2024 WSL Championship Tour preview: Full schedule and surfers to watch

The 2024 season kicks off in Hawaii on 29 January with another nine stops on the agenda that covers seven countries across four continents. Discover the competition format, full schedule and stars to watch.

Caroline Marks

Battle-ready surf champions, a slew of exciting rookies, and a countdown to the Olympic Games – the 2024 WSL Championship Tour season promises to make plenty of headlines.

All but one of the Tour's 10 stops take place before Paris 2024 and will be a chance for the top surfers in the world to test themselves before the Olympic surfing competition kicks off on the world-famous Teahupo’o wave in seven months.

The Championship Tour kicks off at the Banzai Pipeline in Hawaii on 29 January with 36 male and 18 female surfers set to compete during the regular season that spans seven countries. Fiji is back on the schedule after a seven-year break while the WSL Finals will once again take place in Lower Trestles, USA in September.

From champion surfers to up-and-coming rookies, competition schedule and format, here’s all you need to know about the 2024 season of professional surfing’s top circuit.

Format of the 2024 WSL Championship Tour

The regular Championship Tour season features nine events with 54 surfers set to take part before the mid-season cut-off in the second half of April.

Surfers will compete at five stops, in Hawaii, Portugal and Australia, before the cut-off. At that point the men’s field will be reduced to 24 top-ranked athletes and the female field to 12 athletes.

The remaining surfers will then compete in Tahiti, from 22 to 31 May, just over two months before the same venue hosts the Olympic surfing competition.

The regular season will wrap up with a return to Fiji’s Cloudbreak, a powerful left-hand barrel where athletes will have to surf waves that can reach as high as 20 feet in a bid to clinch the last spots in the WSL Final 5.

The world titles will once again be decided in a one-day, winner-takes-all competition with the season’s best surfers going head to head. The 2024 edition will mark the fourth time that Lower Trestles hosts the WSL Finals.

The Top 22 men and Top 10 women in the rankings will automatically qualify for the 2025 Championship Tour. The remaining spots - 10 for men and five for women - will be allocated to the top performers in the WSL Challenger Series. There will also be two wildcards on offer for men and one for women.

2024 WSL Championship Tour: Stars to watch

Brazil's Filipe Toledo and USA's Caroline Marks head into the 2024 season as the defending champions.

For Toledo, 2024 could be the biggest year yet. The Brazilian surfer is going for his third consecutive world title – a feat that would match the achievement of his compatriot Gabriel Medina  who has the most world titles after USA’s Kelly Slater . A reserve at Tokyo 2020 , this year Toledo also has the chance to win Olympic gold after earning a provisional Paris 2024 quota* through last season's WSL rankings.

One of Toledo's toughest competitors, Griffin Colapinto , promises to be an even bigger challenge in the upcoming season as he continues to hit new career milestones. The USA surfer topped the rankings for the first time in May 2023 and finished second overall in the regular season.

This season Colapinto will be joined by younger brother Crosby who is making his debut on the Tour. The brothers have travelled together to some competitions in 2023, but competing on the same Tour might prove the extra boost both surfers need to excel in 2024.

Griffin Colapinto is eager to win his first world title, having come close last season, similarly to Australia’s Ethan Ewing and Jack Robinson , who are also going for their first.

Robinson enjoyed his best year in 2023, winning the season opener in Hawaii and later the Tahiti Pro, before welcoming his first child in late December. Ewing finished as the runner-up last season with four podium finishes on the regular season and a solid performance in the WSL Finals.

Always a trophy contender, Medina just missed the WSL Final last season and is still hungry for that fourth world title.

USA’s John John Florence is bidding for his third while the season's wildcard Slater wants to update the history books with a record-breaking 12th. As Slater underwent hip surgery in September, his form remains in question, though that would not make it any less exciting to watch the surfing legend in action.

Caroline Marks made the dazzling leap from wildcard to winner on the 2023 Championship Tour. From a shaky, ninth-place start to three victories in the second half of the season, including at Tahiti Pro, and upsetting Olympic champion Carissa Moore in the final head-to-head at Lower Trestles, Marks' world title campaign was a perfect example of grit. She now heads into 2024 with even more confidence.

Five-time world champion Carissa Moore announced earlier inJanuary that she will be stepping away from competitve surfing after the Paris Olympics.

Just days ahead of this season's first WSL event, eight-time world champion Stephanie Gilmore said that she will be taking a break from full-time competiton for a year.

“I am planning to take this time as a refresh for myself physically, mentally, and enjoy following swells and free surfing in new places,” said Gilmore in a WSL press release. “I have some projects and trips I want to do, which haven’t been possible while traveling during the season. I am still passionate and dedicated to competing, and I have goals and dreams that I am still chasing - I’m excited for this year to activate those and I look forward to returning in 2025.”

Her fellow Australian Sally Fitzgibbons will add more fire to the circuit, with plenty of young talent in the mix as well.

Last season’s rookie Caitlin Simmers emerged as the breakthrough of the season. The USA teen won two stops, advanced to the WSL Final 5 and finished fourth overall.

Australia's Molly Picklum is another youngster impressing on the big stage. A rookie in the 2022 season, she missed the mid-season cut-off that year, but made a powerful return in 2023, never finishing below the Top 5 and advancing to the WSL Finals, which also secured her a provisional Paris 2024 quota*.

*As National Olympic Committees have the exclusive authority for the representation of their respective countries at the Olympic Games, athletes' participation at the Paris 2024 Games depends on their NOC selecting them to represent their delegation at Paris 2024.

1976 – 1982

Hawaiian surfers Randy Rarick and Fred Hemmings organize a collection of disparate unaffiliated pro surfing events around the world into the first world championship tour by developing an international ranking system and encouraging the world's best surfers to get involved. Their organization, International Professional Surfers (IPS) becomes the original world governing body of professional surfing. Champions included Peter “PT” Townend (AUS), Shaun Tomson (ZAF), Wayne “Rabbit” Bartholomew (AUS), Mark “MR” Richards (AUS), Margo Oberg (USA), Lynn Boyer (HAW) and Debbie Beacham (USA).

1983 – 2014

Former World No. 2 surfer Ian "Kanga" Cairns evolves the original IPS concept into the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP), providing a joint ownership and control of the sport for both the event organizers and the surfers on tour. In the mid-1990s, the ASP's focus shifted to the "Dream Tour" concept, encouraging event organizers to transition their venues from well-populated, metropolitan areas to remote locations with high-quality surf. The Dream Tour birthed the company philosophy of, “world's best surfers, world's best waves,” which remains the organization's guiding principle to this day. Notable champions include Tom Carroll (AUS), Tom Curren (USA), Kelly Slater (USA), Andy Irons (HAW), Mick Fanning (AUS) and Gabriel Medina (BRA) as well as Wendy Botha (ZAF), Frieda Zamba (USA), Lisa Andersen (USA), Layne Beachley (AUS), Stephanie Gilmore (AUS) and Carissa Moore (HAW). In addition, this era opened its doors to both embrace the future and acknowledge the past in the creation of the junior and masters tours.

2015 – Present

The World Surf League (WSL) steps in to help evolve the ASP into a more potent centralized body, overseeing the key product areas of the elite men's and women's World Championship Tours, the Qualifying Series (QS), the Big Wave Tour, the Big Wave Awards, the World Longboard Championships and the World Junior Championships. In addition to its headquarters in Santa Monica, California, the WSL has a commercial office in New York City and regional offices in Japan, Australia, France, South Africa, Brazil, Hawaii and Southern California.

ESPN and the World Surf League Team Up for 2024 Championship Tour Season and U.S. Open of Surfing

Photo of Andrea DiCristoforo

ESPN has teamed up with the World Surf League (WSL), the global home of competitive surfing, in a new U.S. rights agreement for the 2024 Championship Tour season.

All ten WSL Championship Tour (CT) competitions and the U.S. Open of Surfing will be streamed live on ESPN+ for both men’s and women’s divisions, beginning with the Lexus Pipe Pro Presented by YETI at Banzai Pipeline from Oahu, Hawaii, scheduled from January 29 – February 10. In addition, episodes of WSL: Inside Pro Surfing , an all-access deep dive into the Championship Tour and its character-driven storylines, will appear on ESPN2 throughout the year.

“Working with ESPN this season is a fantastic opportunity to bring the sport to more viewers and new audiences across different platforms in the United States,” said Cherie Cohen, WSL Chief Revenue Officer. “They are the biggest name in sports content in the USA, and this agreement offers us the opportunity to share surfing with the millions of subscribers across their digital properties as well as on linear television.

ESPN vice president of programming and acquisitions, Tim Reed, added: “We are thrilled to showcase the 2024 WSL Championship Tour across ESPN platforms. Distributing the WSL CT live events rights on ESPN+ provides our audiences full access to the premier surf tour, where the top men and women will compete for the championship crown at legendary surf spots all over the world. The WSL CT is a great addition to the platform and live competitive surfing will fit well alongside an already significant content offering. We look forward to kicking off the season in Hawaii next week.”

How To Become A Pro Surfer – The Definitive Guide

how to go pro

Think professional surfing could be in your future, or are you trying to determine what it could mean as a parent?

You’re in the right spot; we will give you an honest snapshot of what it takes to become a professional surfer, including the good, the bad and the ugly.

Let’s dive straight in with one of pro surfing’s most sobering facts.

tour pro surf

You’ve Got To Start Early

All the surfers on the championship tour started surfing very young.

It may be harsh, but if you’re not surfing regularly by age 10, your chances of a professional career are minimal.

This isn’t so true if you want to become a big wave surfer.

Relying as much on bravery as it does on athletic skill, most advanced surfers can have a stab at successfully riding big waves.

But getting stuck in early is key if we’re talking about the high-performance acrobatics we see on the WSL.

Surf As Much As Possible

Part of becoming a pro relies on you spending as much time on a surfboard as humanely possible.

Yes, you need to mix in other forms of training, but there will never be a better way of improving your surfing than just surfing.

We’re talking onshore slop, massive storm surf, anything you can successfully paddle out in and even some stuff you can’t.

You never know what will happen during a comp, and developing your skills and all wave types will put you ahead of the game.

Surfing daily should be the goal, conditions provided, of course.

tour pro surf

Work With A Surf Photographer

You could be the best surfer in the world, but you’re just a local legend if you’re not getting clips or pics.

Your chances of getting Taylor Steele are fairly low, so family members and friends will have to do for now.

Chances are, if you’re surfing is doing the talking, you’ll get approached leaving the water at some point.

These guys and girls are your best friends.

Many make surf photography their passion, and if you’re a good subject, you can quickly get a dedicated photog on the beach covering your every wave.

tour pro surf

Find A Sponsor

Now you’ve got some good media circulating; your next task is to find a way into the surf industry.

This will come as sponsorship from one of the hundreds of different surf brands .

For groms, it normally starts with free clothing before moving on to boards, wetsuits, fins etc.

If you get enough exposure, you can work your way up to being paid to surf.

This is perfect for helping to enter comps and fund your training.

Travel To Surf

Your professional surfing career will take you worldwide, so surfing abroad is a must.

If you want to become a pro, you need to surf well in all types of waves, which means travelling.

We’re taking big waves, reeling point breaks , slabs and everything in between.

If your home waves are warm water, head to some cold water surfing destinations and get used to riding waves with a wetsuit.

tour pro surf

Enter Surf Competitions

Next up is putting yourself into a competitive scenario to see how you stack up against other surfers your age.

Free surfing differs greatly from the pressure you feel when you have to rip in a time window with other surfers and priority rules.

You need to get yourself accustomed to all of the rules of surfing competitions and the different tactics you can use to win heats.

This’ll also give you a great idea of where your skill level sits compared to your competitors, and who knows, you might net some prize money.

Surf With Other Professional Surfers

Surfing with other sponsored surfers is a great way of challenging yourself and pushing it to the next level.

Pros are naturally competitive, and you’ll do your best surfing with other rippers.

The same’s true for big wave surfing, where you need the comradery to take on massive waves.

tour pro surf

Look After Your Physical & Mental Health

Surfing every day, and travelling the world, takes a toll on your body and your mind.

You’ll need some real mental fortitude if you want to go pro, from missed flights, last-minute accommodation, and dealing with losses.

Consider time away from the ocean, even if it’s just for a few days; this can help reset your mind and rally your willpower.

Next, we move on to the physical rigours of surfing every day.

From repetitive strains to torn ligaments, surfing is no joke regarding injuries.

Head over to our guide on surfing and injuries for a sobering look at what can go wrong on a surfboard.

tour pro surf

Consider A Coach

A surf coach can help digest your surfing in and out of competition and recommend steps for improvement.

This can vary from advice on form and technique to heat tactics and time management.

Better yet, they’re a friendly, reliable face in your corner which can give you the confidence you need to progress through comps.

If you can’t get your hands on a coach locally, you can use an online coach like OMBE Surf .

Start Building Your Brand

In previous years surfing skills formed the primary deciding factor in whether a surfer was a good fit for a sponsor.

But in today’s world of social media and endless content, providing a marketable brand has never been so important.

By brand, I mean personal brand; how do your audience and the general surfing world perceive you? Hell, do they even know you?

Building great social profiles will be an awesome start here, with the possibility of some extra money on the side if things go well.

Try to start networking with anyone in the surf industry, be friendly and approachable and don’t be afraid to introduce yourself to new people.

tour pro surf

Understand It’s A Hard Road To Become A Professional Surfer

Now we’ve covered what you need to do; we need to talk about the harsh reality of trying to make a living out of surfing.

Thousands of surfers think they can make it to the world stage.

But in reality, there are less than 50 men and women that actually surf on the CT.

And some of them aren’t even rocking stickers on the nose of their surfboards.

The industry as a whole isn’t spending a lot of money, and it doesn’t look like changing anytime soon.

Don’t let me dissuade you, but understand that this is not an easy road in life despite appearing like a dream come true for the majority.

Now we’ve covered the nitty gritty, let’s jump into the Internet’s most pressing questions about going pro.

How much do aspiring pro surfers get paid?

As an aspiring pro, you might only get free gear, but if you’re lucky, you could get north of $1000 per month from the right sponsor.

How much can a pro surfer make?

This varies so much with global stars like Slater and Medina worth well into the millions, but some surfers on tour and completely self-funded, with William Cardoso and Ian Gentil being perfect examples.

Can you still go pro at 30 years old?

Realistically, no. By 30, you’re already on the way down in terms of physical fitness, and while Kelly Slater may still be surfing into his 50s, he started at a very young age.

The Snapper Challenger Series Event Was the Surf Contest the WSL Needed Badly

T he Bonsoy Gold Coast Pro. It was the event the World Surf League needed so badly, only it happened on the wrong tour. That wasn’t a bad thing though, with the Gold Coast Challenger Series event providing the kind of theatre, pressure and performances that only this tier and its format is capable of.

Held in pumping four-to-six foot hollow, rippable, roping, quintessentially east coast Australian point break conditions, the Gold Coast Pro was a fiesta of high-performance, high-octane, high-pressure surfing. A blink-and-you’ll-miss-it theatre of dreams and nightmares fought out between up and coming supernovas, aging journeyman and women, and recently relegated World Tour surfers, all desperate to make their mark. Surf contests don’t really get more entertaining.

It’s a well-stated goal of the World Surf League to see the Challenger Series occupy a similar footing to their marquee World Tour and this event went a long way to achieving that. It may also have them second-guessing their decision to upgrade Snapper from the Challenger Series to the World Tour next year.

One key take away from the event was that with four-person heats, surfers have the power to push pro surfing into a mainstream category of TV sports alongside football and basketball. When the waves are as consistent and good as they were at Snapper – as they should always be for events of this calibre given the locations and forecasting tools at the WSL’s disposal – the action of four-person heats is so relentless and so full of drama you’re glued to the screen if you have even a passing interest in the sport.

The four-man format also changed the brand of surfing on show; from the cautious, slow-paced chess match of the man-on-man format, to a frenetic shootout as four surfers scoured the lineup in search of any opportunity to put up a solid combo of maneuvres. Waiting for set waves is not a luxury you can afford in a four-person heat. A couple of decent insiders plied with explosive high-risk surfing will get you through most heats, and that’s what we saw.

When coupled with an up-and-coming generation whose very forte is just that – explosive, high-risk surfing – it made for one of the great events in recent memory.

On the men’s side we saw the arrival of Aussie freesurf phenom turned burgeoning comp demon, Dakoda Walters. We saw Brazilian Ian Gouveia blow minds with a punt pundits are still trying to name (inverted double-grab backside air reverse?). We saw the progressive point-break-honed frontside rail surfing of Aussie sensation, George Pittar, earn another semi-final finish. We saw a breakthrough performance from Barbadian, Josh Burke, on the back of getting immensely barelled behind the rock. We saw Sammy Pupo lay down tracks like we’ve seldom, maybe never, seen at this wave, on his way to falling just short of defending his Snapper C.S title. And we saw a breakthrough win from largely unknown Lennox Head lad, Mikey McDonagh, urged on by a deafening home crowd.

Born and bred on a world-class point just an hour south of Snapper, McDonagh and his timing, precision, and wave selection was a real feature throughout the event. Though his performance in the final was the one that will live large in his hometown’s memory. Up against the form surfer of the event in Sammy Pupo, he controlled the tempo of the heat masterfully, building a house with mid-range scores for vertical lip attacks and full-blooded meat hacks, getting the better of the opening exchanges. With conditions deteriorating and the margin widening, the parochial home crowd reached fever pitch before pandemonium set in when McDonagh dropped an 8.60 for a stranglehold on the final and the win.

None of it, however, was enough to outshine a single wave ridden byErin Brooks – a diminutive 16-year-old, Texas-born Canadian. Her perfect ten to open up her account in the semi final against Australian Isabella Nichols may be one of the greatest waves ever ridden by a woman in a contest jersey. I watched it from the beach, missing the take off only to look up as the crowd gasped and seeing the biggest, bluest barrel of Finals Day rifling off with seemingly no one in it. That’s how deep she was. After knifing the drop well behind a thundering section, she pulled a strong line through the low road of the tube, as it squared out, cannoned down the line, inhaled then exhaled and spat out a tiny spec of celestial matter. Maybe it was shock but I recalled a momentary hush falling over the crowd as surfing’s collective consciousness attempted to compute an impossible data entry. A surfer of that size, age, and dimensions should not be capable of that and we all needed a moment to make sense of this rare, quantum leap in performance surfing. One in which best backside barrel of the event, male or female, was had by a tiny 16-year-old woman. What a moment.

Brooks took out the final for good measure with that kind new-school dexterity, manifest in deep bottom turns, vertical backside hangers and fin-blows, that screams world titles. Already able to get into positions on her backhand that no one woman has ever gotten to before, her surfing was testament to what this Challenger Series tier and format of surfing is all about: excitement, spontaneity, youth, drama, risk, and, ultimately, great theatre. All in all a major step in the right direction for the World Surf League.

Her mind-melting brand of explosive unforeseen surfing and pure technique was testament to what this tier of surfing is all about, and a big step in the right direction for the World Surf League.

Samsung Celebrates Premiere of Paris 2024 Docu-Series With Street League Skateboarding and Pro Breaking Tour

In March 2024, Samsung announced partnerships with Street League Skateboarding (SLS), Pro Breaking Tour (PBT) and World Surf League (WSL) to celebrate the sports of skateboarding, breaking and surfing — and their communities — on the Road to Paris 2024 and beyond.

Samsung created a three-part docu-series to spotlight each sport’s iconic subculture as part of the company’s campaign for Paris 2024, “ Open always wins .” Produced in collaboration with SLS, PBT and WSL, the project encapsulates how the skateboarding, breaking and surfing communities all share the common value of openness.

To celebrate the project and connect with the communities who sit at the very heart of these sports, Samsung premiered the first two films at exclusive screenings — showcasing “Concrete Dreams” at the 2024 SLS Championship Tour in San Diego, U.S., and “Breaking Boundaries” at Pro Breaking Tour 2024 in Atlanta, U.S. “The Next Wave” will debut at the WSL’s SHISEIDO Tahiti Pro in late May.

Samsung joined thousands of skateboarding enthusiasts at the Viejas Arena in San Diego to watch hopefuls compete in the 2024 SLS Championship Tour. Fans gathered and eagerly observed the competition, where Team Samsung Galaxy’s very own Rayssa Leal secured first place in the Women’s Final.

In addition, fans and attendees took selfies with props at a skateboarding-themed “Open always wins” photo booth.

“The Galaxy S24’s photo and video capabilities are perfect for skateboarding and capturing the fast-paced action and tricks that are always happening,” shared one visitor.

“I love the features on the Galaxy S24 Ultra. The translation tool is useful,” added another guest. “Removing shadows out of pictures is amazing because everyone is using their phones to take pictures. The expanded storage is also great.”

“The documentary is awesome,” said an attendee. “It’s amazing that SLS and Samsung have come together to help out the culture and really spotlight it.”

Following the screening in San Diego, Samsung headed to the East Coast for Pro Breaking Tour 2024 at eHall Atlanta, where Samsung held a special screening of “Breaking Boundaries” for fans in between the preliminary and final rounds of the competition.

During the event, fans visited the Samsung booth where they had a chance to snap photos at a breaking-themed photo booth filled with fun props and enter a raffle to win prizes that included some of Samsung’s latest innovations.

Samsung also awarded an “Open Award” plaque and a Galaxy S24 Ultra to King Quic for his cyphering performance. In breaking, a cypher is when B-boys and B-girls form a circle and enter the middle one by one to show their freestyle dancing. Cyphers have been around ever since breaking began, and they’ve always been a place where breakers can express themselves.

“The documentary represents the most important pieces of breaking,” said one visitor. “It has roots in the street, but it represents the culmination of all the people who want to move and have technique and show who they are.”

“The film looks really good,” shared an attendee. “It’s cool to see the culture represented in a cinematic style. People need to know where to see the dance. It’s not just important — it’s powerful.”

“It is so awesome to see Samsung supporting the breaking community,” added another guest. “Between breaking’s debut at the Olympics and the partnership with Samsung, this is going to be a huge year for the growth and awareness of the sport.”

“Breaking can only keep growing, so it’s great to have partners like Samsung helping the growth and highlighting breaking’s culture and community through things like this documentary,” said a visitor.

“ Concrete Dreams ” and “ Breaking Boundaries ” can both be found on Samsung ’ s YouTube channel.

US campus protests updates: Police clear pro-Palestine UCLA camp

These were the updates on the US campus protests for Thursday, May 2.

Police make an arrest as they face-off with pro-Palestinian students after destroying part of the encampment barricade on the campus of the

This live page is now closed.

  • Police in the United States have arrested at least 132 student protesters and put them on buses after they forcibly cleared  a peaceful pro-Palestine encampment at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).
  • Protesters waved Palestinian flags and chanted slogans as advancing officers in riot gear fired flashbangs and removed barricades .
  • The dispersal of the camp comes after police ordered the hundreds of protesters to leave or face arrest, fewer than 24 hours after their encampment was attacked by violent pro-Israel counter-protesters.
  • President Joe Biden gave his first comments on the campus protests after the dispersal of the encampment, saying “dissent must never lead to disorder”, but making no mention of violent attacks on pro-Palestinian protesters.

Thanks for joining us

For more of our coverage, read about why the campus protests are striking a chord here .

And to find out more about the freedom of speech concerns surrounding recent crackdowns, turn here .

Here’s what happened today

This live page will be closing soon. Here’s a recap of the latest as protests continue at university campuses across the US:

  • US President Joe Biden has finally broken his silence on the nationwide protests, saying the US does not “squash dissent” but authorities will also enforce the rule of law.
  • Biden says the surge in campus unrest, which may spell trouble for him in November’s presidential election, will not affect his policy stance.
  • Hours earlier, police had cleared an encampment at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) that had come under attack by pro-Israeli counterprotesters a day earlier. At least 132 people were arrested, but more protesters have already started to gather.
  • Police crackdowns have also been reported at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire as well as at two public universities in upstate New York.

‘greater than an encampment’: why gaza student protests strike a chord.

Jillian Kestler-D'Amours

Reporting from Montreal, Canada

Like  those in the US , the encampment at Canada’s McGill University has struck a chord – both with the students and wider community members who support the protesters, and with the pro-Israel politicians and groups that have vehemently denounced them.

Some supporters say the encampments have stirred such strong reactions because they are highlighting stark inconsistencies: governments that say they promote human rights but  provide unwavering support  to Israel; universities that say they promote freedom of expression but send police to break up peaceful protests; right-wing politicians that denounce liberal “safe space” policies, but are now arguing that pro-Israel students feel unsafe.

The student protests have “exposed a lot of the contradictions in political discourse in the US and by extension, in Canada, too”, said Barry Eidlin, an associate professor of sociology at McGill.

“It hits so close to home for people and [there’s] this sort of hypocrisy between what our governments say they stand for in terms of democracy, human rights, freedom – and the kind of actions that they are supporting” in Gaza, he told Al Jazeera.

Trump weighs in on protests from hush money trial

Biden’s comments came shortly after Trump, who he is set to face off against the 2024 presidential election, again weighed in on the protests.

Speaking outside of his criminal trial, where he faces 34 felony charges related to payments made to an adult film star, Trump praised police in New York and California for cracking down on protesters.

“[The NYPD] did a job in Columbia and likewise in Los Angeles they did a really good job at UCLA,” he said.

He then renewed a familiar line.

“These are radical left lunatics. And they’ve got to be stopped,” he said.

Trump

Biden finally breaks his silence on campus protests

Kimberly Halkett

Reporting from Washington, DC

The US president, Joe Biden, has been under pressure, not just by his rival in the upcoming presidential election, former President Donald Trump, but also from the American public, who have been wondering why he’s been absent as these nationwide protests grow on college campuses.

There have been comments from the National Security Council spokesperson, the deputy press secretary, the press secretary, all saying pretty much what the president said: that these protests are not within the law, that the White House supports free speech, the right to protest and freedom of assembly, but that it doesn’t support protests that are unlawful.

One of the questions asked to President Biden was whether the demonstrations would make him change any of his policies on Gaza. The answer was no, without hesitation or qualification. And that’s what could have quelled this disruption. The fact that he was not willing to budge on that is going to be a problem for Biden, because he needs these young people to win re-election, and he trails Trump in a lot of battleground states.

The US president has a problem, and so far, he has not changed his tack.

Protests will not affect policy, National Guard should not be deployed: Biden

US President Joe Biden responded to two questions after completing the brief statement.

First, he was asked if the campus protests had affected his views on his administration’s policies.

“No,” he responded.

Second, he was asked if the US National Guard should be deployed to quell protests.

“No,” he said.

Biden says not a moment for ‘politics’ but for ‘clarity’

In his speech, Biden said it was not a “moment for politics”, but was instead a “moment for clarity”.

He went on to say that peaceful protests in the US is protected, but violent protest is not.

“Destroying property is not a peaceful protest, it’s against the law,” he said.

He added that protest should not veer into harassment, or prevent other students from receiving their education. “There should be no place in any campus place in America for antisemitism or threats of violence against Jewish students.”

Biden’s statements cut to questions at the heart of the protests. He has been among several elected officials who have portrayed the protests as broadly anti-Semitic.

Organisers have said critics have conflated criticism of Israel with anti-Semitism, using allegations of hate speech to stifle their voices. They also point to the large presence of Jewish people among the protesters.

Biden notably ignored one of the worst acts of violence to be committed at the student protests over the past two weeks: the attack by pro-Israeli protesters on the pro-Palestinian encampment at UCLA late on Tuesday.

Biden says US does not ‘squash dissent’

Addressing the protests, the president said they have been a test for free speech and the rule of law.

“We are not an authoritarian nation where we silence people or squash dissent. The American people are heard,” he said.

“But neither are we a lawless country,” he added.

More than 1,600 protesters arrested on US campuses over two weeks

Since April 18, when the latest round of campus protests began to surge, there have been arrests at 30 institutions of higher education in the US, according to an AP tally.

The most recent of those were at UCLA, where police cleared the protest encampment today. At Dartmouth College, 90 others were arrested overnight.

In New York, at least 29 protesters were also arrested overnight at Stony Brook University and 16 at the University at Buffalo, two campuses of the state university system.

Biden begins address on campus protests

Biden began address saying he would discuss “what’s going on our college campuses”.

We will bring you what he says shortly.

Media rights groups call on universities to respect student journalists

In a letter to college administrators, several prominent groups said that the “nation is currently turning to student journalists … for accurate and timely information”.

“We are horrified and dismayed to see student journalists and their advisers physically attacked, intimidated by police and unfairly restricted in their access to their own buildings,” said the groups, which included the Society for Professional Journalists, the College Media Association, and the Student Press Law Center.

“The maltreatment cannot continue,” they said.

Student journalists are journalists, full stop. And since covering protests at college campuses across the country, they have been and continue to be on the front lines. They deserve our protection, respect, and support! #StudentJournalismIsJournalism https://t.co/4GOVqglrJW — SPJ President (@AshantiBlaize) May 2, 2024

President Biden expected to speak on Gaza campus protests shortly

The unscheduled public statement comes after a nationwide police crackdown on pro-Palestinian student protesters.

Buses loaded with arrested protesters at UCLA

Reporting for Al Jazeera from UCLA, correspondent Phil Lavelle pointed out a large police bus behind him, which he said was loaded with protesters, many of whom still appear to be in good spirits.

“They’re still very defiant, some of them are talking, others are smiling,” Lavelle said. “We’ve actually heard singing within these buses – they are still singing ‘Free Palestine’.” He added that the California Highway Patrol had said 132 people had been arrested, but that the number could be higher.

Both the pro-Palestine encampment and a pro-Israeli counterprotest site now lay empty. What remains are tents, gas masks, a fire extinguisher, and wooden barricades, which the pro-Palestinian side used to defend themselves after being violently attacked by a pro-Israeli group late on Tuesday.

Pro-Palestine protesters have now gathered at UCLA next to the former encampment.

“They’ve been here for hours, they’re not really causing the police too much concern, they’re chanting, they’re singing,” Lavelle said.

“These protesters are very, very determined, they’ve camped out here for days. And it echoes what we’ve seen at other universities across the country. I’ve been to several of these over the last week, and what we saw at a few of them was that protesters are taken away, booked, and then they’re back. They might not be camping out again, because for them, this is something that will continue and continue.”

Former state dept official who resigned over Gaza cancels talk at Dartmouth

Josh Paul, the highest ranking Biden administration official to resign over its approach to the war in Gaza, has canceled a talk at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire after witnessing the police response to a protest on the campus.

“I arrived at my hotel to find an encampment in the green across the road, a peaceful group of students, faced off by a line of riot police,” he wrote on LinkedIn.

“As I have watched tonight, I have seen a police snatch squad break into the encampment and grab students and faculty one-by-one, and haul them off, as the riot police close the line behind them,” he said, adding he had been “reliably informed that ‘this is being done at the behest of the Dartmouth College administration.'”

He said he “gravely misjudged Dartmouth’s commitment to free and constructive dialogue”, adding he would cancel a planned panel discussion, but would continue with preplanned classroom discussions and private conversations.

Protesters in Paris say some students on hunger strike

An unknown number of student protesters from Paris’s Sciences Po university have decided to go on hunger strike in a bid to get their demands met by university administrators.

Sophie, a student protester at Sciences Po, reported the hunger strikes to Al Jazeera following a meeting between student protesters and university administrators in the French capital. Large protests were held at universities in Paris last week, including Sciences Po and the Sorbonne.

But Sophie said that none of the students’ demands had been met, including for their universities to cut ties with Israeli universities.

Are protesters’ freedom of speech and expression rights being protected?

Joseph Stepansky

Al Jazeera senior producer

The Constitution of the United States provides sweeping protections for freedom of speech and expression.

Public universities – like UCLA – must afford those rights to students. Most private universities also promise similar rights, and civil rights groups argue such standards should be guaranteed under academic freedom.

At the same time, universities must assure that students are able to access education. How administrators strike that balance can be telling, with many arguing that some universities have enforced policies – or even changed them – to unfairly target pro-Palestine protesters. The practice is known as “viewpoint discrimination”.

The American Civil Liberties Union has also warned about a bill passed in the US House of Representatives yesterday that would expand the definition of anti-Semitism in federal civil rights law. The group warned that the wider definition could be used to further stifle free speech on campuses, particularly when it comes to criticism of Israel.

Read more about the rights questions at the heart of the protests, here .

Encampments create space to connect through solidarity: Protester

Lauren Victoria Ruiz, a UCLA protester, reflected on the many people she has met amid the demonstration.

“Every culture, creed, gender, sexuality, religion, every single person is represented at these marches, at these meetings, at these encampments,” she told Al Jazeera.

“I’m Indigenous to the New Mexico area. As an Indigenous woman, I didn’t understand my own story, my own pain, until I met Palestinian women who had experienced the same thing,” she said. “I didn’t realise how similar our stories are.”

UCLA professor detained during police crackdown: Student newspaper

UCLA’s student newspaper, the Daily Bruin, has reported that at least one university professor was detained alongside students when police broke up the pro-Palestine encampment.

The paper cited another professor who was in the encampment as saying that students had also been “visibly injured” by law enforcement, who fired stun grenades and “violently dragged” some of them off of the site.

“Faculty are standing to bear witness to this unnecessary horror”, Graeme Blair, associate professor of political science, told the Daily Bruin via text message.

‘People will be back. This is not the end’

Live Al Jazeera footage shows dozens of detained protesters waiting in line to be processed chanting slogans, such as “Free Palestine”.

A detained protester told Al Jazeera this was not the end of the protest movement.

“People will be back. It’s not the end,” he said. “Until the genocide ends and the funding … The billions of dollars spent.”

The protester said his message to UCLA was that this was “very disappointing”.

UCLA protesters have nothing to lose now

Phil Lavelle

Reporting from UCLA, Los Angeles, US

Every now and then, we’ll see a traffic cone, a chunk of metal come flying over the fence, so we’ve already kind of got to keep our distance.

A few minutes ago, we saw a bit of action: A bunch of protesters in zip ties were held to one side so that the police could take them to be processed.

We know that there are about seven or eight police jail vans parked offsite.

These protesters are not going quiet, you can hear them shouting “Free Palestine”.

Protesters are going to be here for as long as they can. Every last man and woman here will be here until they are forcibly removed.

They’ve got nothing to lose now; they’re not going to walk out of here and not be arrested. Of course, they’ve dedicated days and days to this cause, and they believe in it as a wider cause.

They believe that the university should divest from any organisations that do business with Israel, that they should be transparent about its dealings with Israel and, of course, there’s the wider issue of the ceasefire.

Israeli president smears US protesters as anti-Semitic

Isaac Herzog has claimed US universities where pro-Palestine protests are taking place have been “contaminated by hatred and anti-Semitism”.

The Israeli president provided no evidence that such views are driving the protests, whose leaders, moved by the suffering of Palestinians in Gaza, say they are calling for a ceasefire in the war-battered territory and divestment from Israel.

Over the last week, police have arrested hundreds of peaceful protesters at the demonstrations, now spanning dozens of US universities, most recently at UCLA as we have been reporting.

US student protesters an ‘inspiration’ to other societies

Al Jazeera’s senior political analyst Marwan Bishara says the pro-Palestine protests sweeping across US campuses are an “inspiration”.

He said their actions are putting other societies, including Arab ones, to shame because of the capacity of the young protesters “to resist, to struggle internally, for justice in a land far away from them, on principle and to pay the price”.

He also said the protests have been met with a degree of cynicism by US President Joe Biden and Israeli Prime Minster Benjamin Netanyahu.

However, Bishara added, “when young people take a stand, it’s because they want to fight the fight that is worth fighting, not just the fight that they can win, and hence there is a lesson to be learned”.

He also noted that protesters at Brown University have already won the battle to force a vote on divestment from Israel.

Injuries reported at UCLA

Videographer Sean Beckner-Carmitchel, who is at UCLA, says that as the night progresses the number of demonstrators at UCLA has decreased.

“We are starting to see demonstrators in smaller numbers but we don’t see them stop,” he told Al Jazeera.

“Some look very tired, some look perhaps as though they feel they are resigned to fighting but that they don’t believe that they will overall win,” Beckner-Carmitchel said.

“I also a few people with injuries, things like large bruises. I saw one person who had to get their eyes washed away with water.”

  • Samsung Celebrates Premiere of Paris 2024 Docu-Series With Street League Skateboarding and Pro Breaking Tour

In March 2024 , Samsung announced partnerships with Street League Skateboarding (SLS), Pro Breaking Tour (PBT) and World Surf League (WSL) to celebrate the sports of skateboarding, breaking and surfing - and their communities - on the Road to Paris 2024 and beyond.

Samsung created a three-part docu-series to spotlight each sport's iconic subculture as part of the company's campaign for Paris 2024, 'Open always wins.' Produced in collaboration with SLS, PBT and WSL, the project encapsulates how the skateboarding, breaking and surfing communities all share the common value of openness.

To celebrate the project and connect with the communities who sit at the very heart of these sports, Samsung premiered the first two films at exclusive screenings - showcasing 'Concrete Dreams' at the 2024 SLS Championship Tour in San Diego , U.S. , and 'Breaking Boundaries' at Pro Breaking Tour 2024 in Atlanta , U.S. 'The Next Wave' will debut at the WSL's SHISEIDO Tahiti Pro in late May.

Rayssa Leal secured first place in the Women's Final.

In addition, fans and attendees took selfies with props at a skateboarding-themed 'Open always wins' photo booth.

'The Galaxy S24's photo and video capabilities are perfect for skateboarding and capturing the fast-paced action and tricks that are always happening,' shared one visitor.

'I love the features on the Galaxy S24 Ultra. The translation tool is useful,' added another guest. 'Removing shadows out of pictures is amazing because everyone is using their phones to take pictures. The expanded storage is also great.'

'The documentary is awesome,' said an attendee. 'It's amazing that SLS and Samsung have come together to help out the culture and really spotlight it.'

? 'Concrete Dreams' is screened during the final competition at the 2024 SLS Championship Tour in San Diego .

Following the screening in San Diego , Samsung headed to the East Coast for Pro Breaking Tour 2024 at eHall Atlanta , where Samsung held a special screening of 'Breaking Boundaries' for fans in between the preliminary and final rounds of the competition.

During the event, fans visited the Samsung booth where they had a chance to snap photos at a breaking-themed photo booth filled with fun props and enter a raffle to win prizes that included some of Samsung 's latest innovations.

King Quic for his cyphering performance. In breaking, a cypher is when B-boys and B-girls form a circle and enter the middle one by one to show their freestyle dancing. Cyphers have been around ever since breaking began, and they've always been a place where breakers can express themselves.

'The documentary represents the most important pieces of breaking,' said one visitor. 'It has roots in the street, but it represents the culmination of all the people who want to move and have technique and show who they are.'

'The film looks really good,' shared an attendee. 'It's cool to see the culture represented in a cinematic style. People need to know where to see the dance. It's not just important - it's powerful.'

'It is so awesome to see Samsung supporting the breaking community,' added another guest. 'Between breaking's debut at the Olympics and the partnership with Samsung , this is going to be a huge year for the growth and awareness of the sport.'

'Breaking can only keep growing, so it's great to have partners like Samsung helping the growth and highlighting breaking's culture and community through things like this documentary,' said a visitor.

'Concrete Dreams' and 'Breaking Boundaries' can both be found on Samsung 's YouTube channel.

3 bodies in Mexican well identified as Australian and American surfers killed for truck’s tires

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Relatives have identified three bodies found in a well as those of two Australian surfers and one American who went missing last weekend, Mexican authorities said Sunday.

Baja California state prosecutors said the relatives had viewed the corpses recovered from a remote well about 50 feet (15 meters) deep and recognized them as their loved ones.

Thieves apparently killed the three, who were on a surfing trip to Mexico’s Baja peninsula, to steal their truck because they wanted the tires. They then allegedly got rid of the bodies by dumping them in a well near the coast.

The well was located some 4 miles (6 kilometers) from where the foreigners were killed, and also contained a fourth cadaver that had been there much longer.

Three suspects are being held in connection with the case, which locals said was solved far more quickly than the disappearances of thousands of Mexicans.

The three men were on a camping and surfing trip along a stretch of coast south of the city of Ensenada, posting idyllic photos on social media of waves and isolated beaches, before they went missing last weekend.

Chief state prosecutor María Elena Andrade Ramírez described what likely would have been moments of terror that ended the trip for brothers Jake and Callum Robinson from Australia and American Jack Carter Rhoad.

She theorized the killers drove by and saw the foreigners’ pickup truck and tents and wanted to steal their tires. But “when (the foreigners) came up and caught them, surely, they resisted.”

She said that’s when the killers would have shot the tourists.

The thieves then allegedly went to what she called “a site that is extremely hard to get to” and allegedly dumped the bodies into a well they apparently were familiar with. She said investigators were not ruling out the possibility the same suspects also dumped the first, earlier body in the well as part of previous crimes.

“They may have been looking for trucks in this area,” Andrade Ramírez said.

The thieves allegedly covered the well with boards. “It was literally almost impossible to find it,” Andrade Ramírez said, and it took two hours to winch the bodies out of the well.

Australian Treasurer Jim Chalmers expressed sympathy for the Robinson family. “I think the whole country’s heart goes out to all of their loved ones. It has been an absolutely horrendous, absolutely horrific ordeal and our thoughts are with all of them today,” he said at a news conference Monday in the capital, Canberra.

The site where the bodies were discovered near the township of Santo Tomás was near the remote seaside area where the missing men’s tents and truck were found Thursday along the coast. From their last photo posts, the trip looked perfect. But even experienced local expatriates are questioning whether it is safe to camp along the largely deserted coast anymore.

The moderator of the local Talk Baja internet forum, who has lived in the area for almost two decades, wrote in an editorial Saturday that “the reality is, the dangers of traveling to and camping in remote areas are outweighing the benefits anymore.”

But in a way, adventure was key to the victims’ lifestyle.

Callum Robinson’s Instagram account contained the following slogan: “If you’re not living on the edge, you’re taking up too much room.”

At the news conference, Andrade Ramírez was questioned by one reporter who expressed approval that such a massive and rapid search was mounted for the foreigners, but asked why, when local people disappear in the area, little is often done for weeks, months, or years.

“Do you have to be a foreigner in Baja California in order for there to be an investigation if something happens to you?’ asked the reporter, who did not identify herself by name. “Every investigation is different,” Andrade Ramírez replied.

As if to underscore that point, dozens of mourners, surfers and demonstrators gathered in a main plaza in Ensenada, the nearest city, to voice their anger and sadness at the deaths.

“Ensenada is a mass grave,” read one placard carried by protesters. “Australia, we are with you,” one man scrawled on one of the half-dozen surf boards at the demonstration.

A woman held up a sign that read “They only wanted to surf — we demand safe beaches.”

Gabriela Acosta, a surfer, attended the protest “to show love, solidarity and respect for the three lives that were lost.” Acosta said that surfers in Baja are aware of the dangers.

“We are women and we would sometimes like to surf alone,” Acosta said. “But we never do that, because of the situation. We always have to go accompanied.”

“I think that what happened to them is just an example of the lack of safety in this state,” she said.

Surfers later performed a “paddle-out” ceremony where they formed a circle on their boards in the ocean.

Baja California prosecutors had said they were questioning three people in the killings, two of them because they were caught with methamphetamines. Prosecutors said the two were being held pending drug charges but continue to be suspects in the killings.

A third man was arrested on charges of a crime equivalent to kidnapping, but that was before the bodies were found. It was unclear if he might face more charges.

The third suspect was believed to have directly participated in the killings. In keeping with Mexican law, prosecutors identified him by his first name, Jesús Gerardo, alias “el Kekas,” a slang word that means “quesadillas,” or cheese tortillas. Andrade Ramírez said he had a criminal record, and that more people may have been involved.

Last week, the mother of the missing Australians, Debra Robinson, posted on a local community Facebook page, appealing for help in finding her sons. Robinson said Callum and Jake had not been heard from since April 27. They had booked accommodation in the city of Rosarito, not far from Ensenada.

Robinson said Callum was diabetic. She also mentioned that the American who was with them was named Jack Carter Rhoad, but the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City did not immediately confirm that. The U.S. State Department said it was aware of reports of a U.S. citizen missing in Baja, but gave no further details.

In 2015, two Australian surfers, Adam Coleman and Dean Lucas, were killed in western Sinaloa state, across the Gulf of California — also known as the Sea of Cortez — from the Baja peninsula. Authorities said they were victims of highway bandits. Three suspects were arrested in that case.
