Later this month Universal Pictures’ Trolls World Tour will make history. Previously scheduled for a theatrical release on April 10, the film is still technically slated to premiere in some theaters on that day. But it will also be arriving on video-on-demand streaming, marking the first time a studio has broken the theatrical window for a major release so it can have a day-and-date premiere on VOD.

In less than a few weeks, families hunkered down in self-isolation in North America and the UK will be able to watch the DreamWorks Animation follow-up to a loved 2016 hit from the comfort, and safety , of their own home. Here’s how you can get in on the action and what you need to know.

Trolls World Tour Release Date: How to Watch at Home

Trolls World Tour is available to rent in the UK now, as of Monday April 6. A 48-hour rental is currently available for £15.99 on Sky Store , Google Play , Amazon Prime UK and Rakuten TV .

In the US, Trolls World Tour premieres in theaters and on VOD on April 10. You will be able to stream it on Amazon, YouTube, Apple, Fandango Now, and more for the price tag of $20. You can preorder on Fandango Now here . The rental will also last for 48 hours in case you want to rewatch any or all scenes and musical numbers.

Trolls World Tour Cast

The film still follows Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberlake as the voice of lovable scamps Poppy and Branch. Other familiar voices that are also returning from the first movie are James Corden as Biggie and Gwen Stefani as DJ Suki. But a whole new voice of musical talent is joining the fray, including Rachel Bloom as Queen Barb, rock ‘n roll troll royalty, and Ozzy Osbourne as her father King Thrash. Mary J. Blige, Kelly Clarkson, Sam Rockwell, George Clinton, Kenan Thompson, and more are also adding their voices (and vocals) to the cast.

Trolls World Tour Story

The sequel picks up with Poppy (Anna Kendrick) and Branch (Justin Timberlake) as they learn they’re one of six different Troll tribes, each devoted to a different style of music, be it classical, techno, rock, or country. It’s also a chance for Timberlake to write some new jams with collaborators Kelly Clarkson, Anderson Paak, Mary J. Blige, George Clinton, Chris Stapleton, and SZA.

Everywhere That's Streaming 'Trolls World Tour' In The UK Right Now

Self-isolation is the perfect time to catch up on movies you've missed over the past year, but what about the ones you were looking forward to? Some of 2020's biggest releases been delayed and will come out later this year, while the new Trolls movie is skipping the cinema altogether. So here's how to watch Trolls World Tour in the UK , as we could all use a colourful pick-me-up.

Initially set to release on March 20 in the UK, which was then pushed to April 6, the new Trolls movie joined three other Universal releases in becoming available on-demand. You can now rent Trolls World Tour on Amazon Prime , iTunes , Sky Store , Google Play , Youtube , the BT TV Film Store, and Microsoft . The different platforms all appear to have the same price point (£15.99), but the amount of time you can rent the movie for differs on each – so check the T&Cs ahead of time.

The sequel to 2016's Trolls , World Tour sees Queen Poppy (voiced by Anna Kendrick) and Branch (Justin Timberlake) discover the vast world of their kind. Following the musical theme of the first, the different lands consist of Trolls modelled after different genres, like Rock, Techno, Pop, and Country. Instead of being threatened by the evil Bergens in the first, Poppy and Branch face Queen Barb and Queen Thrash who want to rule the Troll world with rock music.

Sure, Trolls is certainly marketed towards a younger demographic. But as is custom with kids films, there are a lot of adult jokes that go over their heads. And anyway, Trolls is the perfect excuse to not think about coronavirus for an hour and a half.

At the moment, Trolls, The Invisible Man , The Hunt , and Emma are some of the only new releases that have been made available online . Films like Mulan and No Time To Die have had their dates pushed back to later in the year, depending on how the ongoing situation unfolds. Mulan will now debut on July 24 , but there's always the possibility of it being made available to stream on Disney+, just as Artemis Fowl has.

Where to watch Trolls World Tour online

Movie theaters may be closed, but that's no excuse to forego movie night. Kids have been waiting ever-so patiently (or not so patiently) for the sequel to the 2016 hit animated film Trolls, and today, Trolls World Tour is premiering exclusively on digital retailers like Vudu , iTunes , and Amazon Prime so they can watch the film from the safe, cozy living room couch.

Trolls World Tour is not available to own at this time. All digital retailers are offering a 48-hour rental of the film priced at $19.99, and that's an important distinction you'll want to take note of before spending your money. You might balk at the thought of spending so much on a rental when most sell anywhere between $1 and $6, though it'd be wise to take how much you're saving into account as well.

Imagine taking your children to see Trolls World Tour at the theater this weekend. Would it cost $20? Maybe $40? Potentially a bit more depending on how many little ones you're bringing along and whether you're adding popcorn and soda to the mix. With a rental, everyone can watch for a single $20 ticket fee — and there are no overpriced concessions to worry about either.

Despite its name, you can watch Trolls World Tour using Prime Video whether you're an Amazon Prime member or not. Prime Video rentals are available for all Amazon customers to purchase and watch, and you might have an easier time downloading this app on your most-used device than any of the others.

How do digital rentals work?

With Trolls World Tour, and practically all digital rentals from retailers like Amazon and iTunes, you're given 30 days to start watching the film after your purchase goes through. However, once the film has been started, you'll only have 48 hours from that moment on to finish watching. After 48 hours has passed, the film will be removed from your account. That means if you start tonight, the kids could get in a whole weekend's worth of rewatches before access is revoked.

At this time, there's no word on how soon Trolls World Tour will be available to own digitally. Other kids films such as Sonic the Hedgehog and Onward have been made available to rent or purchase due to movie theater closings, with Trolls being the odd film that only allows a rental currently.

Well, folks, it’s kind of a bit of a jungle out there these days, huh? Luckily, there are tons of people out there who are trying to make things better. Some of those people happen to be movie executives. As a result of theaters shutting down due to the COVID-19 pandemic, some studios are electing to release films directly to VOD. 

Universal’s Trolls World Tour (the sequel to the first Trolls film) will officially be available to stream online the same day as its planned global theatrical release. Wondering how you can watch it? Here’s what you need to know about where Trolls World Tour is streaming .

Where is ‘Trolls World Tour’ streaming?

Trolls World Tour has been set to release in theaters on April 10. Universal Studios has made the surprising decision to release the film on digital platforms that very same day — Friday, April 10 . You’ll be able to stream the film for $19.99 from services like Amazon and iTunes. This could definitely be a lifesaver for parents of young kids who want to watch literally anything other than Frozen II for the twelve-thousandth time during the quarantine.

And Trolls World Tour isn’t the only new movie coming straight to streaming services — The Hunt , Emma , and The Invisible Man will also be available on VOD streaming starting on Friday, March 20 for those of you who don’t have kids (or a particular interest in the latest kids’ movies). 

Disney/Pixar has chosen to go the same route with Onward , even though that movie has only been out for a few weeks — it’ll be available to stream for $19.99 on services such as Movies Anywhere, Amazon, and iTunes, also starting on Friday, March 20. Onward will be on Disney Plus starting April 3.

What is ‘Trolls World Tour’ about?

If you haven’t already seen the Trolls World Tour trailer , then here’s a quick synopsis of the new movie. After the events of the first Trolls film (which, by the way, you can rent for about four bucks online right now), Branch and Poppy learn that they are only one of six different types of Trolls. Each Troll tribe is devoted to a different kind of music — pop, funk, classical, techno, country, and rock.

The ruler of the rock Trolls, Queen Barb, wants to take over the other five Troll tribes, destroying their music so rock can reign supreme. She’s joined in her endeavor by King Thrash, who is voiced by none other than Ozzy Osbourne . The movie definitely looks like it’ll be a fun, musical adventure.

Since it’s all about music, the ‘Trolls World Tour’ soundtrack is also incredible.

Justin Timberlake , who voices Branch and who did the super catchy song “Can’t Stop This Feeling” for the first Trolls film, was also involved in the soundtrack for Trolls World Tour . He recently released the track written for the new movie, entitled “ The Other Side. ” And let’s just put this out there: It’s a total bop!

Honestly, we kind of can’t wait for Trolls World Tour to be streaming. And luckily, we won’t have to wait for long! That should give us all something to look forward to in these weird days. Hooray for Trolls!

Trolls World Tour hit streaming and on-demand on April 10 rather than heading to theaters, as originally planned. As a result, the Universal family film became the first major movie since the coronavirus pandemic began to bypass theatrical release entirely, and the studio is reporting the digital release to have been a massive success.
