gambia river excursions

River tours are a popular way to explore the Gambia River and its surrounding areas. Many tour operators offer river tours that start from either Denton Bridge or Lamin Lodge. These tours usually involve a boat ride along the river, allowing visitors to take in the beautiful scenery and wildlife that surrounds the area.

One of the main attractions of these river tours is the opportunity to spot a variety of bird species that inhabit the river and its banks. The Gambia is known for its rich birdlife, and it is not uncommon to spot species such as herons, egrets, kingfishers, bee-eaters, and many others.

During the tour, visitors can also learn about the local communities that live along the river and their way of life. The river is an important source of livelihood for many people, who rely on fishing and agriculture for their subsistence.

It is important to note that visitors should not disturb the natural habitat or wildlife along the river. Littering, feeding the animals, or engaging in any other activities that could harm the environment or the animals is strictly prohibited.

Overall, river tours in the Gambia offer a unique and enriching experience for visitors, allowing them to explore the beauty and diversity of the river and its surrounding areas.

The River Gambia has been an important waterway for trade and commerce for centuries, connecting the Atlantic Ocean to the interior of West Africa. The river is named after the country it flows through, and it has been a vital resource for the people of The Gambia for fishing, transportation, and irrigation.

River tours have become a popular way for visitors to experience the natural beauty of the River Gambia and its surrounding areas. In the past, these tours were primarily used for transportation and trade, but now they offer tourists a unique opportunity to explore the river and its wildlife.

Tourists can also learn about the history and culture of the local communities that live along the riverbanks. Many of these communities have lived in harmony with the river for generations, and their way of life is deeply intertwined with the water and the surrounding ecosystem.

River tours have also become an important source of income for the local communities, providing employment opportunities and helping to support sustainable tourism initiatives. They have also helped to raise awareness about the importance of protecting the river and its wildlife for future generations.

How long will it take?

The duration of a river tour in The Gambia can vary depending on the specific tour you choose. Some tours can be as short as 1-2 hours, while others can last for a full day or more. It really depends on the length of the river you are exploring, the number of stops along the way, and the activities you will be doing during the tour.

If you’re looking for a shorter tour, there are many options available that will take you up and down the river for a couple of hours. These shorter tours often focus on bird watching and wildlife spotting, and can be a great introduction to the beauty of The Gambia’s rivers and wetlands.

If you’re interested in a longer tour, there are several options available that will take you deeper into the heart of the country’s river systems. These tours can last for several days and include activities such as camping, fishing, and exploring remote villages along the way.

What can you learn?

On a river tour in The Gambia, you can learn about the diverse ecosystems and wildlife that make their home along the river. Local tour guides can provide valuable insights into the different bird species and other animals that you may encounter, as well as the unique cultural heritage of the river communities. You may also learn about traditional fishing practices and the importance of the river to the local economy and way of life. Overall, a river tour can be an educational and eye-opening experience.

Cost of river tours?

The cost of river tours in The Gambia can vary depending on the duration of the tour, the type of boat used, and the location from where the tour starts. Prices can range from around 500 Gambian dalasis (approximately 10 US dollars) for a short tour to over 2000 Gambian dalasis (approximately 40 US dollars) for a longer tour or a tour that includes a meal or other activities. It’s always a good idea to shop around and compare prices from different tour operators before booking a river tour.

Are the river tours safe?

In general, river tours in The Gambia are safe. However, as with any outdoor activity, there are some risks to consider, such as the possibility of capsizing or encountering wildlife. Megan's review...

We have had 2 genuinely fantastic experiences with this brilliant team - our first being a kayaking trip down a stretch of the river Gambia seeing lots of wildlife and camping overnight. Today we returned from a 24-hour cruise on board the Fula Princess - 4 of us with the superb FairPlay Gambia team. Seeing hippos (including a whole family stretched out on the bank) was an experience of a lifetime as countless other wildlife along the way. The crew couldn't have been more hospitable - delicious food, a comfy bed with nets (on the top deck) and interesting conversations. Fairplay Gambia stood out to us as a social enterprise helping to support local communities which was wonderful to see. I would thoroughly recommend this great organisation for individualised and exciting trips into the heart of Gambia!

The River Gambia

The River Gambia runs from its source in the Fouta Jallon highlands, 1,120 km to the Atlantic Ocean at Banjul. The last approximately 420 km of which are in The Gambia. It contains or supports some of the most pristine environments in West Africa. These include The River Gambia National Park and the Bao Bolong Wetlands.

The freshwater habitats of the River Gambia around Kuntaur and Eastwards are home to Hippos, Nile crocodiles, Turtles, Warthog , Hyenas , African clawless otters, monitor lizards and four species of primates including Guinea baboons. The saltwater habitats nearer to the coast have two species of dolphin, saltwater crocodiles and even manatees. The country as a whole boasts a huge diversity of bird species for its small size.

From pre-colonial days until recently, the river was the main route for people/goods travelling to and from the provinces. These days tarmac roads have replaced the bush tracks and the bus service has replaced the riverboats. Leaving the river unused apart from a few fishermen and the peanut barges that still carry the annual harvest downriver.

River Gambia National Park (RGNP)

Upriver Gambia

The River Gambia National Park is situated to the West of Janjanbureh and was established in 1978.

It includes the five ‘Baboon Islands’, three of which are home to more than 80 chimpanzees.

The animals have been rescued from the illegal trade in exotic species as part of Stella Marsden’s Chimpanzee Rehabilitation Project and now live undisturbed on the islands.

While it is not permitted (or safe!) to land on the islands, it is possible to walk on the mainland with the park rangers to look for the endangered Temminck’s red colobus monkeys and to learn more about the rehabilitation project.

As a social enterprise, FairPlay strives to ensure that our style of ecotourism brings benefits to the local community. And minimises damage to the environment and supports the development of The Gambia as a whole. We believe in people over profit. Employing local people as far as possible and always on fair terms. We try to use local, sustainable products whenever they are available and prioritise ethical suppliers in our purchasing decisions.

We’ve been involved in supporting various projects in and around Janjanbureh. These include bee-keeping training, forestry projects, educational sponsorship, kayaking training for local youths, football academies and much more. Want to know more? Or would like to involve yourself with a community project in the area, we can also arrange volunteer placements.

Papa's Tours

Gambia river.

Gambia River tour with Papa's tours

We drive along the south bank of The Gambia to Georgetown , which is also called Janjangbureh.

This town is the main crossing over the Gambia river in this part of the country.

The journey is about 300 kilometers and roughly takes 6 hours. The south bank highway is newly asphalted and very smooth to drive on. But we still must take care because many donkeys, goats and sometimes monkeys also use the road.

Along the way we visit a number of small nature reserves, full of birds and wildlife. We pass small villages, rice fields and markets. That way you get a nice picture of African countryside life.

Experience the Gambia River

The countryside upstream is much quieter than the west coast. It’s a place where time goes slow.

In the evening we drive to the village of Kuntaur, where we hop on a boat to the River Gambia National Park . More than a hundred chimpanzees live here on five islands in the river.

Every evening the chimpanzees are fed by their caretakers. A great opportunity to take photos! Hippos also live in the river.

Close by Kuntaur we have a look at the Wassu Stone Circles. These are the Stonehenge of Gambia , the largest concentration of stone circles seen anywhere in the world.

Making the most of The Gambia

We're of the opinion that if you're going to come all the way to Africa you might as well see some of the continent whilst you're here!

Yellow taxis

How can I get around?

Most hotels have a taxi rank nearby. It is best to agree the price in advance and there should be a price board displaying the tariffs. Although taxis are regulated, many wouldn't pass a UK MOT test! The only public transport are Bush Taxis which cover the main routes and some bush roads, but do not run to a schedule. They are cheap and very over-crowded but are a great way of absorbing the local flavour.

Boat trip with expert guides at Chimp Rehabilitation Project camp

Private Hire

If you have an idea of places you'd like to visit, speak to your representative in resort and you'll find you can book a private guide and landrover with ease. You can plan an itinerary for either a half or full day out, and your driver will stay with you and take you wherever you need to go. It's a great - and relatively cheap - way, to see The Gambia. It is also possible to hire an African pirogue for the day to explore the creeks at your leisure.
