Lionel Rosemount of Frontline Tours, a wonderful tour guide

Purely by chance we stayed at the Regina Hotel and found Lionel from Frontline Tours in the Market Square. He took us on a wonderful afternoon tour. I kept in touch with Lionel from Australia and with the aid of the Australia Army Unrecovered Soldiers Unit Maps, Lionel took us to where D Company of the 48th Battalion, Australian army stepped off on 12 October 1917 and showed us what they faced as they advanced up a shallow gully, bounded by a railway line on the left. My Great Uncle, Harry Dyson died in that struggle that day. The whole experience was very moving. I am sad that Lionel was forced to stop his tours as he was a wonderful and considerate guide. His father and grandfather both were significantly involved in the two great European wars which helped inform his excellent commentary. Thank you so much, Lionel. Darryl and Dianne Dyson and Trevor Phillips I selected April 2021, but the tour was mid 2012

From the moment we met Lionel he had us completely enthralled! Amazing knowledge and an absolutely remarkable and lovely character! Nothing was too much trouble, he was happy to veer off subject if we had questions that went a bit off piste, He knew so many little stories that added so much to the main points of the tour. I will 100% be going back to the area next year and visiting with Lionel again. I can highly recommend this to anyone

Lionel was a wonderful guide. We only had two hours, and he first gave us an overview of WW1 and the place of Ypres in it. Very knowledgeable. We then went to Essex Farm Cemetery where the poem « In Flanders Field » was written. So moving! We then visited the trenches. Combined with our Museum visit, it brought that devastating event to life.

Only had one morning in Ieper and done no prior research. Picked up a flier for frontline tours in our accommodation the night we checked in and booked our tour easily online for the next morning. Now wish I had done prior research so that we could’ve done more and/or longer tours with Lionel. Nobody else was on our booking so we had a private tour for the price of a group tour. Very knowledgeable guide that handled a very large topic expertly to give us a great 2hr tour. Would definitely recommend this company and I will use it again whenever I return to Ieper.

We booked in advance. Given the tours stellar reviews here. The guide was extremely knowledgefull, entertaining, open to suggestions, conversations. I have never been on a guided tour before with such a dedicated guide. We were slightly off season. And we got a tour just for us (couple). This tour will (no pun intended) take you into the trenches of WW1.

My wife and I are history buffs and I am disabled and a wheelchair user. Mr. Roosemont was both thoughtful regarding my limitations and ensured that I was able to see and learn a lot. He picked us up from our cruise port in Zeebrugges and made certain to return us on time. His knowledge of the North Salient and Ypres is without question, so too is his practical knowledge of what time of day to visit particular sites to avoid crowds. I give him my full recommendation, as both a person interested in history (who already knew the basics) and as a wheelchair user. I never thought I would be able to see actual trenches!

Tour with the expert

The four hour tour passed too quickly. Lionel Roosemont sets the scene and then delivers an excellent tour customised to the customer's requirement. He is the local expert with a world view and an appreciation of the history of the period as well as detailed information on the sites and what happened at them. Not to be missed.

Thank you for your generous comment. Customized tours indeed particularly add value.

Lionel was fantastic from the moment of the first email. He tailored our private tour to include the highlights relating to Australian forces and was highly organised. I loved how he could send your imagination back in time with humanising stories, photographs and incredible site visits. I am not a military history buff (I organised this tour for my husband) but I loved this experience and would highly recommend Frontline Tours. Lionel is a wealth of knowledge and passionate about history, his home town and making your experience as memorable as possible. From Alex (Australia)

Thank you for your encouraging comment. Yes, the Australians have indeed made a huge contribution here in Belgium.

This was an excellent tour. My wife's grandfather fought in the area as part of the New Zealand contingent. Lionel customised the tour specifically for us and gave us a real feeling of where he most likely was and the challenges he and thousands of others faced. Lionel is extremely knowledgeable and passionate.

Thank you for your generous comment. Yes, the New Zealand contingent played a big role compared to the number of inhabitants in New Zealand!

My girlfriend and I just did the Mine tour and the Northern Salient tours last week. Lionel was a great host and we thoroughly enjoyed both experiences. The detail and exhibits that were provided were the best I've seen. The choice of sites and the time spent at each one was just right. What we also really appreciated was how Lionel tried to get our heads into the same mind set of the characters involved in the conflict which helped set the scene. My girlfriend was sceptical about the whole trip initially, but following the tour she had completely changed her mind and was very taken by the whole experience. Well worth the money. I will be returning to Lionel at some stage in the future I am sure. Thank you

Thank you for your generous comment. It is a special joy to get sceptical people interested into the tour

My family and I took the 4-hour tour of the northern salient yesterday. Our tour guide Lionel was amazing. He took the time to walk us through the historical background of the Great War and provided context and personal stories to make each stop come alive. He does this with a perfect blend of respect and humour. You can read all the books you like about this war, but there is nothing like seeing the battlefields first-hand with someone who knows what he's talking about. Our 13-year old son was completely engaged. Thanks, Frontline Tours. Thanks, Lionel.

Thank you for your generous comment. It's always a special pleasure when the young are captivated by the events.

We recently booked Frontline Tours for a 4 hour private tour on the recommendation of another family member. We found Lionel to be a superb guide; extremely knowledgeable and passionate about his subject as well as very friendly and helpful. We corresponded with Lionel before our trip as we were eager to visit some specific locations where our relatives had fought, and he was very willing to fit in our requests. He picked us up from our hotel and he had even done some research beforehand on those locations of special interest to us. As well as his informative comments as part of the general tour, when we stopped at cemeteries he also gave us useful time to wander and have our own private reflections. Lionel said at the beginning of our tour that the time would pass quickly and it certainly did! We learned a great deal in that short time and I would highly recommend Lionel and Frontline Tours to anyone wishing to visit the Ypres battlefields.

Thank you for your very appreciative comment. It was special joy to be of your help

Where should I stay while visiting Québec City?

Québec City offers a variety of neighborhoods and accommodation options, each with its own charm and atmosphere. Excellent for exploring on foot. Cons: Can be busy, especially during peak tourist seasons. Saint-Roch: Pros: A trendy and vibrant neighborhood with a mix of boutiques, cafes, and art galleries. It offers a more local and contemporary vibe. Cons: Not as historic as Old Québec, but still lively. Saint-Jean-Baptiste: Pros: Known for its bohemian atmosphere, this neighborhood has a diverse range of shops, restaurants, and historic architecture. Château Frontenac History

Construction of the Château Frontenac

The Château was the brainchild of William Van Horne, president of the Canadian Pacific Railway, who wanted to build a hotel to draw travellers as a way to promote luxury train travel.

The Construction of a Dream

  • 1893: Opening of the 170 rooms hotel
  • 1899 to 1924: Addition of 3 wings and the central tower that is close to 80 metres high (260 feet)
  • 1926: The Riverview wing, the original section of the hotel, was destroyed by fire.
  • The Château stands on the Saint-Louis Forts and Châteaux archaeological site, which was, for over 200 years, the official residence and seat of the French and British governors.

Destination of Choice for Celebrities

Many famous people have made the Château Frontenac their residence during their time in Québec City. From Queen Elizabeth II to Céline Dion, via Princess Grace of Monaco, Leonardo DiCaprio, Paul McCartney and Charlie Chaplin, celebrities have made the Château Frontenac their home away from home.

In 1953 the Château Frontenac was used for the filming of Alfred Hitchcock’s  I Confess  starring Montgomery Clift and Anne Baxter. The Château Frontenac’s manager at the time, George Jessop, plays himself in the film.

A Crucial Political Decision

The First Québec Conference was held at the Château Frontenac in 1943. British prime minister Winston Churchill and American president Franklin D. Roosevelt were hosted by Canadian prime minister Mackenzie King as they agreed on plans for the upcoming allied invasion of occupied Europe.

Did you know?

  • The Château Frontenac is said to be the world’s most photographed hotel.
  • The Château Frontenac was named in honour of Louis de Buade, Compte de Frontenac and governor of New France from 1672 to 1682 and 1689 to 1698.
  • If you went jogging in the hotel, you’d find a total of 12 kilometres of hallways.
  • There are close to 2,000 windows with spectacular views of the St. Lawrence River, the city and the interior gardens.
  • The executive chef collects some 650 litres of honey every year from 4 hives in the Château’s private rooftop garden.

Visiting inside the Chateau Frontenac Hotel on a guided tour in Quebec City

Guided Tour of the Fairmont Chateau Frontenac Hotel in Quebec City - Tour Review

An honest review of my experience with Cicerone Tours in Quebec City

Over the years, I have visited Quebec City a few times, once for the Carnival de Quebec winter festival and another time as a field trip during a French language immersion program with the Explore program. When I had the chance to return for the day in the summer of 2021, I really wanted to focus on major attractions I didn't get the chance to explore on previous trips. I had certainly seen the iconic Fairmont Chateau Frontenac Hotel from the outside, but I had never stepped foot inside and I thought a guided tour would be a good way to learn more about the history of both the hotel and the city.

I booked this one hour guided history tour as part of a package with a bus tour from Vieux Quebec Tours and I paid for it myself, so this is a completely independent review.

You can read a  detailed summary  of all the experiences I had with Cicerone Tours on a guided tour of the Chateau Frontenac Hotel or jump straight to my  final recommendation  at the end.

Quick Overview of the Chateau Frontenac History Tour with Cicerone Tours

Destinations : This tour focused on the the Fairmont Hotel Chateau Frontenac in Quebec City, we stayed in the hotel and on the surroundings grounds on the Dufferin Terrace area behind the hotel for the entire tour, we did not walk around any other parts of the city.

How long was the tour:  This guided tour of the Chateau Frontenac Hotel lasted about 1 hour.

Who was on the tour : There were about 12 people on this guided tour of the hotel, mostly Canadians and a few Americans, mostly all on summer vacation to visit Quebec City. There were some teenagers and pre-teens but there were no young children on this tour.

Who was the guide:   This Quebec City hotel history tour had one guide. He was easy to understand and completely bilingual, very energetic, engaging and often funny and provided facts and commentary about the Chateau Frontenac Fairmont Hotel. You won’t have trouble finding the guide because they are dressed in a traditional, historic costume. The guide also had a binder with a number of reference pictures for explaining various historical events.

How did we travel:  This history tour took place entirely within and around the hotel so we just walked, we occasionally had to go up and down stairs but the hotel did have elevators if needed.

When did I take this tour:  August 2021.

Chateau Frontenac 1884 Pavilion Terrace

1884 Pavilion Dufferin Terrace

The predeparture information specified where to meet the guide at the 1884 pavilion on Dufferin Terrace behind the hotel. I had a bit of trouble locating it on Google Maps so I would have appreciated a picture of the meeting spot so I knew what to look for. However, the guide was there in historic costume so you probably won’t miss it. The guide definitely attracts some attention and we had some random people try to join in with our tour even though they didn’t have bookings !

Chateau Frontenac History Walking Tour in Quebec City

Walking outside the hotel

The tour started on time and we spent about fifteen or twenty minutes outside learning about the history of the hotel and a bit about the founding of Quebec City, the history of French Canada and the role of the Canadian Pacific Railway Company in designing and building the hotel. It is now also a National Historic Site and is managed by Fairmont Hotels. This portion of the tour was outside and we were standing, so just dress for the weather to be comfortable. We then all walked as a group around the building and entered the lobby through the main doors.

Chateau Frontenac Hotel History Tour Quebec City

Chateau Frontenac Lobby

Once inside, the guide pointed out a number of architectural features and construction materials, mentioned when and where renovations were done and provided other interesting facts about the decor and various objects and items around the hotel. Due to this tour taking place on a busy summer weekend, we were unable to view several of the rooms highlighted on the website because there were weddings happening that afternoon.

Chateau Frontenac Wine Cellar

As an alternative to the ballroom, which was closed for an event, we were able to see the extensive wine cellar, which had historically been a laundry area until it was renovated. I thought it was interesting and I probably would never have seen this room if I just visited the hotel myself without a tour guide.

Chateau Frontenac Museum Displays.jpg

Chateau Frontenac Hotel Museum Displays

Next, we moved on the the lower level which has a few little shops and a Starbucks and also hosts some museum style exhibits and displays of artefacts, paintings and other historic items. The guide gave an overview of some highlight items and suggested we return when the tour was done if we wanted to see every exhibit in detail. There were also washrooms on this level if needed.

Chateau Frontenac Bar .jpg

Back upstairs, we briefly visited the 1608 bar and attached restaurant area which has a beautiful design and decor and some very expensive bottles of whiskey on display ! Usually the tour would visit the historic Rose Room, but that again was being used for a wedding, so this was an alternative.

Chateau Frontenac Tour Dining Room.jpg

Dining Room

One of the last stops was a dining room with historic wood details and fireplaces, it was yet again being set up for a wedding but we managed to sneak in anyway and the guide told some stories about famous gatherings that had taken place there.

As we walked between the various stops, the guide would often point out random interesting objects around the hotel like statues and a golden mailbox and explain their significance. The tour ended back in the main lobby where the guide provided suggestions for further places of interest to visit in Quebec City.

Chateau Frontenac Walking Tour Review

Final Recommendation :

Hotel chateau frontenac history tour with cicerone tours in quebec city.

I thought this tour provided the experience as described on the Cicerone Tours website. I booked this tour as part of a package along with an open top bus tour sold by Vieux Quebec Tours and I had no issues contacting the company directly by email to reserve a place on the history tour.

The website was fine to navigate in English or French, email communication and pre departure information was sufficient, although I would have appreciated a picture of the tour meeting point to confirm I was in the right place.

The guide was genuinely nice and knowledgeable about the hotel, and obviously very experienced. I thought he addressed French Canadian history in a respectful way and made a point of getting to know people on the tour and his commentary was both informative and often funny without being inappropriate or political.

In terms of accessibility, we walked down staircases a few times, but the hotel does have elevators available.

I think an important thing to be aware of is that the rooms that you actually see in the hotel will be subject to availability, which is noted on the Cicerone Tours website. One woman on our tour was really excited to see the Rose Room and it was closed for a wedding, so if you wanted to see a particular room or area, maybe don’t book on a busy weekend or inquire in advance about what would be open to view.

Overall, I found this to be an informative activity on my fourth visit to Quebec City. Actually going inside the hotel and learning about the history was a nice way to get some context for the rest of my visit and I though the time went by really quickly, I was never bored and would have enjoyed seeing even a few more rooms ! Overall, I felt the value was there with this hotel tour especially as part of a package deal with the bus tour I did earlier in the morning.

Front Line Tours

Customer ratings and reviews.

I have just finished my first trip with Front Line Tours to Nashville TN. What a wonderful experience and destination. Words simply cannot describe the fabulous hosts Celine and Gerry and the expert driver Ken. they made the longer days on the bus seem to fly by with various games, movies, music, snacks, jokes etc.etc.. and Gerry even entertained us with several songs on his guitar. They all really went above and beyond to make sure that "everyone" was safe and happy and were able to enjoy their trip fully no matter what curve balls were thrown their way. I highly recommend this tour company but also these specific tour employees. KUDOS to a wonderful job!!

We went on the tour to Montreal and Quebec it was amazing. Harvey our driver and Wayne and Kathy were so much fun. Everything was well planned, with wonderful guides in both Montreal and Old Quebec City. We had excellent accommodations, better then if we drove and had to find a hotel on our own, nice places to eat. Everyone at Front Line is so great to deal with. We would like to book with them again for another trip.
