Your guide to the best Adelaide gay bars, LGBT venues and events

Being the state capital and largest city in south australia, adelaide’s gay bars are some of the best in the country.

The LGBTQ+ community works Adelaide’s size to an advantage, with queer nightclubs and the best gay bars in Adelaide, you’ll find most venues concentrated in the CBD (Central Business District). The CBD hosts pubs and gay clubs that welcome a mix of locals and guests, and LGBTQ+ folks and allies. Fun note, South Australia was the country’s first state to decriminalize same-gender sexual activity!

Aussie coffee culture means you’ll find delightful cafés to complement sit-down restaurants, and the Lucky Country’s latitude gives Adelaide a Mediterranean climate, so look forward to world-class wineries! Year-round, wine connoisseurs visiting the state will want to venture northeast from Adelaide to Barossa Valley , which boasts some of Australia’s best vineyards. Adelaide itself is home to the National Wine Centre , located on Botanic Road in the northwest corner of the CBD. After you get done with all the wine tastings, try out the best gay bars in Adelaide to keep the night going!

Make sure to check out the nearby Adelaide Botanical Gardens , home to rainforest species and rare tropical foliage that will impress families and solo travelers alike. The Art Gallery of South Australia , housing over 35,000 amazing works from around the world, is just west of the Botanical Gardens. Rail fans should make whistle stops at the National Railway Museum and the Tramway Museum north of the CBD, near St Kilda .

That mild Mediterranean climate means that beautiful beaches abound in Adelaide! Detour 28 mi / 45 km south of the city to Maslin Beach , and head to the south part of the beach itself. You’ll find a community-friendly oceanside hangout—bathing suits aren’t required, but a chilled-out attitude is!

When the Southern Hemisphere heats up in November, attend the Feast Festival , Australia’s second-biggest LGBTQ+ event, and Pride March Adelaide . After Pride Adelaide, the best gay events will be happening around town at all the LGBTQ+ bars and clubs.

If you want a good-sized and progressive-minded city with a scene that’s cozy and enthusiastic, offering amazing queer bars and clubs, Adelaide’s the place for you!

History Of LGBT Rights In Australia

The history of LGBT rights in Australia has seen significant progress over the years. In the past, all jurisdictions of the newly federated Commonwealth considered male homosexuality as a criminal act. However, between 1975 and 1997, states and territories repealed anti-homosexuality laws that originated during the colonial era. Nowadays, each jurisdiction maintains an equal age of consent for all sexual acts.

Over the past 50 years, LGBT rights activism in Australia transformed from small, localized organizations into nationwide campaigns urging all Australians to support equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex (LGBTI) individuals. As the cause gathered momentum, the community’s issues and activist strategies evolved.

When it comes to protecting locals and tourists, stay informed about the current situation and seek updated advice before traveling, as situations can change quickly. Additionally, always remain vigilant, as there may be bad actors present who could jeopardize safety.

For those visiting main cities like Sydney and Melbourne, the LGBT community enjoys significant acceptance and legal protection. However, it’s essential to remember that the level of tolerance and acceptance can vary between urban centers and rural areas.

Several LGBT advocacy groups in Australia work tirelessly to promote rights and protection for the community. Engaging with these groups is highly recommended for up-to-date information on the local LGBT situations. Rely on their expertise and learn about suitable safe spaces and events throughout the country.

In summary, the history of LGBT rights in Australia has come a long way, but always stay aware of the current situation, engage with local advocacy groups, and practice caution when necessary.

Gay Australia - LBGT Australia - Queer Australia Travel Guide

The LGBT Legal Situation In Australia

Australia has come a long way in terms of LGBT rights, with significant progress made over the past few decades. As of now, homosexuality is legal, same-sex marriage has been legalized since December 9, 2017, and all jurisdictions have abolished the gay panic defense since April 1, 2021.

Local people and tourists alike can enjoy these rights in Australia’s major cities, including Sydney , Melbourne , Brisbane , and other urban areas. Despite the overall positive progress, it’s always crucial to remain vigilant as situations can change, and there may be bad actors present in any country.

Some steps that can be taken to protect oneself and ensure a safe visit include:

  • Staying informed about current local laws and customs related to LGBT rights.
  • Keeping track of the regional variations in legal protections for changing gender and non-binary gender recognition.
  • Connecting with local LGBT advocacy groups for up-to-date information and support.

Remember, the legal situation can change quickly, and information may be out-of-date. Always seek current advice before traveling to Australia or any other destination.

In terms of promoting and protecting LGBT rights, Australia has various organizations and advocacy groups, such as the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras and Australian Marriage Equality . These groups work tirelessly to address concerns, promote acceptance, and strive for positive change within society. Connecting with these organizations can provide valuable information and guidance for both locals and tourists visiting the country.

The legal situation in Australia regarding LGBT rights has significantly improved over the years, contributing to a more inclusive and accepting society. While being excited about these advancements is natural, always remember that situations can change quickly, and staying informed is crucial to ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.

Gay Australia - LBGT Australia - Queer Australia Travel Guide

The LGBT Social Situation In Australia

The social landscape for LGBT rights in Australia has progressed immensely in recent years, with the 2017 legalization of same-sex marriage as a significant milestone. Excitingly, cities like Sydney and Melbourne boast vibrant LGBT communities and are generally welcoming to both locals and tourists. However, it is worth remembering that situations can change rapidly, and it’s vital to stay informed, as discrimination or harassment can still occur in some areas.

LGBT travelers should remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety. Familiarizing oneself with local laws and current events is crucial before traveling, as information can quickly become outdated. Staying connected with LGBT advocacy groups within the country, such as the National LGBTI Health Alliance and the Australian Human Rights Commission , can help provide support and up-to-date advice.

In most major cities like Brisbane and Adelaide , you will find a positive and supportive environment for the LGBT community, but it’s essential to remain cautious, as bad actors exist everywhere. Some steps you can take to protect yourself include researching areas with a higher concentration of LGBT-friendly establishments, avoiding public displays of affection if it’s deemed unsafe, and knowing the contact information for local Australian emergency services.

Despite the vast improvements in LGBT rights and equality in Australia, it’s crucial to remain vigilant and stay informed about current situations. By seeking advice from advocacy groups, staying up-to-date with local news, and exercising caution in unfamiliar areas, you can help ensure a safe and enjoyable experience as an LGBT individual in Australia.

Gay Australia - LBGT Australia - Queer Australia Travel Guide

Trans Rights In Australia

Transgender rights in Australia have seen progress in recent years; however, challenges and discrimination still exist. The experiences of local transgender Australians and LGBTQ+ tourists may differ, but as a vibrant and welcoming country, Australia has many places where the community can feel at home.

In major cities such as Sydney and Melbourne, there are dedicated safe spaces, events, and services for transgender individuals. However, it is crucial for everyone to remain vigilant, as situations can change rapidly, and there are outliers in every country. Information can be outdated, so it is advisable to seek current advice before traveling.

LGBTQ+ advocacy groups, such as the Australian Human Rights Commission, tirelessly work toward increasing legal protections and promoting trans rights. They are an excellent resource for up-to-date information on your rights and protections.

Despite the progress made, there is still work to be done to improve legal protections nationwide. In some states, such as Victoria, South Australia, and Western Australia, there are currently no laws protecting LGBTQ+ individuals from vilification. Advocacy groups continue to push for stronger legal protections across the country.

If you’re visiting or living in Australia, being aware of your rights is vital. Be cautious of your surroundings, especially in areas with limited legal protections for LGBTQ+ individuals. Connect with local LGBTQ+ groups and resources to stay informed and find support if necessary. Remember, situations can change quickly, and it’s essential to remain aware and alert.

In conclusion, while transgender rights have come a long way in Australia, there’s still progress to be made. By staying informed, vigilant, and connected, both locals and tourists can navigate the country confidently and excitedly.

Trans Rights In Australia

The Future For The Queer Community In Australia

The future of LGBTQIA+ rights in Australia looks bright as the country continues to make progress in fostering a more inclusive and accepting society. Australia has become one of the most accepting societies globally when it comes to queer people, with significant advancements in recent years, such as reducing the celibacy requirements for blood donations from LGBTQIA+ individuals.

Despite this promising outlook, it is essential for both locals and tourists alike to remain vigilant and cautious, as the situation can change quickly, and there may be bad actors in every country. Always ensure that you seek current information and advice before traveling, particularly if you plan to visit smaller cities or rural areas where attitudes may differ from those in major cities like Sydney and Melbourne.

To better protect yourself and support the LGBTQIA+ community, consider connecting with local advocacy groups such as Equality Australia and the National LGBTI Health Alliance. These organizations work tirelessly to promote equal rights across Australia and often provide valuable resources, support, and advice to both citizens and visitors.

While Australian cities such as Brisbane, Adelaide, and Perth are becoming increasingly welcoming to LGBTQIA+ individuals, it’s crucial to stay informed about local laws and attitudes. Additionally, always prioritize your safety and well-being by staying alert, researching destinations and venues before visiting, and using common sense, especially when traveling through unfamiliar regions.

The journey towards a more welcoming future in Australia for the LGBTQIA+ community remains ongoing, with local advocacy groups continuously striving for positive change. By staying informed, exercising caution, and supporting these organizations, both locals and tourists can contribute to a lively and inclusive Australian society that celebrates diversity in all its forms.

Protect Yourself While Travelling In Gay Australia

Australia has come a long way in terms of LGBT rights, and the local community, as well as tourists, can feel generally excited and optimistic about the situation. However, it’s essential to remain vigilant and aware of your surroundings, as the situation can change fast, and there may be bad actors in any country.

In recent years, Australia has implemented laws that protect LGBT individuals against discrimination, such as the amendment to the Sex Discrimination Act in 2013. This provides a solid legal framework for individuals who face any form of discrimination based on their sexual orientation, gender identity, intersex status, or relationship status.

Visitors and residents of major cities like Sydney and Melbourne can find many LGBT-friendly establishments and neighborhoods. These cities are known for their vibrant LGBT scenes and proudly celebrate events like the Sydney Mardi Gras, drawing thousands of international tourists each year.

As an individual looking to protect yourself and enjoy your time in Australia to the fullest, here are a few recommendations:

  • Stay informed about the local laws and customs, keeping an eye on any legal changes or significant events that could impact the LGBT community.
  • Reach out to LGBT advocacy groups in Australia, such as the Australian Human Rights Commission and Amnesty International Australia. They can provide valuable resources and information on the rights and protections available to the LGBT community.
  • Be mindful of cultural differences between urban and rural areas. While larger cities tend to be more progressive, rural areas might hold more conservative views. Exercise caution and be respectful of local customs.
  • Always trust your instincts. If a situation feels uncomfortable or unsafe, remove yourself from it and seek assistance if needed.

Remember, the information in this article is subject to change, and it’s crucial to seek current advice before traveling. Stay safe, and enjoy your time in Australia!

Port Lincoln, Australia gay tour

Day 10 - Tuesday, February 25, 2025 Adelaide – Port Lincoln After breakfast, transfer to Adelaide Airport. Take to the air, soaring westwards to the Eyre Peninsula and Port Lincoln, the seafood capital of Australia.

Our local specialist will greet us at the airport to start the adventure. First on the agenda is Winters Hill, from this vantage point you gain a 360’ degree view of the city of Port Lincoln, Boston Island, Boston Bay and all the way out to the stunning Port Lincoln National Park, then spin 180’degree and you can view the vista to Coffin Bay, Marble Ranges and the west coast of Eyre Peninsula, a superb photo opportunity.

Lunch is at French café L’Anse. Named for the French word ‘cove’ or ‘bay’, it was established through a vision from Marvin & Grace wanting to bring accessible fine dining, delicious coffee and French style pastries to the Eyre Peninsula.

After lunch, we take you out to beautiful Mikkira Station, arguably one of Australia’s very best habitats where Koalas can be found in the wild. Visit the restored original homestead and go for a stroll under the beautiful old Eucalypt trees and come face to face with the cuddly icon of Australia as they laze in the Manna gums. Due to the gums being stunted your view to the koala is at eye level and you will need more than 2 hands to keep count, maybe even 4! Wild but placid kangaroos casually hop around in this beautiful historical setting, where in 1842 Scotsman Adam Borthwick and his family made their home as one of the very first settlers of the region. Emus roam around and there is astounding birdlife here, some of which are rare and native to this area.

As the sun sets, we will relax with a platter of local produce, wine and listen to the sounds of nature. It’s beautiful!

From here we take a short drive back to Port Lincoln and the Port Lincoln Hotel, your accommodation for the next couple of nights. Here you’re free to explore and dine independently this evening.

Meals: Breakfast & Lunch Hotel: The Port Lincoln Hotel , Port Lincoln, 4*

Day 11 - Wednesday, February 26, 2025 Port Lincoln Today you are in for a special treat full of wild encounters in some of the most beautiful places in South Australia, when we take an unforgettable cruise through the crystal clear waters around Port Lincoln. At Hopkins Island you have the opportunity of swimming with the rare and endangered Australian sea lion in its natural underwater habitat – one of life’s most memorable experiences. The cruise also takes you around the shores of the Port Lincoln National Park and the cliffs of the Memory Cove wilderness sanctuary. This pristine stretch of coastline is best seen by boat with stunning scenery and sightings of bottlenose dolphins, white bellied sea eagles and fur seals.

After arriving back into the marina we head off to a mini masterclass experience with Gav Myers. You will learn about the seafood industry from a local seafood producer and exporter. This experience will be unusual as you will be tasting seafood that is unique to this region and not always available on menus. Learn about the versatility of the fresh seafood while you are enjoying an exclusive mini-masterclass for lunch in an authentic setting.

His artwork comes in the forms of busts, full figures, animals, humans and abstract. We meet Ken at his famous Port Lincoln statues Makybe Diva & the Tuna Poler on the foreshore of Port Lincoln. Ken has completed many private works and exhibitions all over the world and some of his commission works include famous people such as Jason Gillespie, Barry Robran MBE, Darren Lehman and Dr Robin Warren AC Nobel Laureate.

After your caffeine hit, you are driven to Coffin Bay on the western side of the peninsula, an area of outstanding beauty, home to world famous oysters and a variety of important species of flora and fauna. There are no other comparable systems of bays and inlets in such compact form anywhere on the coast, justifying the area’s classification as a maritime wilderness area.

First time? Here is what to expect

firsttime1new

First time visit

Welcome to Pulteney 431, Adelaide’s first and only gay sauna. We understand your first visit can be rather daunting and overwhelming, that you may feel nervous about venturing into the unknown. Therefore, we would like to give you some guidance as to what you can expect.

When you arrive at 431 you will be greeted by a team member who will establish if you are a first-time visitor, that you are over the age of 18 (ID may be requested) and make you aware that this is a gay friendly venue. You will be invited inside to pay an entry fee, and be provided with a locker and towel. You will then have the facilities explained to you and be directed to the change/locker room. Most guys store their clothing and belongings in the locker and wrap the towel around themselves and proceed to the wet areas. It’s important you make sure your locker is closed and locked before leaving the change room and you wear the locker key around your wrist or ankle. You can also choose to wear swimwear or underwear (jockstraps are popular). You may find some guys are happy going naked, it’s a matter of personal choice.

All visitors using the facilities are encouraged to shower first in consideration of others. In the wet-area there are toilets and communal showers available. The dry sauna is located to the left of the pool and the steam room to the right. Access to the courtyard garden is also to the left where there is an outdoor smoking area.

When you feel relaxed and ready please feel free to check out our lounges and cafe and venture upstairs to our other areas.

What to expect

Patrons of the club are usually friendly and social but some are just keen to have a sexual encounter. As you explore the club you may be approached by other guys, and it is quite acceptable to indicate that if you are not interested, say so in a polite but firm manner. Just say, ‘thanks but not today’. Consent is essential and “no means no”.

Should you wish to engage remember your safe sex practices, and free condoms and lube are available in all cruising areas. We encourage guys to look after their sexual health and encourage the use of safe sex practices and PrEP. From time to time volunteers from SAMESH are available on-site to assist with advice on sex and sexual health issues. We also have a Connect Project vending machine on site that dispenses free and anonymous HIV test kits.

Fresh towels and shampoo are available on request from the reception desk.

If you are feeling a bit peckish or thirsty and wish to purchase items from the cafe simply show your locker key to the attendant and it will be charged to your key. Payment is made on your departure.

When you are ready to leave simply return to the locker room, dress and collect your belongings. Please make sure your locker is empty and locked before returning to the desk with your key and towel. Baskets are provided at the desk for your used towel. Once the attendant has checked if you need to settle any purchases the exit door will be released for your departure.

We hope this introduction has given you an insight into how ‘431’ operates and that you are equipped to have an enjoyable experience. Should you have any questions during your visit please do not hesitate to ask the team member on duty.

Pope’s one word gay slur sparks fury

The Vatican has issued an extraordinary statement after Pope Francis was accused of using an offensive gay slang word.

Pope Francis, who had been regarded as being more respectful than his predecessors toward LGBTI people, has apologised after using a homophobic slur.

The Head of the Catholic Church used an offensive gay slang word during a meeting with Italian bishops, where he is said to have joked about the number of gay men in seminaries, according to media reports.

Italian newspapers reported that during a private meeting at the Italian Bishops’ Conference on May 20, the 87-year-old pontiff used the derogatory Roman term “frociaggine”. That approxomately translates as the offensive English words “f*ggots” or “p**fs”.

The Pope’s comments were said to be a response to proposals to allow openly gay men to join seminaries, priest training colleges, which have explicitly banned gay men from applying since 2005.

Francis reportedly said people of all sexualities should be respected but openly gay men should not be admitted.

He then allegedly added that there were “already too many ‘frociaggine’” in some seminaries.

Pope’s apology

The La Repubblica and Corriere della Sera newspapers, which first reported the comments, said that the Pope did not realise how offensive the word was as the Argentine pontiff’s first language is Spanish.

It was reported that the Pope's’ comments were met with “incredulous laughter”.

On Tuesday, the Vatican issued a statement apologising for the furore which comes just days before Pride Month kicks off.

Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said Francis was aware of the comments that had been attributed to him in a “behind closed doors conversation”.

“The Pope never intended to offend or express himself in homophobic terms and he addresses his apologies to those who felt offended by the use of the term as reported by others.

“In the Church there is room for everyone, for everyone!” said Mr Bruni.

“Nobody is useless, nobody is superfluous, there is room for everyone. Just as we all are.”

People gather as Pope Francis presides a mass on World Children's Day at St Peter's Basilica in the Vatican on May 26, 2024.

Pope usually respectful to LGBTI people

The Pope’s comments are particularly surprising because since he became pontiff in 2013 he has generally looked to change the institution's approach to LGBTI people.

Francis has sought to present a Catholic Church that is more open to people of all sexualities as well as unmarred couples and overall a church that is less judgmental.

The year he entered the Vatican he was asked by a journalist about his thoughts on gay priests.

“Who am I to judge?” was his reply.

Last year, Francis allowed Catholic priests to bless same-sex relationships, as well as unmarried couples, so long as the blessing was not part of regular church rituals.

“The grace of God works in the lives of those who do not claim to be righteous but who acknowledge themselves humbly as sinners, like everyone else,” said Cardinal Victor Manuel Fernandez on the change.

The Pope has also suggested his support for civil recognition of same sex couples.

However, the Catholic Church has stopped short of allowing religious marriage of same sex couples. Officially, the church only believes sex should be between married heterosexual couples.

Official church doctrine still states same-sex acts are “intrinsically disordered”.

Gay men are also not allowed to become priests.

Golfer Grayson Murray's parents reveal his cause of death in emotional statement

The golf world received a stunning blow on Saturday with the death of rising PGA Tour star Grayson Murray at the age of 30.

On Sunday, May 26, his parents – Eric and Terry Murray – revealed their son's cause of death in an emotional statement released on social media.

"Life wasn't always easy for Grayson, and although he took his own life, we know he rests peacefully now," the statement shared by the PGA Tour read.

The family said they spent the last 24 hours "trying to come to terms with the fact that our son is gone." Having to come to terms with their loss and share it with the public, they said, "it's a nightmare."

The family said one thing is certain, Murray was loved by "all of his extended family, by his friends, by his fellow players and – it seems – by many of you reading this."

Murray, a two-time winner on the PGA Tour who battled alcohol issues and depression, played the first round and part of the second round in this week's Charles Schwab Challenge, but withdrew from the event after 16 holes.

"We mourn Grayson and pray for comfort for his loved ones," PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan said Saturday . "I reached out to Grayson's parents to offer our deepest condolences, and during that conversation, they asked that we continue with tournament play. They were adamant that Grayson would want us to do so."

Cold Chisel celebrates 50th anniversary with a national tour

Cold Chisel are back to celebrate their 50th birthday in style.

The band are marking a golden anniversary with a national tour, kicking off in Armidale where they were based back in 1974.

The beloved rockers will perform in major cities and regional centres across the country, culminating in a big Adelaide homecoming show.

Plus, the concerts in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane will be staged under a circus big top, a nod to the wild gigs Chisel performed in tents to promote their 1982 album, Circus Animals.

But Jimmy Barnes is disarmingly frank when I ask him what it's like to be still playing gigs with his Cold Chisel band mates, 50 years on.

"If you'd have asked me 50 years ago if I would still be doing it, I would have said no, because I didn't think we'd live to 21!"

Immediately those images spring to mind of a sweat-soaked, bandana-wearing frontman necking bottles of vodka on stage between songs (and sometimes during them).

Jimmy and the band worked hard and played even harder — the death wish was real.

These days, the pace has slowed a bit. They are, of course, men in their late sixties and early seventies.

But the passion to play together remains undiminished.

"Once you get back on stage, it just gels again," bass player Phil Small told News Breakfast.

"It's the amazing thing about this band. It's enjoyable on that stage. And that's what we all look forward to."

Cold Chisel's national tour starts in October. While there won't be a new album to promote, a best-of album will drop in August.

It will just be one of Australia's most popular and enduring bands, belting out anthems like Khe Sanh, Bow River, Cheap Wine and Flame Trees to crowds that will sing along word for word.

Guitarist and singer Ian Moss insists the band knows exactly what the audiences want.

"There's definitely a minimum of 14 songs [we need to play] if we want to get out of the venue alive," he jokes.

"Without the songs, you know, we'd be great musicians. But, we've got some fantastic songs."

For chief songwriter Don Walker, composing a set list brimming with classics involves a bit of work.

"Well, I do a lot of consulting with the other guys, and I throw around ideas," he told News Breakfast.

"You know, 'what do you think of this?' And everybody comes back with 'that's not gonna work! That's gonna fall over three songs in!' And then I go back to it!

"But we eventually come up with — between us — the right thing."

The tour will be especially meaningful for Barnes, who survived a near-death medical emergency late last year.

A bacterial infection led to open heart surgery, and months of painstaking recovery.

"In November when I got sick, prior to that week, I was healthy as a Mallee bull," he said.

"I was probably healthier than I was back 30 to 40 years ago in Chisel. But I got a bug, and it nearly killed me. And it shows you how quick and how fleeting life can be."

"But seizing the moment, and if you get the opportunity, get together and play music with the people you love … if anything, it brought that home to me."

Back on the Circus Animals tour, they shared the big top tents with motorbikes and trapeze acts. But Barnes says things will be a bit more subdued this time around.

"I don't know if you'll be seeing that!" he said.

"They had a motorbike above the wire, and a trapeze underneath. And I was underneath it singing and drinking vodka at the same time. So, it was pretty full on.

Cold Chisel band performs, circa 1980s. Singer Jimmy Barnes right of frame, in focus, holds mic while wearing red bandana.

"I think we'll we'll keep our feet on solid ground this time. These days, it's much more about about playing the music and making the music connect … I did a lot of things with smoke and mirrors in the old days."

Marking 50 years together is no mean feat for any band, especially one that lived on the edge.

For Don Walker, the secret to Chisel's success and longevity is simple.

"I think we somehow lucked into the two best singers of the generation. And how that happened with a bunch of young guys in Adelaide, I don't know," Walker said.

"We were attracted to each other as young blokes by the musical skills of the others. And then we did a lot of hard work on the road and just became, I think, good at what we did.

"With the other bands of our generation, there was a lot of intense competition and, and everybody got very good at what they do."

In an era when a lot of acts from the 70's and 80's seem to be in a perpetual touring loop, it's surely nothing for Chisel to now aim for its 60th anniversary?

"I mean, I think as long as we have the opportunity, if we can get up there and make music that inspires us. And if we make some connection with an audience, yeah, absolutely," Barnes said.

"I'd like to think that we'd still be here for the 60th anniversary. But, you know, maybe we'll go for the 55th first!"

Cold Chisel's 50th Anniversary Tour runs through October and November this year.

Grayson Murray, two-time PGA Tour winner who lived in Jupiter, dead at 30 by suicide

  • Murray, who was born and raised in Raleigh, N.C., was a member of Dye Preserve Golf Club in Jupiter.

PGA Tour pro Grayson Murray , who had moved to Jupiter with his fiancée, Christiana Ritchie, died by suicide Saturday, one day after he withdrew from the Charles Schwab Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas.

Murray, a two-time PGA Tour winner, was 30. The PGA Tour posted a statement Sunday on X from the Murray family, indicating the golfer killed himself Saturday morning."We would like to thank the PGA Tour and the entire world of golf for the outpouring of support," Eric and Terry Murray said. "Life wasn't always easy for Grayson, and although he took his own life, we know he rests peacefully now."

The PGA Tour considered postponing Sunday's final round at the Charles Schwab Challenge, but his parents insisted the tournament continue as scheduled, saying it was what their son would have wanted.

More: Grayson Murray talked about his 'past challenges' when applying to Jupiter private golf club

Murray, who was born and raised in Raleigh, North Carolina, attended Wake Forest, East Carolina and Arizona State where he played golf before turning pro. He was a member of Dye Preserve Golf Club in Jupiter. He was one of eight members of the club who played May 16-19 in the PGA Championship in Louisville, Kentucky. He finished tied for 43rd at Valhalla.

The news of his death was met with shock and sadness around the golf world.

“I am at a loss for words,” PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan said. “The PGA Tour is a family, and when you lose a member of your family, you are never the same. We mourn Grayson and pray for comfort for his loved ones.”

In 2021, Murray called out the PGA Tour on social media, saying he hadn’t been given enough support through bouts with alcoholism and mental health challenges. In Murray's post, he did not blame the tour for his issues but said he never once had a request answered by the commissioner or the Player Advisory Council.

Monahan said Saturday he called Murray "right away" after the post.

“Over the last several years, I spent a lot of time with him because I wanted to understand what we could do in his estimation, in his opinion, to help everybody else out here," Monahan said after arriving at Colonial Country Club following the news.

"We’ve made a number of advancements along those lines and, you know, it’s become a real point of focus and emphasis. We’re proud of the programs we have in place to support our players, to support everybody out here."

PGA Tour players reach out on social media

Several players reached out to Murray after his post.

"Speechless to hear about Grayson," Tequesta's Justin Thomas posted Saturday. "Guy had been through so many ups and downs to get where he was. I hurt so much for his family and the people closest to him. My condolences and deepest sympathies."

Jupiter's Luke Donald wrote on social media he recently gave Murray advice on how to play Augusta National.

"Truly devastating news that Grayson Murray has passed away," he wrote. "He asked me for some advice on how to play Augusta a few months ago, last week I saw him at the PGA Championship, life truly is precious. My condolences and prayers to his whole family that they may find some peace."

Murray and Ritchie met in 2021 at the American Express tournament in Palm Springs, California. He proposed to her in December 2023 at a country club in Nashville. “Easiest decision of my life," he wrote on his Instagram. "I love you so much, babe. I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with you. God is so Great.”

They planned to get married in Pinehurst, North Carolina.

Murray, ranked No. 58 in the world, played in the former Honda Classic at PGA National from 2017 to 2023. He did not play this year, the first as the renamed Cognizant Classic in the Palm Beaches. In 2020, he made a hole-in-one at the 17th hole, part of the famed Bear Trap. He used a pitching wedge on the 151-yard hole.

At the time, it was a fourth career ace for Murray.
