A Visitors Guide to the Kauai Coffee Plantation
Like millions of people around the world, I start my day with a cup of coffee. For something I encounter on a daily basis, I know surprisingly very little about it. What does it actually take to make a cup of coffee? I know you grind up coffee beans, add a little hot water, and presto you have a mug of instant pick me up. But I know there is so much more that goes into the process. So during our visit to Kauai, I decided to visit Kauai Coffee Plantation to learn more about what it actually takes to make a cup of java.
If you are also curious, here is what you should know before you visit the plantation:
The Largest Coffee Grower in the United States
You probably wouldn’t have guessed it but the tiny island of Kauai contains 3,100 acres of coffee growing land. With over 4 million coffee trees, Kauai Coffee is the largest coffee grower in the US.
A Self Guided Tour
When you arrive at Kauai Coffee Plantation, head around the left side of the building to begin a self-guided tour through coffee bean fields. The path is well marked with informative signs detailing the coffee making process before it circles back around to the gift shop where you started from. The tour starts with how a coffee plant is grown, then moves on to how it is harvested and then dried and roasted.
This is a Coffee Bean
My only experience with coffee beans was crushing them up at the grocery store with one of those self-serve grinder machines. So if you’re like me, you probably wouldn’t recognize a coffee bean being grown before your eyes. Did you know the coffee bean is actually the seed of the coffee plant? The plant grows cherry-sized fruits that turn from green to red when they are ripe. Inside of these fruits are two coffee beans. Occasionally the two beans will have morphed into a single bean called a peaberry. A peaberry produces a sweet flavor used in specialized flavors of coffee.
Free Samples
Who doesn’t love free samples? After completing your self-guided tour head up on the deck for tastings of the entire line of 100% Hawaiian, estate-grown coffees from Kauai Coffee Plantation. There are probably around 20 different flavors to try. I wouldn’t recommend trying them all unless you want to be jittery for the rest of the day. Start with a classic like the Rooster Alarm. Next, try one made with peaberries and see if you can taste the difference. Then get wild with Hawaiian Chocolate Macadamia Nut.
Visit Kauai Coffee Plantation
Even if you don’t drink coffee, a visit to the Kauai Coffee Plantation should make it on your Kauai Itinerary. The plantation is beautiful and learning about the care that goes into growing coffee beans is fascinating. If you are a coffee drinker, there is a feeling of great satisfaction walking through the rows of coffee plants, sipping on a cup of coffee made from the beans you are watching grow. It doesn’t get much fresher than that.
Chad can be summed up by his idea of a perfect day: Waking up early to watch the sunrise over the mountains, warm cup of coffee in hand then grabbing his camera and fly rod, hitting the trail to explore some uncharted territory followed by cold beers and campfire steaks. Chad is often joined on his adventures by his wife, Tori, and their dog, Kona.

Visit Hawai‘i’s Largest Coffee Plantation
PHOTO: GETTY IMAGE
The state’s largest coffee plantation is located on Kaua‘i’s southwest side, about 17 miles from Līhu‘e Airport. A 3,100-acre estate, KAUA‘I COFFEE CO. PLANTATION boasts tours, lines of coffee trees (4 million trees total!) and even a visitor center for the curious coffee drinker.
KAUA‘I COFFEE VISITOR CENTER offers information about coffee growing and its history. While there, you also can explore through the “ WALL-LESS COFFEE MAZE ” that doubles as a walking tour, with signage providing information about the coffee-growing process.
A coffee bar also offers freshly roasted coffee and snacks, and you can sample a variety of the coffees made by Kaua‘i coffee.
As a fun fact, Kaua‘i coffee trees begin to bloom in February or March. By May, the fruit, or coffee cherry, starts to form. The fruit usually ripens by late September, when harvesting begins. The seeds of the fruit, usually two to a cherry, become the coffee bean. Nearly 4,000 coffee beans must be harvested to produce a single pound of coffee. The rich volcanic soil and plentiful mountain rain give Kaua‘i coffee’s java its delightful flavor.
The center is just past KALĀHEO going west toward WAIMEA CANYON . Watch for the sign on the makai (ocean) side of Highway 50. Visit kauaicoffee.com for hours and information.

Kauai Coffee Plantation and Lappert
Lappert’s Hawaii Ice Cream
Isaac Lappert ate more ice cream as a child than any other. His father owned Lappert’s Ice Cream in Sausalito, and his grandfather also operated a shop on Kauai. At the age of five, he helped out in the shop and soon discovered his favorite flavors: cookies and cream, chocolate, and Kauai Pie. He also likes macadamia nuts.
Kauai Coffee Plantation also offers complimentary tastings of their Hawaiian roasts. Visitors can also tour the estate and purchase small-batch roasts. The Kauai Coffee Plantation is a true coffee lover’s paradise, and they make some of the most delicate ice creams on the island. Don’t forget to pick up some locally-grown coffee from the Koloa Mill for dessert.
You’ll also be able to sample their unique date ice cream. The ice cream is made with whole dates, not the date sugar crystals commonly found in other ice creams. Lappert’s is a family-owned business that started in Northern California in 1981 and has now spread across the continental U.S. The company does not franchise, but its U.S.-based store owners uphold the quality standards and flavor.
Kauai Coffee
While on Kauai, you should stop by the coffee plantation . There are free samples of Kauai Coffee at the Visitor Center. If you’d instead not sample the coffee for free, you can also buy some of their fine decaf varieties. If you’d like to learn more about the coffee-making process, Kauai Coffee Plantation is a great stop. The coffee is grown in the island’s southeast region.
The largest coffee plantation in the US is on Kauai, where the Kauai Coffee Company grows over 4 million coffee trees. Visitors can take a self-guided tour of the plantation, which features informative signs about growing, drying, and roasting. Once you’ve learned about the different steps of the coffee-making process, you can purchase Kauai Coffee products at their gift shop. You can also enjoy complimentary tastings of their coffee at the Visitor Center and pick up souvenirs from their cafe.
The plantation is located on the southwest coast of Kauai, making it one of the most popular places to visit in Hawaii. It has over 4 million coffee trees planted on its 3,000-acre property. Those who enjoy coffee can visit the plantation to learn about its history, learn the processes of coffee farming, and sample five varieties of Arabica coffee. Guests can also taste 28 coffee products grown on the plantation.
Kilohana Plantation
The perfect way to learn about the Hawaiian culture is to visit the historic Kilohana Plantation. This 150-acre sugar plantation is home to Hawaiian-style tropical orchards, a rum distillery, and a theatrical luau. A memorable train ride offers a glimpse into Hawaiian history while you visit the manor house, and the tour also includes a Hawaiian luau. Once you arrive, you can take in the island’s rich history and indulge in delicious food.
A visit to the Kilohana Plantation includes the opportunity to sample coffee from the various varieties grown on the property. While at the plantation, you can enjoy the Luau Kalamaku, a show that tells the story of ancient Polynesians’ journey to Hawaii. The performance features Tahitian rhythms, knife dancing, and hula. You’ll also get to sample Hawaiian cuisine and learn about the history of coffee production in Hawaii.
Visitors can also enjoy the Kauai Plantation Railway, a simple project suitable for families with children. The railroad tracks take you through the old plantation village and tropical garden . The railway tracks evoke an atmosphere of King Karakau’s days, and you can imagine yourself riding through the ruins of a time long past. You’ll experience a train ride through the plantation and see over 50 varieties of fruit trees. The train tracks also offer plenty of opportunities to feed friendly farm animals.
Koloa Estate
If you love coffee, you’ll want to visit the Kauai Coffee Plantation Koloman Estate. This place caters to true coffee lovers more than a coffee shop, with a plantation tour and tasting room. The estate, located just off Highway 50, offers a unique look at the coffee-growing process. After your tasting, you can order some of Kauai Coffee’s products online or even take a walking tour through the farm.
While you’re at the estate, don’t forget to stop at the Island Coffee Company to sample their delicious offerings. You can buy souvenirs like insulated mugs, grinders, and press pots. You can also pick up some island pancake mix and a T-shirt, baseball cap, or sweatshirt. This is an excellent stop for the whole family! Once you’ve sampled their fresh, delicious coffee, you’ll be ready to enjoy the island’s legendary hospitality.
Located on Kauai’s south shore, the Kauai Coffee Plantation has a visitors center where you can learn about the history of the plantation and how it’s produced . The center features a mini coffee museum, instructional videos about coffee production, a take-out window, restrooms, and a gift shop. The center also offers free tastings. The company’s coffee is not yet as famous as Kona coffee , but the experience is still worth the trip.
Luau Kalamaku
Visitors to this tropical plantation will see Hula dancers and enjoy classic island cuisine. The plantation will offer local crafts and traditional island foods. Visitors can enjoy a Hula dance performance and purchase some souvenirs. The plantation is open daily from sunrise to sunset. Visitors can feed the farm animals, participate in the imu ceremony, and shop for unique souvenirs. The train ride to the plantation will end with the chance to purchase fresh Kauai coffee. Guests can also enjoy shopping in the plantation store and unique shops.
The Plantation Owner’s Evening experience includes a dinner buffet and Premium Seating at the luau performance. There are children’s activities and luau performances, and the event is subject to changes due to weather and traffic conditions. Gratuity is not included in the price, but it can be included if requested. This restaurant is classified as fine dining. You’ll enjoy fine cuisine in a relaxed atmosphere.
Visitors can visit the Kilohana Plantation to purchase souvenirs. This historic plantation is the largest in America . The tasting room features several flavors of Kauai coffee. The gift shop includes coffee-themed gifts. The tour lasts about two hours. You’ll get to taste the coffee and learn about Kauai’s rich history of agriculture. If you’re in Kauai for the first time, make sure to visit the Kilohana Plantation.

Overall rating
Nothing beats these views! How we wish we could see them always!
We enjoyed the tour overall but wish we had more time and one or two more stops around the Waimea Canyon. The tour takes in a few different spots across Kauai, but the real highlight is the Canyon. So it's a shame to onl ... y get a few different opportunities to stop and take photos. The tour picked us up and dropped us off promptly, and our guide Rosario told us a bit about the island and it's history, which we liked. The lunch provided was better than we expected. If we had the chance again, we would drive to the Waimea Canyon itself to explore it independently. If we had to take a tour again, we would consider this one as we felt overall it was good, if not perfect.
Superb tour!
We thoroughly enjoyed this sightseeing tour, with driver & guide, Kaleo. He was helpful, informative and hilarious! Stories, quips and jokes all day long. We even learned how to pronounce "humuhumunukunukuapua`a"! We saw ... some highlights of the beautiful island of Kaua`i including the spouting horn blow hole and we were lucky enough to get a clear view of the waimea canyon, before the clouds rolled in! We had a tasty lunch at chicken in a barrell and sampled delicious coffee at the Kaua`i coffee plantation. The trail at the state park is very short and the order of the stops is different to that listed on the veltra site, but regardless we would 100% recommend this tour.

Where is the Kauai Pineapple Tour?
The Kauai Sugarloaf Pineapple Tour is located on the Hole in the Mountain Farm about 5 minutes from the highway in the Anahola area of the east side of Kauai.
Before your tour, they will email you very detailed directions on how to get there. It’s not really a place you’ll see along the highway (and GPS won’t always get you there) so you’ll definitely want to have a navigator in the car reading the emailed directions.
Brief Kauai Pineapple History
Pineapple has been associated with Hawaii for decades. I mean, people plop pineapple on any food and call it “Hawaiian.”
Oahu, Maui, and Lana’i are most well-known for their pineapple plantations. But, Kauai also had them.
The Hawaiian Canneries Co. launched in 1913 in Kapaa on the east side of Kauai. The land was perfect for growing pineapple and everything went well until the 1950s.
When Hawaii became a state in 1959, businesses now had to pay taxes and follow fair labor laws. This made it simply too expensive for pineapple plantations to turn a profit.
So, in 1962, the pineapple canneries in Kapaa closed.
However, that doesn’t mean you can’t find pineapple on Kauai. While they aren’t grown commercially on a large scale, you’ll definitely find smaller farms that grow pineapple as well as the popular Kilohana Plantation.
And of course, you can get pineapple at the Hole in the Mountain Farm, home to sugarloaf pineapple.
Sugarloaf Pineapple vs Yellow Pineapple
Before I really get into this Kauai pineapple farm review, I want to highlight the difference between sugarloaf pineapple and standard yellow pineapple.
Sugarloaf pineapple is a white pineapple with a soft core that can be easily eaten. It’s also less acidic than other pineapple and can taste a lot sweeter.
Supposedly, sugarloaf pineapple was first discovered on the island of Lana’i by plantation workers. Since they bruised easily and couldn’t be canned, the plantation owners didn’t want to use them.
But they were too delicious to just throw away. So, plantation workers took them home and started growing them in their own gardens.
What to Know about the Kauai Pineapple Plantation Tour Before You Go:
How to visit the kauai pineapple plantation.
You’ll definitely want to book your Kauai Sugarloaf Tour tickets before you go. Limited tickets are available for each tour, and they fill up quickly.
You do need tickets; you can’t just show up. We did see some people show up thinking they could buy pineapple at the farm. You cannot.
Where to Park
There are plenty of parking spots to the left of the meeting area. And the owners will help show you exactly where to park.
When you arrive, you’ll check in under the green canopy. This is where you’ll pay for your tour and you can grab a bottle of water and/or a big sun umbrella.
There are also restrooms there in case someone in your party needs to go. And they have a table of products you can buy like t-shirts, dehydrated pineapple, etc.
Kauai Sugarloaf Pineapple Tours
This is a 2-hour tour that takes place on a fully-operational pineapple plantation on Kauai. It’s led by the owners of Hole in the Mountain Farm: Jude and Paul Huber.
You’ll learn all about how pineapples grow in Hawaii , what makes Kauai sugarloaf pineapple so special, and even get some hands-on opportunities on this Kauai farm.
Keep scrolling to see the Hawaii pineapple tour highlights!
Food Options
While the only food available at the farm is pineapple, I suggest heading over to Anahola Cafe to grab lunch either before or after your tour. They have a bunch of easy food options like hamburgers, hot dogs, and the best taro burger I’ve ever had.
The Highlights of This Kauai Tour and What You Should Look Out For
The main highlight for our family was getting to pick our own pineapples in the field! Jude showed us exactly how to do it and everyone on the tour got to pick one to bring home.
My kids also really enjoyed planting pineapples in the field. It’s a great way for kids to learn about the pineapple life cycle !
We got to walk around to different sections of the farm to learn about the different stages of pineapple growth. Part of it was seeing the new little plants growing inside the crowns and how to split the crowns to create new pineapple plants.
It was also really cool to see the pineapples growing in the field. This is something most Kauai tourists don’t get to see!
Near the end of the tour, each person was able to go into the field and pick their own pineapple.
Jude showed us exactly which one to pick and the correct way of picking it. We were lucky because we were at the tail end of the pineapple season.
Some of the pineapples were fairly small, so Jude grabbed extras to compensate. But they were the perfect individual size to enjoy!
After we picked our pineapples, Jude sliced up fresh sugarloaf pineapple (not the ones we picked to take home) so we could all taste it.
She even let us try fresh sugarloaf pineapple juice which was AMAZING!
Kauai sugarloaf pineapple is the sweetest pineapple I’ve ever had. And it has a smoother texture than yellow pineapple.
The tour ended with a cup of Pineapple Phrostie, which is just frozen sugarloaf pineapple that is pureed. There’s no added sugar or anything but it’s sweet and delicious! It’s the ultimate dairy free pineapple ice cream!
Hawaii Pineapple Tour Tips for Families
It’s open to all ages.
We saw a family pushing a stroller on the tour with a toddler. There were actually quite a few families on our tour with young kids.
What to Wear
You’ll definitely want to wear closed toe shoes , clothes you can get dirty, a hat, and plenty of sunscreen.
The red dirt does stain clothing, so choose wisely. I had my kids wear clothes that they were starting to grow out of because I knew they would get dirty.
What to Bring
You can bring extra water/drinks . You might also bring snacks for kids as the tour is a full 2 hours (our tour ended up being 2.5 hours).
I’d also suggest bringing fidget toys or something small to keep kids occupied while standing around.
How Much Does it Cost and Where is it Located?
Tours last about two hours and cost $85 per person ($45 for pre-teen children, free for children 4 and under). Reservations are required in advance . You must email them to secure your spot.
It’s located at the Hole in the Mountain Farm in Anahola. It’s a bit complicated to find on your own so thankfully they send out turn-by-turn directions.
Hawaii Pineapple FAQs
For a yellow pineapple, you can look at the color and if the outside is yellow, it’s probably ripe. Do NOT let your pineapple sit on the counter for a week to “ripen” as it won’t riped after it’s been picked.
No, it’s a complete myth that you can pull a leaf from a pineapple crown to see if it’s ripe. This won’t determine ripeness.
You bet! You can plant the crown of a pineapple in a pot and keep it in your home. But, keep in mind that it can take 18 months to 2 years to produce one pineapple.
So, is the Kauai Pineapple Farm Tour Worth It?
It depends. We thought it was really interesting and loved the hands-on experiences! I mean, where else can you pick your own pineapple to take home?
I’d done the Maui Pineapple Tour , which is also very cool but there isn’t an opportunity to plant or pick pineapples.
However, my kids thought the tour was really long and they didn’t like standing around in the sun for 2 hours. We’ve done a lot of Kauai farm tours and this was probably the least geared for kids.
If your family is interested in agriculture, or you want to learn more about the sweetest pineapple in Hawaii, this is a great opportunity!
