DALLAS (AP) — The first model of the USS Enterprise — used in the opening credits of the original “Star Trek” television series — has boldly gone back home, returning to creator Gene Roddenberry’s son decades after it went missing.

The model’s disappearance sometime in the 1970s had become the subject of lore, so it caused a stir when it popped up on eBay last fall. The sellers quickly took it down, and then contacted Dallas-based Heritage Auctions to authenticate it. Last weekend, the auction house facilitated the model’s return.

Eugene “Rod” Roddenberry, CEO of Roddenberry Entertainment, said he’s thrilled to have the model that had graced the desk of his father, who died in 1991 at age 70.

“This is not going home to adorn my shelves,” Roddenberry said. “This is going to get restored and we’re working on ways to get it out so the public can see it and my hope is that it will land in a museum somewhere.”

AP correspondent Margie Szaroleta reports on the return of the original model of the USS Enterprise from the TV show “Star Trek.”

Heritage’s executive vice president, Joe Maddalena, said the auction house was contacted by people who said they’d discovered it a storage unit, and when it was brought into their Beverly Hills office, he and a colleague “instantly knew that it was the real thing.”

They reached out to Roddenberry, who said he appreciates that everyone involved agreed returning the model was the right thing to do. He wouldn’t go into details on the agreement reached but said “I felt it important to reward that and show appreciation for that.”

Maddalena said the model vanished in the 1970s after Gene Roddenberry loaned it to makers of “Star Trek: The Motion Picture,” which was released in 1979.

“No one knew what happened to it,” Rod Roddenberry said.

The 3-foot (0.91-meter) model of the USS Enterprise was used in the show’s original pilot episode as well as the opening credits of the resulting TV series, and was the prototype for the 11-foot (3-meter) version featured in the series’ episodes. The larger model is on display at the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum.

The original “Star Trek” television series, which aired in the late 1960s, kicked off an ever-expanding multiverse of cultural phenomena, with TV and movie spinoffs and conventions where a fanbase of zealous and devoted Trekkies can’t get enough of memorabilia.

This USS Enterprise model would easily sell for more than $1 million at auction, but really “it’s priceless,” Maddalena said.

“It could sell for any amount and I wouldn’t be surprised because of what it is,” he said. “It is truly a cultural icon.”

Roddenberry, who was just a young boy when the model went missing, said he has spotty memories of it, “almost a deja vu.” He said it wasn’t something he’d thought much about until people began contacting him after it appeared on eBay.

“I don’t think I really, fully comprehended at first that this was the first Enterprise ever created,” he said.

He said he has no idea if there was something nefarious behind the disappearance all those decades ago or if it was just mistakenly lost, but it would be interesting to find out more about what happened.

“This piece is incredibly important and it has its own story and this would be a great piece of the story,” Roddenberry said.

Thankfully, he said, the discovery has cleared up one rumor: That it was destroyed because as a young boy, he’d thrown it into a pool.

“Finally I’m vindicated after all these years,” he said with a laugh.

To Boldly Return —

Long-lost model of the uss enterprise returned to roddenberry family, it showed up in an ebay listing; now roddenberry's son wants to show it to fans..

Samuel Axon - Apr 19, 2024 9:05 pm UTC

This mysterious model appeared on eBay with little fanfare.

The first-ever model of Star Trek's USS Enterprise NCC-1701 has been returned to the Roddenberry family, according to an ABC News report.

The 3-foot model was used to shoot the pilot and credits scene for Star Trek's original series in the 1960s and was used occasionally for shots throughout the series. (Typically, a larger, 11-foot model was used for shots after the pilot.) The model also sat on series creator Gene Roddenberry's desk for several years.

It went missing in the late 1970s; historians and collectors believe it belonged to Roddenberry himself, that he lent it to a production house working on Star Trek: The Motion Picture, and that it was never returned. Its whereabouts were unknown until last fall, when a listing for a mysterious model of the Enterprise appeared on eBay .

The eBay account that posted the item specialized in selling artifacts found in storage lockers that end up without an owner, either because of failure to pay or death.

The model appeared in this promotional image with Roddenberry.

The model was turned over by the eBay seller to Texas-based Heritage Auctions. News spread that it had been discovered, and Gene Roddenberry's son, Eugene "Rod" Roddenberry, made public statements that he would like to see it returned to his family.

After that, there were months of silence, and its fate was unknown—until now. Heritage Auctions announced that it had given the model to Rod Roddenberry. Details of the exchange have not been shared, but Roddenberry said he did compensate Heritage in some way.

Heritage reached out directly to Roddenberry upon acquiring the object and reportedly decided to return it because it was "the right thing to do." Roddenberry said that he "felt it important to reward that and show appreciation for that" but didn't disclose a sum.

Roddenberry also revealed what he has planned for the model:

This is not going home to adorn my shelves. This is going to get restored and we’re working on ways to get it out so the public can see it, and my hope is that it will land in a museum somewhere.

He runs a group called the Roddenberry Foundation that has scanned and digitized many relics from Star Trek's ideation and production over the years, so it's likely the Foundation will get a crack at the model, too.

Original USS Enterprise model from ‘Star Trek’ returned to creator’s son

The first model of the USS Enterprise, the starship that appeared in the opening credits of the original “Star Trek” television series, has been returned to Eugene Roddenberry Jr., the son of the creator of the series, decades after it went missing.

“After a long journey, she’s home,” Roddenberry wrote on social media Thursday.

For die-hard Trekkies, the model’s disappearance had become the subject of folklore, so an eBay listing last fall, with a starting bid of $1,000, didn’t go unnoticed.

“Red alert,” someone in an online costume and prop-making forum wrote, linking to the listing.

Roddenberry’s father, Gene Roddenberry, created the television series, which first aired in 1966 and ran for three seasons. It spawned numerous spinoffs, several films and a franchise that has included conventions and legions of devoted fans with an avid interest in memorabilia.

The seller of the model was bombarded with inquiries and quickly took the listing down.

The seller contacted Heritage Auctions to authenticate it, the auction house’s executive vice president, Joe Maddalena, said Saturday. As soon as the seller, who said he had found it in a storage unit, brought it to the auction house’s office in Beverly Hills, California, Maddalena said he knew it was real.

“That’s when I reached out to Rod to say, ‘We’ve got this. This is it,’ ” he said, adding that the model was being transferred to Roddenberry.

Roddenberry, who is known as Rod, said Saturday that he would restore the model and seek to have it displayed in a museum or other institution.

He said reclaiming the item had only piqued his interest in the circumstances about its disappearance.

“Whoever borrowed it or misplaced it or lost it, something happened somewhere,” he said. “Where’s it been?”

It was unclear how the model ended up in the storage unit and who had it before its discovery.

The original USS Enterprise, a 33-inch model, was mostly made of solid wood by Richard Datin, a model maker for the Howard Anderson Co., a special-effects company that created the opening credits for some of the 20th century’s biggest TV shows.

An enlarged 11-foot model was used in subsequent “Star Trek” television episodes, and is part of the permanent collection of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, where it was donated by Paramount Studios in 1974.

Roddenberry, who said he gave the seller a “reward” for its recovery but did not disclose the terms, assembled a group of “Star Trek” production veterans, model makers and restoration specialists in Beverly Hills to authenticate the find.

The group included a “Star Trek” art supervisor, Michael Okuda, and his wife, Denise, an artist on “Star Trek” television series and films, and Gary Kerr, a “Trek x-pert” who served as technical consultant for the Smithsonian during a 2016 restoration of the 11-foot model.

“We spent at least an hour photographing it, inspecting the paint, inspecting the dirt, looking under the base, the patina on the stem, the grain in the wood,” Roddenberry said.

“It was a unanimous ‘This is 100% the one,’ ” he said.

Gene Roddenberry, who died in 1991, kept the original model, which appeared in the show’s opening credits and pilot episode, on his desk.

Kerr compared the model to 1960s photos he had of the model on Roddenberry’s desk.

“The wood grain matched exactly, so that was it,” he said Saturday.

The model went missing after Roddenberry lent it to the makers of “Star Trek: The Motion Picture,” which was released in 1979, Maddalena said.

“This is a major discovery,” he said, likening the model to the ruby slippers from “The Wizard of Oz,” a prop stolen in 2005 and recovered by the FBI in 2018, and that Heritage Auctions is selling.

While the slippers represent hope, he said, the starship Enterprise model “represents dreams.”

“It’s a portal to what could be,” he said.

‘Star Trek’: Long-Lost Original USS Enterprise Model Finally Makes the Voyage Home

The model was used for the pilot and credits of the original 'Star Trek' series.

The Big Picture

  • The original USS Enterprise model has been found in a storage locker after going missing for decades.
  • The model was used for the original unaired pilot and opening credits of Star Trek: The Original Series .
  • Rod Roddenberry plans to restore and display the iconic starship model in a museum for public viewing.

The original model of the USS Enterprise from Star Trek: The Original Series has been located, after spending several decades missing — not in some distant region of space, but in a storage locker. The model has been returned to Eugene "Rod" Roddenberry , the son of original Trek creator Gene Roddenberry . ABC News reports that the three-foot-long model was given to Gene Roddenberry after the original Trek series ended in 1969, and graced his desk for several years before he loaned it to the makers of 1979's Star Trek: The Motion Picture . The model disappeared shortly afterward and remained missing until it turned up on eBay last year. It had been discovered in a storage locker by parties unknown, who contacted action site Heritage Auctions. Although the model would fetch an enormous price at auction as a one-of-a-kind pop-cultural artifact, an arrangement was made between the finders and Roddenberry, whose father died at 70 in 1991.

The model in question was the first finished model of the iconic starship; it was used for the series' original unaired pilot episode, "The Cage," which was later incorporated into a two-part episode , "The Menagerie," before it was released in full in the 1980s. It was also used for the shots of the Enterprise seen in the show's opening credits. A larger model was later created for the rest of the series; that model is currently on display at the Smithsonian National Air & Space Museum . Roddenberry intends for the original model to find a permanent home, as well:

"This is not going home to adorn my shelves. This is going to get restored and we’re working on ways to get it out so the public can see it and my hope is that it will land in a museum somewhere."

What Is the USS Enterprise?

The flagship of the United Federation of Planets' Starfleet, the USS Enterprise is a Constitution-class starship from the 23rd century. It was originally captained by Robert April, who appeared on Star Trek: The Animated Series before appearing in live-action for the first time in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds . April later passed on command to Christopher Pike , whose adventures are currently being chronicled in the prequel series Strange New Worlds . After Pike was promoted to fleet command, James Kirk was given command of the ship, taking it on a five-year mission that kicked off one of science fiction's most enduring franchises.

In Star Trek III: The Search for Spock , then-Admiral Kirk stole the Enterprise to journey to the unstable Genesis Planet and reunite his friend Spock's mind with his body; during that adventure, Kirk had the ship self-destruct to prevent it from being seized by the Klingons. It was later replaced by a near-identical ship, the Enterprise-A ; many subsequent Federation ships have borne the name, up to the rechristened Enterprise-J in the series finale of Star Trek: Picard .

The son of Roddenberry and actor Majel Barrett , Rod Roddenberry is the chief executive officer of Roddenberry Entertainment. He currently executive produces the latest generation of Star Trek series, including Discovery , Strange New Worlds , Picard , Lower Decks , and Prodigy .

The original model of the Enterprise is now back in the Roddenberry family. Viewers can see it in action in Star Trek: The Original Series , which can be streamed on Paramount+.

Long-lost first model of the USS Enterprise from 'Star Trek' boldly goes home after twisting voyage

Lost star trek model.

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

DALLAS (AP) — The first model of the USS Enterprise — used in the opening credits of the original “Star Trek” television series — has boldly gone back home, returning to creator Gene Roddenberry 's son decades after it went missing.

The model's disappearance sometime in the 1970s had become the subject of lore, so it caused a stir when it popped up on eBay last fall. The sellers quickly took it down, and then contacted Dallas-based Heritage Auctions to authenticate it. Last weekend, the auction house facilitated the model's return.

Eugene “Rod” Roddenberry, CEO of Roddenberry Entertainment, said he's thrilled to have the model that had graced the desk of his father, who died in 1991 at age 70.

“This is not going home to adorn my shelves," Roddenberry said. “This is going to get restored and we’re working on ways to get it out so the public can see it and my hope is that it will land in a museum somewhere.”

Heritage's executive vice president, Joe Maddalena, said the auction house was contacted by people who said they'd discovered it a storage unit, and when it was brought into their Beverly Hills office, he and a colleague “instantly knew that it was the real thing.”

They reached out to Roddenberry, who said he appreciates that everyone involved agreed returning the model was the right thing to do. He wouldn't go into details on the agreement reached but said “I felt it important to reward that and show appreciation for that.”

Maddalena said the model vanished in the 1970s after Gene Roddenberry loaned it to makers of "Star Trek: The Motion Picture," which was released in 1979.

“No one knew what happened to it," Rod Roddenberry said.

The 3-foot (0.91-meter) model of the USS Enterprise was used in the show's original pilot episode as well as the opening credits of the resulting TV series, and was the prototype for the 11-foot (3-meter) version featured in the series' episodes. The larger model is on display at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum.

The original “Star Trek” television series, which aired in the late 1960s, kicked off an ever-expanding multiverse of cultural phenomena, with TV and movie spinoffs and conventions where a fanbase of zealous and devoted Trekkies can't get enough of memorabilia.

This USS Enterprise model would easily sell for more than $1 million at auction, but really “it’s priceless," Maddalena said.

“It could sell for any amount and I wouldn’t be surprised because of what it is," he said. “It is truly a cultural icon.”

Roddenberry, who was just a young boy when the model went missing, said he has spotty memories of it, “almost a deja vu.” He said it wasn't something he'd thought much about until people began contacting him after it appeared on eBay.

“I don't think I really, fully comprehended at first that this was the first Enterprise ever created,” he said.

He said he has no idea if there was something nefarious behind the disappearance all those decades ago or if it was just mistakenly lost, but it would be interesting to find out more about what happened.

“This piece is incredibly important and it has its own story and this would be a great piece of the story,” Roddenberry said.

Thankfully, he said, the discovery has cleared up one rumor: That it was destroyed because as a young boy, he'd thrown it into a pool.

“Finally I’m vindicated after all these years," he said with a laugh.

Carnac's Guide to Star Trek Fleet Command

To Boldly Go… The USS Enterprise

Carnac | October 24, 2020 October 24, 2020 | Federation Ships , Ships

The Starfleet flagship, the USS Enterprise, is one in the line of iconic Constitution class starships. These phenomenal spacecraft have become the backbone of a rebuilding and reinvigorated Federation. Each model in the class is fitted with the latest technology the Federation has to offer. Star Trek Fleet Command

It’s the ship you downloaded the game to get. The USS Enterprise. The big Jerry Goldsmith theme played in my head as she emerged from the Shipyard . When you get yours, it’s going to be a big day.

When I got mine, it was even a big deal for my seven-year-old son, whose introduction to Star Trek has been this game. He was so excited when I told him a few months ago that today was the day we’d be getting the Enterprise.

How to Get Your USS Enterprise

Unlike the uncommon and rare Tier 3 ships, you can’t grind your way to a USS Enterprise per se. You’re not going to have blueprints drop by hitting hostiles. You can buy blueprints either with faction credits or with actual dollars. You can get some in missions, and you can get some in rare and epic armadas.

You’ll also have to have a level 34 shipyard , and you’ll need to have a respected reputation with the Federation.

The key, unless you’re willing and able to fork over a lot of money, is to grind out the faction credits. This means living in Klingon space, and hunting Klingon Scout ships like it’s your job. You’ll need 180 of them a day (more if you’ve leveled up your rep past respected.)

It also means getting your Vi’Dar as strong as you can and grinding out Borg probes for charged nanoprobes. It’s going to be a long road, but it’s worth it.

In order to help keep you focused, and doing what you need to do every day to get your Enterprise, I put together this Blueprint Calculator. A number of people have told me that it helped them stay focused, and get their ship sooner.

The Ship Ability

Giving What She’s Got – As long as the ship has Morale, the USS ENTERPRISE heals the Shield Health whenever it gets hit.

This ability starts at 5% at level one and works all the way up to 25% at level 45. This means your shields will heal 5% for each time you’re hit in battle. So if you’re at level 1 going up against an Augur (which should be the ship to defeat the Enterprise), you’re going to get hit four times in round one, so long as your ship has morale, you’re going to get 20% of your shield back before the next round.

At level 45, you’ll get 100% back.

Since the key to just about every battle in Star Trek Fleet Command is surviving and giving your weapons more chances to fire, this ability is tremendous. It’s going to feel like you never run out of shields. Even when you lose, your still likely going to have shields left over.

But, you will need to make sure that you’ve got officers on your ship that will get you morale to make it work. Which leads us to how to crew the ship.

Crewing Your USS Enterprise

In order to take advantage of the Enterprise’s great ship ability, you’re going to want to activate Morale. As of today, October 24th, 2020, there are only a few officers who do that. James T. Kirk , Alexander Marcus , Arkady Ivanov, and Hikaru Sulu.

Of these, you’ll probably want to go with Kirk, or Marcus, or both.

Given that the Enterprise’s ability will tend to get you in longer battles, Khan to increase your critical chances becomes a very good choice. If you’ve got a decent Paul Zhou he’s great with any morale crew. Officers like Uhura or Kang will also increase your accuracy.

You might also want to go with an anti-faction officer like Krell or Mirek (anti-Federation), Yan’agh, or Yuki (ant-Romulan), or L’Nar against Klingons. Yuki also makes a great captain for your Enterprise, as her shield stripping will remove a portion of your opponent’s shields per round – and again, in long battles, this will help you. All of that damage will now be going to your opponent’s hull.

If you’ve got John Harrison , he’ll also be somewhat effective. The rub is that he only works for one round, but the Enterprise is built for long battles and has it’s biggest weapon damage in even-numbered rounds.

Against hostiles, your Pike crew will do just fine.

The great thing about the Enterprise is that it gives you a great deal of flexibility when it comes to the crew. It’s a Swiss-army knife of a ship. So depending on which officers you have, what you’re trying to accomplish, and your level, you’re going to find a combination on this ship that works for you.

The Weapons of the USS Enterprise

uss enterprise firing pattern

Your Enterprise is loaded with three energy weapons (even if two of them are called “photon torpedoes, which really should be kinetic weapons.)

The two photon torpedoes will fire once per round.

It also has a disruptor bank, it fires twice every other round.

To give you some basic stats on the weapons, here’s are the stats on my Enterprise with Mark 4 weapons.

Obviously, these will change with research and other factors, but just to give you an idea. The disruptor is bit stronger than the photons.

Owning and Upgrading Your Enterprise

uss enterprise cost of ownership

The Enterprise is an explorer, and as such is going to require a lot of gas to upgrade.

A lot, so investing in some of the pure gas techs to reduce these costs is going to save you a bunch in the long run.

The secondary material is ore.

You’re really going to need to focus on research to reduce these costs.

Nit-Picking

Why does this ship have disruptors instead of phasers? I realize my nerd-sign is flashing here, but come on, this seems like it’s a big enough deal that it should get fixed in an update at some point. Seems like it should be an easy fix.

And here’s a video for you super-nerds out there, explaining the difference between phasers and disruptors.

USS Enterprise Trivia

Given that we’ve got a lot of new content coming out over the next year, and possibly another Enterprise incarnation or two, I’m going to start with the creation of the original, and then hit on the 2009 version.

The original Enterprise was created by designer Matt Jefferies (for whom the “ Jefferies Tube ” was named.) Jefferies was a World War II veteran who had served in the US Air Force on bombers.

In the original drafts, the Roddenberry’s hero ship was called the “Yorktown.”

The original three-foot demonstration model of the ship was built in November of 1964 by the Howard Anderson Company . They also did optical effects and models for movies like The Manchurian Candidate, Airplane!, Superman II, among many others.

After Roddenberry approved the first model, an 11-foot model was constructed in December of ’64 by   Richard C. Datin, Jr. , Mel Keys, and Vern Sion at  Volmer Jensen ‘s model shop.

2009 Enterprise Redesign

I’m not really a fan of the 2009 redesigned look. It’s fine as far as it goes, but I much prefer the look of the refit Enterprise from the original series movies.

This alternate universe Enterprise was much larger than its TOS ancestor.

This video gives a pretty good overview of the reasoning and redesign of the Enterprise for the newer movies.

On the other hand, this newer Enterprise did appear in Rihanna’s video for her song Sledgehammer in 2014 from the sound track of Star Trek Beyond. Also, swarms and the Starbase Yorktown.

It’s a good song, and a nice video. But I was kinda hoping for a Peter Gabriel cover. This, for my money, was the coolest video of the 80s. And that says something, when the coolest video of your decade was made by the same guys who did Wallace and Gromit .

And now I bet you’re wondering if there’s a Peter Gabriel connection to Star Trek.

And there is. It was his cover of the David Bowie song, Heroes , that appears in the Short Treks episode, Children of Mars .

Star trek: discovery’s enterprise crossover made 1 of burnham’s crew very happy.

One member of Star Trek: Discovery's crew loves Constitution Class starships and Disco meeting the USS Enterprise must have made him happy.

Warning: SPOILERS for Star Trek: Discovery Season 5, Episode 3 - "Jinaal"

  • Lt. Commander Gen Rhys, Discovery's Chief Tactical Officer, revealed his love for 23rd-century Constitution Class starships.
  • The USS Discovery fought alongside the Constitution Class USS Enterprise in Star Trek: Discovery season 2, which must have thrilled Rhys.
  • Star Trek: Picard's Jack Crusher is also an admirer of Captain Kirk's Constitution Class USS Enterprise.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 reveals one of the USS Discovery's crew was very happy when the USS Enterprise crossed over. In a shocking twist, the Starship Enterprise intercepted the USS Discovery in the final moments of Star Trek: Discovery season 1's finale. This opened the door for Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) to take command of the USS Discovery in Star Trek: Discovery season 2. Pike, along with Number One (Rebecca Romijn) and Lieutenant Spock (Ethan Peck) proved to be so popular, that they received their own spinoff, which became Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

In Star Trek: Discovery season 5, Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and the USS Discovery have left their 23rd-century lives long behind. Now living in the year 3191, Burnham and Discovery are hot on the trail of the Progenitors' ancient technology that can create life , itself, which was discovered by Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and the USS Enterprise-D in the 24th century of Star Trek: The Next Generation . Aboard the USS Discovery, Commander Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie) is under orders to get to know his new crew, which led to a revelation about Lt. Commander Gen Rhys (Patrick Kwok-Choon) and his love for Constitution Class starships.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Returning Cast & New Character Guide

Star trek: discovery's gen rhys loves strange new worlds' uss enterprise, discovery teamed up with the enterprise in season 2.

During Lt. Commander Gen Rhys' extremely brief meeting with Commander Rayner in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 3, "JInaal," he was asked to describe something personal in 20 words or less. The USS Discovery's Chief Tactical Officer revealed he loves Constitution Class starships. Rhys told Rayner and Lieutenant Sylvia Tilly (Mary Wiseman:

"I'm a real ship-head. Love the Crossfield, but something about the curves of a 23rd-century Constitution Class just gets me."

Rhys was the USS Discovery's Tactical Officer throughout Star Trek: Discovery season 2, and Gen must have secretly been thrilled when the Disco teamed up with the USS Enterprise . The classic Constitution Class Enterprise, NCC-1701, was kept out of the fighting during the Klingon War, but it saw plenty of action when it joined the Crossfield Class USS Discovery in the final battle against Control. Lt. Rhys, as he was ranked at that time, likely enjoyed being so close to the most legendary Constitution Class ship in Starfleet before Discovery jumped to the 32nd century.

Star Trek: Picard's Jack Crusher Also Loves The Constitution Class USS Enterprise

"all those perfectly clean retro lines.".

Long after Starfleet retired the 23rd century Constitution Class, the USS Enterprise found another admirer in the 25th century: Star Trek: Picard' s Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers). In Star Trek: Picard season 3, episode 6, "The Bounty," Jack confessed his love of Captain James T. Kirk's (William Shatner) USS Enterprise-A to Commander Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) when the USS Titan-A was docked at the Fleet Museum on Athan Prime :

"Well, this one's my personal favorite. Kirk's Enterprise. All those perfectly clean retro lines. Yep, I'm definitely a Constitution Class man."

The reverence Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Picard have for the 23rd-century Constitution Class isn't surprising. The Starship Enterprise boasts an iconic design, and it's one of the most distinctive and unforgettable spaceships in pop culture. Star Trek has featured numerous beautiful starships, but the Crossfield Class USS Discovery and the Constitution Class USS Titan-A are essentially variants of the original USS Enterprise design . The 23rd century Constitution Class USS Enterprise is a true classic, and Lt. Commander Gen Rhys got to see it up close in Star Trek: Discovery seasons 1 and 2.

Captain Kirk should have gone aboard Star Trek: The Next Generation's Enterprise

W illiam Shatner's Captain Kirk made his final appearance on Star Trek: Generations. He, Montgomery Scott (James Doohan) and Pavel Chekov (Walter Koenig) joined the Enterprise-B for its inaugural adventure, and Kirk saves the ship from a gravimetric field and is presumed dead. From that point forward, Kirk is trapped in the Nexus while the world goes on without him. But, as Screenrant writer Rachel Hulshult points out , Generations missed out on a HUGE opportunity by not bringing Kirk aboard Captain Picard's (Patrick Stewart) Enterprise.

Generations was, essentially, a way to pass the torch from The Original Series movies to The Next Generation movies. It was the final time that Captain Kirk would have an adventure in the universe, and while he was brought back to help save that same universe...again, his presence in the movie, if utilized properly, could have made such a big difference in how it was received.

Having Shatner in this movie should have been one of the major focuses. Pairing him with Captain PIcard aboard the Enterprise would have been more of a torch-passing moment than a fight with Macolm McDowell's character, Dr. Soran. To see the two captains on the bridge of that iconic ship, one who led her and one who currently leads her, would have been a truly classical moment.

Imagine Kirk's face on seeing the differences a hundred years brought to his ship. With Kirk able to see the advancements and Picard's crew in awe of Kirk, this would have made the movie about something other than just leaving The Original Seris in the dust. And I'm wholeheartedly in agreement with Hulshult's statement that "Star Trek: Generations blew it by not having Kirk aboard Picard's Enterprise." By utilizing Kirk, Picard and his crew, and the Enteprise as a team, Generations could have made history for a better reason than the death of Captain Kirk .

This article was originally published on redshirtsalwaysdie.com as Captain Kirk should have gone aboard Star Trek: The Next Generation's Enterprise .

23 best movie and tv spaceships: the star craft that defined our childhood.

We're taking the time to take a look at some of the biggest and best spacecraft to ever to have made it onto the big and small screens.

Science fiction films and TV shows have graced us with some amazing spaceships over the last few decades, often becoming as iconic as the characters and stories themselves.

We're taking the time to take a look at some of the biggest and best spacecraft ever to have made it onto the big and small screens.

  • Real-life robots that will make you think the future is now
  • The best ever space robots of the past, present and future

Max (Flight of the Navigator)

In the 1986 classic 'Flight of the Navigator', a small boy called David is transported through space and time by an alien spacecraft from the planet Phaelon by a robotic commander known as Max (short for "Trimaxion Drone Ship").

David's journey includes a space trip to the alien craft's home planet 560 light years away and a transport through time eight years into his future. In the meantime, his brain is used to store copious amounts of data including star charts, alien technical manuals and more.

Max and his spacecraft make it onto our list because of the comedy value of the pilot and the fascinating journey David goes on. We also can't forget all the alien creatures he meets along the way. Cracking film for children of all ages!

Martian flying saucer (Mars Attacks!)

A slightly more comical, though no less deadly threat to the human race came in the form of the flying spaceships and their passengers from Mars in the 1996 film Mars Attacks!

Tim Burton apparently wanted to make the aliens and the special effects look as fake as possible for comedy value and as a homage to alien films from previous generations. The result was some hilarious-looking beings and flying saucers that perfectly matched the collectors' card series it was based on.

Borg Cube (Star Trek)

Resisting the Borg making its way into this list would be futile. These monster spaceships dwarf most other ships on our list, apparently spanning 3,000 metres on each side.

They're the scourge of the Star Trek Universe , assimilating or laying waste to everything in their path. Equipped with disruptor beams, high-yield photon torpedoes, various tractor beams and multi-adaptive shields these ships have a heavy arsenal to fight off any foe.

Inside, the menacing Borg drones are ready to destroy or assimilate anyone and everyone they come across. A force to be reckoned with.

The Death Star (Star Wars)

No list of fictional spaceships would be complete without a reference to the Death Star - the moon-sized battle station built by the Galactic Empire with the sole purpose of blowing up planets with a rather unpleasant super laser.

As the Emporer's pet project, it was akin to Hitler's wonder weapons but, luckily for the Rebels, it had one weakness in an exhaust port that meant a cheeky and well-aimed proton torpedo could put an end to the threat. See Rogue One for the reason why it was there.

  • What order should you watch all the Star Wars films and shows?

Heart of Gold (Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy)

From the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, the Heart of Gold is a magnificent spaceship equipped with the infamous and revolutionary Infinite Improbability Drive making it capable of travelling anywhere in the galaxy in an instant. Unfortunately, that's coupled with the danger of randomly and unfortunately altering reality in doing so.

Stolen by Zaphod Beeblebrox, President of the Galaxy and a man who had been voted "Worst Dressed Sentient Being in the Known Universe" no less than seven times, the Heart of Gold was later used to accidentally rescue Arthur Dent and Ford Prefect from an untimely death, as they floated unprotected in space. It also turned two missiles into a whale and bowl of petunias. Handy.

It's a fantastic ship if you can cope with the sunny disposition of the automatic doors with Genuine People Personalities and the downtrodden depressing drone of Marvin the paranoid android.

Klingon Bird of Prey (Star Trek)

The Klingon Bird of Prey is a heavily armed warship from the Star Trek universe, first encountered by Starfleet and Captain James T. Kirk in 2153. Armed with a cloaking device and a deadly arsenal of weaponry, it's a menacing foe in the right hands.

Not the prettiest ship to look at, but then neither is the crew. Though we wouldn't say that to their faces.

The Milano (Guardians of the Galaxy 2)

This space ship was used by our hero Peter Quill to save the Galaxy. Which in our mind makes it a worthy addition.

In the original film, Star-Lord Peter Quill (played by Chris Pratt) used his ship, the Milano, to enter the Dark Aster and save the Galaxy.

In the process, the Milano was badly damaged. As payment for saving Xander, Nova Corps paid to rebuild and fix up the Milano for Quill.

  • Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3: Release date, trailer, and how to catch up

USS Enterprise (Star Trek)

The USS Enterprise has been on our screens, big and small, in various guises over the decades. It's been blown up, crashed, shot at and taken on bold new missions across stretches of space that no man has been before.

Indeed, Gene Roddenberry's spaceship became such an influential vessel that NASA even named its first space shuttle after it.

Various versions of the Enterprise were Captained by big names from the Star Trek series including James T. Kirk, Jean-Luc Picard and Johnathan Archer.

The ship itself is pretty special for various reasons, including the presence of the holodeck in the Next Generation version and a wide array of weaponry and tactical offensive and defensive capabilities including photon torpedoes, ramming speed and a detachable saucer for emergency situations.

  • Star Trek in real life: Best Starfleet gadgets and toys you can buy

The Space Cruiser (Rick and Morty)

The Space Cruiser looks like something someone's mad, drunk Grandfather bashed together in their garage. Which is pretty much exactly what happened.

This UFO-like flying machine was created by mad scientist Rick Sanchez in order to aid his insane adventures around the Galaxy with his Grandson Morty.

It's not much to look at, but it does boast some pretty special gadgetry that includes a battery which houses an entire Universe (in a miniature form known as a Microverse), some artificial intelligence and a vast array of hidden weaponry that appears to keep his Granddaughter Summer Safe from all threats in one episode of the show.

The Space Cruiser has already been on some pretty wild rides and we're expecting more of the same in future episodes.

Thunderbird 3 (Thunderbirds)

Thunderbird 3 was the main spaceship in the International Rescue team's arsenal of vehicles. Effectively a reusable, vertically launched space rocket, it was used for space rescue missions and trips to Thunderbird 5 – the team's space station.

Boasting chemical lift-off rockets and an ion drive for use in the void of space, Thunderbird 3 was an impressive spacecraft in various ways, not least of which was the ability to be controlled remotely by a device on pilot Alan Tracy's wrist.

Discovery One (2001: A Space Odyssey)

With a graceful and sleek design, Discovery One first made its way onto our screens in 2001: A Space Odyssey.

This nuclear-powered interplanetary spaceship is particularly interesting thanks to being operated by HAL 9000 the Heuristically programmed Algorithmic computer that controls the ship's systems and interacts with the crew.

When HAL turns bad and decides to kill the crew to prevent them disconnecting his cognitive circuits things become interesting. Another of man's journeys into AI gone bad, the film is great and the spaceship is a corker too. Unless you're a passenger of course.

Moya (Farscape)

Moya is the name of another unusual spaceship appearing on our list thanks to being a part-organic sentient being. As if a living, breathing spaceship wasn't impressive enough, Moya also includes a four-armed Pilot who is physically bonded to her and works as navigator, operator and companion as well as a link to the crew.

Moya offers nothing in the way of weaponry, so her only defensive manoeuvre is to activate a "starburst" which allows the spaceship to travel through space-time at incredible speeds.

Moya appeared on sci-fi cult series Farscape which sadly ended in 2003 but remains fondly in our hearts.

The Tardis (Dr Who)

Although it might not be a spaceship in the traditional sense, the TARDIS (Time And Relative Dimensions In Space) makes it onto our list because of its sheer awesome quirkiness.

Bigger on the inside than it appears on the out and capable of travelling anywhere through space and time at the press of a button, it helps The Doctor explore the Universe and deal with everything from Daleks to Cybermen.

Better still, the inside of the TARDIS is equipped with all sorts of rooms and even boasts a swimming pool and art gallery.

Dark Aster (Guardians of the Galaxy)

Dark Aster makes it onto our list for being one of the most menacing alien ships to hit the big screen.

Dark, angry and foreboding, this mammoth corkscrew-like spaceship was taken by Ronan the Accuser to destroy all Nova citizens in his path with the intended eventual destruction of the planet Xander as his end goal. But first, he'd have to get through the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Serenity (Firefly)

Serenity is a spacecraft from the TV series "Firefly" which only made it to 14 episodes before being cancelled (much to the dismay of its fans).

The ship was home to nine people who lived and fought on the losing side of a civil war in what is essentially a space western in a universe where Earth had been abandoned many years before.

Serenity is a basic ship, with simple fittings and fixtures and isn't really much to write home about. But she is a place to live and a vessel of salvation for the crew who are perpetually trying to keep out of trouble. With no weapons to speak of, Serenity is another spacecraft on our list whose only defence is to cut and run.

Real-life rocket Apollo 13 made it onto the big screen in the form of a film of the same name. It tells the true story of the seventh manned space mission and the third rocket launch that was intended to land on the moon.

The real spacecraft was launched in 1970 and suffered an oxygen tank explosion when 205,000 miles from Earth, this resulted in the need to abandon the moon mission and an incredible, desperate struggle to get the astronaut's home.

Apollo 13 makes it to the list, not for being a great spaceship (after all it went a bit wrong) but because of the heroic mission and safe return of the crew.

Planet Express (Futurama)

The animated Planet Express ship was a ship designed and built by Professor Farnsworth – the mad scientist and owner of the Planet Express delivery service.

The ship itself is nothing particularly special, being armed with just one cannon and no sign of any cloaking device, but it makes it onto our list because of the crew.

An eccentric robot who's prone to theft, by the name of Bender, a cryogenically frozen down-on-his-luck delivery boy named Philip J. Fry and the ship's Captain, one-eyed mutant Turanga Leela. With this bunch of characters on board, the ship gets into plenty of scrapes, jams and accidents, but mostly always comes back in one piece.

Prawn mothership (District 9)

Looming over the Johannesburg skyline in the film District 9 was the crippled alien mothership belonging to the Prawns, an insectoid race of alien creatures who landed on Earth in the late 20th Century.

This alien spaceship is unusual and makes it to our list because it's probably one of the only alien space crafts from a film which hasn't come to Earth for the purpose of invasion, destruction or colonisation. No, the crew of the Mothership just want somewhere to live and eat cat food.

Starbug (Red Dwarf)

Starbug is the designation for the small, green, bug-like shuttlecrafts of the Jupiter Mining Corporation's mining ship Red Dwarf.

These little robust, mistreated but much-loved spacecraft are home to the hapless crew which includes the last surviving member of the Human race Dave Lister, his loathed hologram companion Rimmer, mechanised service droid Kryten and their friend who evolved from a pet cat.

Starbug itself is nothing special to look at, but through the various episodes and series of Red Dwarf it does garner many enhancements that at various points include a cloaking device, the ability to travel underwater, laser cannon upgrades and a super tachyon-powered drive.

Crashed onto many planets and thrown into many scrapes, Starbug proves itself to be an extremely formidable craft.

Razor Crest

The Razor Crest was owned and piloted by Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin in the hit TV series The Mandalorian. It's not the most impressive ship on our list but its cargo certainly was. And it managed to outfly and outgun tie fighters, which makes it fairly awesome in our mind.

The Gunstar (The Last Starfighter)

1984's The Last Starfighter broke some new ground with a decent amount of the film being made using computer graphics. That included the Gunstar spaceship, which was the first to be completely computer rendered and thus pretty special for that alone.

The Ranger (Interstellar)

The Ranger was designed to be a reusable, high-efficiency single-stage-to-orbit (SSTO) reconnaissance spacecraft built by NASA.

This spacecraft was from a superb film and deserves to be on the list just for that, but it's also a thing of beauty with sleek lines and an intriguing frame.

Heighliner (Dune 2021)

From Dune comes gigantic cylindrical vessels which were able to fold space and allow people to travel vast distances in an instant.

A wonderful work of science fiction that would change the future of humankind in unimaginable ways.
