  • Hide your IP address

Stop using location services

Disable autofill, clear your browsing history, block your cookies, 7 settings you should change in safari to enhance your privacy.

  • If you use Safari on your Mac, iPhone, or iPad, you can enable settings to enhance your privacy while web browsing.
  • You can easily disable cookies, change your search engine to DuckDuckGo, hide your IP address, and more.
  • Here are seven of the top ways to make your online activity more private.

While Apple has allowed alternative browsers on the iPhone and iPad for quite some time, odds are good that if you have one of those devices (or a Mac computer, of course) you frequently use Safari to browse the web. It's relatively safe and private, but you can do much better by tweaking a few settings. Here are seven Safari settings that'll enhance your privacy when you're online.

Almost every step you take online is tracked by websites to target you for ads and to customize your experience. But you can shut most of that down by telling Safari to stop tracking you. On your iPhone or iPad, start the Settings app and then tap Safari . In the Privacy & Security section, enable Prevent Cross-Site Tracking by swiping the button to the right.

On a Mac, start Safari and then click Safari in the menu bar at the top of the screen. Click Preferences in the dropdown menu. In the Preferences window, click the Privacy tab and then click the checkbox for Prevent Cross-Site Tracking .

Google is most people's default, but that search engine fundamentally lacks privacy. If you don't want a large corporation to know your browsing history, switch to DuckDuckGo. On an iPhone or iPad, start the Settings app and then tap Safari . In the Search section, tap Search Engine and choose DuckDuckGo from the options.

If you're using a Mac, start Safari and then click Safari in the menu bar at the top of the screen. Click Preferences in the dropdown menu. In the Preferences window, click the Search tab. Finally, to the right of Search Engine , click the dropdown menu and switch from Google to DuckDuckGo .

Hide your IP address

By default, websites can see your IP address, which can reveal personal details about you including your location. If you prefer, you can hide this from online trackers. On your iPhone or iPad, start the Settings app and then tap Safari . In the Privacy & Security section, tap Hide IP Address and choose From Trackers .

On a Mac, start Safari and then click Safari in the menu bar at the top of the screen. Click Preferences in the dropdown menu. In the Preferences window, click the Privacy tab and then click the checkbox for Hide IP address from trackers .

A lot of your mobile device's secret sauce is based on location services — your iPhone and iPad need to know where you are to make smart suggestions and offer location-based features. But if you don't want Safari to know where you are, it's easy to turn off. On an iPhone or iPad, start the Settings app and then tap Safari . In the Settings for Websites section, tap Location and change the setting to Deny (or, if you want to be asked every time, choose Ask ).

On a Mac, start Safari and then click Safari in the menu bar at the top of the screen. Click Preferences in the dropdown menu. In the Preferences window, click the Websites tab. Choose Location in the pane on the left. At the bottom of the window, configure When visiting other sites by clicking the dropdown menu and choosing Ask or Deny .

Autofill is a great feature if you don't like to enter basic personal information into web forms over and over again, but for that to work, Safari has to record private data. Don't want that? On an iPhone or iPad, start the Settings app and then tap Safari . In the General section, tap Autofill and turn off Use Contact Info and Credit Cards by swiping the buttons to the left.

On a Mac, start Safari and then click Safari in the menu bar at the top of the screen. Click Preferences in the dropdown menu. In the Preferences window, click the AutoFill tab. You can disable autofill data in four categories by clearing the checkboxes.

This one is the traditional, go-to way to enhance your privacy — you can clear your browsing history from time to time to erase records on your device about where you've been online, along with your saved website passwords. On an iPhone or iPad, start the Settings app and then tap Safari . Then scroll down and tap Clear History and Website Data . Conform you want to do that in the popup window.

On a Mac, start Safari and then click History in the menu bar at the top of the screen. Click Clear History in the dropdown menu, choose the timeframe you want from the dropdown menu, and click Clear History .

If you prevent cross-site tracking (see the earlier tip in this article), Safari prevents some third-party cookies. But you can disable all cookies if you want to amp up your privacy — just be aware that your online experience will be less convenient, and some sites won't work properly. To try it on an iPhone or iPad, start the Settings app and then tap Safari . In the Privacy & Security section, enable Block All Cookies by swiping the button to the right.

On a Mac, start Safari and then click Safari in the menu bar at the top of the screen. Click Preferences in the dropdown menu. In the Preferences window, click the Privacy tab. Beside Cookies and website data , click the checkbox for Block all cookies .

How to manage privacy and security settings in Safari on iPhone and iPad

Safari on iPhone 7

Browsing on the internet is something most of us do just about every day, but there is always a slight element of danger, whether it's viruses, identity theft, or getting spoiled for Game of Thrones (DAMN IT).

If you want to have more control over your privacy and security while using Safari on your iPhone or iPad, here's how!

How to prevent cross-site tracking

How to block all cookies in safari, how to request that websites don't track you, how to get warnings about fraudulent websites, how to allow or deny camera and microphone access, how to see if websites have apple pay set up, how to clear your history and website data, how to remove all website data.

Ever been looking at shoes and then shoe ads suddenly pop up on your Facebook feed? That's cross-site tracking and it's a way of monitoring your online behavior to better cater advertising toward you. If you don't like that, then you can turn it off in Safari like this:

  • Launch Settings from your Home screen.
  • Tap Safari . You'll have to scroll down to find it.
  • Tap the switch next to Prevent Cross-Site Tracking . It's down under Privacy & Security .

Cookies are bits of your information that websites store in order to perhaps customize your experience in future or to save login information so that you don't have to constantly input your email address, for example. If you don't want Safari sites to save any of your info, then you can block all cookies like this:

  • Tap the switch next to Block All Cookies . It's down under Privacy & Security .

Adding to the above-mentioned cross-site tracking information, you can also get Safari to send requests to websites asking them not to track your behavior. This is added padding in cross-site tracking prevention.

  • Tap the switch next to Ask Websites Not To Track Me . It's down under Privacy & Security .

Safari can detect when websites are suspicious or may appear fraudulent, and if you enable the setting, you can get a warning before visiting those sites. You can also just hit "Ignore" if you know the site is legit.

  • Tap the switch next to Fraudulent Website Warning . It's down under Privacy & Security . Green is on.

Some websites may want access to your camera and microphone — sites like Facebook — and Safari would therefore need that access. You can completely deny it like this:

  • Tap the switch next to Camera & Microphone Access . It's down under Privacy & Security .

Safari can automatically check to see if the site you're visiting supports Apple Pay. Here's how to enable it:

  • Tap the switch next to Check for Apple Pay . It's down under Privacy & Security .

If you've been looking up J-Law's nudes or scheming on Xmas gifts for the wife and she also uses your phone, you can clear your Safari browsing history, which will also clear out your browsing data like cookies, login information, and more.

  • Tap Clear History and Website Data .
  • Tap Clear History and Data in the pop-up.

If you want to keep your browsing history but want to remove your data from Safari, you can just delete website data, which will remove cookies, login details, and more.

  • Tap Advanced at the bottom of the page.
  • Tap Website Data .
  • Scroll to the bottom and tap Remove All Website Data .
  • Tap Remove Now .

iOS 17 Safari Features: Profiles, Locked Private Browser, Shared Passwords, Updated Tracking Prevention and More

With every update to the iOS operating system, Apple adds new features to the built-in apps like Safari. In iOS 17 , Safari gains new privacy functionality, improvements to search, updated Siri integration, and more.

iOS 17 General Safari Feature

In ‌iOS 17‌, Apple expanded on Tab Groups with a Profile feature that is designed to let you separate your browsing for different use cases. You can create a "Work" profile and a "Personal" profile, for example, so all of your work-related browsing is kept separate from your personal browsing.

ios 17 safari profiles

  • Open up the Settings app.
  • Scroll down to Safari.
  • Tap on New Profile.
  • Select an icon, name, and background color for the profile.
  • Choose your settings for Favorites and Tabs.

From there, you can edit profiles by tapping into them in the Settings app. In Safari, tap on the Tabs icon with two overlapping squares, then tap on the middle icon and choose the "Profile" option to change which profile is active.

Locked Private Browsing Window

Private browsing windows are now locked and require secondary authentication to unlock and access. If you hand your unlocked phone over to someone and they attempt to open your Safari private browsing tab, access will be denied without a second Face ID / Touch ID scan or a passcode.

safari private browsing ios 17

  • Open the Settings app.
  • Tap on Safari.
  • Scroll down to Require ‌Face ID‌ (or ‌Touch ID‌) to Unlock Private Browsing.
  • Tap the toggle to turn it off and confirm with a ‌Face ID‌/‌Touch ID‌ scan. When disabled, the toggle will be gray.

Private Search Engine

In iOS 16 you can choose a default search engine to use with Safari, but in ‌iOS 17‌, you can choose separate search engines for standard browsing and private browsing.

ios 17 private search engine

  • Tap on Private Search Engine.
  • Tap on one of the Search Engine options to select it.
  • Exit out of the Settings.

Tracking URLs

URLs in ‌iOS 17‌ can be stripped of all tracking information appended to the end of the URL so that websites cannot track your browsing using URL identifiers. This function is enabled automatically for private browsing in ‌iOS 17‌, but it can be turned on for all browsing.

safari tracking all browsing ios 17

  • Tap on Advanced.
  • Tap on Advanced Tracking and Fingerprinting Protection.
  • Toggle on "All Browsing."

Turning this on will ensure that all URLs opened in Safari will strip the additional tracking information that's sometimes pasted on to the end of a URL.

Hide IP Address From Websites

In ‌iOS 17‌, there is an option to hide IP address from both trackers and websites or only trackers when using the iCloud Private Relay feature. With Trackers and Websites selected, IP address will be kept cloaked and websites will not be able to determine your location using that information.

ios 17 safari hide ip address

Search Improvements

Search is more responsive in ‌iOS 17‌, so it brings up search results more quickly. It also brings up a wider range of search suggestions for you to choose from.

ios 17 safari search

Listen to Page

‌Siri‌ in ‌iOS 17‌ can read a website to you, which is useful if you come across a long-form article or other content that you want to listen to while you do something else. The feature works as long as Reader View is available on a website.

ios 17 safari listen to page

  • Open up Safari.
  • Navigate to the content that you want ‌Siri‌ to read.
  • Tap on the Aa icon in the address bar.
  • Select the Listen to Page option.

From there, ‌Siri‌ will begin to read the content on the page. You can pause by tapping on the Pause Listening option, and resume with the Resume Listening option. If you lock your display, you will get dedicated playback controls.

‌Siri‌ will also read a page if you open up a website to a selected article and ask ‌Siri‌ to "Read this to me."

Shared Passwords and Passkeys

In ‌iOS 17‌ (and iPadOS 17 / macOS Sonoma ) there is an option to securely share passwords and passkeys with friends and family members. With the sharing feature, passwords for shared media accounts, utilities, bills, and more can be provided to multiple people.

ios 17 shared passwords

This is not strictly a Safari feature, but it does make logging into sites where you use shared login information simpler.

Privacy Settings

Note that privacy-focused settings that include Block All Cookies, Privacy Preserving Ad Measurement, and Check for Apple Pay have been relocated from the "Privacy & Security" section of the Safari settings to the "Advanced" section, which is more hidden.

How to Disable Website Previews in Safari to Boost Your Security

Disabling website previews in Safari stops potentially harmful sites loading content, which can boost your online security.

Safari on the iPhone, iPad, and Mac lets you preview a link without leaving your current page, just to see what lurks behind it. Although enabled by default, this feature can be bad for security. The preview loads as if you clicked the article, which could trigger a dangerous website.

Follow along to learn how to stop Safari browser from loading website previews on your Apple devices. With this disabled, you’ll be able to view the URL for links instead, to check they’re safe before loading them.

How to Disable Safari Previews on an iPhone or iPad

To preview a website in Safari for iOS or iPadOS, touch and hold a link to load a preview and open the contextual menu. From there, you can tap the preview to follow the link and navigate away from your current page.

Turning off website previews will ensure a potentially harmful destination won’t load unless specifically clicked. To do this, touch and hold a URL to preview it, then select Hide preview in the upper-right corner. (This option is easy to overlook as it doesn’t look like a standard button at all.)

This will hide website previews for all future links on this device. Touching and holding a link will now display the actual URL instead of the preview. To re-enable the preview, choose Tap to show preview in the menu’s upper-left corner. Toggling website previews is one of several tips and tricks to improve Safari .

How to Turn Off Safari Previews on a Mac

If your Mac trackpad supports the Force Touch function , force-click a link in Safari to preview it without leaving your current page. You can even scroll web content in the preview like you would in a normal Safari window! If your Mac doesn’t support this, you can preview links using the Look up data detectors shortcut, which is usually linked to a three-finger-tap.

Unfortunately, disabling website previews requires turning the off this shortcut. Launch System Preferences , choose Trackpad , and select the Point & Click tab. Deselect the box next to Look up data detectors .

If you want to view the URL for a link without previewing it, you can Control-click a link and choose Copy Link from the menu to copy the URL to the clipboard. From there, paste the link to Safari’s address bar or Spotlight to look at it. Alternatively, just hover over a link in Safari and the destination URL appears at the bottom of the window (you may need to turn on the status bar feature by choosing Show Status Bar from Safari’s View menu).

Why Website Previews Are Bad for Security

The security implications of website previews shouldn’t be overlooked. Seeing where a link takes you without leaving the current context saves you time, but it also introduces a dangerous new attack vector. And with that in mind, I wholeheartedly recommend you to increase your web-browsing security by turning off website previews in Safari. As always, you’ll need to determine for yourself whether losing that functionality is a worthy tradeoff.

locked iphone How To Turn Off or Disable Restrictions Enabled on an iPhone

iPhones offer a feature called “Restricted Mode” that allows owners to set limitations on various functionalities. However, you may reach a point where you desire a more unrestricted experience. If you find yourself in that situation, you’ve come to the right place. It’s time to break free!

Restricted Mode on your iPhone provides you with control over your device, enhancing safety and suitability for different scenarios. It is like having a personalized rulebook that aligns with your needs and offers protection.

However, as our needs evolve over time, what once worked and catered to our requirements may no longer suffice. If you’re seeking to turn off Restricted Mode on your iPhone, you may encounter challenges. If that’s the case, you’re in the right spot. Keep reading to receive step-by-step instructions, along with essential tips and tricks on how to turn off the restrictions on your iPhone.

Restricted Mode on iPhone: What It Is

On an iPhone, Restricted Mode is a built-in feature that allows iPhone owners to impose limitations and restrictions on the device’s functionality. This feature strives to create a safer and more controlled user experience. You can specifically utilize this feature in situations where you need to restrict access to specific content or features.

Restricted Mode is akin to having a personalized set of rules or limitations for your iPhone. It empowers you to control and manage the actions and capabilities of your iPhone or a third-party iPhone. This guarantees enhanced safety and suitability for various scenarios.

For instance, as a parent, you can utilize Restricted Mode to establish parental controls. If you have younger siblings or children using your iPhone, you can restrict their access. You can block explicit content, prevent the installation of specific apps, and manage their screen time. This way, you can ensure that they utilize the iPhone in a manner appropriate for their age.

Additionally, in educational settings such as schools or colleges, the Restricted Mode can foster a better learning environment. Teachers can restrict access to distracting apps or websites that may contain inappropriate content. This guarantees that everyone remains focused and utilizes their iPhones solely for educational purposes.

Why Are Restrictions Enabled on My iPhone?

Let’s explore some of the reasons why your iPhone may have restrictions enabled on it:

  • Parental Control : If you are a child or teenager using an iPhone provided by your parents or guardians, they may have activated restrictions on your device. These restrictions, known as parental controls, aim to manage screen time, control access to specific apps or content, and create a safer digital environment tailored to your needs.
  • School Policies : If you utilize your iPhone in an educational setting, such as a school or college, restrictions may be in effect based on the institution’s policies. Typically, these restrictions aim to minimize distractions, ensure access to appropriate content, and foster a learning-focused environment.
  • Workplace policies : If an organization manages your iPhone, it may enforce restrictions to comply with security measures and regulate device usage within the organization. This practice is common in corporate environments or institutions that provide devices to their employees or students.

Whatever it is, it’s important to understand that the device owner or administrator usually enables restrictions on your iPhone for specific purposes. These purposes may include ensuring safety, promoting productivity, or maintaining compliance with policies or regulations.

Why Can’t I Turn Off Restriction Mode on My iPhone?

There are several possible reasons why you might be unable to turn off Restricted Mode on your iPhone. Here are some of them:

  • You forgot the Restricted Mode passcode : If you have forgotten the passcode for Restricted Mode, you will need to enter the passcode to make any changes to the restrictions settings. Without inputting the passcode, you will be unable to switch off Restricted Mode.
  • Parental Controls : If a parent or guardian manages your iPhone using the Screen Time or Family Sharing features, they may have enabled restrictions on your device. In such cases, you should contact them and request that they disable the restrictions for you.
  • Software Updates : Occasionally, a software bug or glitch in the iOS may affect your ability to turn off Restricted Mode. To address this, make sure to keep your iPhone’s software up to date by installing the latest iOS updates. This can help resolve such issues and improve functionality.
  • Factory Restrictions : In very rare cases, if you have purchased a secondhand or refurbished iPhone, you might come across built-in hardware or software restrictions that cannot be disabled. Manufacturers or sellers typically implement these restrictions to comply with specific regulations or contractual obligations.

Now that you have an understanding of the reasons that can make it challenging to remove your iPhone from Restricted Mode, let’s delve into how you can actually disable Restricted Mode on your iPhone despite these circumstances. Additionally, I will provide guidance on removing your iPhone from Restricted Mode, even if you have forgotten the passcode.

How To Turn Off Restricted Mode on Your iPhone Using Passcode

If you can remember your iPhone’s Restricted Mode passcode, you can easily turn off this feature from the Settings app. If you are using iOS 12 or a later version, you will need to utilize the Screen Time feature instead of Restricted Mode. Here’s how to turn off Restricted Mode on your iPhone from the Settings app:

For iOS 11 or Earlier Versions

  • On the Home page, open the Settings app.
  • Tap on the Restriction option.
  • Next, select the Turn Off Restriction option.
  • You will be prompted to enter the passcode to turn it off and input the passcode.

Once you enter the correct passcode, your iPhone’s Restricted Mode will be disabled. This will allow you to use your device without any limitations.

For iOS 12 or Later Versions

What should you do if you no longer remember your iPhone’s Restricted Mode passcode? If you remember your Apple ID passcode but have forgotten the Restricted Mode passcode, there’s no need to worry. You can easily disable Restricted Mode on your iPhone by using your Apple ID passcode . Here’s how to do it:

  • On your iPhone’s Home page, Open the Settings app.
  • Navigate to and tap on Screen Time.

How to Turn off a Restrictions-Enabled iPhone change screen time passcode

  • You will then be required to Enter New Screen Time Passcode and verify it. Now that you have changed your passcode, use your new passcode to turn off Restricted Mode.

Frequently Asked Questions

The reason you are unable to access over 18 sites on your iPhone is most likely because of the restrictions or content filters configured on your device. These restrictions aim to enhance the safety of your browsing experience, particularly for younger iPhone owners. To gain access to over 18 sites, you may need to modify the restriction settings on your iPhone or reach out to the device owner or administrator for assistance.

Regrettably, you cannot disable Restricted Mode on your iPhone directly. Typically, the device owner or administrator activates Restricted Mode for specific purposes, such as implementing parental controls, workplace restrictions, or ensuring organizational compliance. If you wish to turn off Restricted Mode, I’ll recommend that you contact the individual who established the restrictions, such as the device owner or administrator.

To do this, follow these instructions: Tap on Screen Time in your iPhone’s Settings . Select Content & Privacy Restrictions . Scroll down and tap on iTunes & App Store Purchases . Tap on Require Password under the Purchases and In-App Purchases section. Select Don’t Require to turn off the requirement for parental approval on app downloads and purchases.

If you encounter a situation where Restricted Mode appears to be stuck on your device, two common reasons can explain this issue. First, the device owner or administrator, such as parents or guardians, may have enabled Restricted Mode to impose limitations on content access. Secondly, a software glitch or bug might be responsible for the unresponsiveness of Restricted Mode. In such a situation, attempting potential solutions like restarting your device or updating to the latest iOS version can help resolve the issue.

Learning how to turn off restrictions on your iPhone can provide a liberating experience, granting you increased control and freedom over your device. By taking charge of your iPhone’s restrictions, you can customize your device to align with your preferences, enhance productivity, and embrace a more personalized digital experience.

However, it is important to always respect the guidelines and restrictions set by parents, employers, or organizations when necessary. Engaging in open communication with the device owner or administrator can help you gain a deeper understanding of the reasons behind the restrictions and facilitate negotiations for adjustments that accommodate everyone’s needs.

Apart from enabling Restricted Mode, there are several other practical ways to protect your child on the internet. You may want to explore Tom Victor’s guide on how to safeguard your child from online predators on a Mac.

How to Prevent/Remove Pop-Up virus notifications on macOS Ventura

I am smart enough not to fall for these pop-up virus notifications, but they are a nuisance and I want to stop them.

They appear on my upper right screen and resemble the System Settings gear. I received 10 last night and deleted them. Just now, I had one appear and then slide off the screen to the right.

I am running on macOS Ventura version 13.3.1 using Safari as my browser.

Thanks for any advice.

not what he is asking for, it is a fake notification, it isn't apple, it is malware of some sort trying to get you to buy protection, says you have malware, says you have virus and says your Mac is infected. ive had this happen before, you have got to go deep in configurations and remove 3 or 4 files that a website installed on MBPro

How to make your iPhone go faster

I t’s hard to be patient with a slow iPhone , especially when using it for everything, from the calculator to getting directions on Maps. No one likes dealing with lag, buffering, or app freezing. Fortunately, there are a few ways you could speed up your iPhone.

Restart your iPhone

Let’s start with the classic “Did you try turning it off and on again?” It’s a classic for a reason, not just another tech myth. On a technical level, it helps refresh your iPhone’s RAM or working memory, which optimizes its overall performance. Since it’s probably the most straightforward hack, I’d recommend starting with this one.

There are slightly different ways to restart an iPhone based on its model. If you can’t get yours to restart, you might want to do a quick “how to restart [your iPhone model]” search. In case you’re unsure about your iPhone’s model, we have a guide for that , too.

Clear Safari Data

I’m sure we have encountered an ‘Accept Cookies’ popup. Even if you have no idea what that does, you’ve probably accepted tons of cookies by now. Refer to this helpful guide for a detailed and easy lesson on internet cookies. For the scope of this piece, all you need to know is that every time you click on ‘Accept Cookies’ on your browser, you’re putting a bunch of files on your device. These files pile up over time and end up slowing your phone.

If you frequently use Safari on your iPhone, you probably have a lot of passwords, cookies, tabs, and other login info in your Safari cache. It’s a good habit to clear that from time to time. Note that this will require re-entering login credentials or other personal info on some sites since clearing your cache will make your Safari brand new again.

To clear all Safari data, go to Settings on your iPhone and look up ‘Safari.’ Once in the Safari menu, scroll down until you see ‘Clear History and Website Data.’ It will ask you to pick a timeframe. Select ‘All history’ and then hit the red button at the bottom that says ‘Clear History.’

Free Up Space

Full storage is one of the leading causes of a sluggish iPhone. Go to Settings , scroll to General , and click on iPhone Storage from the menu. Doing so will present you with a stacked bar chart and an ordered list of your iPhone’s storage situation, clearly labeling how much space is occupied by which app.

It will also provide you with recommendations on how to free up space. Under Recommendations , click on Review Large Attachments to see the photos, videos, and attachments that are taking up the most space. When you see something you want to delete, swipe left and hit Delete .

There are other ways to free up space on your iPhone, but it ultimately depends on your priorities and your phone use. If you don’t always need all your photos and videos on your phone, you can back them up on iCloud and delete them from your iPhone. However, this would mean you would no longer be able to access them without the internet.

Similarly, if you don’t need all your iMessages, you can mass-delete them. I’ll review all the ways to clear storage on your iPhone in a separate, dedicated guide.

iOS updates often bring bug fixes that help improve your iPhone’s efficiency, so it’s a good idea to always be on the latest software update. You can do that by turning automatic updates on. Go to Settings > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates and turn on the toggle switch for all three options on the page. This will automatically download and install iOS software updates when your phone is connected to Wi-Fi, charging, and locked.

You can also manually update your iOS. A ‘Software Update Available’ notice on your Settings app under your Apple ID will tell you there’s a newer version you haven’t yet updated to. If you see that, scroll down to General > Software Update and click Download and Install to begin the update. If you don’t see that notice, you’re on the latest version.

Replace Battery

Another possible reason for a slow phone is a battery overused to the point of dysfunction. If your iPhone is old, its battery’s health may not be ideal. To see if that’s the case, go to Settings, look up Battery Health, and click on Battery Health & Charging from the open menu. Anything 80% and above is good, but Apple recommends replacing your battery when its health falls below that mark.

Turn Off Automatic Downloads and Background App Refresh

Apps on your iPhone tend to auto-update. While this is helpful, it could become overwhelming for your phone, especially if you have many apps on it. Multiple background app refreshes also take place without you knowing. Again, this is a helpful feature, but it could lead to a considerable drop in your phone’s efficiency if you have many apps that constantly refresh and update.

Go to Settings > App Store and turn off all three toggle switches under ‘Automatic Downloads.’ These are App Downloads, App Updates, and In-App Content. Then, go to General > Background App Refresh > Background App Refresh (again) and choose Off . Doing both will ensure no power-hungry apps are running in the background. If you’d like an app updated, you can constantly manually update it in the App Store.

No, closing your background apps won’t help.

I know; I felt as deceived as you did when Gizmodo Maxwell Zeff told us that closing background apps doesn’t do anything and that I have been making my poor little thumb do all that labor for years for nothing. It’s just a tech myth that originated years ago on Apple’s community forum and Stack Overflow and has been perpetuated ever since (because it sounds like it should work!). But yeah, doing that won’t affect either performance or battery.

Are some of your apps still running slow?

Are you sure it’s your phone and not your network? People often mistake a slow connection for a slow phone. Especially if you’re experiencing lag on apps that require an internet connection, it might just be your internet that needs fixing.

To quickly check this, look up ‘speed test’ on your browser. You’ll see an ‘Internet speed test’ pop-up. Hit the blue button that says ‘run speed test.’ In around 30 seconds, you’ll get precise stats on your download and upload speeds and a comment on your internet performance.

I just ran mine, and it said, “Your Internet connection is very fast. It should be able to handle multiple devices streaming HD videos, video conferencing, and gaming at the same time.” So, if my iPhone starts acting up, I’d know it’s not my internet.

Introduction

Unlinking Safari from your Mac and iPhone can be a crucial step in managing your browsing data and privacy. While Safari's syncing feature is convenient for keeping your browsing history, bookmarks, and tabs consistent across devices, there are times when you may want to disable this synchronization. Whether you're transitioning to a new browser, addressing privacy concerns, or simply seeking a fresh start, the process of unlinking Safari from your Mac and iPhone is straightforward.

By following the steps outlined in this guide, you can effectively disable Safari sync and ensure that your browsing activities are no longer shared between your Mac and iPhone. This can be particularly beneficial if you're looking to maintain separate browsing experiences on each device or if you're concerned about the security of your browsing data.

In the following sections, we'll delve into the specific steps required to unlink Safari from your Mac and iPhone. By carefully following these instructions, you'll be able to regain control over your browsing data and tailor your online experience to your preferences. Let's proceed with the first step: turning off Safari sync on your Mac.

Step 1: Turn off Safari Sync on Mac

To begin the process of unlinking Safari from your Mac and iPhone, the first step involves turning off Safari sync on your Mac. This action will effectively halt the synchronization of browsing data between your Mac and iPhone, allowing for independent browsing experiences on each device.

Open Safari Preferences : Launch the Safari browser on your Mac and navigate to the "Safari" menu located in the top-left corner of the screen. From the dropdown menu, select "Preferences" to access the settings for Safari.

Navigate to the "General" Tab : Within the Preferences window, click on the "General" tab. This section houses various settings related to Safari's general behavior and features.

Disable Safari Sync : Locate the "Safari" tab within the General settings and uncheck the box next to "Safari" to disable the synchronization of browsing data. This action effectively turns off Safari sync on your Mac, preventing the automatic sharing of browsing history, bookmarks, and tabs with your iPhone.

Confirm the Changes : After disabling Safari sync, it's essential to confirm the changes by closing the Preferences window. This ensures that the updated settings are applied and that Safari will no longer synchronize data with your iPhone.

By following these steps, you have successfully turned off Safari sync on your Mac, effectively breaking the link between your Mac and iPhone in terms of browsing data synchronization. With Safari sync disabled on your Mac, you can proceed to the next step, which involves turning off Safari sync on your iPhone to complete the unlinking process.

Step 2: Turn off Safari Sync on iPhone

Disabling Safari sync on your iPhone is the final step in unlinking Safari from your Mac and iPhone, allowing for independent browsing experiences on each device. By turning off Safari sync on your iPhone, you ensure that your browsing history, bookmarks, and tabs are no longer automatically shared with your Mac, providing greater control over your browsing data and privacy.

Here's a detailed guide on how to turn off Safari sync on your iPhone:

Access Settings : Unlock your iPhone and locate the "Settings" app on the home screen. The Settings app is represented by a gear icon and serves as the central hub for configuring various aspects of your device.

Navigate to Your Apple ID : Within the Settings app, tap on your Apple ID profile at the top of the screen. This will grant you access to a range of settings and preferences associated with your Apple ID and iCloud account.

Select iCloud Settings : Scroll down within the Apple ID settings and tap on "iCloud." This section houses the synchronization settings for various Apple services, including Safari, which is used to sync browsing data across devices.

Disable Safari Sync : Within the iCloud settings, locate the "Safari" option and toggle the switch to turn it off. By disabling Safari sync in this manner, you effectively halt the synchronization of browsing history, bookmarks, and tabs between your iPhone and other linked devices.

Confirm the Changes : After turning off Safari sync, it's important to confirm the changes by exiting the iCloud settings. This ensures that the updated synchronization settings are applied and that Safari will no longer share browsing data with your Mac.

By following these steps, you have successfully turned off Safari sync on your iPhone, completing the process of unlinking Safari from your Mac and iPhone. With Safari sync disabled on both your Mac and iPhone, you can now enjoy separate and independent browsing experiences on each device, tailored to your individual preferences and privacy considerations.

This concludes the process of unlinking Safari from your Mac and iPhone, empowering you to manage your browsing data and privacy with greater control and flexibility. Whether you're seeking to maintain distinct browsing experiences on each device or address privacy concerns, the ability to disable Safari sync provides a valuable means of customizing your online interactions to align with your preferences and priorities.

In conclusion, the process of unlinking Safari from your Mac and iPhone offers a valuable opportunity to take control of your browsing data and privacy. By following the outlined steps to disable Safari sync on both your Mac and iPhone, you can effectively establish independent browsing experiences on each device, tailored to your individual preferences and privacy considerations.

The decision to unlink Safari may stem from various motivations, including the desire to maintain separate browsing experiences on different devices, address privacy concerns, or transition to alternative browsers. Regardless of the specific reasons, the ability to disable Safari sync empowers users to customize their online interactions in alignment with their preferences and priorities.

By turning off Safari sync on your Mac, you break the automatic sharing of browsing history, bookmarks, and tabs with your iPhone, ensuring that each device operates independently in terms of browsing data. This level of control is particularly valuable for individuals who seek to compartmentalize their browsing activities or safeguard their privacy by preventing the automatic synchronization of sensitive data between devices.

Similarly, disabling Safari sync on your iPhone further solidifies the independence of your browsing experiences, allowing you to curate your browsing data and preferences without the constraints of automatic synchronization. This step is instrumental in ensuring that your browsing history, bookmarks, and tabs remain exclusive to your iPhone, providing a heightened sense of privacy and autonomy in managing your online activities.

The process of unlinking Safari from your Mac and iPhone underscores the significance of user agency and control in the digital realm. By offering the flexibility to customize synchronization settings and tailor browsing experiences to individual needs, Apple empowers users to make informed choices regarding their online privacy and data management.

In essence, the ability to unlink Safari from your Mac and iPhone represents a proactive approach to managing your digital footprint and personal data. Whether driven by privacy considerations, organizational preferences, or a desire for distinct browsing experiences, the process of disabling Safari sync serves as a practical tool for aligning your online interactions with your unique requirements and priorities.

Ultimately, by embracing the option to unlink Safari from your Mac and iPhone, you assert your autonomy in shaping your digital experiences, fostering a greater sense of control and customization in managing your browsing data and privacy.

Videos show terrifying moment bull elephant lifts safari truck

The safari guide who warded off the elephant was praised by wildlife experts.

Frightened tourists can be seen ducking between seats during a tense standoff between a bull elephant and a safari truck in Pilanesberg National Park, South Africa.

Videos of Monday’s incident show a bull elephant lifting the 22-seat truck up several times with his trunk before letting it drop. The driver can be heard calling for the elephant to "go away" and slapping his hand against the side of the truck to scare away the animal.

Hendry Blom, a bystander who caught the incident on camera, told ABC News: "We were definitely scared, especially for the people in the truck because we thought they might die."

Another video from inside the truck shows frightened tourists cowering on the floor of the vehicle. One woman can be heard praying as the elephant approaches.

Poncho Mogodiri, field operations manager of Mankwe Game Trackers, the tour company involved in the incident, told ABC News the guide and guests were in animal hide when the bull elephant approached. "Hides provide you with the rare opportunity to unobtrusively view the wildlife and birds at close quarters," according to Pilanesberg National Park.

Mogodiri said some of the tourists "came too close to the elephant to take pictures and he started getting aggressive."

The guide's actions -- revving the engine, slamming car doors and shouting to ward the elephant away -- have been widely praised by wildlife experts. Mogodiri said the guide reacted "by the book."

"Anyone that’s worked with elephants will tell you when a bull like that charges, you don’t turn and run, you need to make as much noise and stand your ground," said Ron Magill, communications director at Zoo Miami.

Mogodiri confirmed the bull was in musth, or when an elephant "experiences an increase in reproductive hormones and becomes highly aggressive," according to the Pilanesberg National Park website.

No one was injured in the incident, though Mankwe Game Trackers told ABC News one family had been offered counseling after being left "extremely rattled." The Pilanesberg National Park said it will be conducting an internal investigation of the incident.
