The Philippines sets travel show dates

MANILA, 11 February 2022: The Philippine Tour Operators Association has confirmed the 33 rd edition of the Philippine Travel Mart will be hosted from 26 September to 2 October 2022.

The 2021 edition was hosted for three days in late November 2021 at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City. The PHILTOA president Fe Abling-Yu told the Philippines News Agency the annual travel show should surpass last year’s 200 exhibitors.

travel time show philippines

The announcement on this year’s show dates coincided with the country’s reopening of borders on 10 February.

“By September, I’m hoping we will be back to normal. You see, this is a one-stop-shop where we invite all regional offices,” she told reporters on the sidelines of the PHILTOA general meeting in Makati City.

The show is renowned for its holiday bargains presented by tourism offices around the region and supported by hotel and airline discounts.

This year, PHILTOA hopes to bring in national tourism organisations from the Philippines’ top source markets like Malaysia, Japan, and South Korea. The move will encourage two-way tourism flows between Asian nations.

“If we can bring in Korea, Japan, and other countries, that will bring in a bigger audience,” Abling-Yu said.

As of yesterday, 10  February, the Philippines opened the door to international tourists from 157 visa-free countries as long as they are fully vaccinated. The conditions of entry are some of the easiest of all Southeast Asian nations.

They are allowed to stay for up to 30-days and are no longer required to observe facility-based quarantine but must self-monitor for Covid-19 symptoms during the first seven days. However, they are required to report to the hotel which would, in turn, inform the local health authorities should they manifest any Covid-19 symptoms during their stay.

Fully vaccinated foreign visitors eligible for the visa-free stat do not require any booking at an accredited hotel, but they must show evidence of travel insurance covering Covid-19 valued at USD35,000.

For more information, visit https://visitor.tourism.gov.ph/

Domestic tourism continues to be a priority in the country to ensure destinations can recover. The Department of Tourism is developing domestic tourism circuits and has allocated about PHP91 million for product development efforts.

Promotions will present the country’s diversity and the variety of themed holiday options such as dive tourism, food and gastronomy, nature-based travel, wellness, pilgrimage, and culture tourism.

Philippines Travel Guide: The Ultimate 3-week Itinerary

Imagine remote islands with palm trees leaning over pristine white sandy beaches and crystal clear waters. The Philippines is a country consisting of 7641 islands that not only offer tropical beaches but also rice terraces, hiking, surfing, and great diving. An interesting mix of Spanish, American, and Chinese cultures formed Filipinos into the extremely welcoming people they are today. Discover the best of the country in this Philippines Travel Guide.

Philippines Travel Itinerary

Traveling in the Philippines takes time because all islands are divided by the ocean. Experiencing the entire country in 3 weeks is impossible. However, this 3-week route takes you along some of the country’s highlights. This Philippines Travel Guide includes extra time meant as travel time.

Day 1: Manila

Manila, the capital of the Philippines, is where your incredible journey starts. Most people have a love-hate relationship with this city and spend one or two nights here. If you want to explore the city, book a tour visiting the city’s highlights and tasting local food.

Tip: Grab Taxi is a great way to get reliable transportation around the city.

Where to Stay in Manila

Makati is the area where you need to spend the night and find all the trendy restaurants and bars.

Day 2 – 3: Coron

The small fishing village Coron is all about hopping from one stunning island to the other. On the morning of day 2, fly from Manila to Busuanga island, followed by a 30-minute drive to Coron town.

Once you arrive, relax, hike up Mt. Tapyas before sunset, and go island hopping by boat ( book online ) on day 3. You can arrange this in advance or at the harbor.

Must-Try! The Philippines has the most delicious mangos. Don’t miss these!

Where to Stay in Coron

Hotels in Coron are available for every kind of budget, whether you want something more luxurious or something that’s more budget-friendly.

Hotels in Coron 😴

Day 4 – 6: El Nido

A 4-hour ferry from Coron ( find tickets ) takes you to one of the most stunning locations in your Philippines Travel Guide. El Nido is located on the northern tip of Palawan Island, offering pristine white beaches and paradise islands. You can visit these places by joining an El Nido Island Hopping Tour .

Day 7: Puerto Princesa

From El Nido, drive down to Puerto Princesa to spend the night before catching your flight to Cebu.

Find your flight to Cebu

Getting to El Nido is possible by van or public transport. In Puerto Princesa, we highly recommend visiting the Iwahig Open Prison and having dinner at Kalui.

Good to know: Unfortunately, the standard Filipino kitchen isn’t that great. Rice and pork or BBQ chicken are the typical dishes. However, at popular restaurants, it is an entirely different world.

Where to Stay in Cebu

You can stay in Moalboal or Cebu City for your canyoning trip. Moalboal is the most convenient as it is very close to Badian, but keep in mind that this cheaper option can be fully booked due to the lack of accommodations.

Alternatively, stay in Cebu City, which, although quite far away from Badian (around a 3-hour drive), has the option of free pick-up and drop-off (with Island Trek Tours).

Spend the night in Cebu City and fly out to Siargao the next morning. Please note: If you’re planning to fly to Siargao, keep in mind that evening flights are often canceled. The Siargao runway does not have lights yet (April 2019).

Day 17 – 20: Siargao

Welcome to the ‘Most Beautiful Island in Asia’. Siargao has the perfect island vibe with great beaches, surfing, scenic drives, island hopping, incredible food, and a chilled vibe. You could easily spend a week in Siargao.

Day 21: Manila

Spend your last day in Manila. We recommend you be back in Manila at least 10 hours before your international flight back home leaves. Why? Most flights in the afternoon are delayed. We have been to The Philippines twice and had just two flights leaving on time or too early, haha.

Food rec: On your last day, visit Hummus Elijah in Makati!

Additional Philippines Travel Itinerary Options

If you have more or less time available, use one of the following options in your Philippines Travel itinerary.

  • Visit the rice fields in the north of the Philippines (4-week route)
  • Skip Puerto Princesa and fly directly from El Nido to Cebu (more relaxed)
  • Skip Siquijor and spend your time in Cebu and Bohol (more relaxed)

Your Budget for the Philippines

The Philippines is a budget travel country. It is affordable to get around, and there is accommodation for every kind of budget. However, the prices for accommodation are a little higher compared to Indonesia or Thailand . If you’re on a tight budget, take the overnight ferry instead of an airplane and travel by bus. The currency in the country is the Philippine Peso (PHP, ₱).

Costs of Traveling in The Philippines

Travel on a budget in The Philippines, from $180 − $350 USD weekly per person, mid-range $320 − $180 USD, and high-end from $180 − $240 USD. However, costs depend on factors like accommodation, transportation, and activities. We did not include flights. Check flight prices here

  • Hostels: $10 − $15 USD Check available hostels
  • Transport: $5 − $50 USD Book public transport

Wifi and SIM Cards in the Philippines

Wifi is something you cannot relate to in the Philippines. It is unstable, and if they offer it, it’s usually not fast. We always recommend getting a SIM card to use Google Maps or make phone calls in emergencies. It is best to get a GLOBE or SMART SIM card (9GB for 1000 PHP) and top it up once you’re out of data.

Get your Sim Card here

How to get around the Philippines?

Transportation in the Philippines is well-arranged and affordable but time-consuming. Travel overland by taxi, tricycles, jeepneys, buses, and minivans and go from island to island by boat or airplane.

philippines travel guide transport

Flights Flights go as often as buses in the Philippines to cross to another island. Flight delays are common, so it is recommended never to book too tight with connecting flights or activities.

Boats and buses Ferries to cross to a different island are very common. Taking an overnight ferry can reduce costs on your travel budget. Booking boats and long bus rides in advance is common.

Book your tickets online in advance

philippines travel guide airplane

Tricycle To cover short distances, a tricycle is very convenient. The vehicle is kind of a 3-wheeled tuk-tuk. You have to bargain with this kind of transport. Our rule of thumb was 100 PHP for 2 persons, including luggage for a 10-minute drive.

Motorbike In the main tourist areas (not cities), we recommend renting a motorbike and driving around by yourself. The price for tourists is about 400 – 600 PHP (±9 USD) per day, depending on the season.

Best Time to Visit the Philippines

From December to April, during the dry season, is the best time to visit the Philippines. Where March to May are the busiest and most expensive months. It is best to avoid traveling there from July to October when the typhoon season is active.

Always do your research per location. For example, El Nido and Siargao have two completely different seasons at the same time of the year.

Is the Philippines safe to travel?

Through media, the Philippines is commonly illustrated as unsafe and a no-go destination. However, that’s not true. The deep southern tip (Mindanao area) of the Philippines is the only no-go area due to possible terrorism. The rest of the Philippines is safe.

It breaks our hearts to hear that people don’t visit the Philippines because of these stories. Why? The Filipino people are some of the friendliest in Southeast Asia. Although Tagalog is their first language, everyone understands and speaks English, which makes it even easier.

Visa for the Philippines

Most nationalities will receive a 30-day Visa on Arrival when flying to the Philippines. The only requirements are that your passport is valid for at least 6 months and that you must have an outbound ticket that will show you’re leaving the country within those 30 days. A standard visa is extendable up to 60 days.

It is recommended to only pack in a backpack? We are planning a trip to the Philippines , leave this week. My husband is thinking that us two plus our 10 year old son need to pack in 1 backpack so when we rent a motorbike that we can just have that for luggage and make it easy getting around.

Hi Ashley, we typically travel with a big bag each. There are many taxis, tricycles, jeepneys, buses, and minivans that can transport you and your luggage to your accommodation, then hire a motorbike once you’ve dropped your bags off. Have an amazing trip! :)

When to go to the Philippines

With over 7000 islands spread over 300,000sq km, there’s never a bad time to grab a beach towel and head to the Philippines . The country is renowned for its strips of golden sand, and even during the height of the rainy season you’re still likely to find an island where the sun is shining. On top of this is a calendar chock-full of fiestas and events, offering a unique cultural highlight for visitors whichever month they visit.

Whether you’re looking for the best time to hit the beach, dance up a storm at a festival, or simply avoid the worst of the tourist crowds, here’s our guide to the best time to visit the Philippines.

Editor's note: during COVID-19 there are restrictions on travel and opening hours may vary. Check the latest guidance in the Philippines before planning a trip, and always follow local health advice.

High season: November-April

The high season is dry season for most of the country, with December, January and February the coolest, most pleasant months for travel, which brings crowds to popular beach areas like El Nido and Coron , and competition for hotel beds.

Celebrations around Christmas, New Year and, notably, Holy Week, in the build up to Easter, make it a colorful and fascinating time to visit the country, but many resorts triple rates around these popular periods.

Dancers and performers decked in flamboyant outfits and smiling masks take to the streets for Masskara Festival in the Philippines.

Shoulder season: May-October

Shoulder season tends to be short and sweet in the Philippines, often just a month either side of the popular dry season and quieter rainy months. Accommodation savings are available if you time it right and tourist crowds are thinner; however, end-of-term school holidays in April and May bring high levels of domestic tourists during this period.

Exciting events like the month-long Magayon Festival in Legazpi in May, with nightly street markets, pop-up bars and live music, and MassKara Festival, which brings flamboyant outfits and frenzied dancing to Bacolod in late October, add extra incentive for a shoulder season trip.

A surfer rides a wave in Siargao, the Philippines

Low season: June-September

Low season means less crowds and cheaper accommodation prices, but rougher seas and a greater chance of bad weather, with passing typhoons sometimes causing days of torrential rain. This won’t, however, dissuade seasoned boarders, with big wave surf season starting at Siargao ’s Cloud Nine (the country’s most famous break) in August.

For the best chance of beach lounging weather, head to the Eastern Visayas , which are often dry when almost everywhere else is drenched – though this region is susceptible to tropical storms so keep an eye on the forecast.

New Year is a ‘superpeak’ period, and hotel rates can quadruple in resort areas. Away from the eastern seaboard, the weather is usually pretty good – relatively cool and dry, although rain can linger into January. It’s also party season: Ati-Atihan Festival , a week-long mardi gras in Kalibo on Panay , is one of the Philippines’ most famous and riotous festivals and peaks in the third week of January, while Sinulog Festival , the granddaddy of Cebu ’s fiestas, brings dancing and processions on the third Sunday of the month. Key events : Ati-Atihan Festival, Sinulog Festival

It’s peak season for foreign travellers, so book ahead. The Christmas winds continue to howl, thrilling kite-surfers, while surf season continues in San Fernando (La Union) and butanding (whale shark) activity picks up in Donsol . On-land, the Chinese lunar new year in late January or early February is celebrated with gusto even among non-Chinese Filipinos, with dragon dances, street parties and fireworks in Manila . Up in the northern mountains of Luzon (the largest island in the Philippines), a more serene celebration takes place as the Panagbenga Flower Festival sees spectacular flower-covered floats meander through the streets of Baguio . Key events : Chinese New Year,  Panagbenga Flower Festival

Temperatures start to rise significantly in March, making city-sightseeing tough but beach-lounging ideal. Tourist numbers are not as high as January or February but things are still pretty busy.

An underwater shot of a woman snorkelling in crystal clear waters, beneath her is a large whale shark, which swims above a seabed covered in coral.

Everything shuts down during Holy Week, which leads up to Easter, when sinakulo (passion plays) and pasyon (a recitation of the Passion of Christ) are staged throughout the country. This is a fascinating time to be in the country, though resort prices again hit ‘superpeak’ levels, during what is the last month of the typical high season. For a less conventional Easter experience, head to the island of Siquijor , where faith healers and witch doctors gather around a big pot on Holy Saturday, preparing a medicinal concoction some say cures all that ails you. Key events : Easter, Lenten Festival of Herbal Preparation

Though shoulder season means a drop in price for accommodation, scorching heat, beaches packed with vacationing locals (April and May are school holidays in the Philippines) and light winds can make this an uncomfortable time to travel. Consider cooler highland destinations such as the Cordillera of North Luzon. Festivals include the traditional Flores de Mayo which sees girls around the country strewing flowers around images of the Virgin Mary, and the month-long Magayon Festival in Legazpi, Bicol region, with nightly street markets, pop-up bars, music stages, dance performances, chilli-eating contests and more. Key events : Flores de Mayo, Magayon Festival

The onset of the wet season brings welcome respite from the heat. June also marks the start of typhoon season, so check the radar and reroute if there’s a big red blob heading your way. But it’s not all doom and gloom, Baragatan Festival sees residents of Puerto Princesa , Palawan, flood the grounds of the Provincial Capitol Building in a massive display of merrymaking, while Pintados-Kasadyaan in Tacloban celebrates pre-Spanish traditional tattooing practices, albeit using water-based paints for the festival’s body decorations. Tourist crowds and accommodation prices drop around the country. Key events : Baragatan Festival, Pintados-Kasadyaan

Slap bang in the middle of low season with few large-scale festivals to speak of, July is not the most popular month to visit the country. Savvy travellers, however, make their way east to spots like Samar and Leyte , which remain dry when the rest of the country is getting drenched. Around the country, scenery is lush and green and crowds are thin.

Two people walk across the famous Cloud 9 surf boardwalk in Siargao, the Philippines. The silhouette of the two men is cast against an orange sky with the sun setting.

It’s the rainiest month (except for on the eastern seaboard, where it’s the driest), so you’ll get fabulous discounts on accommodation. Durian season begins in Mindanao and surf season launches in Siargao . The third week of August also sees Davao ’s showcase its Muslim, Chinese and tribal influences during the Kadayawan sa Dabaw Festival with parades, performances, and fruit and flower displays. Key events : Kadayawan sa Dabaw Festival

Heavy rain continues, particularly in the north of the country. Visitors who chance it could get lucky with a break in the rain, and be rewarded with low accommodation prices and quiet beaches. The Eastern Visayas are still mostly dry.

Things start to dry out after the heavy rains of August and September, but typhoons are still common. The early part of the month is a good time to travel with lower accommodation costs and fewer crowds, but high-season prices kick in towards the end of the month. Christmas music is already ubiquitous in the malls. On the streets of Bacolod , capital of Negros Occidental , mischievous masked men in feathery outfits stir the masses into a dancing frenzy as part of the MassKara Festival during the weekend closest to 19 October. Key events : MassKara Festival

A series of rolling green rice terraces in Ifugao province, Luzon, the Philippines. The fields are surrounded by mountains beneath a cloudy blue sky.

November marks the return to high season with the arrival of good, dry weather for most of the country. Families laden with food gather at the local cemetery on the first day of the month to spend Todos los Santos (All Saints Day) remembering their departed loved ones. It’s a surprisingly festive occasion. Key events : Todos los Santos

High season is in full swing as the Christmas music reaches a crescendo and the northeast Christmas winds ramp up, launching kite-surfing season in Boracay and surf season in northwest Luzon. In Cotabato on the island of Mindanao , Shariff Kabungsuan Festival celebrates the arrival of Islam in the region and includes river parades of decorated boats from 15 to 19 December. The end of the month is a super peak period, which lasts across Christmas and New Year. Key events : Christmas, New Year, Shariff Kabungsuan Festival

Ultimate Philippines Itinerary for 10 Days, 2 Weeks or 3 Weeks

The Philippines is a huge archipelago of over 7000 islands, so putting together the perfect Philippines itinerary means that you have a lot of different destinations to choose from.

Each island is different too, and while that means that there’s something for every type of traveler, it also means that it’s always a challenging crafting a Philippines itinerary.

You need to factor in logistics, the time you have to explore, and whether you want to see beaches and palm trees, or smoking volcanoes and mountaintops.

We are here to help you sift through the overwhelm and share with you our thoughts and experience from several visits with a combined total of more than 3 months of traveling in the Philippines .

Without further ado, here’s our guide to planning the perfect Philippines itinerary, no matter the length of your trip.

Don’t leave home without: Lonely Planet Philippines (Country Guide)

Ultimate Philippines Itinerary

Table of Contents

Best Time to Visit the Philippines

The Philippines has a very tropical climate, and the year is predominantly split into a wet and a dry season. The climate varies of course, with mountainous regions enjoying a cooler climate, and the beaches having fiercely hot summers.

The dry season is the best time to enjoy your Philippines itinerary. It falls between November and May, and you can expect clear skies, clear waters for snorkeling, and little chance of rain.

The wet season sees huge storms hitting the Philippines, and these will often turn into large and potentially destructive typhoons. The wet season, between June and November, is not a good time to explore the Philippines.

Getting Around in the Philippines

This is a huge country, and with over 7000 islands spread out across a vast stretch of ocean, you’ll need to factor in some logistics when you’re planning your Philippines itinerary.

The islands are spread over, and if you’ve only got two weeks, then you’ll need to fly between the major destinations. You can use Cebu or Manila as hubs, as from these airports you can reach almost any other city and island with either Air Asia, Philippines Airlines or Cebu Pacific.

If you’ve got longer, then you can take ferries and travel overland. Every island is connected by ferries, although these will vary in speed and level of comfort.

On land, you can take buses or minibusses between cities, while within cities you’ll either want to hire a tricycle or if you’re feeling adventurous, jump on a Jeepney. In Manila and Cebu, you’re best using the ride-hailing app Grab to get around quickly and safely.

Costs and Budgets

The Philippines can be an inexpensive country to travel around, especially if you stick to local transport and food, and stay in dorms or budget hotels.

You can get away with spending as little as USD 20 a day, plus the cost of activities such as island hopping or snorkeling.

On the other end of the spectrum, in destinations such as Boracay and even Manila, you can spend much more, and splurge on luxurious hotels and gourmet restaurants.

Read reviews and check prices with our Hotel Search Engine , which gives you the best hotel deals found on the web. Our search engine pulls results from all of the major booking places, including Expedia, Hotels, Booking and more. All the options, all the deals, all in one place and just for you.

Safety Tips in the Philippines

The Philippines has a mixed reputation when it comes to safety because this is a country that often makes it into the news for its admittedly frequent natural disasters and internal conflicts.

Yes, there are insurgencies in the south, and yes, there are active volcanoes and a fierce typhoon season. But plan well, and keep an eye on the weather and you’ll stay out of trouble.

Filipinos are some of the friendliest and most hospitable people in the world, and you’ll soon find out why the country’s tourism slogan is ‘It’ s more fun in the Philippines’.

Ideal 10 Day Philippines Itinerary

While these 10 days could be produced in more than a hundred varieties, I think it is important to note that we are building this route for first-time visitors to the Philippines.

This will include some of the most famous and popular places that you simply cannot miss when you come to the Philippines.

Of course, you’re free to substitute and head off to whatever places beckon to you, but no matter how you swing it, these places are a must.

10 Day Philippines Itinerary Overview:

10 day Philippines itinerary map

  • Day 1: Arrive in Manila – depending on time, do some afternoon sightseeing
  • Day 2: Fly to Coron in the morning – explore the area or book an afternoon tour
  • Day 3: Island Hopping tour around Coron Island
  • Day 4: Island Hopping tour around nearby islands
  • Day 5: Fly to Cebu in the morning
  • Day 6: Cebu – take a day trip to Kawasan Falls
  • Day 7: Fly to Caticlan and take the ferry to Boracay
  • Day 8: Boracay
  • Day 9: Fly to Manila in the morning – spend the day exploring the city and visiting its sites
  • Day 10: Depart the Philippines

With 7,000 islands, the options are literally endless. That said, we’ve been many times and this will give you a good taste of the best.

While at first glance the Philippines look easy and you may think that you can see a lot of areas in 10 days, this is not the case. Logistics are something most people overlook when planning a Philippines itinerary.

There are very few islands that are connected to each other by flights. This means that to change islands, in most cases, you will have to fly back to Manila and then onwards to the new place. This also has to be done as segments and you will not be able to book the flights on one reservation.

This requires a lot of planning and sadly, a lot of time spent in airports, especially if you have luggage. As you have to collect and recheck on each segment.

So the overview we provided above is one of the most seamless ways to see a few of the most famous areas in the Philippines without having to fly back to Manila. You’re welcome!

Manila: 1 to 2 Days

Manila is the sprawling, chaotic and hectic capital of the Philippines, and while most travelers need to pass through here to get elsewhere, few actually hang around for too long.

It’s not all traffic and smog though, and it’s well worth hanging around for at least a day or two to get under the skin of the Philippines’ largest city because this is where you’ll find history and heritage in abundance.

Popular Things to See in Manila

Visit the old Spanish colonial city, Intramuros, where you can see the stone bastions that defended Manila for centuries, and delve deep into the local heritage.

Unravel the historical threads of Philippine culture as you stroll Manila’s 16th-century walled city, Intramuros, with a guide . Hear how Manila evolved through Malay, Spanish, American, and Japanese eras; learn about pre-colonization peoples and the national hero Dr. José Rizal.

The financial hub of Makati is Manila’s trendiest district. It’s a great place to stay, and a great place for fusion food and craft beers when the sun goes down.

Discover historical information you may have missed, on a private half-day tour of Makati , a great introduction for first-time visitors. Check off highlights such as San Agustin Church and Museum, Rizal Park and Shrine, Fort Santiago and Intramuros, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

No other district in Manila can beat Binondo when it comes to food. This is Manila’s Chinatown, and it’s an epic world of food, markets, and culture.

Coron: 3 to 4 Days

Travel to Coron to find one of the most spectacular places in the country. No Philippines itinerary is complete without at least 3 days in Coron, but to see everything, you’ll need to save as much as a week to explore.

Coron is rapidly growing into a top destination, but it still remains beautifully rustic, and in many places, totally uncrowded too. There are towering limestone cliffs, clear freshwater lagoons, and remote, isolated islands .

Popular Things to See in Coron

KAYANGAN LAKE

The most popular tourist attraction in Coron is Kayangan Lake . This beautiful, freshwater lake is steeped in local legend and is refreshingly clear and cool to swim in.

Book this great full-day tour that takes in all the island’s highlights, including snorkeling at the Siete Pecados Marine Park and Coral Eden, a boat cruise around Kayangan Lake, and swimming at the Twin Lagoons, plus a delicious seafood lunch on Calachuchi Beach.

MOUNT TAPYAS

For a view over the islands, then hike up the steps that lead from Coron Town to the summit of Mount Tapyas. It’s the best spot in Coron for sunset.

PASS ISLAND

Head to Pass Island to find one of Coron’s most remote, yet spectacular destinations. Maroon yourself on Pass Island, where you can enjoy white sands and relaxed Island vibes.

Cebu: 2 to 3 Days

Cebu is home to the Philippines’ second city, Cebu City, but away from the metropolis, it’s a verdant, green paradise brimming with waterfalls and beaches.

Popular Things to See in Cebu

If you’ve ever wanted to swim with shoals of hundreds of thousands of sardines, then take a trip to Moal Boal. Jump into the water off the beach and you’ll be immersed in the sardine runs.

KAWASAN FALLS

Head to Kawasan Falls, where you can find the most spectacular waterfall in the Philippines. You can swim in turquoise plunge pools, or jump from towering cliffs into the water far below.

If you are looking for an adrenaline-filled tour, no trip to Cebu is complete without visiting the Kawasan Canyon. Explore the canyon in a safe and secure environment during a full-day excursion from Cebu in a small group .

Jump into pools from heights of up to 30 feet (9 meters) and swim through caves and rivers. Plus, you’ll hike through the forest and enjoy lunch at Kawasan Falls.

Boracay: 2 to 3 Days

The most famous island in the Philippines is Boracay. This is the original tropical paradise, where you can find white sand beaches and fiery sunsets.

But Boracay suffered from over-tourism and was forced to close for 6 months for a massive cleanup. It’s reopened though, and the future looks bright.

Popular Things to See in Boracay

WHITE BEACH

The most iconic place in Boracay is White Beach. This long stretch of sand is glorious, and one of the most famous beaches in the Philippines.

D’MALL

Head to D’Mall, just off the beach, where you can find Boracay’s best bars and restaurants.

ISLAND HOPPING

Boracay has great beaches and is surrounded by great islands and snorkeling spots. The best way to explore is to join an island hopping tour.

Ideal 2 Week Philippines Itinerary

Using the initial 10-day itinerary as our base from above, we are going to build on that for the 2 week Philippines itinerary.

Honestly, it won’t look a whole lot different, with the exception of adding additional destinations. As I’ve already mentioned, the biggest hurdle is logistics in the Philippines.

So you want to plan your itinerary in a way that minimizes your time on airplanes, in airports and instead maximizes your time out adventuring.

With that said, I want to show your two viable options to maximize your 2 week Philippines itinerary below. There is no right answer, it truly depends on your interests.

2 Week Philippines Itinerary Overview – OPTION A:

2 week Philippines itinerary map

  • Day 4: Island Hopping tour or start 5-day sea expedition to El Nido
  • Day 5: Fly to El Nido
  • Day 6: El Nido
  • Day 7: Travel overland to Puerto Princesa
  • Day 8: Puerto Princesa
  • Day 9: Fly to Cebu in the morning
  • Day 10: Cebu – take a day trip to Kawasan Falls
  • Day 11: Fly to Caticlan and take the ferry to Boracay
  • Day 12: Boracay
  • Day 13: Fly to Manila in the morning – spend the day exploring the city and visiting its sites
  • Day 14: Depart the Philippines

2 Week Philippines Itinerary Overview – OPTION B:

2 week Philippines itinerary map

  • Day 4: Island Hopping tour
  • Day 5: Fly to Bohol in the morning
  • Day 6: Bohol/ Panglao
  • Day 7: Bohol/ Panglao
  • Day 8: Ferry to Cebu
  • Day 9: Cebu – take a day trip to Kawasan Falls
  • Day 10: Cebu – island tour

As your Philippines itinerary gets longer, you’ll be required to navigate trickier logistics. With 2 weeks, though, you can still be pretty fluid and avoid going back to Manila between islands on both of the above itineraries.

Taking island hopping day tours and utilizing local ferries in each of these destinations will allow you to explore more of the area, as well.

Palawan 4 to 5 Days

To the south of Coron, you can find Palawan, an island that’s often been called the Last Frontier of the Philippines. While many places here are far from untouched now, few places can match Palawan for raw beauty.

Visit El Nido for parties and island hopping, head to Puerto Princesa for beaches and underground rivers, or travel far south to get really off the beaten track.

Popular Things to See in Palawan

Located on the northern tip of Palawan, El Nido is a must-visit for any Philippines itinerary.

A sleepy little fishing village has grown into the number one backpacking spot in the Philippines, and once you start island hopping, you’ll soon understand why.

Enjoy the beautiful coastline scenery on this full-day sightseeing cruise from El Nido . Relax onboard the boat while traveling around the islands and beaches of Bacuit Bay.

This includes 7 Commando Beach, Shimizu Island, and Secret Lagoon. Stop for swimming and snorkeling using the provided equipment, and refuel midday with a buffet lunch.

PUERTO PRINCESA UNDERGROUND RIVER

Close to Palawan’s largest city, you can find an unusual UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Underground River is a remarkable network of waterways that have carved a route through limestone rocks.

Visit the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park, and paddle down the Puerto Princesa Underground River on this 8-hour tour .

Board a boat at the mouth of the cave at Sabang Wharf, and stop at the Buenavista viewpoint for views of the Ulugan Bay.

Located far south, Balabac is about as off the beaten track as you can go in Palawan. Think raw Island scenery and untouched beaches.

Bohol: 2 to 3 Days

Bohol is the perfect place to visit if you’re putting together your first Philippines itinerary.

You can visit the famed Chocolate Hills, hang out on Alona Beach, and island-hop to beautiful natural spots.

Popular Things to See in Bohol

CHOCOLATE HILLS

One of the most famous places in the Philippines, no one should miss out on these legendary chocolate-colored hilltops.

Enjoy a full-day tour of Bohol Island while traveling with an informative guide around the stunning island. Relax during a lunch cruise on the Loboc River.

Here you’ll have the opportunity to spot indigenous Philippine tarsiers, some of the smallest primates in the world, and then take in the Chocolate Hills from several vantage points.

ALONA BEACH

Found on Panglao Island, Alona Beach is the best place to stay in Bohol. White sands, fiery sunsets, and great snorkeling and diving opportunities.

Ideal 3 Week Philippines Itinerary

Continuing to build off the above itineraries, we have an additional week to play with when we consider a 3 week Philippines itinerary. In my opinion, you still want to avoid routing back through Manila, if at all possible.

However, with a 3-week itinerary, you’re going to find yourself flying back through either Manila or Cebu to access some other places.

Unless, of course, you choose to use your additional week to extend your stays in Coron, El Nido/Palawan, Cebu, Boracay or Bohol. All of which are perfectly acceptable options.

If you want to know the truth, we’d happily spend 3 solid weeks just in Palawan! So each to their own, but there is still plenty to check out in the Philippines, so don’t be shy about island hopping either.

3 Week Philippines Itinerary Overview – OPTION A:

3 week Philippines itinerary map

  • Day 18: Ferry to Caticlan and fly to Manila
  • Day 19: Manila – spend the day exploring the city and visiting its sites
  • Day 20: Manila – day trip to Taal Volcano

A 3-week Philippines itinerary, no doubt, will give you a solid amount of time to see some of the best areas of the Philippines. You’ll get into multiple provinces and regions while having a nice balance of beaches, islands and adventure.

It is possible to venture further afield, and of course, there are still plenty of places in the Philipines that are worth a visit, even though they are not mentioned above.

Puerto Galera: 2 to 3 Days

Located just a short journey to the south of Manila, you can quickly escape the urban jungle with a trip to Puerto Galera.

Take a ferry from Batangas to the island of Mindoro, where you’ll find beautiful beaches, jungle-clad waterfalls, and excellent snorkeling and diving.

Popular Things to See in Puerto Galera

The best beach in Puerto Galera is White Beach, known for its perfect white sands.

Head inland to explore the crashing, towering waterfalls of Puerto Galera.

SNORKELING & DIVING

Puerto Galera is surrounded by world-class reefs, and an unbelievable level of biodiversity is awaiting you beneath the waves.

It is also a fantastic place to get your PADI scuba certification. So if you want to do some diving in the Philippines, or need a refresher course, Puerto Galera is a fantastic place to do this.

Siargao: 3 to 4 Days

Siargao is the most up and coming island in the Philippines. Made famous by Instagrammers showing off the rustic jungles and glorious beaches, this is a place where tourism is only going to increase.

It’s also well known for its surfing opportunities and laid back island vibe. This has made it a popular backpacker hangout, but even is that isn’t your style, you should still add it to your list.

Popular Things to See in Siargao

Siargao is the Philippines’ best-known surf spot, and there are plenty of great breaks to test your skills on.

There’s not just one island here though, there are hundreds, and the best way to explore is on an island-hopping trip.

Philippines Scuba Diving Itinerary

The Philippines is a scuba diving mecca, so I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention this aspect for building a Philippines itinerary. If it is the world-class scuba diving that you seek, then your itinerary is going to look a lot different.

This has a lot to do with the stipulations about flying after diving. So you have to be very thoughtful about how you layout your itinerary.

The best diving in the Philippines is found around Palawan and Cebu. This means you will want to plan your itinerary to maximize time under the water in these regions and utilize the ferry services that run to the various dive areas from the hubs of Coron and Cebu.

Overview of the Best Scuba Diving Locations:

best scuba diving in the Philippines map

  • Puerto Galera

Beginners or people that wish to get their PADI Open Water certification should look to places like Puerto Galera and Coron. Both places are also great options for getting your PADI Advanced Open Water certification.

Experienced divers will want to head to Coron to dive on WWII shipwrecks before heading to Cebu, where they can access world-famous dive sites in Malapascua, Dumaguete and Panglao, to name a few.

As you can see, the places mentioned vary a bit from those listed in the more standard itineraries above. Of course, if you’re scuba diving for fun, you’ll be able to find great diving almost anywhere in the country.

Putting it All Together

As I’ve said multiple times, there are hundreds of possible outcomes for building a Philippines itinerary that works for you. There is no right or wrong way to do it.

Where you go and what you do will have a lot to do with how much time you have and your budget. It is possible to experience the Philippines as a backpacker on a budget, in a high-end luxury way and everything in between.

Philippines' ABS-CBN has partnered with old industry rival GMA to air the popular noontime variety show 'It's Showtime' from April 6.

The CEO of ABS-CBN has lifted the lid on how the media conglom’s first variety show collaboration with former network rival GMA typifies a new era of business for the Filipino company.

ABS-CBS teamed with GMA to air the popular midday variety show It’s Showtime , which will air from April 6 on GMA’s main channel.

“Since the non-renewal of our franchise and our exit from the broadcast business, we have viewed other broadcasters as our partners and not our rivals,” he said. “Our focus now is purely on content creation, and we have decided to rely on our industry partners to handle terrestrial distribution.”

Katigbak also addressed the It’s Showtime collaboration, saying: “GMA today has the largest reach and viewership among all the broadcasters, and that will give Showtime a natural advantage. “On the other hand, prior to the shutdown of ABS-CBN’s broadcast business, Showtime was the leading noontime show in terms of ratings. It’s a powerful collaboration in the sense that we are bringing together the strongest program at noontime and airing it on the network with the largest reach.”

The show was the first non-narrative format from ABS-CBN to be franchised internationally, after Indonesia’s MNCTV created a spin-off titled It’s Showtime Indonesia , which was broadcast from 2019 to 2020.

It’s Showtime is hosted by a large ensemble cast comprising Vice Ganda, Anne Curtis, Vhong Navarro, Jhong Hilario, Kim Chiu, Ogie Alcasid, Karylle, Amy Perez, Teddy Corpuz, Jugs Jugueta, Ryan Bang, Ion Perez, Jackie Gonzaga, MC Muah Calaquian, Lassy, and Cianne Dominguez.

ABS-CBN was recently forced to issue a statement to the Philippine Stock Exchange following a newspaper article claimed it is looking at a return to broadcasting. The statement noted it had sold its broadcasting assets and did not intend to apply for a new franchise.

Earthquake maps show where seismic activity shook the Northeast today

By Lucia Suarez Sang

Updated on: April 5, 2024 / 7:51 PM EDT / CBS News

Residents across the Northeast were rattled by a  4.8 magnitude earthquake that shook  the densely populated New York City metropolitan area and much of the surrounding region on Friday morning. The U.S. Geological Survey was quick to release maps showing the spot where the quake was centered, in New Jersey, and the area where it was felt.

The USGS reported the quake occurred about 7 miles north of Whitehouse Station, New Jersey. It indicated that the quake might have been felt by more than 42 million people. There were several aftershocks later in the day, including one with a magnitude of 4.0.

Map shows area affected by earthquake centered in New Jersey

People in Baltimore , Philadelphia , New Jersey, Connecticut, Boston and other areas of the Northeast reported shaking. Tremors lasting for several seconds were felt over 200 miles away near the Massachusetts-New Hampshire border.

The map below shows the seismic intensity of the earthquake. The map, which is mostly a lighter shade of blue, shows that the intensity was light to weak, depending on the distance from the epicenter.

Another map released by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre on X, formerly Twitter, highlights the eyewitness reports of shaking and possible damage levels during the seismic event.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul and New York City Mayor Eric Adams have been briefed on the quake.

"We're taking this extremely seriously and here's why: There's always the possibility of aftershocks. We have not felt a magnitude of this earthquake since about 2011," Hochul said.

People across the region were startled by the rumbling of the quake. One New York City resident told CBS New York's Elijah Westbrook, "I was laying in my bed, and my whole apartment building started shaking. I started freaking out,"

It's not the first time the East Coast and New York City have been hit by an earthquake.

A 5.0 quake was measured in New York City in 1884.

The shaking stirred memories of the Aug. 23, 2011, earthquake that jolted tens of millions of people from Georgia to Canada. Registering magnitude 5.8, it was the strongest quake to hit the East Coast since World War II. The epicenter was in Virginia.

That earthquake left cracks in the Washington Monument, spurred the evacuation of the White House and Capitol and rattled New Yorkers three weeks before the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terror attacks.

Solar eclipse

America gets ready for the total solar eclipse

By Elise Hammond , Maureen Chowdhury , Antoinette Radford and Matt Meyer , CNN

Our live coverage of the eclipse has moved here .

Get ready for the eclipse across America: Here's what to expect tomorrow

From CNN's Ashley Strickland

This composite image shows the progression of a solar eclipse near Illinois on August 21, 2017.

When the  total solar eclipse  traces a path  across Mexico, the United States and Canada  later today, spectators can anticipate a multitude of awe-inspiring moments.

It’s worth taking some time to stop and take in this historic celestial event because a total solar eclipse won’t be visible across the contiguous US again until August 2044 and an annular eclipse — which happens when the moon can’t completely block the sun— won’t appear across this part of the world again until 2046.

Here's what else you should watch for:

  • Partial eclipse: The moon doesn’t suddenly appear between Earth and the sun — the event begins with a partial eclipse, in which the moon appears to take a “bite” out of the sun. Depending on your location, the partial eclipse can last between 70 and 80 minutes, according to  NASA . For those living outside of the path of totality, a crescent-shaped partial eclipse, rather than a total eclipse, will be the main event.
  • Changes in the sky near totality: Within the path, the partial eclipse is the longest phase, but as the time for totality nears, look for changes in the sky’s appearance. "About 15 to 20 minutes before totality, the sky starts getting this really weird gloomy color," said Dr. John Mulchaey, Carnegie Institution for Science’s deputy for science and the director and Crawford H. Greenewalt Chair of the Carnegie Observatories. “It’s almost like a gray because the sun’s way high in the sky, but it’s almost entirely blocked out." The eerily darkening sky is a cue for skywatchers that the stellar show is about to begin. Just make sure you have eclipse glasses handy to safely view the sun before the event gets underway.
  • Glowing rays around moon: Two breathtaking phases occur within the final moments before totality, Mulchaey said. When the moon begins to cross in front of the sun, the star’s rays will shine around valleys on the moon’s horizon, creating glowing drops of light around the moon called Baily’s beads. And as totality nears, Baily’s beads will quickly disappear and make way for the “diamond ring,” a nickname for how it looks when a single point of light remains — like a glistening giant diamond ring. Both of these phases last less than a minute, Mulchaey said.

Here's where tomorrow's eclipse will be most visible across the US:

Don't miss tomorrow's total eclipse: It'll be 2 decades before the contiguous United States gets another

People watch as the solar eclipse approaches totality from Clingmans Dome, the highest point in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, on August 21, 2017.

If you miss Monday's eclipse, you'll be waiting for a while for your next chance to see one on US soil. The next  total solar eclipse  won’t be visible across the contiguous United States again until August 2044.

Parts of Europe, including areas of Greenland, Iceland, Spain, Russia, and a small area of Portugal, will see the world's next total solar eclipse on August 12, 2026, according to NASA.

And there will be annular solar eclipses — which are like total solar eclipses, except the moon is at the farthest point in its orbit from Earth, so it can’t completely block the sun — even sooner.

An annular solar eclipse will be visible in South America later this year on October 2. There will be another one in February 2026 for parts of Antarctica.

NASA wants you to help collect data during the solar eclipse

From CNN's Taylor Nicioli

Stephanie Wilson records observations during the partial solar eclipse in Boston, on August 21, 2017.

NASA’s Eclipse Soundscapes Project will collect observations from the public on animal behaviors as well as human reactions to the eclipse through written multisensory reports — such as what the observer saw, heard or felt — and audio recordings of the environment during the solar event.

Total solar eclipses are infrequent events that provide scientists with rare opportunities to collect data on behavioral responses to the phenomenon, said Kelsey Perrett, communications coordinator for the Eclipse Soundscapes Project.

Nearly, 2,500 people have already signed up for the NASA project, she added. “When it comes to data, it’s the more the merrier. The more people who participate, the better we can answer our questions about how solar eclipses impact life on Earth.”

Who can participate: The NASA project is open to all volunteer participants, including those who are blind or have low vision, according to the  news release.  What’s more, it’s not necessary to have an animal within eyesight to take good observations, as listening is also an important sense to use during the eclipse, said Dr. Bryan Pijanowski, professor of forestry and natural resources and the director for the  Center for Global Soundscapes  at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana

Severe storm threat increasing for parts of Texas in the path of the solar eclipse totality, forecasters say

From CNN Meteorologists Caitlin Kaiser & Elisa Raffa

There is now a Level 3 of 5 risk for severe weather on Monday just outside of Dallas, Texas, where thousands of people will be gathered for the solar eclipse.

The severe weather is expected to move into the region after the eclipse reaches totality in the area, but could be hazardous to those traveling through.

"There may only be a short window (1-2 hrs) between the eclipse and strong to severe storms," according to the National Weather Service in Dallas.

The main threat associated with this system is large to very large hail, with the possibility of damaging winds and isolated tornadoes, the Storm Prediction Center said.

See CNN's full breakdown of eclipse weather news for the latest.

Track the path: Here's a look at where tomorrow's eclipse will be most visible across the US

NASA advises that there is always some uncertainty involved in mapping the eclipse's path.

New map calculations have raised some concerns that the path of totality — where it’s possible to see the moon completely block out the sun — is slightly narrower than NASA calculated. That means some cities on the edge of the route that were expecting to experience a second or two of total darkness might be left out.

But NASA spokesperson Karen Fox notes the difference would only affect cities on the very edge of the path, where predictions are difficult regardless. That's why the space agency and other experts always recommend spectators head for the middle of the path.

Bill Nye shares his advice for the total eclipse tomorrow: "Be in the moment"

From CNN's Jackie Wattles

Everyone's favorite science educator Bill Nye sat down to chat with CNN about tomorrow's total eclipse, sharing some words of encouragement for people who may be watching in cloudy conditions , and challenging people — especially young eclipse viewers — to "be in the moment" on Monday.

Watch the interview below:

A certain kind of cloud will disappear during the eclipse

From CNN's Ayurella Horn-Muller

People watch the solar eclipse in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, on August 21, 2017.

It’s midday, and the sun is high in the sky, a natural cyan canvas peppered with puffy, cauliflower-shaped clouds. With little warning, the clouds cluttering the horizon start to vanish before your eyes. Not long after, the world begins to darken, as the sun disappears from view.

For the entirety of the eclipse, the clouds will stay away .

That’s at least what scientists expect to take place in swaths of Mexico, Canada and the United States during  April 8’s total solar eclipse . If weather permits, those living in the 49 US states where a  partial eclipse  is expected could also spot some clouds vanishing.

Here's why that is: During an eclipse, shallow cumulus clouds start dissipating in large proportions when only a fraction of the sun is covered, and they don’t reform until the end of the event, according to a  study  published February 12 in the journal Nature Communications Earth & Environment. The research team found that cumulus clouds dissipate during eclipses because of the relationship between solar radiation and the formation processes of the clouds.

During an eclipse, the surface cools rapidly from the moon’s shadow blocking the sunlight, preventing warm air from rising from Earth’s surface — a core ingredient in the formation of cumulus clouds, according to Victor Trees, a doctoral candidate in the Netherlands who led the study. That rising air process leading to the  production of clouds  usually takes roughly 15 to 20 minutes, according to simulations.

But this doesn’t mean your vantage point of the forthcoming  eclipse  is guaranteed to be cloud-free as the research doesn’t apply to all clouds — only the shallow cumulus kind found hovering over land.

What to do if you don't have certified solar viewers and eclipse glasses

Students from Lexington Junior High School look at the shadow of the solar eclipse in Cypress, California, on August 21, 2017.

If you don’t have certified glasses or viewers on hand for tomorrow's big eclipse, you can still view it indirectly by using a  pinhole projector , such as a hole punched through an index card.

These work when you stand with your back to the sun and hold up the card. The pinhole projects an image of the crescent or ring-shaped sun on the ground or other surfaces.

Just remember: Never face the sun and look directly at it through the pinhole.

Other pinhole projectors you may already have on hand, include colanders, straw hats or anything with small holes in it. Or you can simply hold up your hands, space out your fingers and cross them over each other to create a waffle pattern. The small space between will reflect the sun’s crescent during a partial eclipse or a ring during the annular eclipse.

Standing by a leafy tree? The small spaces between leaves will dapple patterns of the eclipse phase on the ground.

Madlang Kapuso vs Kapatid: Philippine network war heats up as ‘It’s Showtime’ airs on GMA-7

It's Showtime/TV5/ Marc Logan social media pages

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippines’ network war heats up on Saturday, April 6, as the ABS-CBN noon show It’s Showtime airs for the first time ever on its former fierce competitor GMA Network’s (GMA) flagship free TV Channel 7.

The show competes with the country’s longest running noon show, Eat Bulaga! , led by showbiz veterans Tito Sotto, Vic Sotto, and Joey de Leon, which used to air on GMA’s Channel 7, but is now on tycoon Manny V. Pangilinan’s network, TV5.  Eat Bulaga! will hold a “National Barangay Day” for its Saturday episode, where several local communities get to participate on the show live.

On Friday night, April 5, Kapamilya star Anne Curtis, one of the Philippines’ leading social media influencers with 21 million followers on Instagram, made a guest appearance on GMA’s flagship prime time news show 24 Oras to promote the noon show.

“Never in my wildest dream na mangyayari ang pagkakataon na ito, at eto na nga, bukas na po, mangyayari na. Ang imposible magiging posible na po sa GMA-7. Isang malaking pasabog at engrandeng pagwelcome sa amin dito sa GMA ,” Curtis said on the show’s entertainment segment, Chika Minute .

(Never in my wildest dream that this would happen, and here it is, it’ll happen tomorrow. The impossible will become possible here on GMA-7. It’ll be a big show with a grand welcome here on GMA.)

The Saturday episode of It’s Showtime is also the belated 48th birthday celebration on the show of its lead host, comedian Vice Ganda, and Curtis promised the show would bring lots of laughter and happiness to its viewers.

“Please join us tomorrow [Saturday] as we bring you laughter, fun. Magtatawanan po tayo bukas. Magsasayawan, kantahan, tawanan, lahat ibibigay po namin sa inyo mga Madlang Kapuso… .At birthday din ni Vice bukas. Kaya abangan nyo rin po ang birthday ng meme ng bayan, Vice Ganda ,” Curtis said.

(We will be laughing together, dancing, singing, we’ll give it all to you Madlang Kapuso…And it’s also the birthday celebration of Vice Ganda tomorrow. So watch out also for the birthday of the country’s meme star Vice Ganda.)

Curtis said she and other It’s Showtime hosts will also join the popular game show Family Feud on GMA on April 8, Monday. She said she also hopes she’d get a chance to participate in the reality game show, Running Man Philippines , which will be on its second episode on GMA in May this year.

Curtis said she wished she would also be able to work with her sister, Kapuso star Jasmine Curtis-Smith, her wedding ninong (godfather) and ex-Kapamilya host Kim Atienza, as well as Kapuso leading men Alden Richards, Dingdong Dantes, and Dennis Trillo.

Nice seeing you ninong! Thanks for having me 🌈 https://t.co/LPR1MQ5TsQ — Anne Curtis-Smith (@annecurtissmith) April 5, 2024

“Parehong determinasyon at magandang  intensyon ng Kapuso at Kapamilya, nagsama at nakabuo sila ng magandang desisyon na gawin ito…for the audience,” Vice told GMA News.

(The determination and good intention of Kapuso and Kapamilya combined for this good decision…for the audience.)

WHAT’S UP, MADLANG KAPUSO! 💖 Iniimbitahan kayo ni Vice Ganda na abangan ang #ItsShowtime sa GMA! #ShowtimeSaGMA , MAMAYA NA! pic.twitter.com/Un5rchuONa — GMA Network (@gmanetwork) April 6, 2024

In another GMA News report, it was revealed that Kapuso stars Jillian Ward, Gabbi Garcia, Sanya Lopez, Mikee Quintos, Glaiza de Castro, Mark Bautista, and Christian Bautista will be guests on It’s Showtime’s Saturday episode.

Filipino-Argentinian K-pop star Maria Chantal “Chanty” Videla of Lapillus will also make a guest appearance. Chanty is on indefinite hiatus from Lapillus’ group activities due to chronic fatigue syndrome but her agency, MLD Entertainment, said earlier this week that she would continue individual activities.

The Saturday show is the first under a co-production agreement between GMA and ABS-CBN on the airing of It’s Showtime on Channel 7. Both sides signed last year a blocktime agreement on airing It’s Showtime on GMA’s second major channel, Good TV or GTV , after TV5 took in Eat Bulaga! for its noon show starting July 1, 2023. Channel 7 is the Philippines’ leading free TV channel.

It’s Showtime also airs on the Zoe Network’s A2Z channel and on ABS-CBN’s Kapamilya Channel on pay cable television.

‘Madlang Kapuso’: Two heads are better than one

‘Madlang Kapuso’: Two heads are better than one

The co-production was made possible after Television and Production Exponents Incorporated (TAPE) and GMA agreed to end the former’s blocktime agreement on the airing of Tahanang Pinakamasaya on the noon time block of Channel 7.

TAPE, which had a blocktime deal with GMA until end of 2024, could not sustain its noon show after failing to get enough advertisers.

ABS-CBN and GMA were strongest rivals in the Philippines’ broadcast industry until the Duterte administration ordered the Lopez-led media conglomerate to shut down its free radio and TV business in May 2020 after its franchise expired .

The House of Representatives dominated by allies of then-president Rodrigo Duterte then rejected its application for a new franchise.

ABS-CBN has since pivoted into a content provider to its former competitors and to streaming platforms . It is now the Philippines’ leading content provider.

TV5 beefs up programming

Meantime, ex-Kapamilya funny news man Marc Logan made a guest appearance on the Kapatid network’s flagship prime time news show, Frontline Pilipinas , on Friday night to promote his weekly magazine show, Mga Kuwentong Marc Logan , which premieres on Saturday at 6:15 pm on TV5. He said he will be appearing three times a week on Frontline Pilipinas for teasers of his weekend show.

‘Pag nakita mo ’to, sign na para abangan si Pambansang Pantanggal Umay, Marc Logan! Mga kwentong kagigiliwan at kaaaliwan, just for you! Abangan ang #Top5MgaKwentongMarcLoganTV5 , simula ngayong APRIL 6, 6:15PM sa #WeekendTripTV5 ! pic.twitter.com/W9Uhd9YtKp — TV5 (@TV5manila) April 4, 2024

Logan also appeared on Eat Bulaga! in March where he joined comedian Vic Sotto and participated in the game show segment Peraphy .

Logan signed with the Kapatid channel more than a year after retiring from ABS-CBN.

Aside from Logan’s show, TV5 also beefed up its weekend programming by adding incumbent Senator Raffy Tulfo’s magazine show, Kapatid Mo, Idol Raffy Tulfo , starting April 7, at 6:15 pm.

Tulfo is a popular Filipino legislator who promises quick “justice” and action to consumer and other public complaints.

TV5 also introduced former CNN Philippines anchor Ruth Cabal as its news anchor for a daily afternoon newscast, Frontline Express , starting April 8.

According to official Nielsen annual ratings seen by Rappler , while GMA Channel 7’s audience share stayed almost the same in 2022 and 2023, TV5’s share has gone up by a couple of percentage points, although GMA-7 still has a wide margin of roughly 30-percentage points over TV5 overall. – Rappler.com

On 31st May , TVJ and the OG Dabarkads did a historic exit at TAPE, Inc. – causing a shuffle and change on Philippine noontime shows in just a month.

A new era on Philippine television started on 1st July 2023 and our noontime landscape has gotten more exciting since. If you’re curious about what and where to tune in, here’s a guide on Philippine noontime shows .

Since Tito Sotto, Vic Sotto, Joey de Leon and the rest of the OG Dabarkads’ departure from TAPE Inc., Eat Bulaga has introduced a fresh set of hosts on 5th June 2023 .

The longest-running noontime variety show in the Philippines has former Manila City Mayor Isko Moreno and Kapuso stars Paolo Contis, Buboy Villar, and the Legaspi twins, Mavy and Cassy, as some of its frontrunners .

Eat Bulaga

Isko Moreno said in his interview with Boy Abunda that the revamped Eat Bulaga’s focus is not on the hosts but on the people.

It reflects in their new segments, such as G sa GEDLI , where they go around Metro Manila and find people who will share their stories while the hosts will be giving out cash to help them.

After Tito, Vic, and Joey’s official departure, It’s Showtime found themselves seeking a new home. It led to one of the biggest TV plot twists of the year: Showtime inked a partnership with GTV , GMA Network’s free-to-air subsidiary channel.

As a homegrown ABS-CBN noontime variety show, it got the madlang pipol shookt, confused, and excited. On the other hand, GMA’s Chairman and CEO, Felipe Gozon, declared during the contract signing that the “ TV war is finally over .”

Tito, Vic, and Joey AKA TVJ spearheaded the longest-running noontime variety show, Eat Bulaga, for almost 44 years. Even though it’s unfortunate that they had to go their separate ways from the producers of the show, loyal fans backed them up.

This big move disrupted the country’s noontime habit, but the legends found resolve in co-producing their show with TV5. They brought along the Legit Dabarkads , including Maine Mendoza and the comedy trio, JoWaPao.

Dabarkads

On 1st July 2023 , TVJ and the Legit Dabarkads unveiled their new name – E.A.T. Vic Sotto announced that they are waiting for their original name (Eat Bulaga) to come home but for now, it will be E.A.T.

It was a heartfelt opening, with TVJ shedding tears and the hosts singing Eat Bulaga’s theme song. They introduced a new segment called, Da Bar: Dabarkads Eatery , with every host auditioning with a singing and comedic performance.

On 3rd July, they introduced more entertaining segments, such as Vortas 5 and Babala! ‘Wag Kayong Ganun… .

Total solar eclipse April 8, 2024 facts: Path, time and the best places to view

In the U.S., 31 million people already live inside the path of totality.

Scroll down to see the list of U.S. cities where the April 8 total solar eclipse will be visible, the duration of the eclipse in those locations and what time totality will begin, according to GreatAmericanEclipse.com .

"Eclipse Across America," will air live Monday, April 8, beginning at 2 p.m. ET on ABC, ABC News Live, National Geographic Channel, Nat Geo WILD, Disney+ and Hulu as well as network social media platforms.

On April 8, 2024, a historic total solar eclipse will cast a shadow over parts of the United States, prompting a mass travel event to the path of totality -- from Texas to Maine and several states and cities in between.

A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the sun and the Earth and, for a short time, completely blocks the face of the sun, according to NASA .

PHOTO: Tyler Hanson, of Fort Rucker, Ala., watches the sun moments before the total eclipse, Aug. 21, 2017, in Nashville, Tenn.

The track of the moon's shadow across Earth's surface is called the path of totality, and to witness the April 8 total solar eclipse, viewers must be within the 115-mile-wide path. To discover when to see the solar eclipse in totality or the partial eclipse in locations across the U.S. outside of the path, check out NASA's Eclipse Explorer tool .

Eclipse travel

In the U.S., 31 million people already live inside the path of totality, bringing the celestial phenomenon to their doorsteps, Michael Zeiler, expert solar eclipse cartographer at GreatAmericanEclipse.com told ABC News.

But for individuals outside of the path, investing time and money are needed to experience the event in totality.

Eclipse chasers, or umbraphiles, are individuals who will do almost anything, and travel almost anywhere, to see totality, according to the American Astronomical Society .

"There's a very active community of solar eclipse chasers and we will go to any reasonable lengths to see solar eclipses anywhere in the world," Zeiler said. "All of us are united in pursuing the unimaginable beauty of a total solar eclipse."

Bringing together both eclipse experts and novice sky watchers, the total solar eclipse on April 8 is projected to be the U.S.'s largest mass travel event in 2024, according to Zeiler, who likened it to "50 simultaneous Super Bowls across the nation."

"When you look at the number of people expected to come to the path of totality for the solar eclipse, we estimate those numbers are roughly the equivalent of 50 simultaneous Super Bowls across the nation, from Texas to Maine," he said.

Eclipse map, path of totality

In the U.S., the path of totality begins in Texas and will travel through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Small parts of Tennessee and Michigan will also experience the total solar eclipse, according to NASA.

Your last-minute guide to Monday's total solar eclipse

Photo Illustration: The phases of a total solar eclipse

A total solar eclipse will cross North America on Monday , offering millions a rare opportunity to see afternoon skies temporarily darken as the moon blocks the face of the sun.

Tune into NBC News NOW as Lester Holt hosts a two-hour special at 2 p.m. ET Monday from Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The eclipse's path fortuitously cuts across Mexico, 15 U.S. states and a small part of eastern Canada. In all other states in the continental U.S., viewers will be treated to a partial solar eclipse, with the moon appearing to take a bite out of the sun and obscuring part of its light.

Here’s everything you need to know about the rare celestial event.

What is a solar eclipse?

Solar eclipses occur when the sun, moon and Earth align. The moon passes between Earth and sun, temporarily blocking the sun’s light and casting a shadow on Earth.

A total solar eclipse is when the moon fully obscures the sun, whereas a partial solar eclipse means it blocks just a portion of the sun’s face.

Solar eclipses occur only with the new moon. Because the moon’s orbit around Earth is tilted, the three bodies don’t always line up in a way that creates an eclipse.

“Imagine if the moon’s orbit were in the plane of Earth’s orbit around the sun — if that were the case, then every new moon, you’d have a total solar eclipse and every full moon, you’d have a lunar eclipse,” Neil DeGrasse Tyson, director of the Hayden Planetarium at the American Museum of Natural History, told NBC News. “So, because things don’t always align, it lends to the rarity of the event and the specialness of the event.”

Where and when will the eclipse be visible?

This year’s eclipse will follow a slightly wider path over more populated areas of the continental U.S. than other total solar eclipses have in the recent past.

NASA estimates that 31.6 million people live within what’s known as the path of totality, where the total solar eclipse will be visible. An additional 150 million people live within 200 miles of the path, according to the agency.

The path travels through Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Tiny parts of Michigan and Tennessee will also be able to witness totality if conditions are clear.

After the eclipse crosses into Canada, it will pass over southern Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Cape Breton, at the eastern end of Nova Scotia.

Those outside the path of totality can still take part in the astronomical event by viewing a partial solar eclipse — visible throughout all 48 states of the contiguous U.S. — or a NASA livestream.

The timing, including how long totality lasts, depends on the location, but some spots will see the moon fully cover the sun for up to 4 minutes and 28 seconds.

Below is a list of timings for some cities along the path of totality, as  provided by NASA . A number of other resources, including NationalEclipse.com  and  TimeandDate.com , can also help people plan.

  • Dallas: Partial eclipse begins at 12:23 p.m. CT and totality at 1:40 p.m.
  • Little Rock, Arkansas: Partial eclipse begins at 12:33 p.m. CT and totality at 1:51 p.m.
  • Cleveland: Partial eclipse begins at 1:59 p.m. ET and totality at 3:13 p.m.
  • Buffalo, New York: Partial eclipse begins at 2:04 p.m. ET and totality at 3:18 p.m.
  • Lancaster, New Hampshire: Partial eclipse begins at 2:16 p.m. ET and totality at 3:27 p.m.

How to safely view a solar eclipse

It is never safe to gaze directly at the sun, even when it is partly or mostly covered by the moon. Special eclipse glasses or  pinhole projectors  are required to safely view solar eclipses and prevent eye damage. Failing to take the proper precautions can result in severe eye injury,  according to NASA .

Eclipse glasses are thousands of times darker than normal sunglasses and specially made to enable wearers to look at the sun during these kinds of celestial events.

Sky-watchers should also never view any part of the sun through binoculars, telescopes or camera lenses unless they have specific solar filters attached. Eclipse glasses should not be used with these devices, as they will not provide adequate protection.

However, during the few minutes of totality, when the moon is fully blocking the sun, it is safe to look with the naked eye.

Image: Tyler Hanson

Beware of fake eclipse glasses. On legitimate pairs, the lenses should have a silver appearance on the front and be black on the inside. The manufacturer’s name and address should be clearly labeled, and they should not be torn or punctured. Check, as well, for the ISO logo and the code “IS 12312-2” printed on the inside.

If you don’t have eclipse glasses, you can make a homemade pinhole projector, which lets sunlight in through a small hole, focuses it and projects it onto a piece of paper, wall or other surface to create an image of the sun that is safe to look at.

All you need is two pieces of white cardboard or plain white paper, aluminum foil and a pin or thumbtack. Cut a 1- to 2-inch square or rectangle out of the center of a piece of white paper or cardboard. Tape aluminum foil over that cut-out shape, then use a pin or thumbtack to poke a tiny hole in the foil.

During the eclipse, place a second piece of white paper or cardboard on the ground as a screen and hold the projector with the foil facing up and your back to the sun. Adjusting how far you hold the projector from the second piece of paper will alter the size of the image on the makeshift screen.

What to look for while viewing the total solar eclipse

For people along the path of totality, there are some fun milestones to keep track of as the total solar eclipse unfolds.

As the eclipse progresses and the sun gets thinner in the sky, it will start to get eerily dark, according to Tyson.

The "diamond ring effect" is shown following totality of the solar eclipse at Palm Cove in Australia's Tropical North Queensland in 2012.

When the last beams of sunlight are about to become obscured, look out for the “diamond ring effect”: The sun’s atmosphere will appear as an illuminated halo, and the last light still visible will look like the diamond of a giant ring.

As the sunlight decreases even further, an effect known as Baily’s beads will be created by the moon’s rugged terrain. Tiny “beads” of light will be visible for only a few seconds around the dark moon, as the last bits of sunlight peer through the moon’s mountains and valleys.

When the moon is fully blocking the sun, it is safe to remove eclipse glasses and look at the total solar eclipse with the naked eye.

The Bailey's Beads effect is seen as the moon makes its final move over the sun during the total solar eclipse on Monday, August 21, 2017 above Madras, Oregon.

Some lucky sky-watchers may even catch a glimpse of a comet .

Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks — nicknamed the “ devil comet ” because an eruption last year left it with two distinct trails of gas and ice in the shape of devil horns — is currently visible from the Northern Hemisphere as it swings through the inner solar system.

The comet can be seen in the early evenings by gazing toward the west-northwest horizon. During the eclipse, when skies darken during totality, it may be possible to see the comet near Jupiter, but its visibility will depend on whether it’s in the middle of an outburst and thus brighter than normal.

Most likely, all eyes will be on the alignment of the moon and sun.

“Most people won’t even notice,” Tyson said. “But if you know to look, it’s there.”

When is the next solar eclipse?

The next total solar eclipse will be in 2026, but it will mostly pass over the Arctic Ocean, with some visibility in Greenland, Iceland, Portugal and northern Spain. In 2027, a total solar eclipse will be visible in Spain and a swath of northern Africa.

The next total solar eclipse visible from North America will be in 2033, but only over Alaska. Then in 2044, a total solar eclipse will cross Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, parts of Canada and Greenland.

The next total solar eclipse to cross the continental U.S. coast-to-coast in will occur in 2045. The path of totality for that eclipse will cut through California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia and Florida.
