I have a holiday to Tenerife booked for November with TUI. I've decided to cancel and lose deposit we have paid (£100) so I don't have to pay £300 next month and balance of around £2000 in September. I thought I'd lose the £100 but trying to cancel online it looks like they say it's the 'full' deposit of £400. I hold my hands up entirely and didn't read the small print but is this correct? Don't rate my chances of actually talking to someone!
I had to remove a person from my booking previously and thought I'd only lose the first part of the deposit that had already been paid (£50) but no, I actually had to pay the rest of their deposit before I could cancel so yes I think you'll lose the £400 sadly.
@moveandmove thank you for your reply. It sounds like a lesson learned sadly. But I don't want to TUI to have over £2000 of my money for a holiday that won't happen 🙈
If you cancel you'll lose the full deposit not the low one. Just wait until it's cancelled and get it all back if you can afford to wait.
@IGottaGetOuttaThisPlace thank you. They already have £3000 of my money for a holiday supposed to happen next week which is rearranged. I really don't want another £2000+ paid but will have to decide if we can lose £400
You will have to pay the £300 before you can cancel Why not change to 2021
Hi, there’s a thread with a few of us on who aren’t happy with tui’s non-transparent low deposit scheme and don’t want to pay more money for something that will be cancelled in order to get our money back. I’m not paying any more than the £200 low deposit I paid for a holiday in August that I’m certain won’t happen. It would cost mean extra £600 to cancel. At the moment I’m just not paying and ignoring reminder emails. They can have my £200 but I’m not paying any more.
I think tui’s ‘low deposit’ scheme is misleading because it’s not a low deposit, it’s a partial deposit which isn’t made clear when you book. I believe a holiday company can only charge a reasonable amount for cancelling, i.e. what it will actually cost them. If your holiday’s in November I think that gives them lots of time to resell it (if it’s even able to go ahead then) so if I were you I’d ask them to justify/list why it will cost them £400 to cancel your holiday.
If you don’t pay the full deposit you will be chased for the outstanding amount
here’s the thread if you’re interested
Wow that’s a long thread It amazes me that people are not paying money that they know they owe The holiday companies are allowing you to transfer to 2021 which means all money you have paid would be transferred over
It's nothing new - as long as I can recall, the terms of the low deposit schemes for all package operators have been that if you cancel you have to pay the full deposit anyway. I'm not really wanting to defend package operators, but I don't think they can be blamed for people not reading what the terms they agree to are. Why not ask them if you can transfer it to a deposit on something for next year? That way you lose nothing. As a general observation, I have always found it quite scary how many people sign up for things - and by that I mean any form of contract - without actually reading the terms.
@moondust001 100% agree I work In the travel industry and we get our clients to either sign a low deposit form or email it to them which I turn they respond by email to say they have read it However the amount of people that then decide to cancel and say they didn’t know this is unreal
But why are the holiday companies acting like holidays in August will be happening as normal and asking us to continue paying for them when we all know that’s not the case? I understand what’s been said about small print and in normal circumstances I’d agree and expect to pay the full deposit. But I’m not really the one cancelling here, the situation is, and I can’t get behind the idea that I need to keep paying the full balance of my holiday in order to get money back, and also don’t agree with paying an extra £600 to cancel a holiday that is basically already not going to happen anyway.
I’m not sure about postponing until next year either; for a package holiday that relies on the tour operator, the airline, the hotel and also the coach/taxi transfer company all still being in business in 2021. I’m not confident that will be the case, or that international leisure travel will be back to completely normal either.
The companies will go bust , the airlines will collapse , the hotels will close if people take the attitude “oh it’s not going to happen so I won’t pay “ No one knows what will happen in August not 100% At the end of the day not paying the rest of ur deposit is breaking a contract and they can demand the money
Ok, that’s a fair point there. It’s hard to know what to do when everyone’s worried about money and what the future holds.
Totally sunshineoutdoors I work in the travel industry and so worried about my job - like everyone will be but this industry has been hit soooo hard
@SunshineOutdoors , I'm in the same boat. Have paid £200 deposit and keep getting emails for the balance £5000+. Due to travel 20 July. Emails say to call if we want to amend but can't get through. I'm not paying any of the balance and don't mind losing the £200 deposit. Don't mind changing to 2021 though but not willing to pay a higher deposit. Don't really know what to do. FCO says no international travel anywhere so am not sure why they keep chasing for the balance of a holiday that's not going to happen.

With the recent Covid outbreak holiday makers are having to watch their purse strings even more. Now, TUI and First Choice are offering holidaymakers a handy, alternative solution, paying by equal instalments via direct debit and also the chance to book online without paying a deposit.
The new offer means you can book your holiday and pay £0 deposit. Instead, you pay the balance off in monthly direct debit instalments.
The service is available now on the TUI and First Choice websites.
The offer will be valid on travel dates departing from March 2021.
Other companies in the past that have offered no deposit holidays by direct debit were the Thomas Cook group, which included Thomas Cook, Airtours and Manos branded package holidays. Unfortunately Thomas Cook in UK ceased trading in September of 2019.
The monthly instalment amounts will vary depending on the cost of the holiday and the chosen dates too.
The 2021 holidays £0 no deposits are only available for selected holidays, so remember to check before you confirm your booking. A Direct Debit needs to be set up before the booking has confirmed. Please remember to look for the option for your no deposit holiday, the option will look like the graphic below saying “pay nothing today”. Browse First Choice Deals
As you are paying by direct debit, you do not have to pay the balance due for your holiday 12 weeks before you go. Direct debit payments will be arranged so that the balance is paid 6 weeks before you go on holiday. If you cancel the direct debit at any time you will need to pay the balance due 12 weeks before you travel. Skytours holidays are available on TUI website. TUI Deal of the week
Look for a box similar to boxes below to show you are not having to pay a deposit, and your holiday will be taken by direct debit payments
The most common questions asked regarding the direct debit scheme are:
Have you booked a TUI holiday in the United Kingdom and want to cancel, change or transfer it to someone else?
You may be wondering: Can I cancel or change my TUI holiday booking? How do I cancel or change my booking and how much will it cost me? You are in luck, TUI allows you to cancel, change or transfer your holiday for a fee. Here we will break down the fee structure and take you through the process of changing or cancelling your TUI booking.
How do I change or cancel my TUI booking?
TUI allows both cancellations and changes. If you have booked your holiday on TUI’s website (not through another travel agency) you can go to Manage My Booking in your TUI account to make changes including: cancelling your holiday, changing your holiday, changing the names of the passengers, changing contact details and much more.
If you have booked one of the following holidays, you have to contact TUI directly (over the phone or through their website). You cannot cancel these online through your account. This is because the cancellation rules for these bookings are different.
- Flight only
- Ski holidays
- Lakes & Mountains holidays
- Twin centre holidays
- Group bookings
- Weddings abroad
- Hotel only bookings
- Package with flights offered by another airline
Important Note: If you booked a TUI holiday from a travel agent other than TUI contact the agent directly.
How much will it cost to cancel my TUI holiday?
If you want to cancel your TUI holiday you must pay a termination fee. The termination fee depends on how many days before the booking you inform TUI of your cancelation. The table below outlines the termination fees:
Important Note: Your deposit is non-refundable and TUI may not be able to refund added elements of your holiday. Once your booking has been cancelled, you can expect to receive a cancellation invoice within 14 days.
Do you think that that’s quite expensive? Do you want to recover more from your cancelled holiday? Many people are not aware of this, but you have an alternative to cancelling your TUI holiday – sell it to another person and get your refund that way. If this sounds like the better option, read the last section below ‘Can I sell my TUI holiday’.
Can I change my TUI holiday?
Yes, you can also make changes to your TUI booking. You can upgrade a service, add on a flight extra, upgrade a room type or board basis, among other changes. Some changes are free and for some you will need to pay a fee. Check out the table in the section below for all types of change fees. Unfortunately, you cannot change the dates of your holiday, as this will be treated as a cancellation of your booking. TUI allows you to amend your booking and itinerary by using Manage My Booking in your TUI account. If you need assistance you can contact TUI directly.
How much will it cost to change or transfer my TUI holiday?
Amendments to TUI bookings require you to pay an amendment fee that vary by holiday and type of amendment. The table below outlines the amendment fees you must pay to TUI. For more details visit Booking Conditions . There may be additional fees on top of the amendment fees you will have to pay to airlines and transportation providers. The TUI customer service representatives will notify you if there are any additional fees.
Important Note: Keep in mind that some parts of your holiday package like activities, transportation, attraction tickets might be non-refundable.
Can I sell my TUI holiday to another person?
Do you think that TUI’s cancellation fees are quite high? They will likely resell your holiday, while keeping your deposit and cancellation fees, which is quite unfair. Many people are not aware of this, but you have another option – sell your holiday to another person and get your refund that way. TUI allow you to transfer your holiday in the name of another person. You should contact TUI by email or in writing 7 days or more before the booking. In addition, the person you are transferring the booking to must accept the transfer and TUI’s terms and conditions 7 days or more before the booking to receive the holiday. You will be responsible for paying the amendment fee of £25 per person. There might be additional fees resulting from the change, but the TUI representatives will let you know if this is the case. To change the names of the passengers on your holiday, you need to contact TUI directly.
If selling your holiday sounds like a great idea, but you don’t have a friend who wants it, read below to find out how SpareFare can help.
Visit TUI directly for more information on fee changes and to view their Guide To Our Amendment Fees and their terms and conditions.

Book by 29th november and get up to £200 off*, our complete guide to no deposit holidays in 2024/2025.
No deposit holidays are such a great idea. Let's say you've spotted your dream holiday in the sunshine but don't quite have the money to pay a deposit? Or maybe you've spotted two great deals in 2024 or 2025 and need a little extra time to discuss it with your family and decide? Either way, a no deposit holiday can be a brilliant option for securing that holiday you've been after, without actually having to commit any money. How does it work? Here's our guide to booking a cheap holiday with zero deposit.
Destinations.
Unfortunately, you can't book a UK holiday with no deposit, however, you can secure your trip with a payment from as low as £25 per person with companies like Forest Holidays and Haven holiday parks, meaning you can still book ahead and enjoy places in the UK like Devon, Cornwall and Wales without having to pay in full upfront, but transfering the remaining payments over several months. These low deposit holiday options are such a great way to spread the cost and help you manage your money.
Fancy enjoying the soft sandy beaches of Spain or the exciting water parks of Turkey, but don't quite have the funds? TUI has over 70 fantastic destinations in Europe and around the world in places like the USA and Caribbean. So whether you want the perfect family holiday in the Greek Islands, a little bit of winter sun in Tenerife and the Canary Islands, or a far flung all inclusive holiday in Mexico, you're bound to find a great package deal. Other favourite destinations include Majorca and Ibiza in Spain, the Algarve in Portugal, Cyprus and Malta. Many city break destinations like Amsterdam, Barcelona and New York aren't included in the offer.
Cruise holidays usually require you to pay a deposit to secure your cabin, which can vary, starting from £50 per person or 10%. This can be the case across most cruise companies like Marella, P&O Cruises, Royal Caribbean and NCL.
There are really only two travel companies who offer the ability to secure a holiday without having to pay any money. Fortunately, they are also both ABTA and ATOL protected. but there are other many other companies who now offer a low deposit scheme too.
TUI offers a great range of hotel and flight inclusive holidays with destinations ranging from Benidorm and Benalmadena to Bodrum and even Barbados. They are able to offer these types of holidays because the flights are usually on their TUI airline, so can manage their seat availability accordingly. Once booked, direct debit payments will be taken from your bank account as per the booking conditions, with the final payment due around 12 weeks before your departure date. Sometimes even free kids places can be included which is great for families.
As part of the same company, First Choice also offers these fantastic low deposit holidays and deals with zero to pay upfront. So whether you're booking a short break for a stag do or hen do in the sun and need time to collect up the money, or you're booking a pricier all inclusive holiday for the whole family, this can be a great option.
Simple! Do a search with TUI or First Choice holidays to see what's available. In the search results you'll see what the deposit situation is. It will either say you can secure the holiday booking with a deposit of a certain amount, or no deposit needed. Holidays departing further out will usually have this option when a flight with TUI is involved. Choose and book the right holiday for you, and pay of the full balance as instructed by them.
You'll need to make sure you pay the minimum amounts they require by the dates they set, and can be easiest by direct debit online, however, aside from this, you can pay as much extra as you like. You could even create your own monthly payment plan, so that after you get paid, you pay off a certain amount of the balance. The full amount is often due around 90 days or 12 weeks before departure, however this can vary so ALWAYS check the booking terms and conditions before you book.
Here are some of our favourite reasons why a zero deposit holiday is a great idea:
Unlike ones with zero deposit, low deposit holidays are available through quite a few travel agents and tour operators if you're booking far enough in advance, including top brands like Jet2holidays, Thomas Cook, loveholidays and Hays Travel. This allows you to secure your holiday with a low deposit from as little as £25 per person and pay the remaining balance over time with more affordable monthly payments by direct debit. Find out more about low deposit holidays .
Can i book a holiday with no deposit.
Yes, you can book a holiday with no deposit and pay monthly installments. Find and book your no deposit holiday above.
This can vary from company to company and can be accommodation only (in the UK), or flight inclusive holidays (if travelling abroad).
No, Jet2 does not have zero deposit holidays, but TUI and First Choice do. However Jet2holidays does provide low deposits and financially protection through the ABTA and ATOL schemes.
Usually, when you book a holiday, no deposit options are highlighted. You will sign an agreement with the tour operator to pay monthly installments up until several months before you depart, this is normally done by providing your bank details so that a direct debit can be set up and the money taking from your bank account on the same day each month automatically.
Yes, with no deposit, you can book now and pay later through a monthly direct debit payment plan.
If you cancel your holiday, but have not yet paid any money (and don't owe any money on the booking), the holiday will be cancelled free of charge. If you have already paid some money towards your trip, check the terms and conditions to see how much money you will lose when you cancel as there may be fees.
The number of payments depends on how far in advance you book but will be at least 3 payments. Normally the package needs to be paid in full several months before you travel, so the further in advance you book, the more time you have to pay and the more payments taken. At any point, you can organise to pay the full balance.

A bit of a con trick methinks (other opinions may differ) - once the customer has paid a couple or so DDs then TUI essentially have enough to cover the low (or full ?) deposit in their account. On the other hand, DDs are certainly a convenient way of spreading the cost of the overall price of a cruise or holiday over a period of time.
