Rhodes To Symi Island: Day Trip Guide

by Violeta Matei | Dodecanese Islands , Greek Islands , Rhodes

Straight lines, triangles, rectangles and colors will catch your eye even from a distance. Houses on Symi Island look like toys. Even more, they look like the same toy painted in different tones. A day trip from Rhodes to Symi can be the perfect way to get a gist of this beautiful tiny island.

How To Get to Symi

Symi island at first sight from the sea, where is the greek island of symi, why visit symi, how to get to symi island can you fly to symi, greece, what you’ll find on the boat, try to find matching patterns on the hills around, taste symi shrimps or mussels saganaki (or both), take the tourist train, swim and snorkel by the clock tower in gialos port, go on a diving tour, how far is symi from rhodes, are there any beaches on symi, what to take with you to symi.

All of the above tours start and end at the harbor of Rhodes Town. Should you be willing to spend more than one day on Symi, consider taking the regular ferry instead.

As the boat gets closer to the shore, you’ll see a compact block of tiny houses that look like an architect’s mock-up rather than real dwellings.

At first sight you won’t notice any road leading to the top of the hill. As you get closer, you may see some stairways between the cheerful buildings.

Symi Island Boat

Symi Island is worth a visit, even if it’s only a day trip from Rhodes. While Rhodes is one of the islands with airports, Symi is not. You’ll have to take a ferry or a boat trip to visit it.

If you’re already in Rhodes and seeking for things to do in the Dodecanese, click here to see the day trip to Symi I took.

Located in the Aegean Sea and belonging to the Dodecanese Islands group, the Greek island of Symi is surrounded by Turkey on this northern and eastern sides. In fact, Symi is closer to Turkey than it is to Rhodes.

The view of those charming houses on the hills surrounding Gialos (or Yialos) harbour is well worth it.

Everything looks like a children’s building game. The pastel colours of the houses, the triangle-shaped roofs, the ancient windmills on top of the hill, the white stairways, the yachts and the churches are all fighting for your attention, as you approach the island by sea.

Apparently, these houses were built between 1860 and 1910. The style is similar to the one of the ancient town of Smyrna, which is the modern Izmir in Turkey (source of information here ).

Some visit Symi from religious reasons. Many churches on this island are dedicated to Archangel Michael of Panormitis . The Greek Orthodox Monastery of Taxiarchis Mihail Panormitis is the second-largest in the Dodecanese islands group.

Click here to see the latest prices and to book your day-trip from Rhodes to Symi with a stop by this 18th century monastery of Archangel Michael Panormitis.

Even though Symi counts only 2500 inhabitants living on a surface area of 65.75 sq km, this island can be the perfect place for a tranquil beach holiday. There are shops and tavernas, as well as lots of local boats you can hire to explore the island by water.

The easiest way to get to Symi is from Rhodes. Symi is a tiny island without an airport of its own. The closest Greek airport to Symi is on Rhodes. From Rhodes airport, take a bus or a taxi to Mandraki Port and then jump on a ferry to Symi. Click here to check out the ferry schedule and to book your ride with Ferry Hopper.

There’s also a ferry connection from Symi to Chalki, Tilos, Nisyros, Kos and Kalymnos. This route is operated by Saos Ferries .

There are many ways to get from Rhodes to Symi island. If you only want to visit Symi without spending a lot of money, you can take one of the day trips to Symi from Mandraki Port, with a swimming stop by St. George’s Bay.

st george's bay symi

If you prefer to spend less time at sea, you should choose a high speed boat cruise to Symi.

If you want to spend one or two nights (or even a full holiday) on Symi, you can take a regular ferry. Regular ferries are best for those who want to do their own things on Symi island rather than stick to the 3-hour visiting time imposed by leisure boat trips.

Boat Trip from Rhodes to Symi with Swimming Stop at St. George’s Bay

The reason for picking this trip above all others was that it started at 10am instead of 9am. Little did we know we were going to find such a scorching heat on Symi! Holidays during a heat wave can be challenging, especially when you don’t like to wake up early.

The boat can accommodate over 200 people. Try to show up early to catch a seat in the shadow. The journey takes more than two hours, so you’ll want to protect yourself from the sun.

rhodes to symi boat deck

There are seats on the lower deck, as well as inside the cabin. However, if you’re not a fan of gasoline smell, you’ll want to avoid the seats on this deck.

Anyway, you’ll be able to move around. The best spots, in my view, are the ones in front. You’ll feel the wind and you’ll enjoy the scenery without distractions.

  • A bar (drinks are not included in the ticket, but they are reasonably priced)
  • Shower (the shower is by the rear of the boat – you’ll be able to use it as you climb on the deck after the swim)
  • Full face snorkels to use during the swimming stop at St. George’s Bay on Symi (available for free)

Things To Do on Symi

All trips I’ve found during my holiday on Rhodes allow for three hours on the island. How much of Symi you can see in three hours depends on how willing you are to walk, as well as on the temperature. On a very hot day you won’t be able to go too far away from the water, unless you live in a very hot climate and you’re already used to that.

Unfortunately, I visited the island during the heat wave that set many areas in Turkey and Greece on fire, so I wasn’t able to explore anything but the Yialos or Gialos Port, the delicious Symi shrimps and the crystal clear waters near Symi Town. Nevertheless, I think it was a good trip.

Building watching on Symi can be so rewarding! Just grab a seat at one of the tavernas in the port and enjoy!

If you want to try a local dish, ask for a plate of Symi shrimps. These baby shrimps are delicious, with their crunchy shells and their salty taste.

Mussels Saganaki are also very nice. Make sure you eat them with Rhodes pita.

mussels saganaki

There’s a tourist train on wheels departing every hour from the port. The 45 minutes ride will allow you to see the surroundings without having to walk. We chose to have lunch and a nice swim instead. However, people who took the train said the ride was enjoyable.

You can see some photos of this tourist train here (the article is in Romanian, but you can use any automatic translation app to read it).

Walk along the dock towards the clock tower to find the entrance to the water. You can sit at one of the tables and order a coffee to be able to leave your stuff there while you go for a swim. The water has an amazing blue colour and it is full of silvery fish. The bathing area is just by the white umbrellas in the photo below. There’s no beach and the water is deep from the very beginning.

symi clock tower

Each trip consists of 2 dives with people of a similar diving experience. Most of these sites are a maximum of 20 minutes boat ride away. You need to already be on Symi island to join the tour.

Symi is at almost 64 km or 40 miles from Rhodes. Ferries cover this distance in about two hours.

Leisure boat tours take a full day, as they stop you for swimming, snorkeling and visiting various points on the island.

Symi is not a beach destination. When you visit it on a day trip from Rhodes, there’s no time to check out any beach other than the one near Gialos Harbor, which is just a tiny area with pebbles and with a handful of sunbeds and umbrellas.

If you don’t mind walking for 10 minutes, you can find Nos Beach. At least this is what the people at Manos Fish Taverna in Gialos told us. As we were heading toward this beach, we found the bathing spot near the Roloi (clock tower) and we stopped there.

All other beaches such as Pedi, Nimborio and Agia Marina require some form of transportation other than your feet. The beach at St. George’s Bay is beautiful, but the only access is by water. Anyway, if you come to Symi on a boat trip from Rhodes, chances are you’re going to stop for a swim here.

Take your swimming suit, a snorkel, sunscreen and a hat. Don’t forget your camera. Also, a towel could come in handy, particularly if you go from Rhodes to Symi on a boat trip with swimming and snorkeling stop.

symi scenery

When it comes to exploring the Greek islands, many people plan their itineraries by including only big islands. Then, they complain that they don’t have enough time to see everything. Of course you can’t see all of Crete in one week .

Even Rhodes or Corfu require at least six-seven days to cover. Why not add some smaller islands to your itinerary? You can set base on a larger island and then use boat trips and ferries to visit smaller islands nearby.

If you want to hop the Argo-Saronic islands, for instance, you can set base on Aegina and then visit Moni , Agistri , Poros etc.

In the Dodecanese, you can set base on Rhodes and visit other Greek islands in the neighborhood such as Symi, Chalki and Kastellorizo before moving on to another island cluster.

How to get to Symi

Getting to Symi Island is fairly simple, and the ferry is the best way to do it. The schedules for the ferry vary throughout the year, however, with the summer season seeing more boats plying popular routes.

Symi has two ports for ferries to arrive and depart: Symi Town and Panormitis. From Piraeus (the main port in Athens), the journey to Symi is a long one, taking around 20 hours to complete. There are also daily ferries to and from Symi to nearby major islands such as Kos and Rhodes.

Island hopping around the region is made easy thanks to Symi’s many connections with smaller islands – Amorgos, being one of them, and Kasos and Katapola among the others.

Flights to Symi are unfortunately not possible – the island does not have an airport. Everyone arrives on the island by boat. The closest airport is on the nearby island of Rhodes. Rhodes Airport is connected by direct flights to and from Athens, Thessaloniki and Heraklion (on Crete).

The flight from Athens to Rhodes takes one hour; from there the (daily) ferry from Rhodes to Symi is an hour; this is possibly the best way to arrive at the island of Symi if you’re short on time.

Getting around Symi

The best way to get around Symi would be much like most other small islands with smaller amounts of tourist traffic. The use of scooters (mopeds), taxis and walking are all the most suffice, due to the lack of connecting roads.

Between 8am and 11pm there is a bus service that leaves each hour, going from town to Pedi and via Horio. This will cost approximately 1€.

Taxis will charge a fixed rate of 10€ to Pedi and 8€ Horio

Caiques (Converted Fishing Boats)

These cool boats take tourists to various beaches such as Nimborios, Ayios Nikolas, Nanou and Ayia Marina. The cost ranges from 15€ – 25€ depending on distance.

Car and Scooter rental

Scooters, ATVs and cars can be hired from a couple of places near the port and in Pedi as well. You can also hire small boats to skipper yourself – check out Symi Coral Rent a Boat.

It is good to keep in mind that there are only a few car roads in Symi; one that takes you to Pedi , a developing beach nearby to the town, and one to Horio , the old capital and on down to Panormitis . If you are staying a while you may only need a car for a day or two.

Symi Hotels and Houses

Accommodation on Symi is not widespread. It’s mainly made up of small hotels and private houses for self-catering options. Most of these are located in Symi Town (which is also called Gialos), and mostly crowded around the port area.

There are some charming neoclassical villas that make up some of the accommodation options here. These include Marika’s Deluxe Rooms – an elegant villa with polished rooms close to the port – and Symi Nautilus Luxury Suites which boasts self-catering rooms in a stunning neoclassical mansion.

A new addition to the scene is the stunnning Hotel 1900 , a converted 19th century neoclassical mansion right on the seafront with only 4 suites and a gorgeous rooftop deck.

It’s hard to beat The Old Markets , a gorgeous boutique hotel right in the heart of the town which was once, you guessed it, the main market on the island. Rooms here are cozy and elegant and they have a huge terrace overlooking the harbour where you can have a truly memorable drinks or breakfast. We also love Marina Studios – be sure to book a harbourview room, and Kokona Hotel too, both elegant and good value.

Just around the bay from the Gialos is the town of Pedi. This is a great alternative to the busy area around the port of Symi Town. Pedi has a beach and a natural harbour that is filled with locals’ boats and boasts a good selection of places to eat and drink – and a lot of self-catering accommodation, too.

Our pick here is Pedi Beach Hotel. Alternatively, you could try Gompos Apartment with its sea views and modern interiors.

To the north of Symi Town is Nimborio. This quiet village was once the ancient capital of the island, where King Nireus (as mentioned in The Odyssey) lived. Here you should check out seaside apartments such as Niriides Hotel Apartments.

Symi restaurants and food

Food to try on syros.

When it comes to eating on Symi you’re in for a treat. There are not only many traditional Greek dishes that visitors can try out here, but also a number of local specialties that you can sample.

Many of the island’s restaurants can be found in Gialos, concentrated around its picturesque harbor, but there are also many charming tavernas – often in seaside locations – scattered across the island that will serve up memorable meals.

Fresh fish and seafood is often the name of the game here, with the catch of the day served up from the boat and onto your plate in a matter of hours.

In fact, Symi’s most famous dish – “Symi shrimp” or Simiako garidaki – is quintessential island fare. Tiny shrimps found in the area are fried to delicate and sweet perfection. They’re famous across Greece and are a must try for any foodie worth their salt.

Away from seafood, there’s a lot of other deliciousness to try out, which includes dessert dishes such as misokofti . This is a type of moustalevria – a traditional Greek pudding – but done Symi style and made from ripe fragosika (the pulp of a prickly pear), corn starch and sugar.

Also falling into the sweets category is akoumia , a tasty donut-like snack that is native to the island. Veering away from traditional Greek donuts, it’s made from cooked rice, yeast, flour, and ouzo. The akoumia is then deep fried and eaten with cinnamon or honey or both. It’s usually made at special occasions, particularly new year.

Syros Taverna, Bars and Cafes

There are many places to find delicious food on Symi. Starting with the port and town, right on the water, there is the new but highly rated Petalo Restaurant , located directly on the waterfront with gorgeous views.

Ο Λύρης in the heart of town is often described as the best and freshest seafood on the island. Here you can find the signature Symi shrimp here, as well as delectable calamari, fish and more.

To the west of town, where Toli Beach is located, you will find Taverna Dafnes on the hill with an incredible view of the water. The ambience here is like no other, and the food, equally as memorable. They are also well known for their impeccable service.

Tucked away in a more secretive and private location closer to town, you can find the beautiful family-owned The Secret Garden . The food here is outstanding, as proven by the consistent reviews. It is strongly suggested to try the feta in filo pastry with honey.

For a great bar you won’t regret visiting, try EVA Bar in the heart of town. EVA is known for its creative and unique menu, as well as its delicious cocktails and atmosphere. For a relaxing coffee or drink and a swim in the water, Giala Beach Bar , an 11-minute drive from town is the perfect spot.

Things to do on Symi

Symi is an idyllic holiday destination. Lapped by crystal clear waters, the island boasts an abundance of nature to explore, as well as interesting architecture to enjoy. Walking around its storied streets, you’ll see historic buildings and charming churches, and have the chance to sample local cuisine in down-to-earth tavernas.

It may not be as busy or fancy as Mykonos or Santorini, Symi can hold its own in sheer authenticity. Here are some of the best things to do on Symi:

Symi Beaches

You can kick off your beach odyssey of Symi at Agios Emilianos Beach . Named after the nearby chapel, this is a beautiful spot in the western part of the island. However, it takes some effort to get to, as it can only be reached by boat – but this equally makes it perfect for a secluded, desert island feel.

In the east of Symi you’ll find Agios Georgios Disalonas Beach . Backed by an enormous 300-meter cliff, this pebble beach is a stunner. It too can only be reached by boat or a short hike along a path, so make sure you come prepared if you’re walking there.

Agios Nikolaos Beach is one of Symi’s only sandy beaches. This one is also located in the east of the island and is a very popular spot for beachgoers who want to spend the entire day lounging around on the sand. It’s well organized and comes with sunbeds and umbrellas, but there are also pine trees for shade.

Located over in Pedi – in the north of the bay – is Agia Marina Beach . An idyllic location, here you can find a charming local taverna to indulge in freshly caught seafood while you look out over the glistening waters. Pedi’s main ( Pedi Beach ) is partly organized with umbrellas and sunbeds, and makes for a family-friendly spot to spend the day – it also has a couple of eateries along the shoreline.

Just south of Pedi is Nanou Beach . This pebbly beach also has its own taverna, which not only serves food and drink, but also provides beachgoers with umbrellas and sunbeds. It’s also a good snorkeling spot, so bring your mask along for aquatic adventures.

In western Symi there’s Agios Vasilios beach . Its pebbly shoreline is a peaceful place to spend the day or late afternoon, as it’s a great spot to watch the sunset. There isn’t much in the way of facilities or amenities, so come fully prepared with everything you’ll need.

There are beaches close to the capital too. The family friendly Nimborio Beach is one of them and is a popular spot that’s well equipped with amenities. Its turquoise waters can easily be reached on foot or by car. Even closer to Gialos (right near the clock tower) is Nos Beach which is often very busy.

Elsewhere, Panormitis Beach – near the monastery of the same name – is a long, sandy beach without any facilities. Due to this, it’s quiet, which makes unwinding in its picturesque setting that much more rewarding.

Monuments and museums of Symi

Monastery of Panormitis

Situated in the town of Panormitis just southwest of Gialos, the Monastery of Panormitis is an important religious spot on the island.

This monastery, dedicated to the Archangel Michael, is thought to have existed since the 14th century. It was rebuilt in 1783 and stands today as the second-largest monastery in the Dodecanese Island group.

Venetian Castle

Sitting at the very top of Gialos, the remains of the Venetian Castle – thought to have been built in the 14th century – overlooks the harbor. You can see why it was a good place to build a castle.

Previously, this was a Byzantine castle, the ruins of which can still be seen today; the emblem of the Knights of Saint John is still visible over the entrance to the castle.

Monastery of Roukouniotis

Built by the Knights of Saint John in the 15th century, the fortress-like Monastery of Roukouniotis was constructed on the remains of an ancient temple.

This white-washed building has two places of worship inside, complete with centuries-old murals painted on the walls. Make sure to look out for the ancient cypress tree just outside the entrance to the monastery.

Byzantine Wine Presses

The island of Symi has long been a producer of wine, and growing and making wines is a traditional activity that occurs to this day. Wine presses dating back to the Byzantine era have been discovered on the island.

You can see these presses – constructed from large circular stones with divots in the middle for pressing the grapes by foot – in the Kourkouliotis area. Simply follow the path from the Monastery of Megalos Sotiras.

Pontikokastro

For more ruins, head to Ano Symi – or the oldest part of the town – for this mysterious stone relic. It’s a circular structure, thought to be an ancient tomb or burial mound. Some believe it’s the Tomb of King Nireus. To reach it requires a hike up 500 steps, but the views are worth it.

Museums of Symi

Symi Nautical Museum

Being an island in the Aegean, the sea has understandably had a large impact in the history of Symi. You can learn all about the ancient and not so ancient maritime history of the island at the Symi Nautical Museum.

Opening up its doors in 1983 in a neoclassical building in Symi Town, it exhibits maps, models, and tools that have long been used in ship-building and sailing. The museum also details the sponge fishing heritage of the island.

Symi Archaeological and Folklore Museum

Another of Symi’s museums that is housed in an old neoclassical mansion, today this building plays host to three separate collections: Archaeological, Byzantine, and folklore.

The first collection details findings from various excavations that have taken place on Symi, with artefacts including pottery and coins. The Byzantine part features manuscripts and icons, while the folklore section boasts traditional costumes and everyday items.

Nature and outdoors

Thanks to its rugged, mountainous landscape, the island of Symi has some amazing landscapes to soak up and explore.

This is best enjoyed by hiking the many trails that criss-cross the island. For the best time of year to hike on Symi, try autumn as this is when the sweltering temperatures of summer would have dropped.

One particularly beautiful hike leads from Horio to Agia Marina. This 4.8-mile hike around the coastline can take around half a day to complete and provides beautiful views of the Aegean Sea along the way.

Not all of Symi’s natural treasures are above the water’s surface: some of them require a voyage under the sea. Those without scuba diving qualifications or experience can simply don a snorkel mask and explore around the rocks and cave of the island.

Symi does however have a long diving history – thanks to its history of diving for natural sponges. Diving allows visitors to see shipwrecks, caverns, and reefs hidden in the depths surrounding the island.

Taking a boat trip is something that must be done on Symi. Whether you’re catching a boat to see one of the island’s secluded beaches, or hopping over to another island for the day, the maritime history of Symi is something that is a must when you’re here.

Events on Symi

Religious events.

Easter is of course a large event on Symi, particularly around Holy Week. This is quite a solemn affair, however, and if you’re visiting at this time of year you can expect to hear church bells and see processions.

One of the island’s largest religious celebrations takes place on November 8th. This is the feast of the Archangel Michael which draws in pilgrims from far and wide who come to visit the Monastery of Archangel Michael in Panormitis. Fittingly, Michael is the patron of fishermen.

Other Events

There are also a few non-religious festivals to put in your calendar when visiting Symi.

The main one is the Symi Festival. It’s been taking place every year since 1995 and is celebrated from July through September. Expect open-air concerts with Greek musicians, dancing and theatrical events. There are no tickets and anyone can spectate.

Symi also holds its own International Film Festival , which also takes place at the same time of year as the Symi Festival. You can catch films from local filmmakers and from further afield, too

Bucket List Worthy Greek Islands For Solo Travelers

' src=

Over the years, I’ve done a lot of solo travel to the Greek islands and have a good idea of which ones you might like based on your interests.

I know choosing the perfect island is challenging and can feel overwhelming, especially with Greece’s vast selection. Then there is the added consideration of your age and whether it will be an age-appropriate island.

But don’t worry; I will review all of this in the post! I will share my top picks, and why I loved them, along with some islands, I found a little overrated.

Tips You Need To Know When Visiting Any Greek Island

Rhodes Island

Located in the dodecanese islands group, why you’ll love rhodes.

Rhodes has a completely different vibe from the Cycladic Islands. It is also one of the larger islands that operates all year round, so it is a good choice if you want to travel off-season, as in April.

I think it’s a great island for all ages, because there is a little bit of nightlife if you are interested and areas where you can get a little seclusion.

What I loved most about traveling here was that it was safe and had a lot to do. The castle and fortified city kept me busy for hours, and the beach was within a 20-minute walk!

It was also a bit more affordable than some other islands I have visited.

For example, I found a boutique hotel (10GR Wine Hotel) for 123€ a night! I thought it was a steal!

Where Is Rhodes & The Best Way to Get There

Rhodes is located most easterly in the Aegean Sea, just off the coast of Turkey.

There is a convenient airport on the island and public transportation that takes you to the Old Town for 2.50 euros in 15 minutes.

If you are starting in Athens , I recommend flying directly to Rhodes . It is too far away from the mainland to take ferries.

Overlooking a tranquil Greek seascape at dusk, a woman in a white dress stands on a balcony, embodying the peace and self-reflection found in solo travel on the Greek islands

Symi Island

Why you’ll love symi.

You’ll love visiting Symi because it’s one of the most picturesque Greek Islands I have ever visited! Reflecting on my time on Symi Island, I think of slow traveling in paradise.

Symi Island is a bit sleepy but very safe. Everyone knew everyone on this island, and you can feel a real sense of its Greek culture and community. I recommend visiting for a day or one to two nights at most.

There is no public transportation in Symi. If you plan to stay longer than just a day and want to explore more than just the main port, I recommend renting a car.

A woman in a green ruffled dress is gazing towards a beautiful hillside town by the sea. The town is densely packed with classic Mediterranean-style houses in shades of white and pastel, cascading down the hill to the water's edge where boats are docked. The sea is a deep blue and the sky is clear, adding to the idyllic coastal ambiance of the scene.

Where is Symi Located & How to Get To There

Symi is located 25 miles northnorthwest of Rhodes. The best way to reach Symi is by ferry, which takes only 1 hour to 1.5 hours from Rhodes.

👉 Check out ferry options with Ferry Hooper .

Symi does not have an airport, so the best way to get to Symi is by ferry . It is only about an hour away from the island of Rhodes.

Corfu Island

Located in the ionian islands group.

the view of corfu bright and pink sunset with the old town in the background

Why You’ll Love Corfu

Corfu is the perfect spot to take a quick solo trip if you love an interesting old town and great food!. It is super laid back and stunning.

I recommend traveling solo to Corfu in May to dodge the family vacation rush. In May the weather was warm enough to go to the beach but not too hot.

You also won’t get bored here with so much ancient history to immerse yourself in.

If you want to explore the whole island of Corfu by car you’ll find the most incredible beaches!

Where is Corfu Located & How to Get There

Corfu (Kerkyra in Greek) is located on the far northwest coast of mainland Greece! You can fly directly into Corfu and then island hop from there.

If you fly into Corfu with only a small carry-on, you can walk from the airport to the old town of Corfu.

If you are starting in Athens, flying is the easiest way to get to Corfu. There are no direct ferries from Athens to Corfu, so if you insist on a boat, you must travel through the mainland to the western side of the country.

Things To Do In Corfu

Mykonos Island

Cyclades islands.

rhodes to symi island trip

Why You’ll Love Mykonos

Mykonos is an easy place to love, but it can be a little much if you are looking for a quite place to relax. Traveling solo to Mykonos was also the first Greek Island I have ever visited.

I would highly recommend visiting Mykonos for at least 3 days to get the most out of your time there.

Mykonos is very different now from when I visited in 2010. The magic is still there, but the prices and the crowds have increased .

Depending on where you fall as a social traveler , you may want to flock to or skip this island.

🏖️ If you are looking for a party island, this is the place!

Where is Mykonos Located & How to Get there

Mykonos is part of the Cyclades Island groups in Greece. If you are traveling from Athens, you will get the ferry from the Piraeus Port.

The journey from Athens to Mykonos will vary depending on the ferry you book.

The shortest time is 2 hours 30 minutes, and the longest is up to 5 hours 15 minutes.

Mykonos also has its own international airport , making it easy to fly directly from many places to the island.

Things to Do Alone in Mykonos

  • Walking tour of Mykonos ! I highly recommend joining a group tour when traveling alone as a female. It is a fantastic way to make a few friends.
  • Take a day trip to Delos Island ! Explore the archeological site with a small group and a guide.
  • Tour remote villages in Mykonos ! This 4-hour tour is perfect for solo travelers! Spend a half day with a small group discovering hidden harbors and secret beaches.
  • Take a sunset cruise with drinks! Spend 2 hours and 30 minutes cruising around Little Venice and Mykonos , eating snacks, and watching the sunset.
  • Go on an off-road safari , visiting rural villages and stopping for a swim.

Santorini Island

As a solo female traveler, I can't say enough great things about my solo trips to Greece! It is a wonderful place to make friends, soak in the sun and

Why You’ll Love Santorini

According to Google, Santorini is by far the most popular Greek island. It has appeared in so many movies and Instagram feeds, so it’s no wonder it’s on everyone’s mind.

As far as solo female travel goes , you can feel safe traveling alone here, enjoying cotton candy sky sunsets with local wine.

The views of iconic blue-domed churches perched on dramatic red cliffs are simply beyond words.

But let me be very honest with you: though iconic and surely bucket list worthy, it might be worth skipping.

Santorini is one of those islands that is overpriced, overcrowded and can be a bit of a disappointment.

I hate to be negative, but it is the truth. I know so many travelers that have been a bit let down.

If you do go, travel in early May or October when the crowds will have thinned and the prices a bit more reasonable.

Where is Santorini Located & How to Get There

Santorini has an airport. It is common to fly into or out of Santorini at the start or end of a Greek island-hopping adventure.

⛴️ A fast ferry from Athens to Santorini takes approximately 4-5 hours.

Since it does take a relatively long time to get there from Athens, I suggest island hop your way back or fly.

Things to Do in Santorini

  • Tour the highlights of Santorini and end the day with a wine-tasting!
  • Join a bus tour of the island with Oia village sunset to finish off the day!
  • Ride on an old wooden boat to the Volcano and swim in the volcanic sulfur waters!
  • Take a day trip to the Venetian Castles .
  • Check out the most beautiful beaches in Santorini! Red Beach, Kamari Beach, and Perissa Beach are among the most popular.

Where to Stay Solo in Santorini

Milos Island

A female traveler alone in Milos Island walking by the little colored doors of the storage units by the sea.

Why You’ll Love Milos

You’ll love Milos because it has probably the most unique beach in the world.

And yes, I am talking about the famous “moon beach.” The real name is Sarakinko Beach, and it’s a stunner!

You’ll also love the incredible boutique hotels in Milos that offer the perfect island experience!

Even with increased tourism, public transit is lacking. One of my biggest takeaways was that you really need to rent a car in Milos .

Where is Milos Located & How to Get to There

Getting to Milos from Santorini takes 2-4 hours by ferry , but there’s also a small airport for quicker travel.

From Athens, it’s a swift 3-hour ferry ride, with flights being another convenient option.

Whether you’re island-hopping or traveling from the mainland, Milos is easily accessible.

📍 Grab FREE GOOGLE MAP of my favorite spots in Milos !

Things to Do Alone in Milos

  • Visit Sarakiniko Beach! This beach is so special with its make up of volcanic rock resembling a Luna formation. Head to the beach early to beat the crowds.

Sifnos Island

A solo woman sitting on the bench in Sifnos, Greece with the white homes in the background

Why You’ll Love Sifnos

The food is the number one reason you’ll fall in love with Sifnos. Sifnos is an island for the “foodies,” so if you solo travel for food, island hop here!

I highly recommend Sifnos to any female traveling alone. I felt incredibly safe and welcomed on the Greek island of Sifnos.

It is truly a hidden gem of the Greek Islands, full of amazing restaurants and idyllic beaches .

Because it is still a bit of a secret, it almost makes me hesitant to write about it.

Public transportation is limited ; renting a car is the easiest way to get around. I did not rent a car in Sifnos, but I could get around by foot or taxi to the destinations most important to me.

Where is Sifnos Located & How to Get to There

Sifnos is only a 40-minute ferry ride from Milos, making it the perfect spot for a solo travel island hop.

There is no airport in Sifnos, but there is some public transportation by bus.

There are regular ferry connections from the mainland and nearby islands, making it accessible for travelers.

📍 Grab the FREE GOOGLE MAP of all the best locations in Sifnos !

Things to Do Solo in Sifnos

  • Explore the ancient capital city of Kastro ! No cars are allowed in Kastro, and it is made up of stairs and inclines. It will not be suitable if you have any physical challenges.
  • Visit the Church of Seven Martyrs
  • Chill at one of the many beaches in Sifnos , like in Platis Gialos! Some of my favorite restaurants are also located in Platis Gialos. For more information, read the best guide to Sifnos, Greece .
  • Sample traditional Greek Food and explore the towns of Apollonia and Artemonas .
  • If you want to eat truly great food, more than just a Greek salad, enjoy delicious food at the most famous restaurant, Cantina !

Where to Stay in Sifnos

When choosing where to stay in Sifnos , consider that the island lacks public transport.

If you don’t have a rental car, you might want to stay in the main town of Apollonia .

Serifos Island

A woman in Serifos Greece at sunset with the classic greek town in the distance.

Why You’ll Love Serifos

Serifos is a vibe. It’s an authentic, laid-back island that is a really good island for solo travel if you are on a budget ! It was the cheapest Greek Island on my trip.

A good time to visit is late May or early September. The island starts to close up around the 19th or so of September.

In my case, I was leaving at just the right time, around September 20th.

Serifos does have some incredible beaches and places for hiking . You will need a car to do these activities.

There is a limited number of taxis on the island, so don’t rely on them.

Where is Serifos Located & How to Get There

Serifos is a quick 15-minute ferry ride from Sifnos, perfect for a day trip but even better for a longer stay.

A two-hour ferry ride from Athens takes you to Serifos, which has no airport. The island is walkable, and buses are available if you don’t rent a car.

Ferries from the mainland and neighboring islands make access a breeze.

Paros Island

A solo woman traveling in Paros Greece at the beach.

Why You’ll Love Paros

Paros is a great island if you can’t quite afford Mykonos but want similar vibes. It is getting a little bougie since Mykonos is so close, but still so much cheaper.

Paros is your island if you are looking for nightlife on a budget!

Where is Paros Located & How to Get to There

Paros, located in the Aegean Sea’s Cyclades, is just a 2-hour fast ferry ride from Serifos.

During the busy summer months, you can catch one of the 8 weekly ferries. With an airport near Parikia, flying could be your go-to if your island-hopping plan includes it.

Things to Do in Paros

  • Check out the town of Naoussa ! This is a place that is packed with nightlife and the best restaurants.
  • Visit the beautiful beach of Kolymbithres! Just chill all day by the Aegean Sea.
  • Go on a full-day boat trip to Delos and Mykonos ! This full-day tour leaves Paros and takes you to Delos and Mykonos!

Crete Island

Largest Greek Island

A woman standing alone in Chania, Crete at the Harbor.

Why You’ll Love Crete

You will fall in love with how much there is to see and do in Crete! It is Greece’s largest and most populated island.

If you aren’t interested in island hopping but want to see a lot on one island , come to Crete.

Crete operates all year round. If you were looking for Greek Islands to visit in February, you could come to Crete. The weather won’t be great, but you could experience island life in the off-season!

The best way to explore Crete is by renting a car. With Discover Cars , it is affordable and easy.

Where is Crete Located & How to Get to There

Crete is located 99 miles south of mainland Greece. There are 2 main towns, Heraklion and Chania, in Crete, both with an airport.

Crete is a popular island to fly into and island hop from. It is easy to reach as it has three airports , offering flights from various locations.

Y ou can also take a ferry from the mainland and other nearby islands. The ferries provide a beautiful journey across the sea to Crete, the largest of the Greek islands.

Why You’ll Love Hydra

As one of the closest islands to Athens, Hydra is a perfect Greek Island to make a solo day trip for the day ! You’ll love Hydra for all the boutique shopping and cafes where you can sip coffee.

One of the best things about Hydra is that no cars or motorcycles are allowed !

So, if your starting point is Athens, visiting the Saronic Gulf Islands, such as Hydra, is a great choice!

Where is Hydra Located & How to Get There

Hydra is located in central Greece , just off the eastern side of the Argolís Peninsula of the Peloponnese.

Hydra doesn’t have an airport, so the best way to reach it is by sea. Regular ferry and hydrofoil services leave from Athens’ Piraeus port, offering a quick and scenic trip to the island.

Which Greek Islands Should You NOT Visit Alone?

There aren’t any Greek islands that I think you should avoid if you are alone, just some things to consider.

When visiting party-centric islands like Mykonos or Ios , it’s wise to stay alert and cautious if you’re alone. Avoid revealing your solo status to groups of strangers.

Also, consider where your hotel will be located and don’t isolate yourself, I promise you it could get a little boring. I like to be within walking distance of the major attractions and restaurants.

⛴️ Good To Know: Ferry Travel in Greece

  • The ferries are often a little off schedule, especially on trips returning to Athens. Consider this when you have a departing flight on a day returning to Athens.
  • Luggage is left unattend below deck. Though I have never had an issue, I would advise you have you most valuable items on you at all times.
  • The business class seats on SeaJets are nice, but not necessary.
  • The smaller the ferry the more chances you could get a little sea sick if the ocean is choppy.

Wrapping Up

As a solo female traveler, I can’t express enough how wonderful my solo trips to Greece have been!

It’s an amazing place for making friends, soaking up the sun, and enjoying the health of beautiful experiences.
