Nissan Navara Trek-1° review: top-spec pick up tested

Excellent, a pick-up truck. I like pick-up trucks. What’s this one?

A limited-edition black-on-black-on-black pick-up truck from Nissan complete with fancy roll-over hoop and retina-searing LED light bar. It’s called the Navara Trek-1°, which we have no idea how to say (Trek minus one degree?). If you don’t like Batman-spec hue, panic not. You can also get it in white…on-black-on-black.

Essentially, this Navara is the toppiest of top spec Navaras, and another option to rival the likes of the VW Amarok and upcoming Mercedes X-Class. Which is quite ironic really, as the X-Class is basically a re-badged and lightly-fettled Navara. Not that Mercedes will ever tell you that. 

What’s it based on?

A top-spec double-cab Navara Tekna. Under the bonnet is the same 2.3-litre turbocharged diesel engine with 188bhp and 331lb ft, attached to a six-speed manual or seven-speed automatic gearbox. Power can be fed to all four-wheels via the twist of a knob, and it’ll hit 62mph in 10.8 seconds.

Visually, the Trek-1° comes with black side steps, new black 18in six-spoke alloy wheels, the rollover hoop with LED lights and a new body-coloured plastic load bed cover that’s hinged on gas struts and lockable to keep whatever the hell you keep back there safe.

Does it drive any differently to a normal Navara? 

Given the changes are all aesthetic, what do you think? To be fair, the Navara hasn’t been crying out for any upgrades as it’s one of the best handling pick-ups you can buy. It’s largely due to the fact it’s got proper multi-link rear suspension bolted onto the chassis. Which at least leaves your back in one piece while driving over a speedhump, as opposed to many. Alongside this, it’ll also carry large quantities of overweight livestock/vegetation/last year’s wardrobe.

As trucks go – when empty – it’s incredibly well-mannered. Yes, the diesel engine is slightly lethargic, the gearbox agricultural and steering lazy in its actions, but it’s no worse than a low-spec crossover. And it can handle corners at speed without depositing you into the scenery. In the great car/pick-up truck Venn diagram, it’s the closest any pick-up has got to the car yet. And that’s crucial, as that’s the market Nissan (and more so, Mercedes) is trying to capture with these pseudo luxurious pick-ups.

Smart, but not exactly luxurious. If you’re familiar with the X-Trail, the cabin with its chrome-garnished switchgear, silvery plastic-metal trim and many screens and readouts will look familiar.

Should I buy one?

Only 1,500 Trek-1° editions will be made worldwide, with 400 destined for sale in the UK. Costing an additional £3,435 on top of a Tekna spec, at £37,285 it’s quite expensive. If you’re really looking into a posh pick-up, we’d recommend waiting until the new X-Class arrives in early 2018 before making your mind up. Especially if you’re a badge snob.

Nissan Navara Trek 1 review

Nissan has added a sprinkling of tasty exterior styling touches to a few hundred UK double-cab Navara pick-ups and is selling them as a special edition extension to the range.

Called the Trek-1°, the 400 limited edition models are based on the top-of-the range Tekna-spec pick-ups, and come in two shades: metallic black or the Trek-1-only hue of Storm White.

Interior and equipment

The What Van? test vehicle arrived in black, and its extras included handsome black 18-inch six-spoke alloy wheels, black door handles, black side styling bars, black bed styling bars with forward-facing LED spot lamps, black bed cover with bed divider, and ‘Trek-1°’ decals on the load bed.

The adornments bring extra style and desirability, along with an ex. VAT price of £30,686 for the seven-speed auto version (there’s also a six-speed manual model for £29,270), which is £3k-ish more than the equivalent Tekna-only model.

Move inside and, as with all Tekna-specified Navaras, this special edition is equipped as standard with the likes of leather seats, steering wheel and gear knob, and tech such as satnav and Nissan’s 360° Around View Monitor, which provides a bird’s-eye view of the vehicle. All of which makes the cabin a very comfortable environment that with the aid of an admirable on-the-road ride quality warrants the description of ‘car-like’.

It’s still very much a pick-up though, which you are reminded of due to the presence of controls on the dash such as switchable four-wheel drive and hill-descent control.

The only option added to our test vehicle was a rear differential lock (£417 ex. VAT), and the only other option available is a towbar (£314 ex. VAT).

Engine-wise, the auto 2.3-litre diesel engine provides 190hp alongside a combined fuel economy of 40.4mpg, which is impressive. It delivers plenty of brawn too, making motorway cruising a breeze, while there are a range of safety features included as part of the price, such as Forward Emergency Braking. This system first warns the driver of a potential collision ahead, and if they fail to decelerate applies an emergency brake to prevent or reduce the impact of a crash.

As for its ability to carry out its core load-carrying duties, this version of the Navara is, of course, as rugged as ever, and it comes with a payload of 1,045kg and a load bed capable taking a standard pallet between the wheel arches,

Last year, Nissan’s Navara collected the What Van? Pick-up of the Year Award, beating competitors such as the Mitsubishi L200, Ford’s Ranger, and the VW Amarok. The addition to the range of a limited edition carrying a few extra frills certainly won’t harm its chances of repeating the feat again this year.

Review: Nissan Navara Trek-1°

Unique features and top-spec tech for limited-edition Navara

Get ready for a (simple, we promise) geography lesson. On a map, longitude lines are the ones that go up and down. London is on zero degrees. Northern Spain’s Navarre desert is on the 1° mark. The Nissan Navara Trek-1° is named after that geographical fact.

Phew. If, like us, you had a flashback to your old school desk just then, fret not: we’re coming bang up to date now with the most cutting-edge (in terms of spec anyway) version of Nissan’s popular pick-up.

Nissan is making 1,500 of these Trek-1°s, and 400 of them are coming to the UK. There’s every chance they’ll be quickly sold, because despite what you might think about vehicles that were originally designed for grubby work, there’s a clear and busy market for premium pick-ups in Europe. And in this peculiar but profitable market, the Nissan Trek-1° may be the most focused creation yet.

Based on the top-spec Tekna trim level – which accounts for four in every five UK Navara sales – the Trek-1° comes only in double-cab, five-seater form. The add-on to the price is £3,435, but on top of the Tekna luxury you get plenty of one-off features such as loadbed bars with two LED spotlights, black side styling bars, bespoke 18-inch six-spoke alloys, Trek-1° decals, and a hingeing loadbed cover that conceals a network of flexible dividers and liners.

Colours are restricted to Black Metallic or model-exclusive Storm White. Motive power comes from the familiar 2.3-litre turbocharged diesel in unchanged 158bhp or 187bhp formats, with a six-speed manual or a seven-speed automatic gearbox.

The first impression on climbing up into a Navara Trek-1° is that you’re in a well-equipped SUV. The seats are leather and the Qashqai-alike dashboard has a seven-inch touchscreen with DAB radio and sat-nav.

The more powerful 187bhp model with seven-speed automatic ‘box develops a useful 332lb ft of torque from 1,500rpm and wafts along impressively, making light of its 1,991kg weight.

cceleration both from stationary and on the move is strong enough to lend credence to the 3.5-tonne towing claim. The auto is slightly hesitant to kick down, reducing overtaking ability on slower roads, but otherwise it snicks quickly between the gears and boosts the the Trek-1°’s premium feel.

In fact the whole driveline is well up in the top segment of performers in this market. The four-wheel drive system has three modes. For optimum fuel economy, select two-wheel drive. For best pulling power, pick four-wheel drive. For max off-road traction, there’s four-wheel drive low. It’s all on offer at the flick of a switch and will reassure anyone worried about the gentrification of the Navara that, beneath all the glitz, the basic systems still work well. As does the Navara’s five-link rear suspension, giving a good ride on the 18-inch wheels and smothering speed humps with aplomb, even if less prominent surface glitches will send shudders through the body.

Overall, the SUV-like driving experience is positive testimony to the Navara’s gradual development. This vehicle is 331mm longer than a Range Rover, but doesn’t feel it. Visibility is predictably good from that height and improved by parking sensors and a 360-degree monitor that automatically switches to rear view when you go into reverse.

If you’re not so bothered about exclusivity or a smattering of bespoke (mainly styling) features, the regular Tekna does the same job as the Trek-1° for £3,435 less. It wouldn’t be quite as cool as the Trek-1°, but it would be better value and a lot cheaper than premium pick-up alternatives like the Amarok. If you do plump for a Trek-1°, mind your LED spotlights in multi-storey car parks.

A new special edition Nissan Navara has been revealed and is on sale in the UK now, limited to 400 examples and priced from £35,065.

Called the Navara Trek -1°, it’s based on the range topping double-cab Tekna version of Nissan’s pick-up truck, but introduces styling tweaks and additional standard equipment.

Black sport styling bars are a part of the package, alongside six spoke 18-inch alloy wheels finished in gloss black and a durable load bed cover made from high-grade plastic. It hides a bed featuring a load bed divider and liner. Finishing off the styling tweaks is a pair of forward facing LED spot lamps, attached to the top section of the styling bars at the back.

Given that it’s based on the range topping Tekna truck, it also benefits from an infotainment system with built-in satellite navigation and DAB digital radio, a 360-degree round view monitor, rear parking sensors and LED headlights. Driver assists are a part of the package too, such as forward emergency braking, hill descent control plus hill start assist. Leather, heated front seats plus an eight-way adjustable driver’s seat are standard.

Although the Navara Trek-1°’s styling tweaks take on a black theme, it’ll be available in pearlescent white as well as in the metallic black scheme pictured. Under the bonnet sits a 2.3-litre turbodiesel four-cylinder, producing 187bhp. A six-speed manual gearbox mated to an all-wheel-drive system is standard, but a seven-speed automatic is on the options list.

The new Nissan Navara Trek-1° brings more robustness to the brand’s pickup truck family. Available in double cab specification , and limited to only 400 examples, it’s on sale now in the United Kingdom from €35,065 ($46,207).

It’s based on top of the range-topping Tekna grade and adds a host of additional features that boost its visual and practical appeal, such as the black sport styling bars, additional LED spot lamps attatched to the top section, black side styling bars, and 18-inch alloy wheels that are exclusive to it.

Nissan has also added the so-called ‘smart new load bed cover’, which is made from high-grade durable plastic and can be finished in black or white. Beneath lies a load bed divider and liner that keeps loads secure during transportation, helped by the restraint system.

Each unit of the Nissan Navara Trek-1°, whose name takes inspiration from the geographical location of the Navarre desert in Spain, comes with a choice of two exterior colors: Black Metallic or Storm White, with the latter being limited to the special edition.

It also benefits from the NissanConnect infotainment system with satellite navigation and DAB digital radio, 360-degree around view monitor, leather seats, heated front seats, rear parking sensors, and LED headlights, among others.

Power comes from the 2.3-liter diesel engine that delivers 190PS (187hp). On average, it returns 44.9 UK mpg (37.4 US mpg / 6.3 l/100 km) when mate to the six-speed manual gearbox, and 40.1 UK mpg (33.4 US mpg / 7 l/100 km) with the 7-speed automatic. All versions feature the on-demand four-wheel drive as standard.

World debut for limited edition Nissan Navara Trek-1°

NISSAN has launched a new special version of its award-winning Navara pick-up, with a host of additional extras added to the already-high standard specification.

Badged the Trek-1°, the car has made its world debut at the Brussels Motor Show. The name relates to the geographical location of the Navarre desert in northern Spain – at -1° of longitude – from which the Nissan Navara takes inspiration for its name.

The Nissan Navara is the current holder of the International Pick-up Award, thanks to its tough “go anywhere” capabilities, and outstanding performance on and off-road. Packed with smart ‘in control’ technologies, it’s the perfect partner for business and leisure use.

Exclusivity of the Navara Trek-1° is guaranteed. Only 1,500 examples will be built, all in Double Cab body style. Each is based on the Navara’s flagship Tekna grade, with a number of desirable extras fitted as standard.

These include black sport styling bars, with two powerful forward-facing LED spot lamps attached to the top section, giving a finishing touch that’s practical and stylish.

The Navara Trek-1° also comes with black side styling bars, black 18-inch six-spoke alloy wheels and a smart new load bed cover. Made from high-grade durable plastic and finished in black or white, it’s hinged at the end closest to the cab and lifts easily using a single gas strut at either side.

This practical addition offers exceptional security, allowing more valuable loads to be hidden from view. Beneath the cover is a load bed divider and liner, which will keep loads secure during transportation. It’s fitted into the load bed’s C-channel restraint system, allowing it to slide forwards and backwards for ease of access and loading.

Optional extras on the Trek-1° include leather seats, heated front seats and eight-way adjustment on the driver’s seat. A powered sunroof, tow bar, differential lock and full-sized spare wheel are also available.

The Trek-1° is available in two striking exterior colours – the new-to-Navara Pearlescent White and Black Metallic.

Customers who want a six-speed manual gearbox can opt for the 160 PS or 190 PS versions of the 2.3-litre twin-turbo diesel engine, while those wanting a seven-speed automatic transmission can select the 190 PS. All versions offer ‘on-demand’ four-wheel drive as standard.

The Nissan Navara is the pick-up that’s both tough and smart. Every Double Cab comes with unique-in-segment multi-link rear suspension for a superior ride, plus a number of safety technologies including Forward Emergency Braking, Vehicle Dynamic Control, Hill Descent Control and Hill Start Assist.

As it’s based on the range-topping Tekna grade, the Navara Trek-1° also benefits from the NissanConnect infotainment system with satellite navigation and DAB digital radio, 360° Around View Monitor, rear parking sensors and LED headlights.

The Nissan Navara Trek-1° is on sale now in Belgium, and will be launched in other European markets in the coming weeks.

Navara Trek-1 2018 start up and turn off issues.

Hi all. I have 2 issues. 1st- Yruck always starts on the button, nut after driving a very short distance, break and truck alomst stalls. Soon after truck drives fine. 2nd. Turn off engine. Single, very audible "pop" noise from front somewhere. Any thoughts or solutions greatly appreciated.

Szóval szuper a szállásom, Lefteris a tulajdonos nagyon jó arc! Kaptam tőle egy kisebb hátizsákot, ezért úgy döntöttem,   hogy a mai túra után visszatérek a hegyeken keresztül levágva a távolságot.   A   j ó szállás itt nagy kincs, meg kell becsülni. Agios Athanasios területén pedig nagyon bizonytalan, hogy sikerülne -e valamit találnom.

Paleokastritsa környezetét, mint a sziget legszebb részét említik. A falucska méltán viseli e megtisztelő címet, hiszen természeti szépségei egyedülállóak a szigeten.

Paleokastritsa partvidékét hatalmas sziklák borítják, öbleiben a víz ezernyi árnyalatával találkozhatunk. Strandjai sziklásak, kavicsosak. Természeti kincsei közül említést érdemelnek a különböző sziklaképződmények és érdekes alakzatok, valamint a kristálytiszta tengervíz. Összesen 2 félsziget és 5 kis öböl alkotja a csipkézett partszakaszt, melynek szépségét nem veszik el a szállodák és egyéb szálláshelyek, melyek a partok közelében épültek. Az öblök igazi búvárparadicsomot jelentenek, a tenger élővilága itt igen gazdag.

Érdemes csónakázásra indulni, a sziklákban több érdekes barlangot fedezhetünk fel. A település legismertebb része a hármas öböl, ahol a hagyományok szerint egykor a phajjákok vendégszerető népének városa volt. Homérosz szerint itt talált rá a hajótörött Odüsszeuszra a phaják király leánya, a hókarú Nausika. Sőt, még az Odüsszeusz előtti időkben is híres volt az öböl, az aranygyapjút kereső argonauták is megpihentek itt.

A csodálatos Ortodox monostor talán a sziget második leghíresebb látnivalója! Az épületegyüttes Paleokastritsa központjában egy dombon áll, ahova egy kiépített aszfalt úton juthatunk fel. Állítólag a legrégebbi monostor a szigeten és a mai napig is szerzetesek lakják, akik itt élnek és alkotnak. A monostor korabeli feljegyzések alapján 1228-ban épült, ám mai formáját csak a 18. században nyerte el. A monostorban megcsodálhatunk egy gazdagon díszített templomocskát, melyet Máriának szenteltek, illetve egy ikonfestő múzeumot is berendeztek, amelyben rengeteg korabeli tárgyat nézhetünk meg. A monostor kertje meseszép virágokkal és növényekkel tarkított, és innen látni az alattunk elterülő  paleokastritsai öblöket és sziklákat is. 

A falu felett 160 méterrel magasodik Angelokastro vára. A hegycsúcs elég nehezen megközelíthető, egy meredek ösvényen kell felkapaszkodni. A vár egyik utolsó bástyája volt az Epiruszi despotatusnak, vagyis az ortodox fejedelemségeknek, melyek tovább éltek a Bizánci Birodalom széthullása után. A nevét építőjéről kapta, II. Mikaél Angelos fejedelemről, illetve a vár közepén található Arkangyalok kápolnájáról.

Paleokastritsa a legismertebb és minden bizonnyal legszebb korfui üdülőhely. A fölötte magasodó hegy egyik pontját nem véletlenül keresztelték Bella Vista, vagyis Szép Kilátás névre. A kávézó teraszáról elénk táruló kép világviszonylatban is a legszebb panorámák egyike. A két öblöt keskeny földnyelv választja el, a sziklákat buja növényzet fedi. A helybéli fiatalok megirigyelték az acapulcoi sziklaugrók dicsőségét, de nem a turisták kedvéért, csak saját szórakoztatásukra végzik veszélyes mutatványukat.

A tengerből kiálló sziklaszirteket érdemes hajóval vagy vízibicikli közelebbről is megnézni. Több kisebb sziklaüreg alakult ki itt. A barlangok aljáról visszaverődő napfény a tenger vizén áthaladva csodálatos kék és zöld színeket hoz létre, melyet a helybéli csónakosok szívesen mutogatnak.

A legszebb panorámát a festői szépségű Lakones falu kilátójából csodálhattam meg, ahová egy meredek gyalogos ösvény vezet Paleokastritsa-ról. Állítólag a   világ 10 legszebb kilátással bíró pontja között tartják számon, mondjuk én ezzel vitatkoznék....   Több kávézó épült itt, hogy a látogatók megpihenhessenek, de nem újdonság, hogy egyik sem volt még nyitva. Nem sokkal ezután a Corfu Trail általam leginkább várt gyalogos szakasza,   rálátással Agios Georgios tengerpartjára egy oldalról kikövezett ókori szekér úton.

A nap szomorú krónikájához tartozik, hogy egy kisebb útvonal tévesztés miatt egy 1,40 magas bozótos kellős közepén találtam magam,   ahol visszanézve 1 óra alatt tettem meg 80 métert......!!! A tövisektől szétszabdalt lábaim állapotára nincs jó kifejezés, még „utolsó üzenet” videót is készítettem az utókornak, tisztára 127 Hours érzés volt.

Célom elérése után a visszaút a hegyeken keresztül gyógyír volt sebeimre, nagy találkozás Spiroval, aki 1977-es évjáratú Nissan F-10 autójával elhozott egy darabig.
