Compared to the other parts of the state, Southern Illinois is significantly different in terms of nature and the landscape. When it comes to things to do in Southern Illinois, you will never run out. It is a beautiful region with interesting attractions you should not miss when you visit. In this article, we listed some of the things you would not want to miss when you visit Southern Illinois along with other useful tips to make your trip more exciting.

1. TRAVEL THE PAST BY VISITING SOME HISTORIC SITES

Fort kaskaskia.

A couple of miles south of Ellis Grove, Fort Kaskaskia is located next to the river. The French constructed it in 1759 to defend themselves against British attacks. Today, all remains are lonely barriers around the perimeter, a burial ground from the late 1800s and breathtaking views. It is a nice spot for a picnic, with grills and tables openly available.

If you are into French colonial structural design, check out the Pierre Menard Home, constructed in 1802 for the person who became the first lieutenant governor of the state. Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site

Another site to go if you are a history buff is Cahokia Mounds, which is located about 13 kilometers northeast of St. Louis, Missouri. This is North Mexico’s biggest pre-Columbian settlement. It was occupied mainly throughout the

Mississippian period

With a lot of satellite mound centers and copious remote villages and settlements, it’s a remarkable example of a complex chiefdom society. This beautiful society is believed to have had 10,000 to 20,000 between the years 1050 and 1150. The main features at the location include the biggest prehistoric earthwork in the continent, Monks Mound, which covers more than 5 ha and stands 30 meters tall.

Lewis & Clark State Historic Site

Thos 14,000 square-foot exhibit area has 6 galleries that showcase the story and history of the Lewis and Clark excursion from its beginning to its significance for what America is today .

The Lewis and Clark State Historic Site honors Camp Dubois, the 1803-1804 winter camp of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. It was at Camp Dubois where Corps of Discovery members set their trip to the Pacific Ocean.

Today, they offer kid-friendly exhibits that offer a chance for hands-on engagement. A renovation of the winter camp, Camp Dubois, is situated on the grounds close to the visitor center. The design of this place imitates 1803 U.S. Army guidelines for the military posts construction. There are interpreters on-site in the camp every day to explain more of the history.

2. DISCOVER THE WILDLIFE RESERVE

Cypress creek national wildlife refuge.

Situated in the southernmost part of Illinois, Cypress Creek National Wildlife Refuge covers parts of Pulaski, Johnson, Alexander, and Union Counties. This refuge was built in 1990, which meant to protect, restore, and maintain bottomland and wetland forests. 

Cypress Creek offers an excellent home for freshwater bird and other animals, along with many endangered species. The objective of this refuge is to support biodiversity and to educate the public about nature and give them the chance for recreational activities like bird watching, fishing, as well as nature photography . 

3. SEE THE HISTORIC BRIDGE

One of the unique things to do in Southern Illinois is to visit a historic bridge. Funded by tolls, The Old Chain of Rocks Bridge was built in the year 1929 as part of the famous Route 66. In the year 1967, a new bridge that carries I-270 was built over the Mississippi and shut down the old bridge. It was left abandoned for 31 years. During that period, this bridge was included in the 1981 film called “Escape from New York” which was named as the 69th Street Bridge.

This bridge also had a bad name for crimes and violence while it was unused due to rape and murder that took place here. In the year 1999, the bridge was formally reopened for the use pedestrian and bicycle riders after renovated and its security have improved. 

Today, at the length of one, the Old Chain of Rocks Bridge is the longest bridge for bicycles and pedestrians in the world. The bridge extends to the Mississippi River and offers an important connection in the b-state trails system, which connects to Missouri’s St. Louis Riverfront Trail and Illinois’ MCT Confluence Trail. In the year 2006, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places for its rich and interesting history.

4. EXPLORE THE FOREST IN SOUTHERN ILLINOIS

Situated in southern Illinois, the natural beauty of Shawnee National Forest is perfect for every type of outdoor activities. Settled between the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers, the landscape of the forest features forests, rolling hills, open lands, creeks, lakes, and rugged cliffs. The mild weather of the area all year round makes it a perfect destination for traveling any season.

The Shawnee National Forest is popular for its breathtaking Garden of the Gods and is where the Rim Rock Recreational Trail located. If you are planning to hike, expect to be greeted by wonderful huge walls of rock covered with bright green moss, and trails that roam through canyons below the canopy of the forest.

Some of the must-see locations include Jackson Falls, sited close to the town of Ozark in Shawnee National Forest’s Hidden Springs Ranger District. 

5. HAVE SOME SNACK WITH A DASH OF HISTORY

Ariston cafe.

If you want to have a unique approach to America’s history, then make sure to check out Ariston Café. Author Michael Wallis labeled this café as “one of the best the old road has to offer.” As soon as you set your foot here, you can easily tell why.

The owners, Demi and Nick Adam, serve exceptional food and offer excellent service with reasonable rates while continuing the tradition that Nick’s late father began in the year 1924.

Putting up a business in the pits of the Great Depression throughout the 1930s may not be the best idea as per many people, however, Pete Adam along with his partner Tom Cokinos proved otherwise when they opened the Ariston Café in 1935 in Litchfield, Illinois along Route 66.

The Ariston Café now stands out as an erratic survivor of family-run businesses that thrived along the Mother Road throughout the mid-21st century. 

6. WATCH THE BEAUTY OF THE REGION FROM ABOVE

Soaring on a 150-foot bluff, the chaotic world seems to simply go by as the eeriness and wonder of the Mississippi plain is sprawling underneath your feet. LaRue Pine Hills is possibly the best spot to make the most of the beauty of the Shawnee National Forest.

From the top of the decomposing limestone ridge, suitably called Inspiration Point, you are able to look off to the south, north, and west part of the state and see the majestic Mississippi River. Wonderful nature has formed one of the most diverse and naturally rich environments in not only Southern Illinois but as well as the Midwest. The steep limestone cliffs yield to vibrant swamplands that are copious in rare vegetation and environment. Underneath, you will find the only used roads shut down two times a year for snake migration.

7. SEARCH FOR THE GRAND FORCES OF EROSION

While the words little and grand are not commonly used together to describe something, this site proves that they can collide. The Little Grand Canyon is located along the valley of the Big Muddy River and has a huge area of sandstone that has gradually worn into the canyons that we enjoy today. Hiking the 3.6 loop trail is the best way to experience this place. This will allow you to see the two-side canyon that both direct you to the main canyon. The erosive force has formed sinkholes and curves that will leave you in awe. 

8. WANDER AROUND THE STREETS OF A GIANT NATURAL CITY

Giant city state park.

Your trip to Southern Illinois wouldn’t be complete without exploring Shawnee Hills. This is a 4,000-acre park that boasts long miles of hiking trails, which of course, includes beautiful sceneries along the way. The Giant City Nature Trail is the most popular trail in the park that guides you through the Giant City’s sandstone "streets".

On top of that, the park is home to one of the most rural and gorgeous lodges in the state. Built in the 1930s, this nature-made stone lodge is famous all over the state not only for its pleasant atmosphere as well as its home-fried chicken!

This makes it perfect for camping at the Johnson Creek Recreation Area , located on a finger of the lake. It’s also a great launching spot for hiking, kayaking, fishing, and biking. Remember to bring water shoes to climb and splash in the Kinkaid Lake Spillway ! Located at the end of Kinkaid Lake , this three-level waterfall and pool can help you cool down on a hot day. Lake Shelbyville

For an educational experience in Southern Illinois, bring kids to the Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site. Located near Collinsville just across from East St. Louis, this historic park features an interactive museum built on an ancient Mississippian native settlement, aka the mounds. Though the interpretive center is closed until further notice for renovations, families can still learn more about this prehistoric native civilization by exploring the property by themselves or taking a guided tour. Guided tours are available Wednesday through Sunday at 1 PM. In addition to various trails on the north side of Collinsville Road, most of which are family-friendly, kids will also get the chance to climb up Monks Mound , the largest earthwork in North America. Plus, you can experience an ancient sun calendar, Woodhenge. Don’t forget to visit the gift shop for a cute souvenir to take home! 

Road Trip Along Route 66

Drive on one of America’s oldest highways when you take a family road trip on Route 66! This scenic byway stretches across Illinois, featuring fading neon signs, drive-in theaters, and retro gas stations. Families will find plenty of places to stop for a fun photo or explore. Start in Litchfield, where kids can cool off at Milnot Beach at Lake Lou Yaeger. For lunch, a stop at the famous Ariston Cafe is a must. Then, enjoy a movie at The Litchfield Skyview Drive-In , a 50s-themed theater! Further north on Route 66, you’ll also pass Springfield. In addition to its history with Abraham Lincoln, this sleepy city is also home to The Illinois State Fairgrounds , which runs the first week in August annually. Don’t miss the Cozy Dog Drive-In or bring kids who are true car enthusiasts to the Route 66 Motorheads Bar & Grill to see some classic cars! 

Other iconic sights along Route 66 include The Dana Thomas House , designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, Maldaner’s Restaurant , a fine dining restaurant, and Route History , a unique souvenir shop that teaches kids more about African American history in Illinois.

Big things come in small packages! We were surprised by the number of things to do in Southern Illinois. Here’s a list of 37 family-friendly things to do in Southern Illinois, grouped by region.

Southern Illinois is packed with attractions and options for families. Many of these stops are unique and could be just right for what you specifically need. Therefore, I’ve put my effort into describing the attraction instead of rating it. 

The list below is grouped by region, beginning with the very southern tip of Illinois. Scroll down to the region you’re in or read the entire post through to see all that’s available! And if you’re needing a place to stay, check out these Illinois hotels and vacation rentals.

We’ve put our feature stop at the very top of the list.

Ilinois’ Far Southern Tip

Illinois’ Southern Point is quite a place. This region was born by two rivers—the Mississippi and the Ohio—which combine to form the State’s southernmost tip. Scenic landscapes, remarkable history, and plenty of fun can all be found here. 

#1 Save the Day!

Superman, metropolis.

We chose to just have fun. It was the right choice after a week of Civil War battles and Civil Rights stops in the Deep South. So we gladly followed the Roadtrippers app to Metropolis, Illinois. 

I’ve been through my share of midwest towns but this one stole my heart. Metropolis is your typical river town with its own assortment of railroad tracks , tired brick buildings, and overgrown lawns. And then there’s Superman!

No, I’m not a Superman fan. It’s the town that make it so fun . The town is smaller than its grand name, but it doesn’t let that stop it from having a good time. You feel like that you’re visiting some silly grandpa who you can’t help but admire. 

We happened to arrive just at the close of a local Comic-Con. Stands and rides were shutting down but there was still plenty to see. Costumed superheroes strolled the streets and posed for pictures. 

Superman dominates Metropolis’ downtown area. His enormous statue protects the city courthouse from any danger that may make its way down Market Street. The 2 ton bronze statue is nearly as tall as the building behind it.

The Super Museum stands adjacent to its subject. The building is an attraction of its own, offering plenty of fun and amusement. We enjoyed the store which was packed with all things Superman, but passed on the museum. 

Various stores and some gift shops line Market street, and a number of businesses have fun with the Super theme. Lois Lane stands at the end of downtown, looking for facts on her next story.

Metropolis was a great place for a family road trip stop. As I prepared this post I was struck by how many of our photos showed us smiling. This is the stuff that great road trips are made of. 

#2 Report to Fort Massac

Fort Massac State Park is one of the coolest historic sites in Southern Illinois. For one, its history goes back several centuries. A Spanish fort may have been built in the area as early as 1540. 

The original Fort Massac served as an outpost of New France and was abandoned after the French lost their North American colonies in the French and Indian War. The native Chickasaw nation destroyed the complex sometime after 1763. 

Fort Massac is best known as a staging point for George Rogers Clark and his regiment of “Long Knives”. In 1778 Clark and his militiamen fought a campaign that won the Illinois country from British control. Important sites of the Illinois Campaign can be found all over Southern Illinois.

Today you can see Fort Massac as it would have looked around 1802, just before the arrival of Lewis and Clark. William Clark was the younger brother of George Rogers Clark, and was working with Meriwether Lewis to prepare their Corps of Discovery that would explore the Louisiana Purchase.

Illinois’ first state park sits on a beautiful stretch of the Ohio river. Be sure to look into the Fort Massac Encampment Festival and the interpretive programs held throughout the year. 

#3 Prepare with Lewis & Clark

Illinois offers a great stretch of the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail . The trail follows two of America’s greatest rivers along the forested bluffs of the Shawnee Hills. Ancient indigenous sites and remnants of New France can be seen all along the route.

Nearby National Parks can add even more to your experience. Ste. Genevieve National Historical Park offers a glimpse of what Louisiana would have looked like in the days of Lewis and Clark.

Gateway Arch National Park gives a big-picture view of the significance of the Louisiana Purchase, the Corps of Discovery, and America’s westward expansion.

Illinois’  segment of the Lewis & Clark Trail follows the pair of explorers as they made preparations for their epic westward quest . Over a dozen historic sites demonstrate what it took to put together what would become the Corps of Discovery.

#4 Canoe Among the Ancients

Experience the wonder and beauty of the Cache River wetlands at this internationally recognized wildlife refuge .

Paddle amid 800 hundred year old bald cypress trees at Eagle Pond or enjoy flocks of migratory birds. See if you can catch a glimpse of the Indiana Bat, an endangered species that lives at this refuge.

Cypress Creek’s bottomland hardwood forests harbor both local wildlife and migratory waterfowl. The refuge is also one of the few wildlife parks to be located along the Trail of Tears National Historic Trail.

This natural space offers a way to travel back in time and consider centuries of natural, indigenous, and United States History.

#5 Trek the Trail of Tears

Southern Illinois holds a unique stretch of America’s tragic trail. The Cherokee experienced extreme hardship as they made their winter journey across this region.

The Illinois segment of the Trail of Tears NHT includes several historic and natural sites.

Gaconda saw the crossing of the Cherokee into the state of Illinois. Illinois is one of the few places where trail ruts can still be seen. Trail of Tears State Forest and Cypress Creek National Wildlife Refuge offer landscapes largely unchanged from the 1830s. 

Hamburg Hill is the chief Trail of Tears Landmark in Illinois. The Cherokee suffered in freezing temperatures as they waited for the Mississippi River to thaw. Local landowners refused to allow them to camp on their land or cut down wood for warmth.

Trail of Tears State Park lies just across the Mississippi in the state of Missouri.

#6 Bike the Tunnel Hill State Trail

Take in South Illinois’ scenic beauty via this 45 mile bike trail. The Tunnel Hill State Trail follows original railway paths to bring you through some of Illinois’ most beautiful countryside. The trail intersects the River to River Trail (see below), the Trail of Tears (see above), and the Cache River State Natural Area (#8).

#7 Hike the River to River Trail

Looking for something epic? The River to River Trail challenges you to hike the distance between Illinois’ two great rivers. The 160 mile trail runs from the Mississippi River on the west to the Ohio River on the East.

This trail guides you into remote areas of the Shawnee Hills, five nationally designated natural areas, and several state parks. Landmarks include Cedar Lake, Garden of the Gods, and several beautiful views of the Mississippi River. 

A wide range of wildlife can be spotted along the trail. Keep an eye out for bald eagle, armadillo, and red fox as you pass through the forests, grasslands, and wetlands that make up this remarkable trek.

#8 Discover Illinois’ Rich Ecosystems

A wealth of natural wonder resides at Cache River State Natural Area . The 16,000 acre park is home to 113 rare and endangered species, ancient forests, and a gargantuan Cherrybark Oak Tree. 

The Park’s bottomland hardwood forest are composed of ancient, enormous cypress trees. Some of these trees are 1000 years old and one of them is the largest in the entire state. Explore this remarkable area via canoe, kayak, or the park’s 20 miles of hiking trails.

#9 Relax by the Water

Enjoy quiet waters, lush greenery, and massive stone clefts at Bell Smith Springs . This scenic area has a reputation for beauty and tranquility.

The eight mile trail system allows for easy access to the area’s clear streams and bizarre rock formations including Devil’s Backbone, Boulder Falls, and a natural bridge.

#10 Explore an Illinois Wilderness

Hike the wilderness in a quiet corner of Illinois. Lusk Creek Canyon Nature Preserve encloses the large, scenic canyon of Lusk Creek, rare native plants, and local wildlife. At 4,796 acres, you’re sure to get some moments of quiet solitude.

#11 Experience the Shawnee Hills

Ferne Clyffe is a great place to experience Illinois’ Shawnee Hills. The 2,430 acre park has long been known for its secluded waterfalls, fern covered rock formations, and wide scenic views.

The Big Rocky Hollow Trail   makes an easy and rewarding hike for the family. You can enjoy Ferne Clyffe’s rugged beauty on this 0.7 mile trail.

#12 Plumb a Pirate Cave

A notorious cave lies at the very edge of southeastern Illinois. Cave-In-Rock State Park recalls a time when pirates and outlaws terrorized America’s rivers. The 55 foot wide cave inhabits a bluff overlooking Ohio River. 

Cave-in-Rock State Park has a lot to offer families.The Park includes a playground, eatery, cabins, nature trail. Swallows nest among the river bluffs and a ferry serves people who are ready to cross the river. 

#13 Search Out the Bluffs

Wind about caves, crags, and clefts on this adventurous 1.7 mile trail . The loop trail follows the rim of a rock cliff before venturing down between tall, rock slabs.

Historic Ox-Lot Cave has hosted Native Americans as well as early pioneers.

Rim Rock National Recreation Trail includes a picnic area as well as vault toilets.

#14 Behold the Garden of the Gods

Don’t miss out on the most-loved landmark of the Shawnee Hills. The Garden of the Gods seems to combine the best of the Shawnee Hills into one place. Bizarre landforms and incredible views make this place an extraordinary excursion. 

A short trail and interpretive signs guide you through the natural history behind the Garden of the Gods.

Camping, hiking, horse riding, hunting, birdwatching, and picnicking are all welcome here. 

#15 Spot Some Wildlife

Watch river otters, white-tailed deer, and wild turkeys in action at this 44,000 wildlife refuge. Crab Orchard NWR holds an array of ecosystems including upland forests, bottomland hardwood forests, bushland, prairie, and wetlands. Nearly all of the refuge is officially designated wilderness.

It’s no wonder then that local wildlife abounds here. You’re likely to see one of the five pairs of eagles that dwell in this refuge.

Eastern bluebirds, indigo buntings, white-eyed vireos, and summer tanagers are only few of the bird species that frequent this natural haven. 

#16 Wander Through a Giant City

Ready for something weird? Giant City State Park is one of the better-known natural wonders of the Shawnee National Forest, and a great place to get active outdoors. The Park takes its name from the enormous, fantastic sandstone formations found throughout the park.

Giant City Nature Trail is the park’s most popular hike . The easy, 1 mile loop trail guides you through the “Giant City Streets”, gargantuan blocks of rock. Fern, moss, shrubs, and wildflowers, and trees lend a gentle beauty to these ancient rocks.

Giant City Lodge has its own appeal. The historic lodge was build by the CCC in 1937 and still hosts guests today. Dine at the Bald Knob Dining Room, peruse the gift shop, and stay at one of the three kinds of cabins offered by the Lodge.

This wonderful park welcomes hiking, horseback riding, rock climbing and several other activities. 85 developed campsites invite you to stay in the park. Be sure to contact the Giant City Visitor Center to get all of the information you’ll need.

#17 Celebrate African American Heritage

Hear stories of heroism and determination at the African American Museum of Southern Illinois . This grassroots museum showcases outstanding citizens of African American History. You’ll find the museum in Carbondale’s University Mall near the Science Center of Southern Illinois.

#18 Build Your Scientific Knowledge

Here’s one of the funnest destinations in the area! The Science Center of Southern Illinois is a well loved educational powerhouse. This small-but-mighty museum is packed with educational exhibits and learning opportunities. 

This interactive, reasonably-priced museum has made a name for itself. Monthly events give children the chance to get hands-on experience in scientific study.

The Center also offers an impressive array of birthday party science activities.  

#19 Get Dramatic

Mcleod theater, carbondale.

Enjoy theatrical excellence at the McLeod Theater. Southern Illinois University’s well-rated theater performs a range of productions from Shakespearian works to hard-rock musicals. The McLeod’s stage is active throughout the school year and even continues over the summer months . 

#20 Play with a Dragon

Boo castle park, carbondale.

Here’s a stop that we just couldn’t leave out. Boo Rachman Memorial Park may be the greatest kid’s park in all of Illinois. Children can scramble over a life-size dragon, talk with wizards, and defend castles at this magical place.

This privately owned park was built in memory of Jeremy “Boo” Rachman, an artistic man who died in a tragic car accident. Boo excelled in fantasy artwork and many of the park’s features are taken directly from his works. 

Boo Castle Park welcomes the public to play and explore. No entrance fee is required, but donations are always appreciated.

The Shawnee Hills host a tiny treasure. Wild flowers and rock formations make the Little Grand Canyon a favorite local excursion. A 3.4 mile loop trail offers an easy and scenic Illinois adventure.

Spring and fall are the best seasons for wild flowers in the Little Grand Canyon.

#22 Get Wet

Southern Illinois is has a lot to offer in the way of lakeside fun. The scenic beauty of the Shawnees and the quiet countryside make for ideal conditions. Southern Illinois is lovely enough to enjoy and overlooked enough to be empty!

Cedar Lake, Rend Lake, and Carlyle Reservoir are only three of the dozen of lakes found in Southern Illinois. Catch largemouth bass, canoe, and relax in lakeside solitude.

#23 Dine at a Farmhouse Brewery

Taste a new side of beer at a genuine farmhouse brewery. Beer was a home-made product for much of its history. Scratch Brewery offers an opportunity to experience beer that is both traditional and unconventional at the same time!

Scratch brewery plays with a variety of flavors and spices. A number of Scratch’s brews forgo hops for other spices and flavors.

All of their beers use locally farmed ingredients including elderberry, maple sap, hickory, juniper, and chanterelle mushrooms. This microbrewery’s drink list changes weekly and seasonally.

Scratch is well loved for its food and location as well. The rustic brewery is off the beaten path in a quiet corner of forestland.

The menu includes wood-fired pizza and a picnic plate built of locally sourced ingredients.

Southwest Illinois

Southwest Illinois may be the most historic region of the state. This region holds the ruins of an ancient metropolis, remnants of New France, Lewis & Clark’s Camp Dubois, and a historic state capitol!

Finally, St. Louis, MO is just across the river offering plenty of additional options to this fun part of Illinois.

#24 Be Inspired

Creative opportunities abound at Cedarhurst Center of the Arts . This highly-rated museum has several admirable qualities offered at an inexpensive price. 

Cedarhurst has a strong collection of works by American artists including Cassatt, Eakins, and J. Alden Weir. The beautiful Goldman-Kuenz Sculpture Park is one of the largest sculpture gardens in the midwest, featuring dozens of sculptures over the 80 lush acres.

The Cedarhurst Center of the Arts is best known for its events and activities. This is an art museum where children are welcomed and encouraged to explore the wonders of creative expression. Be sure to look into upcoming events and activities as you plan your trip to this delightful museum.

#25 Defend New France

Illinois and Missouri share a remarkable stretch of the Mississippi River. Vestiges of what was once New France still endure in small towns such as Ste. Genevieve, Missouri and Prairie du Rocher, Illinois. Fort de Chartres stands at the heart of this historic region.

This French Colonial fort began as a wooden structure but was upgraded to a stone fortification at around the outbreak of the French and Indian War (1754). 

The British won all of France’s New World colonies but quickly found that they couldn’t sustain their enormous new empire. Fort de Chartres was abandoned and fell into disrepair. 

Lewis and Clark noted the ruined fort in their journal as they traveled up to St. Louis in 1803.

Today you can inspect the French Fort at Fort Chartres State Historic Site . The reconstructed fort stands restored to the days when it served as the chief military base of the Pais de Illinois. Year-round events invite you to experience life as it once was three centuries ago. 

This remarkable state park has a lot going for it even on quiet days. It’s out-of-the-way location deters crowds. At the same time, the fort is surrounded by an array of historic French towns, buildings, and battles. 

#26 Explore a Prehistoric Metropolis

My favorite Illinois historic site is the ancient city of Cahokia . This indigenous metropolis dominated the Mississippi Valley long before the founding of modern St. Louis.

Today you can still see the remnants of this mighty city at this UNESCO World Heritage site .

Cahokia may be the best place to learn about the Mississippian Culture , an important part of North American indigenous history.

Cahokia was a sophisticated, organized city that sprawled across 6 square miles. Over 100 ruins still bear witness to the power and culture of this medieval metropolis.

Cahokia’s main features are the enormous earthen mounds found throughout the park. It’s difficult to not be impressed by the precision and planning that went into building this city.

Even today you can tell that the mounds were built with specific shapes, proportions, and placements. Cahokia’s structures held sacred, political, and memorial significance for its inhabitants. 

Monks Mound dominates the Cahokia complex. The 100 foot tall platform mound is the largest indigenous structure in the United States. The multi-level mound towers over the city’s central plaza. 

Cahokia’s visitor center is a great starting place for your visit to their remarkable site. Actual artifacts and historical reproductions help you envision what took place here. Be sure to also see Woodhenge, Cahokia’s astronomical observatory.

#27 Join the Corps of Discovery

Southwestern Illinois holds one of the most important sites of the Lewis & Clark National Historic Trail. Camp Dubois was the starting point for the Corps of the Discovery. It was here that Lewis and Clark made their final preparations for their epic quest across the American West.

Lewis and Clark State Historic Site is a great starting point for learning about the Corps of Discovery expedition . The visitor center is rich in educational exhibits including a life-size reconstruction of the expedition’s Keelboat.

Take a walk through the reconstructed Camp Dubois to learn about the men and preparations that built the Corps of Discovery.

Don’t miss the chance to get one of the best vistas in Southern Illinois! Confluence Tower provides a bird’s eye view of the confluence of the Missouri and Mississippi rivers. The tower is only a short drive from the Camp Dubois visitor center. 

#28 Chill Out at a Historic Bar

Ok, here’s a great stop for the parents! Fast Eddie’s Bon Air is one of America’s legendary bars. The establishment was bought from Anheuser-Busch in 1921 and has become legendary for live entertainment, great food, and a retro vibe.

It isn’t hard to see why this place is highly rated. Fast Eddie’s provides great live music daily. Fast Eddie’s food is well known and well loved. In the words of one happy customer “their food is good, hot, and affordable.”

Fast Eddie’s menu is built of creative and delicious dishes such as Peel-n-Eat Shrimp and Big Elwood on a Stick, a shish kebab of marinated tenderloin and grilled peppers. This beer-focused bar has 400 seats as well as comfortable outdoor areas.  

That said, this is a bar. You must be 21 years or older to enter and they only accept cash. So this is a parents-only destination.

#29 Follow Lincoln into Politics

A place with a name like “Vandalia” must have something stately in it. You can tour Illinois’ fourth statehouse in this historic community. Vandalia was Illinois’ state capitol from 1836 to 1839 and saw Lincoln’s service as state representative.

You can explore the historic state house via guided or self-guided tours. Special events include a Lincoln’s Birthday Observance in February, The Grand Levee in June, and a Christmas Open House.

Vandalia holds another distinction in United States history. This city is the terminus of the National Road , the first major, interstate roadway in U.S. History. 

South Central Illinois

#30 Make a visit to the Lincoln Family

Abraham Lincoln owned only one house in his lifetime, and that home still stands today. Lincoln Home National Historic Site may be the best place to experience Lincoln as a man and an American. The quiet, two-story building has much to tell about Abraham as a spouse, a father, a friend, and a neighbor.

This house also reminds us that Lincoln’s story doesn’t belong to him alone. He benefited from the support of his family, friends, and community. For example, Mary Todd Lincoln’s story is no less remarkable than that her husband. 

Mary was born in a rich Southern family and received an outstanding education. She bucked convention and family disapproval by marrying a commoner. These hardships would only increase with the onset of the Civil War. 

The Lincoln home tells the story of the Lincoln family from their earliest years as family right up to the Lincoln presidency. It was here that their sons were born and here that three-year old Edward died of illness.

Additionally, each room provides insight into what it was to live in frontier America in the mid-nineteenth century.

Know Before You Go

Lincoln Home NHS provides free ranger-led tours of the Lincoln home. However, the tours do require tickets and these tickets are issued on a first-come, first-served basis.

Plan ahead and arrive early to ensure the best possible experience.

There’s a lot more than one house at Lincoln Home National Historic Site. The park also includes the neighborhood surrounding the Lincoln home. Twelve additional historic houses yield a glimpse of what life was like in mid-nineteenth century America. 

Visit the homes of supporters and opponents of Lincoln, abolition activists, and personal friends of the Lincoln family. Even better, living history demonstrations take place throughout Lincoln’s historic neighborhood.

#31 Walk a Mile in Abe’s Shoes

Springfield holds one the best museums in Illinois as well as one of the best Presidential Libraries in the nation.

You can experience the life and times of the 16th president through full size replicas of key moments of Lincoln’s lifetime at this world-class museum . Two galleries tell the personal and public story of Lincoln from his birth to his death. 

Additionally, the Museum’s Treasure gallery features noteworthy artifacts from the president’s lifetime and presidency. These exhibits are regularly changing in order to preserve the artifacts and allow visitors to see new artifacts every time they visit. 

This highly-rated museum also includes a variety of educational movies as well as a well-designed child play zone. Lincoln’s Attic allows children to enter into Lincoln’s America through a variety of hands-on activities.

#32 See Double at the Illinois Capitol

How many state capitols hold two capitol buildings? Springfield allows you the chance to explore the Illinois capitol, past and present. 

Illinois’ current state capitol is historic in its own right. The ornate building was built in 1877 and crowned with a 405 foot dome. Visitors are welcome to watch sessions of the Illinois legislature from the capitol’s upper gallery seating. 

Springfield’s Old State Capitol is a reconstruction that was built during the Civil Rights Movement . This was Illinois’ fifth state house and the capitol that is is most associated with Lincoln’s service as a lawyer and lawmaker.

It was here that Lincoln uttered his famous “House Divided” speech.

#33 Build Healthy Habits

Kidzeum is a children’s museum with a twist. This highly-rated museum uses interactive exhibits and fun activities to teach children what healthy looks like. The museum’s three floors invite children to learn what’s involved in a healthy world, healthy community, and healthy body. 

By far, Kidzeum’s biggest attraction is Active Alex, a three story play structure/exhibit. Your kids can explore health and body systems as they explore Alex’s 40 foot tall body. 

NOTE: Sensory children may have difficulty with the abundance of sights and sounds of this museum.

Southeast Illinois

Explore an enormous eye, crack a case, and service a muscle car at the Children’s Museum of Illinois . This well-rated museum features numerous activities on its two floors.

The Children’s Museum of Illinois overlooks beautiful Lake Decatur and is located next to the Scoville Zoo and the Scoville Gardens. 

#35 Honor a Revolutionary War Hero

Here’s a remarkable National Park that’s just outside of Southeast Illinois. George Rogers Clark National Historical Park remembers one of the most important and most overlooked victories of the Revolutionary War. This park is a great place to learn about Illinois’ French Heritage, the Revolutionary War, and the Old Northwest.

George Rogers Clark NHP is built on the site of the most important battle of the Illinois Campaign. Clark and a contingent of French and American frontiersmen marched through the frigid, winter conditions to recapture Fort Sackville. Their landmark victory won the entire Northwest territory from the British, virtually doubling the United States. 

In spite of its name, George Rogers Clark NHP also pays tribute to the French leaders and soldiers who ensured an American victory. This contribution is evident both in the monuments as well as the visitor center. 

Here’s a fun fact: how many national memorials permit fishing? George Rogers Clark National Historical Park welcomes fishing from the Wabash River.

Also be sure to take advantage of the interpretive signs and historic weapons demonstrations that can be found at this battlefield park.

#36 Farm with the Lincolns

Visit the Illinois frontier at Lincoln Log Cabin State Historic Site . The park provides context for the life and times of Abraham Lincoln by preserving the home of his parents and neighbors. Thomas and Sarah Lincoln lived on this farm during Abraham’s years as Springfield-based lawyer. 

Additionally, this 86 acre, living history farm also includes two more historic homes. The Stephen Sargent Home sheds light on Lincoln’s legal practice in the Illinois frontier. The Moore home was the place where Lincoln bid his parents farewell before leaving to take his place as President of the United States.

#37 Take a World’s-Largest Treasure Hunt

Big things small town, casey.

No trip to the Midwest is complete without an off-the-wall, roadside landmark. So how about a town of off-the-wall landmarks? Casey, Illinois has more than two dozen oversized, everyday objects all over their town. Twelve of these items hold the distinction of being the “world’s largest” of their kind.

Casey owes its collection of giant things to Jim Bolin, a local business man who was looking for a way to give back to his home town. All but two of these giants were built by Bolin Enterprises, Inc. Take a tour of Casey, IL and see how fast you can find all of the big things in this small town.

Some of the experiences available include the wildlife room of Honker Hill Winery , the vineyard picnics of Hickory Ridge Vineyard and Winery , and the unique boutique wines of StarView Vineyards.

Grafton is a lovely unassuming small town in southern Illinois.

While it might not immediately seem like an exciting place to be, Grafton is actually full of interesting and fun activities and things to see.

For example, Grafton is home to the Pere Marquette State Park, a beautiful state park with unique natural stone formations.

There are many hiking trails as well as an active bird-watching community. If you are looking for a great trail for wildlife spotting, you should hike the 5,9 miles Pere Marquette Outer Loop.

However, if you’re tired of hiking, you could try the SkyTour, an aerial skylift providing amazing views over the Mississippi and Illinois Rivers from great heights.

For something more casual you might want to explore the local shops. Grafton is a great place for shopping for antiques and unique local goods. it’s also home to some amazing wineries.

Kid-friendly weekend getaways in southern Illinois

Here we share some ideas for a wonderful family getaway in southern Illinois.

Visit Boo castle park

Highlights: Some highlights include wizard statues based on actual wizard figures painted by Jeremy “Boo” Rochman and climbable sleeping dragons.

Jeremy Rochman Memorial Park, more commonly known as Boo Castle Park, is an exciting theme park with a touching back story.

As the name would suggest, the park was created in memorial of Jeremy “Boo” Rochman, a 19-year-old teenager who died in a car accident in the area. The park is designed as an ode to his childhood love of toy figures and painting wizard figures and his teenage interest in Dungeons and Dragons, a fantasy role-playing game.

The park has climbable sleeping dragon sculptures, castles, mazes, and more fantasy elements that are perfect for sparking the imagination in children.

The park is currently still less known, meaning it isn’t as busy as some of the more famous parks and the unique theme makes it fun for children and an interesting experience for adults.

Boo Castle Park is a great way to spend an afternoon or a few hours between other activities.

Shawnee bluffs canopy tour

Highlights: A canopy tour is a great way to experience the natural surroundings in an exciting and fast-paced way.

A canopy tour is a great way to experience the forest in a completely different and exciting way.

Using zip-lines, aerial bridges, and short hikes, a canopy tour will take you through the heights of the trees and the ground-level scenery. Alternating between fast-paced zip-lines and slower bridges is a great way to get the adrenaline going while still enjoying the nature around you.

Here is a list of more southern Illinois attractions. 

Shawnee Bluffs offers a 3-hour canopy tour including 8 zip lines and 3 aerial bridges. The longest zip line is 1100 feet and you can potentially reach a speed of 40 miles per hour.

This is a great activity for kids as hiking and other similar activities can get a little monotonous for a younger attention span.

There is a minimum age of 8 years old for the Shawnee Bluffs canopy tours.

Visit a waterpark

Highlights: Water parks can be a great way to relax during the hot summer days while keeping the kids entertained.

If you’re visiting southern Illinois during the summer you may be tempted to find somewhere to cool off and relax.

One of the best places to do so, especially with kids, is a water park.

Super Splash Park is a great choice for something relaxed as they have a standard 8-lane pool along with waterslides and a lazy river.

There is also a beach-style leisure pool, making it great for lazing around in the water or playing with the kids.

There is also Raging Rivers Water Park , which has a variety of waterslides ranging from flumes through to a vortex water ride. There is also an ‘endless river’, which allows visitors to simply float along on a 700-foot long loop.

The water parks have some requirements regarding height for the rides but all visitors are welcome to enjoy the standard pools and leisure pools.

Dog-friendly weekend getaways in southern Illinois

There are hikes ranging from beginner level through to very experienced and at various lengths.

Ferne Clyffe State Park is popular for its many hiking trails, including the Ferne Clyffe Waterfall Trail, which magnificently displays the large, impressive waterfall along with the picturesque forestry. This can connect to the Rocky Hollow Trail and become a loop trail.

Another great option is the Garden of the Gods Observation Trail, an easy hike that passes through some of the amazing stone formations in the area and includes many impressive viewpoints for observing this natural wonder.

Inexpensive weekend getaways in southern Illinois

Highlights: Camping is ideal for experiencing the local nature in a more immersive way.

Camping is an ideal way to be truly immersed in nature and is great for taking part in outdoor activities, bonding with friends or family, and relaxing away from the hustle and bustle of the cities.

Southern Illinois has many great campgrounds where you can camp inexpensively and enjoy a great range of activities and surroundings.

A great example is Camp Cedar Point , also known as Camp Manitowa . This campground was once a Girl Scout camp and is located in a National Wildlife Refuge, meaning it is great for wildlife watching and enjoying unique ecosystems.

There is also beachfront access and a swim dock to the large Little Grassy Lake.

Another example is Lake Murphysboro State Park , which surrounds the star-shaped Lake Murphysboro. This makes it ideal for water activities, such as boating and fishing along with picnicking and hiking with great views.

Many campgrounds are also pet-friendly.

Winter weekend getaways in southern Illinois

Go winter hiking.

Highlights: Winter hiking is a perfect experience for enjoying nature without the hindrance of other people and truly taking in the tranquility of nature.

While we have already mentioned hiking, winter hiking can be a completely different experience.

Winter is generally considered the off-season, meaning the trails have a lot fewer people and there is a much greater sense of tranquility and being alone in nature.

The Garden of the Gods Observation Trail in Shawnee National Forest is a great example of this as the huge natural sandstone formations really shine during the winter months when they are fully unobstructed.

Hiking during winter can also offer an easier experience for beginner hikers as the temperature and climate are easier for the physical exertion of hiking.

Explore Alton

Highlights: Alton is a great location for a winter weekend getaway with a number of unique events and beautiful sights to be seen.

Alton is a small town located near Grafton in southern Illinois and is a great spot to visit during the winter months.

1) Visit the former homes of a jazz legend and a dance legend in Alton

From here, head to the modest house in nearby Alton, IL, where renowned jazz musician Miles Davis spent his early years. That house at 1701 Kansas Ave, now known as Miles Davis Way, has since been gutted and renovated, and now serves as a community space and is open for tours by appointment.

Miles Davis isn’t the only artistic icon with roots in eastern Illinois; Katherine Dunham, one of the most celebrated Black dancers of the early 20th century, is also from the area.

Dunham’s two-story former home  now houses her sprawling collection of African and Caribbean art. The collection of tapestries, paintings, sculpture, and musical instruments spans 50 countries and more than 250 items.

On the top floor of the house, visitors will find posters from Dunham’s dance performances, as well as the paintings she would create as respite after an exhilarating show.

The property hosts community programs throughout the year and an annual intensive workshop on the Dunham Technique, a dance genre created by Dunham and inspired by ballet, modern dance, and dances from the African Diaspora. It also sits on a street that has been renamed to Katherine Dunham Place.

2) Learn about a historic expedition and take in epic views of two mighty rivers

From here, drive north for about an hour and a half to explore a different side of American history at  Camp Dubois , near present-day Hartford. From 1804 to 1805, Camp Dubois hosted explorers headed to the western United States as part of the Lewis & Clark Expedition.

The site tells the story of that historic expedition through a 14,000-square-foot museum, a reconstructed settlers’ cabin and a reconstructed campsite. The site hosts occasional historic reenactments, so don’t be surprised if you look around and feel like you’ve stepped back in time.

For a bird’s eye view of this terrain and the spot where the mighty Mississippi and Missouri rivers meet, stop at the nearby  Lewis & Clark Confluence Tower . The tower provides sweeping views of the two longest rivers in North America from up to 150 feet above ground.

The tower has three observation decks, each accessible by stairs and elevator. Exhibits about Lewis & Clark and the importance of this region on their journey are incorporated into each level, and on a clear day, visitors can even see as far as the Gateway Arch in St. Louis from the top observation deck.

3) Explore the ancient civilization of Cahokia in Collinsville

From here, make your way toward the  Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site  in Collinsville to head even further back into the history of this area. This site contains the remnants of an ancient settlement known today as Cahokia; this 2,200 parcel of land housed what is believed to have been one of the most sophisticated prehistoric native civilizations north of Mexico.

Less than half of the site—about 800 acres—is currently open to visitors. An interpretive center includes a model of the site and recreates a portion of the village, and several trails criss-cross the park, leading to key points like Monks Mound.

Monks Mound is an estimated 100 feet high, 955 feet long, and 755 feet wide. Made of soil and clay, the platform mound is the largest known pre-Columbian earthwork in the Americas.

Camping is available at the Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site, though hotels also are available nearby.

4) Get your kicks on Route 66

The next part of this road trip is where the landscape transitions to 20th century Americana. This stretch is one of the picture-perfect scenes seemingly out of historic postcards and full of quirky sites you won’t find anywhere else.

From Cahokia Mounds, head north towards Route 66 and stop in at  Henry’s Rabbit Ranch  outside of Staunton. This odd roadside attraction is part actual rabbit ranch and part homage to icons of a bygone era, like VW rabbits and old gas pumps.

This site is a replica gas station that was created for visitors. For a real historic Route 66 gas station, keep driving north to the city of Mount Olive.

In Mount Olive, you’ll find the  Soulsby Service Station , which fueled up cars from 1926 through the Great Depression and until 1991. It closed in 1993 and has since been restored to look exactly like it did in its heyday just after World War II.

While you can’t get gas at the Soulsby Service Station anymore, you’ll definitely want to stop for a photo.

5) Pay your respects to Mother Jones and check out the original Route 66 sign

From here, make the five-minute drive to the  Mother Jones Monument and Burial Site , an homage to the labor rights legend.

Several years before her death in 1930, labor rights activist Mary Harris Jones, known as Mother Jones, decided she would be buried in Mt. Olive at the Union Miners Cemetery, the only U.S. cemetery owned by a union. And she was.

Nowadays, the site serves not just as a shrine to Jones but to the broader movement for greater labor rights. The monument itself is 22-feet high and made from 80 tons of Minnesota pink granite, and is flanked by two bronze statues of miners.

From here, make a quick stop in Litchfield to check out the  Litchfield Museum and Route 66 Welcome Center .

The museum is home to the original Route 66 road sign, a well-preserved antique automobile, and several historic maps and drawings. There’s also a 1904 time capsule from the American Radiator Company.

Once you’ve gotten your history fix (maybe a snack!), prepare to be wowed by nature.

6) Take a break for boating, hiking, biking, or horseback riding

Stop at the  Shoal Creek Conservation Area  to explore 266 acres of towering Oak and Hickory trees. This natural preserve is home to an estimated 700 plant species, 70 butterfly species, and more than 70 types of birds. Hiking trails range from easy to moderate in difficulty. Best of all, admission and parking are free.

At the edge of Shoal Creek, you’ll find  Lake Lou Yaeger , a 1,357-acre human-made reservoir that’s popular among boaters and fishers in search of crappie, bass, catfish, and bluegill. During the summer, a sandy beach is open for sunbathing, and trails for biking and horseback riding are nearby.

7) Check out the giant fire-breathing dragon in Vandalia

After getting your nature fix, head east toward Vandalia and prepare to indulge your inner photographer. The final stretch of this road trip is larger than life—literally. From mailboxes to teeter totters, and even a dragon, it is teeming with giants.

In Vandalia, you’ll find the  Kaskaskia Dragon , a giant dragon which spews actual fire for about 10 seconds at a time for a dollar a pop. The dragon was created for a Halloween parade, but in the past few years it’s become a truly one-of-a-kind roadside destination.

The towering silver dragon has a 16-foot neck, built-in hydraulic system, and the capacity to spew actual fire. Visitors insert specially designed dragon coins to set off flames from a 20-pound propane tank inside the dragon.

8) Explore a gorgeous historic mansion in Altamont

From here, keep heading east toward the  Dr. Charles Wright House  in Altamont, IL. The gorgeous brick house was built in 1889 for the family of one of the area’s only doctors.

The 6,000-square-foot home has seven bedrooms and one bathroom and, at the time, cost about $35,000 to build (though this would be equal to over $1 million today!). It was the first grand house in the area to have gas lights, indoor plumbing, and a central steam-heating system.

The house had been occupied by the Wright family for three generations, but nowadays, it’s operated by a non-profit trust and hosts public tours. Much of the original furniture remains in place, and the interior looks largely like it did in 1889.

9) Walk through the longest covered bridge in the state in Greenup

After wandering that historic home, hop in the car and head east on I-70 to check out the Cumberland County Covered Bridge. The 200-foot-long bridge is the longest covered bridge in Illinois and crosses the Embarras River in tiny Greenup.

This bridge is a reconstructed version of the original, built on the site in 1832. That bridge was washed out in 1865, and its replacement was yet again wiped out in 1912.

The current bridge was built in 2000, and it looks like it may be built to last. You’ll want to get out of the car and take a stroll through to check out the gorgeous trusses that support the structure.

10) Delve into presidential history at the Lincoln Log Cabin

After a walk through the bridge, prepare to dive into presidential history with a visit to the  Lincoln Log Cabin State Historic Site . The centerpiece of the 86-acre park is a replica of a log cabin that was once home to Thomas Lincoln, the father of U.S. President Abraham Lincoln.

By the time the senior Lincoln moved in, Abraham Lincoln had already moved out of the house. The two-room saddlebag-style log cabin had two main rooms, as well as a loft space accessible by ladder. At times, up to 18 family members lived at the cabin.

Like the Cumberland County Covered Bridge, this log cabin isn’t an original. The original cabin was exhibited at the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893 and then lost, with some people believing its pieces became firewood.

The site is built around a replica cabin and two other historic homes, one of which hosted Abraham Lincoln’s last meeting with his stepmother Sarah Bush Lincoln. The property also is home to sprawling cornfields, comfortable gardens, small orchards, livestock, and even outbuildings like those that would be found on an Illinois farm in the 1840s.

11) Go big in tiny Casey

From here, head to  Casey, IL , a small town that marks the midway point between St. Louis, MO, and Indianapolis, IN. Though small itself, this tiny, one-stoplight town is filled with towering versions of all sorts of things.

Casey is home to 12 objects certified to be the world’s largest by the Guinness Book of World Records. There’s a giant mailbox, a giant rocking chair, a giant golf driver, and even an outsized pitchfork.

Prefer to create an optical illusion by posing with a giant car key? You can do that in Casey, too. Or show off your new haircut in front of the world’s largest barber pole. Traveling with a friend? Jump on the jumbo teeter totter and feel like kids again!

And while they may not officially be the world’s largest, Casey is also home to more than a dozen other big things, including a pair of giant antlers, a huge softball bat, and an oversized birdcage. In case that isn’t enough, there’s also a huge mouse trap, a supersized rocking horse, and even a giant pizza slicer.

If you’re among the people who have taken up knitting during the pandemic, you’ll want to head to  The Yarn Studio  to check out the pair of knitting needles that used to be the world’s largest. These needles are 13.75 feet long and 3.25 inches in diameter, and each weighs about 25 pounds. The store is also home to a giant crochet hook that was another previous world record holder.

Casey’s quest to become the home of big things started with a local business owner who began creating the giant objects, but its big ambitions go beyond town limits.

Head east to Marshall and you’ll find the World’s Largest Gavel, according to the Guinness Book of World Records.

That gavel is more than 16 feet long and five feet tall and sits outside the Clark County Courthouse, where Abraham Lincoln could have been found practicing the law around 1850.

Lincoln began his political career in Illinois and lived in the state when he became the 16th president of the United States in 1861.

To dive deeper into Lincoln’s Illinois roots and see a few more giant things, keep your Illinois road trip going. Head to Springfield to see the  Lincoln Presidential Library , the  Lincoln Home National Historic Site , and even the tomb that is Lincoln’s final resting place. And if that isn’t enough, head to Lincoln, IL, where you’ll find the world’s largest covered wagon carrying a giant Abe Lincoln and an onramp back onto Route 66.

SOUTHERN, ILLINOIS DAY-TO-DAY ITINERARY

Day 1: starting your southern illinois adventure.

Your Southern Illinois adventure starts in the morning in historic Mt. Vernon. Fuel up at the  Farmhouse Bakery & Café  for delectable scratch-made pastries and rich caffeinated beverages. Your group sojourn commences at the  Cedarhurst Center for the Arts , a magnificent pastiche of culture and art spanning more than 80 acres. Marvel at over 70 striking works of art on your group tour through the  Goldman Kuenz Sculpture Park  and immerse in the diverse styles and media. Afterward, head to the 33,000-square-foot heritage center and explore its four galleries, interactive learning center and performance hall.

Grab lunch at  Aneil’s Restaurant , serving the most tender smoked BBQ, burgers, catfish, ribs and other Southern favorites. If BBQ isn’t your jam, share a pie at  Joe’s Pizza & Pasta  for classic Italian American cuisine.

Groups can also make a short drive to the  Centralia Area Historical Society Museum  in downtown Centralia. Two floors of a former wholesale grocery warehouse are filled with railroading, mining, oil industry, agricultural and Civil War artifacts. Groups can also travel west to Carlyle and stop at  Ten Pin Antique Mall , where thousands of items are for sale in a repurposed bowling alley that still has the old signage, bowling lanes and scoring monitors.

There’s more history to be had at the  Jefferson County Historical Village , where your group can take a self-guided or docent-led walking tour of this unique Southern Illinois attraction. Explore a true community-inspired and built showpiece based on life in the 1800s. Over several decades, generous monetary donations, gifting of historic and other buildings, land contributions, and thousands of local artifacts collected have made the village a popular Southern Illinois attraction.

Breathe in the calming aroma of lavender when your group explores the vibrant purple fields of  Lavender Falls . This family-owned U-Pick farm has everything your group needs to unwind, like essential lavender oils, sprays, soaps, honey, lavender bundles and more.

Another tasty option is  St. Nicholas Brewing Company  in Du Quoin, a brewpub housed in a former hotel dating from 1879. Menu favorites include catfish with hushpuppies and fries, gourmet mac & cheese, barbecue pork and sourdough-crust pizzas.

DAY 2: THINGS TO DO IN SOUTHERN ILLINOIS

Venture out on a tasting tour at some of the finest local vineyards and breweries in Southern Illinois. Start in Ava at the  Scratch Brewing Company,  a farmhouse microbrewery located five miles from the pristine Shawnee National Forest. Stop in for lunch and a hand-crafted beer that will awaken your taste buds.

Travel 30 minutes southeast to Carbondale and walk off those liquid calories at the  University Museum at Southern Illinois University  (SIU). Opened in 1874, the museum represents the whole of humanity through stories, history, cultural arts and science with a focus on Southern Illinois heritage.

Just 10 minutes away at the  Kite Hill Vineyards  in the Shawnee Hills, relax with a glass of local wine and enjoy the postcard views. Plan a visit to their tasting room by appointment for a unique group activity. Located along the Ponce Wine Trail,  Monte Alegre Vineyard/Cellars  invites guests to tour the impressive wine cellar and enjoy a glass of their red or white. Sold exclusively from their vineyard, Monte Alegre wines are a true taste of the area. Both vineyards offer relaxation for something to do in Southern Illinois.

While in Carbondale, enjoy a robust dinner at  Flame , serving up char-broiled steaks, Southern-style catfish, slow-cooked prime rib and more comfort cuisine, including an extensive beer and wine menu. After dinner, head down the street for an evening show at  The Varsity Center , a performance arts venue originally home to the historic Varsity movie theater, before ending your night.

DAY 3: MORE SOUTHERN ILLINOIS ATTRACTIONS

Check into the historic  Giant City Lodge  in Makanda and enjoy quaint cabins or lodge accommodations specializing in Southern hospitality. Once your group is settled, make your way to the  Makanda Boardwalk  in the charming downtown area. The village of Makanda was incorporated in 1888 and was named after a prominent local Indian Chief. Stretch your legs and peruse the unique shops and artisanal merchandise for sale.

Those who wish to stretch their legs and explore can visit  Shawnee National Forest , which abounds with wilderness recreation areas across the state’s southern tip. A group visit to  Giant City State Park , located within  Shawnee National Forest  near Makanda, can include a hike on the one-mile Giant City Nature Trail, known for the narrow passageways threading through huge sandstone walls. Explore natural outdoor Illinois attractions on the Red Cedar Hiking Trail Twin Falls or the Giant City Nature Trail.

Enjoy a scenic drive to the eastern side of Shawnee National Forest, where the more adventures can explore the  Garden of the Gods,  the region’s most popular recreation site. Observation Trail, a quarter-mile stone path with interpretive panels describing the area’s geology, weaves through massive boulders affording spectacular overlooks of the pristine woodlands.

It’s time to relax and refuel with a glass of wine and lunch at  Blue Sky Vineyard , a few miles southeast of the park. Share a pizza, order a deli sandwich from the café and savor hand-crafted vintages surrounded by a grape paradise.

After a long day of touring Makanda, retire back at the Giant City Lodge for a low-key evening and dinner at the lodge restaurant.

DAY 4: FINAL DAY OF TRAVEL IN SOUTHERN ILLINOIS

Wake up refreshed and grab a warm breakfast at the lodge before exploring Goreville and Marion. Both towns boast unique Southern Illinois attractions that will keep your group entertained.

Pack the water bottles before you leave Makanda and head southeast to Goreville and the magnificent  Ferne Clyffe State Park . Take the Bork Falls Waterfall Trail for spectacular photo opportunities and breathtaking scenery.

Spend a few hours enjoying the pristine natural surroundings before heading to the  Longhorn Café  in Goreville for lunch. They serve classic southern staples like okra, pork fritters, catfish and fried chicken. If you’re in the mood for something different, try another local Goreville eatery.

Another option is a visit to Metropolis, which is known as the “Home of Superman.” Pay a visit to the  Super Museum , which contains one of the world’s largest collection of memorabilia relating to the TV, movie and comic book hero. Artifacts range from Hollywood costumes and props to lunch boxes, toys and food products bearing the Superman logo. Across the square, pose with the 15-foot-tall bronze  Superman Statue  by the Massac County Courthouse.

Drive to Marion and see a live show like standup comedy, a tribute band and dance performances at the  Marion Cultural & Civic Center  (MCCC). Most acts perform at night, but there are afternoon shows to enjoy.

Depending on what time the show starts, enjoy a cup of coffee at  Crown Brew Coffee Co.,  around the corner from MCCC. Enjoy a cup of award-winning brew in a warm sophisticated café setting. Choose from select international coffees made by friendly baristas.

Take your coffee and head over to the  Mandala Gardens  and immerse in the sweetly scented flora aromas. The 7-acre gardens are an unforgettable outdoor Southern Illinois attraction boasting a unique labyrinth of winding pathways through magical garden landscapes. Explore the gardens, including rock sculptures and natural settings, at your leisure.

Your Southern Illinois adventure concludes at the  Warehouse Antique Mall  in Marion for shopping. Peruse a plethora of booths displaying vintage oddities and nostalgia-inducing toys from yesteryear. You’re sure to find something unique for that special Southern Illinois souvenir.

Bell Smith Springs

The Bell Smith Springs park is a great place to go for a hike and enjoy nature. If you are looking for something different, this is the place to go. With its interesting rock formations and hidden springs, it is sure to be a fun experience.

Giant City Nature Trail

This short trail is perfect for those who are looking for a quick nature tour on one of the most scenic hikes in Illinois. The trail’s primary attractions are the 12,000-year-old sandstone bluffs and astonishing rock formations open and accessible throughout the year.

Panther Den Wilderness Quest

Considered the smallest wilderness in Illinois, the Panther Den Wilderness is bounded by the Crab Orchard Wilderness in its northern part with a portion of Three Fingers of Devil’s Kitchen Lake. The wilderness trail is a 4 to 6-mile loop with a rugged and hilly path which can be strenuous depending on the season. This wilderness also offers waters with multilayers of rock formations and sandstone bluffs perfect for canoeing.

Pomona Natural Bridge Trail

This natural bridge trail is perfect for families because of its short loop and easy route. In this trail, you can encounter bluffs, a waterfall, natural sandstone bridge, and a stream that children will love to explore.

The lakes around southern Illinois are abundant with different types of fish. This includes crappie, white bass, hybrids, largemouths, catfish, panfish, muskies, smallmouths, walleyes, and northern pikes. 

The best areas to fish are Rend Lake, Crab Orchard Lake, Kincaid Lake, sister lakes of Little Grassy and Devil’s Kitchen, and Murphysboro.

Horseback Riding

Horseback riding is also a very popular pastime in Southern Illinois. The region’s rolling hills and scenic trails make it an ideal place to explore on horseback. Riders of all experience levels can find routes that suit their abilities, and many trails offer scenic views of the Shawnee National Forest or the Mississippi River. Wildlife encounter

The Cypress Creek National Wildlife Refuge is an important part of the National Wildlife Refuge system. It was set up to protect and restore the wetlands and native wildlife which rely on the wetlands. The refuge is located between two major rivers, making it a unique and biodiverse area. Some of the wildlife found in the area include waterfowl, shorebirds, and various other wetland animals. Countless important trees can also be seen on the site, including giant cane and bottomland hardwoods.

Explaining the 2024 Solar Eclipse

Imagine being in the Middle of Everything to witness a   twice-in-a-lifetime astronomical event . If you make your way to Southern Illinois, you'll get that chance. 

What is a solar eclipse?

A solar eclipse is a rare, celestial event that occurs when the moon passes between the Earth and the sun, causing the sun to be partially or completely obscured from view as observed from a specific region on Earth. This happens because the moon's shadow is cast onto the Earth's surface, blocking or partially covering the sun's light.

When is the next total solar eclipse?

On April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse is set to occur, marking the final one visible from the United States until the year 2045.

Where will the eclipse be visible?

This celestial event will pass through a path of totality encompassing 13 states, including Illinois.

Where is the best place to view the eclipse?

While a partial solar eclipse will be visible across the entire country including much of the rest of Illinois, the special characteristics of a total solar eclipse can only be experienced within the narrow path of totality that will traverse Southern Illinois - specifically in areas such as Carbondale. It is only within this specific region and during this precise moment that you can observe the sky transitioning to darkness, resembling nighttime, as the Moon completely obstructs direct sunlight and unveils the solar corona—the Sun's outer atmosphere.

This means only residents of Southern Illinois and visitors alike will have the rare, unique opportunity to see this truly remarkable event and be witness to the rare astronomical phenomenon known as a total solar eclipse. Carbondale is on the center-line of the path of totality and will see 4 minutes and 9 seconds of totality for eclipse 2024 (nearly double what was seen in 2017). Kaskaskia Dragon , Vandalia

Is a dragon really a dragon without fire-breathing? Of course not. And this ferocious metallic statue in Vandalia agrees. On your way to experiencing something celestial, stop by this attraction for a fun dose of mythical. 

Big Things , Casey

Yes, seeing a total eclipse will make you feel small. But so will the town of Casey just off of Interstate 70. Host to a variety of larger-than-life attractions like the world’s largest rocking chair, mailbox, golf tee and driver, pencil, keys, and so much more. This town will make you feel like you’ve just stumbled upon a lost suburb of giants.

Fort Massac Encampment , Metropolis

For those history lovers, Fort Massac is Illinois’s first state park and home to a wooden fort built by French soldiers in 1757.

Superman Statue & Museum , Metropolis

Metropolis is the home of Superman! Take a photo with the 15-foot-tall statue of the Man of Steel. A statue of Lois Lane is also located nearby. And be sure to visit the world's largest collection of Superman memorabilia at the  Superman Museum .

Walker’s Bluff Casino & Resort , Carterville

Keep an eye out for a variety of hosted activities related to the eclipse, plus enjoy all the amenities on offer including a spacious indoor/outdoor pool, fine dining venues, and a variety of gaming and entertainment.

Road Trip Hotspots:  Nature Walks

Don't forget to visit a few local state parks and rolling hills to get in some of your steps and take in the wondrous beauty of the natural landscapes that surround you.

Starved Rock State Park , Utica 

Seasonal waterfalls, awe-inspiring bluffs, and rugged canyons dominate the storied landscape at Starved Rock. Rich with history and beauty, Starved Rock’s hiking trails meander through towering trees and scenic overlooks along the Illinois River. 

Matthiessen State Park , Utica

Located in central LaSalle County, approximately four miles south of Utica and three miles east of Oglesby, Matthiessen is a paradise for those interested in geology as well as recreation.

Pere Marquette State Park , Grafton

With nearly 8,000 acres of scenic beauty, Pere Marquette State Park is one of the most picturesque and beautiful locations on the Illinois River and the largest state park in Illinois.

LaRue Pine Hills , Wolf Lake

LaRue-Pine Hills is one of the most unique areas in the world. As with many places in the Shawnee National Forest, the beauty we see today is rooted in geologic history. Scenic drives, hiking, and camping are available.  

Best Places to View the Eclipse in Illinois

The Path of Totality will span across 13 states. A large section of Southern Illinois lies along the path, hitting multiple towns and cities. Take a look at the map below and see which parts of Southern Illinois lie within the Path of Totality, so you can discover which places will be best to view the eclipse! 

Marketing itself as the Crossroads of the Eclipses, this is a great spot for eclipse-chasers. Southern Illinois University is planning a public viewing at a football stadium – with NASA Edge in attendance.

Garden of the Gods, Shawnee National Forest

Situated in Shawnee National Forest, a beautiful, unspoiled wilderness area in Southern Illinois, Garden of the Gods is a perfect spot for viewing astronomical events.

Bald Knob Cross, Alto Pass

As well as being close to the point of greatest eclipse duration – Bald Knob Mountain is one of the highest places in the area. Expect low horizons and a big crowd.

Gates will open at 10 AM. Please plan on arriving by 12 Noon to experience the Partial Eclipse beginning around 12:40 PM CDT, and the Maximum Eclipse around 2:00 PM CDT.

Southern Illinois Crossroads Eclipse Festival (Carbondale), April 8, 2024

Event date(s): April 8, 2024, 1:59 pm Location: Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, Illinois

On August 21, 2017, a total solar eclipse path stretched across the entire United States, reaching its point of greatest duration (GD) a few miles south of Carbondale. This region in Southern Illinois is not only in the path of the 2017 eclipse, but also the 2024 eclipse, making it a unique location for being able to perform observations of both eclipses from the same location. Carbondale is on the center-line of the path of totality and will see 4 minutes and 9 seconds of totality for eclipse 2024, nearly double what was seen in 2017. The two eclipse paths form an intersection just south of the SIU campus around Cedar Lake.

Touch of Nature Outdoor Education Center (Makanda), April 6-9, 2024

Located in the path of totality for the 2024 Solar Eclipse, Touch of Nature is the perfect location to turn the eclipse into a fun filled experience. The second of two once in a lifetime eclipses will be taking place in Southern Illinois and Touch of Nature is in one of the most ideal spaces for the viewing of this event. For nearly 4 minutes and 9 seconds, the sun will be completely blacked out in the middle of the day!

What to Bring with You

As you travel down to Southern Illinois, you might be wondering what essentials you'll need to bring with you to have a great solar eclipse road trip. We got you.

Bug Spray/Repellent

If you choose a remote outdoor spot to enjoy the eclipse, make sure you stay one step ahead of pesky critters and bring some bug spray to keep them away (especially if you've followed our advice and packed a tasty lunch).

Plenty of Food and Water

Depending on how early you get to your spot, the experience can last a while—and you might as well make a day of it! So bring plenty of food and water to keep you fed and hydrated—you don’t want to miss it trying to find lunch!

Make a Pinhole Projector

In a pinch, a pinhole camera/projector can help you watch the eclipse unfold in a safe way. All you need is white card stock, aluminum foil, tape, scissors, and a pin or paper clip. It's also a great project to help pass the time.

Sun Protection (Of Course!)

This should be an obvious one! Make sure you’re prepared to be outside in the sun for a while. Bring sunscreen, a hat, sun umbrellas, and anything else that'll help make your viewing experience relaxing (and burn-free).

Solar Eclipse Glasses

The actual full eclipse lasts a couple of minutes, but before it happens, the Sun, even a sliver of it, is still way too bright to look at with your own eyes. These glasses allow you to look right at it and see the outline of the moon move over.

Check the Weather!

Bad weather can impact your solar eclipse experience. Make sure you check the weather forecast. If it's looking a little cloudy, dress appropriately and cross your fingers—but it's a rare occurrence so don't let a little cloud put you off.

A Good Quality Camera

Don’t rely on your phone camera to get a good picture. If you're experienced and come prepared, you might just get that magic shot. You may need to use a “solar filter” to prevent harming your camera’s imaging sensor.
