Chelsea pre-season 2023/24: Fixtures and schedule

  • Mauricio Pochettino takes charge of first Chelsea pre-season
  • Blues will travel to the US to face Wrexham, Newcastle and Borussia Dortmund
  • Club finished 12th in Premier League last season

Mauricio Pochettino will take charge of his first pre-season as Chelsea boss

Todd Boehly's unprecedented cash influx is yet to pay dividends in west London, with three managers (four if you count brief interim Bruno Saltor) succumbing under the American's watch. Now, it's Mauricio Pochettino's turn.

2022/23 was Chelsea's least productive campaign of the Premier League era as they finished 12th with a poultry 44 points. Despite the seemingly endless stream of cash at the club's disposal, Poch's task is a mammoth one. The Blues' squad last season, while talented, was woefully unbalanced and it's going to take more than the current transfer window to sort things out.

Nevertheless, as is the case for every new manager, pre-season is significant for Pochettino. Here's what we know about Chelsea's summer plans so far.

Where are Chelsea going for 2023/24 pre-season?

LONDON CALLING! Chelsea are coming to the USA! 🇺🇸 The Blues kick-off their 2023 pre-season tour with 3 games across the @PremierLeague Summer Series! Further fixtures and locations to be announced. 👀 — Chelsea FC (@ChelseaFC) April 11, 2023

Chelsea confirmed earlier this year they would travel to the United States to compete in the new Premier League Summer Series .

The Blues have frequently visited the US in the past, including last summer, and they'll be one of six clubs competing in a brand new pre-season event that will take place across five major East Coast cities.

However, their first unofficial game under Pochettino was a 5-0 thrashing of National League champions Wrexham , where Ian Maatsen netted twice and new signing Christopher Nkunku also got on the scoresheet.

In their first Summer Series game, Chelsea were triumphant 4-3 over Roberto De Zerbi's Brighton as Nicolas Jackson provided a glimpse of his potential, scoring once and setting up two more. Nkunku, Mykhailo Mudryk and Conor Gallagher also struck after Brighton, who had defender Jan Paul van Hecke sent off, had taken the lead through Danny Welbeck. Joao Pedro's penalty and another late effort from Deniz Undaz ran the Blues close until full time.

Chelsea also take on fellow Premier League outfits Newcastle and Fulham as part of the tournament. They round off their trip to the US with a clash with Borussia Dortmund in Chicago.

Chelsea confirm 29-man squad for USA pre-season tour

Chelsea confirm 29-man squad for USA pre-season tour

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has named the 29 players he wants to work with during the team’s pre-season tour in the United States.

The Chelsea players have departed for Los Angeles, where they will spend the next week for a summer training camp, on Saturday.

Among last season’s first team members (Romelu Lukaku and Saul Niguez excluded), only N’Golo Kante and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have not made the travelling squad due to their vaccination status.

Several returning loanees; Conor Gallagher, Billy Gilmour, Ethan Ampadu, Michy Batshuayi, Emerson, Tino Anjorin, and Levi Colwill, also made the cut.

Unfortunately, Ian Maatsen and Dujon Sterling, who took part in during pre-season at Cobham, did not get picked by Tuchel.

The manager, however, has included two academy stars; young goalkeeper, Teddy Sharman-Lowe and versatile midfielder, Harvey Vale.

There were other academy players involved in pre-season in the last week, such as Charlie Webster and Lewis Hall, but were not selected but Tuchel for the tour.

Chelsea announce Wrexham friendly on United States pre-season tour

Chelsea have confirmed they will once again face Wrexham as part of their 2024/25 pre-season tour of the United States.

This will be the third successive summer Chelsea have spent in the United States and the second straight year in which they have clashed with Wrexham. The Blues emerged with a 5-0 win last summer thanks to goals from Ian Maatsen (2), Conor Gallagher, Christopher Nkunku and Ben Chilwell.

This time around, Chelsea will head to Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California on Wednesday, July 24, to take on their famous Welsh opponents.

Chelsea chief executive officer Chris Jurasek said: "It is great to be playing Wrexham once again, following the success of last year's encounter in Chapel Hill. We look forward to playing in front of our loyal supporters based in California at the Levi's Stadium, which is sure to create a wonderful atmosphere.

"We are also really excited to be returning to Atlanta this summer as part of our pre-season tour. Mercedes-Benz Stadium is a truly remarkable venue, and we cannot wait to play there again in front of our US fanbase when we come up against Club America."

Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson added: "We’re looking forward to returning to the United States for our summer tour, and the match at Levi's Stadium against Chelsea promises to be an exciting and memorable occasion – as well as an important part of our pre-season preparations.

"It was a great privilege to meet fans in the US last summer, and we're excited to see more of our passionate supporters in San Francisco in July."

The Athletic report that Chelsea are also set to take on Manchester City as part of their pre-season tour, with Premier League teams prioritising games in the United States. Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United have all confirmed games against one another in North America.

pre season tour for chelsea

After an underwhelming campaign that saw them finish 12th last season, Chelsea will be eager to set things right in the 2023-24 Premier League season.

They will be eager to get a good pre-season under their belt ahead of the start of their league campaign .

The Blues are slated to kickstart their pre-season 2023 tour in America with a friendly against newly-promoted League Two side Wrexham at the Kenan Memorial Stadium in Chapel Hill, North Carolina on Wednesday, July 19.

Soon after their friendly against Wrexham, Chelsea have three pre-season games lined up against Premier League outfits.

The first of these pre-season games against their Premier League rivals will see Chelsea taking on Brighton, who finished sixth in the standings last season and will prove to be a good test for the Blues.

Chelsea are set to face the Seagulls at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia on Saturday, July 22.

Next up for Chelsea is a friendly encounter against UEFA Champions League-bound Newcastle United at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on Thursday, July 27.

Chelsea’s fourth friendly in their 2023 pre-season tour in America pits them against their west London rivals Fulham at FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland on Sunday, July 30.

The two-time UEFA Champions League winner’s final pre-season game is slated to take place at Solider Field, Chicago on Wednesday, August 2 against German giants Borussia Dortmund.

The Blues will be hoping that their squad can make the most of these friendly games and that their players can gel after a summer overhaul that saw plenty of players leave the club, while a few additions were also made.

In terms of incomings, former RB Leipzig attacker Christopher Nkunku has already joined Chelsea and will be a part of their pre-season tour.

Chelsea’s list of departures is a lot longer with Joao Felix, Denis Zakaria, N’Golo Kante, Kalidou Koulibaly, Mateo Kovacic, Edouard Mendy, and Kai Havertz, all no longer with the club.

Chelsea have announced their 29-man squad ahead of the pre-season tour of America. The Blues and their head coach, Mauricio Pochettino, depart for the United States ahead of matches against Wrexham, Brighton, Fulham and Borussia Dortmund.

Having sold or released more than ten members of their first-team squad from last season, Chelsea are taking a young group of players with them to America as they prepare for the 2023/24 season under new management. Summer signings Nicolas Jackson and Christopher Nkunku have been included in the touring party, as have a host of young stars.

Wesley Fofana, Benoit Badiashile, Armando Broja and Marcus Bettinelli were all left out with injuries being assessed while recovery is planned. Reece James reported as ill and did not travel out of precaution, the club say.

Chelsea have welcomed back a group of returning loanees ready to prove their worth to Pochettino and the Argentine has granted them a chance to impress. Levi Colwill, Ian Maatsen and Andrey Santos have all been selected for the tour while Callum Hudson-Odoi has been left out.

The winger spent last season on loan at Bayer Leverkusen and failed to make the desired impact. He is now set for a move away from the club with Fulham and Nottingham Forest amongst the interest clubs. Elsewhere, there was no place for Romelu Lukaku, Hakim Ziyech or Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

The trio are all surplus to requirements and had been granted extra time away from Cobham in order to find a move away. Lukaku has been at the centre of the most attention with large wages to shift and a hefty price tag still on his head. The Belgian isn't expected to be part of Pochettino's plans next season but has so far been unable to find a new home.

Inter have now reportedly dropped out of the running for him, leaving Juventus of a move to Saudi Arabia on the cards. Ziyech himself was close to a transfer to the Saudi Pro League before issues in his medical delayed such a deal.

Badiashile misses out with the hamstring injury he picked up towards the end of last season. football.london understands that Badiashile is targeting the star t of the new campaign for when he returns to action as he continues to do gym work behind the scenes at Cobham to ensure just that.

There was no room for fellow Under-21 starlet Omari Hutchinson or Harvey Vale as they miss out on selection with the expectation that both players find a loan to aid their development. Cesare Casadei has been given a chance to show himself to Pochettino in action despite heavy links to Leicester.

Academy duo Bashir Humphreys and Alfie Gilchrist are in the group after training for the past fortnight in Surrey, as Malo Gusto following his own return from loan at Lyon in the second half of the season.

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Eddie Beach is included in the squad. football.london understands the Blues have decided to keep the youngster around the first team before assessing his situation in January .

Full squad:

Goalkeepers: Kepa Arrizabalaga, Gabriel Slonina, Eddie Beach, Jamie Cumming, Lucas Bergstrom,

Defenders: Thiago Silva, Malo Gusto, Alfie Gilchrist, Bashir Humphreys, Ben Chilwell, Marc Cucurella, Ian Maatsen, Trevoh Chalobah, Levi Colwill

Midfielders: Conor Gallagher, Enzo Fernandez, Andrey Santos, Cesare Casadei, Carney Chukwuemeka, Lewis Hall

Forwards. Nicolas Jackson, Raheem Sterling, Noni Madueke, Mykhailo Mudryk, Christopher Nkunku, Mason Burstow, Diego Moreira, Angelo Gabriel, Dujuan Richards (training only)

Liverpool pre-season 2024: New friendly confirmed for USA tour as date and location announced

Liverpool will be returning to the US this summer and another friendly has been announced too. The fixtures will be the first without JĂĽrgen Klopp, who is leaving.

Liverpool has confirmed another pre-season friendly fixture in the USA this summer, with the Reds set to take on the Spanish outfit Real Betis in Pittsburgh. Under a new manager who will take over from JĂĽrgen Klopp, Liverpool is set to head to the US for the first time in five years.

The US trip, which already included matches against Manchester United and Arsenal, was confirmed in February. The last time that Liverpool headed Stateside was the summer of 2019, just after the Reds had become European champions for the sixth time. Since then, a combination of Covid and then commercial opportunities in Asia have meant that they have not gone back until now.

In 2019, Liverpool played against Borussia Dortmund , Sevilla and Sporting CP in New York, Boston and Indiana. The Reds played on the west coast of the US during Klopp's first summer in charge back in 2016 with friendly fixtures against Chelsea , AC Milan and AS Roma.

This time, Liverpool was already confirmed to be playing Arsenal on Wednesday, July 31 in Philadelphia and then Manchester United in South Carolina on Saturday, August 3, meaning the Reds are staying on the east coast of the US. Now, the extra game has been penciled in for Friday, July 26.

The match against Real Betis will be staged at the Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh. The new manager will also be able to use the time in the US to continue preparations for the new season on the training field.

"Adding Pittsburgh to our pre-season tour schedule is a great way to start our eagerly anticipated return to the USA," Ben Latty, the club's commercial director, said, via the official website . "We were delighted to quickly sell out our fixtures against Arsenal and Manchester United on this tour and are equally excited to be able to offer our supporters in the States another opportunity to see Liverpool FC play. Real Betis will come with a strong squad and it's going to be a great occasion in another iconic setting, in another fantastic US city."

"We are proud to announce our highly anticipated return to the USA providing a great environment for the squad to prepare for the season ahead," Latty said via the club's official website in February. "Pre-season tours always present exceptional opportunities for our supporters, the team and our official partners to engage in memorable experiences within a key focus market for the club."

The 2024/25 season in the Premier League will kick off on the weekend of August 17 and 18. The fixture list is usually published a few weeks after the prior campaign has come to a close. Liverpool will hope to begin life under a new head coach as league champion, with the Reds currently level on points with Arsenal at the top of the table with seven matches left to play.

Liverpool.com says: A return to the US will be big news for fans in America after so long without the chance to see the Reds on home soil. It will be a very different summer for Liverpool, of course, without Klopp in charge. There is also the impact of the European Championship in Germany to consider.

That tournament takes place from mid-June to mid-July so there is a good chance that a number of players involved in that will not be traveling to the US. They might need an extended break in what looks set to be another packed close season in which the majority of stars get very little in the way of a proper rest.

An original version of this article was first published on February 23. It has since been updated.

How preseason no. 1 women's basketball teams do in march madness.

pre season tour for chelsea

LSU had the honor of beginning the 2023-24 women's basketball season as the No. 1 team . The Tigers were also the defending national champions, defeating Iowa in the final.

But it was South Carolina, ranked sixth in the AP preseason poll, who cut down the nets as national champion.

Eighteen preseason No. 1 teams have gone on to win the national championship. Before the complete list, here are some quick facts about these preseason No. 1 teams since the first NCAA tournament in the 1981-82 season:

  • 18 of the 43 teams (Louisiana Tech and Tennessee were tied at No. 1 in 1989-90) won the title.
  • 34 of the 43 teams made the Final Four
  • All but one made the Sweet 16

Here's a look at how all No. 1 preseason teams have done in the NCAA tournament:

2023-24: LSU: 31-6, No. 3 seed, lost to No. 1 Iowa in the Elite Eight

LSU started its title-defending season with a shocking loss to Colorado on the season's opening night, leading to a quick fall off the top spot in the rankings. The Tigers rebounded to earn a 3-seed in the NCAA tournament, advancing to the Elite Eight before falling to 1-seed Iowa in a rematch of their 2022-23 title game matchup.

2022-23: South Carolina: 36-1, No. 1 seed, lost to No. 2 Iowa in the Final Four

The Gamecocks were hoping to win back-to-back national championships — and complete an undefeated season. South Carolina, led by Aliyah Boston and Zia Cooke, got up to 42 wins in a row before Caitlin Clark and Iowa stunned them in the national semifinals.

2021-22: South Carolina: 35-2, No. 1 seed, won National Championship

South Carolina picked up title No. 2, regrouping from a Dec. 30 loss to Missouri to get to 29-1. Though Kentucky shocked South Carolina in the SEC tournament title game, the Gamecocks won every NCAA tournament game by at least 8 points, the last a 15-point win against UConn in the final.

2020-21: South Carolina: 26-5, No. 1 seed, lost to No. 1 Stanford in the Final Four

The Gamecocks dropped an early December game to NC State before climbing back to No. 1. Three losses in seven games took South Carolina down to No. 7, but the team rallied to win the SEC crown and then reached the national semifinals before falling to eventual champion Stanford.

2019-20: Oregon: 31-2, NCAA tournament canceled

Sabrina Ionescu compiled triple-doubles throughout her career and had the Ducks on a 19-game winning streak that culminated in a 33-point drubbing of Stanford in the Pac-12 tournament championship. But COVID-19 forced the cancelation of the NCAA tournament.

2018-19: Notre Dame: 35-4, No. 1 seed, lost to No. 1 Baylor in the National Championship

A year after the Irish shocked the nation by overcoming injuries to win it all, they made another deep March run, ranking in the top 5 for all but one week and earning a top seed in the NCAA tournament. Notre Dame almost secured consecutive crowns, but Baylor won it all in a thriller, 82-81.

2017-18: UConn: 36-1, No. 1 seed, lost to No. 1 Notre Dame in the Final Four

The Huskies had an undefeated regular season, dominated AAC foes and won by 88, 25, 13 and 29 points in their first four NCAA tournament games. But Notre Dame upset UConn on an Arike Ogunbowale jumper in the final moments.

2016-17: Notre Dame: 33-4, No. 1 seed, lost to No. 2 Stanford in the Elite Eight

Three regular season losses dropped the Irish to as low as No. 7 in the rankings, but a triumphant ACC tournament run gave Notre Dame a top seed for March Madness. But one year after the Irish beat Stanford in the Sweet 16, the Cardinal returned the favor in the Elite Eight.

2015-16: UConn: 38-0, No. 1 seed, won the National Championship

The Huskies not only won their fourth national title in a row — they left no doubt. Breanna Stewart, Morgan Tuck and Moriah Jefferson won the fourth championships in their careers and won NCAA tournament games by 52, 46, 60, 21, 29 and 31 points.

2014-15: UConn: 38-1, No. 1 seed, won the National Championship

The Huskies actually lost (gasp!) a game in the regular season, falling to No. 6 Stanford on the road in OT, 88-86. The loss halted the UConn win streak at 47. No matter, UConn didn't lose again — and again beat Notre Dame in the final.

2013-14: UConn: 40-0, No. 1 seed, won the National Championship

History made. Both the Huskies and Notre Dame came into the national championship undefeated, but UConn's prowess in the paint couldn't be stopped. Stewart had 21 points on 15 shots as UConn now stood alone with the most titles by a single women's basketball program.

For the second time (also in 2004), UConn completed the basketball sweep, as one day after the women won, the men's team won the national title.

2012-13: Baylor: 34-2, No. 1 seed, lost to No. 5 Louisville in the Sweet 16

Baylor seemed prime for another championship run. One year after going undefeated, the Lady Bears returned to No. 1 after a November loss to Stanford — and had won 74 of 75 games led by Brittney Griner. But Monique Reid made two free throws in the final moments to secure the 82-81 upset.

2011-12: Baylor: 40-0, No. 1 seed, won National Championship

Baylor became the first team in college basketball history to go 40-0, never falling out of the top spot as the program won its second title. Star Brittney Griner averaged 23.2 points, 9.5 rebounds and 5.2 blocks per game.

2010-11: UConn: 36-2, No. 1 seed, lost to No. 2 Notre Dame in the Final Four

The Huskies beat Notre Dame three times earlier in the season: 3 points on the road, 21 points at home and 9 points at Hartford in the Big East tournament. But there would not be a fourth time, as Skylar Diggins took down UConn with 28 points.

2009-10: UConn: 39-0, No. 1 seed, won the National Championship

Maya Moore and the Huskies did it again, taking another national title and rarely getting threatened on the court. Moore scored 23 points on the night the Huskies beat Stanford 53-47 in the final.

2008-09: UConn: 39-0, No. 1 seed, won the National Championship

The first of consecutive 39-0 seasons — and never really in doubt. UConn beat Vermont by 39, Florida by 28, Cal by 24, Arizona State by 19, Stanford by 19 and Louisville by 22 to romp to a perfect season.

2007-08: Tennessee: 36-2, No. 1 seed, won the National Championship

The Lady Vols won it all again for Pat Summitt's eighth and final title. Candace Parker averaged more than 21 points that season as the Vols escaped against LSU in the semifinals (47-46) and then beat Stanford in the final by 16.

2006-07: Maryland: 28-6, No. 2 seed, lost to No. 7 Ole Miss in the Second Round

A season after the Terps won their first title, Maryland opened No. 1. But Maryland would end up with a No. 2 seed for the NCAA tournament, falling to a surprise Ole Miss team seeded No. 7. The Rebels reached the Elite Eight, going down to No. 1 Tennessee.

2005-06: Duke: 31-4, No. 1 seed, lost to No. 2 Maryland in the National Championship

The 20-0 Blue Devils faced rival — and fellow unbeaten — North Carolina in late January. Though Duke lost that one, another to UNC in February and to Maryland in the ACC tournament, it reached the NCAA tournament final. However, ACC rival Maryland won the trophy in a second half comeback.

2004-05: Tennessee: 30-5, No. 1 seed, lost to No. 1 Michigan State in the Final Four

The Lady Vols made it to the Final Four for the 16th time and were two wins away from another title. But Michigan State, in the program's first-ever Final Four appearance, rallied from a 16-point second half deficit to advance.

2003-04: UConn: 31-4, No. 2 seed, won the National Championship

Diana Taurasi won consecutive Tournament MOP honors as the Huskies beat Final Four surprise No. 7 Minnesota in the semifinals before beating rival No. 1 Tennessee in the final, 70-61.

2002-03: Duke: 35-2, No. 1 seed, lost to No. 1 Tennessee in the Final Four

The Blue Devils returned to the Final Four for the second year in a row but fell to Tennessee in the national semifinals.

2001-02: UConn: 39-0, No. 1 seed, won the National Championship

Sue Bird, Diana Taurasi and Tournament MOP Swin Cash wouldn't be denied, as the Huskies recorded their second undefeated season and topped Oklahoma 82-70 to win the title. The attendance of 29,619 at the final set a women's college basketball record — and stood until Iowa beat DePaul in an exhibition game in front of 55,646 on Oct. 15, 2023 at Kinnick Stadium . The 2002 attendance mark remains the record for an official game.

2000-01: UConn: 32-3, No. 1 seed, lost to No. 1 Notre Dame in the Final Four

The Huskies were attempting to win a second second consecutive title and led Big East rival Notre Dame by 16 points in the first half. But Niele Ivey, Alicia Ratay and Ruth Riley combined for 59 points as the Irish stormed back to win, 90-75, in the semifinals. The Irish then beat Purdue in the title game.

Here's the remaining list of preseason No. 1 teams and how they did in March.

  • 1999-00: UConn: 36-1, No. 1 seed, won National Championship
  • 1998-99: Tennessee: 31-3, No. 1 seed, lost to No. 3 Duke in the Elite Eight

  • 1990-91 Virginia: 31-3, No. 1 seed, lost to No. 1 Tennessee in the National Championship
  • 1989-90: Tennessee and Louisiana Tech. Tennessee went 27-6, No. 1 seed and lost to No. 2 Virginia in the Elite Eight. Louisiana Tech went 32-1, No. 1 seed, lost to No. 2 Auburn in the Final Four
  • 1988-89: Tennessee: 35-2, No. 1 seed, won National Championship
