best bus tour munich

We’ll also give you a description of the stops included on each route below.

The red route covers Munich’s inner-city area, with views of sites such as Marienplatz, the Opera, Stachus, and Haidhausen.

There are 8 stops on this route including the following:

  • Hauptbahnhof
  • Odeonsplatz
  • Marienplatz
  • Deutsches Museum

The blue route will take you to the neighbourhood of Schwabing, which was once the home of many famous German artists.

This is also where you’ll find the English Garden, one of the largest public parks in Europe.

The following 6 stops are included on this route:

  • English Garden
  • Leopoldstraße
  • Pinakkotheken

Purple Line

The purple route takes you a bit further outside of the city centre to sites like the Nymphenburg Palace and Olympiapark.

You’ll also be able to see attractions in Germany like the Schloss Nymphenburg Gardens, the Neuhausen Beer Garden, and more.

Here are the 4 stops on this route:

  • Nymphenburg
  • Olympiapark

Each route takes around 60 minutes to complete, and Big Bus typically offers service every 30 minutes.

The blue route only has service every hour on weekends and every 2 hours on weekdays.

Their bus service is available from 10 am - 6 pm.

City Sightseeing

Like Big Bus Tours, this company also offers hop-on hop-off express tour all over the world in their double-deckers.

Their services are very similar, including using the same routes, ticket types, and the pre-recorded commentary in 8 languages.

One of the main differences between City Sightseeing and other companies is that they offer family grand tour at a discounted rate.

Some ticket options also include a free espresso! Their cancellation policy is like other bus tour companies.

  • Red Line (City Tour) only
  • Single Itinerary around the city (not 24 hrs)
  • €22.50/Adults | €14.50/Children (5-15)

All Tours - 24 Hours

City Sightseeing uses the exact same routes as their competitors, and they offer service about as frequently as well.

Learn more about these routes above .

While this company’s hop-on hop-off bus tour is also similar to those offered by their competitors, there are a few differences to note.

For the most part, they offer stops at the same locations as Big Bus, but there are a few differences we will note below in the routes section.

If you’re not a fan of pre-recorded commentary, Gray Line offers live commentary in German.

While this won’t be useful for anyone who doesn’t understand the language, it’s definitely worth noting for those who are fluent and prefer to have a tour guide provide details.

Their pre-recorded commentary is offered in English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Russian, Chinese, and Japanese.

Express Ticket

  • Express Circle Tour (7 stops)

24-Hour Ticket

  • Grand Circle Tour (12 stops)
  • €29/Adults | €16/Children (4-14)
  • €59/Family (2 Adults, 2 Children)

48-Hour Ticket

  • €35/Adults | €19/Children (5-15)

Unlike its competitors, this company has consolidated its service down to just two routes.

Despite this fact, they still manage to make stops at all the major locations included with every other hop-on hop-off bus service in Munich.

Express Circle Tour

This is essentially like the Red Line route from Big Bus, but with a few differences.

Here are the 7 stops included with their Express Circle Tour:

  • Max-Joseph-Platz
  • Karlsplatz - Stachus

Grand Circle Tour

This route includes all the stops on their Express Circle Tour with a few more stops at popular locations such as Olympia Park and Nymphenburg Palace.

Here are the additional stops included with the Grand Circle Tour:

  • Olympia Park

The Express Circle Tour takes approximately 1 hour to complete, while the Grand Circle Tour is 2.5 hours in length.

Their operating hours are 9:40 am - 4 pm in the summer and 10 am - 3 pm in the winter.

Gray Line offers service every 60 minutes.

There are a lot of notable and popular attractions within a few hours of Munich, so you might want to consider a trip.

One of the most popular destinations is Neuschwanstein Castle , and we have an entire post dedicated to visiting this historic site.

In addition to these options, there are several other day trips from Munich you might enjoy.

Pros and Cons

If you’re interested in visiting all of the major attractions in Munich, a hop-on hop-off bus tour can be an excellent way to get around and learn about important historic locations.

While a lot of people will find this type of service very helpful, there are a few things to consider before purchasing tickets.

Here are just a few reasons you might find a Munich hop-on hop-off bus tour very useful and valuable.

Hop On and Off at Your Own Pace

One of the best things about this type of service is that you can jump off and explore the city at your own pace.

When you’re done spending time at one stop, you can jump back on the bus and continue your tour.

Excellent Overview of Munich

The ability to hop on and off at your own discretion also makes hop-on hop-off bus tours a great way to get around the city if you’re looking for transportation, because they make stops at all the major sites in the city.

Live and Recorded Commentary

Hop-on hop-off bus tours always include pre-recorded commentary in multiple languages, allowing you to learn about the city as you travel from one stop to the next.

While most of these bus tours no longer offer live commentary, there is at least one company offering this service in Munich.

Even though this service is very useful for a majority of travelers and tourists, there are certain reasons that these bus tours might not be the best option for everyone.

No Assigned Seat

While most fully guided bus tours will give you an assigned seat so that you’ll always have somewhere to sit, hop-on hop-off bus tours do not offer this service.

Instead, all their seats are first-come, first-served, which means there might only be standing room when you hop on the bus.

Not Great Commentary

Although most people will find the pre-recorded commentary helpful, it’s not exactly the deepest or insightful information you’ll ever hear.

If you’d like to learn more about this city, a Munich walking tour will probably provide a lot more interesting details.

Inefficient Travel

If you are planning to use this type of service to get around the city, it should be noted that even the fastest companies only offer stops every 30 or so minutes.

This means you could be waiting at one of their stops for quite some time.

Anyone who has limited time in Munich might want to consider public transportation, taxis, Uber, and other alternatives to get around the city a lot faster.

And much, much more

Croatian & Eastern Delights

I enjoyed the tour, good company, even the long days, Kevin our guide was great nothing was to much trouble for him, but he had his work cut out, what with one thing then another, food being served late, or not enough, rooms not ready, he had the patience of a saint, more information regarding what was there, as we all have different interests, mine is history so if there is a castle to see I would like to be able to see that, so if there is a funicular railway there I would have liked to have known, so I can make an informed choice to go or not as I know my capabilities. In that time frame we was given. One of our day guides in Prague wasn't up to much, for the price of a ticket to the castle which was ten Euros I would sooner gone in there than stop with him we had ten minutes or more toilet stop and we finished 30 minutes early, so to me and some others it was a waste of our valuable time

Eastern Highlights

We had an excellent time on our Expat Eastern European tour. Dorota our team leader was exceptional, with excellent knowledge of every city and country that we visited. Joseph our driver was brilliant too. The whole trip was well organised and managed, we could have maybe had an extra day in Vienna but other than that no complaints. We also enjoyed the company of the other travellers on the tour. Thanks everyone for making the trip so enjoyable and memorable.

Imperial Highlights (10 Days)

Me and my family took this tour with a wonderful tour director call Kate from Poland. The fellow passengers were of mixed nationalities and age from Australia, India, Singapore, Philippines, USA etc. It was a great value for money trip with lot of added hidden treasures included on the way which came as a very pleasant surprise for all of us. On our own I doubt if any one of us would have managed to see those places. The hotels were decent with relatively good food. Kate made sure that we had ample vegetarian food us as per our choice. The whole trip was never hectic with plenty of time for ourselves to spend with family. All the local specialist guides had good sense of humor and didn't make us feel like we were in a History Class. Over all a great trip and highly recommended to take with family or friends.

This is a tour I would recommend without hesitation. The itinerary was thrilling! The only note I'd like to make is that the night in the Tuscan Hills (as it was described online) is not in the hills but rather a city, and the traditional Tuscan meal was instead chicken with French fries. Every other aspects of this tour was as described and beyond - it's hard to put in words how spectacular this trip is!

DAY 4 Alp Mountains or Dachau Memorial Site/ Munich

Today you have a choice of what you prefer to do: Option 1 is a rail tour into the Alp Mountains . Option 2  is a visit of the  KZ Dachau Memorial Site  (please see the information below). Option 3 is to stay in Munich for another day of sightseeing there.

If you choose Option 1 you will do a rail tour into the Alp Mountains  (which are located south of Munich) you will travel to  Garmisch-Partenkirchen . By direct regional rail it takes about 75 minutes to Garmisch-Partenkirchen – the alpine   mountain resort  is located close to the border to Austria and in midst a beautiful mountain scenery on the foot of Germany´s highest mountain – the “ Zugspitze ” (2971m, 9714ft.).

You can do some sightseeing in town or – if the weather is nice – visit the  Zugspitze  (ticket from Garmisch-Partenkirchen can be purchased right at the rail station). Another option is to take a beautiful hike into the neighboring mountains  Kreutzeck (5,417 ft.) and Osterfeldkopf.  Here you can walk on the AlpspiX (which is free of charge): two steel beams form a floating X over a vertical drop of more than 3,000 ft.. You have great views of the “ Höllental ” below and also of the (mostly) snow covered Zugspitze which is just across from the Osterfeldkopf. For details about this day trip please also see Thomas’s Blog:   Alp Mountains (Zugspitz area) – Daytrip by Rail from Munich .

If the weather is not so nice you may want to stay in town and visit some of the sights in the Old Town or close by. In 1936 the Winter Olympic Games took place in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and each year a variety of Nordic and alpine World Ski races are held here. The Olympic Ski Stadium was built by the Nazi Regime. It is just outside of town but you can also take a public bus to the stadium ( fare is covered by the ticket you are holding). Just a couple of walking minutes from the Olympic Ski Jump you will find the  Partnach Gorge , definitely worth a visit. The gorgeous gorge has been formed by the Partnach, a mountain stream – you may want to take a light rain jacket when going in there!

If you choose Option 2  you will visit the  KZ Dachau Memorial Site which was the first Concentration Camp of Nazi Germany, soon erected after Hitler came into power in 1933. Rail to Dachau and the bus to the Memorial Site is included in the price of the tour, admission to the Memorial Site is free . At the site you may join an English-speaking tour organized by volunteers working for the memorial site or get an audio guide which is available in English. The 22-minute documentary “ The Dachau Concentration Camp ” is shown in English several times a day (free of charge). Including the travel time from/to Munich Central Station you need about 4-5 hours for a visit. For more detailed information you may also want to look at our Blog “ Dachau memorial site – daytrip by rail from Munich ”.

Travel time is about 4.5 hours and along this rail journey you will travel from Bavaria, located all the way in the south of Germany, to the north east, where Germany´s Capital City is located. The direct train will run along a new high-speed route which was completed in December 2017. This route runs by Nuremberg , Bamberg , Erfurt , Leipzig and Lutherstadt Wittenberg . All of those towns are worth a visit and if you are interested to spend a day or two in one of those beautiful cities please let us know and we will be happy to extend this tour for you.

Your hotel is in walking distance from the station . Drop off your baggage at your hotel and you are ready to go! Germany´s capital city is a great and dynamic metropolis. The fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and the reunification of East and West Germany  in 1990 changed the city in many ways. Berlin fascinates visitors it’s culture and history are unique. Your tour includes the 96   hour Berlin and Potsdam Welcome Card . With this card you will have discounts to 200 museums, city tours and attractions and it includes a pass for unlimited free use of the Berlin public transportation system .

Day 6 Berlin

You may want to start this day by joining a free English-speaking 2.5 hours walking tour of Berlin (information on how to reserve this tour will be provided) There are plenty of opportunities to take advantage of your Berlin and Potsdam Welcome Card  today. With your tour package you will receive Berlin Walking tour suggestions as well as information about the public buses “ M100 ” and “ M200 ”: the buses are public double decker buses which cover many sights of Berlin and are a perfect way to explore the city by hopping on and off those buses. They run very frequently all day from 5am until midnight and if you take both routes you will have a circle taking you from the Center of former East Berlin (“Berlin Alexanderplatz”) to the Center of former West Berlin (“Bahnhof Zoo”, “Ku´damm” shopping area ). Bus M200 takes you south of the “ Tiergarten ” to West Berlin´s Bahnhof Zoo where you may want to visit the “ Gedachtniskirche ” (Memorial Church) as well as the KaDeWe , continental Europe´s largest compartment store, which is located close to the Ku´damm. Bus M100 takes you back through the Tiergarten and partly north of it, passing the “ Siegessaule ” (Victory Column), Bellevue Palace (built in 1786 for the younger brother of Friedrich II, Ferdinand of Prussia, today: seat of the Germany´s President), the Reichstag (German Parliament), the Brandenburg Gate and the Museum Island back to Berlin Alexanderplatz.

Day 7 Potsdam or  Memorial Sachsenhausen/ Berlin

Today you have a another choice of what you prefer to do: Option 1 is a rail tour into  Potsdam   (which is located about 25 minutes west of Berlin. Option 2  is a rail tour into Oranienburg  (which is located about 30 minutes north of Berlin) for a visit of the  Memorial and Museum Sachsenhausen  (please see the information below).  Option 3 is to stay in Berlin  for another day of sightseeing there.

If you are interested in beautiful Palaces and Gardens you may want to choose Option 1 for a visit of Potsdam , Capital of the State of Brandenburg . The city was built by the  Prussian Kings within a lake area and with its many cultural landmarks, in particular the Palaces of Sanssouci located in midst beautiful parks . Rail to Potsdam and back to Berlin (as well as public transportation by tram and buses within the city of Potsdam) are covered by your Berlin and Potsdam Welcome Card .

If you are interested in the infamous history during WWII you may want to choose Option 2  for a visit of the  Memorial and Museum Sachsenhausen . The memorial site is located in the city of Oranienburg – just outside of Berlin. The Concentration Camp (“KZ”) in Oranienburg-Sachsenhausen was built as the role-model for many Concentration Camps in Germany and Central Europe. You will need about half a day for the trip to the Memorial Site (see Day 7 of our History Rail Tour “ Fascination and Terror –Rise and Fall of the Third Reich ” for more detailed information). Admission to Sachsenhausen is free and public transportation by rail/bus is covered by your Berlin and Potsdam Welcome Card.

When you are back in Berlin : a nice way to see Berlin is by foot. Your tour package includes a suggestion for a free English-speaking walking tour of Berlin as well as walking suggestions for the area around the Brandenburg Gate , in case you would like to discover the city on your own. From the Brandenburg Gate and the Reichstag (German Parliament) the walking tour passes by the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe , to Berlin´s new city center, the “ Potsdamer Platz ”, to “ Checkpoint Charlie ”, to East Berlin´s Culture- and Shopping Street “Friedrichstrasse” (site of the “golden twenties”), to the “Gendarmenmarkt”, where the German and French Cathedrals are located, via the promenade street “Unter den Linden ” to the Museum Island .

The remains of the wall can be visited at Berlin´s East Side Gallery where parts of the wall have been turned into a piece of art. If you are interested in Third Reich history a “must visit” is the documentation center “ Topography of Terror “. It is located at the site from where the Nazis planned and managed most of their crimes.

We went on a trip to Germany from 31 Dec 22 for 12 days. Based on the “8-DAY CITY DUO MUNICH, BERLIN” tour package, Thomas had provided very good recommendations and helped to further customise the itinerary to meet our needs and interest. We had touched down in Munich on NYE to experience the year end celebrations. We then took the ICE train to Berlin the following day and started the tour from Berlin. Thomas had included Dresden, Nuremburg, Rothenburg ob der Tauber as part of our travel itinerary before we returned to Munich again to complete the tour. The trip was very well planned and organised. The tickets, vouchers, city and places of interest information, hotel and transportation arrangements were sent to us 1-2 weeks before our trip began. During the trip, when we sought advice via email from Thomas and team with regard to the trip and places to visit, they had been very helpful and prompt in replying to us. We had a wonderful time and we would recommend To-Europe.com services to our friends. A big thank you to Thomas, Woldemar and Marie! Regards, Florence & family, Singapore
