Time Travel through Vienna

In Vienna city center, go on a virtual journey through the history of Vienna at "Time Travel Vienna".

The location is historical; the ambiance is modern: Go on a journey through the centuries in the vaulted ceilings of St. Michael’s monastery on Habsburgergasse. Your trip begins in a 5D cinema that takes visitors back to the age of Roman Vienna. The program also includes the Black Death in Vienna with plagues of rats (experienced up close!) and the second Turkish siege of Vienna in 1683.

The Emperor Maximilian I., Franz Joseph and his Sisi as well as Maria Theresia (in the form of animatronic figures) are the stars of the "Habsburg Show", which takes a tongue-in-cheek look back at the history of their family. In the plague pit, you can meet the plague doctor as well as "Dear Augustin" in person. In the "Ballroom", Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Johann Strauss deliver a verbal exchange of blows. Carousels and waltz music provide a festive atmosphere.

Other themes include the two world wars and the signing of the State Treaty on 15 May 1955. It ends with an interactive horse-drawn carriage ride through Vienna. The carriage "flies" and rides over the Imperial Palace, Stadtpark, State Opera to Schönbrunn and the Prater.

The total of eight stops are equipped with state-of-the-art show and effects technology. A "tour" lasts around 50 minutes through the virtual 1,300 m² world of history in Vienna’s underground. The show is in German. Special audio guides provide a simultaneous translation of the tour guides as well as the show and film texts (10 languages to choose from).

Visiting Vienna

The Time Travel tour

Time travel sign

Life is incomplete unless you’ve run up to the roof of Vienna’s cathedral, soared across a ballroom, sheltered from an air raid, or relaxed in a plague pit. Just some of the Time Travel tour experiences.

  • A taste of Viennese history & culture
  • More entertainment than education
  • 5D cinematic fun, VR & animatronics
  • Also great for entertaining the children
  • Book your time travel tour ticket * online
  • Vienna with kids

Travel back in time

Time Travel Tour sign

(DeLorean not included)

Not going to lie: I went into this with low expectations. And I came out having rather enjoyed myself. Think of the Time Travel tour as an experience, rather than a tour.

It all takes place in the underground chambers of an ancient monastery (genuinely) right in the centre of Vienna, with around 1300m 2 fitted out with various rooms and tracts containing what we might call edutainment stations.

You walk from one to the next, accompanied by a friendly guide.

Each of the several stops tends to deal with a major event in Viennese history (like WWII) or a theme (like music or painters).

And each involves some kind of immersive technology, whether a simple talk from an animatronic emperor or a full-blown VR and multimedia experience.

Three standout highlights for me:

  • The opening 5D cinema with a film that takes you through (figuratively and literally) key historical moments, such as Roman Vienna, the plague, or the siege of 1683.

Your chair moves, you feel the wind on your face and “enjoy” a particularly impressive sensory surprise (no spoilers) as you scamper up into the roof of Stephansdom cathedral

  • A virtual reality tour through Vienna’s musical history. Find yourself among the dancers in an opulent ballroom, enjoying a drink in a traditional wine tavern, or standing over the shoulder of Mozart at his piano
  • A flying horse and carriage journey above Vienna’s historic buildings, complete with snow, laser effects, and even fireworks

Don’t take it all too seriously and just lean back and enjoy the ride.

Tickets & visitor tips

We got in almost immediately after turning up to buy tickets, but you might want to reserve a time (or book cheaper e-tickets and a time) online during busy months.

(Booking service provided by Tiqets.com*, who I am an affiliate of)

A few tips:

  • The tour guide and tour audio use German, but you get a free headset which gives you exactly the same information and entertainment in English (or a number of other languages)

The audio is timed precisely to match the displays. It worked perfectly on my visit and did not make the experience any less enjoyable.

  • The Time Travel people recently opened up a new location nearby that takes you on a diverting virtual reality boat ride with Empress Elisabeth (bored of court formalities, the empress appears to have taken a second job as a tour guide)
  • Find more suggestions for VR, immersive & interactive experiences in the city here
  • The tour ends in a shop with toys and souvenirs, as well as the chance to get some (fun but cheesy) souvenir photos

After your visit, go north for the Graben pedestrianised street that leads to Stephansdom cathedral to see the real thing. Or go south to reach Michaelerplatz and the start of the Hofburg palace complex .

You’re also close to two of Vienna’s most resonant locations for coffee and cake.

Slip across parallel streets to find Demel (a favoured supplier to Empress Elisabeth) or Hawelka (a traditional second home to Vienna’s artists and intellectuals).

How to get to the tour

Like many sights and activities in Vienna’s city centre, the Time Travel tour is probably already on your walking route around the old town.

Subway: just a short walk from two central stations: Herrengasse (on the U3 line) and Stephansplatz (on the U3 and U1 lines).

Tram/bus: trams don’t come to this part of the town as no tram lines run through the historical heart of the city. The 1A and 2A buses that squeeze their way around the centre both have a stop at Habsburgergasse.

Experience the varied history of Vienna as an interactive, accompanied tour in the historic vaults of the 400-year-old St. Michael Monestary. The past can be felt and experienced using state-of-the-art technology such as a 5D cinema, virtual reality, animatronics and much more. You travel rapidly into the time of the Roman camp Vindobona, follow in the footsteps of the Habsburgs and venture into a plague pit. You will meet the famous composers Mozart and Strauss, find refuge in an original air raid shelter and hear Leopold Figl's famous words "Austria is free". A magical carriage ride takes you back to the present.

Work and Travel in Austria

Help us grow. share what you know about getting work in austria for travellers., volunteer and paid work opportunities in austria for travellers.

Austria is known for its beautiful cities, stunning landscapes, and Mozart. But if you want to do more than your conventional tourist, think about work and travel in Austria . Not only will you have the chance to dig deeper under the surface of the country, work in Austria will allow you to extend your trip for longer and gain some worthwhile experience. It’s not always easy to know where to turn for volunteer opportunities in Austria. However, our travel guide to Austria provides you with everything you need to plan your next trip. 1. Learn about Self-Sufficiency in Austria Outside of the cities, such as in Konigsdorf, the self-sufficiency movement has gained steam. From large country mansions to little farmsteads, Austrians are learning how to fend for themselves. Search for self-sufficiency projects in Austria. Anyone with DIY skills will be in high demand, as well as anyone who knows about gardening. But many projects will also offer you on the job training. 2. Teach English in Austria Many people visit Vienna, Salzburg, and Graz and automatically believe that everyone speaks fluent English. It’s true that the major cities have a high number of English speakers. However, despite Austria’s strong sense of social duty, there’s a real shortage of qualified English teachers in the smaller towns and villages. Do you have what it takes to teach English in Austria? Work in Austria doesn’t require you to know anything but basic German and you’ll be fully supported as you settle in. 3. Go to the Alps as a Ski Instructor Austria’s ski resorts are legendary. Imagine how valuable a season working in one of those ski resorts could be for you. Not only will you gain the perks of free access to some of the best ski slopes in Europe, but you’ll also be able to teach people about the sport. This is invaluable experience that will serve you well on any future job application. It’s one of the best options for work and travel in Austria. Just bear in mind that competition is fierce and you’ll be expected to apply months in advance of the main ski season.

VOLUNTEER WORK VISA / PERMIT REQUIREMENTS FOR AUSTRIA

Travel in Austria requires you to comply with the immigration requirements of the Schengen Zone . That means UK citizens, prior to Brexit, and citizens of other European Union (EU) countries are able to enter and work in Austria without any form of visa. You are able to stay for as long as you like. From outside the Schengen Zone, things start to differ. For example, South Koreans, the Japanese, Australians, Kiwis, and North Americans are required to get a Schengen visa-on-arrival and can only stay for a maximum of 90 days in every 180 days . With Austria being in the heart of EU, visa runs are not a viable option. Furthermore, overstaying your visa means you can be banned from the whole of the EU for many years. For South Africans, Russians, and Chinese citizens there’s no visa-free allowance. They have to apply for a formal Schengen visa prior to their arrival. For more info click here . These visas don’t apply to paid work. If you manage to land a paid job during your stay you will be expected to apply for a work visa. Depending on where you’re from, these can be notoriously difficult to secure.

SEASONAL BACKPACKER SKILLS NEEDED IN AUSTRIA

Spring work.

Spring marks the end of the ski season and the melting of the heavy snows that cover Austria. Many outdoor projects are active at this time of year. For example, you can join in with revitalisation projects that take place within the forests and woods of Austria. Many of these are also active around the Alps, towards the border with Slovenia. This is also a good time of year to be volunteering on a farm. Many farmers in Austria require a lot of help during the planting season.

SUMMER JOBS

Summer in Austria brings glorious sunshine and a whole host of tourists. This is an excellent time to visit the cities of Austria. You can teach English to children as part of a summer camp. It’s also possible to find work in general summer camps, where you will be keeping the kids entertained. Throughout the cities, hostels are crying out for volunteers to help them with the increased workload. The most popular location for this is Vienna, but you can also find a number of roles in Innsbruck, Graz, and Salzburg.

For the autumn season, you should refer back to the ‘Spring’ section for more information. Most of the specialist skills required are the same as the spring. Farm work is a popular option for work in Austria because it’s the harvest season. Farmers also need help preparing their farms and their animals for the winter. If you want to travel in Austria long-term, it’s also an ideal time to try to find teaching jobs with longer contracts in the rural areas.

Austria turns into a winter wonderland at the end of the year. It brings hundreds of thousands of people every year to the Alps. Alpine ski resorts are difficult to secure jobs in, but if you can get one you’ll have a great piece of experience to add to your CV. You can find roles in cleaning, customer service, and working directly on the slopes yourself. The best position for you depends on your previous experience. Ski resorts tend to fill positions months in advance of the ski season itself. Try to apply during the summer and autumn to increase your chances of finding a volunteer opportunity in an Austrian ski resort.

ATTITUDE TO FOREIGNERS WORKING OR VOLUNTEERING IN AUSTRIA

With recent political goings on, it’s easy to think that Austria is less welcoming than it once was. If you travel in Austria today you’ll notice that the media has exaggerated how the country reacts to foreigners. You won’t have any issues fitting into Austrian society during your time here. Austrians are used to foreign visitors and you don’t need to worry about any hostility. Just make sure you’re not breaking the rules of your visa when you take up volunteering opportunities in Austria. Are you ready to take on work in Austria?

She was taller than me. Prettier and with better muscle tone. Shinier hair and perfect skin and teeth. Which was odd because she claimed she was me — from the future.

“Mmmmf!” I said.

“Sorry about the gag. Let me loosen it.”

“What the hell!? You’re here to kill me — won’t that kill you, too?”

She rolled her eyes. “No, it didn’t. I’m here, aren’t I?”

I scoffed. “I might not be a time-travelling assassin supermodel —”

“Yet,” she interjected with a smile.

“— but even I know that’s impossible. It’s a time whatchamacallit … a paradox!”

time travel vienna jobs

Read more science fiction from Nature Futures

She leant forward with a gleam in her eyes like I was 101 puppies, and she was in the market for a winter coat. “Yes, exactly! I need a paradox, a large one. Killing myself is the biggest event I can put into motion at such short notice.”

I struggled against the plastic straps that bound my hands behind my kitchen-table chair. “That doesn’t make any sense!”

“Sorry, I don’t have the time to explain the general theory of paradoxity or walk you through my calculations.”

“Calculations about what?” I asked — as long as I kept her talking, she wasn’t murdering me.

“About how much energy the death will release. Don’t worry — it will have been enough.”

“Energy for what?”

She let out an exasperated sigh. “Let me make it simple: what’s the biggest paradox you’ve heard of?”

“I don’t know — everything I say is a lie? ”

“No, that just means you don’t understand set theory. The greatest one is existence itself: why is there something instead of nothing ? It gave rise to everything, and — together with other, smaller paradoxes — keeps everything going.

“Uh huh,” I said, humouring my future self.

“But those bastards from the CCCCCC — the Chronological Continuum Consistency Coordinated Consortium Confederacy — are obsessed with timescape integrity . They’ve pushed my team back everywhen, undoing our efforts to make the timeline a better place to live in. They will even make sure World War Three — which we’d managed to avoid, you’re welcome — will begin right on time next Tuesday. I need to finish them once and for all. They’re out of control. They’ll go too far back; undo the Paradox of Life itself —”

“Life’s a paradox?”

“Duh!” — I hadn’t realized how obnoxious it is when I do that — “Why else would dumb, entropic matter organize itself into something that can laugh, love and fart?”

I looked around and saw an old family picture. “Why kill me? Wouldn’t killing somebody like … not mum or dad, um … would grandma Georgina work? We never liked her.”

“No, we didn’t. Remember the haircut incident in third grade?” She chuckled softly. “But no, sorry, it must be me, or it won’t have enough juice. A tight timeloop like this should release ten-to-the-twelfth-power chronojoules. The CCCCCC bastards will never see it coming!”

I grasped for something, anything to distract her. “Aren’t you supposed to be older? Why do you look better than me?”

She looked down at her body. “It’s a back-echo of the energy release. It rearranges nearby systems into their optimal state. And this,” she waved at herself, “is more optimal than, well, that.” She pointed at me.

“Thanks so much for taking the time to insult me before killing me.”

“No problem.” She looked at some glowing numbers on her wrist. “This will have been fun but time has run out of time — we have to do this now.”

She pulled out a knife and slipped behind me.

“Stop!” I said, but she didn’t. I felt something shift and fell forward. There was a flash of something much brighter than ordinary light could ever be.

My hands weren’t tied behind me any more. I leapt up, trying to remember the three weeks of taekwondo I’d taken back in high school — and hoping she didn’t. I turned and saw a hotter version of myself lying on the floor with a gash on the side of her throat. Blood was spreading out on the white carpet my ex-boyfriend had picked out. Good, I never liked it, or him — wait, why was I still breathing?

I looked down — my body had changed. I looked like her now. I felt the energy and knowledge move through me. I knew what I had to do — fight those bastards from the CCCCCC and win.

There was just one thing I didn’t understand. I knelt beside her. “This doesn’t make any sense. I thought you had to kill me?”

She looked up with a small, weak smile. I leant in to hear her say, “If it made sense, it wouldn’t be a paradox, would it?”

The story behind the story

Rodrigo Culagovski reveals the inspiration behind The real time-travel paradox was the friends we made along the way .

My offspring and I love to watch superhero team TV series. They usually feature some — or a lot — of time travel, and are full of plot holes and paradoxes, to the point where we joke that time-travel paradoxes are their real super power.

I’m also a member of Codex, an SFF writers community. We hold flash-fiction contests twice a year. Last year, one of the prompts was “Road trip! Where are you going and who are you bringing with?” I didn’t use it as is, but it got me thinking of my favourite snowclone, “The Real X Was the Friends We Made Along the Way”.

This story is the love child of these two ideas.

Vienna city council votes to enact pay raise three months early.

VIENNA — Vienna City Council unanimously voted during Thursday’s regular meeting to instate a $1.65 an hour raise for full-time and part-time nonseasonal employees starting April 1.

The resolution stated all current full-time permanent employees, excluding law enforcement officers, will receive a $1.65 per hour pay raise. All current, non-seasonal, part-time employees will also receive a $1.65 per hour increase.

The longevity pay of 35 cents for full-time employees will remain the same.

It also stated that all new hire full-time employees, excluding law enforcement officers, will receive a $2 per hour starting pay increase.

Councilmember Kim Williams said she supported the raise and she hoped it would allow Public Works Director Craig Metz to recruit applicants.

“The starting salary in his department is $14.89 (an hour). So, he would be able to increase that by $2 right now. So that would help him hopefully get some good applicants and find him some folks. He’s down four people with retirements on the horizon,” she said.

Finance Director Amy Roberts said the starting pay increase would make Vienna Public Works competitive with Parkersburg.

“The idea was to get the starting wage to $16.89, when Parkersburg Utility Board starts at $16.74, so we feel like that is competitive in the area that we are searching,” she said.

Roberts said law enforcement officers weren’t included due to a $2.88 per hour raise being passed by council Aug. 10, 2023.

Council member Tom Azinger was absent.

Who owns the ship that struck the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore?

By Megan Cerullo

Edited By Anne Marie Lee

Updated on: March 26, 2024 / 5:05 PM EDT / CBS News

The collapse of  Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge on Tuesday after being struck by a cargo ship has raised questions about who owns and manages the ship, as well as on the potential impact on one the busiest ports in the U.S.

Called the Dali, the 948-foot vessel that hit the bridge is managed by Synergy Marine Group, a Singapore-based company with over 660 ships under management around the world, according to its website . The group said the ship was operated by charter vessel company Synergy Group and chartered by Danish shipping giant Maersk at the time of the incident, which sent vehicles and people tumbling into the Patapsco River.

"We are horrified by what has happened in Baltimore, and our thoughts are with all of those affected," Maersk said in a statement to CBS News Tuesday, in which it also confirmed the ship was carrying cargo for Maersk customers. The company had no crew or personnel aboard the ship.

The Dali, which can carry up to 10,000 twenty-foot equivalent units, or TEUs, was carrying nearly 4,700 containers at the time of the collision. It was operated by a 22-person, Indian crew. It was not immediately clear what kind of cargo the ship was carrying.

Who owns and manages the Dali?

The Dali is owned by Grace Ocean Private, a Singapore-based company that provides water transportation services. The ship was chartered by Danish container shipping company Maersk at the time of the collision.

Synergy Marine, founded in 2006, provides a range of ship management services, including managing ships' technical components and their crews and overseeing safety, according to S&P Capital IQ. Its parent company, Unity Group Holdings International, an investment holding company, was founded in 2008 and is based in Hong Kong.

Where was the ship headed?

The outbound ship had left Baltimore and was headed for Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka, Synergy Marine Group said in a  press release .

How busy is the Port of Baltimore?

In 2023, the Port of Baltimore handled a record 52.3 million tons of foreign cargo, worth $80 billion, according  to the office of Maryland Gov. Wes Moore. The port is also a significant provider of local jobs.

The top port in the U.S. for sugar and gypsum imports, it is the ninth busiest U.S. port by the total volume and value of foreign cargo handled. All vessel traffic into and out of the facility is currently suspended, although the port remains open and trucks continue to be processed within the its terminals, according to a statement release by Port of Baltimore officials.

What is the potential local economic impact?

Directly, the port supports 15,300 jobs, while another 140,000 in the area are related to port activities. The jobs provide a combined $3.3 billion in personal income, according to a CBS News report . The Port of Baltimore said Tuesday that it is unclear how long ship traffic will be suspended.

The disaster also caused chaos for local drivers. The Maryland Transportation Authority said all lanes were closed in both directions on I-695, with traffic being detoured to I-95 and I-895.

How could the bridge collapse affect consumers and businesses?

Experts say the bridge collapse could cause significant supply chain disruptions.

"While Baltimore is not one of the largest U.S. East Coast ports, it still imports and exports more than 1 million containers each year, so there is the potential for this to cause significant disruption to supply chains," Emily Stausbøll, a market analyst at Xeneta, an ocean and air freight analytics platform, said in a statement.

She added that freight services from Asia to the East Coast in the U.S. have already been hampered by drought in the Panama Canal, as well as risks related to conflict in the Red Sea. Nearby ports, including those in New York, New Jersey and Virginia, will be relied on to handle more shipments if Baltimore remains inaccessible.

Whether ocean freight shipping rates will rise dramatically, potentially affecting consumers as retailers pass along higher costs, will depend on how much extra capacity the alternate ports can handle, Stausbøll said. "However, there is only so much port capacity available and this will leave supply chains vulnerable to any further pressure."

Marty Durbin, senior vice president of policy at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, said that the bridge is a critical connector of "people, businesses, and communities."

"Unfortunately, its prolonged closure will likely disrupt commercial activities and supply chains that rely on the bridge and Port of Baltimore each day," he said in a statement.

What other industries could be affected?

Trucking companies could be severely affected by the disaster.

"Aside from the obvious tragedy, this incident will have significant and long-lasting impacts on the region," American Trucking Associations spokesperson Jessica Gail said, calling Key Bridge and Baltimore's port "critical components'' of the nation's infrastructure.

Gail noted that 1.3 million trucks cross the bridge every year — 3,600 a day. Trucks that carry hazardous materials will now have to make 30 miles of detours around Baltimore because they are prohibited from using the city's tunnels, she said, adding to delays and increasing fuel costs.

"Time-wise, it's going to hurt us a lot," added Russell Brehm, the terminal manager in Baltimore for Lee Transport, which trucks hazardous materials such as petroleum products and chemicals. The loss of the bridge will double to two hours the time it takes Lee to get loads from its terminal in Baltimore's Curtis Bay to the BJ's gasoline station in the waterfront neighborhood of Canton, he estimated.

Cruise operators are also being affected. A Carnival cruise ship that set off Sunday for the Bahamas had been scheduled to return to Baltimore on March 31. Carnival said Tuesday it is "currently evaluating options for Carnival Legend's scheduled return on Sunday." The company also has cruises scheduled to set sail from Baltimore through the summer.

Norwegian Cruise Line last year introduced new routes departing from the Port of Baltimore. Its sailings are scheduled for late this year. The company said the Key Bridge collapse doesn't immediately require it to reroute any ships.

Who will pay to rebuild the bridge?

President Biden said Tuesday that the federal government, with congressional support, would pay to rebuild the bridge.

"We're going to work with our partners in Congress to make sure the state gets the support it needs. It's my intention that the federal government will pay for the entire cost of reconstructing that bridge," Biden said in comments from the White House. "And I expect the Congress to support my effort. This is going take some time. The people of Baltimore can count on us though, to stick with them, at every step of the way, till the port is reopened and the bridge is rebuilt."

What we know about Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse

The Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore collapsed early Tuesday after being hit by a cargo ship, with large parts of the bridge falling into the Patapsco River.

At least eight people fell into the water, members of a construction crew working on the bridge at the time, officials said. Two were rescued, one uninjured and one in serious condition, and two bodies were recovered on Wednesday. The remaining four are presumed dead. The workers are believed to be the only victims in the disaster.

Here’s what we know so far.

Baltimore bridge collapse

Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed after being hit by a cargo ship , sending at least eight people from a construction crew into the water. Follow live updates and see photos from the scene .

How it happened: The container ship lost power shortly before hitting the bridge, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore (D) said. Video shows the bridge collapse in under 40 seconds.

Victims: Divers recovered the bodies of two construction workers who died , while finding other vehicles trapped and probably containing the other victims, officials said. They were fathers, husbands and hard workers . The entire crew aboard the container ship Dali survived . First responders shut down most traffic on the four-lane bridge after the crew issued an urgent mayday call. It saved lives, Moore said.

Economic impact: The collapse of the bridge, which severed ocean links to the Port of Baltimore, adds a fresh headache to already struggling global supply chains . See how the collapse will disrupt the supply of cars, coal and other goods .

History: The Key Bridge was built in the 1970s and spanned the Patapsco River. Rebuilding the bridge will probably take years and cost hundreds of millions of dollars, experts said.
