REVIEW: Matilda The Musical is a Feast of Magical Moments

Matilda The Musical has returned to Singapore as part of its 2024 international tour! Produced by GWB Entertainment in association with the Royal Shakespeare Company and presented by Base Entertainment Asia, the celebrated stage adaptation of Roald Dahl’s beloved story about an extraordinary and precocious little girl is currently playing at Marina Bay Sands’ Sands Theatre until 7 April.

The multi-award winning musical premiered in 2010 in the UK to immediate acclaim and has been seen by 11 million people in over 90 cities worldwide.  Written by Dennis Kelly, directed by Matthew Warchus and featuring original songs by Tim Minchin, the production is inspiring, humorous and spectacular all at once throughout its 140 minutes run time (including intermission) and is largely faithful to the book. If you have not read Dahl’s masterpiece, Matilda is about a brilliant and gutsy little girl with telekinetic powers who uses her brains and bravery to help others, while getting sweet revenge on a nasty and abusive headmistress.

With a significant portion of the plot set in school, the cast features many child actors, including the very talented Yolani Balfour who set the stage alight as Matilda Wormwood on this Gala Night (Balfour shares the title role with Donna Craig and Myla Williams). Born to ignorant and aloof parents who are blind to her intelligence and even scorn her love for reading and knowledge, Matilda turns to the library for solace. Besides books, which she devours at a ferocious pace, the sympathetic librarian Mrs Phelps (Londiwe Dhlomo-Damini) is the other bright spark in her routine, as the number one fan listening to the incredible stories Matilda invents. While at school, Matilda lends her bravery, brains and strong sense of morality to seek justice for her long-suffering teacher Miss Honey (Gemma Scholes) and classmates, all bullied by the evil headmistress Miss Agatha Trunchbull (James Wolstenholme).

In Matilda The Musical, the dreary classroom and Miss Trunchbull are all greys and browns. In contrast, the sets of the library, Matilda’s fantastical stories and her home are bright and colourful. Her mother, an aspiring dancer (played by Emily Squibb), her flamboyant dance partner (Ryan Anderson) and Matilda’s father, a dishonest car dealer (Matthew Rowland) are over-the-top, petty and slapstick characters that make you laugh out loud. The extravagant displays are a feast for the eyes and Miss Trunchbull is as revolting as can be.  The choreography is breathtaking, as the cast stomp, climb, vault and swing their way to a spirited performance amid swings, desks and chairs, nimble and agile amid the organised chaos even as they break out in chorus. Even the towering Miss Trunchbull, hilariously yet perfectly cast in the very male Wolstenholme (‘supported’ in his role by huge prosthetics on his chest) does an unimaginably graceful somersault in the gym.

The young cast is amazingly nimble as they leap and dance effortlessly among the desks and chairs. Photo © Hanan Assor.

There are also some poignant and contemplative moments in Matilda The Musical though, such as the kids wistfully singing “When I Grow Up” and thinking they will “eat sweets everyday” and “have treats everyday” when we adults know that getting older may not be much better. Every child will find someone who recognises the best in him/her, and Miss Honey is the mentor who immediately knows that Matilda is special, but has struggles and confidence issues of her own. The meek and oppressed Ms Honey finds consolation in simple pleasures like just having a home. Singing the soulful “My House”, she says that “it isn’t much, but it is enough for me.” Meanwhile, Matilda has the drive and guts to know that just because life is not fair, “it doesn’t mean that you just have to grin and bear it”. We in the audience are thus forced to reflect and confront the great conundrum in life–to fight back, or to take adversity on the chin and wear it in acceptance like her teacher? If we choose the latter, nothing will change, as Matilda chimes to remind us.

Ultimately, at least where this production is concerned, it is Matilda’s defiance that will be everyone’s gain.  Matilda The Musical is a powerful story with simple but timeless lessons, suitable for young and old. Whether it is the triumph of good over evil, the power of faith and determination, or simply the joys of a wild imagination and the value of reading in build ing a child’s knowledge, you will find something in this story that will resonate with you. For younger children, it may be a challenge for them to follow the story if they are not familiar with Dahl’s book, as the sets segue between Matilda’s reality and fantasy–parents could take this chance to encourage them to do some reading. But for most of the audience, the sight and sounds of the feisty children ousting their tyrannical headmistress are probably enough to leave you  irresistibly charmed and cheering at the curtain call, like we did.

Matilda The Musical runs Tuesdays to Fridays at 8pm, Saturdays (2pm and 8m) and Sundays (1pm and 6.30pm) at the Sands Theatre, Marina Bay Sands. Tickets are on sale at Marina Bay Sands Ticketing and SISTIC .

‘Matilda The Musical’ to come to China for nationwide tour

Chinese people are huge lovers of music at home and abroad. Even the most niche of music genres from other countries and regions can find fans in China.

The same goes for musicals, as a number of original musicals from the West have established huge fan bases in the country. Ever since Les Misérables made its mainland debut in 2002, the number of Chinese musical fans has reached the millions with one hit musical staged after another.

Next year, these fans will have the opportunity to experience "one of the best British musicals ever" for themselves as the award-winning Matilda The Musical will kick off a tour of 13 Chinese cities in June 2019.

The tour was announced on Wednesday in Beijing by the musical's organizers - the Poly Theater Management Company, Seven Ages and the Royal Shakespeare Company.

"It still thrills me, and I've seen it 200 times," said Andre Ptaszynski, the musical's executive producer, at the event.

"This is a story about strength and courage, about living the fullest life you can. Matilda is a genius. She reads Dostoyevsky and Dickens at the age of 5. She teaches herself Russian at the same time. She is smarter than everyone around her and never watches television. She is full of mischief and fun and kindness."

Long, difficult road

"This is not a children's show, not even a family show. This is a great musical loved by grown-ups who are touched by its honesty, its humor and values," Ptaszynski noted.

Among the millions that have been moved and inspired by the musical is Qian Jiamin, CEO of Seven Ages. Qian noted that she was deeply touched by the show when she saw it in London in 2012 and decided there and then that she would bring it to China no matter what it took.

"She is desperate to bring it to China to your audiences. It seems to be really hard thing to do," Ptaszynski said, recalled that Qian "saw the show again and again to work out how she might do it."

"I believe it must be the best musical of our times. Making this happen though was easier said than done," said Qian, who finally met Ptaszynski two years after seeing the show in London.

"I remember that we met at a place called The Ivy Club, near the Cambridge Theater. A lucky sign for me since my English name is Ivy. However, I didn't expect at the time that we would be working on it for the next five years," she added.

According to Ptaszynski, Qian flew to met with him while the show was on Broadway in New York and also while it was being performed in Sydney, Australia.

"We did lots of budgets and tried to work out ways to bring the show here. But it was very hard. Finally with our producing partner GWB, we worked out how to do what she wanted," he said.

It took Qian almost seven years to finally bring the show to China. Due to the Royal Shakespeare Company's high standards when it comes to quality, they are always very careful when in selecting partners.

"It is understandable. Due to their patience and care, they spent 10 years to produce Matilda The Musical. No wonder it won a record-setting seven Olivier Awards in 2012," Qian noted.

Chinese localization

In Qian's opinion, the introduction of Cats to Japan had a huge impact on the development of the country's musical industry, while in South Korea The Phantom of the Opera caused its musical industry to enter a decade-long golden era. Now, when it comes to China, "If there is any musical that can spark development here, it must be Matilda," she said, going on to announce that a Chinese version of the show will be launched right after the end of the English version's tour. This will mark only the second time the musical has been adapted into a foreign language.

Localization has always been a successful way to maintain the popularity of Western musicals. The Chinese adaptation of Mama Mia!, which debuted in 2011 and is still touring the country, is considered to be one of the best success stories.

Working with Poly Theater Management, Seven Ages has produced Chinese versions of The Sound of Music and Man of La Mancha. According to Qian, Seven Ages will also launch a Chinese version of the French musical Les Choristes in 2019.

"Exchange between culture and entertainment between China and the West is nothing new, but we really look forward to bringing you Matilda The Musical," Ptaszynski emphasized.

Can I choose a specific seat?

Unfortunately, no. Ticketing systems in China vary from venue to venue, and many are not advanced enough to offer specific seat selection. The event promoters and venues that we work with currently have no systems in place that allow third party ticketing agents to access their respective floors plans. However, whenever you buy a ticket from us, you will automatically receive the best available seats within the category you've selected. Sometime the tickets price categories' name won't be matched on the actually physical tickets. But the value will be the same you choose.

How do I pay for my tickets?

We have a couple of payment options available; 1. Online Payment : We now support WeChat and Alipay for online purchases. Simply scan the QR the payment page directs you to. 2. Cash/Card on Delivery : You can also pay our delivery staff directly either in cash, or with a local UnionPay card. Overseas clients can also pay via bank transfer, however, you’ll need to send us an email so we can sort out bank info and e-invoice. If you need a fapiao for your purchase, then please email us the relevant details (company title, tax number and your order number) .

What happens if the show gets cancelled? Will I get my money back?

Yes, SmartTickets always refunds ticket purchases if a show gets cancelled. This guarantee is one of the reasons that people choose to purchase through SmartTickets instead of less reliable sources. Please note, though, that we only refund the face value of the tickets.

I live outside Shanghai, how can I get my tickets?

We can deliver the tickets to you through Shunfeng Express if you are located outside Shanghai. For this option, purchase the tickets online using Alipay or WeChat. Please fill in the booking information with your address in Chinese to avoid confusion in the delivery process. Please note: We can only accept cash for deliveries within certain Shanghai area (for details, see the "cash on delivery" area map). Overseas customers may also choose the bank transfer option by emailing us. We will then send you an invoice with the bank transfer info after you’ve placed the order. However, the delivery address must be in Shanghai , for example, to a hotel. For more details, please contact us .

Oops! I missed the online payment QR code the first time!

If you missed your payment QR code, you can find it again on the Order Status page. Enter your booking code and email address, then click the big green "Pending Payment" button. Please note: online payment orders will automatically be canceled if the payment is not completed within 30 mins.

Can I pay online with a credit card?

Unfortunately, no. We've been working to implement an online payment system, which should be available soon! The nature of risk management and licensing issues with online payments made within China makes it a particularly delicate process.

If I lose my ticket, can I get a replacement?

Unfortunately, all physical tickets are not replaceable. The concert venues have fixed seat numbers, and to avoid conflicts caused by duplicate tickets with the same seats, ticketing agencies and promoters are not permitted to print tickets twice. If you've lost your e-ticket, you can login to the order status page and resend the e-ticket to your email.

Can Cannes Save ‘Megalopolis’? Francis Ford Coppola Prepares to Unveil His $120 Million Epic as Controversy Builds

Megalopolis

In a press conference at Cannes, Coppola was blunt: “There were too many of us. We had access to too much money, too much equipment, and, little by little, we went insane.”

Popular on Variety

But will Cannes turn out to be a redemption tour for Coppola, who has been able to defy the skeptics in the past, or is “Megalopolis” going to be a late-career disaster for an artist who has also produced his share of costly duds along with his masterpieces?

Initially, Coppola was determined to sell the film himself and forgo working with a sales agent. And after recently firing CAA, he also has been working without a personal agent, sources say. But following the disappointing screening that drew most of the major studio heads, a group that typically doesn’t acquire big-budget movies, Coppola began working with international sales outfit Goodfellas. Ahead of the festival and on the ground in Cannes, Goodfellas has sold the film in multiple foreign territories, including France. Notably, these individual territories do not have rights to paid video-on-demand or streaming options for “Megalopolis,” perhaps by design to lure a big streaming service who could prop the movie up for global subscribers after a theatrical rollout.

While the Guardian story is an unwelcome headache for Coppola and Goodfellas, some buyers feel that it won’t impede its ability to ultimately find a U.S. distributor.

“In this case, my gut feeling is ‘no.’ I’m sure there was old-fashioned, out-of-step behavior, not to be condoned. However, in this context, the movie will stand — or fall — on its own merit,” said one buyer who is keeping an open mind heading into Thursday’s Cannes debut.

Sources say Coppola is looking for a distributor that will release “Megalopolis” in the fourth quarter of 2024, where it will mount an awards-season campaign. A24 or another awards-savvy distributor are seen as ideal fits. But some potential indie outfits have seen the film and don’t feel like there’s much upside — they don’t believe the movie has much Oscars potential beyond technical categories and they fear that Coppola will be an overly demanding partner. If the price for domestic rights drops, however, or Coppola, who put up his own money to make the film, is more interested in a domestic distributor for hire, then “Megalopolis” may become more attractive.

Another buyer also said the negative press following the screening for studio heads coupled with the Guardian piece may even help “Megalopolis” find a home.

“The way that it’s been set up is they had a bozo screening for all the people who really don’t buy movies. They wouldn’t know a Bertolucci movie if it hit them in the butt,” said that buyer. “Now that they’re here, it’s an underdog movie. And everyone is kind of pulling for it.”

Cannes, with its audience of cinephiles, may provide a warmer reception for “Megalopolis” than the one that greeted it at the earlier industry screening. However, Coppola faces another test on Friday at a Cannes press conference, where he will almost certainly be grilled about the Guardian story. How he responds could affect the film’s fate with U.S. distributors.
