Greenville’s Jamie McDonough, co-owner of full-service bike shop and tour operator Reedy Rides , echoes Lata’s sentiments, saying: “In addition to the pleasant weather, spring and early fall offer a plethora of outdoor activities.”

To avoid the larger crowds, try early spring, fall, or even winter. “With fewer visitors, you can enjoy a more relaxed and authentic experience,” she adds. 

The coastal region follows a similar pattern, although the Lowcountry’s humidity can deter visitors in the height of summer. "[Charleston] experiences the biggest crowds from March through June and again in October,” says Chef Lata. “You’ll have the city to yourself in late September.”

Home to the University of South Carolina, Columbia sees similar trends, but its population is directly impacted by the school. “Summer and fall are typically the most crowded times of the year for Columbia, with university-oriented events like campus orientation, back-to-school, and the start of the football season being major drivers,” says Tanya Black, Graduate Columbia’s general manager. Her advice? Come in the winter. “Visitor traffic typically slows down between December and January due to the holiday season,” she says.

There are two weather-related factors you’ll want to watch out for when planning your South Carolina adventure: the heat (which, mixed with the notorious humidity, can be rather unpleasant) and hurricane season, which peaks in August and September. “If you’re looking to enjoy South Carolina without the heat and humidity, I’d recommend visiting in the shoulder-season months,” says Black. “From late April to early June and early September to late October, you’ll get all the benefits of warm weather without it being too overbearingly humid.”

It may not be swimming weather, but the colder months can be a great time to visit, too. “Winters can be very pleasant and mild, so don't count the holidays out for a visit,” says McDonough.

Room rates at beach resorts also remain high in July and August, with more families flocking to the coast for summer vacations. If you're looking to save money and avoid the sweltering weather, a visit between December and February (except during the holidays) should allow you to save some money, no matter where you’re going in the state. Golfers may find green fees to be less expensive during the winter. And in the state capital, hotel rates tend to decrease as temperatures drop. “While we do typically see a post-holiday spike in February, it is still less expensive compared to the summer months,” says Black.

“Greenville hosts a variety of arts, music, and food festivals during the spring and fall, offering a unique cultural experience for visitors,” says McDonough. “The Artisphere festival , held in May, showcases the works of talented artists from around the country, while Fall for Greenville , held in October, celebrates the city's vibrant culinary scene with delicious food and live entertainment.”

Further southeast in Columbia, you’ll find the Rosewood Crawfish Festival in May, the Columbia Shrimp & Grits Festiva l in June, and the South Carolina State Fair in October. If you keep driving in the same direction, you’ll eventually end up in Charleston, a city with no shortage of festivals, events, and family-friendly programming in the springtime. And while the weather is moderate year-round, the best times to visit Charleston are from March to May and from September to November. In the spring, the flowers are in full bloom, the heat and humidity haven't set in, and hurricane season hasn't begun. Come fall, there are fewer crowds, cheaper hotel rooms, and ideal temperatures.

Located on the South Carolina coast, Charleston has a subtropical climate , which makes temperatures and conditions favorable almost all year. In winter, highs are in the mid-50s and rarely dip below freezing, even at night. Summers can be hot and humid, with temperatures soaring into the upper 80s and low 90s—especially in the city proper. This is a good time to take advantage of nearby beaches, but you'll want to pack an umbrella: August is the city's wettest month. Spring and fall offer the most favorable weather, with temperatures in the 60s and 70s, sparse humidity, and little rain.  

Peak Season in Charleston

There are two peak seasons in Charleston. The first is in spring, from March to May. This is when the magnolia trees and azaleas are in full bloom, the temperatures are mild, and annual events like the Charleston Food & Wine Festival and Spoleto Festival USA are in full swing. The city is a particularly popular destination during the Easter holidays and spring break, so expect hotel rates to soar and attractions to be crowded.

The second peak comes in the fall (between September and November), when the temperatures cool off, the humidity is less stifling, and the city is ideal for walking and exploring.

Hurricane Season in Charleston

Because of its location on the Eastern Seaboard, the city is at risk for hurricanes. Hurricane season is from June 1 to November 30 annually, with peak time between August and October. However, South Carolina has a lower risk of hurricanes than Florida or other states on the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts. On average, only 11 percent of all hurricanes making landfall since 1851 have hit South Carolina; only six of them were Category 3 or higher.

While odds are unlikely you'll encounter a hurricane during your trip, most hotels and airlines will refund or rebook your trip if you do. You can also purchase hurricane insurance as an extra precaution.

Winter in Charleston

Winter is off-season in Charleston, with crowds dissipating after the holidays and remaining sparse through early spring. Expect cheaper hotel rates, fewer tourists, and relatively mild temperatures, with highs in the upper 50s and lower 60s and lows in the mid-40s. If you plan to do a lot of walking, layer and pack a warm jacket: It can get quite breezy and chilly, especially by the waterfront.

• Holiday Festival of Lights at James Island : This can't-miss event features a 3-mile driving tour through a display of lights, s'more roasting stations, carousel and train rides, and other activities for the whole family. It takes place during the holiday season from mid-November through the end of December.
• Southeastern Wildlife Exposition : A three-day event in February that includes conservation education, sporting events, art exhibitions, and other events dedicated to wildlife and nature.

Spring in Charleston

With ideal temperatures and the entire city in bloom, spring is peak season in Charleston. Hotel rates are at their highest here, and you'll fight crowds for popular attractions; buy your tickets and make your dinner reservations in advance.

• Charleston Food + Wine Festival : Held the first week in March, the festival features culinary demonstrations, food and beverage tastings, and educational sessions with some of the country's top food personalities like Katie Button and Edward Lee.
• Festival of Houses and Gardens : For a few weeks in March and April, tour some of the city's finest private homes and gardens at this annual festival. It also includes culinary demonstrations, walking tours, and musical performances.
• Charleston Jazz Festival : A weekend-long celebration in April that hosts internationally-renowned musicians like Regina Carter as well as local blues, Brazilian, and other artists.
• Spoleto Festival USA : This performing arts festival takes place in venues throughout the city over three weeks in May and June. From opera and chamber music to dance, jazz, theater, and more, the festival is a one-of-a-kind celebration of the arts.

Summer in Charleston

Summers can be oppressively hot and humid in Charleston, but air conditioning is plentiful, and the nearby beaches offer some respite from the weather. You'll still find larger crowds through the 4th of July holiday, but in general, the city is less crowded and rates are lower during this time of year. Pack rain gear for August as it's the city's wettest month.

• Celebrate Independence Day at Patriots Point : This has the area's largest fireworks display. Purchase a ticket to watch them aboard the historic USS Yorktown, or pack a cooler and plop a chair down on the land nearby (there is a small parking fee).
• Freshfields Village Starlight Cinema Series : Enjoy movies under the stars at this free film series. The event takes place at Freshfields Village on Kiawah Island. Check the schedule to see what's playing and at what time.

Fall marks another peak time to visit Charleston, when temperatures cool off and summer beach visitors retreat for the school year. You can expect comfortable temperatures in the 60s and 70s well into November, but do be aware of hurricanes and tropical storms.

• Boone Hall Pumpkin Patch : From a corn maze to a petting zoo, rock climbing wall, and hayride, Boone Hall offers autumnal fun for the whole family throughout the month of October.

Located about 100 miles southwest of Charleston, Hilton Head Island caters to travelers seeking a slow-paced vacation. Much less developed than other beach options like Myrtle Beach and North Carolina's Outer Banks, Hilton Head Island boasts 12-plus miles of pristine shoreline. Coligny Beach Park offers a wealth of facilities, such as adjacent shops and restaurants, but those looking for less-crowded sands should seek out the beach access point at Alder Lane. With 10 miles of undisturbed beaches, renowned golf courses and top-notch resorts , Kiawah Island has all the essentials for a serene (albeit costly) beach vacation. Kiawah Island (located about 30 miles southwest of Charleston) features smooth beaches that are great for biking, lounging and spotting bottlenose dolphins and sea turtles. Meanwhile, novice golfers can attend clinics at a learning center, while pros can take on the challenging Ocean Course (notorious for its wind). Come mealtime, visitors can find everything from ice cream parlors to upscale dining at the island's resorts or the picture-perfect Freshfields Village.

Beaufort's quaint oak tree-lined streets and Civil War-era homes provide a glimpse into the small town's antebellum days. Sign up for a walking or horse-drawn carriage tour to take in your surroundings, then visit the Beaufort History Museum to learn more about the town's past. You'll also want to check out Penn Center on the nearby St. Helena Island to educate yourself about Gullah culture. Although Greenville doesn’t receive throngs of visitors like other South Carolina destinations, it's one of the fastest-growing cities in the country, meaning it may not remain a hidden gem for much longer. Located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Greenville has earned a reputation as a hub for outdoor activities. Head to Falls Park on the Reedy to walk across its impressive Liberty Bridge or bike the 28-mile Prisma Health Swamp Rabbit Trail. In town, catch a show at the Peace Center, stroll down Main Street or mingle with friendly locals at a brewery.

This small town between Charleston and Myrtle Beach packs in a lot of history. Get the lay of the land with a tram tour in the historic district, where you'll find attractions that tell disparate stories of life before the Civil War, from Georgian mansions like the Kaminski House Museum to The Rice Museum, which details Georgetown's impactful rice plantation economy. A boat tour can also take you past plantations like Hopsewee Plantation and Hobcaw Barony, which call attention to Native American and Gullah culture and the slave experience. Situated less than 17 miles southwest of Myrtle Beach, Huntington Beach State Park offers an escape from the busyness of South Carolina's better-known beaches. Central South Carolina's Congaree National Park is home to North America's largest stretch of old-growth bottomland hardwood forest, making it an excellent place to go hiking. Congaree boasts more than 27 miles of trails and boardwalks suitable for all skill levels, including the shorter Boardwalk Loop Trail and longer paths like the Weston Lake Trail and the Oakridge Trail that are havens for birds, wild turkeys and deer. When you're not exploring its beautiful forest, spend a few hours fishing in Congaree National Park's lakes or canoeing or kayaking down Cedar Creek.

Caesars Head State Park stuns visitors with an easily accessible overlook that grants sweeping views of the Blue Ridge Escarpment's 2,000-foot drop. This outcropping is just the starting point for exploring the park, which sits roughly 30 miles northwest of Greenville on the North Carolina-South Carolina border. Sixty-plus miles of trails lead to sights like the Devil's Kitchen, where hikers can clamber between narrow walls of a mountain that's been split in two, and Raven Cliff Falls, which rewards those who complete the 2-mile trail with a 420-foot cascade. Fishing and bird-watching (particularly during the fall hawk migration) are also popular things to do.

Before planning your trip, take the city’s tourist seasons into consideration, as they’ll likely impact everything from the crowds to airfare and hotel prices.

Best Times to Visit Charleston for Good Weather

Spring and fall are prime times to comfortably explore all of Charleston’s beauty. Take it from local meteorologist Josh Marthers of WCBD News 2 : “Any time is a great time to visit the best city in the world, but a couple of periods really shine. Our driest months are typically April and November with quite mild temperatures from late March through mid-May. We see those nicer temperatures and lower humidity levels return late September through mid-November.” Average temperatures in April range from upper 50s to low 70s, while those in November from low 50s to upper 60s. 

One caveat worth considering: The city is subject to hurricanes, with the Atlantic season running from the start of June through the end November and peak time for such storms lasting August through October. Of course, to Marthers’ point, assuming that there are no tropical storms or hurricanes on the radar, October is a lovely, mild-weathered month to visit, with average temperatures ranging from low 60s to mid 70s.

Best Time to Visit Charleston for Lower Prices and Smaller Crowds

Planning a trip for the winter months (December through February) is the best way to experience so many of the Holy City’s highlights without having to battle crowds or pay premium rates for accommodations (holidays and festival weekends can be exceptions). While you likely won’t be swimming—unless you brave one of the area beaches’ New Year’s Day Polar Plunges—the milder winter weather still allows for beautiful beach walks and bundled-up picnics. 

For Tyler Page Wright Friedman, certified tour guide and founder of Walk & Talk Charleston, winter is actually one of her favorite times of year in the city: "Winter is an ideal season to explore downtown and all of our world-class museums," she says. And the rewards extend beyond lower cost and smaller crowds: "Historically, the holiday season was the social season in Charleston," she explains. "Many of the gardens were designed to bloom during this time, and so we have the beautiful camellias, Christmas senna, and the sweetgrass has turned a beautiful shade of pink." It's also oyster season, Friedman notes, so put all of those together, and you've landed yourself the perfect Charleston winter weekend.

For those willing who don't mind sweating a little, you may also consider visiting during the city’s shoulder season, June through August.  Chef Mike Lata , who owns two of the city's most beloved restaurants ( FIG and The Ordinary ), says late June is the shoulder season’s sweet spot: “Things start to slow down, so it’s a bit easier to get hotel deals and reservations at restaurants. The weather is warm but not stifling.  There is also lots of great local food to eat and the water has had a chance to warm up, making for great fishing, surfing, and general beachgoing.”

Best Times to Visit Charleston for Festivals and Events 

The Holy City plays host to a number of festivals and events throughout the year, all of which celebrate the various hallmarks of the historic peninsula town.  Festival season here kicks off with mid-February’s Southeastern Wildlife Exposition , more commonly referred to as SEWE (pronounced “see-wee”), when nature lovers, conservationists, and outdoorsmen descend on the city to shop a host of wildlife-oriented artists and exhibitors, attend cooking demos, and watch dogs participate in water jumping competitions. (The weekend is also an exception to winter’s typically smaller crowds.) 

In March and April, the Historic Charleston Foundation hosts its longest-running annual event, The Charleston Festival (formerly called the Festival of Houses and Gardens), which celebrates the city’s history and culture through a series of lectures on preservation and design, as well as tours of privately owned homes and gardens. April’s first Saturday also lays claim to the annual Cooper River Bridge Run , which invites runners and walkers of all skill levels to “Get Over It,” “It” being the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge that connects the suburb of Mount Pleasant to downtown Charleston over the Cooper River. 

Late May into June brings one of Charleston’s hallmark events, Spoleto Festival USA , when world-class performers, musicians, dancers, and artists from around the globe bring their talents to the Holy City for a 17-day series of live performances, art shows and exhibitions, and artist talks.

You’ll also find the Southern Living team in town twice throughout the year—in September for our Tailgate Party (part of the first-ever Food & Wine Classic in Charleston ) and again in December for Illumination Charleston (a curated holiday market, plus demos from our favorite chefs and entertaining experts; 2024 dates not yet announced). 

Best Times to Visit Charleston for a Beach Trip

If you’re planning to spend most of your Lowcountry stay playing on the area’s surrounding beaches , rather than diving into historic walking tours, summer is a great time to visit, as an ocean breeze or quick dip in the water can relieve even the hottest, muggiest day. By June, the ocean and other waterways have warmed up, making for comfortable swimming and other watersports, like surfing, paddleboarding, and kayaking. 

Pop-up afternoon thunderstorms aren’t uncommon in the summer, but they usually clear up as quickly as they roll in. July and August tend to see the most rain (8 or 9 days of rainfall), so if you’re faced with a wet day, take advantage of one of the city’s many museums, from The Gibbes Museum of Art to the recently opened International African American Museum , or explore all the amazing local shops .

Worst Times to Visit Charleston

The worst time to visit Charleston is subjective, as it depends on your personal travel preferences and those activities you plan to enjoy while there. However, as a born-and-raised Charleston native who often felt pity for the sweating, red-faced tourists who trudged past as I sat in the comfort of my mom’s air-conditioned car, July and August are about the most miserable months to plan a trip centered around walking tours and general sightseeing. In my experience, I’ve found that a beach day on Sullivan’s Island —or a reservation at one of our many delicious (and air-conditioned) restaurants—are about the only antidotes to our summer’s scorching heat.

It’s also worth noting that Charleston is home to a couple of colleges, including The Citadel and the College of Charleston, so if you’re not looking to be swept up in the excitement of move-in or graduation weekends, consult their academic calendars before booking your travel.

Deciding on the best time to visit Charleston, SC is the crucial first step in planning your amazing Charleston vacation. Lucky for you, there’s never a bad time to visit Charleston! But that doesn’t help you decide when’s the best time for you .

So, let’s review all four seasons in Charleston and what to expect in each, so you can make an informed decision for when’s the best time to visit Charleston for you!

Visiting Charleston, SC: When’s the Best Time to Go?

Charleston is South Carolina’s charming, historical, oceanfront powerhouse. The city was founded in the early 1600’s when the Carolina colony was first established, and Charleston quickly grew into the South’s most important port city.

Today, it’s still an important port city, but it’s also become one of the United States’ top vacation destinations . Travel + Leisure ranked Charleston the USA’s #1 City and travel destination for 9 years in a row!

There’s so much to see and do and eat here that it appeals to pretty much everyone. Charleston can accommodate solo travelers, couples, or even the whole family.

So, when’s the best time to go to Charleston? Is there a best time of year to visit Charleston?

Answer: when to go depends on what you want to see the most.

There is no bad time to visit Charleston; each season has its own events and attractions.

When is high season, shoulder season, and low season in Charleston?

High season.

There are actually TWO “high seasons” in Charleston: March through May and again in September through November.

The first encompasses Easter, azalea blooms, and spring break.

The second is everyone that wants a warm beach vacation without experiencing the intense Southern summers. Don’t be fooled by the time of year; fall is not crisp, cool weather in Charleston.

Shoulder Season

Shoulder season is June through August for Charleston. Not typical shoulder season months. In Charleston’s case, it’s because of the summer heat.

Southern summers are famously hot and humid . I know many a Midwesterner that claims their summers get just as hot, but that’s missing the point.

The temperatures may be similar for a few months, but the duration and accompanying humidity in the South makes everything worse. Trust me, I’ve lived in both regions for over a decade each: Southern summers are worse.

Luckily for Charleston, the city is situated on the coast and enjoys cooling ocean breezes to help alleviate the heat and humidity.

It still gets obnoxiously hot and humid; just not as bad as inland cities with no breezes.

Least Crowded Season

December through February sees the fewest tourists , but I hesitate to call it a low season.

Several large festivals are held during this time, and snowbirds flock to the monthly rentals on Kiawah and Seabrook Islands.

Hurricane Season in Charleston

Another important season to consider when planning a trip to Charleston: Hurricane Season.

June 1 through November 30 is the official time frame for hurricane season in the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, and Gulf of Mexico.

In reality, hurricanes rarely hit in the early or later months of the official hurricane season, and Charleston is geographically less likely to experience hurricanes anyway.

And when they do show up, the city usually gets more warning than a day or two, so you’ll have time to reschedule your travel.

While hurricane season is something to consider, I wouldn’t avoid it like the plague. It’s just not as common a problem here as it is in someplace like Florida or the Gulf Coast states.

Spring in Charleston: March, April, May

Charleston’s first high season is spring, and for good reason.

>>Easter

One of Charleston’s nicknames is the Holy City, thanks to its overzealousness with building churches over the centuries. Partner that with the warmer weather and possibility of blooming flowers, and Easter week becomes one of the busiest and most expensive times to visit Charleston .

If crowds aren’t your thing, then skip this week and come the week before or after.

>>Azalea Season

Azaleas are a big deal in Charleston. Found in every single yard and adorning everything from neighborhood entrances to business parking lots, azaleas are everywhere.

The end of March and beginning of April is mega-bloom time. Dates vary from year to year, but this is always one of the best times to visit Charleston .

The city and surrounding area bursts into bloom. Landscaping turns pink, white, and purple, and there is no escaping it…for about two weeks.

Then, the azaleas are all gone, and we’re left with boring green bushes. But don’t worry, the rest of the flowers stay in bloom for much longer!

It’s a gorgeous time to visit and a photographer’s dream , if you catch peak bloom. The Ashley River Plantations are especially magical to visit during this time.

>>Beaches

Spring also sees the Charleston beaches beginning to wake up. The water is still kind of cold, but warm days make it possible to relax on the beach without a jacket.

Spring breakers (though not as bad as Florida beaches), bachelorette parties, and girls’ trips all start to show up regularly.

Fair Warning : May is technically spring, but in Charleston it feels more like summer.

Summer in Charleston: June, July, August

This is the South, and it gets hot and humid in the summer. It’s unavoidable. But if you can handle the heat, then your reward is shoulder season prices and somewhat smaller crowds .

>>Summer Temperatures

Expect highs in the low 90’s °F and lows never leaving the mid-to-high 70’s °F at night.

Avoid going outside in the middle part of the day when it’s hottest. Instead, go explore one of the many indoor activities Charleston has to offer.

June 1 is the official beginning of hurricane season, but don’t let that get you down. Hurricanes rarely show up in Charleston in June; they are most active in August.

Pro Tip : I wouldn’t not go to Charleston because it’s hurricane season, but I would get travel insurance in case you need to reschedule.

The days preceding a storm can actually be some of the best days for waves if you’re a boogie boarder, and storm clouds are what add that gorgeous deep purple coloring to sunsets .

>>Sea Turtle Nesting & Hatchlings

Loggerhead sea turtles return to Charleston’s beaches every summer to lay their eggs. Hatchlings start to poke their little heads out of the sand in July.

Note that it is illegal to touch or disturb a sea turtle or its nest!

Beware when walking on the beaches in the evenings. Flashlights confuse turtles and discourage them from laying eggs.

Visit Edisto Beach State Park and attend a night walk with a ranger to see the sea turtles and learn more about them.

In summer, the beaches are booming , and beach parking will be at its most expensive and hardest to find, particularly on the weekends.

Charleston has 5 major beaches, none of which are on the downtown peninsula, by the way.

Isle of Palms and Folly Beach are the two most popular beaches, and both have piers as well.

**Note the Folly Beach Pier is being reconstructed. The new pier is scheduled to open in Spring 2023.**

>>Fireworks

Watch fireworks everywhere!

Joe Riley Stadium on the Ashley River side of the downtown peninsula is home to Charleston’s minor league baseball team, the RiverDogs . You can count on them for a fun evening out and Friday Night Fireworks, all season long.

Patriot’s Point hosts the area’s largest fireworks display for the official July 4 th celebration.

If you watch from downtown along the waterfront, you get all the Patriot’s Point fireworks but no music. It’s weird, but free!

Fall in Charleston: September, October, November

Charleston doesn’t see a typical fall season. In fact, it rarely sees fall foliage colors until sometime in November.

You’ll find pumpkin spice everything, but the weather doesn’t match. No crisp, cool evenings until November-ish, and there will still likely be 70°F highs.

The residual warmth is a big reason why this is considered Charleston’s second high season .

>>Bye Bye Hurricanes

Fall is the end of hurricane season. September is still very much summer weather , second only to August for hurricanes, but the pesky storms rarely affect Charleston by October and November.

>>Explore Historic Downtown

October and November weather is perfect for exploring downtown Charleston.

The cooler weather means you won’t be drenched in sweat for walking a block, but it’s warm enough that you won’t need a jacket, either.

Stroll the Battery to see Charleston Harbor, or find the Pineapple Fountain in Waterfront Park. See Rainbow Row. Visit a historic home. Peruse the City Market. Enjoy dinner and drinks at a rooftop restaurant or bar.

Ocean temperatures are still pretty good into the beginning of October, when it starts to cool off. This is the perfect time of year to go to the beach in Charleston without the crowds.

Everyone else in the country is out leaf peeping, so the beaches have little to no crowds.

Winter in Charleston: December, January, February

It’s only fair after the extreme summers that Charleston gets mild winters . Charleston winter temperatures are so mild that a coat heavier than a fleece or hoodie is usually unnecessary.

It doesn’t snow or ice here , so understand that this part of the country is ill-equipped to handle it.

If it does snow, even just a few inches, be prepared for businesses to close or modify hours and watch out for inexperienced drivers. 

>>Flowers in Bloom

Flowers bloom year-round in Charleston. December and January are camellia season , a specialty at Middleton Place Plantation on the Ashley River.

Camellias are found almost as prolifically as the azaleas in the spring. Thankfully, however, camellia blooms last longer than two weeks.

Roses are also seen throughout the winter in Charleston. Stroll through roses in Hampton Park near The Citadel and downtown.

>>Beaches & Snowbirds

Empty beaches can get chilly on a windy day, and then turn around the next day and be perfect t-shirt weather.

Bonus: beach parking is free almost everywhere this time of year.

Snowbirds flock to Kiawah and Seabrook Islands for monthly rentals to escape colder climates. These private islands are their own worlds, and the beaches are completely private.

>>Holidays without the Hassle

While winter is low season, the winter holidays are by no means slow. Christmas, New Year’s, and Valentine’s Day are all popular times to visit Charleston.

Sometimes, you just need to escape the hassle of snow and ice and trade it in for a week in the sun with palmetto trees.

Prices will spike at each holiday, but not as bad as, say, New York City for New Year’s.

Charleston is frequently rated one of the top romantic destinations in the US, and makes a great Valentine’s Day weekend getaway destination. There are plenty of Romantic Things to do in Charleston for every couple.

Spring, specifically mid-March to mid-April. Warm, but not yet hot, temperatures and fewer rainy days make this the sweet spot for weather.

December and January enjoy similar warm temperatures but experience more rainy days. Also, sometimes cold snaps come through, pulling the highs down into the upper 40’s °F and low 50’s °F.

For the Beaches?

If you want to get in the water, summer and early fall are good options for the beaches. Expect crowds.

If you prefer to stay on land and just need warm, sunny weather to sit and read on the beach, spring and late fall/early winter are ideal. Less people and plenty of sunshine!

For Festivals & Events?

Spring is a busy time in Charleston for festivals and events.

For the Best Prices?

Winter, excluding holidays, is considered Charleston’s low season and typically has the best prices for lodging.

Staying in the downtown historic district becomes an option for those with smaller budgets, who would otherwise need to stay in nearby Mount Pleasant or possibly further out in the high seasons.

Most tours do not have seasonal pricing. If they do, it’s often only a $5-$10 reduction. The only exception to this is some of the boat tours and most of the water activities, like SUP or kayaking, do not run in the winter.

Charleston businesses and restaurants are also not seasonal. A steady stream of visitors year-round means most businesses don’t have to close in the low season.

July and August are the hottest months in South Carolina, so be prepared. Wear a hat, light clothing, and sunscreen.

If you prefer a more serene and natural summer trip, head Upstate to the Blue Ridge Mountains to one of the beautiful state parks. Here you can camp, hike, rent a cozy cabin, explore cascading waterfalls, and test your paddle skills with some white-water rafting. Fall colors are breathtaking all over the state. Daytime temperatures are comfortably cooler – as in 70 degrees – so some sightseeing, hiking, pumpkin-gathering, apple picking, and corn maze exploration are just suitable for family outings.

The Blue Ridge Mountains’ scenic lookouts may offer the most enthralling views of fall’s colorful foliage palette. 

Looking for some Lowcountry charm for two? Stay in one of Beaufort’s romantic hotels or inns. Spend the days and evenings shopping and exploring the town’s historic district. If you are there in early October, you can enjoy the fun and food at Beaufort’s Annual Shrimp Festival. 

Winter 

Skiing, sledding, and snowboarding are popular Upstate in the Blue Ridge Mountains because it snows there. But, of course, some folks find a cozy cabin with a crackling fire and some hot chocolate to be the best way to relax when it’s cold outside. But you can have it all!

The Lowcountry towns and cities are likely to be enjoying winter temperatures in the 40s and 50s range. January and February are the coldest months in South Carolina, but they are warmer than other state winters. So take a jacket and be prepared for whatever comes as you explore the quaint seaside towns. 

December is a time of festivals and seasonal holiday treats. The kids will love it!

Local travel tips for South Carolina

Make sure you research any area you plan to visit before arriving. Your GPS might not help you much if you’re driving somewhere unfamiliar. Check out a map for accurate directions and helpful features like gas stations, lodging options, museums, etc.

Check on road closures before heading out and always stay within the posted speed limit. It’s wise to avoid heavy traffic areas during rush hours.

When visiting South Carolina, make sure you bring comfortable shoes. With so many trails, parks and city cultural offerings you’ll spend your day walking around to experience it all.

Bring cash when you travel. You never know when you’ll run into a store that doesn’t accept credit cards. Also, keep an eye out for ATMs when you’re out and about, especially in rural locations.

Plan Ahead: When planning to travel to South Carolina, here are some things to consider:

• Check out the weather before heading out.
• Pack plenty of snacks.
• Know how much money you will spend on lodging/entertainment/food.
• Be aware of any special events taking place during your stay.

We want to have a relaxing trip and spend a lot of time relaxing by the pool/on a beach.

We are considering early August, Labor Day weekend, or later in September (although I worry the last might be too chilly?)

For those who have been, when do you feel the best time to visit Charleston is?

Stay away in august through mid September, late September all through mid October should be perfect. Some will say that high tropical storm season, but we had rather suffer a slight chance of a storm vs a 100% chance of miserable heat! And yes still beach/pool weather.

By far anytime in September or October. The ocean water is still very warm, humidity has dropped off (moreso in Late September and later), the daytime is perfect beach weather and the sunsets are insanely beautiful.

Unless there is some very weird cold snap, the fall is usually very warm.

Sullivans Island is one of my favorite beaches in the world.

I agree with the posters, SI’s beach is superior.

I’ll add another tip, our traffic is horrid at the beaches & downtown from April to Labour Day, add a holiday wkd and you might not even get to the beach!

Myrtle Beach is a great place to visit any time of year, but some seasons are better for certain things. Here's a list of when to go for whatever kind of vacation you prefer © Brandon Zack / EyeEm/Getty

Myrtle Beach’s 60 miles of coastline attracts large crowds during the summer months. Things calm down in the fall when festival season kicks off and the weather cools down for the golfers.

Here are our picks for the best time to go to Myrtle Beach. 

High Season: June to August

Best time for the beach and concerts July and August are the busiest months, but crowds thin out in late August. All seasonal attractions are running, along with several concert series including Hot Summer Nights and Sounds of Summer Concert Series . In terms of other festivals, this is a quiet time, as most visitors are here just to soak up the sun on the beach. Keep in mind that hurricane season officially starts on June 1st and runs through the end of November with a higher risk starting in late August. 

Shoulder Season: March to May; September to October

Best time for golf and festivals The best part about shoulder season is the lack of crowds at most attractions and shows, and shorter wait times at restaurants. March to May is great for golf due to cooler temperatures, but green fees for golfers trend higher. Fall is festival season with plenty of sun and summer-like temperatures. The ocean remains warm enough to swim through October.

Low Season: November to February

Best time for budget travelers Hotel and resort rates are the lowest of the year with great deals on oceanfront rooms. While some attractions are closed, holiday events and shows kick off in early November and run through the first weekend in January.

The cold weather keeps most people away, resulting in the cheapest hotel rates of the year and no crowds. There are no major events except for Restaurant Week South Carolina . While many attractions are closed, it’s one of the cheapest times to play golf.

While the crowds are still sparse, the room rates start to increase a bit despite the cold weather. Many theaters remain closed for the month but golf season is starting to kick off. There are no big events or festivals during February as Myrtle Beach gears up for spring.

As Spring Break season kicks off, college students pack the beaches looking for a party. Many seasonal attractions and restaurants start to reopen. Golf season is in full swing. 

Key Events: Can-Am Days Festival,  Myrtle Beach Marathon

April is filled with warm days and cool nights. Tees times and green fees can be more expensive but accommodation rates are lower than high season. Since Spring Break for K-12 schools falls around Easter, it is a popular time for families to visit.

Key Events: Myrtle Beach International Film Festival, Dragon Boat Festival, Horry County Fair

Early May is typically warm and less crowded. The spring motorcycle rallies start the second week of May and continue through Memorial Day when the crowds and hotel rates start to increase. 

Key Events: World Famous Blue Crab Festival, Atlantic Bike Week, Spring bike rally 

Early June brings in families and a flood of recent high school and college graduates looking to celebrate. The heat and crowds increase dramatically during the month. Even though hurricane season officially kicks off on June, it’s still a good time to visit. Waterparks, watersports and  amusement parks are all open.

Key Events: Carolina Country Music Fest, Conway Riverfest, Sounds of Summer Concert Series, Hot Summer Nights

The crowds and hotel rates increase in July. All attractions are open but expect to wait in lines everywhere. There are a variety of July 4th events and several outdoor concert series.

Unlike the heat and humidity, the crowds start to shrink in late August as school starts back. Check the weather before you visit – the chance for hurricanes starts to peak at the end of the month.

After Labor Day, the crowds decrease significantly making it easy to spread out on the beach and avoid traffic. The weather and water are warm and most attractions are still open. This is the second busiest golf season so expect higher prices.

The summer humidity and high season rates disappear by October.  While nighttime temperatures will start to dip, the ocean is warm enough for swimming. Another bonus is the risk for hurricanes decreases dramatically near the end of the month.  

Key Events: Little River ShrimpFest, Loris Bog-Off Festival, Myrtle Beach Jazz Festival

Hotel rates are significantly discounted in November. Holiday attractions and shows kick off at the beginning of the month. Most importantly, it’s the end of hurricane season.

While December weather is normally chilly, there can still be a few warm days. Holiday shopping and events are in full swing.

The Best Time to Visit Congaree National Park

W hat’s the best time to visit Congaree National Park? That’s a question I hear often, so I’m breaking down the pros and cons of each season in this southern destination.

This often overlooked national park just south of Columbia, South Carolina, is actually a treasure trove of wildlife, champion trees, and pristine natural experiences.

We live less than 45 minutes from Congaree, so my family and I consider it our home park. We can be found there throughout the year hiking, camping, attending ranger programs, and working towards (another) Junior Ranger badge.

Below, you’ll find what to do at Congaree National Park in each season, as well as what to expect from the weather, crowd levels, and camping areas.

Perhaps more than any other park in the southeast, Congaree changes by the month, and sometimes by the day.

Whether you visit once or again and again, there’s always something new to discover in this sprawling patch of protected hardwoods and cypress swamp.

Congaree National Park: Pros and Cons of Each Season

To some people, Congaree is just a boring forest. I’ve even heard people describe Congaree as “disappointing” and “something that shouldn’t be a national park.”

Poor Congaree. It’s HIGHLY underappreciated in my view, and it has something to offer visitors in every season. (Even if that “something” is mostly bugs in the summer. Ha.)

Since we live so close to the park, we have the unique opportunity to explore it from January to December. I promise: the park has so much more than boring trees.

Though, honestly, trees are pretty interesting—especially these trees.

Did you know that Congaree National Park is home to some of the tallest trees on the entire East Coast? You’d have to go to California’s redwood forests to top the champion trees in South Carolina.

Plus, there’s hiking, boating, and camping in the heart of South Carolina. In fact, I think it’s one of the best national parks on the East Coast .

Let’s dive into what you should expect in Congaree in each season.

Congaree National Park in the Winter

While I might think I’m freezing to death in February, our winter weather isn’t bad compared to what the North and Midwest go through.

We will have the occasional hard freeze, but that’s the exception rather than the rule. The winter weather fluctuates wildly from year to year, so you’ll want to watch your weather app in the days leading up to your Congaree visit.

Our winters also tend to be dry until late February, which is when we begin to see more rain leading into spring.

Ultimately, the winter season is the best time of the year to get outside here in South Carolina as the average day time temperatures are perfect for hikes and wildlife viewing.

What to do here in december, january, and february.

The best part of visiting during the winter is the fact that you’ll have the park to yourself! (See the section about crowd levels below.)

There are still ranger programs offered throughout the colder months, though they aren’t provided as frequently as busier times of the year.

Since South Carolina’s winter are pretty mild compared to other areas of the country, our wildlife stays fairly active year round.

The winter months are great times to take a kayaking or canoe trip, either on your own or with a guided group. Carolina Outdoor Adventures runs small group kayaking tours through the cypress swamp year-round.

NOTE: The Congaree River can and will flood during the late winter and early spring. Sometimes, this process will cover large areas of the Congaree flood plain, in which the national park resides.

Check the weather before you’re visiting between late February and April—if there’s been heavy rain, call the park to see what the flood levels are like.

This flooding is a natural part of the ecosystem here and helps to keep the forest and its inhabitants healthy. However, the most severe flooding can interrupt your park visit if the boardwalk is flooded in sections.

Expected Winter Crowd Levels

Congaree National Park has turned into a popular location for the First Day Hike on New Year’s Day.

We did the boardwalk hike to kick off our year last year, and we passed more than a dozen other parties on the 2.5 mile loop.

However, if you can wait just a day or two, you’ll have the park to yourself as the winter months see the lowest crowds in this national park.

Part of that is due to winter being the low tourism season in all of South Carolina, and part of it is that the weather isn’t the most consistent at this time of the year.

Winter Camping Pros and Cons

While the days are pleasant, the nights can get downright chilly.

You’ll be able to have your pick of camping spots at either the Bluff or Longleaf campgrounds. If you’re seeking some solitude in a national park, you’re unlikely to have many neighbors this time of the year.

Keep in mind that Bluff campground is a hike-in—it’s a little over a mile from the campers’ parking lot. If the weather does turn bad or the temperatures drop unexpectedly, you might have a wet, cold hike back to your car.

The Longleaf Campground is much more convenient with sites just a few dozen feet from the parking area.

However, in both campgrounds, you won’t have any electric hookups. If you’re cold-natured like me, you’ll need to work overtime with clothing, blankets, and tea on the Bunsen burner to stay warm.

Since we live so close to Congaree, we often find ourselves heading up there when we know the crowds are low. It’s SO serene in the campgrounds in the winter, even on the weekends.

Plus, there are no bugs this time of year. That alone is worth making plans to winter camp here.

If you can brave the colder nights, this is an excellent time to go camping at Congaree.

Congaree National Park in the Spring

The South Carolina midlands are quite pleasant during the spring as the temperatures begin to quickly warm up in March, April, and May.

Expect more consistent humidity and warmer temperatures this time of the year, though they’re still nothing close to being what they are in the summer.

The daytime temperatures are beautiful in March and early April, though they’ll begin to get uncomfortable for some visitors by late May.

What to do here in march, april, and may.

The most exciting thing that happens in the spring months is the Congaree firefly lottery .

For a week or two in late spring, the pine forest explodes with the lights of these incredible insects, who come here to mate.

If you’re visiting during that year’s firefly viewing window, plan ahead to enter the lottery.

There is a small fee associated with visiting if you get a lottery pass, but this is to provide the more than 15,000 visitors to this event with special flashlights on the trail.

I’ve tried for multiple years, but haven’t been lucky enough to nab a spot. I hope you have better luck!

This is also the time to talk about the park’s infamous Mosquito Meter, which holds a place of honor in the visitors center breezeway.

The meter is adjusted throughout the year to indicate the level of bug population that’s present in the park at any given time. A 0 on the meter means you don’t need any bug spray, while a 10 means you probably need to take cover inside.

During the winter and early spring, you’re likely to see the meter somewhere between a 0 and 4. Generally, the cooler the weather, the fewer bugs you’ll find here.

This is also why visiting during the winter and spring is recommended!

Keep in mind that the spring is the time when the Congaree River is most likely to flood. While the flooding intensity changes from year to year, the worst flooding can completely cover the Boardwalk Trail, Oak Ridge Trail, King Snake Trail, and other low lying areas in the backcountry.

Call ahead or check the official NPS site for Congaree National Park to see what the flooding forecast is during your visit.

The spring is a great time to go camping (see more notes on spring camping below).

Expected Spring Crowd Levels

Crowds begin to pick up this time of the year as families stop by during spring breaks in March and April.

If you’d like to have a quieter experience during this time of the year, arrive early or go on a weekday.

Even at its peak times, the park isn’t going to be super busy, though you will likely pass several groups if you’re doing the Boardwalk Trail.

Spring Camping Pros and Cons

Even if the lower lying areas of the park are flooded out, you’ll still be able to utilize sites at both campgrounds as these are on the other side of the park from the flood plain.

Spring is one of my favorite times of the year to go camping in South Carolina because the weather is warm during the day, the nights are crisp, and the bugs aren’t out in full force.

While you won’t have too much competition for the campsites in spring, you are going to see higher crowd levels here than in the winter.

The campgrounds are popular locations for outdoor enthusiasts for spring break, so book head if you’re planning to visit in mid-March to mid-April.

Congaree National Park in the Summer

There’s a saying around here: the Devil owns two houses, one in Columbia and one in Hell. And in the summer, he goes to the one in Hell.

That should give you an indication of how stifling things can get in the Midlands in the mid- to late summer.

I’m not going to tell you not to come here during the summer, but I’m also not going to encourage you to do so.

Summers inland in South Carolina have 100% humidity, making those average temperatures in the 90s have a real feel of well over 100 degrees.

If you stop by between June and August, hike early or late, drink water constantly, and stay in the shade as much as possible.

What to do here in june, july, and august.

If I had to pick a time of the year that wasn’t the best time to visit Congaree National Park, the summer would be it.

You’re going to be hot. There are going to be lots of people. And there are going to be even more bugs everywhere—and they act immune to bug spray.

If you do visit during this time of the year, I highly encourage you to hike from dawn to no later than 10 AM. After that, the bugs, heat, and humidity are going to make this a pretty miserable experience.

On the plus side, the summer is when the wildlife is the most active, so you’ll see everything from owls to white tailed deer and their fawns. The park’s cold blooded residents are also active the most during the summer, so keep looking for copperheads, water moccasins, rat snakes, and corn snakes.

The summer months are a good time to hang out in the visitors center, watch the park’s 15-minute intro video, and check out the displays.

The most popular trails are going to be crowded mid-day, so go early or stay late.

If you can, try out the backcountry/wilderness trails as these are less likely to be heavily trafficked. Take lots of bug spray and water, and be careful of stepping on or disturbing any wildlife.

Expected Summer Crowd Levels

Like just about everywhere with family friendly offerings, Congaree National Park sees peak crowds in the summer when families are on vacation together.

There are 2 nearby lakes—Moultrie and Marion—that bring in summer crowds for fishing and camping, and those visitors often wander over to Congaree for the day.

Those kids and their families are going to get overheated and cranky, so pack your patience.

Summer Camping Pros and Cons

The pro of camping during the summer at Congaree is that the nights are actually warm enough for me to enjoy sleeping outside. But then again, I’m always cold.

My husband finds this time of the year too warm to comfortably camp outside, even in our lightest sleeping bags. So, you mileage may vary.

The cons, however, are going to outweigh your pros here. There are bugs (did I mention that yet?) and they don’t go away when the evenings cool down.

You’ll have your typical mosquitoes with biting midges that love this time of the year. They are resistant to most bug spray, so you’re just sitting there in misery while they feast.

The campgrounds are more crowded this time of the year, too, so you’ll need to book ahead to get the spot in your preferred campground, especially over the Memorial Day, July 4th, or Labor Day holidays.

I know I’m really selling a summer visit to Congaree, but, honestly, this park is so much nicer other times of the year.

While September can often be quite warm, October is one of my favorite months in South Carolina.

October days are beautiful and breezy, while the nights are perfect for hanging around a campfire.

November begins just as nice, though things turn cooler by Thanksgiving.

This time of the year is also the driest, so you’re unlikely to have any areas of the park flooded out. (It’s still a good idea to check before you go, though.)

Congaree National Park Fall Avg. Temperatures

What to do here in september, october, and november.

As the temperatures cool down, so do the bugs, making the late fall a great time to explore some of the backcountry of the park.

It’s also a good time to hike on the 2 short trails at the far east end of the park, which has a separate entrance from the one where the visitors center is. Bates Ferry Trail and Fork Swamp Trail are along the Bates Old River and should be low traffic this time of the year.

The leaves won’t start to change until mid-November, so you can squeeze in some late season leaf peeping.

The forest here has a mixture of evergreen trees like loblolly pines and deciduous trees like the bald cypress.

Head out onto one of the less busy trails like the River Trail or Oak Ridge Trail to maximize your leaf peeping opportunities.

Expected Fall Crowd Levels

This time of the year will still see steady traffic, but, much like spring, those levels are back at manageable levels.

The fall is a great time to visit Congaree since the visitors center is fully staffed but you don’t have to fight crowds of day trippers from Columbia and Santee.

Again, the further away from the visitors center you get, the more likely you are to find some solitude.

Fall Camping Pros and Cons

The bugs are slowly disappearing, and the weather is beautiful. Sounds like a great time to go camping in the middle of South Carolina!

I love camping here in October and early November because of the changing leaves, campfire-ready weather, and lower humidity.

You will see more campsites in both Longleaf and Bluff campgrounds become available in the fall as families have to focus more on their work, school, and activities schedules.

But if you can get away for a weekend, you’re likely to make some great family memories here around the campfire.

The best time to visit Congaree National Park is the fall, specifically October and early November. You’ll find low crowds, beautiful fall foliage, and active wildlife without many bugs.

Plus, the weather is mild during the day and perfect for a campfire at night.

Since the fall is the driest time in this part of South Carolina, the park is unlikely to have any flooding issues.

The second best time to visit would be in the winter as the cool temperatures mean you won’t have to deal with bugs or busy trails.

Travelers Rest prides itself on its artsy vibe, active culture, historic charm, and a strong sense of community among residents, who will make visitors feel like family as well. Bikers fill the town’s streets and paths due to its well-structured biking trails. Prisma Health Swamp Rabbit Trail is a great option for visitors wanting to go on a biking adventure, featuring a 23-mile trail that connects Travelers Rest to nearby Greenville. In the heart of the town, visitors will find an impressive variety of boutiques, antique shops, delicious restaurants, and more. Stop by for a drink at The Tasting Room, which has a diverse selection of wines and craft beers, as well as scheduled live music.

The nearby Table Rock State Park offers hikers a trip out to natural paradise due to its breathtaking views from mountain tops and trails leading to mountain streams and waterfalls.

Just 13 miles from Rock Hill lies York , a historic town filled with southern charm. Continue exploring the town’s charm by visiting Yorkville Marketplace, a boutique mall with over 30 vendors, which sometimes even hosts festivals, pop-up events, and shows!

For families, York City Park is a scenic public park with a splash pad for kids, picnic areas, and a walking trail loop. Bush and Vine Farm is another charming outdoor location that people of all ages will enjoy, which even includes the opportunity to pick berries or other fruits and vegetables! In the heart of the scenic midlands sits the underrated town of Newberry, full of history and South Carolinian culture. Visiting the old-fashioned town center will feel like a trip back in time, where entire blocks have buildings on the National Registry of Historic Places. Notable historic buildings include the Newberry Opera House, the Newberry Arts Center, and the Newberry Museum, which exhibits treasures of the town’s history.
