At the end of DS9, she got the station but had lost everyone who's ever mattered to her... they are all either dead, or just gone. I did feel that, despite the huge character development of Kira from the pilot to the finale, she still had unresolved issues, and I see room for exploring that further... Comes up as Jadzia:- "You have wisdom beyond your years and friends to match. You have a casual attitude toward life and enjoy a good party. You lead with your heart and don't always make since. You have passion and pass it on to others." (Not actually a party type, but hey) For the actual percentages, 63% for both Ezri and Jadzia, 56% for O'Brien, Quark, Bashir and Worf. 50% for the Siskos, Kira and Odo. Hmm......

I'm closer to Kira than any of the others listed I think, particularly in issues of trust and loyalty. I'm not the firebrand I used to be, but I do still have a temper. It takes a lot more and a lot longer to get me mad than it used to. However, once I'm there, it's not pretty, and I'm not a forgiving sort.

You Scored as Kira Nerys: You are strong willed, quick tempered leader who would do anything for what is right. You have done some things you would rather not remember to bring justice. You do not trust easily but are very loyal. I didn't see that result coming, mainly because while only second to Sisko, Kira was my favorite character on DS9. I still have a lot of admiration for someone like that and strength wise Kira is someone I can only dream about being like. Well anyway, it's at least comforting to know that I could possibily have something in common with that kind of person.

The Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Character You Are Based On Your Zodiac Sign

Captain Sisko looks on

"Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" was born from the popularity of "Star Trek: The Next Generation." "Deep Space Nine" is anything but a carbon copy, however — the show's creators took care to make it an original show with its own conflicts, characters, and premise ( via StarTrek.com ). Uniquely, "Deep Space Nine" is set on a space station instead of a starship , is decidedly more spiritual, and features a more dramatic tone. It also stars an all-new cast, playing all-new kinds of characters — a far cry from the more homogenous Starfleet heroes seen on the Enterprise-D.

The main cast of "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" is anything but a friendly family. Based on an abandoned space station previously run by the tyrannical Cardassians (who used it to subjugate the Bajoran people), Starfleet Commander Benjamin Sisko takes over the station to oversee the reconstruction of Bajor. Joining him are Chief Miles O'Brien from "Star Trek: The Next Generation," ex-Bajoran revolutionary Kira Nerys, distrustful shapeshifter Odo, nefarious but friendly small-time crook and Ferengi bartender Quark, and two young Starfleet officers, Lt. Jadzia Dax and Dr. Julian Bashir.

With such a variety of compelling characters, it's no wonder so many Trekkies' favorite figures hail from "Deep Space Nine." There's a character for everyone of any stripe to connect with, whether it's an upstanding do-gooder or a morally grey antihero. Which "Deep Space Nine" character are you based on your zodiac sign? Read on to find out.

Aries: Commander Worf

A strong and commanding leader this time around, Lt. Commander Worf comes to Deep Space Nine to help Captain Sisko deal with the Klingons during a moment of political crisis. He proves himself an Aries during his four seasons with the show. Quick to anger, but just as quick to calm, Worf looks at every situation like a competition — one he's certain he'll win. This fiery sign, which is described as  "unafraid of conflict, highly competitive, honest and direct," fits Worf perfectly. He's a man who knows exactly what he wants, a quality he expresses time and time again during his relationship with the more playful Jadzia Dax. During the lead-up to their wedding, he makes it clear that he wants it to be traditionally Klingon.

Being decisive and bold are Aries traits too, and they've gotten Worf in trouble more than once before. In "Rules of Engagement," Worf takes on a Klingon attack party with a strategy that leads to the apparent destruction of a civilian ship. His Aries-esque desire to prove himself is used against him in the ensuing trial. Though he might be a bit hot-headed, Worf is unapologetic. Aries owns their temperament, even though their need for action and excitement often lands them in precarious situations. Their courage and nobility, something Worf has in spades, tends to see them through even the stickiest situations.

Taurus: Chief Miles O'Brien

If you're a Taurus, you probably see a lot of yourself in O'Brien. Formerly transporter chief on the Enterprise, Miles O'Brien transferred to Deep Space Nine after Season 5 of "The Next Generation," and became Sisko's chief of operations. O'Brien is essentially the station's resident mechanic, and always seems to be busy fixing the perpetually malfunctioning station. As much as he enjoys the holosuites, and as widely as he's been lauded as a war hero, O'Brien would much rather be at home with his wife and kids than out adventuring on the Defiant. Taurus, ever the homebody, is the sign for him. A solid "rock of dependability" , he can go on forever and will tackle any job you throw at him. O'Brien's the one the crew is always able to rely on, and it's that reliability that gets him into trouble. He's always biting off more than he can chew, and making it impossible to find time to relax.

Pragmatic and logical like any good engineer, O'Brien shares those traits with those born under the bull. O'Brien also displays Taurean patience, steadiness, and adherence to routine. This is probably why the writers of "Deep Space Nine"  loved to torture him so much . Like the cosmic bull, O'Brien can also be stubborn and obstinate, and is always running out of patience with his best friend Bashir's incessant exuberance.

Gemini: Garak

Fans of "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" who are at all familiar with the zodiac will know that Garak is a classic Gemini. The man talks out of both sides of his mouth, and can enter a room and morph into whatever personality is required. Far from the plain, simple tailor he claims to be, Garak uses his natural charm and charisma to beguile even the most distrustful people. He's able to size up those around him quickly, and uses those insights to get what he wants. When someone is bluffing or otherwise hiding the truth, Garak is always the first to know, possibly even before a Betazoid — he's just that good at figuring people out.

Gemini is an intelligent and expressive sign, but don't go thinking they're devious. Garak's most devilish quality is his wildly emotive grin. His startling intellect is impressively multi-faceted, boasting knowledge on just about any subject. With endless energy at their disposal, Geminis are known for being hyper and talkative, a trait they use to share said knowledge. Verbal sparring is also a form of flirting for Garak, which fans see when he meets Ziyal: The pair even argues about who is plotting to kill whom. Garak is drawn to Ziyal because of her inability to be defined — she is a true enigma. Naturally, this is fascinating to a Gemini like him.

Cancer: Leeta

If you're a Cancer, you might have a lot in common with Leeta. She is empathetic, sensitive, and deeply caring — so much so that it can sometimes overwhelm her. As Quark's most prominent "dabo girl," she uses her perceptive nature and sensitivity on the job. Wielding flirtation as a secret weapon, she always makes sure the gamblers at the wheel keep playing, even when they should know better. Outside work hours, she's a sympathetic ear, and not just to her boyfriends, Julian and Rom, both of whom are drawn to her for more than her looks. Ever the Cancer, Leeta is a tremendous source of comfort, advice, compassion, and encouragement.

A good listener, Leeta always has words of consolation in rough times, and offers strong support in good ones. But she can also be overly emotional, to the point that she can be brought to tears by an inspiring moment. Leeta has a layered personality, which surprises many, as she's often judged for more superficial qualities. This is an experience Cancer knows well. Good thing she has the sign's kind nature to fall back on — and its hidden cleverness.

Leo: Dr. Julian Bashir

If you're looking for the show's Leo, you're looking for Julian Bashir, the idealistic doctor. Leos are bold, warm, and loving, and while it takes viewers a while to discover those qualities in Bashir, they definitely emerge. At first, he's a slightly obnoxious young doctor fresh out of Starfleet Academy. But as he opens up, we find a captivating personality. Bashir also has a real way with words, and is able to speak eloquently on almost any topic, no matter how recently he might have learned about it — thanks, in large part, to his genetically engineered brain.

Though he has that classic Leo ambition, Bashir is more driven by emotion than one might think. His troubled upbringing still haunts him, as seen in "Doctor Bashir, I Presume," which reveals his parents and the genetic tampering of his youth. This rough childhood leads Bashir to seek praise and resist opening up to those around him. It also spurs brash confidence, and a certain artificial swagger that he uses to feel safe. These Leo traits give him a reputation as a braggart, but Bashir just sees himself as sharing his abilities, through which he feels more connected to his friends on the station. He wants them to celebrate his accomplishments, but he also wants to celebrate theirs. That's what makes Bashir a true Leo, and such a valued and trusted friend.

Nog has one of the greatest character arcs in all of "Star Trek" history, and is one of the few to have  a ship named after him in the 32th century . Yet Nog begins life on Deep Space Nine as little more than a petty teenage miscreant, prone to looting storage lockers and pranking patrons on the promenade. Over the course of the show's run, the petty thief becomes a respected Starfleet lieutenant who fights the Dominion in some of the most infamous battles of the war, losing his leg in the process.

If you're a Virgo, you should be proud to be Nog. What makes him a Virgo? Those born under this sign are marked by their ability to fix things around them. Once Nog matures, that description strikes right at the heart of who he is: When Nog sees someone with a problem, he reaches out to help. Fans see this in "Treachery, Faith, and the Great River" when Nog helps pretty much everyone on the station, and in "In The Cards," when he's willing to use his own savings to help Jake acquire a baseball card for Captain Sisko. This all stems from a Virgo's need to feel useful and be a part of something larger than themselves. This is also what motivates Nog to join Starfleet. Virgos are also known for their fastidiousness, which we see when Nog briefly becomes roommates with Jake after coming back from the Academy.

Libra: Lt. Ezri Dax

After receiving the Dax symbiont in an emergency, Ezri Tigan isn't ready to be a joined Trill. Despite being two people in one — or, from one perspective, 12 people in one — Ezri feels alone, and seeks out Dax's old friend, Benjamin Sisko. This loneliness and need for companionship defines Libras, whose strength often flows from those around them.

Libras are difficult to pin down, because they can seem contradictory. Ezri is nothing if not a walking contradiction: One moment she's fun-loving and gregarious like Jadzia, while other times, she's withdrawn and sullen, like other previous hosts. Because she wasn't truly ready to receive the Dax symbiont, Ezri gains a jumbled mess of a personality, which can seem different depending on who she's around. But Ezri isn't entirely incoherent. She also displays Libra's compassionate and empathetic traits, making her the perfect station counselor. She fills this role to perfection when she counsels Garak through a serious bout with claustrophobia. Her aversion to conflict is also a Libra quality, and so too is her need to find validation. This is particularly evident in her joining with Dax, as seen in "Prodigal Daughter."

Scorpio: Odo

Some mistake Scorpio as the sign of villains, but that is definitely not the case. It's true that, if pointed in the wrong direction, a Scorpio can veer towards shadiness. But in the right environment, Scorpio can be the sign for the best of us. Scorpio's traits are not necessarily bad, as they're often smeared — they're simply misunderstood. Yes, they are dark, brooding, and intense, and indeed, they can be loners. But if you get to know them, you know they have hearts of gold.

Scorpios tend to be quiet, somewhat distrustful, and excellent judges of character. That certainly sounds like Odo, so if you're a Scorpio, you no longer need to fear being solely compared to villains like Darth Vader. Odo may be a grim and dour sort, but he's also noble and brave, with a ceaseless desire for justice. A Scorpio like him might be difficult to get to know, but that's only because they tend to keep to themselves. Scorpios have a grim view of the world, and tend to be cynical and jaded — some of the most intense view every interaction as a battle of wills. But Scorpios also have a rigid moral compass, whichever way it may lean, and strict ethical lines they never cross. It's his Scorpio traits that make Odo such a good investigator, and the station's greatest chief of security.

Sagittarius: Lt. Commander Jadzia Dax

A fearless adventurer and courageous warrior, Jadzia Dax is a classic Sagittarius. The 300-year-old joined Trill is deeply principled and highly emotional. An explorer of the human condition (or perhaps, in this case, the humanoid condition), Dax sees the galaxy and its wonders as her own personal playground. Though she relishes exploring the unknown, the scientist in her is always looking to understand how things work. This Sagittarian thirst for knowledge pushes Dax to investigate the interesting anomalies they encounter, which often leads to trouble. Notably, in "Children of Time," she implores Sisko to explore an unusual planet that promptly gets them thrown backwards in time.

A Sagittarius knows that knowledge of one's self is often far deeper and more powerful than knowledge of the universe. Dax is on a never-ending quest to understand herself, which we see in "Facets." Often said to be one of the most worldly signs in the zodiac, a Sagittarius' optimism can be infectious, their aspirational nature influencing those in their orbit: Captain Sisko has confessed to being both inspired and frustrated by Dax's relentless positivity. She's also never one to play it safe, being a risk-taker in terms of both action and emotion. Diving headfirst into situations based on intense instinct is definitely familiar to a Sagittarius.

Capricon: Major Kira Nerys

Capricorn is the sign of the sea goat, but it may as well be the sign of the Bajoran revolutionary and freedom fighter Kira Nerys. Born in Dahkur Province on Bajor, Nerys grew up during the Cardassian Occupation, spending the entirety of her formative years in the Singha refugee camp. With no real childhood to speak of, Nerys was forced to be an adult from an early age, with a maturity and seriousness lacked by those privileged enough to enjoy their youth. Responsible, dedicated, and devoted to duty, Nerys is a classic Capricorn. She exemplifies the sign's traits as a member of the resistance, Captain Sisko's second in command, and a high-ranking member of the Bajoran Militia, when Starfleet takes control of station.

Cold and stoic, it takes Nerys a while to warm up to those around her. But when she does, she becomes a trusted, valued, and unshakable friend and ally, as those with Capricorns in their lives will find familiar. She doesn't care for attention or adulation, only honest respect. Nerys seeks to prove herself, not just to those around her, but to herself as well. In many ways, it's as if she's constantly living in the shadow of the Bajoran Occupation: She seems to need to validate not just her own worthiness, but that of all Bajorans. Like a Capricorn, she goes about this as a pragmatic, dutiful perfectionist, but also a strong, independent, and powerful leader.

Aquarius: Quark

You may look at Quark and see little more than a greedy, sniveling criminal. But in truth, he is so much more than that. Quark possesses an unswerving moral compass, and a strong desire to do the right thing. He's as brave as any Klingon warrior when the cause is one he's passionate about: In "The Magnificent Ferengi," he leads a team to take on the Jem'Hadar to free his mother, and in "Sacrifice of Angels," he helps save the station from Dominion rule.

But as an Aquarius, the sign that  "fetishizes personal freedom," Quark prefers to be a loner. He embraces his reputation as a criminal, and even enjoys sparring with Odo over his extralegal activities. He's also an unabashed capitalist, and a firm believer in the free market. Quark's a bit of a contrarian as well: He revels in holding controversial opinions, something he sees as a mark of intelligence, and enjoys living in opposition to Starfleet. Quark is anything but ordinary — to him, ordinary is boring. In that, he is the embodiment of the water bearer. These visionary folks often defy description, living as philosophers in their own utopian worlds, run by their own brands of logic — in Quark's case, the Rules of Acquisition. If you ask us, it may as well be the Rules of Aquarius.

Pisces: Captain Benjamin Sisko

In the early seasons of "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine," we might have called Sisko an Aries, or perhaps a Libra. But Captain Sisko of the last few seasons is definitely a Pisces. Sisko possesses both childlike enthusiasm (especially for the extinct human sport of baseball) and wisdom beyond his years. This latter trait grows even more intense as he embraces his role as Bajoran Emissary.

To a Pisces, everything is a sign. As Sisko accepts his destiny as the Emissary to the Prophets, everything he sees becomes a sign — and usually, it is. Receiving orb shadows and visions, Sisko sometimes struggles to tell the difference between dreams and reality. In some cases, it's both . Pisces are also prone to fantasy, and, as any Trekkie knows, "Far Beyond the Stars" sees Sisko inhabit a fantasy world as science fiction writer Benny Russell.

Pisces are often misunderstood by society for their esoteric natures, just as Starfleet begins to distrust Sisko when his visions become too powerful. In "Rapture," Sisko is instructed to separate himself from his role as Emissary, and he flatly refuses. Pisces " wants to dissolve. To wrest themselves of a physical form. " That's exactly what Sisko does in the series finale, shedding his corporeal form and joining the Prophets in the Celestial Temple.

SIMON PEGG INTERVIEW

If Simon Pegg wasn’t one of Hollywood’s most in-demand comic actors, he’d have gone down a very different route. "I always wanted to be a vet," he told TV Times. "Then I found out you had to be good at numbers and they were never my strong suit."

At least Pegg had his acting career to fall back on – and a very successful one at that, thanks to the sitcom Spaced and movie comedies like Shaun of the Dead.

"It was down to luck really," he said modestly. "We just wanted to make films that we would enjoy ourselves – and it just so happened that a lot of other people wanted to watch them, too."

One of those people was JJ Abrams, who was so impressed with Pegg’s work that he offered him a role as tech wiz Benji Dunn alongside Tom Cruise in the Mission: Impossible movies.

Abrams then invited him to play Montgomery ‘Scotty’ Scott in his 2009 Star Trek reboot.

When Pegg was cast, he made sure that he didn’t just mimic the performance of original actor James Doohan. "It would have been a disservice to James to do that," said Simon.

"‘I didn’t want Scotty to be a comic character, because he also goes through some pretty serious stuff."

It’s a role that has become close to Pegg’s heart. His third movie, Star Trek Beyond, is released in cinemas in the UK this Friday, while Sky Greats becomes Sky Cinema Star Trek on Monday, showcasing the sci-fi classic as part of its 50th anniversary.

Simon has also taken on the responsibility of writing duties on the new $200million blockbuster, which sees the crew of the Enterprise marooned on an unknown planet after a surprise attack by a wave of vicious alien predators.

"Nothing I’ve ever worked on before as a writer has ever had a prior legacy like this," he said. "Being handed the keys to the Star Trek universe has been such an honour. It’s a very daunting prospect."

Despite being known for his comedies, Simon is quick to reassure Star Trek fans that the new movie won’t just be filled with gags.

"It’s not a comedy, but we wanted to make it fun because the ideology of the original series was bright and optimistic. That doesn’t stop it from having nail-biting jeopardy and genuine threat. You’re going to be on the edge of your seat, with a side of humour."

DID YOU KNOW?

Canadian-born James Doohan, who played the original Scotty, not only gave the Scottish Chief Engineer an Aberdeen accent, he also supplied all the male voices to the 1970s animated series. Doohan’s Scotty inspired many fans to pursue careers in engineering. Astronaut Neil Armstrong, the first man on the Moon, thanked him for his contribution.

The iconic catchphrase ‘Beam me up, Scotty’, was only ever used in the animated series, while in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, Kirk says, ‘Scotty, beam me up.’ Since his death, aged 85 in 2005, some of Doohan’s ashes have been launched into space on three missions.

Chris Doohan currently plays his father’s character in the web series Star Trek.

Take this Which Star Trek Character Are You Quiz to find out. Answer these quick questions to get if are you Picard, Spock, Kirk, Data, or Riker.

What Is Star Trek Quiz?

Star Trek Quiz is a 30-question personality test that will match you with the most relatable character from Star Trek, based on your personality.

Star Trek Summary

Captain Jonathan Archer is a famous figure in Starfleet history, having served as Captain of the original USS Enterprise during the Federation’s early days. Archer led the first Enterprise crew on a ground-breaking mission to explore the galaxy. Archer’s crew faced a slew of new challenges and hazards, and he lacked many of the resources that succeeding Starfleet Captains had. Archer devoted most of his time to maintaining his Starship and defending his crew, even though it was a new and completely untested form of technology.

Michael Burnham is a unique figure in Star Trek because she did not have a particularly distinguished Starfleet career. As a First Officer aboard the USS Shenzhou, she was court-martialed for assaulting her Captain, Captain Georgiou, and shooting unprovoked on a Klingon warship. After being recruited onboard the USS Discovery, she was released from prison. Burnham’s early existence was equally as gloomy as her present, as she was adopted by a Vulcan parent after her parents died, their traditions regarding suppressing emotion clashing with her Human ancestry.

Which Star Trek character are you?

Captain Janeway of the USS Voyager was a clever and pragmatic captain. She worked hard to secure the safety of her crew when her ship and crew were lightyears away from any Federation station of known civilization. She and her crew struggled across an unexplored region of space, often disregarding Federation protocol in the pursuit of survival, to get home safely. While many fans disagree with Janeway’s techniques, others see it as a survivalist’s mentality and drive. Also, you will find out which Star Trek character are you in this quiz.

Captain Benjamin Sisko led the Deep Space 9 space station for seven years and is widely regarded as the initiator of the Dominion War when he ignored the Dominion’s ultimatum. Sisko, who was also known as the Emissary of the Prophets after discovering the Bajoran wormhole, was hailed as a great tactician and was crucial to the Federation’s triumph in the war.

About the quiz

Sisko’s approach to his position as Captain was unique in that he used blackmail and other more political means to intimidate individuals in his conversations.

Captain Jean-Luc Picard was a well-respected Captain during his tenure, commanding both the USS Stargazer and the USS Enterprise and establishing first contact with a number of alien species, including the Ferengi, the Q Continuum, and the cybernetic terror known as the Borg. Although he was a skilled battlefield strategist, performing the Picard Maneuver by using the ship’s warp drive to appear in two places at once, he preferred a more diplomatic approach, making sure to respect a race’s ideals and motivations while asserting the Federation’s role as a protector of the innocent. Picard would subsequently leave Starfleet because he no longer believed in assisting civilization.

Despite his repeated contempt for Starfleet and Federation regulations, Captain James Tiberius Kirk is one of the most decorated Starfleet captains. During his five-year assignment, Kirk set a record for the most new species encountered, as well as becoming a time traveler before becoming a Federation Rear Admiral. Kirk died after being involved in the Genisis event, where he met his spiritual successor Captain Jena-Luc Picard. Kirk is also the only person to have defeated the Kobayashi Maru scenario in Starfleet Academy, an unbreakable training exercise. Kirk reconfigured the test on his third attempt and won a commendation for his innovative approach.

Which "Star Trek: Discovery" Character Are You?

Which "Star Trek: Discovery" Character Are You?

About This Quiz

"Star Trek: Discovery" is the sixth "Star Trek" series to air on television, assuming you don't count the short-lived animated series from the early 1970s. Like its predecessors, "Discovery" takes audiences to a universe explored by Starfleet and the United Federation of Planets as they seek out new life and new civilizations, boldly going where no one has gone before. The show also does it in a way that's more intense than previous "Treks." It's grittier, darker and much bleaker than the earlier shows. In a lot of ways, that makes it more interesting, though. Even in Starfleet, things have to get harsh sometimes.

Audiences are split over "Discovery" with some loving it, some not being super thrilled and others waiting to see how it plays out over time. But it's hard to deny that it features some amazing performances like Doug Jones as the Kelpien Saru. "Discovery" also features some crazy new ideas that "Trek" has never explored before, like the Spore Drive, which allows the Discovery to travel across the universe in a heartbeat. There's a lot going on here! With all the bold new ideas and diverse characters, there's something to appeal to any hardcore "Trek" fan. No doubt there's also at least one character that seems to mesh with you almost perfectly. Want to know which one it is? Take the quiz and see!

Which 'Star Trek' Character Are You, Based On Your Zodiac Sign?

Jacob Shelton

Who hasn’t wondered where they fit into the ever-expanding Star Trek universe? What began in the 1960s as a cut-and-dried space western developed into one of the most beloved science fiction series of the 20th and 21st centuries. To find out where you’d fit into the myriad worlds of Star Trek try consulting your horoscope and seeing what your zodiac sign says about your disposition in the Alpha Quadrant.

With the vast array of Federation officers, alien races, and evil robots that populate the final frontier it’s impossible to pin down exactly which Star Trek character you are through astrology, but the following chart will help you get a handle on where you fit in the world of the Federation.

After discovering which Star Trek  character you are, why not take a look and see how the stars place you a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away .

Aries (March 21 - April 19): Commander Riker

Aries (March 21 - April 19): Commander Riker

A  stubborn sign if ever there was one, Aries are a confident and determined lot with a penchant for being a little moody. They can jump into the fire without thinking through all of the options, but they don't necessarily see that as a bad thing. The more challenging a situation then the more exciting they find it to be.

Despite spending his best years playing second fiddle on the Enterprise D , Commander Riker is no spring chicken when it comes to taking the lead. After Captain Picard was taken over by the Borg, Riker spearheaded an effort to stop the hybrid cybernetic creatures at all costs, even if it meant killing his mentor.

Taurus (April 20 - May 20): Captain Janeway

Taurus (April 20 - May 20): Captain Janeway

If you're in Starfleet then you'll want to serve under a Taurus. You can always count on them to pull through, and if they're your friend they'll be loyal to you forever. However, don't get on their bad side because that's where you'll spend the rest of your career once you do.

When Captain Janeway finds herself all the way in the Delta quadrant with no way to return home she stays cool under pressure, even when she has to work with the Maquis to find a way back to Earth. She goes to bat for her crew constantly, especially her main man Tuvok, whom despite not technically being her number two, is definitely her best friend on the crew.

Gemini (May 21 – June 20): Garak

Gemini (May 21 – June 20): Garak

You could drop a Gemini in a the middle of a space station full of hostile enemies and they would find a way to adapt . You can count on a Gemini to consistently be inconsistent. They'll be cagey and flaky one week, while being on time and emotionally open the next. You don't know exactly what you're going to get with this sign, but you know it's going to be exciting.

Garak is the Gemini to lead all Geminis. He seems to be a simple tailor, but he's also a spy. He's distinctly Cardassian except for that whole thing about working closely with the Federation. This is the one character in all of Star Trek who is impossible to figure out.

Cancer (June 21 - July 22): Michael Burnham

Cancer (June 21 - July 22): Michael Burnham

If you need to get a little emotional look no further than a Cancer. These Water signs are guided purely by the the volatile nature of their mental states. In the best of times this makes them thoughtful and provides them with a way to look at things outside the box. At their worst, Cancers are easily intimidated and can get twisted up inside their own heads.

Despite being raised on Vulcan, Michael Burnham is one of the most emotional characters that Star Trek has ever seen. She tries to get through the obstacles that are placed before her with her wits alone, but she's usually swayed heavily by her emotions and this ends up getting her in trouble time and time again.

Leo (July 23 - August 22): Captain James T. Kirk

Leo (July 23 - August 22): Captain James T. Kirk

Leos are big, bright balls of fire and everyone else is just existing in their orbit. Or at least that's how they act . They're only comfortable when they're the center of attention, which is usually all the time, and they really don't know how to sit out a conversation without throwing in their two cents.

Captain Kirk is the closest thing the Federation has to a cocksure, swaggering pirate. He enters ever situation with a smirk, and he doesn't believe in a no-win scenario. There's nothing in the known universe that can stop Kirk when he puts his mind to something, be it a genetically altered muscle bound freak, his own crew, or death itself.

Virgo (August 23 - September 22): Saru

Virgo (August 23 - September 22): Saru

If you're looking for someone to labor endlessly over a thankless task then look no further than a Virgo. People who fall under this sign are perfectly happy to drudge through an assignment without so much as making a peep. However they can also spook easily and they tend to be caustic if you catch them at the wrong time. All in all, they make the perfect science officers.

When the audience first meets Saru he's a scaredy-cat Kelpien who would rather run away from a fight than directly engage. As he grows throughout the first season of Discovery he learns how to use his fear as an advantage. Through his tireless efforts and unyielding work ethic (and a little help from Michael Burnham) he managed to lead his ship back from the mirror universe.

Libra (September 23 - October 22): Deanna Troi

Libra (September 23 - October 22): Deanna Troi

As the most diplomatic and impartial of the signs, Libras can get a bad wrap for being indecisive. However, where other signs may make a snap judgment, Libras are simply weighing out all the options and trying to understand everyone's point of view. This sign can get a little down on themselves every once in a while, but they would never let themselves suffer too much.

Deanna Troi is the perfect example of a Libra. Her empathic nature allows her to literally understand what everyone is thinking in any given scenario (barring a mental block), and her main duty is to help Captain Picard settle civil disputes before things get ugly.

Scorpio (October 23 - November 21): Quark

Scorpio (October 23 - November 21): Quark

When it comes to Scorpios this is a sign that can find their way out of any sticky situation in which they may find themselves. When you may think you're in a life or death scenario, they're busy thinking about what they're going to have for breakfast the next morning. That isn't to say that they keep the most cool heads of the signs - in fact, they can be quite pain in the neck if you're on their bad side . It's hard to know how a Scorpio really feels because they like to keep secrets - especially if they feel like their intimate knowledge can be beneficial in some way.

Quark is basically a walking guide to Scorpios. As a Ferengi he's always looking for a better deal, and despite being a business man at heart he can sometimes let his emotions sway him. Regardless of whether he's trapped in Roswell, NM, or a Cardassian-occupied space station, he can always find a way to escape with a tidy profit.

Sagittarius (November 22 - December 21): Q

Sagittarius (November 22 - December 21): Q

A Sagittarius  can always find the humor at the center of every situation. As the idealistic travelers of the zodiac, they understand that life is simply a series of moments that indiscriminately connect. Rather than find this meaninglessness to be depressing, they revel in the inconsistencies of life as they continue to stockpile new friends and experiences. If you're not in the mood for this particular attitude you can be severely annoyed by a Sagittarius.

Obviously this kind of behavior is most apparent in Q, the omnipotent traveler who exists as both a friend and thorn in Captain Picard's side. He sees the universe as something to be experienced rather than to be harnessed, and because he's constantly trying to make people think in the same way he does this makes him come off like kind of an ass.

Capricorn (December 22 - January 19): Captain Picard

Capricorn (December 22 - January 19): Captain Picard

In their heart of hearts, Capricorns prefer the time-honored classics. They look back to history as a way of understanding the present and preparing for the future. You may call them workaholics but they would prefer to be labeled as over-achievers . They prefer to stick to a disciplined plan of action as a way to achieve their preferred results and no one is going to get them to change.

Captain Picard has never shied away from admitting that he's obsessed with history. He's more than just an "archeology buff;" he has to know the ins and outs of a society, and this had lead him to being one of the most well respected diplomats of his time. Some people in the Federation may seem him as a pompous, overworked jerk, but that's why he's sitting in the Captain's chair of the Federation's flagship and everyone else is eating his space dust.

Aquarius (January 20 - February 18): Spock

Aquarius (January 20 - February 18): Spock

An Aquarius is one of the few signs that genuinely takes pride in the fact that they belong to their particular place in the zodiac. This sign does their best to tamp down their emotions until they come spilling out in one big burst, and even though they're some of the best problem-solvers in the entire zodiac, they'd prefer to take care of all their problems on their own.

You won't find a Star Trek character who embodies the traits of an Aquarius more than Spock, the half-Vulcan, pointy-eared, green-blooded goblin himself. While Spock spends his waking life attempting to solve problems through the scientific method, he can't help but let some of his human emotions bubble up from time to time, no matter how hard he tries to suppress them.

Pisces (February 19 - March 20): Reginald Barclay

Pisces (February 19 - March 20): Reginald Barclay

People who are born under the sign of Pisces tend to live with their heads in the clouds . They care about a great many number of things, and even though they're passionate about everything from science to theater sometimes they can be afraid to truly express themselves, preferring instead to escape reality by any means necessary.

Reginald Barclay - Redge to his friends and Broccoli to everyone who can't seem to remember his name - doesn't appear on every episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation , but when he does you know that you're going to see him learn something about connecting with the outside world by locking himself in the holodeck. He would rather create digital avatars of his shipmates than actually interact with them, and despite being a capable officer he's often afraid to speak up.

Which Star Trek: The Next Generation character are you?

About This Quiz

Gene Roddenberry created "Star Trek: The Original Series" back in the '60s, and a phenomenon was born. However, while the franchise is culturally embedded these days and impossible to avoid, it's easy to forget that it wasn't always inevitable that it would go beyond "The Original Series" and the accompanying movies.

Enter "Star Trek: The Next Generation." This bold new show appeared in the '80s and followed the adventures of Captain Jean-Luc Picard (as played by Patrick Stewart, a true Shakespearean who could lend gravitas to a boiled egg) and the crew of the Galaxy-class Enterprise D.

The show was culturally progressive and diverse, with women in many major roles and a willingness to explore new perspectives. Like "The Original Series," it didn't draw its plots from petty squabbles among the crew, but from external sources and a bolder vision of what humankind was capable of.

Humanity is literally put on trial in the show, and the better angels of our nature are the true heroes. Roddenberry's optimism shined through, even after he stopped working regularly on the show. "The Next Generation" is rightly regarded as, in some ways, the pinnacle of everything "Star Trek" is about, and it lives in the pantheon of great American sci-fi as a result. So let's find out where you belong among this inspiring crew!

Go On a Tour of One of the Greatest Sets in Star Trek History

Grab a jumja stick and let quark himself take you through one of the most important locations in star trek : deep space nine's promenade..

What’s the most important set on a Star Trek show? Depending on the series, it might differ—for the most part, it’s going to be the bridge of a starship . But “the bridge of a starship” isn’t really the answer to that question: it’s the place that feels most like home . And while it’s definitely not a starship, Deep Space Nine ’s promenade is exactly that, perhaps more than any other iconic locale in the franchise.

Today as part of a series of updates to its virtual tour offerings on the Apple Vision Pro, the Roddenberry Archive and OTOY announced a raft of new virtual reality set tours , taking fans inside the world of Star Trek . To celebrate this week’s return of Star Trek: Discovery , the bridge of the legendary vessel is now available for virtual visitation, as are the first virtual tours inside the fleets of the Klingon Empire —specifically the I.K.S. Amar , the K’t’inga battle cruiser from the opening of The Motion Picture . But perhaps the most fascinating addition is a further exploration of Deep Space Nine ’s titular station, and the most important place of all among its rings and pylons : the thoroughfare of the Promenade.

The Promenade was already part of the archive, but now audiences can explore further aspects of the set—one of the biggest ever built for Star Trek , the biggest outright at the time of filming—but the real highlight is a new, accompanying documentary about the design history of the set and its legacy, narrated by the perfect tour guide for such a locale: Armin Shimmerman, the man behind the lobes of the Promenade’s premiere businessman, Quark.

It’s a great little piece, looking at the set’s design process, how its scale was captured on screen, as well as Shimmerman relishing in giving little in-universe guides to everything that the Promenade had to offer. It’s a reminder of not just what an impressive set it was, but how its design language informed the very heart of what Deep Space Nine was doing with Star Trek . In the Promenade, we have a primary set that is unlike anything we’ve ever seen on the show before: this is not Federation design, or Starfleet ship corridors, but the brutalist angles of Cardassian aesthetic clashing with the pops of color from the flags hung by the Bajorans and other alien cultures steadily in the process of reclaiming what was once a grim shadow over the oppressions of Bajor. Few Star Trek sets are exactly comforting, but this heady mix of sharp angles and cool metallics against the vibrancy of shop lights and flags brings the Promenade a sense of homeliness that few other regular Trek sets could match.

But one thing this tour can’t capture about the Promenade that made it so compelling in the first place is the people milling about the place: the life that made it feel like home more than anything else. Sure, every Trek set has had some flavor of walk and talk on it before, the bustle of crew milling about and looking at monitors, but the Promenade was life itself made manifest. The culture clash of the design language was echoed in the people —so many people, more people than we would often see in one place on Trek outside of big crowd sequences or social hubs like canteens and bars. You had Starfleet crew, sticking out in their black and division-colored uniforms, you had the browns and beiges of Odo and his local security officers, you had Bajoran priests, you had civilians of all species and stripes, from visitors passing through to vendors hocking food and trinkets—and, of course, the myriad patrons of myriad scruples flocking in and out of Quark’s bar. The Promenade was defined by background vibrancy, a social and communal space that was far more important to Deep Space Nine than the cramped battle bridge of the Defiant , or the command crew’s home in operations.

That life made the Promenade sing—sometimes literally, in the case of the Klingon restaurateur playing his accordion and roaring traditional Klingon ballads at diners—and it made it the heart of Deep Space Nine , a sacred space for the viewer that the show could then violate at a moment’s notice to amplify any given threat. The Promenade has been home to firefights, assassination attempts, it’s been besieged , it’s been captured by our heroes’ worst enemies, but it’s also a place of love, adventure, and fun, the sight of some of the best moments in the entirety of DS9 . It is, after all, where the show’s heart is—and that is where home resides.

This 'Star Trek Discovery' Character Is a Deep-Cut 'DS9' Reference

  • Callum Keith Rennie joins Star Trek: Discovery as Kellerun Captain Rayner, revealing the obscure species from Deep Space Nine .
  • Rayner's Kellerun backstory is crucial to Rayner's characterization and mission, with the showrunner promising a focus on his personal history.
  • Discovery continues the tradition of exploring one-off alien races with new characters, adding depth and diversity to the final season.

Veteran actor Callum Keith Rennie will join the cast of the final season of Star Trek: Discovery as the alien Captain Rayner, and now we know what species he is. Fans have speculated that Rayner's pointed ears mark him as a Vulcan or a Romulan, but a new interview reveals that he is a member of the Kellerun, an obscure species from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine . TrekCore.com has the details from SFX Magazine's feature on Discovery 's upcoming fifth season , which will premiere on Paramount+ early next month.

Rayner's species will apparently be important to his characterization and the mysterious mission he joins the USS Discovery crew for, as they race against time in the show's final bow. Says showrunner Michelle Paradise , "He’s Kellerun, which is a minor planet mentioned in one of the other iterations… we learn more about his personal backstory and how that plays into who he is, and why he is how he is. We learn about that as the season goes on, and the planet he’s from has a lot to do with that." It won't be the first time an important character on Discovery comes from a one-off alien race; Commander Nhan ( Rachael Ancheril ), who debuted in the series' second season, is a Barzan, a race that had up to that point only appeared in the third-season Next Generation episode "The Price".

Who Are the Kellerun?

The Kellerun made their first and (so far) only appearance in "Armageddon Game", which first aired in 1994 as part of Deep Space Nine 's second season. A species with distinctive large, pointed ears, they had been at war for centuries with their neighbors, the T'Lani, in a conflict that utilized the Harvesters, deadly biological weapons. After the two races made peace with each other, Starfleet sent in Deep Space Nine crew members Dr. Julian Bashir ( Alexander Siddig ) and Miles O'Brien ( Colm Meany ) to help dismantle the remaining Harvesters. However, the Kellerun and T'Lani insist that all knowledge pertaining to the Harvesters must be destroyed - which means killing Bashir and O'Brien, too. The two have to make a desperate race for survival as their friends try to save them from the two alien species.

Although the Kellerun did not appear on the series again, the episode established Bashir and O'Brien's friendship, which endured for the rest of the show's run. Canadian actor Callum Keith Rennie is a veteran of science fiction productions, having starred in Battlestar Galactica , Impulse , The X-Files , Jessica Jones , and The Umbrella Academy . Discovery will be his first Star Trek appearance.

Star Trek: Discovery 's fifth and final season will premiere April 4, 2024 on Paramount+ , wehere past seasons are also streaming. Stay tuned to Collider for future updates, and watch the trailer for Discovery 's fifth season below.

Which star trek: the next generation character are you based on your zodiac.

Obsessed with Star Trek The Next Generation? Then you'll definitely want to know which character you are based on your zodiac sign. Check this out!

One of the most popular series in the  Star Trek  franchise,  Star Trek: The Next Generation  took the torch from the original 60s series in 1987 and charted its own course to boldly go where its predecessor had never gone before. From 1987 until the early 00s, Captain Picard and the crew of the Enterprise-D's  adventures spanned seven seasons and several popular films, taking Gene Roddenberry's original Utopian ideals and updating them for a new generation of fans.

RELATED:  Star Trek The Original Series vs TNG: Which One Is Better?

Like Captain Kirk and Co. on the original  Enterprise,  the characters of  TNG  became fan-favorites. Fans came to identify with Commander Data's unique sense of humor, Riker's effort to be the next intergalactic Casanova, Deanna Troi's unwavering empathy, and Captain Picard's stalwart integrity. Read on to find out which  TNG  character you are based on your zodiac sign.

ARIES - WILLIAM RIKER

As the first officer aboard the  Enterprise-D,  Commander William Riker had a lot of responsibilities, but despite the duties inherent to his rank, he still managed to become quite popular with his fellow crew members. While his aggressive nature initially clashed with Captain Picard's, he was able to learn some diplomatic skills from his more reserved commanding officer.

RELATED:  Star Trek: Top 10 Riker Romances, Ranked

Like most Aries, Riker was adventurous, forthright, and much more fond of taking initiative head-on rather than talking about a plan of attack. Though he could be impulsive and quick-tempered, his emotionally dynamic side made him passionate. His charm was as infamous as his love for jazz music.

TAURUS - WORF

As the first Klingon to join Starfleet and raised by a human family for most of his life, Commander Worf often felt conflicted about his heritage. When he became the Chief of Security aboard the Enterprise-D,  after Tasha Yar perished during First Contact with a hostile alien, he took comfort in finding his purpose.

Unlike most Klingons but reminiscent of most Tauruses, Worf was known for his patience, reservation, and reliability. The only times he could be possessive and hostile were in matters of love and honor, but most of the time Worf reveled in the discipline and routine of his work. Beneath much of his reserved placidity, he could be quite warm-hearted and even lovable.

GEMINI - WESLEY CRUSHER

Considered a wunderkind/boy genius, Wesley Crusher was given a position on the bridge of the  Enterprise-D  despite not having completed Starfleet Academy by the time of his assignment. With an intricate knowledge of all things mechanical and technological, he picked up skills quickly in all manner of departments, from astroscience to engineering.

RELATED:  Star Trek TNG Cast: Where Are They Now?

Like many Gemini, Wesley was extremely adaptive and intelligent, often using his versatility to help others around him. His youthful exuberance sometimes worked against him and he occasionally felt like he wasn't taken seriously by older members of the crew. Luckily he could communicate his needs and be receptive to the advice of his peers.

CANCER - DEANNA TROI

As a Betazoid, Deanna Troi  made an exceptional ship's counselor aboard the Enterprise-D,  utilizing her inherent empathetic abilities to sense crew member's emotional distress and offer them advice. Her compassionate nature and convivial personality always put her colleagues at ease.

Like a true Cancer, her intuition served her well in intimate matters, as well as on missions, when Captain Picard relied on her ability to read the emotions of new civilizations. While she could occasionally be moody and prone to over-stimulation, she always puts the needs of the crew above her own and exercised discretion when reaching out too far.

Known as Data's "brother" and fellow synthetic artificial intelligence, Lore was developed by Dr. Noonien Soong to have the best of Data's capabilities with one key difference -- an emotion chip that let him process various feelings in ways that Data would never be able to do.

In stark contrast to Data, Lore was like many Leos -- bombastic, friendly, and able to see a bigger picture. Over time, he felt that androids were naturally superior to humans and worked to cripple aspects of the Federation and overthrow the human race. His dogmatic intolerance for organic life ultimately led to his necessary destruction.

VIRGO - DATA

Data was the first android ever to be inducted into Starfleet and much of what he did as a bridge officer aboard the  Enterprise-D  was used as a guide for the duties of all synthetic life forms there might be in the future. Though he didn't have the capacity to experience emotions as humans did, this didn't stop him from aspiring to be as close to human as possible.

RELATED:  Star Trek: Data's 10 Most Human Relationships

True to most Virgos, Data could always be relied upon to complete tasks with mechanical efficiency, his diligence represented in his thorough attention to detail. His practicality could also cause him to obsess over perfection, to the detriment of appreciating something in its raw and imperfect state.

LIBRA - GEORDI LA FORGE

Though Geordi La Forge lost his sight at a very young age, he didn't let his physical handicap prevent him from following his dreams of pursuing a career in Starfleet. As Chief of Engineering aboard the  Enterprise-D,  he was known for being as easygoing as a well-maintained warp core.

Though he often had mechanics on his mind, like most Libras, Geordi was also a hopeless romantic. He once created a holo program just to spend time with his favorite engineer and despite his fear of rejection, he was never deterred in making attempts to find a date. Unfortunately, like Libras, Geordi could be easily duped, especially by alien life forms who posed as his mother.

SCORPIO - GUINAN

An old friend of Captain Picard's , Guinan served as the bartender on board the  Enterprise-D,  ready with a drink and some sound advice for anyone who wandered into Ten Forward. As an El-Aurian, her culture was known for being "listeners", though Q maintained she was capable of much greater powers than mere mortals could imagine.

Like a true Scorpio, Guinan was intuitive about customer's problems and forceful with her opinion of them. Though she could often give off an aura of secrecy, beneath her collected nature resided an inward warmth filled with passion and emotion, which seemed to resonate with other beings on her wavelength.

SAGITTARIUS - Q

As a member of the Q Continuum, Q was never a part of the  Enterprise-D  crew, though that didn't stop him from spending all of his free time (which was considerable, as a time-hopping immortal) on board. He loved nothing more than to pester Captain Picard and harass his fellow officers.

RELATED:  Star Trek: The 10 Biggest TNG Twists & Reveals, Ranked

Possessed of a dynamic and jovial personality, like most Sagittarians, Q could be quite philosophical. Though most felt he was incapable of being anything but obtuse, he could cut to the point like a phaser beam when it suited him. His morality games with humanity often put the ship in danger and his irresponsibility with his powers got him punished, but despite it all, he was optimistic about the human race.

CAPRICORN - DR. CRUSHER

Though Captain Picard was the commanding officer who sent her husband Jack Crusher on the away mission that would claim his life, Dr. Beverly Crusher still agreed to serve aboard his ship as the Chief Medical Officer. She became known for her firm but nurturing bedside manner during countless close calls aboard the  Enterprise- D.

Like most Capricorns, Dr. Crusher was prudent and practical, but she was prepared to think outside the box should a medical emergency call for imagination. She had a keen sense of humor and in her spare time often wrote plays for the crew to perform.

AQUARIUS - JEAN-LUC PICARD

The stalwart Captain of the  Enterprise-D,  who assumed command from the infamous Captain Kirk, was known as one of the finest officers in Starfleet. Favoring diplomacy over more aggressive tactics, he relied on open communication despite being an intensely private person. His greatest ability was seeing the best in others and challenging them to meet their expectations.

Despite his reserved outward demeanor, Picard was nothing if not cordial and urbane. Like most Aquarians, he preferred his independence, often choosing his own company and the pursuit of an intellectual curiosity or adventure. His integrity and loyalty were beyond repute and he would sacrifice anything for his crew.

PISCES - BARCLAY

Lieutenant Reginald Barclay often found himself trying to determine where he fit into the crew of the  Enterprise-D,  but his skill and expertise with various mechanical parts of the ship often saw him drifting between engineering and his personal pursuits on the holodeck.

Extremely sensitive to the opinions of his colleagues, Barclay wondered what they thought of him to such an extent it impacted his work. The only time his insecurities subsided is when he could be part of wild holodeck stories, where his imagination could be allowed to explore. Though he eventually used them to escape his reality, Counselor Troi eventually helped him find his will.

How Star Trek's Most Underrated Villains Wreaked Havoc From Deep Space 9 to Picard

Star Trek enemies like the Borg and Klingons have been a thorn on the Federation's side, but only one underrated villain has caused the most damage.

  • The Dominion is a powerful alien empire in Star Trek that challenged the Federation like never before.
  • While the Klingons, Romulans, and Borg evolved over time, the Dominion remained a second-tier villain.
  • Star Trek: Picard's third season saw the Dominion return strong, with a complex plot and characters.

Star Trek has always featured compelling villainous aliens, many of whom have arcs and collective journeys as rich as any individual character. The Klingons, for instance, have gone from the Federation's greatest foes to fierce allies and antiheroes. The Romulan Empire similarly underwent rapid disintegration in the late 24th century and re-unified with their genetic cousins, the Vulcans, in later seasons of Star Trek: Discovery . Even the Borg changed over the course of the franchise, as individuals like Seven of Nine escaped the Collective and threats like Species 8472 proved more than they could handle. That dedication to their organic development has helped make them truly memorable foes, not only in Star Trek , but in pop culture as a whole.

One villainous species tends to get a little lost in the shuffle, however. The Dominion -- a powerful alien empire controlled by shape-shifting Changelings -- proved to be one of the deadliest foes the Federation ever faced. They launched a war against the Alpha Quadrant during the final seasons of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, forcing Starfleet to join forces with traditional enemies like the Romulans in the face of the common threat. Despite that, the Dominion itself is often relegated to second-tier villain status. Star Trek: Picard's triumphant third season successfully returned them to the spotlight, and reminded fans how terrifying they could be as antagonists.

The Dominion Were Designed as an Existential Threat

The complete history of the klingons in star trek's next generation era.

Deep Space Nine cemented a big transition for the franchise, moving away from Gene Roddenberry's beliefs in an absolute utopia. A Federation devoid of conflict was no place to tell compelling stories, which The Original Series solved by presenting solely external threats in its planet-of-the-week format. Star Trek: The Next Generation successfully broke out of that mold, though its early seasons were plagued by problems caused by the infamous "Roddenberry Box" forbidding intrapersonal conflicts among the crew. The incursion of the Borg in Season 3, Episode 26, "The Best of Both Worlds, Part I" definitively broke the Box, with Will Riker taking command of the Enterprise amid constant head-butting from his de facto Number One, Elizabeth Shelby.

As The Next Generation continued to explore the story potential of protagonists with differing opinions, Deep Space Nine fully committed to the dark side of the 24th century. Set aboard a rickety former mining station near the planet Bajor, it looked for drama within the limits of the Federation's power, and how characters like Captain Benjamin Sisko have to sometimes make compromises for the greater good. The Dominion proved to be the perfect fulcrum for that as a technologically advanced fascist theocracy, ruled by the Changelings who condition their subjects to worship them as gods. Besides their technological advantages, the Dominion's military forces are truly terrifying.

The ground troops are genetically engineered constructs known as the Jem'Hadar; they are bred to be soldiers and physically dependent upon a chemical called ketracel white to ensure their absolute loyalty. Their commanders, administrators and tactical advisors are a species known as Vorta, who are preternaturally cunning and built to influence foes with honeyed words before unleashing the Dominion's full forces on them. Worst of all were the Changelings themselves, who could perfectly imitate anyone they wished and who would abduct key personnel and replace them with duplicates to sow distrust and discord. On top of all that, they had a vast empire of slave labor at their command, and with the Bajoran wormhole providing a conduit to the Alpha Quadrant, they potentially had the ability to overrun the Federation in a manner of days.

The Dominion Pushed the Moral Limits of The Federation

The complete history of vulcans in the federation era of star trek.

The Dominion were designed the way they were in order to push the Starfleet characters -- specifically Sisko -- into making compromised choices for the sake of survival . That included below-the-belt tactics such as mining the entrance to the wormhole to prevent any ships from getting through, and Section 31's use of biological warfare to infect the Changeling collective with a fatal virus. The most telling moment came with Season 6, Episode 19, " In the Pale Moonlight ," in which Sisko has a hand in forgery, duplicity and murder in order to bring the Romulans into the war.

It is perhaps Star Trek's darkest moment, and a canny exploration of the franchise's famous adage, "the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few." Sisko's efforts bore fruit, and the united Alpha Quadrant was finally able to push the Dominion and its allies to the point of capitulation at the end of Season 7. But the cost was terrible, with millions dead and vast regions of the Alpha Quadrant devastated by war . The Dominion retreated back to the other side of the wormhole, and Odo -- a wayward Changeling who helped convince his people to halt the fighting -- returned to the collective to help end their distrust of "the solids."

As antagonists, they worked incredibly well, thanks in part to a slow build-up that left their origins and motives in the dark until they were well into their infiltration of the Alpha Quadrant. They provided the ideal crucible to test the Federation's principles under fire. While Roddenberry's bright future survived, it emerged with scars that never quite healed. Not even the Borg could top the Dominion as foes, and fans have even gamed out a hypothetical conflict between the Dominion and the Borg, with more or less even odds on which species will prevail.

Despite that, their footprint in the franchise is much smaller than other major antagonists. They returned to the Gamma Quadrant after the war, and essentially vanished with the series finale of Deep Space Nine. With its sister series Star Trek: Voyager focusing on the Borg , and the follow-up Star Trek: Enterprise taking place centuries before the opening of the wormhole, there was no convenient way to resurrect them. The franchise simply moved on, and the Dominion was left collecting dust on the shelves.

Picard Gives The Dominion the Comeback They Deserve

How deep space nine elevated the ferengi from jokes to serious characters.

The latter-day Star Trek renaissance provided an opportunity to do something special with the Dominion. Picard Season 3 depicted a dying, vengeance-obsessed Borg queen pairing up with a radical faction of Changelings to take another run at destroying the Earth. They replace key Starfleet members and sabotage the transporters aboard most of its starships by infecting those who use it with a subtle hormone that allows the Borg Queen to take control of them remotely. The complex plot sees Picard and the reunited crew of the Enterprise-D work to uncover the truth before the sinister coalition springs its trap.

Beyond the cleverness of the plot and its borderline horror-movie premise, Amanda Plummer's Changeling Vadic cements herself as an instant fan favorite. She and her cohorts were captured and experimented on during the Dominion War, rendering them traumatized and filled with hate. Plummer always excels in eccentric roles, which feels like a being who hasn't quite mastered the art of humanoid emotional expression. She's manic, mercurial, and extremely bad at hiding the depths of her hatred.

While Vadic meets her just fate before seeing her plans come to fruition, her presence lingers in the series' final few episodes, to the point of outclassing the Borg Queen herself. She also gives a face to the Changelings, who were usually by definition disguised as someone else. Their representative (known only as "female Changeling") was presumptuous and cold, which forms a stark contrast with Vadic's onscreen villain. It demonstrates the effects of their defeat on the Dominion's self-styled god-rulers.

Picard helps the Dominion demonstrate a viable arc over time, in the same manner as the Klingons, the Romulans and the Borg. Fans can see how the loss has affected them as individuals, as well as the political fallout from it all. Vadic belongs to a splinter group rather than the bulk of the collective. It gives them the depth and sense of continuity they need to rightfully join the ranks of elite Star Trek villains . With Picard opening the door to further appearances, and with other antagonists suffering from decades of overuse, an extended return could help define the future of the franchise.
