Bali Tours & Vacations

Tourists with their guide at a temple in Bali

There are 17,000 islands in the Indonesian archipelago, but none shine brighter than Bali.

See the green slopes of Mt Batur to the Bintang bodegas on Seminyak’s main party strip. Bali is a volcano-dotted, beach-fringed paradise that’s serene and sensational by turns. Beyond the mega-resorts and yoga studios, you'll find the essence of Bali, the temples, out-of-the-way mountain towns, local markets and lazy fishing villages. Our Bali tours have something for everyone. Dive the impossibly blue waters off Lovina. Be welcomed into a Balinese family home. Soak in the Banja hot springs or sip smoothies in Ubud’s cafes . As always, when it comes to paradise, the hardest bit is choosing what to do first.

Learn more about Bali

Local culture.

Between the 12th and 20th centuries, Bali has often been treated as a pawn in the games of kings, rajahs and generals. More often than not, its fate has been closely tied to neighboring Lombok with fierce battles between the two islands over the centuries as different rulers vied for regional dominance. This history of varied occupation can be seen in Bali today, with elements of Hinduism and Islam present in modern Balinese society. However, there is no historical animosity between the religions, or even between the islands of Lombok and Bali.

One of the defining moments in Bali’s history took place in the 16th century when the collapse of the Majapahit dynasty encouraged the spread of Islam from the surrounding states into the Javanese kingdom. Rather than live under Islamic rule, many Hindu elites chose to escape to Bali. These elites included many artists, dancers, musicians, actors and court-supported artisans, as well as some more artistically inclined priests. The result was an intense proliferation of cultural arts across Bali, no doubt inspired by rich Balinese folklore featuring epic battles of good and evil, gods and mortals. This reputation persists today, with many travelers falling in love with the island’s intricate temple carvings, dance performances, colorful sarongs and handicrafts.

When you combine a love of arts with world-class beaches and deliciously fiery sambals, it’s no surprise Bali’s tourism industry is soaring. It’s not unusual for someone to ask you whether this is your second, third or fourth visit to the island. Many locals rely on tourism to some extent, either by working as tour operators or running hotels, yoga studios, massage parlors, bars, cafes or restaurants.

The destination’s popularity with  Australians  means there’s a gradual cultural creep in larger cities like Seminyak, where Melbourne-style cafes and international clothing labels are particularly popular. If you escape the resorts and head further north from Denpasar, you’re more likely to encounter traditional warungs (eateries) and villages untouched by tourism sprawl.

One last word of advice: always watch where you put your feet. Locals will traditionally place small offerings on the footpaths outside their homes or businesses up to three times a day. 83.5% of the population identifies as Hindu and religion plays a large part in Balinese life. In fact, there is a small religious ceremony associated with just about every aspect of Balinese culture, whether it’s the beginning of a soccer game, celebrating the full moon or cleaning the house.

Food and drink

At first glance it might seem difficult to pinpoint Bali’s exact culinary identity. The mishmash of Indonesian and pan-Asian influences means you’re likely to come across menus that sometimes feel part Thai, Malaysian, Indian and Vietnamese. But no matter what you order, the food will always be fresh and bursting with flavor. Dishes are typically made fresh each day, with curries and pastes prepared by hand using traditional methods.

The most authentic food in Bali is usually found streetside at eateries called warungs. Warungs are common in every village and city, and a good place for a quick feed on a budget. Many will specialize in a small menu of popular local dishes.

Top foods to try in Bali

Babi guling:  This is slow cooking Balinese-style. A whole pig is stuffed with chilli, turmeric, ginger, galangal, shallots, garlic, coriander seeds and aromatic leaves and rotated over an open fire. This dish is commonly seen at celebrations.

Satay:  Sometimes spelt ‘sate’ on local menus, Indonesia is famous for its tasty meat skewers (usually chicken) cooked over hot coals and slathered in moreish peanut sauce.

Nasi campur:  Nasi campur feels like a bit of a buffet. Your plate typically comes with a scoop of nasi putih accompanied by small portions of a number of other dishes, including meats, vegetables, peanuts, eggs, and fried-shrimp krupuk.

Nasi goreng:  The old favorite among tertiary students is nothing like the local version. Nasi goreng, literally meaning "fried rice”, is a popular rice dish with pieces of meat and vegetables, and a fried egg added on top.

Sambal:  A fiery paste made using a chili base smashed with secondary ingredients like shrimp paste, fish sauce, garlic, ginger, shallot, scallion, palm sugar, lime juice, and rice vinegar.

Eating vegetarian in Bali

Going vegetarian is relatively easy in Bali as many dishes are already meat-free. Tofu and tempeh are also a standard part of the local diet. Key vegetarian dishes to look out for include nasi saur (rice flavored with toasted coconut and accompanied by tofu, tempeh, vegetables and sometimes egg), urap (steamed vegetables mixed with grated coconut and spices), gado gado (tofu and tempeh mixed with steamed vegetables, boiled egg and peanut sauce) and sayur hijau (leafy green vegetables, usually kangkung – water spinach – flavored with a tomato-chilli sauce).

The abundance of fresh fruits in Bali means you can buy fresh coconuts and juices (or fruity cocktails) almost anywhere you go. If you're looking for something with a bit more punch then you could order a Bintang, the national larger or maybe arak – a local liquor made from fermented rice and coconut palm flowers.

Festivals and events

Many festivals in the Balinese calendar revolve around religious and spiritual occasions marked by periods of prayer or silence, and followed by lots of festivities and feasting. Some festivals might be inconvenient for travelers, such as the Day of Silence, but they’re also a great opportunity to gain an insight into local life that many don’t get to see.

Multiple surf contests are held throughout the year at different times and in different places. Check with local surfing schools for up to date information.

Top festivals in Bali

Nyepi (Day of Silence):  Bali’s major Hindu festival, Nyepi, or the Day of Silence, celebrates the beginning of a new year and is marked by inactivity. Legends say that this is a strategy to convince evil spirits that Bali is uninhabited and therefore not worthy of visiting! Jokes on them. The day involves prayer, meditation and quiet reflection.

Bali Arts Festival:  For an island with a strong history of cultural arts, it’s no surprise the Bali Arts Festival has pride of place in the annual calendar. Based at the Taman Wedhi Budaya arts center in Denpasar, travelers can see village-based dance groups competing for local pride across several traditional dance categories. The date changes each year but is typically held between mid-June to mid-July.

Bali Kite Festival:  From July to October, the skies of southern Bali fill with huge, colorful monsters, critters and imaginative creations. Scores of kites are launched by the locals as part of this special spiritual event. It is believed the kites urge the gods to provide abundant harvests.

Indonesian Independence Day:  Held on 17 August each year, this day celebrates Indonesia's independence from the Dutch in 1945. Expect to see legions of marching school children, flags, kites and fireworks. Don’t expect to get anywhere quickly either on the day or the days leading up to it.

Galungan and Kuningan:  Galungan celebrates the death of a legendary tyrant called Mayadenawa. The celebrations come to a head with the Kuningan festival, which is when the Balinese say thanks and goodbye to the gods. The exact dates of these two festivals vary as they are planned using the 210-day wuku (or Pawukon) calendar.

Geography and environment

Bali is undoubtedly Indonesia’s most popular province thanks to its abundance of beautiful beaches, leafy jungles and impressive mountains. Located just east of Java and west of Lombok, the Bali province includes not only the island of Bali but also a few of the smaller neighboring islands, such as Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan, and Nusa Ceningan.

Bali's highest mountain is Mt Agung (3,031 m, 9,944 ft), which is also known as the "Mother Mountain”. One of the other popular volcanoes on the island is Mt Batur. Both of these volcanoes have contributed to Bali’s incredibly fertile soil, which has allowed the rice crop trade to flourish.

Bali is located just 8 degrees south of the equator, which means it enjoys a fairly even climate year-round. The average year-round temperature hovers around 86°F, with a humidity level of about 85%. It's also surrounded by coral reefs and is part of the Coral Triangle, an area with the highest biodiversity of marine species. Over 500 reef-building coral species can be found here, which is seven times the entire Caribbean.

Bali’s problems with environmental pollution are well-documented, and it’s fair to say that the nearly 5.7 million tourists who visit annually are contributing their fair share. In late 2017, Indonesian officials declared a “garbage emergency” after a tide of plastic washed up a 5.8 kilometer (3.6 mile) stretch of coastline. We encourage all travelers to carry a reusable plastic bottle with them, a reusable tote bag for carrying items and to try and minimize their use of plastics wherever possible.

While you’ll find many of the main tourism hubs, like Seminyak and Kuta, filled with international fashion labels, there are also many local boutiques offering a wide variety of hand-made goods. These include traditional wood carvings (and even some famously phallic bottle openers), silver jewelry, colorful sarongs, eco-friendly bags, bamboo satchels, recycled furniture and a near limitless range of body oils and fragrances. Of course, if you’re looking for a traditional ‘I Heart Bali’ t-shirt or Bintang singlet, these are never in short supply either.

Like many parts of South East Asia, bargaining is a big part of the local shopping experience. Getting a good price comes down to how well you can haggle, but it’s important to have fun, bargain in good faith, and remember to smile. You’ll usually find better prices, and more negotiable shop owners, away from the main tourist strips.

When is the best time to visit Bali?

Sitting a snug 8 degrees from the equator, Bali’s climate is classic tropics. There’s a dry season and a rainy season, and not a whole lot in between.

The best time for a Bali tour (weather-wise) is the July to August peak season, or from December to the first week of January.

Although if you’d like to avoid the crowds (and why wouldn’t you) shoulder months like April, May, June and September make an excellent alternative.

The weather is dry and slightly less humid, and the island in general is a lot more relaxed.

October isn’t too bad either, especially if you’re into water sports like scuba diving, surfing or snorkeling (the rainfall is much lighter than in November).

Do you need a visa for a Bali tour?

The short answer is maybe – depending on your nationality. Passport holders from over 60 countries (including the   UK ,   Australia   and the   United States ) can enter Indonesia with a free tourist visa on arrival which allows you to stay for 30 days for tourism purposes. An immigration officer will date stamp your passport when you arrive and you will not be able to extend your stay. If you overstay there are hefty fines of IDR 1,000,000 (approximately 70 USD) per day.

If there's a chance you might want to stay longer than 30 days, you'll need to pay for a visa on arrival or apply for one prior to traveling at an overseas Indonesian consulate or embassy.

To enter Bali, you’ll need to meet the following requirements:

  • proof of onward or return ticket
  • proof of funds to pay for your expenses during your trip
  • completed immigration card (this will usually be given to you on the plane or at the arrival terminal)

Local laws require that you must be able to show your valid passport at any time when required to do so by an immigration office. We recommend taking a clear photocopy of your passport photo page, and visa (after arriving), to carry with you.

This page is for general information only and may be subject to change. It is your responsibility to obtain relevant visa and travel information required for entry, departure and travel to each country or region you visit on your trip. You should confirm these with the relevant embassies and/or consulates.

Should I tip on a Bali tour?

Tipping isn’t compulsory in Bali, or anywhere else in Indonesia. But, like most countries, it’s very much appreciated.

Remember that many Balinese rely on tourism as a main source of income, and a tip is always appreciated.

What is the internet access like in Bali?

In tourist centers like Kuta, Seminyak, Denpasar, and Lovina internet access should be fine, and there will be plenty of internet cafes (or cafes with free internet) to choose from if your Wi-Fi isn’t up to scratch.

In more rural areas, there could be little or no coverage, particularly during homestays. Just remember to plan ahead.

What are the toilets like in Bali?

Restaurants and hotels in developed tourist centers will have Western-style flush toilets.

In more rural areas the traditional squat toilet will be more common.

We recommend packing a bottle of hand sanitizer if you plan to visit rural parts of Bali.

What will it cost for a...?

Indonesia is one of the world's favorite budget travel destinations. Here's what you can roughly expect to pay for a:

  • Street food snack = 0.15c USD
  • Fresh juice = 0.40c USD
  • Bottle of beer in a bar = 1.50 USD
  • Souvenir sarong = 1.80 USD
  • Dinner in a restaurant = 3 USD

Can I drink the water on a Bali tour?

Drinking water from taps isn’t recommended in Indonesia, but for environmental reasons try to avoid buying bottled water every day. There are a number of filtered canteens you can purchase or bring a supply of water filtration tablets that you can drop into your bottle wherever you go.

If you’re traveling on an Intrepid Travel trip, we always carry with us a large drum of water in our truck to refill your bottles on the road. Our hotel operators will also provide water free of charge to refill your bottles.

Are credit cards accepted widely in Bali?

Major credit cards are widely accepted by large shops, hotels and restaurants in Bali.

T hey may not be accepted by smaller vendors such as small family restaurants, market stalls or in remote towns and rural areas.

Make sure you carry enough cash for purchases since credit cards aren't always an option everywhere in Bali.

What is ATM access like in Indonesia?

ATMs are found widely throughout Bali, so withdrawing cash shouldn't be problematic in most areas. Some smaller villages and rural areas may not have ATM access, so be prepared for this before venturing too far from a city or major town.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

What public holidays are celebrated in Bali?

Check the current list of public holidays in Indonesia.

Are Intrepid trips accessible for travelers with disabilities?

We are committed to making travel widely  accessible , regardless of ability or disability. We do our best to help you see the world, regardless of physical or mental limitations.

We are always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Is Bali safe for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

Homosexuality is legal in most of Indonesia, however, revisions to Indonesia’s criminal code are currently being considered that would criminalize gay sex and same-sex relationships. Advocacy groups fear this would represent a profound setback to human rights in Indonesia as a result. The LGBTQIA+ community has also been known to be targeted and harassed by police.

Bali, with its Hindu majority, has always been more liberal, tolerant and relaxed in attitude, however, public displays of affection are still not the norm for any couples anywhere in the country. Upscale hotels will likely not have any issues with same-sex travelers sharing a bed, however, if you are staying in budget or family-run businesses and are allocated separate beds, you might feel more comfortable not drawing attention to your relationship.

Because sex, in general, is a taboo subject in Indonesian society, the issue of sexuality is unlikely to arise while traveling here. Indonesia is generally safe for queer travelers, provided you are willing to be discreet and cautious with public behavior.

Thanks a lot !

Hi Colyne, looks like you are planning on seeing some of Bali’s best! Depending on where you’re flying from, you might want to have a few days to unwind from the journey. Amed is worth exploring for a few days, hopping around the different fishing villages and beaches (+ the journey from Munduk to Amed is not short). From Amed, it’s also really easy to get to the Gili Islands by fast boat! Gili Air is really small and doesn’t have any cars, so this is a great option to explore cycling around. From there, you can return to Amed and explore Sidemen after on your way to Canggu/Seminyak. Hope that helps a bit!

Bali - Tour Highlights and Travel Tips

No visit to Bali is complete without visiting its pristine beaches

A trip to Bali is your chance to experience, without any exaggeration, a true paradise on Earth. This enchanting Indonesian Island is not only home to some of the most stunning natural feats in the world, but also a historically rich and intriguing culture that continues to thrive in the face of mass tourism. Expect your holidays in Bali to be a tropical getaway like no other.

Tour Highlights

  • An absolute must-visit for all travelers to Bali, Tanah Lot is a rocky island where you will find an ancient Hindu temple, one of the most significant religious sites on the island. This spot is especially popular for watching spectacular Balinese sunsets — one of the top things to do in Bali .
  • Tucked away on the southern coast of Bali, Nusa Dua is an area geared to visitors who enjoy the finer things in life. Home to several 5-star luxury resorts and gorgeous, golden-sand beaches, Nusa Dua is a hedonist’s dream destination.
  • Bali also boasts some of the most coveted surfing spots in the world. Among the best beaches in Bali for catching the waves are Uluwatu, Padang Padang and Bingin.
  • Bali Sarafi and Marine Park is an open zoo, where you can see over 60 species of wildlife brought in from four continents.

Travel Tips

  • To experience Balinese exciting cuisine like a local, head over to your nearest warung. At these roadside family-run business, you will have a chance to try authentic Bali dishes without hurting your wallet. Check out some of the best and affordable food tours in Bali as well.
  • When visiting temples and other sacred sites, make sure you are dressed modestly.
  • Bali’s climate is characterized by two seasons, wet and dry. The high season takes place in June, July and August, when there’s usually no rain and the weather is sunny. However, if you want to avoid the crowds and get a better deal on accommodation prices, opt instead for May or September, when the weather is still dry and hotels aren’t as packed.

Bali Intro 12 Day

One of the best group trips I went on! Hendri was our tour leader. As he’s Indonesian, he speaks the local language and was able to help with whatever issue with had. In addition, it was nice to be immersed into the culture through his interactions with the locals, without speaking the language ourselves. The trip was well planned and everything was thought of. From early mornings to the late hours of the nightlife, Hendri’s enthusiasm, the awesome group we had, and the beauty of Bali made this trip an unforgettable experience!

Bali One Life Adventures - 12 Days Tour

Bali One Life Adventures - 12 Days

This tour was one of the best vacations I’ve ever taken. I enjoyed the structure with a variety of active things like snorkeling, surfing, hiking, and biking. There was also an adequate amount of downtime for pursuing personal interests apart from the group like shopping and visiting the spas. It was the perfect mix for me. Our guide was also great and really made the trip special. He, along with the countless locals we interacted with, really made us feel welcomed and cared for. It was evident that the one life program has established great rapport with hotel staff, drivers, and various local guides and that part of it played a large part in the overall experience. I’m very grateful for One Life and the Balaniese/Nusa Penida/Gilly Islands communities for welcoming us and making the experience unforgettable. I will certainly be recommending this to my fellow travelers and hope to sign up for another One Life trip in the future.

Good combination of program and freetime. Our CEO, Hans, was just excellent. Actually the highlight of the trip was the visit at his home, walk on the close rice-field and visit the local school. The Agung caused some extra worries but at the end everything went Ok.

Wanderlands Bali - 8 Days Tour

Wanderlands Bali - 8 Days

I had an amazing time. I was initially booked onto the 8 days Bali tour but decided to extend to 13 days whilst on the trip because I was having such a good time. The accommodation was very great and the activities were all amazing. The highlight of the trip was diving in Gili T, I will definitely be back! Bapo, the tour guide was the best tour leader I've had!

It was an incredible experience. Hendri is an amazing tour guide that made it such an amazing time and I'm so grateful for the brilliant job he does. He is such a genuinely kind person and really good at bringing out the best in everyone, making sure everyone is having a fun time. He legit took care of every detail and was so organised so that we could all have the best holiday and not have to worry about anything. It was clear everyone he crossed paths thought really highly of him and he made such an effort to show kindness have positive relationships with all the locals we met along the way. Some of the experiences you do on intro travel are really memories for life - things like meeting the most beautiful family in a local village and exploring the ocean looking for dolphins and sea turtles and exploring rice fields. Highly recommend :)

This tour was phenomenal. The itinerary was great - we got to see a lot and experience Balinese culture without it feeling rushed. Trying to pick the highlight of the trip is hard - the Jatiluwih rice terraces were beautiful, the views of Mt. Batur from our hotel room were fantastic, and the dinners as a group were never short of phenomenal - but our guide, Vera, truly made the experience unforgettable. She went out of our way to add to our trip with extra optional activities, group dinners, and being an amazing photographer. She’s an absolute gem of a person, and an amazing, knowledgeable, and compassionate guide. Thank you G Adventures for a wonderful trip!

  • Best & Worst Times to Visit Bali 2024 (First-Timer Guide)

The best times to visit Bali are May, June, September, and October during its dry season. During these months, there are fewer tourists, allowing you to relish the sunny beaches, clear skies, and pristine islands to the fullest.

With a tropical climate, Bali experiences a consistently warm climate throughout the year. Its daytime temperatures are around 30°C (86°F). There are mainly two seasons there: the dry season ((April to October) and the rainy season (November to March). see below some key facts on Bali weather/climate:

  • Dry season : April to October
  • Rainy season : November to March
  • Hottest month : May
  • High season : May to September

When Are the Best Months to Go to Bali?

Undoubtedly, the best time to visit Bali is April to October for a sun-soaked vacation. During this period, we've thoughtfully singled out the best months for popular activities and travel themes.

  • For a romantic getaway in Bali : the best times to visit Bali are late April to mid-June and late August to early October for fewer peak season crowds.
  • For family trips: the island's best weather time (April to October) lines up perfectly with kids' spring break and summer vacations. To avoid local holidaymakers, you're suggested to take your family trip in April, June, or August.
  • For water fun : If you seek minimal rainfall and calm seas for water fun, you're suggested to travel to Bali between June and September.

Insider tips: As Bali experiences its peak season during these times, you're suggested to make your bookings at least 3 months in advance, particularly for hotels with great views or family rooms.

The Worst Time to Visit Bali

The rainy season (November to March) seems to be the worst time to visit , particularly the rainiest month, January. So for sun seekers with flexible schedules, avoid this period or go to sunbathing island destinations, like Thailand , Vietnam , and the Philippines.

Rainfalls are occurring every 2 or 3 days during these months. The sky may be overcast. It is very humid on the beaches.

However, if your travel date is fixed, traveling in the rainy season still brings benefits: the lowest costs along with the smallest crowds .

Tips to Make "Worst Time" a Better Experience

  •   Consider late March and early November : They are perfect for enjoying a balance of good weather, fewer crowds, and lower costs.
  • Staying on the east coast :  consider places like Nusa Dua and Uluwatu, is helpful to get drier experiences too.
  • Indulge in indoor activities : such as yoga classes, cooking classes, and hands-on experiences in local workshops.
  • Travel with a flexible private Bali tou r ( which we provide ):  You can maximize the sunny intervals and easily adapt to short-lived afternoon downpours with minimal hassle.

Temperature and Rainfall in Bali

Click the sign of each month to check the travel guide information.

Bali in January: Wettest Month, The Most Affordable Month

  • Average temperature range : 24°C to 33°C (75°F to 91°F)
  • Weather : warm/hot, humid, stormy, averaging 27 rainy days, very high rainfall
  • Recommended 2024 festival : Gulungan, Bali's most important Hindu festival celebrates ancestral spirits visiting in a great cultural event every 210 days.

January weather conditions may be the worst of the year, but Bali is still warm/hot, and the rain can even offer respite from the heat when it comes as afternoon downpours.

This is the month for finding the best deals on hotels and flights . You'll find uncrowded temples and plenty of space on the beaches. The exception is January 1st to 6th when there are New Year vacationers.

It is not the time for diving, snorkeling, etc. or island hopping, but if you are content to grab some rays when you can on the beach and bring waterproofs/umbrellas for any time in the jungle or on the rice terraces, you could make Bali in January an enjoyable and economical trip.

Bali in February: Wet, Low Prices

  • Weather : some downpours, humid, averaging 22 rainy days, high rainfall

Though better than January, February is still an off-season month, featuring regular heavy rain, but low prices and low visitor numbers at top sights...

You could enjoy a peaceful holiday in this month , with some dry hours on the beach on most days , if you're prepared to take it easy, dodge the rain, and spend more time indoors.

Avoid diving and other ocean activities due to poor visibility underwater and strong currents . Rough seas mean ferry crossings aren't recommended. Visibility on Mount Batur is often poor and long hikes are not recommended.

Bali in March: Great Deals and Feww Crowds

  • Average temperature range : 24°C to 34°C (75°F to 93°F)
  • Weather : some downpours, humid, averaging 20 rainy days, high rainfall

March is still a wet month in Bali, especially in the first half of the month. It starts to get a little warmer and the showers start to peter out at the end of March.

Enjoy low prices and longer gaps between rain . Diving's still out, and hiking's still not recommended. Taking (morning) opportunities to see the scenery and enjoy the beaches, reserving temple visits and other indoor activities for when the rain comes is advised.

Bali in April: Outdoor Adventures Firmly Back

  • Average temperature range : 25°C to 34°C (77°F to 93°F)
  • Weather : hottest month, but less humid, 9 rainy days, low rainfall

April is the hottest month in Bali . It is not unusual for temperatures to exceed 30°C (95°F) all day, and nights often stay in the high 20s Celsius (the 80s Fahrenheit)!

For beach lovers, hikers, divers… you are almost guaranteed some blue sky days and clear seas , but there will still be some rain on about 1 day in 3.

Bali is busy around Easter , but the rest of the month is a shoulder season time. Staying in a lovely beach resort with air-con in the April shoulder season offers a compromise between economy and the absolute best weather.

Get inspired in Private Bali Tours and make your booking at least three months in advance for affordable price.

Bali in May: Good for Island Hopping

  • Weather : hot/warm, pleasant, averaging 8 rainy days, low rainfall

May offers good conditions for Bali's activities, from island hopping to jungle swinging, with minimal chance of disruption.

In May, the shoulder season continues. It's a little cooler and drier than April, so better weather with similar prices.

Bali in June: Fine Weather

  • Average temperature range : 24°C to 31°C (75°F to 88°F)
  • Weather : warm, clear skies/ocean, averaging 6 rainy days, low rainfall
  • Recommended yearly festival : Bali Arts Festival (always mid-June–mid-July) in Denpasar offers a colorful journey into the world of Bali art.

June has lots of sunshine and balmy temperatures. It does not feel humid. This is an ideal month for all the island's outdoor activities .

June is the end of the shoulder season and the peak tourism season will arrive at the end of June. Be prepared for full hotels and full prices. Booking early is recommended.

Bali in July: Great Island Conditions

  • Average temperature range : 23°C to 31°C (73°F to 88°F)
  • Weather : warm, clear skies/waters, just 4 rainy days, low rainfall
  • Recommended yearly festivals : Bali Arts Festival (always mid-June–mid-July) in Denpasar is a great opportunity to see local costumes, dances, and displays. Bali Kite Festival is also held through July at Sanur Beach, south Bali.

Enjoy great conditions for tropical relaxation and adventure. You could even plan to climb Mount Batur , Bali's iconic volcano with a lake, with only a slim chance of any significant rain. Sunrise treks with high visibility are a highlight of Bali's dry season .

Tourism comes to a peak in July and prices for accommodation reach their highest. It is best to book accommodation early (at least three months in advance) to avoid extra cost or hotels being fully booked.

Check how to plan a trip to Singapore and Bali >>>

Bali in August: Best Month Weatherwise

  • Average temperature range : 23°C to 30°C (73°F to 86°F)
  • Weather : warm, clear skies/waters, just 4 rainy days, very low rainfall
  • Recommended festival : Indonesian Independence Day on August 17 has parades and other outdoor festivities.

August is the peak month for traveling to Bali. Virtually no rain means travel plans can be made with certainty and the best of snorkeling etc. conditions can be enjoyed.

Get your rooms and tours booked early, whether you're looking for a romantic getaway, a tropical family vacation, or a well-earned treat to boost your wellness for the rest of the year.

Read more about Bali Honeymoon Trip Plan: Sample Itinerary, Romantic Experiences >>>

Bali in September: More Balmy Weather

  • Weather : warm, clear skies/waters, 8 rainy days, low rainfall

Tourism starts to drop off a bit after August, and September is considered a shoulder month (mainly as it's the back-to-school month for many nations).

Though there is a little more rain, it's still not significant. If you can visit in September, it should be good conditions for less money.

Bali in October: End of the Dry Season

  • Weather : heat/humidity builds, showers more often, ~12 rainy days, low rainfall

Bali experiences increasing rainfall towards the end of October, making it another month where deals can be had, as hotels try to fill rooms as demand drops.

In general, October is good value for money. It is your last chance to enjoy diving in Bali before the rainy season sets in and the ocean clouds up.

Bali in November: Off Season Starts

  • Weather : hot/humid, a few downpours, averaging 16 rainy days, moderate rainfall

The sea in Bali is noticeably rougher during November, which is not good for water activities , though rainfall doesn't reach high amounts yet, so you might still get a day's hiking in carrying waterproofs.

November is definitely in the off season, but there are still plenty of things that you can do.

Bali in December: Rainy Season in Full Swing

  • Weather : hot/warm, some downpours, averaging 22 rainy days, high rainfall

Although the wet season means some things like diving and mountain hikes are off the cards, you could still dodge the rain for sunny spells on the beach and yoga in the jungle. Enjoy delicious Balinese food indoors and its cultural attractions while you wait for the rain to stop.

Further north in SE Asia, the weather is much better. See The Best Times to Visit Southeast Asia .

Though low season, some tourists still come to Bali, particularly in late December as there are Christmas and southern hemisphere summer holidays, bringing up prices a little.

It was a whirlwind across a number of cities, but a very comprehensive experience across the many sides and cultures of China. Most days had sufficient activities, but weren’t overwhelming, which was great.Across cities, we had excellent tour guides, like Kitty (Beijing), Jenny (Xian), William (Guilin/Yangshuo), Kris (Shanghai), and Tony (Yellow Mountains.)

From the time we landed in Beijing until we left, we were well taken care of. My wife and I had Lily Liu as our guide and she was amazing. From arranging visits to all the different sights, to teaching us the history, it was fantastic.

The tour was excellent. Selinda was very knowledgeable about all the aspects of our tour. Selinda was very interesting and knew so much Chinese history

We made a private tour through South China in January 2024. Altogether Chengdu was the highlight. We had an incredible day at Emeishan. In Chengdu our guidewas Helen. She was the diamond of all. Speaking fluently English, full of interesting stories, laughing and talking all the time. We missed her the rest of our tour. We highly recommend to go to Chengdu for 3 days when visiting China, especially with Helen.

Other highlights are too many to mention but here are a few Ken taking us to the Terracotta Warriors and our food tour in Xian was amazing,

Our day volunteering at the Panda Base was truly unforgettable. Helen, our guide, provided us with invaluable insights about Chengdu and the pandas, enriching our tour with her knowledge and expertise. We're grateful to Helen for accompanying us throughout the day and showcasing the highlights of China.

We had a booking with China Highlights through Silvia Ye who guarenteed a perfect organisation. In Chengdu our guide was Helen. She was the diamond of all. Speaking fluently English, full of interesting stories, laughing and talking all the time. We missed her the rest of our tour. We traveled to China during the Chinese new year and we had Kris as our guide and he is simply knowledgeable, helpful and great.

We visited Guilin for 2 days and stayed in the Guilin Waterfall hotel. Guilin was absolutely beautiful! Our guide, William, was very knowledgeable and kind! He taught us so much about Guilin and the surrounding area! We really enjoyed trying the specialty rice noodles of Guilin. Our highlight was the Li river cruise.

Amazing tour and the guide Mr. 贺霄 was very accommodating with our needs and request as we have bought our 2 years old with us. Well explained for all the place we visited. Any additional cost were informed well ahead and didn't felt any pressure if we opt not to go for additional detour. The trip was relaxing/ laid back/no rushing with zero shopping!

Explore Bali

Where to stay, things to do, where to eat, where to stay in bali.

Some Bali locations are famous for their beaches, others for their luxury, and further still for their arts. When it comes to deciding where to stay in Bali, the truth is you’re spoiled for choice. If it’s a lively atmosphere that appeals, Kuta and Legian offer a vibrant ambiance with easy access to dining, markets, cultural attractions, and shopping. Meanwhile, the high-end enclaves of Seminyak and Nusa Dua are known for their luxury feel, and Ubud boasts a selection of some of the finest relaxation retreats on the island.Choosing where to stay ultimately comes down to what you hope to explore and how you prefer to spend your time.

Read travel guide

Home to some of Bali's most luxurious resorts, Seminyak offers a quieter alternative to its lively neighbours, Legian and Kuta. Many resorts overlook picturesque Seminyak Beach, offering beachfront access, spectacular sunsets, and proximity to the shopping boutiques and high-end restaurants within the immediate vicinity. Seminyak is also within walking distance of Kuta, making it a convenient location for exploring a range of Bali attractions.

Canggu is widely regarded as one of the best areas to stay in Bali due to its emerging popularity as a beachside destination and truly laidback feel. Featuring new beachside resorts, the region is also home to diverse beaches that have sands ranging from black in some areas through to the creamy shorelines so familiar in the island's south.

Legian Beach

Known for its vibrant nightlife, Legian is the second-most popular place to stay within the Bali region. Resorts and accommodation line the beachfront, providing ready access to water sports, shopping, restaurants, and more. If it's the buzz of activity you seek, with excitement at any hour of the day, then Legian is perhaps the destination best suited to meeting your needs.

If you're looking for accommodation positioned in the thick of Bali's action, you can't go past Kuta for its accessibility to shopping, entertainment, and endless dining options. Kuta is a thriving hub of activity day and night. However, amid all the action, there's still quiet refuge to be enjoyed at one of the many beachfront resorts adjacent to the main street.

Of all the places to stay in Bali, Nusa Dua is arguably the most exclusive precinct available. The region was specifically designed as an “all-inclusive” tourism enclave, and it features luxurious and world-renowned resorts with immediate beachfront access. There's also a golf course and a shopping centre. Kuta and Denpasar International Airport are both a quick taxi ride away, making this a convenient location of world-class standard.

Frequently asked questions

Pack your flip-flops (thongs or jandals, depending on where in the world you reside), swimmers, sarong and your appetite for exotic flavours because Bali is calling! Get ready for sandy toes, colourful sunsets and delicious street food adventures in this tropical paradise. In terms of your packing list, keep it simple and leave some room in your suitcase for shopping, but be sure to throw in some hand sanitiser, sunscreen and bug spray.

Bali is a treasure trove of wonders, so it depends on what brings you here in the first place. If you’re after the tourist experience, you’ll find it in the bustling town of Kuta, which is a sensory smorgasbord. Seminyak steps things up a notch in terms of luxury, and if you’re keen for a slightly slower pace and some of Bali’s best beach clubs and restaurants, head to Canggu. From here, you can do a daytrip to see Tanah Lot temple, one of Bali’s unmissable attractions and immerse yourself in the cultural heart of Ubud, where you'll find rice paddies, lush jungle and blissful yoga retreats. For a taste of the good life, it’s hard to go past Nusa Dua for pristine beaches and world-class resorts, and let's not forget about the Instagram-worthy waterfalls of Munduk and the hidden gems of the Gili Islands. Of course, this is just the beginning of Bali’s incredible bounty.

Life happens - we get it! Read more here :

If you want to experience the magic of Bali at its peak (read: lounge on beautiful beaches, dance on the sand, explore lush jungle and dive into crystal-clear water), then plan your visit for the dry season, which runs from May to October. With balmy temps and minimal rainfall, it's the perfect time to experience everything Bali has to offer. If you’re keen to avoid the intense crowds, consider the shoulder seasons from April to June and September to October.

A playground of endless adventures and unforgettable experiences, Bali invites you to switch off from the rat race and dive into crystal-clear water, raise the heart-rate with a thrilling white-water rafting adventure, bliss out at a day spa, dance the night away at a world-famous beach club, visit ancient temples, feast on delectable Indonesian cuisine, barter in bustling markets, chase waterfalls, hike to the top of Mount Batur for sunrise. Bali offers a world of adventure, relaxation, and cultural wonders, the hardest part will be trying to fit it all in one trip!

Bali Holiday Packages

Explore our holiday package deals in bali, frequently asked questions.

There really is something for everyone in Bali. Head to Seminyak for sunset beach clubs and high-end restaurants, stay in Nusa Dua for family friendly luxury resorts and watersports or embrace your adventurous side with a sunrise climb of Mount Batur, Bali’s second-largest volcano. Byron Bay-esque Canggu is perfect for boho beach lovers, whereas Kuta is where it's at for surfing, markets, vibrant nightlife and competitively priced resorts. Can't decide? Choose Legian for a mix of everything or escape to Jimbaran Bay or Uluwatu for an ultra-opulent clifftop stay. Nestled in the pristine Balinese jungle, Ubud features a myriad of 5-star retreats with infinity pools and indulgent spas and is the perfect place to rest and recharge.

A Bali holiday package means your money goes further. 60-minute massages could cost as little as AU$10, while even the finest of dining won’t break the bank.

Boasting a prestigious location on the Nusa Dua beachfront, the exclusive Meliá Bali is one of the most impressive resorts in Bali and features an exceptional collection of luxurious suites and villas across a sweeping landscape of first-class facilities. Deep in the Ubud jungle, Hanging Gardens of Bali features one of the world's most instagrammable pools — an infinity lagoon with sweeping treetop views — while back in the trendy hub of Seminyak, One Eleven's private pool three-bedroom penthouse complete with 24-hour butler service is perfect for a luxury escape with family or friends.

The sheer variety of a Bali holiday package means you’ll need to pack smart: swimmers should sit by summer dresses and smart shirts, while sunscreen and insect repellant is a must. That way, you’ll be ready for every adventure the island paradise throws your way.

Bali cops set to check all tourists over new tourism tax

Bali introduced a new tourism tax over a month ago which sees visitors pay NZ$16.30 to enter the popular holiday destination.

The new levy, which was put in place on February 14, was introduced in the hopes that the money made would be used to assist in protecting Bali’s culture, traditions and local environment.

The system is expected to generate as more than NZ$20 million this year from visitors from New Zealand and Australians alone.

“In the future, the collection of [tourist levy] fees in Bali will protect nature and keep it clean and sustainable,” Indonesian Tourism Minister Sandiaga Uno said.

“But it also plays a vital role in protecting and promoting Balinese culture, which includes customs, traditions, cultural arts and local wisdom to maintain Bali’s spiritual aura.”

He went on to say that the money generated from the new initiative is “expected to improve Bali’s cultural tourism information services and build quality public transportation infrastructure and facilities”.

Tourists visiting Bali should be aware that Tourism Police Units will be conducting checks to ensure visitors have paid the levy.

“Inspections will be carried out starting next week, March 26, 2024, to be precise. We will target tourist attractions in Bali including Uluwatu, Tanah Lot, Ulun Danu Beratan and also Tampaksiring,” Tjok Bagus Pemayun, head of the Bali Tourism Department, told The Bali Sun .

Pemayun revealed that just 40 per cent of all foreigners visiting the island have been paying the tax, which comes to around 5000 people a day since the fee was introduced. This is why the police force is implementing checks.

Officials will check if foreigners are carrying their Tourism Tax Levy Voucher, which is emailed to them from LoveBali following payment.

The voucher shows a QR code that will be inspected by officials, according to The Bali Sun.

If tourists haven’t paid the levy, they will be asked to do so on the spot. No fines have yet been threatened if payment failure occurs.

The tourism officers will be walking around with trained dogs in an attempt to make visitors feel “comfortable and happy”. This has been done in the hopes that the puppies will act as a lighthearted way to start conversations and assist in keeping police interactions more relaxed.

If you’re visiting Bali, you can pay the levy via the lovebali.baliprov.go.id website or Love Bali app.

Bali photo of rubbish on beaches that’s ‘heartbreaking to see’

Tourists were horrified to see paradise looking this way, and were then left speechless when told to stop complaining and do this one thing.

Vow that kept lost mum, son alive for 10 days

A dejected tourist has shared a shocking photograph of Bali beach covered in rubbish on social media.

Posted onto the Bali Travel Forum Facebook group, the traveller shared the moment she was greeted with the site of the popular beach – only to be unable to properly see the sand or water due to the amount of garbage strewn everywhere .

“I’m in Bali now, plastic all over the beach, and in the ocean, in Jimbaran and Uluwatu,” she wrote. “Is there a beach without plastic right now?

“Sad, I ruin my holiday.”

While many commenters were absolutely horrified by the sight of the rubbish along the shore , others urged tourists not to stand idly by simply complaining and not acting to change the situation.

“Pick some up or walk around it,” one commenter wrote.

“The water is still there.”

Another said: “Grab a bag and go pick up some trash, be a good tourist as opposed to posting this. Just saying”.

While a third wrote: “Imagine how different it would be if people picked up just one bag each, instead of complaining about it on Facebook.”

Other words of encouragement included: “Instead of crying in front of a trauma, let’s raise our hands to stop it” and “grab a bucket and help clean it up”.

Others simply voiced their shock and dismay.

“This is what shocked me in Bali! Swimming in a sea of plastic.”

“Wow! Are there clean-up efforts? This is heartbreaking to see.”

“I was in Bali a couple of years ago and some of the beaches I visited looked like this. Very sad and very bad for tourism.”

“It’s so sad to see how us humans treat our beautiful planet.”

Some even said they would reconsider their travel plans.

“I’m planning for next March … this is terrible. I might reconsider after seeing this!”

While others explained the reason why rubbish was arriving on some beaches.

“It’s end of the wet season, all Bali beaches are like this unfortunately … all that rubbish comes in from the rivers etc. during the wet season … will start the clear up soon.”

“Walking the beach yesterday morning there were many people cleaning the beach both paid workers and volunteers. The weather has been very windy and king tides have bought in a lot of rubbish.”

Rubbish is a huge issue in Bali, and Indonesia recorded 68.5 million tonnes of waste in 2021.

During December and March, heavy rain and winds force rubbish down rivers through the regency and then they accumulate on the coastline.

It remains a huge challenge. Picture: Sonny Tumbelaka/AFP

Nearby landfill sites are a big factory to blame for the issue, with some of the region’s largest dumping grounds only 25 minutes away by boat.

“With these heavy monsoon rains it’s inevitable that a lot of that landfill rubbish, including an immense amount of plastics, will be washed into the ocean and will head straight for Bali,” Indonesia Institute founder Ross Taylor said last February.

Indonesia is one of the worst contributors to plastic pollution, with 200,000 tonnes of plastic washing into the ocean, according to a study published by the journal Nature Communications in 2017.
