ROME & AMALFI COAST - 7 Days/ 6 Nights

My guides: Antonio, Emma. My travel experience with them was the best I’ve ever had- extremely helpful and knowledgeable of Italian history, culture, and store/restaurant recommendations. Great communication from them in terms of logistics as well. Hit a solid balance between group time and time for individual roaming in the many areas I toured. I traveled by myself on this tour and immediately felt welcomed and comfortable. Great value for the money; I can’t recommend this tour and these guides enough.

Sorrento, Pompei, Amalfi and Positano: 4 days escape from Rome

Great way to see alot over a short period of time. Would have liked to see better communication between tour operator and us. At time's we felt unsure about where to be. If it's your first time to any of these area's I would recommend taking a city tour while you are there. We did this in Sorrento and really got alot more understanding of the area. Overall it was a good tour just remember that this is not a hand held tour, you are on your own for parts of it.

Italy Family Holiday Tour

Italy Family Holiday

I took my 12 year old son on the Intrepid Family Adventure. We had an amazing time. The guide was helpful, considerate and lots of fun. Playing games with the kids in the pool and making sure everyone was comfortable and happy. The pace was fantastic for a family with the mornings full of exploring with the group and the afternoons reserved for free time for families to spend together. Our highlight was the sailing trip to Capri. Can't recommend highly enough

Our trip to the Amalfi Coast, Pompeii and Sorrento was great. The tour guides were very well organised and led three very good tours for us. Each tour was of a different theme and this made for an interesting few days. Our accommodation at the Grand Hotel Vesuvio was very comfortable, and the pool on a hot day was an added bonus. The staff were very nice and most helpful.

The tour was great. The one thing I would definitely not do, is stay at La Ninfa in Amalfi. Rude and unhelpful manager there at that hotel. La Ninfa is also up the hill quite a way, but without a very long walk or a 20 Euro cab ride you can’t get to it.

We had a marvelous experience in western coastal Italy. 70-year-old grandparents traveling with 15-year- old grandchildren were able to relax about details because we were met on time in the promised locations and transported safely to beautiful places. Our accommodations were lovely!

Really great itinerary, lots of different activities to choose from and lots of information from the guides. Accommodation and meals really good, no complaints. Only thing I would say, need to know how many steps up front he Sorrento Ferry, as it was difficult for me to climb up and keep up with the group. Feel others need to know or alternative ways to reach the bus.

Liked most of the tour. Local guide for coliseum didn't show, so much context was lost. Naples walking tour not very interesting- would have preferred time in the museum. Walk Of the Gods was very, very difficult. Only very fit people should attempt it. Hotels were fine. Was angry that we got no notification that the first hotel was changed to another. We showed up at the original and it took a while for them to figure out where we belonged. Guide was very helpful and patient. Locations were lovely.

We were very happy with the accommodation and guides. We thoroughly enjoyed our trip. Our only disappointment was the food at the Hotel Vesuvius. It was really terrible. Perhaps for the British people? Pizza, pasta, gnocchi? Nowhere to be seen. We suggest a different menu option for those who want Italian food.

We thought the Tour was very well organized and well done. It was our 30 year anniversary iand our first trip to Italy. There were a few hiccups, but each time I was able to reach somebody who tried to help us, I especially liked the way all the transfers and rides were conducted with people meeting us there and the coordination between your team members on our transfer was fabulous. Thank you so much. We will definitely use you again! Ciao

What people love about Amalfi Coast Tours from Rome

Best decision if you're travelling alone and open to meeting new people. Our tour guide, Giovanni was the best - you can tell he enjoys what he's doing. He was really helpful and inclusive. The Amalfi coast, Sorrento, and Capri was the best part. Opted for the extra package with the Capri chairlift and Sorrento dinner which is so worth it.
Very good trip. Pick ups all on time. Hotel exceptional

Where Exactly is the Amalfi Coast?

Day 1: positano, amalfi & ravello, day 2: day trip to capri, day 3: relax on the amalfi coast or see pompeii, where to stay on the amalfi coast, getting around the amalfi coast, more than 3 days on the amalfi coast, what to pack for this 3 day amalfi coast itinerary.

The Amalfi Coast is the roughly 50-kilometer coastline that runs along the southern portion of the Sorrentine peninsula in Campania, Italy. It is framed by the Tyrrhenian Sea, or more specifically, by the Gulf of Salerno.

Technically speaking, places like Capri, Sorrento, and Salerno are not part of the Amalfi Coast, and of course, neither is Pompeii.

Small fishing boat tied up near Sorrento, Italy. Other boats are in the background.

However, the winding highway on the peninsula that runs from Sorrento to Salerno is considered the gateway to the Amalfi Coast.

Most people putting together a 3 day Amalfi Coast itinerary expect to spend time outside of the “true” Amalfi Coast–Sorrento is even frequently touted as the best base for first-time visitors to the area, despite not being on the Amalfi Coast at all!

For this reason, this 3 day Amalfi Coast itinerary is designed with a first-time visitor to the area in mind–someone who wants to experience both the Amalfi Coast itself and its incredibly famous surrounding sights.

For ease of writing, though, we’re going to stick with calling this an Amalfi Coast itinerary.

Where else to spend your first day on the Amalfi Coast than in the coast’s undisputed best-known towns?

There’s no better introduction to an Amalfi Coast itinerary than these places!

Start your morning in Positano and watch postcards come to life: this is probably one of the most photographed towns in all of Italy, and there’s a good reason why!

Browse through the many shops, grab a coffee overlooking the beach, and consider renting an umbrella and stretching out under the sun for a couple of hours.

You could also take a boat tour near Positano (or just rent a small boat to captain yourself), and enjoy the magnificent views from the water.

Photo of Positano, taken from the perspective of looking up from the beach. Positano is an essential stop on a Amalfi Coast itinerary!

Perched high in the cliffs of the Amalfi Coast is Ravello, known for its beautiful architecture, stunning views of the sea and coast, and its quiet, lovely atmosphere.

When you arrive, make a beeline for Villa Rufolo and its incredible gardens, which boast an absolutely amazing view of the Amalfi Coast.

If you have time, be sure to stop by Villa Cimbrone as well, as well as wander through Ravello’s beautiful streets.

It should come as no surprise that Amalfi, namesake of the Amalfi Coast itself, is the largest town along the coast, as well as one of the busiest! Close out the first day of your Amalfi Coast itinerary here with a visit to the city’s gorgeous cathedral (just don’t walk up the many stairs hand-in-hand with your partner, or legend says you’ll never get married!).

While you’re in Amalfi, be sure to also consider visiting the lovely Chiostro del Paradiso, and exploring the town’s lovely streets. As the largest and also one of the most level towns on the Amalfi Coast, it’s a less challenging exercise to meander here than, say, in Positano.

Want to make your first day on the Amalfi Coast easy and delightful? Book a fun Amalfi Coast tour that covers Positano, Ravello, and Amalfi today!

Glamorous Capri is among the best-known and most magnificent sights near the Amalfi Coast, and a 3 day Amalfi Coast itinerary would absolutely not be complete without a trip there!

Day tours to Capri are an excellent value, and we highly recommend considering one (we took one similar to this  from Sorrento and had a fantastic time), but whether you choose to go with a tour or visit independently, absolutely make sure that Capri is part of your Amalfi Coast trip!

Take a cruise around the grottos of the island (just don’t bother going inside the Blue Grotto–it’s an expensive time suck). Be awestruck by the views from Mount Solaro and the Garden of Augustus. Sip an Aperol Spritz in the Piazzetta. Stroll through Via San Michele.

On a sunny day, it’s hard to imagine any place on this planet more stunning than Capri.

With only a few days in the area to work with, any 3 day Amalfi Coast itinerary will require a little bit of sacrifice–so depending on your preferences, mood, and the weather, here’s our choose-your-own-adventure suggestions for the final day of your Amalfi Coast itinerary!

Day 3 Option 1: Nature & Relaxation

If your idea of the perfect final day on the Amalfi Coast is to enjoy beautiful views and relax outside, we recommend starting your day by hiking the Path of the Gods from Bomerano to Positano.

Once you get down all those many, many stairs to reach Positano, reward yourself with a hearty seafood lunch, a sfogliatella or three, and head to the beach to relax the afternoon away.

If you choose this option, we heartily recommend starting your hike as early as possible in the morning in order to avoid any congestion on the trail!

Day 3 Option 2: History & Sightseeing

If you’re more of a history buff than a hiker–or you simply wake up to cloudy weather and less-than-ideal hiking and beach conditions–another fantastic option for closing out your Amalfi Coast itinerary is to pay a visit to Pompeii.

Pompeii is one of the most famous archaeological sites in the world, and it truly defies words: you will not be squinting at ruins and imagining what might have been in Pompeii. You will be strolling down roads as well maintained as many modern ones, walking in and out of intact buildings, and truly walking through a ghost town–a thriving city that one fateful day in 79 AD, simply stopped.

Photo of trail along the crater of Vesuvius, with distant view of Capri on the upper right. There's a crooked wooden hand rail.

No day spent at Pompeii could ever be considered wasted, and if you get an early start, you’ll also likely have time to visit the crater of Mount Vesuvius (eerie and incredibly interesting, with stunning views of the coast), or Herculaneum (a smaller, wealthier city than middle-class Pompeii that met the same fate as its more famous neighbor, and is considered to be even better preserved).

This day trip is perfectly doable independently if you’re staying in Sorrento, but a guide truly does add so much context to these places–so for that reason and ease of transportation, definitely consider booking a guided tour of Pompeii .

Visiting Pompeii: Streets of Pompeii

Deciding where to stay when visiting the Amalfi Coast is often one of the most difficult parts about booking a trip. Not only is the area spread out and not incredibly simple to get around (it takes roughly an hour by bus to get from Positano to Amalfi, for example–it’s not exactly a hop, skip, and a jump away), and prices are high!

Sorrento is often touted as the best place for first-timers to the coast, and where we chose to stay on our first visit. If you’re hoping to visit Pompeii or want to easily arrive independently from Naples via train, we would definitely recommend it–but looking back, staying right on the Amalfi Coast probably would have been a better fit for our needs.

Couple on a balcony overlooking Positano

If you want to focus most of your time exclusively on the coast, Positano and Amalfi are the most iconic (and easily accessible) places to stay on the Amalfi Coast. Other spots like Praiano are also solid options, but be prepared to spend a lot of energy managing your transportation and/or renting a car for the duration of your stay.

I’ve outlined a few properties below to give you an idea of the kinds of prices and locations you’re looking at when visiting the Amalfi Coast–all of these places boast excellent reviews, but finding a location that is right for you is absolutely a matter of personal preference when designing your 3 day Amalfi Coast itinerary!

A quick word of advice: given that the Amalfi Coast is a destination that trends toward small towns and small buildings–and therefore small hotels and boutique properties–if you find somewhere you hope to stay, book it!

Popular hotels along the Amalfi Coast tend to sell out well in advance, especially during the summer in Italy , so if you have your heart set on staying in a particular property or town, we recommend staking your claim ASAP.

Sailboat in a small harbor along the Amalfi Coast, with other, smaller boats in the background.

Ulisse Deluxe Hostel (Sorrento) — Though this property is called a hostel, it feels much more like a spacious hotel, with private rooms and a huge (but expensive) breakfast spread–especially by Italy standards.

This is the property we stayed at during our first trip to the Amalfi Coast, and overall we were quite satisfied–the customer service was great, the room spacious and clean, the wifi decent.

It is a bit of a long walk (20 minutes or so) from the Sorrento train station, but the walk goes through the bulk of Sorrento and is pleasant enough!

Check rates & book your stay at Ulisse Deluxe Hostel!

Hotel Floridiana (Amalfi) — Located in the heart of Amalfi less than a 5-minute walk from each the ferry terminal, bus stop, and main square of the city, you couldn’t ask for a more central location in Amalfi than Hotel Floridiana.

Boasting near-perfect reviews and an excellent included breakfast, Hotel Floridiana is perfect for the mid-range traveler who is hoping to stay in the middle of the action of the Amalfi Coast without paying a luxury price tag.

Le Sirenuse (Positano) — One of the most iconic hotels along the Amalfi Coast, and arguably one of the most famous hotels in all of Italy, is the dreamy Le Sirenuse.

Home to truly magnificent views, a perfect location in Positano, first-class amenities, and the Michelin-starred La Sponda restaurant, Le Sirenuse is the perfect place to stay on the Amalfi Coast for those looking for a splurge–if you’re planning your 3 day Amalfi Coast itinerary as part of a honeymoon or anniversary trip, this just might be the hotel for you!

P.S. — If Le Sirenuse and La Sponda aren’t in the budget this trip but you still want to check out the views from this amazing property, head over to popular Franco’s Bar for a drink on their terrace!

Somewhat surprisingly, given the general ease of traveling around Italy, getting around the Amalfi Coast region is still a bit tricky to navigate.

Here’s the biggest thing to be aware of: trains do not exist on the Amalfi Coast. You can take a train as far as Sorrento or Salerno, but from there, you’ll need to travel by bus, boat, car, or tour.

You can take the train (specifically the Circumvesuviana) from Sorrento to Pompeii if you’re planning on visiting Pompeii, but that will be the extent of train rides during this 3 day Amalfi Coast itinerary.

Also, sidenote: the Circumvesuviana train is a well-known pickpocket hotspot, and we’ve personally seen the aftermath of someone getting their phone taken there–so be very careful!

Faraglioni of Capri as seen on a boat tour while visiting the Amalfi Coast area.

A day pass to ride the public buses along the Amalfi Coast for the day is the most cost-effective way to tour the coast… but it comes with significant drawbacks.

Not only do you have to be cognizant of the bus’ schedule, but you also have to contend with the fact that the buses fill up, and that you’ll often have to wait for several rounds (sometimes up to or over an hour) to actually board a bus.

And once you get on? Standing room only is definitely a possibility.

Because of these challenges, with only a 3 day Amalfi Coast itinerary to work with, we recommend looking into another option if it is available, especially when exploring multiple spots in one day along the Amalfi Coast. Alternatively, wake up very early and get the bulk of your travel done before most visitors arrive for the day!

Photo of bus along the Amalfi Coast, with seats on each side and aisle in the middle. The bus is the cheapest, but not simplest, way of navigating your way through a 3 days on the Amalfi Coast.

Ferries run between Positano, Amalfi, Capri, Sorrento, and Salerno, as well as other destinations along and near the Amalfi Coast.

However, the boats are season and weather dependent, so double-check what’s running the day of your visit (and preferably have a back-up plan).

Reaching Ravello by ferry is, of course, impossible due to its location high in the cliffs.

Couple on the bow of a boat bound for Capri.

Self-driving the Amalfi Coast by car (or even by Vespa!) is definitely an option–but only one we’d recommend to people who are very comfortable driving on narrow Italian roads with giant buses for company. The Amalfi Coast is not an easy drive.

Alternatively, you can hire a driver to take you on a private tour via car during the day.

Book a driver now to easily visit the Amalfi Coast!

Booking a tour to destinations on or near the Amalfi Coast is an excellent option if you don’t want to self-drive or navigate the area’s limited public transportation options (ie, risk waiting a long time for a bus and/or being stuck standing on a bus for an hour’s drive).

For the first day of this 3 day Amalfi Coast itinerary, for example, this tour is extremely popular, very well-reviewed and is an excellent and easy way to see all Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello in one day.

Book your tour of Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello today!

View of Marina Piccola, Sorrento, with white tables with people eating at them in the foreground. If you have extra time for your Amalfi Coast itinerary, be sure to see Sorrento.

If you’re lucky enough to have longer than 3 days on the Amalfi Coast, you’re in for even more of a treat!

Consider adding a visit to Sorrento to your Amalfi Coast itinerary, which is a beautiful and relaxed town with incredible views of the Bay of Naples and Mount Vesuvius.

You could also consider visiting Naples which, while fairly considered to be a far less luxurious location than the Amalfi Coast, is an interesting and vibrant city that we love dearly–not to mention the home of some of the best pizza you will ever eat in your entire life.

The islands of Ischia and Procida, though a bit lesser-known than Capri, are also both gorgeous nearby escapes that make fabulous day trips during your trip to the Amalfi Coast area.

And, of course, there are plenty of things to do on the Amalfi Coast itself, especially if you’re looking for a more leisurely trip!

Consider chartering a boat from Positano for the day and admiring the famous city from the water, soaking in the views from Praiano, renting a Vespa to drive along the winding road of the Amalfi Coast yourself (though this is absolutely not for the inexperienced or faint of heart), or visit Italy’s only fjord, the Fiordo di Furore.

Travel Insurance — We don’t ever suggest traveling without travel insurance–anything can happen, and this is definitely a case of better safe than sorry. We use and recommend Safety Wing for trips to Italy.

3 day tour rome to amalfi coast

I was thrilled to have these along both during our boat cruise around Capri and when riding the bus along the Amalfi Coast’s winding roads.

International Driving Permit — If you’re coming from outside the EU and plan to rent a car when in Italy, you’ll need to make sure to acquire an International Driving Permit in your home country, before coming to Italy. It is required for all car rentals in Italy, including along the Amalfi Coast. While the rental company may not ask, it’s not worth the risk of being refused a car once you arrive or getting a fine if you’re pulled over to be without one.

hi- very informative ! wondering your thoughts , flying into rome for a cruise. plan on arriving 4 days early, should we rent a car and go straight to amalfi and then grab a tour guide each day? does this make sense? or, do you have a better suggestion from rome to amalfi ? thanks, faith

Hi Faith! I’d recommend either renting a car or booking tour guides each day–you probably won’t need both! If you don’t want to drive on the Amalfi Coast (it can be a bit harrowing), you could take the train from Rome to Naples or Sorrento and then book a transfer to the Amalfi Coast from there. I’m sure there’s also a way to book transport directly from Rome as well.

If you’d like to go all the way to the Amalfi Coast independently, you could take a bus or ferry from Sorrento to the coast.

Your website is amazing! Your itineraries and recommendations of places to stay have helped me so much planning for an upcoming trip. Such great tips, greatly appreciated!

Thanks so much!

So glad we could help, Brian! Hope you guys have an amazing trip!

Hi, I’m hoping to plan an Italy trip next summer (2022) and would like to stop and see the Amalfi coast. I’d like to stay in the town of Amalfi. I notice that your itinerary has only one day is spent visiting the Positano, Amalfi and Ravello and one day in Capri. Is that sufficient time for those 4 places? My thought was to spend 3-4 days and have Amalfi as my home base. And do you know of a website that shows where the ferries run in this area? Thanks in advance

“Enough” time is kind of a moving concept–if you only have a few days in the area, it’s enough to see the biggest highlights. If you have a full summer to spend there, even better, but most of our readers don’t! 🙂

There are several companies that run ferries in the area, they’ll pop up on an internet search. I’m not aware of a website that combines them all, though.

Excellent information — thank you so much for being such an amazing source of advice and inspiration. I am glad that I discovered you — I will resort on you prior to every trip.

BTW, Le Sirenuse is only for millionaires — prices are so incredible!!

So glad we could help, Andres!

Luxury on the Amalfi Coast really is another level–side effects of being a hotspot for the rich, famous, and connected for a couple thousand years!

This is such an amazing review. I was looking to book something for my husband’s 50th and I think I have made up my mind. Did you book everything separately or did you go through an agent?

Thanks, Joanne!

Yes, we always book everything ourselves. 🙂

We do book day trips and activities as they make sense, and I linked our recommendations for those throughout the post!

Hey Kate Loved the article. Thank you. We are two couples in our 60’s (in good shape) We are coming from Rome. We have 3 days to visit Amalfi this April. My wife really wants to see Pompeii for a day. I’m thinking about using Sorrento as a base town. Do you think this makes sense? Can you offer a mid to upper priced hotel for us to say in. What should we do the other two days? Thanks for the advise. Happy travels, Jim

Sorrento definitely makes sense for a base for you guys! You can easily visit Pompeii one day, the Amalfi Coast another, and then on the third, the sky is the limit. A few options could be taking a day trip to Capri, relaxing in Sorrento itself, heading back to the Amalfi Coast for another day, visiting Herculaneum, and exploring Ischia.

We have a guide to day trips from Sorrento that has a few more ideas: https://www.ourescapeclause.com/day-trips-from-sorrento-italy/

The hotel we stayed in when visiting Sorrento was more of a budget-to-mid-range pick, but Hotel Antiche Mura is on our list of possible properties to stay in if we’re in the mood to splurge when we go back. 🙂

Day 1 Rome – Naples – Pompeii – Amalfi

See southern Italy highlights on your first day minitour from Rome. Departure by coach heading south crossing the regions of Lazio and Campania. The first stop is Naples, one of the most enchanting cities in the Mediterranean famous worldwide for its rich history, art, culture and gastronomy, where you will take a short panoramic tour to discover its beauty from the comfort of your coach climbing up the Vomero hill. The town overlooks the bay of Naples which extends from the Sorrento peninsula to volcanic area of Phlegrean fields, and the skyline is dominated by the majestic and still active volcano Vesuvius, offering an impressive sight perfect to take stunning pictures.

From Naples you will travel south towards Mount Vesuvius and, once you reach the town of Pompeii, you will have lunch with the real Neapolitan pizza! After lunch, you will enter into one of the most important archaeological sites in the world: a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the ruins of Pompeii, with Skip the Line entrance and a guided tour. Through the remains and ruins of this ancient city you will learn how the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD destroyed the city, killing its inhabitants and burying it under tons of ash. The site was lost for about 1,500 years until its initial rediscovery and the objects beneath the city have been well- preserved for centuries. So you can walk along the ancient streets for a glimpse into the lives of the Romans, discovering ancient houses, bakeries and shops and imagine the everyday life in the Roman times.

Leaving Pompeii, you will drive along the Sorrentine Coast, arriving to Amalfi. Check-in at your hotel. Overnight.

Day 2 Amalfi

Enjoy a leisurely day exploring the wonderful ancient Capital of the Maritime Republic of Amalfi, taking in the city’s main sites, plunging into the waters of the gulf of Salerno, or sipping on some of the locally-produced limoncello. Return to your hotel for some well- deserved rest. Overnight.

Day 3 Amalfi – Rome

After breakfast at your hotel, spend a leisurely morning doing some last minute sightseeing or some shopping in Amalfi. Around 3:00 in the afternoon, transfer to Pompeii where you will join another group for your trip back to ROME. Traffic permitting, the estimated time of arrival is 9.00pm.

Tour description

Spend the perfect day on the amalfi coast on a carefully curated tour from rome..

Most Amalfi Coast tours from Rome stick to the roads, seeing the crystal-clear waters of the coastline from above but hardly glimpsing its cliffside towns at all. This tour is different. You’ll take in the breathtaking coast from both land and sea for the most complete experience possible! Touring the Amalfi Coast on the water, you’ll have perfect views of the coastline’s most famous asset: its colorful towns. Along the way, you'll step onto dry land for an authentic limoncello tasting in a pretty orchard with stunning views. You’ll also explore the idyllic streets of both Amalfi Town and Positano with plenty of opportunities to go sightseeing, do a bit of shopping, and maybe even splash in the sea if the mood takes you.

Carefully balancing the value and expertise of a guided tour with free time to explore and shop at your own pace, our full-day Amalfi Coast tour from Rome offers you the perfect day in paradise without the hassle of organizing your own trains, cars, and ferry rides.

Head from Rome to the Amalfi Coast by train with a guide by your side.

Your Amalfi Coast tour from Rome meets early in the morning at Termini train station. Meet your friendly English-speaking guide and set off on a comfortable 90-minute journey by high-speed train. After arriving in Salerno, you’ll board a small ferry and relax as you watch the stunning Amalfi coastline stretch out before you, giving you a panoramic snapshot of the sights to come.

Go boat-hopping and taste homemade limoncello for an authentic Amalfi experience.

Now it’s time for a little touring on foot. Climbing ashore at Amalfi town, you’ll slip away from the crowds as you follow your guide uphill to a beautiful cliffside lemon orchard run by the same family for six generations. You'll walk through groves of fragrant lemon trees on this nature excursion just for your tour group as you learn what makes lemons from the Amalfi coast unique. With the coast and sea spread out below you, you’ll enjoy a demonstration and tasting of one of the region's most beloved products: sweet, tangy limoncello. Made right on the farm, there's nothing better. From there, you'll head back down to the streets of Amalfi with plenty of time to do a little strolling, shopping and snacking.

Putter around the picturesque town of Positano.

After more time spent cruising the water, the next port of call on your Amalfi Coast tour is Positano!

Following an orientation walk with your guide, you’ll have approximately two and a half hours of free time to explore the charming fishing village, a popular haunt among Hollywood’s biggest and brightest. Sample fresh seafood at a beachfront restaurant, shop the stylish boutiques, or simply slip into the sea for a quick splash!

As the afternoon draws to a close, you’ll meet your guide and board the boat one last time for a scenic cruise back to Salerno. Hop on a train for your return to Rome—you'll be back in the Eternal City just in time for dinner!

Please note: In the rare event of rough seas where it is impossible to travel by ferry, we will provide a private bus to take you up and down the coast so you won't miss a thing!

We are so very glad we did this tour! The lemon farm was a unique experience and we loved it. It is a tough climb but there is a break about one third of the way up. The Amalfi coast is breathtaking! Our tour guide Antonina was a delight! If I could change one thing it would be more time at Amalfi and less at positano.

Wow! Visiting the Amalfi Coast for a day after spending time in Rome was like another world! Our guide Roberta was knowledgeable and engaging. The hike to the top of the limoncello farm was difficult (200 large steps up), but worth it in the end, just take your time. The views at the top were incredible. We had a perfect amount of free time for lunch and exploring/shopping. The train/ferry were seamless thanks to Roberta. Would absolutely recommend this day trip to anyone staying in Rome looking for a unique experience and visit to the gorgeous Amalfi Coast!

Planning a day trip to Italy’s most celebrated coastline? Check out the very best Amalfi Coast Tours from Rome to visit the top sights of the region.

Renowned for its staggering coastline and colorful villages, the Amalfi Coast is considered one of the gems of Southern Italy. And it’s also one of the most coveted holiday destinations for both locals and tourists.

I was born and raised in Bologna , a city a few hours north of the Amalfi Coast, yet somehow I only visited this region for the first time a few years ago. And now I can see why everyone’s obsessed with it!

Picture of the Amalfi Coast, with the blue waters of the Gulf of Naples on the right

I always recommend spending at least 2-3 nights on the Amalfi Coast to explore it properly. It truly has a lot in store to offer its visitors.

However, I know that many people just can’t add extra days to their vacation – yet, they don’t want to leave Italy without visiting the famous coastline. Understandable!

If you’re planning a trip to Rome, have limited time, and want to explore this breathtaking region, a day tour is a perfect way to do it. In fact, I do NOT recommend going on a day trip from Rome on your own .

You can theoretically do it, but it will be a logistical nightmare and you’ll end up spending the vast majority of your time in trains, buses or ferries.

Our list of Amalfi Coast day tours is super comprehensive, offering excursions that include visits to Pompeii and Capri as well. This way, you can make the most of your time in the area!

Whether you’re interested in history, culture, or simply soaking up the beauty of the coastline, there’s a tour on this list that’s perfect for you . So sit back, relax, and let us guide you through the best Amalfi Coast tours from Rome.

I use Viator and Get Your Guide to book tours around the world, and I especially recommend them because of their cancellation policy. Both platforms allow you to cancel most activities up to 24 hours in advance and receive a full refund.

Limited time? These are the best tours

OUR PICK: The BEST Amalfi Coast Day Trip from Rome

The Boat-Hopping On The Amalfi Coast: Day Trip from Rome is a full-day excursion for small groups. You’ll leave the Eternal City on a fast-speed train, accompanied by a professional guide.

Upon reaching Salerno, you’ll board a ferry and cruise past the pastel-colored towns perched on the cliffs. It’s a sight to behold!

Stop for a visit in Amalfi Town, and head to a lemon orchard for a demonstration and tastings of limoncello. Then, make the most of your free time to wander around the enchanting town.

Your trip continues with another ferry ride to Positano, the quintessential village of the Amalfi Coast. Learn all the best spots from your guide, and then go explore on your own. Be sure to check out the viewpoints, and the cute shops!

At the end of the day, catch a boat to return to Salerno, where you’ll take the high-speed train back to Rome.

Why is this the best tour? It’s the perfect introduction to the Amalfi Coast, offering plenty of time to explore its major towns: Amalfi and Positano. You’ll enjoy not one, but three scenic ferry rides along the coastline, and you’ll even sample the famous limoncello liquor.

The Amalfi Coast is relaxing and beautiful, while Pompeii has a sordid, interesting history. They’re two very different places, despite being so close to one another.

You’ll have the opportunity to explore both in just one day with the Private Tour: Amalfi Coast and Pompeii Day Trip from Rome !

It’s no secret that Rome is constantly packed full of people like Target on Black Friday, so if you’d like to escape that high-energy environment for a day, this is just the ticket.

You’ll meet your guide at 7:00 am in your hotel lobby or in front of your accommodations – no need to worry about heading to a meet-up point! This is an intimate group tour of a maximum of just 6 people, so you can count on personalized attention from your guide.

Travel by climate-controlled minivan and head south to the Pompeii Archaeological Park – but before arriving, make a stop for a tasty breakfast! Once you arrive to Pompeii, you’ll learn all about the 79AD eruption of Mount Vesuvius, which buried the city in tons of lava and ash.

Due to this, however, the city was nearly perfectly-preserved – explore the Macellu food market, thermal baths, dining areas, and more.

Take a break at the Positano Paradise Lounge Bar, where you’ll stop for a tasty lunch, free time, and some shopping (if you’d like). After refueling, take an engaging tour through Positano and Amalfi, learning about famous pottery, limoncello, and much more!

Limited to a max of 14 participants, you’ll receive a personalized experience rather than just being another head in a crowd full of people.

Just like the previous tour, this one starts off by you being picked up at your hotel lobby or other accommodations, so you don’t have to deal with booking separate transportation.

Head towards the Bay of Naples, as you sit back and enjoy the wonderful Italian landscapes out the large windows. Your live guide is very knowledgeable about the area and will provide an educational commentary, answering any questions you may have along the way.

Once you arrive to Pompeii, you’ll meet up with an expert guide of the city and it’s intense history. The incredibly intact Roman city was surprisingly preserved by the thick ash that rained down on it unexpectedly during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, which looms over it today.

See some of the most notable areas like the food market, thermal bath, as well as other locations to give you insight into the daily life back then.

From Pompeii, you’ll visit a delicious restaurant and absorb everything you just saw and learned in Pompeii before heading to the seaside towns of Positano and Amalfi.

These picturesque places have an incredible atmosphere and their own histories, which you’ll learn about. The architecture, the food, the limoncello – it’s an incredible adventure that you’ll surely have to repeat!

4. Amalfi Coast Small-Group Day Trip from Rome Including Positano

  • Departure:  Via Marsala, 46, 00185 Roma
  • Includes:  Roundtrip high-speed train tickets Rome – Salerno, Ferry tickets

The Amalfi Coast is full of gorgeous towns and residencies, sitting above winding streets with tight turns overlooking the water. This means that it’s not exactly ideal for large group tours like you’d see in cities like Rome or Milan.

Instead, try the Amalfi Coast Small-Group Day Trip from Rome Including Positano tour , where your small group will explore all the hidden gems this stunning region has to offer!

Italy has so much to offer, but thanks to trains, you can easily see it all with this excursion. Travel by train from Rome to Naples (also a fantastic city to explore if you have time!), and then to the alluring town of Positano, with its colorful, cliffside villas.

Make sure to take some time and explore its little boutiques and quintessentially Italian beaches before heading on over to Amalfi.

Amalfi is simply breathtaking, from the mouthwatering cuisine, to the intricate Mediterranean architecture at every turn. The dramatic scenery will make you feel like you’re in a movie, and your tour guide will guide you through all the most interesting parts.

They know this village like the back of their hand, and will tell you all about how it was founded by a Roman family headed for Constantinople, along with its artistic draw.

After you’ve taken your fill of knowledge, you’ll have some time to venture at your own leisure. Some people enjoy shopping in the unique boutiques for souvenirs, clothing, handmade leather sandals, or want to grab a traditional Mediterranean lunch!

The gelato here is phenomenal, and somehow even tastier on a hot, summer day overlooking the turquoise sea – you won’t regret it, that’s for sure!

5. Small-Group Tour: Amalfi Coast and Pompeii Day Trip from Rome

  • Duration: 10 hours
  • Includes:  Free transfer offered by Welcome Italy in air conditioned minivan, English-speaking tour guide, Limoncello tasting, skip the line in Pompei

Lastly, we can’t have a guide on the best Amalfi Coast tours and not include this next one! The Small-Group Tour: Amalfi Coast and Pompeii Day Trip from Rome  is the shortest one on our guide, clocking in at 10 hours.

However, if you’re not up for (or have the time for) the longer ones, this alternative is a fantastic option and one of the easiest ways to access this area from Rome.

If you book tours to both Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast separately, it’s likely going to take you a whole lot longer than 10 hours to see everything. Not to mention, much more expensive!

This well-organized tour is put on by pros who are genuinely passionate about the subject and know how to provide fantastic customer service.

You’ll start out by getting picked up at your hotel at 7:00 am, so you get to enjoy all the daylight! Your first stop of the day is the Pompeii Archaeological Park, which is a UNESCO heritage site consisting of the Pompeii excavations from the volcanic ash.

You’ll learn how this city came to become buried, its preservation for hundreds of years, and the subsequent archaeological digs that discovered it all.

You’ll then head to Positano for an optional lunch stop and a much lighter note of limoncello tastings. Limoncello actually comes from this area of Italy, and you’ll learn what goes into making the deliciously tangy liquer!

Next, continue on the picturesque Amalfi Coast, where you’ll get to see the dramatic villages of Amalfi, Maiori, Vietri Sul Mare, and many more. Learn about each one from your guide as you pass by, and take intermittent stops for pictures.

What to Expect at Pompeii?

That’s a great question! After all, this city has a rather sordid history, which is what brings in so many visitors from around the globe each year. Understandably, it’s a good idea to show  respect, no matter what. Here are some tips that will help you out:

–   Don’t Go In Blindly:  Really listen to your guide once you’re here – zoning out or going off on your own won’t offer much context for you, and this is definitely a place where you need to know what you’re seeing. Your guide will show you the most interesting parts of this ancient Roman town, along with some cool stories and anecdotes.

– Be Prepared for Spontaneity:  That may sound a bit counterintuitive, but let us explain. Pompeii is an active archaeological site, which means that there are new discoveries happening all the time. Pretty cool, right? What that also means is that it’s not uncommon for certain areas to be closed, while previously-closed areas open up. It’s actually kind of cool to find out that doors are unexpectedly unlocked that day, making each experience a different one.

– Appreciate the Art:  It’s wonderful how well so much ancient art was preserved in Pompeii. You’ll see everything from depictions of things like Hercules to Alexander the Great, and it really enriches the experience to see the way so many locals thought during this period. If you really appreciate art a day trip to Florence is also in order!

– Hydrate:  No matter what the time of year (but  especially  during the summer), you should bring a bottle of water as there is little-to-no shade out there. Don’t be afraid to bring some sunglasses and a hat along to protect your face and eyes from the sun.

– Wear Good Walking Shoes:  Ideally, you want something with a good grip. Flip-flops, slides, heels – those aren’t going to work very well for you. You’re going to either end up with blisters or a twisted ankle. Wearing flat shoes will help you cover more ground, and will just be more comfortable.

Sites Along Amalfi Coast

Italy is just a small fraction of the size of the United States, but it’s impressive how much culture and beauty can fit into just the Amalfi Coast, alone. Let’s go over the sites you can expect to see on your Amalfi Coast tour!

1. Positano – This westernmost town is known as being a fishing village with plenty of charm. It’s also known for its trendy fashion, being a celebrity destination, and is no stranger to yacht parties. The pastel-colored villas are beautiful, and we’ve never seen anything quite like it. The 13th-century Santa Maria Assunta church is of particular draw, with its dome sporting majolica tiles and the Byzantine Black Madonna.

2. Amalfi – Couldn’t have guessed this one, huh? Amalfi is so rich in flavor, culture, art, and natural beauty. We hope you enjoy the smell of flowers, because they seem to be cascading everywhere, with the blue sea in the background. The Duomo di Sant’Andrea sits overlooking it all, with a very similar dom to that of the Santa Maria Assunta. Learn all about its centuries-old paper-making traditions as well as Limoncello!

3. Ravello – Ravello feels like you’ve been transported back in time, with its lush gardens surrounding very old, traditional Roman architecture. Churches, monasteries, villas, palaces – it’s packed with 12th-and-13th-century icons.

4. Salerno – Now we’re at the eastern end of the peninsula, which was once the seat of the Fascists during WWII. While the inevitable bombing and invasion left much of it in ruins, you can still see the Castello di Arechi up on a hill, as well as some Roman aqueduct sections, and a beautiful cathedral.

Rome to Amalfi Coast Day Trip by Boat, Train or Car

Don’t think you can complete a relaxing, Rome to Amalfi Coast day trip and return in one day? Well you can – by train, automobile and boat.

We were visiting Rome but wanted to see some of the other must see places in Italy , without the hassle of changing hotels. So we reviewed day trips from Rome, Italy and found a fantastic Rome to Amalfi Coast day trip with a bit of a twist! You can go by high speed train and then travel along the coast by boat to see the coastal towns of the Amalfi coast from the water.

Why a Rome to Amalfi Coast Day Trip Should be Part of Your Trip to Italy

The Amalfi Coast is one of Italy’s top destinations. With stunning sparkling, blue water, sandy beaches and quaint hillside towns it is just beautiful.

But the reality is, as one of Italy’s top destinations, the Amalfi Coast can be busy with large crowds and lots of tourists. The Amalfi Coast drive is world famous, but on our visit, the Amalfi traffic is more the reality, and we weren’t there at a peak time. (Rumor has it they are going to close the drive to tourists to relieve congestion!)

The Amalfi Coast drive passes through many, small and not so small towns, where speeds are slow. And in between the towns, driving the Amalfi Coast is slow because of the sheer volume of traffic, including lots of large buses. The road is congested as buses and cars pull over to take photos of the coastline.

Parking in and around the Amalfi Coast towns is limited. In Positano, large buses and cars are prohibited from entering – you have to park at the top and walk down. (And back up to get back to the car or bus.)

Enter the perfect solution, rather than sitting in traffic on a large bus and viewing the coastline from a window, on Walks of Rome’s Amalfi Coast by Boat tour, you can hop from town to town by boat. Avoiding the traffic, congestion, parking issues and getting some breathtaking views from the water and more time to explore the towns of Positano and Amalfi.

What makes the Amalfi Coast such a popular tourist destination? One of Europe’s most exquisite stretches of coastline, the natural beauty of the Amalfi Coast is unparalleled. Perhaps it’s the lemon-lined terraces or the magical way that the mountainscapes plunge into the sea.

While stories of its beauty just begin to paint a picture in the mind, a picture itself is worth a thousand words in these highlights from the Rome to Amalfi Coast Day Trip.

How Far is Amalfi Coast from Rome?

So where is the Amalfi Coast? And how far is it from Rome? Amalfi is 170 miles (275km) south-west of Rome, or about three and a half hours driving.

In only 1 hour 7 minutes you can travel from Rome to Naples on a high-speed train, a distance of 132 miles (212km). If you have never experienced travel on a high-speed train, then here is your chance.

With a 7:30 departure from Rome’s central train station, we arrive in Naples, make a quick transfer to a waiting shuttle bus, and were on our way before 9 am.

Mount Vesuvius is visible as you leave Naples on the start of the drive from Naples to Positano. The drive is a bit slow and congested as you near Sorrento, but you can enjoy the stunning views of the rugged cliffs and small towns built into hillsides. And the stunning blue water is an easy distraction!

The towns were originally built on the cliff tops for defensive purposes. Pirates and other invaders along the coastline were a real threat and villagers could defend their homes and villages from the clifftops.

Positano on the Amalfi Coast

As we were in a small group, our van was able to make a quick stop for photos at Sorrento. We then traveled to Positano and were dropped further down in the center of town. The large buses can’t drive into this are. With your map, complete with shopping and eating suggestions you explore on your own for 3 hours enjoying the pottery and clothing shops, and fabulous restaurants, bars and cafes where you can soak up the atmosphere and enjoy a leisurely lunch.

Known for its arts and craft, Positano has some beautiful ceramics. Resort wear is also a common item to buy here. So leave a bit of time to browse and some room in your suitcase!

Our guide, Marta, told us all the best places to eat and what dishes to try. Positano has three rather famous desserts – rum baba, sfogliatelle and delizia al limone. Of course we had to try them all! The sfogliatelle at La Zagara is not to be missed! Unbelievable! The pastry and cream just melts in your mouth!

Viewing the Amalfi Coast by Boat

From Positano we boarded a boat to travel to the town of Amalfi. The boat dock in Positano is at the bottom of the town near the beach, saving you a walk back up the hill to the bus.

From the water, the cliff-hugging mansions with the walkways down to the sparkling Amalfi coast waters are like something out of a movie set. The Amalfi Coast road is visible from the water- the engineering excellence of building between these towns is impressive, with the tunnels and curves! It’s a great perspective on a UNESCO World Heritage highlight. (And you can see the traffic you are missing.)

Limoncello and Amalfi

Upon arrival in Amalfi, it’s time for our limoncello tour. Limoncello, an Italian digestive made from the skin or rinds or lemons, and is traditionally from this area. The lemon farms are almost vertical on these rugged hilltops. So to see the farm and learn how it is made, we climb up the hillside and through the farm.

The farms have been here for hundred of years. Stairs and ladders wind through the farm. The harvest is by hand and men carry the large sacks of lemons up/down stairs in large sacks. This is the way it has always been done. The farm is too steep for machines to assist. (And having climbed through this farm, it is amazing they farm at all on these hillsides!)

Today many for these farms are struggling as labor costs rise. Limoncello on the Amalfi coast is a traditional product still made by hand. You find many shops in Amalfi and Positano selling Limoncello and other lemon products.

After the visit to the farm and a taste of Limoncello, you have some free time to explore Amalfi.

The 9th Century Roman Catholic Cathedral of St. Andrew, or the Duomo, dominates the main square in Amalfi. The Cathedral contains relics of St. Andrew, the patron saint of Amalfi. From the Cloister you enter the Basilica of the Crucifix. Dating to 596 AD this was the original church on the site until the cathedral was built.

The architecture shows Moorish influences in the Cloister of Paradise, a beautiful palm garden surrounded by 120 arched marble columns. This cloister was a cemetery for the nobles of Amalfi. There is a small admission fee to enter the cathedral.

Salerno and Returning to Rome

Then it’s back to the boat and onto Salerno. The scenery is more rugged here with less houses but still stunning. The leisurely boat ride is a nice end to the day. Upon docking in Salerno, there is time to grab a quick drink. Then you board your high-speed train back from a day well spent on the Amalfi Coast to Rome, stopping only in Naples. Departing Salerno  at 6pm, arriving at Roma Termeni at 8pm, just in time for dinner!

And, in case you hadn’t quite had enough Amalfi Coast hospitality, the wonderful Marta provided some tasty olives, just made buffalo mozzarella (it tastes even better when it is freshly made!)  and a local wine as an aperitivo on the train. A perfect end to a great day.

Day Trips from Rome to Amalfi Coast, Tours and Suggestions

So yes, the Amalfi Coast is everything it is cracked up to be. And it is totally feasible to undertake a Rome to Amalfi Coast Day trip. As evidence of that, one of our fellow travelers was a 95-year-old from the US. She, like the rest of us, had a ball!

Our Amalfi Coast day trip from Rome was with Walks of Italy . It was well organized and the guide, Marta was great. They also offer a tour which combines Pompei and driving the Amalfi Coast if you prefer. We had plenty of free time to explore Positano and Amalfi, and the limoncello farm visit was a highlight. You can book tours directly on the the Walks of Italy website.

Want some more information about traveling in Italy ? Or how about a itinerary for a day in Venice ? A one day itinerary, featuring all the iconic highlights of Venice. We also have lots of other Italian travel content, including some great Italian recipes .

We were guests of Walks of Italy, as always all our opinions are our own.

An Overview of this 3 day Amalfi Coast Itinerary

To see all the best bits of The Amalfi Coas t in 3 days, you’re going to be busy! If you want to see it at a slower pace then you may want to stretch this itinerary out over 4 to 5 days, especially if you want a beach day or two.

But if you’re short of time, this is how I suggest you structure your 3 days Amalfi Coast itinerary…

Day 1 Explore Amalfi Town, Amalfi beach and Ravello

Day 2 Day trip to the island of Capri

Day 3 Spend your last day exploring Positano

Things to know before you visit The Amalfi Coast

Firstly, where is the amalfi coast.

The Amalfi coast is on the South-west coast of Italy a 3.5 hours drive south of Rome . Naples is the closest big city and has the closest airport. It takes just over an hour to drive to The Amalfi coast from Naples.

When is the best time to visit the Amalfi Coast?

The Amalfi Coast gets busy, like seriously busy! So I would suggest avoiding visiting in the height of summer. Instead, choose the shoulder seasons in Spring and Autumn. The weather will still be warm but it’ll be cheaper, less crowded and the heat will be tolerable.

I would suggest the best months to visit are April-May and September-October.

How to get to The Amalfi Coast

Getting to The Amalfi Coast is not particularly easy. The narrow twisty roads mean that public transport is infrequent and taxis expensive.

You have a few different options for how to get to the Amalfi Coast…

  • Hire a Car. This gives you the ultimate flexibility but parking your car can be difficult and expensive in most towns along the Amalfi Coast
  • Take a bus or train to Sorrento and then get a local SITA bus to Positano or Amalfi. (Sit on the right side for the best views.)
  • Take a bus or train to Salerno then catch a ferry to Positano or Amalfi (great views of the coastline guaranteed.)
  • Take a multi-day guided tour of the Amalfi Coast. Often the pick up will be in Naples or Rome so you won’t have to worry about your own transport at all. See the section below about group tours…

How to get around the Amalfi Coast in 3 days

If you have a hire car then you will have plenty of flexibility to visit where you please when you please. It’s also great for stopping in laybys whenever you see a beautiful view you want to photograph. I’ve hired many cars in Italy and have had VERY mixed experiences. By far, my best experience has been with Europcar .

However, car parking can be expensive, sometimes as much as €5/hour. There are car parks in all the main towns along the coast and I didn’t have any problem finding spaces in late May. However, if you are visiting in July/August, you may struggle to get parked at all.

You may also need to stay on the outskirts of town in order to find a hotel with parking.

For those who decide to use public transport, the main methods are by SITA bus or ferries. Try to avoid travelling at peak times as the queues can be incredibly long. At one point, I experienced a full-out war to get a seat on the bus, everyone crushing each other. Not a pleasant experience! I didn’t take any ferries except to Capri Island but I imagine it may be a more orderly experience than the SITA buses where everyone queues in the streets.

The other option is to take organised day trips so you don’t have to worry about parking a car or joining long queues for public transport.

Where to stay for this Amalfi Coast itinerary

I decided to stay near Sorrento since the ferries are more frequent to Capri from Sorrento than any other town. This might suit anyone with longer than 3 days on the Amalfi Coast as it’s quieter and more relaxed. It’s also perfectly positioned to visit Pompeii and Mt Vesuvius if you so wish.

However, the drive to the main towns of the Amalfi coast – Positano, Ravello and Amalfi – always took much longer than I expected. In retrospect, I would recommend anyone spending just 3 days on the Amalfi Coast, to stay somewhere more central even though it might be harder to get to initially! If I did the trip again, I would base myself in Positano. If I had 4 days or more, I would split my time staying in both Positano and Sorrento.

Accommodation near Sorrento

I stayed at Hotel Torre Barbara and I can’t recommend it enough. With a car park for your hire car, bright and airy rooms, friendly staff and a beautiful verandah overlooking the ocean. It also had a brilliant restaurant on site where I had some of the best food I had throughout my whole trip to Italy. I only wished I had more time to actually enjoy my time there and perhaps read a book on that verandah or take a dip in the pool!

Accommodation in Positano

All the following hotels have car parking facilities which is a rare find in Positano!

Budget | Villa Palumbo B&B Whilst there’s no such thing as true budget accommodation in Positano (all that beauty comes with a hefty price tag) Villa Palumbo B&B is still pretty affordable. It was the most affordable hotel I could find which is still central and has a car park for your hire car.

Mid-budget | Hotel Villa Gabrisa A small step up in price gives you this lovely light and airy rooms and a verandah with a pretty view.

Luxury | Casa Nina L ocated only 900 yards from the main beach, this boutique hotel with its gorgeous rooms and pretty garden balcony, is in the perfect location.

Your 3 Day Amalfi Coast Itinerary

Day 1 in the amalfi coast: ravello & amalfi.

On Day 1, you will visit the far west section of the Amalfi Coast with stops at Ravello, Amalfi and Atrani Beach.

Start with Ravello as it can get very busy here so it’s better to visit in the early mornings. The main highlight in this pretty coastal town is Villa Rufolo and you have no doubt seen photos of this already whilst planning your Amalfi coast trip.

The ideally positioned Villa and its impeccable gardens are one of the most popular places to visit in the Amalfi Coast. The view overlooking the coast is also one of the prettiest viewpoints in this beautiful region of Italy so plan to spend at least an hour or two here soaking up the views.

After visiting Villa Rufolo, I suggest you spend some time exploring the quaint narrow streets and their many pottery shops before enjoying lunch with an incredible view at Il Glicine.

Atrani Beach

After lunch, head along the coast to Atrani Beach. You can park in the car park which serves both Amalfi and Atrani Beach since they are right next to each other.

Atrani Beach is a pretty pebbled cove which bright blue sunbeds and parasols tucked into the cliffs. There are a few shops and restaurants surrounding it but be aware many of these close in the afternoon for siestas. Have your own siesta and chill out on the beach for a couple of hours soaking up some Italian sunshine.

From Atrani Beach, head through the little tunnel and follow the road down to Amalfi Beach and Pier. This is a busy beach and a great place for people watching and seems to be full of locals catching some rays of sunshine. and playing games of beach volleyball whilst the boats ferry tourists in and out of Amalfi.

Then as the sun is going down, it’s time to explore Amalfi town, the main feature being Piazza del Duomo with its striking cathedral. I’d recommend getting dinner in Amalfi before heading back to your hotel.

Top Tip | Try Pasticceria Andrea Pansa for the best hot chocolate .

Day 2 in the Amalfi Coast: Capri

You can’t visit the Amalfi Coast without at least spending one day in Capri, the infamous island popular with the rich and famous. Capri is expensive so I wouldn’t recommend staying there if you are travelling on a budget!

Luckily it’s easy to take a day trip to Capri which you can organise from Sorrento or Positano. The ferries are more frequent from Sorrento so I’d suggest you prebook from Positano. I would also recommend booking the earliest boat out and the 2nd to last boat back. I have heard many stories of people being stood on the wrong jetty and missing the ferry that it would be a risk to choose the last ferry back.

Top Tip | Even if the later ferries are sold out, some companies will let you get back on any ferry going back to the mainland with a ticket even if you’ve missed your time slot. Check with your boat operator first!

Take a boat tour

When you first arrive in Capri, hop straight on a small boat tour of the island. You’ll get up close to the Faraglioni rock formations and get to visit several grottos including the Blue Grotto. You’ll have the opportunity to pay extra for a little rowing boat to take you inside the cave (you have to enter lying down as the entrance is so tiny) and inside you’ll witness the most incredible bright blue clear water.

You have 3 options for boat tours. The cheapest option (around €18) gives you a quick overview but won’t allow you to swim. There are some more pricey smaller boat trips where you can get inside the other smaller grottos and lagoons and have a swim. Or if you can afford it, you can even hire a private boat and dictate your own route and swimming spots.

Visit Capri Town

After your boat trip, explore the colourful marina, perhaps stopping to enjoy an Aperol Spritz. The take the cable car up to the main town of Capri. The little town has a buzzing atmosphere and you could spend plenty of time here enjoying the views and the designer shops.

After a little window shopping, head for lunch at Ristorante Il Geranio. This is not the cheapest of restaurants BUT it has wonderful food, delicious wine, excellent service and most importantly, an absolutely stunning view of the Faraglioni. If you are going to splash the cash anywhere during your 3 days on the Amalfi coast, let this be the place!

Spend your last hour or two exploring the beautiful Gardens of Augustus which look out onto Faraglioni and Via Krupp – the zigzagging path which leads to Marina Piccola. This pathway was closed when I was there but it was beautiful looking down onto it.

After your fill of stunning viewpoints, it’s time to hop on the cable car and head back to the main marina where you should enjoy some gelato whilst you await your ferry back to the mainland.

Day 3 in the Amalfi Coast: Positano

Spend a fairly relaxed last day exploring the pretty town of Positano.

Check out the iconic beach (you must have seen many photos of this beach splashed all over Instagram,) before exploring the pretty town centre and it’s many galleries, restaurants and gift shops. Now is the perfect time to pick up your Italian souvenirs.

Follow the coastal road to find some pretty viewpoints looking back onto the town where you can see the pastel-hued houses stacked on steep cliffs overlooking the pebbled beach with the bright blue parasols.

For lunch, head to Hotel Poseidon. Here you’ll find yet another Instagram-worthy photo location and the restaurant within this hotel also has a swimming pool where you could choose to spend a few hours. In the peak season, you will need to book a table in advance, especially if you want one with the best view.

After lunch, you have two options. You could head to Fornillo beach which is the beach where all the locals hang out. It’s a 10-15 minute walk along the coast to reach it from the main beach. It’s gt a much more relaxed feel to it and you can also hire kayaks here to take out for a few hours if you don’t fancy sunbathing.

Your other option would be to head out of town to Fiordo di Furore, a pretty little fjord with a beach which gets very busy in the summertime. It’s one of the most photographed locations in this region and I was disappointed that I ran out of time to visit during my own 3 days on the Amalfi Coast!

Finally, your 3 day Amalfi Coast Itinerary is over so head back to Positano and enjoy seeing the pretty beach and town lit up at night.

What to do if you have more than 3 days on the Amalfi Coast

If you are lucky enough to have more than 3 days on the Amalfi Coast then there are several things you can do with your extra time. Here are a few options.

  • Visit Praiano a less crowded but very pretty town located between Amalfi and Positano
  • Spend more time exploring the beautiful city of Sorrento
  • Take a private boat trip along the coastline of the Amalfi Coast. Spead the cost between you and your friends and take the boat out for a full day!
  • Enjoy a beach day. Choose from the many beautiful beaches including Fiordo di Furore
  • Visit the remains of Pompeii on a day trip from Naples and get a glimpse into the history of this region. Book a tour of the ancient city of Pompeii here .
  • Climb Mt Vesuvius , the active volcano which buried Pompeii in AD 79
  • Hike the Path of the Gods – a challenging hike with beautiful coastal views starting in Agerola and ends in Positano.

How to Travel From Rome to the Amalfi Coast by Train, Bus, and Car

3 day tour rome to amalfi coast

TripSavvy / Christopher Larson

The Amalfi Coast is one of Italy's most popular and stunning regions, located only 172 miles (277 kilometers) from Rome . It can be found in the region of Campania, just south of Naples and not too far from Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius . Travelers can take a train or bus straight to Salerno or drive to the town of Amalfi along the winding road through the Ferriere Valley.

The Amalfi Coast is made up of many different towns , so having a car may be useful if you plan to explore, but there's also an easy-to-use bus system that runs frequently and services many of the towns on the tourist route. There are several options to get to the Amalfi Coast from Rome if you don't want to drive yourself, such as taking the bus or train. The train ride to Amalfi from Rome is often much faster than driving.

The absolute cheapest way to get to the Amalfi Coast is to take a regional train, which is a local train that typically runs on a commuter schedule. These fares start at $19, but they are not high-speed routes. Depending on how many stops it makes, a regional train to Salerno could take between four and five hours. Bus routes offered by Marino Bus take about the same length of time, but are slightly more expensive with tickets starting at $22.

When looking for the cheapest option, make sure to check both bus and train schedules. Although the bus may cost a few bucks more than the regional train, the route might be slightly faster with fewer scheduled stops.

What Is the Fastest Way to Get From Rome to the Amalfi Coast?

For not much more than the cost of the regional train, you can take a direct high-speed train from Rome to Salerno that will get you there in about two hours, 30 minutes, although sometimes direct trains can take as long as three hours. These trains are more expensive, but you'll also have the option to upgrade to first class and on-board bar service will be available.

To get to Amalfi quickly, you'll first need to catch a Trenitalia or Italo train from Roma Termini, Rome's main train station, to Stazione Salerno, the main station in Salerno. Trains run directly between the two stations from early morning until late at night. You could also take a train to Naples and then make a connection in Salerno, which may be worth a stop for a quick lunch—especially if you've never tasted Neapolitan-style pizza before.

How Long Does It Take to Drive?

The roads in Amalfi are famously winding and narrow in places, especially the SS163, the Amalfi Coast road which connects the main coastal towns and offers iconic views along the way. This three-hour, 30-minute route may be difficult for a non-local driver to traverse easily.

However, you may want a car if you're staying in one of the Amalfi Coast's small villages. To drive from Rome, take the A24 Autostrada to the E45. When figuring out your budget, don't forget to factor in the cost of tolls, gas, and parking.

When Is the Best Time to Travel to the Amalfi Coast?

The fastest train, the Frecciabianca , leaves Rome every day between 6:00 a.m. and 9 p.m. If your schedule is flexible, you should book this train and plan for an early evening arrival in Amalfi, which will give you more time to check into your accommodation and rest a little before heading out in the evening. Alternatively, the fastest train to Salerno, via Italo, leaves Rome late at 6:30 p.m. and arrives at 8:11 p.m. Although it's the quickest way to get to Amalfi, this arrival may be too late for some travelers.

Summers in the Amalfi Coast can be extremely hot and especially crowded as visitors flock to the beaches. If you'd rather visit at a quieter time , you should plan a trip for the spring or fall, particularly in the months of May or September when the temperatures are still pretty warm and hotel rates are on the cheaper side. Although the Amalfi Coast is in the southern part of the country, winters can still get pretty cold with temperatures occasionally falling below freezing point—although snow is an extremely rare event.

What's the Most Scenic Route to the Amalfi Coast?

If you really want a car to get around the coast, you could also take the train to Sorrento , then pick up a rental car there. The drive between Sorrento and Salerno is undoubtedly one of the most stunning in Europe, but it does require nerves of steel. The narrow road zigzags along the coast for 50 miles (80 kilometers) as it precariously clings to cliffs high above the sea, with low or non-existent guardrails between you and the rocks below. The views are spectacular, but if you're driving, you'll have to be sure to keep your eye on the road instead of the scenery.

What Is There to Do in the Amalfi Coast?

To see the Amalfi Coast properly, you should try to visit all the villages and towns that make up the coastline, from Salerno to Positano , Praiano, Amalfi , and everywhere in between. In these towns, you'll find some of the best hotels and restaurants the region has to offer. You should also make time to get a nice long day at the beach or, for something different, you can go for a hike in the mountains. This is one of the best ways to get far away from the crowds, while taking in some unique views of the coastline that most tourists don't get to see. The hike down to Fiordo di Furore from Agerola is particularly picturesque, winding past ruins, churches, and finishing at a quiet inlet that even has a small beach.

The Amalfi Coast is 172 miles from Rome. The trip takes around 3 1/2 hours in a car.

The direct high-speed train from Rome to Salerno will get you there in about 2 1/2 hours.

The high-speed train can often be the fastest and most direct way to get to Amalfi from Rome, but once you're in Amalfi, having a car is a huge perk. Driving can be the best way to get there, allowing you to stop off in villages, or even in Naples to try some Neapolitan pizza.

7 of the best places to cruise in Italy

F ew countries can compete with Italy’s tourist appeal . Anyone who visits can enjoy fantastic cities, quaint villages, a string of picture-perfect coastlines, amazing cuisine and a fascinating history.

Alhough skiing , city breaks or a trip to one of the Italian lakes all have their own merits, there is a way to get a taste of several different parts of the country in one whirlwind trip.

Cruises around the Bel Paese give passengers the opportunity to see Italy ’s full range of sights. You can start with the romance of Venice and wind around to the rugged island beauty of Sicily and Sardinia, or begin surrounded by the stark coastal beauty of the Cinque Terre and end in hectic, characterful Naples , via the enchanting capital of Rome .

Whether you just want to see one destination or a handful, there’s likely a cruise to suit you; we’ve rounded up some of the best below.

Amalfi Coast

The Amalfi Coast contains a little bit of everything that has made Italy so famous: beautiful coastlines, golden sands, picturesque towns, ancient historic sites and a hearty slice of la dolce vita .

The main towns along this coast include Amalfi, Sorrento and Positano , each renowned for offering a taste of the highlife in often luxurious surroundings, whether that be laid-back beaches or grandiose hotels. Pompeii lies close to these towns, offering an incredible insight into a famous bit of world history, while driving part of the Amalfi Coast’s winding roads is the best way to get amazing views while taking in some delightful towns.

How to do it

See both Sicily and the Amalfi Coast with the ‘ Amalfi & Sicily ’ seven-night package offered by Star Clippers. It starts in Civitavecchia, taking you to Amalfi and Sorrento before moving on to Messina and circling back to Rome.

Prices from £3,629pp including seven nights’ accommodation, all meals and drinks and select entertainment. Departing 6 July 2024.

The capital is a beautiful fusion of historic and contemporary Italian life, from the modern cuisine and nightlife of Monti to the old houses and trattorias of Trastevere or Parione.

The Eternal City is also Europe’s most landmark-filled destination , with everything from Roman ruins to 18th-century fountains. The Colosseum, Roman Forum and Pantheon are the undoubtably highlights, as are the Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain. The Vatican City is also contained within Rome, and you don’t want to miss the Sistine Chapel or St Peter’s Basilica.

Most cruises to this part of the country actually dock at nearby Civitavecchia, which is roughly one hour from the capital. Rome is often a starting point for cruises too, as passengers can head north to the Cinque Terre, east to Sardinia and south to Naples and Sicily.

The  Italian Treasures  cruise offered by Atlas Ocean Voyages begins in Valletta , the historic Maltese capital, but after departing very much focuses on the eastern Italian coast. It stops for a night in both Syracuse and Giardini Naxos (on Sicily), before departing to the Amalfi Coast and Capri and then finishing in the capital, where you can explore at your leisure before flying home.

Prices from £2,946pp including eight nights’ accommodation, all meals and drinks and onshore excursions. The company is currently running a promotion where the ‘second guest sails free’, so it is possible to get the entire package for just £2,946. Departing 1 September 2024.

Venice is perhaps the most beautiful of all Italian cities, situated on a vast lagoon and criss-crossed by dozens of bridges that hang over its canals. Its waterways are lined with the colourful facades of centuries-old buildings, many of which carry a Venetian style that is unique to the city, making for an eclectic cityscape.

A gondola trip, a stroll around St Mark’s Square, a walk over the Ponte Rialto and a visit to the Doge’s Palace are customary for those seeing the city for the first time, though for many the real attraction is getting lost in the sea of mazy alleys and historic bridges .

Many cruises start and end in Venice too, though due to its location at the top of the Adriatic, it can take a while to cruise down to other popular destinations like Bari, Sicily and the Amalfi Coast. If you’re visiting on a cruise, chances are it’ll be a longer one, or that it’ll stop in destinations in northern Croatia , Dubrovnik or northern Greece .

Azmara Cruises’ ‘ Italy Intensive Voyage ’ takes passengers all the way from Rome to Venice. It begins by going north to Florence , then turning back on itself and going south to the Amalfi Coast and Sicily. After a brief stop in Kotor, Montenegro , you’ll finish in Venice, with the opportunity to explore at your leisure before flying home.

Prices from £2,060pp including 10 nights’ accommodation, all meals and drinks, evening entertainment and select onshore excursions. Departing 10 April 2024.

Sicily is another of Italy’s famous islands, sharing a part of the Mediterranean with neighbouring Sardinia. It is equally as charming as Sardinia, and filled with similarly beguiling towns, a variety of natural landscapes and some of the finest culture and history that the country has to offer.

Tradition is paramount here, something that is reflected in a proud local populace. It is also visible in towns and cities like Palermo, and the timeless beauty of Syracuse, as well as on the olive groves and vineyards that dot the slopes of Mount Etna. It makes Sicily a great place to come if you want to see modern-day Italian living with a dose of outdoor adventure, in places like the Parco dell’Etna, along with historic charm (such as that at Syracuse).

Windstar Cruises’ ‘ Sicilian Spendours ’ cruise begins and ends in the Italian capital, but as the name suggests, this trip very much focuses on the largest island in the Mediterranean. It begins by heading to the Amalfi Coast, but then moves on to three Sicilian towns – Trapani, Porto Empedocle and Catania, via Gozo and Malta .

Prices from £3,105pp including 10 nights’ accommodation, meals and onboard entertainment. Departing 28 May 2024.

Sardinia, which sits off the eastern coast around six hours from Civitavecchia by ferry, is one of Italy’s most popular summer destinations. A favourite among both tourists and Italians, it is home to a slew of great beaches – including Cala Goloritzé and the Costa Smerelda – and so is a good choice for days spent flitting between water sports and lying in the sun.

Though it’s understandable if you want to spend most of your time here on the sands, it would be remiss not to visit some of the pastel-hued towns and verdant national parks that lie inland and on the coast. Places like Alghero, Bosa and San Teodoro contain plenty of history throughout their cobbled streets, while Asinara and Gennargentu are two of the most picturesque natural areas.

Sardinia’s southerly location means that cruises that stop here often carry on to Sicily and Malta, and may go further on to the Balearics, Greek islands or even Tunisia .

The ‘ Enchanting Italian Coastlines ’ tour from Emerald Cruises covers both Sardinia and the eastern coast over a period of seven nights. It begins in the capital, moving first to Sorrento and Amalfi and then crossing the Mediterranean to Sardinia and Corsica before looping back.

Prices from £3,379pp including seven nights’ accommodation, all meals and drinks and airport transfers. Departing 27 April 2024.

Cinque Terre

The Cinque Terre competes with the Amalfi Coast for the title of Italy’s most famous coastal area, but the Italian Riviera offers a different kind of beauty in its emerald waters and pastel-coloured towns. The region is part of Liguria, and consists of five villages: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore.

Each one has an abundance of old Italian charm, from the faded colours that come alive at sunset to the mazes of alleys leading up from tiny harbours. Only Monterosso has a proper beach, but this village quintet isn’t the place for solely a beach holiday, despite the coastlines. Instead, wander aimlessly through the villages, enjoy a laid-back meal or take to any of the surrounding hiking paths.

These once isolated villages are now tourist hotspots in their own right, with the Cinque Terre Express one of the best ways to get between them. Most cruises dock at La Spezia, the province’s main city, which lies just 20 minutes from the nearest Cinque Terre village, Riomaggiore.

The Cinque Terre is a less frequented destination on longer cruises, so the best bet is to visit as part of a multi-country cruise. Celebrity Cruises offers one such option with their ‘ Italian Riviera & France ’ package, which departs from Rome and initially heads south to Naples before circling around to La Spezia and Santa Margherita. After some time spent enjoying the Italian Riviera, you move on to the French one, seeing Cannes and Marseille before finishing in Barcelona.

Prices from £1,209pp including nine nights’ accommodation, return flights, all meals, daily activities and entertainment. Departing 4 June 2024.

Naples is a fascinating city, buoyed by a vibrant and chaotic energy and blessed with beautiful surroundings – including Mount Vesuvius and an azure bay – and an eclectic blend of architecture.

The city itself has a wealth of culture and history, from the recent and immaterial – such as its devotion to pizza or its football club – to the ancient and pertinent, including the Duomo cathedral and a large collection of Greco-Roman artefacts at the National Archaeological Museum. Be sure to talk a walk around the Spanish Quarter, Centro Storico and Spaccanapoli (the city’s main thoroughfare) to get a real sense of how life is lived in this hectic city.

Naples is the closest major city to the Amalfi Coast, and as such many trips here are combined with a visit to towns like Sorrento or Positano.

You’re spoilt for choice when including Naples in a cruise itinerary, and many cruises that stop here also include visits to parts of Greece and Croatia. A seven-day Mediterranean cruise from Norwegian Cruise Line takes advantage of these stops, taking guests from Rome to Venice via Valletta, Split and Corfu. Nevertheless, the focus is still on Italy, taking in the historic capital, the romantic canals of Venice and all of Naples’ characterful chaos (with an added stop in Messina, Sicily).

Prices from £1,573pp including seven nights’ accommodation, all meals and drinks and onboard entertainment. Departing 14 August 2024.
