, unsurprisingly, making a stylish and splurge-worthy face mask for high-fliers. The sleek black mask is made with two layers of high-quality, moisture-wicking fabric, an adaptable nose wire, and extra-thin elastic ear bands. Before packaging the masks up, they’re treated with UV light to kill viruses and germs. Expect to pay $35 (€30) per mask.

10 unfolded face masks with different patterns lined up alongside each other

Gap’s budget-friendly sister brand sells packs of 10 face masks for $25 (€21), or $2.50 each. At half the price, they’re still made of breathable, 100% cotton poplin, and have the same pleated design to adapt to (and still cover) tiny faces, making them an especially good pick for kids. The lower price point means stocking up for travel or school is easier on the wallet, and the wide range of fun, colorful patterns makes convincing your tot to use one a little easier.

A white male model wears a black tube scarf that covers his neck, chin and nose

Buff has been selling its “multifunctional headwear” – ie a versatile neck gaiter used by outdoors and sporting enthusiasts as a headband, neck warmer, face covering, etc – long before COVID. But with mask mandates in effect in most places, it’s been adopted by runners and anyone else looking for a supremely comfortable way to adhere. The moisture-wicking fabric is UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) 50, so it protects against sunburn (or chilly cabin temps). They cost $20 (€17) per mask.

Editor's note: A recent study has called into question the effectiveness of gaiters at stopping aerosol droplets.

Three face masks in black, navy and gray

The activewear company specializes in moveable, breathable clothing, so it makes sense it also makes a thoughtfully designed mask. A mesh inner layer is soft on the skin, while a Spandex and Polyester-blend outer layer is lightweight and washable. A disposable filter can be tucked inside the mask’s hidden pocket (not included), and the ingenious ear straps include an extra head strap that can be attached to take pressure off the ear loops, making wearing this for hours a breeze. The cost is $25 (€21) for three masks.

Three face masks with striped patterns

Double-layer masks feature a face-hugging layer made of uber-soft cotton jersey and an upper layer of thick, durable knit made from a blend of cotton, linen, and rayon. Designs are available in cool and classic stripes. For each five-pack sold, Everlane will donate 10% to the non-profit American Civil Liberties Union. These are $25 (€21) for five masks.

Hundreds of sellers sewing up sturdy, well-made masks are part of Etsy, the international marketplace for handcrafted goods. One is Breezemountain8 , with over 1000 five-star reviews for their four-layer cotton masks designed with a nose wire and filter pocket. Users note they’re both comfortable and stylish, with options that include subdued solid shades and lovely floral patterns. These start at $13 (€11) per mask.

A sleep mask is a perfect accessory for travelers who appreciate a little peace and quiet, wherever they may be.

Inexpensive, easy to carry with you, and useful in a wide range of different circumstances, an eye or sleep mask can help shut the world out while you catch some z’s. Not just for sleeping, this travel accessory can help reduce stress levels or even ease away a headache.

Eye masks don’t just help you to nod off to sleep — they also improve the quality of your sleep. Here are some great reasons to keep your eye mask with you at all times:

  • Fall Asleep Quickly — Scientists believe that complete darkness boosts your body’s melatonin level, which helps you to doze off faster.
  • Drop Off Anywhere — Long car rides, airplanes, trains, buses, and even in a city center hotel room — you can beat fatigue by falling asleep virtually anywhere.
  • Beat the Jet Lag —  Combat jet lag by being able to sleep in any time zone. Your sleep mask can help you to sleep at the right times to beat the dreaded jet lag.

Bottom Line: When you’re on the move, being able to rest your mind and your body can make your journey more enjoyable and help you feel fresher when you get there. A sleep mask will help you greatly in this endeavor.

Eye Mask

Shape and Fit

Eye masks are designed to contour perfectly to your face. When you’re looking for the right eye mask for you, seek out ones with molded eye pockets to keep the fabric from sitting directly on your eyelids, which can be uncomfortable.

Eye mask shape and fit

You should also ensure that the mask itself is wide and long enough to cover your eyes completely. If the light still creeps in on the side, it will hit your peripheral vision and make it harder to go to sleep.

Other design touches, like contoured shaping around the bridge of the nose and Velcro straps that allow you to wear the mask without messing up your hair, all make a difference to how much you fall in love with your newest travel accessory.

Fabric and Material

Eye mask material

Your eye mask needs to be thick enough to keep the light out, yet soft and light enough to not put any pressure on your eyelids.

A mask that offers a bit of padding on the sides and around the edges will provide superior comfort. Because your eye mask is likely to be heavily used on your travels, it would also be advantageous to grab one in a material that can stand up to regular washing.

Bottom Line: Silk, cotton, polyester, and even satin are all popular choices for sleep masks, but be sure to check the quality of the seams and washing instructions before you buy.

If a simple sleep mask doesn’t satisfy your needs, try something a little bit extra. Sleep masks can be found with plenty of additional features to help you sleep soundly, wherever you may be. Some come complete with matching earplugs, for complete sensory deprivation, while others offer collagen eye patches to help you awaken looking refreshed and free from puffy eyes and wrinkles.

Consider buying a travel neck pillow to complete your sleep-well-anywhere package.

Hot Tip: If you’re looking to wear your mask for stress or pain relief, you can purchase masks with integrated lavender to keep you calm or cooling patches to help relieve aching heads. You can also find them in designer fabrics, with matching carry cases or even sleepwear, if the look is what you’re all about.

Masks and Respiratory Viruses Prevention

Wearing a mask is an additional prevention strategy that you can choose to further protect yourself and others.

An additional strategy to further protect yourself and others

Additional Strategy. Older man wearing a mask

How it works

Generally, masks can help act as a filter to reduce the number of germs you breathe in or out. Their effectiveness can vary against different viruses, for example, based on the size of the virus. When worn by a person who has a virus, masks can reduce the chances they spread it to others. Masks can also protect wearers from inhaling germs; this type of protection typically comes from better fitting masks (for example, N95 or KN95 respirators).

There are many different types of masks  that have varying abilities to block viruses depending on their design and how well they fit against your face. Cloth masks generally offer lower levels of protection to wearers, surgical/disposable masks usually offer more protection, international filtering facepiece respirators (like KN95 respirators) offer even more, and the most protective respirators are NIOSH Approved® filtering facepiece respirators (like N95® respirators).

Steps you can take

Individuals can

  • When choosing to wear a mask, choose the most protective type you can. Determine how well it fits. Gaps can let air leak in and out. Check for gaps by cupping your hands around the outside edges of the mask. If the mask has a good fit, you will feel warm air come through the front of the mask and may be able to see the mask material move in and out with each breath.
  • Learn about proper technique  for wearing an N95 respirator.

Organizations can

  • Provide free, high-quality masks to your workforce or visitors in times of higher respiratory viral spread.

Key times for prevention

All of the prevention strategies described in this guidance can be helpful to reduce risk. They are especially helpful when:

  • Respiratory viruses are causing a lot of  illness in your community .
  • You or the people around you were recently exposed to a respiratory virus, are sick, or are recovering
  • You or the people around you have  risk factors for severe illness .

CDC offers separate, specific guidance for healthcare settings ( COVID-19 , flu , and  general infection prevention and control ).  Federal civil rights laws  may require reasonable modifications or reasonable accommodations in various circumstances. The Best Sleep Masks For Travel 2024

Reader Mike in Tulsa once sent in this question via email: "Johnny, what is the best sleep mask?" Without a doubt, two of the most important products to bring on a plane are a comfortable eye mask and good earplugs. It’s the secret to a great sleep, especially when you probably just want to get on the plane, fall asleep and wake up when you’re on the ground. RELATED: The Sleep Hack Every Traveler Needs to Know

Of course, everyone is different, so everyone has their own personal preferences but my top choice for a travel sleep mask is this Lewis & Clark mask (pictured above and below). It is super soft and so comfortable, it puts me to sleep in no time. It's also quite thick compared to other sleep masks so it feels like a comfortable pillow on your eyes. It does a great job blocking light out and you'll find it useful on airplanes, in hotel rooms and even at home if you need a little extra help falling asleep. It can be washed by hand.

But it’s not 100% blackout so if you’re looking for something that blocks out all light, consider a Manta sleep mask (pictured below). It doesn’t apply direct pressure on your eyes and offers total blackout. My sister-in-law says this mask was life-changing for her, not just for travel but at home, too. She suffers from migraines and says this mask gives her the complete darkness and comfort she needs when her head is throbbing. For women, it’s also worth noting that the fully adjustable eye cups are raised off the face so it won’t smudge eye makeup.

RELATED: 10 Surefire Tips for Sleeping on a Plane

The good folks at Manta sent me one to try, and I have to say that I really like it. Here are the main features of this sleep mask:

  • 100% blackout: Adjustable eye cups mold perfectly to your face to block 100% of light. True blackout unlocks maximum deep sleep in any environment and any position
  • No eye pressure: Fully adjustable, extra-deep eye cups allow you to blink like you’re not wearing a sleeping mask
  • Totally breathable: The interior of the Manta sleep eye mask is made with cotton for maximum breathability. This means your face is kept cool and won’t overheat on warm nights.
  • Won’t tickle your nose: The adjustable eye contours mold to your face shape and won’t tickle your nose like conventional sleep masks do.
  • No slipping: Silicone grip pads prevent your Manta sleep mask from slipping off your face mid-snooze.
  • Soft elasticized headband: Manta’s headband is elasticized in two places, allowing it to stretch to fit around your head. Limiting the elastic to two small sections is a unique design, which prevents the entire band from stretching loose with use. The strap is made out of plush velour, so it’s soft and comfortable against your head and ears.
  • No more pain: Forget Velcro straps that rip your hair out! Manta utilizes micro Velcro, which doesn’t stick to hair.
  • Lightweight: Manta sleeping eye mask weighs only 30 grams.

Buy the Manta sleep mask on Amazon.

The MZOO sleep mask pictured above is an Amazon bestseller with over 90,000 reviews at the time of publication. Designed with pockets for your eyes, this mask is wider and deeper than most eye masks, which lay flat on your face. Made from low-rebound memory foam, reviewers say this one is soft and comfortable.

What’s your favorite mask to travel with? Share in the comments!

My buddy Dan left a comment about his favorite sleep mask, which is called the MindFold . I purchased it but didn't love it. However, other readers have recommended it, too, so check out the reviews to see what you think.

‘Cocktails and Masks Don’t Really Go Together’

Young Russians are partying again, seeking a return to normal life and willing to risk a coronavirus surge. “We are people, not robots, and want to have a life,” said a bar patron (and doctor).

MOSCOW — When Nest, a cramped Moscow cocktail lounge, reopened for business in late June after more than two months of lockdown, it offered free masks and antiseptic lotion at the entrance to help calm any fears drinkers might have about sitting just inches from each other around tiny round tables.

It needn’t have bothered.

“Nobody could care less so we quickly stopped offering,” said Roman R. Pometkov, the head bartender and a coronavirus survivor. He became infected soon after the pandemic first hit the Russian capital with full force in March and now, after recuperating in isolation at home for 28 days, is back at work.

Like everyone else in his packed bar on a recent evening, Mr. Pometkov was not wearing a face mask. “Everyone just wants to get back to a normal life,” he said. “Cocktails and masks don’t really go together.”

Following a path taken by many people in Florida, Texas and other parts of the United States in early summer, Moscow and most of Russia in recent weeks have thrown caution to the wind.

Even restrictions that technically remain in force, like mandatory mask- and glove-wearing in the Moscow subway and on city buses, are mostly ignored. The authorities are making little effort to enforce them, though a few random people have been fined.

“That’s not my department,” answered a gruff turnstile guard on Monday when asked what the rules are.

The Moscow city government led the way in sounding the alarm over the pandemic in Russia and imposed draconian controls in late March, which were largely observed, at least at the start.

Muscovites were ordered to stay at home except to buy food and medicine or to walk their dogs within 100 yards of home. All restaurants and bars were shut down, and masks and gloves were mandatory for anyone venturing out, a rule the police enforced with vigor.

But on July 24, the city hosted a party in Gorky Park for recently graduated high school students. More than 10,000 young people attended, virtually all without masks, for a long night of dancing, hugging and boisterous close-quarters celebration.

Schools across Russia have been told to reopen for the new school year on Sept 1. Traffic on the Moscow subway, which plunged by 85 percent at the peak of the crisis, has bounced back to near normal levels, with more than 5.4 million passengers riding trains on Tuesday, a post-lockdown record.

Unlike the Sun Belt in the United States , however, Russia has so far seen no surge in new cases, at least according to official statistics. The daily infection rate nationwide has hovered between 5,000 and 6,000 cases ever since President Vladimir V. Putin last month declared the battle against the pandemic won.

Mr. Putin pressed ahead with a huge, mask-free military parade in Red Square on June 24, and seven days of nationwide voting through July 1 on constitutional amendments that allow him to stay in power until 2036 .

Kremlin critics say the figures are being massaged to avoid exposing Mr. Putin’s confidence as premature. And there are some small signs, even in the official numbers, of possible trouble ahead.

The daily number of new infections in Moscow, after falling steadily to 530 in mid July, has started inching up, rising to 695 on Friday. This is a big improvement on the more than 6,000 cases reported each day in the Russian capital at the peak of the outbreak in May — and a far cry from the more than 50,000 new cases reported each day this week in the United States — but the upward trend in Moscow, if it continues and accelerates, could quickly undo progress.

The Moscow city government on Friday warned of stiff fines for not wearing masks on public transport and in shops.

The mayor of Norilsk, an industrial city in the Arctic, resigned recently after accusing regional officials of underreporting coronavirus figures. He said the real number of cases was more than twice the official count.

But others are more sanguine, and in a country long accustomed to calamity, any worries Russians have of an American-style fiasco have been far outweighed by delight at the end of restrictions.

Recent reports of a rash of infections among celebrities prompted more jokes than cries of alarm. Eljay, a popular rap musician, described his own infection with the coronavirus over the weekend with a gleeful message to his more than four million followers on Instagram : “I have a corona so I am the king. And if I am king we have a future.”

While not politicized as it has been in the United States, mask-wearing is seen as seriously uncool among young people and by many older men, whose often reckless disregard for health warnings, public health experts agree, is reflected in their average life expectancy of 67 years. Some hip restaurants popular with youth have even started banning masks.

When Kristina Orbakaite, a Russian pop star, posted a photograph of herself wearing a designer mask on Instagram, she incited a storm of protest from fans who accused her, variously, of spreading panic, empty virtue signaling and pandering to the “herd instinct of Russian show business.”

The criticism became so vicious that Ms. Orbakaite, whose mother, Alla Pugacheva, is an elderly but still hugely popular Russian singer, posted an audio message to her “dear subscribers and haters.” In it, she expressed dismay that her fashion statement in favor of good hygiene had prompted “such a violent reaction” and explained that wearing a mask might not save the wearer but does protect others from infection.

“Frankly, I am discouraged,” she said.

Russia’s macho leader , Mr. Putin, while avoiding health hazards like guzzling vodka that have traditionally been seen as marks of manliness in Russia, has outdone even President Trump in shunning the face mask. The only time he has appeared in public with his face covered was in March when he visited a Moscow coronavirus clinic wearing a respirator and a hazmat suit.

Polina Fedotova, a 27-year-old customer at the Nest cocktail bar, said she has many friends in the United States, so is well aware of what she called the “hellish” situation there. While not entirely confident Russia won’t end up in the same place, she has decided that the benefits of having a normal life far outweigh any potential risks.

“It is better to get out and live normally and perhaps even get sick than to stay at home forever doing nothing,” she said.

Ms. Fedotova’s companion for an evening of cocktails was a 28-year-old doctor who works at a large Moscow hospital and who contracted the virus, but barely had any symptoms and has now recovered.

“It was not so bad,” said the doctor, who declined to give her last name. “We are people, not robots, and want to have a life.”

Younger Russians, often highly skeptical of all official claims, have been the most eager to embrace the idea that the danger has passed or at least that, whatever the risks, they are worth taking.

Yuri Kravchenko, the manager of Pod Mukhoi, a popular basement bar in central Moscow, said “people are frightened deep down but the desire for a normal life is just too strong.”

He wears a mask himself and has had all his serving staff tested for the virus, one of whom found out that he had had the virus without knowing it.

None of his customers on a recent weekend, packed on stools at the crowded wooden bar and huddled shoulder-to-shoulder around tables in the dining area, had a mask.

Among them was a group of students from the Plekhanov Russian University of Economics. They were celebrating the end of their course work, done mostly online for the past three months, and the chance to meet face-to-face for the first time since early spring.

Elizaveta Kolesnik, 21, said she had been in France when the pandemic arrived in Europe and been so frightened that she rushed back to Moscow just before Russia closed its borders. After more than two months cooped up at home in Moscow, however, she has put aside her earlier fear, deciding that “fate will decide what happens now” and “if you are afraid you only lose what life has to give.”

Francesco Spatola, an Italian-Russian classmate, said he has no faith at all in official statistics but is happy to go along with the authorities’ rosy story line. He also sees no point in trying to resist the forces of nature.

“It is sad to say,” he said, “but it is natural that people die.”

Long trip to europe 4 ways to stay healthy while traveling.

Here are some tips for how to stay healthy while traveling around Europe.

Plenty of travelers will undertake a trip of a lifetime to Europe this year, spending weeks or months on the continent, hopping between countries and cities. Long trips can take their toll on mental and physical health but there are some precautions you can take and items you can pack to keep you feeling at the top of your vacation game. “The demands of constantly navigating different time zones, climates and destinations require us to be proactive in caring for our health and wellbeing while traveling,” says Jessica Sepel, founder of Australian wellness brand JSHealth Vitamins . Here are some tips for how to stay healthy while traveling around Europe.

Invest In A Refillable Water Bottle

Staying hydrated is key to feeling energetic and keeping your immune system healthy. It is also vital to avoid heatstroke when you’re spending hours under the hot sun sightseeing and can help combat jetlag. In Europe, tap water is generally safe to drink (although always double-check first) while many cities have public drinking fountains. This means it is convenient, eco-friendly and money-saving to invest in a refillable water bottle and bring it around with you instead of buying dozens of plastic single-use bottles. Sepel also warns travelers to be aware of alcohol intake on the plane. “Be sure to drink more water if you do choose to sip on a bubbly while in the skies,” she says,

Bring Nutritional Supplements

If you’re moving around a lot and sampling myriad cuisines, it’s natural for your dietary habits to go out the window. To avoid feeling sluggish or under the weather, bring a few key health supplements. Sepel recommends JSHealth’s Greens + Collagen as a convenient way to keep up nutrient intake when traveling as diets may look a little different with less home cooking. It contains green superfoods along with hydrolysed Marine Collagen. She adds a formula with a B vitamin complex for energy, stamina and recovery (it also helps with jetlag) and zinc to keep immunity strong. “If you experience bloating, a supplement with fennel seed is a great addition,” Sepel says. “I always have the Detox + Debloat tablets on hand when I travel to help relieve abdominal bloating while also supporting natural detoxification processes.”

Buy A Travel Pillow, Headphones And Eye Mask

If you are moving between locations in Europe, take advantage of flights and trains for some shuteye. Whether it’s a plump travel pillow, noise-cancelling headphones or velvet eye mask, bring whatever helps you drift off while on the move. A pair of earplugs isn’t a bad idea either and might come in handy in a thin-walled hotel room too. The help reset a sleep schedule disrupted by moving between time zones, Sepel recommends napping for about 3 hours on arrival, then trying to get up and carry on in the current time zone. “If you can then plan to go to bed at 7 pm, you should acclimate more easily and are then on track for the rest of your trip,” she says. Try taking a quality magnesium supplement at night to allow your nervous system to relax and wake up energised and refreshed.”

Pack A Medicine Bag

Traipsing around pharmacies is no way to spend a day on holiday, especially if a language barrier means struggling to find the medicine you need. Prior to your trip, pack a little bag of useful remedies including painkillers, anti-diarrhoea medication, antihistamines, plasters, decongestants, insect bite cream and motion sickness pills.

‘yellowstone’ star ‘kicked off’ flight for allegedly refusing to sit next to passenger wearing a mask.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

Forrie J. Smith claimed he was kicked off a flight after refusing to be seated next to a passenger wearing a face mask.

The “Yellowstone” actor was stranded in a Houston, Texas airport when he shared his story on an Instagram video for his half-a-million followers.

“You need to hear this story,” he captioned the short clip alongside the hashtags #cowboy #country #western #yellowstone #yellowstonetv.

“You know my social media people tell me that you like me face to face, but you know what I can’t say face to face what I want,” Smith started.

“I just got kicked off a plane, and … where the hell am I at – Houston, Texas – because I told them I didn’t feel comfortable sitting next to somebody with a mask on.”

Smith continued, “Ya, I’ve been drinking. I’ve been sitting in an airport for three hours. Ya I’m drinking. I ain’t drunk, but they throw me off the plane because I’m drunk, because you people won’t stand up and tell everybody what bulls–t this is.

Forrie J. Smith was stranded in a Houston, Texas airport.

“I just told them I didn’t feel comfortable about sitting next to somebody that had to wear a mask, and I’m off the plane.”

It’s not clear what airline Smith was traveling on and why he was removed from the flight.

Smith’s representatives did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.

Forrie J. Smith said he was booted off the flight because he didn't feel comfortable sitting next to somebody with a mask on.

In 2022, Smith was forced to miss the Screen Actor’s Guild awards due to strict protocols requiring guests to be vaccinated against the coronavirus.

Organizers required attendees to not only be vaccinated, but to also have a booster shot and provide a negative COVID-19 test within 48 hours of the show. Attendees were also required to wear a mask.

“I want to apologize to y’all for not being at the Screen Actors Guild Awards,” Smith told his Instagram followers in a since-deleted video. “I mean no offense to anyone. I’m not vaccinated, and it’s a requirement to be vaccinated.”

Details on what airline the Yellowstone star was traveling on and why he was removed from the flight is unknown.

He added, I will not get vaccinated. I haven’t been vaccinated since I was a little kid. I don’t vaccinate my dogs, I don’t vaccinate my horses. I’ve never had a flu shot. Never will. I believe they compromise your immunities.”

Smith, who plays the role of Lloyd Pierce on the series, said he had planned on walking the red carpet at the awards show but just doesn’t “believe in that stuff.”

Is Moscow Safe? Crime Rates & Safety Report

Moscow, Russia

On Feb. 24, 2022, Russia invaded its neighbor country Ukraine, starting a war between these two countries.

This act of invasion caused many Ukrainians to flee their country and seek shelter in places like Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, etc…

At this time, we recommend no travel to Russia or Ukraine, or any neighboring countries for your own safety.

Russia : Safety by City

  • Yekaterinburg

Moscow, the capital of Russia, is a political, scientific, historical, architectural and business center of this huge country.

It’s one of the most visited places in Russia, and for good reason.

The best-known parts of Russia are concentrated precisely in the urban areas and cities like Moscow and Saint Petersburg.

Moscow’s history attracts the most tourists, as they are fascinated by it is a surreal and sometimes brutal but nevertheless thrilling and jaw-dropping national story.

In this city, visited by 17 million tourists annually, the history, told in its numerous museums, some of which are the world’s greatest, interacts with modernity.

For example, in the Garden of Fallen Monuments (Fallen Monument Park), you can see entire clusters of modern art contrasting with the very non-conceptual Communist monuments.

  • Warnings & Dangers in Moscow

OVERALL RISK: MEDIUM

Generally speaking, Moscow today is safe as much as other cities in Europe, despite its problematic history with criminal activity in the 90s. However, if you’re planning on traveling to Moscow, keep in mind that you should always keep your guard up and remain aware of your surroundings, just in case.

TRANSPORT & TAXIS RISK: LOW

Generally speaking, transportation in Moscow is safe, but you should bear in mind that kidnappings have been known to happen, mostly in unlicensed taxis, so be careful when hailing one on the streets. Keep in mind that the most dangerous areas where small crime tends to occur are the underground walkways, called “perekhods”. Only use official services like Yandex Taxi, Uber or Gett taxi.

PICKPOCKETS RISK: HIGH

Pickpocketing is very common in Moscow, and surprisingly it is mostly performed by groups of children. Pay attention to your belongings, don’t leave them in plain sight and be especially careful in crowded places like stations or near tourist attractions.

NATURAL DISASTERS RISK: LOW

Moscow isn’t particularly susceptible to natural disasters. Some blizzards and snowstorms are possible during winter which can affect the traffic and delay your flights. During winter, be prepared to face the below-freezing temperatures.

MUGGING RISK: MEDIUM

The situation improved drastically when it comes to kidnappings and muggings. Generally, never accept free drinks or food when you’re in a club or a bar. Drink spiking and then attacking and robbing the victim have been reported on numerous occasions.

TERRORISM RISK: HIGH

After the recent terrorist attack in the subway in St. Petersburg the probability of this situation happening again in Moscow is very high.

SCAMS RISK: HIGH

There are many scams in Moscow, usually performed by children trying to distract you and then steal some money from you. Never talk to strange kids on the street. Also, you should avoid playing street gambling games.

WOMEN TRAVELERS RISK: LOW

Women are generally safe in Moscow, though you should avoid finding yourself alone in clubs or bars, and of course, apply all normal precaution measures like avoiding remote and poorly lit streets and areas.

  • So... How Safe Is Moscow Really?

Moscow experienced a rise when it came to crime rates during the 1990s.

Violent crime, as well as petty crime and scams,  had increased, but the biggest part of the violence was within the criminal groups themselves, and it didn’t affect foreigners that much.

However, it decreased since the 90s, so right now, for tourists, Moscow isn’t more dangerous than any other European city, it’s even less so.

The crime rate in Moscow is fairly lower than one in New York, London or Paris, so you should feel safe here.

Also, you can count on the officials to be uncorrupted – don’t ever try to bribe them: you will be charged with bribery.

Bear in mind that if you are a member of the LGBT community, there is no reason to avoid Moscow altogether but you should refrain from any public displays of affection.

As of June 2013, “homosexual propaganda to minors” is prohibited, which means that any discussion of gay rights or homosexuality issues in the presence of minors is punishable by law.

While you walk around Moscow, you might encounter police officials that may demand to see your papers to check if you have been registered within 7 business days of your arrival into Moscow.

You shouldn’t have any problems with this, because if you stay in a hotel then you are automatically registered and will be handed a confirmation paper.

  • How Does Moscow Compare?
  • Useful Information

Most countries do need a visa to enter Russia, and if you’re a U.S. citizen you must possess both a valid U.S. passport and a bona fide visa issued by a Russian Embassy or Consulate. None of the nationals that do need a visa can acquire one upon arrival, so make sure you apply for your visa in advance. If you are not sure about your visa status, visit www.doyouneedvisa.com which will let you know whether or not you need visa based on your nationality and the country you want to visit.

The Russian ruble is the official currency in Moscow. ATMs are widespread throughout the country and credit cards are accepted everywhere.

Moscow has a highly continental influenced climate characterized by warm to hot and dry summers and extremely cold, freezing winters with temperatures as low as -30°C – sometimes even lower, with heavy snowfall.

Sheremetyevo International Airport is the Russian busiest international airport. It is located in Molzhaninovsky District, Northern Administrative Okrug, in Moscow, about 29 km northwest of central Moscow.

Travel Insurance

Just like anywhere else, we advise getting travel insurance when traveling to Moscow, because it would cover not only medical problems but also theft and loss of valuables.

That's just not true.

The person who wrote the text obviously have never been in Moscow and in Russia at all. This is ridiculous. Even about pickpocketing, the risk at most is medium, mugging is zero in historical places but is pretty high in sleeping quarters

Your rating is only two stars for safety though? So I am confused. Are you rating the article to be in poor taste?

I went to Moscow in 2021. I enjoyed the trip. I felt there were “unsafe areas” so I avoided them. So long as you know where you are going and don’t insult the locals, you should be fine.

51% safe?! Is this out of date?

Moscow and Russia in general are MUCH SAFER than Paris or London, yet those latter are more than 15 points ahead?!

Hell, it’s even admitted in the above text: “Moscow isn’t more dangerous than any other European city, IT’S EVEN LESS SO.” Yeah, you bet! And then: “the crime rate in Moscow is fairly lower than one in New York, London or Paris, so you should feel safe here.” So why the low rating? I don’t get it.

Also, the latest terrorist attack in Moscow happened in 2010… so how can you honestly say that the risk is still “high”? Especially for the fact Russia is very much on the edge when it comes to fighting terrorism domestically and over the world.

Sure, it might not be ideal everywhere in Moscow, but it’s WAY SAFER than in Paris, especially at night. You just can’t go out in Paris after the evening anymore, in most areas (I got assaulted for no reason at Châtelet-les-Halles and taking the RER train at dark is becoming more and more risky)… while in Moscow, chances are that you’ll see girls in miniskirts walking home while quietly singing. Or maybe you’ll stumble upon some gorgeous lady asking you for a lighter and then giving you her number for a coffee the next day. So very dangerous!

I sense a serious bias, here. Is it because of that LGBT thing? Could you pick a more extreme case? Yeah, you can totally be gay in Russia, just be so in private. There even are transsexuals, but this is a traditional and respectable country, so you should respect their choice of not publicizing various sexual lifestyles.

Moscow and Saint Petersburg are safe

Moscow and Saint Petersburg are very safe in my opinion! I’ve been to both cities visiting family! There are so many people out on the streets and on public transportation- I felt very safe! You need to change your ratings!!

Any update on Covid-19 to visit Moscow

I visited 118 country and Moscow one of the safest city I have been, st Petersburg as well, I read this article hoping to find any update on covid-19 restrictions upon arrival, so if anyone can update I’m planning to visit Moscow again but I need to know if quarentain is required or mandatory, anyone can share, cheers.

In Russia nobody cares, masks off. I dont know if fiew thousands of infected per day are high for you though. I was never arrested for not wearing mask, but you have to have it on you. Sometimes cops ask to put mask, you just do that and everything ok, some shops can refuse to do service if you dont have mask. I assume they pressured by boss, so just put on mask, they can give you gloves and dont cause any problems.

Written by someone who never visited Russia

A veer biased review. Moscow or St. Petersburg for being such brilliant truly cosmopolitan cities are extremely safe. Pickpocketing in Russia?! By children?! Who wrote this? Clearly by someone who has never been to the great country of Russia.

Have never been there. But wish me well

Bias review, Moscow is much safer than that!

This review is so bias and just wrong! First of all apart from being a political, scientific and etc center, it is an absolutely beautiful city and a very culturally rich city. For tourists there’s a huge range of delicious food, amazing shopping, a lot of cultural activities, and all sorts of entertainment. I’ve travelled there in December 2019, and most of the time I spent walking around and exploring by myself, be it during day time or night, nothing happened to me once. I mostly used subways and sometimes taxi, both safe. Just have a common sense when it comes to safety and you’ll be fine. You need to travel there at least once in a lifetime, it’s a completely different experience and it’s a beautiful one, NOT a communistic terrorist epicenter as some describe it to be.
