Explore Knowsley Safari: Wildlife Adventures & Conservation Tips

Embarking on a Knowsley Safari adventure is like stepping into a world where the wild roams free and the thrills are as vast as the plains of Africa. Nestled in the heart of Merseyside, this gem offers an unparalleled glimpse into the lives of majestic animals, and I’m here to share the roar of the lions and the whisper of the grass with you.

From the comfort of your car, you’ll weave through a 5-mile route that promises encounters with creatures great and small. It’s not just a drive; it’s a journey through habitats that are as close to the natural world as you’ll get without a passport. And trust me, the sights and sounds are as authentic as they come.

Whether you’re a wildlife enthusiast or seeking a unique family day out, Knowsley Safari beckons with open paws. I’ve explored its paths and have the inside scoop on making the most of this wild experience. Let’s dive into the heart of the safari and discover why it’s a must-visit destination.

Safari Adventure at Knowsley

Embarking on the Knowsley Safari Adventure has always been at the top of my must-do list. Liverpool isn’t just about the bustling city life; it’s home to one of the most thrilling wildlife experiences in the UK. My journey began as I ventured into the 550-acre park, primed to meet some of the wild’s most spectacular creatures .

The moment I entered the gates, I was transported into another world—an untamed wilderness within reach. Lions roared in the distance, a sound that sent shivers down my spine yet filled me with excitement. Driving along the well-maintained roads, I was greeted by curious baboons that seemed to take as much interest in me as I did in them.

Throughout the 5-mile route, the safari unfolded a series of engaging encounters:

  • Majestic rhinos grazing peacefully
  • Elegant giraffes towering above the vehicles
  • Playful meerkats scampering in their habitat

One behind-the-wheel tip I’ve learned is to keep the windows up in certain zones; it’s the best way to respect the animals’ space while still getting an up-close view. Luckily, Knowsley’s commitment to conservation and animal welfare was evident, ensuring a guilt-free experience for visitors like me who care about the ethical aspects of animal interactions.

As I continued my adventure, I couldn’t help but marvel at the seamless immersion into the animals’ worlds—each encounter carefully designed to educate and inspire. Whether it’s witnessing the striking stripes of a zebra or catching the elusive glare of a stealthy wolf, every moment here adds to an unforgettable narrative of wildlife conservation and education.

Exploring the 5-mile Route

As I ventured deeper into Knowsley Safari, the excitement heightened with each turn of the 5-mile route. It’s not just a drive; it’s a journey through diverse habitats, each thoughtfully designed to mimic the natural environments of the resident animals. Safari parks like Knowsley have transformed the way we experience wildlife, allowing for up-close encounters with creatures both from afar and close to home.

  • Lion territory was a thrilling highlight, with the pride’s sheer presence commanding attention. They basked in the sun, exhibiting regal demeanour worthy of the ‘King of the Jungle’ title.
  • The elephant compound boasted gentle giants, whose intelligent eyes seemed to study us curiously as we passed by.

Despite the temptation, it’s critical to remember safety protocols throughout the drive. Certain areas necessitate strict adherence to rules, a reminder that while these animals are accessible, they’re still wild at heart. Engaging informative signs dot the landscape, offering intriguing facts about the animals and their ecosystems as we meander along the route.

Education here is as effortless as it is engaging. My understanding of wildlife habitats and conservation efforts grew profoundly, and I can’t help but feel a sense of responsibility to support these causes. Knowsley Safari not only creates a fun day out but also instills a lasting appreciation for nature.

Immersive Wildlife Encounters

As I ventured deeper into Knowsley Safari, the immersive experiences with wildlife became incredibly raw and memorable. Face-to-face interactions with exotic animals aren’t just possible—they’re a guarantee. An encounter with the basking lions took my breath away, their manes glistening in the sunlight as they surveyed their domain with an unrivalled majesty.

Taking in this spectacle, I couldn’t help but feel overawed; it’s an authentic slice of the African savannah nestled right here in Merseyside.

  • Zebras trotting idly by my vehicle
  • A gang of cheeky baboons causing mischief
  • The serenity of a silent owl perched stealthily atop a tree

These encounters brought the intricate web of Knowsley’s ecosystem to life, touching upon the delicate balance of nature. Each species, from the flighty birds to the plodding pachyderms, plays a vital part in the tapestry of life here.

Informative signs dotted along the path offered snippets of information, enhancing the experience. I discovered that Knowsley actively participates in European breeding programmes , working to ensure a future for some of the planet’s most endangered species. Knowing this made the sights before me all the more profound – a reminder that every visit supports these crucial efforts.

As I quietly observed a family of elephants at a waterhole, it’s clear that education and conservation form the heart and soul of Knowsley Safari.

Natural Habitats at Knowsley

As I delve deeper into Knowsley Safari, I’m struck by the authentic environments created for each species. It’s evident that maintaining natural habitats is a priority here. The sprawling savannah home to the majestic lions and prancing antelopes makes me feel like I’m on a mini African expedition.

The walkaround area, too, impresses with its lush greenery where birds of prey perch with an almost regal presence. Efforts to mimic natural environments aid in the conservation of these species and provide an enriched life, similar to their wild counterparts.

  • Realistic landscapes for animals
  • European breeding programmes support
  • Enrichment activities enhance well-being

Knowsley’s dedication to replicating these habitats is evident not just in the visuals but also in their behavioural enrichment programmes . Animals engage in activities that promote their natural instincts, ensuring they remain mentally and physically stimulated. This proactive approach sets a standard for wildlife parks globally, advocating for the preservation of animal welfare and biodiversity.

Making the Most of Your Visit

Visiting Knowsley Safari near Liverpool is a unique experience that’s both thrilling and educational. I’ve found that to truly make the most of the visit, it’s essential to plan ahead . Checking the times for shows and talks in advance ensures that I don’t miss out on learning sessions which are packed with fascinating facts about the animals and their habits.

I always recommend arriving early. Not only does this help to beat the crowds , but it also provides the chance to see the park’s inhabitants when they’re most active. Early morning visits often reward me with sights of the animals enjoying their first meal of the day or engaging in playful interactions.

Another tip I’ve discovered is to take advantage of the Safari Drive option. Cruising through the reserves at my own pace allows for up-close animal sightings. Having my camera at the ready means I can capture those unexpected moments, like a cheeky baboon leaping onto the car or a majestic lion lounging by the roadside.

Lastly, staying hydrated and packing snacks are crucial, especially on sunny days. There’s plenty to cover on foot within the park, and maintaining energy levels is key. I always keep a refillable water bottle and some light bites in my bag to keep me going throughout the day.

Visiting Knowsley Safari has been an enlightening experience that’s both thrilling and educational. Feeling the thrill of close encounters with majestic wildlife and learning about conservation efforts firsthand has truly deepened my appreciation for these creatures and the work being done to protect them. "Exploring the Wonders of Knowsley Safari Park: A Family-Friendly Adventure"

knowsley safari park virgin experience

As a family of five, days out can become expensive, so when I spotted Knowsley Safari Park had a special offer running we decided to take advantage. The offer of one child under 16 goes free for every full paying adult runs until 29th February.

We paid for our own tickets

We visited Knowsley Safari   on Tuesday, during school term so it wasn't busy.

For more great ideas, check us out on Facebook ,  Instagram

Did you know that most of my content is brought to you with no financial incentive? If you appreciate my posts, why not buy me a virtual coffee?

We booked online and kids under 16 go free with a paying adult (it's one child per adult) so yesterday's visit was only around £53 this was with a guide book which you can choose at the checkout.

I have to say I was really impressed with this Zoo. The animals look like they are all well looked after, the enclosures are absolutely huge and the place is spotless. However this was comparing it to a recent trip to an awful zoo that we had in January. Don't get me wrong there was a few issues with our visit to Knowsley which you can read about further down, but there's also lots of good.

We arrived around 10.30 to find only one kiosk was open which was causing a nightmare, after 10 minutes they opened up a second kiosk.

You follow the road round and you can either go straight onto the safari drive or you can park up and go on the foot safari, either way there are toilet options for both.

We headed round the safari drive first which took us around 40 mins, however this could have been longer if the Africa section was open. We were told that this would be open for 11.30 However we headed back for 1.30 and it was still closed! Other than the staff manning the lion section there was no staff to be seen to ask.

We also decided not to do the baboon drive because your car will get damaged and it's just a headache I don't want, we would have taken the bus if that had been running but it wasn't.

Baboons are very naughty so really think about it before you decide to go in, in your own vehicle because you will have damage to your car. Note I said WILL not Might.

The car friendly route takes in lots of lovely animals including various types of deer, bison, Iberian Wolves, lions, camels and lots more. The space they have is a lot and at times we went without seeing anything which I thought was a bit boring to be honest. However what we did see we really enjoyed especially the lions. Please make sure you read the rules and you stick to them. Do not get out of your car no matter what.

We then headed into the foot safari which was fantastic. It has so many things to read and hands on displays to get involved with. Lots of educational material and Elliot really enjoyed learning about the animals.

We did the tiger trail first which was great. Lots of info boards and the tigers came right up to us, one even tried to attack us so we walked away from it because we didn't want to wind it up and stress it out. Something must have been happening because they were pacing and were very angry. The enclosures are pretty big with lots of enrichment which was fantastic to see and we were fascinated watching one of the tigers scent mark and just generally having a wander exploring. They looked like they were in great condition and they are probably the best Tigers we have encountered in a zoo. The experience was definitely one we wont forget in a hurry

From here we just followed the path, you can't get lost as you have a map that you are given when you enter and there's plenty of signage about. There are info boards for every animal and you can also find some interactive and hands on activities dotted around the zoo to get involved in.

We also had food whilst we were here, which was reasonably priced and the staff were great, going above and beyond. We went for 3 Chicken Burgers which were huge and 2 Pulled pork ciabattas both with fries. The only thing that let it down were the drinks which were limited to tea, coffee or standard fizzy drinks. The portions were large ( I have seen people moan that portion sizes were small, but honestly they are not.)

On our visit the shop, amusement rides and the nature trail were closed for maintenance ready to open for half term but from what I could see the rides looked great. Again no mention of anything other than the amusement rides being closed which were on the website. I love getting a fridge magnet and other trinkets from the places we visit so I was a bit disappointed that the shop was closed.

Would we visit again? Yes we would visit again, we had a great day and can see how you can easily spend a full day here.

History of Knowsley Safari Park

Knowsley Safari Park has a fascinating history that dates back to its establishment in 1971 by the 18th Earl of Derby, Edward Stanley. Inspired by a visit to a safari park in Kenya, Lord Derby was determined to bring a similar experience to the heart of England.

The park started with humble beginnings, originally opening as a traditional zoo with a limited number of animal enclosures. However, Lord Derby had grand visions for the park and wanted to create a more immersive and interactive experience for visitors. Over the years, the park underwent significant expansions and renovations to transform it into the safari park it is today.

In 1994, Knowsley Safari Park introduced the drive-through safari experience, allowing visitors to explore the park from the comfort of their own vehicles. This unique concept revolutionized the park and attracted visitors from far and wide, wanting to experience the thrill of encountering wild animals up close.

Since then, Knowsley Safari Park has continued to evolve and expand. New habitats and enclosures have been created to ensure the animals have the best possible living conditions. The park has also introduced a range of educational programs and initiatives to increase awareness about wildlife conservation and the importance of protecting endangered species.

The park has successfully bred numerous endangered animals, including European bison, Przewalski’s horses, and Amur tigers, among others.

Throughout its history, Knowsley Safari Park has remained dedicated to providing a memorable and educational experience for visitors while prioritizing the welfare and conservation of the animals in its care. Knowsley Local History

  • History – Knowsley Village
  • Knowsley Village

In the Domesday Book of 1086, Knowsley was known as Chenulveslei, becoming Knuvesle in 1199; Knouselegh in 1258; Knouleslee in 1261; Knusele in 1262; and Knouslegh in 1346. The pronunciation varies between ‘Nowsley’ and ‘Nosely’.

The village of Knowsley developed as a direct result of the Lathom/Stanley family, better known as the Earls of Derby with their vast estate and residence at Knowsley Hall . The manors of Knowsley, Roby, Huyton and Tarbock were all held by the Lathom family before the year 1200. The small local community which by 1900 had only reached 1,325 residents in the main relied upon Knowsley Park directly or indirectly for their livelihood.

A chapel may have existed here in the 12th Century but one certainly existed by 1398 when Thomas del Ryding was Vicar of Huyton. The likely location of this chapel was on Riding Hill within the vast Knowsley Park. For centuries, marriages and funerals of the local inhabitants took place at either nearby Huyton Parish Church or Prescot Parish Church until Knowsley eventually became its own independent parish.

Knowsley Parish Church located on Knowsley Lane was dedicated to St. Mary the Virgin and was built between 1841-1844. The building was consecrated by John Birch, Bishop of Chester on 6th June 1844. The church which cost £20,000 to build, was paid for by the 13th Earl of Derby and since its construction has gained many interesting features to its interior.

In 1871 a memorial chapel to the memory of the 14th Earl was built by public subscription. In the Derby Chapel is an effigy of the 14th Earl, who was born at Knowsley in 1799 and was buried there in 1869.

In 1923, on the north wall of the chancel and sanctuary, a mosaic was constructed, this being a gift of the 17th Earl, in memory of his father. There is also an oak bench which dates from the 17th Century and on the wall facing the north porch is a 16th Century carved wooden ‘Coat of Arms’. Within the church are also some beautiful examples of stained glass windows.

Although three former Earls and their wives are buried in the family vault inside the church, due to flooding, more recent burials of the Stanley family have taken place in the Derby Plot within the churchyard, close to the lychgate. The last Derby burial being that of Edward John Stanley, 18th Earl, who died in 1994.

A little further north of St. Mary’s Church is the village green which in times past included the village maypole, the area being known now as the Knowsley Triangle. Buildings positioned around the triangle are the former girls’ school of 1845 which in recent years was in use as the Millbrook Manor restaurant but is currently being converted to residential use; the Maypole farmhouse which dates from 1727 (once also an inn of that name) and Knowsley Village Hall opened in 1897, a gift of 16th Earl of Derby. On the triangular green itself, stands the impressive Knowsley War Memorial which was erected in 1920 commemorating those connected with the parish who gave their lives during the Great War.

Knowsley Village retains much of its 19th Century charm today with an abundance of typical estate cottages, its former post office building and next door, alms houses which bear a plaque in memory of Frederick Arthur, 16th Earl who died in 1908. The Derby Arms public house in Knowsley Lane, bears reference to the Lords of the manor, whilst another public house the Pipe and Gannex in Sugar Lane, was named after the former Prime Minister and Labour Party M.P., the late Harold Wilson. Sugar Lane, was also the location of Knowsley Branch Library which opened in June 1976. Although the library closed in the 1990s, the village is now served by the borough’s mobile library, with the branch library at Stockbridge Village close by.

Industry in Knowsley is represented by the southern portion of Knowsley Industrial Park which is split by the A580 East Lancashire Road which runs east – west across the township. The M57 Motorway providing the north-south road link.

In the south of the township is the 360 acre site of Knowsley Safari Park owned by Lord Derby which was opened in 1971 and is Knowsley Borough’s primary tourist attraction providing a chance to see a large variety of wild animals including tigers, lions and elephants at close quarters in their large enclosures.

In 1974, Knowsley township became part of the Metropolitan Borough of Knowsley .

Dinosaur fans will love the convincing animated puppets, which are full body (no visible human legs!) and visible from all angles, creating the most realistic illusion and the closest thing to encountering a real-life dinosaur.

Stephanie Costello, Events Manager, Knowsley Safari says:

“We’re excited to be bringing dinosaurs to the Safari this summer, the activities and adventures will appeal to all ages, and we can’t wait to see guests’ reactions to this truly immersive and life-like experience!”
