  • Trivia The producers asked George Takei to come back and play Sulu one more time, and take the helm of the Enterprise-B. But Takei refused, because if Sulu had taken the helm, this would have meant temporarily reducing Sulu's rank, so that he could serve under Captain Kirk again. He felt that Sulu had worked too hard to earn his command to allow even a temporary reduction. A new character, Demora, daughter of Sulu, was created to speak Sulu's lines.
  • Goofs As Worf climbs up the side of the 19th century ship, his right knee is red either from bleeding or from touching a part of the ship that may have been freshly painted. When he enters the bridge, the red color is missing.

Kirk : Captain of the Enterprise, huh?

Picard : That's right.

Kirk : Close to retirement?

Picard : I'm not planning on it.

Kirk : Well let me tell you something. Don't! Don't let them promote you. Don't let them transfer you. Don't let them do *anything* that takes you off the bridge of that ship, because while you're there... you can make a difference.

Picard : Come back with me. Help me stop Soran. Help make a difference again!

Kirk : Who am I to argue with the captain of the Enterprise? What's the name of that planet? Veridian III?

Kirk : I take it the odds are against us and the situation is grim?

Picard : You could say that.

Kirk : You know if Spock were here, he'd say I was an irrational, illogical human being for going on a mission like that.

Kirk : Sounds like fun!

  • Alternate versions Fox-TV version removes some footage: During the crisis on the Enterprise B, Kirk starts to stand a number of times to offer a suggestion and then thinks better of it, sitting back down. Scotty leans over after this happens a few times and asks if there's something wrong with his chair. Scotty's remark is deleted. After Riker orders the computer to remove the plank, causing Worf to be dumped in the water, his follow-up exchange with Picard is missing - Picard: "Number One, that's 'retract' the plank, not 'remove' the plank." Riker: "Of course, sir. [shouting over the rail] Sorry!"

Critic Reviews for Star Trek Generations

Audience reviews for star trek generations.

Sometimes a franchise and its characters have run its course to a point where new faces and fresh ideas are needed. Though the Star Trek franchise as a whole was at a high in 1994 with two acclaimed TV series airing and the films coming off a great finale in 'The Undiscovered Country', to me, 'Generations' wasn't the proper next step to take. Sure, it's hard to let go of beloved characters, but 'The Undiscovered Country' felt like the perfect send off for all of the original cast members, including Captain Kirk. Nonetheless he was brought back to past the torch to the next crew to man the Enterprise. Of course, that group being the cast from The Next Generation. Which is exactly where the film has most of its problems. Attempting to balance both timelines, Kirks being 75 years or so earlier, and Captain Picard's (Patrick Stewart) being present day, sometimes the film feels jumbled and bunched together. In other words, there's plenty of set up with the main antagonist played by Malcom McDowell, but the pay-off takes a great deal of time and exposition to get to. It's a much different universe, but Star Wars did an impeccable job blending both casts into The Force Awakens, so that's more along the lines of what I was hoping for. With all that being said, the new cast from the TV series definitely deserve their own individual film (which is obviously what they got a few years later). It's impossible to top the original crew, but there's enough personalities and likable characters, including Stewart's stern but sympathetic Picard. As far as the actual plot itself goes, it pretty much follows the same Star Trek formula, except for the trippy Nexus sequence where Picard and Kirk are stuck in a time loop. It's the most talked about and controversial scenes from the film, and for good reason. I don't necessarily think the sequence works the way it supposed to, but it is where we end up getting the most emotional pay off. So overall, Generations is a middle of the road Star Trek adventure, but at the very least, it gives the new crew some time to shine. +Picard & Kirk +Nexus +Beautiful score -Choppy first half -Formulaic 6.3/10

While it was nice to see both original cast members and Next Generation cast members in the same film, the film's action, story, and dialogue really dragged for most of the film. Action scenes were sporadic and the storyline as a whole was very weak and uninteresting.

With an all new cast of actors, the Star Trek franchise take a new turn and reinvents the series by introducing a new crew. With Generations we get a highly entertaining and thrilling story, mixed with some worthwhile performances. I really enjoyed the film, thought it was a fine mix of thrills, a bit of action and everything else that make for an effective Star Trek film. The film is a very good entry, one that brings new ideas to the table, and I really enjoyed the direction that the film took with its ideas and concept. This is an accomplished Science Fiction film, and ranks among the finest in the series. With the cast at hand, and good script, Generations is an engaging picture that is worth seeing if you enjoy the genre. An aspect that really stood out for me was the performance of Malcolm McDowell, which made the film that much better. He really delivered one of the film's strongest performances, and it more than makes up for the film's shortcomings. With that being said, Generations is a well crafted picture, one that at times shows part where it could have been improved upon, but considering some of the performances we get on-screen, it's easy to forget the film's weaker points. Overall, this is a pleasant Science Fiction film, one that definitely stands out among other genre films. If you've enjoyed the previous film, you're sure to enjoy this one, and it's a refreshing due to a new cast from the Star Trek: The Next Generations being the new cast in this film. This film has flaws, but it's nonetheless an enjoyable affair that is an engaging film from start to finish.

In 2293, the newly built USS Enterprise B is undertaking its maiden voyage with Kirk (Shatner), Scott (Doohan) and Chekhov (Koenig) aboard for the ride. The initial celebrations are interrupted when a distress signal is received from two refugee ships caught in a lethal energy ribbon. Taking Kirk's advice, the Enterprise crew beam aboard the passengers of one ship, but are unable to save the second. The Enterprise itself becomes caught in the ribbon, and Kirk is presumably killed while freeing the ship by altering the deflector shields. 78 years later, the USS Enterprise D receives a similar distress call. By the time of 'The Undiscovered Country', the original Trek cast had become one of pop culture's biggest jokes, their advanced ages fueling many a chat show host's opening monologue. The decision was made to put them to pasture and pass the baton to the 'Next Generation'. Originally it had been intended for Kirk, Spock and McCoy to make a final appearance but Leonard Nimoy and DeForest Kelley were uninterested in making a return. Instead, the script was rewritten for Chekhov and Scott. If Kelley and Nimoy had read said script, it's hard to criticize their decision. Chekhov and Scott are given short shrift and Kirk, though having a decent amount of screen time, departs the franchise in something of an undignified manner. His "death" is particularly underwhelming, though it does tie in with his 'Final Frontier' prophecy of dying alone. When he returns later in the film, courtesy of a plot device known as "The Nexus", he's become a rambling, somewhat senile old man. Hardly a fitting end for one of cinema and TV's most legendary figures. 'Generations' is the first Trek film to resemble a TV series two-parter. Director Carson had never worked outside TV and this is all too evident in this film's lack of scale, particularly noticeable as it follows Nicholas Meyer's great work on the previous film. It's telling that Carson would never helm a theatrical feature after this one, returning immediately to the world of episodic TV. The Next-Gen cast themselves simply aren't suited to big-screen adventures, with only Stewart possessing any real gravitas among the bunch. While Frakes, Spiner et al are perfectly fine on the small screen, they lack the charisma of Shatner, Nimoy and Kelley. This would become even more evident in later films. The most irritating aspect of this film is the treatment of Data (Spiner), transformed into a comic figure through a cheesy and groan-inducing subplot involving an emotion chip. The movie descends into the sort of cheap comedy the TV show wisely, and thankfully, avoided. There's a touch of the Jar-Jar about all this, as though the producers wanted to capture the kiddie market. As a result, a character who was at times fascinating on TV becomes merely an annoyance here. Aside from Picard, Data gets the most screen time, as does Geordi La Forge (Burton), ironic given he was the character most neglected on the small screen. Worf (Dorn), Riker (Frakes), Crusher (McFadden) and Troi (Sirtis) are barely represented. Most of the film is crushingly dull but things do pick up somewhat for the conclusion, which sees Shatner, Stewart and McDowell face off in a clash of, (wildly different in style), acting greats. For the most part, 'Generations' is a disappointing farewell to Kirk and an uninspiring big-screen debut for the Next-Gen crew.

Star Trek VII: Generations

Watch Star Trek VII: Generations

  • 1 hr 58 min
  • 6.6   (86,421)

In Star Trek VII: Generations, the crew of the Enterprise, both old and new, join together on a mission to stop a madman from destroying thousands of lives. The film marked the first time the cast of the popular TV series The Next Generation and the original Star Trek series came together on the big screen. The story begins with the Enterprise being dispatched to help an observation post that is under attack by members of the Klingon Empire. During the mission, Captain Kirk (William Shatner) appears unexpectedly, and he quickly becomes embroiled in the action. He and Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) must work together to stop Dr. Soran (Malcolm McDowell), a man who is willing to destroy entire planets in his quest for finding a way into a mysterious realm known as the Nexus.

The Nexus is an ethereal energy ribbon that exists outside of time and space. Once someone enters it, they are able to experience their greatest joys and desires. Soran is familiar with the Nexus, as he had entered it once before, only to have been ripped away by Picard. Now, Soran is willing to do anything to return to the Nexus, even if it means sacrificing innocent lives.

As Picard and Kirk try to stop Soran, they both find themselves confronting the ghosts of their past. Picard must deal with the loss of his brother and nephew, who were killed in a fire, while Kirk is haunted by the memories of his past adventures aboard the Enterprise.

The film is a beautiful exploration of the passing of the torch from one generation to the next. Both Shatner and Stewart give wonderful performances, showing their characters’ vulnerabilities and strengths, as well as their personal struggles. McDowell also shines as the complex, villainous Soran, who is both pitiable and despicable at the same time.

The film also includes some standout action sequences, including a thrilling space battle, and an epic showdown between Kirk and Soran on a cliffside. However, these moments are balanced out by quieter, more introspective scenes, allowing the characters' emotional journeys to take center stage.

One of the most memorable aspects of the film is the way it uses the Nexus to explore the idea of an ideal existence. The Nexus reflects each individual's deepest desires and longings, showing that one's version of paradise may not be what they thought. The idea of an ideal world is further explored in the film's climax, which showcases the purest expression of what it means to live a life worth living.

Overall, Star Trek VII: Generations is a fantastic addition to the Star Trek canon. It provides a fitting end for some beloved characters while introducing new ones to the series. The theme of passing the torch and finding meaning in life is woven throughout the film, making it both entertaining and thought-provoking. Fans of both the original series and The Next Generation will undoubtedly find something to love in this film.

Star Trek VII: Generations is a 1994 science fiction movie with a runtime of 1 hour and 58 minutes. It has received moderate reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.6 and a MetaScore of 55.

Star Trek's Strongest Supporting Women Characters

Beyond the Captain Janeways, Dr. Crushers, and Major Kiras, there has always been strong women in Star Trek.

Illustrated collage featuring Star Trek's Number One, Kasidy Yates, Carol Marcus, Ro Laren, Lursa, Edith Keeler, Rachel Garrett, and Lily Sloane

StarTrek.com

While the Star Trek franchise reached its pinnacle with Kate Mulgrew's fantastic portrayal of Captain Janeway, it began earlier with the truly revolutionary casting of Nichelle Nichols as Lt. Uhura. While one can nitpick and say she was subservient to the boys (and there's definitely an argument to be made), the very fact that an African American woman was seen on the Bridge had a direct impact on the viewing public. (Just ask Whoopi Goldberg!)

As Women's History Month comes to a close, let's take a look back — beyond the Dr. Crushers and Major Kiras — to some of the less-obvious strong women characters in the history of Star Trek .

10. Captain Kasidy Yates

Close-up of Kasidy Yates as she smiles over at Ben Sisko in 'The Way of the Warrior'

"The Way of the Warrior"

It takes a special kind of woman to win the heart of a space station commander, military leader, and Emissary to the Prophets. Kasidy Yates is that women.

She's a hardworking cargo ship captain (engaging in some light and mostly benign smuggling on the side) who refuses special treatment when caught or when it’s time to pitch in against the Dominion. Plus, she likes baseball. Yeah, Kasidy is awesome — let Sisko do the cooking!

9. Yeoman Leslie Thompson

Yeoman Leslie Thompson beams down to a planet's surface with the away team in 'By Any Other Name'

"By Any Other Name"

Okay, an odd pick, sure, but hear me out 'cause this is important.

How much was The Original Series in the vanguard? They were willing to have women beam down to planets as part of armed away teams. And sometimes (okay, once) they were willing to kill them off. Pretty radical!

Yeoman Thompson was the redshirt who was turned into the giant chalk Dungeons & Dragons cube and then crushed to death by that jerk from the Andromeda Galaxy in " By Any Other Name ."

8. Romulan Commander

The Romulan commander sits comfortably in her seat in 'The Enterprise Incident'

"The Enterprise Incident"

Nobody said they all had to be good guys!

While ultimately unsuccessful, the unnamed Romulan Commander from The Original Series ' "The Enterprise Incident" was cunning enough that it took the wits of both Kirk and Spock to take her down.

She had ambition and drive, as well as the courage to sacrifice herself for the good of the Romulan Empire. And did she actually get under Spock's Vulcan skin a little bit? That's up to your interpretation.

7. Lily Sloane

Close-up of Lily Sloane on the surface of Earth in Bozeman as she looks up to the sky in Star Trek: First Contact

Star Trek: First Contact

Blow up the damn ship!

Lily Sloane, Star Trek: First Contact

It takes a lot of sand to say — to SHOUT — something like that to Jean-Luc Picard, as Lily Sloane does in Star Trek: First Contact . And to kinda be right? Even more so.

Most civilians from a pre-Warp era would just be freaking out that time traveling humans and aliens are bombarding Earth, but this sharp engineer keeps her head enough to offer military advice.

Close-up of Lursa as she holds a cup in 'Redemption'

"Redemption"

The true mastermind of the Klingon Civil War, the machinations of Lursa of the House of Duras left the galaxy quaking for whole seasons. Even with all this going on, she found time to be a mother. Awww, right?

Also, her death in Star Trek Generations was cooler than Kirk's. Sadly, it was WAY cooler.

(Feel free to argue with me that Kai Winn shoulda got the "political puppet master" slot. It was a close call.)

5. Captain Rachel Garrett

Captain Rachel Garrett looks up while on the bridge of the Enterprise-C in 'Yesterday's Enterprise'

"Yesterday's Enterprise"

From Star Trek: The Next Generation 's " Yesterday's Enterprise ," a serious contender for best single episode ever in any series, we meet the captain of the Enterprise -C, Rachel Garrett . And we don't even KNOW that it is due to her bravery and sacrifice that the current timeline is as breezy and upbeat as it is today. (Guinan kinda knows, but that's complicated.)

Tricia O'Neal's strong-yet-still-feminine portrayal of a starship captain no doubt paved the way toward Captain Janeway, another reason to offer her a hero's salute.

4. Dr. Carol Marcus

Carol Marcus pensively glances over in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan

The woman who held, at least for a time, the heart of James Tiberius Kirk. But Dr. Marcus is no mere Captain's squeeze. She is an independent woman and a brilliant scientist whose Genesis Device is so powerful it was the focus of two movies!!

She also represents one of the very few times you'll see someone have a bone of contention with Starfleet prior to the creation of the Maquis.

(Again, here's your opportunity to scream at me for leaving a different brilliant scientist, Dr. Leah Brahms , off the list. This is hard work, people! And thankless, too. I felt the heat the other day for not including the Salt Vampire from TOS or the corpses from TNG ’s “ Night Terrors ” in my column about Trek ’s freakiest moments.)

3. Number One

Number One sits at her station on the bridge of the Enterprise in 'The Cage'

"The Cage"

Captain Pike's steady-as-a-rock first officer, Number One, was a brilliant tactician who wasn't afraid to bring out the laser cannons, or to sacrifice herself with an overloaded phaser rather than suffer indignities at the hands of the Talosians.

If you think her story ended with "The Cage," oh, how wrong you are. Drop everything and read John Byrne's fantastic comic series Star Trek: Crew to see Number One's really whacked-out adventures both pre- and post- her time on the Enterprise . Then pick up some of Peter David's New Frontier novels and focus on the Morgana Prime character. (I was there at New York Comic-Con a few years ago when David basically admitted that Morgana - Robin Lefler's mother - was actually Number One!)

In addition, Number One's adventure continues aboard Pike's Enterprise on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds .

2. Ro Laren

Close-up of Ro Laren in Star Trek: The Next Generation - Preemptive Strike

"Preemptive Strike"

[ RELATED : Everything You Need to Know About Ro Laren ]

One of the richest figures in Star Trek , the Bajoran nationalist was the first character we ever met whose antipathy toward Starfleet ever seemed justified. Still, her loyalty to Captain Picard kept her in line... most of the time.

Ro Laren was such a badass that even the woman who played her, Michelle Forbes, had to swim upstream. She rejected the offer to be a lead on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , causing the show's producers to create the (at first) somewhat similar character of Kira Nerys. Ultimately, it worked out for the best, but, oh, if only we could glimpse into that alternate timeline!

But to hold that desire ever, don't miss Ro Laren's confrontation with Picard 30+ years after the fact in Star Trek: Picard .

1. Edith Keeler

Close-up of Edith Keeler with a street light shining on her at night in 'The City on the Edge of Forever'

"The City on the Edge of Forever"

Imagine a woman whose soup is so powerful it could change the course of World War II.

In " The City on the Edge of Forever ," it is this loving, warm, and caring pacifist who must be silenced for evil not to conquer the world. (Blame Harlan Ellison; he's the sicko that thought of it!) Edith Keeler isn't just a character; she's a philosophical construct, a topic worthy of intellectual debate that the finest scholars could argue about for ages. And just thinking about her (and the phrase "He knows, Doctor. He knows.") is enough to send an army of Star Trek fans blubbering.

I don’t think michael piller recreated his tng success with star trek: voyager season 2’s finale.

Star Trek: Voyager showrunner Michael Piller wanted to recreate a TNG success story but missed the mark in Voyager's season 2 finale episode.

  • Michael Piller wanted Star Trek: Voyager's "Basics" to mirror "The Best of Both Worlds" success
  • Despite Piller's past success, "Basics" failed to live up to the iconic status of TNG's "The Best of Both Worlds"
  • Unlike TNG's game-changing impact, "Basics" did not influence either Voyager or the wider franchise much after it aired.

Star Trek: Voyager 's season 2 finale failed to recreate the success of one of Star Trek: The Next Generation 's best episodes, despite producer Michael Piller's intentions. Piller began his tenure in the Star Trek franchise as a writer on TNG and worked as executive producer/showrunner on both Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Voyager . Although Piller departed the franchise after two seasons on Voyager , he is still remembered for his significant contributions to the 1990s-era Star Trek series , having written some of the franchise's best episodes during that time period.

One of these episodes was the TNG season 3/4 two-parter, "The Best of Both Worlds, Parts 1&2," which saw Starfleet's first major conflict with the Borg and Captain Jean-Luc Picard's (Patrick Stewart) transformation into Locutus. "The Best of Both Words" is widely regarded as TNG 's best episode of all time and one of the most iconic and important storylines in the franchise. The distinction of having written it is high praise for Piller, which makes it unsurprising that he would want to recreate this success on other Star Trek series, including Voyager .

How To Watch All Star Trek TV Shows In Timeline Order

Michael piller wanted to recreate tng’s best episodes’ success with voyager’s season 2 finale, piller wanted "basics" to be voyager's version of "the best of both worlds".

Piller specifically sought to recreate "The Best of Both Worlds'" success in Voyager 's season 2 finale and season 3 premiere episode, "Basics, Part 1&2." The episode was the last that Piller wrote for Voyager , and on the surface has several things going for it in terms of an ambitious plot and engaging characters. "Basics" was the culmination of Voyager 's Kazon storyline , featuring the final showdown between the crew, Maje Culluh (Anthony De Longis), and Seska (Martha Hackett). As a season finale/season premier duo, it also needed to tell an ambitious story to keep audiences engaged.

Given that Piller was leaving Voyager after "Basics," he likely wanted to leave the show with some good material to explore heading into season 3. Voyager 's first two seasons were strong enough to get the series continually renewed, but many episodes were hit or miss. The fact that Piller had already contributed some of Star Trek 's most memorable episodes in previous shows should have set him up for success when crafting "Basics" as his farewell to the franchise.

Why Voyager’s “Basics” Wasn’t As Good As TNG’s “The Best Of Both Worlds”

"basics" unequivocally did not live up to tng's most famous episode.

However, despite Piller's wishes, "Basics" was entirely unsuccessful in recreating the fame of "The Best of Both Worlds" or any of his other popular episodes. "The Best of Both Worlds" succeeded because it fundamentally changed the Star Trek franchise going forward. Introducing the Borg as Starfleet's most formidable enemy and Picard's time as Locutus informed Star Trek storylines for decades to come, weaving out a web that left many future series interconnected back to the episode in some way.

In contrast, "Basics" was never going to achieve anything so ambitious. Voyager 's premise prohibited many of its storylines from influencing the wider franchise , and the main issue with "Basics" was the episode's villains. Unlike the Borg, the Kazon were almost universally hated at the time "Basics" aired, and the one memorable thing the episode did was end their storyline on Voyager for good. "Basics" wasn't even Star Trek: Voyager 's best two-parter , let alone anything close to the level of quality that "The Best of Both Worlds" exemplified.

Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: The Next Generation are both available to stream on Paramount+.

The fifth entry in the Star Trek franchise, Star Trek: Voyager, is a sci-fi series that sees the crew of the USS Voyager on a long journey back to their home after finding themselves stranded at the far ends of the Milky Way Galaxy. Led by Captain Kathryn Janeway, the series follows the crew as they embark through truly uncharted areas of space, with new species, friends, foes, and mysteries to solve as they wrestle with the politics of a crew in a situation they've never faced before.

Star Trek: The Next Generation

Star Trek: The Next Generation is the third installment in the sci-fi franchise and follows the adventures of Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the crew members of the USS Enterprise. Set around one hundred years after the original series, Picard and his crew travel through the galaxy in largely self-contained episodes exploring the crew dynamics and their own political discourse. The series also had several overarching plots that would develop over the course of the isolated episodes, with four films released in tandem with the series to further some of these story elements.
