Jeep recovered after tumble off cliff that killed tour driver, 2 Arizona women
By Logan Smith
September 18, 2022 / 4:00 PM MDT / CBS Colorado
A 2022 Jeep Gladiator was lifted by a heavy duty tow truck from the canyon floor back to Camp Bird Road on Tuesday afternoon, the day after it slid from the road in an accident that killed its local driver and two women from Arizona who were on a commercial tour.
The crash occurred Monday before noon, according to the Colorado State Patrol. The three were returning from Yankee Boy Basin.
Donald Fehd, 72, of Ouray, was at the wheel. The Jeep went off the right side of the road, fell 110 feet to the bottom of a cliff, then rolled another 150 feet an unknown number of times, CSP Sgt. Troy Kressler told CBS4. The vehicle landed on its roof near the bank of Canyon Creek.
Fehd was ejected during the crash. His passengers, 28-year-old Diana Diana Robles and her aunt, 60-year-old Ofelia Figueroa-Perez, were wearing their seat belts and remained inside the vehicle. Both women were from Yuma, Arizona.
All three were pronounced deceased at the scene.
Fehd was driving for Colorado West Jeep Rentals and Tours of Ouray. The scenic tour began at 8 a.m. Monday and was scheduled to end at noon, Kressler said.
According to the Ouray County Plaindealer , Fehd also drove and volunteered for the Ouray Mountain Rescue Team.
The team confirmed that detail in a Facebook post, and added, "Bringing Don back to Ouray after the accident was a high honor and a great burden that all team members carry in our hearts. Our deepest condolences go out to his family and the families of the other victims from the accident. Don will be seriously missed by a grateful team."
Kressler said CSP investigators are still trying to determine exactly how and why the vehicle left the road. Neither drugs, alcohol, nor excessive are suspected factors, he added.
Logan Smith is an assignment desk editor and former photojournalist and editor for CBS Colorado with more than 30 years of journalism experience in print and television media.

Taking a Sedona Pink Jeep tour
- Experiences , Travel Tips
- Feb 4, 2019
If you look up things to do in Sedona, Arizona, a Pink Jeep tour will likely pop up a the top of the list. And after doing one, I highly recommend giving it a try! Here’s everything you need to know before you head out.
You may be reading the Pink Adventure Tours website and thinking that, “Sedona’s most extreme off-road adventure” sounds a little intense for you. I’ll admit, I googled, “is Sedona pink jeep tour scary” before buying my tickets, too (and I’d already DONE IT once as a teenager).
The thing to remember here is that “Sedona’s most extreme” is a relative term. And if you’ve spent any time in Sedona, you know it’s not that “extreme” of a place. It’s more of a, “morning yoga followed by the spa followed by visiting a vortex to practice spirituality or search for healing” kind of place, where the average tourist age seems to be upward of 50. In short: do not worry. The jeeps drive very slowly, and while they do go over rocks at some crazy angles, they don’t do it near the edge of a cliff. You will not feel unsafe during this trip and if you think you’re going to, they’ll likely have you sit up front with the driver to help calm your nerves. Personally, I would put the “exhilaration” factor close to 0%, but that’s just me.
BUYING TICKETS
It’s super easy to buy tickets for the Sedona pink jeep tour from the Pink Adventure Tours website , but we also had a kiosk in the lobby of our hotel that sold tickets, so we bought them that way. I wouldn’t be surprised if concierges around the city were able to do the same! We did not pay an upcharge for booking that way; tickets were $115 per adult.
GETTING THERE AND PARKING
While the jeeps will do pickups at some hotels (our car did one at the Kimpton Amara), most people drive themselves to the tour start at the company’s office at 204 N State Rte 89A. There’s plenty of free parking across the street (as well as a Starbucks nearby if you want to grab something before you head out). The company asks that you arrive well in advance of your tour start—we went about 30 minutes beforehand—so that they can assign you to your jeep and driver, so factor that in when making your plans!
BROKEN ARROW TOUR
The Broken Arrow tour is the most popular pink jeep route, and it’s the one I recommend for first-timers. You’ll drive through the red rocks, seeing a variety of different landscapes, going on some “thrilling” inclines and making three stops where you can get out, walk around and take pictures. The tour lasts about two hours, which to me felt like the perfect duration. Guides are extremely knowledgeable and will provide history, facts on local flora and fauna and more. They’re happy to answer any questions about Sedona and the surrounding area, too!
WHAT TO WEAR ON A SEDONA PINK JEEP TOUR
This is where I wish I’d known that we’d be getting out and hiking around. I wore open-back shoes and immediately regretted it as soon as I found out we’d be making stops. Wear athletic shoes if you can!
Aside from correct footwear, I’d also recommend layers if you’re going in the winter like we did . But during the warmer months, it won’t be an issue!
I paid for our tickets using my Citi ThankYou Premier card, which earns a 2x bonus on all entertainment purchases. The tickets indeed coded under the entertainment umbrella; Citi categorized them as “miscellaneous amusement/recreation services.” The cash-averse should also take note that you can trip your driver on your credit card after your tour. Just head back inside to the main desk and tell them how much you’d like to add!

2 dead, 3 injured in east Texas crash involving 2 semis, SUV
MARION COUNTY, Texas (KSLA) - Two people are dead and three have been injured after a three-vehicle wreck in Marion County.
The Texas Department of Public Safety says it happened Monday, July 3 just before 9 a.m. on US 59 at FM 2208 about a mile south of Jefferson. Officials say preliminary details show Jasmine Griffin, 25, of Jefferson, was driving a 2015 Dodge Journey west on FM 2208 as a 58-year-old man from Douglassville was driving a 2005 Freightliner tractor trailer north on US 59.
A third vehicle (2015 Peterbilt tractor trailer), being driven by a 61-year-old man from Pittsburg, Texas, was headed south on US 59. Authorities say Griffin drove into the intersection and collided with 18-wheeler, causing it to roll over onto its side. After rolling over, the 18-wheeler slid and hit the other 18-wheeler.
Two people in the Dodge Journey were killed. They are Griffin and one of her passengers, Eddie Bell, 32, of Marshall. Griffin was pronounced dead on the scene, while Bell was taken to Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport, where he died a few hours later. A 5-year-old girl in their car sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to CHRISTUS in Marshall for treatment. All three of them were wearing their seat belts.
Both 18-wheeler drivers sustained “incapacitating” injuries and were taken to CHRISTUS in Longview for treatment. They were both also wearing their seat belts.
The investigation into the deadly wreck is ongoing.

Pink Jeep Tours Sedona Questions & Answers
May take the Pink Jeep Tour, but concerned as we have back issues...How bumpy is it??? Which tour is the least bumpy? How safe are they and what is the accident record??/
Hi Joa. Good question for those of us with bad problems. Not knowing the severity of your injury, I would suggest NOT doing the off-pavement tours. That said, I have had 4 major mc accidents involving 3 knee surgeries and back injury, 2 shoulder surgeries and countless contusions over the years and I took the most adventurous excursion and had a wonderful time. You do get bounced around A LOT but I was nice. I also sat in the front passenger seat 1/2 the tour so I wasn't bounced as much as my family. Only you know what you can and can not take.
I do not know the safety record of The Pink Jeep Tour Co but I know accidents do and have happened. Anytime you are driving/riding off-road, accidents/situations can happen. I know the drivers are professional drivers and take the safety of their passengers seriously.
I and my family had a GREAT time and I highly recommend this company. This is my 2nd excursion with them. Had a BLAST the first time too
No real idea on their safety records. We went with Disney so we trust that things are as safe as possible. Pink Jeep is bumpy and jarring. The front seat next to driver would be the least bumpy. The ATV is not very bumpy at least the trail we were on. I would do the ATV if it was me, I enjoyed it the most.
We felt safe at all times—but it is bumpy! Maybe the trolley tour might be safer with back issues.
Honestly, the tour we took wasn't too bad, the driver goes quite slow over the larger bumps and there are times you have hold the grab handles because the terrain is steep and uneven. It's worth the bump you do encounter as the views are incredible.
The Pink Jeep tour we too was of the South Rim and we were on paved road the entire time. No bumps at all.
The tour I took had some bounce to it. Not too bad but I would call them to ask about this one if you have back issues. The driver is highly qualified and their safety record is very good. Not sure this helps.
There are 4 levels of the ride. 1 and 2 should be okay. THE 3RD IS ROUGH. If only one has a bad back you can tell them and sit in the front with the driver. That's what my girlfriend did and i was in the back with other passengers.. Still have seatbelts all around. Don't even consider #4.
We took the pavement only tour. While you don't get back to the awesome views, you do get a great tour with some great information about other sites like the Sedona airport area. Great info on the area in general.
It is bumpy. My husband has back issues, but not severe. I would call the company and ask them. I feel they have an excellent safety record. I felt the driver was very qualified.
Pink Jeep is certainly focussed on safety we experienced. The more in the back of the Jeep you are seated, the bumpier it gets. Best to be riding shotgun if you have back issues.

I tipped $25 for the two of us. Considering I had a 10% off coupon for the tour, and it saved me $15, the tip really only cost me an extra $10.
