There are a number of different companies and organizations that facilitate dental continuing education courses onboard cruise ships. Here’s a comprehensive listing of these dental CE providers, along with their upcoming events:

Smiles at Sea Cruises

We’ve heard from multiple attendees that Smiles at Sea dental CE cruises rank at the top for fun. These high energy cruise programs offer varied courses and presenters and are great for the whole dental team. While Smiles at Sea offers a number of events throughout the year, here’s one that’s coming up in Spring of 2023 that looks pretty awesome:

Smiles at Sea 2023 Event

Professional Education Society

Professional Education Society puts on solid, high-quality CE programs primarily aimed at dentists and other medical professionals. Their offered dental CE cruises are often bucket-list-type trips – think Seychelles, Egypt, the Mediterranean, etc. In the fall of 2023, PES will host a 12 day continuing education cruise hitting up many of the hot spots in southern Europe, along with some lesser-known but equally impressive stops. For the full listing of Professional Education Society continuing education cruises for dentists, follow this link .

Splendors of Southern Europe Cruise

University at Sea / Continuing Education, Inc

University at Sea / Continuing Education, Inc has been a longtime player in the dental CE cruise space. The company offers continuing education trips (both land and sea) for physicians, nurses, pharmacists, chiropractors and, of course, dentists. They almost always offer Alaska dental CE cruises and Caribbean dental CE cruises, so it’s a great company to check out if those destinations are on your list! Here’s an Alaskan continuing education cruise happening in the summer of 2023, but for a full list of this company’s offering follow this link .

Why Choose a Dental CE Cruise?

  • Dental CE , Dental Cruise
  • January 22, 2019

By Dana Myers, RDH

These days we’re so lucky to have ready access to so many different CE options. With a whisk of our fingertips at the keyboard, we can quickly conjure up webinars on any topic that strikes our fancy. We can easily locate a variety of professional organizations conferencing near our hometowns. Most importantly, we can also have our minds blown to find a new and different option, a continuing education vacation aboard a  Smiles At Sea  dental CE cruise. With so much to choose from, this unabashedly-biased blogger is here to tell you the top reasons why you should CHOOSE THE CRUISE!

The Networking!

dental continuing education cruises

The networking aboard a Smiles At Sea cruise is so amaz-a-zing, it deserves that extra syllable! Unlike traditional conferences, where once the classes are over everyone disperses into the host cities not to be seen again until the next day, on the cruise ship you get to actually spend time, in person, building relationships with your team, other attendees, speakers, and exhibitors. Whether you’re eating meals, relaxing by the pool, climbing the rock wall on the top of the ship, going out dancing, or even heading off the ship for an excursion you’re meeting and forming friendships with like-minded professionals leading the dental industry!

dental continuing education cruises

Attending the Whitening Ball!

dental continuing education cruises

The Whitening Ball is the ultimate must-attend celebration on any Smiles At Sea cruise. Hundreds of dental professionals and their guests decked out in all-white outfits, gloriously highlighted in fluorescent glowsticks, descend on the dance floor to the siren sound of the DJ. Attendees, speakers, exhibitors, guests, and crew all get silly together and have a blast, sipping complimentary cocktails and busting moves. Oh yeah, there’s totally a dance contest!

dental continuing education cruises

It’s a vacation!

dental continuing education cruises

It’s a dental continuing education VACATION! Dude, it’s a CRUISE! That means that while you’re on the ship there’s lots of food, swimming, sunbathing, hot-tubbing, gambling, and live entertainment. Plus, the class schedule is designed to allow you to fully enjoy the real beauty of cruising – getting off the ship to enjoy the ports of call! Take a break from learning and immerse yourself in an unforgettable excursion (like this one when the Smiles At Sea crew did Havana)!

dental continuing education cruises

The CE credits!

Smiles At Sea is a nationally approved PACE program provider for FAGD/MAGD credit. The high quality dental continuing education courses cover a variety of hot topics and are presented by industry thought leaders. Earning dental continuing education credits while sailing the high seas to exotic vacation destinations is just plain awesome! How often do you get to watch Havana appear outside your classroom?

dental continuing education cruises

The fun atmosphere!

This isn’t your standard dental CE experience! The Smiles At Sea Captain, Elijah Desmond, and his entire crew work hard to create and foster the most fun and positive environment for your dental CE vacation! Lil’ Ray, our perky mascot, will brighten your day grooving to a perpetual soundtrack of upbeat music with mobile speakers. As with any conference, it can get a little chilly in the classroom, so feel free to show up in your onesies! Another great way to get the blood moving is an SRP appointment during class (Shoulder Rub People)!

dental continuing education cruises

You can customize!

Say you’ve been dying to go on a Smiles At Sea cruise, but every time the upcoming events are released the dates don’t work with your packed schedule (cue the fist in the air, cursing the heavens, “Why is it legal for my favorite conferences to book on the same weekend!?!?”). Maybe you’re hoping for a specific destination for your team’s ideal dental vacation (mmm, Hawaii…). Better still, maybe you’ve been looking for the perfect team-building trip, “Man, it’d be awesome to do a Smiles At Sea dental CE cruise JUST FOR MY WHOLE TEAM!” We’ve got you covered with Team Retreats! Customize the location, dates, trip length, and speaker, and we take care of all the details! Perhaps you’ve been wondering how to get your own organization or association event on a cruise ship. We can manage that event, arranging all the details, making it Powered By Smiles At Sea!

dental continuing education cruises

Dana Myers is a dental hygienist who serves on the  Smiles At Sea  crew as Exhibitor Concierge,  Ship’s Log  contributor, and purple-haired fun-enhancer. Don’t miss our upcoming cruises!

Foundations can typically be completed in 3 hours or less if taken in one session. The training is designed to save learners' progress across multiple sessions, so learners can take the course at their own pace.

Foundations is a free resource. The course is available through CDC TRAIN , an affiliate of the Public Health Foundation's TRAIN Learning Network. This learning network provides access to more than 1,000 courses developed by the CDC programs, grantees, and other funded partners.

Signing into CDC's Training Group

If you have a TRAIN account from another affiliate, like a state health department, you may need to add the CDC group to your profile for the training to appear. To do so, select your name at the top right, then “Your Profile,” and then the Manage Groups tab. Select the “Join Another Group” button, and search for CDC.

Continuing education units

This continuing education activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the standards of the American Dental Association (ADA) Continuing Education Recognition Program (CERP) through joint efforts between Organization for Safety, Asepsis, and Prevention (OSAP) and CDC's Division of Oral Health.

OSAP is a recognized CE provider through ADA CERP. ADA CERP is a service of the ADA to assist dental professionals in identifying quality providers of continuing dental education. ADA CERP does not approve or endorse individual courses or instructors, nor does it imply acceptance of credit hours by boards of dentistry. OSAP has designated this activity for 3 CE credits.

Learners who complete the Foundations training will receive a certificate of completion through CDC TRAIN. Specific instructions for obtaining CE credit are located on the Foundations course completion certificate. Learners do not need to be a member of OSAP to receive CE credit but may need to register on that organization's website.

Who is OSAP?

OSAP, a dental membership association, is a community of clinicians, educators, researchers, and industry representatives who advocate for safe and infection-free delivery of oral health care. Founded in 1984, OSAP is dedicated to education, research, service, and policy development to promote safety and the control of infectious diseases in dental healthcare settings worldwide.

OSAP offers extensive online resources, publications, FAQs, checklists, and toolkits that help dental professionals deliver the safest dental visit possible for their patients. OSAP also provides online and live courses to help advance the level of knowledge and skill of dental health care personnel.

There are many choices on the Palouse for your dental needs, but there isn’t many dentists that will care for you like Dr. Hansen and his staff. Dr. Hansen goes above and beyond with his sincere and excellent care. To be honest, I don’t love the dentist- but Dr. Hansen and his staff make it the best it can be. Another thing- many area dentists look for a reason to do thousands of dollars of work in your mouth- upon intake Dr. Hansen takes the time to get to know you and what level of dental care you are comfortable with- if you want every single thing fixed…you got it. If you’re like me and don’t want to fix it until it needs fixing…you got it! Thank you Dr. Hansen and staff!

Truly the best experience I have had at a dentist! Dr Hansen spent so much time with me talking and educating me on what was going on. 10/10 recommend!

I hate dentists I always sit in my car thinking about if I even want to go because of the anxiety I get from dental work. My first time going into Dr clay Hansen’s office I was shaking when opening the front door but once I got in and talked to the staff I felt like I was at my grandpa’s old practice and my anxiety diminished little by little. By the time my appointment was done it made my view on the dentist change. Now I can go in there with little to no anxiety knowing that I’m taken care of. Thank you.

Best experience at a dentistry office I’ve ever had. Cleaning was fast and efficient and the staff were courteous, friendly, and informative. Highly recommend.

I love going here, they really take care of you and make sure you are comfortable. I absolutely love going to the dentist now! My son (age 9 now) has been going here since he was 5, he’s never been afraid or worried about having them look and clean his teeth. With their new renovations every room has their own water line and suction; and the new chairs are so comfortable I almost fell asleep last time while they were cleaning. The staff is so nice and welcoming, I have always felt taken care of here.

Thank you for fitting me in for a tooth repair. I am one of your patients who probably has a big TLC on her file, and your gentleness and kindness is much appreciated – not just with Dr. Hansen, but with his entire staff.

I appreciate that the secretary got me in at 2:20pm. I arrived on time, but I forgot to bring my night guard with me! So the dental assistant let me go back home and retrieve it since I live close by. She was still nice when I came back quickly. She used the grinding tool 4 times at my request to smooth out the surface of the night guard, and she answered my questions also. I really appreciate the care I received. Thank you!

Dr. Hansen went far above and beyond my expectations. He agreed to see me on an emergency basis when his office was closed for vacation to do an extraction for an incredibly painful toothache. The work done was first rate. When the pain returned after the deadening wore off, he had me come to the office int he evening to give me another dose. He followed up with me by text and phone to make sure I was okay the next day. He was kind and considerate throughout.

Once again, Dr Hansen accommodated a dental emergency for me and saved the day. Im not good at reviews, but I had to do something this time. Ive been seeing Clay Hansen for several years now and Ive come to feel very grateful for the way that he and his staff run their practice. Thanks to all of you at Palouse View Dental in Moscow Id.

The front staff is courteous and helpful. My dental hygienist was thorough, gentle, and friendly. I would highly recommend Palouse view dental for all your dental needs

Based on research I did online, I selected Dr Hansen to see for a dental checkup. It was the right decision. From my first encounter with Marnie at the front desk to my dental exam by Dr Hansen, the staff was kind, knowledgeable and professional. Keisha (sp?) did a great job cleaning my teeth, explaining everything as she went. Dr Hansen was a personable, thoughtful gentleman who listened to my concerns and came up with a plan to address those. I highly recommend Dr Hansen for dental needs!

The nurse I had was really cool, or Dentist assistant and I was taken care of pretty well. Hard to get to since I’m not from Moscow but I appreciate the membership club 🙂

Woman: I’ve always been conscious of my teeth…my front teeth, and I’ve people who commented on them at different places. Like, if you’re in a restaurant that has different kind of lighting, they would kind of fluoresce. And so when we decided to do the implants and when we decided to do the veneers, I really wanted something that looked natural, and that for my job, I have to spend time out in eating situations with people. It’s so important that they look natural wherever I’m at, whatever kind of lighting, and that’s what I feel this does. It feels very natural. I think that they look appropriate, and I think people notice my smile, they don’t notice my teeth. Man 1: I have had work done from other dentists that they’ve been able to go in and take a look at and be able to make sure that it’s up to their standards. When I was away for an extended period of time, you know, I had a filling done by another dentist, and there was always just, like, one spot that was, like, really rough. And being able to come in and say, hey, you know, someone else did this. I know it’s not, like, your responsibility or anything, but can you look at that? Can you help me with that? And they were able to go in and, like, help, like, refine it a little bit and make it nice and smooth. Man 2: I think the quality of care here is top-notch. I’m thinking about friends that I have that are also people that I’ve referred here and people who…and the person who referred me here. I think when I have somebody in my life that comes here and totally separate from this office, comes back and comments about how happy they are. I have nothing to do with how this office operates, but I made that referral now years ago, and still, it’s a part of our exchange outside of this office that we both have this thing in common. And it’s because they care here. Man 3: I think Dr. Hansen’s great. He’s genuinely concerned about my teeth and me, and I think he does excellent work. I had the top of…all my top teeth capped, and it’s a pretty sensitive, critical procedure, and I think he did a great job. I ended up capping them all because they match each other better when they’re all done at one time. I’m smiling more. I like to smile more, and people smile back, and it’s a good feeling.

It’s easier to answer this question when you come in for a consultation. No two patients are alike! Luckily, you’ll discover implant options for patients missing one tooth or all of their teeth. For implants, you’ll need a strong enough jaw to support them. However, you can get procedures to restore your jaw, if needed. Schedule a consultation today find out if you are a good candidate for implants.

After your procedure, we’ll give you aftercare instructions that protect your implants. You’ll want to follow our instructions in order to encourage healing. Once your mouth has fully healed, you’ll need to maintain good oral care habits, just like you would for regular teeth. That means brushing twice a day and flossing at least once. You’ll also want to visit us regularly for checkups, so we can monitor the condition of your implants.

Absolutely! We invite you to schedule appointments for your loved ones. Although we specialize in dental implants, we welcome patients in all stages of life. We offer general dental care, cosmetic services, restorative care, and more for your family’s needs. If any damage happens to their smile, you have an expert team on hand that can help!

Best of Moscow by high speed train

Cool Cruiser

Sure would appreciate someone who has taken "Best of Moscow by high speed train" from St. Petersburg could please share their impressions of this shore excursion. From the description this sounds like a very long day.

Wondering how the 4 hour train trip was in terms of accommodations, etc. Also what time did you leave the ship and what time at night did you return? Were both legs of the trip on the high speed rail (I read that slower trains also travel the same tracks)?

My wife and I are considering this excursion. We thought that if we are making all the effort to go to Russia then how could we pass up going to Moscow, walking in Red Square, seeing St. Basil, etc.

If you are considering this on the 2015 June Baltic cruise on Voyager; my suggestion is don't. There is so much to do in St. Petersburg and although a train is one of my favorite ways to travel the time would be far better spent in St. P.

Thanks for the advice. Yes, this would be on the Voyager during the 2015 season but not yet sure exactly which cruise.

We did the Moscow excursion "on a different luxury line", but from your brief description it sounds very much like the same trip, so I will operate on that assumption. It is a VERY long day! We left the ship at 5:30 AM and returned at 12:30 AM. The highspeed train trip is comfortable, and while they call it "Business Class" it does not compare well to the equivalent class on say Rail Europe. When we did it in 2011, we did have highspeed both ways, and the trip back seemed much longer as the adrenaline and excitement had worn off!:D

Moscow itself is not that terribly different from any other big city in the world, but this Cold War kid never thought he would ever stand in Red Square, never mind walk the grounds of The Kremlin, or tour The Kremlin Palace, or see (but not visit) Lenin's Tomb, or visit The Armoury. But he did, and he loved every minute of it! Yes, it is a long day, and you barely scratch a scratch on the surface, but it is worth it. There is a tremendous amount to see in St. Petersburg, but every Baltic cruise goes to St. Petersburg, so you can go back if you choose to. Not every cruiseline offers you the chance to see Moscow.

I have not personally done this tour, but our last time in St Petersburg, the private guide that we hired for a day was leading the regent tour to Moscow on the high speed train the next day. He said it was way better than the previous alternative, which was flying to Moscow and back. He said that you actually got to Moscow faster because you didn't have to deal with airline checkin etc. it did seem like a very long day to me, and there is so much to see and do in st. Petersburg that I didn't consider doing it.

We toured to Moscow from St. Petersburg via the hi-speed SAPSAN train last September, from a Baltic cruise on the Oceania Marina. You need to have a two-night, three day port call in St. Petersburg to take this tour because the tour typically leaves the ship around 5:00 - 5:30 AM and doesn't return until after midnight the next day. We didn't take the ship's tour; we made private arrangements with TravelAllRussia for three days of touring, the first and third days in St. Petersburg and the second day the tour to Moscow by train. Our cost for the private tour for three days was about the same as what the ship charged for the excursion to Moscow alone. There are a number of private tour agencies that operate in St. Petersburg and offer the Moscow train tours; we would strongly recommend them over the ship's tours.

All three days had private guides with car and driver. The second day, the driver picked us up at the ship and took us to the train, but we were alone on the train, and met in Moscow by the guide on the station platform. After our tour and dinner, we were brought back to the train and after the return train trip met by the driver and taken back to the ship. Because you are alone on the train you must have your own Russian visas.

If this is your first visit to St. Petersburg, I would agree there is much more to see there. We found Moscow somewhat a disappointment, particularly Red Square. The Kremlin and the cathedral in Red Square were also worth seeing. But the best thing we saw was the Moscow subway! I worked for the Washington Metro system back in the 1980s as it grew from 40 to 80 miles and although I was in the computer area, I learned a lot about the challenges of running a subway system. We used the Moscow system to get across the city from where we had dinner to the train station, and I was amazed at the cleanliness', speed of operation, the short headways maintained, and the courtesy of everyone involved. A very impressive experience!

We had been to St. Petersburg before, and so had the time to take a day and go to Moscow. Also, I really like trains, and the SAPSAN is a German train set running on Russian rails. Seats are like first class domestic air, spacious but not too plush or comfortable, but with enough room. Not too much recline, and almost 8 hours on the train in two shots is a lot for an old man. They come through and sell drinks, candy, etc. but the sellers don't speak English and no one around us helped, so we had just poor coffee once coming, and brought stuff with us for the trip back. Not too much to see from the train either, particularly on the return when it is night the whole way.

If you decide to go, take a private tour and avoid the overly expensive ship's tour. I'm glad we did it, but wouldn't bother to repeat the tour; we've seen Moscow.

Thanks so much to all of you for the thorough and thought insight. Yhe information you have provided is most helpful.

countflorida: Your detailed post is very helpful. We are not quite ready for a Baltic cruise but should do so within a year. Time enough to do our pre travel research, bookings and visa gathering.:) Thank you!

I did this on Seabourn. IMO DONT. Take Aeroflop (er Aeroflot). The train has non folding seats where you are literally knee to knee with your fellow passenger (facing each other). Further they don't believe in air conditioning. It's also the worlds slowed bullet train. I think I would have found more enjoyment wandering around the St. Petersburg and Moscow airports.

Countflorida,

This is a little off topic,, however we had planned a river cruise in Russia but decided we would rather stay on land and have booked about two weeks with Travel-All-Russia using the private guide and driver. I'm curious as to how you found them as a tour company.

The guides they provided were fine. We had a different guide each of the days in St. Petersburg, but both were flexible, pleasant, knowledgeable and spoke English very well, as did the guide in Moscow, incidentally. She was a bit aloof, distant, not too friendly, but otherwise fine. In fact, she was the one who suggested taking the Metro, which unexpectedly became one of the highlights of the Moscow excursion. If I have a complaint with AllTravelRussia, it is with their plan and its execution (more later).

I had requested emphasis on World War II (in Russia, the Great Patriotic War) sites and info. In scheduling us, they weren't careful about dates and a couple of the sites we wanted to see were scheduled on the third day, after we'd been to Moscow. But both sites were closed that day of the week, and that info was readily available, right on web sites describing them. Also, the included meals (lunches in St. Pete, dinner in Moscow) were not what we asked for: light meals with some choices, so we could avoid things we didn't like and choose things we did like. My request was ignored; we were given full Russian meals with a fixed menu, no choice. On the first day, a fish dish was the entre, but I am allergic to fish. Fortunately, I had the e-mail I'd sent with me and showed it to the guide, and she was able to change my entre to chicken, which was very good actually. But we didn't want a 3-4 course lunches or dinner (in Moscow). We had the guide drop the lunch the third day, although we never got any credit or refund. But, particularly in contrast to the ship's tours, the prices were so reasonable we didn't worry too much about it.

The people who were on the ship's tour to Moscow saw us boarding the same train for which they were forced to queue up and wait on the way back, and asked us what we had done. I was candid and open so they were not happy when I explained what we had arranged and particularly what it had cost. Also, when we returned to the ship, we found they had laid on a late supper for those who had gone to Moscow, so up we went and had something. Well, it turns out the late supper was supposed to be just for those on the ship's tour, but we and others on 'independent' tours, there were a dozen or more of us, crashed the party, actually got there first, and they didn't realize it until the larger group arrived and there weren't enough tables/places set. By that time, the 'independents' had all gotten served and were eating; what could they do?

A couple from the larger group sat down with us and asked us about our tour, and they were the ones I told about our arrangement and its cost. They turned to others who’d been with them and announced the details, loudly enough so the whole room heard, which started a lot of bitching and complaining. I gathered they weren't very happy with the ship's tour to begin with, and this was the straw that broke the camel's back. We finished up and beat it out of there, but overheard later that one of the excursion staff came to check on something and ran into a real mess. I caught a cold on the trip, which forced me to bed the second day following in Tallinn, so by the time we reappeared we heard about the contretemps' but apparently no one recalled who started it, thankfully.

Because of what happened to us, I would probably not use AllTravelRussia if I were to go again, or if I did, I would be sure to get confirmation of every detail of the tour. They do have good reviews generally, and we were certainly helped by their visa department and liked the guides and drivers. Their weakness, I say now with full 20:20 hindsight, is that once the sales person who plans the tour, sells it to you and collects your money, he (or she) transfers the plan to their Russia office for implementation; there is no follow-up to make sure it gets done right. And that is where our problems arose; we paid for a custom tour but got a standard package with a few destinations switched, and no one checked them out, even to see when they were open the day we were scheduled to go. If you check every detail that’s important to you, it should be OK, but that’s a hell of a way to have to do business, in my opinion.

Thank you for the 20/20 hindsight observation on your Russian tour operator, and better priced than the ship's excursion cost.

Thanks very much for the feedback.

We had the same experience as you so far as price. We originally booked a Viking Cruise but, hearing some things about the river cruises that made us unhappy, looked into other options. T-A-R cost the same or less than a cruise and had us in hotels for 11 days. We opted for the private tour. They have three tour levels, based on hotels. We originally opted for the four star as it did not cost much more than the three star hotels. Finally we decided to throw it all in and upgraded to five star. In Moscow we will be at the newly opened Kempinsky which is two blocks from Red Square. In St. Petersburg it is the Grand Hotel Europe, one of the most vaunted luxury hotels in Russia. Location is important for us as the tours use up only part of the day so being in the center of everything for our independent touring is important. As with many other cities, the less you pay, the farther out of the center of town you are.

We have been working with our salesman in D.C. and he seems to get back to us with the changes we want. He recently returned from Russia so is up on everything. When I asked they said they paid the full TA commission if I wanted so I got my usual TA on board so he is watching our back and giving us that extra level of comfort. He also set up our air, which I know pays him little or nothing, and got us business class for much less than T-A-R wanted for economy, though it took working for a while with a consolidator. He's happy to get his 10 percent on this trip without having booked it. He also took care of the trip insurance. We've been doing a lot of research on the CC sister site Trip Advisor and will write a report there. We will, I guess, become a source of info for CC members after having spent 5 days in Moscow and 6 in SP.

Idaho WWAMI is a partnership between the nationally-ranked University of Washington School of Medicine and Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Idaho (WWAMI). Since 1972, the University of Idaho has partnered with the UW School of Medicine to help educate and provide training for Idaho’s future physicians.

Idaho WWAMI students - all considered Idaho residents - begin their training at the University of Idaho, where they will complete the first 18 months of curriculum, also known as the Foundations Phase. Students then move into the Clinical Phase, where they participate in required clinical experiences. These experiences can be based primarily out of Idaho, are offered in urban and/or rural settings, and/or across the WWAMI region, depending on the student's interests.

The curriculum taught at each WWAMI site, is a joint product of the UW School of Medicine. While each site has its own instructors and may offering specific electives, (such as wilderness medicine offered to Idaho students), all WWAMI students learn the same core curriculum at the same time.

Idaho WWAMI has five primary goals for the State of Idaho:

  • Provide publicly supported medical education
  • Increase the number of primary care physicians
  • Provide community-based medical education
  • Expand graduate medical education (residency training) and continuing medical education
  • Provide all of this in a cost-effective manner

Idaho WWAMI has an excellent rate of return: 51% of our graduates choose to practice in Idaho — well above the national average of 39%.
