Cruising Experience with Genting Dream by Dream Cruises

Check out my experience on board with Genting Dream Cruise – what activities you can do, restaurants to try, and list of entertainments including shows and casino!

I did the cruising twice, one was 5D4N Singapore – Surabaya – North Bali – Singapore , the second one was 3D2N cruising from Singapore – Port Klang – Singapore .

When was the last time I did cruising, nearly 18 years ago!

Yep, I was still a little kid at that time.

I could only recall a few things, things that of course a kid would love – swimming pool, circus, and casino.

Wait, casino? How was a kid supposed to know about casino?

Easy, that’s where my parents would go right after me and my siblings fell asleep.

And now, 18 years later, I had a chance to be back on cruise again – this time with Genting Dream Cruise .

So, let’s jump in to my Genting Dream Cruise review!

Getting on Board with Genting Dream Cruise

Entering the port, I saw this big building on distance, and it wasn’t a building.

It’s the ship that I’m going to board, man it’s huge!

The port was busy, with guests from the cruise hopping down on shore to get souvenirs or just to stay on land.

While some other local audiences just hang around the port to marvel this big ship, something that can be rarely seen.

We cleared the registration ( make sure you bring your passport ) and headed up to the room.

I had a double room with a balcony outside . It’s bigger than I thought.

The bed was super comfy, seriously I had perfect sleep throughout the night.

There’s a sofa to lay down when I’m not wearing my pajamas, complete set of sandals and bathrobes, oh and I love their shower gel, smells good.

The little balcony is perfect to chill or to watch sunset.

I’m super ready to explore Genting Dream Cruise!

Eat while you can

One of a friend told me; before you start cruising, measure your weight and after you’re back home, you’ll be surprised!

Now I understand why.

There’s no way to not stuffing yourself with all these yummy food.

With restaurants serving high quality food, ranging from Asian to Western Cuisine, you’ll forget all your dietaries rule and, just feed yourself.

The inclusive restaurants in Genting Dream are Lido Restaurant and Dream Dining Room .

Lido Restaurant serves more varieties of food with buffet style while Dream Dining Room serves Chinese cuisine.

I had my breakfast normally in these restaurants.

The other restaurants that I also tried were the Hotpot, Bistro by Mark Best, Blue Lagoon, and Umi Uma .

blue lagoon restaurant genting dream cruise review

If I had to choose one of my favorite restaurants ,  I think I’ll go for Bistro by Mark Best and Umi Uma ( sorry, I can’t decide between these two ).

I think the food at the Bistro is just on another level for fine dining.

The tenderloin steak was soft and juicy with seasoning on point and the mouth-watering matcha mousse just melt when you take a spoon of it.

Thinking of it now makes me regret, why didn’t I order more food?

Tenderloin steak the Bistro Genting Dream

My other favorite restaurant in Genting Dream Cruise is Umi Uma Restaurant .

You can guess from its name that it’s a Japanese Restaurant, meaning that there’ll be sushi, sashimi, bento, udon ( I love them all!).

The highlight of this restaurant is the teppanyaki performance .

You’ll be sitting around a table with a chef cooking right on your face.

The chefs are very entertaining.

They pull off some fun attractive moves such as singing, juggling, like, spinning the eggs and throw them to the chef’s hat while cooking your food.

I really enjoy the interactions between the chefs and the guests, the atmosphere in the restaurant is full of excitement.

You definitely have to go to Umi Uma.

Other activities and entertainments in Genting Dream Cruise

Frankly, I was thinking what could I do inside the ship for such a long time.

But after all the experiences in Genting Dream Cruise, clearly there’s nothing to worry about.

There are so many things to do and you won’t get bored for sure.

Again, the ship is huge. Sometimes I still forgot the direction back to my room.

Let’s have a look what’s inside Genting Dream, shall we?

1. Zodiac Theater

Every night there will be show scheduled in Zodiac Theater.

With shimmering outfits and stage, the talented performers will stun you with their dancing skills and acrobatic movements.

Voyage of the Lovers Dream is a must to watch in Genting Dream Cruise.

The theatrical show will take you to a fantasy world of the unique love story between the mermaid and the astronaut.

Some dances can be powerful, some features remarkable ballet moves. For me it’s a night to remember.

2. The Bridge Tour

See what it’s like to be on a captain seat with the Bridge Tour.

The Bridge is the most important area of the ship where the captain and his officers control and ensure that the ship runs safely on the sea.

The crew, as a guide will explain how to see the numbers on screen telling the depth of the sea, the speed, etc.

You may also have a conversation with the friendly officers.

3. Pool, Water Slide, and Sportplex

Pool and sportplex area always get busy during the day.

There’s always be activities prepared by the crew such as games, aerobic, and many more.

I didn’t try the water slide but I bet it’s gonna be fun.

There’s even a basketball court on the ship! I did the wall-climbing, rope course, and the flying-fox.

The flying-fox is one of my best experience on the ship, it’s nerve-wrecking.

Imagine you’re zip-lining from one end to another with wide open sea below, and it’s like 35 meters high!

4. Crystal Life Fitness and Spa

You may eat a lot but at least gotta burn some calories, agree?

Head to the Crystal Life Fitness Center in Genting Dream Cruise and do some cardio workout or weight-lifting, even better.

Believe me, doing workout facing the sea is not things you can do regularly, except on the cruise-so make it count!

Then you can spoil yourself with the spa treatment, what a life!

5. Bar Hopping!

Need a bit of alcohol intake to make yourself a bit more relax?

Bars are just on every corner of Dream Cruise.

If you’d like to drink while getting your tan line under the sun then Pool Deck Bar or Sun Deck Bar is the place for you.

Champagne lovers? Straight to the Bubbles Champagne Bar .

I prefer the Johnnie Walker House as a fan of whisky ( sounds like an old man, eh ).

Look at this gorgeous Whisky Constellation Wall, offering a comprehensive index of Scotch whisky distilleries.

6. Zouk Club and Zouk Beach Club

Surprisingly, my favorite club, Zouk is inside the Genting Dream.

I was a regular at the Zouk Club Kuala Lumpur and knowing that there’s another Zouk inside the cruise reminds me of that old nights.

The DJs were great, also the lights and lasers are sick, surely meet the Zouk’s standard.

If you wanna chill a bit you can go next door to play bowling or billiard.

Another best moment in the Dream Cruise.

7. Genting Casino

Like my parents, cruising is a fun way to spend your money and bet for your luck in the casino.

Get the chips ready and hit the table, who knows you’ll bring a suitcase of dollars back home.

I don’t really see many tables on board. However, there’re some slot machines that you can play with.

The minimum bet for casino tables in Genting Dream Cruise ranges between SGD 100 – 200 .

For the machines, it shouldn’t cost that much, maybe around SGD 10 .

8. Party and Fireworks

The last night on the ship was full of blast! Everyone’s just dancing and had fun in the main pool deck.

No matter young or old, people just dance to the music and follow the movements by the crew on the stage, like a flashmob.

Looks like everyone enjoying their time, including me.

Before calling it a night, we watched the fireworks on the sea and time for sweet dreams.

Second time with Genting Dream Cruise

Far flung in the middle of the sea, a ship – immensely built and designed to award holiday-seekers with its most luxurious experience – sailed across the Malacca Strait from Singapore to Malaysia.

The art piece on the both sides of the vessel is tastefully crafted to leave a strong impression to anyone who lays eyes on it.

Genting Dream Cruise Singapore , set on its journey to entertain more than 3,000 passengers on board, including myself.

That could be a nice narrative for an intro or trailer of a movie, can you imagine that? haha .

I think I’m trying to hard to put a nice words – which I love to try for learning and practicing my writing.

So, recently I just had a trip with Genting Dream Cruise ( again! ) and I’m very excited to share it with you guys.

As you might have known, this was my second time, as always, it never failed to please me.

My Genting Dream Cruise Singapore Experience: Enroute Singapore – Port Klang – Singapore

The route that I had this time was an easy and fun 3D2N, cruising from Singapore to Port Klang and back to Singapore .

It’s also the most popular since it’s do-able for weekend trip.

Once I arrived at Marina Bay Cruise Centre , the giant ship was waiting calmly before embarking to its destination, Port Klang in Malaysia.

I couldn’t stop myself from admiring, even though it’s not my first time – either Genting Dream Cruise is too good-looking, or maybe I just missed her.

Same procedure, checking-in, clearing the immigration and custom, and lastly getting on board!

I won’t really go into details this time, cause I’ve written about it on my last post.

It’ll be more about my experience and things that I had not experience before, let’s get started!

Privacy at The Palace Suite

One thing that I noticed being in a large cruise ship was, obviously, in contact with a bee-swarm of other passengers who would likely use the facilities provided.

It can be quite overwhelming for those who prefer to enjoy the cruise peacefully.

Elevate your cruising experience by staying in The Palace – part boutique hotel, part private clubhouse – meticulously shaped to ensure absolute comfort.

Indulge in between these four different types of room or suite in The Palace: Palace Suite, Palace Deluxe Suite, Palace Penthouse, and Palace Villa .

palace suite genting dream cruise

An additional benefit for staying at The Palace is the exclusive facilities, privately accessible only for The Palace’s guests including the swimming pool, jacuzzi, gym, even dining area.

On the second day on Genting Dream Cruise, we had a chance to explore the swimming pool area, no one was there.

It might be too early for people to swim at that time but it’s  a good timing for us to hit every corner and get the best angle to capture nice picture.

If only I had the whole day just relaxing, putting all the itineraries prepared for us on the side, I probably could spend the rest of the day swimming and sun-bathing here on this deck.

There are two jacuzzis just right in the front facing the ocean.

The sun, blue sky, ocean, and fancy cruise, couldn’t ask for a better way to enjoy life!

chilling genting dream

Dine, Spa, and Entertainment in Genting Dream Cruise

One thing I worried the most, and I knew it would be hard for me to handle while I was with Genting Dream Cruise.

Guess what? It’s to hold the temptation to eat all the food served at the restaurants.

Every time I stepped into a restaurant, I needed to remind myself to control my eating, or else all the diet and workouts that I had done would be useless.

You all know what happened next, don’t you? Screw the diet, I’m on holiday!

The sound of clattering spatula hitting the iron plate table jumbled with the sizzling sound of the ingredients.

Occasionally, a gleeful voice shouting in a high pitch jacked up the chaos inside the room, a good chaos.

Umi Uma Restaurant was filled with happiness, laughter, and admiration thanks to the Kungfu Chef.

Here in Uma Umi Restaurant, the food that you order will be made on spot by the chef.

On top of that, with a good sense of humor, the chef entertains everyone as a starter before the food is served and enjoyed.

I ordered the Dream Ocean from the menu, the shrimp and scallop are the rock star, served with fried rice, miso soup, and refreshing salad.

I finished everything to the last bite.

That was my first sin, the second one was lunch at Bistro by Mark Best – which wasn’t so bad in a way – that the portion was still acceptable for my diet.

It’s a fine dining anyway, a small but punching food could take me literally to heaven, cause it’s so yum!

First, they brought us a basket of bread and a plate full of salami and prosciutto.

Next, for the appetizer, a bowl of thick cauliflower soup with a drop of caviar, all the flavor exploded in my mouth!

Then the main came, pan-seared cod  with a special creamy puree and to wrap everything up, a delicate green tea cake.

umi uma restaurant genting dream

Meanwhile, when we had a bit of free time, exploring the cruise on our own was the only thing to do, better than staying inside the room.

Deck 16 and 17 were the area in Genting Dream Cruise that we hung around the most.

It’s the open area and for sure, people would love to enjoy the sun and do outdoor activities.

Everything is free to use, from swimming pool, playground, flying fox, basketball court, and outdoor beach club.

playground genting dream experience

I did try a one-hour massage here in Crystal Life Spa .

The appearance of the furniture, decoration, and the choice of color was very nice, soft and relaxing.

Before entering the room, a form was given to me and I could choose which part of my body would get more attention later on, I chose neck and shoulder, my favorite area.

The full body massage began from my back, down to my legs, and ended up with a massage in my head.

It was good, the masseuse was attentive and questioned if the strength was good enough.

I fell asleep not long before the massage finished.

Crystal spa genting dream

In my previous trip with Genting Dream Cruise, I didn’t get the chance to watch China Got Talent .

That’s why I was very excited to see the show.

It felt like we’re the audience and the judges were projected on big screen, giving comments to the performers. Some acts were thrilling, some were creative.

It goes without saying, all these performers show their best talent to entertain everyone on board.

Go watch them yourself, I don’t wanna be a spoiler!

chinese got talent performer

Sadly, everything has come to an end. Three days were too quick.

I definitely wanna check other routes by Genting Dream Cruise, maybe to Japan, or Thailand.

Or maybe it’s sister cruise, World Dream Cruise, will see!

Cruise Ship Casino Gambling: Everything to Know Before You Bet

When it comes to cruising, gambling in the ship’s casino is one of the most popular activities. In fact, in the late evening it can be the busiest spot on the entire ship.

Horizon casino sign

In many ways the casinos on a cruise are very similar to what you’ll find on land — just on a smaller scale. If you’re someone who loves gaming, then you’ll feel right at home.

That said, there are still a number of things you should know before gambling on a cruise. Having sailed dozens of cruises (and seemingly always finding time to spend in the casino), we have lots of experience in what you can expect if you pay onboard.

If you’ve never placed a bet on a ship, the tips and details below will make you a pro in no time and teach you everything you need to know before you try your luck.

Which Cruise Ships Have Casinos?

If you’re wondering if there will be a casino on your ship, you can rest assured there will be. Mass market lines like Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, and the like always have casinos on the ship .  (Note: Norwegian Cruise Line’s Pride of America, a U.S.-flagged ship that sails Hawaii, is one of the few ships from a mass market cruise line without a casino.) As well, names like Princess, Celebrity, Virgin, and others do too.

The only major line we’ve heard of that doesn’t have gambling is Disney.

You’ll find the casinos located in the middle of the ship, typically near the most highly-trafficked areas. So if your ship has a main promenade, the casino will be right near it. This makes sense as putting the casino easily accessible means it’s easier for players to find and gamble.

What Are Cruise Casinos Like?

Casino on Norwegian Encore

In many ways cruise ship gambling is similar to what you’ll find on land. That also means that while they all feel familiar with flashing lights and dinging bells, each casino has its own personality.

In general, the gaming floor is small by the standards of land-based casinos. On many ships, you’ll usually find closed-in areas with relatively low ceilings (decks above and below limit the ceiling height). The low ceilings and maze of games give the casinos a cozy feel. Still, they are among the largest rooms on a cruise ship.

Some ships — most notably the newer ships in many fleets — have more open casinos. It’s not every new ship, but often they have a casino floor opens up to the rest of the ship and even have windows, giving it a brighter and more airy feel.

As for atmosphere, within seconds of walking into a cruise ship casino you’ll forget that you’re on a ship. Give the casino size and number of passengers, evenings can get crowded. That means the casino will feel high energy, with lots of people cheering, noise from machines, and generally a festive atmosphere.

What Are Payouts Like in the Casino?

Video poker machine payouts

Everyone knows that the odds are always in the house’s favor when it comes to gambling. That’s especially true on a cruise.

For example, the gold standard for video poker is a “9/6” machine — one that pays nine credits for a full house and six for a flush. This gives an expected payout of 99.5% if proper strategy is used over the long term. On ships you will often find “6/5” machines, meaning they offer a 94.9% payback if you play long enough with perfect strategy. (Hunt around you might find better payouts.)

For blackjack you’ll often find tables that pay 6-to-5 on blackjack instead of the normal 3-to-2. If you play a higher-limit table, then you might still find 3-to-2 payouts.

Craps will have odds bets, but they will be restricted somewhat. The best you can hope for is 3X-4X-5X, but we’ve seen some ships with even lower bets available. They also often have the “Big 6/8” bets at tables that have a higher house edge.

So go to the casino and have fun, but if your plan is to get the best payouts, then you are often better off with independent land-based casinos.

What’s the Gambling Age on a Cruise Ship?

While there are some exceptions, the majority of places in the United States require you to be 21 to gamble in a casino.

On a cruise — which heads to international waters — the minimum age to gamble is 18 years old . If you’ve ever wanted to try your luck but haven’t been old enough to head to Las Vegas, a cruise ship might be your best bet.

One thing to know is that if you head on a cruise to Alaska from the United States, then the age may be bumped up to 21 years old.

Casino Minimums for Table Games and Slot Machines

Slot machines on a cruise

If you’re a low-stakes gambler, then you’ll feel right at home on a cruise ship. Minimums across games are generally low, making it affordable for any level of player to enjoy themselves.

Of course, there are penny slots as you’ll find in any casino (along with higher-stakes machines — usually up to a $1 machines — if you feel so inclined). On table games you will find minimums starting at $5 for many games, but sometimes they start at $10.

This makes sense considering the potential customer base on a cruise. With only a few thousand people on the ship (compared to millions of people within a drive of a regular casino) the cruise needs to be sure to appeal to the most people possible.

What Casino Games Are Available on a Cruise?

dream cruise casino minimum bet

Like playing slots? You’re covered. What about blackjack… or craps… or roulette? They have them all. Despite the small size of cruise ship casinos compared to those on land, they offer a wide variety of games.

For instance, while you won’t find table after of blackjack, there will be a few, and usually at least one craps table. There is also roulette and often other specialty table games like baccarat and others. Texas Hold ‘Em poker games is also popular, with tournaments and play throughout the cruise. In general, the larger your cruise ship, the more variety of games you can expect.

What’s a little surprising is that there are several games you won’t ever find on land that are on a cruise. One is similar to a “skill crane” where you use a joystick to move a key to push down stacks of dollar bills. But perhaps the most popular are the coin pusher machines.

The coin pusher machines are exactly like you’d find in an arcade, but instead of tokens, they use quarters. You can try your luck to push quarters over the edge, along with wads of cash that are also in the machines.

Many cruise lines also offer their own scratch-off tickets available for purchase, as well as big lotto-style drawings with jackpots worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Casino Games Available (Will Vary by Ship)

  • Slot Machines
  • Video Poker
  • Three Card Poker
  • Let It Ride
  • Caribbean Stud Poker
  • Texas Hold ‘Em
  • Coin Pushers
  • Scratch-Offs
  • Lotto Draws

When Are the Cruise Ship Casinos Open?

As you might guess, there are a number of laws that oversee casino gambling, depending on the jurisdiction the ship is in. That’s why there’s a simple rule — the casino is open when the ship is at sea .

On the day that you board the casino will be closed (although you are still free to enter and check out the offerings). It will open up later that night after the ship has set sail. As well, during days in port the games are closed, but available once the ship exits the jurisdiction of the port country. During days at sea, the casino will be open all day.

Note that if you want to play during off hours — such as early in the morning on a day at sea — then table games will not be staffed (they often open for play around 10 a.m. on days at sea). However, coin pushers and slot machines will still be available to play.

Are Drinks Free in the Cruise Ship Casino?

It’s common in most casinos to get free drinks while you gamble, but that’s not the case on a cruise. Most people still have to pay out of pocket for their drinks while gambling. The casino will have a bar that you can visit. Prices are the same as what you’ll find elsewhere on the ship. Expect to pay $6-8 for a beer and $10-14 for a cocktail. Gratuity is extra.

If you achieve a high enough loyalty status (cruise lines have their own loyalty programs, just like land-based casinos) you can get free beverages. For most people, however, usually you will be paying out of pocket for alcohol.

Are There ATMs on the Ship? Can I Charge to the Room?

If you need cash to play and forget to bring some (or you run out of money and need to refill your bankroll), then you have a couple of options.

First, there are ATMs on the cruise ship. You can usually find these in the casino or near the Guest Services area. Just keep in mind they charge to get money out; often between $6-8 per transaction. If you can’t find one, just ask and the staff will point you in the right direction.

Second, you can charge money to your room account just like you would a drink or a service at the spa. There is usually no charge for this at a slot machine, and a few percent at table games.

Are Casinos Beginner Friendly?

Casino floor on Allure of the Seas

If there is a casino game you’ve always wanted to play, but have been too intimidated to pull up a chair, then a cruise is perfect for you.

Not only is it less intimidating than a regular casino, but they even offer classes on table games for beginning players. You can come and learn how to play free of charge so that when it’s time to play for real money you aren’t as intimidated.

In addition, the vibe at a cruise casino is simply more friendly. Remember that the dealers want to make sure you have an enjoyable time on the cruise and your other passengers are typically in a good mood (and not hardcore gamblers). In addition, the stakes are typically low, so there’s usually not a ton of money at stake.

Are Loyalty Programs Available? Can I Earn Comps?

One big draw to gambling in a regular casino is getting special perks and rewards for your play. Well, cruise lines have the same sort of program where you can earn all sorts of comps for your play from drinks to wi-fi to even free cruises.

In fact, to earn rewards, you don’t have to register or anything. Simply put your keycard into the machine or give it to the dealer at the table and your play will be tracked. Play enough and you’ll start to receive offers and benefits based on your wagers.

For more info, you can always see a cashier on the ship for the details of how the programs work.

Other Things to Know About Gambling on a Cruise

cruise ship craps table

Cashing Out — If you’re sailing Carnival or Princess, then one thing to know is that you need to have your room keycard inserted into a machine to cash out. The money on the machine is then credited your to you player account (not a voucher printout) that can be used for another machine.

If you try to cash out without your card inserted, then you’ll have to wait on an attendant to pay by hand. When done playing, you can go to the cashier to be paid your balance in cash.

Other cruise lines use the printed voucher system that most land-based casinos use.

Smoking — While smoking is banned in indoor spaces across the ship, it is normally allowed in the casinos. Be warned that the smaller size of the casinos on the ship means that it can be tough to get away from smoke if you are sensitive. If you have someone sitting next to you smoking at a slot machine, there may not be many options for other machines to play.

Tournaments  — There are slot and blackjack tournaments on the ship. They typically take place during off hours for the casino (such as late morning or early afternoon). These tournaments can win you some money while risking only the admission fee.

If you want to play, then check the daily calendar that’s delivered to your cabin each day or on the cruise line app. There will be a listing of any tournaments going on during that day.

fyi, found my answer; the carnival’s fun play credit must be used all for gambling in its casino, either at slot or table games; any winning then can be converted to cash chips or actual cash; OBCs otoh, can be charged to room then cashed out at slot machine. Thx anyway

any chance fun play $ could be charged to room then cashed out at slot machine like OBC’s? Thx

Not entirely sure what you mean, but you can charge money to the room in the casino and then head to the cashier to get cash when you’re done playing.

CAN I JUST PLAY WITH CASH OR DO USE MY ROOM Card, I dont want my husband to know how much I am gambling lol

You can use cash. Any charges to the room card will be seen on your onboard account.

Nautical Tidbit: I was cruising and playing the slots, roulette and an occassional table game on the MSC Seashore back in July. The machine near the entrance pays the best. The ship has a huge neon sign on the exterior of the ship with the brightly lit word, Seashore, on each side of the top decks of the vessel. Well, at one port, I glanced at the sign on the port side to see some of the letters not lit. It read Sea hore. Mmmm… At the next port of San Juan, additional letters dissapeared and it read: Sea ho Embarrassing.

Taxes are withheld for jackpot winnings over $1199 (same rule is followed at sea as in United States)

We both play Video Poker but never on a ship. I understand they want profit but empty machines aren’t profitable ! Most people want some play time for their money

Royal Carribean has the world’s worst craps rules. Single odds, unless you bet $50 line bets, charge $2 to buy a $35 bet on 4, inconsistent rules on hitting the back wall (whatever favors the casino), etc. Also advertise hold em, but can’t get a game going because they only offer 2/5.

Is there anything you can do about them not giving you a full payout for winning a jackpot

Not sure what you mean. Why wouldn’t they give you what you won?

Cruise Ship Casinos: Everything to Know Before You Bet

Cruise ship casinos: Everything you need to know about gambling at sea

Melinda Crow

Cruise ship casino gambling is a big deal to some cruisers. You know how you often hear people on a cruise ship planning their day around the entertainment, tours and mealtimes? Last night, I eavesdropped on a conversation where a group of six people was planning their entire next day around time in the ship's casino.

For other cruisers, the casino is more of an onboard curiosity than anything else. What are all those table games? Do people actually win money — or free cruises — playing in cruise ship casinos?

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

If you're curious, I've compiled answers to the most common questions people ask about cruise ship casinos. Some of the answers may surprise you.

Do all cruise ships have casinos?

dream cruise casino minimum bet

Most large, mainstream cruise ships have casinos, including the ships of Carnival Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, MSC Cruises, Holland America, Norwegian Cruise Line (other than Pride of America), Celebrity Cruises, Princess Cruises and Virgin Voyages.

Specialty cruise lines like Disney Cruise Line, Paul Gauguin and most expedition cruise ships do not have casinos. Premium cruise lines Oceania Cruises and Cunard have casinos, while Viking, Azamara and Windstar Cruises do not. (Windstar and Azamara actually removed casinos from their ships and repurposed the space.)

Among the luxury cruise lines, Silversea and Seabourn have casinos on their non-expedition ships; Regent Seven Seas has casinos on all its ships. Smaller luxury ships like those belonging to Ponant, Ritz-Carlton, Scenic and Emerald do not have casinos. River cruise lines do not have casinos on board, even on U.S. rivers where "riverboat" gambling is reserved for casino boats, not river cruise ships.

Are cruise casinos open in port?

With a few exceptions, cruise casinos are not open while ships are in port. They are generally limited to operating while the ship is in international waters. This is why Norwegian's Pride of America doesn't have a casino. Since the ship cruises exclusively in Hawaii, it never leaves U.S. waters.

Cruisers are also often surprised to learn that the casino is closed on some nights during Alaska cruises . Cruises that sail from Victoria, British Columbia, to Seattle on the final night are a good example. The ship goes straight from Canadian waters to U.S. waters without ever reaching international open waters, so the casino closes the night before arrival in Victoria and does not reopen during the cruise.

Ports that currently allow the cruise lines to operate their casinos while the ship is in port include Bermuda and Malta, which require cruise lines to apply for a gaming license. Bermuda has allowed casino operations for licensed ships between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. since 2013. It's an ideal situation as Bermuda has no land-based casinos, and many cruise ships overnight in port on Bermuda cruises. Malta, which does have land-based casinos, allows ships that have been approved for licenses to open their casinos between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m.

Which casino games are on cruise ships?

Gaming in cruise ship casinos usually includes a mix of slot machines and table games, such as three-card poker, Caribbean stud poker, craps, blackjack and roulette. Regionally popular table games like Texas Hold 'em and pai gow may also be available on some sailings.

Can you win money in a cruise ship casino?

dream cruise casino minimum bet

Most cruise ship casino games operate under the same rules and payout percentages you would find in a land-based casino; therefore, the answer is yes, you can win money in a cruise ship casino.

Social media posts and casino announcements would indicate that at least a small handful of people win four- and even occasionally five-figure slot machine payouts on a regular basis. But just as in a land-based casino, it's far easier to lose your stake than it is to win that kind of money.

How many casino points do you need to get a free cruise?

As at land-based casinos, each cruise line offering gambling on board sets its own criteria for earning perks through the line's casino loyalty program or players club. Points are generally tied to the time played and the amount of money you gamble, including the money you win and recirculate.

Much like an airline loyalty program, casino points usually accumulate over a year, earning you better perks as you work toward increasingly higher status levels. Annual free or discounted cruises are one of those perks, often beginning with complimentary (aka comped) inside cabins at relatively low status levels.

Many casinos also let you match casino status from land-based casinos (or even other cruise lines), giving you a leg up. For example, I haven't cruised with Carnival in a while, and I've never played in the line's onboard casinos, but I signed up for the Carnival players club via its Fun Match program. When I registered, I uploaded an offer from a competing cruise line and a players club card from MGM. Now when I log in to Carnival's website, I am shown casino offers that include free and discounted cruises.

Related: How to earn free cruises and perks with casino loyalty programs on land and at sea

Some cruise lines also issue instant awards for the number of points earned (i.e., money spent) on an individual cruise, regardless of status. That would be like an airline awarding free future flights to passengers who spent the most money on their flights, no matter their loyalty status.

Most mainstream cruise lines use comped cruises to fill cabins on dates they anticipate having a surplus of vacancies. These extra offers often appear random, but are generally targeted for marketing purposes rather than as rewards for high amounts of play. New players may receive these comps after low levels of play because cruise lines are always interested in attracting new casino players.

All of that adds up to the possibility of receiving a free cruise for a small number of points earned for cruising, as well as guaranteed free cruises as your points rise to the levels of play set out in the cruise lines' casino loyalty programs.

What is the best casino game to play on a cruise ship?

dream cruise casino minimum bet

The best casino game to play on a cruise ship is the one that is most entertaining for you. Ultimately, you play to have fun, right?

The games that require a combination of skill and luck are the ones where the odds of winning are in your favor. For example, the overall odds on blackjack favor the casino by only 1%, while the casino has a 25% edge overall when it comes to slot machines.

Those odds mean the cruise lines operating casinos will favor slot machine players over card players, both in terms of the number of games provided and the loyalty perks awarded.

In summary, for winning money, the best games are skill games. For earning loyalty perks like free cruises, slot machines are the best choice.

Are drinks free in the casino on cruise ships?

Historically, drinks have not been free to cruise ship casino gamblers the way they usually are in land-based casinos. There are exceptions, however.

Free drinks in the casino are a perk of casino loyalty on Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Princess, Holland America and Norwegian Cruise Line. Reach the required level, and you'll earn free drinks from the casino bar, usually for a full status year. Carnival, Princess and Virgin Voyages also often throw in free drinks (either in the casino or throughout the ship) for individual comped cruises. Everyone actively gambling in the casino gets free well drinks on Celebrity cruises.

In addition, drinks are free in the casinos of luxury cruise lines like Silversea, Seabourn and Regent Seven Seas because all onboard drinks are included in the cruise fare. On the big-ship lines, anyone who purchases a drinks package or cruises on a fare that includes drinks will also be drinking "free" in the casino.

Are cruise ship casinos regulated?

dream cruise casino minimum bet

Cruise ship casinos are regulated in two ways. They typically adhere to the laws of the ship's country of registry. But because gambling normally only takes place while the ship is in international waters, cruise lines that sail from U.S. ports also adhere to the rules set out by the Cruise Lines International Association. Those rules state that all equipment purchased and installed on the vessels of member cruise lines will meet the regulatory standards of the Nevada Gaming Control Board or other licensed jurisdiction for payback and internal software.

Additionally, house rules must be made available in every casino. Each member cruise line is to post at every gaming table minimum and maximum betting limits for each game, and only adults are allowed to play the slots or the tables.

What's the age minimum to gamble in a cruise ship casino?

The minimum age for gambling in a cruise ship casino is 18 in most cases, but there are exceptions. MSC Cruises has a minimum gambling age of 21 on any cruise with a U.S. port; otherwise, the age is 18. Some cruise lines, including Royal Caribbean and Celebrity, raise the minimum age to 21 on Alaska sailings.

Do ships run casino tournaments?

Cruise ship casinos on mainstream cruise lines often host tournaments on board featuring various casino games. The list includes slot tournaments, as well as card game tournaments for blackjack and Texas Hold 'em.

Some tournaments are invitational, offered to casino loyalty members of a certain level only. These are often held on cruises hosted specifically for players who have reached that level. For instance, Royal Caribbean holds Signature cruises designed to pamper and entertain these top-level players.

Can you smoke in the casino?

Casinos are often seen as the last bastion of cruise ship smoking freedom (beyond small, designated areas on deck). But the number of ships that offer nonsmoking casinos is steadily growing.

Celebrity Cruises does not allow smoking in its ships' casinos, and the relatively small casinos on luxury ships are generally nonsmoking, as well.

Several lines have hybrid options. For example, some Carnival ships have separate smoking and nonsmoking casinos. Norwegian has separate smoking rooms on some ships; however, cigarette smoking and e-cigarette use are allowed in casinos on ships that don't have separate smoking rooms. Princess does not allow smoking except at designated slot machines, and Holland America also has designated smoking areas in the casino.

Do cruise ship casinos take cash?

dream cruise casino minimum bet

Cruise ship casinos accept cash at both slot machines and table games. As an example, you can sit down at a slot machine and feed in a $20 bill, which is then converted into "credits" on the machine's screen. The value of the credit depends on the denomination of the machine. Alternatively, you might walk up to a roulette table and lay down $20 and exchange that for chips.

The exchange of cash at machines and tables is a one-way deal, even when you win. Slot machines and dealers in cruise ship casinos don't dispense cash. When you finish playing, you may be issued a paper credit slip to take to the cashier's cage for cash, or you may have your winnings loaded directly onto your onboard account on some cruise lines. At the tables, you will take chips to the cashier to exchange back into cash.

If you don't travel with cash, you can find ATMs in the casino or at guest services. Alternatives to cash in cruise ship casinos are paper credit slips, which can be played as cash at either machines or tables, onboard credit or casino free play loaded on your stateroom account, or lines of credit arranged with the casino.

You can also charge gambling money directly to your onboard account like you would charge a drink at a bar or anything else on board. Fees for gambling charges vary among cruise lines, but in most instances, table games charge a service fee, and slot machines do not.

For example, my husband recently requested money from his onboard account at a blackjack table and was charged a 5% surcharge. The ship we were on was not set up to charge onboard accounts directly from the slot machines (sometimes they are), so I had to go to the cashier for a credit slip to play. I was not charged a surcharge, although if I had asked for cash, I would have been. Both of our charges were added to our final onboard bill.

Because there is no fee added to money for slot play, onboard casinos will usually put rules in place about how quickly you can cash out of the machine. The rules are designed to keep cruisers from using slot machines as ATMs to get either cash for the table games or to cash out onboard credit they've been given from the cruise line or their travel agent.

Bottom line

If you like to gamble, cruise ship casinos provide a fun way to spend a sea day or evening on the ship. You can take lessons to learn the games you don't know how to play and even participate in tournaments.

Besides the fun of playing on board, many cruise lines have players clubs that offer onboard perks and even free cruises. And since the odds of winning are about the same as in a U.S. land-based casino, with similar regulations in place, cruise ship casinos are a safe bet for fun and entertainment — though we always encourage you to play responsibly.

Cruise Review: Genting Dream Cruise Trip (Jan 2018) – Weekend Cruise

*This is a very long post, scroll to the bottom if you just want the TL;DR.*

dream cruise casino minimum bet

My parents and I went on a 3D2N cruise in January 2018 on board the Genting Dream Cruise when it called to port in Singapore this year.

We booked our cruise back in December 2017 when we already had news of them coming. Mum and Dad were pretty excited since this is a new cruise in extension to the Genting family of cruises.

Interestingly, Genting Dream Cruise is under their subsidiary company called Dream Cruises, not Star Cruises — which was a common misconception since they both carry the Genting flag.

Cruise Check-in

The cruise ship docked at Marina Bay Cruise Centre and it is also our first-time experiencing cruise travel via this new cruise centre. The check-in was pretty simple, loads of automated self-help machines (with staff to help) and two manual counters where the staff would tag your passport with your cruise card number as well as issuing a boarding pass. Overall, there wasn’t much a queue cause the process only needed one representative.

We were then filtered into groups for immigration checks and boarding and somewhat like how they board passengers to the plane, we waited for our turn to be called for boarding after we had our carry-ons security screened.

The immigration customs process was pretty smooth since we all had biometric passports, so we cross-through automated machines again.

Our Balcony Stateroom – Room 9268

We already had our rooms pre-allocated at the time when we booked and paid online, so once we boarded the cruise, we headed straight to our room number.

I had chosen a balcony stateroom for our cruise trip. Honestly, the entire cruise was mostly balcony staterooms, with a miserable number of interior staterooms. Since we decided to all share one stateroom, mum had agreed that we pay a little bit more to enjoy the balcony.

It suited my dad too, as it was convenient for him to take his smoking break out on the balcony without having to try to find a smoking area on board the cruise somewhere else.

dream cruise casino minimum bet

The stateroom was already set-up for the three of us, me taking the converted sofabed while my parents had the comfy bed.

The room was pretty spacious, hot water kettle, complimentary hot drinks sachets and a daily refresh of 2 bottled water were offered inside the room.

My aunt was curious how big the bathroom was, so I got my mum to sit on the toilet to make a reference. The bathroom was pretty spacious, and there were complimentary toiletries and amenities available in the bathroom.

In the closet, they even pretty comfortable bedroom slippers for our use! I love it when a hotel offers complimentary bedroom slippers.

Including in our cruise fare, we were offered 3 meals a day, with a choice of dining at either:

  • Lido Buffet,
  • Function 8 Room Buffet,
  • Dream Dining Room Upper or
  • Dream Dining Room Lower.

The other dining establishments within the cruise ship would be on our own personal expense should we prefer to dine exclusively.

Overall, we preferred the quality of the food served in both upper and lower dining rooms. The dining experience in both dining rooms was much better than the buffet since both were more of a sit-down service compared to a buffet line. There are no formal dinner nights on this cruise, which was quite a downer but then again, every cruise ship is different.

*tip* The dining rooms will get crowded during peak meal times, so go early when there is less queue.

Lido Buffet

Located on Deck 16 AFT (Aft meant the back side of the ship, FORWARD meant the front of the ship) it serves the standard buffet fare for all the passengers. This was the first place I brought my parents to for the first dinner of the entire trip — just because I had prior experience with Royal Carribean’s Liberty of the Seas and their buffet was amazing! — and also because my friend who already made a trip to Dream Cruise prior to us said that Lido Buffet was his best choice out of the four.

Unfortunately, the quality of the buffet was way below my expectation.

I thought maybe because I already had an amazing cruise experience to the Carribean, I had a higher benchmark than my parents, but my parents felt it wasn’t impressive too.

One thing we noticed (after we had better experiences in the other dining options — which I will share after this) — is that the cruise has made a better effort to cater to their Indian passengers — tour groups which probably had some deals made with the cruise ship where these tourists would take a weekend trip on a cruise while holidaying in Singapore.

Half the buffet line was Indian food — much to my disappointment actually.

dream cruise casino minimum bet

Function 8 Buffet

Function 8 serves the same buffet offers as Lido Buffet – sans the Indian food fare. It was a very small enclosed dining room, much akin to have breakfast as business hotels or serviced residences. Not much of the difference compared to Lido Buffet. If I were to choose between Function 8 and Lido — definitely Lido, because of the fantastic view of the sea.

Dream Dining Room Lower

I must say, don’t be fool by that short, limited menu — while we did not dine at the Dream Dining Room Lower during lunch or dinner, we did have breakfast there on the last morning of our trip, and it turns out to be the best decision ever!

While there was a short buffet available – the usuals, the cold cuts, the cereals, the traditional English fare, there was also soya milk, Chinese fare, some dim sum. What I love most was the made-to-order eggs menu . You can choose from omelette with a selection of toppings, scrambled eggs, sunny side up to minute boiled eggs that came sitting on a mini egg cup — all served to you at your table by the waiters.

While the selection was fairly limited, the quality was better than those served in Lido Buffet. We had our breakfast at Lido on the second day, and we felt that the Dream Dining Room Lower had better quality and atmosphere to have a meal. Besides being located on Deck 7 FORWARD, you get to have a glimpse of the helipad and the bow of the cruise ship from the windows, which was pretty amazing too.

dream cruise casino minimum bet

Dream Dining Room Upper

After a disappointing dinner on the first day and breakfast on the second day at Lido Buffet, Mum decided that we should just ignore what my friend mentioned — saying that the Dining Room wasn’t worth it —  that we should try them ourselves to determine its worth.

We had lunch and dinner at Dream Dining Room Upper, which is located one floor above the lower dining room on Deck 8 FORWARD. We were definitely not disappointed . It was like regular Chinese restaurant fare; and since both my parents preferred Chinese food, the menu at Dream Dining Room Upper was much suited for their taste buds. I enjoyed dining here too!

dream cruise casino minimum bet

Portion sizing

The portion you are looking at serves 3. In fact, if you were there alone or with a partner, the portion of some items — like the soup etc, looks probably the same size. We had tried to compare to another table across the room where there was only a couple at a table, and we conclude that the dining room does serve enough, or sometimes more than what you can normally finish.

Dinner Menu (Top Left to Bottom Right)

Appertiser Deep Fried Chicken Wing with spicy sauce

Soup Double Boiled Fish Bone Soup with Premium Dried Seafood

Main Course Steamed Seasonal Fish Glazed with Porcini Mushroom Braised Pork Trotter with mushroom and peanut Poached Fresh Prawns in Cheese Wine Herb Broth Braised Eggplant with Gui Hua Shen in Yu Xiang Sauce Sauteed Green Vegetable with garlic and brown mushroom

Dessert Sweet Creamy Red Bean with Lotus Seed

We managed to have some tender mini abalone in the double boiled fish bone soup they serve! The fish soup was good, the broth was flavourful. It wasn’t too hot to taste, it was a pretty enjoyable appetizer.

The steamed seasonal fish was fresh and mum mentioned it was codfish — which meant the fish wasn’t the cheap kind~ Mum and I love fish so this was delicious to us. The sauce complemented the fish very well and it was very good on a bowl of rice!!!

The braised pork trotter was easily dad’s favourite. Soft and tender, the pork trotter slides off the bone easily and coupled with the mushroom and peanut sauce, flavourful and yummy! Again the sauce was good with rice. I love the sauce too!

Prawns are not really our favourite because we always try to avoid high-cholesterol food. However, we did taste a couple of prawns — we also not in favour of wasting food, and mum mentioned that the prawns are fresh and the broth was well really infused into the prawns.

Eggplant is always a favourite for our family and this dish hits home with its soft and mushy eggplant totally absorbing the spicy flavours.

A traditional red bean dessert was served and while we were afraid it was too sweet, it wasn’t. Thus, it was a pretty good finish for our dinner although we were already so full of all the dishes being served before this!!!

Other Dining Options – The Blue Lagoon

We did not really try out other exclusive dining restaurants, such as Hotpot, Japanese or Bistro, that were available on board. Although so, my friend did mention a place that serves food at a very low price of $2 daily from 11pm to 2am!

Located on Deck 7, the cafe was decorated with an ancient period setting, allow you to feel like you travelled back in time (or maybe not.).

We did not manage to try out the food at the Blue Lagoon since we were all stuffed, but you can try grabbing a bite at midnight if you are a bit peckish without hurting your wallet!

dream cruise casino minimum bet

Entertainment

Besides the casino (which I will cover further below), I felt that the Entertainment options on board were pretty limited. It might have also been because that the weekend I was there it rained two days straight , so the outdoor areas were pretty much wet and closed – so I did not get to enjoy those facilities too. Also, I am not a clubbing/alcohol person — so Zouk was not for me too.

Here are some shots of the few places I mentioned above before I continue talking about what I actually did on board the cruise!!

Outdoor water park and pool area

The Voyage of a Lover’s Dream

Touted as a show put together by an award-winning entertainment team, it supposed to be a show that tells “a mysterious story with a mermaid and an astronaut through the main character named ‘Little Chili’ who would help you discover that the universe is full of possibilities and dreams.”

However, I felt that it was a ‘Cirque de Soleil’ show without the  ‘Soleil’. The individual circus acts and dance numbers were good, but the story failed to tie together the story together as a whole. Nevertheless, their individual acts are still entertaining to watch!

Curtain call

Bridge Tour

I also signed up for the Bridge Tour! However, this was not a free activity. This tour cost SGD22 per person, and it was credited to my room card.

Hey, SGD22 to meet those handsome first officers, not too bad really; not too bad. LOLz~

Our tour guide brought us to the control room where they showed us where all the cameras are and the sensors that control the fire alarm and water gates of the ship, then we went on to the bridge where actual officers were on duty steering the cruise ship.

I even got to sit in the captain’s chair!

View from the Captain’s seat!

Shopping options are very limited, with just one single circular arena of duty-free shops. The selection isn’t much, but some of the deals during their time-sensitive sale are fairly decent. I didn’t see anything that caught my eye, except for an unknown brand watch with interchangeable belts at SGD29.90.

dream cruise casino minimum bet

There was also a limitation on souvenirs, major items are not really attractive (tiger balms to noodles??). The only iconic item was the mermaid tail blanket — which again isn’t something I would be interested in.

I would have hoped they would develop more items with the mermaid theme — things that would entice me to open my wallet and make some huge purchases. Things like holographic pouches with mermaid tails and seashells would be my number pick if they had developed some.

The Casino area is scattered everywhere and you will definitely walk by them everytime you want to get to the other side of the ship. If you love to play some slot games or try your luck at those green velvet tables, they are very accessible from all corners of the cruise ship.

Transit from shopping to gaming

The gaming area is spread across three levels surrounded by a circular stage and bar on the 1st level, where there is always music and performance on the stage.

dream cruise casino minimum bet

Slot machines range from $0.10 onwards, but per bet on table games begins at $50.

Genting Membership

Also, bring along your Genting membership card so you can apply a Genting at Sea card (This Genting at Sea card works for cruise ships only). If you are wondering if you can you accrue Genting points on board, well, you can only accrue to the Sea card, and not the RWGenting card.

Wifi on board is NOT FREE. You have to pay for it.

Image reference from Dream Cruise FAQ

I bought WiFi on board because the in-room TV only had China channels and I was getting bored. However, I found out even the WiFi has some limitations on it. 1. Server resides in HongKong. 2. WiFi speeds are slow 3. Can’t exactly post images on Instagram, the app does not recognise your account and posting — I have my suspicions that it was because the server was in HongKong, and since HongKong is part of China — internet restrictions may be in place.

In the end, I only used Whatsapp to chat with friends back home and also connect to Facebook for my Candy Crush score. It was totally not worth the $38. I was tempted to purchase the higher tier Wifi, but after the disappointing experience, I decided against it.

Genting Dream App

My friend told me about the app and the convenience of using the in-app chat inbox to contact your roommates or friends in another room anywhere on the cruise ship.

Recommend that you download the app from App store or Google Play before you embark on the trip so you can save the hassle and start using the app.

You won’t be able to access the app before you board, or after you disembark; the app only works with the wifi onboard.

From the main screen (centre image above), you can access the chat screen from the “My Inbox” tab, and all you need to do is to just input the cabin number and message, and there you go. The only downside is that the inbox does not give you any notification on your mobile, so in order to know what messages your mates left you, you need to constantly check the inbox.

Besides the chat screen, you can access the Dream Daily on the go. Dream Daily is a daily summary or the day’s activities and all the important information you need to know while you cruise. The next day’s Daily will be placed in the stateroom at the end of the day when they turn down your room, or when they clean the stateroom for the day.

Besides using the hard-copy Daily guide, all the activities and show times can also be found within the app itself. I found that the only downside again for this app is that I could not book the shows and activity via the app, and I have to make my way down to the registration counters at the front desk to do so, which only leaves the app to be more of an info guide than being able to do more.

The features I like in the app are the nautical information map that tracks the current position of the cruise ship. It was quite accurate compared to Google Maps, and I found that without purchasing a wifi package — this nautical information map is quite interesting to look and track.

The app also features a location guide of the facilities, so that you have a map of the decks right in your hand rather than having to figure out the directions while you are out and about.

Dream Elite Member Perk

If you have signed up as a Dream Elite member as at when you purchase your cruise package, you will find a freebie you can redeem via the app. Not many people will know of this, but it is a fun and free souvenir one can get from the cruise vacation.

Members can choose between a souvenir photo taken of them by their photographer or a number padlock. I chose the number padlock instead!

dream cruise casino minimum bet

The total cost for the three of us came up to a total of around SGD$1950

Cost breakdown: Cabin Fare: $1647.50 Port Charges: $120.00 Credit Card Discount: – $100 Gratitudes/ Tips: $120.00 WiFi: $19 per night -> $38.00 Bridge Tour: $21.00 Shopping: $101.00 Total: SGD$1945.50

If you are a regular patron of Genting Highlands and you want something different in terms of location for gambling, you can try out the ship. My dad who enjoys an occasional trip to Genting Highlands did not really enjoy because of the high entry point for table games.

As for non-gamblers like me, if you want to fully enjoy this cruise ship, it’s best to pick a period when the weather is good. Since the period we went was still the rainy period, I can’t fully enjoy or even review the fun entertainment they had advertised about.

Taking in overall, it’s a nice ship to just go for once to try it out , but for me, unless they improve the shopping, entertainment options and the smoking situation — since the casino is so open and smacked in the centre, I probably won’t be interested to take a second trip on board again .

TL;DR: Overall expensive, not exactly worth it. Can try once, but don’t go during rainy seasons. Casino table games minimum $50, not much shopping.

Off to the next adventure!

I never really thought about going to a cruise before, it looks beautiful though. May need to add it to my want to do list.

This is such a great reveiw of Genting cruise. The bedroom is quite spacious as compared to the one I went many years ago. I can’t remember the name of the cruise, departing from Singapore to nowhere – Cruise to nowhere. The show in your cruise look pretty interesting and thanks for the pictures you have shared, it gives me some ideas of what the cruise provide.

Whoa that’s a huge trip. I am happy to hear about your cruise and this cruise line. I love going on cruises. The rooms look lovely anc comfy. I would live at the buffet. The food looks so yummy, Sounds like a great time to me.

I was about to call it steep then I looked back and saw that everything seems to be worth it despite the food selections. I think you’ve pretty much covered what this cruise has to offer, from the menus to the entertainment parts. The room you stayed at looks simple and comfortable for a two-day relaxation.

Aww I loved this post! I think its lovely that you went with your parents, I go on holiday with mine too and I really enjoy time with them. The ship itself looks really good – beautiful inside and out but its a shame you had a rough experience with the food.

This is a very honest take on your experience, which I completely appreciate. My experience of cruises have all been pretty positive, but then again, I haven’t had that many to compare against. I appreciate knowing ahead of time if it’s worth the cost and what to choose as far as all the options. I would be very curious to try the Genting Dream Cruise at least once. Thanks for the detailed review!

It looks like a really luxurious cruise ship you stayed on. Your pictures are wonderful and it really looks like you had such a great time.

The pictures look amazing, but I understand you couldn’t fully enjoy this experience because the entertainment and shopping weren’t great. That makes me think that if I every book a cruise I need to be sure of choosing the right season!!

I have never been on a cruise but I would like to … I appreciate the detailed review and the cost breakdown of your trip. That is really helpful.

I can totally visualize Tiffany getting frustrated with the bad and paid WiFi. For me, I think I would take that as a digital detox and go offline for some time, training and have some fun making videos!

Oh, the food! I was just wishing I could reach out and grab some. It does sound like a lot of fun. thanks for amazing review.

I love cruising and will have to check out this route and line.

We’re a party of twelve so-called DreamElite Members on Dream Cruises tour. The manufactured dream by Dream Cruise nicely printed on the brochure alluring and beckoning an experience you will never forget turns out to be a nightmare from the moment at check- in to check-out.

The promise of a personal butler and 24 hours concierge existed only in a dream. Never once we hear nor see the so-called two fellows. We were left to fan for ourselves in all the necessities by asking around. There were plenty of international staffs with smithereens of English employed to stand around only to confuse. The number of staff does not even equate with efficiency let alone expectation of a satisfactory service.

What an experience! Never again would l put myself through this chaotic and nightmarish cruise.

Hi Henry, Thanks for sharing your experiences. I can totally feel your pain when you paid so much but the experience is so little. Do share your feedback with the company, so they may do some improvements themselves, which I usually will feedback and we can only hope they do better in the future. Have you tried other cruises yet?? I love Royal Carribean cruises when I wenton board in the States but have yet to try any departing from Singapore.

You only get a butler if you book the suites. I suppose you booked the normal stateroom.

Hi Pingerrain, appreciate so much for your post. And I had at least have a brief idea of this cruise. I am planning for a 3 days 2night cruise with my parents , sail to KL. But not sure is this a right choice for me or I should still choose royal carribean. The promotion which is around 300++ plus per person. Sail from 9pm on the first day, then 2nd day whole day on cruise, third day 11am reach sg. Do you think is a right choice for me ? thanks .

Hi Evon, It will depend what you are looking for in your cruise vacation, and what do your parents want?

However, honestly, my dad who also loves casino games didn’t enjoy playing on board. He commented that Star Cruises are much better, as the currency used on board Star Cruises is Ringgit and their selection of games are much diverse.

Royal Caribbean Cruises have a balance of entertainment, games and other family friendly activities. However, if I recalled correctly, the currency they use on board is USD. I’m not sure about the RC cruises disembarking Singapore, because I do know they will change when these cruises visit different port of calls.

Also, I haven’t been on Star Cruises, so I cannot compare them altogether based on experience, but my parents definitely preferred Star than Dream.

If you decide on Dream Cruises, you might want to look out for the promo where the second person is $1 or there is a super low promo for senior citizens. Honestly, only take them there if the sole purpose is gambling, cause I think that is the biggest so-called entertainment on board. Then again, my dad said he preferred Genting Highlands than Dream cruise.

Otherwise, I think Star Cruise (based on my dad’s comment) and Royal Caribbean cruises will be a much better choice. More variety of activities, not just gambling only.

Hope this helps!

My parents they don’t gamble, they just want to try the cruise experience. Their focus are on the comfortability of the room and also the food. Any activities you play on the cruise? I plan to go for the bridge tour, cause is like quite an eyes opening experience. For the food, which one will you recommend ? The chinese one and the blue lagoon? I plan to have a 3D2N to KL. Yours are also 3D2N right ? sorry yours are sail to ? Now the promotion is like 300++ per person can get a balcony room.

Thank you so much for your sharing.

Hi Evon, If your parents don’t gamble, then don’t go for Genting Dream.

Shows are much limited, with two major shows: China Talent Show and the Dream Voyage show I mentioned in my blog. The room is definitely comfortable. Food wise, unless you are willing to spend extra to pay for the other food options that is available on board (steam boat, Japanese food or Western) then you can pretty much choose and try out the different dining rooms and Function 8 to see for yourself.

Mine was a cruise to nowhere and besides meal time, I was spending most of my time just walking around the different decks (exploring what else I can do and taking pictures for the blog) and there is nothing much else for me to do. Some decks reek of cigarette smoke so it was pretty unpleasant for me. On top of that, I couldn’t even swim cause it was raining.

As for the promotion — it’s really just an advertising gimmick. Because about 95% of the staterooms on board Genting Dream are balcony rooms! They do not have exterior staterooms (the room with a round porthole window); and they only have a handful of interior stateroom. I think it’s harder to book an interior stateroom than a balcony!

So if you actually compare the deck maps of Genting Dream vs Royal Caribbean (which I did), you will realise that balcony staterooms are Dream cruise most basic and common tier rooms. So, pretty much $300+ you are paying the same for an interior stateroom on RC. Basic vs Basic.

The only perk is really the balcony which I also spend a lot time on, reading on the balcony and enjoying the cool monsoon winds.

If you want to bring your parents for a real cruise experience, take them on RC. RC have captain’s night, formal dining, dance nights and lots of entertainment option. They even have parades within the promenade if you are travelling on the cruise that feature Dreamworks characters. Shopping wise are much more fun, and there are more space to move about plus my favourite — the promenade cafe that serves free drinks and snacks 24 hours a day. They can also dress up formally and enjoy a sit down formal dinner like the rich and wealthy, which was quite an interesting experience!

I know I didn’t blog much about my trip on Royal Caribbean — partially cause I was seasick during that cruise (I was the one without fear of seasickness among my friends but I was the only one with seasickness! SO unfair!) so I spent most of my time in bed and jealous over the photos of my friends having fun.

For bridge tours, I am sure all cruises have that option — you just need to ask the concierge on the availability. Also, do note that I took RC in USA, I haven’t tried one leaving from Singapore. You can check with RC on the experiences I mentioned, every RC cruise have a different offer.

Honestly, RC cruise still tops the cruise experience for me and I highly recommend it.

P.S. I went to research the pricing for Voyager of the Seas, Royal Caribbean cruise. They do have similar pricing to Genting Dream for balcony. 3 night Penang cruise, sail date may not be near, 1-4 march 2019, but it’s average $375 per person. (Haha, I may book this too!) 3 night M’sia getaway cruise, 15 – 18 Oct 2018, average $360 per person. I also made a call to the RC service line — just for your sake — and also found out that the RC package online includes port tax and tips! — no need to pay extra like I had to on Genting Dream.

Good luck on making a decision! Let me know which cruise you are intending to choose!

Thank you for your comprehensive review. However you may have gotten some details wrong. I am quite amused when reading that you could catch a glimpse of the helipad at the dream dining room. The dream dining rooms are actually located at the back (aft) of the ship and the membership program is called Resorts World at Sea not Genting at Sea. Besides these, well done!

Hi Anne, Thanks for your comment! Yeah I went to review my photos and I realized I mistook the similar looking outdoor deck as the helipad, thus I thought it was the front!!! Thanks for the tip, will go change them!

Hi Pingerrain ! Thanks so much for the blog ! 😀

I’m boarding my ship this weekend, and i’m really interested in doing the bridge tour. Is it really cost 22 SGD for the tour ? cause I tried to pre-book the tour via DreamElite website, and the cost was 35 SGD 🙁

Hi Vincentius, Sorry for the late response. They may have risen the price since the last time I went. Hope you had a pleasant cruise!

hi, thankyou so much for sharing! i just wanted to ask, are the casinos really open for public? I mean, mostly for casino when we want to go inside, we have to show your pasport or at least well-dressed. but for Genting Dream Cruise is it unessessary??

Nope, the casino is very open. There are rooms for high-rollers and high-players that are enclosed. Otherwise, it is free-range, really.

Can we check in and board the Cruise before the stipulated time that is indicated on the ticket?

Hi TNS, Sorry for the delay response. I was away for travelling. No, I doubt so. We were early too, and we got our passports checked-in and everything but the boarding time was exactly what they set to be. We had to wait in groups (as per timing) to board the cruise.

Genting Dream Cruise to Nowhere Review – Part 4: Activities and Shows

There’s one similarity that I notice in every cruise trips that I’ve been on: there are too many activities on a cruise and you simply can’t do everything. If you want to experience as much activities as possible, you need to plan your itinerary properly, otherwise, you might missed out on certain activities.

But you can’t plan the itinerary before you’re on board, because cruises only distribute the daily schedule when you’re on board. So, what you can do before boarding is to determine what kind of activities you want to take part in. When you’re on board, you can plan the sequence of the activities.

In this article, I’ll try to share as much info as I have regarding activities on the World Dream Cruise to Nowhere. Hopefully by the end of this article, you’ll know what you want to take part in.

Genting Dream Cruise to Nowhere (2021) Series Part 1: Reservation, ART Test, Boarding Part 2: Balcony Stateroom Part 3: All Inclusive Dining Part 4: Activities and Shows Part 5: Tips for FOMO Travelers

PS: During my visit in 2021, the ship was called World Dream . However, they changed name to Resort World Cruise in 2022. Just want you to know that they’re interchangeable =)

What are the activities in World Dream?

What are the shows in world dream and how to book them, tips on booking activities and shows.

Some activities and shows require advance booking, while others are based on first come first served basis (which means you need to queue before the activities/show start).

The most popular activities that always get fully booked are jacuzzi, swimming pool, mini golf, table tennis and shows. To ensure you get a slot in jacuzzi, pool, golf and table tennis, do turn up at the respective booking counters early in the morning, after your breakfast.

Getting a jacuzzi slot is extremely difficult. If you don’t get a jacuzzi slot, you can bet on your luck by booking a pool slot, then if the person using jacuzzi is done for the day, you can jump in. Alternatively, you can pay for Crystal Life Spa access (SGD 20) to enjoy steam room, sauna and hot bath which is almost similar to jacuzzi except that it’s indoor.

Booking for free shows can be done via Dream App. The slots are not released all at once, instead, limited slots are released every hour, making it quite difficult to snatch a slot if you do not have fast fingers. If you don’t get a slot via the Dream App but you’re very keen to watch the show, here’s a secret: queue at the studio 15-20 mins before the show; if there are guests that don’t turn up when the show starts, they’ll let you in.

If you hate the idea of having to make booking for most of the activities, then you can probably consider booking Palace Suite or above, because Palace customers can book activities via a special lane, they don’t have to queue at reservation counter or constantly checking the Dream App to register for activities.

Non-Palace customers like us can swim at the Main Pool (Deck 16 MID). Reservation must be made in advance at the towel counter beside the main pool. Each reservation is valid for 1 hour only. Towel is provided for free. However, there’s no locker, so you need to put your stuffs on the sun lounge. We decided not to bring our phones to prevent them being stolen. But we still need to bring room key and tracey token with us at all times.

To be honest, I feel that the pool is quite small (and not clean). Once is definitely enough. For us, we couldn’t get a jacuzzi slot because it’s fully booked when we wanted to book it. So what we did was book the pool slot and bet our luck that people who booked jacuzzi during the same timeslot as us would finish their dip in less than 1 hour, and we could use the jacuzzi when they’re done. Our bet paid off.

World Dream Cruise to Nowhere Review - Activities - Main pool

There are 4 jacuzzi surrounding the main pool (Deck 16 MID), and there are 2 jacuzzi at Zouk Beach Club (Deck 17 AFT). Jacuzzi is a very popular activities that always get fully booked early. It is a hot water jacuzzi so it’s best enjoyed in the morning or late afternoon or evening. Some of the jacuzzi are sheltered and some are not, so it really depends on your luck which one you’ll get.

If you manage to snatch a slot, you’ll have the jacuzzi for yourselves and no other groups are allowed to join in your jacuzzi during this corona period. That explains why jacuzzi has a very high demand.

Waterslides

There are 2 clusters of waterslides, let’s call it the kid’s slide and adult’s slides.

The kid’s slide is the orange color slide, and it’s located at Deck 16 MID, just beside the main pool. Beside kid’s slides, there is also a children pool.

The adult’s slides are located at Deck 17 AFT, and it’s called Waterslide Park. There are 5 slides with different difficulties, starting from the easiest at No 1, to the scariest at No 5. It’s recommended that you take the slides in ascending order, starting from No 1 and ending at No 5.

Personally I only took No 1, 2 and 3. I did not dare to take No 4 and 5 because both of them are very steep. No 5 even had a small stretch in the beginning where you’ll experience almost free fall. To be honest, I feel pain at my back from the friction with the slide’s joints, I’m not sure if it’s normal but it definitely discouraged me from going on unlimited slides.

I highly recommend that you try these slides. No reservation is required, just wear your swimsuit and climb the staircase from Deck 16 to Deck 17. When you’re halfway at the stairs, there is a rack for you to hang your mask, watch, glass, and whatever accessories that aren’t allowed on the slides. Since we need to bring key room and tracey token with you all the time, we just put them on sun lounge by the main pool. There’s no other way, there’s no locker for slides users.

Rope Course & Zipline

This is the most challenging as well as the most rewarding activity I’ve done throughout this cruise trip. Rope Course is located at Deck 18 AFT. No reservation is required but you need to join the long queue. From my observation, it is least crowded after 4pm. Of course don’t wait until 4pm on your last evening, because it might rain! You need to wear your own shoes for this activity. There is a small locker for you to keep your room key, token, and accessories, no fee is required for usage of this locker.

There are 2 tiers in this rope course, one is closer to the ground (let’s call it the lower one), one is above the lower one (let’s call it the higher one). No queue/harness system is required for the lower one, and it’s less fun. I skipped the lower one and went straight to the higher one. And, yes, you need to wear mask throughout the entire course!

World Dream Cruise to Nowhere Review - Activities - Rope Course (1)

At the start of the course, we were briefed by the crew on how to lock and unlock the harness hook. Then, we’re off on our own. There are plenty of combination of routes you can take, but most people take the outer edge route. If the inner route (diagonal route) looks easier for you, then you should go for it. For me, I took the outer route.

The rope course is HARD! I am scared of height, and having to balance my body on a shaky rope platform at height terrifies me, but I’m willing to fight through the terror just to get to zipline starting point. You can’t go straight to zipline starting point, you MUST go through the rope course.

World Dream Cruise /to Nowhere Review - Activities - Rope Course

I thought the shaky platform was the worst part of this entire course, but I was wrong. At the end of shaky platform, before the zipline, there is a rope wall that we have to scale horizontally! The ropes are not tensed, so you need to exert a lot of strength to support your body. Furthermore, there is no belay system! You’re just relying on your own arm and leg strength. And to make it worse, it’s not a flat rope wall, there is a solid steel plate in the middle of the wall which you need to climb over to get to the other side! Who’s the genius that designed this course??

World Dream Cruise /to Nowhere Review - Activities - Rope Course

If your arms and legs are not strong enough and you let go of the rope, you’ll be hanging in the air and people behind you will be stuck because they can’t overtake you. So much pressure was building up inside of me. I told the zipline staff (who’s standing at the other end of the rope wall) that I’m very scared and I don’t think I could do it. He told me not to worry and he would help me. I made the leap of faith to scale the wall and he climbed the rope wall towards me and grabbed my harness over the big steel plate.

In a few minutes, I’m over the freaky rope course, phew! And then, I’m on the zipline, woohoo! I highly recommend this activity to be in your itinerary!

Rock Climbing Wall

The rock climbing wall is located at Deck 18 AFT, just next to Rope Course. No reservation is required. They provide special rock climbing shoes but you need your own socks. There is a place for you to put belongings while you’re climbing the wall, so you don’t need to leave your belonging on the sun lounge while queueing.

There are 4 belay systems, but it doesn’t mean that 4 people will get to climb at the same time. When we queued, only 1 person was allowed to climb at one time (not sure why they didn’t open the entire 4 lines). Because of this, the waiting was incredibly long. When we started queueing, there were less than 10 people in front of us. After q-ing for 1 hour, it’s still not our turn yet, and suddenly rain came. So the activity was stopped for the day, and we wasted 1 hour for nothing.

If you’re not a hard core rock climber, I think queueing for this activity is not worth your time, especially if only 1 person is allowed to climb at one time.

World Dream Cruise to Nowhere Review - Activities - Rock Climbing Wall

Mini Golf is an activity that falls in the “low supply, high demand” camp. There is basically just 1 mini golf course in the entire cruise, and only 1 group is allowed to play at any time. So, obviously it’s hard to get a slot if you try to book it not on the first day.

Reservation can be done at the counter near rope course & rock climbing. We didn’t get a slot when we tried to book on the second day. We didn’t know there’s a golf course, so we didn’t register early. If you’re keen, do book early.

World Dream Cruise to Nowhere Review - Activities - Mini Golf

Table Tennis

Table tennis is located at Deck 18 AFT near rope course and rock climbing. Booking can be done at the counter near rope course.

Table tennis falls in the “high supply, high demand” camp. There are several tables and each reservation slot is limited to 30 mins only. So, it’s quite easy to get a slot for table tennis. Rest assured, rackets and balls are provided. We tried to book a slot on Day 2, and the earliest slot available was Day 3, so we took it.

Basketball/Volleyball

To play basketball/volleyball, you need to make reservation for SportsPlex. SportsPlex is located at Deck 19 AFT and reservation can be done at Deck 18 AFT. Ball sports are not my forte, so we didn’t venture into SportsPlex. From my observation, the sportsplex is always occupied, so you probably need to make a booking early to get a reservation slot.

World Dream Cruise to Nowhere Review - Activities - sportsplex

The gym is called Crystal Life Fitness. It is located at Deck 15 FWD. Reservation is necessary and can be done at Crystal Life Spa (also Deck 15 FWD) or via phone. Each reservation is limited to 1.5 hours of usage.

The gym has spectacular view of the ocean. If you’re a jogger or runner, the gym is definitely a better place to run compared to the outdoor jogging track which is too short and too crowded.

Bridge Viewing Room

We stumbled upon Bridge Viewing Room by accident. We finished our dinner and decided to wander around the ship, then we walked into this room with a model of the ship.

On a normal day, if you visit this room, you can see what’s inside the Captain’s room. However, when we visited at night on Day 1, and the curtain between this room and Captain’s room was rolled down, hence we couldn’t see the room.

World Dream Cruise to Nowhere Review - Activities - Bridge Viewing Deck (1)

It isn’t a Dream Cruise if there is no mention of casino, right? While casinos on mainland Singapore charges SGD 150 for citizens and permanent residents, the casino on the cruise is free to enter, so that probably explains why casino on Dream Cruise is a huge hit. During my trip, the casino is open around 45 mins after departure and close around 1.5 hour before arrival at Singapore.

The main part of casino is located at Deck 6, 7 and 8, which consists of the usual slot machines, card games, table games as well as arcade-like games such as coin dozers. I don’t know how to play card or table games, so I spent a few dollars playing coin dozer, and sadly, I didn’t make money from it.

Everyday, there are Bingo games held at Deck 6 MID. The grand prize for Bingo increases everyday, so if you want to win the highest amount of prize, the best time to play is at the last game. The game is pretty fast-paced, the host mentions so many numbers in a short span of time, so you need to have sharp ears, fast eyes and fast fingers.

I’m not a gambler, I will only take risk when I know the result is purely based on luck & skill, and result is not easily fabricated by the house. After watching the Bingo games, I noticed that the numbers are generated by computer, not by a physical machine that draws randomly-numbered balls. There is a small chance that the numbers being called is not random, so I decided not to partake in the game even though the reward is very attractive. The reward for the final game is SGD 62,888, and nobody won this prize.

Virtual Reality is located at Esc EXPERIENCE LAB. You can get free VR tickets if you purchase Dream Boys show. I didn’t tried any VR games, probably because I was too focused on water activities, rope course, food and shows. It is something I’d really like to try in the future if I’m going on a cruise again. The price is not cheap, but I think it’s worth trying at least once, since I’ve never tried a VR before.

Shows at Zodiac Theatre

During my time, the main shows at Zodiac Theatre were Vision (magic show), Faith (music/dance show) and Twice as Nice (music show), and Tribute to Teresa Teng. Booking must be done via Dream App.

We managed to watch Vision, Faith and Twice as Nice. But we didn’t manage to watch Teresa Teng because there was always empty slot in the Dream app, and we turned up at the theatre too late, there was no more empty seats.

I feel that there is sort of discrimination for non-Palace customers because we don’t get to sit at the center-front section of the theatre. The center section is reserved for Palace customers. I guess that’s a way to lure you to book Palace rooms for your next cruise.

World Dream Cruise to Nowhere Review - Shows at Zodiac Theatre

Before the show, the staffs would sell lucky draw coupons in the theatre. I didn’t buy because they were not cheap and I am just a risk-adverse person. But I could tell that these coupons were quite a hot commodity.

The first show that we watched was Vision. I quite enjoy this magic show, I think the way Vincent engage the audience is sometimes hilarious.

World Dream Cruise to Nowhere Review - Shows - Vision

The second show that we watched was Faith. Because the show time was quite late at night (10pm+), I was worn out by the time I sank into the seat. I couldn’t enjoy the show probably due to my exhaustion.

The third show that we watched was Twice as Nice. It’s a music performance by a couple from America, who can sing in various languages. They did a good job by singing familiar tunes and even a Chinese song.

World Dream Cruise to Nowhere Review - Shows - Twice as Nice

Live Music at Sea

Live Music at Sea is basically small-scale music performance conducted at Tributes (Deck 8) or Palm Court (Deck 19). The schedule can be found in the Dream Daily. No reservation is allowed, keen cruise-goers must queue in front of the venue before the performance starts.

We didn’t manage to watch these performance because we either arrived at the venue too late (it was already full and we weren’t allowed to enter), or we were too exhausted and decided not to watch them. The shows are mostly conducted at night, when our batteries are almost flat. If you’re a night owl, you’ll definitely enjoy live music performance at night.

Cinema at Sea

During the cruise, several movies are played at Lobby (Deck 6 MID) and Zouk Beach Club (Deck 17 AFT). Schedule and venue can be found in Dream Daily. No reservation is required. We didn’t watch them because it’s just not something we’re interested to do. Furthermore, it’s an open cinema, not enclosed, so it doesn’t give the same vibe as the real cinema.

World Dream Cruise to Nowhere Review - Activities - Cinema at Sea Lobby

Adventure Laser Display

On the last day, there are laser displays at the main pool deck. They’re short performances, about 5-minute long, at 10pm, 10.30pm and 11pm. Unfortunately I was too exhausted to watch these. Luckily, I can watch it on YouTube, thanks to people who uploaded their videos of this laser show.

Dream Boys is a very popular show featuring hot boys, as the title suggests. Ticket is required to watch the show, and it is not cheap! During my time, it costs SGD 60 per person, and it comes with 2 free VR tickets. Many people recommends the show, but we couldn’t justify spending SGD 60 per person for a 45-minute show plus 2 VR games, so we didn’t watch it. We just have different priorities.

You can’t do everything on a cruise, you have to pick your priorities. For us, our priorities are water activities, physical activities, watching shows, sipping drinks, and eating food. For you, it might be different.

Do take time to shortlist the activities that you want to do, so you don’t have to scratch your head deciding which activities to book when you’re on board.

Does that mean I will not get to eat anything (inclusive/for free) once I board? *Other than bfast/lunch/dinner, if I'm feeling peckish and still wanna eat other stuff in between meal times or whenever I want, can I do so? Again, I'm talking about the free/inclusive food & drinks that come with the cruise ticket. *How many power points are there in the balcony stateroom? *If I do not sign up for any beverage package, would I still have access to water, coffee/tea, simple drinks/juices etc? That's all for now! Might have more questions later. Hurhur. Thanks in advance, all!

Complimentary dinner (bento packaging) starts at 5.30pm. * Collect complimentary snacks at The Lido (Lower) Deck 7 during non meal timings or pay for food at Deck 6 Lobby Cafe or Deck 7 Blue Lagoon. * More than enough power points and USB points inside the rooms. You are not allowed to bring extension cord. * You can have complimentary bottle drinking water, warm/hot water, hot lime juice and coffee/tea in the casino even without membership. I WAS THERE THE OTHER DAY

Genting Dream Cruises 2018 [Review]

When my brother and I were young, going on a cruise was almost a yearly event with our parents. I can still vaguely remember eating a lot and hoping to grow up soon so that I can visit the casino too. Boy, growing up was definitely overrated. Many years later, when we saw that Genting Dream Cruises was having a promotion, we decided to go on a short family trip on the cruise.

Travel HANter

Genting Dream Cruises was having lots of promotion. We chose the 2N cruise that departs on a Wednesday and sails to Port Klang and back. For the balcony stateroom, it cost SGD259 each for the first two pax; SGD159.50 each for the third and fourth pax in the same room. The third and fourth pax have to sleep on the sofa bed, which was, in my opinion, a little small for two. We made the booking online through Genting Dream Cruises’ website .

HAN-dy tip: The prices included the port charges, but not the gratuity fee of SGD21/night/pax.

Checking In and Boarding the Genting Dream Cruise

Our check-in time was between 18:25 to 19:00 and the latest check-in time was at 19:30. The Genting Dream Cruise was set to depart from the Marina Bay Cruise Center at 21:00. There was an assisted self-check-in area where there were staffs to help with checking in and getting the room key. Overall, the check-in process was a breeze.

genting dream cruise

Upon boarding, the staffs collected our passports and told us that our room key will serve as our ID if we disembark in Port Klang.

The Genting Dream Cruise

The Genting Dream Cruise was beautifully decorated with many paintings. It was huge and filled with entertainments and restaurants.

genting dream cruise

Charges and Wifi

There was no free Wifi provided onboard (WHY?!) and we had to pay SGD 38 for our two-night cruise. Up to two devices were able to connect at any one time. However, the Wifi was sufficient for only basic internet usage and not really for video streaming. All expenses incurred during the cruise were charged to the room card.

The Balcony Stateroom

The balcony stateroom was the third tier kind of room on Genting Dream Cruises. The room was spacious enough and the bathroom was considered big compared to other cruises I’ve been on. The furnishings were quite new and the bed was really comfy. Basic toiletries, room slippers, a safe and small kettle were provided. As for the balcony, we barely spent time there as we were out of the room most of the time. Also, lots of little insects flew in when we opened the door once.

genting dream cruise

For the price paid, we were entitled to free meals in three of the restaurants:

  • Dream Dining Room Lower for Chinese cuisine at Deck 7
  • Dream Dining Room Upper for Chinese cuisine at Deck 8
  • The Lido for international or Indian cuisine at Deck 16

Each day, there were 5 ( yes, FIVE ) meals served on Genting Dream Cruise:

  • Morning Tea
  • Afternoon Tea

For our first dinner and lunch on board, we dined at the Lido. There was a wide variety of food but personally, I find the halal section which serves an array of seafood the most appetising. They had crabs, prawns, clams and curry fish head. I love prawns!

HAN-dy tip: Since tables are not assigned to individual rooms, it can get really crowded during meal times. For the Lido, there’s no reservation so there can be quite a long queue. However, for the Dream Dining Room, a reservation can be made at the restaurant itself.

genting dream cruise

For our second night’s dinner and last day’s breakfast, we had Chinese ala carte buffet at the Dream Dining Room. The quality of the food was better than that at the Lido.

genting dream cruise

As for the morning and afternoon tea, simple fried finger food, along with some pastries, coffee, and tea were served.

The Entertainment

Resorts world at sea casino.

Admittedly, the number one entertainment for grown-ups has to be the casino. Extending from Deck 6 to 8, there were lots of table games and machines available in the Resorts World at Sea casino. Every now and then, there is even a live performance at the central stage of the casino. Also, there is a bar within the casino at Deck 8 to chill to the live performance. After all, all the adrenaline rush due to the gambling can get a bit taxing.

genting dream cruise

HAN-dy tips: The membership card used at Resorts World at Sea casino is different from those used in other Genting Casinos (on land). One will have to apply for a new membership card at the casino, where there’s always a long queue.

Shore Excursions

Since we docked at Port Klang on the second day, there were options to take various shore excursions to tour Kuala Lumpur to do some sightseeing and shopping. Having visited KL for a few times, we decided to skip the excursion and make full use of the facilities on the cruise. The excursions cost from SGD25 and up. Click here for more information.

Outdoor Playground

During the day when the ship docks, the casino is closed and most of the families with kids spend their time outdoors where there’s plenty of activities under the sun.

genting dream cruise

There’s also table tennis tables, giant Jenga and two Jacuzzis next to the pool. However, we didn’t spend time in the waters as it was always filled with people and kids.

Indoor Playground

For kids and those young at heart, there is an arcade with old-school games but there aren’t many people playing in it.

genting dream cruise

As for adults who want to pamper themselves, there’s also a spa, hair salon and of course, mani-pedicure.

genting dream cruise

Feeling guilty for overindulging, there’s a gym to erase some of the guilt!

genting dream cruise

There are also shows being played at the Zodiac theatre.

genting dream cruise

Fancy singing your heart out? There’s also a karaoke onboard. However, it is more for bigger groups of up to 15 pax.  A room for 2 hours of singing cost about SGD88. Since there were only two of us, we had to keep out hearts in.

genting dream cruise

What we did play was Bingo. For SGD30, we get one Bingo ticket and one free can of drink. Bingo is played twice a day and there was a presale of the tickets prior to the start of the game. For each ticket, we got to play about five games. The prize money ranges from a few hundred to SGD38,888 for the jackpot prize. It was good fun even though we did not win anything. *SOBS*

genting dream cruise

Since we didn’t go for the shore excursion, we spent most of our time chilling at the cafe and bars. Surprisingly, the prices of the drinks were quite affordable.

genting dream cruise

Disembarkment

genting dream cruise

On the third day of the cruise, we had to check out by 11: 30. Therefore, we only had time for breakfast and some photo taking around the cruise. We had to collect our passport from the reception at Deck 6. We also made our payment for the expenses onboard and the gratuity fees online via the QR code provided in the room. Payment could also be made at the reception where there was a long queue.

HAN-dy tip: Share your feedback and get to redeem a free digital photo!

genting dream cruise

After collecting our passports, we were ushered to the Zodiac theatre where we waited for our turn to disembark. We waited for about 45 mins before it was our turn to leave the Genting Dream Cruise. The only entertainment was a Nat Geo documentary and our phones. I guess it’s good to maintain order but some people got a bit restless from waiting.

genting dream cruise

Frankly speaking, although there were many activities on board, we spent most of our time eating our (five) meals and chilling at the bar. Probably as we didn’t want to spend any extra money pampering ourselves in the spa and salon. We wanted to go for the karaoke session but there was no option for 2 pax unless we spent SGD88 for a 2 hour session.

Also, the pool was always crowded with people and we felt too old to play on the water slides. For our dad, he tried to win back the casino but since we only had two nights in the open waters, there wasn’t enough time for him to do so. For adults without kids or more senior adults, there are limited options to do throughout the day, at least not many things to do for free.

However, we did have fun playing outdoors (briefly) and bonding indoors. We would most likely go on Genting Dream Cruise again but ideally, for a longer stay so that we can join the shore excursions. A two-night cruise is a bit short and yet a bit long to spend the whole day onboard.

minimum bet on table games

Just curious about minimum bets on other carnival ships. My last several cruises were on the Dream which had $10 minimum bet, and was told by casino staff that the Dream was the only ship at $10 minimum, with all others at $5.

Just want to know how much money to bring on our Vista cruise later this month.

Magic was $10 minimums in April.  I think this is standard across the fleet.

Everything is at $10. The only way you could get away with $5 is "Let It Ride" & drag all but $5 back.

Thanks,  $10 craps can get pricey really quick if someone can't throw the dice consistently good.

Craps, Roulette, BJ - $10

$100...7 out.

Haha

Yeah that seems to always be how craps worked out for me when I played so I never even look at that table's direction anymore.

$5 craps and the table is awesome. $10 craps and it is empty. it's a shame because a fun craps table can improve the casino atmosphere.

I sure hate to hear this. Sailing on Sunshine twice more this year. $5 tables sure are more enjoyable than $10 tables.

I agree. I use to make more on the $1 side bet than playing blackjack. $5 per hand and $1 on the side. Now it is a minimum of $10 on the hand and minimum of $5 on the side if being played.

Yeah, I really disliked it also.  We cruise on her a lot since we live in SC.  Also, they have replaced the chairs at the tables with huge ones that really only fit about 5 people to fit comfortably instead of 7, had to wait around much more on our last cruise 😢 but did win the "hot seat" last time! 😄

5:6 BJ sucks anyway.

What to expect on a Dream cruise

By: Author Megan Singleton

Posted on Last updated: June 14, 2022

Updated 2022: sadly Dream Cruises no longer operates, but you might get some ideas for what to expect on an Asian cruise in this post anyway!

Dream Cruises were one of the first cruise lines to start cruise itineraries again post pandemic and had a raft of measures in place to ensure guests are kept safe.

___________________

I spent six fabulous and fun days (and nights) onboard the Dream cruise ship sailing in the millpond calm sea from Singapore to Malaysia, Cambodia and Thailand at the invitation of Genting Cruise Lines, and I loved every moment!

So here’s a quick round up of what to expect from a Dream Cruise out of Singapore: the cabins, the food, the activities and shore excursions, plus some new plans for down under cruising in Australia and New Zealand.

dream cruise casino minimum bet

I arrived in Singapore a couple of days earlier and stayed on Sentosa Island (which was amazing and a blog post is coming on that), so taxied to the marina for our 2pm check in right in the heart of Singapore. It’s super easy to get to from anywhere and any taxi ride, whether it’s from the airport or a hotel, will be under $20. Maybe not even $10!

All cruises out of Singapore have a new rule that nail scissors (or any scissors actually) and my hair straighteners had to be removed from my luggage before I could check in. I was still able to take them onboard, just in my carryon. Don’t ask me!

Here’s a tip: you can take your luggage onboard with you if you don’t want to wait potentially a couple of hours for it to arrive at your cabin door. I only learned of this AFTER I had checked in, but I still had my bag within two hours, so it was fine.

Dining on board Genting Dream

There are 35 food and beverage outlets ranging from 24/7 snack bars to specialty restaurants, cafes, bars and buffet dining. Some are included in your fare and others are not. Like the cafe where if you are desperate for a flat white coffee, you can get one for about $8! Or Mark Best’s Steakhouse.

Speaking of Mark Best, he’s an Aussie award-winning chef who was a contestant on Netflix’s Final Table series (made at a cost of $2 million per episode!) He was onboard with our little media group from Australia and NZ and took us on a market shopping day in Bangkok and then used the ingredients to cook lunch for us the next day.

This “Market to Table” excursion with him is a new feature being launched on some Dream Cruise itineraries and will only be available for a maximum of 12 people.

Megan Singleton and chef Mark Best

Entertainment on board the Dream

The Genting Dream would be a very good ship for a multi-generational family holiday. It has something for everyone (although babies under six months are not allowed. Who would?!)

The kids (young and old) will probably be hanging out at the Waterslide Park, or maybe trying their skills on the Rock Climbing Wall, playing mini golf, or Glow Bowling on an indoor bowling alley, at the cinema or strapping on a harness and do the Ropes Course. And that’s before you just hang out at the pool.

dream cruise casino minimum bet

The casino is an important feature of this Asia-based cruise line and you’ll be able to have a flutter on the pokies or the tables any time (except when in port). The main casino is on level 8 around the atrium, but you’ll also find machines on several floors. Be aware that smoking is allowed indoors in one area of the casino, but that means the smell is not contained. Of course!

Each evening there is a stage show and I was really impressed with it. All singing all dancing, costumes, stage set, live orchestra, lighting. Well worth going to after dinner.

Extras you’ll want to book

Prime Steakhouse and Seafood Grill by Mark Best Chef Best is has earned several hats in Australia for his restaurants and now has opened a seafood and steak restaurant on board Genting Dream. He is also opening an outdoor (although it will be under cover) Seafood Grill on Explorer Dream, which is due to visit Australia and New Zealand waters during our down under summer.

Umi Uma Japanese restaurant We had the most delicious dinner here, all 12 of us squeezed around the table with the chef’s hot plate in the middle watching his every nimble move as he broke eggs, chopped, diced, flipped and flung the various courses onto our plates with expert precision. Well worth booking in for.

Umi Uma Japanese restaurant on Dream cruise

Market to Table excursion This unique opportunity sees you head off to a market on one of the port days with Chef Best or, if he’s not on board, one of the chefs from his restaurant. You’ll buy fresh local ingredients and bring them back on board where they will show you how to make a couple of dishes, and the best part is you’ll get to eat it for lunch. Max 12 people on this excursion so best to book it when you book your cruise to avoid missing out.

Penfolds Food & Wine Pairing Experience This wine experience in the designated Penfolds wine cellar on deck 8 is wonderful. Sommelier Erdal took us through three Penfold wines (including one bottle that was worth $289).

Each glass (and it was a lot more generous than a “taste”! was paired with a morsel of food, but it was the decanters Erdal used that stole the show.

Riedel’s horse head decanter, valued at around $1,200, was the most amazing piece of functional glass I’ve ever seen! (Not in the pic below sadly) but I did grab this link for you to buy one for about half that price, if you are looking for a crystal horse head decanter to wow your friends and family!

dream cruise casino minimum bet

You can do this with a minimum of five people and a max of 12. Cost A$25 per person (to try the Grange!) is astonishing value.

Spa treatments There are two spa facilities on board. An Asian spa and a Western one. The Asian spa I hit up three times – well they were selling a buy-two-get-one-free package, so I did! They have a small massage area and an enormous room with over 100 comfy recliner chairs all set up for foot massages and it was the perfect end to my day.

There is also a Vitality Pool, sauna and steam room which are free to use when you come for your treatments. In fact they say to come a full hour earlier if you want to, to take advantage of them.

The Crystal Life Spa is the Western style spa with massages and medical beauty treatments including Botox and the works. I didn’t avail myself of these, but there is the Crystal Life Cafe where we came one morning for freshly made juices and wraps (for a charge).

Asian spa onboard Genting Dream

Book yourself into the Palace!

The Palace is like a boutique ship within this large ship. Ideal for people who like all the dining and entertainment options a big ship offers but don’t want to hang out with the masses!

You get your own butler 24/7.

The average size of the suites at 42 sqm. The two villas have two bedrooms each, plus lounges (yes plural), a spa pool and even a grand piano in the bow of the ship with forward vista views.

Palace guests have their own pool away from the plebs and restaurant, although can also use the other pools and dining outlets throughout the ship. And the best part? Theirs is all-inclusive. If you choose to dine at the speciality restaurants in the main part of the ship (that every one else pays a surcharge for) you’ll have your own menu to choose from.

You also get a beverage package (valued at A$600 for the rest of us) that entitles you to drinks at all the bars on board. You’ll go on private shore excursions, enjoy curated talks and have your own themed dinner nights – including the Palace Barbecue that we were lucky enough to get invited to – yes lobster!

Oh and priority boarding and departing away from the plebs!

Top 5 Things You Must Keep In Mind While Gambling On Cruise Ships

by tbales | Oct 26, 2017 | resources | 0 comments

dream cruise casino minimum bet

Loud alarms, people chattering and flashing bright lights – all these make the perfect recipe for drawing people like bugs to the light! All these are strategic components used by casinos to attract people to their offerings. Although you can never guarantee sure-shot wins in gambling, there are some tips you can always benefit from while gambling at the cruise ship casinos.

If you have decided to book onto a last minute cruise , it would be good to hone your gambling skills at some trustworthy online casino first, for instance, Casino Cruise. Learn more about it here in this detailed Casino Cruise review . On to the tips now.

Avoid playing slot machines

Cruise lines are not in the business of handing out free money to their customers. Rather they are in it to make profit. Although slot machines in these cruise ship casinos seem a lot of fun, they offer the lowest chance of winning compared to the table games. However, don’t refrain from indulging in these slots if you feel luck is really on your side! But then don’t hesitate from walking away while you’re sufficiently ahead/behind.

Pay heed to the location of the slot machine

If at all you play these slot games, please note, their location matters a lot. You’d hardly hear slot machines in the rear corners going off frequently. It’s the machines that are situated in the middle area of a casino, on the ends, that get hit the most or make maximum noise (as everyone tends to walk by them). Casinos are always trying to draw more and more number of people in and what better way than making their most visible slot machines showcase some nice hits.

dream cruise casino minimum bet

Avoid getting drunk

You wouldn’t want to wake up bankrupt with plenty of regrets the next morning. Although drinking and gambling both deliver a lot of fun, you should be constantly on guard regarding your drinks. Drinking often makes people carefree and it isn’t uncommon for them to lose track of the amount they’ve bet. It’s not without any reason that big casino establishments offer free drinks to their patrons.

Start with minimum bets

If you’re keen on making some good money playing at these casinos, but don’t have wads of notes to play with, it would be in your best interest to start with minimum bets, just to test your luck. Please note, you might still hit those jackpots playing minimum bets. If not, you’d at least get to play more and have an extended period of enjoyment.

Know when to walk away

Every gambler is hounded by that feeling of ‘what if’ whenever he/she gets up from a slot machine or a gambling table. What if the next spin hits the jackpot for me? What if the next game recovers all my losses? We are always chasing more and more money. Well, you might be in for a chance to hit big, but there’s also a higher chance of knocking yourself further into negative. You must accept your losses and get up when you have already lost/won enough.
