The Travel Oracle

How to Play Travel Bingo

Ah the weather! One minute it’s 80. The next minute, it’s 30. And you’re stuck in the Harrisburg, Pennsylvania Airport because New York City was having a tornado…or two. Yeah, yeah, I AM all about the environment and how horrible climate change is. But I’ll be honest, Harrisburg is no NYC, even if they have a Subway restaurant. And it’s easy to get B-O-R-E-D just waiting around when your flight is delayed. So let us share with you a fun game you can employ when you travel. This week we’ll show you how to play travel bingo. This week…it’s the “Bad Traveler” edition.

The Overall Rules of the Game

Just like in regular bingo , the first person to 5 wins. You can keep track of your progress on just one hand. All you need is to be is quick, observant and louder that your fellow contestants. The prize…well, I think it makes even going to the airport an extra fun part of the journey.

Round 1 – Bad Travelers at the Airport

The not-so-fun family.

You’ll most likely meet this crew as soon as you enter the airport.

  • The father – wrangling at least 8 pieces of luggage and some sort of awkward baby gear, like a car seat or travel play pen
  • The mother – already disheveled after getting her brood road ready, with a sleeping infant swaddled against her body, holding the hand of a toddler in full melt down
  • Infant – completely oblivious to all the money and effort her parents expended to make this “special” memory
  • Toddler – in full melt down because he wanted to wear his red shoes, not his blue ones
  • Next oldest sibling – dutifully pulling her own suit case while trying not to get lost in the crowd

And that, my dear readers, is what you call a “Not-so-Fun Family” road block. Good luck juking them to get to the self tagging bag kiosk.

The Roaming Sleepover

You will meet the Roaming Sleepover as you make your way to the CNN shop to grab a bottle of water. This pair of travelers sport pajamas, neck pillows, slippers and au-currant bed-head hair styles. They may be on a REALLY long leg of their flight. Or they may have arrived at the airport in that condition. You may never really know.

Woman yawning with messy hair

The Flatulent Fast Foodie

I’m not sure if you can call it “winning” when you run into this traveler on the airplane. As you’re making sure your seat is in the upright position, your nose tells you that something is wrong. Very wrong. As you look around, you see your seat mate brought an entire happy meal along for the ride. Not to disparage Mickey Dees – this meal might likely be from any number of the restaurants on site. You hope it doesn’t have too much garlic. But if it doesn’t then…what WAS that smell??

McDonalds French fries

The Trick or Treat, Smell my Feet

Now this traveler has never read ONE article about travel etiquette or what an absolutely TERRIBLE idea it is to remove your shoes on a flight. Not only may you offend your seat mate, due to the altitude and pressure, your feet may swell up and your shoes may have to be carried to your next destination.

The Crouching Carousel Crowder

Finally, as your heading down to get your bags, you’ll spot this crazy crowder standing right next to the conveyor belt, attempting to get their bag before anyone has a chance to steal it and run away! If you’re anything like me, and believe in leaving space, know this traveler will stand in the 12 inch gap between you and the machinery. If they get their bag first, they will feel like they’ve won. And of course, since LaGuardia only has the ONE taxi…they can lift their hands in victory. (In case you’re humor impaired, that was sarcasm!)

Keep your kids entertained on your next family vacation with this fun printable Travel Bingo game!

As you know we do a lot of traveling with our kids. This often means hours traveling with 3 small kids in a small confined space. We have found that a key to smooth travel days with our kids is making sure we are prepared. Each of our kids always travels with their own Travel bag filled with snacks and entertainment essentials (like a Kindle loaded with movies, games, and apps along with headphones). You can learn more about how to set up the perfect kids Travel bags here.

In addition to their individual travel bags, we have found that its a great idea (especially for Car Travel days) to have some other fun games for the whole family to enjoy together. I am currently working on creating some game binders for our car but to start with I had my husband create some fun Travel Bingo cards.

You can either print out new pages for each trip so the kids can use a pen or pencil to mark off each square or laminate them so the same cards can be used over and over again with dry/wet erase markers or crayons. Personally, I plan to laminate mine.

The Best part of Travel Bingo is that it can be played along for fun or together with the whole family. It can also be played two different ways.

  • You can play in the car, marking off each square as you see each of the signs.
  • We have provided a page cut out squares with all the bingo signs as well as tokens so you can play in the traditional manner.

My husband went a little over board with all the different variations for this Bingo set.  The PDF has 19 printables pages (including tokens and bingo cut out icons) with 30 different half page sized Bingo boards. This printable game is ready to print at home or at your local copy center. But That just means you have more play variations!

  • What is Travel Bingo?

Travel Bingo

Travel Bingo is a game that adds an element of fun and engagement to long car rides or journeys. It’s a variation of traditional bingo that is adapted for travel. The game typically involves creating bingo cards with items or landmarks commonly found along the route or at the travel destination.

Travel Bingo sets usually include bingo sheets, pencils, and a game board that can be reused for multiple trips

Each player gets a bingo card, which is a grid with different items or scenarios related to travel. These items can include things like a red car, a gas station, a specific road sign, a certain type of animal, or any other relevant element to the journey. As players spot these items during the trip, they mark them off on their cards.

The goal, similar to traditional bingo, is to complete a row or a specific pattern on the card by spotting all the items in that row or pattern. The first person to complete the pattern calls out “Bingo!” and is declared the winner.

There can also be a second winner if someone then goes on to complete the entire card during the course of the journey.

Travel Bingo is a great way to keep passengers entertained during long trips, and it encourages observation and engagement with the surroundings. It can be customized for different age groups and preferences, making it a versatile and enjoyable travel game.

  • Dice-based Travel Bingo : This variation comes with ten dice featuring objects that might be seen while driving, such as animals, vehicles, and buildings. Players roll the dice into the
  • Classic Travel Bingo Game : This game set includes bingo sheets with common sights to search for while on the road, such as a gas station, restaurant, smokestack, water tower, bird on a wire, flag, and traffic signal. The set includes four different Bingo game pads and four pencils. It is designed to make road trips more fun for the whole family and helps develop observational and simple logic skills.
  • Road Trip Bingo Cards : There are free road trip bingo cards available for download and printing, which can be used to entertain kids or adults on a long drive. This variation is suitable for road trips and car journeys.
  • Original Travel Bingo : This is a game board that can be used over and over for miles of fun. It is perfect for long stretches of open highway and comes with one bingo board. This variation was released in the 1950s and is still popular today.

  • Brewery or Winery Bingo: If your route takes you through regions known for their breweries or wineries, create cards with items like a brewery tour sign, a vineyard, or a craft beer label.
  • Cityscape Bingo: If you’re traveling through cities, include items like skyscrapers, public art installations, or famous street names.
  • Music Festival Bingo: If you’re heading to a music festival or an event with live performances, create cards with musical instruments, concert venues, or specific genres of music.
  • Photography Bingo: Focus on visual elements that would make for great photographs, such as unique architecture, street art, or picturesque landscapes.

Remember to tailor the bingo cards to the specific interests and preferences of the adults playing the game. You can easily create these cards yourself or find pre-made ones online that suit the theme of your journey.

How to make a diy travel bingo game

Creating a DIY Travel Bingo game is a fun and creative way to customize the game to suit your specific journey and the interests of the players. Here’s a step-by-step guide to making your own Travel Bingo game:

Materials Needed:

  • Paper: Use cardstock or a thicker paper for durability.
  • Markers or Pens: For drawing or writing on the bingo cards.
  • Ruler and Pencil: For drawing grid lines.
  • Stickers or Images: To represent items on the bingo cards.
  • Laminator (optional): To protect the cards from wear and tear.
  • Choose a theme for your Travel Bingo game based on the interests of the players or the nature of your journey. Themes could include landmarks, nature, culinary experiences, etc.
  • Make a list of items or scenarios related to your chosen theme. For example, if you’re doing landmark bingo, your list could include specific landmarks or historical sites.
  • Use a ruler and pencil to draw a grid on the paper. A traditional bingo card has 5×5 squares.
  • In each square, either draw or write the items from your list. Be creative and use stickers or printed images for a visual touch.
  • Create multiple unique bingo cards with a different arrangement of items on each card. This ensures that each player has a different card for variety.
  • Include a “Free Space” in the center of each bingo card. This space is automatically marked, giving players a head start.
  • If you have access to a laminator, consider laminating the bingo cards for added durability, especially if you plan to reuse them for future trips.
  • Players will need something to mark off the items on their cards. You can use small items like buttons, coins, or create custom markers.
  • Include simple instructions on how to play the game. Explain the goal (e.g., complete a row, column, or diagonal) and any specific rules.
  • Before your journey, test the cards to ensure that the chosen items are observable and realistic for the route you’ll be taking.
  • Enjoy the Game:
  • Distribute the cards to the players, and enjoy playing Travel Bingo during your trip!

Remember to tailor the game to the preferences and interests of the players, and feel free to get creative with the design and content of the bingo cards.

Some other car games to play on a road trip

  • Try to spot license plates from as many different states or countries as possible.
  • One person thinks of an object, and the others have 20 chances to guess what it is by asking yes-or-no questions.
  • Choose an object within sight, and say, “I spy with my little eye, something that is [color/shape/etc.].” Others try to guess the object.
  • Find words on signs or license plates that start with each letter of the alphabet in order.
  • Take turns singing along to your favorite songs. Create a road trip playlist before you leave.
  • Take turns posing “Would you rather” questions to the group. For example, “Would you rather have the ability to fly or be invisible?”
  • Each passenger has a virtual $20 to “spend” during the trip. They “spend” by spotting items on their side of the road. For example, a cow might cost $1, a red car $5, etc.
  • Use story cubes (dice with images) to inspire creativity. Take turns incorporating the images into a collaborative story.
  • Create bingo cards with items related to the journey and see who can complete a row or pattern first.
  • Start with a movie title (e.g., “Jurassic Park”). The next person has to name an actor from that movie (e.g., Jeff Goldblum). The game continues with the next person naming a movie featuring Jeff Goldblum.
  • One person says a word, and the next person has to say a word that rhymes. Keep going until someone can’t come up with a rhyme.
  • Go through the alphabet, taking turns naming animals that start with each letter.
  • Use the numbers on license plates to create mathematical equations. For example, if a license plate reads “452,” you could say “4 + 5 – 2 = 7.”
  • When someone spots a Volkswagen Beetle, they can call out “Punch Buggy” and lightly punch another passenger. Just be sure to establish rules for how hard the punches can be!

It’s not just you—holiday travel IS busy

On average, travel is about a quarter busier than average around Christmas. And last year, an estimated third of Americans traveled during the holidays. That’s 112.5 million people on the roads, rails, runways—maybe even sleigh trails— according to AAA .

I’m not sharing those stats to scare you into staying home! I’m just validating your sneaking suspicion that holiday travel really is busier than normal.

The potential of winter weather delays also makes holiday travel feel busier than normal. (After all, when people aren’t moving when expected, that means roads and airports are more congested.)

Family travel this holiday doesn't have to be hard. Try out my free printable kids' travel activity, travel Bingo! To & Fro Fam

One study researched a year’s worth of data on weather delays and found these to be the most delayed airports in the US:

Worst U.S. Airports for Weather Delays

  • San Francisco International Airport (SFO)
  • Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR)
  • Chicago O’Hare international Airport (ORD)

Now you can’t always choose which airport to fly out of, and you can’t miraculously change the weather in your region. But if you are flying out of one of these hubs, keep in mind winter weather delays are more likely than not. Then make sure you’re prepared—including having things on hand to keep kids entertained, like this Holiday Travel Bingo game!

Holiday Travel Bingo: A great kids' travel activity for the plane or car! Make sure to pack these free printable games for the airplane or your road trip this winter. To & Fro Fam

Holiday Travel Bingo game to keep kids entertained

So much of parenthood is recognizing the difference between what you can control and what you can’t, then moving on from there.

Family travel is the same. You can’t control snow and ice, nor can you control how many other people hit the road when you do. But you can control what you plan to keep your kids entertained during holiday travel.

So why wouldn’t you want these free Holiday Travel Bingo cards? They’re easily portable, so you can bring them along wherever you go. They have a good mix of festive and regular travel squares. They’re usable for air travel as well as road trips. (If you’re driving, make sure to be on the lookout during rest stops and potty breaks!)

Love travel bingo!! We’re staying home for the winter holidays, but I keep wanting to go overseas this time of year and check out the Christmas markets one holiday season. These travel bingo cards would be great for the little ones!!

' src=

Oh my goodness the internet is going crazy over Christmas markets! I’ve never been to one so am sort of confused… maybe something to do next year. 😉 Enjoy your lovely holiday at home, Marlynn!

' src=

What a fun idea for the little ones! We’re embarking on a 10+ hour road trip this Christmas with my boys. I’ve been researching loads of things to keep them busy during the long drive. This one may be tricky to do in the car with wobbly laps, but I’m definitely willing to give it a shot! Thanks for the idea 🙂

Oh Mary, you are brave! I’ll be thinking of you on your road trip. While some of the items on the holiday bingo are more geared toward airports, this is definitely doable on a road trip, too! We use clipboards for laps in the car, and you can also bring the Bingo printable out with you during rest stops and food breaks. Again, good luck and happy holidays!

' src=

How cute are those?! I always loved playing bingo in the car back in the days when we didn’t have iPads, etc. Definitely need to bring this back!

Haha, pre-iPad life is hard to remember! I loved playing games on road trips with my family, too – so glad to help pass along that time-old tradition. 🙂

' src=

I love this festive idea! I’ve decided not to travel this year as a safety precaution – the Canadian government is asking Canadians to stay home so we can keep the pandemic under control, and hoping Canadians do. But! I’m going to share this with my sister so that we can play a game of bingo over video call, with her kids! I instead of travel bingo, virtual bingo. Thanks for sharing!

Erin, I’m obsessed with that idea! I want to figure out a way to play virtual Bingo with my loved ones this holiday, too. Thank you for the inspiration!!! Stay well.

This seems like a really fun and interesting idea, perfect for have a great time with family and friends. Thanks for sharing these ideas!

You’re very welcome! Always glad to meet another family games lover!

The best ways to play bingo while travelling

bingo travel edition

When you play bingo games online, you can choose from a huge variety of different titles, with each taking the classic game and adding a twist to it.

The game of bingo has come a long way since you had to go to a local bingo hall at a certain time of the week to play it. These days, it is possible to enjoy some games even when you travel, with the following some of the best ideas to bear in mind the next time you start packing for a trip.

Use a mobile device or laptop The popularity of online bingo has opened up the game to many new players, and the fact that mobile versions are available has made it even more accessible. You can either download an app from the App Store or Google Play Store or else visit the site on your mobile browser. Either way, the simple, fast gameplay makes bingo ideal for mobile users.

When you play bingo games online , you can choose from a huge variety of different titles, with each taking the classic game and adding a twist to it. For example, popular rooms on the Betfair site include Rainbow Riches, Spirit Twister, and Jackpots Drop. In addition, the site contains a mixture of slots, table games, and other ways of playing.

Play travel bingo A different approach involves creating your own game of bingo. A good example here comes with the travel bingo car game, where you mark off the sights that you pass, such as bridges, flags, and dogs. You can easily print off some travel bingo cards online or create your own, while it also comes in the form of a board game.

Another option is to make your own bingo game based on the classic rules that see you trying to mark off all of the numbers on your card. This is ideal for playing on a long car trip or when you are in a hotel looking for something to do in the evening. Alternatively, you could buy a small bingo set that you can pack and take away with you on your trips.

Look for local bingo options Wherever you go in the world, there is a good chance that bingo is popular there. The US, the UK, and Australia are among the biggest bingo-loving nations, but according to some sources, it is Romania that is second-top after the UK in terms of bingo popularity. The game arguably originated in 16th century Italy , so it is no surprise to see that it is also much-loved here.

You will find some differences as you play this game in various countries, as it was originally used as an educational tool in Germany, while the Japanese love playing online but don’t have a culture of land-based bingo halls. In Russia, you can even join in with a game on TV.

You don’t have to miss out on your bingo action when you leave home. With any of these fun ways of playing the game, you can keep on playing wherever you go. Just a little bit of research before you go should be enough to give you some great ideas for playing as you travel.

Hi, guys!  Today I want to share a few fun tips for traveling with kids and a fun new road trip game, Travel Bingo!!

So many parents are intimidated by the thought of long road trips or traveling great distances with little ones.  I’m not gonna lie, it’s not easy, but it doesn’t have to be awful!  Believe it or not, it can actually be fun!  WIth the right mindset and little extra planning you and your family can have an amazing time traveling to some really cool places!

If you are here only for the Travel Bingo printable, go ahead an scroll to the bottom.  However, if you are here for a few extra traveling tips – keep on reading!!

Travel Bingo Printable

Road Trip Tips

At this point in our family life, we have tackled quite a few road trips.  Our first road trip as a family was when my son was 6 months old.  We drove 12 hours to visit family in Florida.  All I can say about that road trip is…wow!  That trip was a doozy!  However, with each and every road trip things get a little bit easier (plus your kids are always a bit older, which makes things easier too).

One thing I’ve learned through the years is to really be thoughtful about the things you bring.  At first, I would try to think of every possible scenario and pack accordingly.  However, that usually resulted in me packing way too much stuff.  The thing with packing too many things is that it’s difficult to stay organized, which results in an extra messy car.  Also, the kids can be overwhelmed if they have too many options to choose from.  So, b e strategic about what you bring.

I posted a while back about my tips for traveling with kids (which you can check out in full here ), but the gist of it goes like this:

  • When the kids are babies/toddlers, have an adult sit in the back seat with them.
  • Never stop when the kids are sleeping.
  • Alternate driving responsibilities.
  • Pit stop snacks are a great reward.
  • Take time to stretch your legs.
  • Adjust your expectations and slow down.
  • All the electronics!

Road Trip Fun

  • Games : Travel Bingo (obviously), “I’m Going On A Picnic…”, the Alphabet Game,
  • Podcasts : Most adults listen to podcasts these days, but did you know there are also podcasts geared towards kids and families?  Click here and here for a few suggestions!
  • Screentime : A long road trip is not the time or place to limit screen time!! Tablets, video games, movies, etc – I welcome them all in our vehicle!!
  • Books – iSpy books are fun for a long road trip! Also, the time stuck together might be a good time for tackling a read-aloud chapter book !
  • Random Toys :  The littlest things are fun on road trips.  Here are a few ideas to get you started here and here !! Also, this post by Thrifty Frugal Mom has a great list of little things you should definitely check out.  Post-It notes is my favorite suggestion!
  • Snacks – You can never have too many snacks!! Bring all the snacks.  The only advice I have is to think about the ease of eating and the mess involved.

How to Choose the Perfect Travel Bingo Game

Things to consider before buying.

  • Game Variation: Consider the type of travel bingo game you prefer. Some games focus on spotting landmarks, while others feature various modes of transportation or wildlife. Choose a game that aligns with your interests and makes your travel experience even more enjoyable.
  • Age Range: Determine the age range of the players who will be participating in the game. Some travel bingo games are designed specifically for children, while others cater to all age groups. Pick one that ensures everyone can participate and have a blast.
  • Durability: Travel games should be compact, lightweight, and able to withstand wear and tear. Look for games made from durable materials that can endure the rigors of travel. Opt for water-resistant options to protect against unexpected spills or rainy adventures.
  • Portability: Convenience is key when traveling. Choose a travel bingo game that is easy to carry, making it a hassle-free addition to your luggage or backpack. Compact designs and portable storage containers are pluses.
  • Game Size: Consider the number of players you will be traveling with. Ensure your chosen game accommodates an appropriate number of players, allowing everyone to play simultaneously without any difficulties.
  • Ease of Use: Look for games that are simple to understand and require minimal setup. The last thing you want on your travels is a complex game that takes up valuable time and energy.
  • Reusability: Decide whether you prefer a single-use travel bingo game or one that offers reusable cards and markers. Single-use games are convenient for short trips, while reusable ones are more eco-friendly and long-lasting.

Types of Travel Bingo Games

  • Landmark Bingo: Spot famous landmarks or tourist attractions during your travels, perfect for city exploration.
  • Transportation Bingo: Check off different modes of transportation you encounter, such as cars, boats, or airplanes.
  • Wildlife Bingo: Keep an eye out for various wildlife species, such as birds, mammals, or insects, depending on your travel destination.
  • Country/Culture Bingo: Learn about different countries and cultures by finding culturally significant items or symbols.
  • License Plate Bingo: Spot different license plates from various states or countries as you drive along the roads.

City Street Guides by f.d. walker: A Street Photography Guide to Moscow, Russia

moscow-guide-cover

*A series of guides on shooting Street Photography in cities around the world. Find the best spots to shoot, things to capture, street walks, street tips, safety concerns, and more for cities around the world. I have personally researched, explored and shot Street Photography in every city that I create a guide for. So you can be ready to capture the streets as soon as you step outside with your camera!

At over 12 million people, Moscow is the largest city in Russia and second largest in Europe by population ( Istanbul is #1). An urban, cosmopolitan metropolis with more than enough glitz and glam to cater to the elite, but without losing its fair share of Soviet era roughness around the edges. It can be fast paced, brash, busy, and trendy like other big cities, but it has its blend of West meets Russia atmosphere and beauty that provides plenty of unique interest. The Red Square is as famous as it gets, but there’s so much more to this city, including the most beautiful subway system you’ve ever seen. It would take years to capture all of Moscow, but that means you have an endless amount of areas to discover.

bingo travel edition

So here’s a Street Photography guide so you can be ready to capture all that Moscow has to offer before you even arrive!

  • Patriarch’s Pond
  • Old Arbat Street
  • Maroseyka Street
  • Tverskoy Boulevard

Top 5 Street Spots:

1. red square.

The Red Square is the most famous square in not just Russia, but all of Eastern Europe. The name actually doesn’t come from the color of the bricks or communism, but from the name in Russian, Krásnaya, once meaning “beautiful” before its meaning changed to “red.” This large plaza is what you see on the cover of guide books and magazines for Moscow, with St. Basil’s Cathedral being the center piece next to Lenin’s Mausoleum surrounded by the Kremlin Wall. Of course, the Red Square attracts hordes of tourist due to the main attractions, but all that activity around an interesting atmosphere does provide street photo opportunities. It’s also the central square connecting to the city’s major streets, providing a good starting point to explore outward.

bingo travel edition

You’ll also find the popular pedestrian only Nikolskaya Street connecting the Red Square to Lubyanka Square. This line of expensive shops includes plenty of activity, while also leading you to another popular square. Filled with history rivaling any city, the Red Square and surrounding areas are the heart and soul of Russia.

bingo travel edition

2. Patriarch’s Ponds

Patriarch’s Ponds is one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in Moscow. Despite the name being plural, there’s only one large pond, but it’s worth a visit with your camera. It’s a popular spot for locals and expats to come relax or take a stroll around the pond. You get an interesting mix of young and old too, from young love to “babushkas” feeding pigeons. It’s a very peaceful park atmosphere in one of the nicer areas within the city center, while bringing enough activity for street photography.

bingo travel edition

The pond is shallow and in the winter becomes a popular spot for ice-skating too. The area is also well-known for the location in the famous Russian novel, The Master and Margarita.

3. Old Arbat (Stary Arbat)

Old Arbat is the most famous pedestrian street in Moscow, and dating back to the 15th century, also one of its oldest. Originally, it was an area of trade, but soon became the most prestigious residential area in Moscow. During the 18th century, Arbat started attracting the city’s scholars and artists, including Alexander Pushkin. Cafes lined the streets and impressive homes filled the neighborhood. Since then, New Arbat street was created as a highway in the area, while Old Arbat was paved for a 1km pedestrian only walkway.

bingo travel edition

Due to the historic buildings, famous artists that lived here, and the bohemian atmosphere, Old Arbat has become a big attraction for tourists today. Now, there’s a mix of cafes, restaurants, souvenir shops, street performers, street merchants and other attractions for visitors, and some locals, to come enjoy. It can get really busy here and there’s usually something interesting going on so it’s a good street to come walk with your camera for guaranteed life.

4. Gorky Park

One of the most famous places in Moscow is Gorky Park. The official name is Maxim Gorky’s Central Park of Culture & Leisure, which gives you an idea of what goes on here. When built, it was the first of its kind in the Soviet Union. Divided into two parts, it stretches along Moscow River. One end contains fair rides, foods stands, tennis courts, a sports club, a lake for boat rides, and more. This end brings more active life due to its number of attractions, while the other end is more relaxed, where you’ll find gardens, trees, older buildings, and an outdoor amphitheater.

bingo travel edition

Gorky Park attracts mostly locals so it’s a good spot to capture the non-tourist side of Moscow life. Muscovites come here to escape the city and unwind in a picturesque setting. The park remains alive outside of the warmer months too, especially when the lake turns into the city’s largest outdoor skating rink. I’d recommend taking the metro out here to spend at least half a day exploring the massive park’s life with your camera.

5. Maroseyka Street

Maroseyka Street is a popular area not too far from the Red Square. The long, winding street turns into Pokrovka and is lined with restaurants, cafes, bars and places to stay. It’s actually where I like to stay when I’m in Moscow due to its location and solid street photography opportunities itself. You have Kitay-gorod station near and if you keep walking southwest, you’ll get to the Red Square. But if you walk northwest, as it changes to Pokrovka, you can find a long street of activity for photography with its own interesting atmosphere.

bingo travel edition

6. Tverskoy Boulevard

Tverskoy Boulevard is the oldest and longest boulevard in Moscow, beginning at the end of Nikitsky Boulevard, and finishing at Pushkin Square, a spot to come for activity itself. The boulevard is made up of two avenues, with pedestrian walkways in-between. You’ll find grass, shrubbery, trees, benches and more walking it’s almost kilometer length. Many people come here to enjoy some relaxation, walk their dog, or just to use it to walk wherever they’re going. Its center location also provides a nice place to walk with your camera near plenty of other spots you’ll want to check out anyway.

Sample Street Walk:

For a full day of Street Photography, covering some of the best spots, you can follow this sample street walk for Moscow:

  • Start your morning walking around the Red Square (1), while exploring the surrounding area, including Nikolskaya Street
  • Then walk northwest to Patriarch’s Ponds (2) and slowly walk the pond and surrounding area with your camera
  • Next, walk east to the Pushkin Monument and stroll down Tverskoy Boulevard (6)
  • Once Tverskoy Boulevard (6) ends, it will turn into Nikitsky Boulevard. Follow this down until you get to the start of Old Arbat Street (3), across from Arbatskaya station
  • After you’re done walking down Old Arbat Street (3) for more street photography, spend some time checking out Moscow’s beautiful metro stations
  • To finish off the day with more street photography, get off the metro near Red Square (1) again, Maroseyka Street (5) or wherever you’re staying for the night.

3 Things I’ll Remember about Shooting in Moscow:

1. museum metro.

The Moscow metro system was the first underground railway system in the Soviet Union and today includes 203 stations across 340km of routes. The elaborate system has some of the deepest stations in the world too, with escalators that seem to go on forever. None of this is what makes it so special, though. Many of its stations feel like stepping inside a museum, making it without a doubt the most interesting and beautiful metro system I’ve been in.

When built, Stalin wanted to make the metro stations “palaces for the people” with marble, chandeliers, and grand architecture. The best part is the variety of architecture and styles used, making many of the stations a completely different experience visually. You could easily spend a whole day traveling the stations and there are even tours available for people who wish to do just that. My advice, though, would be just to buy a ticket and hop on and off at different stations, while exploring different lines. The museum-like surrounding mixed with the crowds of characters can make for a great photography experience.

Since there are so many stations, here are some of my favorites to check out:

  • Novoslobodskaya
  • Mayakovskaya
  • Elektrozavodskaya
  • Komsomolskaya
  • Ploschad Revolyutsii
  • Dostoyevskaya
  • Prospekt Mira

2. Moscow is Big

It’s no secret that Moscow is a big city, but it can feel even bigger with how spread out much of it is. This is especially true if you compare it to cities outside of Asia. If I compared it to cities in Europe, I’d probably say only Istanbul would warrant more time to really discover the depths of this city. Most only explore around the Red Square and surrounding area, but that is such a small part of the city. Although, that central area does give you plenty to see on its own.

bingo travel edition

Fortunately, I had a good friend living in the city to show me around, but it opened up my eyes even more to how much there is to discover in Moscow. It’s a big city with a variety of atmosphere that can take you from “east” to “west” and trendy to rugged depending on where you go. I’d imagine you’d have to live here a while to really know the city.

3. Cosmopolitan Mix of East meets West

Modern skyscrapers mixed with amazing architecture, a world-class metro system with museum-like beauty, trendy fashion and chic clubs, Moscow is a rich mix of Russian culture and history in a more western cosmopolitan package. There is a push to keep the Russian culture, while also pushing forward with a modern metropolis the whole world will envy. This comes with an impressive skyline, that continues to grow, and endless modernities, but with soviet nostalgia and atmosphere mixed in for good measure.

bingo travel edition

Mixed in with this grand western cosmopolitan atmosphere, is a strong national pride in Russia. This includes their famous leader, Vladimir Putin. Maybe no other place will you see a country’s leader more often. All over, from the pricey tourist shops to the underground walkway stalls, you’ll find goods with Putin’s likeness covering them. From t-shirts to magnets to Matryoshka dolls. There’s a strong national pride that can be seen around the city, which also extends to their leader. Moscow is many things. It’s East meets West, modernizations meets Soviet era, and a whole lot more.

What To Do For a Street Photography Break?:

Eat at a stolovaya.

Stolovayas are Russian cafeterias that became popular in the Soviet days. You grab a tray and walk down the line of freshly prepared local dishes, and select whatever you want from the chefs. They’re usually inexpensive and a much better value than restaurants, while giving you the opportunity to try from a wide selection of everyday Russian food. They’re also very tasty. I always include some borsch on my tray and go from there. The places themselves are all over Moscow and usually come with Soviet-era aesthetics to complete the experience.

bingo travel edition

Street Safety Score: 7

*As always, no place is completely safe! So when I talk about safety, I’m speaking in general comparison to other places. Always take precaution, be smart, observe your surroundings and trust your instincts anywhere you go!

Being the 2nd largest city in Europe with over 12 million people, you’re going to have your dangerous areas, but for the most part, it feels safe walking around. Russia is statistically higher in crime compared to most of Europe, but this generally doesn’t apply to tourists and visitors. Around the Red Square and surrounding city center, you should feel completely safe walking around. Pick pocketing can happen, but no more than other touristic places. I always explore Moscow freely without coming across too much to worry about. It’s a spread out city, though, so of course it matters where you are. Just use basic street smarts, know where you are and Moscow shouldn’t give you a problem.

bingo travel edition

People’s Reaction Score: 7

Moscow is fast paced, big city life, which usually means people aren’t too concerned with you, or your camera. I don’t find people notice or pay much attention to me when I’m out taking photos in Moscow. For the most part, people just go about their day. You shouldn’t get too many looks or concern. But it can depend on the area you are in. The more you stick out, the more you might get noticed with suspicions. I’ve never had any problems in Moscow, or Russia, but just be careful who you’re taking a photo of if you get out of the city center. Other than that, it’s about average for reactions.

bingo travel edition

Street Tips:

Learn the alphabet .

Much of Moscow, including the metro system, doesn’t use english. The Russian alphabet uses letters from the Cyrillic script, which if you aren’t familiar with it and don’t know the sounds, can be hard to decipher the words. This is most important for street names and metro stops when trying to get around. It can save confusion and make it easier getting around if you learn the basic alphabet. At the very least then, you can sound out the words to see which are similar in the english conversion, which can help matching them to maps. When out shooting street photography, getting around is as important as anything. So save yourself some time and frustration by learning the Russian Alphabet.

bingo travel edition

Use the metro

While Saint-Petersburg feels very walkable for a city its size, Moscow can feel very spread out, even for its bigger size. Outside of the Red Square area, you can have plenty of walking before getting anywhere very interesting, so you’ll need to take the metro a lot if you really want to explore the city. Maps are deceiving here too, it will always be further than it looks.

bingo travel edition

Another reason it’s less walkable than Saint-Petersburg is its completely different set-up. Moscow’s streets are mostly contstructed in rings with narrow, winding streets in-between. This is common with medieval city cities that used to be confined by walls, but you usually don’t have it in a city this massive. Saint-Petersburg has a more grid-like pattern that also uses the canals to help you know your way around. When it comes to navigating on foot in Moscow, it can be more difficult, so bring a map and take the metro when needed. It’s why Moscow’s metro carries more passengers per day than the London and Paris subways combined.

Explore other areas if you have time

Moscow is really big. While most people stay around the Red Square within the Boulevard Ring, there’s so much more to the city. I covered some other spots outside of this circle, but if you really want to see the city, you’ll need time. If you do have time, some other areas I’d check out first are Zamoskvarechye, along some of the south and western Moscow.

Inspiration:

For some more inspiration, you can look through the Street Photography of Moscow photographer Artem Zhitenev  and check out 33 of my photos taken in Moscow .

Conclusion:

Moscow’s name brings a certain mystique, but once you’re there it might bring a different atmosphere than you expect. It’s big and sprawling, but beautiful in many ways. It can feel like a European capital on a grand scale, but you can definitely find its Russian side in there.

bingo travel edition

The urban sprawl of Moscow can be intimidating, but give it enough time and you’ll be rewarded with plenty to discover. All with the world’s best metro system to take you around.

I hope this guide can help you start to experience some of what Moscow contains. So grab your camera and capture all that Moscow has to offer for Street Photography!

How to Encourage Your Child to Read More + Free Printable Reading Bingo Game

This post was sponsored by Amazon as part of an Ambassador Activation for Influence Central and all opinions expressed in my post are my own.

It’s National Reading Month and we’ve been celebrating all month! My kids love to read, but sometimes they get stuck in a rut. Whether the problem is that they finished their favorite series and don’t know what to read next or they would just rather have screen time, reading isn’t always their first choice of activity.

To make reading more fun, I like to encourage them to switch it up. That can mean changing genres, reading to a family member, or even finding a new spot to read in. That last one is a favorite of theirs- they have so many favorite reading spots now! They love to read in the car while we travel or even just run errands, they love reading in bed, and their new favorite spot is reading in the tent outside in the fresh air!

One of the easiest ways to switch up reading time- besides changing your location- is changing books often. Books can be really expensive though- and they take up a lot of space- so I love our Fire 8 HD Kids Edition Tablet for reading time. With the included year of Amazon FreeTime Unlimited, we have access to over 20,000 books, videos, Audible books, educational apps, and games that are age-appropriate and hand-curated by the Amazon FreeTime team. That means that either kid can find a book out of the thousands available to them. Even Zac, who is still a pre-reader, can “read” to himself by using Audible books if everyone else is unavailable.

Beyond Amazon FreeTime, there are so many reasons to get a Fire Kids Edition Tablet. They can stand up to whatever your kids throw at them since they come in a kid-proof case- and in the off chance that they don’t, Amazon will replace it anytime for the first two years- no questions asked.

I love that I can set parental controls either on the Fire Kids Edition Tablet or through the Parent Dashboard that’s available remotely. You can even use the Parent Dashboard to see how long your child has been reading each day, and how many times they’ve read each book- you can quickly see what books are becoming fast favorites!

I love using the Parent Dashboard to check and see what my kids have been reading so we can discuss them {since their settings are configured to only let them read appropriate books, I don’t always look at each book before they read it}. Many books have Discussion Cards that gives parents the opportunity to have a “family book club” of sorts, with summaries and sample questions based on the books.

If you’re interested in Amazon FreeTime Unlimited but don’t have a Fire Kids Edition Tablet, you can download the app on iOS and Android. Once you sign up, that subscription can be used on any compatible device including Fire tablets, Fire Kids Edition tablets, compatible Android and iOS phones and tablets, and even compatible Echo devices, including Echo Dot for Kids. {Or, enter to win your own Fire Kids Edition Tablet below!}

If your kids need a little extra push to read like mine sometimes do, download this free printable Reading Bingo game ! Print out a few copies to keep on hand, or laminate one and use dry erase markers with it so you can play it over and over.

To celebrate National Reading Month, Amazon is partnering with blogs like mine to give away TEN Amazon Fire Kids Edition Tablets! Enter below for your chance to win one! Good luck!

I-C will randomly select winners from all program entries and Amazon will facilitate fulfillment of the winning prizes of 10 Winners.

Sports | baseball fan promotions: 6 fun minor-league events for the 2024 season, from ross & rachel night to wet nose wednesdays, this is how you celebrate baseball, minor-league style.

Young Cameron Alderman of San Jose eats a churro, the signature treat at Excite Ballpark. Hipolito Cerda, of Castroville, has been making fresh churros for baseball fans at the ballpark for about three decades, and several events this season will honor him and churros.. (Jose Carlos Fajardo/Bay Area News Group archves)

When it comes to entertaining fans, baseball’s minor leagues have a history of stepping up to the plate. Most teams host base-running events for kids, heritage game days and bobblehead giveaways — besides scheduling several fireworks nights a season. And then there are the signature events, with on and off the field antics. Here’s a roundup of fun ones:

San Jose Giants: Dia de Los Churros

Churros are so popular with fans at the San Jose Giants’ Excite Ballpark that the team honors the sweet legacy on not one but five game days. It’s all in tribute to Hipolito Cerda, the man who has been making them fresh for decades at his Olimpos Churros stand just off the third-base line. On Dia de los Churros, the players wear jerseys and hats featuring cartoon churro characters. Giveaways this season include churro ornaments on Christmas in July Night on July 24, Hawaiian shirts at the Aug. 17 Margaritaville Night and wizard scarves at Harry Potter Night on Aug. 30. Rancho Cucamonga Quakes: ‘Friends’ TV Show Night

The Quakes’ LoanMart Field invites fans of the hilarious TV sitcom characters Chandler, Phoebe, Ross, Monica, Joey and Rachel to the ballpark on June 21 for photo opportunities, specialty jerseys — and a game against the Inland Empire 66ers. The first 1,500 people through the gate will receive a “Friends” mug. More fun: A number of Bark in the Ballpark events are scheduled for this season. The pet-friendly seats are located on the first-base side of the stadium. Details: www.milb.com/rancho-cucamonga

Stockton Ports: Asparagus Night

When you’re the Asparagus Capital of the World, you can’t ignore those springtime stalks. The A’s single-A affiliate celebrates Stockton’s biggest crop with Asparagus Night festivities that in the past have included Ports players in dark-green jerseys emblazoned with asparagus, asparagus trivia on the Banner Island Ballpark scoreboard, asparagus mascot races and, of course, deep-fried asparagus, bacon-wrapped asparagus and more. Mark April 20, on your calendar for this year’s event. Other great promotions include Luau Night on May 3, with a Hawaiian shirt giveaway, and a Martial Arts Night on May 31, when fans will receive free Karate Splash bobbleheads. Details: www.milb.com/stockton

Modesto Nuts: Pups & Pints

Sacramento river cats: princess & pirate night.

Storytelling rules in West Sacramento at Sutter Health Park, home of the Giants’ Triple-A affiliate. Look for princesses and pirates to fill the stands at one game this season and mini-Harry Potters at another game (dates, activities to be announced). Giveaway nights for the first 2,500 fans through the gate will include a 25th River Cats anniversary replica jersey on June 21 and a Dinger coffee mug on July 19. Dinger, of course, is the team’s personable mascot. Speaking of cuddly, Wet Nose Wednesday is a weekly invitation to watch the game with your dog on Home Run Hill. Details: www.milb.com/sacramento

Fresno Grizzlies: Meet Bluey & Bingo Night

This jam-packed lineup may have you vacationing in Fresno so you can catch these events at Chukchansi Park, home to this Single A-affiliate of the Colorado Rockies. We predict an early-season sellout April 13 for Meet Bluey & Bingo Night featuring the adorable Aussie characters who appeal to both kids and parents. May 25 has been named Fresno Parks & Rec Night, and actor-comedian Jim O’Heir (who played Jerry Gergich on TV’s “Parks and Recreation”) will be in attendance. The Grizzlies will celebrate Latino and lowrider culture with the three-day Fiesta Oso with the Lowriders de Fresno, July 19-21. Among the many events honoring community heroes will be the April 12 one titled My Job Depends on Ag, with a Fresno tribute jersey giveaway. Details: www.milb.com/fresno
