Although it only lasted for three seasons in the 1960s, the original Star Trek has become one of the most influential TV series---and pieces of science fiction in any medium---of all time. Creator Gene Roddenberry's utopian vision focuses on exploration rather than conflict, as the starship Enterprise seeks out "new life and new civilizations." Led by William Shatner's hotheaded Capt. James T. Kirk, Leonard Nimoy's logical Vulcan Mr. Spock, and DeForest Kelley's irascible Dr. McCoy, Star Trek remains a sci-fi gold standard.

Thanks to the popularity of Star Trek reruns, NBC brought back Gene Roddenberry and many of the show's writers and actors for this animated version, which lasted for two seasons in the 1970s. It follows the continuing adventures of the Enterprise crew and has been considered an extension of the original series, with characters and concepts that later made their way into live-action. The animation may be rudimentary, but the stories are every bit as thoughtful and layered as the episodes of the original series.

Following the continued success of Star Trek reruns and theatrical films, creator Gene Roddenberry launched a new series with a new Enterprise crew, set even further in the future. Starring Patrick Stewart as Capt. Jean-Luc Picard, The Next Generation continues Roddenberry's focus on a harmonious future, while expanding on alien races and galactic regions introduced in the original series. Co-starring Jonathan Frakes, Brent Spiner, LeVar Burton, Marina Sirtis, and more, The Next Generation has become every bit as iconic as its predecessor, setting the stage for decades of Trek to come.

Overlapping with the end of The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine is the first Star Trek series to take place away from the Enterprise, set on a space station located in a volatile area of the galaxy. Avery Brooks leads the series as Capt. Benjamin Sisko, overseeing an unpredictable crew of Starfleet officers and alien allies, along with an entire station's worth of residents and businesses. Returning to the exploratory missions of a starship, Voyager takes Star Trek into an entirely new quadrant of the galaxy. The crew of the titular vessel is transported via a mysterious energy wave into an area of space where Starfleet has never been. Capt. Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) must lead her crew on a long journey home, while navigating the unfamiliar threats in this strange new region. Voyager expands the scope of Star Trek's universe while introducing fan-favorite characters like the holographic Doctor (Robert Picardo) and the former Borg Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan).

A prequel set in the years before the formation of the galaxy-spanning United Federation of Planets, Enterprise takes place on the starship Enterprise a century before it's occupied by Capt. Kirk and his crew. The primarily human crew is led by Capt. Jonathan Archer (Scott Bakula), as inhabitants of Earth are just beginning to explore the galaxy and encounter some of Star Trek's familiar alien races. Enterprise features a more action-oriented focus than previous Trek series, setting the tone for Trek series and movies to come, and its later seasons are driven by long-term serialized stories.

After a dormant period of more than a decade following the cancellation of Enterprise, Discovery brings Star Trek into the streaming era with another prequel. Set after Enterprise but before the original series, Discovery stars Sonequa Martin-Green as Commander Michael Burnham, the science officer on the starship Discovery. The first two seasons explore the early days of the Federation and revisit many classic Trek themes and characters. In later seasons, both the starship and the show are thrust forward hundreds of years into the future, truly going boldly where no Trek has gone before.

In conjunction with Star Trek's streaming revival, this anthology of bite-size episodes provides supplemental stories for the new Trek era. It's another way for Star Trek's creators to illustrate their expansive universe of galactic space exploration.

Patrick Stewart reprises his Star Trek: The Next Generation role of Capt. Jean-Luc Picard in a series set 20 years after Picard's last Star Trek appearance. The retired Picard returns to active duty with a new mission and a new crew, in a slower, more character-driven story than other Trek series. In addition to Stewart, actors from other past Trek series, including Jonathan Frakes, Marina Sirtis, and Jeri Ryan, make appearances, as Picard struggles to find his place in a changed Starfleet that no longer reflects his values.

The first animated Star Trek series since the 1970s is also the first overtly comedic Trek series, focusing on a group of lower-level recruits who do all the grunt work on intergalactic voyages. Set around the end of the Next Generation/Deep Space Nine/Voyager era, Lower Decks takes place on the Cerritos, a Starfleet ship mostly assigned to minor missions. The creators combine gentle mockery with a deep love for and knowledge of Trek lore, which makes them perfect for taking the franchise down a peg.

Star Trek returns to animation again for this family-friendly series aimed at bringing in a younger audience. Like Star Trek: Voyager, Prodigy takes place in the remote Delta Quadrant, where a rowdy group of young aliens from a prison colony discover an abandoned Starfleet ship. They take control of the ship so they can escape their grim circumstances, in a harsh backwater beyond the reach of the United Federation of Planets. As they flee the colony's cruel overlord, they're trained in starship operations by a hologram of Voyager's legendary Kathryn Janeway (voiced by Kate Mulgrew).

A spin-off of Star Trek: Discovery, Strange New Worlds takes place on the Enterprise before Capt. Kirk took over, when it was led by Capt. Christopher Pike (Anson Mount). Pike is joined by younger versions of familiar characters who've served on the Enterprise, including Spock (Ethan Peck) and Nyota Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding). In contrast to the heavily serialized storytelling of other modern Star Trek series, Strange New Worlds focuses primarily on single-episode stories, enhancing its throwback style.

'Star Trek: Voyager' cast spills all the tea in new documentary trailer

From Kate Mulgrew to Garrett Wang, cast members reveal behind-the-scenes secrets of this iconic  Trek  series.

Star Trek: Voyager  is getting the documentary treatment and, if the first trailer for  To the Journey   is any indication, fans will be getting a very candid peek behind the curtain of the classic  Trek  series. 

The extended trailer made its debut on TrekMovie.com this week, with nearly seven minutes of cast and crew interviews that provide a glimpse into the creative struggles and Hollywood headaches that surrounded Voyager 's seven-season run from January 1995 to May 2001. Captain Janeway herself, Kate Mulgrew , offers a blunt recollection of her early days in the role, acting on set under the judgmental eyes of Paramount and then-UPN TV brass following the infamous departure of the show's original Janeway, French actor Geneviève Bujold.

Garrett Wong, who played Ensign Harry Kim, reveals that he was "the only Asian male series regular" on television at the time. Of any TV show. (And TV still has a long way to go to bridge that representation gap).

Other highlights include: Executive producers Jeri Taylor, Brannon Braga, and Rick Berman discussing the origins of the show and actor Robert Beltran, who played a member of the terrorist group the Maquis before becoming Janeway's first officer, shares insights into when former cast mate Jennifer Lien (who played Kes) was fired from the show.

Watch: “Threshold” From ‘Star Trek: Voyager’ In The Style Of ‘The Animated Series’ + Creator Interview

In April a video recreating a clip from Star Trek: The Next Generation in the style of Star Trek: The Animated Series went viral, with over 400,000 views. Now the same Gazelle Automations team is back and this time they are taking on Star Trek: Voyager .

Voyager’s “Threshold” gets animated

For Voyager Gazelle took on a bigger challenge, with almost six minutes of animation, compared to just over two minutes for the TNG video. Once again it is lovingly recreated in the 1970s Filmation style of The Animated Series , including music and sounds. There are even some TAS deep cut cameos. And to add a bit of fun, they are using the notorious episode “Threshold.”

Creator interview

Gazelle Automations was Founded by Justin and Lindsay Lee. Based in Toronto, Canada, Gazelle Automations has the goal of creating entertainment with the magic of puppetry, model miniatures and animation. They work with Gerry Anderson’s Thunderbirds, ITV, BBC, CBC, and others. As we did with the last video, we reached out via email to Justin to talk about how they put this all together.

Why did you pick Voyager as the next challenge, and why “Threshold”?

Since Voyager comes from a similar era of Trek to TNG, I thought it’d be fun to again “translate” that world into the TAS style. As for the excerpt I chose, I went through lists of episodes over and over for ages until I decided on “Threshold”. To me, there’s something TAS-y about crew members turning into salamanders (“The Ambergris Element” comes to mind). And to address the obvious, I did choose what’s considered to be a terrible episode of Trek, just to see how it would work as a Saturday morning cartoon.

Was the process easier this time and were there any specific challenges you didn’t have with TNG one?

This one was way harder than TNG: TAS, but of course, I did that to myself! I wanted to do the whole chunk from Janeway in the hallway to them finding the babies, and that meant lots more backgrounds, characters, etc. Also, the original segment has lots of long holds on actors, which just doesn’t work in this style, so I ended up drawing way more stuff so I could cut away to things and keep it visually interesting.

What are your favorite deep cuts you put in this one?

My wife and fellow Gazelle Automations producer Lindsay Lee loves Em/3/Green (he’s currently her phone lock screen, no joke), so making the conn officer someone from that unnamed race was really fun. And unlike TNG:TAS which only showed a handful of regulars, I wanted to show EVERY Voyager lead actor in the Filmation style somewhere, so one, in particular, had to be snuck into a shot.

So, will there be more?

Maybe there’ll be more? I never thought I’d do a second one, so…

This is absolutely brilliant, might want to rewatch the whole series if they did this. Although pause at 2:06 and tell me who is at the helm…….?

M3-Green or ‘Em/3/green’ – take your pick.

It’s a TAS species.

I never really looked into the genesis of the whole, “Why a salamander, exactly?” aspect of that damned story. I can’t imagine Andre Bormanis sat them down with a convincing argument about how that’s where human evolution was heading. Kinda just felt like it came out of a discussion with Michael Westmore about what he could win an Emmy for. If so… mission accomplished!

The animation is exquisite. I hope they go for it with DS9 and all the spin-offs, eventually.

This episode was a complete nonsense in terms of adapting real-world science. I seem to recall that the Doctor explains essentially that the future state of a lineage is pre-encoded in its DNA, rather than a result of selection pressure from its environment.

Yeah. And treats evolution as something that can happen in an individual. It’s always a multigenerational population process.

Yeah bro Threshold is total nonsense. I can’t even watch it anymore. I just rewatched the entire series with my girlfriend a month ago who watched it all for the first time. It’s so bad it’s one of the episodes I decided to skip lol.

I suppose it’s just a recycling of Braga’s de-evolution idea from TNG’s “Genesis,” isn’t it?

And they kind of evolved backwards :D Today, that storyline could have been made borderline work with some epigenetics technobabble (same DNA, different DNA reading and translation into proteins; e.g. metamorphosis of caterpillar to butterfly is epigenetics driven), but 1996 was still the genetics era with the human genome project underway. But I’d say human to salamander also isn’t what epigenetics do ;)

Also, clearly Lower Decks needs to give us some backstory on Em/3/green’s species.

Far better as TAS than live action. Good choice.

You probably already know this, but just in case not, Lower Decks has in fact already shown a couple more members of Em/3/Green’s species (“Nasat”, according to the Starfleet Corps of Engineers books, though that name hasn’t been made screen canon – yet…). A couple are seen working at the Starbase in “An Embarrassment of Dooplers”.

I’m going to need to look for them on a rewatch of “An Embarrassment of Dooplers.”

It would be great to have Lower Decks give them some canonical onscreen backstory.

Even better if they use the SCOE one. I haven’t read all the Core of Engineers books, but I think that they were a great concept. They’re definitely in my list of things that Paramount+ should try out as a direct-to-streaming movie (along with the Department of Temporal Investigations, DTI).

He does such great work, this is so much fun. TNG already was unexpected and so funny, and now this one so quickly after the other really tops it. I’d love to see a discussion between Mike McMahan, someone from the Lower Decks animation team, and Justin Lee 2D animation stuff and Star Trek.

The logical conclusion(s) to a series of these could be live-action re-enactments of scenes from TAS, Lower Decks , and Prodigy .

Love every second. We need a whole anthology series from these artists. Please make it so!

I just love this. It’s love to see they get a chance to go back and pick all of star trek the animated treatment. The music and animation style is just perfect. I guess it shows how much the animated series got right: including the intro music which Lower Decks used so well.

Hopefully, Paramount has seen these clips and will offer these people a job so that they can get paid for doing this. I would love to see more Star Trek shows turned into an animated format in the style of TAS and that is definitely something I’d love to watch, especially on a Saturday morning 😀, like when I was a kid back in the ’80s.

They should do the episode of Enterprise where Trip gets pregnant next. I think that would translate perfectly into the TAS format and that’s considered to be a bad episode of Star Trek too, like Threshold is. Also, I would just love to see how T’Pol looks animated. Oh, and whatever episode these guys do decide to do next, I hope we get to see Arex and M’Ress in it.

If the Lees had a secondary objective of drawing some attention to their animation studio, it seems that they achieved it.

There’s much more to this than just redoing scenes in the style of TAS (which they do so faithfully). The editing and splicing in of cut-away to make break up the close-up dialogue bits, is very well timed.

Yes, I agree. I think if their intention was to get Paramount’s attention, then, as I mentioned in my previous post, I hope that they have done it because they are truly talented and deserve a shot, whether it be in Star Trek or doing something else for Paramount. The Lee’s are very talented and, from what I’ve seen, give 110% to anything they do. Live long and prosper, TG47🖖.

Might not be a good thing to attract Paramount’s attention. Next thing they know, a lawsuit might knock on their door. Not that I’d want it. These are fantastic pieces of work!

One, these clips I’m pretty sure are meant to be part of a resume for the Lees’, that’s just my opinion, though. I believe that they do want to catch Paramount’s attention. Who wouldn’t want to work for Paramount in the movie and TV industry?

There’s a lot of attention to detail in these clips and they have an animation studio and naturally they want to bring attention to their studio. So what better way to do that then by posting clips or snippets of past Star Trek shows turned into the TAS style on the Internet? They’ve gotten 100,000s of views, especially the TNG one. That one got 400,000 awhile back, I don’t know how many views it has by now because that was back in April.

That’s why I think that they’re trying to catch Paramount’s attention. If it was just the Lees’ by themselves making these for fun, then I would think differently and view them like fan films. But the Lees’ are the heads of Gazelle Automations and they probably want their company to get recognition from a major studio. This is clearly a labor of love with these clips!

Do you think it’s easy to make these clips look like TAS did 50 years later? That technology from the ’70s is long gone. If it was so easy to do, then why hasn’t it been done before? That’s why I think that they’re trying to get Paramount’s attention and that leads me to my second thing here that I want to talk about.

Paramount doesn’t just go around suing people. I don’t know where you got that idea from. If you’re talking about Axenar, that guy was set to make a lot money from that movie. Paramount stated their rules clearly to that guy and told him that he could make the movie but when he stood to gain a lot of money from it, that’s when they put a stop to it because THEY are the IP holders and owners of Star Trek so THEY can be the only ones to profit from it.

I don’t understand why people have a tough time understanding that. They’re not in the wrong there and there’s still people making fan films out there and not getting sued for them, just look on YouTube. And Paramount already knows about these clips because they have a social media team, every major studio has one, and every time Star Trek is mentioned, they know and they see why and then they check it out so they already know about these clips. I don’t consider Paramount to be the “Dark Overlord” of Star Trek who just goes around suing everyone at random, that’s just ridiculous, dude!

Funny that they picked possibly the worst STV episode. The incidental 🎶 in the final bit (with the babies) was hilarious and perfect.

I think that was deliberate, because this improves that ep so much by making it more Star Trek campy.

There are some great episodes, (Yesteryear; More Tribbles, more Troubles), and several important firsts for the franchise – holosimilations gone amok, Uhura in command in the big chair, Kzinti!

As funny as this is, honestly it just makes me want a legit Animated “the further adventures of….” TNG or Enterprise. May not work as well for DS9 or Voyager but still would take a shot. Heck do an anthology and pepper each series in. Unconnected, just purely an anthology show that is a serious take, (I do enjoy Lower Decks but it’s a different beast).

I loved it! I could be picky as say the Voyagers nacelles should be bent up at warp. I wonder if that was intentional because NCC-1701 had no movement or just an omission? Loved the TNG episode too. Very smart adding in animation plate dirt and smudges that is so TAS!

Wow this was great and just as good as the TNG version! These guys obviously love classic Star Trek and how well they make it feel like TAS is so well done. If I didn’t watch TAS for the first time last year I don’t think I would’ve appreciated this at all. But now I small at every frame of it!

And yes, they must do DS9 and ENT eventually!

Or, on the other end of the quality scale, “The Doomsday Machine.”

Definitely use the sillier episodes for these TAS remakes. In fact, if LD ever do a time travel episode, featuring a trip to the 23rd century, use these people.

All of this confirms that if you compare TAS: TAS:TNG and VOY that TOS completely destroyed the others when you take out the production values and go on plot alone. Time for a CGI remake of TAS and them to release Secret of Vulcan Fury as a CGI movie!

A crowdfunding effort provided more momentum in March 2021, when the campaign blasted through its goal of $150,000 less than a day after it launched, eventually collecting over $1.3 million — the most money ever pledged for a crowdfunded documentary.

"To the Journey" is currently moving into the final stages of production, and the documentary is slated to start appearing at fan events and on streaming services, and will become available for purchase in late 2022.

Where to watch 'Star Trek' shows

There are 12 "Star Trek" shows in total, including nine live-action series and three animated shows. All of the shows are available on Paramount Plus, and many are also available to buy or rent from video-on-demand (VOD) services. One series, "Deep Space Nine," is also streaming on Netflix.

Where to watch 'Star Trek' movies

The "Star Trek" franchise includes 13 movies from 1979 to 2016. A new movie is also set to begin production in spring 2022. You can currently watch every "Star Trek" film on Paramount Plus. The movies are also available to buy or rent without a subscription through different VOD services, and you can stream a couple for free with ads.

'Star Trek' timeline and eras explained

"Star Trek" movies and TV shows all take place in different time periods that focus on different crews and starships. These time periods are generally categorized by fans and creators into four distinct eras: Pre-TOS, TOS, TNG, and Kelvin

Pre-TOS era

Movies and TV shows set during the Pre-The Original Series (Pre-TOS) era take place at some point before James T. Kirk becomes captain of the Enterprise.

A few notable series set during this early time period include "Star Trek: Enterprise," "Star Trek: Discovery," and " Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ."

The Original Series (TOS) era of movies and TV shows follows the crew members on the starship USS Enterprise after Kirk (William Shatner) becomes captain. Other notable characters featured during this period include Spock (Leonard Nimoy), Dr. McCoy (DeForest Kelley), Nyota Uhura (Nichelle Nichols), and Hikaru Sulu (George Takei).

The Original Series era includes the first "Star Trek" TV show from the 1960s, as well as several spin-off movies that feature Captain Kirk and his crew. 

The Next Generation (TNG) era is set 100 years after Kirk's adventures during "The Original Series," and includes movies and TV shows about the new crew of the USS Enterprise with Patrick Stewart as Captain Picard.

"Deep Space Nine" and "Voyager" are set during this time period as well, but focus on other crews and starships. Captain Picard's story also continues after "The Next Generation" in the Paramount Plus original series "Star Trek: Picard."

Kelvin Timeline

The Kelvin Timeline was introduced in 2009 with the release of director J.J. Abrams' first "Star Trek" movie starring Chris Pine as Captain Kirk and Zachary Quinto as Commander Spock. This film features the crew from "The Original Series" but takes place in an alternate universe that's separate from the main "Star Trek" timeline. 

In this version of events, Kirk still becomes Captain of the USS Enterprise but his path to get there is brand new, which gives the writers freedom to explore different storylines with familiar characters. 

The Kelvin Timeline includes "Star Trek" (2009), "Star Trek Into Darkness" (2013), and "Star Trek Beyond" (2016). An upcoming fourth movie in the Kelvin Timeline is set to begin production in spring 2022.

Star Trek: The Animated Series

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine

A  Next Generation  spinoff,  Deep Space Nine  takes place on a space station near the planet Bajor with Commander Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks)  in charge of a diverse crew . Without the help of the USS Enterprise, Sisko and his crew are tasked to fight off rival alien species who want control of Deep Space Nine because of its strategic position to a nearby wormhole, which allows speedy travel to the far reaches of space.

• Star Trek: Discovery

Discovery begins with the Starfleet crew embarking on missions to discover new worlds and new life forms, and one Starfleet officer, Michael Burnham ( Sonequa Martin-Green ) must learn that to truly understand all things alien, you must first understand yourself . The second season sees the USS Discovery crew joining forces with the USS Enterprise , led by Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) on a new mission to investigate seven mysterious red signals and the appearance of an unknown being called the Red Angel. While the crews must work together to unravel their meaning and origin, Michael is forced to face her past with the return of her estranged brother, Spock (Ethan Peck). Season 3 transports Michael and the Discovery crew on a brand new journey hundreds of years into the future as they carve their own path.

Star Trek: Enterprise

Set over 100 years before Captain James T. Kirk takes over the USS Enterprise, Enterprise follows the Enterprise NX-01, the first starship capable of warp 5, and explores the history of the interplanetary upheaval that eventually leads to the formation of the Federation. Scott Bakula’s Captain Jonathan Archer leads the crew.

4 seasons, 98 episodes (2001-2005)

• Star Trek: Lower Decks

Set in the year 2380 on Starfleet's least important ship, the animated comedy follows the shenanigans aboard the USS Cerritos, with Jack Quaid voicing Ensign Brad Boimler and Tawny Newsome as the Romulan whiskey-swigging Ensign Beckett Mariner, plus Noël Wells, Eugene Cordero, Dawnn Lewis and Jerry O’Connell .

2 seasons, 20 episodes (2020-present)

• Star Trek: The Next Generation

The Next Generation picks up the action 78 years after the original Star Trek, with Patrick Stewart leading the charge as Captain Jean-Luc Picard. Featuring a bigger and better USS Enterprise with a more mature captain at the helm, Next Generation follows a diverse crew of various humans and alien creatures in their adventures in space: the final frontier.

Star Trek: The Original Series

The original iconic Star Trek series follows the crew of the USS Enterprise as it completes missions in the 23rd century. Go along for the ride as Captain James T. Kirk ( William Shatner ), along with Enterprise crewmates Spock ( Leonard Nimoy ), Dr. "Bones" McCoy (DeForest Kelley), Ensign Pavel Chekov (Walter Koenig), Lt. Nyota Uhura ( Nichelle Nichols ), Lt. Hikaru Sulu ( George Takei ) and Lt. Cmdr. Montgomery "Scotty" Scott (James Doohan), confronts strange alien races -- friendly and hostile alike -- as they explore unknown worlds.

• Star Trek: Picard

Patrick Stewart returns as Jean-Luc Picard after two decades away on Picard , which finds the former Starfleet captain in the next chapter of his life. Set 20 years after the events of The Next Generation, Picard is reunited with a few familiar faces, including Brent Spiner’s Data, Jonathan Del Arco’s Hugh, Jonathan Frakes’ William Riker, Jeri Ryan’s Seven of Nine and Marina Sirtis’ Deanna Troi. "I felt it important that we put a lot of distance between Next Generation and what we're doing [on Picard]," Stewart said in January 2020 . "There was actually nothing that strange to be stepping into Star Trek: Picard because he's never actually left me. He's always been there. It's a relationship that I'm happy to continue. That's an understatement. I'm absolutely thrilled."

Star Trek: Short Treks

Conceived to serve as a bridge between seasons of Discovery and expanding the Star Trek universe, the series of 10- to 15-minute standalone shorts follow key characters from Discovery -- and new faces -- in their own stories. The second batch of Short Treks , released after season 2 of Discovery, features three USS Enterprise-focused shorts featuring Anson Mount (Captain Christopher Pike), Ethan Peck (Spock) and Rebecca Romijn (Number One), who will lead their own upcoming spinoff, Strange New Worlds.

2 seasons, 10 shorts (2018-2020)

Star Trek: Voyager

Voyager is the first Star Trek series with a female captain leading the Starfleet crew. Captain Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) captains a starship lost in space and must travel across an unexplored region of the galaxy to find its way back home. Along the way, the Voyager crew encounters different species they must deal with, but find that all their adventures only make them long for home even more.

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home is a sequel to the 1984 film, Star Trek III: The Search for Spock. Starring William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy and DeForest Kelley, the film follows Admiral James T. Kirk and his fugitive crew as they return to Earth in the midst of an aline probe. To save the planet, the crew has to travel back in time to 1986 San Francisco to visit the only creatures able to communicate with the aliens: humpback whales. 

Star Trek: Generations

Star Trek: Generations follows Captain Picard as he attempts to stop a deranged scientist who, years after a horrific space accident that may have killed Capt. Kirk, has a potentially deadly plan to reenter the site of the grisly incident. The film stars Patrick Stewart, William Shatner and Malcolm McDowell.

Star Trek: First Contact

Following a battle again the cybernetically-enhanced life forms known as the Borg, Captain Picard and the Enterprise crew travel back in time to the 21st century to prevent the Borg from ever making contact with Earth. Star Trek: First Contact stars Patrick Stewart, Jonathan Frakes and Brent Spiner.

Star Trek: Nemesis

On their way to Riker and Troi's wedding, Captain Picard takes the starship Enterprise on a detour to negotiate a peace treaty with the Romulans. But what the crew finds at the Romulan Empire is far from peaceful. Star Trek: Nemesis stars Patrick Stewart, Jonathan Frakes and Tom Hardy.

‘Star Trek: Voyager’ Cast: Where Are They Now?

Even if you’ve never watched a single episode of any Star Trek show, you could still name at least two actors from the franchise and be able to spit out at least two famous quotes spawned from them. If you have seen a few of the different series or are even a diehard Trekkie, you’ve heard of Star Trek: Voyager. 

While not the most famous run of the Star Trek franchise, it still played an important part during its years on the air. We break down what the cast members have been doing since they last finished their mission.

Star Trek: Voyager follows the crew through the challenge of being stuck 70,000 light-years away in the Delta Quadrant and trying to get back home to the Alpha Quadrant. Voyager also gives us the first time we see a female in the captain’s seat, with Captain Kathryn Janeway sitting at the helm.

Where does Voyager fall on the Star Trek Timeline?

If you want to know where this one lands on the chronological watching order (because that’s all that matters, right?) it depends if you want to include the movies and animated series in the lineup. The show hits anywhere from fifth to ninth in viewing order based on what you want to include.

On the fictional timeline, Star Trek: Voyager takes place during the years 2371 to 2378, so 20 years after the first journey with the crew. Though we all know there will be Star Trek movies and shows coming out for years to come, we could see this journey shift along the pecking order.

How long was the show on the air?

Filming for Star Trek: Voyager started in 1993, with the first episode airing on January 16th, 1995, on the then brand-new, now non-existent UPN (United Paramount Network). May 23rd, 2001 was the last voyage for this crew.

With a hearty seven-season run, Star Trek: Voyager beamed into our living rooms for an astounding 172 episodes over the years.

Why did Star Trek: Voyager get Cancelled?

Well, actually, Star Trek: Voyager never officially got canceled. Like most shows at that time, seven seasons was about the shelf life. Though ratings did drop over time, and fans weren’t too happy with the direction of the show, Star Trek: Voyager was able to end on the note they wanted to.

Kate Mulgrew as ‘Admiral Kathryn Janeway’

Nominated for an Emmy and Golden Globe, and winner of an Obie, Critic’s Choice, and Saturn award, Kate Mulgrew has been gracing our screen for decades.

In the Star Trek universe alone Kate has reprised her role as Admiral Kathryn Janeway in 2002s Star Trek: Nemesis, 2004s Star Trek: The Experience – Borg Invasion, and most recently, in the 2021 animated return of the franchise Star Trek: Prodigy.

You may recognize her the most as Galina “Red” Reznikov in the hit Orange Is the New Black. You can keep up with Kate on her Instagram , where she is very active.

Robert Beltran as ‘Commander Chakotay’

Robert Beltran played Commander Chakotay on Star Trek: Voyager for the entire series. Before stepping on the Voyager, Robert had already been on the stage and screens big and small.

No stranger to TV, Robert has appeared on CSI: Miami, Medium, and Big Love, as well as dozens of TV movies.

Most recently Robert has used his voice to return as Commander Chakotay in Star Trek: Prodigy in 2022.

Roxann Dawson as ‘B’Elanna Torres’

Since Roxann Dawson played half-Klingon and half-human B’Elanna Torres on Star Trek: Voyager, she hasn’t really stopped working. The list of Roxann’s accomplishments and appearances on screen are way too numerous to count.

From writing plays, acting on stage, being part of documentaries, movies, TV shows, lending her voice to video games and audiobooks, and directing tv, Roxann has been one busy bee.

If you watch TV at all, Roxann has directed at least one episode of it. The last time Roxann truly graced the screen herself was in a 2011 episode of the hit show The Closer.

Robert Duncan McNeill as ‘Tom Paris’

Robert Duncan McNeill had already been acting for decades before he brought Tom Paris to life on Star Trek: Voyager. 

After Voyager he switched gears and did more directing than acting. Robert went on to direct a ton of episodes of early aughts mega-hits like Dawson’s Creek, One Tree Hill, The O.C., and Desperate Housewives.

 If you were obsessed with the show Chuck, Robert executive produced, produced, and directed the hit.

Ethan Phillips as ‘Neelix’

Ethan Phillips has steadily been on TV since the early 80s and hasn’t stopped since.

Before playing Neelix on Star Trek: Voyager, Ethan was in an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation in 1990 playing Dr. Farek, and after, in 2002, he was in an episode of Star Trek: Enterprise in 2002.

He also appeared in the miniseries Star Trek: Of Gods and Men. Outside of that franchise, Ethan can be seen in episodes of Bones, Mental, Veep, and Girls. Most recently he was in 2020s Avenue 5.

Robert Picardo as ‘The Doctor’

Possibly one of the most recognizable faces from the Voyager cast, Robert Picardo has been in just about every movie and TV show since the late 70s.

Playing The Doctor on Star Trek: Voyager wasn’t his first hit show, as he was nominated for an Emmy for his role on the late 80s hit The Wonder Years.

 Robert popped up in another sci-fi-star show, appearing on Stargate SG-1 from 2004 to 2007, and from 2006-2009 on Stargate Atlantis. In 2022 Roberts will lend his voice to the animated film MEAD.

He is very active on his Instagram and regularly post photos and videos of his life.

Jeri Ryan as ‘Seven of Nine’

Though portraying Seven of Nine on Star Trek: Voyager was Jeri Ryan’s first long-time TV role, she had been in episodes of shows like Who’s the Boss?, Matlock: The Fatal Seduction, and Melrose Place by then. 

Immediately following her run on Star Trek Jeri landed a leading role on the early 2000s drama Boston Public and then the drama Shark from 2006 to 2008.

Fans loved that Jeri picked back up her Seven of Nine role and is back in space on Star Trek: Picard with Sir Patrick Stewart.

Tim Russ as ‘Lieutenant Commander Tuvok’

Not only has Tim Russ played Lieutenant Commander Tuvok on Star Trek: Voyager, but he was in an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

Other notable runs for Tim were on shows like Samantha Who? and iCarly. You can see Tim more recently in the 2020 George Clooney directed sci-fi movie The Midnight Sky.

Tim is also a musician and has started the band ‘Tim Russ Crew’. They play a mix of pop rock, blues, old school and roots music. You can check out a sample of their music here .

Garrett Wang as ‘Harry Kim’

Playing Harry Kim on Star Trek: Voyager was Garrett Wang’s big break on television.

Since his Trek days, Garrett mostly sticks with the convention crowds, making appearances, being a celebrity moderator, and since 2010, being the Trek Track director for Dragon Con.

He currently co-hosts a podcast with fellow Voyager star Robert Duncan McNeill. You can follow him on Instagram , where he posts regularly.

Jennifer Lien as ‘Kes’

With a handful of shows under her belt by the time she landed the role of Kes on Star Trek: Voyager,  Jennifer Lien  was all over the TV in the 90s.

After the birth of her son, Jennifer decided to step away from acting in 2002 to be a mother, and hasn’t been on screen since.

Unfortunately, from 2015 to 2018 Lien had some trouble with the law and decided to keep away from the camera, opting to try to start a new life as a nutritionist.

Tarik Ergin as ‘Lieutenant Junior Grade Ayala’

Not everyone that makes it on screen wants to stay on, and that was the case for Tarik Ergin. After playing Lieutenant Junior Grade Ayala on Star Trek: Voyager, he pretty much stayed out of the spotlight.

He instead got back to his lacrosse roots. Having been a professional player in 2010, since 2011 he has been the Head Coach of the lacrosse Varsity team at Oak Park High School in California.

Scarlett Pomers as ‘Naomi Wildman’

Before Scarlett Pomers played Naomi Wildman on Star Trek: Voyager she started her career appearing in Michael Jackson’s 1992 hit “Heal the World” music video.

But since her days in space Kate has popped in shows like Providence, Judging Amy, and That’s Life. From 2001 to 2007 Kate snagged a main role on the hit show, Reba.

Majel Barrett (Voyager ship voice)

Once a Trekkie, always a Trekkie, and that was always true of Majel Barrett. It didn’t hurt that Majel’s husband was the creator of Star Trek, making her the official First Lady of the franchise. 

Not only was she the voice of the ship’s computer in Star Trek: Voyager, but Majel was in the original Star Trek pilot in 1965.

She played multiple characters throughout the decades, appearing in every Star Trek journey until we sadly lost Barrett in 2008 to leukemia.

The beginner's guide to Star Trek: What to watch first

The Star Trek television world consists of eleven full and distinct television series released across the decades, going all the way back to the mid-1960s. While some of the older sets and effects are certainly dated, some of the issues the shows grappled with back in the day are as relevant now as they were almost 60 years ago.

When Star Trek debuted on September 6, 1966, it was a relatively low-budget TV series with only lukewarm network support. It took two pilot episodes before the series was picked up by NBC, only to be unceremoniously cancelled three years later. Nobody back then knew that Star Trek would create cultural touchstones and iconic characters, or that it would go on to spawn ten more TV series (so far) and thirteen movies (also, so far).

Today, Star Trek is deeply entrenched in modern mythology, with characters like James T. Kirk and Jean-Luc Picard as familiar to us as Clark Kent, Bruce Wayne, Tony Stark, Luke Skywalker, and Han Solo.

But not everyone is fully up to speed on all things Trek . Perhaps you're seeing promotions for the new shows coming out this year and wonder what all the fuss is about. Perhaps you want to introduce Star Trek to a younger generation or catch up after a long hiatus.

No matter what, we're here to help. In this guide, I'm going to take you through the TV series and help you understand what each is about, give you some hints about watching order, and share with you my subjective perspective on the shows.

Star Trek has inspired a tremendous amount of media. Beyond the TV shows, there are movies, video games, books, comics, fan fiction and productions, collectables, and more. Because the commercial world of Star Trek fandom is so huge, I'm going to limit our discussion to just the TV shows -- although there will be a few mentions of one or two movies that are requisite viewing for later series' continuity.

How to get started

There are four Star Trek series currently in production right now. More are rumored to be on the way. And there's even a Seth McFarland-helmed homage to Star Trek called The Orville that carries on the Trek spirit (new episodes will be broadcast on Hulu in June).

So, you could get started watching a current show, especially since the visuals and production quality are top-notch. If you feel strongly about starting with new material, I'd recommend kicking off your watching with Star Trek: Strange New Worlds on the Paramount+ streaming service. I'll talk more about SNW (most Trek series get abbreviations) in a bit. Another choice would be the gorgeous animated series Star Trek: Prodigy . It's intended to bring kids into the Star Trek universe, but it fires on all cylinders for adults just as well.

But I recommend you start where it all started: Star Trek , the original series ( TOS ) produced in the 1960s. It's here you'll meet Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock, Dr. McCoy, and Scotty the engineer. This is where it all began, and everything builds upon this fundamental mythology.

And with that, let's get started!

1. Star Trek: The Original Series (TOS)

The series that began it all.

This is it. The series that began it all. I recently rewatched the entire run of  TOS  after not having seen it in years, and the thing that made the biggest impression on me was how much they got right in those early years. Roddenberry was building a mythos out of thin air, and yet many of the foundational elements that  Star Trek  folks know and love today were written into those early shows.

Of course, Roddenberry didn't get it perfect right out of the gate. He did two pilots which introduced Captain Christopher Pike instead of Captain Kirk and a female "Number One" as second in command. This pilot, called " The Cage " never made it on the air but was repurposed into a two-parter late in the first season. You'll want to remember Pike and Number One because they're prominent in the new modern-day  Trek  series currently being released.

Some episodes of this very early series age well, while others are deeply cringeworthy. Because it's 1960s entertainment (and relatively low-budget entertainment at that), it can be a bit tedious at times. And yet, it touched on some really important themes.  Martin Luther King Jr. actually reached out to Nichelle Nichols , who  played Lt. Uhura , when she was considering leaving the show. He urged her to stay on because he saw her role as a very important inspiration.

Movies:  There were six movies made with the  TOS  cast. Of them, the best two are  The Wrath of Khan  (which sets up a lot of subsequent mythos) and  The Voyage Home , which is probably the most fun of them all.

2. Star Trek: The Next Generation (TNG)

The story forward 100 years.

Star Trek's  continuing popularity during the eighteen years after NBC cancelled the original series was unexpected.  Star Trek , that weird space show with the pointy-eared alien, turned out to have legs. It took ten years of fan pressure and conventions, but in 1979  Star Trek: The Motion Picture  was released. It was... not so good. But three more movies came out over the next eight years, and they were great. So the momentum was in place for a  Star Trek  reboot.

Rather than recasting the original characters, Roddenberry decided to move the story forward almost 100 years, create a version of the  Enterprise  starship whose interior decor most resembled a Marriott hotel in outer space, and give it warp nacelles and photon torpedos. This was  The Next Generation , with Captain Picard, first officer William Riker, the android Data, the boy wonder Wesley Crusher, his mom, the Klingon Worf, and unlucky-in-love engineer Geordi La Forge. Roddenberry even created the role of a mental health counsellor (Deanna Troy) as a key member of its bridge crew.

While Patrick Stewart's Picard was much more  Captain Stubing  than Shatner's Captain Kirk, there's no doubting this Shakespearean actor's talents. Brent Spiner, as the android-who-wants-to-be-human, was another standout performer. The first two seasons were a little rocky. Remember: back then, nobody knew whether this show would last, and the actors and showrunners were still trying to come to terms with how to move beyond  TOS . But subsequent years are among the best science (and societal) fiction you'll ever see on TV.

Movies:  There were four movies made with the  TNG  cast. The first one,  Generations , also included key members of the  TOS  cast. I recommend you watch  First Contact  because it's a really good movie. And you might want to watch  Nemesis  because it sets up some details you'll need in later series (but it's definitely  not  the best movie made).

Once you've watched  TOS  and  TNG , you're pretty much ready to travel wherever you want throughout the  Star Trek  franchise. You'll have a good foundational understanding of the Federation, the various alien species, the rules and regulations of Starfleet, and most of the iconic characters.

My recommendation is to wrap up the early  Trek  productions by taking in the two seasons of the first animated series. Then, move on to the middle period of  Star Trek  production, with  Voyager, Deep Space 9 , and  Enterprise , and then jump forward to the current productions. That's how I'm going to present the remaining series to you, but you can pretty much choose any order you want once you've made it this far.

3. Star Trek: The Animated Series (TAS)

Worthwhile animation with tos voices.

A few years after NBC canceled TOS , Roddenberry managed to convince studio heads to let him produce an animated version of the show. While it was considerably less expensive to produce than the live-action  Star Trek , the animated series was the most expensive animated show airing at the time, but that was mostly because nearly all the original series actors (Walter Koenig as Chekov was missing) lent their voices to the show.

While the series was intended as a kid's show, it hews pretty closely to classic  Star Trek  themes and can be considered a proper sequel to  TOS . Watching it in 2022 is a bit weird because cartoons from the 1970s definitely seem a bit weird to our 2022 mindset, but  TAS  is a worthwhile romp, especially since it features the voice work from the core actors who first made  Star Trek .

4. Star Trek: Deep Space 9 (DS9)

Thought-provoking, must-watch tv.

By many measures,  Star Trek: Deep Space 9  is as good as  Star Trek  (or science fiction overall, for that matter) gets. Rather than exploring strange new worlds and seeking out new life and new civilizations,  Deep Space 9  takes place mostly on the eponymous space station, Deep Space 9.

The station sits at the junction of a wormhole to the Gamma Quadrant (a far off part of space) and the planet Bajor, a planet previously occupied by Cardassians' warlike race (not to be confused with the Kardashians). DS9's leader is played by actor Avery Brooks, who starts off with the Starfleet rank of Commander and later gets promoted to Captain.  DS9  starts off slow but ends with a massive war and some of the best space battles ever put on film.

While there are a few silly episodes, most plotlines are tight, deep, and thought-provoking. Characters develop complex and compelling personalities. And the show takes some powerful swings at issues of the day, with  Far Beyond the Stars  an absolute standout showing issues of racism in 1950s America and yet fitting totally in with the rest of  DS9 . If anything can be considered must-watch TV, chock full of religious and political intrigue, it's  Star Trek: Deep Space 9 .

5. Star Trek: Voyager (VOY)

A female badass captain who guides her crew on the uss voyager.

• Trek Timeline Years:  2371-2378
• Episodes:  172

The series starts with the crew of the  Voyager  chasing after a Maquis raider ship in a rough part of space. Suddenly, both ships get pulled into a spatial distortion, only to wind up far, far away from home. A super-powerful being called the Caretaker brought both ships to the Delta quadrant as part of its quest to help a species it cared for.

The plot of the pilot is a bit convoluted, but the Captain Kathryn Janeway makes a decision that strands  Voyager  and the crew of the Maquis ship in the Delta quadrant. The voyage home will take 75 years. Kate Mulgrew was not the franchise's first choice for a Janeway captain. Instead, Geneviève Bujold was originally cast in the role, but she apparently  crashed and burned in a day and a half . That's fortunate because Mulgrew absolutely owns the part, turning the Janeway character into a tough, sensitive, compassionate, and absolutely kick-ass leader.

The  Voyager  crew becomes a blended crew with both Starfleet and Maquis. Early episodes playoff that dynamic, but the early crew conflicts tend to slip away as the series progresses and the crew coalesces. Throughout it all, the series is about how this crew survives all on its own, trying to find a way home and the adventures along the way.

6. Star Trek: Enterprise (ENT)

The start of the prime universe.

• Trek Timeline Years:  2151-2161

With  Enterprise  (the series debuted without the " Star Trek: " prefix), we're starting to move around the "Prime Universe" timeline. So, okay, some definitions are in order. In 2009, J. J. Abrams did a reboot of the original  Star Trek  crew in a three-movie set. That reboot changed some of the  Star Trek  canon (its established mythology) and became known as the "Kelvin Universe". All the  Star Trek  that exists in the unaltered (or mostly unaltered) mythology is called the "Prime Universe." All of the TV shows so far (but not all the movies) are considered Prime Universe.

In the Prime Universe,  series timelines span centuries . The majority of established canon takes place in the  TNG  era, which is 2364-2379.  TOS ,  Discovery , and  Strange New Worlds  take place 100 or so years earlier than  TNG , while  Discovery  eventually jumps to about a thousand years later. But  Enterprise  is a prequel to all of that, showcasing a ship just beginning to travel between the stars. It takes place starting in 2151, a century before the days of Kirk and Spock.

There are some nods to the idea that technology wasn't as advanced in 2151 as it was in later centuries, but since  Enterprise  itself was made 35 years after  TOS , the production value and effects made it seem somewhat more advanced. That will prove to be an ongoing problem with Trek prequels: what do you do when the real tech to produce the prequel is half a century more advanced? What do you do when the actual tech we have in our pockets seems far more advanced than the "future" tech shown in the early shows? Artistic license is used.

The  NX-01 Enterprise  is led by Captain Jonathan Archer (played by  Quantum Leap's  Scott Bakula) and his Number One is a Vulcan named T'Pol (played by Jolene Blalock). In  Enterprise's  time frame, trust between Earth and the Vulcans is tenuous, and that tension plays out over the series. Unfortunately,  Enterprise  only lasted four seasons. It, like most other  Trek , was a bit rocky in the first seasons, but by Season 4, it was producing excellent television.

My biggest question about Enterprise is about Porthos, Archer's adorable beagle. Porthos spent most of his time in Archer's cabin, but I've always been curious about how Porthos took care of business. Did they just walk him around the decks and some crewmember cleaned it up? Was there a spot of grass somewhere in an unused cabin? It keeps me up at night.

In any case, I consider  Enterprise  criminally underrated. It was a great show.

7. Star Trek: Discovery (DIS)

Discover the fun in star trek.

• Production Years:  2017-current
• Trek Timeline Years:  2255-2259, 3188-3190 (so far)
• Seasons:  4 (so far)
• Episodes:  55 (so far)

Star Trek  production effectively went into shutdown for about a decade after  Enterprise . After the success of the reboot movies in the late 2000s,  Star Trek  TV experienced a resurgence in  Discovery .  Discovery  is a hard beast to pin down, and this had the effect of turning off some of the entrenched  Star Trek  fanbase. That said, it's still great TV.  Discovery  was the first of the modern-day  Star Trek  series to be available solely on streaming, via what was then CBS All Access and is now Paramount+.

Somehow (spoiler alert), Micheal Burham goes from the Federation's first mutineer with a life sentence to a beloved starship captain. Burnham is Spock's human sister (yeah, that was a surprise to everyone). Played by Sonequa Martin-Green, the standout feature of  Discovery  is some of its great performances and characterizations.

My favorites are the gangly alien Saru (played with absolute perfection by Doug Jones), the mirror universe emperor Georgiou (played with scenery-eating intensity by Michelle Yeoh), cranky under-utilized engineer Jett Reno (played by the wonderful-in-anything Tigg Notaro), and Captain Christopher Pike, reimagined from the pilot for  TOS  (who was played to such perfection by Anson Mount that the minute he hit the screen, everyone knew a series had to be made around him -- which became  Strange New Worlds ).

The first season takes place ten years before the original series. Klingons don't really look like Klingons, Burnham starts a war,  Discovery  travels to the mirror universe where everything is  Bizarro World , and chaos ensues. The second season is back in the home universe where the crew tries to stop an AI bent on destroying all life in the universe. To avoid that fate, the crew travels 930 years into the future and...okay, let's take a breather for a second.

Do. Not. Try. To. Make. Sense. Of. All. This.  Discovery  is weird enough to be pretty much the  Twin Peaks  of  Star Trek . Just enjoy the fact that the visuals are impressive, the characters (at least most of them) are great, and the stories hold together long enough to make it through each episode as long as you don't think about it too much.  Discovery  can be annoying and sappy, to be sure. But it's also a heck of a lot of fun.

8. Star Trek: Lower Decks (LD)

Focus on life onboard for low-ranking members of starfleet.

• Production Years:  2020-current
• Trek Timeline Years:  2380- (so far)
• Seasons:  2 (so far)
• Episodes:  20 (so far)

Back in 1994, there was an episode of  TNG  called  Lower Decks . It focused on lower-ranking crew members and looked at what life onboard a starship was like for the non-hero characters of Starfleet. In 2020, Mike McMahan, previously known for his work on the animated comedy  Rick and Morty , took the lower decks concept into an entire animated  Star Trek  series.

And it works. McMahan also addressed a lot of fan complaints about  Discovery  by including an almost overwhelming array of  Star Trek   Easter eggs  as fan service in the series. If you've ever wondered about  Cetacean Ops , for example, McMahan has an entire episode devoted to Starfleet's underwater crew.

Overall,  Lower Decks  delivers fully  Star Trek  plots, along with a lot of genuinely funny moments. But it doesn't sacrifice good storytelling either for laughs or nostalgia.

9. Star Trek: Prodigy (PRO)

Animated and visually stunning.

• Seasons:  1 (so far)
• Episodes:  9 (so far)

Prodigy  is the second animated series currently in production. It has a completely different theme and art style from  Lower Decks  and is most definitely its own thing.

The premise is that a bunch of enslaved tweenagers of varying non-human species in the Delta Quadrant find a dormant Federation starship. While exploring, they activate the "emergency training hologram," which turns out to be an animated Captain Janeway (voiced by Kate Mulgrew herself). Hologram Janeway thinks the interlopers are cadets and helps them start the ship up so they can make their escape.

The series is Nickelodeon-branded and is supposed to be for kids, but the episodes are well-written and even suspenseful. The first season ended on a cliffhanger that both newbies to  Star Trek  and long-time fans will find compelling. And can we talk about the visuals? This series is just absolutely gorgeous. Watch it on the largest, brightest TV you can. It's that good.

10. Star Trek: Picard (PIC)

New adventures of an older captain picard.

• Episodes:  20 (so far)

The premise behind  Star Trek: Picard  is simple. Thirty years after  TNG , Admiral Picard goes back out into space for new adventures. Picard (and Patrick Stewart) are much older, and the series addresses the challenges of ageing and how someone who was once the galaxy's hero deals with becoming irrelevant -- just as events reach out to bring the retired admiral back onto center stage once again.

Have you noticed how most of the  Star Trek  series have three-letter abbreviations?  Star Trek: Picard's  should be WTF. There are moments in  Picard  that are wonderful. But a lot of  Picard  is just plain terrible. If you even try to think about all the plot holes and paradoxes in just the final episode of Season 2, you'll find your brain sucked into a wormhole. As much as it's an absolute pleasure to see Patrick Stewart in anything,  Star Trek: Picard  is undeniably the worst television  Star Trek  has yet produced.

Like all of the current-era  Star Trek , it's gorgeous. There's fan service everywhere, and we do get to meet some of the  TNG  characters again. More are promised for Season 3. But something went horribly wrong in the writers' room for the storylines in most of the episodes to be this convoluted, self-referential, internally inconsistent, and rather unbelievable (trust me, suspending disbelief often just doesn't work here). If anything, Season 2 is even more disastrous than Season 1, and that's saying something.

All that said, should you watch  Star Trek: Picard ? Of course. It's a hoot. Plus, the episode  Nepenthe  (where we get to meet a gray-haired Captain Riker and his wife, Deanna Troy, along with their daughter Kestra) makes the whole series worthwhile.

11. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (SNW)

Referential to established canon for entrenched trek fans.

• Trek Timeline Years:  2259- (so far)
• Seasons:  1 (so far)
• Episodes:  4 (so far)

Strange New Worlds  has been jokingly called the longest order from the pilot to series in television history, but there's some truth to that. The very first  TOS  pilot back in the 1960s spotlighted the main characters of  Strange New Worlds . As the legend goes, NBC didn't like those characters, so Roddenberry retooled and the result was Kirk, Spock, and McCoy.

Today, however, Anson Mount is center stage, along with Ethan Peck as the third actor to play Spock, and Rebecca Romijn playing Number One. We haven't seen too many episodes yet, but so far it's good. Really, really good. Sure, this  U.S.S. Enterprise  is supposed to be from a time ten years before Kirk's in  TOS , and it's far fancier. But that's what you get with 2022 budgets and CGI compared to the hand-me-downs that went into the original  Star Trek .

You can follow the story well enough without having seen any other  Star Trek , so it makes for a good first series. But it also is so reverently referential to established canon (while blazing its own way as well) that deeply entrenched Trek fans will undoubtedly enjoy it as well.

What are the worst to best Star Trek series?

This is a highly subjective list, but I know you're going to want to know. So here it is. My call for worst series to best. You'll be surprised.

10. Picard :  I had high hopes, I love the reunions, but the plots don't hold together if you think about it for just one minute.

9. The Original Series :  Yes, it started everything. And yes, they got a lot right. But some of it is just downright hard to watch.

8. The Animated Series :  Like  TOS , it's a rough ride to watch. Pacing is very late sixties.

7. Lower Decks :  I'm not a huge animation fan, and the silliness is a bit annoying.

6. Prodigy :   Prodigy  is gorgeous, and the plots hold together well. But I'm not as into it as I could be. Perhaps with more seasons.

5. The Next Generation :   TNG  defines  Star Trek , and while there are some great shows there, it's getting old. I'm just not that invested anymore.

4. Discovery :  I really like some of the characters and the modern visuals are spectacular. The focus on one character as a  Mary Sue  gets tiresome, as do the somewhat lazy resolutions for season-long mysteries.

3. Voyager :  Some of the premise broke down in early years, but the overall crew survival dynamic makes for worthwhile TV. I've become attached to some of the characters after watching them grow into their responsibilities.

2. Enterprise :  Yes, I consider  Enterprise  among the best  Star Trek  ever, even though it died an early death. From Archer's relationship with the Andorian commander Shran (played by the wonderful Jeffrey Combs) to some really excellent standalone episodes, I miss  Enterprise  more than any other series.

1. Deep Space 9 :  Yeah, this is just about the best science fiction you're going to find anywhere.

* Strange New Worlds :  I'm not rating  Strange New Worlds  yet. I've only seen a few episodes. But from what I've seen, it has the potential to be among the favorites.

Although we will be moving on from Enterprise for now, we will return to watch the skipped episodes and the series finale later. Even so, the two-parter above is near-universally considered a better end-point for this point in the story.

The Earth-Romulan War, which was first mentioned in the original 1960s series, occurs here. Enterprise intended to cover this starting in the fifth season, but was unfortunately cancelled after Season Four. While we don't get to see the conflict on screen, its impact is felt throughout Enterprise and beyond. During the war, Humans, Vulcans, Andorians, and Tellarites form a loosely structured Coalition of Planets which manages to push back the Romulans. This Coalition leads directly to…

…the formation of the United Federation of Planets, the primary political setting of the Star Trek franchise.

From this point on, Star Trek focuses on the Federation, depicting its periods of peace, war, expansion, and decline, which will set the agenda for much of the franchise.

Early 2230s

An adaptation of an (actual) ancient African legend, told to a young girl we will meet again later as an adult, this is our first “Short Treks” episode. These mini-episodes are not tied to any specific time or place in the Star Trek franchise and will appear occasionally throughout this list.

2233 - A sidenote about universes/timelines:

There are two main “universes” in the Star Trek franchise: the Kelvin timeline (consisting of three feature films) and the Prime timeline (covering everything else). This year, 2233, is when events occur which split the universe into the Kelvin and Prime timelines. For now, we will stay with the Prime timeline in this viewing order, but keep in mind the Kelvin timeline for later. Note that there is a third universe, the "Mirror" universe, and occasional alternate timelines. However, for simplicity, our visits there will not be separated from the Prime episodes.

After a quick Short Trek in which we meet a young ensign reporting to his new ship, we reach the very first Star Trek episode produced: The Cage, dating from 1964-65. Rejected by NBC for being "too cerebral," studio owner Lucille Ball convinced the network to give the show another chance at a pilot. While much of The Cage’s footage is reused in a later episode, "The Menagerie," we recommend that you don't skip either one. The character of Captain Pike becomes highly significant shortly, and both episodes offer valuable insights into him and Spock.

Viewing notes: When referring to the original 1960s "Star Trek," this guide uses the abbreviation TOS (The Original Series). TOS is available in two versions: the classic 1960s version and a CGI- enhanced remastered version made from 2006-08. The remastered versions do not alter the stories in any way making the version you choose a matter of personal preference.

We now begin Star Trek: Discovery, which is the seventh Star Trek series produced, but only the second series chronologically. It also is the first series to significantly revamp the visual designs, departing from the previous assumption that the 23rd century looked the same as it did in the original 1960s series. Discovery updates the designs, and we are trusted to accept that they have "always" looked this way, affecting uniforms, ships, alien makeup, and more. The Klingons, in particular, received a dramatic redesign, though it was significantly backtracked after the first season. These are not continuity issues, and should not be viewed as such, though we could certainly nitpick details if we chose to.

2266-Notes on The Original Series

Just to clarify - the original Star Trek will appear less advanced in terms of its designs and aesthetic compared to the other Star Trek shows we have watched so far, but this is only due to the limitations of television production at the time. This is not “true” in story terms - the technology and society in TOS should be read as on par with Discovery and Strange New Worlds, which all take place at roughly this point in the timeline, and the Enterprise, despite looking different, should be accepted as the exact same ship Pike commanded in Strange New Worlds.

As for the actual viewing order, to fully appreciate the development of the show, it's recommended to watch TOS in production order instead of by air date.  In general, don’t get too hung up on continuity with the rest of the franchise in these early days - they take quite a while to pin some stuff down that the rest of the franchise takes for granted.

The Menagerie is largely reedited from The Cage, which we watched a while back, but don’t skip it - after spending so much time with Spock and Pike since, this episode is absolutely essential.

We finish Kirk's Five-Year Mission with Star Trek: The Animated Series. Is TAS in continuity? Debatable. In later years, Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry liked to say it was not, but later works in the franchise certainly seemed to disagree, with Enterprise’s Vulcan arc as well as the first of the Kelvin films borrowing heavily from Yesteryear, Robert April appearing in Strange New Worlds, numerous references in Lower Decks, etc.,  so I see no reason not to consider it as canon as everything else. Besides, “La mort de l'auteur” means we don’t have to listen to Gene.

Movie time! Some background here. Paramount was planning on making a new network, and intended a new Star Trek series, "Star Trek Phase II", to anchor it. Scripts were written, sets were built, and actors cast. When network plans fell through, and Star Wars became a hit, they decided to take one of those scripts and streeeeeeeeeetch it out into a movie.

So…. Is it way too long for the amount of plot it has? Yes, though it has its charms. And isn’t it basically a retread of Nomad from the episode "The Changeling" anyway? It is. And hey, isn’t that the pedophile Dad from 7th Heaven? mm-hmm. Anyway, if you have access to it I recommend the Director’s Cut, in which pacing is much improved and some particularly flawed effects are redone, but either version works story-wise.

Following The Motion Picture, the franchise underwent a significant transformation with the release of the next film, adopting a different style and tone that many, including the author, believe resulted in the best Star Trek movie to date.

Or you can just not worry about it, and watch the whole film in one sitting when we reach 2371. 

We now jump forward 70-odd years to see a far more established Federation, and perhaps the most popular and beloved Star Trek series of all, Star Trek - The Next Generation. That said, it is extremely rough at the outset, so you’ll need to give it some time. I promise you, the series gets a lot better later on and absolutely earns the affection it still receives to this day.

This season introduces the most popular and iconic character of the entire Star Trek franchise: Riker’s Beard. More seriously, due to a writers strike this year the producers had to dip into episodes written for the early 70’s Phase II series that was never made. Will Riker and Troi were ALWAYS a revamp of the original plans for Will Decker and Ilia, but the season opener was literally written in the 70s with Ilia in the place of Troi.

The series doesn’t truly find its footing until Season 3, but “The Measure of a Man” is widely considered TNG’s first “great” episode, a sign of many more to come.

Like other shows in the franchise, it has a slow start, but once it gets going it’s a real joy. The events of this Short Trek set the events of Star Trek - Picard, which we’ll be coming to shortly, in motion.

Okay. Deep breath. In 2387 the Romulan sun goes supernova, devastating the Romulan empire. A failed attempt by Starfleet to help stop this accidentally sends the Romulan mining vessel Narada back to 2233, creating an alternate reality  known as the “Kelvin Universe” or “Kelvinverse.” We'll be watching the three movies set in this universe next. It's essential to note that this new timeline DOES NOT replace the original “Prime” timeline, which still exists as it always has and to which we will be returning shortly.

The USS Kelvin is destroyed by the Narada, newly arrived from the Prime Universe 2387. This begins the divergence from the Prime timeline.

Too action-oriented for some, and plot-holes galore, 2009’s “Star Trek” is not what I would want Star Trek to be all the time, but is a quite fun alternate take on the original series, with some great acting and effects. Don’t overthink the chronology and details of this batch of movies though, or you’ll start seeing all kinds of things that make no sense.

Miles Teller and Juno Temple star in The Offer , and recurring roles include Frank John Hughes as Frank Sinatra and Justin Chambers as Marlon Brando.

Reeves faces struggles and triumphs alike as he fights for justice, brings down criminals, and keeps his family safe in an ever-changing Wild West.

Lawmen: Bass Reeves has been praised for its fully fleshed-out portrait of Reeves, with much adulation going to Oyelowo and his layered performance. It stands out from Sheridan's Yellowstone series while also appealing to Western fans.

Attracting talent as major as Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren is no easy task, yet the pair's appearance in 1923 underscores the series' status as one of the best TV shows on Paramount+. The Western is a prequel to Yellowstone that centers on the Dutton family as they deal with events related to Western expansion in the 20th century , the Prohibition era, and the Great Depression.

Expanding the Dutton mythology, 1923 is a riveting story in its own right — proving that prequels don't have to be beholden to the original. While incredibly well received by audiences and critics alike, 1923 surprisingly hasn't had the same luck when it comes to awards as its parent show Yellowstone. However, it did receive a Golden Globe Nomination for Best Drama Television Series, and Helen Mirren also received the Golden Globe nod for Best Actress.

1923 attracted over 7 million viewers when it debuted, and is so far the most successful premier on Paramount+ so far (via Variety ).

There's no question that updated 32nd century design of the Breen refrigeration suits is a great upgrade for Star Trek: Discovery season 5 . The loss of the helmet's odd beak from the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine design makes them look sleeker and more like the armored warrior race that their reputation suggested. The main issue with the Breen in Discovery is that what's underneath the mask undermines the huge mystery that has surrounded the Breen since their introduction in DS9 . For years, Star Trek fans have speculated about what a Breen looks like underneath their armor, and now they discover it's a creature made of green Jell-O .

Worf's assertion that nobody had ever seen the face of a Breen and lived is undermined by Star Trek: Discovery season 5's love story . While the Breen remain secretive in "Mirrors", the very fact that L'ak shows his face out of love for Moll undermines the idea of an isolationist and secretive warrior race. Instead, it suggests that these implacable Star Trek: Deep Space Nine villains just need someone to love. This, combined with the confusing physiology of the newly-revealed Breen, means that the DS9 aliens in Discovery don't solve the mystery satisfyingly.

Star Trek: Discovery 's Breen design is a missed opportunity when compared to some of its other work in creating alien species. For example, Discovery season 4's antagonists, the non-humanoid Species 10-C felt alien in a way that Star Trek aliens had rarely felt since the days of TOS . With that in mind, Discovery could have really thought out of the box when it came to what was inside the Breen's refrigeration suits. Sadly, that isn't the case, as they're revealed to be that most enduring of sci-fi archetypes; the green man from outer space.

In an interview with The 7th Rule , Carlos Cisco spoke of the design of the Breen being inspired by " transparent deep sea fishes ."

The fact that the Breen are green humanoids is a missed opportunity, because the teases of the Breen in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine always hinted that they may not be a humanoid species at all . Their lack of circulatory system and reliance on refrigeration suits implied they were potentially higher beings that forced themselves into a humanoid form. While that's sort of the case with the gelatinous beings that have " evolved " past a solid form in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, it's hard not to feel underwhelmed by the Breen turning out to be yet another humanoid alien species in the canon.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, also known as DS9, is the fourth series in the long-running Sci-Fi franchise, Star Trek. DS9 was created by Rick Berman and Michael Piller, and stars Avery Brooks, René Auberjonois, Terry Farrell, and Cirroc Lofton. This particular series follows a group of individuals in a space station near a planet called Bajor.
