If you ventured into the forested mountains, you might be lucky enough to spot a family of gorillas. On the island of Madagascar off the coast of Africa, look for lemurs leaping from tree to tree!

Small ship with green hull, UnCruise logo & Safari Explorer written on the side sits in calm water on a partly cloudy day.

  • Safari Explorer

safari explorer drawing

The luxury motor yacht Safari Explorer embodies an ambiance of refinement and relaxation, with just 36 guests. Her crew of 14-15 takes care of passengers’ every need. The performance-built Safari Explorer primarily cruises the Hawaiian Islands and Alaska’s Inside Passage and is notably one of the few vessels in her well-loved fleet that operates trans-Pacific voyages twice each year, spending the North American summer/fall in Alaska, and the winter/spring in Hawaii.

Why Sail Aboard Safari Explorer

Choose the Safari Explorer if you are seeking a small ship that feels like a yacht. She has upscale appointments and a yacht-like atmosphere but still feels spacious, comfortable and welcoming. Expect as much activity as you wish, with the luxury you would expect from a much larger ship, including windows in every cabin (no portholes). AdventureSmith’s founder, Todd Smith, has always called this ship the quintessential expedition ship: “I always say that once you cruise aboard the Safari Explorer, you will be hooked on small ships forever.”

She is applauded by our team as being the Goldilocks of small ships; not too big, not too small, but just the right size. She continually receives rave reviews from AdventureSmith Explorations’ staff and clients, and is a favorite for Hawaii yacht charters and luxury Alaska cruises . While the cabins and common areas are decidedly exclusive, it is her service, active itineraries and cuisine that stand out the most.

Read our detailed description of the Safari Explorer small ship, including deck plans and a photo gallery. Our expedition cruise experts have been aboard the Safari Explorer firsthand, so contact us for more information and to compare the Safari Explorer with other ships offering Alaska small ship cruises , Hawaiian Island cruises , Canada cruises and Pacific Northwest cruises . Find other small cruise ships worldwide with our expertise.

Common Areas Aboard Safari Explorer

Aboard the yacht, three public decks provide plenty of room for mingling, relaxing and enjoying the fresh air. The salon and lounge provide an inviting space with warm wood accents to be educated by lectures on the environment, wildlife, history and culture of the region. A TV screen drops down from the ceiling to provide visual accompaniment. Local experts are often invited along as special guests to “talk story” and provide insights unavailable to most other visitors. On select departures, onboard expert naturalists and guides are complemented by guest hosts in the fields of ornithology, photography, marine biology, wine and wellness, among others.

Musical instruments, guidebooks and games like mancala further encourage interaction. Large couches and a piano adorn the lounge, adjacent to a full-service bar staffed by a few rotating bartenders. A modest gear and merchandise store is available, as well as a public wash closet on the the aft of the Main Deck interior.

The Bridge Deck features five lounge chairs, four sets of tables and chairs, and abundant space to spread out to embrace the Hawaiian sun or brisk air in Alaska. A separate shaded seating area with table and patio furniture has additional seating for six. This is also where guests can take advantage of the ship’s open bridge policy, offering opportunities to chat with the officers and crew and spot marine life from their perch.

Dining Aboard Safari Explorer

The Dining Room, located on the Main Deck, provides a casual atmosphere with open seating that accommodates all guests in one sitting. Meals aboard the Safari Explorer are served over several courses, with particular attention to the personal preferences of diners. Vegetarian dishes are available, as are reduced portions. Other special dietary needs can be accommodated with advance notice.

Executive chefs create exquisite meals, using locally sourced fresh ingredients to reflect the flavors of each destination. Each day includes an early-riser breakfast starting at 6:30am of fresh fruit and squeezed juices, onboard-baked pastries and breads, followed by a full made-to-order breakfast complete with specialty items. Lunches range from pasta salads and sandwiches to homemade soups and ethnic dishes. Elegant plated dinners offer a choice of entrées, including fresh seafood and meats; a split plate is even available for indecisive eaters. Desserts are plentiful, imaginative combinations of tarts, pies, cakes and mousses.

Fine spirits, wines and microbrews are included, as are highly imaginative cocktails of the day, mocktails, rotating drafts and espressos. Hors d’oeuvres for a daily cocktail hour feature a variety of appetizers. Plus filtered water, coffee and hot tea are available for self-serve any time.

Activities Aboard Safari Explorer

Active adventure cruises aboard the Safari Explorer allow freedom to engage in many activities. Two rigid-frame inflatable skiffs operate excursions from this vessel, with each able to hold half the guests aboard along with a few members of the crew. In Alaska, skiffs are primarily used for remote shore landings, and for scenic wildlife cruising. In Hawaii, skiffs are used for accessing marinas throughout the itinerary, and for snorkeling.

A full-beam swim step makes for easy access to the water or kayaks and stand-up paddleboards (SUPs) from the stern of the vessel. The vessel carries a quiver of kayaks and SUPS, which can be used for guided outings (kayaks only) or open paddle/swim events. Important to note that different kayaks are used depending on where you cruise. In Alaska, sit-inside double kayaks are used, and in Hawaii sit-on-top kayaks are used. Also in Hawaii, the vessel will provide a dedicated snorkel set (mask, snorkel, fins) for use throughout your voyage. You can conveniently store this equipment in the cabin-assigned lockers on the back deck.

There is no guided wellness program offered onboard, but guests can find fitness equipment on the Bridge Deck in the form of weights, benches, elliptical, spin bike, yoga mats and blocks for self-use. A hot tub on the Bridge Deck is filled for cooler-weather Alaska itineraries, and the ship features a mechanized swimsuit dryer for frequent use in Hawaii and hot tub and polar plunge enthusiasts in Alaska. Other features are hiking poles for use and hydrophones for listening to below-surface sounds.

Crew & Guides Aboard Safari Explorer

Aboard Safari Explorer each crew member wears many hats and has the opportunity to hone a variety of skills. This level of variety keeps the crew connected and happy, and provides a cohesive environment. Aboard you’ll find a dedicated Expedition Leader as well as multiple guides, bosuns, chefs, a hotel manager and servers who all work together. There is 1 crew member for every 2.5 guests aboard, so there is always someone available to help make your voyage more informative, comfortable and unforgettable. “Well prepared” and “proactive” are common compliments we receive of the staff aboard this ship.

Cabins & Safari Explorer Deck Plan

Hear It From Travelers Who’ve Sailed Aboard The Safari Explorer

We've always wanted to see Hawaii but didn't want resorts or large cruise ships. This trip was very active, yet relaxed and intimate -- perfect for us.

We wanted warmth, water and whales, did Sea of Cortes in 2022, so Hawaii was the obvious choice. As usual, it was 5 star all the way.

The guides were always enthusiastic, considerate of all passengers' abilities and extremely knowledgeable. The entrees were always fresh and locally sourced. Thank you Arielle for your help and quick response to questions.

We loved the luxury of the cruise, combined with the various active adventures. Perfect!

We wanted to experience the different islands of Hawaii, and we love water adventures, so this was a perfect fit!

This was an ideal trip -- so many fun activities in a beautiful variety of Hawaiian locations, and yet without crowds and hustle-bustle. We loved the snorkeling and whale watching most. Both gave us a sense of awe at nature's variety and beauty, and the small groups with expert guides provided a rare atmosphere of intimacy. Everyone in our group of 25 was good-natured and enthusiastic. The night snorkel with manta rays was a disappointment because only one ray appeared that evening, but there were dozens of unruly tourists.

This trip was a blissful contrast to the "touristy" experience one often finds elsewhere in Hawaii. We've always wanted to see Hawaii but didn't want resorts or large cruise ships.  This trip was very active, yet relaxed and intimate -- perfect for us.

Accommodations Review

The ship was comfortable and welcoming.  Our cabin, while not large, had plenty of storage and was well appointed.

Meals Review

We thought the food was superb.  Both the chef and pastry chef offered a wonderful variety of delights at every meal, and we were always given choices.  The service was always capable and gracious

Crew & Guides Review

Our leaders (Jill Q. and Jill B) couldn't have been better.  They were highly knowledgeable, obviously loved nature and Hawaii, always positive and helpful -- they had that elusive balance of energy and even temper. They went out of their way to give us a beautiful experience!

AdventureSmith Explorations Review

The information provided and Aaron's helpfulness were great.

Traveler Advice

Try to plan some time in Hawaii before and after the cruise.  The "before" allowed us to explore another part of the islands -- and gave the airline time to get our luggage to us two days late!  The "after" gives a chance to transition from the relaxation of the cruise to the hassle of the flight home.

  • Hawaiian Seascapes Cruise

We wanted warmth, water and whales, did Sea of Cortes in 2022, so Hawaii was the obvious choice. As usual, UnCruise was 5 star all the way.

First time on Safari Explorer and it is a gem of a small ship. Somewhat larger cabin than we are used to which was nice.

Food was excellent, although the Sunday evening pa'ina (sp) meal was a bit too much after a long day out in the Hawala valley. Would have preferred to relax on the ship.

Wilson and Annie (the whale whisperer) were SO MUCH FUN. And per usual they knew a ton about everything nature, ocean, geology, etc.

Itinerary Review

[We most enjoyed]... snorkeling with sea turtles and seeing lots of whales and dolphins. We did feel that they are missing a major educational opportunity by not having any presentation about Kaluapapa (the former leper colony) on Molokai. This could have been a substitute for the aforementioned dinner at the museum.

Pack light! You never need as many clothes as you think you do. Consider your own snorkel equipment - we invested in that and I loved having a dry snorkel.

  • UnCruise Adventures

Beyond excellent in all ways! Snorkeling every day in a wide diversity of settings was our favorite activity. We also felt that all the excursions were planned so that you were fully immersed in the Hawaiian culture and experience.

Our ship quarters were compact but had ample storage even for over-packers like us.

The entrees were always fresh and locally sourced. Portion size was not overwhelming which I appreciated. You were always able to modify a dish or even request salads or oatmeal. Desserts were amazing, quality over quantity. Great specialty drinks and appetizers.

The guides were always enthusiastic, considerate of all passengers' abilities and extremely knowledgeable.

Thank you Arielle for your help and quick response to questions.

  • Arielle Lightcap

Simply fantastic. We loved the luxury of the cruise, combined with the various active adventures. Perfect!

We had wanted to see Hawaii, but are not overly enthusiastic about crowds and commercialism. We wanted to see multiple islands, but did not know which ones to pick. This cruise was perfect, since they took us to 4 different islands and arranged lots of great activities. It was especially great because everything (including the alcohol) was included in one price.

Amazingly good food!

Maria and Jess did great jobs as our expedition leader/guide. We thoroughly enjoyed the activities and their enthusiasm.

We appreciated the advance information. And my questions were promptly and accurately answered.

There was one hike that was a bit grueling for me, but they were up front about it at the beginning. In spite of that, it was good to be out in the forest in Hawaii and see some things we don't see at home.

This trip exceeded our expectations! We wanted to experience the different islands of Hawaii, and we love water adventures, so this was a perfect fit! We enjoyed all the water activities the most... mostly because that’s what we enjoy, and they were worth the effort. We saw lots of great fish, coral and other wildlife. We loved the whales, they put on quite a show! The group seemed to connect fairly quickly. Some great new friends!

The room on Safari Explorer was very nice. Bed was very comfortable!

All the meals were excellent!

We had everything we needed, and everything was well prepared for our travel and reservation.

The entire crew was amazing. They got to know us within minutes of our first encounter, and always seemed to have a genuine concern for us. Jessica and Lauren were amazing. Both we well informed and found the best opportunities for us in every situation. Always very concerned and watching out for our safety. Both had a great sense of humor, Lauren tells some pretty good jokes! Jessica was always very positive and optimistic, and authentically sincere! They were an absolute delight! I don’t remember the name of the boat driver in Kona, he drove the Black Pearl. He was very informative and a lot of fun.

Safari Explorer Itineraries

Safari explorer review, review of safari explorer.

The 1998-built MS Safari Explorer cruise ship (orignally named "MV Rapture”) is currently owned and operated by UnCruise Adventures USA . The vessel was extensively drydock-refurbished in 2008 for USD 3,5 million.

Like all UnCruise ships, Safari Explorer (IMO number 8964654) is USA- flagged (MMSI 366339000) and all American-crewed.

History - construction and ownership

The 695-ton, 36-passenger ship Safari Explorer has a navy blue hull and offers refined atmosphere, just like all other Un-Cruise Adventures ships – the expedition-style cruising is combined with luxury.

UnCruise Adventures (formerly American Safari Cruises) is a USA-based, wholly-owned cruise company, a subsidiary of InnerSea Discoveries Alaska. In 2013, the American Safari Cruises line was renamed to "Un-Cruise Adventures". Currently, the company has 2 headquarters - main headquarters in Seattle WA  and second in  Juneau AK .

Shipboard facilities and amenities

The ship has all 18 staterooms, all of which are oceanview and with private heated bathrooms. There are 6 cabin categories: Single, Master, Commander, Captain, Admiral, Commodore Suite and depending on the cabin, triples, doubles or singles can be accommodated. The ship has only 2 Balcony Suites.

The ship has an intimate Bar Salon (lounge), Wine Library, dining room (complimentary restaurant). The boat's low draft allows it to easily visit areas that bigger ships can't and offers complimentary to all passengers adventure equipment - including paddle boards, kayaks, skiffs (inflatable speed boats), hydrophone and underwater camera (linked to the lounge and all cabins' TVs). The spa area includes an on-deck hot tub (Alaska only), fitness equipment, Sauna Room, massage room. The ship also features a Sun Lounge, Lounge, Wine Bar, Bar and Library.

Itineraries

UnCruise Safari Explorer's schedule includes Southeast Alaska cruises departing from homeport Juneau AK and Hawaii Islands voyages leaving roundtrip from homeport Kaunakakai (Molokai Island, Hawaii) .

In 2024, the ship was chartered to AdventureSmith Explorations (California USA-based travel brand) for Alaskan itineraries, including in the Inside Passage and the new "Prince William Sound Explorer" (circumnavigation).

Safari Explorer Wiki

Safari Explorer cruise ship (former name "mv Rapture", until 2009) was built as a bare-bones expedition marine vessel. It emerged again after a $3,5 mill renovation in 2008 boasting 18 oceanview cabins, all offering private bathrooms with heated tile floors.

All Un-Cruise Adventures’ ships boast navy blue hulls and refined atmosphere. The Explorer ship's size makes it easy to visit areas that bigger ships cannot. This cruise ship is the best choice for those who like expedition-style cruising and activities, combined with luxury on board. The other Un-Cruise "Safari" ships are Endeavour ,  Quest  and  Voyager .

Safari Explorer - a typical expedition cruise ship - has adventure equipment that includes stand-up paddle boards and kayaks; inflatable skiffs; hiking poles; hydrophone (for listening to sounds below the surface). The bow-mounted underwater camera is linked to the yacht's lounge and to all cabin TVs.

The small-capacity Safari Explorer cruises in Southeast Alaska and Hawaiian Islands regions.

In early-February 2019, UnCruise announced a new 7-day itinerary (themed "Aloha Hawaii Adventure Cruise") part of company's "Hawaii Small Ship Cruise" 2019 program on Safari Explorer. The scheduled 6 summer departures (July-August) visit 4 Hawaiian islands. The 7-day roundtrips are from  Kaunakakai (Molokai Island)  to  Lanai Island (Day 3), Maui Island (Olowalu, Day 4), sea day (Day 5) and Hawaii Island (Da 6 Milolii / Honomalino Bay, Day 7 Kailua-Kona , Day 8 Disembarkation / Kawaihae Harbor). UnCruise operates seasonally in Hawaii since 2011. The new voyages include themed activities like sea kayaking, hiking, snorkelling, paddle boarding, wildlife viewing, skiff (boat) tours.
