Good morning

Good evening

"What is there to not love about England. Real life castles, Princes and Princesses, stunning scenery, and historic streets lined with lively pubs everywhere you go!”

Aryan, Travel Director

Admire the British capital from the London Eye

Watch London unfurl from the iconic 135-metre height of the London Eye. The unmatched views extend in every direction, reaching Buckingham Palace, the river Thames and the famed clock tower of the Palace of Westminster. All London’s highlights in one peaceful, 30-minute rotation.

Take in the views of Britain's Lake District

Delve into Britain’s natural wonders and take in the panorama of rolling hills, rocky mountains and glittering waters of the Lake District. Abounding in outdoor opportunities from cruises to hilltop walks, you'll find serenity in this national park resting between Leeds and Glasgow.

Visit the Roman baths in Bath

Turn back the clock 2,000 years at the remarkably preserved remains of the Roman Baths. Still flowing with steaming, geothermally heated water, the ancient stone pavements reveal the culture behind the simple daily task of washing. Let time stand still staring at a spring filled with 12,000 Roman coins.

Enjoy the guided tour of Liverpool

Sink into the nostalgia of the Beatles, cruise along the Mersey River and sample real ale at the Albert Docks. A visit to Liverpool is an invitation to uncover the many layers of British culture; the UK's fifth largest city means more than the passion of its football club.

See the Stonehenge's stone monoliths

Southwest England’s soil is rich with mystery. Stand in the shadows of Stonehenge’s stone monoliths and let your imagination be sparked by the secrets of this 5,000-year history. Weighing up to 30 tonnes each, the weight of history will leave its mark on you.

Our top 5 things to do in England

Mysterious stone monoliths and preserved ancient baths prove there is so much more to see beyond the limits of London city. Let Trafalgar turn the pages of the history book that is England.

The British Museum

The British Museum is a ticket to relics that reveal some two million years of human history. Feel small standing beneath the colossal presence of Rameses II and contrast the myth and reality of Troy with the graphic world of Manga. This London highlight will take you on a journey of time travel.

Natural History Museum

The Natural History Museum takes you on an unfathomable discovery of the formation of the solar system and its path to the present. Trace the origin of our species under the shade of a T. rex and glimpse rare meteorites straight from the surface of Mars. If this doesn’t shake you, the earthquake simulator most certainly will.

Victoria and Albert

The Victoria and Albert Museum is an encounter with the very best of human creativity in almost every medium. Here you will design your own bioplastic bag, step behind the creative lens of Christian Dior and take a literal walk in history’s shoes admiring a 2,000 strong collection spanning 3,000 years.

Best museums in England

A cultural epicentre of the planet steeped in royal heritage, the museums of England sparkle like the Crown Jewels. Let Trafalgar guide you through the very best the region has to offer.

Fish & Chips

It’s hard to separate the partnership of fish 'n' chips. Try this traditional meal both from a gourmet restaurant and a local 'chippie' wrapped in newspaper. Always with lashings of salt and vinegar on top.

Sunday Roast

Embrace the traditional English Sunday lunch with roast meats, a side of vegetables and an indulgent topping of gravy. The joy of this simple culinary experience is best served in a traditional English pub complete with football on the screen and a few stouts.

Full English breakfast

The full English breakfast is a requisite of a trip to England. A hearty plate piled with fried bacon, grilled tomatoes, buttered toast, mushrooms, eggs, beans, and black puddingis hard to resist.

Best food in England

Food is at the heart of every journey when you travel to England. This is a country of warm and hearty meals, our trips will show you the very best of it.

What to pack for England

People packing for a tour

With a high chance of experiencing four seasons in one day, an umbrella is a must when visiting England, both for rainy days and occasions when the sun beams down.

Digital maps

It's always good to have a backup of digital maps on standby when you're out exploring in your own time. Download them prior to your trip so you can reach them even when your phone is offline.

Travel adaptor

Though many hotels will have adaptors available for use, being prepared with your own will ensure you're always charged and ready to go.

A good book

With a seemingly infinite list of parks found in England, don't forget to pack a novel and immerse yourself in a good book should the occasion arise.

With days full of adventure and numerous souvenirs tempting your strolls, a day pack will ensure your hands always remain free. Split the weight across your back with a double strap bag for extra comfort.

Learn more about England

Local culture.

The culture of England might appear to be much the same as Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland. But ask folk from each of these countries and they’ll tell you a different story. Sure, there are many similarities, but England has a unique culture that differs from its neighbours.

For a start, English culture is extremely diverse with many sub-cultures, dialects, accents and traditions. In fact, there are some pretty stark differences between the north and the south. Northerners are known for their warmth and friendliness, things generally tend to be more expensive in the south, and gravy (which is welcomed on everything in the north) isn't a massive thing down south. That being said, some common cultural ground people share across England include good manners, small talk about the weather and humour that verges on the sarcastic side.

Food and drink

England (and the UK in general) is very multicultural and you’ll find every cuisine from Indian to Lebanese to American. London in particular is a thriving hotspot for foodies with pop-up food villages, quirky converted eateries and over 60 Michelin-stared restaurants. The term “meat and three veg” was coined in England, and while English cuisine doesn’t have a global reputation like French or Italian, the food is simple, hearty and comforting. If you’re looking to try some classic English food, here are some dishes to try.

Fish and chips

A flaky piece of battered fish served on a mound of salty chips, lashings of vinegar and a side of mushy peas. This is as English as it gets. Up north they smother their chips in thick brown gravy or curry sauce. Other popular condiments include tartare sauce and pickled onions or eggs. You’ll find the best fish and chips by the coast in places like Blackpool, Devon or Cornwall.

Bangers and mash

A ‘banger’ is a sausage in the UK. Why? Well, after WWI when food was still rationed, sausages were plumped up with so much fat that they exploded when cooked. ‘Mash’ refers to creamy mashed potato traditionally made with butter and milk. Et voila, you have bangers and mash - one of Britain’s most beloved dinners. Served with peas and lashings of onion gravy, it’s a hearty and filling dish that goes down particularly well on a cold winter’s night.

Sunday roast

Ask an English person what they think is the most loved national dish, and they’ll probably say a Sunday roast. This age-old tradition isn’t just a lunch eaten on Sunday afternoons, but an opportunity for the whole family or group of friends to spend quality time and enjoy a nice meal together. It’s essentially a centrepiece of roasted meat (usually chicken, beef, pork or lamb) served with crispy roast potatoes, seasonal roasted vegetables and lashings of gravy. It might also be served with a Yorkshire pudding depending on where you are. It's usually served with mint sauce (for lamb), horseradish sauce (for beef), or bread sauce and redcurrant jelly (for chicken). You can get a roast dinner in most pubs every Sunday.

Full English breakfast

Also known as a fry up, this hearty breakfast consists of eggs (usually fried but you can also get scrambled or poached), bacon, sausage, baked beans, grilled tomato, mushrooms and hot buttered toast. It’s typically served with a mug of tea or coffee. The carb and fat-rich foods also make it a go-to hangover cure for many Brits, and cafes usually serve it as an all-day dish. You’ll find slightly different versions of a fry up in Cornwall, Scotland, Wales and Ireland.

Festivals and events

Glastonbury Music Festival

Glastonbury is the crown jewel of the British music festival calendar. This five-day festival draws in about 200,000 people and is the size of 500 football pitches. You’ll find everything from world-class music acts, rising stars, comedy, dance, wellness villages, permaculture workshops, cabaret, secret bars, circus and so much more. It’s an eclectic, vibrant, random and truly wonderful festival – even when it’s pouring with rain.

Notting Hill Carnival

The Notting Hill Carnival is a vibrant Caribbean festival that takes place every August on the streets of Notting Hill in Kensington, London. The streets come alive with sound systems, DJs, live steel bands, costumed dancers, Caribbean flavours and smells, and spirited party goers. Thousands of people join the streets to enjoy the carnival vibes and party late into the night. Stemming from the Trinidad Carnival, Notting Hill Carnival began in 1966 and has remained a key part of London’s festival calendar.

World of Music, Arts and Dance (WOMAD)

WOMAD is a gathering of 40,000 people at a beautiful site in Charlton Park to celebrate music, art, dance and culture from around the world. Spend your days exploring different music stages and grooving in the sunshine (or rain!), take part in one of the 80+ workshops, travel around the globe vicariously through your tastebuds at the food village, or perch yourself on the ground with a cold drink to simply take it all in.

Diwali in Leicester

Diwali – the Indian festival of lights that is celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs and Jains – in Leicester is one of the world’s biggest Diwali celebrations outside of India. People travel from all over the UK and beyond to see the “Golden Mile” – illuminated temples and firework displays that symbolize the triumph of light over darkness, evil over light and knowledge over ignorance. The cultural program in Leicester includes music, dance, fire performers, religious ceremonies, delicious street food and funfair rides.

Chelsea Flower Show

Stop off in London for breathtaking floral displays of the  RHS Chelsea Flower Show.  Established in 1912, the Chelsea Flower Show is an exhibition of show gardens and floral displays set within the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea. The Chelsea Flower Show is held in May and draws garden-lovers from all over the world.

When is the best time to visit England?

The UK experiences the best weather from June to August, though there’s never any guarantee that summer is full of sunshine and warmth. The crowds might be bigger, but this is because the country wakes up from a dark winter slumber and celebrates – a lot. Outdoor dining is in full swing, pubs and bars are pumping and festivals flood the events calendar. Spring and autumn can be cool and wet but with some sunny days, and the days are still long enough to enjoy the country’s diverse and picturesque scenery. Winter (December to February) brings short days, grey skies and sometimes snow, though this is more often in England’s northern counties or places are higher elevations. Top advice: always have a rain jacket and a brolly at the bottom of your bag.

Our England Tours

With its wide cultural influence, England may feel familiar on a first visit, even if never visited before. However, this beloved country packs enormous variety into its relatively small land area. While it takes time to discover England’s wealth of unexpected delights, it’s not unusual to leave yearning to return again and again for another United Kingdom vacation.

Certainly, there’s the ‘Royal’ aspect, manifests physically through the palaces and other residences of the royal family. This is one of England’s biggest attractions for visitors, while Idyllic villages, wild moorland, castles, country houses, cathedral spires, the ubiquitous inn or pub, crashing waves against the country’s shoreline, and the ‘Englishness’ of the people (a vast subject on its own), all round out the picture of this charismatic destination.

A UK vacation encompasses all these things, yet England stands apart, from its beautiful northern regions to its well-heeled capital, London . Each diverse part of the country has left its mark on England’s culture , cuisine , and citizens.

England Vacation and Trip Highlights

England can be divided roughly into three sections, each with deep and distinct historical and linguistic roots. These can be further divided into regions, which in turn consist of counties most of which also have long histories.

Best places to visit in England

London, the capital city of both England and the United Kingdom, is a global capital of finance, fashion, entertainment and culture. You will find the rest of England to be very different, and to be honest if you only visit London you haven’t ‘seen England.’ However, because distances are short and the rail system top-notch, you can easily take day excursions to a number of iconic places such as Windsor, Oxford and Cambridge, Brighton, Stratford upon Avon, and many others to enhance your UK vacation package.

In London, the list of attractions simply doesn’t end. Tour Buckingham Palace (in the summer, while the Royal Family is away), the Tower of London, and the many beautiful and serene parks, all centrally located. Take a cruise on the iconic River Thames, see concerts and performances and spend a night at the theatre or one of the countless vibrant clubs. Explore amazing museums and art galleries. dine at your choice of restaurant, or have a drink at a pub dating back hundreds of years. The choice is truly endless

North of London lies the Midlands. A name that perhaps does not conjure up the charm of other regions in England. But almost every metropolitan area has something historical or cultural to offer on a United Kingdom vacation. An example of this is Georgian Stamford, of which the author, George Elliot waxed lyrically.

The North has its own distinct character, be it the people of the countryside. Industrial cities thrive side by side with the wildest and most evocative countryside imaginable. Three areas that epitomize this are the Lake District with its pastoral charm and homage to the poet, Wordsworth, the Yorkshire Dales, home of the Bronte sisters, and the North Yorkshire Moors, home of the renowned James Herriot stories.

Other significant places to add to your England vacation list are Devon and Cornwall with their rustic charm and beautiful coastlines (don’t miss out on the untamed National Parks of Dartmoor and Exmoor). The Cotswolds, possibly representing the essence of the English countryside, the many cathedral cities of Canterbury, York, Salisbury, Lincoln, Gloucester, Ely, Winchester etc., the Spa towns such as Bath and Harrogate, and the multitude of beach resorts which dot the lengthy, attractive coastline.

England Travel Information

England weather.

England has often been stereotyped as being cold and grey but this is not entirely accurate. Temperatures rarely get very cold or very hot, and while the country certainly gets rain, it is really not as wet as rumour has it. London alone has lower annual rainfall than Paris , New York, or Sydney , and it's not uncommon for parts of the country to go without rain for weeks. Winter and Fall are usually the wettest seasons when the weather is often very changeable and at times quite windy. However, be prepared for unsettled weather at any time of the year and make sure to check the weather forecast if you plan to spend much of your England vacation outdoors.

English Food

Traditional English dishes still exist such as bread and cheese (ploughman’s lunch), roasts, game pies, oxtail soup and both fresh and seawater fish. Other meals including fish and chips, which were once urban street food eaten from a newspaper with salt and malt vinegar, and pies and sausages with mashed potatoes, onions, and gravy, are now matched in popularity by curries from the Indian subcontinent, and stir-fries based on Chinese and Thai cuisines. French cuisine and Italian cuisine are also now widely adopted.

Whatever your interests, England is ready to indulge them. From energetic pastimes such as hiking or walking to cultural pursuits such as the theatre, museums, art galleries and historical sites, England has it all while on a UK vacation.

What travelers say about their trips to England

Travel tips for england tours.

Despite being farther north than much of North America, England has a temperate climate—which means tours of England are enjoyable most any time of year. But when is the best time to visit England? Spring and fall offer pleasant weather and fewer crowds at the most popular sites, making the off-season a perfect time to visit England. Winter, too, offers plenty of charm—despite the cold temps—with Christmas markets happening in London and around the country.

No matter what time of year you plan your trip to England, expect some rain—but don’t let it keep you from enjoying this beautiful destination! Just have your Wellies with you (that’s British for “rainboots”).

There are plenty of places to see in England, and because the country is relatively small it’s easy to do in one trip. On our escorted tours of England, you can choose to live like a local for a week on a London City Stay or see it all on a Grand Tour of Great Britain —or something in-between.

Here are just a few of the destinations you can explore on our tours of England:

  • Westminster Abbey in London
  • Liverpool, the home of the Beatles
  • The historic city of York
  • Bath, a UNESCO-listed city

But this is just the start! Our tours go to many of the best places to visit in England. One of our expert Tour Consultants can help you choose the escorted tour of England that’s perfect for you.

Traditional British cuisine has ancient roots—meat and game pies, vegetable stews, and hearty breads were on tables all the way back to the Middle Ages! Influences from former British colonies can also be found in local dishes; authentic Indian, African, and Asian food is especially popular in cities like London. But, no matter where you visit in England, you’ll find a local pub where you can stop for a pint and enjoy an iconic English dish like fish and chips.

On all of our England tour packages, you’ll enjoy meals that are authentic to the region and have free time to try new dishes on your own, too! Ask your Tour Director for recommendations—they’re experts who can guide you to the best of England’s culinary scene.

When packing for any of our tours of England, remember to be prepared for many different types of weather! At any time of year, expect occasional rain showers. Boots, an umbrella, and a rain jacket are good to have handy in every season. Layers are also always a good idea, as evenings in England tend to be cooler—even in summer—and the Brits tend to open a window rather than turn on the A/C, too.

Once you’ve reserved one of our England vacation packages, you’ll receive a detailed packing list for your specific trip. Plus, you can download the Go Ahead Tour Companion app so you’ll have everything you need to prepare right in your pocket.

Britain and Ireland Delight (Summer, 8 Days) Tour

Britain and Ireland Delight (Summer, 8 Days)

An amazing trip. Sarah Rose was the best tour guide we have ever had. Her knowledge of the history of the UK and Ireland was outstanding. We were looked after from the time we met before starting the trip until after we left then bus at the end. The extra activities were a highlight of the trip and Sarah was the bubbly personality that brought the 40 holiday makers together. A special mention to our bus driver Tomek who was on hand all hours to make sure we were at our destinations on time. Always friendly and willing to help if needed. I would highly recommend the trip and the staff that made this an unforgettable expe4ience. Regards John & Mary

Grand Tour of Britain & Ireland Tour

Grand Tour of Britain & Ireland

A little disappointed in the Glasgow hotel and the Holiday Inn in York, both were not up to standard with cleanliness issues and a bed which sagged into the middle at York. I also think the tour started an hour too early and finished an hour too early each day.

The Best of Britain & Ireland Tour

The Best of Britain & Ireland

The tour was as advertised “a taste of the UK”,we saw some wonderful sites, beautiful towns/cities & magnificent people. Our tour guide (Peter) gave us interesting facts & antidotes for the places we went to.The accomodation was average but it did the job required (sadly none had separate laundry facilities to catch up with washing).Sometimes you felt rushed other times why are we here for 4 hours(to much shopping time).Overall we had a great time with our fellow passengers & Cosmos looked after us with respect & if given a chance to travel again by coach Cosmos tours will be on our check list. Regards Peter & Anne

What people love about UK And Great Britain Tours

Very nice itinerary ... jam packed days and evenings. I chose not to do any of the extra evening excursions that were offered so I was able to use the time to explore every overnight stop on my own. The tour guide was amazing... so full of knowledge about all the countries/areas we visited.
I really enjoyed the trip

Best Canada and New England cruise excursions

Donna Heiderstadt

The cruise season in Canada and New England may be brief — most ships visit between July and October — yet tour opportunities for everything from historical immersion to outdoor adventure abound. The best Canada and New England cruise excursions are as varied as the states and provinces you'll visit.

Options include Revolutionary War landmarks in Boston, whale watches in New Brunswick's Bay of Fundy, "Anne of Green Gables" lore on Prince Edward Island and atmospheric old towns in French-speaking Quebec. And, of course, you'll find plenty of scenic drives, walks and boat trips to admire the gorgeous fall foliage from late September to late October.

Whether you prefer vibrant cities, charming coastal hamlets or unspoiled natural landscapes, New England and Canada cruises offer access to all three. Newport, Rhode Island

Grand Mansions and Newport highlights tour

The excesses of the Gilded Age live on in Newport's magnificent landmark mansions, which were "summer cottages" built by the Astors, Vanderbilts, Morgans and other titans of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Book a tour to step inside one of these impressive homes.

Most tours include a panoramic bus ride through the scenic Ocean Drive historic district, where sights include the Tennis Hall of Fame and Trinity Church. Next, along Bellevue Avenue, you'll admire elegant mansions and the Gothic-style St. Mary's Church, where John and Jacqueline Kennedy married in 1953.

You'll finish your tour with a visit to a historic mansion. Examples include The Elms, modeled after an 18th-century French chateau and built in 1901, and Rosecliff, designed by architect Stanford White and completed in 1902.

Important to know: Most mansion excursions last two and a half hours and combine easy sightseeing by bus with a walking tour of a mansion. Many mansion tours are self-guided and require you to download the Newport Mansions app to your smartphone and listen to the audio tour with earbuds.

Newport Cliff Walk and The Breakers

If you prefer to sightsee by foot and love oceanfront vistas, a Newport Cliff Walk and The Breakers excursion will put you center stage. You can admire Narragansett Bay on one side and the famed mansions of Newport on the other.

While the entire Cliff Walk spans 3.5 miles along the scenic coastline, this guided excursion typically covers just 1.25 miles as you pass the backyards of some of Bellevue Avenue's most celebrated mansions. The walk ends with a tour of The Breakers, an Italian Renaissance palazzo built in 1895 by Cornelius Vanderbilt II. It features 70 rooms, 27 fireplaces and a central Great Hall with a 50-foot ceiling.

Important to know: Most Cliff Walk and The Breakers excursions last three hours. The Cliff Walk is flat and paved in this section, but comfortable footwear is a must since this tour involves more than two hours of walking and standing.

Boston, Massachusetts

england tour from canada

Freedom Trail walking tour

Do you love American history? Will you be cruising with school-age kids? A port call in Boston offers a chance to learn about major historic events, such as when the colonies battled for independence from England almost 250 years ago.

A guided walking tour along the city's famed Freedom Trail lets you discover 16 historical sites. These include Boston Common, the Massachusetts State House, the Old South Meeting House (where a gathering sparked the Boston Tea Party in 1773) and the Old North Church. The latter is where Paul Revere placed two lanterns to signal that the British were approaching by sea during his midnight ride on April 18, 1775.

Important to know: Freedom Trail walking tours generally last three and a half hours and cover a distance of 2 to 2.5 miles at a moderate pace. The walk generally ends near Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market, so you might have time to explore on your own before returning to your ship.

Fenway Park and Boston highlights tour

Love 'em or hate 'em, the Boston Red Sox play in one of baseball's most celebrated stadiums: Fenway Park. Book this popular New England cruise excursion, and you'll find yourself among some of the sport's most dedicated fans. All will be eager to step inside the oldest stadium in the major leagues, built in 1912.

You'll see the dugouts, the press box, the manually operated scoreboard, Pesky's Pole in right field and the 37-foot-tall left-field wall known as the Green Monster. On your way to and from Fenway, you'll also take in some of Boston's top historic sites from inside your bus with guided commentary.

Important to know: Family-friendly Fenway Park and Boston highlights tours are generally three and a half hours and involve some walking within the stadium. Tours do not include an actual game, and some areas may be off limits due to activity within the stadium.

Portland, Maine

Portland Highlights and Lighthouse tour

Aside from its lobster, Maine is perhaps best known for the lighthouses that dot its rugged coastline. This sightseeing tour showcases a picturesque landmark that has long protected sailors from meeting a tragic end, along with several popular Portland neighborhoods.

After enjoying a bus tour through downtown Portland — home to Victorian houses and a modern Arts District — you'll drive along the scenic coast to Portland Head Light, Maine's oldest lighthouse. Sitting in the onetime military outpost of Fort Williams, the Instagram-worthy landmark dates to 1791 and features beautiful grounds; there's also a museum in the lighthouse keeper's quarters.

Important to know: These scenic tours are generally two hours, and much of that time is spent on the bus. The museum entrance fee ($2) is not always included in the tour cost.

Kennebunkport

Price: $$-$$$

Exploring Kennebunkport is a popular daytrip from Portland. Cruise lines offer several shore excursions to this charming seaside village, perhaps best known as the summer residence of former President George H.W. Bush and first lady Barbara Bush.

Shorter excursions focus on the town's 18th- and 19th-century sea captains' mansions and offer free time to explore independently. They may also include a scenic sailing (the best way to have a look at the Bush compound at Walker's Point).

Longer tours combine bus sightseeing with a scenic cruise, a clam chowder and lobster roll lunch, and free time to browse Kennebunkport's shops and galleries.

Important to know: Kennebunkport is approximately a 45-minute drive from Portland, and excursions range from three to seven hours. If you plan to shop, ask the shore excursion desk how much free time will be allotted.

Bar Harbor, Maine

england tour from canada

Acadia National Park

Your cruise line is likely to offer a variety of excursions that explore Acadia National Park, the coastal preserve known for its 3,478 miles of shoreline and the 360-degree panoramic views from atop 1,530-foot Cadillac Mountain.

The easiest excursions involve sightseeing from a bus (or an executive minicoach on a small-group tour) and generally cover the 27-mile Loop Road and/or coastal highlights. The most strenuous involve hikes or bike rides. Another option is an excursion that combines a Loop Tour in Acadia with an authentic lobster bake lunch.

Important to know: Acadia National Park tours range from two to four hours and the visibility from atop Cadillac Mountain depends on weather conditions. Additionally, the park regulates the number of buses allowed to stop atop the mountain, so in September and October (foliage season) tour buses are not always allowed there.

Kayaking in Frenchman Bay

Active, outdoors-loving cruisers can opt to paddle the waters surrounding Mount Desert Island, considered one of the top sea kayaking spots on the East Coast.

Local outfitters provide stable tandem (two-person) kayaks; you'll be instructed on how to perfect a fluid stroke and glide past the scenic coastline off of Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. Keep your eyes open for local residents, such as harbor seals, porpoises and bald eagles.

Important to know: Kayaking tours typically last two and a half to three hours and are considered a strenuous excursion. Anyone in good physical condition (upper body strength is key) can participate, and beginners are welcome. You'll hear instructions from a professional guide and get a dry bag.

Saint John, New Brunswick

england tour from canada

Whale watching by Zodiac on the Bay of Fundy

From June to October, the Bay of Fundy is home to hundreds of finback and minke whales; humpbacks arrive in late summer. So, a port call here offers an opportunity to view these magnificent creatures as they feed and play.

The Zodiacs (some tours also use larger vessels or catamarans) depart from Saint Andrews, about 75 minutes from Saint John. You have a 90% or greater chance of spotting whales as you zip around the bay for two hours. You might also see seals, porpoises and eagles. Most tours allow you free time to explore the picturesque seaside town of Saint Andrews, and some include a snack or lunch — typically seafood chowder.

Important to know: Whale watching by Zodiac tours are generally six or seven hours long, and the Zodiacs do have fixed chairs (some with shock absorption). This makes them suitable for most adults without major back or mobility issues and older children (generally ages 9 and above).

Reversing Falls, St Martins sea caves and the Bay of Fundy

Fallsview Park's dynamic reversing rapids are a must-see when visiting Saint John. Your cruise line will likely offer a variety of Bay of Fundy tours, but look for one that combines a visit to the park with a drive to the small town of Saint Martins.

The Reversing Rapids is what happens when the Saint John River meets the strong and dramatic tides of the Bay of Fundy. The exchange of water flowing into the bay at low tide and back from the bay at high tide creates a series of rapids and whirlpools.

The highlight in Saint Martins is the Sea Caves, dramatic formations carved into the red-hued cliffs by the tides. You'll walk along the pebble-strewn beach — and even into the cave entrances if your visit is at low tide — and afterward enjoy a hearty bowl of seafood chowder. Saint Martins is also home to several covered bridges and gift shops. Before returning to your ship, you'll visit the circa-1876 Old City Market in Saint John.

Important to know: Saint Martins is about 70 minutes from Saint John and tours generally last five to six hours. The sights you'll see are dependent on the daily tide schedules and the weather (fog is not uncommon). While this is a moderate activity, some walking is involved, especially to reach the sea caves from the rocky beach.

Halifax, Nova Scotia

england tour from canada

Peggy's Cove

Peggy's Cove, a coastal village dating back to 1811, has inspired numerous painters and photographers. It's also a popular Canadian cruise excursion destination.

Your ship will likely offer several different excursions here, from a scenic coastal drive and tour to a longer option that allows time to savor a delicious lobster lunch and explore the town's shops and galleries on your own. A highlight is the circa-1914 lighthouse set atop an impressive rocky outcropping. Back in Halifax, some tours also do a drive-by of Province House, where the Nova Scotia House of Assembly has gathered every year since 1819.

Important to know: Excursions to Peggy's Cove range from three to seven hours. The drive from Halifax is about an hour each way, which means shorter tours offer very little time to actually explore the town.

Halifax Hop-On, Hop-Off Bus tour

Prefer to sightsee at your own pace? If so, book a tour that lets you utilize Halifax's hop-on, hop-off vintage double-decker buses to explore the sights on its 90-minute loop.

The bus will take you to the Public Gardens, the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, the fashionable North End shopping district and the Fairview Lawn Cemetery, where 121 passengers who perished on the Titanic in April 1912 are laid to rest. Some cruise lines also add extras, such as fast-pass access to the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic — home to some Titanic memorabilia — and Citadel Hill National Historic Site — a star-shaped fortress constructed in 1856.

Important to know: Buses run every 30 minutes, so plan your stays at the various sights carefully to avoid wasting precious port time.

Sydney, Nova Scotia

england tour from canada

Cape Breton Island

Nova Scotia's rich Scottish-Gaelic history and culture come to life during a visit to Cape Breton Island. The area is in eastern Nova Scotia and is encircled by a roadway called the Cabot Trail.

Tours from Sydney, the island's largest city, vary by cruise line. Still, highlights include the Bras d'Or Lakes region, which is home to Highland Village — a cultural center and living history museum dedicated to early Gaelic settlement in Nova Scotia. You'll also visit Baddeck village, the birthplace of Alexander Graham Bell, and can visit a museum that showcases his life and inventions.

Explore Baddeck's shops and cafes on foot; then make a final stop at Seal Island for a photo-op atop Kelly's Mountain overlooking Saint Ann's Bay.

Important to know: Canada cruise excursions to Cape Breton last between four and seven hours, with a one-hour drive each way from and to the port in Sydney. A fair amount of walking is required, especially in Highland Village. Longer tours typically include lunch.

Fortress of Louisbourg

History buffs with a penchant for live reenactments can enjoy a guided excursion to the Fortress of Louisbourg, North America's largest reconstructed 18th-century French fortified town.

The original fortress was built from 1720 to 1740 and once ranked as France's most important military and trade center on the continent. The entire 12-acre complex, now a Canadian National Historic Site, is home to more than 50 period buildings. A wide range of characters dressed in mid-18th-century garb offer historical context as they reenact everyday life from almost 300 years ago.

Important to know: The Fortress of Louisbourg is about 45 minutes away from Sydney. Excursions less than four hours may not offer enough time (just 30 to 45 minutes) to explore the complex independently after the guided tour ends. This excursion involves a significant amount of walking.

Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island

england tour from canada

Anne of Green Gables

There are many reasons to visit Prince Edward Island, including its beach-fringed national parks and fresh-from-the-sea cuisine. But perhaps the biggest tourist draw, especially for literary enthusiasts, is Anne of Green Gables — the character created by PEI native Lucy Maud Montgomery in her series of books for young readers.

Feisty Anne, with her red pigtails and straw bonnet, remains beloved more than a century after her literary debut. Most cruise lines offer a variety of excursions to the place that inspired Montgomery, a farm estate now known as Green Gables Heritage Place. In addition to a museum that chronicles Montgomery's life and literary works, this Canada National Historic Site encompasses the farm and surrounding woodlands that inspired the author.

Important to know: Tours are generally four to seven hours. If you're a tried-and-true Anne fan, ensure the tour you book allows enough time to explore both the museum and grounds at Green Gables Heritage Place, about 40 minutes from Charlottetown. If your port call is long enough, you might also be able to book separate tickets for "Anne & Gilbert, The Musical," staged in Charlottetown from late May to early October.

Charlottetown culinary tour

Charlottetown is an atmospheric spot to take a foodie walking tour and sample a variety of local specialties. On the menu: oysters, mussels, lobster rolls, french fries made with local PEI potatoes, craft beer and more. Tip: If you're not completely full, stop at Cows to sample the local ice cream — and buy a bag of Cow Chips (chocolate-covered potato chips) to savor later.

Important to know: Foodie tours generally last about three hours and require you to walk about two miles.

Quebec City, Quebec

england tour from canada

A stroll through Old Town

You'll feel like you've been transported back hundreds of years and across the Atlantic to France as you explore the photogenic streets of Quebec City's Old Town with your guide.

Founded in 1608 by French explorer Samuel de Champlain, this UNESCO World Heritage Site charms visitors. Highlights include Lower Town's Place Royale, the city's first settlement, and Le Quartier Petit-Champlain, its first shopping street.

In Upper Town, you'll explore sites that include the Place d'Armes, Dufferin Terrace and Place de l'Hotel de Ville, all while being mesmerized by the towering Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac. On some tours, you'll head inside this landmark hotel — constructed in 1893 and inspired by the castles of France — for afternoon tea and pastries. Other strolls conclude with a wine tasting.

Important to know: These walking tours are generally about three hours across hilly and cobblestoned streets.

Montmorency Falls

Just 20 minutes from Quebec City in the rural Island of Orleans, known for its photogenic villages, Montmorency Falls cascades 270 feet down a cliff face into the Saint Lawrence River. The drop is one and a half times that of Niagara Falls.

Some tours here visit the base of the falls for a photo op, while others include a tram ride to the top for spectacular close-up views from a suspension bridge. Some Montmorency excursions also combine a visit to Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupre, a late-19th-century basilica considered one of the top Catholic shrines in North America. Others stop at a sugar shack where you can sample maple candy and other treats.

Important to know: Tours to Montmorency Falls are typically three to four hours long.

Old Montreal walking tour

Montreal, the second-largest French-speaking city in the world after Paris, is also home to an atmospheric cobblestoned Old Town. This must-see neighborhood is known as Vieux-Montreal and dates to the city's founding in 1642.

Here, you'll find the landmark Place d'Armes and the neo-Gothic Notre-Dame Basilica (its interior is awash in heavenly blue). There's also the Place Jacques-Cartier, lined with cafes. The adjacent Old Port, which stretches along the Saint Lawrence River, is a vibrant mix of historic and modern buildings.

Some Old Montreal walking excursions combine top sites with a culinary tour that can include tastes of everything from French pate and cheese to smoked meats and Portuguese natas (puff pastry).

Important to know: Walking tours of Old Montreal are usually two and a half to three hours in length, with most of that time spent on your feet.

Montreal highlights city tour

If walking tours aren't your thing, you can also get a great overview of Montreal via a bus excursion that visits many of the city's architecturally dynamic neighborhoods.

Notable spots include Old Montreal and Notre-Dame Basilica, the city's modern downtown business district, leafy 500-acre Mount Royal Park, Golden Square Mile with its historic Victorian and Renaissance homes, and the east side with its iconic Olympic Stadium.

Important to know: City tours by bus generally last three hours and are mostly panoramic, meaning you'll spend as much as two-thirds of your time on the bus. There might be three or four stops for photos and a quick visit to Notre-Dame Basilica of Montreal.

Princess Anne to jet off on Royal tour just days before Prince Harry is set to return to UK

Princess Anne will jet off on a royal tour just days before Prince Harry is set to return to the UK.

The Princess Royal will travel to Canada from May 3 to 5 on an official visit to the Commonwealth country.

Prince Harry is also expected to return to the UK only a few days after his aunt returns from her tour for an Invictus Games event.

The Invictus Games 10th Anniversary Service was listed on St. Paul’s website for May 8, and on the official running order, the prince is set to speak at the service.

Harry’s wife, Meghan, is “rethinking” the trip as she doesn’t feel safe returning to the UK after Harry lost a court case over his police protection in Britain, according to a source.

Anne last visited Canada in 2023 when she visited the country twice within one month.

Apart from the date and country, the Palace has not released any further details of the princess’s visit.

In May 2023 the princess travelled to Canada to mark the 175th anniversary of the 8th Canadian Hussars.

Only a few weeks later in June 2023, Anne returned to attend a conference in Banff, Alberta in her role as President of The Duke of Edinburgh Commonwealth Study Conferences.

Princess Anne, who is widely regarded as the hardest-working royal, will be undertaking royal engagements two days before her royal tour and will get back to work on May 8.

On her trip to Canada last year, the Princess Royal was greeted by hundreds of people lining the streets hoping for a glimpse of the royal.

The princess has already undertaken an overseas tour to Sri Lanka and Dubai this year.

LATEST ROYAL NEWS:

・ Anne 'phenomenally popular' as King's sister 'highly trusted'

・ Meghan adds secret personal touch to her new lifestyle brand

During her visit to the Middle East in February, the royal attended the Seafarers Awareness and Orientation Day in Jebel Ali, a port town in Dubai.

In January, the royal went on a three-day visit to Sri Lanka with her husband , Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence, at the request of the Foreign Office.

On their trip, the couple visited the Commonwealth War Graves Commission Cemetery in Colombo and concluded the trip by making a speech about the relationship between Sri Lanka and the UK.

Last year, the princess undertook between 12 and 14 engagements in an average week.

Charli XCX and Troye Sivan are about to transform arenas across North America into raves from "1999."

The British hyperpop phenom, 31, and the Aussie pop star, 28, announced on Wednesday, April 17 that they're going on a joint headlining tour in 2024 titled Charli XCX & Troye Sivan present: Sweat. The run of 21 shows is a highly anticipated effort among fans of the two stars, who have long been friends and frequent collaborators.

The hitmakers — who collaborated on "1999" and "2099" off the 2019 album Charli — will play a handful arenas across the U.S. and Canada in the fall. The "Von Dutch" singer and the "Rush" singer will hit the road together in mid-September, kicking off Sweat in Detroit on Sept. 14.

Harley Weir

The superstars will play throughout September and into October, eventually wrapping up on Oct. 23 in Seattle. They'll make stops at iconic venues like New York City's Madison Square Garden and Los Angeles' Kia Forum, in addition to major cities like Philadelphia, Boston, Chicago, San Francisco and others.

Charli XCX and Sivan will also bringing along a special opening act: the British alt-hip-hop/electronic star Shygirl .

Stuart Winecoff

According to a press release, fans can expect the "Vroom Vroom" artist and the "One of Your Girls" singer to turn "venues into raves."

Their co-headlining concerts are set to feature "exhilarating performances, stunning visuals, and infectious beats," and act as "a testament to their commitment to inclusivity and diversity within the music industry," per the release.

Both of the avant-pop musicians shared a tour teaser on Instagram . The brief clip features flashing imagery of the two singers, along with minimalist, brightly colored posters with the tour dates that appear to be inspired by rave flyers.

Sweat comes nearly one year after Sivan released his acclaimed, third studio album Something to Give Each Other in October 2023. The project's lead single, " Rush ," garnered to nominations for best pop dance recording at best dance video at the 2024 Grammys .

The upcoming string of live dates will also come on the heels of the release of Charli XCX's new album Brat , which is due out on Friday, June 7.

The Pop 2 artist kicked off the album release cycle of her follow up to 2022's Crash in late February when she dropped "Von Dutch." Since then, she's released a remix of the track featuring Addison Rae and her longtime producer A.G. Cook, as well as the singles "Club classics" and "B2b."

Live Nation

Sweat won't be the only time Charli XCX is hitting the road this year. In addition to a handful of festival dates this spring and summer, she'll also be playing a short stint of headlining gigs in support of the release of Brat in N.Y.C., Chicago, Los Angeles, Mexico City and São Paulo in June.

Once the singer-songwriter's dates with Sivan wrap, she'll also embark on an arena tour of the U.K. in late November and early December to close out 2024.

Tickets to Sweat kick off with a presale. Fans are able to register for the advanced ticket sale now until Thursday, April 25 at sweat-tour.com . The artist presale will then kick off on Thursday, April 25 at 10 a.m. local time.

The general ticket sale will follow on Friday, April 26 at 10 a.m. local time on LiveNation.com .

Air Canada pilots declare emergency during transatlantic flight from Toronto

Latest Videos

A routine Air Canada flight from Toronto Pearson Airport to London, England, declared an emergency on Thursday at the tail end of its journey across the Atlantic Ocean.

According to Aviation Source News , flight AC858 was travelling over the Atlantic Ocean near Northern Ireland when the emergency declaration was made.

The aircraft reportedly had less than an hour of its journey remaining when the emergency call came in. The aviation news website notes that the emergency was serious enough to prompt the use of a Squawk Code 7700 , indicating a serious issue onboard the aircraft.

The code can be inputted by the aircraft's pilots or instructed by air traffic control (ATC) and alerts the ground crew to prepare for the flight's arrival.

Initially, it was unclear what the nature of the emergency was, but later,  Aviation Source News determined that it was a medical emergency.

Pilots eventually changed the squawk code from 7700 to 5170, indicating that the emergency onboard was under control, and that the flight did not need to be diverted to a nearby airport.

The flight landed safely at Heathrow Airport at 3:14 p.m. local time without further incident.

Google Maps and Search updates highlight sustainable ways to travel

Updates just in time for Earth Day.

A view of Chicago on Google Maps running on a ThinkPhone by Motorola

What you need to know

  • Google is rolling out a couple of updates for Maps and Search that are designed to aid users in finding more sustainable ways to travel.
  • For Maps, users will find low-carbon travel alternatives alongside driving routes while Search picks up long-distance information for trains and buses.
  • Google is also bringing more awareness to emissions from flights for developers creating apps and websites.

Ahead of Earth Day next week, Google is bringing a few updates to Maps and Search that may help users make better-informed choices around more "sustainable" methods of travel.

Google Maps is set to pick up a feature that displays low-carbon alternatives when traveling. The company states users in Maps will soon find routes for walking and public transit alongside driving routes.

However, Google will only do this if "travel times are comparable and practical" so you won't be too delayed.

Google is starting to show low-carbon alternatives for those traveling using Google Maps.

These low-carbon alternatives will appear in "over fifteen cities" worldwide. This includes Amsterdam, Barcelona, London, Montreal, Paris, Rome, and Sydney. Google will begin rolling this feature out today (April 17) for Maps.

The second feature involves Google Search, as users can now inquire about long-distance trains and buses. For instance, the company says users can search for "Boston to Philadelphia train" and quickly discover schedules and ticket prices in a neat table below the search bar.

Google Search will now offer information on schedules and tickets for long-distance trains and buses.

Google Search will provide links for users who need to book their tickets when selecting a result that best suits them. Joining this update, Google states it will add train route suggestions as an alternative when searching through the Flights app for a plane to catch.

Also rolling out today, users will find schedules for trains in 38 countries, including the U.S. For buses, Google is adding support to 15 countries, also including the U.S.

Google is also looking to increase awareness regarding airplane emissions. The post states that the company is bringing its Travel Impact Model (TIM) to its developer API. This will let app creators display flight emission information on their products or websites.

Additionally, developers can pick up a Google Sheets add-on and the TIM emissions calculator to help estimate a flight's amount per person. Google states this arrives as an additional tool alongside its Flights app , which already displays such information for those who are curious.

These updates are rolling out today (Apr. 17) for users. If you're not yet seeing the features, give the app a little more time today and through the rest of the week.

Taylor Swift's ‘Functioning Alcoholic’ Tortured Poets Lyrics Tie In With Comments She Made About The Eras Tour

The lyric opens her latest single "Fortnight".

Taylor Swift dropped her 11th studio album, The Tortured Poets Department and of course, everyone can’t stop talking about it. It’s filled with metaphors and confessional tales about her fling with The 1975’s Matty Healy , the end of her long-term relationship with Joe Alwyn , and her ever-growing, untamable fame. As per usual, she digs deep, opening up about some of her inner struggles within her songwriting. Her single from the album, “Fortnight", which features Post Malone, is no exception. In the song, she has a lyric about being a “functioning alcoholic,” which aligns with comments she made recently about giving up drinking during her Eras tour.

“Fortnight” sets the tone for the album, bringing up themes of controversial love and inevitable heartbreak. It also references a rare Taylor Swift reference to alcoholism, which is a theme that the singer has yet to explore. In the song, she sings :

I was a functioning alcoholic, 'Til nobody noticed my new aesthetic.

Swift has made reference to alcohol use plenty of times in her later work. For example, in “Delicate,” she says “We can’t make any promises now, can we babe, but you can make me a drink” and in “Death By A Thousand Cuts” she laments “I get drunk, but it's not enough.” However, this is the first time the singer seems to reflect negatively on her own alcohol use in the wake of heartbreak, even going as far as to call herself an alcoholic. It’s a brave move, and especially because she opens the album with the song.

This negative look on drinking aligns with her comments towards drinking on tour. During her 2023 interview for Time Person of the Year , she admitted to giving up alcohol while she was in the midst of the Eras tour. While she had fun during the Grammys and rewarded herself with a drink or two, in general, she is sober during her nationwide tour. She said:

Doing that show with a hangover. I don’t want to know that world.

Even if Swift decides to be sober on tour, she hasn’t given up alcohol for good. After the first leg of the Eras tour wrapped, she celebrated with a glass of wine , which was super relatable. She also chugged a beer while watching boyfriend Travis Kelce win the Super Bowl, and seemed to be having some boozy fun at Coachella this year. Swift has had a straight-laced reputation (no pun intended), but I wouldn’t underestimate her ability to also be the life of the party. It seems like she's been able to strike up a healthy balance, at least in the last year, and hopefully this continues as we enter a new Taylor Swift era .

While Swift is likely not an alcoholic and the lyric is more metaphorical than literal, her relationship with drinking and sobriety is something she rarely discusses, and really showcases that she is digging even deeper in The Tortured Poets Department . The album might be her most personal yet, which is certainly saying something. She is known for her diaristic lyrics, and this time around she’s not holding anything back. Swifties are going crazy with memes and theories while dissecting her latest discography, and it’s truly remarkable how open she is despite Swift’s immeasurable notoriety.

This lyric in “Fortnight” is just one of many confessional lyrics in The Tortured Poets Department, which is now available to stream on Spotify or Apple Music . You can also see her astounding concert performance in her film, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour , which is now streaming for Disney+ subscribers . The “Bejeweled” singer always has something new up her sleeve, so make sure to consult our feature on new Taylor Swift music and other projects for Swifties to look forward to .
