Canada's Tourist Visa: Your Questions Answered

You may be wondering how you can visit Canada and what procedure you need to follow. Get ready to uncover all the answers as we dive into the details of tourist visas, from eligibility and application procedures to travel tips and restrictions.

What is Canada’s Tourist Visa?

In essence, it allows you to travel to and around Canada for a limited period, typically up to 6 months. It's important to note that while on a tourist visa, engaging in work or study activities is prohibited, aligning with the visa's intended scope and restrictions. Its primary purpose is to enable tourists to experience Canada's wonders and connect with its way of life.

What is the Difference Between a Tourist Visa and an eTA?

When planning a trip to Canada, it's crucial to understand the distinction between a Tourist Visa and an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA). These two entry permits serve different purposes and apply to different travelers.

Tourist Visa

A Tourist Visa, also known as a Visitor Visa, is a traditional visa that allows foreign nationals to enter Canada for a temporary stay, typically up to six months. It's a document placed in your passport and is obtained through a Canadian consulate or embassy. Tourist Visas are typically required for citizens of countries that are not visa-exempt or eligible for an eTA.

eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization)

An eTA, on the other hand, is an electronic entry requirement designed for visa-exempt foreign nationals who are traveling to Canada by air. It's a simpler and faster way to gain entry clearance than a full-fledged visa. The eTA is electronically linked to your passport and is valid for up to five years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. It's crucial to note that the eTA is only applicable if you're flying to Canada; if you're arriving by land or sea, you won't need an eTA.

No. Canada eTA is NOT a visa. It’s just an online authorization that you would need to obtain prior to your trip to Canada.

You CANNOT use ESTA (United States Electronic System for Travel Authorization) to enter Canada. ESTA is a travel authorization to enter the US. It cannot be used for Canada. Even if you hold a valid ESTA, you would still need to apply for eTA to travel to Canada.

Canada eTA is valid for 5 years or until the expiry of your current passport, whichever is earlier. eTA is also linked to a specific passport, so if you get a new passport for any reason, you must apply for a new eTA.

How long can you stay in Canada with an eTA?

You can stay up to 6 months in Canada with an eTA.

How many times can you enter Canada with an eTA?

Canada eTA is multiple-entry and valid for 5 years. Once you obtain your eTA, you can travel to Canada as many times as you want within that 5 years period.

Canada eTA application process

You can apply for Canada eTA online at Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website.

Canada eTA status

You can check your Canada eTA status on eTA Status Tool provided by IRCC. After your eTA is approved, you can use this tool to check the validity and print a copy if needed.

Documents to carry when entering Canada on an eTA

  • Original passport

CANADA TOURIST VISA (TRV)

A Canada tourist visa or visitor visa is formally known as Canada Temporary Resident Visa (Canada TRV). You need a Canada TRV if you are from a visa REQUIRED nationality.

Canada tourist visas can be applied either ONLINE or by mailing a PAPER application to the consulate.

I highly recommend applying ONLINE. This guide focuses on the online application only. There are several advantages to applying online. It’s fast. It ensures everything is complete and correct. You only need to send your passport after your visa is approved.

Validity of Canada tourist visa

Canada tourist visas are usually issued for 10 years or until the expiration of your current passport.

  • Your passport expiry: Nov 14, 2029
  • Applied for your Canada visa online: Feb 01, 2020

Your visa will be valid from March 01, 2020, to Nov 14, 2029.

Date of issue: Mar 01, 2020

Date of expiry: Nov 14, 2029

NOTE If your passport is expiring soon, renew your passport first. And then apply for your Canada tourist visa, that way you can get the tourist visa for 10 years.

You can stay in Canada for up to 6 months or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. Occasionally, the immigration officers at the airport write an exit date on your entry stamp. This exit date can be less than 6 months. You must exit Canada within the exit date.

Documents required for Canada tourist visa

The following documents are required for Canada tourist visa.

  • Completed and signed Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) Application “Form IMM5257”
  • Completed family information “Form IMM5645”
  • Proof of financial support (last 4-month bank statements or payslips or employment letter)

  • Completed “Schedule 1 Form 5257”
  • Letter of explanation of your trip (optional, a cover letter explaining your purpose of travel to Canada)

All forms can be downloaded from your application page.

Provide all pages of your old and new passports that have stamps or visas. This will ensure you have a considerable travel history.

NOTE If you have traveled to Canada in the last 10 years or hold a valid US non-immigrant visa, your application may be processed in 2 to 5 working days under the CAN+ program.

What is CAN+ visa program?

Canada Immigration and Citizenship (CIC) has started asking applicants for visas, stamps and travel history for the last 10 years.

Applicants who have traveled to Canada in the last 10 years or hold a valid US non-immigrant visa are considered for CAN+ expedited program. If qualified, some additional documentation is not required and the application is processed within 2-5 working days.

At the beginning of your application, you will be asked questions specific to previous travel to Canada and the United States to determine your eligibility. You will be asked to upload less documentation if you are determined as eligible.

Even though you qualify for the CAN+ expedited program, your application may take several days to process. There are many factors involved. So do not count on the CAN+ program. Instead, follow the current processing times and apply for Canada visitor visa well in advance.

Canada tourist visa fee

Canada tourist visa fee is $100 CAD. The fee must be paid using a credit or debit card in CAD only. Since the fee is in CAD, your bank may charge a foreign transaction fee.

Biometric procedure

Biometrics are mandatory for all Canada tourist visa applicants. Your fingerprints are scanned and your photograph is taken during the biometric appointment.

NOTE Biometrics are valid for 10 years. If you have given your biometrics in the last 10 years as part of a Canada visitor, work or study visa, you are NOT REQUIRED to give your biometrics again.

You can use the Biometric Validity Tool on the IRCC website to check if your biometrics are still valid.

If your biometrics are still valid, you do not need to pay the biometric fee and do not need to give biometrics.

The following are the steps for biometrics.

STEP 1: Pay your biometric fee

The biometric fee for Canada tourist visa is $85 CAD. The fee must be paid using a credit or debit card in CAD only.

You can pay the biometric fee when you submit your visa application or at a later time. It’s highly recommended to pay your biometric fee when you submit your visa application. Paying later will delay your biometrics and eventually your visa process.

STEP 2: Receive biometric instruction letter within 24 hours

If you have paid your biometric fee when submitting your visa application, you will receive your biometric instruction letter within 24 hours of application submission.

STEP 3: Schedule biometric appointment at your nearest VAC

After you receive your biometric instruction letter, you will have 30 days to give your biometrics. Failing to give biometrics within 30 days will result in visa refusal.

Follow the instructions in your biometric instruction letter and schedule a biometric appointment at your nearest Visa Application Center (VAC) or Application Support Center (ASC) .

Once you schedule your biometric appointment, you will receive a biometric appointment confirmation letter from VAC or ASC.

If you have temporary injuries on your fingers and/or your face, you must wait to give your biometrics. You should contact IRCC customer support to request additional time for your biometrics appointment.

If you have permanent injuries on your fingers and/or face, you can continue with your biometrics appointment. The staff at VAC can scan as many fingers as possible and take your photograph.

STEP 4: Gather documents for biometric appointment

Print your biometric instruction letter and biometric appointment confirmation. Some VACs require a consent form. If your VAC requires one, you will see instructions about it in your biometric appointment confirmation.

STEP 4: Appear in-person at the VAC on your appointment day

On your appointment day, carry the following documents

  • Biometric instruction letter
  • Biometric appointment confirmation
  • Consent form (if required)

Your fingerprints will be scanned and your photo will be taken. To avoid any issues with your fingerprint or photo, follow the below instructions.

  • Make sure your 10 fingers are free of any temporary injuries, cuts and cracks
  • Make sure your 10 fingers are free of paint, oil, grease, etc.
  • Make sure your face is free of any temporary injuries, sunglasses, hats, etc.
  • Wear a bright color shirt or T-shirt

If you traveled to Canada in the last 10 years or hold a valid US non-immigrant visa, your application MAY BE expedited under CAN+ program where your application will be processed in just a few days.

Processing your application in CAN+ expedited program is at the discretion of CIC. So, do not completely rely on that. Instead, follow the timeline and apply for Canada visitor visa at least 3 months before your travel.

Passport submission

When your Canada tourist visa application is approved, you will be notified via email. You must submit or mail your original passport to your nearest VAC or ASC. The VAC or ASC will then send your passport to the Consulate of Canada for the visa sticker.

Customer support

There is no dedicated customer service. You can track your application status online. If you have to contact CIC for any reason, use the IRCC Web Form . For other inquiries, you can contact your nearest VAC.

Why is my application not being processed in CAN+ expedited program

Even though you qualify for CAN+ expedited program, your application may take several days to process. The application process took more than 30 days for some readers with a travel history to Canada and/or hold US visas. There are many factors involved and ultimately it’s at the discretion of CIC whether to process your application quickly.

My advice is to just follow the regular processing timeline. Check the current processing times and apply well in advance.

How relevant is travel history for Canada visa?

Travel history will improve your chances of visa approval. It can also speed up the process. If you have traveled to Canada in the last 10 years or hold a valid US visa, your application may be processed quickly under CAN+ expedited program.

So, you’re thinking about going to Canada “eh”? It’s a beautiful country with so much to offer but where do you start? Canada is the second largest country in the world, so it can be challenging to fit everything in for a one month long trip. I’ve simplified the planning process for you, detailing transportation, accommodation, activities and everything in between so you don’t need to. This 1 month Canada Itinerary is perfect for first timers and you’ll see the best the country has to offer. We start on the west coast and make our way over to the east, but you could always do this itinerary in reverse if that works best for you. There are a number of Canada itinerary options you could do, but this one I have put together will take you to the best cities and highlights to see.

Now let’s get into the good stuff!

Table of Contents

The Best Time To Visit Canada

Canada’s climate varies tremendously and should be considered when planning your 1 month Canada itinerary. There are warm and sunny days in summer, July to August, and then there can be sub zero temperatures in winter, December to February. I guess, it depends on what you want out of Canada. Do you want to visit the ski fields and maybe work a season, or two? Are you wanting to see the Northern Lights, best viewed from November to March. Maybe you love sport and want to experience an Ice Hockey game during the season running from October to June. Or would you like to see Grizzly and Black bears in their natural habitats during May to October. It just depends on what you want to see, but really, any time is a good time to visit Canada.

Best Canadian Transport Options

As you can imagine, due to the sheer size of Canada, knowing how you’re going to get from place to place during your Canadian holiday is a must. There are a variety of options that work for different budgets, so there’s something for everyone!

Travel Canada by Car or Campervan

If you’re looking for the freedom to travel at your own pace, hiring a car or campervan might be your best bet. There are many places in the mountainous areas of Canada where there isn’t access to public transit, making this option one of the most popular among tourists. There are a variety of car rental companies to choose from. Each with comparable prices, allowing you to pick which one works for you. Campervans also take accommodation out of the picture, combining your stay and transportation. You can find affordable campervan rentals in Canada with Wicked Campers .

Travel Canada by Train

Travelling by train might be one of the best ways to see Canada. After all, you can kick back and relax, while taking in the beautiful views throughout the entire journey! There are many options when it comes to train travel but the most popular is Via Rail  which is the government run train system. Then there is the  Rocky Mountaineer , a world-renowned and privately-owned train system. You can find trips from coast to coast, as well as shorter distances. Keep in mind that since the train provides a once in a lifetime view and experience, it comes at a higher price point than other modes of transportation!

Travel Canada by Bus

It is doable to travel through Canada on a bus but will take a little more planning, coordinating and a resilient attitude! Local transit throughout major cities and towns have great bus routes and for longer journeys, you can hop aboard a Greyhound bus . The bus will take longer than most other modes of transportation, so it’s best for those who aren’t on a strict timeline!

Travel Canada by Plane

Of course, air travel is often the most convenient option to get from place to place within Canada because it’s such a large country. With that being said, flights are often shockingly priced for the distance. There are many airlines that fly within Canada, the most popular and reputable being Air Canada and WestJet . A few budget airlines have recently popped up, such as Flair Airlines and Swoop (an offshoot of WestJet), making air travel in Canada more affordable!

How Much Spending Money Do I Need for A Trip to Canada?

How long is a piece string? It is hard to put an exact amount to how much spending money you will need to travel around Canada. I suggest you pay for as much as possible beforehand. Your flights , rental car and accommodation . Then you only need to worry about spending money for food, petrol and splurges going out and on souvenirs. One way to reduce your food cost is to look for accommodation that offers breakfast. And take your money in a variety of ways – cash, credit and debit card. So if you have under-budgetted your spending in Canada, you have access to money.

1 Month Canada Itinerary

While a month may not feel like enough time to see all of Canada, you’ll be able to cover quite a lot of ground! This 1 month Canada Itinerary will get you started and help you plan an amazing adventure. Though there are many options to travel Canada, as mentioned above, I feel driving is the best option. So consider this itinerary as a one month road trip of Canada.

Days 1-3 Vancouver, BC

Downtown Vancouver With Snow Capped Mountains Behind.

Beautiful Vancouver City with mountains behind

This Canadian itinerary starts or ends in Vancouver . Vancouver is one of the largest cities in Canada, with lots of action going on year round! With a relatively warm climate (for Canada), there are many outdoor activities to partake in. Maybe get your bearings from the Vancouver Lookout , where you will receive 360 degree views of the city. A visit to the iconic Stanley Park to wander amongst the totem poles is a must. Afterwards heading by Canada Place where you can take in the beautiful Vancouver waterfront and take a photo with the 2010 Olympic cauldron !

On a rainy day, spend your time wandering through the Vancouver Art Gallery . Or head about 20 minutes out of the city to walk along the Capilano Suspension Bridge ! The rain and fog will only add to the stunning scenery. There are also many unique neighbourhoods such as Gastown, Chinatown and Yaletown that are worth checking out during your stay. Each offer different shopping and dining options, so you can’t go wrong.

Maybe take a ferry across to Vancouver Island where you will find the capital of British Columbia, Victoria. Victoria boasts stunning natural beauty and has a rich heritage. Visit the Parliament Buildings and the Royal BC Museum or take a ride in a horse pulled carriage down the cobblestone streets.

One of the best ways to to discover Vancouver is to go on the Vancouver Hop On Hop Off . Yes, it can be touristy. At the same time, it takes you to all the best parts of Vancouver. It also tells you why you should visit the place, and allows you to get on and off so you can spend more time in different places.

YOU CAN PURCHASE YOUR VANCOUVER HOP ON HOP OFF TICKET HERE

Time in Vancouver: 3 days Where to stay in Vancouver: For a hostel, try Samesun Vancouver or HI Vancouver Downtown . If you’re after a hotel, Blue Horizon and Hotel BLU are great options!

Days 4-8 The Rocky Mountains

Lake Moraine. Crystal Clear Lake With Rocky Mountains Reflecting In The Lake In The Canadian Rocky Mountains.

Lake Moraine

Next up on our one month Canada itinerary are the Rockies! The Rocky Mountains span over different parts of British Columbia and Alberta and there are many breathtaking spots to hike, ski, snowboard, mountain bike and more, along the way. You’ll first want to head towards Whistler which is just a two hour drive north of Vancouver. Whistler is one of Canada’s favourite year-round destinations. Imagine sparkling lakes, charming villages nestled between snow-capped mountains.  No wonder so many people fall in love with this area and stay to work and ski in Canada . Then make your way across British Columbia until you reach Alberta. As you leave Whistler, take the Sea to Sky Highway for a magnificent drive!

Once you reach the Canadian Rockies in Alberta, you must spend some time in Jasper and Banff ! Jasper National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with dazzling glaciers, crystal-clear lakes, thundering waterfalls and mountains. Here you could undertake the Maligne Canyon Ice Walk, try cross-country skiing, snowshoeing or ice skating. And come out at night as Jasper National Park is a dark sky preserve, meaning it is an area where almost no artificial light is visible at night.

Banff is nestled high in the Canadian Rockies with a long list of things to do. Hike the 4.3 kilometre trail up Tunnel Mountain to get a great perspective of the town and valley. Or enjoy a meal by a warming fireplace in one of the lively streets which are lined with top-class restaurants and bars. And the shopping is pretty good too.

Your trip won’t be complete until you’ve made it to Lake Louise to see its emerald green water and rugged peaks and glaciers. Fantastic winter activities to be done here or canoeing in bright blue water during the summer months. Don’t be surprised if you see bears or other wildlife while hiking or venturing through the mountainous landscape! Always be prepared with bear spray or a whistle just in case.

Time in the Rocky Mountains: 5  days Distance from Vancouver: The drive directly from Vancouver to Banff is about 9 hours, so you’ll probably want to break the drive up and stop at a few places along the way! Where to stay in Whistler : For a hostel try Whistler Lodge Hostel or in one of the many ski lodges like the Pan Pacific Whistler Village Centre . Accommodation in Banff : For a hostel try Banff International Hostel . If after a hotel try the Hidden Ridge Resort or Moose Hotel and Suites . Accommodation in Jasper : For a hostel try Jasper Downtown Hostel or for a hotel Chateau Jasper .

Days 9-10 via Calgary, CAB

Calgary Stampede Is A Rodeo In Calgary Canada. There Are Clowns Who Distract Bucking Bulls And Horses.

Watch out for bucking bulls!

When you decide it’s time to say goodbye to the Rocky Mountains, you’ll want to make your way even further east. Saskatoon is a fairly long drive from Banff so you should consider stopping in Calgary to see what the city has to offer. If you go during the right time of year you may even catch the Calgary Stampede, which is a rodeo or really a 10 day event that takes place annually, every July. If there any other time of year there is plenty to do. Visit the Calgary Zoo or check out the views from Calgary Tower.

Accommodation in Calgary : For a hostel try Wicked Hostels . For a hotel try Best Western .

Afterwards, continue on your journey until you make it to Saskatoon. This underrated city is the largest city in the province of Saskatchewan is known as the Paris of the Prairies, because of it’s excellent cuisine. It’s an amazing spot for foodies who can check out the local farmer’s markets and restaurants. It’s also home to a large Jazz scene, so it may be worthwhile to plan your trip around the Saskatchewan Jazz Festival !

Distance from the Rockies: Saskatoon is about an 8 hour drive from Banff. Time in Saskatoon: 2 days Where to stay in Saskatoon: Book yourself an Airbnb for a night or stay at Park Town Hotel .

Days 12-13 Winnipeg

Winnipeg is another lesser-known city in Canada but it’s actually the largest city in Manitoba and has a relaxed feel. Some activities you can do while exploring Winnipeg include a trip to the Royal Canadian Min t    (maybe you’ll find out where toonies & loonies come from!), learn about the local indigenous culture and take part in the different arts and cultural events!

Distance from Saskatoon: Winnipeg is about an 8 hour drive from Saskatoon. Time in Winnipeg: 2 days Where to stay in Winnipeg: The Mere Hotel is a beautiful boutique hotel in the heart of Winnipeg. It won’t disappoint!

Days 14-15 Thunder Bay

Sleeping Giant Mountain In Thunder Bay Canada.

Sleeping Giant, Thunder Bay

As you leave Winnipeg and head for Ontario, the scenery will start to change. The Prairies are very flat and most of the land is used for farming but once you reach Northern Ontario, you’ll be surrounded by vast forests once again.

You’ll want to have a few days in Thunder Bay on this 1 month Canada itinerary to explore all of the natural wonders such as the Ouimet Canyon, the Kakabeka Falls and the most noteworthy landmark – the Sleeping Giant.

Distance from Winnipeg: Just another quick 8 hour drive until you reach Thunder Bay. Time in Thunder Bay: 3 days Where to stay in Thunder Bay: Book a cabin in Thunder Bay and fully immerse yourself in life up North or stay at the Courthouse Hotel if you want something more lavish! Or there is The Haven Hostel .

Days 16-19 Toronto, ON

Toronto City Skyline In Toronto Canada.

Toronto City

As you say farewell to Thunder Bay, you’ll head south towards Toronto – Canada’s largest city and one of the most multicultural cities in the world! Since the drive is quite long, you’ll want to make a few stops along the way and allow for a few extra days for travel. There are many National Parks on the way where you can stop for hiking and a dip in the lakes (if weather permits!). You can’t miss Algonquin Park , especially during the fall season when all of the leaves are changing colour!

Once you finally reach Toronto, there are heaps of things to see and do. Take a trip to the CN Tower  in the heart of downtown which was at one point, the tallest freestanding building in the world. Maybe brave the Edge Walk! Watch the Raptors go for another NBA Championship win at the Scotiabank Arena, or enjoy a Blue Jays game at the Rogers Centre . And Canadians love their ice hockey so check out the memorabilia at the Hockey Hall of Fame. Go for a stroll along the waterfront, spend an entire day visiting the Toronto Islands  and explore the many diverse neighbourhoods throughout the city! The nightlife can be found mostly along King Street West but you’ll be able to find a good bar just about anywhere throughout the city.

Distance from Thunder Bay: 14-15 hour drive Time in Toronto: 4 days Where to stay in Toronto: While Toronto receives many visitors each year, it’s not much of a backpacking city. More often than not, people stay in Airbnb’s or boutique hotels like the Drake Hotel .

Days 20-22 Niagara

Niagara Falls From The Canadian Side. Magnificent Waterfall.

Niagara Falls – From the Canada Side

A trip to Niagara can easily be a day trip if you’re short on time but it’s worth spending a few nights in the area if you can! When most people think of Canada, they usually think of Niagara Falls. The iconic falls are on the border of the United States and are a sight to be seen! Niagara is best viewed aboard a boat cruise or scenic flight.

BOOK A NIAGARA FALLS BOAT CRUISE HERE

There’s also Fallsview Casino  if you’re feeling lucky and the beautiful wine region of Niagara-on-the-Lake. Spend an entire day sipping on some of Ontario’s best vino and wandering through the quaint town.

Distance from Toronto: 1.5 hour drive Time in Niagara: 3 days Where to stay in Niagara: You can find a variety of hotels along Niagra Falls and b&b’s along Niagara-on-the-Lake!

DAYS 23-24 Ottawa

Did you think Toronto was Canada’s capital city? If so, you’re not alone but it’s actually Ottawa. That’s where you’ll stumble upon the Canadian Parliament and where the Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau resides. On your way to Ottawa, stop at the waterfall capital of the world – Hamilton! With over 100 waterfalls, this city is a great pit stop.

Canadian Beaver Tails Are Pastries In The Shape Of Beaver Tails With Sweet Things On Top.

Yum – Beaver Tails

If you’re visiting Ottawa in the winter, you must try skating on the Rideau Canal  and try a Canadian fave – Beavertails. Don’t let the name fool you, no beavers were harmed in the making of this delicious pastry!

Distance from Niagara: 5-6 hour drive Time in Ottawa: 2 days Where to stay in Ottawa: There are many hotels within walking distance to the city centre and Airbnb is also a popular choice among tourists! If after a hostel try the Ottawa Backpackers Inn or the Barefoot Hostel for women only. For a hotel try the Byward Blue Inn .

DAYS 25-27 Montreal, QC

Poutine, A Canadian Classic Meal Of Chips, Cheese And Gravy.

Poutine – a local food

Nearing the end of the one month Canada itinerary, it’s time to cross over to Quebec to say Bonjour! Montreal is just a hop, skip and jump away from Ottawa but it has an entirely different feel to it. Montreal has an amazing food and music scene, with large festivals such as Osheaga held each summer.

Head up to the Mount Royal Lookout  for a view of the entire city and explore the underground city in downtown Montreal – it’s never a dull moment there! Walk along the cobblestone streets and discovery Old Montreal’s galleries and historic sites. Maybe sample the local cuisine of poutine, French Fries served with cheese curds topped with brown gravey, Quebec’s favourite way to eat French fries!

Distance from Ottawa: 2 hour drive Time in Montreal: 3 days Where to stay in Montreal: Try out Hotel Bonaventure Montreal during your time in the city! or for a hostel try the M Montreal Hostel or the Samsun Montreal Central .

Days 28-29 (30) Quebec City

Stone Gate In Medievil Wall In Quebec City.

Through the Gate – Quebec City

Once you get to Quebec City, you’ll feel like you’re in a completely different country. With a European feel and French being the first language of most residents, it’s a pretty unique place to see! It is the only remaining fortified city in North America. You can discover all four surviving gates, Porte St. Jean, Porte St Louise, Porte Prescott and Porte Kent.

If you’re visiting during the winter, you can’t miss the Carnaval , where you can see ice sculptures and experience the best of winter in Quebec! You can also go dog sledding, tap a maple tree and taste fresh Canadian maple syrup.

Distance from Montreal: 3 hour drive Time in Quebec City: 3 days Where to stay in Quebec City: There are many places to choose from in Quebec City, the most prestigious and unique being Le Chateau Frontenac – the most photographed hotel in the world. The Hotel de Glace (Ice Hotel), which you can only stay at during the winter, for obvious reasons! For a hostel try the Auberge Jeunesse LouLou’s Backpacker Hostel.

If you end up having extra time on your itinerary, it’s worth extending your trip to see the east coast of Canada! Halifax and Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia should be next on your list.

Final Words on this 1 Month Canada Itinerary

While you certainly won’t be able to see all of Canada with limited time, this one month Canada itinerary should help you get started on an adventure of a lifetime! If you are in Canada on a working holiday you will have 1-2 years to enjoy much more it. If you have been or are planning a trip to Canada, I would love to hear about it in the comments following.

What an incredibly thorough post! I’ve only been to Vancouver & the west coast, but hopefully I’ll be able to change that in 2021. As with the U.S., I bet there are so many hidden gems that hardly anyone visits in the middle of Canada!

molly

Thunder Bay is out of the way but beautiful! Thanks for covering so many places in one post

Sharyn McCullum

Thunder Bay is beautiful and well worth the deviation.

Kristina

Love Canada – have mostly visited Vancouver and Ottawa but so much more to see!

Yep. Plenty to see in Canada. I hope you get back there.

Melissa Miller

Ohhh I love this guide!! I grew up in Michigan, so I was lucky enough to visit Toronto and Niagara Falls area, but I would LOVE to visit Montreal. And Vancouver is probably my favorite city!! I miss having it so close like when I lived in Seattle. Can’t wait to explore more of Canada.

Sounds like you have experienced a number of Canadian places. I hope you get back to explore more!

Tess

The rocky mountains are calling my name! I think this guide was made for me, Canada is definitely on the wishlist for future travels and adventures. I’d love to snowboard there too!

They called my name too! I am sure you would enjoy the ski fields.

Planet Hopper Girl

My best travel in 2019 was a solo trip to Toronto/Niagara. I left my heart in Canada and have a big itch to go back since. This is perfect to remind me of all the places I gotta get back to. Thank you Shelly!

You are welcome Shelly. I hope you get back to Canada soon and find your heart again!

Rebecca

I have had Vancouver on my list for a long time to visit! Looks like I’ll have a couple of more spot to add now.

That’s good. There is plenty to see and do in Vancouver. The longer you can stay the more you get to know the place.

Brittany

This is such an amazing guide! I have yet to visit Canada, but I really want to change that this year. This guide will be so helpful for choosing where I’ll visit!

Canada is an amazing place to visit. My itinerary gives first timers to Canada an overall view of some of the best bits! But I know there are plenty more best bits to experience. Next trip!

Megan

What a great itinerary! I’ve never been to Canada, but when I do I’ll be sure to stop in Ottowa for a Beaver Tail!

Thank you. It is aimed at first timers to get a feel for Canada. And definitely stop in Ottawa for a Beaver Tail – they are yum.

Josy A

Argh 1 month isn’t enough is it!? I could easily spend a month in each of these places and still feel like I only scratched the surface! I love that you saw a few of the best bits of this lovely country though!

Yeah I know, but you need to start somewhere. Next trip will hopefully be longer.

Sayali

A really useful article for a first-timer’s visit. Love how you’ve incorporated food in the itinerary.

One month is a great start to a visit in Canada. Hopefully it can be longer.

Amy Aed

Wow, this is such an in-depth post! I lived in BC and Alberta for a bit, and was meant to come back this year. One day…!

Canada is a fabulous place to visit and the longer you can spend in the country the more you can see and experience.

Tracy Hastie

This is a bucket list trip for me, I’d love to cross the whole country by train, but you’re making me think maybe I’d be missing out if I didn’t drive. Is there a culture in Canada of buying campervans for travel , like in New Zealand?

The thing with trains and buses is they have set routes so you cannot deviate. This is why hiring a car or camper van is the perfect option. Yes, there are camper vans in Canada to hire.

MacKenzie

I remember the first time I read about a beaver tail – it reminded me of something similar in California and I went into a deep dive for 20 minutes trying to figure out the difference, haha! Anyway, I’d definitely love more than a month in Canada, but I think this itinerary is a great start and it hits a ton of fantastic highlights.

Monica

I plan to visit Canada one day soon than later. This post has opened my eyes to how long my trip could possibly be. Thank you for this helpful travel guide.

Yes, this is a great way to extend your trip in Canada. There is plenty to see and do so try to make the time.

Amy

An ambitious itinerary!! I love all the details you give and info on transportation. I really need to see more of Canada!

Leah

What an amazing itinerary! A month in Canada would be a dream! Thanks for sharing.

Melinda

So much to see and do! I really want to get to Alberta. Jasper and Banff look gorgeous anytime of year!

There is plenty to see and do in Canada. One month in Canada could be just the start!

Alaina Thomas

Even a month does not seem like enough time to see everything Canada has to offer, but this itinerary hits all of the main spots!

Travelling Tam

Canada is somewhere I’d lovee to go back to for more than an extended long weekend layover! I actually nearly moved there but the visa process was too long and typically the day it came through was the day I set off to Australia instead as I was getting impatient ha. Anyway, I would want to go for a decent length of time, so this 1 month itinerary is great. I have saved it for when I make it over again!

Linda Jane

Spending a month in Canada would be amazing! I’d love to see the stunning scenery in the Rocky Mountains. Thanks for the inspiration!

Emma

So many great places to see in my country. I live in Vancouver and love it, and there’s probably enough to see in this province alone to spend a month here exploring all the islands and the interior and wine country. Great itinerary, and some places I can’t wait to visit again further from the west coast

Yvonne

I cannot wait for the day when we can spend a month traveling around Canada. This is a great itinerary and I am saving for future reference!

Jessy Hamel

I am saving this for sure. This is going to be a huge help when I go! Thanks so much!

Good. I hope you have a great time.

Hege

Wow, it is a dream of mine to visit the Rocky Mountains, your photo is stunning! Really a motivation to get started on the travel planning!

Elyse

Definitely saving this! I would love to do a big trip to Canada but looking at its size it’s hard to know where to go haha

Kelly Francois

This is a really good 1 month itinerary for a first time visitor. It covers a lot of Canada (half). As I live in Ontario, I would recommend only spending 1 day in Niagara Falls and then move onto Niagara on the Lake to the wineries for a day or two. There are also a plethora of world class beaches in Ontario. I agree with you on Quebec. It’s like a completely different country.

If you haven’t yet, I hope you get to see the east coast of Canada. It’s the complete opposite to Western Canada (which is my favourite part).

Thanks for the suggestion. I will look into it. There is just so much I could include.

Jennifer Femrite

This is helpful itinerary to explore Canada. I will save this a future resource! Thanks.

Thank you. I’ve tried to include as much as possible for a month in Canada.

This sounds like a dream trip. I would love to road trip around Canada for a month, but preferably in the summer because I live in the desert and don’t think I can handle the cold! I am definitely saving this for future travel planning!

Looove it! This is a great start for a month in Canada… although if I am honest, if I only had a month, I’d probably spend the whole time in the Rockies! 😀

Kim

What a great resource. I’ve only been to the west coast of Canada but would love to visit everywhere else. I’ll use this for research when I do go.

Kiki

The Rockies looks like an amazing place and if and when I visit I would love to spend a lot of time around there.

Sarah-Jayne McNaughton

This is a great itinerary! I love the suggestion of doing it in a campervan

By doing this 1 month Canada Itinerary in a campervan you will not only be taking your accommodation with you but have transport that you have the flexibility to travel around wherever you want to go.

Deirdre Jenkins

Great itinerary. It captures all the main areas to explore in Canada.

Courts

I love how detailed this itinerary is — it’s perfect! 🙂

Thank you. There is a lot to see in Canada. One month is not nearly enough, but it is a great start to spend 1 month in Canada.

Muzz

Wow. I absolutely appreciate the details. It still looks like one month isn’t enough. I might miss few spots to have more time at less places.

Yes, that is a possibility. Reduce the places to see to stay longer in others you really like – yep, why not! Lucky my itineraries are flexible and you can tweak them!

  • Canada covers a vast area of land. It is virtually impossible to see it all in one trip, regardless of how much time you have. Definitely choose one or two regions that you can explore in depth. You'll have a more fulfilling experience and you'll save yourself a lot of money. Every region is different so do some research to determine what appeals to you the most.
  • If you're hoping to cover vast distances, then flying is the most convenient way to get around the country. It is also one of the most expensive. Other options include taking trains, buses, or renting your own vehicle. Bus connections are decent but not great. They typically connect the largest cities. Having your own vehicle will allow you more flexibility and you will be able to delve into the experience on a different level.
  • One fun way to experience the national parks throughout the country is to travel with a RV. This gives you the added flexibility of having your own vehicle, and you have your accommodation with you wherever you go. Many of the campgrounds have adequate hookups for RVs so this is a great way to experience all that the country has to offer.
  • Wildlife spotting is a popular activity throughout the country. Whether you're looking for bears, whales, or something else, it's best to make sure you're traveling during the appropriate season. Also make sure you have a good guide with you as that can make all of the difference.
  • You'll find most major western chain restaurants throughout the country. Fast food options are abundant and cheap, but generally the quality is quite low. Instead, look for local options. These are everywhere in the larger cities, and available on a smaller scale in the more rural locations.

I have a visitor visa. Can I leave Canada and come back?

Help Centre what do you need help with?

The visitor visa is officially called a temporary resident visa.  There are 2 types of visas: single-entry visa and multiple-entry visa.

If you have a single-entry visitor visa

  • In most cases, you’ll need a new visa if you want to leave and come back to Canada
  • you’ll only visit the U.S. or St. Pierre and Miquelon; and
  • you’ll return to Canada before the end of your approved stay in Canada.

If you have a multiple-entry visitor visa

  • You can leave and come back to Canada multiple times as long as your visitor visa has not expired.

If you have an expired visitor visa

  • you’ll  only  visit the U.S. or St. Pierre and Miquelon, and
  • you’ll return to Canada  before  the end of your approved stay in Canada.

Before travelling back to Canada

You must meet all the necessary requirements, including all testing and quarantine requirements. A border services officer will make the final decision at the port of entry.

Foreign students and workers who got a temporary resident (visitor) visa in Canada

If there is a V-1 code on your visitor visa

This is not an error. Due to COVID-19, we have temporary measures in place to process visitor visa applications submitted from inside Canada.

  • Foreign students and workers who applied for a visitor visa in Canada since July 2021 may get a V-1 visitor visa.
  • You can use your V-1 visa to leave and re-enter Canada – the same way you would use your S-1 or W-1 visa.
  • You don’t need to request a different type of visa or follow up with the processing office or client support centre. A new visa will not be issued in this case.

Validity period is different on the V-1 visa

  • This is part of the temporary measures in place that will be in effect until further notice.
  • If your V-1 visa expires , you can apply for a new visitor visa .

Tourist visa frequently asked questions, visitor visa faqs, what kind of visa should i get to travel to canada.

If you are a citizen of a visa-required Country , one that is not visa exempt and requires documentation to enter Canada, you should apply for a Temporary Resident Visa, which is commonly known as a visitor visa. There are two types : a single-entry visa and a multiple-entry visa. Both are valid for a fixed period and cannot be used after they expire.

A multiple-entry visa lets you enter and leave Canada repeatedly while it is valid. It can be valid for up to 10 years at the officer’s discretion or one month before your passport expires, whichever is earlier. You must arrive in Canada on or before the expiry date on your visa.

A single-entry visa allows you to enter Canada only one time. Once you have left Canada, excluding travel to the United States and St. Pierre and Miquelon, you will need a new visa to travel back to and enter Canada.

If your visa is still valid and you are travelling only and directly to the United States (including its Territories and Possessions) or St. Pierre and Miquelon, you do not need a new Temporary Resident Visa ( Visitor Visa ) to return to Canada. If your visa expires prior to returning to Canada from this area, and you do not have any other valid status, such as a valid visitor record, work permit, study permit, or temporary resident permit, you will need to obtain a new temporary resident visa.

Do I need a visa if I am travelling through Canada without stopping or visiting?

Citizens of certain countries and territories must have visas when they enter Canada. If you need a visa to visit Canada, then you will need a Transit Visa to travel through Canada without stopping or visiting. This is true even if you are in Canada for less than 48 hours. There is no fee for a Transit Visa.

You may not need a transit visa if you are travelling to or from the United States. The Transit Without Visa program (TWOV) and the China Transit Program (CTP) allow certain foreign nationals to travel through Canada on their way to and from the United States without a Canadian transit visa, if you meet these requirements:

  • For TWOV: you are from Indonesia, Thailand, Taiwan or the Philippines; OR

You must also:

  • hold a valid U.S. visa;
  • travel on an approved airline; and
  • transit through a participating Canadian international airport.

How do I help a family member or friend apply to visit Canada?

Anyone who visits Canada from a temporary resident visa-required country must initially apply from outside the country. Your friend or family member must apply to the Canadian visa office responsible for his or her country or region. A visa officer will review the application and decide whether to issue a visa.

You may provide your family member or friend with a letter of invitation in support of their application. It should explain how you will help the person. For example, you may offer to pay for plane tickets or accommodation. A letter of invitation can help, but it does not guarantee the person will get a visa .

How do I get help if my visa application is refused?

Unfortunately, there is no formal appeal process if your application for a Temporary Resident Visa is refused . However, you can always re-apply and take into consideration the reasons for refusal. If you are able to address them and put together a stronger case, you will be able to increase your chances for success.

I have a visa. What can I expect when I arrive in Canada?

When you arrive at the port of entry in Canada, the border services officer will make sure you meet the requirements to enter Canada. The officer will authorize your stay by stamping your passport and/or issuing another document. If there is no stamp, handwritten date or document in your passport, your temporary resident status will expire six months from the day you arrived in Canada.

If you received a visitor record, student or work permit, the expiry date is marked on it.

How Much Bank Balance Is Required For A Canada Tourist Visa?

Published: November 8, 2023

  • Plan Your Trip

how-much-bank-balance-is-required-for-a-canada-tourist-visa

Introduction

Canada, with its breathtaking landscapes, vibrant cities, and welcoming culture, has become an increasingly popular destination for tourists. Whether you’re planning to visit iconic landmarks like Niagara Falls, explore the vibrant streets of Toronto, or immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the Canadian Rockies, a tourist visa is essential for most travelers.

One of the key considerations for obtaining a Canada tourist visa is meeting the financial requirements. The Canadian government wants to ensure that visitors have sufficient funds to cover their expenses during their stay without becoming a burden on the country’s resources.

While the specific amount of bank balance required varies depending on various factors such as the duration of your stay and whether you have a sponsor, it is crucial to have a clear understanding of the financial criteria to increase your chances of obtaining a Canada tourist visa.

In this article, we will explore the eligibility requirements for a Canada tourist visa and dive into the details of the bank balance criteria and documentation needed to prove sufficient funds. We will also provide tips to help you meet the financial requirements and successfully obtain your visa.

Eligibility for a Canada Tourist Visa

Before discussing the specific financial requirements, it’s important to understand the general eligibility criteria for a Canada tourist visa. According to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), individuals who wish to visit Canada as tourists must meet certain requirements:

  • You must have a valid passport to enter Canada.
  • You must be in good health and be able to convince the immigration officer that you will leave Canada at the end of your authorized stay.
  • You must have sufficient funds to cover your expenses in Canada.
  • You should not have any criminal record and be admissible to Canada.
  • You may be required to demonstrate strong ties to your home country, such as a job, assets, or family, to prove that you will return after your visit.

It’s important to note that meeting the eligibility requirements does not guarantee a visa approval. The final decision rests with the immigration officer reviewing your application.

Now that we have a basic understanding of the general eligibility criteria, let’s explore the financial requirements specifically related to the bank balance criteria for a Canada tourist visa.

Financial Requirements for a Canada Tourist Visa

When applying for a Canada tourist visa, you must demonstrate that you have enough funds to cover your expenses during your stay in the country. The Canadian government wants to ensure that visitors can afford the cost of accommodation, transportation, meals, and other necessities without relying on public assistance.

The specific amount of money required as proof of financial support may vary depending on various factors, including the duration of your stay and the number of family members accompanying you. However, as a general guideline, you should be prepared to show evidence of at least CAD $1,000 per month for your stay in Canada.

It’s important to note that this amount is subject to change and it is advisable to check the latest requirements when submitting your application. Additionally, it is important to have funds available not only for the duration of your stay but also for your return journey.

While having sufficient funds is essential, the Canadian government also considers other aspects of your financial situation, such as your ability to pay for your travel expenses and your financial ties to your home country. Having a stable income, employment, or other financial assets can increase your chances of obtaining a tourist visa.

Next, let’s take a closer look at the specific bank balance criteria for a Canada tourist visa and the documentation required to prove that you meet the financial requirements.

Bank Balance Criteria for a Canada Tourist Visa

When applying for a Canada tourist visa, one of the key factors is the bank balance criteria. This refers to the minimum amount of money you need to have in your bank account to prove that you have sufficient funds to support yourself during your stay in Canada. The exact amount required can vary depending on factors such as the duration of your visit and the number of family members accompanying you.

In general, it is recommended to have a bank balance that covers your estimated expenses during your stay in Canada. This includes accommodation, transportation, meals, health insurance, and any other essential expenses. The Canadian government typically suggests having a bank balance of at least CAD $1,000 per month for a single applicant. However, this amount may increase if you have dependents or if the cost of living is higher in the specific region you plan to visit.

In addition to having the required bank balance, it’s important to maintain this balance for a certain period of time before applying for the visa. The specific timeframe can vary, but generally, it is advisable to have the funds in your account for a minimum of three to six months. This helps establish that the funds are genuine and not a temporary deposit made solely for the purpose of the visa application.

Keep in mind that simply having a large amount of money in your bank account does not guarantee a visa approval. Immigration officers will assess various factors, including your financial stability, the source of the funds, and your ability to cover all expenses related to your visit.

Next, let’s explore the documentation you need to provide to prove that you meet the bank balance criteria for a Canada tourist visa.

Documentation to Prove Sufficient Bank Balance

When applying for a Canada tourist visa, you need to provide documentation to prove that you have sufficient funds to support yourself during your stay in the country. This documentation is crucial in demonstrating your financial stability and ability to cover all expenses related to your visit.

Here are some key documents you may need to provide as evidence of your bank balance:

  • Bank Statements: You will need to submit your recent bank statements, typically covering the last three to six months. These statements should clearly show your name, account number, and transaction history. Make sure the statements are official and bear the bank’s logo or stamp.
  • Proof of Income: If you are employed, you should provide documentation of your income, such as pay stubs, employment contracts, or tax returns. This helps establish that you have a regular source of income and can sustain your stay in Canada.
  • Letter of Support: If you have a sponsor, such as a family member or friend in Canada, they can provide a letter of support. This letter should include details about their relationship to you, their financial ability to support your visit, and a commitment to cover your expenses if necessary.
  • Investment or Property Documents: If you have investments, real estate, or other valuable assets, you can provide relevant documents to demonstrate your financial strength.

It’s important to ensure that all the documents you submit are clear, accurate, and in the required format. Additionally, if the documents are in a language other than English or French, you may need to provide a certified translation.

Remember, the documentation required may vary based on your individual circumstances and the discretion of the immigration officer reviewing your application. It is always a good idea to consult the official IRCC website or seek assistance from an immigration professional to ensure you have all the necessary documents in order.

Now, let’s move on to some tips to help you meet the bank balance requirement for a Canada tourist visa.

Tips for Meeting the Bank Balance Requirement

If you’re applying for a Canada tourist visa and need to meet the bank balance requirement, here are some helpful tips to increase your chances of success:

  • Plan your trip and budget wisely: Before applying for the visa, carefully plan your trip, including the duration of your stay and the estimated expenses. Create a realistic budget that covers all necessary expenses and ensure that you have enough funds to support yourself during your visit.
  • Start saving early: It’s advisable to start saving well in advance of your planned trip. This will allow you to accumulate the required bank balance over time and demonstrate a consistent financial history.
  • Maintain a stable financial situation: Immigration officers are more likely to approve visas for individuals with a stable financial situation. If possible, maintain a steady job or income source, and avoid large financial transactions or debts that could raise concerns about your financial stability.
  • Keep funds in one account: It’s recommended to have the required bank balance in one main account. This makes it easier to showcase your financial position and avoids confusion or questions about multiple accounts or transactions.
  • Provide additional financial proof: If you have additional sources of income or financial assets, provide supporting documentation such as investment statements, property ownership documents, or any other proof that demonstrates your financial stability.
  • Include a detailed cover letter: Along with your application, consider including a cover letter explaining your purpose of visit, your financial situation, and how you intend to cover all expenses during your stay. This can provide additional context and clarity to the immigration officer reviewing your application.
  • Seek professional guidance: If you are unsure about the requirements or need assistance with your application, it’s advisable to consult an immigration professional who can guide you through the process and help you put together a strong application.

By following these tips and ensuring that you have the necessary funds and documentation, you can increase your chances of meeting the bank balance requirement and obtaining a Canada tourist visa.

Now, let’s wrap up the article with a summary of the key points discussed.

Obtaining a Canada tourist visa requires meeting certain eligibility criteria, including demonstrating sufficient funds to cover your expenses during your stay. The bank balance requirement plays a crucial role in the visa application process, as it shows your financial stability and ability to support yourself without relying on public assistance.

To meet the financial requirements, it’s important to have a clear understanding of the specific bank balance criteria and provide the necessary documentation, such as bank statements, proof of income, and sponsorship letters if applicable. Additionally, planning your trip and budgeting wisely, starting to save early, and maintaining a stable financial situation can increase your chances of meeting the bank balance requirement.

Remember to carefully review the requirements and guidelines provided by the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and seek professional assistance if needed. Being thorough and organized in your application can significantly improve your chances of obtaining a Canada tourist visa.

Whether you’re planning to explore the picturesque landscapes, indulge in the diverse culinary scene, or immerse yourself in the vibrant culture, Canada offers a rich and unforgettable tourist experience. The biometric fee is part of your visa cost. Costs of digital photo and fingerprint are covered under this. Apart from this, if you have submitted the visa at the Visa Application Center, the core service costs are included.

How to Pay Canada Visa Application Fees

In order to pay the fees, you need a valid email address, access to a printer and a credit or Canadian debit card. After the payment is done online, print the receipt. Make sure the barcode is visible. Remember that the only method of payment is online.

The visa fee is non-refundable, under all circumstances. In case of visa rejection, the fee needs to be paid one again when reapplying. There are no exemptions in such cases. If you are a visa exempt visitor, applying for a super visa, you are not required to make any payments.

The next step after payment of the fees is to submit all the documents at your nearest Canadian embassy.

Planning a trip to Canada and wondering what is the best way to stay connected? Don’t waste money on high roaming charges or get frustrated by slow overseas data roaming plans. This is a complete guide for finding the best sim card for your trip to Canada.

Find out where to buy a prepaid sim card for Canada, the best e-sim cards for Canada, up to date prices as per January 2024, the best 4G/5G network in Canada, my recommendation, information about international sim cards and more.

Heads up! Canada is probably the most ridiculous country when it comes to prices for prepaid data plans: 1 GB data will cost you around $30 CAD ($22 USD)!

Have a look at my article with the best International sim cards in 2024  or even better my guide with the best e-sim cards for traveling to Canada in 2024  including everything you need to know about e-sims.

Prices for prepaid sim cards in Canada are through the roof and the value for money is INSANELY BAD! You are MUCH better off buying a Canada sim card online! Keep reading and you will understand...

The first thing I do in a new country is either buying a local prepaid sim card or getting an e-sim card to stay connected. In total I wrote more than 200 local prepaid sim card guides from all over the world: Asia ,  Europe , Guatemala , Brazil ,  Istanbul , Nairobi , Cairo , Cape Town , Lisbon , Oslo , Amsterdam , Hong Kong , Vietnam , New York , Bogota , Dominican Republic  and many more!

How I get to all these places? Traveltomtom is trying to visit every country in the world  and has been to more than 155 countries as of January 2024.

There are some pretty good deals for world sim cards with coverage in Canada. Also, most of the Mexico and USA prepaid sim cards cover all of Canada and data bundles are valid in Canada too with free roaming. Why buying a sim card for Canada

A local prepaid sim card is the cheapest way to stay connected and it is easy, reliable and gives you the fastest data speed connection! Therefore Traveltomtom normally always recommends buying a sim card on arrival in a new country.

Most hotels, bars, malls and restaurants offer free pubic WiFi in Canada, yet I still recommend you to buy a sim card in Canada. Having a working data connection can save you a lot of hassle and traveling gets simply more convenient. Canada is a HUGE country and staying connected while on long straight boring roads keeps you entertained, but what about getting directions from Google Maps, finding a nearby restaurant or ordering an Uber to get back to your hotel. Many reasons I can come up with to buy a sim card for your trip to Canada.

Keep in mind that surfing the web on free public WiFi is through an unsecured network. The use of a VPN is recommended!

My recommendation

Traveltomtom recommends a Telus Mobility prepaid sim card for Canada. Telus has the best 4G/5G network coverage in Canada and the best value prepaid sim card data plans: for $70 CAD ($52 USD) you get 20 GB data.

As you can see buying a prepaid sim card in Canada is very expensive and therefore it is wise to look at other ways to stay connected when traveling to Canada.

Where to buy a sim card for Canada

International airport on arrival.

Buying a prepaid sim card for Canada on arrival at the airport sounds like a great idea. In fact it would be one of the most convenient places to buy a sim card for Canada of course. Unfortunately the reality is that it is almost impossible to find a good prepaid sim card for tourists on an international airport in Canada.

For more info check out my guide for buying a sim card at Toronto Airport , but I can already tell you that it is not going to make you smile. The conclusion is the same as in this article: buy your sim card for traveling in Canada online! At the airports of Quebec, Vancouver, Edmonton, Ottawa it is all the same story.

Phone stores in city center

If you want the best prepaid sim card deals in Canada you will have to drive to a mall and walk into one of the official retail stores of the mobile internet operators. On top of that you can also get prepaid sim cards for Canada in bigger gas stations and convenience stores like 7Eleven, Dollarama and even in some grocery stores.

However, Traveltomtom does not recommend buying a sim card in these places as there is pretty much no service. Meaning, the staff has zero knowledge of the prepaid sim cards they are selling and you will have to do the activation yourself through the internet. All too complicated and not even cheaper than buying a sim card for Canada online.

TIP: When buying a Canada prepaid sim card bring your passport! You need it to register you prepaid sim card.

As I have mentioned several times above, Traveltomtom actually recommends you to buy a sim card for traveling to Canada on the internet. Whether you want a physical prepaid sim card or an e-sim card. Both options are cheaper than buying a local prepaid sim card on arrival in Canada.

Traveltomtom recommends ordering an e-sim card for Canada via SimOptions , Airalo or Nomad . Physical prepaid sim cards for Canada are only offered by SimOptions .

For more info check out my  comparison of the best e-sim cards for Canada in 2024 .

Mobile internet operators in Canada

Canada is a damn huge country, but not that many people live here. Surprisingly there are a lot of mobile internet providers in Canada. But are they all offering a temporary Canada sim card?

These are the 4 main mobile internet providers in Canada who all offer Canada wide pay as you go sim cards:

Telus Mobility

  • Virgin Mobile

Bell Canada

On top of that there are a handful local mobile internet providers like Freedom Mobile, Chatr, Videotron Mobile, WIND Mobile, etc. These providers do NOT operate Canada wide, but could still be a good fit if you do a city trip in Canada.

Prices prepaid sim cards in Canada

These are the Canada prepaid sim card prices and plans as per January 2024, which you can only buy in Canada in a phone store. $1 CAD = $0.74 USD and $1 USD = $1.35 CAD.

  • 2.5 GB data + unlimited minutes in Canada = $40 CAD - $30 USD
  • 4.5 GB data + unlimited calling in Canada = $45 CAD
  • 8 GB data + unlimited calling in Canada = $55 CAD - $41 USD
  • 10 GB data + unlimited calling in Canada = $75 CAD

All Virgin Mobile Canada prepaid sim card packages are valid for 30 days, max data speed is 4G, no 5G network access on Virgin Mobile prepaid sim cards. For more info have a look at the prepaid plans on the Virgin Mobile Canada website .

bell canada prepaid sim card plans 2024

Bell Canada prepaid sim cards are rather expensive:

  • 2.5 GB data + unlimited calling in Canada = $40 CAD - $30 USD
  • 8 GB data + unlimited calling in Canada = $55 CAD - $41 USD

Bell Canada offers the exact same prices for prepaid sim card deals as Virgin Mobile and Telus Canada. Also Bell does NOT allow prepaid sim cards to use the 5G network, max data speed is 4G. For more info check the  Bell Canada  website.

Rogers Canada

Exact the same prices for prepaid sim cards and the exact same conditions. For more info check the  Rogers Canada  website.

Best 4G/5G network in Canada in 2024

Now that we have seen the (ridiculous) prices for prepaid sim cards and data plans in Canada, let’s have a look at the best mobile network coverage in Canada so that we can determine what is the best sim card for traveling in Canada. Virgin Mobile operates on the Bell Canada network.

Is there 5G in Canada?

Yes, there is 5G in Canada. Bell, Telus and Rogers all have a 5G network these days. However, for prepaid sim card users it is still not available in 2024, only for postpaid users.

When buying a prepaid sim card in Canada the max data speed is 4G/LTE. However, a Tuque Mobile e-sim card for Canada does support 5G, see more info in the section about the best e-sim cards for Canada .

Telus Mobility Canada 4G/5G network coverage

telus 4g 5g network coverage map canada 2024

Bell Canada network coverage (also Virgin Mobile network)

bell mobility 4g 5g network coverage map canada 2024

Rogers Mobility Canada network coverage

rogers 4g 5g network coverage map canada 2024

Although the above mobile data network coverage maps are updated for 2024 they are not 100% accurate. However, they are a great reference to compare the 4G/5G networks of the mobile internet providers in Canada in 2024.

From the above Canada coverage maps updated for 2024 Traveltomtom concludes that there is not so much difference when it comes to the mobile data network coverage between the mobile internet operators in Canada.

Some operators have better network coverage than others in certain areas and then for other regions in Canada it is the other way around.

Especially if you are traveling to West Canada it is recommended to buy a Telus or Rogers prepaid sim card for Canada. Rogers has a great network In East Canada: Toronto, Ottawa , Quebec. But all the way in East Canada in places like  Halifax  you definitely want a Telus sim card.

Best prepaid sim card for Canada in 2024

From the above comparison of all the prepaid sim card deals and the mobile internet operators in Canada Traveltomtom comes to the very simple conclusion that buying a prepaid sim card in Canada is more expensive than ordering an international sim card or an e-sim card for Canada online.

Honestly speaking my Canada prepaid sim card comparison leads me to say that it almost feels like the Canada mobile internet providers have price agreements. They literally all offer the exact same prepaid sim card plans!

There is no such thing as the best prepaid sim card in Canada in 2024 as every provider has the exact same prices for the exact same prepaid sim card plans. All valid for 30 days and none of the mobile internet operators allow prepaid users to use the 5G network in Canada, max speed on a Canada prepaid sim card is 4G/LTE.

Ok, Telus and Rogers have slightly better 4G/5G mobile data network coverage than Bell, so that would be a reason to call Telus or Rogers the best prepaid sim card in Canada in 2024. But is also depends where in Canada you are traveling.

I started this article already by informing you that sim cards for Canada that you buy on the internet are actually much more affordable and therefore Traveltomtom recommends ordering a sim card for traveling to Canada online before your trip. The easiest way is to order an e-sim card.

Traveltomtom recommends ordering an e-sim card for Canada via SimOptions , Airalo or Nomad .

Why? Because e-sim cards are simply cheaper! An e-sim card for Canada with 5 GB data for 30 days = $18 USD or what about 10 GB data for 30 days = $24.90 USD.

Also  Airalo offers e-sim cards for Canada that are 5G ready. Another reason to order your sim card for Canada on the internet.

For more info about Canada e-sim cards check out my guide with everything you need to know before ordering an e-sim card for Canada in 2024 .

North America sim cards

As you have read in this article there is FREE ROAMING in all of Mexico, Canada and the USA. Regardless where you buy your sim card. When buying a sim card in the USA you get free roaming in Canada and Mexico. Buying a sim card in Mexico you get free roaming in Canada and the USA. There are basically no borders for these 3 countries when it comes data roaming.

Therefore you might want to buy a USA sim card for your trip to Canada, or even a Mexican sim card . But, there are a lot of limitations when it comes to the data speed. Always read the Fair Use Policy very carefully. Because on Mexico prepaid sim cards there is often a FUP of 10 GB data in USA and Canada. Which means after you used 10 GB data the data speed is reduced to 256 Kbps, which is barely enough for sending an email.

I hope all the above information for buying a Canada sim card was helpful for your upcoming trip. In case you are heading to Halifax , Montreal , Jasper , Edmonton , Niagara Falls click on the link for my travel guides. Or see all my Canada travel blogs in this link.

India E-Visa Fees and Costs in 2024

What is the indian e-visa system .

The Indian e-Visa system is an online travel authorization that permits travel to India for tourism, business, or medical purposes. This system is designed to streamline the visa process, eliminating the need for embassy visits or physical application submissions.

In 2024, the India e-Visa is available to citizens of over 165 countries, making it widely accessible to travelers worldwide.

There are three types of e-Visas:

  • e-Tourist Visa
  • e-Business Visa
  • e-Medical Visa

Each has its specific costs associated with it, which we will elaborate on below.

Breakdown of Indian E-Visa Fees in 2024

The cost of an Indian e-Visa varies depending on several factors, including the type of e-Visa, the duration of the e-Visa, and the nationality of the applicant.

E-Tourist Visa Costs

E-business visa costs, how much are service charges and processing fees .

In addition to the visa fees, there are also service charges and processing fees to consider. A bank transaction fee of 2.5% is added to the visa fee.

This fee covers the processing of the payment and is non-refundable, even if the visa application is rejected.

India E-Visa Additional Fees in 2024

While the visa fee is the primary cost, there may be other additional expenses to consider:

  • Travel Health Insurance : It’s advisable to secure comprehensive travel health insurance that will cover any potential medical expenses during your stay in India. The cost of insurance varies greatly based on coverage level and duration, but generally, you can expect to pay between $40 and $100 for one-month coverage.
  • Transportation Costs : Depending on your proximity to the airport and your planned travel within India, transportation costs can add up. Rough estimates can range from $50 to $200.
  • Accommodation and Daily Expenses : India offers a broad range of accommodation options for every budget. A budget traveler might spend as little as $20 per day, while luxury travelers might spend $150 per day or more.
  • Passport Photos: Passport photos may be required during the application process. The price for these typically ranges from $10 to $15 for a set of two photos if taken professionally. Many people now use online services or smartphone apps to take and print passport photos, which can reduce the cost considerably.

India E-Visa Visa Extension and Overstay Charges

In exceptional circumstances, tourist visas can be extended. The extension fee for an Indian e-Tourist visa usually matches the original visa fee.

As of 2024, for most countries, this means an extension fee of $100 for an e-Tourist visa.

Overstaying your e-Visa can lead to fines of $30 per day of overstaying.

India E-Visa Emergency / Urgent Processing Fees

While the standard processing time for the Indian e-Visa is typically 3-5 business days, there may be situations where you require an expedited visa. In these cases, an additional fee for urgent processing is applied on top of the standard visa fee.

The exact cost for emergency processing can fluctuate depending on the urgency, but generally, the additional fee is $79 and will be processed in 1-3 business days. Always plan ahead to avoid needing this service, as it significantly increases the total cost of your visa.

What Is The India E-Visa Refund and Cancellation Policy ?

It’s essential to note that the Indian e-Visa fee is non-refundable.

This policy applies even if your visa application is unsuccessful, if you choose to withdraw your application, or if you’re granted a visa for a shorter period than you applied for.

What Forms of Payment Are Accepted for the e-Visa Fee?

When applying for an India e-Visa in 2024, understanding the acceptable payment methods for the visa fee is important for a smooth application process. Here’s what applicants need to know:

  • Online Payment Methods : The fee for an India e-Visa is typically paid online, as part of the application process. The most common forms of online payment accepted include credit cards, debit cards, and sometimes, payment wallets.
  • Credit and Debit Cards : Major international credit and debit cards are usually accepted. This often includes Visa, MasterCard, and American Express, among others.
  • Secure Payment Gateway : The payment is made through a secure payment gateway on the e-Visa application portal. Applicants should ensure they are using a secure and reliable internet connection for the transaction.
  • Currency Conversion : The fee is usually listed in U.S. dollars, but the payment system will automatically convert it into your card’s currency at the prevailing exchange rate.
  • Receipt and Confirmation : Upon successful payment, applicants receive a confirmation, often via email. It’s important to keep this confirmation as proof of payment.

Updated travel information for Mexican citizens coming to Canada

From: Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada

News release

Canada and Mexico have maintained a deep, positive and constructive diplomatic partnership over the past 80 years. We have worked to ensure North America is the world’s most competitive economic region and maintain strong bilateral, regional and multilateral cooperation. To support travel and people-to-people connections between Canada and Mexico, while also preserving the integrity of our immigration system, the Government of Canada is adjusting its travel requirements for Mexican citizens.

February 29, 2024, 8:30 a.m. – Ottawa – Canada and Mexico have maintained a deep, positive and constructive diplomatic partnership over the past 80 years.

As of February 29, 2024, at 11:30 p.m. Eastern time, Mexican citizens who hold a valid US non-immigrant visa or have held a Canadian visa in the past 10 years and are travelling by air on a Mexican passport will be able to apply for an electronic travel authorization (eTA). With the high number of Mexican citizens currently holding US visas, the majority will continue to enjoy visa-free travel to Canada. Those who do not meet these conditions will need to apply for a Canadian visitor visa. This responds to an increase in asylum claims made by Mexican citizens that are refused, withdrawn or abandoned. It is an important step to preserve mobility for hundreds of thousands of Mexican citizens, while also ensuring the sound management of our immigration and asylum systems.

The application process for Mexican citizens seeking a work or study permit will not change. Mexican citizens who want to work in Canada will continue to have access to a wide number of existing labour pathways, including the Temporary Foreign Worker Program and the International Mobility Program.

Canada supports ongoing travel, tourism and business with Mexico. We will continue to work with the Government of Mexico to strengthen our regular pathways to immigration, and with our provincial and territorial counterparts to support a system of managed migration as well as to support those in need of protection. Canada is expanding its network of visa application centres in Mexico to better serve these clients. Today’s action will relieve pressure on Canada’s borders, immigration system, housing and social services, while preserving mobility for Mexican citizens who want to come to Canada.

The Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program (SAWP) is a vital example of the mutually beneficial migration that we seek to promote regionally and globally. Canada is ready to work with Mexico to build on this program, through the modernization of a new SAWP bilateral agreement, to offer Mexican workers new opportunities, through the incorporation of year-round primary agriculture and seasonal fish, seafood and primary food processing into the program. This will benefit workers and businesses on both sides of the Canada–Mexico relationship.

Canada is continuously monitoring the impacts of its visa policies for both visa-exempt and visa-required countries, as well as asylum claim trends. These challenges are not limited to one country. Any adjustment to Canada’s travel requirements are made to preserve the integrity and sustainability of our asylum and immigration systems.

More information about these changes, including for people in transit or with upcoming flights, is available on IRCC’s website .

“Mexico is an important partner to Canada. We will continue to welcome Mexican temporary workers, students, visitors and immigrants who bring diverse skills and important contributions to our economy and communities. We strive for balance between the movement of people between our two great countries, and the need to relieve pressure on our immigration system so we can provide protection to those who need it the most.” – The Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship

Quick facts

Asylum claims made by Mexican citizens reached a record high in 2023 at a time when Canada’s asylum system, housing and social services were already under significant pressure. The majority of these claims (approximately 60%) were either rejected by the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada, or withdrawn or abandoned by the applicant.

In 2023 alone, asylum claims from Mexican citizens accounted for 17% of all claims made that year from all nationalities around the world. The country’s asylum claim rate has risen significantly since the visa was first lifted in 2016 (from 260 claims in 2016 to 23,995 claims in 2023).

All eTAs issued to Mexican passports before 11:30 p.m. Eastern time on February 29, 2024, will no longer be valid—except for eTAs linked to Mexican passports with a valid Canadian work or study permit. Mexican citizens travelling to Canada without a valid work or study permit will need to apply for a visitor visa or reapply for a new eTA —if they are eligible.

Mexican citizens holding a valid work or study permit can still travel by air to Canada with their existing eTA as long as it remains valid, and they can continue to study or work in Canada based on the validity and conditions of their permit. Mexican visitors who are already in Canada on an eTA can stay for as long as they are authorized (up to six months from the date they arrive in Canada). However, if they plan to leave Canada and wish to return, they must have the proper travel documents (visa or new eTA).

Most approved visa applicants receive multiple-entry visas, which allow them to visit Canada as many times as they want, for up to 10 years, or until their passport expires.

The eTA is a digital travel document that most visa-exempt travellers need in order to travel to or transit through Canada by air. IRCC first began expanding its eTA program to eligible citizens from visa-required countries in 2017. Mexico will now be among 15 countries whose citizens can to fly to Canada on an eTA, instead of a visa, if they meet certain requirements .

Canada's decision to reinstate visa requirement 'disappointing' for London's Mexican community

Ottawa made the move under pressure from washington and quebec city.

When Andrea Ávila learned Thursday the Canadian government was bringing back a visa requirement for many Mexican visitors to Canada, it brought back memories. None of them good.

  • Canada bringing back visa requirements for Mexican nationals to curb asylum seekers

"It's frustrating. It's uncomfortable," she said. "It makes you feel like you're not wanted in a place and that you cannot bring your loved ones here, but we have to understand that this is politics."

Born in Mexico City, Ávila has lived in Canada for 15 years. She's a graduate of Western University and a published author.

The visa requirement, announced Thursday by immigration minister Marc Miller, will mean that many travellers from Mexico will require a visa to enter Canada.

Mexican citizens flying to Canada will be able to apply for an electronic travel authorization if they have held a Canadian visa within the last decade or if they have a valid U.S. visa. The change won't affect work and student visas, but otherwise, Mexicans coming to Canada will need an entry visa.

Miller said Canada is bringing in the visa requirements due to a spike in asylum claims in recent years from Mexico, most of which have either been rejected or withdrawn.

The Quebec government has been pressuring Ottawa to do something to curb asylum requests in that province. There was also pressure from the United States — because without an entry visa requirement for Canada, some Mexicans were flying here then crossing into the U.S. illegally.

Ávila has seen this happen before: Political pressure resulting in restrictions on Mexicans' ability to travel.

The Conservative government of Prime Minister Stephen Harper imposed a visa requirement on Mexico in 2009 to stem the flow of asylum claims.

Back then, some of Ávila's relatives were planning to travel to Canada to visit her. She said the visa requirements, then as they are now, cost her family time and money. Many of those travel restrictions were lifted by the Trudeau government in 2016.

"It's difficult ot hear that Canada is not doing more to keep the relationship with Mexico in better stand," said Ávila.

Move complicates mother's visit

Arturo Martinez is worried the new entry visa requirement will complicate plans to bring his mother to London, Ont., from Mexico City this summer.

The move has also frustrated Arturo Martinez.

He's lived in Canada for 25 years and owns the Mayasol Spanish language school on Wellington Street in London.

"I was planning to see my Mom this summer, but now with this process, it's going to be a little more difficult," he said. "It's going to cost time and money. It's very disappointing."

Martinez worries the new rules will do little to curb illegal entries and false asylum claims. Meanwhile, Mexicans who live outside of Mexico City may have to travel there to process their visa applications.

"In this economy, it's more money for them," said Martinez.

Psychology professor Victoria M. Esses studies immigration at Western University. She's also a principal investigator on the Pathways to Prosperity Partnership, a national network that conducts research on immigration.

Esses said the move to reinstate entry visas didn't surprise her.

"A new visa program is one way of making Canadians feel that we do have control of who is coming in and that the process is a systematic process for asylum applicants," she said.

Esses said a key to the changes working well will be Mexico setting up enough visa offices to process the applications.

"If the process of obtaining a visa is relatively straightforward, I would say that it won't have a negative impact, but that's still to come."

The new rules won't amount to a complete return to the pre-2016 rules.

The new visas will be valid for a ten-year period and will allow a traveller to enter Canada multiple times and stay for up to six months at a time. Customs officers will have discretionary power to limit the duration of the visa or the number of visits, one source said.
