Ensenada Beaches Near the Cruise Port

Ensenada is a popular cruise port and city municipality in Baja California, Mexico on the Pacific Coast south of Tijuana.

Travelers flock to the beautiful beaches where they can unwind near the powdery sands and crystalline waters; where they can bask in the sun-drenched scenery from beneath the shade of swaying palms.

Ensenada is also popular for water sports, seaside cafes and nightlife.

Any trip to Ensenada is, of course, not complete without the beaches. Indeed, Ensenada’s beaches are undoubtedly some of the best in the world, especially the ones that can be found south of town. The following countdown is just a glimpse into the wonderful world of Ensenada beaches and the offerings therein.

1. Playa Hermosa: Nearest the Cruise Port

The Ensenada beach nearest the cruise port is Playa Hermosa. It is a little more than two miles south of the cruise port and about a 10 minute drive via taxi or excursion bus. It lies along the city’s long malecon or boardwalk.

2. Playa San Miguel Beach

San Miguel is all about surfing. In fact, the beach is best known as a challenging surf spot with consistent waves. As such, it is not an ideal spot for novice surfers.

Beyond surfing, the golden sand and clear water entice swimmers and snorkelers to indulge in the offerings of San Miguel. With its popularity as a sporting destination as well as the fact that there are stores and restaurants nearby, the beach can become crowded on weekends, but San Miguel is a fairly large beach, sufficiently so that that even on crowded days, beachgoers should still be able to enjoy a relatively hassle-free visit.

3. Playa Estero

Playa hermosa map.

Known to many simply as Estero Beach, this stretch of coast in Ensenada is particularly revered for its more tranquil atmosphere. Associated with the renowned resort of the same name located there, the beach is also celebrated for its natural beauty.

Playa Estero is to a large extent free of the surfing crowd, making it ideal for swimming, taking a hike or going on a horseback ride in the surf. Estero attracts sunbathers, horseback riders, kayakers, snorkelers, divers and beachcombers for an altogether more relaxing atmosphere.

4. El Faro Beach

El Faro Beach is located in the south, i.e. downtown Ensenada. This beach is not as popular as San Miguel and therefore not as crowded. Still, Faro features all the amenities of a modern beach.

While there are no consistent waves for surfing here, El Faro offers great views of the Punta Banda and Islas de Todos Santos, so it’s quite picturesque. Moreover, the beach also features modern, well-kept amenities including well-attended bathrooms, potable water, electricity, rental cottages and even laundry facilities.

5. Playa Baja Beach

Visitors who travel southward from the main area of Ensenada will come across the popular family-centered Baja Beach.

This beach is relatively close to the city center and is surrounded by resort hotels. This means that modern amenities are not a problem here as the stretch is a designated tourist area. Like El Faro, Playa Baja is complete with a panoramic view of the Bahia de Todos Santos. Water sports and other activities are also popular here. This includes snorkelling, skiing, kayaking and diving. As such, water sports rentals are available.

6. Punta Banda

Situated adjacent to the peaceful southern shore of Ensenada’s Bahia de Todos Santos, Punta Banda is a narrow beach jutting out into the Pacific Ocean, creating one of Ensenada’s most picturesque bays.

Most tourists travelling here often go for the panoramic view and the beautiful landscape as opposed to basking in the sun on the beach, especially since Punta Banda at least a couple hours drive form the main city of Ensenada.

Travelling to Punda Banda offers a chance to visit Estero Beach Hotel on one of Ensenada’s most beautiful estuaries and of course, the famous blowhole.

While Ensenada is famed for its resorts and beautiful hotels, it is also popular for its commitment to protecting the natural beauty of its beaches for all to enjoy. This is why some of the best beaches in the world will undoubtedly be found at Ensenada.

A short drive from LA is where you’ll find this seaside Southern California city that’s inseparable from its big-city neighbor, while undeniably moving to its own local beat. Dotted with dozens of parks, beaches and multiple public golf courses (fore times five!), Long Beach also boasts perhaps the world’s most unique hotel — located aboard the old-time ocean liner The Queen Mary (which is haunted, or so go the rumors). You can experience it before one of Carnival’s cruises from Long Beach, but definitely don’t miss the glitzy, big-city Los Angeles — the right place to experience the left-coast life. Take in the storied sights of this City of Angels, from its modern museums and high-end shopping to its funky seaside towns and star-studded SoCal sights dotting the hills and boulevards. Complete Guide to Cruising from the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach

While they would never be mistaken with the world’s most popular cruise ports like Miami and Fort Lauderdale, Los Angeles and Long Beach are still heavily trafficked cruise ports.

View of the Long Beach cruise port

More than half a million passengers each year sail from the Port of Los Angeles, not even including the Long Beach Cruise Terminal a few miles away that serves Carnival Cruise Lines.

Today, you can have your choice of cruise lines in the area, from Carnival to Princess to Norwegian to Royal Caribbean. Meanwhile, itineraries have expanded beyond simply the well-known Mexican Riviera trips to include coastal California cruises, trips through the Panama Canal, and even cruises to Canada.

Los Angeles & Long Beach Cruise Port Locations

Both ports are located just a few miles of each other, with one in San Pedro and the other in Long Beach.

If you’re unfamiliar with the area, these cities are both part of the greater Los Angeles area and are about 25 miles south of downtown LA. If flying in for your cruise, expect the trip from Los Angeles International (LAX) to take at least 30 minutes and possibly more due to traffic.

Which port you cruise from will depend on which cruise line you sail, as they each have their designated spots To help you find your way, we’ve covered each port in detail below.

Sailing From the World Cruise Center (Port of Los Angeles)

The Port of Los Angeles is the busier of the two ports. A number of lines, including Princess, Norwegian, Royal Caribbean and Celebrity depart from the port.

The port features three berths (91-93). Expect it to take about 30 minutes to an hour to get to the port from the Los Angeles International Airport. It’s about the same time coming from downtown.

Los Angeles cruise berths

Getting to the Port of Los Angeles (World Cruise Center)

Southern California is known for its car culture. It shouldn’t be a surprise, then, that the most convenient way to get to the cruise ship is to take an Uber/Lyft. These services provide access from all major airports in the area. And you can be picked up anywhere else in the area to get to the ship on your own schedule.

Expect the ride to cost at least $30 for a car from LAX to the cruise port. Higher rates will apply if going a longer distance or during peak times.

Estimated ride times from major points of interest are below:

  • Los Angeles International (LAX): 30 min
  • Long Beach Airport (LBG): 25 min
  • John Wayne Airport (SNA): 45 min
  • Downtown: 40 min

You can read more about all your options on getting to the ship (including shuttles) and pricing on our Los Angeles cruise transportation page .

Parking at World Cruise Center

Of course, if you live in the area — as millions do — then you may be interested in simply driving and parking at the port.

The good news is that there is ample parking right at the port. You can park practically at the terminal and walk right in. While the convenience is nice, it does come at a cost. Rates are $20 per day for most vehicles. So over the course of a weeklong cruise, you can expect to spend $140.

For more details on parking, see our Los Angles cruise parking page here .

Want to park cheaper? If you are traveling from farther away and plan to stay at a hotel in the area, then look for a hotel with a park and cruise package. With these deals you can get your hotel and have parking (and often a shuttle) included.

See our list of Los Angles cruise hotels with parking deals .

Where to Stay for a Los Angeles Cruise

Flying into Los Angeles for a cruise? It’s always a good idea to plan to arrive into the city the day before. That way if there are any delays, you aren’t scrambling to make it to the port — or have any worry about missing the ship.

So where should you stay? The area around the port (San Pedro) offers a number of hotels within just 1-3 miles of the ships. This includes some right on the waterfront and some that offer a shuttle service to get guests to the cruise terminal.

You can see a list of nearby hotels to the World Cruise Center here .

Sailing From the Long Beach Cruise Terminal

Los Angeles — while far from being the biggest cruise departure port in the country — offers two different cruise ports. The Long Beach terminal is a short distance from the Port of Los Angeles (about 15 minutes via car). It serves Carnival Cruise Lines, which primarily sails shorter trips to the Mexican Riviera.

Visitors will also recognize the historic Queen Mary, which is docked permanently at the port. As with the Port of Los Angeles, expect it to take about 30 minutes to an hour to get to the cruise port from the LAX airport, depending on traffic. If flying in, Long Beach Airport is much closer, reducing travel time.

Port of Long Beach

Getting to the Long Beach Cruise Port

As with the World Cruise Center in San Pedro, your best bet for getting to the port if you need transportation is with an Uber or Lyft. These services are widely available, including offering rides from the major airports.

Prices will vary depending on where you are coming from. For reference, you can expect to spend around $30 for a ride from Los Angeles International to the Long Beach cruise port. Prices will vary based on traffic.

Here are some estimated commute times from certain points:

  • Los Angeles International (LAX): 40 min
  • Long Beach Airport (LBG): 20 min
  • John Wayne Airport (SNA): 35 min
  • Downtown: 45 min

You can read more about all your options on getting to the ship and pricing on our Long Beach cruise transportation page .

Parking at the Long Beach Cruise Terminal

For many people, they don’t have to worry about a ride to the port. Roughly 20 million people live in the greater Los Angeles area that includes Long Beach. That means many people are able to simply drive to the cruise ship.

Of course, if you are driving, then you will need a spot to park. The port offers ample parking in a garage that’s right next to the terminal. However, that convenience comes at a cost. The port charges $23 per day for parking. Over the course of a weeklong cruise, expect to spend upwards of $160.

For all the details on parking, see our Long Beach cruise parking page here .

There are also hotels in the area that offer cruise parking for guests. Stay a night and you can leave your car while you sail — for a reduced cost versus parking at the port. If you plan on staying in a hotel the night before your cruise, this deal can save you a nice chunk of change.

See our list of Long Beach cruise hotels with parking deals .

Where to Stay for a Long Beach Cruise

Flying into the area before your cruise? Or maybe you want to be able to relax before you sail, instead of having to drive to the cruise ship on the morning of your trip? No matter the reason, Long Beach offers a number of hotels that are within just a short distance of the terminal.

As well, the terminal is right across from the city of Long Beach itself. That provides a lot to do right near the ship. For example, you can stay the night before, visit the Aquarium of the Pacific or The Pike (an outdoor shopping mall with restaurants and entertainment options), or even spend some time on the beach.

The good news is there are plenty of options within just a few minutes of the port. You can see a list  and details of nearby hotels to the Long Beach cruise port here .

Despite commissioner's claim, texts show Port's director kept staff informed about hires

A port of palm beach tenant says texts he obtained through a public records request vindicates executive director michael meekins' claim that he kept commissioners informed of personnel decisions..

banda cruise long beach

The controversy over Port of Palm Beach Executive Director Michael Meekins' hiring practices shows no signs of ending with a long-time tenant at the port coming to his defense.

The tenant, Glen Dias of Gulfstream Line, filed a public records request to obtain texts between Meekins and Jean Enright, a port commissioner who has demanded that Meekins be fired for failing to keep her informed of recent hires last year. At the time, Enright was commission chair.

Dias says the texts, more than 150 of them, show that Meekins, in fact, kept Enright informed of personnel moves he was considering. To comply with the request, the staff obtained the cellphones of Meekins and Enright, and then pulled off the relevant texts.

Dias, who has been at the port for more than 30 years, said his purpose in making the request was to see who was telling the truth, Enright or Meekins.

“It is clear to anyone who reads these texts that Meekins was the one who has been truthful,” Dias said.

The  Port of Palm Beach  was among those Florida seaports that has experienced record revenue as of late.

For the first time in more than a decade, all berths at the Port of Palm Beach were occupied on Feb. 1, with container ships, cargo ships, a cruise ship, barges and yachts occupying space, said Port of Palm Beach Chair Wayne Richards, noting that occupied berth spaces equate to added revenue.

But despite the good news, things are still rocky internally.

Enright told The Palm Beach Post she was shocked that a tenant like Dias would get involved in the controversy. While the texts show that Meekins did tell Enright that he was interviewing candidates for chief financial officer and port engineer, Enright said they also show that he went against her advice and never sought board approval when people were hired.

Enright moved to fire Meekins in December from his $230,000 a year post. The commission voted 3-2 in late December to retain him. A month later, Enright again called for his firing, and again the vote was 3-2 to retain him.

More: Port's Executive Director Michael Meekins barely survives second attempt to fire him

The texts show scores of conversations between Enright and Meekins about potential hires

Enright has continued to attack Meekins and has also alleged that he may have altered texts. But below is a sampling of some of the texts provided to Gulfstream Line:

  • On Nov. 7, 2023, Meekins tells Enright he wanted “to move forward” with the hire of a chief financial officer. She answers that the man under consideration is not truthful and says she will get back to him. Later that day, Meekins says he found the applicant to be especially qualified. He went ahead and hired him.
  • In another text, Meekins tells Enright that an applicant seeking to be the port engineer had especially good references. Enright tells Meekins to “wait and look at other candidates.”
  • On Sept. 25, Meekins tells Enright that he is about to make an offer to the engineer applicant.

Meekins told The Post he had no comment about whether he might sue Enright but, like Dias, he said the texts show that he made commissioners aware of what he was doing, noting: "I kept commissioners informed … at no time did I ever fabricate or alter a text.” He said Enright’s accusations hurt him professionally.

“It is difficult to sit back and have your record falsely disparaged in public,” said Meekins.

Dias said the texts show that not only did Meekins keep Enright informed but also that Enright often engaged with Meekins over his hiring decisions, adding: “Enright owes Meekins an apology. If it were me, I’d already be talking to a lawyer.”

Enright said no apology will be offered. She maintains that Meekins overstepped his bounds and significantly increased spending to pay for the new hires and to raise salaries for certain employees.

"He overspent the budget last year to do all this," she said. "I was chair at time time and urged him to hold off on these hires."

Richards said Meekins, as executive director, has the right to hire and fire, adding: "Commissioners need to be careful not to micromanage." He said he has confidence in Meekins' ability to serve as executive director.

We will print it up on a special parchment paper, roll it up and insert it into a custom corked bottle sprinkled with a layer of seashells inside.  Your Gondolier will guide you to the discretely placed floating bottle where your guest will be able to reach over and gently retrieve it.  To their astonishment they will find a “message in the bottle” written to them.  It will be a moment remembered forever more!

This has been performed for first dates, anniversaries, birthdays, Mothers days, and of course proposals……

A sample of a call to Mom from a proposed-to daughter.  “ Mom, you won’t believe it,  Romeo just proposed to me on a Gondola, underneath a romantic bridge, where I found a floating bottle.  It had a message rolled up inside that Said, “Juliet, will you marry me?

Mom says, “ I hope you said YES!!!!”

  • A boat ride with a bunch of people you don’t know…………………………………………$30 bucks a head
  • A dinner date at some overpriced restaurant with just OK service…………………..$50 bucks a head
  • A Gondola cruise with an expert Gondolier rowing you through an enchanting
  • Canal, a bottle of wine, ‘neath a bridge, with a message in a bottle…………………..PRICELESS!!!
