UAE visit visa: Essential travel documents for a hassle-free entry

Coming to the UAE for a summer break? Three things to ensure before you land

DUBAI AIRPORT RAIN

Dubai: Planning to visit the UAE for a quick summer break? If you are travelling to the country on a tourist or visit visa, what are the documents you need to carry, apart from your passport?

Gulf News spoke with travel and tourism experts in the UAE to clarify all the arrangements you need to have in place before you land.

Get exclusive content with Gulf News WhatsApp channel

1. secure your return flight ticket.

Husham Kattingeri, an outbound travel supervisor at Regal Tours Worldwide, spoke about how tourists should always have a return ticket in place, regardless of which country they are visiting.

“The first thing that is compulsory for anybody, not just in the UAE but anywhere in the world, is that you must show a return ticket, either to your home country or even if it is to another country, as long as you have a valid visa for that country. That means that a ticket out of UAE must be there, you cannot have a one-way ticket,” Kattingeri said.

2. Consider carrying cash

Kattingeri said that regardless of which country you travel to, it is advisable to carry sufficient amount cash, to cover for your expenses when travelling.

“It is better to have some amount of money with you, which you will need anyway during your trip. It helps,” he said.

3. Hotel booking confirmation (optional, but beneficial)

Nizar Pulappadi, manager at Season Travel and Tourism, added that while in most cases you may not be asked for any such details, it is important to know exactly where you are going to stay.

If you have a relative or friend, all you need to do is carry their passport copy and visa page, as supporting documents, in case you are asked about where you are going to stay. - Nizar Pulappadi, manager at Season Travel and Tourism

“If a person is a visit visa holder, and they don’t have any relatives or friends in the UAE, it is important to have a hotel booking. But if you do have a relative or friend, all you need to do is carry their passport copy and visa page, as supporting documents, in case you are asked about where you are going to stay. It is also important to communicate clearly, so if you are asked by an officer where you are going to stay, provide a clear address or the area in which your friend or relative stays,” Pulappadi said.

Travellers on Dubai visit visas are urged to carry Dh3,000 cash, a valid return ticket, and proof of accommodation before going on a flight to the emirate, tourism agencies told Khaleej Times.

Experts said authorities are ensuring strict entry guidelines are followed. Some passengers who failed to meet the requirements said they were stopped at Indian airports and barred from boarding their flights. Other reported being stranded at airports in Dubai.

“People travelling to Dubai must have a valid visa with a passport having validity of at least six months. One must carry a confirmed return ticket. These are checks that are being done earlier,” said Firoz Maliyakkal, founder and CEO of Tahira Tours and Travels.

“However, now, checks are being done to ensure that you are carrying enough money as proof of funds to sustain your stay in Dubai. The amount is any currency equivalent to Dh3,000 in cash or credit card. One has to provide a valid address proof of accommodation in the UAE; it can be either a relative's or friend’s home or a hotel booking,” added Firoz.

Travel agents said this rule has been in place for a long time but now, authorities have tightened monitoring for the benefit of travellers.

“Airport checks are being conducted to safeguard travellers arriving in Dubai. There have been many cases of overstaying. This step by the authorities will positively impact the tourism sector of the emirate,” said Libin Varghese from Rooh Travel and Tourism.

“Stringent checks provide transparency and prevent any discrepancies for people travelling to the UAE," he added.

'Stuck at airport'

On May 15, Abin S arrived in Dubai on a Spice Jet flight from Cochin International Airport in the south Indian state of Kerala. Upon his arrival, he was asked to provide the requirements to enter Dubai.

“Upon my arrival at 2.30am, I was asked to show an amount equivalent to Dh3,000, which I had with me. I also had a return ticket. But the crucial part was proof of my accommodation in Dubai,” said Abin.

“I mentioned that I would be staying with my cousin, and the officers requested his Emirates ID and proof of accommodation. However, my cousin is renting a room in Dubai and doesn't have accommodation under his name,” added Abin.

This was not Abin's first trip to Dubai, he said, and he had not encountered such a situation before.

“I wasn't informed about this by the travel agent in India, nor did my cousin tell me anything. I had to stay in the airport's waiting hall for four days, and finally, on May 19, I returned to my hometown on the same airline,” Abin said.

Khaleej Times has reached out to immigration authorities for comment, and a response is awaited.

Denied boarding

When Indian tourist Abhishek arrived at Cochin International Airport to board his flight to Dubai on May 20, he was not allowed to enter the airport. He was hoping to visit his brother-in-law Bijesh in Dubai.

“The airport staff said that the UAE will not allow anyone to enter the country without showing a valid hotel stay for the duration of their visit visa in the country or Dh5000 in cash as dirhams,” said Bijesh. “He had Rs50,000 but they said he had to present the cash in dirhams.”

Bijesh said he and his friends scrambled to make alternative arrangements. “Abhishek was supposed to stay with his uncle in Dubai,” he said.

“We immediately sent all the details of the uncle, including his Emirates ID and proof of stay, but the authorities at Cochin airport were adamant that they would not let him board the plane until he presented the necessary documents,” said Bijesh.

Unable to board his scheduled Spice Jet flight, Abhishek lost the money he had spent on it. “We went to the Spice Jet office in Dubai and asked them for a refund,” said Bijesh. “However, they said there was nothing they could do as the rules were being enforced very strictly and it was the duty of the passenger to check it,” added Bijesh.

Now, Abhishek is waiting to arrange funds and book new tickets to be able to fly to Dubai.

UAE's visiting visa rules: What has changed, what should travellers keep with them

 alt=

Dubai: The latest guidelines regarding the UAE visiting visa have become a matter of concern for many who were planning a trip to the country. Affi Ahammad, MD of Smart Travels said that the passengers should keep all the documents ready at hand to be produced at the airport, to ensure hassle-free travel. The guidelines state that the passengers arriving in the country on a visiting visa should carry: 1) A valid return ticket 2) Address of friends or relatives with whom they plan to stay. It's better if they travel from India with the relative with whom they are going to stay 3) Passport with a validity of six months 4) Copy of their Emirates ID 5) 5000 dirhams in account or equivalent amount as currency

Meanwhile, the guideline that one should carry a bank statement for the last six months isn’t strict. Also, if not 5000 dirhams, they should have at least 3000 dirhams with them or possess a credit card with the stipulated limit. Rules relaxed in 2020, but... The above rules existed earlier too, but they were relaxed in September 2020. The directives were repealed when the travel agencies expressed concern that it would disappoint job aspirants who wish to come to the UAE and that it would adversely affect the businesses. However, now, many are troubled that the government has made it stricter again. Many passengers, including Malayalis, who failed to fulfil these guidelines or produce necessary travel documents were detained at the Indian airports and were not allowed to board the planes.

Some others who managed to land in Dubai were reportedly detained by the immigration authorities there. The government’s move to make the visit visa guidelines stricter has quashed the dreams of many youngsters who were eager to find a good job in the UAE. People who belong to families that aren’t financially sound have struggled to arrange the money for purchasing visas and air tickets. Now, they can't arrange Rs 68,000 more so that they could adhere to the directives. In the beginning, the passengers were reportedly detained at the Dubai airport. However, now, checking has been made stricter at the Indian airports too. It was reported that a few passengers who hail from the Idukki district in Kerala were detained like this and sent back to India. But, the Dubai immigration authorities haven’t issued any official statement regarding this.

No new vacancies, boost for tourism The number of job seekers who arrive on visiting visas has gone up significantly, especially after the COVID-19 outbreak. Since the vacant posts were filled as soon as the pandemic subsided and the financial sector was recovering slowing, new vacancies weren’t created. Currently, hundreds of job aspirants are in UAE, trying hard to land a job. Among them, most Keralites are highly educated and experienced too. Inspections are conducted regularly at the airports in Dubai to ensure the safety of the passengers. Lots of cases have been reported for overstaying. Experts in the travel and tourism industry observe that the latest actions by the authorities would only boost the tourism sector in the Emirates. They say that strict inspection would make the immigration procedures transparent and would save the passengers from difficulties caused by miscommunication.

Most didn't have address proof The passengers who were detained at the airport in Dubai were the first batch of flyers who faced a crisis as they couldn’t produce proper travel documents. Even though most people could prove that they had the stipulated amount at hand, they failed to provide the address proof of relatives or other accommodation details. When some of them said that they were residing with their relatives, the officials inquired about their address and Emirates ID. But, the passengers had to return as they couldn’t produce these details. Meanwhile, some others had to wait at the airport for hours before returning. These people had to suffer such hardships at the airport as they weren’t informed about the guidelines by the travel agents. However, the travel agents say that they too had no idea as these weren’t stricter earlier.

D ubai has instituted some changes in its visit visa rules, urging travellers to carry Dh3,000 cash, a valid return ticket, and proof of accommodation boarding a flight, Khaleej Times reported on Thursday citing travel agencies. Several Indian tourists who failed to comply with these guidelines were either denied boarding or found themselves 'stuck' at the airport.

According to the Khaleej Times report, authorities are ensuring these strict entry guidelines are followed. Firoz Maliyakkal, founder and CEO of Tahira Tours and Travels, told the media outlet: “People travelling to Dubai must have a valid visa with a passport having validity of at least six months. Maliyakkal further added that authorities are ensuring a traveller has enough money as 'proof of funds to sustain your stay in Dubai'.

“The amount is any currency equivalent to Dh3,000 in cash or credit card. One has to provide a valid address proof of accommodation in the UAE; it can be either a relative's or friend’s home or a hotel booking,” he told Khaleej Times.

Another travel agent said that this step will positively impact the tourism sector of the emirate and ensure people don't overstay.

Khaleej Times also quoted travellers saying they were not allowed to board or were stranded at the Dubai airport. Local media outlets further stated that airlines are making sure that visiting visa holders must have hotel reservation paperwork. Passengers whose flights were cancelled were not allowed to reschedule.

UAE Visit Visa Alert: New Rules and Airport Checks Every Indian Traveler Must Know

UAE Visa

Planning a trip to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on a tourist visa? Be prepared for enhanced scrutiny at airports as the UAE immigration department steps up measures to prevent misuse of visit visas by job seekers. Here’s what Indian travelers need to know about the new regulations and how to ensure a smooth entry into the UAE.

Table of Contents

Heightened Checks for Job Seekers

Recently, numerous passengers from Kerala were detained at Kochi and Kozhikode airports for not having the required travel documents. This move follows a noticeable trend where travelers enter the UAE on visit visas for job hunting. To combat this, airlines now must verify that passengers have:

  • Hotel Bookings : Proof of confirmed accommodation for the entire stay.
  • Financial Resources : Evidence of funds to support their visit. This includes having at least 3,000 dirhams (about US$817) for a one-month stay and 5,000 dirhams (about US$1,362) for longer visits. Credit cards meeting these limits are also accepted.

5 Nights 6 Days Dubai Itinerary

New Regulations for Tourists Visiting Dubai

To align with the new guidelines, travelers should be well-prepared with the following:

Purpose and Accommodation Verification

Immigration officials will ask visitors about the reason for their visit, where they will stay, and how they plan to cover their expenses. Inadequate or unclear responses may lead to denial of entry.

Strict Prohibition on Employment

Working while on a tourist visa in the UAE is illegal. Agencies offering jobs to tourists or visiting visa holders will face severe legal consequences. This regulation ensures tourists remain within the bounds of their visa conditions.

Employment Visas Only for Workers

For those entering on an employment visa, it is essential to complete all entry permit procedures before starting work. This ensures all workers are legally authorized to be in the UAE.

Evidence of Tourist Activities

Tourists must show detailed proof of their travel plans, including hotel reservations, return tickets, and sufficient funds to support their stay. This confirms the visit is purely for tourism purposes.

Visiting Friends or Relatives

If visiting family or friends, tourists must provide copies of their host’s visa and passport, along with the host’s address, phone number, and accommodation details. This helps verify the legitimacy of the visit.

8 Days Dubai & Abu Dhabi Tour Package

Essential Documentation

To avoid any travel disruptions, ensure you have the following:

  • Return flight ticket
  • Hotel booking confirmation
  • Proof of sufficient funds
  • Contact details for any relatives or friends you plan to visit

Ensuring a Smooth Entry into the UAE

Familiarize yourself with these regulations to ensure hassle-free entry into the UAE. Here’s a detailed guide on preparing for your visit:

1. Confirm Accommodation Arrangements

Before traveling, secure your hotel booking and keep the confirmation accessible. Immigration officers will need to see proof of your stay arrangements.

2. Verify Financial Means

Ensure you have enough funds to cover your expenses. This can be in cash, traveler’s cheques, or a credit card with a sufficient limit. A minimum of 3,000 dirhams for a one-month stay and 5,000 dirhams for longer visits is required.

3. Prepare for Immigration Queries

Be ready to answer questions about your visit’s purpose, accommodation, and financial means. Clear and concise answers will facilitate a smoother entry process.

4. Avoid Employment Offers

Refrain from accepting job offers while on a tourist visa, as it is illegal. Do not trust agencies that claim they can arrange employment for you on a tourist visa.

5. Complete Employment Visa Requirements

If you intend to work in the UAE, ensure all employment visa documentation is complete before your trip. Entering on a tourist visa with the intent to switch to an employment visa can cause complications.

6. Focus on Tourist Activities

Enjoy your visit by exploring the UAE’s attractions. Ensure you have all the necessary documents like your return ticket and hotel booking confirmation to support your tourist activities.

7. Visiting Family or Friends

If visiting relatives or friends, ensure you have their visa copies, passport details, and contact information. This will help confirm the legitimacy of your visit.

8. Keep Documents Ready

Having all your documents organized will help expedite the entry process. This includes your return flight ticket, proof of accommodation, and financial resources.

By adhering to these guidelines and having all the necessary documentation, you can confidently plan your UAE visit. Staying informed about these new regulations will help you avoid any potential issues and ensure a hassle-free travel experience.
