Tom Cruise's First 10 Movies, Ranked

From Taps to Risky Business, here are the first 10 movies of the beloved, talented Tom Cruise, ranked.

Tom Cruise , like most young actors, began his acting career by gracing the screen with smaller roles in films such as Endless Love , Taps , and more. However, it was his captivating performances in acclaimed works like the comedy Risky Business and the action-packed blockbuster Top Gun that catapulted him into the spotlight of mainstream Hollywood. His remarkable portrayal in Risky Business not only garnered him his initial nomination for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor, but also paved the way for a string of box office successes. Without question, Cruise stands as one of the most influential figures in the realm of the movie industry.

Beyond his good looks and charismatic personality, Cruise is one versatile and talented actor with a track record of over three decades of blockbuster films. There's no denying that his filmography is dominated by high-grossing movies . Among his notable achievements is the immensely successful Mission Impossible franchise, which began in 1996 and will see Cruise reprising his iconic role as Ethan Hunt in the upcoming installments set to release in July 2023. Apart from being talented, Cruise always goes the extreme mile to entertain his audience, solidifying his status as one of the most dedicated actors in Hollywood . Now, let’s take a look at his first films, ranked from worst to best.

10 Endless Love (1981)

Endless Love marked the beginning of Cruise’s filmography. He was only a teenager when he played Billy, who was introduced in the film with Cruise's distinctive running style. While the lead actors Martin Hewitt and Brooke Shields may be familiar to many, Cruise's debut role may go unnoticed by some. Who would have guessed that the unknown actor who portrayed obnoxious Billy would go on to become one of the world's biggest movie stars?

Directed by Franco Zeffirelli, this romantic drama based on the novel of the same name by Scott Spencer. The plot revolves around the intense and obsessive love between two teenagers named David Axelrod and Jade Butterfield. Cruise just had less than one-minute screen time in this thought-provoking exploration of the dark side of teen romance.

9 All the Right Moves (1983)

Set in a small town devoid of much optimism for the future, this football drama presents viewers with an opportunity to witness some of their favorite stars in their early years, including Cruise, Chris Penn, Craig T. Nelson, and Lea Thompson. All the Right Moves perfectly captures the essence of 80s American cinema as it unravels the tale of a young aspiring football player who finds himself trapped in a Pennsylvania steel-mining town. Determined to pursue his dreams, he must strive to secure a football scholarship.

While some fans have dismissed this sports film as dull or clichéd, it still holds nostalgic value for those eager to witness the early performances of Cruise and his co-stars. Though it may not rank among the greatest sports movies ever made, it delivers decent amount of drama and explores poignant themes that touch the viewers' hearts.

8 Losin’ it (1982)

Starring Cruise, Jackie Earle Haley, John Stockwell, Shelley Long, and John P. Navin, this raunchy comedy delves into the themes of sexual awakening, adolescence curiosity and the importance of friendship. Set in 1965, the movie follows a group of four teenage friends who embark on a road trip from California to Tijuana, Mexico, in search of adventure, fun and freedom they believe awaits them there.

With its humorous plot, Losin’ It doesn’t pretend to be anything more than a typical, raunchy teen film akin to the popular movies of the 80s. It’s a fun movie to watch with bunch of friends on a Friday night. However, critics seem to think it is no good at all.

7 Cocktail (1988)

Cocktail stars Cruise, Bryan Brown, and Elizabeth Sue as it tells the story of Brian, a young New York Business school student, who takes up bartending to make ends meet. During his work in this trendy bar, Brian encounters Dough Coughlin and the two form a strong friendship and decide to open their own bar, driven by the desire to make some money.

While some argue that the storyline may be lacking in depth, the film showcases outstanding performances from its cast. Additionally, many view it as a delightful and entertaining 80s film. The film does capture the excitement of nightlife while delving into the personal journeys and relationships of its characters.

6 The Outsiders (1983)

Set in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in the 1960s, this is the film adaptation of the novel of the same name by S.E. Hinton and it is directed by Francis Ford Coppola. The story revolves around the lives of two rival teenage gangs known as the “Greasers” and “the Socs” and the struggles they face in a divided and violent society.

The Outsiders stands as a timeless movie that continues to resonate even in our present society in its depiction of the impact of gangsterism on people and those entangled in its web. Beyond its compelling narrative, the movie features a likable, cast which includes, Rob Lowe, Patrick Swayze, Matt Dillon, Cruise, Emilio Estevez, Diane Lane, Thomas Howell, and others who have gone on to become famous.

5 Taps (1981)

Directed by Harold Becker, Taps is set at the fictional Bunker Hill Military Academy, an elite preparatory school for boys. The plot revolves around a group of students who take drastic measures to defend their school at all costs after the school long-time headmaster announces the impending closure of their beloved institution. Among these determined individuals is Cruise, who plays the role of David, a dedicated Cadet and member of a secret society led by Brian (Timothy Hutton).

Hutton is not alone in delivering the ideal blend of fiery temperament, courage, and gravitas required for his role. Sean Penn and Cruise, as young cadets, also flawlessly embody their characters as hot-headed soldiers. As these misguided youth battle with the conflicting ideas of honor and valor, the film confronts issues of narrow-mindedness and idealism. With its well-written script and outstanding direction, Taps manages to the holds viewers’ attention from start to finish, even during moments that may seem implausible.

4 Legend (1985)

In this mesmerizing fantasy film directed by Ridley Scott , Cruise proves his versatility as an actor by assuming the role of Jack, a determined young man who must stop the nefarious Lord of Darkness. The story revolves around Jack and an intrepid young princess who join forces to safeguard the last unicorn from the clutches of the Lord of Darkness.

Similar to his previous works like Blade Runner and Alien , Scott once again demonstrates his talent for crafting immersive experiences within peculiar and fantastical realms that stem from his visionary imagination. The exceptional performances by Cruise, Mia Sara, and Tim Curry contribute to Legend ’s immersive nature. The stunning cinematography, impressive special effects, and the enchanting presence of creatures like fairies, unicorns, and goblins make this movie appealing to admirers of artistic and visually striking cinema.

3 The Color of Money (1986)

Directed by Martin Scorsese, the sports drama film, The Color of Money , serves as a brilliant sequel to the 1961 classic The Hustler , returning after 25 years to continue the story of Eddie Felson, portrayed by the legendary Paul Newman. The film follows as Eddie Felson takes a young and talented pool player, Vincent Laurie, under his wing to teach him the art of hustling. However, their relationship becomes complicated when Eddie discovers Vincent isn’t patient enough to be tutored.

While Paul Newman shines as the film's star, Cruise delivers a memorable performance that leaves a lasting impact. Although it may not be considered Scorsese's greatest masterpiece, the film showcases his masterful directorial touch evident in the precision and artistry of each shot.

2 Top Gun (1986)

No list of Cruise's greatest movies would be complete without mentioning this captivating tale that originated back in 1986 and was brought to life once again in 2022, after a span of over 30 years. Top Gun: Maverick stands as a remarkable remake that not only lives up to the immense anticipation surrounding its predecessor, but also surpasses it.

In the first film, Top Gun , Cruise plays the hotshot Navy pilot with exceptional flying skills and a rebellious attitude. Directed by Tony Scott the film follows the story of Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, a talented and daring young fighter pilot as he undergoes intense training at the United States Navy's elite Fighter Weapons School. To win the prestigious Top Gun Trophy, he must learn to suppress his wild nature.

1 Risky Business (1983)

Stepping into the shoes of the ambitious high school student in this comedy film, Cruise finally landed his breakout role. Written and directed by Paul Brickman, this teen comedy drama follows Joel as he delves into a world of risky business dealings after just one night of freedom while his parents are away. As he delves deeper into this unconventional, his life takes an unexpected turn, and he must face the consequence of his choices to make things right.

Serving as a commentary on the consequences of greed, Risky Business manages to be more than just another teen sex comedy of the 80s. With its engaging storyline, stellar cast, and memorable music, it has earned its place among the finest movies of the 1980s.

From tiny, acne-ridden, squeaky-voiced acorns, massive oaks of megastardom can grow. Not literally, of course, in Tom Cruise ‘s case (obligatory height reference), but in every figurative way possible, he is an enormous presence in Hollywood, as a producer, as a celebrity and most importantly as a greenlight-giving, budget-busting, bona fide movie star. For better or worse, we’ve few enough left of those. For anyone who grew up watching movies any time in the eighties, nineties or even noughties, Tom Cruise is simply a fact of life: an immovable object; a mathematical constant like Pi, that we’ll never quite get to the end of defining. His movies succeed, his movies fail (all judged on the warped power-of-n matrix of the tentpole), but Tom Cruise TM endures, and will be jumping out of a building on a movie screen near you very soon, if he isn’t doing just that, right now.

But the ubiquity of his brand has its downside. Familiarity can breed contempt, and in between films, the rumor mill that surrounds Cruise — his family life, his Scientology, his dating practices, the fact that there was a guy wheeling a heater along the red carpet behind him at a recent Dublin premiere — gets on our nerves as much as anybody’s. But a funny thing happens: as much as we may be irritated by Cruise’s persona outside his films, between that Cruise/Wagner logo flashing up and the end credits rolling, for maybe just that 120 minutes, he almost always manages to remind us once again just why he’s the biggest star in the world. Almost always.

A little in contrast to our fairly positive review , for this writer’s money, this weekend’s “ Oblivion ” is not the best showcase of Cruise’s tentpole talents (we’re excluding things like his highly atypical but totally brilliant turn in “ Magnolia ” for the purposes of this conversation). Even in poor films like “ Knight and Day ” we’ve found ourselves liking and rooting for the Cruise character because as self-serious and self-absorbed as he may seem to be in real life, Cruise can deliver charm onscreen like no one else. And aside from being a star, he’s actually a good actor , so if he’s given a character who’s a gruff, sarcastic but noble loner (“ Jack Reacher “) or a serious but dedicated master-of-disguise superspy (“ Mission: Impossible “), and a director engaged enough, that’s exactly what you get. But in “Oblivion” he’s given very little character, and what quirks he’s allowed fall rather flat under Kosinski’s direction (it’s not so much that he has a directorial tin ear for these things as he seems simply uninterested — he’s more likely off with the production designer arguing over which white swatch is whiter).

Which is all our long way of saying that, noticing how “Oblivion” didn’t work that Cruise juju on us, we started to think about the films that did, and about where it all started. So to mark the release of this $120 million sci-fi spectacular (that would never have gone ahead were it not for the star’s heft behind it), here’s our rundown of the paltry five films that Tom Cruise, seemingly destined like a rocket for the stars, made when he was a nobody.

“ Endless Love ” (1981) Cruise has one scene in this mindblowingly mawkish, and actually super skeezy teen melodrama from Franco Zeffirelli , and it’s notable for him already being shirtless (and otherwise only wearing sports shorts) and for his speaking, or should we say squeaking, voice. Complete with goofy high-pitched giggle, it is a voice that, while recognizably his, you can literally never imagine delivering “I want the TRUTH!” or “I feel the need…” or “You’ve never seen me very upset,” let alone “Respect the cock. Tame the cunt” for anything but comic effect. Over the course of his next movies, he’s clearly training his voice  never to do this again and he totally retires that snicker, so we’re glad this scene still exists, if only to provide hope for awkward adolescents everywhere. The film, oy vey, stars an unbelievably gorgeous, angel-faced Brooke Shields (her first role after “ Blue Lagoon ” which seriously rewired the prepubescent hormones of an entire generation) and Martin Hewitt (nope, no idea) as a sexually active 15- and 17-year old couple who are just super duper in love. So much so that when nooky is suspended due to parental interference he just can’t take it and resolves to impress his way back into her bed by saving the family home from a fire that he himself has set. This is an idea he gets from a story told by the Tom Cruise character, incidentally. This foolproof plan goes wrong and he goes to prison for arson. When he gets out he is still super duper in love with Shields, but unfortunately kind of a little bit sorta also causes the death of her father and gets sent down again. News was it was going to be remade with Alex Pettyfer and Gabriella Wilde . Yay.

“ Taps ” (1981) The same year as his “ Endless Love ” cameo, Cruise got a much more substantial role, and the first of many, many uniforms, in “ Taps ,” a Harold Becker movie (“ Sea of Love ,” “ Malice “) that’s stood the test of time quite well. It makes a great study of the randomness of nascent stardom too, as Cruise is actually the second or third lead to equally early-days Timothy Hutton and Sean Penn , with Giancarlo Esposito in support. The story is rather ploddingly told, but it’s a compelling tale of young men being taught militaristic ideals without having the wisdom to apply them properly, with tragic consequences. When their Academy is threatened with closure, and their Commanding Officer ( George C Scott ) hospital-bound after a shooting accident brings on a heart attack, the cadets, led by their newly-promoted Cadet Major (Hutton) decide to resist the authorities trying to shut them down, eventually taking up arms. Cruise’s character is the hothead, while Penn’s is the more thoughtful, but the film is really Hutton’s, and watching it, then crawling under a rock for 30 years, you’d be sure that he would be the one with the bigger career right now. But if Hutton is subtle, delivering a very mature portrayal of misplaced honor and thwarted loyalty, Cruise is impressive even if his character is more one-note. And he does get to go briefly berserk at the climax, reminding us of those performances of his later career in which bloodlust or outright insanity lurk just below the surface. It’s a “ Lord of the Flies “-style allegory, so it’s not exactly believable, and it takes too long to get where it’s going, but in “Taps,” we get the first glimpse of the Cruise of the future. And it’s only his second film.

“ The Outsiders ” (1983) If “ Taps ” gave Cruise a taste of what it would be like to be part of a generation of upcoming actors, he hit the motherload by getting cast in Francis Ford Coppola ‘s “ The Outsiders ,” alongside Matt Dillon, C. Thomas Howell, Ralph Macchio, Patrick Swayze, Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez and Diane Lane . Based on S.E. Hinton ‘s novel of the same name, the film is certainly beautiful to look at, and wants to be epic in scope and sweep, but somehow the story doesn’t quite have the grand heft and thematic resonance it really needs. But does it really matter when the cast is this pretty? Again, Cruise takes a less central role than those actors he would soon and forever eclipse in terms of star power, but it is notable from his point of view, because here, despite some spitty, snarly play-acting, greasy hair and snaggly teeth, we discern for the first time Cruise’s heartthrob potential, even in amongst so many heartthrobs. They play a gang of underprivileged kids who are involved in a rivalry with a wealthier gang that spirals out of control when one of the richer kids is killed in a brawl, and as such this also marks a rare time that Cruise would play a true outcast, a reject (as opposed to a principled loner) — future roles may have given him a blue-collar background, but defining Cruise characters are almost always successful in adapting to, and ultimately winning within whatever social circle they aspire to. But while Cruise may be overshadowed in terms of screen time and performance this time out by the likes of Macchio and Howell, especially, according to Lowe, already back then, he was displaying the “traits that would make him famous. He’s zeroed in like a laser.” Lowe also recounts how even this early on, his agent and future production partner Paula Wagner was a hugely important figure in Cruise’s life. Retrospectively it’s tempting to ascribe a good deal of the efficient upward trajectory of his early career to her guiding intelligence — sheer luck and raw talent can’t wholly account for zero-to-hero in just five films, after all.

“ Losin’ It ” (1983) But if with ‘ Outsiders ‘ and “ Taps ” Cruise might have been in danger of being pigeonholed into the “volatile friend” supporting role, his next two films would be in one of the defining genres of the era — the teen sex comedy — and would put paid to any such notions. “ Risky Business ” would of course be his breakout, before “ Top Gun ” three years later would rocket, or fighter jet him to superstardom, but prior to that came “ Losin’ It ,” the justly overlooked “one crazy night”-style story of a bunch of high school kids heading to Tijuana for an evening of debauchery. No prizes for guessing what the “it” is that these boys are hoping to lose. Really, in tracing the evolution of Cruise into the star we know today, “Losin It” is most notable for being the first time he really had the lead role, even if that doesn’t clearly emerge until a little later in the film. So of the three friends who go on the trip, Dave ( Jackie Earle Haley — apparently born looking about 35) is the wildcard motormouth who can’t keep it in his pants, Spider ( John Stockwell ) is the goodlooking jock who gets into fights and tries to bribe policemen while Woody (Cruise) is the sweet, slightly nebbish friend who chickens out of losing his virginity to a prostitute and is instead deflowered in a much more romantic manner by the young housewife ( Shelley Long ) to whom they gave a lift to TJ for a quickie divorce. So it’s a romantic lead of sorts, inasmuch as this sort of film ever provided one of those, but it’s Haley’s wired, twitchy, OTT performance that steals what little there is to take here. A sort of interesting moment happens at the end when Long’s husband reappears, but it’s way too little too late in what is otherwise a tiresome palaver of a film, featuring a neat line in casual racism and a pretty revolting sexist streak that may have been par for the course at the time, but dates the film badly now. The real surprise here is that Curtis Hanson is the director. So it’s not only an early low point for Cruise, then.

“ Risky Business ” (1983) And so we come to the end of our journey, with a little film you may have heard of: “ Risky Business ” — only the third of four films that Cruise would release in 1983 (the last being “ All The Right Moves “). The story of a privileged, Princeton-bound teen who gets into trouble while his parents are away and, with the help of the call girl he falls for ( Rebecca de Mornay ) hits on the wizard scheme of running a one-night brothel to pay off his various debts, on paper it’s not the most promising of star-making vehicles. But Cruise really goes for it, and somewhere around the time he slides into the living room sporting nothing but socks, a pink shirt and a candlestick/microphone, it appears the world woke up to Tom Cruise TM. It helps that the film, though it roughly shares a genre with the same year’s vastly inferior “ Losin’ It ,” is an altogether sharper, tighter, better-written affair (writer/director Paul Brickman seldom gets enough props for that), so that it comes across more as satire than slapstick, spicing it’s caper-ish antics with some fairly pointed commentary. And Cruise is really very good in it, navigating the trickier aspects of his character’s moral ambivalence with ease, and turning in a confident performance that would set up the cocksure but charming persona he would default to time and again in the coming years, most notably with “ Top Gun .” In fact, it’s the first evidence we really have of the central conundrum of Cruise’s star image: in anyone else, that air of smugness — the expectation that the world will give him what he wants because it owes him — would be totally off-putting. But maybe Cruise’s greatest talent is knowing just when to pull back from the brink of all-out arrogance and show us something real, or goofy, or awkward underneath the bravado. It’s those moments, which catch the light like the flaws in a diamond, that stop us from despising his character here and in future incarnations. And that’s maybe as close as we’re going to get to explaining his long-lasting appeal: Cruise can behave like an asshole, he can win the way assholes win, but he gives us just bare-minimum-enough of a glimpse inside to let us believe he’s not, in fact, an asshole. Cue Moms wanting to rescue him; cue teenage girls sighing over the tenderness they spy within; cue teenage boys furiously taking notes. Cue stardom .

The rest is, of course, movie history. Next up, in 2014, Cruise will be jumping out of buildings in 3D in service of yet another sci-fi epic in Doug Liman ‘s “ All You Need Is Kill ,” which sounds kinda like “ Groundhog Day ” with warring aliens ( proper synopsis here ), potentially to be followed by Rupert Sanders ‘ “ Van Helsing ,” and/or Guy Ritchie ‘s “ The Man From UNCLE ” before the probably Christopher McQuarrie -directed “ Mission Impossible 5 “ arrives in 2015. Nope, Cruise ain’t going nowhere. Except maybe out the window of that skyscraper one more time.

Tom Cruise n’a jamais gagné d’Oscar .

Tom Cruise

Highest Rated: 97% Mission: Impossible - Fallout (2018)

Lowest Rated: 9% Cocktail (1988)

Birthday: Jul 3, 1962

Birthplace: Syracuse, New York, USA

Tom Cruise rose quickly to become one of the best-known American actors in the world. Born in Syracuse, New York, he moved around throughout his childhood, including a period in Canada. After graduating from high school in New Jersey, he moved first to New York and then to Los Angeles to pursue acting. He made his film debut in the Brooke Shields vehicle "Endless Love" (1981). His next role as an aggressive military cadet opposite Timothy Hutton and Sean Penn in "Taps" (1981) caught people's attention. He joined another group of young stars, including Patrick Swayze and Rob Lowe, in Francis Ford Coppola's adaptation of the S.E. Hinton novel "The Outsiders" (1983). His starring role as schoolboy-turned-pimp Joel in "Risky Business" broke him as one of Hollywood's newest celebrities. The long shoot schedule of Ridley Scott's fantasy epic "Legend" (1985) briefly took him out of the public eye, but he bounced back with one of the iconic roles of the 1980s. Playing Navy fighter pilot Maverick in Tony Scott's "Top Gun" (1986) turned Cruise into a superstar. He began branching into roles with more heft at the same time when he joined Paul Newman for "The Color of Money" (1986). He continued in that vein during the next several years, working with high profile directors and co-stars in prestige projects. He partnered with Dustin Hoffman for "Rain Man" (1988), Oliver Stone for "Born on the Fourth of July" (1989), and Jack Nicholson for "A Few Good Men" (1993), the first two of which were Oscar-winners for Best Picture. The actor picked up his first Academy Award nomination for "Born on the Fourth of July." While it didn't garner the same level of critical acclaim, his role as Anne Rice's vampire Lestat opposite a young Brad Pitt in "Interview with a Vampire" (1994) became as well-remembered as any of the actor's roles. His 11-year marriage to Nicole Kidman saw the couple partner on three films including Ron Howard's "Far and Away" (1992) and Stanley Kubrick's "Eyes Wide Shut" (1999). By the '90s, he had his pick of roles and began mixing in big-budget populist fare like "Mission: Impossible" (1996), based on the '60s television show of the same name. His role as secret agent Ethan Hunt proved popular enough for a series of sequels that would extend for more than two decades. Cruise also notched a second Oscar nomination for his role as a sports agent gaining a conscious in Cameron Crowe's "Jerry Maguire" (1996). He worked with another rising filmmaker when he played motivational speaker Frank Mackey in Paul Thomas Anderson's "Magnolia" (1999), a role that earned him another Academy Award nomination. After the turn of the century, Cruise bounced between effects-heavy fare like "Minority Report" (2002) and "War of the Worlds" (2005) to dramas such as "Lions for Lambs" (2007) with Robert Redford and Meryl Streep. He also proved himself willing to puncture his own inflated image, with comedic cameos in "Austin Powers in Goldmember" (2002) and "Tropic Thunder" (2008), and his musical turn in "Rock of Ages" (2012). He similarly adopted a self-effacing posture when fans began noticing that there was a scene of the actor running in nearly all his films. Over the years, he found himself a magnet for the tabloids thanks to his close ties to the Church of Scientology and his celebrity marriages to Kidman and Katie Holmes. Cruise added another action franchise to his resume when he jumped into the role of Lee Child's literary tough guy "Jack Reacher" (2012). He would reprise the role in "Jack Reacher: Never Go Back" (2016). After starring in the big-budget reboot of "The Mummy" (2017) and the drama "American Made" (2017), he returned to the role that once cemented his superstar status. More than 20 years after the original, Cruise climbed back into the cockpit to revive Maverick for a sequel to his 1986 hit "Top Gun: Maverick" (2020).

The 10 Best Tom Cruise Movies, Ranked

He can be our wingman any time..

Matt Fowler Avatar

Ever since exploding onto the scene in the 1980s, Tom Cruise has remained one of the most popular actors in Hollywood. His personal life was once constant tabloid fodder, but in theaters Cruise always managed to keep us entertained. Whether he's shooting down Russian MIGs, running from or toward danger, or just being handsome and charming, Cruise rarely disappoints.

We figured the time had come to take a look at Cruise's prolific career and pick out his best films. From early efforts like Rain Man to '90s classics like A Few Good Men to more recent favorites such as Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol and Edge of Tomorrow, these are the movies any self-respecting Tom Cruise fan needs to see.

In the interest of keeping this Tom Cruise Top 10 lean and mean we've decided to only pick the best film from franchise s - the one that best represents Cruise's strengths as an actor.

Top 10 Tom Cruise Movies

10. Edge of Tomorrow (2014)

tom cruise 1er film

Where to Watch: Hulu, Max

One of Tom Cruise's best action movies -- with a name that got overtaken by the tagline, so that the home/digital release has this as Live. Die. Repeat.: Edge of Tomorrow -- takes the classic Cruise formula of "a***hole who gets humbled and redeemed" and cranked it up to 11, having his cowardly Major William Cage die countless deaths as he Groundhog Day's his way through a last-ditch battle against an alien invasion. With the help of a soldier who previously had his reset-the-day power, played by Emily Blunt, Cage transforms from meek to mighty, becoming a super solider who can not only act like a one man army but also crack the mystery of the alien horde's one weakness. Edge of Tomorrow, from director Doug Limon, is a thrilling, creative, and funny take on the time loop genre, with Cruise at his best.

9. Minority Report (2002)

tom cruise 1er film

Where to Watch: Paramount+

Philip K. Dick was nothing if not a prolific science fiction writer. It's no surprise that so many of his short stories and novels have been fodder for movie adaptations over the years. But Minority Report stands out as one of the few that stuck close to the source material. Even the title stayed the same, which is more than we can say for films like Total Recall and Blade Runner.

In this futuristic sci-fi tale, Cruise plays John Anderton, the chief of a new police division called Precrime. Using a trio of psychically-inclined mutants called Precogs, Precrime is able to arrest criminals before they commit crimes. But when Anderton finds his name is next on the list, he's forced to go rogue and attempt to clear his name before he winds up committing murder.

It's a great premise that allowed for plenty of suspenseful action and scenes of Cruise running, which was becoming more and more his shtick by that point. The biggest change Minority Report made to the source material was in giving viewers a more youthful, attractive protagonist, and we didn't hear anyone complaining about that particular edit. Under Steven Spielberg's direction, Minority Report offered a thoughtful, eye-catching look at the future that was probably more precog than we'd like to believe.

8. Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol

tom cruise 1er film

Where to Watch: Prime Video, Paramount+

It's pretty rare for a franchise to maintain its quality by the time it reaches the fourth installment. Heck, a lot of franchises fall apart once the first sequel hits and it becomes a franchise in the first place. T he Mission: Impossible series is the rare exception. Most fans would agree that the third and fourth films are the best in the series. We're inclined to put the fourth on top, but there's certainly a case to be made for M:I III as well.

Ghost Protocol upped the ante by putting Cruise's Ethan Hunt and his fellow IMF agents on the wrong side of the law. There was a new sense of desperation to their mission as they worked both to save the day and clear their names in the wake of a terrorist attack on the Kremlin. Ghost Protocol boats some of the finest action sequences in the history of the franchise, including Hunt's death-defying climb up a skyscraper in Dubai. Cruise has a habit of throwing himself into his action roles and performing many of his own stunts. That devotion/insanity really elevated Ghost Protocol. The movie also proved that director Brad Bird has a knack for live-action films as well as animated ones. It's little wonder he's on just about everyone's short list to direct a Star Wars movie.

7. Magnolia (1999)

tom cruise 1er film

It's rare to see a Tom Cruise movie where the actor isn't front and center the entire time. But Cruise tried something a little different when he joined the cast of Paul Thomas Anderson's 1999 drama Magnolia . Here, Cruise was one of nine main characters whose stories intertwined in the sort of complex narrative Anderson does so well. Cruise played Frank T.J. Mackey, a handsome but slightly sleazy pitchman for an infomercial about getting laid. It was a much more successful foray into the realm of sex and perversion than Cruise's previous role in Stanley Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut.

Between the ensemble cast and much-maligned three-hour run-time, Magnolia struggled to find an audience at theaters. But as with pretty much every P.T. Anderson film, it had no trouble with critics. In terms of Cruise's role specifically, many likened it to the revitalizing change of pace John Travolta found when he starred in Pulp Fiction. Every so often we need a reminder that Cruise can break the mold, and Magnolia certainly proved that much.

6. Collateral (2004)

tom cruise 1er film

Where to Watch: Paramount+, Hoopla

Cruise has pretty much earned his doctorate in playing attractive, charming leading men at this point. We imagine sometimes even the most hardcore Cruise fans want to see the actor break the mold and play the bad guy for a change. Collateral wasn't the first time Cruise switched to the dark side, but it is his most memorable effort.

That's not to say the usual Cruise charm wasn't still dialed up to 11 for this movie. Collateral paired Cruise with Jamie Foxx. The latter played, Max, a humble LA cab driver with dreams of moving up in the world. The former played, Vincent, a dapper but ruthless hitman who enlisted the reluctant Max as his driver for a busy night of executions. Collateral showcased director Michael Mann's same strong visual style and love for the LA cityscape that was so apparent in Heat two decades earlier. And Cruise and Foxx enjoyed an intense dynamic as the night wore on and Max's situation became increasingly desperate. Maybe Cruise didn't veer as far from his usual self as he could have in this role, but it was still fun to see his dangerous, unhinged side slip through.

5. Rain Man (1988)

tom cruise 1er film

Where to Watch: Paramount+, MGM+, Fubo

Throughout the '80s, Cruise had developed a reputation for starring in comedies and action films, always playing similar shades of the same charming, attractive, capable leading man. But in 1989, Rain Man came along and finally established that Cruise had potential as a dramatic actor too.

Cruise's character was actually a pretty big jerk in the early scenes of this movie. Here, Cruise played Charlie Babbitt, a flashy car dealer who mistreats just about everybody in his life. But after discovering the autistic brother he never knew (played by Dustin Hoffman in perhaps his most iconic performance), Charlie begins a journey of personal growth and maturation. Though Charlie initially tries to exploit his brother's superhuman memory and math skills for profit, he grows to care deeply for Raymond. From there, the movie explores the ethical dilemma of Raymond's situation. Is it better for Charlie to care for his brother and provide him with a real family, or return him to the mental institution where he's lived much of his adult life?

Hoffman was perhaps the more visible actor in this project, but it was really Charlie's story in the end. Cruise brought just the right blend of charm, arrogance, and emotional range to the plate, and he nailed the role.

4. A Few Good Men (1992)

tom cruise 1er film

Where to Watch: AMC+

Like a number of Tom Cruise movies, A Few Good Men has that one iconic scene that everybody knows, even if they've never actually watched the entire thing. In this case it's the climactic courtroom showdown between Cruise and Jack Nicholson, where the latter insists, "You can't handle the truth!"

In this movie (which writer Aaron Sorkin adapted from his stage play), Cruise plays a hotshot J.A.G. attorney named Daniel Kaffee. Kaffee is paired with the overzealous investigator JoAnne Galloway (Demi Moore) to defend two Marines accused of murdering a fellow Corpsman, one who had apparently been prepared to blow the whistle on an international incident at Guantanamo Bay. Pulling the strings of the increasingly dark conspiracy behind the killing is the virulent Colonel Nathan Jessup (Nicholson).

Elements of Cruise's usual leading man persona were still in full force with this role. Kaffee was very much the arrogant young hotshot who cared more for closing cases than seeking real justice. But the complicated courtroom drama and the Odd Couple dynamic between Kaffee and Galloway in this movie allowed his character to grow and Cruise to flex his dramatic muscle.

3. Jerry Maguire (1996)

tom cruise 1er film

"Show me the money!"

"You had me at hello."

There certainly isn't a more quotable Tom Cruise movie than Jerry Maguire . In this slightly odd combination of romantic comedy and sports drama, Cruise plays the title character, a professional sports agent who suddenly develops a conscience about the often amoral practices of his industry. It's a move that's good for his self-esteem and bad for his career. But over the course of the movie, Maguire finds new hope thanks to a single mother he falls in love with (Renee Zellweger) and an NFL star (Cuba Gooding Jr.) who may hold the key to putting his career back on track.

Cruise didn't veer that far from the norm in this role, but Jerry Maguire was a movie that suited his on-screen charisma and handsome looks well. The movie was arguably the peak of Gooding Jr's career, netting him an Oscar win and paving the way for such choice fare as Snow Dogs and Daddy Day Care.

2. Born on the Fourth of July (1989)

tom cruise 1er film

Oliver Stone has made a number of questionable directing choices in recent years, but his career was at its height when he filmed his trilogy of films focused on the Vietnam War. Born on the Fourth of July is the second entry in this series, following 1986's Platoon and preceding 1993's Heaven & Earth. In this project, Cruise was tapped to play Ron Kovic, a Vietnam veteran whose autobiography served as the basis for the script. The movie traces Kovic's painful transition from idealistic young American to embattled soldier to wheelchair-bound anti-war activist.

More than any other movie in the '80s, this was the project that truly established Cruise's potential as an actor. Early on, Kovic is exactly the sort of handsome, charming character we expect from Cruise. But as Kovic becomes increasingly scarred by his experiences (physically and psychologically), we see Cruise tap into his darker side and present a much more tortured protagonist. Even 25 years later, this stands as one of his finest performances. The only reason he didn't walk home with an Oscar that year was because he was up against the juggernaut that is Daniel Day-Lewis.

1. Top Gun: Maverick (2022)

tom cruise 1er film

In a previous incarnation of this list, 1986's Top Gun was in the number one spot. Well, in keeping with our rule of only including one movie from a franchise on the list -- the best entry from that franchise -- the top spot goes to Maverick now. There might be a touch of "recency bias" here, sure (though the list has films from all eras), Top Gun: Maverick is miraculous decades-later sequel that not only bests the original but thanks to its incredible legs in theaters wound up being Tom Cruise's top-grossing movie of all time, earning 1.5 billion worldwide. Everything has evolved here, from story to stunts to Cruise's acting chops. Maverick is emotional, entertaining, and stands as the perfect encapsulation of Cruise's career.

All 44 Tom Cruise movies, ranked from worst to best

  • Tom Cruise has done every type of movie you can think of over his nearly 40-year career.
  • Here we rank every one from worst to best.
  • See where his latest, "Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One," ranks in his career filmography.

43. "Rock of Ages" (2012)

tom cruise 1er film

Somehow Cruise got roped into being part of this feature-film adaptation of the hit Broadway musical. But leave it to him to lay it all out there.

Though the movie is unwatchable, Cruise provides its only memorable moments when his rock-star character belts out classic songs like "Pour Some Sugar on Me" and "Wanted Dead or Alive."

42. "Endless Love" (1981)

tom cruise 1er film

Cruise's first appearance in a movie is this 1980s teen romance drama starring Brooke Shields that's best known for giving us the Diana Ross/Lionel Richie title song.

Cruise gets a brief bit of screen time as one of the male lead's friends. It's quite forgettable, but it's still better than "Rock of Ages."

41. "Jack Reacher: Never Go Back" (2016)

tom cruise 1er film

Between "Mission: Impossible" movies, Cruise tried to kick off another action franchise by bringing the main character of the Lee Child novel series to the big screen.

Though the first movie just got over the $200 million mark at the worldwide box office, the performance (or lack thereof) by the sequel indicated no one wanted any more Mr. Reacher. It barely made $162 million worldwide.

40. "The Mummy" (2017)

tom cruise 1er film

Cruise was all set to be the Robert Downey Jr. of Universal's Dark Universe with the release of this movie and promises of more creature pictures to come. But playing a soldier of fortune who tries to stop an ancient Egyptian princess from taking over the world didn't grab audiences. It was another franchise not meant to be.

39. "Losin' It" (1983)

tom cruise 1er film

Still getting his legs under him in the movie biz, Cruise signed onto this teen comedy in which he's one of four friends who go on a hard-partying road trip to Tijuana in hopes of losing their virginity. Yes, even Cruise couldn't hide from the teen-sex-comedy genre when he started his career.

38. "Mission: Impossible II" (2000)

tom cruise 1er film

Man, John Woo deserved better than this. The legendary Hong Kong director took over the "Mission: Impossible" reins after Brian De Palma kicked things off with the first movie, but Woo didn't find the same success.

"Mission: Impossible II" did go on to become one of the highest-grossing movies of 2000, with over $546 million earned worldwide, but with its weak plot and character development, it has not aged anywhere near as well as the first movie (or the other movies in the franchise).

37. "Jack Reacher" (2012)

tom cruise 1er film

Though "Jack Reacher" was the first time Cruise worked with his longtime "Mission: Impossible" director, Christopher McQuarrie, and it features the legendary director Werner Herzog as the movie's villain, Cruise as Jack Reacher is a seen-it-before character who isn't exciting.

36. "Oblivion" (2013)

tom cruise 1er film

Here, Cruise attempted to go the sci-fi route in hopes of having a breakthrough "Minority Report"-like experience for the audience. But the story was nowhere as sharp, and its postapocalyptic vibe left us all feeling uninterested.

35. "Lions for Lambs" (2007)

tom cruise 1er film

Marking the first movie released by United Artists after Cruise and his producing partner Paula Wagner took over (the two left UA after a couple of years) was "Lions for Lambs," a tense drama set around the war in Afghanistan and directed by Robert Redford.

Cruise gave his all playing an agenda-pushing senator and has some strong scenes opposite Meryl Streep. But the movie is just dull.

34. "Far and Away" (1992)

tom cruise 1er film

Cruise and his wife at the time, Nicole Kidman, paired together in this 1890s-set epic directed by Ron Howard. The two play Irish immigrants seeking a fortune in America. Outside the lush photography, there isn't much to enjoy about this movie. And don't get me started on Cruise's awful Irish accent.

33. "Vanilla Sky" (2001)

tom cruise 1er film

At the tail end of Cruise's heartthrob phase, the director Cameron Crowe teamed with him again after their hugely successful collaboration on "Jerry Maguire" to make a very different love story.

Based on the Spanish movie "Open Your Eyes," Cruise plays a vain New York City media playboy who has a different outlook on life after being in a horrific car crash. Though Cruise, Cameron Diaz, and Penélope Cruz (who also starred in "Open Your Eyes") all give top performances, Crowe goes too weird with the story, leaving viewers out in the void by the time the movie gets into the home stretch.

32. "American Made" (2017)

tom cruise 1er film

Mixing action and dark comedy in telling the real-life story of the drug runner Barry Seal seemed like a nice pivot for Cruise, but at the end of the day, the director Doug Liman's movie is just too glossy to be taken seriously. (Accent update: Cruise delivers a tolerable Southern drawl.)

31. "The Last Samurai" (2003)

tom cruise 1er film

Cruise stars as an American soldier in 19th-century Japan who embraces the samurai culture. The movie went on to receive four Oscar nominations, but it's the kind of title in which one viewing is enough.

And on a side note: Wow, would this movie get hammered on social media if it came out today.

30. "Valkyrie" (2008)

tom cruise 1er film

Another release from the time Cruise was calling the shots at UA, "Valkyrie" sees him playing one of the rogue Nazi officers who attempt to assassinate Adolf Hitler.

(Accent update: Cruise — and basically most of the other Nazi officers — decided to not even bother with a German accent. Good choice; the audience didn't even notice [ holds back giggles ].)

29. "Cocktail" (1988)

tom cruise 1er film

It's one of the movies in Cruise's career that ride fully on his good looks. Honestly, this movie should have just been titled "Sex." Cruise plays a hot New York City bartender who has dreams of making it big, and it's his hotness that's going to get him to the top. It's classic Hot Guy Cruise — who cares that the story is garbage.

28. "War of the Worlds" (2005)

tom cruise 1er film

Steven Spielberg teamed up with Cruise after "Minority Report" for this blockbuster remake of the classic sci-fi movie. Though it made a lot of money, it was dark in tone — maybe a little too dark. Be honest: Have you wanted to see this movie again?

27. "Knight and Day" (2010)

tom cruise 1er film

This is one of those movies that don't get enough credit. The director James Mangold cleverly takes all the common action-hero traits and has Cruise make fun of them. You might want to give this one another viewing.

26. "Taps" (1981)

tom cruise 1er film

Unlike in "Endless Love," Cruise really capitalized on this small role. As a military cadet who takes his responsibilities way too seriously, Cruise is a standout in the movie and showed audiences (and Hollywood executives) that he had leading-man potential.

25. "Mission: Impossible III" (2006)

tom cruise 1er film

J.J. Abrams takes over the franchise for this one and does an impressive job. It also helps that you have the talents of Philip Seymour Hoffman playing the villain. It's better than "Mission: Impossible II," so we're going in the right direction.

24. "The Outsiders" (1983)

tom cruise 1er film

Francis Ford Coppola's adaptation of the classic novel brought all the biggest names from young Hollywood together, and Cruise was right there in the mix. With Matt Dillon, Ralph Macchio, Patrick Swayze, C. Thomas Howell, Emilio Estevez, and Rob Lowe, the movie is pretty heavy-handed with the drama, but it's fun to watch all these amazing talents on the screen together.

23. "Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation" (2015)

tom cruise 1er film

Rebounding from the so-so performance of "Jack Reacher," McQuarrie jumps on the "Mission: Impossible" franchise and ups the action stakes. Yep, this is the one where Cruise hangs from the side of a giant plane taking off. The movie also got an extra jolt with the inclusion of Rebecca Ferguson in the supporting cast.

22. "Mission: Impossible — Fallout" (2018)

tom cruise 1er film

This "Mission: Impossible" could go down as one of the best action movies ever — its stunts and action sequences are that amazing. This time, McQuarrie gives us a deeper look at what makes Ethan Hunt tick and the values he lives by. But it's really the action that stays with you.

21. "Minority Report" (2002)

tom cruise 1er film

With its breakthroughs in CGI and tech, the first teaming of Spielberg and Cruise lived up to the hype. This movie was so advanced in its execution and what it showcased that it had a "Jurassic Park"-style ripple effect, in the sense that it has influenced countless action and sci-fi movies since.

20. "Tropic Thunder" (2008)

tom cruise 1er film

Though Cruise doesn't have a lot of screen time, his presence in this movie cannot be ignored. Playing a despicable movie executive named Les Grossman, he brings that patented intensity to a role that for most actors would have been a mail-it-in cameo role. In Cruise's hands, it's one of the best comedic performances of the early 2000s.

19. "All the Right Moves" (1983)

tom cruise 1er film

Two months after Cruise hit theaters with his first lead movie, "Risky Business," he was back again with this very different movie about a Pennsylvania high-school football player who clashes with his coach.

"Risky Business" showed that Cruise had no problem being the face of a movie, but "All the Right Moves" proved he could be more than the charming lead with good looks. This one showed he could be a serious actor.

18. "Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol" (2011)

tom cruise 1er film

It's the movie that breathed life back into the "Mission: Impossible" franchise. It came five years after "Mission: Impossible III," and in that time Cruise struggled with an image problem and a string of underperforming movies. He had a lot to prove with this one. And with the casting of Jeremy Renner, Cruise probably sensed he could lose his beloved franchise if the movie didn't work.

However, Brad Bird's direction and Cruise's disregard for common sense — in this one he climbs the world's tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, in Dubai — put him back on top, as the movie became a global hit.

17. "Top Gun" (1986)

tom cruise 1er film

Before "Days of Thunder," Cruise and Tony Scott teamed up for what would become one of the actor's most iconic roles: the fighter pilot Maverick. What Cruise doesn't pull off acting-wise he makes up for with brooding looks and shirtless volleyball skills.

16. "The Firm" (1993)

tom cruise 1er film

In "The Firm," based on the best-selling John Grisham novel, Cruise gives a fantastic performance as a hotshot lawyer who signs on with one of the most prestigious US law firms only to find it has quite a dark side. The era of "Tom Cruise runs" really launched with this movie.

15. "Legend" (1985)

tom cruise 1er film

Ridley Scott's beautiful fantasy movie is still a marvel of moviemaking. The practical effects and production design put into this movie, made back when CGI was scarce, are a treasure. And at the center is a fresh-faced Cruise who tries to get his girl back from the villain who gave me the most nightmares as a kid, Darkness (played perfectly by Tim Curry).

14. "Collateral" (2004)

tom cruise 1er film

We really don't talk enough about this one enough. Michael Mann's slow-burn crime movie stars Cruise as a hitman who forces a cab driver (Jamie Foxx) to drive him around Los Angeles as he goes on his "jobs." The acting by both Cruise and Foxx in this movie is some of their best work.

13. "Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One" (2023)

tom cruise 1er film

There are many things to love about the "Mission: Impossible" franchise: Its James Bond-like gadgets. Cruise's disregard for his life and safety when it comes to pulling off amazing stunts . But the biggest thing to love is that the films just seem to get better and better.

The first "M:I," directed by Brian De Palma, set the bar very high. However, since McQuarrie took the reins in 2015 with "Rogue Nation," the franchise has gotten a jolt in the arm. It seems to always outdo itself, and "Dead Reckoning" makes good on that promise.

The high stakes, the timely villain being AI, and, of course, Tom Cruise in the middle of some amazing thrills makes this film one of the best in the franchise.

13. "Eyes Wide Shut" (1999)

tom cruise 1er film

Cruise and Kidman teamed up again, this time under the watch of Stanley Kubrick in what would be his final movie. Both actors are pushed to the limits as the movie explores a marriage at a crossroads. Though "Eyes Wide Shut" is not close to Kubrick's best work, Cruise and Kidman are riveting.

12. "Top Gun: Maverick" (2022)

tom cruise 1er film

Thirty-six years after playing Pete "Maverick" Mitchell he returns to the role in the rare legacy sequel that's better than the original movie.

Though Tony Scott's landmark "Top Gun" made Cruise a superstar and became an instant 1980s classic, the director Joseph Kosinski has elevated the story with more death-defying dogfight jet stunts and a more compelling story.

This time Maverick returns to the Top Gun school to be a teacher of the new hot-shot pilots. But he must deal with his own demons as one of the students is the son of his best friend, Goose, who died in his arms in the first movie.

Cruise delivers one of his best performances in years.

11. "Days of Thunder" (1990)

tom cruise 1er film

It's pretty much everything you would think would be in a Tony Scott movie: lots of fast cars and big egos. Cruise is in his glory in every scene playing the hot-shot Nascar driver Cole Trickle (and Kidman appears as his love interest).

10. "Risky Business" (1983)

tom cruise 1er film

It's the movie that made Cruise a star. The coming-of-age story doesn't shy away from its mature storyline, and Cruise delivers a playful performance but also shows sparks of his dramatic chops that he'll showcase in the decade to come.

9. "Mission: Impossible" (1996)

tom cruise 1er film

Boy have things changed since the first "Mission: Impossible." With De Palma at the helm, the movie had its action, but it was encased in a tense whodunit thriller. Since then the action has only gotten bigger (and the story, well, less of a concern), but Cruise has always been fantastic as Hunt.

The first movie is his best acting work of the franchise. (Accent update: Cruise delivers another Southern accent while disguised at the beginning of the movie — one of those classic face-rip-off disguises. It's brief but effective in the scene.)

8. "Interview with the Vampire" (1994)

tom cruise 1er film

Cruise gives one of his best performances as Lestat, a vampire from the 1700s who finds a lot of drama in his undead life once he recruits Louis (Brad Pitt). (Accent update: His little hint of a French accent to stay true to the character's portrayal in the classic Anne Rice book is perfectly subtle.)

7. "Edge of Tomorrow" (2014)

tom cruise 1er film

Whether you want to call it "Edge of Tomorrow" or "Live. Die. Repeat.," it's just a really great action movie. With Liman directing and McQuarrie as a screenwriter, Cruise is surrounded by people he trusts to make a risky project: a soldier who relives the same day. But the MVP of the movie is Emily Blunt, who delivers a performance that makes Cruise kick it up a few notches.

6. "Rain Man" (1988)

tom cruise 1er film

Always at his best when he's playing a character with major conflict, Cruise plays a guy always looking to capitalize on the angles until he's finally in a situation in which he has to be on the level: building a relationship with his autistic savant brother (Dustin Hoffman).

5. "Jerry Maguire" (1996)

tom cruise 1er film

Receiving a best-actor nomination for his performance as a slick sports agent whose life turns upside down after having a moment of clarity, Cruise was, thanks to this movie, at his height of stardom and power in Hollywood.

4. "A Few Good Men" (1992)

tom cruise 1er film

Rob Reiner's courtroom drama has Cruise going up against Jack Nicholson, and it's pure magic. Yes, there's the "can't handle the truth" scene, but for us, it starts earlier in the movie when the two characters meet for the first time.

Thanks to the incredible dialogue by Aaron Sorkin, both actors subtly trade off with each other, but it's the fire being held back that makes the ending when they are face-to-face again so memorable.

3. "Magnolia" (1999)

tom cruise 1er film

No matter what you think of Paul Thomas Anderson's epic look at family, love, and forgiveness, it's hard to dispute that it has the most powerful performance of Cruise's career.

Playing a pickup artist who uses his talents to build a public-speaking career, Cruise appears as we've never seen him before. Anderson and Cruise connected over dealing with the loss of their fathers and use that darkness to create the character of Frank T. J. Mackey.

2. "The Color of Money" (1986)

tom cruise 1er film

Paul Newman won only one Oscar in his iconic career, and it was for this movie. But you have to give a big assist to Cruise.

Playing the protégé to the pool player "Fast Eddie" Felson — the role Newman first played in 1961's "The Hustler" — Cruise is a cocky player, and you can never tell whether he's on the level with Felson. Cruise proved once again that he's more than just a pretty face.

1. "Born on the Fourth of July" (1989)

tom cruise 1er film

Cruise got an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of the veteran and activist Ron Kovic, who was paralyzed fighting in Vietnam. Oliver Stone traces Kovic's journey from being a wide-eyed soldier thinking he's doing what's right for America to coming home from the war to find everything has changed. Including the way he views his own country.

Cruise has never been better as he delivers a tour de force performance that still gives us chills.

All about the life and career of the ageless actor Tom Cruise.

Wild Facts All Fans Should Know

Screen Rant

14 best tom cruise action movies (that aren't mission impossible), ranked.

Some of Tom Cruise's best movies of his career are action films, making his all-time list of the genre jam-packed with classics from major directors.

As the face of two of Hollywood's biggest franchises, Tom Cruise is one of the most prolific action movie stars in cinematic history. Cruise's recently released Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One became the highest-rated movie of the celebrated franchise which surprisingly seems to get better with each new film. Cruise has starred in 44 feature films to date since his career began with 1981's Endless Love . The upcoming Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two will be the eighth film of Cruise's longest-standing franchise and will mark his 45th performance in a feature film.

Cruise has been in dozens of iconic movies from The Color of Money and Rain Man to A Few Good Men and Jerry Maguire but has surprisingly not won an Academy Award despite four nominations. Cruise even starred in Stanley Kubrick's final film Eyes Wide Shut and Paul Thomas Anderson's cult classic Magnolia . Cruise has proven throughout his more than 50-year career that he is much more than an action franchise hero and was even credited by Steven Spielberg as the savior of Hollywood in 2022. At 61, the death-defying Cruise shows no signs of stopping anytime soon. Here are his best action movies ranked from worst to best.

RELATED: Mission Impossible 7's Disappointing Box Office Reveals A Hidden Truth Behind Tom Cruise's Success

14 The Mummy (2017)

The Mummy was bogged down by an uninspired screenplay and hollow action sequences generated by sloppy CGI, ultimately disappointing fans and critics alike. Not even Cruise's trademark charisma could bring The Mummy to life, which had meant to be the first installment of another major action franchise for Cruise. The 2017 version of The Mummy feigned in comparison to the over-the-top but enjoyable Branden Fraser movies and a rebooted franchise never found its footing.

13 Jack Reacher: Never Go Back (2016)

The sequel to Christopher McQuarrie's 2012 Jack Reacher was under new direction with Cruise still in the leading titular role. Never Go Back technically makes the Jack Reacher movies collectively Cruise's third active franchise (fourth if you consider the potential of an Edge of Tomorrow 2 ). The Jack Reacher sequel is a solid action thriller that is arguably lacking in originality of character and plot, but fans of Cruise will find the film's flaws easy to overlook.

12 Knight And Day (2010)

Knight and Day combines elements of action, comedy, and romance and is held up by the onscreen chemistry of Cruise and costar Cameron Diaz. With a surprisingly stacked cast including Peter Sarsgaard, Viola Davis, Gal Gadot, and Paul Dano, the potential for this film is seemingly sky-high but ultimately results in an inflated and lukewarm movie. Despite its stylish aesthetic, Knight and Day is ultimately a little too brainless and surface-level to elicit a positive response.

11 Days of Thunder (1990)

Days of Thunder stars Cruise as a NASCAR racer in an apparent attempt to bring his Top Gun energy into a new playing field under director Tony Scott. Paired with Hollywood heavy hitters Robert Duvall, Nicole Kidman, and John C. Reilly, Cruise is given all the fuel he needs to make another great protagonist worth rooting for. Despite suffering from a factory-setting screenplay, Cruise and Co. deliver high-octane energy that offers plenty of fast-paced thrills.

10 Jack Reacher (2012)

The original Jack Reacher featured the directorial efforts of Christopher McQuarrie before he and Cruise paired up for the latter installments of the Mission: Impossible franchise. Jack Reacher is thoughtfully constructed and paced in what in many ways feels like a trial run of Rogue Nation and Fallout . Fans of the recent Mission: Impossible movies will likely find merit in the mystery action thriller.

9 Oblivion (2013)

What Oblivion lacks in identity, it makes up for in gorgeous cinematography and cinematic atmosphere. Backed by a cerebral dreamlike score by M83, Oblivion struggles to present itself fully, weaving in between moments of sci-fi action tropes and beautifully poetic visual storytelling. The stunning aesthetic alone makes Oblivion a fan-favorite for some who are drawn to the fantasy elements of the dystopic world.

8 The Last Samurai (2003)

The Last Samurai is one of Cruise's better action films in the truest sense, full of intensity in both emotion and adventure. The Last Samurai possesses a full-bodied approach that ultimately becomes an epic by veteran action-war director Edward Zwick. Zwick directed large-scale war films such as Glory , Legends of the Fall , and Courage Under Fire before The Last Samurai , one of Cruise's more serious drama films.

7 American Made (2017)

American Made feels like Cruise's contribution to a post- The Wolf of Wall Street Hollywood, placing it in a similar category as War Dogs and Billionaire Boys Club . Even with American Made claiming to be based on a true story, Cruise is able to make it a fun and slick action movie that is full of original twists and the actor's signature charm. American Made has a similar lightheartedness to Edge of Tomorrow , which Doug Liman also directed.

6 Top Gun (1986)

What more can be said about Top Gun that already hasn't been? It's perhaps the most famous Tom Cruise film ever made despite its handful of flaws and stereotypes. The movie is full of legendary moments and one-liners, cementing itself as one of the most quintessential American movies of all time. It's a relatively plotless movie that somehow works on many levels that are difficult to explain other than it's just extremely immersive and fun.

5 War of the Worlds (2005)

War of the Worlds is one of Spielberg's best sci-fi action movies and one of his more gritty and bleak films. Both he and Cruise fully commit to the scale of the original story written by H. G. Wells which doesn't allow much room for their usual bag of tricks, making it an intensely compelling and at times terrifying film. Cruise is reduced to playing a helpless person rather than his typical action star, twisting the genre on its head and ironically producing one of Cruise's better action movies.

4 Minority Report (2002)

Minority Report was the first movie that Spielberg directed Cruise in, bringing the action star into a fictional future for the first time onscreen. Minority Report brings Cruise to new heights on several levels and largely acts as an evolution in his career into becoming a bonafide action star. Spielberg's direction legitimized Cruise as a dramatic actor with a complexity outside of his typical stuntwork and mannerisms, making it a classic in his filmography.

3 Collateral (2004)

Collateral is a sharp and mysterious action thriller that is built upon its great dialogue and the onscreen dynamic between Cruise and co-star Jamie Foxx. The Michael Mann-directed film is seeped in neo-noir influences and is masterfully paced, making Collateral an easy film to revisit for a guaranteed thrill. Cruise atypically plays a villain in the film, giving Collateral another reason why it's one of the actor's best in the genre.

2 Edge of Tomorrow (2014)

After one of the most confusing marketing campaigns in recent memory that made many believe the film's title was "Live. Die. Repeat.", Edge of Tomorrow emerged as one of the most original and enjoyable Tom Cruise action films. The Groundhog Day scenario is given a compelling update in this easily consumable sci-fi movie that was an unlikely action-mystery film disguised as a major blockbuster.

1 Top Gun: Maverick (2022)

After the enormous impact of Top Gun: Maverick at the 2022 box office, there's little question that it is Cruise's best action movie ever. While some of the latter installments of the Mission: Impossible franchise are certainly on par with the scope and scale of Maverick , the Top Gun sequel not only outperformed the original by a long shot, but it was also a better movie in just about every way. Top Gun: Maverick could have been a total letdown but ultimately delivered exactly at the right time, making it Tom Cruise's best action film.

The 10 Best Tom Cruise Action Movies, Ranked

Is there a stunt he won't do?

The movie trailers always show him running, and he's seemingly unwilling to slow down: Tom Cruise is continually at the top of his game. With a career spanning over four decades , this action icon goes all in for every role and production. Oscar-nominated for leading dramatic roles in Jerry Maguire and Born on the Fourth of July , famous for his quotable exchange with Jack Nicholson in A Few Good Men —"I want the truth!" "You can't handle the truth!"—, and recognized for his blockbuster franchise epics, Cruise is by definition a true movie star.

As one of the highest-paid actors in Hollywood , Cruise's action credits include some of the top-grossing movies of all time, long-standing franchises, and page-to-screen adaptations. With stunt work that leaves audiences gasping and skillful acting range that elevates a scene to more, Cruise's filmography includes some of the best in the entire action genre.

10 'Jack Reacher' (2012)

Directed by christopher mcquarrie.

Translating the famous action novel series to the big screen was a challenge fit for a star like Cruise and seasoned collaborating director Christopher McQuarrie . The titular character, Jack (Cruise), is a former military investigator who is called to a murder case involving an ex-sniper. There, he works closely with the suspect's defense attorney, Helen Rodin ( Rosamund Pike ), and the case takes a twist as Reacher dives deeper into the evidence.

This page-to-screen adaptation landed well with viewers and critics; however, Cruise's second outing as Jack Reacher in a sequel was unanimously rotten to the point where he did not reprise the role again in future movies or the current Amazon series. Jack Reacher is an action film that's better than you thought it'd be, but still remains seemingly lackluster compared to other entries in Cruise's illustrious career.

9 'American Made' (2017)

Directed by doug liman.

Certainly, a morally gray character in his character canon, Cruise is charismatic as Barry Seal. The action comedy is based on a true story about an American pilot who becomes in charge of a covert CIA operation where he becomes a drug runner in the 1980s. The feature would not be the first time Cruise and director Doug Liman have teamed up, but American Made is the polar opposite of their previous action work together.

American Made focuses more on complex character development versus the usual explosions, running, and sweaty-palm stunts Cruise fans are used to; however, accidents on the set loomed over the production. It's more comedy than action, but with Cruise's star power and all the complete ingredients, it's a suitable non-franchise feature.

8 'War of the Worlds' (2005)

Directed by steven spielberg.

This would be the second time in which Steven Spielberg and Cruise would work together to bring a sci-fi adaptation to the screen. Based on the classic H.G. Wells novel, War of the Worlds finds humanity under alien attack. The fight for survival is told through the perspective of blue-collar father Ray Ferrier (Cruise) and his children ( Dakota Fanning and Justin Chatwin ).

When audiences think of action stars, they think: Cruise. When they think of blockbuster directors, they think: Spielberg . The pair presented a sci-fi action installment that both terrified and thrilled audiences while respecting the notoriety of the original acclaimed feature and source material. War of the Worlds remains one of their best entries because not only did it deliver its action promise, it provoked a deeper inner dialogue with viewers about the traumas and experiences post-9/11 .

War of The Worlds

7 'the last samurai' (2003), directed by edward zwick.

The 90s and 2000s were home to a genre of period action dramas led by powerhouse actors like Mel Gibson in Braveheart and The Patriot , Daniel Day-Lewis in The Last of the Mohicans , Kevin Coster in Dances with Wolves , and Russell Crowe in Gladiator . The Last Samurai is Tom Cruise's entry in that genre of action as Captain Nathan Algren, an officer in the post-Civil War American military, sent to Japan at the request of the Emperor ( Shichinosuke Nakamura ) to train their army in modern warfare tactics.

Despite some initial controversy (i.e. the title paired with Cruise's image), The Last Samurai holds its own , especially when it comes to production value. Edward Zwick and the writers crafted an epic narrative focused on tradition and redemption against the backdrop of grand battle scenes and world-building. The film earned four Oscar nominations, two of which were for Best Costume Design and Best Art Direction-Set Decoration.

6 'Minority Report' (2002)

Two legendary cinematic icons collaborated to bring to the big screen an adaptation of Philip K. Dick's famous sci-fi novella "Minority Report." Cruise stars as Chief John Anderton of the Pre-crime Division, a police unit that uses the psychic abilities of the PreCogs to arrest and convict criminals before they commit their crimes. John's world and purpose change drastically when he is predicted to murder a man he's never met.

A dark feature for both industry titans, Spielberg's Minority Report is an action thriller that remains relevant and an excellent repeat watch today. From Cruise's complex performance to Spielberg's masterful world-building, the questions of surveillance and privacy in an advancing age of technology elevate the film some twenty years later.

Minority Report

5 'collateral' (2004), directed by michael mann.

Michael Mann flips the action script for Cruise, this time the action legend starring as the villain. Opposite Jamie Foxx , Collateral features Cruise as Vincent, a contract killer, who uses Max (Foxx), a cab driver, to deliver him to each of his hits throughout one night in Los Angeles. Foxx's performance earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor. The film's second Oscar nomination was for Best Film Editing.

The signature styling of Michael Mann paired well with a one-off villainous performance by Cruise . Instead of relying on high-stakes sequences and jaw-dropping stunts, Collateral brings out the acting in Cruise instead of forcing audiences to rely on the usual action suspects.

4 'Top Gun: Maverick' (2022)

Directed by joseph kosinski.

The highly-anticipated sequel demolished any potential of falling victim to the drawn-out sequel/remake curse . With 30 years of Naval service to his name, Maverick returns to the Top Gun Academy to train a new group of recruits for a highly specialized mission with maneuvers that have never been successfully executed before. To complicate matters, one of the top graduates is Lt. Bradley Bradshaw ( Miles Teller ), the son of Maverick's deceased best friend Goose.

Top Gun: Maverick roared into theaters, becoming the highest-grossing feature for Cruise and breaking multiple records along the way with its $1.4 billion run . The action feat took all the successful elements of the original and capitalized on the potential of modern resources, including star power.

Top Gun: Maverick

3 'edge of tomorrow' (2014).

Originally titled "Live Die Repeat: Edge of Tomorrow," what ultimately became the feature's tagline sums up the premise. As aliens wreak havoc on the world , Major William Cage (Cruise) is sent into combat on a suicide mission. Having never seen combat, Cage is killed almost instantly; however, he's thrust into a time loop of the same battle that leads to his death. As he lives through and dies in the loop over and over again, his combat experience improves, teaming up with comrade, Rita ( Emily Blunt ), in their attempts to kill the aliens.

This is an action film that drew audiences in with all the right elements—Cruise, Blunt, sci-fi action, and a corny, but accurate tagline—and produced a blockbuster hit. Edge of Tomorrow steers clear of the action genre's pitfalls of poor storylines and writing for the sake of action. Co-written by Christopher McQuarrie , Jez Butterworth , and John-Henry Butterworth , the script and Cage's character set Cruise up for success to carry yet another one-off action hit.

Edge of Tomorrow

2 'top gun' (1986), directed by tony scott.

A blockbuster turned cult classic, Top Gun is the second franchise that is synonymous with the name Tom Cruise. He stars as the iconic Maverick, a hot-shot pilot competing for the bragging rights of best in the class at the Top Gun Naval Fighter Weapons school. He's enrolled alongside his close friend and co-pilot Goose ( Anthony Edwards ), the pair antagonizing their top competitor, Iceman ( Val Kilmer ).

The film is formulaic action with its cocky, but talented leading role, a quick tragedy to humble him, a kick-ass theme song, that beach volleyball scene , and heart-dropping action sequences. Top Gun is a foundational 80s action film that, despite a lackluster outing with critics, earned four technical Oscar nominations, winning for Best Original Song .

1 'Mission: Impossible' Franchise (1996-)

Directed by brian de palma, john woo, j.j. abrams, brad bird, and christopher mcquarrie.

In this iconic franchise , every installment truly gets better and better as they consistently up the action ante. A career-defining character, Cruise stars as Ethan Hunt, an Impossible Missions Force agent. The first installment, Mission: Impossible , finds Ethan at the beginning of his IMF career. The series follows Ethan's adventurous career, each chapter an individual instance in the larger scheme of IMF and the forces working against it.

As each Mission Impossible increases in size and action magnitude, Cruise is at the forefront of pushing the limits. He's known for never shying away from a death-defying stunt , allowing the franchise to pack in the authenticity of the great action film for audiences. Cruise's investment in this franchise, from production to stunts and the acting performances in between, make it truly his best action work.

Edge of Tomorrow is the best movie there is about what it’s like to be Tom Cruise

T here are no other movie stars like Tom Cruise . And despite his litany of hits across an over 40-year career, there’s no better movie to explain his stardom than 2014’s Edge of Tomorrow .

Director Doug Liman ’s future-set action movie about humanity’s war with robots casts Cruise daringly against type as Cage, a stiff bureaucrat in a suit, terrified, cruel, cowardly , and almost completely incapable… at least, at first. But when he suddenly gets the power to reset to a certain moment in time when he dies (and with a little training from Emily Blunt’s legendary war hero), he slowly begins to learn how to fight, how to lead, and how to win the war. It’s basically Groundhog Day with robots, guns, and giant swords .

But beyond just being an incredibly kickass action movie — which it is — Edge of Tomorrow is also an incredible deconstruction of Cruise as an actor. For years, Cruise’s on-screen MO has been effortless charm and talent. He was a brilliant lawyer who won an impossible case the instant he decided to try in A Few Good Men , he was a pool shark who could beat the pros in The Color of Money , and he was the best pilot at a school full of the best pilots in Top Gun . But Edge of Tomorrow was the first movie to let us in on a secret Cruise would spend the entire decade after exploring: Appearing effortless takes a tremendous amount of work.

Edge of Tomorrow is like a movie made of behind-the-scenes footage. It’s the cinema of grueling, endless hard work, and the incremental improvements determination can get you. Cage dies over and over and over again. His development as a savior of humanity is, like anyone’s development at anything, decidedly nonlinear. Sometimes he makes genuine progress, getting a few feet further into the battlefield before the robots mow him down. Other times, he tries something new and dies faster than he ever has before. But even in those failures, Cruise’s trademark focus comes through — in his tight-lipped sneers or the way he tenses his jaw and narrows his eyes — and we see the improvement building. And slowly, by the end of the movie, Cage looks as effortless in battle as Tom Cruise felt in the ’80s.

And that effort — the hard work and grueling failure — is the real secret to Cruise’s success . Watch any behind-the-scenes footage of his Mission: Impossible movies and it’s impossible not to see little bits and pieces of Cage in there. In fact, a major part of the promotional campaign for Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One was how many attempts it took for Cruise to nail the stunt where he jumps a motorcycle off a cliff and parachutes away .

Hard work is more than just a part of Cruise’s movies now; it’s baked into why he wants you to see them. He’s way beyond effortless cool now, and we have Edge of Tomorrow to thank for that. Now that he’s in the latter half of his career, Cruise is finally ready to let us know that he’s not just the biggest star in Hollywood, but the hardest-working one, too.

Edge of Tomorrow is streaming on Apple TV Plus, or rentable on Amazon , Apple , and Vudu .

The Fire Behind The Film: ‘Dune: Part Two’

This project is being treated as top secret, with no plot details available other than it being a new original story written by Iñárritu. What is known is that the Oscar-winning director has been taking meetings with a select few actors in recent weeks, with Cruise being one of the first. The A-list star has been hungry to find that next project and moved quickly to get a meeting with Iñárritu once he was made aware the director was moving forward with his next big studio film. As soon as the meeting finished, Cruise was on board.

The project fits in with what Cruise, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav and WB studio chiefs Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy had in mind when the movie star signed his strategic partnership last month, specifically something that is both original and meant to be seen on the biggest screens around the world.

The film would mark Inarritu’s first major studio film since directing The Revenant, which not only went on to gross more then $500 million at the worldwide box office but also led to his second straight Best Director Oscar win (and Leonardo DiCaprio’s first win for acting). Iñárritu took a break after an exhausting stretch that also included directing his Best Picture winner Birdman . He had been toying with some ideas in 2019 but ultimately turned his attentions to his passion project Bardo at Netflix and tabled his next big studio pic till now.

Cruise and Iñárritu are repped by CAA.

'I Thought I Was Going To Die': Miles Teller Reveals Flight Training Devised By Tom Cruise Was No Joke In Top Gun: Maverick

That 'need for speed' was nearly lethal!

Miles Teller in Top Gun: Maverick

Sure, it looked fun to film that breathtaking action-drama Top Gun: Maverick , what with all of the shirtless beach football games , "Great Balls of Fire" piano sing-alongs and glorious mustaches . But star Miles Teller said that getting into the "danger zone" for the high-flying sequel was actually dangerous.

During an interview with LADbible , the actor—who plays Lieutenant Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw, a pilot trainee and the son of Maverick's late BFF Nick "Goose" and Carol Bradshaw, portrayed by Anthony Edwards and Meg Ryan in the original Top Gun movie—discussed how Maverick star Tom Cruise put the cast newcomers through the ringer during their pilot training for the film. It got to the point that Teller actually thought he was "going to die" while filming one specific heart-pounding sequence:

I definitely had a moment where I thought I was going to die. There was a sequence where we were heading straight towards the ground and you do what’s called a max G pull-up. You’re heading down and at the last second you yank up, and it’s really tough for the pilot. It’s something they train in all the time, but it was the first time we’d done a maneuver like that and I completely stopped acting. I looked at the ground and thought this wasn’t going to end well for me.

Despite feeling a "healthy bit of fear," Teller was proud that he was one of the few cast members who didn't have to grab a barf bag mid-flight during the production. (His co-star Lewis Pullman previously revealed that he would throw up during the movie's high-octane jet stunts.) Miles added:

I think when there’s that much adrenaline and a healthy bit of fear, I was able to hold it down. I guess that’s a secret skill I have.

And while the 37-year-old star is more than happy to "have a perfectly good stunt guy" to tackle those really difficult movie maneuvers, he does praise actors like Cruise who do their own stunt work and offer up an "elevated" level of immersion for the viewer:

I think the reason why Tom does this stuff is because when the audience knows that it’s really you and there’s no cutaways, that the level of immersion you get as a viewer, as a voyeur, is elevated. So I’m open to it, but also, I’ve got injured on some films doing some weird things, and when you have a perfectly good stunt guy, I don’t want to put him out of a job, you know? That’s just me being an honest guy.

Given how much of a box office behemoth Top Gun: Maverick was in 2022, a third film is unsurprisingly in the works , with Tom Cruise’s Pete “Maverick” Mitchell  as well as Miles Teller and Glen Powell all expected to return. And there will undoubtedly be even more adrenaline-pumping plane action to come.

In the meantime, you can watch Miles Teller and the rest of the new recruits in Top Gun : Maverick, available to stream with a Paramount Plus subscription .

IT could be a scene from one of his blockbuster Mission: Impossible movies — Tom Cruise flying in cast and crew while chaos unfolds below.

The enterprising star, 61, went into crisis mode as the M25 closes for an entire weekend for the first time.

Tom Cruise has used choppers to fly in cast and crew for filming as the M25 is closed

Filming of his eighth spy flick is taking place near the five-mile stretch between junctions 10 and 11 which was shut from 9pm last night.

Drivers have been warned to expect delays of up to five hours on surrounding roads.

But Tom, 61, is desperate to keep shooting Mission: Impossible 8 at Surrey’s Longcross Studios after being dogged by delays.

The helipad at Battersea, South West London, is among those readied for affected cast and crew.

A source said last night: “The M25 closure is a headache for most people but not for Tom. He is so keen to keep Mission: Impossible 8 in production that he’s got helicopters on standby in London to fly his crew over to Longcross.

“It sounds excessive but delaying work on the film is a bigger problem and Tom is such a professional — he’d move heaven and Earth to keep the show on the road.

“Staff on the movie or stars who are needed for filming have been told if they can’t get to Longcross because of the M25 closures they’ll be flown in by chopper.

“It’s a feat that is just like a scene out of one of Tom’s films.”

Millie Bobby Brown

Millie Bobby Brown , action icon? The actress revealed this week she performed all her own stunts in Netflix’s new film, Damsel .

“I feel like the female version of Tom Cruise ,” Brown declared during a recent appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show . “I did all my own stunts from start to finish.”

Notorious for performing his own death-defying stunts , Cruise famously once said of his action work, “No one asked Gene Kelly, ‘Why do you dance?’”

Tom Cruise’s genius plan to take on the mission impossible that is this weekend’s M25 closure

Tom Cruise in the Mission: Impossible franchise

Tom Cruise appears to have an enterprising solution at hand to this weekend’s M25 travel chaos impacting on Mission: Impossible 8’s cast and crew – fly them in to set via helicopter.

The Hollywood star and avid aviator, 61, is said to have helicopters on standby to help skirt the ‘carmageddon’ expected with massive delays as the M25 has its first-ever daytime closure over the weekend.

A five-mile stretch of the motorway between  junctions 10 and 11 is now shut  in both directions and will remain inaccessible until 6am on Monday while a bridge is demolished and new gantry installed.

Cruise and his cast and crew on the latest action blockbuster, which includes Simon Pegg, Hayley Atwell, Rebecca Ferguson and Hannah Waddingham , are reportedly filming this weekend at Surrey’s Longcross Studios.

The location is just off the M3, close to the M25 closure that has motorists being warned of up to five-hour delays on surrounding roads and the 11.5-mile diversion route.

Producer and Top Gun actor Cruise reportedly has a helipad in Battersea, southwest London, ready to be used to fly any affected cast and crew into set on Surrey, over the motorway.

It’s a spot the qualified pilot has used before , including earlier this month.

‘The M25 closure is a headache for most people but not for Tom. He is so keen to keep Mission: Impossible 8 in production that he’s got helicopters on standby in London to fly his crew over to Longcross,’ a source told The Sun .

‘It sounds excessive but delaying work on the film is a bigger problem and Tom is such a professional – he’d move heaven and Earth to keep the show on the road.’

Mission: Impossible 8 has already been hounded by delays during production thanks to Covid and then last year’s Hollywood actors’ strike, which pushed it from its intended release date in 2024.

‘Staff on the movie or stars who are needed for filming have been told if they can’t get to Longcross because of the M25 closures they’ll be flown in by chopper.’

Unsurprisingly, the observation has been made that it’s ‘a feat that is just like a scene out of one of Tom’s films’.

The upcoming blockbuster, which was recently confirmed to be dropping its intended title of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two, is now eyeing a May 2025 release.

Assuming, of course, that the M25 doesn’t cause any more issues, with a further four daytime closures of the M25 taking place up to September.

Although dates for these have not yet been announced, the next one is expected in April.

The project, due to be completed in summer 2025, will increase the number of lanes at junction 10, one of the UK’s busiest and most dangerous motorway junctions.

METRO GRAPHICS m25 map junctions 10 and 11 closed

Jonathan Wade, project leader at National Highways, yesterday advised motorists to simply stay at home if at all possible .

‘Please, if you can either avoid travelling completely, find something to do at home – decorate the bathroom or something, or play in the garden,’ he told The Independent’s travel podcast.

‘If you must go, travel by train, walk, use a bicycle. I don’t mind really what you do.

‘Avoid driving anywhere around those diversionary routes around Painshill, Byfleet, West Byfleet on the eastern side of Woking. It will be in your interests.’

Cruise and cast including Pegg and Atwell were spotted in Derbyshire over the past few weeks , sparking speculation that parts of the movie were being filmed nearby.

The star then delighted a staff with a surprise visit to Lovage Restaurant in Bakewell between shoots, happily posing for pictures.

Metro.co.uk has contacted a rep for Tom Cruise for comment.
