With a dash of humor and some Hitchcock-esque directorial flourishes, the film’s scenario could have been fun. But the production takes the lazy approach and leaves the viewer palpably aware of it.

But even with its good-looking cast and locations, “The Tourist” is too shallow, too flat, and ultimately forgettable.

The Tourist is not an absolute debacle, and was able to entertain a tolerant audience. [Full review in Spanish]

The action scenes are sluggish when they should punch, the leads seem indifferent when we’re to believe they’re falling in love, and there’s a sense of burden as the plot twists and turns.

The Tourist had all the elements in place to truly be a thing of beauty. Which makes it such a shame the script is so predictable and ugly.

The chemistry is nonexistent, the supporting roles don't come any more generic, and too many laughable occasions arise from the characters laboring dramatically to be intense.

Jolie, while certainly able to pull off the tall and lanky look, seems to be looking around for a starving child to tend to or adopt.

You have beautiful people doing cool stuff in beautiful environments. If you're into that sort of thing, then this movie is for you.

Despite the star power, the film lacks fireworks. It proves to be a case of big star power with low wattage.

The dreadful dialogues and plot-holes do not help.

Startling video captured the moment a wild bull attacked a tourist on a Mexican beach after she feeds the massive beast instead of heeding horrified onlookers’ advice to move out of the way.

The female tourist, who was not identified, was face to face with the bull as she stood under her tent at Baja California Sur in Cabo on Saturday, according to  the Sudcaliforniano .

Shockingly, the oblivious tourist did not try to flee from the aggressive beast but instead began feeding it from a bowl while attempting to gather her things. 

The tourist, wearing a tan hat and black sundress, eventually snatched her belongings from the four-legged, horned animal.

However, after she fed the creature, it began to follow her. 

She drops her things and momentarily steps back, but as the bull sticks its nose in her bag, she again gets dangerously close to it, yanking the bag away from the massive creature.

“Lady, you are really playing with it right now. Please don’t do that,” a male bystander pleads with her in English. 

The woman pushed the bull’s head away from her bag as the bystander continued urging her to “please” move away. 

“You’re not doing us any favors,” the man yelled. 

Seconds later, the bull begins to attack, shoving its horns in her direction and causing her to drop her bags and step back. 

Instead of fleeing from the potentially deadly situation, she tries to grab one of the bags. 

The bull then takes its horns and shoves them directly into her — plowing her body into the sand while other beachgoers hiding behind vehicles watch in horror, unable to intervene. 

She gets up, but the bull seemingly strikes her in the face with one of its horns, causing her to fall. 

The tourist then is repeatedly attacked and rolled by the massive bull’s horns, kicking up sand as she’s violently tossed around.

“We tried to f–king tell you,” the bystander added.

Fortunately, a brave woman carrying a bucket of water runs out from behind a truck and throws water at the bull, causing it to run away from the tourist, who scrambles to safety.

Los Cabos Federal Maritime-Terrestrial Zone operational coordinator Víctor Manuel Torres García told the Sudcaliforniano that federal employees do not regularly patrol the beach where the attack happened, so no report was made.

He added that the condition and identity of the tourist gored by the bull are unknown. 

Torres García did explain that it’s normal for livestock to be seen roaming the coastline given that many ranchers are located near the beaches — but warned beachgoers to remain cautious when they’re around.

Anthony Mackie and Jamie Dornan are going on a wild ride with Apple .

The tech giant and streamer has landed 12 12 12 , a scripted thriller described as a “contemporary international heist” series. The streamer is nearing a formal series greenlight for the project that will reunite stars Mackie and Dornan after the 2019 feature Synchronic .

Dudi Appleton and Jim Keeble ( Silent Witness, Wild Bill ) created and wrote the series. The duo will exec produce alongside Kari Skogland ( Falcon and the Winter Soldier ), who will direct the pilot.

The series is a co-production between Anonymous Content and Skydance Television. Mackie, Dornan and Jason Spire will exec produce. Skydance TV’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Matt Thunell will oversee for Skydance and Anonymous.

12 12 12 marks Apple’s latest TV collaboration with Skydance, following Foundation , The Big Door Prize , an upcoming comedy starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson and sci-fi drama Neuromancer .

Mackie is known for his work in the Marvel universe and previously teamed with Skogland in the Disney+ series Falcon and the Winter Soldier . He also stars in the Peacock scripted drama Twisted Metal. Dornan, for his part, counts The Tourist and Belfast among his credits.

'Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes' spoilers! Here's what the ending really means

Spoiler alert! We're discussing important plot points and the ending of “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes”  ( in theaters now ), so swing to another treetop if you haven’t seen it yet.

The original "Planet of the Apes" movie rocked audiences in 1968 with its combination of astounding makeup and shocking ending. Astronaut George Taylor (Charlton Heston), free of his ape tormentors and on a horseback trek along a beach, comes across the vestiges of the Statue of Liberty.

Thinking he had landed on a distant planet, Taylor suddenly is confronted with the grim reality that he's actually journeyed to a future Earth decimated by warmongering humans. "You maniacs!" he screams. "You blew it up!"

After eight follow-up films − including a recent reboot trilogy that wrapped in 2017 − comes "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes," with final scenes that seem poised to launch a new series.

Set generations after the death of Caesar, the simian leader in the rebooted trilogy, "Kingdom" features a brave but naive ape, Noa (Owen Teague), who befriends an intrepid human, Mae (Freya Allan). Their intertwined journeys culminate in an intriguing ending about which the actors and director Wes Ball offer cryptic comments.

What happens in the ending of 'Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes'?

Noa lives in the blissful world of the Eagle Clan of chimps, who have made their home in overgrown utility pole towers. But that bliss comes to an end when his camp is overrun by aggressive apes from a nearby valley who like to hunt humans − who are now feral, nonverbal beasts − for sport.

In one such invasion, the apes capture both Noa and Mae, who we later learn has retained the ability to speak. The two of them are brought to a chimpanzee labor camp, where they learn to trust each other. Mae reveals that a cave the evil apes are trying to break into contains important technology that can help her reconnect with other sentient humans.

The duo succeeds in their mission, allowing Noa to rebuild his clan and Mae to deliver a critical computer cartridge to a group of humans who live in a bunker filled with satellite technology. In the final scene of the movie, Mae is with these scientists, all clearly survivors of the human-dominated Earth, who reboot radio telescopes and make voice contact with other humans. Noa meanwhile is shown taking his close friend Anaya to an abandoned telescope and she peers through the lens. What does Anaya see in space?

The screen suddenly fades to black.

Is the planet Noa and Anaya are looking at through the telescope Earth?

It's tempting to think that the twist here is that the apes no longer live on Earth and that the humans on this planet are using a radio telescope to connect with people back on our blue marble.

But no, the action takes place on Earth. The giveaways are found not just in the various overgrown buildings and streets seen in the film, but in the specificity of one shot that features the remnants of the parabolic arches that define the center of Los Angeles International Airport.

"Imagine that, if we weren't told (as actors) that we are all actually on Mars," Allan says with a laugh. "But no, my character has maps of towns." Addes Teague: "We're all in LA."

So what planet are the chimps looking at through the telescope at the end of 'Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes'?

Earlier in the movie, Noa comes across a huge abandoned telescope and peers through its small eyepiece and is startled by what he sees. But we don't know what it is. At the end of the movie, he feels compelled to bring his friend to see for herself.

The decision to fade to black instead of revealing what the two saw was an easy one for Ball. "I figured there is nothing I could show you that would be stronger than what the audience's imagination would conjure up," he says. "Sure, it might turn some people off, but some people will like it. I have ideas of what they're looking at."

Mars, maybe? Ball laughs. "Right, they're looking at (SpaceX founder) Elon Musk flying around on his Falcon 9 rocket," he says. "But I'll just say this. Space obviously is a key idea in all of these movies. So, maybe it's them looking to the future?"

A radical idea for the Bears’ stadium plans

Instead of using it for a new stadium complex, how about we give that lakefront land to citizens to enjoy.

It was fascinating to hear Bears President/CEO Kevin Warren and Mayor Brandon Johnson announce recently that they had plans for a new Bears stadium on the lakefront.

It was weird because, well, weren’t the Bears going to build their new stadium in Arlington Heights, where they had purchased the land on which the now-demolished Arlington International Racecourse stood?

‘‘We are the largest landowner in Arlington Heights right now,’’ Warren said.

But taxes are too high there, the Bears said. Can’t build.

So other suburbs got interested. Naperville , Waukegan , Aurora and Country Club Hills joined the welcoming conga line. Did we hear Rockford — 90 miles from Soldier Field — floated as a stadium possibility? Yes, we did.

Then, almost out of nowhere, came this multibillion dollar plan for a sprawling domed stadium where the parking lot south of Soldier Field is. The stadium, as designed, would be immense, eight stories taller than Soldier Field. Think anybody would notice?

We won’t get into how much this would cost Chicagoans . We’ll disregard all the blather about hotel and tourist taxes paying for it and new bonds being issued and those marvelous things called TIFs helping out.

The very definition of tax increment financing — ‘‘the joint investment in the development or redevelopment of an area, with the intent that any short-term gains be reinvested and leveraged so that all taxing bodies will receive larger financial gains in the future’’ — sounds like snake oil of the strongest kind.

Yet Mayor Johnson says the new stadium idea is great. And Warren does, too, of course. Conveniently, Warren seems to have made his best new buddy since scooting over from the Big Ten in January 2023 — that being the mayor of a city always struggling to pay its bills.

• No love for new Bears stadium from Illinois’ top Democrats

But Warren’s declaration was full of defiant good cheer.

‘‘The plan will be to put a shovel in the ground on the lakefront,’’ he said.

Let’s get beyond the partial public financing of a gigantic building for a private company (remember, we don’t own the Bears; the McCaskeys do) and move to an equally, if not more, important matter. That is the lakefront, the greatest gift ever bestowed upon Chicago.

There is nothing like Chicago’s glorious access to Lake Michigan, which, along with the other Great Lakes, holds 90% of America’s fresh surface water. You think that’s precious? When you notice that a liter of bottled water costs more than a liter of gasoline, it hits you.

We can go back to two of the most impressive events in Chicago’s history, the Great Fire of 1871 and Daniel Burnham and Edward H. Bennett’s 1909 ‘‘Plan of Chicago.’’ The first gave us the best urban architecture in the United States. The second told us the lakefront ‘‘should be treated as park space to the greatest possible extent,’’ then declared: ‘‘The Lake front by right belongs to the people.’’

That’s us. Not the Bears. Not the mayor. The people. The citizens.

And now is a perfect time for citizens to think bigger than a mere sports stadium — a structure that, by the way, could be built in any of numerous spots in Chicago — and take up the city spirit of Burnham’s famed dictum, ‘‘Make no little plans. ... Think big.’’

• Bears have designs on the lakefront, as Mayor Johnson plays the wrong position of cheerleader-in-chief

We should make the lakefront even better than it now is. Make it spectacular.

Back in 1870, plans for Lake Shore Drive (now DuSable Lake Shore Drive) were begun. In time, the road effectively cut off much of residential Chicago from the beaches, water and surrounding nature. Sure, you can get to Lake Michigan through various passages, but crossing DuSable Lake Shore Drive itself is impossible. Unless running across eight lanes of divided highway traffic works for you.

Imagine Chicago connected to the lakefront for almost all of its 26 miles. Imagine DuSable Lake Shore Drive lowered underground or completely torn up. Imagine it gone. It is noisy and filthy and acts like a moat filled with crocodiles for a huge stretch of Chicago’s eastern boundary.

Sure, it’s a semicrazy idea. But it has been floated before by architects with Burnham’s vision. Such a move would change Chicago into a city on the lake, not by the lake. The grass, trees, parks and public spaces that could result would change our city for all time. There would be nothing like us anywhere.

Or we can default and just build another stadium by the lake and watch the games that happen there. That’s easy. That’s small.

Commentary: Mass shootings and gun violence in U.S. could damage 2026 World Cup bottom line

The World Cup is coming to the U.S. in a little more than three years. How much of the world will come to watch it, however, remains an open question.

That’s because the unchecked rise in mass shootings in this country has led numerous governments — most of them close allies — to warn their citizens about traveling to the U.S. Not just for the World Cup, but for any reason.

Canada, which will join the U.S. and Mexico in playing host to the tournament, the largest in history with 48 teams and 104 matches, advises those traveling to the U.S. to “familiarize yourself with how to respond to an active shooter situation.” The United Kingdom and Japan have issued similar warnings.

New Zealand has told its people that the U.S. has “domestic-based extremists” while the German government says “it is easy to obtain guns” in the U.S., which has led to “occasional killing sprees.”

And those are our friends.

Meanwhile, crime-ridden Venezuela — not a friend — has recommended its citizens avoid travel to the U.S. because of the “proliferation of acts of violence and indiscriminate hate crimes.”

Even Amnesty International, the human rights watchdog best known for standing up to despots and criminal regimes, has issued warnings about the dangers of traveling to the U.S. That’s not exactly the kind of environment that’s likely to prove welcoming for soccer fans — or anyone else.

“It’s fair to say that is one of the threats to the tourism industry that we can’t market our way out of,” Stephen Ekstrom, chief strategist of the Florida-based Tourism Academy, said of gun violence.

But, Ekstrom added, the World Cup and other major international events such as the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics , could help recalcitrant policymakers understand the importance of addressing the issue.

“The biggest change in perspective comes from recognizing that it’s an economic issue as much as it is a public health, safety, politics issue,” he said. “It’s hitting the bottom line. And we found with other topics that were once seen as political — the environment, sustainability — once it made sense economically to take action, we started to see change.”

To date, political leaders have proven unable — or unwilling — to take meaningful action despite multiple polls showing a growing majority of Americans favor meaningful gun-control legislation. There were 10 mass shootings, resulting in eight deaths and 39 injuries, during the Mother’s Day weekend and another Monday in New Mexico that killed three people. The number of gun-related events involving four or more victims is 267 this year. The Gun Violence Archive says the U.S. is on pace for 60 mass killings — events involving four or more fatalities — in 2023, 24 more than the record, set in 2022.

That’s a mass killing every six days. And they’ve happened at shopping malls, in schools, at parties and in nightclubs from the Deep South to the Pacific Northwest, from the Eastern seaboard to the Southwestern deserts.

During the last five weeks, people have been shot for opening the wrong car door, knocking on the wrong house door and playing hide-and-seek in the wrong yard. In a community just outside Houston, a 2026 World Cup city, a family asked a neighbor to stop shooting his gun in the front yard because it was keeping their baby awake. The man is accused of responding by shooting and killing five people.

Notably, each of the nine states that will stage World Cup games in 2026 has had multiple mass shootings this year. AT&T Stadium outside Dallas, the likely site of the final, is just 41 miles from Allen, Texas, where authorities said a gunman with an AR-15 killed eight and wounded seven at an outlet mall this month. That was three days after another gunman, according to authorities, shot five people at a medical facility three miles from Atlanta’s Mercedes Benz Stadium, another World Cup venue.

Of the seven states with the most mass shootings this year — more than 800 combined — six will be World Cup markets in 2026. Contrast that with New Zealand/Australia, co-hosts of this summer’s Women’s World Cup , which has seen 14 mass shootings combined since 1990.

The U.S. averages that many every eight days.

But it’s the randomness of the shootings in a country with more guns than people that is likely most unsettling to visitors. If people who have lived here their whole lives can’t avoid the bullets, what chance does a tourist have?

No mass shootings have taken place during events at the 11 U.S. World Cup venues, but fans will spend very little of their time in the stadiums. Instead, they will be at restaurants, in parks, on subways and at shopping centers — all frequent sites of shootings.

Still, Alan Rothenberg, who organized the 1994 World Cup in the U.S., the best-attended and most successful in history, believes gun violence will have only a marginal effect on the 2026 tournament.

“While gun violence is horrible and the lack of action by Congress to enact meaningful gun control is inexcusable, it will have minimal impact, if any, on international travel to the United States for the 2026 World Cup,” said Rothenberg, chairman of the sports marketing agency Playfly Premier Partnerships and an advisor to several 2026 host cities. “In 1994, it was feared that gang violence in Los Angeles was going to limit World Cup attendance. It did not.”

A much larger potential inhibition, Rothenberg said, is the lengthy delays in issuing visas to foreign travelers. A 2018 survey by Skift, a travel agency news website, backs that up, finding that while 7% of respondents were reconsidering travel from foreign destinations to the U.S., most said gun violence wouldn’t cause them to alter plans.

The pace of mass shootings has doubled since that report was published.

But even a 7% decline in visitors could represent a major financial hit. An early estimate pushed by U.S. Soccer before the tournament expanded to 104 games said the aggregate economic impact of hosting the 2026 World Cup in North America could reach as much as $5 billion, including the support of roughly 40,000 jobs. A 7% reduction in tourism could cost host cities as much as $350 million.

Sadly, Ekstrom believes framing the issue that way might be the best way to force action on gun control and the 2026 World Cup has the potential to be a catalyst. If the number of lives lost can’t bring about change, maybe lost dollars can.

“Destination marketing organizations, many of them are entrenched with local politics. So they can’t have that conversation about politics,” he said. “But it’s economics. We can talk about lost business, about lost business potential. If the U.S. is losing market share because of this issue, that’s a big deal.

“Absolutely it has an effect on the economics of travel and tourism.”
