15 Best Things to Do in San Antonio (Ibiza)

Best things to do in San Antonio, Ibiza

Are you looking for things to see and do in San Antonio (Sant Antoni de Portmany) , that don’t necessarily involve copious amounts of booze, banging clubs, and noisy bars?

As Europe’s premier party capital, many believe the whole of Ibiza Island is one of twelve-hour drinking sessions, noisy bars and clubs open throughout the night.

Although this analogy is still valid in some areas, things have changed significantly over the last 20 years.

San Antonio began life some two-thousand years ago as a rustic, sleepy little Spanish fishing village on the west coast of Ibiza. It remained that way, more or less, until the early 1960s, when the Spanish government began to realise there were some serious euros to be had from the hot Mediterranean sun.

As bars, clubs, and apartments mushroomed along the coast almost overnight, young 18-30 Brits, with a smattering of Germans and Italians, began to turn the island into the anything-goes party capital of Europe .

It was also a period when the island’s reputation began to suffer, with stories of drunken rowdiness, drug taking and fighting. As a result, tourist numbers began to drop off in favour of the other islands, where visitors could enjoy their sunshine holiday in quieter surroundings.

However, learning from their mistakes: since the early 1980s the authorities have worked hard to improve the situation. Although still the young party people’s favourite clubbing destination, Ibiza now concentrates on what it offers in other areas.

In this blog, for all who prefer a more varied holiday experience, I have compiled a list of the best things to do in San Antonio, from the best clubs to visit, to fabulous beaches, e-bike tours and exploring the coast by water.

1. Stroll the beautiful San Antonio Promenade

Best things to do in San Antonio, Ibiza: San Antonio Promenade

Having dropped your bags in the apartment, a stroll along San Antonio’s picturesque promenade should be high on your list of things to do in San Antonio.

Running from the northern end of San Antonio Town, the promenade meanders three or four kilometres around the Bay of San Antonio towards the marina and main port.

Although one of San Antonio’s busiest areas both day and night, it is a great walk to release the stress and tension that builds up on a long flight.

Wide, and planted with palms and succulents, you will stroll past beaches offering a variety of water activities , including paragliding, banana boats, fly-boarding, jet skis and pretty much every other water sport you can think of.

The shoreside is lined with touristy shops, children’s playgrounds , fountains that light up at night, and bars, restaurants and fast-food joints to suit every need and palate.

It’s a great place to help you decide what you want to do on your holiday and somewhere you will walk along numerous times during your stay.

2. Walk towards the port and visit the Coves Blanques lighthouse

Initially constructed on an uninhabited area of the San Antonio coast, the Coves Blanques lighthouse was commissioned in 1897. As the town’s urban sprawl spread along the coast, the lighthouse became a part of suburban San Antonio, and today is easily reached from the footpath at the base of the harbour’s breakwater.

Plagued with problems over the years, the lighthouse was finally decommissioned in 1963 and remained empty and neglected for over 50 years.

Rescued by the local council in the early 2000s, the lighthouse was fully refurbished and in 2010 opened as a cultural centre and exhibition hall , holding various cultural activities and exhibitions of all kinds throughout the year.

3. Look for things to do in San Antonio from your favourite beach

San Antonio Beach

For those visitors to the beautiful Balearic Islands who want nothing more than somewhere to lay their towel and soak up the rays, the nearest beach to the apartment will normally do.

For others, their best beach experience involves more than just sand, sea and sun. Is it safe for children? How noisy is it? Does it have good facilities and is it easily accessible with buggies?

With a stay in San Antonio, you have a good selection of beaches , all within easy walking distance. At first sight, all appear very similar, but dig a little deeper and you will find that strip of golden sand that will hit your particular spot.

Take your pick from these local beaches, or be a little more adventurous with a trip further around the coast to explore some of the best beaches in Ibiza .

Es Pouet beach: Off the main promenade, Es Pouet has it all. Facilities are good, with shops, bars and cafes, sun beds, parasols and lifeguards.

Disabled access is good, with amphibious wheelchairs available. Off the small jetty, local ferries take visitors further afield. You can hire boats and kayaks or ride on the banana boat. The water is shallow and safe for kids.

Playa S’Estanyol: Off the promenade, a little further around the coast. S’Estanyol beach comprises two small sandy coves with the usual shops, bars and cafes, sun beds, shades and lifeguards.

Several water sports are available, including inflatables and pedalos. Coastal waters are shallow and child friendly.

Playa Pinet: A little further along the coast will bring you to Pinet Beach. With a tree line to the rear of the beach blocking out the harsh concrete apartments, you will find cafes and bars on the beach, where your toes can play in the sand while you sip your pina colada.

Bars, cafes, shops and a small supermarket are by the beach. Sunbeds, shades, pedalos, paddleboards, banana boats and water skis are available. Shallow waters and a lifeguard make it safe for the little ones.

Playa Xinxo (Cala de Bou:) The last in the local group. All the usual facilities apply, including good access for disabled visitors. A strip of clean golden sand and shallow waters for some distance out make it safe for the kids. A range of water activities, including pedalos, are available.

Other amazing beaches near San Antonio are Cala Gracioneta, Cala Comte, Cala Salada and Cala Bassa.

4. Pay a visit to the Aquarium Cap Blanc

Head towards the northern end of San Antonio along the coastal path, and you will come across the Aquarium Cap Blanc.

Built originally in a large natural cave as a lobster hatchery, it was converted into a public aquarium in 1989, specialising in marine species from around the Ibizan coast.

It’s not only its setting in a water-hewn cave that makes it different. Inside, a walkway guides you around the exhibits where you can look down into open-top aquaria, much as if you were snorkelling.

Smaller species, Crustaceans etc, can be viewed through the glass in standard aquaria.

The aquarium is a member of CREM, a recovery network for injured marine species such as turtles, that are treated and rehabilitated before being released back into the wild.

It also undertakes educational activities with schools and colleges and offers internships to university students.

To round off your visit, the aquarium has a lovely terrace café area where you can enjoy grilled sardines with fresh local salad while you take in the beautiful views across the Bay of San Antonio. Definitely worth adding to your things to see in San Antonio list.

As you stroll the promenade, you will find plenty of trips advertised along the way. However, to be sure of getting what you want, pre-booking online is the best option , especially if holidaying in a group or family party.

6. Discover the real Ibiza on a quad, buggy, or scooter guided tour

Around San Antonio, you will find plenty of agents where you can hire everything from a car to a quad, a buggy, or an e-bike, and do your own thing.

To make the most of this idyllic island though, a guided tour is the way to go. Fully trained and experienced guides will lead you to some of the most memorable things you will see in San Antonio and the surrounding coast and countryside.

From the stunning Ibiza interior to beaches and coastal areas unreachable by car . Discover forests, cultivated groves, and villages where you can take time to enjoy a snack and drink.

7. Visit the Church of San Antonio

Best things to see in San Antonio de Portmany: San Antonio Church

Located just off the promenade as you head toward the port area, the church is the second oldest in Ibiza. It was built in 1305 by the Archbishop of Tarragona to serve the religious needs of the local population.

In the early 16th century, the coast was regularly plagued with marauding pirates, and the church was substantially fortified , including steel doors and cannons on the roof, to protect sheltering residents and repel any pirates who got too close.

The church is open most of the day, with a mass held at 19.00. Its collection of artefacts, statues and paintings also makes it worth visiting.

Other local places of worship include the Church of Sant Rafael, the underground Chapel of Sant Agnes to the north of the town on the Cala Salada road, and the small Chapel of Buscastell.

8. More things to do in San Antonio: View the cave paintings at Ses Fontanelles cave

Not the easiest attraction to reach , but if you have a passion for prehistoric cave paintings and magnificent views, it is an excursion well worth the effort.

From Cala Salada, the walk takes around one hour over a rough, rocky trail.

If you are considering renting a car, make it a 4×4. Once you leave the main tarmac, the rough track is strewn with rocks and potholes, but you can get close to the cliffs, leaving just a short hike to the cave .

Used back in the day as a wine cellar, the cave at Ses Fontanelles sits around 50 metres above the beach .

The paintings were discovered in 1917 by French archaeologist Henri Breuli and are thought to date back to the Punic era, around 200 BC.

Unfortunately, in recent years the entrance has been fenced off to protect the cave paintings from deterioration caused by human breath.

Nonetheless, you can still make out the paintings as you look into the cave and resin replicas have been placed around the entrance for closer examination.

It is also an excellent place to rest and eat your packed lunch, enjoying the stunning views across the bay and along the coast.

9. Sunset Strip – the place to be for the best sunsets in Ibiza

Pick up the promenade and head towards the port. Walk to the end of the harbour, pick up the steps off to the right, and you’re at the beginning of Sunset Strip .

The promenade is lined with café/bars and restaurants on the one side and tables and chairs on the sea side for visitors to enjoy a drink or meal as they photograph the setting sun.

You’ll find new bars such as Space Eat and Dance , Savannah, purporting to attract a more mature clientele, and old favourites from the 1980s, such as Café del Mar and Café Mambo, regularly crowned best bars on the island, that have stood the test of time.

Most of these vibrant bars hold pre-party parties. With DJs from all musical genres playing their sets, it gets very busy, so early arrival is recommended.

It’s a long promenade, and the further you walk it does get a little quieter, but only a little. Nonetheless, even if you’re not a party person, the fabulous sunsets and sheer vibrancy of the area mean you have to add at least one visit to your things to do in San Antonio list.

10. Dining out in San Antonio, Ibiza

One thing’s for sure, with fast-food joints on almost every corner, and most bars offering everything from a full-English to tapas plates, you won’t have a problem finding something to eat in San Antonio.

However, I have highlighted a few well established, quality restaurants for those looking for something a little more for that special occasion or family get-together.

Es Tragon – Nestling in a pine wooded area just a five-minute cab ride from San Antonio, Es Tragon restaurant is the island’s only Michelin star award winner. A great place to enjoy a taste of traditional Mediterranean fine dining, although you will pay a premium.

Rincon de Pepe Tapas Bar – Located in San Antonio town at Calle San Mateo, by Fountains Square, this restaurant opened in 1962. It is one of the town’s oldest restaurants specialising in Spanish tapas dishes, steaks, fish, shellfish and kebabs.

Rita’s Cantina – One of my favourites. Open from 08.00am to 01.00am. This is a great little bar for breakfast, brunch, lunch or snacks in a lovely setting by the marina.

La Cantina Canalla – If you have a taste for Latin American food, then this is worth visiting. Located at the bottom of West End, La Cantina Canalla is not a Mexican restaurant but Peruvian. If you’re not sure, ask for a tasting plate. Great food, reasonably priced and excellent service.

Relish – Located on the waterfront, Relish is a great venue to seek out your favourite comfort food. Open from 17.00 to 23.00, pick from pork belly and juicy burgers, steaks, curries and pasta, along with vegetarian and vegan options – all at very reasonable prices.

11. We’ll meet at El Huevo de Colón (The Egg of Columbus)

What to see in San Antonio: The Egg of Columbus

Located on the large roundabout at the entrance to San Antonio, the egg was unveiled in 1992, to celebrate the 500th anniversary of Columbus discovering America.

At 6 metres high, the egg has a hole through the centre holding a model of t he Santa Maria Caravel , the sailing ship Columbus skippered on his journey.

Easily located, the egg is often used as a meeting place for groups who get split up as they explore the town and surrounding area, and is one of the town’s most photographed attractions.

12. Check out the West End Party Venues to suit all pockets

Are you ready for a little hard-core partying? If you’ve previously visited the Sunset Strip, you’ve already got a foot on the party ladder.

The ‘West End’ is San Antonio’s main area for throbbing bars and pulsing clubs that draw party people like a magnet from as far afield as Ibiza Town and beyond.

The main zone begins around 100 metres from the beachfront and includes a few of the nearby smaller streets. The whole area is fully pedestrianised with themed bars and clubs catering for every musical genre you can think of – and some.

13. Go wild in San Antonio super clubs

Located close to the West End, two of San Antonio’s favourite super clubs are arguably Eden , reputed to have the best sound system on the island, with regularly changing DJs and genres. And Es Paradis , a club that dates back to the hedonistic party days of the 1970s.

It became famous (infamous?) for its renowned water parties, which it still continues today, and which regularly packs them in throughout the season.

If you can’t find what you want in San Antonio (which is highly unlikely), you can enjoy other super-clubs such as Amnesia, Pacha and Hi Ibiza . The journey takes around 20 minutes by cab, or you can catch the party bus from the main bus station every thirty minutes from midnight.

14. Enjoy daytime pool partying in an upmarket environment

Check out these two daytime venues if you prefer to avoid the large crowds but still like to party. Just don’t expect to pay €2 a pint or €6 for a cocktail.

Ibiza Rocks Hote l is located off the San Antonio promenade, with events and facilities open to resident and non-resident guests.

Listen to the latest hits from international stars such as Craig David, Joel Corry, Becky Hill and Fatboy Slim while enjoying your pool party. Event tickets are generally between €20 and €50, depending on the event.

Located on the seafront alongside the San Antonio promenade, O Beach Club opened in 2012 for a more discerning clientele.

On the terrace you can enjoy professionally curated cocktails as the party kicks off. Or just relax in one of the numerous hammocks or VIP tables around the pool area, while resident DJs spin nostalgic sets or the latest house music.

For over 18s only, the club opens at midday to 10.00pm, and entrance fees range from €20 to €40 depending on the event. Booking online will attract a discount.

15. Find a unique holiday souvenir in picturesque Sant Rafel de Sa Creu

If your body’s telling you it needs some time away from the sand, sea and crowded beaches, consider a few hours in Sant Rafel de Sa Creu.

This pretty village is located five miles inland from San Antonio. Just an eight-minute cab ride or 15 minutes by bus, it has, over the years, developed a reputation for its authentic, traditional gastronomy. That alone is enough reason for a visit, but there is much more to Sant Rafel de Sa Creu.

Since the 1970s, it has been attracting national and international ceramists, artisans, potters and artists to set up homes, workshops and studios. So much so that it has been declared a place of special artisan interest by the island council.

As you explore the village streets, you will find exhibition halls, Artisan workshops and studios where you can watch potters and ceramists producing their products, and browse the shelves for that totally unique memento.

Throughout the summer, on a Thursday morning, an Artisan market is set up on the main street, selling everything from pottery to ceramics, hand-made goods, paintings, clothing and woven baskets; and attracting many locals from the surrounding area.

So there we have it, 15 of the best things to see and do in San Antonio .

Top 5 Things to Do in San Antoni de Portmany

Hit up the sunset strip for sundowners .

Ibiza San Antonio

Seeing the sun go down from one of the many bars in San Antonio’s sunset strip is a rite of passage for anyone visiting Ibiza.

As the name suggests, the strip presents an unobstructed view of the setting sun – there’s pretty much nothing better than watching the last rays of the day with a cocktail in hand.

Hit up classic hotspots like Cafe Mambo – which has been going strong with its special blend of DJ sets and pre-parties since 1994 – or Cafe del Mar, the OG sunset bar best-known for its chilled out music sets and relaxed vibe.

Other popular bars on the strip include Savannah Beach Club, Mint Lounge and Golden Buddha.

Top Tip: Arrive early if you want to nab a seat, especially during peak season.

Party at Es Paradis

Tuck into a Japanese Feast at Okasan Restaurant

Okasan San Antonio Ibiza

I hate to play favourites (who am I kidding, I kinda love it) but Okasan was one of the real highlights of my most recent Ibiza trip.

The food is straight-up delicious – think of it as a little slice of Japan brought straight to San Antonio. That translates to mounds of perfectly-prepared sushi, sizzling robata grill delicacies and *perfectly* seasoned veg.

Okasan San Antonio Ibiza-7

When you throw in beautiful views of the harbour (definitely grab a table on the covered terrace if you can) and some stellar Japanese-inspired cocktails, you know you’re onto a winner.

Top Tip: It does book up, so reserve your table well in advance.

Go Beach Hopping

Cala Bassa

What better way to experience the best beaches in San Antonio, Ibiza, than a beach-hopping cruise ?

Cap Blanc Aquarium is not your average aquarium. You’ll get to watch a beautiful display of marine life on a trip to this unique, educational attraction. Colourful tropical fish and graceful rays glide through the water, showing off the best of the diverse species here.

Being in an underground cavern, a cool highlight of this trip is walking in its transparent underground tunnel and marvelling at the breathtaking underwater views surrounding you.

Aside from Es Paradis, other top spots include superclub Eden, with its crazy parties and pumping sound system, Ibiza Rocks Hotel, where the poolside gigs are always popping, O Beach and Plastik.

Go Scuba Diving

Sant Antoni de Portmany

Ibiza might not be the first place you think of when you think of scuba diving, but there’s some pretty cool dive spots dotted around the island.

The Sunset Strip is a famous beachfront promenade located about a 10-minute walk from the heart of San Antonio. As the name suggests, it’s THE place to watch the sunset in Ibiza. There are lots of lively bars and restaurants along the beachfront that host live music and DJs nightly, so you can enjoy your sunset with a cocktail in hand. Two of the most legendary options are Café Mambo (they do great burgers) and Café del Mar.

Take to the water

First, here’s a lowdown on the area’s beautiful beaches. S’Arenal Beach is the town’s main beach, with golden shores stretching far and wide (literally). There are five other smaller cove beaches along the coastline near San Antonio, but Cala des Moro is one of the best. Furthermore, a 45-minute walk from Invisa Es Pla is Punta Galera, a cove with rock platforms that’s a popular local cliff jumping spot. It’s also a great spot to watch the sunset and snorkel in crystal clear water.

From S’Arenal Beach, you can enjoy a variety of watersports, like jet-skiing, banana boat rides, parasailing, kayaking, scuba diving and kite-surfing. Top recommendations include Eden, Plastik Ibiza, Club Hush, which hosts some of the island’s best DJs, and Ibiza Rocks for live music. Now, you can easily spend your entire holiday soaking up the sunshine in San Antonio. However, there are many other Ibiza adventures waiting for you. First, Ibiza Town is only a short drive away. It’s home to a historic Old Town, unspoilt panoramic hilltop vistas and shopping boutiques.

Another option is to hire a bike. You can either ride around to San Antonio’s beautiful bay or journey inland to the rolling local hills Ibiza is known for. You can also opt to go on a quad bike or buggy sightseeing tour .

Eat a feast in San Antonio

San Antonio is not shy of a few amazing restaurants to dine at while staying in the area. When you’re craving something healthy, head to Bondi Restaurant. When you want fine dining with a view, visit Villa Mercedes Restaurant or enjoy Michelin-Star Mediterranean cuisine at Es Tragon. If you want to indulge in tapas, visit El Rincón de Pepe. Finally, Kumharas Ibiza is one of the island’s best restaurants and just so happens to be known for its sunset views. Enjoy the mouthwatering menu with a side of live flamenco and fire dancing.

What to see in San Antonio, much more than a party destination

Information

The town of San Antonio Abad ( Sant Antoni de Portmany , in Catalan) is found in the north-western part of the island, bordering the municipalities of San José (Sant Josep de Sa Talaia) *internal link, Ibiza Town and Santa Eulalia (Santa Eulària des Riu) . Its main population hub, also called San Antonio Abad , borders the Bay of San Antonio on the island’s western coastline and is one of Ibiza’s main tourist destinations. Since the 1970s, its vibrant bars and ‘superclubs’ have raised the international profile of this small coastal town.

Every summer, swathes of young tourists come from all over Europe to experience it for themselves. However, it is important to stress that San Antonio Abad is much more than a mere party destination. During your stay in the town you’ll be able to try your hand at different water sports, visit caverns bearing original cave art on their walls, go for a refreshing dip in the waters of its idyllic beaches and coves *internal link and admire its wonderfully preserved churches and lighthouses. If you’d like to know more, we suggest that you keep reading.

Things to see and do in Sant Antoni de Portmany

Three villages with ibizan charm, what awaits you in san antonio, nightlife in sant antoni de portmany, restaurants in san antonio, the bay of san antonio and its beautiful coves.

It is not uncommon for Sant Antoni de Portmany to only be associated with its municipal capital. For this reason, we are now going to shine a light on some of the lesser-known attractions found around this wonderful town.

Cap Blanc Aquarium

The cave of Cap Blanc is also known as “ Sa Cova de ses Llagostes ”, due to the fact that it once served as a lobster nursery. Located just a couple of kilometres north of San Antonio, it was converted into an aquarium in 1989. Nowadays, it offers visitors a unique opportunity to get up close and personal with some of the most emblematic species of the Ibizan Mediterranean. It also organises “ sardinada ” events every weekend, where attendees can sample Ibizan-style grilled sardines and payés salads as they soak up the gorgeous sea views.

Playa de San Antonio, Ibiza

Playa de San Antonio, Ibiza

Ses Fontanelles cave

By following the coastline northwards you’ll end up at La Cova de Ses Fontenelles, where French archaeologist Henri Breuil discovered original cave paintings back in 1917. Often referred to by locals as la Cueva del Vino due to the fact that it once served as a rustic wine cellar, its walls still preserve traces that date back to the Punic period. As you make your way to this unique cave you’ll be able to enjoy unparalleled views across the Bay of San Antonio and, in the distance, the 11 islets of Poniente.

If you’re planning on coming to the inland part of the island (and Sant Antoni in particular), you’ll be able to visit several quintessentially Ibizan towns and villages. Let’s take a look at three:

Sant Rafael de Sa Creu

This peaceful village, which lies to the south of the municipality and on the border with Ibiza Town, is considered by many to be one of the first settlements on the island. We particularly recommend visiting its beautiful church and its famous craft market, which runs every Thursday.

San Mateo de Albarca

sant mateo de Albarca

Iglesia de San Mateo.

Slightly to the north is the village of San Mateo, which is dotted with small family-run wineries which run their own wine tasting sessions. Sa Cova and Bodegas Can Maymó are two such examples.

Santa Agnés de Corona

Even more to the north, surrounded by fields of almond trees, is the village of Santa Agnés de Corona (known as Santa Inés, in Spanish). We recommend taking the hiking trail from the village to the Las Puertas del Cielo viewpoint , which offers breathtaking views across the sea and surrounding cliffs.

Let’s take a look at some of the main attractions that await you in San Antonio Abad.

Sant Antonio church and the Coves Blanques lighthouse

Before embracing San Antonio’s famous festive atmosphere, why not visit some of its cultural and historical landmarks? We recommend heading to the old town to visit the San Antonio church : a fortress-temple that was originally built in 1385 to defend the town from pirate invasions, which were commonplace at the time. Another of its main tourist attractions is the Coves Blanques lighthouse , which was built in the late 19th century and stands close to the beachfront promenade. Nowadays, its interior is used as an exhibition hall.

As you might expect, there are hundreds of ways to enjoy yourself after dark in Sant Antoni de Portmany. Boat parties are particularly popular, with many companies organising these group events. The price for these trips often includes entrance to one of the area’s large nightclubs at night. Two of the most popular ones are Edén and Es Paradís , which are in the inland part of the city. Amnesia Ibiza and Privilege Ibiza are also just a 15-minute drive from the town centre.

Fiesta en San Antonio, Ibiza.

La noche es joven…

We also recommend visiting the so-called West End of San Antonio , which is found in the heart of the old town. This district of pedestrianised streets becomes a veritable hotbed of tourists ― predominantly British― once the sun goes down. This lively area is brimming with reasonably-priced bars, pubs and small nightclubs, hence its popularity amongst visitors.

If you’re looking to get the party started while the sun is still shining, there’s no better place than the Sunset Strip : a stretch of the flowery beachfront promenade where you will find some of Sant Antoni’s most legendary bars. Two such examples are Café Mambo and Café del Mar , which are renowned for their unforgettable chill-out sessions and the spectacular views of the famous Ibizan sunset  that can be enjoyed from its terraces.

Delicious local cuisine is another of the main pillars that sustain this coastal town’s roaring success. The beachfront promenade, for example, is home to a wide range of bars and restaurants with diverse and vibrant menus. Villa Mercedes , for example, offers live music sessions and Mediterranean fusion cooking in an old house which overlooks the Port of San Antonio. Mint Lounge Bar, Fresh Ibiza and Savannah , all located on the Sunset Strip, also allow diners to enjoy their dinner as they gaze out at a spectacular Ibizan sunset.

Other excellent dining establishments are found in the town’s historic centre, such as El Rincón de Pepe , famed for its delicious tapas dishes; and the Restaurante Es Ventall , renowned for the quality of the ingredients grown in the local vegetable garden, which are cooked in a wood-fired oven.

We simply must mention the beautiful beaches and coves that punctuate the western Ibizan coastline, with the San Antonio area being a particularly spectacular stretch. Let’s take a look at some of them:

Playa de S’Arenal (or playa de San Antonio)

This is the main beach in Sant Antoni de Portmany and one of Ibiza’s only urban beaches. Without having a main attraction, the Playa de S’Arenal has a series of key benefits: it can be accessed by people of all ages and mobilities; it has all the basic facilities required for a day at the beach; you don’t need to travel to get there; and it is possible to try a wide range of exciting activities, such as renting a jet-ski or trying your hand at surfing, windsurfing or diving.

Playa de S´Arenal

Playa de S´Arenal

Playa de Cala Gració and cala Gracioneta

Lying to the north of Sant Antoni de Portmany are two small and charming coves. While there are parking facilities nearby, we recommend travelling to these coves by foot. Cala Gració is the perfect spot for families travelling with kids . Its neighbouring Cala Gracioneta , meanwhile, home to the famous El Chiringuito restaurant , is a hotspot for nudists.

Cala Gració.

La fantástica Cala Gració.

Cala Salada and cala Saladeta

If you continue to hug the coastline as you head further north you’ll reach these two secluded coves, notable for their shimmering waters and fine golden sands. Difficult to access, the small inlet that houses Cala Salada and Cala Saladeta is a regular stop-off point for the many boat trips  that depart from Sant Antoni de Portmany on a daily basis. Nearby you can also visit Punta Galera , a narrow spit of smooth rock that extends into the sea, offering beachgoers a platform from which they can launch themselves into the water. Its characteristics also make it very popular amongst nudists.

Have you chosen San Antonio as the place to stay on your forthcoming visit to Ibiza?

The island has a wide variety of idyllic spots that are well worth a visit. San Antonio is one of the island’s most touristic towns with something to suit all tastes. Its amazing nightlife, cultural attractions, routes through the countryside and sea trips will all make a marvellous impact on you.

In this blog, we’ll tell you everything you need to know to make the most of your visit to this famous part of the island!

San Antonio de Portmany is in the west of Ibiza, where some of its loveliest beaches can be found, with stunning sunsets. For those in search of nightlife and clubbing, San Antonio is the place for you! The price of accommodation in the town is more reasonable and it’s the perfect starting point for exploring some of the places we’ll tell you about now.

1. ‘Columbus’ Egg’: a striking monument

If you travel to San Antonio by car, bus or motorbike along the C-731, in the direction of the sea, you’ll come to a roundabout with a famous monument in the middle, known as ‘Columbus’ Egg’, which commemorates the discovery of America.  The monument was made by local artists and, inside, it features a replica of the Santa María, with the ship’s bow pointing to America.

Right next to the roundabout is Vibra District Hotel, an adults-only hotel refurbished last year, with charming views of ‘Columbus’ Egg’ and San Antonio Bay.

The most fun-packed hotel in the area, with stunning décor and a red pool with a vibrant atmosphere not to be missed!

2. Enjoy a well-deserved dip in the sea at S’Arenal Beach

S’Arenal Beach’s white sands and shallow waters are just a stone’s throw from Vibra District Hotel and ‘Columbus’ Egg’: perfect for a swim before you set off to visit the attractions.  From the jetty on the beach, you can take a boat trip or hire paddle surf equipment and kayaks.  People flock to this area in the evening to watch the sunset from the beach, hotel terrace or one of the bars just a few metres from the beach.

3. San Antonio waterfront promenade

As evening draws near, we recommend a stroll along the Paseo Marítimo (the waterfront promenade) from the harbour to Caló des Moro, a small sandy cove beyond the bay, passing famous bars and restaurants along the way, like the legendary Café del Mar , where you can wait for the sun to go down to the accompaniment of the best chill-out music.

4. An unforgettable evening sunset in San Antonio

As we mentioned above, Café del Mar is a well-known port-of-call, visited by lots of people wishing to watch the sun set.  If you come in the high season, you’ll need to book well in advance because its terrace and the promenade just in front of it fill up with people each evening.

If you prefer, you can join the people sitting on the rocks just in front or on the terraces of Café Mambo or Savannah Beach Club. The rocks, with their magical atmosphere, are a good place to sit.

5. Boat trips from San Antonio

On the different boat trips that leave from San Antonio, lots of charming coves and other spots with crystal-clear waters can be visited.  We’ll name a few that you really shouldn’t miss out on.

The boats normally depart from the harbour next to the Paseo Marítimo. There are boat trips to Formentera, where you can spend the day doing aquatic activities, like snorkelling, or simply stroll along its beaches of white sands.  This is usually a lively outing with chill-out music during the boat trip. Some also organize an onboard paella. Formentera will leave a lasting impression on you. Make sure you go there!

Other outings that are well worth doing are the boat trips to Cala Bassa and Cala Conta, where you can also go paddle surfing or bathe in the waters of these celebrated idyllic coves.  Some of the trips are in catamarans able to hold up to 150 people, with an open bar and, needless to say, music.

One of the most popular boat trips is to Es Vedrà, because the approach to the little island, with its 382 metre sheer cliff, is truly amazing!  This is an island bathed in mystery and it’s bound to captivate you.

There are also boat trips to Cala Saladeta and Ses Margalides, an unspoilt archipelago where the boat anchors so that you gaze in wonder at the numerous different species of fish and the marine fauna.

If you prefer to sail under your own steam, you can pander to your whims and hire a boat or a jet-ski

6. Visits to Cala Salada and Cala Saladeta

If you’ve got a car, you can start off by visiting Cala Gració and Cala Gracioneta and, once you’ve had a swim there, carry on to Cala Salada and Cala Saladeta, which are just 15 minutes away by car.  The waters of these beaches are perfect for snorkelling!

Don’t miss out on them–they’re also very popular with the locals.  Cala Salada has a number of boathouses and old jetties with moorings, typically found on some of Ibiza’s beaches. These beaches tend to attract quite a lot of people, but if you walk along the path by the seashore, over a rocky cliff, you’ll come to a much more secluded beach than the others called Cala Saladeta, with turquoise waters. On the way from one beach to the other, you can also enjoy the lush vegetation so typical of Ibiza.

7. Visits to Platges de Comte

Another visit not to be missed is to Platges de Comte. This is just 15 minutes from San Antonio by car or motorbike. These beaches, with their white sands and turquoise waters, look out toward the little islands of Es Bosc, Sa Conillera, Ses Bledes and S’Espartar. They’re so striking that you’ll be left truly spellbound.

They also have a brilliant beach bar where you can have a drink or else you can dine at Es Racó d’en Xic Restaurant as you watch the spectacular setting sun.

8. Sant Antoni Church and Sa Punta des Molí Cultural Centre

In San Antonio, you can take a stroll through the town centre, with its numerous different restaurants, pubs and shops.  You can also visit Sant Antoni Church, Ibiza’s second oldest church and a place well worth seeing.  This 14th century monument has an imposing defensive tower that was also used as a place of worship and as a fortress to defend the town from pirates. Inside, you can see a large courtyard and the reredoses of Saint Roch and Our Lady of the Rosary, together with a 17th century statue of  Saint Vicent Ferrer .

At the end of S’Arenal Beach, in the middle of Portmany bay, stands Sa Punta des Molí Cultural Centre–another good place to visit in San Antonio.

places to visit san antonio ibiza

It features a traditional flour mill, an olive oil press, a noria, an open-air auditorium, a Mediterranean botanical garden and some boathouses.  The centre also has an exhibition where you can gain an insight into Ibiza’s history, way of life and traditions. What better way to get to know San Antonio’s history!

9. Partying in San Antonio

If you’re keen on partying and nightlife, as well as the places we mentioned earlier for having a drink and watching the sun set, such as Café del Mar, Savannah, Golden Buddha and Café Mambo, with their more relaxed atmosphere and music, we’ll tell you some of the nightclubs that attract fans of dance, techno and electronic music.

Es Paradis is a beachfront club where the famous Water and SuperMartXé Parties are held. It stands just opposite Edén, another of the island’s top venues.

Another alternative is to go pub crawling along the streets of the West End, all close to Calle de Santa Agnés, with their buzzing atmosphere in summer.

There are other clubs on the outskirts of San Antonio, such as the legendary Amnesia . This is an absolute must for visitors, on the San Antonio-Ibiza road, just 15 minutes away by car, bus, or taxi.

10. Where to stay in San Antonio

Bear in mind that the price of accommodation is higher in summer on the island of Ibiza so it’s important to book months ahead to get a good price. You can find cheaper accommodation in San Antonio de Portmany than in other areas of the island, for instance at Hostal Can Beia , in a quiet area of the town.

Another two well-located places to stay, offering excellent value for money, are both run by Vibra Hotels , which owns several hotels and apartments in San Antonio and San Antonio Bay. You’ll love the atmosphere and their warm, friendly staff! They also have some brilliant special offers, such as discounts of up to 30% on their website for the week from April 18th to 24th .  If you choose their refundable rate, you can cancel your booking, and if you register with Club Vibra , you’ll be entitled to some brilliant discounts on car hire, bars and restaurants, among others. An opportunity not to be missed!

Ibiza Town vs San Antonio: Which Is Better?

Ibiza Town or San Antonio? That’s like deciding on Maradona or Pele, Schumacher or Hamilton and even Pacha vs Privilege. Both are solid choices to spend your holiday in Ibiza. It is also a common question amongst Ibiza first-timers.

cafe-mambo-san-antonio-ibiza

But how should you decide? Well, let’s start by breaking the answer up into three (3) questions:

  • First, what daytime entertainment is on offer?
  • Which has the better variety of nightlife?
  • Third, who has the better location, convenience and accommodation options?

So without further delay let’s find out which is better and where you should stay. Let’s begin!

😎 Daytime entertainment

Both areas have plenty to offer, whether you’re after poolside shenanigans, lazy days on the beach, sipping designer cocktails in the sun or a day trip nearby.

A significant difference between the two areas is the tourist that typically stays in each. San Antonio is known for having predominantly young people, while Ibiza Town attracts a more mixed crowd.

San Antonio

It is located on the Western side of the island. The world-famous sunset strip is home to the likes of Café del Mar and Café Mambo . And the Punta des Moli offers a plethora of daytime fun to visitors.

The long stretch of beachfront has an extensive list of water sports and activities that should keep you entertained for ages., including:

🚤 Jet ski excursions 🛶Kayaking & Stand Up Paddling (SUP) 🪂 Parasailing 🥳 Boat trips & parties

San Antonio Bay also offers a great selection of day clubs, beach bars and restaurants. The likes of Ocean Beach provide some of the finest daytime live entertainment on the island, and their pool parties are the stuff of legend.

If you are on a stricter budget, then the town of San Antonio itself has more than enough choice to grab some food and some of the more generous alcohol deals on the island.

Top Things To Do In San Antonio

Top Things To Do In San Antonio

The locals call it Eivissa, and it’s on the Sothern side of the island. Ibiza Town is quite different from San Antonio and is generally more upmarket.

The port is the central ferry point between the other small islands, such as Formentera. Therefore, making the crossing to Formentera for a day trip is worth it and a highly recommended one.

The old town is full of quaint boutique shops, gourmet coffee shops and small delicatessens. Unfortunately, however, the town itself isn’t located on a beachfront.

You’ll need to make the short drive (or long walk) to Playa d’en Bossa , the largest beach on the island and party central of Ibiza .

During the day, there is plenty of action along the Playa d’en Bossa promenade. Which has well-known spots like Bora Bora offering daytime parties along the beachfront.

🏆 Winner for daytime – San Antonio

🪩 Nightlife

You’d be correct if you think it’s Ibiza, so it doesn’t matter where you stay. However, things are more nuanced than that, and nightlife extends beyond just Ibiza’s nightclubs .

Nightlife in San Antonio

The recent changes to the noise regulations by the local council have battered San Antonio , which means that the days of clubbing well past sunrise are a thing of the past in San Antonio.

However, you can get your fix of nocturnal adventures in Eden and Es Paradis , and a little way out of town, there is Pikes Hotel (venue for Freddy Mercury’s 41st birthday bash).

The sunset vibes at Café Mambo provide the precursor to the storied long nights of festivities that Ibiza is famous for.

If you feel extra frisky, you can drink yourself into next week on cheap fishbowls and Jagermeister along Carrer de Santa Agnès .

Nightlife in Ibiza town

pacha ibiza solomun plus one closing party

The town undergoes a pretty transformation as the sun gives way to the night skies. Dalt Vila becomes illuminated above the old town centre, and the relaxed daytime atmosphere becomes busy.

Along the waterfront, you’ll find many restaurants and chic bars to have a prematch cocktail before heading into one of the nightclubs.

Ibiza town is home to Lio , Pacha and Club Chinois. And with the less restrictive noise laws in the area, they can keep the party going until 06.00 each morning. Unfortunately, nowhere in Ibiza can do better than this currently.

Playa d’en Bossa makes the nighttime offering even more appealing when you consider it’s where you can find Hi Ibiza, Ushuaia, DC-10, Octan and SAWG .

🏆 Winner for nightlife – Ibiza Town

📍 Location, convenience and accommodation

Ibiza Town is a short 5-10 minute drive/taxi from the airport, while San Antonio will take you any from 20-25 minutes to get to. This journey time will be considerably longer in peak summer due to traffic.

San Antonio San Antonio is a more resort-focused town with scores of hotels to book but is somewhat limited in other accommodation types.

The West End of Ibiza is full of beautiful places, and San Antonio Bay is a great place to stay if you want to discover hidden coves and beaches. Exploring this part of the island and experiencing a magical sunset is easy to do from San Antonio.

Read Next: Whats is San Antonio Bay Like?

Ibiza Town If you include Playa d’en Bossa, then Ibiza Town has a better spread of hotels, apartments, and even villas to book.

But to experience the island’s beautiful surroundings and the best beaches, you’ll need to make more effort. Some must-see attractions like Cala Comte and Cala Tarida take considerably longer to reach if you stay in Ibiza Town or Playa d’en Bossa.

🏆 Winner for Location – San Antonio

San Antonio Hotels

Both the beachfront along the bay and the town itself have plenty of hotel choices. Prices are generally cheaper than in other areas of Ibiza as long as you book far enough in advance.

To help break it down further, here are some excellent choices in terms of luxury, budget and party hotels .

💎 Recommended Luxury Hotel: Paradiso Ibiza Art Hotel 💶 Recommended Budget Hotel: Sol Bahía Ibiza Suites 🥳 Recommended Party Hotel: Ibiza Rocks

Ibiza Town Hotels

If you plan to stay in Ibiza Town for your holiday, higher prices are found along the yacht marina and Talamanca side. And the friendly budget options are closer to Playa d’en Bossa.

💎 Recommended Luxury Hotel: Boas Ibiza Experience 💶 Recommended Budget Hotel: Jet Apartments 🥳 Recommeded Party Hotel: Ushuaia Ibiza Beach Hotel

🏆 Winner for convenience & accommodation – Ibiza town

🗝️ Key Takeaways

Well, that turned out to be extremely close. And by the narrowest of margins, I’ve given the nod to Ibiza Town by a score of 3-2 .

There isn’t that much to separate the two, and Ibiza Town edges it based on more accommodation variety and a better nightlife experience .

So if you are a first-timer planning an Ibiza pilgrimage, this article has hopefully helped lay out the benefits of staying in either.

However, be warned that it’s highly likely that after you spend your first holiday here, you’ll fall in love with Ibiza and want to visit again. That means you can stay in both and experience the best of each!

Your next home is just a tap away

1. property taxes.

If you’re moving to San Antonio and planning to buy a home, be aware that San Antonio has the highest property taxes in the country. If you’re interested in buying a home, use a mortgage calculator to estimate your monthly mortgage payment, including principal and interest, taxes, insurance, and more.

2. Cedar fever

San Antonio residents are familiar with the seasonal challenge known as cedar fever, a particularly intense allergic reaction triggered by the pollination of mountain cedar trees in the surrounding region. Typically occurring from December to February, cedar fever brings about symptoms such as sneezing, congestion, itchy eyes, and fatigue, affecting a significant portion of the population. The prevalence of mountain cedar in the Texas Hill Country exacerbates the issue, making this period a challenging time for allergy sufferers. Coping strategies range from over-the-counter remedies to minimizing outdoor activities during peak cedar pollen times.

3. Summer heat

San Antonio, TX, is synonymous with scorching summer temperatures that characterize the city’s climate. With average highs often surpassing 90°F (32°C) and occasionally soaring well into the triple digits, the summer months bring an intense heat that defines the Texan experience. The extended periods of high temperatures underscore the importance of staying hydrated and adopting heat-savvy practices.

4. Invasive wildlife

San Antonio grapples with invasive wildlife, notably fire ants, whose aggressive nature and painful stings create persistent challenges for residents. The city also contends with venomous snakes like the Western Diamondback Rattlesnake and Copperhead, posing safety concerns in suburban and rural areas. While these creatures contribute to the local ecosystem, residents must stay vigilant to coexist harmoniously with San Antonio’s diverse yet sometimes challenging wildlife.

5. Traffic congestion

San Antonio contends with notable traffic congestion, a challenge exacerbated by the city’s rapid growth and a heavy reliance on personal vehicles. Rush hours often result in extensive delays on the network of highways and roads, affecting both commuters and residents. The city’s sprawling layout and increasing population contribute to the congestion, prompting ongoing efforts to enhance public transportation options and alleviate the strain on roadways. As San Antonio grapples with the complexities of urban development, addressing and mitigating traffic congestion remains a key priority to enhance the overall quality of life for its residents.

Is San Antonio, TX a good place to live? Final thoughts

Living in San Antonio offers a multifaceted experience, blending benefits such as no state income tax, an affordable lifestyle, and a diverse food scene.
