This Hotel Has Mexico City’s Only Suite With An Outdoor Infinity Pool By Forbes Travel Guide Editor Jennifer Kester

This Hotel Has Mexico City’s Only Suite With An Outdoor Infinity Pool

Towering above the iconic “Diana the Huntress” fountain on Mexico City ‘s bustling Paseo de la Reforma, the 31-story The St. Regis Mexico City is a dramatic landmark in the heart of the metropolis.

Designed by Cesar Pelli (the renowned Argentine-American architect behind iconic buildings like the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur, the Carnegie Hall Tower in New York and The National Museum of Art in Osaka), the Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star Hotel has become as much an institution as the bronze-goddess-sculpture-topped fountain it overlooks. As the property marks its 15th anniversary, we take a closer look at what makes it stand out:

Distinctive Service

The Colonia Cuauhtémoc hotel upholds the brand’s century-old tradition of assigning a dedicated butler to every room or suite. These attentive staff members unpack luggage, press clothing and bring you piping-hot coffee or tea whenever you need a jolt.

Ask for the aromatherapy turndown, and he’ll come with a diffuser and several siesta-inducing scents, like chamomile tea and eucalyptus mint. The butler will make your room a sanctuary of rest in no time.

Another St. Regis hallmark is the daily champagne sabering ritual in the lobby, a nod to Napoleon Bonaparte’s practice of forcing the tops off bottles with his own saber. “Champagne: in victory, one deserves it; in defeat, one needs it,” the famed French ruler said. But at The St. Regis Mexico City, everyone wins with a glass of bubbly. The ritual offers a warm way to welcome guests.

Exclusive Experiences

For more great service, consult the Les Clefs d’Or concierges, recognizable by the golden key pins on their lapels. Les Clefs d’Or is an international association of hotel concierges that requires comprehensive testing for membership.

The concierges’ expertise shows — the St. Regis’ team has curated unforgettable excursions. While tourists crowd Frida Kahlo’s iconic Casa Azul, you can take a private tour of Casa Ortega, a lesser-known but no less significant creation of Luis Barragán, Mexico’s celebrated architect.

Only available by appointment, Casa Ortega often gets overshadowed by the adjacent Luis Barragán House and Studio (now a museum, it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site), but it was the first home the Pritzker Prize-winning architect created and inhabited.

A passionate architecture expert will lead you through Casa Ortega, which is preserved in its original condition with a large collection of furniture from Clara Porset, a trailblazing Cuban designer and a longtime Barragán collaborator. You will get a rich sense of Barragán’s signature use of saturated colors, geometric shapes and surprising design elements.

The unexpected twists happen when you first enter the nondescript door into a bubblegum-pink hallway. Elsewhere in the house, an oversized wooden door in the brick-walled living room opens to reveal a verdant, expansive garden with vivid purple bougainvillea. The influence of Spain’s Alhambra and Generalife on Barragán’s design is evident, and these gardens were the very reason he purchased the property.

Explore the grounds for more surprises: A sunken loggia almost disappears beneath an awning, and a cantilevered outdoor stairway atop the building seems to ascend to the heavens.

Culinary Options and Artisanal Spirits

You have diverse gastronomic choices at The St. Regis Mexico City. The hotel boasts Mexico’s first La Table Krug, an intimate burgundy-hued space that serves multicourse French menus paired with champagne at a table for 12.

But it’s not the only establishment at the property to specialize in pairings. Diana Restaurant, named for the bronze huntress beyond its oversized windows, matches vibrant wines with its Mexican food: El Jardín de Lucía albariño arrives with the divine avocado pizza, a longtime menu fixture with coriander, onion and jalapeños on a cracker-like crust. A 2018 Casa Madero Gran Reserva shiraz accompanies your tender beef fillet with jus poured tableside.

Next to Diana, the King Cole Bar stakes a claim for the city’s best bloody marys. The cocktail debuted as the Red Snapper at The St. Regis New York’s bar in 1934. Try the original or the Mexico City hotel’s local spin, Sangrita Maria, with mezcal, chile pasilla, black pepper, salt, sauce mix, lemon and tomato juices and a rim of worm salt. Or tell the barkeep you are looking for something different, and he might bring out digestifs like Yolixpa Teepak, a pre-Hispanic spirit from Puebla that’s sweet and herbal like chartreuse, or D’Aristi Xtabentún, an anise liqueur from the Yucatan. Whichever you choose, pair it with the tacos al pastor , placed around a mini-spit of pork for an eminently Instagrammable and satisfying lunch.

For other meals, bakery/bistro Glass House Café offers plant-based options. Mentor transports you to Greece with its stone flooring, archways and menu. Or leave your meal to the chef with Sushi Tatsugoro’s omakase menu.

The Spa in the Sky

When you need to decompress, zip up to the 15th floor to the two-story Remède Spa. Get an up-close look at the tall buildings surrounding you from the floor-to-ceiling windows in the locker room, the fitness center (outfitted with Technogym and Kinesis equipment) or the heated indoor pool, but you’ll quickly forget about the city outside when it’s time to settle in for a massage (like the deep tissue using bamboo or the indulgent four-handed service) or a HydraFacial. Couples can unwind in the private Sol y Luna, a spa suite with its own steam room and shower.

Verdant Retreats

Seek out the tucked-away hidden green oasis on the third floor. The alfresco Bloom Garden debuted during the pandemic, offering guests solace and fresh air. The amenity has remained as a popular site for weddings, proposals and celebrities wanting discretion. You’ll notice scents of rosemary while seated under the pergolas, where you’ll want to linger amid the lavender and other greenery.

For a personal oasis, book one of the new Garden Terrace Suites, which feature private terraces with lush greenery that overlooks Paseo de la Reforma. The grandest is the Caroline Astor Garden Terrace Suite, the first in Mexico City to have its own outdoor infinity pool.

While the new suites surround you in nature, they also immerse you in Mexican artistry. The terraces draw inspiration from native botanicals with décor curated by Casa Martina of San Miguel de Allende. Inside, you’ll discover paintings from artists like Vicente Rojo and Joy Laville. The new suites help continue to cement The St. Regis Mexico City as an institution.

Hong Kong’s Hidden Travel Gems By Correspondent Kate Springer

Hong Kong’s Hidden Travel Gems

A dynamic destination like Hong Kong always has something new to discover. Even if you’ve visited a dozen times, the city will surprise you with its rich cultural experiences, hidden bars and stunning natural scenery.

If you’ve already explored the usual sights and activities — or simply want to see another side of things — dig deeper on your next visit with seven of Hong Kong’s best-kept secrets.

Plan a one-of-a-kind dinner date

In Central, dine like culinary royalty at Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star The Krug Room , hidden inside the Five-Star Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong . It’s the only one outside France, and you’ll need help finding it.

A few minutes before your reservation begins, meet your server at The Chinnery then follow him through a swinging door and down a hallway lined with candles. Turn a corner, and an elegantly designed space that feels like an Old World train carriage appears out of nowhere. Offering a view of the buzzing hotel kitchen, the white marble table has just 12 seats. Book a few spots or the whole room to enjoy 10 to 14 artistic courses by executive chef Robin Zavou paired with Krug champagnes. Each multi-sensory course arrives with dramatic presentations and storytelling to delight your taste buds and spark your imagination.

If you can’t snag a dinner reservation, check out the Krug-tasting sessions on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, with delicious snacks from Zavou.

Travel back in time to Lai Chi Wo

Originally home to a community of Hakka people, an ethnic group that migrated from northern China, this 350-year-old walled village is one of the oldest and largest settlements in Hong Kong. Inside Lai Chi Wo , you’ll find more than 200 well-preserved houses, temples and ancestral halls, some of which have been remodeled into shops and cafés.

After admiring the architecture, follow the short Lai Chi Wo Nature Trail to explore the surrounding “fung shui” woods, farmlands and coastal mangrove forests. Fair warning: It’s a trek. The village is accessible via a scenic 10-mile hike or a 1.5-hour ferry service (from Ma Liu Shui Public Pier, about 30 minutes from Central), so plan your day trip in advance.

Weave in some textile history

If you’re a culture maven, you’ll undoubtedly have hot spots like Tai Kwun , PMQ and the West Kowloon Cultural District — home to M+ and the Hong Kong Palace Museum — on your radar. But if you’re keen to venture off the beaten path, head over to The Mills in Tsuen Wan, about 30 minutes on the MTR from Central. At this destination for heritage and innovation, industry giant Nan Fung Textiles Limited transformed its former cotton-spinning mills into a creative revitalization complex devoted to Hong Kong’s fashion and textile industry.

In addition to exploring fascinating relics, seasonal exhibitions, beautiful murals and architectural details at the textile heritage museum dubbed CHAT ( Centre for Heritage, Arts and Textile ), you can partake in hands-on workshops and tours. Afterward, enjoy a meal at one of the artisanal restaurants or shop for eco-conscious lifestyle products and indie fashion on The Mills Shopfloor. One of the boutiques, Fabrica X , features creations from The Mills Fabrica, an accelerator for sustainable fashion technology and agri-food startups.

Take home a piece of porcelain

For Hong Kong souvenirs that you’ll treasure forever, find your way to Yuet Tung China Works. Concealed in a commercial building in Kowloon Bay, this treasure trove of hand-painted ceramics overflows with racks of high-quality porcelain, from decorative tableware to vases, lamp bases and even children’s cups and bowls.

Specializing in guang cai (a style of overglaze decoration dating to the Qing Dynasty), the family-run company was established nearly 100 years ago in 1928 and is one of the last of its kind in Hong Kong. Amid the store’s narrow aisles and jam-packed shelves, you’ll likely see an artist at work, hand-painting tiny flowers and animals onto delicate pieces.

Catch a delicious pop-up

Looking for a low-key night out? Don’t miss a chance to experience a pop-up dinner at Test Kitchen . Located in a cool, loft-style warehouse in Sai Ying Pun, a vibrant neighborhood west of Central, this experimental space invites chefs worldwide to showcase their limited-time menus.

Past experiences have included everything from a Danish pastry journey and Balinese feast to a farm-to-table menu by influential Hong Kong chef Devon Hou , who has worked at Five-Star establishments such as Amber and the Mandarin Grill + Bar .

forbes travel guide plaque

Track down killer cocktails

Whether tucked away in nondescript commercial buildings or hidden behind playful facades, Hong Kong bars are fun to find. The city’s first speakeasy-style lounge, 001 , recently moved from its original location amid the bustling market stalls on Graham Street to an even harder-to-find spot in Tai Kwun. Wander deep into a converted prison and navigate a maze of hallways, stairwells and seemingly identical black prison doors until you spot a discreet vintage doorbell — your ticket inside. Once you’re in, sip on a signature Earl Grey Martini, reminiscent of a gin sour, at this jazzy, jewel-toned cocktail bar.  While the night’s still young, slink over to Five-Star The Landmark Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong . Head up the stairs and step inside the vintage phone booth at the back of MO Bar . Push any button to enter PDT (Please Don’t Tell) — a collaboration with the famed New York cocktail bar. With just 25 seats, the intimate, wood-clad space feels a world away from the busy streets of Central.

Savor a Benton’s Old Fashion, a locally inspired gourmet hot dog (like the Typhoon Shelter Dog) and “Cheung Fun” tater tots to get the full experience. Alternatively, you can join one of the Sunday School cocktail masterclasses for a spirited day out.

Make a secret splash

If you love a great hike with sea views, plan a day trip to the Ap Lei Pai tide pool to see another side of Hong Kong. Take the MTR down to the South Side, near Aberdeen, and hop off at Lei Tung station (Exit B) on Ap Lei Chau island. Walk south on Lei Tung Estate Road until you see a McDonald’s on the left. Straight ahead, two yellow booths mark the start of the hidden trailhead. From there, follow the short but challenging 2.2-mile coastal loop. Steep concrete steps will take you up the hill, past a playground and onto a dirt trail over Mount Johnston, then across a narrow sandbar onto Ap Lei Pai island.

You’ll spot the white Mount Johnson Lighthouse at the island’s southern tip. Continue around the coastline, and you’ll find the tide pool about 350 feet to the right. Clamber down the rocks into the pool, soak up the serene atmosphere, then hire a local sampan boat or hike back to Aberdeen. There’s little shade on this hike, so we’d recommend going on an overcast day or early in the morning. Be sure to pack lots of water, gloves, shoes with good grip and sun protection.

This Hideaway Dubai Boutique Hotel Offers Courtyards, Private Happy Hours and Tranquility By Forbes Travel Guide Editor Jennifer Kester

This Hideaway Dubai Boutique Hotel Offers Courtyards, Private Happy Hours and Tranquility

Nestled in Dubai ’s almost 100-acre Madinat Jumeirah, an area reminiscent of a small Arabian village, Jumeirah Dar Al Masyaf offers a serene haven amid its more imposing sister resorts, including Jumeirah Mina A’Salam , Jumeirah Al Naseem and Jumeirah Al Qasr .

As it marks its 20th anniversary, Jumeirah Dar Al Masyaf stands out for its intimate setting, which includes recently renovated summerhouses and villas. In each summerhouse — aptly named Dar Al Masyaf means “summer house” and was inspired by the traditional Arabian structures — eight to 10 guest rooms and a one-bedroom suite encircle a spacious, tranquil central courtyard. This vibrant Moroccan-style space captivates with colorful tiles, vivid bursts of terra cotta, the trickling sounds of a water feature and pops of greenery. The inviting, secluded courtyard coaxes you to unwind with sofas, daybeds and chairs.

forbes travel guide plaque

The 29 two-story summerhouses all have a majlis , or sitting room, on their ground floor. In the United Arab Emirates and elsewhere in the Middle East, a majlis is a cultural cornerstone where community and conversation take center stage. Here, the guests of each summerhouse can gather at the nightly sunset happy hour to chat over complimentary wine, cocktails or soft drinks and snacks (bowls of potato chips and mixed nuts were on offer during our visit). Sit in the U-shaped banquettes lining the airy room or retreat to the expansive courtyard just outside.

The accommodations have been refreshed with a timeless palette of white and cream and touches of powder blue and navy while preserving distinctive architectural elements that evoke a sense of place: scalloped doorways, arabesque patterns and stately wood doors. Make time for a soak in the bathrooms’ enticing freestanding tubs.

forbes travel guide plaque

Though the summerhouses focus inward on the courtyard and majlis, Dubai’s longest private beach (it measures more than a mile) is mere steps away, and many rooms have balconies with views of the gulf, gardens or the navigable waterways that cut through the property.

The most exclusive accommodations at Jumeirah Dar Al Masyaf are the Malakiya Villas. After a year-long revitalization, the collection of seven villas is available for those who need a getaway with discretion and privacy (it’s a favorite among celebrities). After a chauffeur picks you up at the airport (villa guests receive this perk along with an airport drop-off) and brings you to the property, you will board an electric abra , a traditional Emirati wooden boat, for a quick but scenic ride to your villa for a private check-in.

forbes travel guide plaque

Designed by Dubai-based Sahar Alyaseer of La Bottega, the contemporary-styled villas have a light and soothing ambiance with neutral tones and accents of subdued shades of sage and blue. The villas feel like luxurious homes, with two or three bedrooms, a private plunge pool, a sprawling terrace and a kitchen. You’ll also get thoughtful in-room comforts: At the end of the day, sip complimentary sundowners from the curved sofa in your villa.

Whether you stay in the villas or the summerhouses, you will receive stellar amenities. A butler is at the ready 24 hours a day via WhatsApp to help with everything from ensuring your Arabian coffee is fresh and to your liking to quickly booking your dining experiences at one of the more than 50 onsite restaurants or your spa appointment at the Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star Talise Spa Madinat Jumeirah . The attentive butler might add numerous surprise treats, which provide delightful touches to your stay.

forbes travel guide plaque

In addition, you get complimentary access to Wild Wadi Waterpark (a hit with kids) and Madinat Jumeirah’s private pools, including the adults-only Celeste infinity pool, which sits on the sand with stunning ocean views.

Perched at the edge of the property, your stay at this hideaway boutique hotel provides a picturesque and tranquil contrast to the bustling energy of Dubai.

Amorous Activities

Escape for a lovely late afternoon to the city’s Distillery District. This cobblestoned pedestrian space is picturesque to a fault, making it one of the most sought-after places in town for couples or wedding photography. For those looking to explore the area, the 19th-century warehouses are chock-full of art galleries, outdoor sculptures and boutiques. Head to SOMA Chocolatemaker for a taste of small-batch, artisanal treats; peruse the eccentric shoe offerings at John Fluevog ; have a sake tasting at IZUMI Brewery ; or stock up on exquisite stationery and pens at the Toronto Pen Shoppe and write your sweetheart a heartfelt love letter.

If you’re looking to mark a special occasion with a stunning backdrop, skip the CN Tower and hop on a short 15-minute ferry ride to explore the Toronto Islands, where you can enjoy a canoe ride or tandem bike with a view of the city’s famous skyline.

Other date-night options include trekking over to the Art Gallery of Ontario to stroll the picturesque Galleria Italian promenade, going the classically romantic route with an evening watching the National Ballet of Canada (see Don Quixote June 1 through 9) or catching a Toronto Blue Jays baseball game at the Rogers Centre. To this day, we dream of finding a partner who looks at us the same way Vladimir Guerrero Jr. stares at a weak fastball down the middle.

Go On A One-Day Gorilla Trek In Rwanda By Isabelle Counsell

April 3, 2024

Go On A One-Day Gorilla Trek In Rwanda

When I told friends I was heading to Rwanda, I was surprised by their reaction. “So, you’re going to fist-bump gorillas?” they asked. Their response turned out to be rather accurate.

The central African country has made remarkable changes following its brutal 1994 genocide, in part due to the tourists eager to see the famed mountain gorillas within fist-bumping distance.

Rwanda’s mountain gorillas, made famous by primatologist Dian Fossey, live primarily in the north of the country within Volcanoes National Park. About 10 habituated gorilla families who call the park home are carefully protected; only 80 trekking permits (issued solely by the government or licensed tour operators at $1,500 a person) are available each day, making them highly coveted.

The planning for the one-day gorilla trek can feel chaotic, and you know little (Which family will I visit? What will the hike be like?) in advance. I arrived at the park headquarters at 7 a.m. along with the day’s other permit holders (you must be a minimum of 15 years old). We milled about, adjusting our gaiters and exchanging countries of origin while the eight guides divided us up (likely by presumed fitness level) and assigned the newly formed groups to gorilla families. With the gorillas spread across the 62-square-mile park, treks to reach them vary in difficulty, from a brisk 30 minutes to a daunting four hours.

forbes travel guide plaque

My group of 10 trekkers — a mix of French, American, Dutch, German and South African tourists all roughly in their 30s — was deemed fit enough to visit the Igisha family of gorillas high up in the mountainous jungle. This necessitated an hour’s drive from park headquarters to a trailhead, where we each handed off our backpacks to porters (portering is the country’s answer to fighting poaching — the $20 tip from each trekker is enough to keep the practice at bay). After our guide provided a quick overview of the plan and handed out trekking poles, we began the upward climb to meet the 34 members of the Igisha family.

The trek was hard, like reconsidering-my-desire-to-see-gorillas hard. I received many a sympathetic look from the seasoned porters as I huffed up the mountain, forcefully planting my trekking poles, hoping they would help pull me up the steep incline. After two hours of brutal ascent, we finally reached our goal: the trackers who went out at dawn to find the Igisha family linked up with us and said the gorillas were nearby. We were instructed to mask up and follow the machete-wielding trackers off-piste into the thick jungle, crashing over brush and through stinging nettles.

Mere moments after I questioned whether the trek was worth it, I was face-to-face with a mother mountain gorilla gently breastfeeding her baby. It was breathtaking. For an hour, we watched various Igisha family members, from babies to silverbacks, as they napped, snacked and, in one tense moment, charged at us (the guide’s clipped instruction of “Do not run” as the silverback hurtled toward us was hard to obey).

The time went by quickly as we observed the gorillas in their natural environment, snapping picture after picture in quiet awe. Nothing prepared me for the simple yet intense encounter.

The hike back down — a much more manageable 30 minutes — was conducted in silence as the group contemplated the trek, coming to the same unspoken conclusion: this was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Where to Stay One&Only Gorilla’s Nest was a wonderful base to launch my Volcanoes National Park trek. Although the staff cannot book your permit directly, it goes above and beyond when it comes to preparing you for the adventure — expect a robust packed lunch; complimentary gaiters, backpacks and hats; and a bottle of champagne waiting for you upon your return. A bonus: after the trek, the staff rounds up your muddied clothes and shoes for a quick cleaning, so you don’t have to worry about stowing the dirty items in your luggage.

Genesis London first auto retailer to receive In Partnership with Forbes Travel Guide recognition

  • Industry News

Hass Hijazi, General Managing Partner with Genesis London proudly displays the first-ever “In Partnership with Forbes Travel Guide” plaque awarded to a retailer in the automotive industry.

Hass Hijazi, General Managing Partner with Genesis London, is used to being first.

At a special ceremony Thursday in London, Ont., Hijazi became the leader of the first automotive retailer in the world to be formally honoured as meeting the rigorous standards to be recognized as being “In Partnership with Forbes Travel Guide.”

Representatives from Genesis London, Genesis Motors Canada, Canadian auto dealer and others gathered for a special presentation where Hijazi was presented with a special plaque honouring the achievement.

In his remarks, Eric Marshall, Director, Genesis Canada, went through a series of firsts for Hijazi, including being the first distributor in the Genesis network to open a Genesis Retail Experience Center. “I wanted to take this opportunity to say congratulations for being the first, being a trailblazer, and really being a true leader within the Genesis network,” said Marshall.

“Genesis London is now the first to be in partnership with Forbes Travel Guide, which is again, a huge accomplishment on its own. It shows the sheer commitment required by your team to put in the right processes,” said Marshall, adding in an interview with Canadian auto dealer that the distinction not only recognizes the luxury amenities of the facility, but also the processes throughout the sales and ownership experiences that create an elevated guest experience.

During his remarks, Hijazi said from his earliest days in the car business, he was driven to be first in everything he did. “It was easy to see that being first gives you a competitive edge. If you step out and are the first to do something, whether you succeed or fail, you win either way. That was the attitude ingrained in me by the Finch family and by my partner Ryan Finch,” he said.

The “In Partnership with Forbes Travel Guide” is an automotive industry first, and builds on the reputation of Forbes Travel Guide as the global authority on luxury hospitality. The “In Partnership with Forbes Travel Guide” recognition is similar to how leading hotels, resorts and spas around the world earn their recognition for excellence in hospitality.

To achieve the recognition, Genesis London team members had to go through extensive training and coaching to learn more about luxury hospitality practices and then be assessed on how effectively they implemented these luxury standards for their guests.

Before formally presenting the plaque to Hijazi, Alexandra Miziolek, Manager, Training & Operational Excellence, Genesis Motors Canada, explained the significance of the achievement. “What a historic day for Genesis London,” she said. “For the Genesis London team it represents your commitment and your dedication to delivering an exceptional guest experience. I think it gives our guests confidence that they’re doing business with an exceptional company.”

Miziolek praised the importance of Genesis Motors Canada’s partnership with Forbes Travel Guide and Clarify Group (who helped launch and administer the program for Genesis Canada). “It’s an impactful partnership and relationship and we truly are making a difference,” she said.

Darren Slind, Co-Founder and Managing Director of Clarify Group, a Markham, Ont.-based research and consultancy firm, was on hand for the special ceremony. “We looked at all of the touch points in the guest journey,” said Slind. “What’s impressive is the consistency with which the Genesis London team delivers that elevated experience to their guests.”

Slind said Genesis London was not only the first retailer in Canada, or North America to be recognized with the honour, they were “the first automotive retailer on earth” to have done so.

During his remarks, Hijazi admitted that before embarking on the journey to elevate their guest experience, he was a bit skeptical. “We thought we were already doing a great job with luxury. When Genesis approached us and said we’ve entered into an agreement with Clarify to make us better, I thought ‘how much better can we be? We’re already number one in guest experience,’” he said. “Wow, my eyes were opened. The curriculum they put together with Genesis was outstanding. There were things we didn’t even think about,” he said.

Hijazi said he was humbled by the recognition but deflected the praise to his team, notably Darlene Vallas, Operations Manager, who he said did an outstanding job serving their guests and maintaining the facility to the highest standards. “I’m super proud to be accepting this award on behalf of everyone in this room and the team,” he said.

After the ceremony, Genesis London team members posed for pictures with the Forbes Travel Guide plaque that can now be displayed within the distributorship as a symbol to guests that they can expect a luxury experience.

In an interview with Canadian auto dealer after the ceremony, Hijazi said that after his team went through the training on true luxury experiences, they started to notice all the little details it takes to deliver a great experience. “We now get comments from customers that they notice the little things. They talk about how great the cappuccino was, or that it was nice to go into the washroom and have mouthwash available. We hoped they would notice all these little things and they do, and they are telling their friends,” said Hijazi.

In an interview, Eric Marshall said the foundations for a great guest experience have always been part of the Genesis DNA, starting from a great omnichannel and online experience, and carrying throughout. “This amazing partnership with Forbes Travel Guide is taking this guest experience to the next level,” he said.

“What we’ve done now is we’ve aligned ourselves a lot closer from a facility standpoint, but also from a hospitality standpoint to what you would come to expect out of a five star hotel or a five star spa, as far as an experience goes. So this is the future for the brand and we’re pleased that Genesis London is the first to be able to enter into a partnership with Forbes Travel Guide.”

As other distributorships across the Genesis network achieve the standard, they too will be recognized with a plaque they can display in their facilities.

In an interview with Canadian auto dealer , Alexandra Miziolek, said that for many OEMs the focus on the guest experience is on the sales experience, and how well they are doing with their guests during the transaction. For Genesis retailers, they focus holistically on the entire guest experience, and now they have added in more of a focus on a luxury experience. “It solidifies our commitment as a brand to the guest experience. It’s one of our pillars,” she said.

Miziolek said that even when they hold training events, they consider the small touches and the experiences they are providing, to help their network truly appreciate the luxury experience and the attention to detail required to deliver it. “I’d like to think that our training is not only practical, and focused on the guest experience, but experiential as well,” she said.

With regard to the Genesis London facility, it looks more like a grand lobby of a hotel or a high-end retail store than a traditional dealership. “It is really reminiscent of a very nice boutique hotel,” said Hijazi during a tour to kick off the proceedings. “As you walk in, you see all the beautiful offerings that Genesis has to offer, and there are beautiful, comfortable seating areas all over the place.”

The facility itself is spotless, well appointed and centered around the guest experience. Even on the service side, guests drive up to the automated service doors, which open to a concierge-style greeting from what Genesis calls a Genesis Ownership Manager, who greets them and welcomes them for their service visit. That bay is for inspection and walkarounds, but the service is done at the Hyundai dealership next door.

For auto retailers trying to elevate their game, Genesis is helping to redefine what vehicle ownership can feel like.

What does travel insurance for singapore cover, can i tailor my travel insurance for singapore, what does travel insurance for singapore exclude, how much does travel insurance for singapore cost, how can i compare travel insurance for singapore, frequently asked questions (faqs).

Singapore has long been a holiday favourite for Australians, either as a stop-over city on the way to Europe or the Middle East or as base for exploring Asia. According to the latest figures from data portal, Statista, 566,000 Australians visited the country in 2022.

If you’re also planning to visit, travel insurance for Singapore can safeguard your trip against a number of potential mishaps, such as falling ill while away, losing your luggage and belongings or even needing to cancel the trip before it’s even begun. Singapore is a safe country, but the cost of medical care is high.  Find out more about how travel insurance for Singapore works below.

There are three main types of travel insurance policy for Singapore. These are:

  • Single trip: for a one-off trip in the space of 12 months to Singapore
  • Annual multi-trip : for more than one trip in the space of 12 months to Singapore or various destinations. This type of cover can work out more cost-effective than buying multiple single trip policies but not always so it’s best to compare both types of cover.
  • Long-stay/backpacker : for an extended stay in Singapore, of typically 60 or 90 days, or 12 or 18 months. Cover for 24 months may be available, from certain providers.

When applying for travel insurance online, you’ll first be asked to enter your holiday destination. Depending on the insurer, you’ll need to click on Singapore, Asia or Worldwide travel excluding the US and nearby destinations such as Mexico, the Caribbean, Canada and Greenland. The latter option excludes a part of the world where medical costs are the highest, which in turn, bumps up the cost of cover. If you’re also planning to travel to the US, for example, there are separate worldwide policies that include it as a destination.

Insurers usually offer at least two or more types of travel insurance policy from basic or comprehensive cover and anything in between. Comprehensive policies offer the highest cover levels and widest range of benefits.

A key component of all travel insurance policies is emergency medical cover. You’ll find a comprehensive policy for Singapore will often offer an unlimited amount.

The standard of medical facilities and care in Singapore is similar to, or higher than in Australia, and the cost often much higher, so medical cover can prove a vital resource should you fall ill, or get injured, while away.

Note that in the case of an emergency, you’ll likely need to pay up-front first, and then reclaim the costs from your insurer, or confirm payment from your insurer with a hospital before it will provide treatment.

As standard, travel insurance for Singapore can also cover repatriation and emergency rescue, in severe medical cases, the loss or theft of your baggage and belongings and trip cancellation if you can no longer travel for reasons such as falling ill, suffering a bereavement or losing your job.

They will also likely include an array of other forms of protection, providing the most at comprehensive level. This includes cover for lost or stolen money, passports and documentation, missed departures, online fraud, and travel delay. The types of cover on offer, and cover limits, will vary between providers. You can find exactly what a policy includes in its product disclosure statement (PDS), which is usually found on an insurer’s website.

There are a number of ways you can ensure your policy fits your needs. Many insurers offer optional add-ons that you can purchase if you need specialised cover. These include insurance for gadgets (such as a smartphone or laptop), a cruise and playing golf.

If you’re thinking of participating in more high-octane activities, check your policy’s PDS. Many cover around 100 or so sports automatically. Cover for what an insurer classes as high-risk activities, such as skydiving, bungee jumping, outdoor rock climbing, and activities requiring a set of wheels, such as quad biking, may require purchasing an additional ‘sports pack’ for your policy.

While reading through a policy’s PDS, it’s crucial to also take note of any limitations of cover. These can differ between policies, but generally you can expect most insures to refuse claims relating to a pre-existing condition. This is a medical condition you had before taking out the policy. The insurer may not cover such conditions, or may refuse your claim if you did not declare your condition on applying for the policy.

An insurer is also unlikely to accept claims for an injury caused by taking part in a sport or activity where you did not wear the appropriate safety gear, such as a helmet, knee pads or a harness. Claims resulting from disorderly behaviour or being under the influence of drink or drugs will also likely be rejected.

It’s best to regularly check government advice for your destination, which it publishes on its Smartraveller website. This includes warnings about natural disasters, terrorism threats and pandemics. Visiting Singapore, or a part of the country, if the government puts it on its “do not travel” list, could invalidate your policy.

The amount you’ll need to pay for your travel insurance policy will depend on a range of factors. An insurer will consider your holiday destination, associated costs when travelling there and the length of time you’ll be travelling.

The price of a policy can rise for mature travellers and those with pre-existing conditions, as insurers view these travellers as more likely to claim on their policy.

To provide an idea of how much travel insurance for Singapore can cost, we ran quotes on the sites of the insurers we’ve rated the top five for travel insurance.

We used the profile of a family of four, aged 42, 40, 14 and 12, spending 13 to 26 May in the country, and assumed they have no pre-existing conditions, (although these providers do offer cover for pre-existing conditions should you need it).

We found basic cover ranged from around $106 to $202, while comprehensive cover started at around $241, with the most expensive policy costing just under $304.

Before choosing a policy, it’s important to shop around. An easy way to do this is to run quotes on the websites of various insurers and compare factors such as the type of cover a policy includes and cover levels against price.

To help you with your search, we’ve conducted some research and found our pick of the best comprehensive travel insurance policies .

Is travel insurance for Singapore worth it?

While travel insurance for Singapore isn’t mandatory, it can be considered a travel essential if you have no other means of covering emergency costs while away.

Emergency medical fees can easily stack up to thousands of dollars alone, and without travel insurance in place, you would have to cover them out of pocket. Travel insurance also can cover a number of eventualities that we often fail to consider, such as an airline, transport company, or accommodation provider going bust.

What is ‘excess’ in insurance?

An excess is a set amount you’ll be expected to pay on each approved claim. It’s usually levied per person on the policy, per event, per claim, but you can check the PDS for the specifics concerning your insurer. You usually can pick from a range of excess amounts, from $50 to $250 on average, when taking out a policy.

The more you choose to pay in excess, the lower your policy premium—the cost of your policy—typically will be, while paying less in excess will raise the cost. An excess is usually deducted from a claim amount, so you won’t need to pay for it out of pocket. However, it’s still crucial that you make sure it’s affordable.

Can I buy a policy while I’m in Singapore?

Some providers won’t cover a holiday if it’s already started. Others may cover you, but apply a waiting period of around 72 hours before you can claim.

The best time to take out travel insurance is as soon as you’ve booked your holiday, as you’ll be immediately covered for trip cancellation. Insurers are highly unlikely to consider claims resulting from something that happened before you took out the policy.
