The best hotels in Madeira

By Adam Turner

Funchal Cottages

People of young and old flock to  Madeira year-round, enticed by consistent warm weather, a temperate, swimmable ocean, and a cinematic, mountainous landscape that makes you feel like you’re right on the edge of the world. The latter draws in hikers, cyclists, and thrill-seekers keen to ramble its famous levada trails, glide around winding roads on two wheels or paraglide off steep cliffs. Some come for something more sedate – long days reading on pebbly beaches , sunny al-fresco seafood lunches, and sunset swims at open-air lidos. Others simply pitch up at one of the many excellent resort hotels in Funchal, the capital, and rarely leave, except for occasionally dropping into the city for a drink or bite to eat. Regardless of what you desire, there is almost certainly a hotel in Madeira to meet your needs – a historic grand dame, a family-run Quinta in the country, a beachside spa hotel or a design-focused villa with sweeping sea views. You can find the best Madeira hotels laid out below.

Where is the warmest place in Madeira?

Madeira can experience all four seasons in a day. However, the safest bet for regular sunshine is on the island's southwest coast, places like Calheta, Ponta do Sol and Ribeira Brava. Although Câmara de Lobos and Funchal also enjoy mild-to-warm weather throughout the year (the north is chillier). In summer, the average temperature on the island is around 25 degrees. While spring is approximately 20-24 degrees, and winters average roughly 18-20 degrees. Still, expect heavy rain showers and the occasional thunderstorm, particularly from  December to  April .

What is the most beautiful part of Madeira?

Despite being nearly half the size of Gran Canaria, Madeira is an incredibly diverse island. The southwest coast is home to mountains covered in banana and avocado trees, exotic flowers and a string of pretty coves, like Madalena do Mar, Ponta do Sol, and the picturesque fishing village of Câmara de Lobos. On the north side, you’ll find the photogenic black sand beach of Seixal, the charming, 15 th -century straw-roofed houses in Santana, and the lava pools of Porto Moniz. Many visitors, however, stay in Funchal, and day trip to all of these places. One of the most beautiful activities to do is to walk along one of Madeira’s remarkable 200 irrigation tunnels, or levadas, which wind through tunnels, clouds and waterfalls high in the mountains.

Jacarandá Lounge at The Reserve Madeira

The Reserve Hotel, Funchal Arrow

Quiet luxury has landed on Madeira. The Savoy Palace Hotel opened in 2019, rising high above the seafront in Funchal, but – opening in January 2024 – it transformed one corner to create a boutique hotel within a hotel, with personal service that whisks you straight from the plane to the lobby. It’s an elevated experience in more ways than one: The Reserve’s bedrooms are on the top floors and have access to an exclusive rooftop pool with gull’s-eye views over the seafront. My apartment-sized room opens out onto a terrace with a plunge pool and sunbeds facing over the Atlantic; when I want a proper swim, I tiptoe in my white slippers to the rooftop pool a few storeys above. The sea breeze ruffles the bright bougainvillaea flowers; a cruise ship honks in the harbour below. After breakfast, my personal assistant, João, messages to say my spa session has been booked for 11 and would I look to book Nikkei for supper – a favourite for its sake cocktails, fusion sushi and donburi (the eel was excellent), as well as desserts which resemble floral still lifes. This is where The Reserve sets itself apart. Before you arrive, there’s a questionnaire to fill in to personalise your stay (favourite fruit? Oh, dragonfruit, just for the texture); at the airport, you’re met off the plane by a member of the airport team who fast-tracks you through immigration and into a lounge. Yes, your Reserve personal assistant can even arrange a variety of experiences to showcase the island, from a wine- and cheese-tasting session with the head sommelier and a chef’s tour of the market to an afternoon’s fishing out at sea. Best of all are the ones that connect you with the landscape, such as a sunrise trip to the heights of Pico do Areeiro on a four-by-four, driving up through the clouds. Rick Jordan

The best Madeira hotel for oldworld glamour First opened in 1891nbspReids Palace is Madeiras most famous grand dame...

Reid’s Palace, Funchal

The best Madeira hotel for old-world glamour First opened in 1891,  Reid’s Palace is Madeira’s most famous grand dame hotel. Perched on a cliffside overlooking Funchal Bay, and skirted by 10 acres of colourful tropical gardens, ‘the pink palace’ is the epitome of old-world glamour. A place so ostentatious that before Madeira's airport was built, guests arrived by boat and were carried to their rooms in hammocks. Things have changed since, but remnants of the hotel's fascinating history are visible throughout. A wonderfully preserved 19th-century dining room here, a black-and-white photo of Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw there. Shaw famously learnt the tango here, passing a signed photograph to his teacher before he left, which read, ‘to the only man that taught me anything’. Winston Churchill, however, is still considered the hotel's most important guest. The Blandy family, who owned Reid’s at the time, invited the former British prime minister to help boost post-war tourism in 1950. Naturally, the hotel named a presidential suite after him – a high-ceilinged, airy one-bedroom apartment with hand-painted Chinese wallpaper and spellbinding sea views. Only Churchill's name had to be removed from above the door to stop folk nosing around and disturbing its guests. Reid’s' other 79 rooms all have an elegant Victorian feel – whimsical with floral wallpapers in soft pinks and yellows or painted pastel walls. All are finished with dark-wood desks, antique mirrors and twee, frilled lamps. Some suites (there are 47 in total) come with balconies, theatrical white linen canopies and TVs hidden in cabinets, only revealed by flicking a switch beside the bed. Elsewhere, there are two magnificent heated outdoor  swimming pools , a spa and gym, and the exquisite William restaurant, named after Reid's original Scottish owner and fronted by the islands' only Madeira-born Michelin star chef, Luis Pestana. Still, a visit to Reid's wouldn't be complete without afternoon tea on its famous black-and-white checked terrace where guests feast on palm tree-framed views of the Atlantic, finely-cut finger sandwiches and fluffy scones.

Funchal Cottages

Funchal Cottages

The best Madeira hotel for design and privacy

Funchal Cottages isn't a hotel but a handful of judiciously curated high-end villas worthy of a few pages in a fancy interior design magazine, the kind you'd expect to find laid open on a young art director's coffee table. Publisher and designer Cristina Leitão Abreu, with her husband Ricardo, a finance director and golf manager, are the creative brains behind the holiday homes. Both were drawn in by the idea of breathing new life into dilapidated buildings. All five of the pair's bold properties have film-star-on-holiday qualities. Picture suspended infinity pools, cacti and aloe-ringed yoga lawns, brave colours and artistically upholstered headboards. One of our favourites, Pirate House, is a delightful two-bedroom cliffside hideout that’s a short walk from Funchal's old town. Cristina has created a playful 'Swiss Family Robinson' romance about the place. It's almost as if you've been castaway on a remote island but chanced upon a place with impeccable design and lavish comforts – slouchy Ligne Roset Togo sofas, upcycled door-cum-dining tables, bespoke light shades that look like coconuts husk, flatscreen TVs, hi-tech coffee machines and floor-to-ceiling windows. Much of the curated furniture was imagined by Cristina and crafted by local carpenter, Jorge. Other pieces were created by Madeira-based Jose Pedro, including an art deco-style lilac daybed worthy of Marilyn Monroe. Days at this quirky outpost are best spent watching ferries pootle by while barbecuing fresh tuna from the seafood market at Mercado dos Lavradores. Or toasting breakfast mimosas after a sunrise Pilates session as whales pop up in the distance.

Casas da Levada

Casas da Levada

The best Madeira hotel for families seeking an outdoor adventure

Twenty years ago, Joaquim and Maria Helena Abreu bought a scattering of ruins on a modest patch of land close to Ponta do Pargo on the west coast of Madeira. They intended to use it as a country escape with their two sons, André and Joaquim, but decided it was too special not to share. So, they renovated the ramshackle buildings and began experimenting – adding an infinity pool, a mini farm and herb garden. It helped that André grew up to be an architect. The hobbit bar is perhaps his magnus opus – a fairy-tale space with a living roof that’s blessed with plush interiors that a posh cocktail bar would be proud of. Here, however, there is no bartender. Guests simply make their own drinks, scribble down what they’ve had, and watch the sunset transform the sky from purple to orange through the circular doorway. In front, stands an inviting infinity pool, which Maria Helena jokes was the first and most important installation. Elsewhere, six lodgings – ranging from one-bedroom studios to a five-bedroom rustic stone house – make up what is a kind of self-catered, mini holiday village. Breakfast is included on a DIY basis. Eggs, oranges, milk, cereals, jams and tea/coffee already on the kitchen top on arrival. And fresh bread is hung on your door handle each morning in a sweet, checked drawstring bag. All dwellings have different interiors but share the same language, let’s call it Madeiran-country-farmhouse-meets-NY-warehouse chic. Floating staircases and concrete floors softened with patchwork rugs, log coffee tables, and framed photographs of the previous ruins. Wood burners add an extra level of cosiness, and coffee machines, white goods, TVs and good WIFI keep things practical. Yet the most enthralling thing about this place, is its connection to nature – quacking ducks, trinkling levadas (water tunnels) and endemic trees.

Quinta do Furão

Quinta do Furão

The best Madeira hotel for comfort and down-to-earth customer service

The first thing you notice when arriving at Quinta do Furao by night is the soft, sweet scent of the burning wood spilling from chimneys of nearby homes. By day, however, you are more likely to inhale the inviting aroma of freshly baked, sweet potato bread (a Santana delicacy) wafting from a wood-fired oven at the hotel’s bakery. Learn how they make it on Thursdays as part of a roster of free daily activities. Others include wine tasting, poncha-making and a guided botanical walk. Aside from a schedule of lovely classes, you will be lured to swim in the outdoor pool, set amidst a vineyard guarded by one towering palm tree and serenaded by the Atlantic Ocean below. Guests often choose the hotel to access nearby levadas. You’ll see them red-cheeked dressed in walking clobber in the restaurant – a woody, high ceilinged ski chalet of a place with a wood fire, a full wine list and homely, protein-rich typical Madeiran mountain food. The menu ranges from Portuguese-style chicken to beef and tuna skewers served with smoked mashed potato and a sauce (truffle, peppercorn, bearnaise). Staff at the restaurant and throughout the hotel have that rare ability to know what you want before you do, always presenting it with a genuine smile – drinks, warm bread or hire car options. Meanwhile, all 65 rooms have a homely feel (there was a vast refurb in 2020) thanks to a blend of dark woods, textures and pattern. Think dogtooth navy and cream sofas, duck egg blue walls, mint botanical printed bedspreads and colourful geometric headboards. Suites come with mollifying sea and vineyard views. Before leaving the area, swing by Santana to see the pretty, blue, white and red traditional triangular houses, Casas de Santana.

Savoy Saccharum Calheta Resort and Spa

The best Madeira hotel for R&R

Saccharum’s brutalist façade and grassy, wildflower-strewn roof are architecturally uncharacteristic of Madeira and more reminiscent of London’s Barbican Centre. It stands in Calheta, protruding from a dusty mountain on the island’s sunny southwest. Nearby, there’s a plethora of traditional resort hotels, a man-made sandy bay, a marina with a handful of fish restaurants, a rum factory and little else. Thankfully, Saccharum is a destination in itself, promising a fine blend of minimalism, modernity and hedonism. The five-star hotel, named after a type of sugar cane, boasts a chef’s garden and viewing point, a games room with ping pong, five bars, a yoga deck and possibly Madeira’s most-photographed infinity pool. Guests spend days swilling piña coladas beside one of the four pools, unravelling in the sumptuous spa or lounging on the hotel’s private stony beach across the way, occasionally taking a free shuttle into Funchal. All 196 rooms and suites here are ambiently lit and decorated in earthy hues with sugar cane motifs – Saccharum is on the site of an old sugar cane mill. Designer Nini Andrade Silva pays homage to the site’s history with old photographs and decorative machine parts scattered throughout. Opt for a sea-facing room, leave a crack in the door and let the swishing sounds of the Atlantic sing you to sleep. Rise in time for a knockout breakfast buffet – a lavish abundance of pastries, fresh fruits, cooked options, an omelette station and free-from snacks.

Quinta da Casa Branca

Quinta da Casa Branca

The best Madeira hotel for nature and tranquillity

Set in a sweet-smelling botanical garden, where Monarch butterflies flutter around balloon cotton bushes, and guests crane their necks at towering trees heavy with avocados, Quinta da Casa Branca is a tranquil retreat from nearby Funchal. Madeira's first design hotel, previously a banana plantation, has been owned by the same Scottish family since the 18th Century. The Leacock's, formerly big players in exporting Madeira wine, transformed the Quinta into a luxury boutique hotel in 1998 – adding a new wing in 2002, aided by local architect João Favila Menezes. The architecture here is a battle between classic and contemporary. The whitewashed manor house, built in the 1940s, is the centrepiece and was occupied by the Leacock family until 2010. It houses five spacious suites, all decorated in heritage style – Venetian chandeliers, antique furniture and ageing tapestries. The newest construction, however, was inspired by the famous prairie-style designs of Frank Lloyd Wright, and is a long, glass-fronted one-story building with slate roofs camouflaged by yellow trumpet trees and pink fuchsia. All rooms have a balcony or a terrace and are finished with botanical prints, natural hues and soft, floral furnishings. Afternoons at Quinta da Casa Branca are best spent roaming the gardens and learning about the flora and fauna (there over 260 species of plants here alone). Reading beside one of the two heated pools is another solid option – one has a French château feel; the other, ringed by banana trees, has a touch of Bali. For a treat, try the well-priced tasting menu – featuring a gorgeous duck in a red berry jus and chocolate pudding with cheese ice cream – at The Dining Room, the hotel's Michelin guide-worthy restaurant.

1905 Zinos Palace

1905 Zino’s Palace

The best Madeira hotel for a romantic getaway

Once a holiday home to the noble Zino family, 1905 Zino’s Palace is perhaps Madeira’s most romantic and aesthetically beautiful hotel. It looks as sweet as one of Mr Kipling’s French Fancies perched on a hillside in the sleepy village of Lugar de Baixo on the island’s southwest coast. With its sugary pink façade, majestic pointed Gothic spires and immaculate architectural symmetry; it looks ready-made to star in a Wes Anderson film. The charming four-star hotel, set against a mountainous backdrop of dense banana trees, has just nine rooms; the best come with balconies, four-poster beds and shoulder-dropping sea views. Handwritten tips are as adorable as the interiors – sage green walls, cutesy floral rugs and art deco lamps. What’s more delightful is how breakfast is presented and served until 12 pm on a sprawling terrace with panoramic views across the ocean and mountains. Aside from a small dipping pool, there’s also an unassuming pebbled shore down a winding path. Though the prettier beach at Ponta Do Sol - just a few minutes' drive away - is a better option. For all its magic, Zino’s is slightly off the beaten track, so you’ll need a car and a confident driver to visit.

Savoy Palace

The best Madeira hotel to unwind in unadulterated luxury

Nothing cries palace quite like lashings upon lashings of gold. And it seems designer Nini Andrade Silva kept this front of mind when crafting interiors at Savoy Palace – an immense cruise ship-shaped five-star hotel in São Martinho, Funchal. Picture gold lights, gold footbridges, gold velvet chairs, gold door handles, gold tiles, gold tables, and gold sinks. So much gold that things could easily sway to tacky, but not here. Savoy Palace is design bliss, from the blue futuristic top-floor fine-dining restaurant Galáxia Skyfood to the new, laidback, industrial-looking Pau de Lume. Not forgetting the hotel’s 309 clean, large rooms, which are fit for a royal. Imagine walnut root veneer desks, local casquinha wood floors, elaborate gold decals, eco-leather wall motifs and enormous cloud-like beds. Pool suites, however, are the crème de la crème, offering wrap-around balconies with sea and/or city views, daily in-suite delights, a free newspaper service, pillow menu, an exclusive lounge for canapés and drinks, as well as complimentary spa access. The hotel’s award-winning Laurea Spa is what cements the Savoy Palace as one of Madeira’s finest hotels. Inspired by the island’s UNESCO World Heritage-approved Laurissilva forest, the green and blue-hued spa combines a floral palette with high-end luxury gadgets. Float from steam and sauna rooms to hot tubs and dipping pools, or glide through sensorial showers spraying mint, lavender and eucalyptus scents inspired by levada hikes.

Quinta da Saraiva

Quinta da Saraiva

The best Madeira hotel to live like a Madeiran

Most visitors to Madeira know the sweet fishing village of Câmara de Lobos as the place Winston Churchill painted on his one visit to the island. Near the marina there’s even an almost life-size bronze statue of him with his easel, paintbrush in hand, fedora on, and cigar in his mouth. We see Quinta da Saraiva as a hotel the former wartime prime minister would have liked to visit. Perhaps perching himself on one of the hotel’s balconies fashioning a watercolour of the surrounding hillsides covered in banana trees, the ocean visible on the horizon. The small boutique hotel was the country home of the Rodrigues Figueira family. Although most of them fled to Venezuela in the 50s to escape Madeira’s post-war economic downturn or enforced military service. US-based political economist Daniel Gonçalves Rodrigues, one of the grandsons, returned to Madeira around seven years ago and began looking for investment opportunities. Fast-forward to 2019, and he, and the family, had restored his grandmother’s old country house. The goal was to preserve their heritage via a boutique hotel that feels more like staying with a Madeiran family in the country – only with modern-day luxuries (a hot tub, outdoor pool, widescreen TVs). The Quinta is more pastoral and comfortable than high-end luxury, but that’s precisely where its charm lies. Handpicked artwork by a descendant of the family fills the walls throughout. Goats roam the surrounding gardens, and pretty flowers blossom. All 15 modest rooms have a rustic, British country-style familiarity – floral patterned bedspreads, natural colours and views across the banana plantation or ocean.

Hotel address:   Quinta da Saraiva, Cam da Saraiva 18, 9300-046 Câmara de Lobos

The Cliff Bay hotel

The Cliff Bay

The best Madeira hotel for food-lovers

The first thing guests do when checking in to this colossal five-star hotel, located on a cliffside in São Martinho, is attempt to book a table at Il Gallo d’Oro (or so we’re told). But it’s almost always too late by this point – the restaurant is usually fully booked well in advance. Why? It’s Madeira’s most distinguished dining spot, home to two of the island’s three Michelin stars and a recently-awarded Green star, given for sustainability in gastronomy. French chef Benoît Sinthon is mainly responsible for taking the gourmet restaurant to such dizzying heights, having been at the helm since 2004. The dining room, upgraded in 2021, is nothing special – stylish, simple, and fresh. The food, however, really is. Chiefly an 8-12 course tasting menu, which transports diners around the island, from sea to mountain, a mouthful at a time. It includes scabbard fish three ways, crab in a bisque so gloriously deep in flavour you could bathe in it, and meaty seabream cooked to perfection. Next door, housed in The Cliff Bay’s exclusive, ultra-modern Les Suites (a collection of 23 suites), you’ll find Avista. The twin-dining concept serves Mediterranean food, fresh from a Josper grill, on one side and various Asian dishes (sushi, Korean ribs, steamed buns) on the other. More traditional food can be found at the Rose Garden, which has a rotating three-course menu for under £50. In the snug Le Cliff Bar from 5-6pm, mixologists whip-up half-price drinks – including a first-rate Negroni – as musicians perform sweet-sounding jazz. If you’re not content eating your way around the hotels, don’t stress, there’s also a spa, indoor/outdoor pool, direct sea access, and an outdoor hot tub encased by nobbly stakes of volcanic rock. The hotel’s 202 rooms, refurbed in 2021, are refined, well-lit, relaxing places with garden or sea views and marble bathrooms.

14 of the best hotels in Madeira

Where would you choose – an old-world quinta with gleaming antiques or a sleek urban hangout with a rooftop pool our expert helps you pick the perfect place.

travel man madeira hotel

M adeira means wood and its capital, Funchal, means fennel — and those were the island’s dominant features when the Portuguese arrived in 1419. Much has changed due to the success of its fortified wine which, in its 18th century heyday, was exported globally. Some of the hotels below were once private manor houses, owned by British families working in the wine trade, but there are also sleek newcomers, an old sugar cane mill and, of course, the famous Reid’s, a legend in itself, whose lush gardens are evidence of the island’s subtropical climate making this a perfect all year round destination. Here are the best hotels in Madeira to book now.

Main photo: The Cliff Bay, Madeira

Quinta da Casa Branca

1. Quinta da Casa Branca, Sao Martinho

It’s the garden filled with camphor and floss silk, banana trees, cascading bougainvillea and, of course, birds of paradise that makes this hotel sing. It opened in 1988 as one of the first design hotels on the island with huge floor-to-ceiling windows, polished floors, Venetian chandeliers and mementoes from the Leacock family — part of the Madeira wine trade in the 18th century. Book ahead for the fabulous restaurant and try the venison carpaccio with truffle ice cream — you can swim it off later in the heated pool.

Hotel the Vine

2. The Vine Hotel, Funchal

The local designer Nini Andrade da Silva is the man behind this vino-inspired hotel. Furniture mimics twisted vines along with rich, grape-purple fabrics and a spa offering vinotherapy massages and facials for stressed oenophiles. Bedrooms have freestanding tubs at the foot of the bed and sophisticated, subtle dishes are carefully arranged in Uva, the restaurant that serves sweeping skyline views with each course. You’ll be thirsty by the time you get to the rooftop swimming pool; make the most of the adjoining wine bar.

The Cliff Bay

3. The Cliff Bay, Sao Martinho

This hotel stands on a promontory on the bay of Funchal with direct access to the Atlantic Ocean, and is surrounded by beautiful gardens. After chugging a welcome glass of champagne at check-in you can take your pick from one of three pools or pull up a chair at the island’s only two-Michelin-star restaurant, Il Gallo d’Oro, where the chef Benoît Sinthon delivers sublime, locally sourced dishes. The hotel will also pack a picnic for you should you be tempted by a hike.

Reid’s Palace, A Belmond Hotel

4. Reid’s Palace, A Belmond Hotel, Sao Martinho

This is the grande dame of Madeira and interiors are light and bright. The facilities include tennis courts and seawater and freshwater swimming pools. There’s lots of pomp around the famous afternoon tea of scones and clotted cream, and the William Restaurant is another of Madeira’s Michelin-starred numbers. Jump in an SUV and staff will whisk you to Pico do Arieiro, Madeira’s third-highest peak, to see the sun rise above the clouds.

Spa Y Pool Y Price £££

Casa Velha do Palheiro (Tui)

5. Casa Velha do Palheiro, São Gonçalo

Originally a hunting lodge set high up above Funchal, Casa Velha do Palheiro is an estate acquired in 1885 by the Blandy family — a name synonymous with the Madeira wine trade. It remains in the family today. Thirty-seven rooms and suites come with fresh flowers, polished antiques, deep carpets and floral fabrics. Wander the hotel’s rather magnificent private gardens, which draw the local Madeira trocaz pigeons. There’s a private yacht if you want to go whale watching or dolphin spotting, and the excellent restaurant is considered one of the island’s best.

Les Suites at the Cliff Bay

6. Les Suites at the Cliff Bay, Sao Martinho

The latest addition to the Madeira Porto Bay hotel group is this sleek, suite-only hotel that borders the Atlantic Ocean and pairs stirring views with direct access to the sea. Twenty-three suites have been carved out of two centuries-old houses and a modern wing, all surrounded by lush gardens and inset with an infinity pool. You’ll stay entertained with a games room, library and a cinema room, as well as meals in Avista restaurant, which plates up local favourites such as black scabbard fish with a tomato and cornbread crust.

Estalagem da Ponta do Sol

7. Estalagem da Ponta do Sol, Ponta do Sol

This dazzling hotel is perched high above the Atlantic in what is generally considered the warmest point of the island. Fifty-four rooms are accessed by a lift built into the rocks and stark whitewashed exteriors complement minimalist interiors with slate floors, black-and-white photographs and floor-to-ceiling glass windows. The entire hotel is made up of a series of cubes, linked by bridges offering panoramic views at every turn, but the show-stealer is the striking infinity pool that juts out above the ocean.

Sé Boutique Hotel

8. Sé Boutique Hotel, Funchal

A new addition to the island’s clutch of boutique hotels, Sé Boutique has bagged the best postcode on the island thanks to its next-door neighbour, the 16th-century cathedral in central Funchal. Start with a drink at the colour-popping bar that delivers 360-degree skyline views before unpacking in bedrooms decorated with blue and white tiles that replicate the cathedral’s interior. There are plenty of great restaurants in striking distance; don’t miss O Calhau for its octopus with chickpea puree.

Spa N Pool N Price £

Saccharum

9. Saccharum, Calheta

The island’s long history of producing sugar cane was the local designer Nini Andrade da Silva’s departure point for decorating this hotel built on the site of an old sugar mill. Snapshots of the crop are scattered throughout, while alembic metalwork adds a local touch to the restaurant. There are 243 rooms and suites, and five pools in total — with one exclusively for children. Big and little ones can also be entertained with the games room and squash court, and on rainy days settle in for one of the daily screenings on sugar cane growing.

Porto Bay Serra Golf

10. Porto Bay Serra Golf, Santo da Serra

You’ll soon be charmed by this petite hotel, painted in a calming cornflower blue; its art nouveau façade and fishscale-tiled roof have bagged it heritage building status. Choose between 21 rooms, the best of which have direct access to the exotic gardens that contain more than 90 different species of plant. The restaurant showcases highlights from the region’s food such as clams with white wine, garlic and coriander — and there’s a spa and an indoor heated pool. Try for a hole-in-one at the best golf course on the island next door.

Pestana Churchill Bay

11. Pestana Churchill Bay, Câmara de Lobos

Situated in Câmara de Lobos, a pretty fishing town on the sunny south coast, is a hotel that pays homage to Winston Churchill, who frequently came here to paint. It’s filled with memorabilia, inspirational quotes from Britain’s wartime prime minister and antique furniture. Stay in one of 12 rooms in the original building, which faces a black pebble beach, or bed down in the new wing where 45 bedrooms come with paintings by Churchill on a printed canvas behind the beds. Stretch out in the rooftop swimming pool that peers out across the sea and stick around for lunch: there’s a restaurant with a short but tempting regional menu.

Hotel da Villa

12. Hotel da Vila, Porto da Cruz

They say that looks are deceiving, and this hotel, once the town’s prison, makes the case. Thanks to the architect and designer Duarte Caldeira, you’d never tell — it’s now a charmingly simple hotel wrought with local wood and stone and traditional Portuguese tiles. There is one clue that hints at its past of incarceration: the location. Hotel da Vila is surrounded by cliffs and steep banana and sugar cane plantations and sits opposite a pebbled beach — perfect if you want to hide away. Your only crime here will be overindulging in the regional restaurant; a common daily special is the lip-smacking fresh mussels with garlic, white wine and coriander.

Quinta Jardins do Lago

13. Quinta Jardins do Lago, Sao Pedro

Check in here and you’ll find yourself in one of the most impressive quintas on the island, situated in the hills outside Funchal and surrounded by a garden with more than 600 plant species and a swimming pool bordered by mango trees. Interiors give a glimpse of Madeira of yesteryear, with gleaming parquet flooring, oil paintings and fresh flowers freshly picked from the garden. Antiques abound in the library, the billiard room and the pink room, which spills out onto a terrace with a 16th-century ceramic wall panel.

Spa N Pool Y Price ££

Castanheiro Boutique Hotel (Tui)

14. Castanheiro Boutique Hotel, Sao Pedro

Venture to the cobbled streets of the capital and you’ll find this boutique hotel converted from five heritage buildings that each straddle the past three centuries. Glimpse into the 18th-century artisan’s atelier or a 20th century bakery; original elements from wooden rafters to exposed stone arches have been preserved throughout the 81 bedrooms. A rooftop pool delivers the perfect cooling-off point and Tipografia is the Mediterranean restaurant tucked away in a pretty internal courtyard.

The Force was not with them.

A YouTuber recently released a four-hour video sharing her previous visit to the Walt Disney World Resort’s Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser experience, revealing why she wasn’t shocked that it shut down after just 18 months.

The Galactic Starcruise opened in March 2022, and Disney announced its closure in May 2023 with the last guests served in September 2023.

tar Wars: Galactic Starcruiser promo pics

YouTuber Jenny Nicholson posted the deep dive early this week looking back at her time at the “Star Wars”-themed hotel and live-action roleplay experience.

And despite its length, the clip has amassed more than 4 million views and mesmerized all with the shocking, expensive mess of it all.

She shared that she spent more than $6,000 for her and another guest — about $2 per person per minute, she calculated — to share one room on the Galactic Starcruiser.

Her verdict: the whole thing was out-of-this-world overpriced and underwhelming, leading to its early shutdown.

YouTuber Jenny Nicholson offered an in-depth recap of her stay at the immersive galactic experience.

“If the value of something is what people are willing to pay, I can objectively say the Disney company charged too much for this experience because time showed that the majority of people on this Earth were not willing to pay it,” she declared in the video.

The Galactic Starcruiser was advertised as an “immersive, customizable ‘Star Wars’ experience” where guests were encouraged to dress up and were guided through a three-day-long franchise storyline complete with a full itinerary played through a special app.

But Nicholson complained about a dinner show with a bad view, mini-games she thought were boring and pointless, and some actors who didn’t engage with her attempts to role-play.

Los Angeles Times columnist Todd Martens sits in one of the bunk beds inside a room at the Halcyon ship.

She also noted that the already hefty price tag didn’t cover the full experience as they had to shell out more cash for some features, such as watching a Disney movie in the hotel room.

“Disney has always had high prices, but they also have a reputation for quality,” the reviewer said in the video. “This was more than they’ve ever charged for an experience before, so the logic followed that this would be the greatest experience they’ve ever offered.”

This comes as additional junk fees have become a major point of contention in many industries, including airlines and credit cards .

Some people came to the hotel’s defense in the comments, but Nicholson pointed to the hotel’s closure as her validation.

“Here’s my supporting evidence: The hotel went out of business,” Nicholson said in the video. “If the value of something is what people are willing to pay, I can objectively say the Disney company charged too much for this experience, because time showed that the majority of people on this Earth were not willing to pay it.”
