UPDATE 03.08.23: Verified Fan registration has been extended to Sunday, March 19 at 7PM PT/9PM CT/10PM ET. The Verified Fan Onsale will take place on Wednesday, March 22 at 3PM local venue time.

New shows announced in north america.

TWICE has announced TWICE 5TH WORLD TOUR ‘READY TO BE’ and is leveraging Ticketmaster’s Verified Fan technology to ensure more tickets get into the hands of fans.

We expect heavy demand for these shows, so getting your Ticketmaster account verified through Verified Fan will be critical to increasing your chances of getting tickets.

Verified Fan helps artists get more of their tickets into the hands of fans who want to go to the show, not buyers looking to resell them. When an artist chooses to use Verified Fan, we use a registration system to help filter out buyers looking to resell tickets for profit. And while it doesn’t guarantee that all Verified Fans will get tickets, it does significantly block bots and professional resellers from competing against fans for tickets during the sale. Access to the Verified Fan sale does not guarantee tickets. Tickets will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Read on for information about how to secure your tickets for the Verified Fan Onsale.

Key Dates to Know

 • Registration Closes: Sunday, March 19 at 7PM PT / 9PM CT / 10PM ET

How to Register for the Verified Fan Onsale

Note: The Tour Organizers will be making 100% of tickets for TWICE 5TH WORLD TOUR ‘READY TO BE’ available for purchase during the Verified Fan Onsale. Registering for the Verified Fan Onsale is your best chance at securing tickets.

If all tickets are purchased during the Verified Fan Onsale, there will not be a General Onsale.

Verified Fan Onsale

Here’s how the Verified Fan process works:

Step 1: Registration

To register for Verified Fan

 • Go to Ticketmaster’s Verified Fan Registration page here .
 • Sign in using your Ticketmaster account; if you don’t have one, you can create one when you register. Be sure to register with the Ticketmaster account you wish to use on the day of the onsale.
 • Tell us what show(s) you’re interested in and submit your registration by 7PM PT / 9PM CT / 10PM ET on Sunday, March 19 to be considered.

From there, we’ll send you an email to confirm your registration was successful and provide details about what to expect next.

Step 2: Verification Next, Ticketmaster vets your request by confirming it belongs to an individual – not a bot – and that it hasn’t been tied to irregular behaviors that could be a sign of a professional seller attempting to access the sale for purposes of reselling tickets.

Step 3: Access Code or Waitlist When demand exceeds availability, a lottery-style process will determine which registered Verified Fans will receive a unique access code and which are put on the waitlist. You’ll receive an email the morning of the Verified Fan Onsale (once announced) letting you know which group you’re in.

 • Access Code: If you receive an access code, it will be sent via text message. It is unique to your account, and will not work if anyone else enters it – do not try to sell or trade your code.
 • Waitlist: If tickets remain, we may text you an access code to join the ticket sale. The lottery-style process will be used to determine who gets off the waitlist.

Access to the Verified Fan Onsale does not guarantee tickets. Tickets will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. So if you get a code, be sure to join the sale promptly for the best chance to get tickets.

Other important notes:

The Verified Fan Onsale date and time will be announced at a later date. When the onsale day comes, the Waiting Room will open 30 minutes before the sale begins. You may only join the Waiting Room using the same Ticketmaster account that you registered with.

When the sale begins, fans in the Waiting Room will be assigned a spot in line. When it is your turn, you must enter your access code exactly as it appears to access tickets.

Important Things to Know

Only fans who have been verified and receive an access code will have the opportunity to purchase tickets via the Verified Fan onsale.

Receiving an access code means that you’ll have the opportunity to buy tickets; however, the ability to purchase tickets is determined by supply and demand, and is not guaranteed. Tickets are available on a first come, first served basis.

Ticket Limits

 • Fans invited to the Verified Fan Onsale may purchase a maximum of four (4) tickets per access code. Note that while you may purchase tickets for multiple shows using the same access code (i.e. 2 tickets for Show 1 and 2 tickets for Show 2), you cannot exceed four (4) tickets in total across the run of events.

Ticket Delivery

 • 100% of tickets will be delivered as SafeTix mobile tickets. To learn more about SafeTix click here .
 • Fans may easily transfer tickets between Ticketmaster accounts.
 • However, to help keep more tickets in the hands of fans, ticket purchases will not be available to view or transfer to friends and family from your Ticketmaster account until a date to be determined after the onsale.

Learn more about sending tickets to friends and family using Ticketmaster Ticket Transfer .

Shopping Tips

What device should i use to purchase tickets, can i sign in to the same ticketmaster account on multiple devices to shop, how many tabs can i have open at once.

You may only use multiple tabs on the same device when shopping for more than one show. As a reminder:

 • If you’d like to shop for tickets to multiple shows, you will need to join the Waiting Room for each one.
 • Please only join the Waiting Room once and only use one tab per show to reduce any delays.
 • Once you join the Waiting Room, do not close your page.

Is it true only one device is allowed per WiFi network and others will be blocked?

Can a group of us share the same wifi at someone's house/school/etc, can i use public or shared wifi, can we use the same credit card across two accounts for tickets, can i give or share my verified fan access code with friends or family, why do i see tickets available to purchase on another site before the verified fan sale has even happened, frequently asked questions, when is the verified fan registration period, can i register more than once to increase my chances of being verified, if i edit my registration more than once, will i be disqualified, are international fans able to register for verified fan, will my registration for verified fan work on purchases for twice shows outside of the us, i signed up for the verified fan onsale using my name, but i will be using someone else’s credit card since i do not have one. will that be an issue if my ticketmaster account name does not match the name of the card, i received a registration confirmation email, does that mean i will get tickets, when will i receive an email letting me know if i'll receive a unique access code or be placed on the waitlist.

Reminder: Access to the Verified Fan Onsale does not guarantee tickets. Tickets will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. So if you get a code, be sure to join the sale promptly at the time stated in your email for the best chance to get tickets. Please be aware that onsale start times will differ depending on the show you registered for, so make sure you make a note of the local time stated in your email.

When submitting my registration I received a six-digit authentication code from Ticketmaster. Can I use this code to purchase tickets during the Verified Fan sales?

Does registering mean i get a verified fan access code, does getting an access code mean i will get tickets, when is the onsale being held, whose id do i bring if i buy tickets on my ticketmaster account, but use my parent/guardian credit card to purchase a vip package.

TWICE

K-pop group TWICE announced the first five North American dates of their 2022 world tour over the weekend. The shows were unveiled in a poster with the details of the upcoming outing, which reveals that the swing will include stops in Los Angeles at the Forum on Feb. 16, the arena in Oakland on Feb. 18, as well as shows in Dallas (Dickies Arena, Feb. 22), Atlanta (State Farm Arena, Feb. 24) and New York (UBS Arena, Feb. 26).

See latest videos, charts and news

The poster for the group’s fourth tour promises that more dates will be announced in the future. The tour was teased at the end of the recent prom-themed video for the English-language single “The Feels,” which featured an image of the poster with some key dates. Among the spotlight upcoming events are their sixth anniversary week — which took place last month — as well as a tease for their third album, due this month, and the upcoming tour.

Fans Choose TWICE's 'Formula of Love: O + T = <3' as This Week's Favorite New Music

The tour will kick off with three shows in Seoul, South Korea on Dec. 24, 25 and 26 at the Olympic Park KSPO Dome.

The group’s latest album, Formula of Love: O + T = <3 , topped last week’s new music poll. Fans voted in a poll published Friday (Nov. 12) on Billboard , choosing the K-pop girl group’s third album as their favorite new music release of the past week. Formula of Love: O + T = <3 brought in nearly 59% of the vote, beating out new music by Taylor Swift ( Red (Taylor’s Version) ), Silk Sonic ( An Evening With Silk Sonic ), Beyonce , (“Be Alive”), Rosalía featuring The Weeknd (“La Fama”), and others.

The new full-length features TWICE’s No. 10-charting Global Excl. U.S. single “The Feels,” the act’s first effort entirely in English. The set also features new track “Scientist,” which sees the nine-piece telling their lovers that there’s no need for special equations or chemicals when it comes to true romance.

How to Get Tickets to TWICE’s ‘Ready to Be (Once More)’ Show in Las Vegas

By Tim Chan

If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, Rolling Stone may receive an affiliate commission.

TWICE are getting ready to return to the U.S. for an encore presentation of their “Ready to Be” tour. The K-pop girl group will be performing a one-night-only show on March 16 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, dubbed the “Ready to Be Once More” concert.

The Las Vegas date follows TWICE’s Latin America leg in February 2024 with four shows across Mexico and Brazil.

“ONCE! We are so grateful to see so many of you on tour this year,” shared TWICE. “It’s been a huge honor to play for you all on our biggest tour yet. Let’s celebrate TWICE 5TH WORLD TOUR READY TO BE once more together and make this a night we will never forget.”

Tickets for the TWICE 5th World Tour “Ready to Be” Once More performance will go on sale this Friday, December 15th at 6 p.m. ET / 3 p.m. PT at Ticketmaster.com.

Want to get tickets to see TWICE in concert? Here’s what you need to know.

How to Get TWICE Tickets Online

Like Taylor Swift and Beyonce before them, TWICE is using Ticketmaster as the official ticketing site for the “Ready to Be” tour.

Tickets to the TWICE show in Las Vegas go on sale on December 15 at 6 p.m. ET. This is a simultaneous public on sale, as well as a sale for VIP tickets and official platinum packages.

Note: there will not be a separate pre-sale for ONCE (a.k.a the TWICE fandom) or any fan club members.

Do You Need Verified Fan for TWICE Tickets on Ticketmaster?

Unlike their 2023 tour dates, you don’t need any special promo code or Verified Fan code to buy TWICE Las Vegas tickets online. But for faster check out, we do recommend registering for a Ticketmaster.com account ahead of time.

Registering also doesn’t guarantee tickets — you’ll want to log into Ticketmaster.com as soon as the TWICE tickets become available, and seats will go on a first-come, first-served basis.

If TWICE tickets are sold out on Ticketmaster, we recommend a site like Vivid Seats , which will likely have a ton of TWICE tickets available at different price points. Bonus: use promo code RS2023 for $20 off at VividSeats.com .

Live reviews

Twice is the best girl group out there.

I went to many concerts, and all of those were great, but never like Twice’s.

They have something different. They don’t just walk around and yell to “”hype”” the crowd, they dance and sing like there’s no tomorrow and they never lack in anything. Everyonce was extremely nice and sweet and we all gave ourselves the space we needed. Everything was well organized and the girls looked really happy.

That’s the kind of concert everyone should attend.

TWICE "FANCY" M/V

Hints and tips for improving your chances of getting TWICE tickets

Make sure you have a my ticketmaster account.

Get the basics covered before tickets go on sale by logging in and checking your Ticketmaster account ahead of time. If you don’t have a Ticketmaster Account then make sure you sign up in advance – Ticketmaster.com.au .

Sign into your My Ticketmaster account ahead of time

Remember to triple check your passwords, account information, and billing information are all filled in correctly in advance, that way you’re not facing any last-minute account updates when trying to process your order.

Keep your options open with ‘Best Available’

Save time by searching “Best Available,” which scans all sections fast – it’s quicker than searching sections one at a time.

Keep an eye on the clock

There will be a time limit applied to all transactions as you are progressed through the ticket purchasing stages. Remember to keep an eye on the timer on your screen and move through the processing pages as quickly as possible (this is even easier when you’ve completed the account set-up stage we mentioned above).

Don’t refresh your screen

Stick to one window while you’re in the Waiting Room and when you’re being pushed through the Smart Queue and always resist the urge to refresh.

Hitting the refresh button means you’ll lose your place in the queue and, as frustrating as it can get, patience is the only way to win this game. Ticketmaster is equipped with sophisticated systems that are designed to manage and process ticket purchases as quickly as possible. The queuing system that appears on your screen will place you at the front of the line as soon as possible.

Remember: there are a lot of fans

We’re expecting this to be a very popular event. When a popular event goes on sale there are hundreds, and sometimes thousands, of customers all attempting to purchase tickets at the same time. Tickets are sold as long as seats are available, and when an act is this popular, sometimes they go very quickly.

Be sure to follow the above tips to ensure you have the best chance of snapping up some tickets.

TWICE Concept Photo For Their 'Formula of Love: O+T=<3' Album

TWICE Just Announced A World Tour And ONCE Are Freaking Out

I'm mapping out my plan ASAP.

ONCE, TWICE is coming to a city near you! On Monday, Nov. 15, the group announced their fourth world tour, titled III , will be kicking off really soon. They unveiled eight concert dates so far but promised there are more to come. If you’re planning on buying tickets, check out all the details surrounding TWICE’s 2022 world tour below.

TWICE’s III will mark the group’s first tour since their 2019 Twicelights world tour, which saw the girls perform all across Asia and North America in cities like Seoul, Bangkok, Mexico City, Newark, and more. Because of lockdown, TWICE had to cancel their last four performances in Seoul and Tokyo, which were supposed to happen in March and April 2020. To give fans a proper Twicelights finale, the group held their first virtual concert, titled Twice: World in a Day , that August.

On Oct. 1, TWICE teased they had another tour in the works. At the end of their “The Feels” music video , they shared a poster that read, “2021 NOV — 3RD FULL ALBUM AND 4TH TOUR IS COMING.”

After TWICE dropped their third full-length album, Formula of Love: O+T=<3 , along with their latest single “ Scientist ,” on Nov. 12, ONCE had a feeling they would be officially announcing their tour soon. Finally, on Nov. 15, it happened. “TWICE 4TH WORLD TOUR Ⅲ ,” the group tweeted, alongside a tour poster featuring Jihyo, Nayeon, Jeongyeon, Momo, Sana, Mina, Dahyun, Chaeyoung, and Tzuyu in gorgeous dresses and blazers.

Here’s how fans reacted to hearing TWICE is going on tour again:

When is TWICE’s 2022 III World Tour?

TWICE’s first three concert dates will be on Dec. 24, 25, and 26 in Seoul at the Olympic Park KSPO Dome. The girls will then take a short break before heading to the United States in 2022. They’ll first perform in Los Angeles at The Forum on Feb. 16. Then, they’ll hit the stage at the Oakland Arena on Feb. 18 before performing in Dallas at the Dickies Arena on Feb. 22. On Feb. 24, they’ll be in Atlanta for a concert at the State Farm Arena. Finally, they’ll perform in New York on Feb. 26 at the UBS Arena. Check out the dates below.

If your city isn’t listed, don’t worry. At the bottom of the poster, it says more dates will be coming soon.

How do I buy tickets for TWICE’s 2022 III World Tour?

TWICE has yet to announce when tickets will go on sale, so fans should pay close attention to their social media pages for more updates.

Before TWICE goes on tour, listen to their album Formula of Love: O+T=<3 below.

TWICE 5th WORLD TOUR ‘READY TO BE’

View and download our full TWICE event guide by clicking here !

ONCE, ready for more TWICE? 2nd SHOW added at United Center on June 29!

The 5TH WORLD TOUR ‘READY TO BE’’ promises to bring their signature high energy performance and a robust setlist of their chart-topping hits. TWICE’s 12th mini album, “READY TO BE,” was released on March 10.

Last year, TWICE completed their sold-out 4TH WORLD TOUR Ⅲ arena tour. These performances were a major milestone for the group, as made TWICE the first female K-Pop group to sell out two North American arena tours, as well as the first female K-Pop group to play a North American stadium. In August, they released their 11th EP, BETWEEN 1&2, which entered the Billboard 200 Album Chart at #3 and holds the biggest pure sales week for an album by a female K-Pop act in the US, further extending TWICE’s record for the most top 10 debuts on the chart among all K-Pop female acts. BETWEEN 1&2’s lead single “Talk that Talk” reached the top 20 on Billboard’s Global 200 chart, and top 10 on Billboard’s Global Excl. US chart, tying with “The Feels” as their highest charting single on the latter chart. They ended the year as the most-stream female K-Pop group on Spotify.

Most recently, TWICE released their second full English-language single, “MOONLIGHT SUNRISE” off their EP READY TO BE. The track debuted at #84 on the Billboard Hot 100 and earned TWICE career high-placements on Billboard’s Digital Song Sales chart (#3) and both Spotify’s US Chart (#39) and Global Chart (#60).

TWICE Are Still Reaching New Heights — and They’re Doing It Together

By Lai Frances

Photography by Jingyu Lin

TWICE members in a diagonal row seated

For a decade , the world has watched K-pop girl group TWICE dominate the music industry. Nine voices making beautiful harmonies, nine dancers executing choreography without missing a step, nine expertly coordinated outfits that tell a story of a song or a moment.

Year after year, this seemingly impossible cohesion has helped make TWICE the smash success the group is today, topping charts, selling out stadiums, traversing genres, aesthetics, and sounds. But for Nayeon , Jeongyeon, Momo, Sana, Jihyo , Mina, Dahyun, Chaeyoung, and Tzuyu it has always been more about their history, their personalities, and how they interact with one another as individuals, pairs, units, and, of course, as a whole.

TWICE debuted on October 20, 2015, with the single “Like Ooh-Ahh,” after each member had earned a spot in the group via the music competition-survival show, Sixteen. The following year, when the group released “Cheer Up,” TWICE earned its first music-show win ( new music competes on weekly TRL -esque live shows that consider fan votes, digital and physical sales, and streams), also winning the attention and hearts of the general public.

The members of TWICE were all teens when they debuted, living together under one roof, sharing rooms, and parts of their personal lives too. The six eldest members watched maknaes (youngest members) Dahyun, Chaeyoung, and Tzuyu graduate high school, and some members got their own driver's license along the way.

Dahyun remembers going to support Jihyo’s solo performance on Inkigayo last year, and how different it felt to watch one performer instead of nine. (In K-pop, it's more common to have individual members release solo music without leaving the group, as artists tend to do in Western groups.) “Just seeing her fulfilling everything when nine people usually split up each role and responsibility…” Dahyun recalls. “She was taking it all in herself, and it felt really emotional watching that.”

the members of twice smiling against a rose pink background

Together, though, the members form a leading girl group in third-generation K-pop , alongside BLACKPINK and Red Velvet, and have become known colloquially as “the Nation’s Girl Group,” a title that has historically referred to the legendary second-gen act Girls Generation (SNSD) and groups that are long beloved in South Korea and also have massive impact abroad.

TWICE's popularity in South Korea led to a Japanese debut that increased its status as a leading global group. TWICE became the first foreign act to perform and sell out three nights at the iconic Tokyo Dome, while also being the first K-pop girl group to do a dome tour.

As the global demand for K-pop has grown immensely over the past decade, so has TWICE’s fanbase. The group sold out arenas around the world during their Twicelights Tour in 2019, and again on the subsequent III Tour and Ready to Be Tour, in 2022 and 2023, respectively.

In 2021, amid the group's growing popularity, TWICE released its first US single, “The Feels.” It became the group's first Billboard Hot 100 hit. TWICE has since amassed more Top 10 debuts on the Billboard 200 chart than any other female K-pop act, according to JYP Entertainment.

The group is now setting the stage for its biggest year yet, and is at the forefront of a girl group renaissance, lifting up other acts as they ascend to new heights. “We’re very thankful,” Jeongyeon tells Teen Vogue . “It feels like, Wow. We grew up really well. It’s like a full-circle moment, and it’s fulfilling.”

Jeongyeon, dressed in a beige, loose-fitting denim jacket and a shredded chiffon dress, is the first of the members to face the camera during the group's Teen Vogue cover shoot. “I was really nervous when I got here,” says the 27-year-old Suwon, South Korea, native, resembling a real-life version of the nervous-smile emoji that has a drop of sweat on its head. Still, Jeongyeon knows her angles and can work the camera while maintaining a sense of play. She’s the prankster of the group. “I really love the members,” she says with a giggle. “I like to bring a happy atmosphere whenever I can.”

TWICE member Jeongyeon close up

On the other side of the studio, 27-year-old Sana, of Osaka, Japan, isn’t feeling nerves as much as excitement. She is known for her playful, Betty Boop-loving, “ cutie-sexy” image, but on set, she’s focused and ready to adapt. “There’s not a lot of opportunities to do a photo shoot in America. The feeling of it all is really new,” she says, looking like a queen in an ivory-colored Prada dress. “I feel that the promotions in the US are quite fun because the feelings of it are very different.”

TWICE member Sana up close in pink

Mina, 27, born in San Antonio and raised in Kobe, Japan, is also focused, but not so much on the shoot happening around her — it’s not her turn in front of the camera yet. “This is what I’m playing,” she says, turning her phone so I can see the Candy Crush-like game in which she’s engrossed. For Mina, this is the epitome of an “if you know, you know” moment. She maintains perfect posture, looking graceful in a pastel green dress, laser-focused on her phone, aiming to beat the next level in the moving-puzzle game.

Mina's glamorous high-fashion look at this moment, however, isn’t really her personal style, she says, which is more a mix of streetwear and feminine silhouettes. Often praised for her posh looks, Mina is among the TWICE members considered to be a fashion icon. Upon hearing this, she says with a light laugh and smiling eyes, “It’s far away, but I’m working on it!”

Mina sitting in chair with legs crossed

Momo, 27, who grew up in Kyoto, Japan, also prefers a more comfortable look than her glam one for the shoot. In the past, she was one to shy away from the mic, preferring to show off onstage with her choreography. But that has changed over the course of TWICE’s time as a group: She’s now more active and bold in showing off her talents outside of dancing.

“Actually, Momo recently became ‘mother’!” Jihyo later tells me, because she’s served looks, written songs, posed for the cover of various Japanese magazines, and become an ambassador for fashion and beauty brands.

Momo up close with fingers propped against her head

Tzuyu, a 24-year-old from Tainan, Taiwan, is the maknae of the nine and also known to be one of the quieter group members, next to Mina. According to her group mates, though, she is also one of the funniest, unintentionally. “I do feel that I kind of have that side to me,” she says with a chuckle, before confidently adding: “I’m quiet because of my birth sign [Gemini], but when I come out, I’m funny. ”

Or maybe it’s the charm of being the baby of the group. Tzuyu left home at 13, so the other members became the big sisters who raised her. Until now, they have spoiled and teased her as any siblings would, eventually getting her “maknae on top” moments when she can make her funny, blunt remarks but still be coddled at the end of the day. “Just receiving the love from the others makes me feel like, even if I get old, I will always be the maknae. Even in my 40s, I’ll be the maknae.”

Tzuyu up close

Behind Tzuyu is Chaeyoung, 25, from Seoul, South Korea, who has a strip of blonde flowing through her black hair. She is known to create music from a place of wisdom and confidence, and also has a penchant for tattoos.

Despite her flashy style, of all the solo stages on TWICE's tour, Chaeyoung's is perhaps the simplest, featuring only a chair, a mic stand (with a stuffed toy attached), and the performer herself singing an unreleased song. “I’ve always wanted to write a song [for myself],” she says. “But this time around, I actually really liked it personally. I’m not sure about genre, but I want to find a style that I would be really good at. And I want to get better at playing the guitar too.”

Chaeyoung full body holding skirt lightly above ankles

It’s nearly dinner time as 28-year-old Seoul native Nayeon stunts in a magenta ribbon-inspired dress reminiscent of her “Pop!” era : “It’s fancy,” she says. She feels “fulfilled” at the moment knowing all went well. Referencing that solo hit, TWICE’s eldest recalls performing the song on tour. “Playing the song in such a big stadium was so exciting,” she recalls with a slight smile. “And the fans singing along was really nice.”

Nayeon full body with legs crossed looking to the side

“Preppy” and “proper” are two words that could best describe 25-year-old Dahyun, raised in Seongnam, South Korea. She’s an observer, and reserved when it comes to professional settings like these. When you put her on the stage in front of her fans, however, or get her alone with the other TWICE members, she’s a walking meme.

Dahyun has three sides to her: “Cute, sexy, and free,” she says. The word “dubu,” or tofu in Korean, is one of Dahyun’s nicknames; in 2018, fans mashed it with the word "ahjusshi," or a Korean old man, to make “Dubjusshi,” one of Dahyun's “free" sides. The fan favorite viral moment came when she was caught roaming the streets of Chile in yellow plaid pajamas, red slides, an oversize black tee, a baseball cap, and shades, topped by a towel wrapped around her neck.

Regardless of the side she chooses to bring out, Dahyun’s mysterious presence offers a sense of calm and comfort. “I haven't thought about how I do it,” she says. “But if you see me that way, I really appreciate it! I want to become such a warm person, not just as shown, but in reality as well.”

Dahyun in a coat with hands on hips

Last but not least, there’s 27-year-old Jihyo, the group's leader from Guri, South Korea, who changes into slides before she approaches the table to get more comfortable. “Actually, when I do shoots with the members, I don’t really go for the outfit that’s on the feminine side,” she says. “But right now, the color, the style leans more towards the feminine side, so it’s quite new to me.”

With her solo music, Jihyo has been focused on staying true to the sense of self she’s found over time. “The main goal that I had regarding songs, or even when going on variety shows, was that I wanted to show my true self to everyone,” she told Teen Vogue last year.

Jihyo up close looking to the side

When the members gather for a shot of them all together, they’re wearing a mix of suits and dresses, posing against a spring-like background. It’s only appropriate, as the girls themselves are blooming into women, and the group into a global force in pop music.

“We’re really thankful [that we have] nine members,” Jihyo says. “For one person, one member can be their favorite and they might not like the rest, but because we push our team of nine together, the team vibes are really good. We’re really thankful because of that. And because of that, we actually get a lot closer.”

Outside of the nine, Nayeon, Jeongyeon, and Jihyo are known as 3Mix, a name inspired by a rumored JYP girl group called 6MIX that would include the three of them (and member Sana). Momo, Sana, and Mina, later known as MiSaMo, are bonded as the Japanese members of the group. (Fun fact: Momo and Sana passed the same JYP auditions, boarded the same flight to South Korea, joined the label on the same day, and moved into the dorms on the same day. After Momo was eliminated during Sixteen, Sana expressed that she wouldn’t be able to debut without her friend. Honestly, if that isn’t a sign of fated soulmates, what is?) And Dahyun, Chaeyoung, and Tzuyu are best known as the group’s School Meal Club, as they were the youngest members, who also still went to school.

As the years have passed, some of the members found places of their own as part of a new chapter in adult life, and some are paying their blessings forward, giving back to their loved ones and communities. Every chapter, every win, record broken, or achievement made as a group is reflected in their personal journeys.

TWICE in a diagonal seated row

A day after the photo shoot, I meet the group for lunch at their US publicist’s office near New York's Times Square. A spread of Prince Street pies, bucket combos of Jollibee fried chicken, and a tray of homemade turon (a Filipino snack made of brown sugar and banana wrapped in spring rolls) is laid out in a conference room, welcoming the group. Chatter and laughter fill the space. Jihyo is already distributing plates (leader energy) around the table, immediately rewarding herself with a drumstick from the bucket. It feels like watching a live variety show mukbang featuring a close-knit group of friends enjoying a nice meal.

The conference room feast celebrates the last couple of days of prepping for WITH YOU-th , with every moment leading to the final (and only) US show, a couple of weeks away. For the next two hours, this is TWICE’s “healing time,” when the nine women can sit back, relax, and be themselves. “It’s yaja time,” I say, calling on the group to speak freely or casually, whatever makes the members feel comfortable. “Yah!” Jihyo responds, playing along, chuckling with her mouth half full.

This nine-member ensemble has taken its Ready to Be Tour around the world, selling out arenas, domes, and stadiums in Asia, Europe, and North and South America. In a rare move, and switching up the K-pop concert gears, TWICE brought along JYP Entertainment’s newest girl group, VCHA, to open for them on select dates in Las Vegas, São Paulo, and Mexico City.

“Seeing their stage was really fun!” says Nayeon as she picks at her plate of food. Other members nod in agreement. “They actually watched our stage until the very end for all the concerts, and it was really moving for them. We felt they had a lot of learning points just from seeing their performances too,” she adds, referring to how they’ve grown as they’ve gotten more experience onstage.

TWICE and VCHA together in Las Vegas

The foundation of VCHA, which was formed through the reality show A2K , isn’t that much different from TWICE’s Sixteen aspect. The most wholesome part of this is that VCHA members Savanna and Camila have expressed in past interviews that TWICE is the reason they became idols.

Chaeyoung mouths “Oh!” in silent surprise. Jeongyeon shares that sentiment as the group members look up from their plates to acknowledge the reason their hoobae, or juniors, in the industry have joined the extended K-pop universe. Jihyo says “Daebak!" (meaning “Wow!”) as she covers her mouth. “I really didn’t know that,” Jeongyeon adds.

Perhaps it’s weird for them to take a meta look at their own impact, but the group's success is highly visible and ever-growing. TWICE has multiple brand deals across Asia. The members attend fashion weeks around the world amid sold-out world tours. They even have a dance-practice room named after them in the new JYP building in Seoul. They’re still trying to process it all. “We’re cool?” Chaeyoung questions jokingly.

On the group's newest single, “One Spark,” the members sing about being in their golden days. In reality, though, they’re in their golden era. They are still writing history and upholding their title as a top global act, simultaneously promoting in South Korea, Japan, and the US. (“We never really chose one place where we want to be an artist where we can meet our fans,” Jihyo says. “Of course, situation-wise for different countries, it may feel kind of sad since some opportunities come up in other countries and some don’t, but we’re really trying to find a good balance in between all of this.”)

Groups like VCHA, NiziU, and the rumored future Latin girl group from JYP are prime examples of TWICE’s ongoing legacy. Especially in an era when girl groups are having their rightful renaissance, they are “mother,” as Jihyo notes, using the term again.

It can be a heavy thing to carry sometimes. “That’s quite pressuring,” Jeongyeon says after hearing the meaning behind it.

“We (as TWICE) had a dream of becoming an artist while looking at other artists once,” Momo explains. “It’s just really cool that these younger people have the same dream looking at us as well. It’s just fascinating, and we’re very thankful because of that.”

TWICE standing against a backdrop with rose petal design in a studio

Getting to the top was no easy feat. Being under one of the biggest Korean entertainment labels was an advantage, but there was still pressure to carry the company’s title as the representative girl group of their generation. That pressure affected individual members’ physical and mental health, and TWICE became one of the first groups to speak openly about prioritizing mental health, specifically.

In 2019, Mina went on a six-month hiatus due to anxiety. Her story, along with the other members, became the sole inspiration behind the group's hit single, “Feel Special,” which highlighted their personal concerns and worries. In the ensuing two years, member Jeongyeon went on two hiatuses due to health concerns about her neck and “panic and psychological anxiety.” It was a clear missive for fans to not just push through pain, but to rest and heal, even if it means taking a break from various responsibilities. TWICE helped normalize discussions of mental health in K-pop, where it was considered especially taboo.

"I was scared at first, and I contemplated whether or not I should even publicize my state," Mina said in a 2020 Teen Vogue interview . "But I’m a human being. I have a heart. That’s why I suffered. What really helped were the other members."

In that same 2020 interview, Jihyo added, "I'm realizing that health isn't just about bodily health. Our mental states are intimately tied to our physical health."

Nayeon says that it took her years to be herself in front of the camera, and Jeongyeon adds that it took time to build stamina in this career. The first couple years as a K-pop idol are extremely busy and stressful; the performers are under pressure to establish a name for themselves and prove they can stand out in a crowded industry. And, of course, there was limited time to relax. It only got harder as the group's fame skyrocketed. After they topped the charts and won that first music show award, in 2016, with the second single “Cheer Up,” everything shifted again.

“During our debut era, it was really busy,” Sana recalls. “When people ask, ‘Are you tired?’ we’ll say, ‘Oh no, we’re not tired.’ ‘Are you busy?’ ‘Oh, we’re not busy.’ Now I express myself better when I'm tired. When I look back on it, I think, Did I really have to say the opposite of what I was feeling all these years?” She remembers being asked questions in interviews about what she liked or disliked, and struggling to answer. “I realized, I should know those kinds of things [about myself],” she concludes.

“We’re completely different [from our idol selves],” Nayeon continues. “Idols do have to use a lot of energy, and there is kind of a limit to how much a person can use their energy. We push all of that [away] while being an idol.”

“During concerts, I give my all,” says Momo. “But when I come back down the stage, I [take it easy] and relax right after.”

“Whenever we do pre-recordings and greet fans, I actually go home and take a rest in the middle of it all,” Jeongyeon says. “But once I’m done for the day, dancing and showing my charms, I just go back to doing laundry and cleaning. So [I found] a balance between those two.” She’s also learned that she has been hard on herself in the past: “I’m trying to be more generous to myself. Although that’s not always working, I’m trying really hard.”

Some of TWICE’s youngest members have found different ways to unplug from idoldom: Chaeyoung picked up a PS5 to play Minecraft, Tzuyu got into Gyrotonic, while Mina continues to uphold her nerdy off-duty image as the proud Marvel-loving, Lego-building gamer. (“I’ve watched all of it,” Mina says proudly after professing her love for Marvel and Iron Man.)

While they may be sunbaes, or seniors, in the industry, TWICE is a group that many new and upcoming acts aspire to be like — and do TikTok challenges with. “You know you have a new nickname, right?” I say, turning to Jihyo, who nods curiously. “Park TikTok.” She claps and points in acknowledgment, embodying the IJBOL expression well, causing the whole room to giggle.

But Jihyo’s latest moniker isn’t just a name she received for taking on random dance challenges with fellow group members and other artists; she’s putting in the work to make sure TWICE is up to date and can communicate well with younger peers. “It’s kind of my homework these days," she says, "just looking at what’s popping up and what’s popular.”

“All of them are doing so well now,” Nayeon says, praising this generation’s roster of acts. “But we feel like we’re learning at this point too. Take care of your health. Stay healthy and stay happy! Have your own individual time.”

“I feel they should utilize that free time better,” Jihyo advises. “I realize a lot of [young and newer artists] find me difficult to interact with,” she adds, noting that she’s now in the power position. “I kind of felt sad about this for myself with the group. It doesn’t feel like it’s been a long time that I’ve been doing this career. But now I can see the difference of how many years I have worked compared to the new artists coming in. And, for me, it’s okay to speak casually, but then they keep on bowing and are all, like, strict and stuff. Even when I did my solo stuff, I felt that as well. It’s like, ‘Oh, I actually do have quite a few years on my career now.’”

The members of TWICE have gotten used to criticism and judgment, first from label heads and professionals on Sixteen, later from fans and anti-fans. Before the decoration, celebration, and praise of today, there were bad days, stressful times, and the hardships that shaped them.

Nayeon says she doesn’t have many regrets: “There was a reason why certain things happen during certain times.”

“What I actually regret is that I felt I had a lack of understanding of what this career entailed,” Jihyo says. “After kind of accepting that, now I know how to utilize my personal time to differentiate it from when I’m working.”

After a second of silence, Nayeon blurts out, “Bleaching my hair too much!,” apparently recalling a regret, which opens a can of worms for the rest of the group.

There are a couple nods and a “Ah! 맞아!" (meaning “Right!”) from around the room, especially from Chaeyoung. Sana buries her head in her hands and murmurs, “Definitely the pigtails I wore during the ‘Cheer Up’ showcase.” Mina makes air pigtails on her head.

Momo, a former fiend for jokbal, a savory dish of Korean pig trotters, regrets going on a variety show where she danced to “Like Ooh-Ahh” with a whole jokbal in her hand. “That was such a miss for me,” she says. Jihyo picks up, “Because that was Momo’s favorite food, she received so many gifts with jokbal.” Says Nayeon, cracking up, “I’ve never seen Momo order or even eat jokbal anymore after that [era].”

Now the members are feeling nostalgic. “I wish we [could] go on variety shows all together again,” says Nayeon. “During our debut period, we got on a lot of programs, but we don’t go on much now, and we’re kind of missing it.”

Times have changed, though, and TWICE, alongside many groups, has begun creating its own variety shows. The group, and Jeongyeon specifically, wants to produce its own variety show. “It’s actually a really funny idea,” she pitches everyone in the room. “Jihyo would call her friend to do an interview, but then the emcee would be Momo.”

“Call it Talk That Talk ,” Dahyun responds, followed by sounds and nods of approval from the other group members for referencing their 2022 title track.

In that moment it’s evident how much they cherish their past, present, and future. They may have learned how to better protect their time and grown a lot as individual people and as a group, but some things never change. They still assemble like the Avengers whenever together. “The Power of 9,” as ONCE, their fans, call them. The members of TWICE are grounded, humble, and endlessly grateful to those who support them, no matter the era or distance.

“Because of this work, I do receive a lot, as much as I put in,” Jihyo says. “And while living as a person, it’s not easy to receive all this type of love. Because of this career, we’ve been able to receive lots of love. Without this career, would I have been able to go on a plane [even] once? But because of this, I go on planes very often.” The group nods, listening as their leader shares what they all were thinking.

“So, what’s next?” My question is vague, but the members share their personal bucket list wishes. Nayeon wants to be a better driver, as it has been five years since she received her license; Chaeyoung wants to work on more songs; Mina wants to visit Milan, for a concert or fashion show; Momo wants to do some solo traveling; Tzuyu wants to travel to countries she hasn’t been to before and perform there, to which Dahyun agrees, adding that she wants to continue to be healthy and happy. Oh, and they’re all interested in pursuing acting down the line.

But in terms of what’s next on the group's 2024 agenda after their Las Vegas show, another solo is in the works, following Nayeon and Jihyo’s. But who, exactly? TWICE is known as the group that spoils fans and followers with upcoming new releases, but it's time for them to have a taste of their own medicine and let me be the one to do the spoiling.

I turn to Nayeon and congratulate her. “How does it feel to be back?” I ask. The group gasps in shock, like they’ve been fooled. The sounds of “Ah!” and “뭐야!” from all nine women fill the room.

A nice, playful scolding from TWICE’s leader follows. “Why’d you do that?” Jihyo says, taking a sip of her Pineapple Quencher. “We were trying to hide it from you!”

Members are still shaking their heads, laughing.

“Well, I'm really excited and thrilled,” Nayeon says. “I tried a whole new concept for this album, and it was so much fun working on it…. Unlike the lovely mood presented in ‘Pop!,’ I wanted a more honest and mature side. You'll be able to see a more powerful side of me.”

After the release of TWICE’s single “I Got You,” which peaked at No. 38 on the Billboard Global 200, earlier this month, fans were quick to create theories that Jeongyeon would be the next soloist based on her signature neon green color in the title track’s font in the ending credits. “I didn’t even think about that!” Jeongyeon says, laughing, “'Cause I thought ‘I Got You’ and the music video carries a natural theme. I think that’s why we used the green color, and I didn’t think any intention was in it. I don’t have any plans for now. I hope my fans are not too excited and [don’t] anticipate too much.”

Jeongyeon shares this with the group, and the members are impressed that fans would go to that length. The comeback soloist, on the other hand, laughs and expresses her wish to see her fellow member go solo. Nayeon’s gears are clearly turning as if the new information she just learned will support her next spoiler scheme .

Whether they tag team to tease fans (or one another) or promote the endeavors of their group mates, there’s an ongoing practice for the nine-member group: They are one another’s support system. Nayeon, Jeongyeon, Momo, Sana, Jihyo, Mina, Dahyun, Chaeyoung, and Tzuyu all started off as friendly competitors. But over the past decade, they’ve become a family of sisters who’ve celebrated each other in the highest of highs and provided supported through the lowest of lows. They left home to pursue this career, but they have a home in each other now. No matter what the next decade of their career brings, they’ll be ready.

“We’re really thankful [for everything],” Jihyo says, nodding. “Because we push our team of nine together, the vibes are really good, and because of that, we actually get a lot closer.”

As the group wraps up, finishing drinks and taking last bites of food, Jihyo looks around the room, then at each member one by one. Known as the “mic” of the group, the one who has trained the longest of all, Jihyo gets the last word: “We’re really proud of each other.”

“TWICE WORLD TOUR 2019 ‘TWICELIGHTS´IN JAPAN” (March 3, March 4) Tokyo Dome Concert Cancellation and Reschedule Notice

ABOUT TWICE

TWICE, a nine-member girl group from Asia that "captivates you once with their good music and twice with their great performance". They gained overwhelming support from a wide range of people, especially teenagers, and caused a social phenomenon. Since their Japanese debut in 2017, they have performed in the annual New Year's Eve music show "Kohaku Uta Gassen" for three consecutive years and have broken numerous records with their releases.

In spring 2019, they held a dome tour, which has been a dream of theirs! The fastest to perform at Tokyo Dome since their debut. At the time, this was the fastest time ever recorded in Japan for an overseas artist, and the first time for a girl group debuting in Korea to conduct a dome tour! TWICE held a three-day concert at Tokyo Dome in April 2022. They set a record as the first girl group debuting from Korea to perform at Tokyo Dome for three days. Not stopping the momentum, in May 2023, they held their first stadium live concert in Japan, "TWICE 5TH WORLD TOUR 'READY TO BE' in JAPAN" ! The event was held at Ajinomoto Stadium in Tokyo and Yanmar Stadium Nagai in Osaka for a total of four days. The total number of applications exceeded 1.2 million, and tickets became sold out in a moment. The performance attracted approximately 220,000 people. TWICE made history once again by becoming the first girl group from Korea to ever perform a solo stadium concert.

cbs madison square garden billy joel 1000th special

When Billy Joel ’s camp decided to commemorate his 100th show of a mega-residency at Madison Square Garden with a television special, the question arose of whether to go with a major streamer or a major broadcast network. But there was little doubt in the end that they would go with the most populist possible pick, as the producers of “Billy Joel: The 100th Live at Madison Square Garden” explained in a panel discussion for the Variety FYC Streaming Room.

By “two bites of the apple,” Cohen is referring to the fact that CBS ended up broadcasting the Joel special twice. With the first airing, a mistake was made in the eastern time zone that cut the singer-songwriter off, mid-song, during “Piano Man,” to let local stations put on their late-night news, after sports programming earlier in the day had caused the network special to run overtime. There was a resulting uproar that made national headlines, and CBS quickly reacted by scheduling a second airing of the show five nights later, resulting in an impressive total of 10 million broadcast viewers, apart from the tally the special picked up on Paramount+.

Having the network accidentally pull the plug early on Joel, and then schedule an immediate rerun due to fan outrage, couldn’t have been a better publicity stunt if it had been planned as one… which, of course, everyone involved swears it wasn’t. “At the end of the whole thing, I kept saying, you know, if Colonel Parker was alive, this would’ve been something he would’ve pulled with Elvis,” Cohen laughed.

“It was a super win-win for us,” he continued. “And I’ve got to give props to CBS because they did not skip a beat. I got a call the next morning, and they not only scheduled a rebroadcast five days later, but they said that they would promote it as a premier event again. They put the same amount of spots on the air, and literally put their shoulder behind it. That also, I think, is the benefit of doing network television, because they’re a behemoth and they know how to do all of that stuff. It worked out great for them, too, because they had another big night of variety television.”

This special was a culmination — for now — of a great deal of years put in by most of the team members represented on the panel. Ruggles has been with Joel for 52 years, and it’s been almost 50 for Cohen, who claims, “we were in diapers, I think. WIth Brian and I, our nicknames in the early days were Dr. Sound and Dr. Lights, because Billy sort of trusted us to be the front-of-house eyes and ears for him. It was the logical progression really, after 50 years and thousands of shows in both stadiums and arenas, to be the guys who could interpret this and deliver it to a director (Dugdale) to film.”

Said Byrnes, the guitarist, “I’ve been playing guitar with Billy since the first week of April in 1990, so I’ve been with him 34 years, 45 days and 28 minutes” he laughs — “or close to that. Obviously it’s the greatest gig I’ve ever had.” But not everyone on this panel goes back quite as far. Said Fuffano, “I’ve been with the Billy family for 25 years, so I’m the kid in the group.”

Obviously there is something there that has to do with “A Matter of Trust,” to quote a Joel song title. Said Byrnes, “You have to try to lose this gig. You have to prove to Billy that you’re not loyal, that you’ve lost the faith, that you really don’t wanna be here. I know because I tried my best, every way I could think of, to get thrown outta his band,” he joked. “It just doesn’t work… It’s a testament that he’ll stick with as long as you stick with him.”

There was little time for true pre-production on the special, but since the principals had already been lighting and recording the MSG shows every night as Joel did them, that served as the real pre-production.

“There was a spider cam that was obviously flying through the air and showing the whole room,” said Dugdale. “And part of the aim for the space as a whole was to kind of match the lighting in the room, and the way that the architecture and the way that the bowl looks, to the stage lighting, so that the whole space becomes the kind of performance area, in a way.”

Noted Foffano, “It was just a natural progression to make the audience an expansion of the stage canvas. It was actually rather easy to do, because we’re the fourth franchise of Madison Square Garden. We had 200 lights that were part of the sports franchises of the Garden that they allowed us to use, so there was plenty of audience light to have that ability to expand things.”

As for Joel himself, “for the majority of the show, he sits at the piano. And the piano does move,” Dugdale pointed out. “But we were really keen to try and bring movement to Billy. So in all of the vocal shots, mid shots, we were able to have those just gently moving, constantly developing, so that the frames’ composition starts in one way with one background and ends with another. Everything is constantly moving and just changing to really engage the audience. You’re constantly going on an adventure.”

Said Cohen, “The piano’s on a turntable, and Billy controls that. And one of the things that’s funny about him is, you can’t script it. The minute you try and ask him to not move it, he’ll move the piano. The time you ask him to move it, he won’t move it. So basically what we had to do is create these multiple backgrounds that Paul was talking about that would always look good whenever the piano would move. So we had to be sort of planning things, but they had to be organic enough that they could be flexible when that move would happen.”

The set list was interesting, and that is mostly Cohen’s domain, surprisingly. “As far as the set list goes, that’s been a Steve thing forever,” said Byrnes, who noted that Joel is happy to have someone else handle it. “Stevewrites the set list and then Brian and myself argue with him about it, because sometimes I feel like he’s just out to get me. Because he’ll write a set list where the first 13 songs have 13 guitar changes in them. And I’m like, you’re killing me. Can we do two in a row (with the same guitar)?”

Sometimes deeper tracks make the list, like they did with “Vienna” for this particular performance, and it was important to the team to include a non-single like that, even as a two-and-a-half-hour show had to get trimmed down to about 90 minutes for broadcast.

“ We got a performance of ‘Still Rock and Roll’ that trumped the performance of ‘We Didn’t Start the Fire,’ so we cut ‘We Didn’t Start the Fire’ in lieu of a better performance that Billy delivered that night. We needed to have a little bit of wiggle room on shifting those songs… if it was ‘Vienna’ or ‘Just the Way You Are.’… I kept looking at, if you’ve never been there, what would the experience be like? It’d be hits, deep tracks, Billy’s personality, Billy’s funny little businesses, a guest star and the audience. And how do we get all of that into something that encompasses everything we’ve always done?”

They believe they brought the real experience to home viewers. “It’s like Billy’s playing in a piano bar that has 20,000 people in it,” said Ruggles. That includes knowing, after so many shows, that if Joel sings “Only the Good Die Young,” the whole audience is going to shout out the part about “the nice white dress” and the party at a confirmation, and plan to optimally capture that on camera and an audio. “We have 20,000 background singers on any given night,” said Byrnes.

The person at the switch at the network might have had their own ideas about trimming the setlist, when it came to throwing back to local affiliates. That person may deserve a raise.

Ehrmann said, “I was watching with my wife, and I’ve seen this show probably 120 times in post-production, and … I gave her a special thanks (in the credits). So I’m watching the show with her, and all I wanted her to do was see her name on the screen. And then all of a sudden, boom, we went into the news and it went from a giant WTF to, you know, gold. I mean, it was an outrage on the internet.” He likened it to the very pre-internet stir when a network cut off a Jets game to go to an airing of “Heidi.” “I remember as an 8-year-old, watching the Jets get cut off, and I was like, oh, history’s repeating itself. And it just turned into gold for us, and for Billy, and for the fans. CBS did the right thing, and they made a public apology, and then they rebroadcast on Friday night, and we got in front of 10 million people. I mean, how could you ask for anything more?”

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Multiple top-prize winning tickets were sold in New York City for a recent TAKE 5 drawing, according to lottery officials.

The New York Lottery announced that four winning tickets worth $8,301 were sold for the May 29 TAKE 5 evening drawing. All four of the winners bought tickets in New York City — one winning ticket each in Brooklyn and the Bronx, and two winning tickets in Queens.

You can run for president from prison as a felon. Here's what happened when 2 candidates campaigned from behind bars.

 • The Constitution doesn't stop candidates from running for president while serving jail time.
 • Two previous candidates, Eugene V. Debs in 1920, and Lyndon LaRouche in 1992, both ran from prison.
 • If Trump is sentenced to prison, it's still possible he could run for president from behind bars.

Insider Today

Former President Donald Trump was found guilty on Thursday of all 34 criminal counts related to a hush-money payment made to porn star Stormy Daniels. It's the first time a former president has been convicted of a felony. With sentencing scheduled for July 11, Trump could face prison time. But as the presumptive Republican nominee in the 2024 presidential race, could Trump still run for office from behind bars?

Legal experts told Business Insider there's nothing in the Constitution preventing him from doing just that.

Michael Gerhardt, a constitutional law professor at the University of North Carolina School of Law in Chapel Hill, said: "If he happens to be in prison at the time of the next presidential election, the fact that he's in prison will not prevent him from running."

Running for president from jail isn't exactly unprecedented — it's been done twice before. Though, to be clear, neither candidate was anywhere near Trump's level.

Barring a seismic event, the former president will accept his third straight Republican presidential nomination just days after he is sentenced. Any appeals process may delay his possible jail time by years, if he goes at all .

Socialist Eugene V. Debs ran from behind bars over 100 years ago

In 1920, Socialist Eugene V. Debs ran for the Oval Office from the Atlanta Federal Penitentiary, where he was known as "prisoner 9653," according to Smithsonian Magazine. Debs was a so-called "radical" at the time, decrying capitalism and the World War I draft. The latter got him locked up, but Debs earned plenty of supporters during his imprisonment. He had also run for president on the Social Party ticket five prior times, often campaigning what historians attributed as more a symbolic race.

On election night in 1920, Debs didn't make a speech, and instead, he wrote a statement, the Washington Post reported.

Related stories

"I thank the capitalist masters for putting me here," he wrote, according to The Post. "They know where I belong under their criminal and corrupting system. It is the only compliment they could pay me."

Debs ended up earning about 3.5% of the national vote for president, Smithsonian Magazine reported.

Fringe candidate Lyndon LaRouche tried for the Democratic Party nomination and then switched tickets

Over 70 years later, another convicted candidate ran for the president from jail: political fringe and conspiracy theorist Lyndon LaRouche.

LaRouche was no stranger to campaigning — he ran in every election from 1976 to 2004 — but his 1992 campaign from federal prison garnered particular attention.

USA Today reported in 2019 that in the lead-up to the 1992 election , LaRouche was behind bars serving a 15-year sentence for committing mail fraud and campaign fraud conspiracy, the latter involving $30 million in loans from supporters that prosecutors said LaRouche had never attempted to repay. But that didn't stop him from seeking out the Democratic Party nomination.

When Bill Clinton won the primary, LaRouche switched to the National Economic Recovery ticket, campaigning on overhauling the world's financial and baking systems. He ultimately received over 26,000 votes in the election, about 0.02% of the popular vote.

Beyond his economic viewpoints, LaRouche's other beliefs often played into conspiracy theories and apocalyptic visions about the world, Reuters reported in 2019 . He had a variety of confounding views of the AIDS crisis —including that it was first spread by the International Monetary Fund — and believed the Holocaust was "mythical," Reuters and USA Today reported.

What would it look like for Trump to campaign from prison?

While Debs and LaRouche were both unsuccessful in their campaigns, they were still able to run for president while behind bars. Their supporters, running mates, and parties spread the word, bolstering their messages when they couldn't.

If Trump goes to prison, he "would be subject to the same rules as other prisoners, which could restrict their communications and ability to appear at events," Barbara McQuade, a law professor at the University of Michigan and a former US attorney, previously told Insider. "He would need to rely on proxies to campaign for him ."

It's not clear, even if Justice Juan Merchan sentences Trump to prison, if the former president will serve his sentence before the election. Trump's lawyers could request that the sentence be stayed pending an appeal — pushing the possibility of him having to report to prison far beyond Election Day.

One thing is certain: The Secret Service would stay by Trump's side.
