What to expect flying business class with Lufthansa

How to book lufthansa business class, economy vs. business class on lufthansa, 4 ways to get good value on lufthansa flights, final thoughts on lufthansa business class.

Looking to fly business class with Lufthansa? Maybe you’ve read a Lufthansa business class review or two and it’s inspired you to dive in. Whatever your reason, there are a few things you should expect when considering these types of flights. Here's a look at the amenities you’ll receive, how to book a flight and ways to get a good value on Lufthansa.

Baggage allowance: Those who have booked business class flights with Lufthansa are allowed two pieces of checked luggage up to 70 pounds (32 kilograms). They’re also able to bring two carry-on bags weighing 17 pounds (8 kilograms) each.

Boarding: Business class passengers receive priority boarding and will board with Priority Group 2.

Check-in: As a business class customer, you’ll be able to take advantage of priority check-in at the airport.

Seats: Seats will vary depending on your flight. Lufthansa business reviews show that most long-haul flights feature lie-flat seats in a 2x2x2 configuration, though the airline is introducing a new business class seat with a 1x2x1 configuration granting everyone direct aisle access. Short-haul flights feature a modified economy class seat.

Baggage delivery: Business class passengers can expect to get their bags first with priority delivery.

Food: Regardless of whether you’re flying short- or long-haul, you’ll receive a full meal in business class.

Changes and cancellations: Your options for changes and cancellations will differ on your fare types. Basic business class tickets can make changes but not receive refunds. Basic Plus tickets can make refunds for a fee, and Flex tickets can make all changes and cancellations for free.

Lounge access : Business class passengers have access to Lufthansa lounges on departure and for select flights on arrival.

From here, you can choose your flight. Then, you’ll be taken through the checkout process, including the type of business class fare you’d like to purchase.

You’ll also go through the seat selection page, where you can pick where you’d like to sit.

Finally, be sure to have all your personal information on hand, as you’ll need it to book your flight. After inputting your information and selecting your seat, you’ll be prompted to pay.

No good Lufthansa Airlines business class review will fail to compare the differences between economy class and business class, especially since the price difference can be significant.

While business class on short- and medium-haul flights can be more similar to economy class (thanks to its modified economy class seats), there are still major differences, no matter where you’re flying.

These include:

Earlier boarding.

More flexible tickets.

Increased baggage allowance.

Lounge access.

Priority checked luggage.

Better seats.

Flying can be expensive, especially if you’re traveling internationally. Whether you’re seated in business class or sticking with economy, here are some ways to get good value when flying with Lufthansa.

1) Book Miles & More Bargains

Plenty of airlines release discounted award flights, though Lufthansa is one of the few to do so on a monthly basis. Its Miles & More Bargains promotions rotate each month and offer up to half off award flights around the world. This is valid for all fare classes, including economy, premium economy and business class.

There are nearly always promotions running to or from the U.S., which means it’s relatively easy to snag a business class award ticket for half off by using Lufthansa miles.

Miles & More bargains apply to flights operated by multiple carriers, not just Lufthansa. It’s possible to find these discounted routes from Austrian, LOT, Swiss and Lufthansa.

» Learn more: The best airline credit cards right now

2) Redeem miles with a partner

Lufthansa is one of those airlines that tacks on some big surcharges for flights. This means that if you’re looking to book an award seat, you’ll want to do so with a program that doesn’t pass on surcharges. United Airlines is one as is Avianca Lifemiles .

3) Try the new business class on the Boeing 787 or Airbus A350

Interested in the new business class product? You can be the face of Lufthansa business class reviews if you’re one of the first to try this seat.

Lufthansa’s newest business class is so fresh that it’s operating on a few flights only. However, if you can find them, they’re worth taking. Not only is the seating configuration better — allowing those with a window to access the aisle without clambering over a neighbor — its seats are also larger.

You can find the new product on the Airbus A350 or the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, so when choosing your flight, check the plane type to if you want to try the new business class.

4) Earn Star Alliance elite status

We mention this fairly often, but it’s only because earning airline elite status can be such a good deal for frequent travelers. As a member of Star Alliance , Lufthansa grants those with Star Alliance Gold status perks such as lounge access, early boarding, extra checked luggage, priority luggage delivery and faster security. This is true whether you’re flying in business or economy class.

» Learn more: Best uses of Lufthansa miles

Lufthansa’s business class can be a high-end experience, especially if you find yourself on one of its new planes. That being said, paying cash for a business class ticket is often exorbitant. If you’re looking to take advantage of that extra luggage, lounge access and front-row seats, consider booking your Lufthansa business class flight using award miles instead.

The Complete Guide to Lufthansa Business Class

Going

July 29, 2023

Lufthansa has a history of being well known for their premium cabins, starting with their vaunted Senator First Class from the airline’s earliest days. The current Lufthansa business class product has been due for an overhaul for some time, and one has been announced, but COVID-19 has delayed the rollout of that product for a few years.

As Germany’s national carrier, Lufthansa makes their current premium cabins showcases for the best of German food and wine, with a nod toward global tastes. Whether in lounges or onboard, German beer and wine, German baked goods (including pretzels) and comfort food favorites like potato salads and charcuterie figure prominently in onboard dining.

What to know about Lufthansa business class

Lufthansa offers a business class product on most flights. As with many European carriers, the differences between intra-Europe Business and longhaul Business are substantial–this review primarily addresses the intercontinental long haul business class experience.

It’s notable that Lufthansa announced upgrades to the business class seating product several years ago, but the pandemic and production delays for some of the newer aircraft planned to join the fleet mean that the existing business class product will be the standard for a few more years to come.

Passengers who prefer an open plan business class cabin instead of one with highly engineered seats with lots of plastic dividers will appreciate Lufthansa’s spacious, cushy seating.

The Lufthansa business class experience at the airport

Lufthansa business class lounge.

The Lufthansa business class lounge

Lufthansa’s lounge experience for business class customers is extraordinary, for in many cities the airline operates separate lounges for passengers traveling business class, and frequent fliers. Lufthansa’s Business Lounges generally offer a standard degree of comfort, with self-service coffee, soft drink, and alcoholic beverage stations, and a selection of light snacks.

Lufthansa’s Senator Lounges, which are reserved for elite Senator members of the Lufthansa Miles & More program and Star Alliance member airline programs, are somewhat upgraded compared to Business Lounges. They generally have a wider selection of hot food, plus showers or spa services available at many locations.

Many locations without separate Business and Senator lounges will have signage for both at a single entrance; others will have a single entrance but two separate areas designated for Business and Senator lounges.

In the United States, Lufthansa business class passengers can also use the United Polaris lounges if their Lufthansa flight departs from an airport that has one in the same terminal.

Lufthansa business class check-in

Lufthansa operates separate check-in desks for business class passengers. Star Alliance Gold members are also able to check-in at these desks. Even when the lines are similar, Business Class passengers should endeavor to check-in at the dedicated desks because the agents are typically more versed in details business class passengers should be aware of (e.g. remembering to offer directions to the lounge at the departure airport or in a connecting city).

Lufthansa business class baggage allowance

Business class fares included extra checked and carry-on baggage allowance. Passengers can check in two bags up to 32 kilos / 70 pounds each and carry on two bags up to 8 kilos / 17 pounds each, plus a personal item.

Checked baggage is flagged for priority handling and should be among the first to be delivered to baggage claim upon arrival (if local regulations permit).

The Lufthansa business class experience in the air

Lufthansa business class seats.

Lufthansa business class seats.

Lufthansa business class has the same seats across all aircraft types in the fleet. It’s a lie-flat cloth seat with a comfy pillow and blanket. On widebody aircraft, the seats are in a 2-2-2 configuration on most aircraft, so there is no direct aisle access for passengers sitting in window seats.

A new business class seat was planned for introduction with the new 777-9 and 787 aircraft in 2020, but production delays have pushed that rollout to at least 2023. On the current fleet, Lufthansa will take delivery of an “interim” business class seat with aisle-access on Airbus A350-900 deliveries during 2022, but details have been scant.

For now, business class passengers on Lufthansa can depend on the current seat until further details on refurbishment are public.

  • A350:  There are three configurations of the A350. The one with 30 business class seats is the one with the new “interim” seat (the other configurations have either 36 or 48 of the current seat type).
  • A340-600:  The A340-600 has a business class cabin behind First Class and straddling the galley configuration at the second door. Unlike economy class, which has a unique setup for lavatories (they’re accessible by a set of stairs to the lower cargo deck) all business class lavatories are on the main deck.
  • A340-300 and A330-300:  The business class cabins on these aircraft are virtually identical, occupying the forwardmost zone in the aircraft.
  • 747-8:  The 747-8 has business class seating on both the Main Deck and Upper Deck. Seating on the Main Deck is primarily between the first and second doors. On the Upper Deck, seating is 2-2, and the row of windows is noticeably lower than on the Main Deck.
  • 747-400:  The 747-400 has business class seating on both the Main Deck and Upper Deck. Seating on the Main Deck is both in front of and behind the first door. Forward of the first door, seating is 2-2, with a single middle section seat (4D) in Row 4. Passengers in Rows 1 and 2 on this aircraft have the distinctive position of actually sitting farther forward than the cockpit (which is up and behind on the Upper Deck). Unlike the 747-8, seating is 2-3-2 on the Main Deck behind the first zone in the nose, so passengers may notice a distinctively more cramped experience in this section on this aircraft. On the Upper Deck, seating is 2-2, and the row of windows is noticeably lower than on the Main Deck.

Lufthansa Business Class passengers benefit from priority check-in, baggage handling, security screening and boarding procedures. Flight attendants are also careful to ensure business class passengers are able to deplane before economy and premium economy upon arrival. Lavatories are generally the same as in economy, but are sometimes stocked with extra amenities similar to the ones found in the business class amenity kits. Lufthansa provides business class passengers with an amenity kit containing socks, ear plugs, a toothbrush, and body products from L’Occitane.

Lufthansa business class meals

Lufthansa business class meal.

Lufthansa serves a three-course main meal in business class on long haul flights, followed by a pre-arrival meal with a choice of hot or cold option. Menus rotate every few months, and one of the menu options is typically meatless. Lufthansa also offers a wide selection of bread, from whole grain and white slices or lavash crackers to white, wheat, or pretzel buns.

An example menu for a flight from Frankfurt to Los Angeles offered a choice of appetizers of spiced salmon, marinated beef, or goat cheese tartare. Main courses included roast chicken, cod, or White Asparagus, with a selection of cheeses with chutneys and fruit or ice cream for dessert.

Passengers who wish a faster meal service can have an appetizer, cheese, and dessert all on a single tray. On specific night flights less than 8 hours departing after 8:00PM, flight attendants will serve all courses, including the main, on a single tray to allow more time for sleep.

On longer flights, a snack station is set up near the galleys so passengers can help themselves.

Alcohol is complimentary in business class. Lufthansa’s wine list is typically extensive, with several German whites and reds in addition to international selections and French Champagne. A standard selection of soft drinks and liquor is also available.

Lufthansa business class vs first class

First Class passengers on Lufthansa often have a separate airport lounge (and an entirely separate terminal at Frankfurt Airport), are offered private car transfers to and from the airport in select cities (and to the aircraft at some airports). Seating is more spacious and the cabin more intimate, with upgraded menus (think more choices, including caviar and better Champagne) and amenities.

How to book Lufthansa business class

How much does it cost for a business class ticket on lufthansa .

Roundtrip fares from New York to Europe generally start around $3,000 to $4,000. From the US West Coast it’s more common to see fares from $4,000 or more, although off-peak dates are often discounted. At Going we frequently find our Elite members cheap flights under $2,500 roundtrip.

How to upgrade to Lufthansa business class for free.

Lufthansa sells upgrades to business class for reasonable surcharges on a per-segment basis once booking is completed. Lufthansa does not typically upgrade passengers to business class for free unless needed to alleviate overbooking, an equipment swap, or some other extraordinary situation.

How much does it cost to upgrade to business class on Lufthansa?

On a recent flight from Frankfurt to Toronto, we noticed an upgrade offer to business class from premium economy for about $500 USD, although upgrade offers are typically based on availability of seats; the price fluctuated somewhat as seats continued to sell prior to departure.

How many miles to upgrade to Lufthansa business class?

Lufthansa Miles & More members can generally upgrade for 20,000 to 50,000 miles per segment, depending on the fare and class of service they originally booked. Passengers with miles in other Star Alliance member airline programs may have limited ability to upgrade from select fares.

lufthansa business class tour

Lufthansa business class is a fine product, but it’s beginning to lag behind its competitors who have already retrofitted with new aisle-access seats with more privacy dividers. As these products roll out across the Lufthansa fleet in the coming years, it will be a bit more on par with its peers. In the meantime, the courteous service and good food Lufthansa is also known for won’t be changing, and travelers in business class can still look forward to a pleasant journey.

The Best Ways To Book Lufthansa Business Class Using Points [Step-by-Step]

A Look Inside the Lufthansa Business Class Cabin

When you think about air travel to and from Europe, there’s a good chance Lufthansa comes to mind. That’s no accident! Lufthansa has long been considered one of the best ways to fly there.

Even with increased competition from carriers in the Middle East and Asia, Lufthansa has continued to shine with its first class product . However, we need to be realistic about Lufthansa business class.

It’s a comfortable flight that provides Lufthansa business class lounge access and quality service, but it lags behind other business class ticket options.

Let’s dig into the pros and cons and discuss how you can book this product with points.

A Lufthansa business class seat might be just what you’re looking for on a flight, but you should get a clear picture of what to expect before you book.

Air France 777 Business Class Business Class Cabin From Front

It doesn’t have an inflight bar like Emirates business class or the privacy of Delta One Suites , but the seats are comfortable and you will enjoy your flight. Additionally, all seats are fully lie-flat to ensure you can sleep soundly on your international long-haul flights.

If you’re looking for the best business class seat on Lufthansa, choose a seat in the middle section. While these seats might not provide great privacy, each one does have direct aisle access. You won’t have to climb over someone when you need to stretch your legs, and the flight attendant won’t have to reach over someone to hand you drinks and meal service like they do with the window section passengers.

Lufthansa-Business-Class-Lounge

Whether you’re traveling for work or for fun, a business class lounge can play an important part in your travel experience. With buffet dining and beverage options ranging from coffee and tea to beer, wine, and spirits, you will surely enjoy yourself.

How To Book Lufthansa Business Class

Now that you know what to expect from your experience, let’s dive into booking your flight. As a Star Alliance member, Lufthansa has plenty of frequent flyer programs you can use to book its business class product.

We’re going to review 6 options here: Air Canada Aeroplan , ANA Mileage Club , Asiana Club , Avianca LifeMiles , Miles & More , and United MileagePlus .

One of our favorite options to book business class award tickets on Lufthansa is through Air Canada’s Aeroplan program .

For flights between the U.S. and Germany, Aeroplan will charge you based on your itinerary’s total flight distance. On a one-way business class ticket, the amount will range from 60,000 to 70,000 Aeroplan points.

It’s easy to search for and book award flights online. Here’s the simple booking process:

  • Visit the Air Canada website .
  • In the top-right area of the homepage, hover over the button that says Sign in . Click  Sign in .
  • Enter your Air Canada Aeroplan login details and click Sign in .
  • You’ll see a search box on the homepage. First, toggle the slider that says Points.
  • Choose Round-trip  or  One-way . Enter your trip details and click  Find.
  • If you’re planning on booking a stopover for 5,000 miles extra, you must find availability for each segment and then call Aeroplan at 800-361-5373 to book your ticket.

Hot Tip:  Check out our Aeroplan region definition guide to make it easy to find out how many miles you need to book your award.

Earning Air Canada Aeroplan Points

If you need Aeroplan points, the program is an American Express transfer partner , Capital One miles transfer partner,  and Chase Ultimate Rewards transfer partner points at a 1:1 ratio almost instantly.

Lastly, Marriott Bonvoy has a 3:1 transfer ratio with a bonus of 5,000 miles if you transfer 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points to Air Canada Aeroplan. Marriott Bonvoy transfers take 5 business days.

Normally, ANA Mileage Club would always be at the #1 position in our list, but there’s an additional layer that complicates the decision of which frequent flyer program to use: fuel surcharges .

Lufthansa and almost all of its portfolio airlines impose gigantic fuel surcharges in excess of $1,000 per round-trip ticket, which can really bring the cost of your award redemption up.

So even though ANA offers the best redemption rates of a 1:1 transferable currency (Amex), you’ll need to think about whether it’s worth it to save your points and pay higher taxes and fees or redeem more points and pay lower taxes and fees.

Here’s how much you’ll pay for a round-trip business class flight between the U.S. and Europe:

We recommend following these steps to first find availability on United’s website and then book the ticket on ANA’s website:

  • Use United’s website to search for award availability.
  • Go to ANA’s U.S. homepage once you’ve located availability on United’s website.
  • On the left-hand box, click F light Awards .
  • Log into your ANA Mileage Club account.
  • Enter your  ANA Mileage Club login credentials .
  • Choose  Round trip  or  Multiple Cities/Mixed Classes .
  • Enter your flight information and click Search .
  • Select your flights and pay for taxes and fees with a credit card.

Here’s what a successful award search for Lufthansa business class would look like on ANA Mileage Club’s website:

Earning ANA Mileage Club Miles

You can earn ANA miles through transfer partnerships with Amex (1:1) or Marriott Bonvoy (3:1 with a 5,000-mile bonus after transferring 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points).

Amex and Marriott Bonvoy transfers take 3 and 4 business days, respectively.

Our next option isn’t as well known as the others, but don’t count it out! Asiana Airlines’ frequent flyer program, Asiana Club , offers some incredible mileage prices, assuming you are able to actually accrue these elusive miles .

These miles provide one of the best options for booking a Lufthansa business class ticket.

Asiana-Airlines-Award-Chart

Here’s how much it’d cost to book a Lufthansa business class ticket between the U.S. and Europe using Asiana miles:

Unlike the previous options, this one requires a phone call to Asiana Club.

You must reserve and have your ticket issued 3 days prior to departure, which prevents snagging last-minute awards.

Here’s what you need to know to book your Lufthansa business class flight using Asiana miles:

  • Search for availability using United’s site (see steps above).
  • The U.S. ticketing department is open between 8:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. PST (Monday to Friday, except for public holidays).
  • Tell the phone representative you’d like to book an award with Star Alliance partner Lufthansa.
  • Provide your travel dates and flight numbers.
  • Once you confirm space, you will be prompted to give your credit card to cover any necessary taxes and fees.

Asiana Airlines will pass on all carrier-imposed surcharges, so be aware of that going into the process.

Asiana Airlines’ only transfer partner is Marriott Bonvoy , which comes at a 3:1 ratio with a 5,000-mile bonus for every 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points transferred to Asiana. That means if you transfer 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points to Asiana, you’ll wind up with 25,000 Asiana miles.

Avianca’s LifeMiles frequent flyer program offers excellent redemption rates on Lufthansa business class, especially when you consider that it doesn’t pass on any fuel surcharges.

On top of that, you’ll find that there are many ways to earn LifeMiles!

And while the LifeMiles search engine gets a lot of flak in the context of booking Lufthansa first class, there are fewer issues when booking Lufthansa business class .

Here’s the award chart for U.S.-Europe itineraries:

Importantly, you’ll see that your total taxes and fees charged will be in the ballpark of $40, making this a great deal.

Here’s how to book your Lufthansa business class flight with LifeMiles:

  • Go to the  LifeMiles  website.
  • The site should display in Spanish. Change the language to English by clicking on the flag icon in the top-right corner and clicking English.
  • After getting sent to the English site, log into your LifeMiles account.
  • Click Fly on the homepage’s top banner after logging in.
  • On the flight search page, click on the drop-down menu that says Smart Search and change it to Lufthansa.
  • Fill in the search box, choose one-way or round-trip , and click  Find Flights .
  • Select your travel dates.
  • Complete the booking by redeeming your LifeMiles and using a credit card for taxes and fees.

Earning Avianca LifeMiles

Currently, LifeMiles is transfer partners with Amex Membership Rewards ,  Citi ThankYou Rewards ,  Capital One Miles ,  Brex Rewards , and  Marriott Bonvoy .

All of these except Marriott Bonvoy transfer at a 1:1 ratio almost instantly. With Marriott Bonvoy, you’ll transfer at a 3:1 ratio and transfers take around 1 business day.

If you combine these redemption prices with a transfer ratio (usually 15% to 30%) and/or an award discount sale (usually 10% to 20%), you could significantly reduce your points outlay.

The Miles & More program is actually the loyalty program for several airlines owned by the Lufthansa Group. In addition to Lufthansa, this includes Austrian Airlines, SWISS Air, Brussels Airlines, LOT Polish Airlines, and Croatia Airlines.

Miles & More Award Chart

To search for award availability online, you must have at least 7,000 miles in your Miles & More account. Otherwise, you will need to contact the U.S. Lufthansa call center at 800-581-6400.

Hot Tip: Child tickets for flights on Adria Airways, Austrian Airlines, Air Dolomiti, Brussels Airlines, Croatia Airlines, Eurowings, LOT Polish Airlines, Lufthansa, Luxair, and SWISS can be booked at a 25% mileage discount.

If you have the required miles to search online, follow these simple steps to book:

  • Go to Miles & More’s website .
  • Log into your Miles & More account.
  • Select your travel dates and route.
  • Select Business  as your class of service.
  • Miles & More will show award availability for all Miles & More airlines, so make sure you select a Lufthansa flight as opposed to a Brussels Airlines flight, for example.

Miles & More requires you to pay all carrier-imposed surcharges on award tickets, and they can be pretty steep on Lufthansa. Note that the fees are lower when booking a flight from Europe to the U.S. rather than from the U.S. to Europe .

Hot Tip: If you are booking a round-trip journey, check to see if 2 one-way bookings will require lower fees than a round-trip booking.

Earning Miles & More Miles

Due to the lack of transfer partners, the best way to earn Miles & More miles (other than booking an eligible revenue flight) is with the co-branded Lufthansa Miles & More credit cards from Barclays.

Probably the most well-known option in the U.S., United MileagePlus has been the go-to method for many people when booking business class awards on Lufthansa. Fortunately, United award bookings do not incur the high carrier-imposed surcharges, saving you upwards of $700 in each direction .

The program does, however, charge more miles for flying on a partner airline than United metal, so you’ll pay a bit more when booking on Lufthansa.

United got rid of its award chart and now relies on a dynamic pricing schedule, but you can expect to pay the following prices for a Saver award:

As you can see, no fuel surcharges are passed on!

You can book Lufthansa business class with United by following these steps:

  • Visit United’s website .
  • Sign in to your account.
  • Select Book with miles .
  • Select your travel dates and your route.
  • Select your cabin of choice (business).
  • Select your flight (make sure it is operated by Lufthansa (LH)).
  • Review your flight choice and confirm your reservation by redeeming your miles and paying for taxes and fees.

Earning United MileagePlus Miles

You can transfer Chase points at a 1:1 ratio or Marriott Bonvoy points at a 3:1.1 ratio with a 5,500-mile bonus after transferring 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points.

Transfers from Chase are instant, while Marriott Bonvoy takes approximately 3 business days to transfer points.

There’s also the option to earn United miles directly with a co-branded United credit card by Chase .

There are several other Star Alliance partners that can provide decent award redemptions. Some other programs you might want to check out are Aegean Airlines Miles+Bonus and Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles .

Miles & More sometimes runs award sales called Mileage Bargains . These deals are some of the best ways to use Miles & More to book a Lufthansa business class ticket on transatlantic flights.

Rather than the standard 112,000 miles required, you can potentially fly round-trip in business class for just 56,000 miles!

If you’re getting creative with your travel and are looking for fun ways to use your Miles & More miles, you can book business class from Germany to Africa or the Caribbean using Mileage Bargains for an utterly massive discount.

We’re talking about redeeming 18,000 to 32,000 miles instead of 70,000 to 127,000 miles, literally up to 80% off !

Just bear in mind that you will still be on the hook for carrier-imposed surcharges.

But let’s assume you’re booking a simple, nonstop round-trip flight between the U.S. and Germany in business class. Here’s the table comparing all of the mileage costs:

A one-way award from the U.S. will include roughly $750 in taxes and fees while a one-way from Germany to the U.S. will be around $450. Depending on your origin in Europe, the taxes and fees will vary.

As you can tell, the best round-trip deal is Asiana Club (with Marriott Bonvoy points) or ANA miles (with Amex points), though both come with huge fuel surcharges.

If you have a pile of Chase Ultimate Rewards points, it’s a no-brainer to transfer them to Air Canada Aeroplan. Don’t forget you can add a stopover for 5,000 miles extra.

With Citi ThankYou Rewards, the best transfer partner is Avianca LifeMiles. The same is true if you have Capital One miles since LifeMiles has a much-improved 1:1 transfer ratio.

Here are each frequent flyer programs’ stopover and open-jaw regulations:

  • ANA Mileage Club allows 1 complimentary open-jaw and 1 stopover on all award bookings
  • Avianca LifeMiles doesn’t allow stopovers at all
  • Air Canada Aeroplan allows 1 complimentary stopover for an extra 5,000 miles, even on one-way bookings
  • Miles & More may allow stopovers and open-jaws, but you must contact your local Miles & More service team to get information about its policies
  • Asiana Club offers has complicated stopover rules for its partner airlines that would generally only apply for longer itineraries (you may end up paying more in miles)
  • United MileagePlus has the Excursionist Perk , which allows a stopover on select itineraries

Here are some fantastic redemptions you can make from the U.S. to Germany:

  • Boston (BOS) – Frankfurt (FRA) – Dusseldorf (DUS) one-way in Lufthansa business class with a stopover in Frankfurt for 60,000 Aeroplan points + ~$41 in taxes and fees
  • Chicago (ORD) – Frankfurt (FRA)  one-way in Lufthansa business class for 56,000 Miles & More miles + $750 in taxes and fees
  • Denver (DEN) – Munich (MUC)  one-way in Lufthansa business class for 40,000 Asiana miles + $750 in taxes and fees
  • Los Angeles (LAX) – Munich (MUC) – Berlin (BER) round-trip in Lufthansa business class with a stopover in Munich for 88,000 ANA miles + $1,581 in taxes and fees
  • Miami (MIA) – Frankfurt (FRA) one-way in Lufthansa business class for 63,000 LifeMiles  + $38 in taxes and fees
  • San Francisco (SFO) – Frankfurt (FRA) one-way in Lufthansa business class from 77,000 United miles + $5.60 in taxes and fees

If you want to book Lufthansa business class, there’s an almost overwhelming number of ways you can go about this.

And it’s also complicated by the fact that Lufthansa levies humongous fuel surcharges, forcing you to think about the trade-offs of redeeming more points versus spending more on taxes and fees.

If you’re looking for the absolute best deal with Amex points, you’ll redeem just 88,000 points for round-trip business class, though that comes with a total taxes and fees of $1,581.

If you want to avoid fuel surcharges, both Air Canada Aeroplan and Avianca LifeMiles will help you achieve this. Aeroplan is the best option to use for all itineraries under 4,000 miles in total flight distance, costing 60,000 points one-way; Avianca LifeMiles is the best option for all other itineraries, coming in at 63,000 LifeMiles one-way.

Chase Ultimate Rewards points are best transferred to Aeroplan or United MileagePlus, though we recommend Aeroplan to redeem fewer points.

Capital One Miles or Citi ThankYou Rewards loyalists should use LifeMiles due to the 1:1 ratio.

Now, let’s spell out all of the possible transfer partners:

  • American Express transfers to ANA Mileage Club (3 business days), Avianca LifeMiles (instantly), and Air Canada Aeroplan (instantly) at a 1:1 ratio.
  • Brex Rewards transfers to Avianca LifeMiles instantly at a 1:1 ratio.
  • Chase Ultimate Rewards transfers to both Air Canada Aeroplan and United MileagePlus instantly at a 1:1 ratio.
  • Citi ThankYou Rewards transfers to Avianca LifeMiles instantly at a 1:1 ratio.
  • Capital One Miles transfers almost instantly to Avianca LifeMiles and Air Canada Aeroplan at a 1:1 ratio.
  • Marriott Bonvoy transfers to Avianca LifeMiles (1 day), Air Canada Aeroplan (5 days), ANA Mileage Club (4 days), and Asiana Club (4 days) at a 3:1 ratio and to United (3 days) at a slightly better 3:1.1 ratio.

It’s also important to note that Amex, Brex, and Citi have all offered transfer bonuses of 15% to 30% to LifeMiles in the past.

Aeroplan transfer bonuses have been offered by Amex, though these are a bit rarer. You can almost never count on a transfer bonus to ANA Mileage Club or United MileagePlus.

Unfortunately, there is no way to transfer points to Lufthansa Miles & More, though there is a co-branded credit card issued by Barclays.

Once you have determined when you want to travel, start your award search. Availability with Miles & More (as well as Lufthansa’s partners) is generally pretty good, though it’s not usually possible to plan extremely far out in advance.

Unlike Lufthansa first class award space, which is only released to partners about 2 weeks prior to departure, business class is available long before that, typically around 2 months in advance .

What Do You Get With Lufthansa Business Class?

While the business class cabin doesn’t have the same amazing reputation as Lufthansa first class, it does provide a comfortable long-haul option.

Star Alliance is the largest airline alliance in the world, which means you will have a wide selection of business class lounges to enjoy across the globe. These lounges are often quite spacious with plenty of room to work or just relax.

Lufthansa Senator Lounge B Frankfurt wine selection

Even though you’re just in business class, Lufthansa still provides Champagne and a nice selection of wine to make your flight a little bit more enjoyable.

Lufthansa has also unveiled new German-inspired menus for short- and medium-haul routes .

Lufthansa-Welcome-Lounge-Shower

If you are flying into Frankfurt , Germany, you will have access to the Lufthansa Business Class Lounge. Here you can enjoy a meal, some quiet time, or even do a little work before starting your day in Frankfurt.

Perhaps the best perk of the Lufthansa Welcome Lounge is the showers. After a long flight, a shower can be just what you need to freshen up before a meeting or a German adventure!

Let’s be clear: this business class cabin is not at the same level as Cathay Pacific , Qatar Airways , or Singapore Airlines . That being said, if you are looking for a comfortable seat on a long-haul flight (and maybe some Champagne!), Lufthansa business class will suit you just fine.

Review of Lufthansa Business Class

lufthansa business class tour

Germany's national airline - Lufthansa - offers an efficient, respectable and consistent travel experience. From sleek and generous airport lounges to an inflight service that continues to improve, Lufthansa Business Class passengers are always in for an efficient and comfortable journey.

Lufthansa's global route map serves five continents from its Frankfurt and Munich hubs. Not only does the airline offer impressive European connectivity, but it also bridges far-flung places with a hearty schedule that caters to both business and leisure fliers.

The airline is part of Star Alliance, and members of any of its individual airline frequent flier programs can earn and redeem miles with Lufthansa. Other partner airlines in the alliance include Air Canada, United, Avianca, Air New Zealand, TAP Air Portugal, Thai Airways and EVA Air. Lufthansa's frequent flier program, Miles & More , has thousands of members who take advantage of its valuable miles, elite status and numerous program benefits, even when travelling on other Star Alliance airlines.

Airport experience

With a dual hub system in Frankfurt and Munich, Lufthansa is well-equipped to offer numerous connections and top-notch facilities, given the volume of passengers that it carries. Premium check-in areas and security lines are of huge advantage at its two main hubs, and it offers special check-in lanes and other boarding perks at almost all other departure airports.

Read more about Lufthansa services at Frankfurt Airport or Munich Airport on Lufthansa.com .

Lufthansa's German hubs feature excellent lounges for Business Class passengers with an even more elevated option, Senator Lounges, for its most frequent fliers. Star Alliance Gold travellers from any cabin can also use them. Expect open bars with tasty wine, German beer and cocktails, plus buffets with hot and cold items. Business Class and Senator Lounges are similar in style, with the main difference in the food and beverage offerings. In the Frankfurt and Munich lounges, showers are an especially nice option for those in transit who want to refresh during their journey.

Other notable features of Lufthansa's lounges include relaxation areas, soft German pretzels, a variety of salty and sweet snacks, including Haribo Gummy Bears and a range of desserts.

Free Wi-Fi, private workstations and phone booths, international magazines and newspapers, and power outlets are all available in the lounges.

Lufthansa's network of lounges includes many German airports, including Berlin, Dusseldorf and Hamburg. Globally, passengers will find lounges in airports including Detroit, Dubai, London Heathrow, Milan Malpensa, Newark and New York JFK.

At Frankfurt Airport, a dedicated Welcome Lounge is available for arriving Business Class passengers. The lounge features shower facilities, a quiet zone, workstations, and a bistro area with a breakfast buffet.

When flying from destinations without a Lufthansa-branded facility, Business Class passengers can access other premium lounges, including those belonging to other Star Alliance members. Lufthansa's on-the-ground experience is solid and deserves kudos for a wide network of well-provisioned lounges.

Cabin & Seat

Lufthansa's long-haul fleet consists of various aircraft types, including the double-decker Airbus A380 , Boeing 747 and numerous Airbus A330 , A340 and A350 aircraft along with newly acquired Boeing 787 Dreamliners , intended to replace the A340-300 over time. The airline is undergoing the largest investment in its history – introducing the Allegris range of products and a completely redesigned Business Class cabin with direct aisle access.

The new Allegris generation of Business Class seats converts to a fully-flat bed with an extra-long sleeping area of 2.2 metres. Passengers enjoy a greater degree of privacy from the alternating herringbone configuration of 1-2-1 rows with 1-1-1 rows containing a central throne seat which offers passengers increased desk space. Couples will enjoy the central double seats with a narrower pitch, and thanks to holders on selected seats, families can have a baby cot alongside them. The front row of the Business Class cabin sees the all-new oversized Business Plus Suites, providing even more space, high sliding privacy doors, a large IFE screen and a personal wardrobe. All seats feature high-definition in-flight entertainment screens with noise-cancelling headphones, wireless charging and Bluetooth connectivity. A multi-use tablet controls the seating positions, ventilation, lighting and entertainment settings.

The colour tone of the Lufthansa Business Class cabin features grey, navy and brown accents with the airline's crane logo emblazoned on the wall. While newer aircraft such as the Boeing 777-9s – due to arrive in 2025 - A350-900s and Boeing 787-9s will feature the latest Allegris products, Lufthansa's older fleet of Boeing 747s will continue with the existing 2-2-2- Business Class main cabin configuration and a single-aisle 2-2 configuration on the upper deck. However, Lufthansa plans to retrofit the 747-8s in the future.

There is no charge to reserve seats in advance on Lufthansa, which is highly recommended to ensure the most comfortable flight. One criticism of Lufthansa's older Business Class seat is that the footrest for many seats is close to the neighbouring seat. This means it is not uncommon for people's feet to touch, especially in the centre seats. These seats are also angled toward one another. There are no privacy dividers between any seats.

On some aircraft like the Airbus A350, Lufthansa offers a tail camera allowing those seated in the centre section to see exterior views.

Seats have electronic controls giving many different positional options, including a slightly reclined position, cradled angle to enjoy a movie or fully flat for maximum rest. Tray tables extend from the side of the seat and are wide enough for working on a laptop, watching an iPad or tablet or enjoying the airline's impressive catering.

A pillow and blanket come wrapped in a ribbon, and storage pockets on the side of the seat hold a water bottle and amenity kit. On especially long flights, the airline provides a seat topper similar to a mattress pad for extra cushioning.

The  flight search on BusinessClass.com  includes images, videos and seat maps for most airlines and aircraft. Search results also include details such as seat pitch, width and recline. This way you can see the seat and cabin configuration of the flight in which you are interested, before making your choice.

Airline review Cabin & Seat - Lufthansa - 9

A few years ago, Lufthansa overhauled its Business Class dining experience to be more similar to what is normally reserved for First Class. For the main service, everything is served atop a linen-lined table instead of trays. It is a special touch that few other airlines offer in Business Class - not to mention the number of options the airline gives its passengers on long flights.

Rather than use unsightly trolleys for food service in the aisles, everything is served from the galley by a dedicated flight attendant that takes responsibility for a subsection of the cabin. This allows for more personal interaction between passengers & crew and feels more like a restaurant experience.

Drinks and nuts preface the meal, and Lufthansa gets additional high marks for using full-size wine glasses rather than the tiny thimbles used on many other carriers. German beer is often presented in glass bottles, which continues the restaurant-style approach.

Soon, a choice of appetisers and salads arrive with warm bread from a basket. Separate bread plates, silverware and salt and pepper shakers are also presented directly on the linen-lined table. The main course on long-haul flights changes every two months and typically consists of a beef, poultry, seafood or pasta selection. Lufthansa earns praise for its holiday-themed meals throughout the year, including items like guinea fowl around Christmas.

After the hot main course, dessert follows, offering a sweet course or fruit and cheese selection with after-dinner drinks. A cold express meal service is available at any time in place of the complete dinner service for passengers requiring more time to relax or work and consists of a choice of appetiser, cheese and dessert.

Depending on the length of the flight, a second meal is served on a tray before landing, appropriate to the time of day - either a cold or hot breakfast or dinner with a dessert option.

The service is leisurely albeit efficient, allowing for an enjoyable meal without cutting into time to rest, work or enjoy the entertainment system.

On late-night departures - or shorter redeye flights - the meal service is abbreviated in favour of more sleeping time.

Information about the Lufthansa Business Class service on short night flights .

Unfortunately, Lufthansa does not offer a dine-on-demand service, but a small snacking station is often available in the galley to tide passengers over until the next meal. Most cabin crew will also oblige any request to save a meal for a specific time if they can.

Unlike most other airlines, Lufthansa has a useful functionality on its website to let you check the menu for your Lufthansa flight . Menu cards are published about two months before departure.

Special meals for dietary and religious requirements are always available, but these must be reserved in advance. In addition, Lufthansa usually services destination-friendly dishes on many flights. For example, on Indian flights, regional dishes, always vegetarian-friendly, are stocked in great quantity.

A service much appreciated by families is the special children´s menu developed by Alexander Herrmann. Children´s meals can be booked up to 24 hours before departure.

A tray of welcome drinks, including water, juice or sparkling wine, is a tradition aboard Lufthansa. After takeoff, a full bar includes different labels of Champagne and wine. These can consist of Champagne Duval-Leroy Brut Reserve, three white and three red wines, beer including Warsteiner Premium lager and Erdinger wheat beer – not to mention a long list of liqueurs and spirits, including Jack Daniel's and Bombay Sapphire Gin.

Master of Wine Markus Del Monego oversees the selection of wines to be served in Lufthansa Business Class.

Other nice touches include still or sparkling water, non-alcoholic beer, fruit juices, and Dallmayr Kaffee Premium Selection coffee. Espresso and numerous hot teas are also on the menu.

The  flight search on BusinessClass.com  includes information on which Champagne is served in Business Class and First Class on many airlines. We do our best to keep track of any changes, but feel free to  let us know  if there is something we missed.

Lufthansa crews display German efficiency although service can vary depending on each person’s personality. Some flight attendants are more talkative than others, but all deliver upon the high standards for which the airline is known.

Flights to Asia may include native cabin crew based at the destination, allowing Lufthansa to offer a customised service experience and local languages.

During Oktoberfest, you may notice some crew donning traditional German attire, which is a jovial way to bring a regional touch to 35,000 feet, even for passengers just transiting Germany. Ground staff sometimes participate in this initiative.

Entertainment

Instead of providing individually wrapped headsets to each passenger, the airline has them hard-wired to each seat. Amenity kits include earpiece covers as a sanitary measure. This approach may not appeal to everyone, but it is both eco and cost-friendly for the airline. Sound quality is decent, although the entertainment options vary by aircraft type.

Most planes have large touch-screen entertainment systems, from Hollywood cinema to short subject films, sitcoms, cartoons and live sports on long-haul flights. There is something for every age level and personal taste. Lufthansa has always been a leader in audio entertainment, with a vast selection of global music, including African, Arabic, Korean, Indian and Latino, as well as a selection of audiobooks, podcasts and games.

The option to use a remote control for the screen is typically available, and depending upon aircraft type, it can be responsive, albeit sometimes difficult to manoeuvre.

Detailed information about inflight entertainment and the current programme is available on lufthansa.com.

Wi-Fi is available aboard the majority of the airline’s aircraft with pricing based on the type of speed needed. The cheapest option is best for texting while faster speeds are good for email or downloading files. Data caps mean that those with a lot of work to accomplish will want to buy the most expensive plan.

Amenities & Facilities

Lufthansa provides an excellent range of amenity kits that rotate seasonally; some are more functional than others. There are also unique versions for holiday periods that are particularly festive. Inside, they include an eye mask, socks, dental kits and other inflight necessities like lotions and lip balms. Customers on overnight flights also receive comfortable sleeping shirts/pyjamas.

Eye masks, mouthwash, disinfecting wipes, dental kits and moist towelettes are stocked in the lavatories.

Before any meal, hot towels give passengers a chance to refresh.

On widebody aircraft, parents flying with an infant can pre-reserve a bassinet to use at selected seats in the cabin.

Short & Medium Haul

While intra-European flights are almost always operated with narrow-body aircraft and economy class-style seats with the centre seat blocked, Lufthansa deserves credit for its consistent inflight service. New Lufthansa menus offer Business Class passengers on short- and medium-haul flights Tasting HEIMAT – a rotation of classic German cuisine from six different German cities, accompanied by a curated choice of excellent wines. Special meals and children's meals are available to order up to 24 hours before departure on flights of more than 75 minutes duration.

The airline offers an open bar, including a choice of red or white wine, sparkling wine or beer, and a decent cocktail selection. Juices, soft drinks and still or sparkling water round out the choice. Aisle carts deliver service, but it is usually quite attentive and friendly.

Sustainability

Like other airlines, Lufthansa places a strong focus on being environmentally responsible. It offers a carbon neutral option where travellers can offset the environmental impact of their flight by paying a small fee. The airline is also investing in more fuel-efficient aircraft and operational measures on the ground and in the air.

Recycling programs in the lounges and onboard its flights continue the same theme. Catering products use sustainable materials with a focus on reducing waste. Lufthansa is also using one of its aircraft to help collect environmental data for climate research.

The  flight search on BusinessClass.com  includes information on CO2 emissions for each flight. Our quality algorithms also give a higher score to flights operated by the most modern and environmentally friendly aircraft.

German Efficiency: Lufthansa's A330-300X in Business Class from Frankfurt to Atlanta

Katie Genter

Update: Some offers mentioned below are no longer available. View the current offers here .

After spending a few months in Europe, it was time for my cat, Grace , and me to return to the US. Naturally, we wanted to do it in comfort and at a good price.

Because of Grace, I needed a pet-friendly airline that traveled between Madrid (MAD) and Atlanta (ATL) with no more than one stop and reasonable connection times. Lufthansa fit the bill, both in terms of schedule, relatively low transatlantic pet fees and award availability.

I booked my ticket at the last minute, when there wasn't any economy availability but many business-class seats, so I flew Lufthansa's A330-300X in business class from Frankfurt (FRA) to Atlanta. (The "X" denotes those A330-300s designed specifically for longer ranges and higher maximum takeoff weight.)

Booking and Check-in

Award availability can be scarce, and paid tickets can be very expensive at the end of the summer season, but there were ample seats in Lufthansa business class on the dates I was considering.

lufthansa business class tour

I bought my business-class ticket using Avianca LifeMiles . The ticket cost 63,000 LifeMiles , which TPG's latest valuations pegged at $1,071. While I could have transferred all of the LifeMiles that I needed from Citi ThankYou Points , there was a promotion and a sweet spot that let me purchase up to 78% of the miles that I needed at just 1.5 cents per point .

First, my husband, JT, transferred 14,000 points from Citi to his LifeMiles account and then transferred them to me with a 100% bonus for a cost of $210. Then, I used these 28,000 LifeMiles and paid $550 to purchase the other 35,000 LifeMiles I needed for the redemption. I also needed to pay $74.02 in taxes and fees on the award ticket. I put the purchased miles as well as the taxes and fees on the Chase Sapphire Reserve in order to take advantage of the card's excellent travel protections .

lufthansa business class tour

I wasn't able to select seats until I reached the airport because, one, I booked my ticket less than 52 hours before departure ( seat selection before check-in is only available up to 52 hours before departure) , and, two, I couldn't check in online, since I was traveling with a pet. I probably could have called to get a seat, but based on the seat map, there were plenty of desirable seats still available.

lufthansa business class tour

Check-in at the airport took a while because of seat selection, verification of Grace's European Union pet passport and visiting a separate desk to pay the 100-euro ($115) pet-in-cabin fee . Luckily, I had access to the business-class check-in line, since the economy check-in line was long.

lufthansa business class tour

Connection and Boarding

My connecting flight from Madrid arrived over an hour late. This meant I hurried past the Lufthansa lounges on my long trek from the A gates, through immigration and to Gate Z69. I arrived at the gate just 12 minutes before departure.

Stopped long enough to take a picture of the lounge entrance.

Since I arrived at the gate near the end of boarding, there wasn't much of a queue to board. Another passenger was in my seat (5D) when I arrived and asked me to switch to a less desirable seat. I politely refused and thought that was the end of it — especially once 5F successfully switched with 5K. However, shortly after the boarding door closed, a flight attendant approached me and said I could move to 10A and have a pair of seats to myself. I happily accepted this offer and moved to 10A for the remainder of the flight.

lufthansa business class tour

Cabin and Seat

There were five rows of 2-2-2 seating in the forward business-class cabin and two rows of 2-2-2 seating in the rear business-class cabin. Bathrooms and the main business-class galley separated the two cabins. So, although the rear cabin had fewer passengers, there was more foot traffic, with flight attendants moving between the economy cabin and business-class galley throughout the flight.

lufthansa business class tour

The middle-section seats had the benefit of aisle access for both passengers. and the storage area under the footwell seemed to be the largest for these seats. The downside of these seats was that the seats are angled inward such that the footwells for both seats were adjacent to each other.

lufthansa business class tour

The pairs of seats next to the windows were reminiscent of American's 757-200 straddle-or-be-straddled vibe . The window seats didn't have direct aisle access, so you needed to decide whether you valued aisle access or the relative privacy and view that came with window seats.

lufthansa business class tour

If you're leaning toward a window seat, note that these seats had the smallest storage area under the footwell.

lufthansa business class tour

The bulkhead seats — like 10A, which I ended up sitting in — had slightly different shells in front of the seats. Specifically, the footwells were covered, and the glasses and coat hook were in slightly different positions.

lufthansa business class tour

The seats were narrow for business class at about 20 inches. Each seat had a small reading light built into its headrest. The headrest didn't have movable wings to support your head, but since the seat could lie flat, this wasn't an issue.

lufthansa business class tour

A panel on the armrest controlled the seat. There were three preset positions as well as the ability to customize the position of various parts of the seat. There was also a massaging lumbar support and the ability to adjust the firmness of the seat cushions. I found the seat to be very comfortable.

lufthansa business class tour

Despite the seat's narrow width, I could sleep comfortably on my right side facing away from the window or on my back. It was uncomfortable sleeping on my side facing the window because my knees hit the wall of the plane.

lufthansa business class tour

The tray table, which was large and sturdy, could be released from the center console.

By pressing a button and pushing down, the armrest could retract into the seat — but it didn't retract completely.

lufthansa business class tour

Each seat had two USB power outlets in a well on the side of the center console. There were also two universal power outlets on the front of the center console for the pair of seats to share.

The IFE had a surprising number of movies, TV shows, music and games. There were also three live TV stations, CNNi, EURO and SPORT24, as well as special wellness and kids categories. In wellness were two airplane-specific videos: inflight meditation and a seated airline yoga class.

lufthansa business class tour

The IFE screen wasn't a touchscreen, so you had to use a remote in the center console to navigate. It was difficult at first to maneuver the cursor, but I got the hang of it within a few minutes.

The tray table and IFE remote are stored in the center console.

Noise-canceling QC3 Bose headphones were provided in a compartment under the armrest.

lufthansa business class tour

These headphones were the type that sit on top of your ear. They were permanently attached to their compartment but could be unplugged from their two-prong socket if you wanted to plug in your own headphones instead.

lufthansa business class tour

At boarding, a pillow and plastic-wrapped blanket were on each seat. The pillow provided good back support but was also large enough to be a decent pillow for sleeping.

lufthansa business class tour

A bottle of water and an amenity kit also awaited passengers at boarding. These items were waiting in a compartment by the footwell for each seat.

lufthansa business class tour

The Reisenthel Collection amenity kit wins my award for most reusable: The "case" was a reusable, packable shopping bag.

lufthansa business class tour

It included: a blue, unadjustable, Lufthansa-branded eye mask with a nose flap and two bands on the back; a zip-top bag with a toothbrush, small tube of toothpaste, hand cream, "precious cream" and a breath mint; plastic-wrapped headphone ear covers; and cheap, plastic-wrapped earplugs.

lufthansa business class tour

There were two business-class bathrooms between the two business-class cabins.

lufthansa business class tour

Each of the business-class bathrooms contained soap, lotion and a box with mouthwash, razors with shaving cream and wet wipes. Another nice touch in the bathrooms: soft but durable paper towels.

lufthansa business class tour

Wi-Fi was available for $10 for one hour, $15.15 for four hours or $19 for the full flight. There were also a variety of membership programs that could provide access, including iPass and Boingo.

lufthansa business class tour

I considered using my Boingo account (it came with the Platinum Card® from American Express) but was scared away by a message saying Boingo would cost $0.23 per minute while in flight.

lufthansa business class tour

The Wi-Fi was surprisingly usable when compared with some of my recent Wi-Fi experiences on planes. Although most speed-test websites were blocked, Fast.com clocked the download at 3.4 MBps and the upload at 440 KBps.

Food and Beverage

Shortly after boarding, a flight attendant offered me a welcome drink of water, orange juice or rosé sparkling wine. Since I'd just hurried to the gate, I opted for water. Menus were distributed shortly before the boarding door closed by a flight attendant who introduced herself and welcomed me to the flight.

lufthansa business class tour

Forty-five minutes after takeoff, drink orders were taken and drinks were delivered with a small bowl of salted almonds.

lufthansa business class tour

Appetizers came after drinks. We could choose from: Asian roast-beef salad; spiced salmon with turnip celery salad, green pesto Frankfurt-style and pumpkin seeds; and goat cream cheese with mango salsa and arugula. I had the sliced salmon appetizer, which arrived exactly as described 70 minutes after takeoff. The salmon almost melted in my mouth.

lufthansa business class tour

Bowls of seasonal leaf salad with tomato, cucumber and wasabi dressing were offered from a tray 90 minutes after takeoff. The wasabi dressing was already on the salad, but frankly tasted more like ginger than wasabi.

lufthansa business class tour

The main course choices on this flight were: ragout of poularde with mushrooms, baby carrots and pea rice; prawns on Provencal vegetables with mixed rice; and ravioli with pesto and antipasti vegetables.

Main courses were served 95 minutes after takeoff. I ordered the ragout and found the chicken to be of good quality. The rice was spiced well and the carrots were tender and lightly seasoned. Trust me: The dish tasted better than it looked.

lufthansa business class tour

Dessert was offered shortly after dinner. There were three choices: Chaumes cheese, olive cheese, cream cheese and Spanish rosemary sheep's cheese accompanied by a chutney of quince, saffron-and pear; panna cotta with a compote of lemon, thyme, mango and passionfruit; and traditional Italian ice cream.

I got the ice cream and was expecting a sundae like in business class on some other airlines . Instead, I received a carton of ice cream on a plate. The mixture of chocolate and vanilla ice cream surprisingly had a layer of cherry sauce at the bottom.

lufthansa business class tour

About an hour and a half before landing, a smaller meal was served: minestrone soup; mixed salad with marinated Black Angus beef, walnuts, dried pears and macadamia-nut dressing; and seasonal fruit crumble cake.

lufthansa business class tour

As I was coming from Spain, the marinated beef reminded me of Iberian ham. The dried pears and walnuts went nicely with the salad, and the minestrone soup was pleasantly mild. It was also nice to see German pretzels as a bread option for this meal.

Various alcoholic drinks were available throughout the flight: Ferrari Rosé Brut (also the departure drink), Jacquart Brut Champagne, 2016 Rheingau riesling; 2016 Yealands Estate sauvignon blanc, 2014 Chateau Loirac Medoc, 2014 Lance Bouma Cape Cuvee; Warsteiner lager; Erdinger wheat beer; and various spirits.

The flight attendants on this flight were kind and proactive. A flight attendant was there to help with seating when I boarded and quickly helped out when I found another passenger in my seat. The flight attendant serving my section was friendly yet professional.

I found the meal service interesting, as the flight attendants often handed me dishes instead of placing them on my tray. A flight attendant also held out my selection of bread with tongs for me to grasp instead of depositing the bread on my bread plate. Neither of these aspects bothered me, but both were different than I'd experienced on other business-class flights.

Throughout the flight, the flight attendants periodically passed through the cabin providing water, apple juice and orange juice while inquiring whether passengers needed anything else.

Overall Impression

Lufthansa had a hard act to follow, as I'd flown Qatar's QSuite a few days earlier. Despite this, I was generally pleased with my Lufthansa business-class flight. The flight attendants were friendly, the Wi-Fi usable and the seat comfortable. However, the plane's interior, especially the lavatories and IFE, felt aged, and the meal selections didn't live up to my expectations. While this product isn't on par with the best in the world, it's a solid way to travel between North America and Europe in comfort.

Of course, my experience would have been notably different if I'd had a seatmate. As much as I like having a window, I'd choose a seat in the middle section on future flights to guarantee aisle access without having to worry about my seatmate climbing over me to get out.

Take a look inside Lufthansa's new business-class cabins with 7 seating options, including one with a personal wardrobe and minibar

  •  Lufthansa is introducing new business-class cabins with seven seating options.
  • The seats can be converted into beds and passengers are able to heat and cool them as they wish.

Lufthansa has unveiled its new business-class cabins for long-haul flights — and they include seven options for seats.

lufthansa business class tour

The most luxurious option is a suite, which includes a small personal minibar and a wardrobe. Single suites have a window view...

...while double suites, for people traveling with a companion, are located on the inside of the cabin.

lufthansa business class tour

The area of the suites ranges between 2.2 and 2.5 square meters, or between roughly 24 and 27 square feet, depending on the aircraft type, and are in the first row of the business-class cabin.

The suites have chest-high walls and sliding doors, which Lufthansa said give travelers more privacy.

The other seat options include ones with an extra work surface, window seats with more privacy with or without a baby bassinet, seats with extra-long beds of around 2.2 meters, double seats which can be combined to form a double berth, and classic business-class seats.

lufthansa business class tour

Boeing 787 planes will have 28 business-class seats, including four suites, while on Airbus A350 planes there will be 38 seats, including eight suites.

Lufthansa said all the seating options can convert into beds, have options for heating and cooling via a personal device, and come with "generous" shoulder space.

lufthansa business class tour

The seats also feature what Lufthansa calls a "shoulder sink-in," which the company said makes it more comfortable for people who sleep on their sides.

The new business-class cabin is part of Lufthansa's huge revamp of its long-haul flight offerings.

lufthansa business class tour

In total, more than 80 new aircraft will get the layouts, while some aircraft currently in service will have the layout retrofitted to their existing cabins.

The Boeing 747-8 At Lufthansa: Which Seats Are The Best In Each Class?

  • Lufthansa's 747-8 fleet includes economy, premium economy, business, and first class seats.
  • Economy seats A and K in row 27 offer more legroom, while seats B, C, H, and J in rows 45-47 offer more privacy.
  • First-class options include solo seats A and K for privacy or row 3 D/G for couples, all with premium services.

The Queen of the Skies has become a rare sight over the last few years, with many operators retiring the quadjets in favor of more modern and efficient aircraft. Luckily for Boeing 747 fans, Lufthansa still has a few in its fleet. The German carrier remains the largest operator of the passenger 747, with eight -400s and 19 -8s in service today.

While 2024 might be the last full year of operations for Lufthansa's older -400 models , the -8s will continue flying for a few more years. The newer generation aircraft currently serve long-haul destinations like Los Angeles (LAX), Singapore (SIN), and Johannesburg (JNB). If you book a flight on a Lufthansa 747-8, here are some of the best seats to look out for.

The best seats in economy class

Seats in each class.

Lufthansa's 747-8 fleet has an average age of 10.4 years, with the oldest aircraft at 12.4 and the youngest at 9.04 years. The airline offers four travel classes on its 747-8s - economy, premium economy, business, and first class. While each class offers a unique onboard experience, some seats are better than others, depending on their location. While there might be some variations, this article will focus on the configuration on most of Lufthansa's 747-8s. Below is the number of seats in each class:

Economy class seats

Seats in economy typically offer a pitch of 31 inches and a width of 17.1 inches. They can be found in rows 16-20 behind business and premium economy and in rows 27-49 behind the premium economy cabin. It is laid out in a 3-4-3 configuration, meaning seats B, E, F, and J are all middle seats, which should be avoided unless traveling with family or a group of friends.

On most aircraft, seats close to the bulkhead or in emergency exit rows are usually the best as they offer extra legroom. Row 27 might offer more legroom than other rows, so seats A and K would be the best options . Of course, it will come down to whether a passenger prefers a window or an aisle seat. However, the tray tables in this row are on the armrests, making them immovable, and there is also no under-seat storage.

Argentine President Picks Lufthansa Economy On The Boeing 747-8 For Trip To Davos

The extra legroom might outweigh all the cons when traveling on an extremely long flight. Some special seats can also be found at the back of the plane in rows 45-47. These rows are in a 2-4-2 configuration, so seats B, C, H, and J would be the perfect choice for couples looking for more privacy. However, rows 47-49 should be avoided as the seats may have limited recline, and their proximity to the lavatory may be bothersome.

Discover more aviation news about the passenger experience here.

The best seats in premium economy

Premium economy seats can be found in rows 21-25 in a 2-3-2 configuration. They are typically 19 inches wide and offer about 38 inches of pitch. The cabin will also be less crowded as there are only 32 seats. In addition to the extra legroom and wider seats, Lufthansa's premium economy offers more free baggage, enhanced services, and amenities.

The best seats in this cabin are in row 21, which only has four seats, with two on each side of the cabin. Seats A, C, H, and K may offer slightly more legroom due to the exit row. However, there might be some disturbances with a lavatory just behind the economy cabin. Ultimately, I would settle for seat A or K in row 21 .

Business class on the main and upper deck

Lufthansa's business class cabin is situated after first class in rows 4-11 on the main deck and 81-88 on the upper deck. All seats on the main and upper deck are the same, with the following dimensions:

The best main deck seats

Business class on the main deck is divided into two parts - the main section and a mini-section immediately behind. They are both arranged in a 2-2-2 configuration. Of course, business customers receive a lot more amenities , comfort, and services, so some might not care where they sit. However, some seats are still better than others.

Given the 2-2-2 layout, passengers in seats A and K will not have direct aisle access, which can be inconvenient when the passenger next to you has converted their seat into a bed. However, these seats do offer a window view. You might also want to avoid seats in rows 4,9, and 10 as their proximity to lavatories and galley might be bothersome. Seats 9A/C are also very close to the stairs, which can be a high-traffic area. Ultimately, seats D and G in rows 5 to 8 and row 11 would be ideal.

The upper deck

The upper deck is narrower, so the seats are in a 2-2 layout. Similarly, passengers with seats A and K will not have direct aisle access. A lavatory is at the front of the cabin; at the back are galleys, a staircase, and another lavatory.

Therefore, seats closer to the front of the cabin would be more peaceful and quiet. While they all have the same pitch and width, seats C and H in row 84 would be the best . Of course, if the cabin is not full, a window seat A/K would also be ideal.

Flight Review: Lufthansa Business Class - Boeing 747-8i - San Francisco (SFO) to Frankfurt (FRA)

The best first class seats.

Over the past decade, many airlines have abandoned first class to focus on an enhanced business class product and utilize more aircraft space. Lufthansa still offers first class on selected long-haul routes from its hubs in Frankfurt and Munich. Some of the perks include:

  • Valet parking service
  • Personal assistant
  • Going through the first class terminal at FRA
  • Access to first class lounges
  • Limousine service
  • Premium dining and fine wine

The first class cabin is right at the front of the plane, with eight open suites in a 1-1 layout in rows 1 and 2 and 1-2-1 in row 3. As first class offers an exclusive and premier travel experience, it is difficult to say which seats are better than others. All seats have the following dimensions:

For solo travelers, seats A and K on the extreme sides of the cabin would be best for privacy and the window view. For couples or friends that want to sit together, seats D and G in row 3 would be the best options. However, row 3's proximity to the galley might be an issue. In conclusion, all first-class seats are great, so it will come down to whether you want to sit alone or with a partner.

What can you do at Moscow City?

  • Dine in style: Moscow City is home to 100+ cafes and restaurants, including Europe’s highest restaurant and ice-cream shop
  • See Moscow like never before: Ascend to one of Moscow City’s observation decks for an unparalleled panorama of Moscow

Moscow City is a multifunctional complex in the west of Moscow, which has come to represent the booming business of Russia’s capital. Its skyscrapers enrich Moscow’s skyline, contrasting the medieval cupolas and Stalinist high-rises. Visitors to Moscow City can enjoy entertainment high in the sky, as the complex is home not just to offices, but to restaurants, cinemas, viewing platforms, and museums.

Moscow International Business Center (Moscow City)

History of Moscow City

Moscow City was first conceived in 1991 by honoured Soviet architect Boris Tkhor, who proposed to construct a business center in Moscow. It would be complete with gleaming skyscrapers rivalling those of New York and London, to reflect the new life and growing ambitions of post-Soviet Russia.

The chosen site was a stone quarry and disused industrial zone in western Moscow, in between the Third Ring Road and Moskva River. Initially, the territory was divided into 20 sections arranged in a horseshoe shape around a central zone. The skyscrapers would increase in height as they spiralled around the central section, with shorter structures built on the waterfront to give the taller buildings behind a view of the river.

Architect Gennady Sirota, who contributed to iconic projects such as the Olympic Sports Complex on Prospekt Mira, was selected as the chief architect, and many other world-famous architects were attracted to Moscow to realise their visions in Moscow City.

What can you see and do at Moscow City?

Where Moscow’s cityscape was once dominated by Stalin’s Seven Sisters skyscrapers , this is no more. Moscow City is home to eight of Russia’s ten tallest buildings, six of which exceed 300 metres in height. More buildings are still under construction there today, including the One Tower (which will be Europe’s second-tallest building). Once completed, Moscow City will comprise more than 20 innovative structures.

Each of Moscow City’s skyscrapers was designed by its own architect, lending the cluster of skyscrapers a unique appearance. Aside from being a site of architectural wonder, Moscow City is a place for leisure and entertainment with over 100 cafes and restaurants, exhibition spaces, cinemas, viewing platforms, and more.

Federation Tower

  • East Tower: 374m, 97 floors; West Tower: 243m, 63 floors
  • Completed in 2017
  • Architects: Sergey Tchoban and Peter Schweger

The East Federation Tower is the tallest building in Moscow, and the second-tallest building in Europe after the Lakhta Centre in St Petersburg. Visitors can enjoy a luxurious meal of seafood, truffles or steak at restaurant ‘Sixty’ on the 62nd floor of the West Tower, or visit Europe’s highest observation deck, ‘Panorama 360’, on the 89th floor of the East Tower.

Did you know? The ice cream and chocolate shop on the 360 observation deck are the highest in the world!

  • South Tower: 354m, 85 floors; North Tower: 254m, 49 floors
  • Completed in 2015
  • Architect: Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP

The South OKO Tower is the third-tallest building in Russia and Europe. Here, you can visit ‘Ruski’ to dine on hearty Russian cuisine cooked on a real Russian stove, and have a drink in the ice bar. Alternatively, visit restaurant, nightclub and performance space ‘Birds’; the restaurant is the highest in Europe, situated on the 86th floor roof terrace alongside an observation deck. The OKO Towers are also home to karaoke club ‘City Voice’.

Did you know? Underneath OKO Towers is the largest underground parking in Europe, with 16 levels and 3,400 parking spaces.

Mercury Tower

  • 339m tall, 75 floors
  • Architects : Mikhail Posokhin, Frank Williams, Gennady Sirota

Another multifunctional skyscraper, which was designed as the first truly ‘green’ building in Moscow. The Mercury Tower has a distinct geometric shape and copper-coloured glazing, and was the tallest building in Europe upon completion. Visit ‘More i myaso’ (Sea and meat) on the first floor of the tower to enjoy European and Mediterranean cuisine whilst surrounded by greenery. On the 2nd and 40th floors a modern art gallery, the ‘ILONA-K artspace’, has just opened.

City of Capitals

  • Moscow Tower: 302m, 76 floors; St Petersburg Tower: 257m, 65 floors
  • Completed in 2009
  • Architect: Bureau NBBJ

The unique geometric design of the City of Capitals towers resembles stacks of rotating blocks, and is rooted in Constructivism of the early Soviet period (many Soviet Constructivist buildings can be found in Moscow). Visitors to the Moscow Tower can enjoy a range of cuisines – traditional Italian dishes on the summer terrace of ‘Tutto Bene’, Panasian cuisine in the tropical luxury of the ‘Bamboo Bar’ on the 1st floor’, and poke or smoothie bowls at ‘Soul in the Bowl’ cafe on the 80th floor.

Tower on the Embankment

  • Tower A: 84m; Tower B:127m; Tower C: 268m, 61 floors
  • Completed in 2007
  • Architects: Vehbi Inan and Olcay Erturk

After completion, the Tower on the Embankment was the tallest building in Europe, and is now the 13th tallest. It houses the headquarters of several large Russian and international  companies, including IBM and KPMG. There are two cafes located on the 1st floor of Tower C – self-service café ‘Obed Bufet’ (Lunch Buffet) and Bakery Chain ‘Khleb Nasushchny’ (Daily Bread).

Evolution Tower

  • 255m tall, 54 floors
  • Architects: Philip Nikandrov and RMJM Scotland Ltd

Evolution is Moscow City’s most recognisable tower, and the 11th tallest building in Russia. Its façade is a true architectural marvel, comprising continuous strips of curved glazing spiralling high into  the sky. According to the architect, Philip Nikandrov, the spiral shape of the tower honours centuries of architectural design in Russia, from the onion domes of St Basil's Cathedral to Vladimir Shukhov’s Tatlin Tower, a masterpiece of Constructivist design. Outside the Evolution tower is a landscaped terrace and pedestrian zone descending to the Presnenskaya Embankment, which was also designed by Nikandrov.

Did you know? Moscow’s largest wedding palace was supposed to be built on the site of the Evolution tower, though the project was abandoned.

  • 239m tall, 60 floors
  • Completed in 2011

Imperia’s interesting design has a curved roof and an arched glass façade. Inside the tower are various cafes including ‘City Friends’ for all-day breakfasts and light lunches, ‘Mama in the City’ for simple meals of Russian cuisine, and ‘abc kitchen’ for European and Indian-inspired dishes. Alternatively, visit ‘High Bar’ on the 56th floor for cocktails with a view. In Imperia you’ll also find the Museum of High-Rise Construction in Moscow (suitably located on the 56th floor), and the Camera Immersive Theatre.

Did you know? Inside Vystavochnaya metro station is the Metro Museum , dedicated to the history of the beautiful Moscow Metro!

  • 130m tall, 26 floors
  • Completed in 2001
  • Architect: Boris Tkhor

Tower 2000 was Moscow City’s first tower. It stands on the opposite bank of the Moskva River, and houses a viewing platform from which visitors can admire an unparalleled panorama of Moscow City. The Bagration Bridge reaches across the river from the tower to Moscow City, and underneath are piers from where you can take boat trips.
