"The Nova Scotia experience was fantastic. The scenery was something that needs to be experienced first hand and just enjoyed. Having the tour guides to help us along and assist us in understanding and interpreting what we were seeing was probably the most important aspect of taking a guided tour over driving ourselves. On our own, we would not have had half of the experiences we did on this tour - we would never have known what to look for. This was our first guided tour. We were relatively unsure of a group outing after always being on our own. As a result of the experience, we are planning our next tour - with Caravan." Mr. & Mrs. A.D., Cherry Hill, New Jersey
"I have traveled extensively with several different tour companies and am very pleased with my experience with Caravan. They deliver what they promise and provide a pleasant and hassle-free vacation." Ms. A.R., Ventura, California
"A++. We can’t say enough about every aspect of this spectacular 1,300 mile journey. Our tour director and driver were so caring and knowledgeable and they made this journey one that will be remembered and cherished always. We had adequate time to take photos and videos, and the accommodations were 5 star. Every aspect of this trip far exceeded our expectations. We will definitely take another Caravan Tour!" Mr. & Mrs. R.H., Nashua, New Hampshire
"This was one of the best tours we’ve been on. Saw many things the average traveler wouldn’t. The director and driver worked well together as a team. Our director was an unbelievably kind and informative person. She went above and beyond for all of us." Mr. & Mrs. K.S., Bassano, Alberta
"Our director enthusiastically greeted and welcomed all us travelers from all parts of the USA. I noted her spontaneous laugh and good humor as we set out on our days ahead in the Maritime Provinces. She told us all about the Bay of Fundy and Bore tide. We walked on the ocean floor among very interesting rock formations. What a miracle of nature. We crossed Prince Edward Island on the Confederation Bridge, and learning how hard and difficult it was to construct made all the difference in appreciating it. All the incredible places and people we met along the way on Cape Breton, balmy weather and seeing a an eagle swoop down in the bay for chicken was such a forever memory. At Cheticamp the latch hook rugs were works of art and such fun to recall Stella Camus creating them from ages 16 to 91! The Cabot Trail is so incredibly beautiful. Halifax’s Maritime museum will be forever remembered. Again, our director did everything possible to make our tour the best, always gave us suggestions and time lines to various outings. She took worry and concerns away as we felt safe and taken care of in her charge. I look forward to traveling again with Caravan and feel sure you have the best travel plans ahead for us." Ms. C.S., West Linn, Oregon
"We had wanted to take this trip for awhile. It was everything we had hoped for and more. We saw things we had never seen. The ride on the bus provided beautiful, breathtaking scenery. Fantastic tour director, wonderful driver, great group of people, food was great and scenery unbelievable. Caravan does a great tour! It was our first but will not be our last." Mrs. C.H., Flushing, Michigan
"Caravan did a marvelous job providing an introduction to the Canadian Maritimes. I very much liked the sightseeing and activities. I especially enjoyed the sailing trip near Alexander Graham Bell’s house, the bald eagles with their brilliant antics. I also liked the visit to Louisbourg: what a wonderful restoration. There was much to learn about the environment, spirituality, and human intersectionality. How all these elements coalesced is an astonishment to me. What a superb tour! Ours was truly a brilliant director, the Maritimes meant the world to him and by extension, to us. He is a true national treasure." Mr. K.M., Ithaca, New York

caravan tours 2023 nova scotia

A Google search of "caravan tours nova scotia reviews:" turned up some results in case nobody can report on personal experience. Sometimes those tours can be quite rushed so you might post the itinerary or a link to the tour you're considering.

Just checked it out and this tour has you running the roads all over the place with a great deal of backtracking...

https://www.caravan.com/tour/canada-nova-scotia

Here is a recent report:

https://www.tripadvisor.ca/ShowTopic-g154976-i327-k14059752-Trip_Report_Maritime_Provinces-Halifax_Halifax_Regional_Municipality_Nova_Scotia.html

There is a search feature on the TA forums and I found these links by doing a search:

https://www.tripadvisor.ca/ShowTopic-g154967-i326-k11763131-Caravan_Tours-Nova_Scotia.html

Using Google I found these. Do google for reviews for each company and post their itineraries here for our comments:

This one (above) is rushed but decently planned and goes to some worthwhile places.

You can tell by the pricing for this one above what the best time is to see the fall colours!

Hi Martijewel, thanks for your reply.

Below is the website to the Caravan Tours' guided trip I am referring to. The itinerary looks interesting. Any further advice would be appreciated.

Hi Vini, thanks for your reply.

I have read the itinerary in details and didn't find any backtracking. Where are the backtracking?

Any good suggestions?

Hi Maryann, thank you very much for your information which I have took some time to read and digest. They are very useful information for my trip planning to Canada in September.

I have PM some TAors who went with Caravan Tours and hopefully they could provide further inputs.

This has you spending more time on the bus than touring. However you will get a tiny glimpse of what makes this area so special.

We took a Caravan tour in Nova Scotia- August, 2023. We felt there was way too much time spent on the bus. We were only allowed 1-2 hrs at each stop, including Peggy's Cove. We felt that 80% of the time was spent riding, and 20% was spent actually seeing things. Not a great trip. The guide was a bit condescending. After the first day, I felt perhaps we weren't senile enough to be on the tour. He talked as though we were elementary school students who didn't know when to get on the bus. I have to say he is very knowledgeable about Nova Scotia, and you WILL be listening to him for hours as he attempts to make the very long, boring drives interesting. Halifax is beautiful, as was the waterfront hotel we stayed in. That may have been my favorite part of the trip, besides Peggy's Cove. Although we had not nearly enough time to explore the cove. It was our lunch stop, so we had to eat, which left about an hour to see Peggy's Cove. Alma was just a little shopping, rushed at that...all in all, I wouldn't take the trip with Caravan again, simply because I don't feel like we really SAW Nova Scotia. We were rushed to hurry up and ride the bus, only to stop here and there for an hour, then do it again. We went past places the guide would point out, then say, but we aren't stopping there. Some people may like this sort of tour, the bus was immaculate, the driver was great. I just feel for the expensive price point, we didn't see many interesting places because they backtrack. I do not feel it was worth the money. Many of the other passengers felt the same. They had been with Caravan on other tours, and three mentioned the Costa Rica trips with Caravan are fantasic, but the Nova Scotia trip is a bust.

Escorted coach tours tend to be like that... they try to include as many of the famous attractions as they can, so that guests can tick them off their list and say they've seen them, so I am not surprised by your comments, Sher. (Welcome to the TA forums, by the way!) The only way to accomplish that is to keep a tight schedule. In my area, which attracts millions of visitors per year, I've seen the coach tours herding guests on and off the bus at attractions, and when I've looked up itineraries online, I see they usually have very early starts each day, and many hours of driving.

They suit those who don't want to make their own travel arrangements ... it's much simpler to take a coach tour where everything is already all planned out. My sister-in-law who is in her mid-70s has been on a few and loves them; she has some slight mobility issues, and being widowed, would not travel otherwise. She enjoys the camaraderie of the group and made friends on one tour, and they have met up again on subsequent tours they've booked together.

Sher S, thank you so much for this review/report. This will be of great help to others looking for bus tours.

Western & Eastern Canada Vacation Packages

If you search for eastern Canada vacation packages some of the more popular destinations that come up might include Toronto, Montreal, and Niagara Falls.

If you search for western Canada vacation packages, popular destinations might include Victoria, Whistler, and Vancouver.

Canada has so much more to offer, however.

About Canada

Canada is the world’s second-biggest country covering some 9.9 million square kilometers (6.15 million square miles). As the bird flies, from Victoria, BC (Canada’s most westerly city) to St. John’s, Newfoundland (Canada’s most easterly city) the distance is approximately 7314 km (4,545 miles).

Bordered by 3 oceans, Canada also has more than 240,000 kilometers (nearly 150,000 miles) of coastline.

Caravan Tours  offers a few overlooked vacation packages in Canada that are well worth your consideration including:

  • Canadian Rockies Tour
  • Nova Scotia Tour (includes stops in PEI & New Brunswick)

Canadian Rockies Vacation Package

Most North Americans just think of British Columbia Canada when they think of the Canadian Rockies.

In truth, Canada’s Rocky Mountains are shared by two western provinces including British Columbia and Alberta. In fact, Caravan’s western Canada tour , which begins in Calgary Alberta, includes these amazing destinations, all of which are found in Alberta, including:

  • WATERTON LAKES NATIONAL PARK   (part of the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park)
  • BANFF NATIONAL PARK
  • LAKE LOUISE (a glacier-fed alpine lake and ski resort)
  • JASPER NATIONAL PARK (includes a gondola ride to the top of Sulphur Mountain)
  • THE COLUMBIA ICEFIELD   (includes a ride across Athabasca Glacier, the largest glacier in the Canadian Rockies)

Banff National Park and Jasper National Park are also popular locations for enjoying natural hot springs and gondola rides to the top of nearby mountain peaks. You can expect to see plenty of Canadian wildlife as well, including, moose, caribou, black bears, grizzlies, and mountain goats.

Other destinations on Caravan’s western Canada vacation include Maligne Lake and Moraine Lake, plus a Bow River float trip.

See what others have said about the Canadian Rockies tour on the Western Canada Tours Reviews  page.

Nova Scotia Vacation Package

Caravan’s east coast Canada vacation package takes you on a tour to three of Canada’s maritime provinces including:

  • NOVA SCOTIA (including Cape Breton Island and Cabot Trail)
  • PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND (PEI trip includes Anne of Green Gables House in Cavendish)
  • NEW BRUNSWICK (see the world’s highest tides in the Bay of Fundy)

Along with visits to the Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site and Cabot Trail , the tour also includes a trip across the 8-mile Confederation Bridge that spans across the Atlantic Ocean between Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick. Other eastern Canada cities worth exploring on the tour include Halifax Nova Scotia , Charlottetown PEI, and St John in New Brunswick.

See what others have said about the Nova Scotia tour on the East Coast Canada Tour Reviews  page.

About the Maritime Provinces

New brunswick.

New Brunswick, one of Canada’s first four original provinces (1867), is in the Appalachian Mountains just east of the state of Maine, USA. The most notable tourist attraction in New Brunswick in the Bay of Fundy and the Fundy Tides (the world’s highest tides), which can raise an incredible 52 feet (16 meters) daily.

NOVA SCOTIA

Although Nova Scotia is Canada’s second-smallest province it was also one of Canada’s first original four provinces (along with New Brunswick, Ontario, and Quebec). In all, the province of Nova Scotia has over 2500 miles (4051 km) of coastline, which includes scenic Cape Breton Island.

The most notable attractions in Nova Scotia include the capital city of Halifax, Cabot Trail (the scenic highway through the Cape Breton Highlands) plus the Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site and the Fortress of Louisbourg.

PRINCE EDWARD ISALND

To the east of New Brunswick is Prince Edward Island (aka “PEI” or “Garden of the Gulf”). PEI is Canada’s smallest province and situated in the Gulf of St. Lawrence.

The capital of PEI is Charlottetown, which is also known as the “ Birthplace of Confederation ” even though PEI didn’t officially join Canada until 1873, six years after confederation.

Prince Edward Island’s most notable attraction is the Green Gables farmhouse located in Cavendish. Anne of Green Gables is Canada’s biggest selling novel.

Another notable attraction of PEI is the 8-mile-long Confederation Bridge, Canada’s longest bridge that connects PEI to New Brunswick.

Nova Scotia travel FAQs

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travellers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travellers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

How do I get to Nova Scotia?

There are plenty of ways to get to Nova Scotia including driving along the Trans-Canadian Highway and connecting with the Nova Scotia Highway 104, flying into Halifax Stanfield National Airport from various destinations within Canada, and catching public transport including ferry, bus, and train services.

How do I get around Nova Scotia?

Getting around Nova Scotia is super easy if you're travelling with a car or able to rent one from the airport once you've landed.

Without a car, getting to and from different places in Nova Scotia becomes more difficult with no clear public transportation system that will take you to the popular/tourist locations.

There are bus and shuttle companies that operate day tours from places such as Halifax to Lunenburg, as well as public transport systems within the larger cities themselves that are reliable and efficient.

What's the weather like in Nova Scotia?

Nova Scotia's weather features four distinct seasons throughout the year: warm to hot summers and cold, snowy winters.

The shoulder seasons of autumn and spring also experience typical weather patterns such as mild to warm temperatures and frequent rainfall.

When is the best time to visit Nova Scotia?

Nova Scotia has something to offer in every season but the most popular time to travel to this maritime province is in summer when events and festivals are frequent and the weather's warm enough to lay out on its beaches.

The shoulder seasons of autumn and spring are also a great time to visit the region with fewer crowds, more availability, and lower accommodation prices than in the height of summer.

Some of the best things to do during these seasons are hiking and surfing.

What do I pack for a trip to Nova Scotia?

What to pack for a trip to Nova Scotia is largely like packing for any other destination but it does depend on what time of the year you're travelling in.

Temperatures rarely get that high in summer so packing dresses, t-shirts, and shorts will do the trick.

If you're travelling in winter make sure you rug up with waterproof jackets, coats, lots of layers, and thick socks.

Regardless of the season you're travelling in, you should always pack sunscreen, a reusable drink bottle, a backpack or day bag, and a camera.

Are Intrepid trips accessible for travellers with disabilities?

We are committed to making travel widely  accessible , regardless of ability or disability. We do our best to help you see the world, regardless of physical or mental limitations.

We are always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Luc was the best tour guide ever. He kept our group on time and informed. Every stop was interesting, and the hotels and lodges were very good.
It was an excellent trip!
The wonders of the Bay of Fundy tour was the best tour I’ve ever been on. We were a small group who enjoyed each other’s company and shared many varied and interesting experiences. As a solo traveler I was welcomed by everyone in the group and never felt on my own. Our tour director, Eunice, was welcoming, knowledgeable and went the extra mile to ensure we really experienced the local culture and delicacies. Our coach driver, Hank, who was also welcoming and knowledgeable, had a quietly confident manner which made you feel extremely safe when on the road. He also went the extra mile to ensure we got the most out of every experience. I would highly recommend this tour.

Nova Scotians will soon be able to register federally approved three-wheel vehicles

Vehicle owner says pilot project is overdue, but he has questions.

There could be more three-wheel vehicles on Nova Scotia roads following the announcement of a pilot project to permit registration of federally approved models, but one owner says he has questions.

On Wednesday, Nova Scotia Public Works announced vehicles with three wheels, automotive seats, foot pedals and steering wheels can be registered in the province starting May 15.

The five-year pilot project will bring Nova Scotia in line with other provinces, according to a news release.

"They're not really a motorcycle, they're not really a car," said Kevin Mitchell, the registrar of motor vehicles for the province.

Mitchell said three-wheel vehicles will be registered as a car, and drivers will require a Class 5 licence. Helmets will be mandatory for all occupants, passengers must be over age 9 and the vehicles are not allowed to tow trailers.

"They've been permitted for sale in Canada for a while," he said. "So this is just us getting caught up with the rest of Canada."

Mitchell said the manufacturers compliance label for qualifying vehicles should read TWV or three-wheel vehicle. He said the Polaris Slingshot and Campagna T-Rex are examples of models that qualify under the pilot project, but three-wheel ATVs and tuk-tuks, or motorized rickshaws, do not.

Robert Gerrior purchased a Slingshot in June 2023. Last summer, the New Glasgow resident registered and insured the vehicle through a relative's address in New Brunswick.

"I know next week I can register it, but I don't know if I can drive it on the road next week," said Gerrior. "I don't know that I can find a spot yet that'll inspect it. Also, I've spoken to my insurance company and they can't give me word on whether they can insure it or not."

Gerrior said the pilot project for vehicles is overdue. He said another Slingshot was registered with a Nova Scotia plate before the pilot project.

He said he sent a picture to the government asking why he couldn't register his vehicle when somebody else had already been successful.

Two photo show the front and rear of a Polaris slingshot. The left photo shows the front which has two wheels. The right shows the rear which only has one wheel.

Mitchell was told a three-wheel vehicle was registered by mistake and the registration was eventually revoked.

'Hard to miss a pothole'

Gerrior said the vehicle gets a lot of attention. But he said it has its quirks.

"It's quite fun to drive and every time you stop for gas you spend 20 minutes … talking to people," Gerrior said. "That third wheel in the back is in the centre, so it's hard to miss a pothole."
