Located 12 kilometers from Kuttiikanam, the road from Parunthumpara to Sathram is scenic with tea plantations on both sides. You can take a jeep from Hills and Hues and reach Sathram. The best time for a safari is from Early August to February last. If you are a rain lover, feel free to visit Sathram during monsoons when there will be many live waterfalls. With a distance of 25 kilometers, Sathram is pretty reachable from Hills and Hues, the best luxury resort in Thekkady.   

Ottakathalamedu  

 This is one of the less explored places in Idukki. At a distance of 4.5 kilometers from Kumily, there is a breathtaking viewpoint.  After travelling about 200 meters from the viewpoint, you will reach the Ottakathalamedu watchtower.  The beautiful view is a visual feast with small streams, Kumily city and vegetable farms down the valley. There is a tree house near the point from where you can enjoy an amazing view.   

Pandikuzhi   

You can visit pandikuzhi on your way from Chellarkovil waterfalls.  The sharp right just before the view point is just a beginning of an adventurous safari. The two hour journey is preferably done in small vehicles as the muddy way would be challenging with large vehicles. After passing through a steep slope, you reach a parking area. After parking the car, you may take a short walk to one of the most amazing viewpoint of Kerala. Coupled with beautiful grasslands around, Pandikuzhi is a must visit spot if you are planning a visit near Thekkady

Chellarkovil  

Located at a distance of 11 kilometers from Kumily, lies in the Kerala Tamilnadu border.  The place is known for the beautiful cascade of waterfalls that emerge from Kerala and ends in Tamil Nadu. This cozy village is a special example for ecotourism as all villagers here are. 

The two hour safari is a unique and is opted by tourists all over the world. Will I see a tiger during my jeep safari in Periyar National Park?

Periyar National Park is known for being the home to many species of animals. This is also where people go to try to catch a glimpse of the majestic tiger. Although many have seen tigers while on their jeep safari, you should keep in mind that there is no guarantee that you will spot one on your safari. However, your driver will take you to places where these wild animals are often seen.

Will we have a tour Guide/Manager?

Thekkady, as well as Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, are known for rough terrains and dense forest inhabited by numerous wildlife species. So, Jeep Safaris also offer experienced tour guides for the visitors. Some tour companies also offer guides with proficiency in several languages for the benefit of tourists.

What kind of clothing is required for the trip?

The clothing will vary on the time of the year you decide to go for the Jeep Safari. Those opting for daytime tours should wear skin hugging clothes that cover body well and also put on hats and sunglasses. The summer sun can be pretty scorching, so be sure to carry a hand towel along. Those opting for nocturnal safaris must wear thick clothes and cover body parts as well as possible. Wearing thick leech resistant socks and stocking is advisable to stay safe.

Do we need to book in advance?

While several agencies offer daytime and nocturnal Jeep safari tours in the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary and adjacent regions, it is better to book in advance. In peak seasons, finding safari slots and accommodations can be hard if you do not book a few months in advance.

What are the do's and dont's?

• Animal sightings can be unpredictable even in Jeep Safari and so patience is required.
• Remaining calm and silent enhance your chances of spotting more wildlife species in the Safari.
• Carry plenty of drinking water with you.
• Carry a first aid kit with commonplace medications. Skin ointments for cuts and insect bites should be included in the kit.
• Adhering to the instructions of the tour guide is advisable.
• Wear apt clothing that covers most parts of the body to stay safe from the sun and insects (at night)
• Carry a binocular and camera is helpful in spotting animals hidden in foliage and bushes.
• Do not wear bright and colorful clothes. Refrain from wearing loud perfumes too. These can attract predatory animals!

• Do not smoke while on the Safari and do not carry inflammable articles either.

• Smoking can attract the attention of wild animals and it should not be done.

Its a deep jungle safari to gavi forest , we exploring 100 km inside the forest , tourist can enjoy the wildness of the jungle in a short distance , for this programme tourist can expect animal sighting .

Day trip: 6.00am to 4pm. Total 200 km , 70km Jeep safari inside the jungle .this programme include only safari . food and entrance extra.On the way lucky  one can see wild animals in a short distance .. With in 4KM surroundings of Thekkady ,Pick Up and Drop Free .

Thekkady Waterfalls in Jeep Safari Trekking : If you’re planning trekking in Thekkady to a waterfall then book the jeep safari along with a riverside camping in Thekkady. Thekkady Waterfalls :

Thekkady is famous for Periyar national park but not many people knew about this majestic perennial waterfall that is located in a private property.

To reach this Thekkady waterfall one has to book a jeep safari which takes you through the mesmerizing tea estate. Best thing was this waterfall was located just few kms away from the campsite we stayed.

They charge around Rs.20 as a maintenance fee to keep this Thekkady waterfall clean and neat. When we reached this waterfalls we were awestruck to see and I was excited to shoot this in drone.

Thekkady Camping

If you’re planning to camp in Thekkady as a first time visitor I knew you’d prefer to book a tent stay near Periyar national park. But not many are aware of this beautiful riverside campsite that’s so serene located right next to the river.

Reaching this place itself was a thrilling ride for us because it was around 8:00 P.M when we started towards the campsite. The roads were pitch dark and we were thrilled to encounter wild animals on the way.

The owner of this property gave us a warm welcome and the hospitality was too good. Food was cooked before we reached the property and we arranged special BBQ chicken and sunny side up.

Campfire comes included with their package and so we had lot of fun dancing and singing around it.

They also provided a wonderful breakfast that’s so special and that is Puttu & Kadala also known as Kerala’s local food.

Not only that, there are other traditional things in Kerala which is one of the main reason why we missed the lunch.

Kathakali in Thekkady

Katha means story and Kali means play. So the literal meaning of Kathakali means performing a story as a play.

This is very famous entertainment to see in Thekkady when you visit their famous National park. Along with this there is one more traditional art of Kerala that can be seen here.

Kalaripayattu in Kadanthan Kalari Centre

Kerala’s traditional martial arts which also involves in playing with the fire is a not to miss activity when you visit Thekkady.

This spectacular show can be booked in Kadanthan kalari centre and the timings can be seen from their website.

Here is the itinerary plan to visit Thekkady in 1/2 Days. One of the most visited places by families for the best view on animals on their territory. Last day we planned to spend some time exploring the Gavi – Forest Jeep Ride. Here is our plan and how we covered it in 2 Days.

DAY 1 Thekkady Tour:

• Make sure you reach Thekkady by afternoon.
• Set the destination to  “National Park Ticket Office”  & Verify your boating tickets and pay for the bus trip to boat station.
• Boating on Periyar Lake – Take 1.5hrs
• After completing boating, move next to witness the Kerala’s Ancient Kalari fight at  Kadathanadan Kalari & Navarasa Kathakali Thekkady by 6PM.
• If you wish to watch  Kathakali , you can enjoy the same on here too. Show starts at 7pm.

Head back your room(or TENT) to rest yourself after a long journey. We stayed at a Homestay where they arranged campfire, barbecue grill and party music for us and there is lot more waiting for us the next day. NOTE: Boating Tickets are available online, we recommend you to book tickets online to avoid rush. If you booked online, you can skip some time.

DAY 2 Thekkady Tour:

• Our homestay representative arranged river fishing at the camp site and off-road jeep ride to nearby waterfall ( Mlamala Waterfalls in Thekkady )
• After visiting, waterfall by 12:00 PM have lunch at Thekkady.
• Now start your journey to Gavi , and stop at  “Vallakadavu Forest Check post”.
• Take a Forest Bus ride from the check post before 2.20PM (Last Bus) to explore Gavi.
• After returning, Stop for some shopping at Thekkady Town.
• You can return back to Home or Visit Vagamon (52Kms)
