While Miami is known as the cruise capital of the world, another cruise port in Florida shouldn’t be forgotten. Port Canaveral is the second busiest cruise port. In fact, it processes over 4.5 million passengers each year with more growth on the horizon.

If you are planning a cruise from this eastern Florida location, we have our complete Guide to the Port Canaveral Cruise Port to help answer many frequently asked questions.

Top Things to Do Near Port Canaveral, Florida on a Cruise

Cruise Lines That Sail From Port Canaveral

The Port Canaveral Cruise Port has five main cruise terminals, with the new Terminal 3 scheduled to debut. This terminal is ready and waiting to process passengers sailing on the brand new Carnival Mardi Gras once cruising resumes.

When arriving at the Port Canaveral Cruise Terminal for your cruise, there will be large electronic signs directing passengers to the correct terminals.

For a general sense of the area, the port is divided into North and South sides. The North side, or A terminals, include terminals 5, 6, 8, and 10. The South side, or B terminals, include 1, 2, and 3.

Port Canaveral Cruise Port

Cruise Terminal 1 is the location for most Royal Caribbean cruise ships that sail from Port Canaveral. Currently, Royal Caribbean has plans for Allure of the Seas, Harmony of the Seas , Independence of the Seas, and Mariner of the Seas to cruise from Port Canaveral.

Cruise Terminal 3 is the brand new cruise terminal set to process Carnival Mardi Gras passengers. This $163 million project includes a 188,000 square foot terminal and an adjacent garage accommodating 1,800 cars.

Cruise Terminals 5 and 6 also primarily service Carnival Cruise Line, as this brand usually has the most ships sailing out of Port Canaveral. Currently, Carnival plans to have Elation, Liberty, and Magic sailing from this cruise port.

This is of course in addition to the brand new Mardi Gras.

Cruise Terminal 8 is where Disney Cruise Line’s ships depart. Given Port Canaveral’s proximity to Walt Disney World in Orlando, it’s no surprise that Disney Cruise Line would have a few ships in this location.

Currently, Disney Cruise Line is scheduled to sail Disney Dream and Fantasy from Port Canaveral.

Cruise Terminal 10 services Norwegian Cruise Line. According to Norwegian Cruise Line’s website, Norwegian Escape is the only ship currently scheduled to sail from Port Canaveral once cruising resumes.

Of note, MSC Cruises will begin sailing from Port Canaveral for the first time as well. This cruise line will offer sailings on Seaside and Divina from Port Canaveral beginning in 2021.

Flying to Port Canaveral for a Cruise

Port Canaveral’s not far from the Bahamas. So, this cruise port is popular for short 3 and 4-day cruises. These cruises often visit cruise line private islands such as Royal Caribbean’s Perfect Day at CocoCay ,.

Several popular cruises also visit Norwegian Cruise Line’s Great Stirrup Cay , or Disney’s Castaway Cay.

While many Florida locals do drive to the port, many cruisers still fly here for cruise vacations. The closest airport to Port Canaveral is MCO. Orlando International Airport hosts plenty of airlines from destinations across the country.

Port Canaveral Cruise Port

So, you shouldn’t have a problem finding a flight.

This airport is located approximately 45 minutes from Port Canaveral. Thus, you should plan your flights appropriately if you plan to fly in the day of your cruise.

Though, we never recommend doing so. We always recommend cruisers fly the day before to avoid any potential travel delays.

Related Post: How to Budget for a Cruise

Once you arrive at the airport, you will have several transportation methods. Some of these options will depend on whether you fly in the day before or the day of your cruise.

Transportation to and from the Port Canaveral Cruise Port

As mentioned previously, if you live within driving distance of Port Canaveral, you will likely be driving to the cruise terminal. If you are driving, we will discuss parking options a bit later. However, there are several other transportation options available.

If you are arriving the day of your cruise, a cruise line transfer from the airport might be the easiest option, though likely not the cheapest.

Many cruise lines offer an option to book this transportation pre-cruise. Once at the airport, a cruise line representative will greet you at baggage claim and escort you and your luggage to the check-in area. After checking-in, you will board the next departing bus to the ship.

Disney Cruise Line Motorcoach

These transfers will run upwards of $35 per person and do run on set time schedules.

There are also several independent shuttle options. These shuttle options may include shuttles from the airport to the cruise terminal and/or hotel shuttles from the airport. These shuttle services tend to be cheaper than transportation arranged through the cruise line.

Some of these options include Contrans Shuttle Service , Cocoa Beach Shuttle , and Mears Transportation . Of course, some hotels themselves offer transportation, sometimes complimentary, from the airport. Most often, these shuttles are a shared service and run on a set time schedule.

SAVE ON BAHAMAS CRUISES FOR 2022!

Shared Ride Services are probably the most popular form of transportation in recent years. Popular apps like Uber and Lyft are allowed to pick-up/drop-off passengers at both the airport and the cruise port.

The cost of using these services varies base on the type of vehicle you choose but average between $60-$90. So, depending on your party size and amount of luggage, this option may or may not save you money. While Uber or Lyft are convenient and often cheaper, the issue is quality control among drivers.

Related Post: Do I Need a Passport to Cruise?

GoPort is another nice option offering packages that can include hotel accommodations, airport transportation, and cruise transfers for one set price. The company also offers shared shuttle service from the airport to the cruise port for as low as $19.99.

Parking at the Port Canaveral Cruise Port

If you are driving to the Port Canaveral Cruise Port, the Official Port Canaveral Cruise Parking is the most convenient option available. This “official” cruise parking is the only area directly adjacent to each of Port Canaveral’s cruise terminals.

With this option, you can park at your cruise terminal’s designated parking garage and simply take a short walk to your ship. The current parking rate is $17 per day, including day of arrival and day of departure.

Cruise News June 12, 2016

The Port does not own or operate any off-site parking facilities. Though, independent off-site parking lots can be a cheaper option. This will entail taking a shuttle from the lot to the cruise terminal.

One of these options is the GoPort Plaza . Packages start at a flat fee of $55, plus $5 for each additional traveler. For a week-long cruise for two, this would be over 50% savings.

Park Port Canaveral and Canaveral Cruise Parking are other options as well.

Of course, if you opt for a pre-cruise stay in a hotel, many hotels also offer cruise and stay packages which can include parking.

Hotels Near Port Canaveral Cruise Terminal

When preparing for your cruise, you should consider planning a pre-cruise stay before the vacation.

When cruising from Port Canaveral, you will have a number of hotel options. You could opt to stay closer to the Orlando airport and make the commute to the port in the morning.

Or, you could choose a hotel that is located closer to the port or nearby Cocoa Beach. Better yet, you could spend a few days at Disney World or Universal Studios before your cruise.

Given the proximity to Orlando, one of the obvious choices is to visit your favorite theme park. Walt Disney World and Universal Studios are both located about an hour away. Walt Disney World is home to the popular Magic Kingdom theme park and Epcot which hosts various festivals throughout the year like the Food and Wine Festival. Norwegian Escape rejoins Port Canaveral cruise lineup, giving port record fifth brand

Norwegian Cruise Line this month resumed sailings from Port Canaveral, becoming the record fifth cruise line with one or more ships based there.

Norwegian joins Carnival, Disney, MSC and Royal Caribbean with ships sailing from Brevard County's seaport. MSC is a new brand at Port Canaveral. The others have been long-standing players at the port.

Norwegian is resuming voyages from Port Canaveral aboard the Norwegian Escape, with sailings to the Eastern Caribbean.

For the winter sailing season, the Norwegian Escape offers seven-day voyages from Port Canaveral to the Eastern Caribbean, visiting such ports as Tortola in the British Virgin Islands, St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands and Great Stirrup Cay, the company’s private island in the Bahamas.

On Dec. 23, the ship will sail on a special 11-day holiday cruise, visiting nine ports of call. Passengers will celebrate Christmas Day in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, and New Year’s Eve in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, before continuing their voyage to Bridgetown, Barbados, and St. John’s Antigua.

The Escape, which was built in 2015, has a double-occupancy capacity of 4,266 and a crew of 1,733.

The Norwegian Escape — the first of the brand’s "Breakaway Plus Class" ships — becomes the eighth vessel in the company’s 17-ship fleet to resume operations after cruises were shut down because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"We're excited that Norwegian's finally back," Port Canaveral Chief Executive Officer John Murray said.

Additionally, starting in December 2022, Norwegian will be bringing its new Norwegian Prima to Port Canaveral, after the ship debuts with sailings in Europe next spring.

From Dec. 11, 2022, to March 19, 2023, Norwegian Prima will sail 15 Western Caribbean voyages from Port Canaveral, featuring five-, seven- and nine-day itineraries. Ports of call will include Cozumel, Mexico; Ocho Rios, Jamaica; Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands; and Great Stirrup Cay.

Murray said this will be the first time Norwegian will be bringing a new ship to Port Canaveral.

"That's another great win for our port in the future — to have a brand-new ship from Norwegian Cruise Line," Murray said.

The return of one of its ships to Port Canaveral is part of what Norwegian is calling its "Great Cruise Comeback" to redeploy its fleet.

More: Port Canaveral returns to profitability after cruises resume, after 16 months of losses

That effort began on July 25, when Norwegian Jade was the first vessel to set sail with seven-day itineraries to the Greek Isles after a 500-day suspension. Since then, the brand has relaunched seven more ships, with more to resume operations in December and into 2022.

“We have welcomed back more than 110,000 guests worldwide as part of our global redeployment efforts,” Norwegian Cruise Lines President and Chief Executive Officer Harry Sommer said, in announcing the line's plans for Port Canaveral. “Our Great Cruise Comeback stems beyond the relaunch of our vessels, but also the return of our shipboard team members who have been excited to return to deliver unforgettable vacations experiences to our guests.”

Port Canaveral's lineup

In addition to the Norwegian Escape, cruise ships now based at Port Canaveral include:

Carnival: The Carnival Elation, Magic and Mardi Gras.

The Mardi Gras is the newest and largest ship in Carnival's fleet, and the first cruise ship based in North or South America to be powered by liquefied natural gas.

"It's an exciting ship," Murray said. "It's the pride of their fleet right now. It's a great addition to Port Canaveral, and we're proud to have her."

A fourth Carnival ship, the Liberty, with join the Port Canaveral lineup in February.

Disney: The Disney Dream and Fantasy.

A new Disney ship, the Wish, will arrive at Port Canaveral in May and begin revenue sailings in June. Like the Mardi Gras, the Wish is powered by liquefied natural gas.

MSC: The MSC Divina. That ship will be temporarily replaced by a newer and larger MSC ship, the MSC Meraviglia, after this month, for the winter season.

"Two great, exciting, new MSC vessels, and a whole new brand for the port, which is great news for us," Murray said.

Royal Caribbean: The Royal Caribbean Harmony of the Seas, Independence of the Seas and Mariner of the Seas, marking the first time Port Canaveral has had three Royal Caribbean ships based there year-round.

In addition, the Victory 1 gambling ship offers twice-daily excursions from Port Canaveral.

Increased ship capacity

Murray noted that the multiday cruise ship capacity out of Port Canaveral has increased from its the pre-pandemic counts.

For example, Port Canaveral expects 779 ship calls at Port Canaveral in the current budget year that began Oct. 1 and runs through Sept. 30, 2022, with a total passenger capacity of 6.6 million.

But Port Canaveral is budgeting an average of 62% occupancy on its cruise ships for fiscal 2022, or about 4.1 million multiday passengers, anticipating that cruise lines will keep passenger counts relatively low to help maintain social distancing on the ships. It budgeted the ships to sail at 50% capacity from October through December, then at 75% capacity from January through September 2022.

"We were very conservative on our budget going forward," Murray said. "No one was really sure how fast the cruise industry would return."

The 2021-22 projections compare with 689 calls during the fiscal year that ran from Oct. 1, 2018, through Sept. 30, 2019, with total capacity of 5.0 million passengers. Actual passenger count that year — the last full year of sailings before the pandemic shut down cruising in March 2020 — was about 4.7 million, or 94% available capacity.

All but two of the current Port Canaveral-based ships have a passenger capacity of more than 4,000.

"We've got big ships here at Port Canaveral now, and a lot of capacity to fill," Murray said. "That is a great opportunity for us to move those (passenger) numbers up. The cruise lines have committed some very important new and exciting assets to this port, and our job is to keep them and continue to grow their businesses."

Canaveral Port Authority Chairman Wayne Justice said Port Canaveral management and staff have kept the port "on a steady course through some pretty rough waters" during the pandemic.

"And we're heading on to a brighter horizon," Justice said. "The future of the cruise industry continues to get brighter and grow worldwide. Larger, more exciting ships are sailing with more cruise guests, state-of-the-art security and leading-edge technology. And this port is at front-and-center of all that."

Norwegian Escape Begins Cruises From Port Canaveral, Florida

As Norwegian Escape cruises from Port Canaveral on November 13, 2021,  the departure marks the cruise line’s much anticipated return to Florida’s Space Coast. With the addition of this new ship, Caribbean cruise options from the Space Coast are really starting to grow.

It’s been a few years since Norwegian Cruise Line had a ship home-based at conveniently located Port Canaveral . The last one I remember was when I cruised aboard Norwegian Sun , one of my favorite “small” ships in their fleet.

Norwegian Cruise Line announced the continuation of its Great Cruise Comeback celebration with cruises aboard Norwegian Escape from Port Canaveral Florida to the Eastern Caribbean.

Norwegian Escape is the first of the cruise line’s popular Breakaway Plus Class ships and is the eighth Norwegian Cruise Line cruise ship to resume operations. There are 17 cruise ships in the NCL fleet.

“We have welcomed back more than 110,000 guests worldwide as part of our global redeployment efforts,” said Harry Sommer, president and chief executive officer of Norwegian Cruise Line. “Our Great Cruise Comeback stems beyond the relaunch of our vessels but also the return of our shipboard team members who have been excited to return to deliver unforgettable vacations experiences to our guests.”

Port Canaveral saw its first Norwegian Cruise Line ship return to service over the weekend when Norwegian Escap e resumed sailings from Central Florida. Escape is now the eighth ship to return to cruising in the 17-ship fleet.

Norwegian Escape

“We have welcomed back more than 110,000 guests worldwide as part of our global redeployment efforts,” said Harry Sommer, president and chief executive officer of Norwegian Cruise Line. “Our Great Cruise Comeback stems beyond the relaunch of our vessels but also the return of our shipboard team members who have been excited to return to deliver unforgettable vacations experiences to our guests.”

READ: After 20-months, Carnival Restarts Service from Tampa, Florida

Norwegians’ comeback to redeploy its entire fleet began on July 25, 2021, when Norwegian Jade was the first vessel to set sail with seven-day itineraries to the Greek Isles after a 500-day suspension of service. A couple of weeks later, Encore began sailing seven-night Alaska cruises from Seattle. The line hopes to have all 17 ships back in service by spring 2022.

Since the cruise industry restart, Port Canaveral has already seen Carnival Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, Disney, and MSC Cruises sailing, with Norwegian becoming the fifth operator to return.

The fleetwide redeployment will continue in partnership with local governments and is guided by the protocols of the Sail Safe health and safety program, which at its cornerstone requires that all crew and guests must be fully vaccinated to embark on all NCL voyages for the foreseeable future.

Third Norwegian Escape cruise from Port Canaveral canceled by continuing ship repairs

norwegian escape cruise terminal port canaveral

For the third straight week, Norwegian Cruise Line has canceled its seven-night sailing of the Norwegian Escape out of Port Canaveral

The ship continues to undergo repairs near Port Canaveral's Cruise Terminal 5 after an incident that occurred while the Escape was leaving a port in the Dominican Republic.

The Escape ran aground on March 14 while leaving the Dominican port of Puerto Plata, sustaining what the cruise line initially described as "minor damage."

The damage forced the cruise line to cut short its March 12-19 cruise — which was carrying 3,157 passengers — and to cancel its March 19-26 and March 26-April 2 cruises out of Port Canaveral. Now, Norwegian says the April 2-9 sailing out of Port Canaveral also is canceled.

Mishap in Dominican Republic: Norwegian Escape cancels sailing out of Port Canaveral after ship runs aground in Dominican Republic

The cruise line has not disclosed the passenger counts for the three canceled cruises. But this is a peak time for cruising, so the figure could have been 3,000 or more per sailing.

The Norwegian Escape — which was built in 2015 — has a double-occupancy capacity of 4,266 and a crew of 1,733.

In an email to passengers booked on the April 2 sailing, Katty Bird, the cruise line's  senior vice president of guest services, wrote: "We are so very sorry to inform you that the repairs onboard Norwegian Escape will take longer than originally expected, and, as a result, your voyage onboard Norwegian Escape April 2, 2022, has been canceled. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this may cause, as we understand that now, more than ever, the desire to travel and reconnect with the places and people we've missed most."

Norwegian offered passengers the option of sailing on one of four Norwegian Cruise Line seven-night cruises leaving this weekend from other ports, plus a 100% credit on the price of their Escape booking that can be used for second Norwegian cruise sailing by April 11, 2023. The cruise bookings for this weekend that were offered were:

  • Norwegian Joy leaving Saturday from Miami.
  • Norwegian Breakaway leaving Sunday from New Orleans.
  • Norwegian Dawn leaving Sunday from Tampa.
  • Norwegian Encore leaving Sunday from Miami.

As an alternative, passengers were offered a full refund, plus a future cruise credit for a sailing by April 11, 2023, valued at 50% of their current voyage fare paid.

Norwegian gave passengers on its March 12 cruise a full refund, plus a 100% credit for a future cruise through March 25, 2023.

In a separate statement to FLORIDA TODAY, the cruise line said: “Repairs to Norwegian Escape have taken longer than anticipated. As a result, the cruise scheduled to embark on April 2, 2022, has been canceled. We have contacted all affected guests and apologized for this unforeseen event. We are optimistic that the issue will be resolved, and we plan to resume normal operations on April 9, 2022.”

In a recent communication to it’s passengers, Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) announced the cancellation of Norwegian Epic’s European cruises spanning from December 1, 2023, to April 9, 202The decision comes as part of a fleet redeployment strategy, affecting the itineraries of the NCL Epic.

Is the NCL Epic Still Sailing?

The NCL Epic, unfortunately, is no longer sailing as scheduled. The cruise line recently announced the cancellation of European cruises for the Norwegian Epic. In an email sent to booked passengers, they stated that due to fleet redeployment, all sailings from December 1, 2023, through April 9, 2024, have been canceled.

This news comes as a disappointment to many travelers who were eagerly anticipating their voyage on the NCL Epic. The ship, known for it’s luxurious amenities and exciting itineraries, has gained a loyal following since it’s debut. However, unforeseen circumstances have forced the cruise line to make this difficult decision.

Passengers who’d booked cabins on the affected sailings are being offered various options, including the opportunity to rebook on another NCL ship or receive a full refund. The cruise line is working diligently to accommodate their customers needs and ensure that they’re satisfied with the alternative arrangements.

While the cancellation of these sailings may cause temporary inconvenience, it’s essential to prioritize the safety and well-being of passengers and crew. With the ongoing challenges posed by the global pandemic, cruise lines are continuously adjusting their plans to navigate these uncertain times.

Subscriber only, travel | ncl details new dining on canaveral-bound norwegian aqua.

Sukhothai is the first Thai restaurant for Norwegian Cruise Line debuting on new ship Norwegian Aqua in 2025. (Courtesy/NCL)

With more room than its two sister ships, Norwegian Cruise Line’s newest vessel will feature several new and redesigned dining options when it arrives at Port Canaveral next spring.

Norwegian Aqua is the first of what the line is calling its Prima Plus class, 10% larger than 2021’s Prima and 2023’s Viva. The ship comes in at 1,056 feet long, 156,300 gross tons and a 3,571-passenger capacity based on double occupancy. That’s still smaller than the line’s popular Breakaway Plus class ships Escape, Joy, Bliss and Encore.

Still, the extra room means a shift of some returning venues found on Prima and Viva and the introduction of three new offerings.

At the top of the list is the line’s first dedicated Thai venue called Sukhothai, a specialty restaurant headed to Deck 17 with items such as Thai cashew chicken, salt and pepper prawns and Thai grilled steak salad. There also will be a variety of curries. The venue’s design comes from SMC Design firm out of London aiming to blend traditional and contemporary Thai elements, according to the line.

“(Guests) will be greeted with a warm, inviting atmosphere of bamboo and rice paper pendant lights; a striking geometric patterned floor; and colorful furniture transporting diners to the culturally rich country of Thailand,” according to a press release.

It joins a pair of returning Asian fare venues, the Japanese hibachi Hasuki as well as relatively new offering Nama Sushi and Sashimi, which is found on both Prima and Viva, but will feature an updated look on Aqua. Nama’s design from NCL-favorite designers Studio DADO out of Miami will draw from Manga art.

“Guests can expect a playful dining experience surrounded by bold colors of lime green and black,” the line stated.

Planterie is a second new food offering that will actually be one of 10 cuisines to be offered at returning food hall concept Indulge Food Hall on Deck 8. The menu will be all plant-based bowls and other healthy options, the line’s first dedicated eatery with a full plant-based menu. Example items include the Southwest Bowl with smoked tempeh and the Mediterranean Goddess Bowl with spiced vegetables, tabbouleh and honey-roasted carrots.

Indulge Food Hall will get a design makeover by New York’s Rockwell Group going for deep wood accents and gold and metal furnishings. It’s one of the more popular and free options on board both Prima and Viva with both indoor and outdoor seating, and a reputation for getting cruisers their food fast. They sit down, order food using tablets from among all the available offerings such as Mediterranean tapas, barbecue and dessert.

Swirl Wine Bar is a new venue coming to Norwegian Aqua when it debuts in 2025. (Courtesy/NCL)

Another new venue will be dedicated to wine. The Swirl Wine Bar also designed by Studio DADO will be “tucked away” on Deck 6.

“The hidden enclave will feature a comprehensive wine-by-the-glass menu, and an extensive list of rare and premium vintages,” the line stated. “The venue’s architecture is inspired by the captivating beauty and curvature of the geologically stunning Antelope Canyon in Arizona, with warm color hues complemented by cascading horizontal lines and serene blue touches create a perfectly inviting and enchanting space for guests to unwind.”

The sustainable-themed Metropolitan bar will be getting a new and larger home with new design as well, courtesy of Studio DADO. Moving from mid-ship to the aft on Deck 7, it will now feature a grand piano and small stage for live music with an art-deco design from mid-1900s New York.

The Commodore Room is getting a makeover for Norwegian Aqua when it debuts in 2025. (Courtesy/NCL)

Studio DADO is also reworking the complimentary dining space, the Commodore Room, with a more rustic sea-fairing theme.

“Paying homage to the imaginative narrative of the captain’s room, the venue will transport guests to the past times of maritime sophistication with antique wood furnishings; leather banquettes; floors that mimic the lines of a pier; and incredible stone accents, all with a delicate, modern touch,” the line stated.

Other venues getting makeover for Aqua include the Surfside Cafe buffet and Mediterranean seafood option Palomar as well as the Penrose Bar and Waves Pool Bar. The Whiskey Bar and Belvedere Bar are also migrating to new spaces on the ship.

The increased space also means more seating for Hasuki, The Local Bar & Grill and steakhouse Cagney’s.

The ship will also see the return of free venue Hudson’s with its 270-degree views as well as specialty venues French restaurant Le Bistro, Mexican restaurant Los Lobos and Italian restaurant Onda by Scarpetta.

Norwegian Aqua will begin sailing from Port Canaveral when it debuts in 2025. (Courtesy/NCL)

Aqua will begin seven-night sailing of Caribbean itineraries from Port Canaveral beginning in April 2025 before migrating to New York in August and then back to Florida, but sailing out of Miami from October 2025-April 2026.

Among the ship highlights will be what the line says is the first hybrid coaster at sea, a digital sports complex and the first three-bedroom duplex suites for the cruise line in its exclusive area called The Haven.

Set to become NCL’s 20th ship in its fleet, construction continues at the Fincantieri shipyards in Italy, and it marks the first of four planned ships in the Prima Plus class through 2028.

NCL’s parent company recently announced it was also working to secure funding for what would be the biggest class of ship ever for the line at more than 200,000 gross tons with four ships on order from 2030-2036.

I n no uncertain terms, a cruise port makes all the difference regarding your entire vacation. After all, the location of your departure sets the tone for your trip moving forward, determining which destinations you’ll reach once you’re on the high seas.

While specific destinations like Miami or Canaveral boast unique strengths, something might also be said for the Port of Galveston, Texas. A smaller port overlooking the Gulf of Mexico, Galveston may not be the largest or busiest destination from which to depart. Yet, there are plenty of amicable reasons to look into this idyllic Texan island for your next cruise-going experience.

1. Carnival, Royal Caribbean, and Disney Offer Cruises From Galveston

Looking at it plainly, Galveston has three cruise terminals making up its port. In contrast, far larger alternatives, like the Port of Miami, have eleven terminals. Because of this, Galveston unfortunately cannot house many of the industry’s prestigious cruise lines. However, the port’s terminals support several large-scale cruise corporations, with Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Princess, Norwegian, MSC, and Disney Cruises departing from Galveston regularly.

2. The Nearby Cruise Destinations Are Well Worth It

Admittedly, inevitable drawbacks are attached to cruises from Galveston. Considering how much farther west it is than ports in Florida or along the East Coast, most cruise lines out of Galveston cannot travel to their company’s private islands as many are in the Eastern Caribbean. However, Galveston’s location along the Gulf of Mexico has its distinct perks, including ready access to the Western Caribbean and parts of South and Central America. Though some guests might regret losing a chance at CocoCay, it’s hard to be upset when trekking along the shores of Mexico, Honduras, or Belize.

3. It’s Easier To Navigate Than Larger Ports

There’s no simple answer when it comes to determining the total cost of cruises from Galveston over any other port in the U.S. Like most ports, the final cost of the cruise depends on numerous factors, including the time of year you’re sailing, the location of your cabin, and the cruise line you plan on traveling with. However, the convenience of navigating the port itself makes Galveston a perfect option for anyone new to cruise vacations. Avoiding the large-scale crowds and tedious boarding lines as other major ports, Galveston remains a hassle-free destination for most novice travelers out there.

4. galveston is conveniently located in the central u.s..

Given Galveston’s distinct location in eastern Texas , it’s one of the most readily accessible ports for travelers across the U.S. Located in the heart of America, travelers from the Western U.S. will have just as easy time reaching it as vacationers from the Midwest or East Coast. After all, who wants to sit on a lengthy plane ride to reach their port of call? Also, Galveston lacks the same high value of traffic as Miami or other popular ports, making it relatively hassle-free to reach.

5. The Port Terminal Is Reasonably Close to the Airport

Houston’s William P. Hobby Airport is the closest airport to Galveston. Roughly 41 miles northwest of the port, travelers can easily navigate from the airport to their cruise terminal in under an hour. Galveston is also close to several major cities, making it an option, albeit a farther one, for anyone flying into Austin or Dallas. However, given Houston’s short driving distance to Galveston, William P. Hobby Airport is your best bet for air travel.

6. The Boarding Process Is Quick and Seamless

As mentioned above, Galveston doesn’t have the same volume of passengers flooding through its port as Miami, Canaveral, or Port Everglades. As a result, boarding a ship is comparatively tamer—especially since the port opened up its third and latest terminal in 2022. Having been constructed in the past two decades and carefully refurbished, these terminals are in fantastic shape, making the onboarding process much more efficient for vacationers. The terminals also come equipped with innovative new features, with Terminal 3 offering mobile check-in and state-of-the-art facial recognition devices.

7. There Are Plenty of Hotels Nearby

Another notable feature of Galveston is the number of hotels near the port. (Because let’s face it: what’s more accessible than simply waking up, hopping in your car, and practically walking onto the ship without worrying about losing track of time?) What’s more, many of the hotels in the Galveston area have special offers for anyone traveling onboard a cruise ship. These offers include free or discounted parking rates and a helpful shuttle that ferry passengers back and forth from the hotel to the ship. While several hotels in Galveston have these amenities, some of the best include the Hilton Galveston Island Resort and the San Luis Resort .

8. Parking Is Easy

Don’t let Galveston’s size fool you—the port itself has plenty of options when it comes to parking. As previously suggested, anyone staying at a nearby hotel might want to consider leaving their car parked there and taking a shuttle, taxi, or Uber over to their terminal. Additionally, travelers can reserve a space in the port’s parking lot ahead of their trip. These parking spaces are safe and secure, and port employees will assist with any luggage brought aboard on cruises from Galveston.

9. Galveston Itself Is a Beautiful Place To Visit

The main reason we believe you should depart from Galveston on your next cruise is the opportunity you’ll have to see what it has to offer. Like most major cities, there’s plenty to do and see around town, with every prospective sight catering to travelers’ interests. For those interested in shopping, the Strand Historical District has plenty of independently owned stores that feature everything from odd tchotchkes to essential beach items. Galveston’s famous Moody Gardens is an educational park built around natural wonders such as exotic sea life, immaculate flowers, roaming monkeys, and sloths.

10. You’re Bound To Find Some Great Last-Minute Deals

As previously mentioned, Galveston is a more scaled-down port than Miami or Port Canaveral, but its three terminals still receive cruise ships constantly. Because of this constantly moving schedule, most travelers will find it incredibly easy to find last-minute deals on select cruises from Galveston—often days before the ship is booked to leave. Sure, it may not be practical for those traveling from longer distances to book something last-minute. Yet these last-minute deals are well worth it for anyone within a short distance of Galveston.

11. Galveston Is Steeped in Rich Maritime History

Galveston is a city rich in history, having first been settled by Indigenous Natives of the Akokisa and Karankawa tribes before the Europeans arrived in the 1600s. Over the next several centuries, Galveston became a hub for maritime trade, eventually attracting such notable figures as French buccaneer Jean Lafitte. All that being said, history buffs will delight at the chance to visit Galveston, taking in some of the numerous historical sights around town—like Lafitte’s personal hideaway at Maison Rouge or the Michael B. Menard House, named after one of Galveston’s original American settlers. Even those who don’t care for history will find these areas fascinating.
