First gig at O2 Brixton (as well as first time seeing Jungle live) and we were blown away by the venue as well as by the quality of the sound. To be honest, I was a bit sceptical about seeing Jungle transpose their unique style in a live setting; however, I would give their effort a solid 8.5 / 10. The show began with a kid breakdancing to one of the song's album and this really put the crowd in a great mood - something the band was able to sustain throughout most the show. Points taken off the overall score mainly due to two things:

1) The difficulty in keeping a high energy level through some of their more subdued track that necessitate the group to remain mostly static behind their instruments

2) A few hiccups here and there - starting "Drops" on the wrong key, then struggling to get it back on track as well as the challenges of staying tight through a few of the more complex numbers

Overall though, a great evening, with much dancing despite being in the Circle (seated area). Busy Earnin was the highlight - and who can hold anything against a band that finishes off their set with confetti cannons spewing gold and silver glitter all over the place?!

Will look to catching them live again for sure!

Fan-tastic!!!!

Really looked forward to this event. More excited even than when we saw Will Smith at Blackpool if that was possible (but that was because even until he came on I couldnt quite believe it was happening, I mean - Will Smith in Blackpool, nahhh).

Anyway, Jungle at The Invisible Wind factory.

I wasnt disappointed. I LOVE Jungle. They are mesmerising to watch. Sounded perfect every song. The moment they start playing their opening riffs the whole crowd are pumped. Venue was superb, unique. Perfect for this type of gig. First time we’d been but I would definitely go again.

If I could only see one band from now on though, it would be these folks. Felt very intimate, like they’re playing to you! Let me be clear, Jungle were Ay-mazing! It was a truly memorable experience. My advice: 1) see Jungle; 2) go to a gig at TIWF; 3) if possible, go see a Jungle gig at TIWF.

Jungle is a fairly new band on the scene. From their head nodding basslines to their funky rhythm, there's nothing to dislike about them. I love listening to them on my phone but watching them live is a completely different experience. The energy they produced on stage shook the crowd like a live wire. I started dancing when they came out and didn't stop until they ended. There wasn't much interaction with the crowd but that was because they were pulling out hit after hit from their amazing album. I was ik euphoria for the whole show. My expectations were met. I left a happy man and would love to see them again.

Just OK. Don't get me wrong, I love Jungle and their debut album. But their concert à la Cigale in Paris was just good enough and somehow disappointing. First we wait one hour after the opening before their dared to show on stage. Then they sounded like they were just rehearsing. The lead vocal has so much soul in his voice that I would have enjoyed to feel it in the acting of the band too. But I did not felt the vibe. To me, it was a bit too clean: no improvisation or so little, not much engagement neither. Maybe it is just me, or this is what you get when you make your audience wait too much.

Good show. Band were good and sounded excellent. However the venue was piss poor. Awful place to see a band. 2/3 of the viewing space is above the stage, which sounds great until you realise that only the people at the front can see - everyone else is blocked from view. Also it took over an hour to get into the show as the door staff and management team at Pryzm were frighteningly inefficient. I have no idea what they were going but we queued for an hour and missed the first 30 minutes. Woeful - will not be attending a gig at New Slang in Pryzm again. Awful experience

The show was amazing... So were the artists! I expected the performance to be great when I was buying the tix, but I didn't expected it to be THAT great. I had a fantastic time on the dancefloor with my friends, the crowd was SUPER nice, SUPERfancy and SUPERpolite.

For me, the greatest joy at the shows is to see musicians to enjoy themselves while performing... And how the band acted on scene was awesome. You can literally see that the guys loved EVERY chord they've made for the audience.

10/10, would totally revisit

Jungle has a pretty cool sound and is super funky but I have to admit I was very skeptical and wasn't sure if they were going to deliver live - Boy was I wrong! The energy was great, them, the band and the back up singers! Jungle is from London and are described as modern soul but they are more than that. You can hear the 70's funk inspiration - perfect for a good concert with loads of dancing. They played at a medium sized venue and thet carried themselves pretty well. I recommend a Jungle concert to anyone :)

I've never seen them in concert. Only bcus they haven't made their way to my city. I guarantee that I'm their #1 FAN in ST. LOUIS, MO!!! I really hope they make it to the midwest in 2020. I will definitely be in attendance. I shared their videos with our main Entertainment Report here in STL. He's jamming to them as I type.

Next Tour Schedule should include - St. Louis, MO - great venues - The Pageant, Delmar Hall or The Ready Room.

MIND. BLOWING. What a great performance by this band. I have been a huge fan of them and they really did not disappoint, I read many reviews of their concerts and everyone said they are good live so my expectations were pretty high. One thing is listening to them on iMusic but another is seeing them live, it was unbelievable, 10/10 flew all the way from Atlanta to Washington to see them and it was totally worth it.

Amazing sound quality (congrats to the sound guys), and incredibly tight band. Voices are top notch. Great energy. Don't remember seeing the Germans (if you excuse me the stereotypical comment) on the crowd dancing so much since a while! Short (they only have an album after all), but loads of fun! 10/10 would see again.

Drake Changes ‘Madonna’ Lyrics to Rihanna at Jungle Tour Opener in Houston: Live Review

Drake opened his Jungle Tour at Houston's Toyota Center on Sunday, May, 24. Read the full review here!

Drake performs in 2015.

Drake knew he flubbed at Coachella.

The rapper had already heard all of the criticisms of his headlining set at the festival in April. He promised that he wasn’t going to have a show similar to that, one where he seemed like a boy delivering ample amounts of sound and effort into a vacuum.

See latest videos, charts and news

At the opening night (May 24) of his Jungle Tour in Houston, part of a finale to his second Houston Appreciation Weekend, Drake made plenty of concessions, including one that signaled a roar within the city’s Toyota Center.

Sabrina Carpenter's 'Espresso' Leads U.K. Chart Race

Sunday night meant that the show was completely on him. No pool parties to feign attendance at, no tribute events where he had to deliver speeches like a politician. No softball games for him to play left field in a number 24 jersey. Just him and the stage, him and the moving “jungle” he had created at Coachella that he decided to bring to Houston.

Drake’s Houston Appreciation Weekend, Day One Recap: Bun B Honored, Future Performs

“Oh my God, it feels good to be home,” he said after opening the show with “Legend,” from his Feb. 2015 album, If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late . “I was born in Toronto, but it feels like Houston adopted me.”

The adopted portion has rubbed some locals the wrong way during the four-day mix of parties, charity events and concerts. Drake, always one to publicly show emotion when the time calls for it, made a calculated barb at detractors of not only him, but the weekend itself.

“I don’t give a f–k what any n—a say about me — this is a city that I love and I’m gonna give y’all all of me,” he stomped before leading into “Worst Behavior.” “F–k what they gotta say.”

Two More Alleged Drake Songs Leak

The celebrities, some of whom have been in Houston during the duration of HAW were shown on the Toyota Center video board. Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston and New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. were among the many famous faces, some of whom brought as many as 50 people as part of an entourage to converge upon the downtown Houston arena.

“ Madonna ,” the track which led to the Queen of Pop sealing a much talked about kiss on Drake’s lips in April was flipped instead to honor Rihanna. (Watch the video above.) The crowd bobbed and jerked when the opening chords of “Know Yourself” arrived and counted up to 10 before being led into “10 Bands.”

Is This Drake & Beyoncé’s ‘Can I’ Collaboration?

For a weekend that showed much of Drake’s extended reach among various fields of entertainment, the opening night of the Jungle tour, the crown jewel of this year’s HAW lacked in the guests department. Native Houstonian Travi$ Scott , he of “Company” fame from IYRTITL didn’t appear. Nor did anyone else for that matter. For two hours, it was Drake, offering jokes and banter, omitting Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry’s name from his “0-100” track to placate Houston Rockets fans by his lonesome.

His voice stood proud during “Jungle,” shifted downward when performing “Hold On, We’re Going Home” for the lovers in the audience and decided to close with a reprise of “Legend.”

“H-Town until I die,” he stated with emphasis, walking off the stage rather satisfied.

Inside Diplo’s Private Jungle Paradise

By Mayer Rus

Photography by Frank Frances

Styled by Tessa Watson

The preeminent German poet-philosopher Johann Wolfgang von Goethe famously described architecture as “frozen music,” opining that “the state of mind produced by architecture is similar to the effect of music.” Over 150 years later, Frank Zappa —a somewhat less august personage, perhaps, but nevertheless prescient—reframed Goethe’s meditation on the corporeal and the ethereal: “Music, in performance, is a type of sculpture. The air in the performance space is sculpted into something,” Zappa professed. One wonders what type of music might be frozen in the bold volumes and interwoven planes of the Jamaican pleasure dome created by Grammy-winning celebrity DJ and producer Thomas Wesley Pentz, better known as Diplo. Given his penchant for genre-bending and -breaking, mixing and remixing, the property reflects not so much a specific kind of music but Diplo’s approach to music and creativity in general. With its three dominant notes of concrete, wood, and lush greenery, the house feels like a mash-up of its rainforest setting, the land reconfigured and refined in ways that parallel the sampling and refashioning that are hallmarks of the musician’s practice. The rhythmic interplay of the artificial and the natural, the different pitches and textures of the various spaces, all offer a glimpse into Diplo’s dexterity as a songwriter and his intuitive grasp of what makes a project work.

Jamaica has loomed large for Diplo as an artistic lodestar and haven of inspiration since the beginning of his career. “For a little island, this country has had such a powerful cultural impact around the world. There’s magic here,” the musician insists. Roughly 10 years ago, he took a leap of faith and purchased 50 acres of land on the northeast side of the island to create an ambitious, off-the-grid retreat for family and friends, far from the madding crowd. (In 2023, he added a neighboring 12-acre plot to the compound.) “It was a crazy place to build,” he confesses, citing the myriad challenges of construction, power, and access to the Edenic plot. “This project was all about patience. There were so many ways that it could have failed, but we kept finding solutions. I thought that, if nothing else, at least I own a bunch of banana trees.”

To tackle the herculean project, Diplo did what he does best—he assembled a team of inspired artists and artisans and set them to the task at hand, in this case taming the jungle while still preserving its wildly exotic sense of place. Looking beyond predictable boldface starchitects, he commissioned Lauren Crahan of the Brooklyn-based practice Freecell Architecture , a firm known for its experimental investigations of volumetric relationships and material tectonics. Architectural designer Gia Wolff , a frequent Freecell collaborator who focuses on the performative aspects of architecture and the reciprocal relationship between the user and the environment, was an integral part of the team. Diplo tapped Sara Nataf, his longtime creative director, to outfit the home, ably abetted by Katelyn Hinden, Diplo’s indefatigable assistant and first lieutenant. “I had these four awesome women controlling my life, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. They get shit done,” he avers.

A side view of the structure suggests a deceptively vertical orientation. “This is a house that asks people to explore and wander. The views unfold as you ascend ever higher,” says Gia Wolff.

For her part, Crahan returns the compliment. “Wes,” as she calls Diplo, “was incredibly open to hearing our ideas, what excited us. His whole life is collaborating and fostering artists,” the architect says. Crahan and Wolff began their work by surveying the land with machete-wielding bushmen clearing paths. “The forest was a treasure chest, with hills, lowlands, grottoes, all manner of trees, and a variety of microclimates. A lot of our work was unpacking it and figuring out how to make connections between the landscape elements,” Wolff states. After determining the precise locations for the main house and subsidiary structures (like the freestanding recording studio pavilion), the design team turned their attention to defining the organization of exterior and interior spaces based upon the proportion and character of the individual rooms and volumes. “Wes has traveled all over the world, and he’s spent a lot of time in tropical places like India and Brazil. We found a nice intersection of interest in the work of people like Geoffrey Bawa , Oscar Niemeyer , Paulo Mendes da Rocha , and Roberto Burle Marx . Ultimately, we decided that concrete was a natural choice to think about this building. Cast concrete allowed us to make bold, simple volumes that can be in dialogue with the jungle,” Crahan explains.

Loosely divided into a private sphere for Diplo’s use and a side for guest accommodations, the house is centered on a pool and communal dining area. Connective tissues in the form of bridges, trellises, and breezeways weave the structure into a single indoor-outdoor organism, alive to the ever-changing beats and moods of nature. It is a house designed to celebrate the rites and rituals of everyday life, creating a sense of community through shared conventions and rhythms, its openness tying its inhabitants simultaneously to the jungle landscape and to one another. “Lauren and Gia were obsessed with light and shadow, and they considered every part of the day. The house changes from morning to noon to sunset, so time enters as an element of the design—the movement of clouds, the rain, the sunshine,” Diplo affirms.

“If you want to know who Diplo is, just look at his house,” says Nataf, a creative powerhouse whose purview extends to all facets of Diplo’s world, from set design and fashion to brand development and business ventures. She describes the home as a “heavenly stoner palace, where every nook and corner is meant to be a place where you can get inspired and create, or simply chill and contemplate.” The decor is calculated for supreme comfort and ease, with elements that nod to the many countries where Diplo has traveled and the things he loves. “Everything has meaning, everything has a backstory connected to Wes’s life,” Hinden adds, citing the many obstacles she and Nataf faced in specifying textiles and furnishings able to withstand the extreme jungle climate. On that point, Diplo remains sanguine: “The sun is really hard on the fabrics, but I’m okay with that. It’s part of the rawness of this place. Here, every tree has a personality, a soul, and that’s what you want to embrace.”

Indeed, the primacy of the environment is underscored by bespoke elements like the tile mural by Sofía Londoño that graces a side of the pool. An homage to the cellular structure of plant life, the mural acts as a bridge between the verdant jungle and the muscular, monochromatic concrete. Londoño’s husband, Carlos Morera, spearheaded the landscape design with his team at Los Angeles–based Geoponika (formerly Cactus Store Gardens). “There are certain places where you can’t simply impose a landscape,” Morera says of his seemingly discreet manipulations and interventions. “The jungle here has such a defined character that the best you can do is to try to coax it into the life of the house, to make it feel like a natural and inextricable part of the architecture. We analyzed the existing landscape and then tried to re-create some of the all-star moments without looking like anything was forced or alien to the site,” he adds.

Surveying his domain, Diplo feels confident that the years spent cultivating his island refuge were well worth the incredible toil and trouble. “One of the most inspirational things about this place is just hanging out by the banana trees by the pond with the turtles. There are stories and wonders everywhere, not just the house and the interiors,” he muses. “In the middle of the night, you’re surrounded by the soundtrack of Jamaica—a million cicadas and birds and crickets and always dancehall beats drifting in from miles away. It’s what I love about Jamaica, the sounds of the ocean, rivers, animals, buses, and chaos. We’re so high up we only hear it as a kind of soothing ambience. It feels like my medium.”

Diplo’s Jamaican retreat appears in AD’ s June 2024 issue. To see his home in print, subscribe to AD .

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

jungle tour opener

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

jungle tour opener

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

jungle tour opener

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

jungle tour opener

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

jungle tour opener

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
