SWIM WITH THE MINKES

Silversonic has one of the few permits available from the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority that allows our guests to swim with dwarf minke whales if encountered – a truly unforgettable experience!

From our experience, July to September is the peak season to encounter the inquisitive minkes as they frequent the Agincourt Ribbon Reefs where Silversonic visits. They are however common in our waters between the months of March and October.

All divers should be aware that after diving there is a  minimum wait period before flying in a pressurised aircraft:

a minimum 12 hours for a single dive

a minimum 18 hours for 2 or more dives (PADI standard)

a minimum 24 hours for multiple dives over multiple days

Important information for diving:  If you have booked diving or are thinking of diving you MUST visit https://calypsoreefcruises. com/medical to read the medical advice before you travel with us. Some medical conditions and medications may prevent you from diving without a Queensland Dive Medical.

By law, the minimum age to dive is 12 years and anyone under 18 years will need a parent or guardian’s permission.  We require anyone over the age of 70 to provide a doctor’s clearance to dive. Certified Drivers must produce their certification card.

When using a dive computer, divers should follow its recommendations.

Scuba Diving FAQ

What is the minimum age to dive.

The minimum age to dive is 12 years with parent/guardian.  Anyone under 18 years of age will need a parent or guardians permission.  Certified Divers must produce their certification card

Will any medical conditions prohibit me from diving?

Scuba diving is an exciting and demanding activity. To scuba dive safely , you must not be extremely overweight or in physically poor condition. Diving can be strenuous under certain conditions. Your respiratory and circulatory systems must be in good health. All body spaces must be normal and healthy. A person with heart trouble, a current cold or congestion, epilepsy, asthma, a severe medical problem or who is under the influence of alcohol or drugs, should not dive. If taking medication, consult your doctor before taking part in diving activities.

You will be required to complete a medical declaration prior to participating in diving activities. The purpose of this Medical Declaration is to find out if you should be examined by a physician before participating in recreational diving. A positive response to a question does not necessarily disqualify you from diving. A positive response means there is a pre-existing condition that may affect your safety while diving and you must seek the advice of a physician.

Can I fly before or after diving?

You should allow a minimum interval of 12 hours prior to flying if completing a single dive and 24 hours if doing multiple dives.

What are the COVID dive medical reccomendations?

Covid19 shares many of the same symptoms as other serious viral pneumonia that require a period of convalescence before returning to full activities, a process that can take weeks or months depending on symptom severity.  If you have been subject to Covid19, the following guidelines apply: 

• Divers who have had symptomatic Covid19, should wait a minimum of two , preferably three months before resuming their diving activities.
• Divers who have tested positive with Covid19 but have remained completely asymptomatic, should wait one month before resuming diving.
• Divers who have been hospitalised with pulmonary symptoms related to Covid19, should, after a three-month waiting period, undergo complete pulmonary function testing as well as a cardiac evaluation with echocardiography and exercise test  (exercise electrocardiography) to ascertain normal cardiac function prior to their return to diving.

Can I try scuba diving if I have never done it before?

Yes! If you are over 12 years old and pass all the medical questionnaires, you can do an intro-dive. You will given a detailed 30 min brief from our experienced PADI dive masters and all the equipment you need. We do smaller groups for intro dives and will be in safe hands with our friendly crew.

What tours are available for certified divers?

For the experienced divers (certified), join our PADI dive masters as they show you sheer walls of corals, caves and possibly drift dive (if conditions permit). Just don’t forget your certification card!

Everything you need for a safe and comfortable dive. We provide lyrca suits and sanitised equipment + diving brief before you start.
