Downtown Cancun is most of the time ignored and for a reason. I always say that is very ugly, nothing like the charming colonial town that you may find in Yucatan or other parts of Mexico, and yet, you should visit and in this post, I will tell you why!

However there are interesting places to visit, local restaurants and interesting things to do that may surprise you.

Downtown Cancun is where I have lived since 2010 and I keep coming back to, and in this post I will tell you all about it.

Downtown Cancun at a Glance

Cancun was created relatively late and with the main focus to attract tourism in the Hotel Zone. Downtown Cancun was built with no sense of beauty, at all, but just to offer a place to live for the people who were working in the Hotel Zone hotels and restaurants.

It has been constantly growing since then and it’s now an interesting place to visit. The government is also trying to make it more appealing for tourists to shift their attention from the popular Hotel Zøne to the less attractive downtown area.

If you want to see how locals live, try authentic (and cheap) food, and stroll around a Mexican city, you should plan a visit to downtown Cancun. It is cheap, and easy, to get from the hotel zone to downtown Cancun.

The R1 and R2 buses run constantly from the Hotel Zone to Cancun city center, and you can hop on one and take it to the city center.

Ready to get out of the hotel zone and explore downtown Cancun? Keep reading to learn the best things to do in downtown Cancun .

Downtown Cancun is 12 kilometers from the Cancun airport . The Cancun Hotel Zone is a long, thin peninsula that is in the shape of the number 7.

Downtown Cancun is right at the top tip of the 7, located just slightly off the waterfront. Depending on where you are staying in the hotel zone, it can take between 15-25 minutes to get downtown.

Things to do in Downtown Cancun

Before the 1970s Cancun was a small village with about 100 fishermen living there. As the hotel zone grew, so did Cancun downtown. People from all over Mexico moved there to get jobs in the newly arriving tourism.

Now, downtown Cancun is home to over 850,000 people, and the downtown is full of culture, food and drinks, and activities. If you want to check out downtown Cancun, here is what you do not want to miss.

1. Explore Downtown Cancun Street Arts

Spend some time exploring Cancun on foot. While you are walking around make sure to look up at the buildings- you will find some amazing murals. Cancun’s walls are home to murals from a variety of local and international artists. You will find murals that feature wildlife, Mayan and Mexican culture, as well as abstract and graffiti murals.

The avenue also has several hotels and supermarkets. If you want to just wander around and see what kind of treasures you can find, this is a great area to visit.

Located just a few blocks from Plaza Las Americas , Malecon Tajamar is a lovely walkway along the Nichupte Lagoon.

It is a great spot to go for a stroll and enjoy views of the Cancun hotel zone.

There are plenty of shady areas, with tall palm trees, and you will find lots of locals taking advantage of this outdoor area. You will often see people exercising, going for a run, and walking their dogs here.

4. Immerse with the locals at Parque de las Palapas

Parque las Palapas is located just a few blocks off of Avenida Tulum in the heart of downtown Cancun.

Parque las Palapas has long been one of the main parks in Cancun, and one of the oldest churches in the city is located on the edge of the park.

There are food stalls around the park with lots of delicious treats to try. If you want something sweet you can get an ice cream or have a made-to-order marquesita . You can find local artisans selling handicrafts here.

This park is a favorite for families. There is a jungle gym and people rent small, motorized cars for children to drive. The park has a large stage and there are often music and cultural events in the park.

5. Go souvenir shopping at Mercado 28

Look for treasures in this huge market filled with shops and stalls. You can find all sorts of souvenirs and Mexican handicrafts here including textiles, handmade clothes, pottery, and artisanal products.

You will not find any prices on items, so be prepared to haggle a little bit with the vendors.

Many shops sell similar items, so you can walk around and get an idea of the going price of an item you are interested in.

This busy market also has food stalls and small restaurants where you can find some truly authentic food for great prices.

You will find Mercado 23 at the intersection of Avenida Tulum and Avenida Chichen Itza. Here you can get a real view of where locals shop for food. This market is not very touristy, although you can find some souvenir shops around the outside.

8. Work out at Urbano Kabah Park

The Urbano Kabah Park is made up of 41 hectares of incredibly maintained natural areas, right in the middle of downtown Cancun.

The park opened in 1995 to preserve the delicate flora and fauna of the area and has become a favorite place for people to escape the city and connect with nature.

This park is a great place to get some exercise- there are nature trails to walk or run, a sports circuit, and an area with exercise equipment.

There is also a play area for kids, as well as a small museum. You can explore the park on your own, and there are organized educational activities for children and adults on the weekends. It is open daily and free!

You may also meet a family of Coatì, some of the most popular animals that you can find in Cancun . They will come to you to look for food and will eat anything.

I don’t usually support giving food to wildlife but I believe it’s now become part of their routine.

9. Take a self-guided walking tour

The history of Cancun goes all the way back to the Mayan Empire. Coconut plantations covered much of the area that is now Cancun before it turned into a major tourist destination and the city population exploded.

Learn about the history, and enjoy the sites by taking a self-guided walking tour. Download the GPSMyCity app to your phone here to take a tour at your own pace.

This app becomes your personal tour guide and uses GPS navigation to guide you around downtown. One of the best parts- the app works offline, so it won’t eat up all your data!

11. Cancun food tour and Local Market

I personally took this tour and I had so much fun discovering local places where I have never been myself despite living here. We had so much food I couldn’t eat for the rest of the day.

The guide was very knowledgeable and shared some interesting information on locals’ favorite places to eat, food names, and eating habits. I cannot recommend it enough.

Besides eating we also went for a quick walk through the Mercado 23 and we stop by the spectacular giant murals, a project commissioned by the Cancun Municipality to embellish old tired buildings and they did indeed a great job!

Is downtown Cancun worth visiting?

Yes! If you want to see the other side of Cancun away from the beaches, it is worth visiting. You can learn about the history and culture of the area there. Plus, downtown Cancun has lots of great shopping, galleries, restaurants, and bars to visit.

Is downtown Cancun safe?

Yes, it is relatively safe for you to visit downtown Cancun . In the last few years, you may have seen reports of unpleasant episodes in downtown Cancun. Unfortunately, there is violence between rival gangs; however, you can still safely visit the city, as this should not impact you at all.

Just like when you visit a big city anywhere in the world you should pay attention to your surroundings, and make sure to not walk around under the influence.

Tips for Visiting Downtown Cancun

✔️ get to cancun downtown by local busses.

It is easy to get to downtown Cancun from the hotel zone . You can hop on the R1 or R2 buses. The cost is 11 pesos.

These buses run continuously throughout the day and will take you to the center of Cancun. From there you can stroll around, find some cheap, and delicious tacos, and soak up the city atmosphere.

 ✔️ Eat in local eateries

Want to find the best food? Ask locals, or just look at what places seem to be the busiest. If you come across a taco cart or food stand with long lines of locals, chances are they are serving up something delicious! Join a food tour to find the best places to eat.

 ✔️ Be open

Do not be afraid to try something new. You will find more authentic and regional food in downtown Cancun than your hotel serves.

✔️ Take cash with you (preferably Mexican Pesos)

It is a good idea to take cash with you, since smaller stands and stores may not accept credit cards. If you have small denomination bills, try to take those with you, since it seems like no one ever has enough change.

 ✔️ Dress appropriately

While it is impossible to “blend in like a local” when you are, in fact, a tourist, you can still try to dress like one.

In downtown Cancun, you will find people dressed for work, with many people wearing pants, and nice shirts. It is rare to see locals walking around in beachwear.

You want to be comfortable and not overheat, but just know, you will stand out like a tourist if you wear your swimsuit and cover up all over downtown. You can still dress casually though, shorts and a shirt are just fine.

Puerto Cancun Cao Restaurant

Useful shops and facilities in Cancun Downtown

Coworking places.

There are a few coworking spaces in Cancun although I don’t think it’s ready to welcome digital nomads, yet. I love to work from the Mercado Negro Plaza because there are a few restaurants with great starting areas and good WIFI.

Organic products

If you are looking for organic and/or vegan products look no further than Sirena Morena in the Avenida Nader.

They have a lot of choice both for home and personal care and food, including vegan options. They also have a great restaurant in the backyard for breakfast lunch or snack.

Best Supermarkets

I usually shop at Walmart on the Avenida Bonampak or the one below Ibis Hotel. These were previously called Sperama but they are now rebranded as Walmart express, because they are smaller than the usual store. If you want a bigger supermarket you can get to the Walmart in downtown .

Other choices are Soriana and Chedraui, but are not my favorite for some reasons.

Cosco, Sams and cityclub are also available in Cancun.

You can take your mac or iPhone for cleaning or repair to iGeek .

Best Hairdresser

I love to go to Domenico DeMeo, an Italian hairdresser who’s been in Cancun forever. He has now created his own beauty shop with different stylist to help him. He still does the cuts. He’s awesome! Costs are a bit above the average but worth the money.

Best Immigration lawyer

My immigration lawyer is the best, Durvin Alcocer . She’s an expert in helping foreigners who want to come and live in Cancun , like I did. So if this is your goal, you should contact her. Her rates are fair and she’s always on to of her game.

I always go to Dharma Spa , in Gallerya Infinity. They have been there for ever and so the staff. They can do anything from massages to mani, pedi and waxing. There is also a beautiful clothing and accessory store on the top floor.

Bus Station

The ADO bus station is the place to go if you want to get to anywhere on public coach busses from Cancun. However right in front of the ADO entrance you can find the Playa Express Colectivos, small van that take you to Playa del Carmen.

On the opposite side of the road you can also find other collective mini van that take you to Playa del Carmen . And a more random one that take you to Chiquila’ to get to Holbox.

The small vans leave continuously as soon as they are full, which happens very fast. Those drivers drive quite recklessly though, so prepare yourself for a roller coaster drive. Also they stop anywhere along the road, so it’s the best option if you want to stop anywhere that is not a bus station.

The ADO bus only stop in the designated bus stops that you can find in the itinerary.

Places for Jogging

When I lived and worked in Cancun I used to go jogging often. The best places to enjoy a good run are, either Malecon Tajamar (if you don’t run long distances) or Parque Kaba’.

However, if you love the longer runs you should go on the Avenida Kukulcan , also known as the Hotel Zone road, where you can find a bike lane.

Locals go jogging there usually early morning or late in the evening when the heat is not so unbearable.

Did I miss anything? Please let me know, I am just an email away .

Ferry to Isla Mujeres

From Cancun Downtown you can get to Isla Mujeres with Ultramar Ferries . It leaves Puerto Juarez every 30 minutes from Early morning to late at night. You can get there by taxi or Uber

Uber in Cancun Downtown

In Cancun, you can’t get an Uber from the airport but the Uber app works Downtown. However, I discourage you from using it because there is still a lot of hate manifested by taxi drivers.

A safer way to move around is by DIDI App because it’s also used by taxi drivers, so you will be safe.

I wouldn’t hail a random taxi on the street.

Keep in mind that you can use this APP only if you are away from taxi stands. And, although you can use it to get from Downtown to the Hotel Zone, you cannot use it from the Hotel Zone to Downtown. I know it’s weird, but it’s a street unwritten law!

The Top Things To Do in Downtown Cancun

Check out these underrated things to do in downtown Cancun. Foodies, history buffs and shopaholics alike will enjoy these spots.

Sarah Rand • Jan 26, 2024

downtown cancun food tour

Cancun is a popular city of Mexico in the Yucatan peninsula. It is one of Mexico’s most cherished resort destinations, and rightfully so. Cancun is even considered to be the heart of the Mexican Caribbean. Its location is ideal for travelers (and beach lovers) since it faces the Caribbean Sea. It is easily accessible by water or air, so even international travelers from far away places or those wanting to visit its natural harbor via cruise ship will not have trouble finding their way there. The tropical destination attracts millions of tourists every year with its humble yet lively atmosphere. Travelers that visit this Mexican city are in for a treat as they explore Cancun’s rich historical significance, soft white sand beaches, colonial architecture and thriving art scene.

Despite Cancun’s appeal and popularity with tourists , a lot of travelers seldom explore the downtown area of Cancun. To further their cultural knowledge of their travel destination and get familiar with the people of Cancun, it is advisable to visit downtown. While many tourists only really explore the beautiful beaches or the Mayan Ruins (like Chichen Itza, which is located in the Yucatan Peninsula and about three hours away from Cancun) of Mexico, the urban city center has plenty to offer as well. Tourists should be sure to explore places other than the hotel district and not miss out on the popular things to do in downtown.

Cancun’s Historic Sites

downtown cancun food tour

These historical sites may not be within the central area of downtown, but they are easily commutable with public transportation. Cancun is lesser known for its Mayan ruins and historical significance than other places of Mexico, but here are the top Mayan ruins that are within a short distance of downtown Cancun.

The El Rey archeological zone is located around 30 minutes south of downtown Cancun. The ride takes tourists where they can see a small iguana-filled ruin site that dates back to 1250. The El Rey ruins are a great stop for travelers who do not want to venture too far out from the central area of Cancun but still enjoy a cultural excursion. The ruins are open to the public in the daytime, so from around eight in the morning until five in the evening travelers are welcome to explore the ruins on foot. Admissions to the grounds will cost travelers around $3, but travelers may invest in a knowledgeable tour guide should they like to learn more about the site.

El Meco is an even shorter distance from the central areas of Cancun. It is just a few miles from downtown, which takes around 20 minutes to drive. The ancient Mayan ruins are on the northern outskirts of Cancun and are considered a smaller site that travelers can explore in a shorter amount of time. This archaeological site was not always open to the public, so tourists should go to see it if they can. It is the highest Mayan pyramid in the Cancun area and has plenty of palm trees for shade.

Cancun’s Food and Shopping

downtown cancun food tour

From souvenirs to last minute bathing suits or artisan goods, these shopping areas of Cancun are the best. Check out the top places to shop while in downtown Cancun that travelers can cover on foot. These downtown markets and plazas have everything a traveler may need.

El Parque de las Palapas

This quaint downtown plaza has plenty to offer travelers staying in the area. This park is popular with locals, so travelers that want to explore a resident hotspot will appreciate its relaxed environment. Since it is within walking distance of downtown Cancun, many tourists take a stroll and pass the time here. It has park vendors, live music and street food every week. Visitors can purchase authentic churros, marquesitas, empanadas, sopes and esquites (just to name a few). The park is open 24/7 but travelers that want to come at the best time for activities should plan their visit accordingly. Midday or early in the evening are the best times to visit if travelers want a bite to eat. The live music performances often take place on friday evenings.

Avenida Tulum

This is the main street of Cancun (Tulum avenue), which is the most frequented area for tourists. It is easily accessible due to its central location and is close by to the bus stop. Located just off of the hotel district, this is the perfect place to explore Cancun. There are photo opportunities there that will excite tourists like the popular Monumento a la Historia de México. Visitors will also find affordable prices for shopping and restaurants, so they can stay in this area and within their budget easily. It is important to note that the shopping area is open 24/7 but the stores are generally only open during the day.

Mercado 23 & 28

These markets, which are named for their neighborhood number and location, are nearby Avenida Tulum and are frequented by mostly locals. They provide some of the best deals and products to shop from. Mercado 23 is a small market that sells affordable souvenirs, produce, meat and has an assortment of food stalls. Mercado 28 is a large market with plenty of tourism appeal. It is located in a bustling area, so travelers should be well aware of the fast-paced atmosphere. While prices here are technically more expensive than at Mercado 23, there is much more available and it is less expensive than the hotel district shops. The market is open every day of the week and is a great place to explore. Whether travelers prefer the humble Mercado 23 or a more excitable shopping experience like Mercado 28, they are sure to find everything they need.

Cancun’s Unique Experiences

downtown cancun food tour

These tours and activities are exciting and offer special experiences to tourists of downtown Cancun. From culinary journeys to late-night adventures, travelers should consider adding these top spots to their itinerary. Check out the excursions that many tourists overlook but turn out to electrify their trip to Mexico.

Taquerías & Food Tours

There are many taquerías in downtown Cancun that offer some of the best salsa and tacos around. Some of the most popular taquerías (that even locals love) include Tacos Rigo, el Ñero and Tacos Árabes Israel. For travelers who enjoy culinary tourism, Cancun also offers food tours that allow visitors to explore the delicious flavors of Mexico. A popular option is a taco tour, which serves the authentic tastings of family-owned and local restaurants. A local guide brings visitors to a few indoor and outdoor dining spots to showcase Mexican cuisine. Luckily these types of tours are commonly located around El Parque de las Palapas, so tourists do not have to commute far. Handmade tortillas, fresh sauces, guacamole, tacos el pastor and even marquesitas are on the menu during these exciting tours that cost around $25 (plus payment for food at the venues).

Yaxchilan Avenue

Just a five minute walk from Avenida Tulum is the hub for nightlife, Yaxchilan Avenue. This four block stretch lives up to the hype and has plenty to offer visitors. From an exciting selection of bars, restaurants and the hottest nightclubs, this area has a concentrated strip of nightlife attractions that will provide unforgettable experiences. Travelers can hit the bar for affordable drinks (including authentic Mexican tequila), attend a fiesta night with performances and dinner or dance the night away at the club.

Plaza de Toros

An alternative experience in Cancun is attending a bullfight, which has long been a popular form of entertainment. The Plazas de Toros in Cancun is a large venue that seats up to 6,000 spectators. The domed event venue hosts bullfights regularly and actually doubles as a shopping center. So, for travelers looking to take part in all of the excitement and even score a bullfighting souvenir, this is the place to go. Tourists can witness brave matadors challenge the mighty bull in this traditional display of Mexican athleticism and skill. Although this is a valued form of entertainment in Mexican culture, some travelers should avoid attending a bullfight if they are sensitive to violence or aggressive displays.

Things to do in Downtown Cancun: Restaurants, Shopping, and More

Posted on Last updated: February 14, 2023

There are quite a few things to do in downtown Cancun . The downtown area is a part of the touristy city of Cancun that is, well, not too touristy.

While others were flocking straight to Cancun’s beachy ‘hotel zone,’ I wanted to discover what made the industrial ‘ Cancun Centro ‘ tick. And my guess is that if you are reading this article, you’re thinking of doing the same thing.

Downtown Cancun is full of amazing food and restaurants (from street food to high-end), vibrant street art, and TONS of shopping – where you will find everything much cheaper than places like Playa del Carmen and especially Tulum.

Here is my travel guide to Cancun downtown – all the best things to do in downtown Cancun whether you just have an afternoon or up to a couple of days.

Things to do in downtown Cancun - a HUGE travel guide to downtown cancun restaurants, shopping, street art, tours, and more!

How Long do I need in Downtown Cancun?

You may be traveling from Cancun to other places in Yucatan, such as Playa del Carmen , Cozumel , Tulum , or even the yellow city of Izamal . But try to spend some time checking out the city before you go!

Well, that depends, honestly. You could get a lot done in an afternoon if that’s all you have, but it would be more comfortable to spend 2-3 days at a slower pace. But in all honesty, you wouldn’t need any more than that (before you head to the beach)!

Where to Stay in Downtown Cancun

There are quite a lot of cool and unique places to stay in Downtown Cancun! Here is where I stayed and some other favorites.

Selina Boutique Hostel/Hotel Downtown Cancun

Selina Downtown Cancun Boutique hotel and hostel - where to stay in downtown Cancun

If you haven’t heard of Selina before, I suggest checking it out. Selina is a massive chain of accommodation across Central America and other parts of the world that has a bit of something for everyone.

Selina has hostel dorm rooms, micro rooms with a shared bathroom, ensuite boutique hotel rooms, and huge boutique suites as well – all at different price points. They also all have coworking spaces, wellness classes each week (from yoga and meditation to salsa dancing), fun bar/restaurants, and a pool area too.

I think the inclusion of ALL of this really sets Selina apart. Each location is unique and boutique, with colorful decor, murals, and a fun atmosphere. They are also usually VERY well located in the center of town.

Their downtown Cancun location was no different – it was RIGHT across from the bus station and within walking distance of everything. I tried out a micro-room here, which was everything I needed for a few nights on a budget.

The complex here is massive, with an amazing rooftop yoga/wellness space overlooking the city and a comfortable cowoking space too. The pool area is beautiful, surrounded with murals and wooded decor. The bar and restaurant area has so much space to chill or relax, and they also had a pool party each Saturday!

The downtown Cancun Selina was a perfect mixture of convenience, fun, and uniqueness – which is what I look for in a place to stay! I recommend it highly.

Nomads Hotel + Hostel Downtown Cancun

Nomdas Hotel-Hostel Downtown Cancun

The Nomads hotel + hostel in Downtown Cancun is the second place I would recommend to stay here. Similarly to Selina, they have both hotel and hostel rooms for any budget, and have a very social atmosphere.

THere’s a cafe/restaurant in the building on the ground floor, and perhaps the best aspect is their rooftop pool (with a view of course).

Located at the top of Avenida Nader, you can walk to MANY great restaurants on the same street as well as pretty much everything else in downtown Cancun as well.

Things to Do in Downtown Cancun

These things to do in downtown Cancun will be broken into sections on activities and places to visit, places to stay, shopping, and restaurants. Scroll to whichever section you need!

Downtown Cancun Street Art Tours + Adventures

Downtown cancun street art

Downtown Cancun has some amazing street art, which is something very special about the area. No matter where you wander, you are sure to catch glimpses of some amazing murals.

You can explore by foot, but if you want to know more about the art and its history, you should check out a Street Art Tour of Cancun Centro. The well-rated tour below mixes street art AND street food, which is pretty much perfect.

Downtown Cancun Shopping

Downtown Cancun shopping needs it’s own category. If there’s any reason to come to downtown Cancun, it would be to shop, shop, and shop some more.

Shop for clothes; shop for souvenirs; shop for hats and purses and shoes and produce. You can get everything here, and at a MUCH cheaper price than other places (cough cough Tulum). Here are the best places to shop in Downtown Cancun:

Mercado 28 downtown cancun mexico Quintana Roo

I don’t know where to begin with Mercado 28 – the biggest, most maze-like, most overwhelming and incredible and colorful and bustling market EVER.

This market is where you would go to get STUFF – classic Mexican souvenirs, clothing, jewelry (of all kinds), leather, bags, shoes, and everything you can think of.

I wandered past here without knowing what to expect, and stumbled out three hours later, having haggled my life away and $100 poorer for things I would be about $400 poorer for in Tulum. Oh, I had a great time, and I know you will too!

Parque de Las Palapas

Parque de Las Palapas market stalls downtown cancun

Parque de Las Palapas is great for shopping, food, nightlife, and general community! During the afternoons/evenings there’s are a few dozen market stalls selling mostly souvenirs and jewelry.

One of my favorite stalls had lovely copper jewelry that I hadn’t seen anywhere else in Quintana Roo – as well as being super cheap for only 350 pesos (they would be at least 1500 in Tulum).

mercado 23 downtown cancun vegetables and produce

Mercado 23 is another smaller street market with more variety. Besides just souvenirs (of which it still has many), you can also find all kinds of produce at Mercado 23.

From fresh fruit and veg, to all kinds of meat, to fresh flowers or birthday supplies, this market has a little of everything and would be perfect if you want to cook up something nice.

Downtown Cancun Restaurants – A Food Guide from Cheap to Fancy

I never expected downtown Cancun to be so much of a foodie haven. From cheap restaurants and street food to super trendy restaurants, there’s a little of everything! One of the very best things to do in downtown Cancun is to EAT! Here’s what I found:

Where to Find Downtown Cancun Street Food

I mean, to be honest, there is street food on every corner of downtown Cancun. But here are some of the most concentrated areas:

Parque de Las Palapas things to do in downtown cancun street food, shopping, live music

You’ll see Parque de Lap Palapas multiple times on this guide of things to do in Downtown Cancun. This is the central gathering space of downtown Cancun, with a HUGE stage, markets, and TONS of street food.

The corner of the park is covered in tables, with savory food on one side and sweets on the other. On the weekends Parque de Las Palapas will have live shows and music, children playing, families gathering, and more.

downtown cancun street food Parque de Las Palapas

There are at least 20 different stalls, offering classic Mexican fare and other things too. From sopes, salbutes, gringas, tacos, and empanadas to hamburgers, hot dogs, and cheat dishes with rice and beans… you’ll find what you are looking for here. And it will be CHEAP.

On the sweets side, there are tons of Marquesita stands (like a rolled up thin crispy waffle) of which you can get sweet or savory (like a crepe). There are also churros, fried bananas, and more.

it’s open all the time, but the busiest hours are from just before sunset to 10ish at night.

Street Food Near the ADO Station and Collectivo Stops

For lack of a better term, some amazing downtown Cancun street food is near the ADO bus station, shuttle stops, and collective pickup points. This is where you will get dropped off if you take any transport to Cancun Centro.

Around here there are lots of shops and stands selling everything from sweets to tacos. Have a look to see that you can find!

Best Downtown Cancun Breakfast Restaurants and Cafes

I only went to a few, but they were great!

Café con Gracia

Cafe con gracia downtown cancun breakfast restaurants - bagels, shakes, and sandwiches

This super cure spot is known for amazing frappes and milkshakes, paninis, bagels, and waffle sandwiches.

It’s got a front and back patio with great chill areas to spend a warm afternoon.

Selina Restaurant + Cafe

Selina downtown cancun huevos rancheros

Selina is a hostel, boutique hotel, restaurant, pool, bar, AND cafe… right in the center of downtown Cancun.

You can get a delicious breakfast (or lunch or dinner – hello pizza oven!) here, next to the pool and ping pong table. The cafe is next to the front entrance by the street – great for takeaways or quick chill time.

Rooster Cafe

The Rooster - downtown cancun breakfast eggs benedict

Rooster Cafe is a cute wooden diner-style restaurant with tons of delicious options. For breakfast, choose from 5 styles of eggs Benedict or an entire menu of different brekky dishes.

They have great coffee, lunch options, and friendly service too.

Best Cheaper Mexican Restaurants in Downtown Cancun

Want something more authentic? No problem. There are plenty of downtown Cancun restaurants with cheaper local fare and a bit of an atmosphere.

Calle Tulipanes

Things to do in downtown cancun - walk down CAlle Tulipanes and choose a restaurant or bar!

Calle Tulipanes is the busy and bustling street to walk down if you want classic Mexican restaurants with competitive deals.

it’s the kind of street where EVERY restaurant has waiters outside busting to tell you their special deal to get you into their restaurant. You’ll find classic Mexican decor and mostly cheap prices at these downtown Cancun restaurants, as well as some nightclubs too.

Mercado 28 Restaurants

When you shop at Mercado 28 (which is inevitable), you’ll find plenty of colorful Mexican restaurants while you are getting lost in the stalls.

Like all the stalls, people will be outside with menus beckoning you inside with special deals.

Taqueria Coapeñitos

Taqueria Coapeñitos cheap food in downtown cancun

This is a spot on the north end of Av Nader with super cheap tacos and Mexican food. It’s pretty cute, too!

Nicer Downtown Cancun Restaurants

There are tons of trendy restaurants in downtown Cancun, and a majority of these are located along Av Carlos Nader . Here are some standouts:

Best burgers in downtown cancun Mu Burgerhouse

Mu Burgerhouse

Mu Burgerhouse is the place to go if you are looking for a leafy and trendy atmosphere, great tunes at a solid volume, and delicious burgers.

El Tigre y El Toro downtown cancun restaurant open air avenida nader pizza and wine

El Tigre Y El Toro

This lovely open-air garden restaurant specializes in pizza and wine. It has a great vibe for a nice sit-down meal.

La Coyota – Cocina y Mixología

La Coyota restaurant and mixology downtown Cancun Av Nader

La Coyota is the trendy restaurant on Av Nader that reminded me the most of Tulum. With wooded branches and a sleek atmosphere, it’s a great spot to choose for dinner and drinks in an upscale Mexican fusion style.

Onigiri Casa Poke

Onigiri Casa Poke downtown cancun restaurants

Onigiri is a cute poke house with a menu full of poke bowls (including tuna, salmon, shrimp, and even beef, chicken, steak, and more).

However, the best thing about this place is definitely the build-your-own poke bowl. You can choose 3 proteins, 2 bases, 3 extras, and 2 toppings. They’re definitely better deals than the menu bowls IMO.

Socio Naiz downtown cancun upscale mexican restaurant

This is a more upscale Mexican restaurant with all the classics in a trendy indoor/outdoor setting.

Downtown Cancun Nightlife

There are a few places to go after dark in downtown Cancun – and they’re all pretty much what you’d expect. There are sports bars with cheap drinks and bustling reggaetón bars. Here are some options if that’s what you’re into!

Beach Please

Beach Please downtown cancun nightclub

If you can’t find this place, you will surely hear it from far away! It’s in the middle of Calle Tulipanes and has loud bumping Reggaetón/bass music, tons of waiters on the street trying to tell you about their deals (and 65 peso cocktails) and even fog machines! If you’re ready for a down and dirty Cancun night, try here or maybe next door at MANGOS bar.

Botanero Nacional

Botanero Nacional downtown cancun nightlife and bars

Botanero Nacional is right on the edge of Parque de las Palapas. And yes, you read that sign right – 21 peso beers and tequila shots. Wow!

It’s a sports bar and gets pretty busy on the weekends, so pop your head in to see what you think.

Getting to the Rest of Cancun from Downtown

You’ll definitely eventually want to check out what Cancun is famous for- BEACHES! I recommend staying a few days to do downtown properly and then moving to a place on the beach for convenience.

If not, you can take taxis or busses to the beach areas. Try to get taxis on the street or father from the bus stations as they will be cheaper that way.

If you are heading on to Playa del Carmen or Tulum, I have plenty more guides to these places, too!

🇲🇽 Traveling to Mexico soon?

These are the Mexico travel resources I use and recommend:

🏨 Hotels : I always find the best deals for Mexico hotels and resorts on Expedia or Booking.com . If you prefer a vacation rental, check VRBO as they are often cheaper than AirBnB’s added fees!

✈️ Flights : I recommend using Skyscanner for the best Mexico flight deals. Be sure to sign up for their price alerts for your preferred travel dates.

🚗 Rental Cars : I recommend using Discover Cars because you can compare multiple car rental companies and see detailed ratings for overall value, ease of pick-up, efficiency of agents, car condition, and overall time spent.

🚙 Cancun Airport Transportation : I recommend booking a private transfer with Cancun Airport Transportation for the quickest and most hassle-free option!

🤿 Tours & Activities: I always use Viator or GetYourGuide for booking tours and activities in Mexico. You can cancel up to 24 hours before the tour for a full refund, plus they have excellent customer service if you were to have any issues.

🚨 Travel Insurance: After my Dad broke his hand in a taxi accident in Playa del Carmen, I always recommend buying travel insurance before your trip for added peace of mind! I recommend Travel Insurance Master for short trips or Safety Wing for digital nomads.

☀️ Biodegradable Sunscreen : Don’t forget to add biodegradable sunscreen to your Mexico packing list ! Regular sunscreen is prohibited when swimming in the ocean and cenotes in Mexico, so you’ll need to pack some biodegradable sunscreen for sun protection. I recommend Sun Bum Sunscreen , which is reef-friendly, vegan, and cruelty-free.

Top 7 Things To Do In Downtown Cancun

By: Author Graciela Zamora

Downtown Cancun is full of hotels, bars, hostels, restaurants, and squares, and although it does not have nearby beaches like the hotel zone, it does have a very vibrant life and is a perfect place to immerse into the culture and history of the city. Here’s a guide to the top seven things you can do in downtown Cancun .

downtown cancun food tour

Stroll the Parque de las Palapas

One of the most iconic and representative sites of downtown Cancun, it was the first main square of the city and is still a vibrant meeting place for locals. Here you will find culture, traditional Mexican food, dance shows, and other cultural events. The Park of the Palapas is a recreational space with a forum where many events take place, especially on the weekend. There are many restaurants and bars you can visit near this city area. Parque de las Palapas is located on Tulum Avenue in front of the Government Palace. It’s open 24 hours, but businesses open from 9 AM to midnight.

Explore Mercado 28

The Cancun flea market, better known as “Mercado 28,” is another place you must visit. Located in Plaza San Miguel in downtown Cancun, you can find all kinds of handicrafts and souvenirs in this market, including apparel, jewelry, ceramic, and clay sculptures, among many other Mexican artisan work. Don’t forget to haggle; it’s almost customary to negotiate the price. There are many small street-food vendors and low-cost restaurants and stalls within the market that offer delicious traditional food of the region. The market is located on Xel-Ha Mz 13, 28, 77509 Cancun, Q.R. It’s open from 8 AM to 7 PM every day of the week.

Shop at Mercado 23

Mercado 28 is not the only market you’ll find in downtown Cancun; there is also the Mercado 23, which is a bit similar, with the difference that local food, sweets, and handicrafts are the main offerings. Visitors looking to stock up on fresh fruit and produce will find the best variety. You will enjoy strolling around this market; although not as large as Mercado 28, it has the feel of a less touristy place with a more local vibe. The market is located on Ciricote 15, 23, 77500 Cancún, Q.R. It’s open from 8 AM to 7 PM every day of the week.

Go Taco Shop Hopping

One of the best things to do in Downtown Cancun is to go “Taqueria” hopping. There are many great taco shops in the city where you can taste authentic Mexican street food without paying exorbitant prices as you will in the Hotel Zone. Popular downtown “Taquerias” include Taqueria Coapeñitos , Taqueria Los Chachalacos , and Pescaditos . If you want to taste the best street food in Cancun, then you can book a guided street food tour that runs for approximately 3 hours and stops at the most famous spots. Just be sure you bring an empty stomach because there’s so much to eat and taste in this food tour.

Enjoy a Restaurant Feast

Cancun emanates endless magic while managing to stay true to its roots. You can experience the traditional gastronomy of Quintana Roo in downtown Cancun. Here you can eat, drink, discover, dance, and then go back to rest at your beautiful hotel. Although most restaurants in the hotel zone offer a great gourmet experience, it doesn’t compare with the local food, where the taste and smell of the region’s gastronomy will captivate your senses. The city also vibrates with culinary innovation, from fancy downtown restaurants showcasing international cuisine to eateries with local star chefs. Popular spots include La Habichuela , La Fonda del Zancudo , and Du Mexique . There’s a vast selection, and your only issue will be which one to choose.

Discover Mexican Street Art

Downtown Cancun is famous as the street art capital, with fantastic murals painted by world-renowned artists all over town. You’ll surely spot them when exploring the area; however, you can also book a street art tour that takes you to all the best sites in Downtown Cancun. Even though you can admire the murals by walking on your own, the best part about booking a tour is that you’ll also get the back story behind the artist’s vision and learn to identify different graffiti styles and techniques.

Even though you’ll find numerous bars in the Hotel Zone, downtown Cancun also boasts many unique bars. There are fabulous venues that offer live music, a DJ, craft beer, wine and cocktails, delicious local cuisine, and the best part is that all at more affordable prices than in the Hotel Zone. Mambocafé , and Congo Bar (a mini-version of the Coco Bongo nightclub) are where the locals go to party at night.

While most travelers and tourists will enjoy their stay at the paradisiacal beaches of the hotel zone, downtown Cancun also has a lot to offer. You’ll have a lot of fun trying out these downtown experiences in Cancun.

The Best Walking Food Tour of Cancun with Eat Mexico | A Chance to See A Different Side of Cancun

When I found out that Eat Mexico had started doing walking food tour of Cancun , I jumped at the chance to work with them again. I had done their walking food tour of Mexico City last year and knew I was in for a good time.

One of the reasons I most wanted to do this tour was to see a different side of Cancun. I’ve been to Cancun several times but only doing the touristic things. Nearly six million international tourists visit Cancun per year, most of them never leaving the hotel zone. Many of them don’t even leave their resorts. I feel like it’s difficult to find authentic experiences in Cancun. This tour would be a way to experience a part of Cancun that many tourists never see.

We started the tour at an authentic market located near the central bus terminal in town. The market was filled with locals going about their shopping, picking out fruits, vegetables and fresh meats from the many vendors.

Nearly six years ago, I left my job at an Oklahoma City law firm and embarked on a journey around the world. At the time, I thought I would only be gone for 6 months, but the more I traveled, the longer my bucket list became.  Flashpacker describes how I travel. Rather than traveling as the normal world wise backpacker and staying in hostel dorms, I prefer a more comfortable experience, and typically stay in private rooms, take Ubers instead of taxis, and now use a suitcase instead of a backpack. Foodie, on the other hand, describes one of the key reasons why I travel. I love to pick a central “base camp” and then explore the surrounding area, really immersing myself in the culture and interacting with the people, and enjoying and exploring the food of an area is an essential part of this experience.

Cancun without the crowds: Meet Isla Mujeres, a quieter Mexican getaway

The water surrounding Isla Mujeres is a vivid blue.

As soon as I arrived at Isla Mujeres, I knew I was going to experience a completely different side of Cancun.

With turquoise-blue waters, soft sand beaches and ancient Mayan ruins, Cancun is one of the top travel destinations for Americans seeking out a tropical getaway. Located on the Yucatán Penisula, the city drew 30 million visitors in 2022. It’s an easy place to visit and offers visitors the most hotels in the country .

A gorgeous beach locale? Definitely. Peaceful? Not exactly.

But looking out to the bright blue horizon, you’ll see the secluded haven I’m going to instead: Impression Isla Mujeres by Secrets .

Those looking to escape the loud parties and crowds of Cancun but still bask in the Yucatan’s natural beauty should consider Isla Mujeres, a small island 8 miles northeast of Cancun. In 2022, Isla Mujeres saw only 20% of Cancun’s tourist numbers , which makes it a more serene beach vacation.

Impression Isla Mujeres by Secrets is a newly opened all-inclusive luxury resort that caters to a quieter Mexican getaway. A personal butler, four levels of infinity pools and even private boat transfers to and from Cancun are just a few of the amenities guests at the luxurious adults-only resort can take advantage of.

Here’s what it’s like to vacation at Impression Isla Mujeres by Secrets.

What makes Isla Mujeres so special?

Isla Mujeres translates to “Island of Women,” and it is said to be where the Mayan goddess Ixchel resides. The only way to reach the island is by boat, a 15-minute ride from Cancun.

Like Cancun, Isla Mujeres has pristine beaches but with a more laid-back vibe. Think of the island as a less overwhelming, more intimate version of the tourist hub. There is a downtown square, but it’s nothing like Cancun’s party block, which I found overwhelming the last time I visited.

Here’s what Isla Mujeres has to offer visitors:

  • On display is Isla Mujeres’ natural beauty. The island is surrounded by an azure sea so vivid it looks as if it were dyed. The calm waters invite travelers to spend most of their time there, and the island is known for flourishing marine life – it’s sometimes called the whale shark capital. If you don’t spot one of these docile sea creatures, whose population has declined more than 50% over the past 75 years, there are still plenty of fish and giant shells to see below the surface. Even the resort pays tribute to the gentle giants by being the home base for shark conservation nonprofit Saving Our Sharks Foundation. A portion of each stay at Impressions Isla Mujeres by Secrets goes to the local organization, meaning guests are supporting “marine biodiversity conservation, promoting sustainable fishing practices, conservation efforts and responsible tourism,” Erica Doyne, senor vice president of marketing and communications at Hyatt Hotels Corp., told USA TODAY.
  • As for non-living sea wonders, the island is home to the Museo Subacuático de Arte , one of fewer than 10 underwater art museums worldwide. Since 2010, visitors have been able to swim among the more than 500 life-size submerged sculptures, which also add biomass to the reef system. If going below the surface isn’t your thing, you can book a tour by glass-bottom boat.
  • Though the most popular of ancient Mayan temples, Chichén-Itza, is on the peninsula, Isla Mujeres has its share of cultural and historical sites. Visitors can make their way to the Mayan Temple of Ixchel, perched atop a striking seaside cliff in Punta Sur on the most southern point of the island, a short distance from the resort. On the mornings of the new year, Isla Mujeres residents gather here to greet the first rays of sunlight.

What is it like to stay at Impressions Isla Mujeres?

Relaxing and recharging are the focal points of the adults-only resort, which opened in 2023 as the second property in the Impression by Secrets brand, run by World of Hyatt. You can skip the front desk; check-in is done on the boat. Upon arrival at the dock, guests are greeted with a welcome drink and their personal butler, who is easily reachable via WhatsApp. During my stay, I often forgot I was in Cancun and not some private island in the Caribbean (or at least, how I imagine that would be like).

The property: The ocean is the resort's centerpiece, and its vistas are prioritized, from the rooftop infinity pool to the oceanfront rooms with their private terrace complete with an outdoor hot tub. Woven throughout the property are subtle reminders of the sea and the creatures within, such as sculptures of whale sharks by Mexican artist César Menchaca using upcycled plastic and elegant lobby seating echoing the shape of a starfish.

The property was once an abandoned hotel, but you’d never know it. Looking up, you can see how the whitewashed resort pays tribute to its location by resembling a seashell. Its cliffside location, tucked-away courtyards and archways give it a Santorini architectural feel.

“Built into the natural landscape atop a coastal cliff, the development of Impression Isla Mujeres by Secrets was designed with purpose and inspired by a profound respect for the natural beauty and cultural richness of Isla Mujeres,” Doyne said.

A dock wraps around the 125-room resort’s beachfront, providing plenty of cabana space for guests to hunker down in and enclosing a swimming oasis. Hammocks hang off the dock, inches above the water, inviting you in for a daytime nap.

With spring break around the corner, it'll cost two adults during the week of April 5-12 about $1,100 a night for an ocean-view room with two double beds, or one king bed and a sofa area. This rate includes a terrace, free laundry service, boat transfers, all amenities, and, of course, food and beverage. You can also use World of Hyatt points to book, and there’s a member rate.

The same week at fellow Isla Mujeres high-end resort Hotel Privilege Aluxes Isla Mujeres will run you more than $4,190 a night for an ocean-view suite, which has a large living area, food and beverage and similar amenities. (Although this seems a high rate, it is cheaper later in the year. A normal room is $1,949 in September, but there’s no terrace or promised ocean views.)

Eating well: The all-inclusive food and drink at Impression Isla Mujeres were top-notch, with eight dining options to choose from, ranging from Italian to Japanese cuisine and nine bars and lounges. My favorite restaurant was the breezy La Vista, which served Mexican fare to outdoor tables overlooking the water.

It was my first time at an all-inclusive resort, and I indulged almost daily in the unlimited room service, with help from an in-room touchscreen tablet. If I didn’t hear the doorbell, staff would place the food in a two-way cabinet, lending to my peace and quiet.

To do: Besides the difficult choice between lounging by the pool or beach, guests can participate in robust daily programming, from wellness offerings to cultural enrichment workshops. I attended a smoke-cleansing session during sunset, and not only were the views breathtaking but I learned more about the Indigenous spiritual practice. Those who want more of a thrill can try out the four-story waterslide that empties into the ocean, go snorkeling or take one of the free bikes out for a ride. It takes only about 40 minutes to cruise the entire island.
